ounded by CEO Brett Boulton, Bold Living is a name synonymous with style and satisfaction. The team of over 85 from administrators to construction supervisors, estimators, draftspeople, and interior designers have been helping local Queenslanders for over a decade to build their dream home. Their secret? Flexibility and understanding. “It’s what makes us different to our competitors. We have been able to train many long-standing team members right from the beginning of their careers, as well as appoint very experienced professionals who have been in the industry for 20 plus years to ensure that we have the experience and knowledge to be flexible in our offerings,” says Brett. When it comes to the home design phase, Brett, his wife Arlia, and his award-winning team (prized with the HIA Professional Medium Builder award three years in a row from 2015 to 2017 and then the HIA National Professional Medium Builder Award in 2018) know that there is no one-size-fits-all approach. With each client being so unique in their vision, this is where the bold difference makes building beautiful homes a breeze. “We are flexible across all areas of our process from the actual home design phase, interior design, and customer service,” says COO of Bold Living, Arlia Boulton. Building right across South East Queensland, Bold Living has also branched out to Toowoomba in the most recent two and a half years offering solutions and options to first home buyers, growing families, corporate couples and families looking to upsize, people looking to downsize, clients looking to knock down and rebuild and of course, clients who

Priding themselves on understanding that building a home is so much more than just bricks and mortar, Bold Living understand that having a unique and beautifully built place to call home is a dream for so many Queenslanders. “It’s very time-consuming and also overwhelming if you aren’t provided with the right advice or guidance. Our experienced and professional team understand what needs to happen to ensure that client’s homes are built correctly and efficiently. The benefit of this is that clients don’t need to be engaging numerous different companies and organise them all separately – we will organise everything so that the process is seamless and stress-free,” says Brett. It’s no secret that with this CEO at the helm of home building, bringing a vision to life is more than just a dream. Brett has made this a reality for countless Queenslanders and with property and construction accolades such as Brisbane Young Entrepreneur of the year for three years in a row (from 2017 to 2019) as well as Australian Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2019 by Business News, only make this team stronger within the industry. “Your home is such a big part of your life, so we are an important partner in making what people want actually happen. It’s an amazing feeling, knowing that you have contributed to someone’s life and happiness,” says Brett.

rowing up in the Sunshine State, Courtney Monsma recently caught our attention with her hilariously heart-warming performance as Anna in Disney’s Frozen The Musical at QPAC. A proclivity for music was inherent to Courtney as a child and while watching her older sister in a high school production of Annie, a cord was struck. It was from this moment, that treading the boards not only became her afterschool passion, but a determined career path. Before her starring role as Anna, Courtney earned a Bachelor of Musical Theatre from the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, right here in our River City. She then went on to star as Katherine Howard in
SIX The Musical at Sydney Opera House. Prior to this, she performed in the Australasian tour of Disney’s Aladdin while understudying the role of Princess Jasmine and in the Australian tour of MAMMA MIA! as well as understudying the role of Sophie. As possibly one of the most loveable characters – adored by children and adults alike – the local theatre princess takes pride in relating to Anna. “It is an honour to play such a well-loved character. Anna inspires me in many ways, especially when it comes to her undying positivity and courage.” When it comes to working in Brisbane, Courtney jokes that there is nothing not to love! “For me it’s the perfect combination of JUNE 2022
life and work. There’s so much variety from the city to exploring nature. I also think Queensland audiences really appreciate theatre which is lovely to perform to,” she says. Courtney has also recently released her debut studio album, In The Light. A collection of theatre classics as well as her original track ‘The Light That You Are’, the album is a lifelong dream achieved for Courtney. “The last few years have been very difficult for everyone to navigate, including me as a performer. Writing the album has exposed me to the areas of myself that I don’t believe in and encouraged me to look inward and understand why,” she says.

PROFILE
Hi Biànca, thanks for chatting with us! Firstly, how would you describe your style? It has certainly changed over time. When I lived in Italy, it was a style synonymous with the streets of Milan – classic, minimal, and mostly black. However, after being in Australia for 10 years, it’s been influenced by environment – both the sub-tropical climate and the industry in which I work. In the summer, it’s about feeling comfortable and cool, but polished. I favour lines that are simple and clean, and most often in a neutral and lighter colour palette. I purchase items I know I will wear often and have been made well – the same goes for the items in our home.
three years due to the pandemic – those first hugs were everything! I packed items I could layer and mix together. MVPs were an oversized cashmere knit from Khaite and Totême high waisted black wool trousers – I wore these on repeat. My long-belted coat from P.Johnson kept the winter chill at bay. What does fashion mean to you? For me, it’s about feeling comfortable and making considered choices. If you’re certain about how you appear, that exudes a confidence no professional stylist can capture.

The ideas for each of our venues came from identifying opportunities and creating offerings we hoped our loved ones would enjoy. In terms of learning, that comes from each and every service, adapting where we need to. The learning never stops. Our restaurants are authentic and respect tradition, but they also look forward. Where does your love of food come from? From a love of the connection it yields – sitting down and sharing a meal with those you care about and who care about you has the power to reset and reframe an intense day, especially when life is moving at a fast pace. What is next in store for you? I can’t believe we are nearly halfway through the year! We have a few more trips planned, both here in Australia and to Europe to see my family again.

“I’m constantly collecting new ideas – usually from outside of the fashion industry. In my spare time, I’m known for my love of DIY and within this space is where I do my best thinking. The collection starts with a colour palette and a few stories of silhouettes that have been ruminating in my head. It really develops and comes to life when we source fabrications. Special craft elements usually come to life through a series of failed ideas – when we workshop these with other makers and collaborators – that’s where the magic happens.”

“THE WYNN HAMLYN BRAND IS INNOVATIVE, CRAFT-INSPIRED, AND ULTIMATELY FUN.”
“My personal style is also very routine and practical as my day can be quite physical and involved with pattern making, cutting fabric, and playing around with samples. I often find myself in a good pair of jeans and a t-shirt. When it’s colder I’ll throw on a knit or one of our fleece sweaters. Menswear has been a great development for us, it’s a collection of clothes I want to wear made up of things I wear every day, and things I’d like to aspirationally wear if I wasn’t so practical!” JUNE 2022

LOVE ON TOP
After three mid-pandemic attempts to make it down the aisle, Rachael and Simon finally sealed their love in a styled-toperfection ceremony with 74 of their closest loved ones. Where and when did you both meet? We met in 2015 at the Brisbane institution that is Friday’s Riverside! I was out with my roommate who was quickly dismissed from wingman duties after about 30 minutes of chatting to Simon. How did he propose? We were on holiday in the Bahamas, and he had arranged a private dinner on the beach. Grand gestures weren’t out of the ordinary, so even though I hoped it was happening, I was trying not to get too excited. He was clearly nervous because there was no kneeling or question, he simply slid the ring across the table and said, “I got you something.” Where were the ceremony and reception? Redleaf Wollombi in the Hunter Valley. Describe the location and why you chose it... We originally planned a destination wedding in New Zealand at a winery that had a European feel. When we gave up on international travel, I suppose the venue appealed most because it felt like a world away from Australia. The property is so beautifully designed with ivy-covered walls, a pale pink façade, and manicured gardens complete with a lavender field. Favourite moment? We shied away from a few wedding traditions, and they were my favourite moments. We woke up together and exchanged wedding day gifts over breakfast in bed, but the most special moment was seeing each other for the first time for our ‘first look’ photos pre- ceremony.

My beautiful bridesmaids planned a long lunch on The Calile Hotel rooftop with my 20 closest friends and it was perfect! They were briefed on absolutely no hen’s paraphernalia and compensated with a live musician, florals, and gorgeous table styling. I switched dresses about four times and ended up wearing a colourful mini dress by Turkish designer, Raisa Vanessa, before changing into the iconic Cult Gaia white feather dress for the evening’s antics.

THE SKIN LAB Let The Skin Lab’s experts get you glowing again. You don’t want to trust your face and body with just anyone, right? You want to know it’s in expert hands like The Skin Lab’s four doctors and a team of dermal therapists! And they don’t stop there, they even have a pharmacist on-site to make sure you get the best products for aftercare – a big passion for this beauty haven. Founder and CEO Dr Heather Jenkins compares The Skin Lab approach to repairing a well-loved couch. “First, you boost the underlying structure by replacing the stuffing so it’s plump and inviting again,” she says. “Next you repair the upholstery, erasing all those years of wear and tear, and finally you apply protectant to keep the elements at bay. Each step is important, and it takes all three to get that couch looking its best again.” So, when it comes to repairing your skin, The Skin Lab’s specialists support the underlying structure with fillers, threads, or a combination of both, depending on what suits you best. Next, their expert laser therapy thoroughly and safely rejuvenates your skin’s surface to keep it looking fresh. Finally, their skin therapists select the very best products to lock in the results and provide ultimate protection from our intense Queensland elements. Breaking it down further, this use of fillers and thread lifts provide a boost in volume, structure, and support that mimic a surgical facelift without the downtime or associated risks. Laser therapy treats the surface for fine lines, wrinkles, scarring (including acne scars), age spots, redness, spider veins, uneven pigmentation, and enlarged pores. And the right products protect your skin from further environmental damage. Our advice? Make sure you get the right guidance for your face. You can book in for a free 25-minute cosmetic or skincare assessment to discuss your concerns today, or book an initial consult with one of The Skin Lab’s medical experts, with the cost redeemable against your next treatment at theskinlab.com.au. What does your beauty diary look like? I enjoy an occasional facial and massage but perhaps more importantly for me is a regular spa pedicure and manicure – I love the organic nail treatment at Dr Nails. I also walk daily in fresh air and have a posture and deportment exercise routine which is from when I first went to June Dally Watkins as a teenager in the 1960s. Fun fact, I am still a consultant lecturer at JDW 55 years on!
Hi Dianne, thank you for chatting with us about all things beauty! Tell us, what does beauty mean to you? Beauty means a number of things to me. Firstly, I know that beauty is more than skin deep – it’s a balance of inner beauty and outer beauty which makes a person truly beautiful. One’s nature, personality, character, and interest in others shines through from inner beauty, to out.

Turn up your skincare IQ: dissecting skincare labels with Hannah English.
eed help finding your glow? We’re here for you, or should we say, Hannah English is here for you. Skincare labels can be overwhelming to decipher with their endless cosmetical lingo to wade through. We know it’s important, but how can we make sense of it? The time has come to be better equipped to assess if a product will do what it promises. Let’s start with the basics — the ingredients list! What can you tell from it? If it contains specific ingredients known to do what the product claims to do, it’s probably a keeper. Be sure to scan the active ingredients when investigating a product. For example, if a product claims to ‘brighten’ skin, you might expect to see vitamin C. What you can’t tell from the ingredients list is that it’s similar to cake. You can look at the ingredients all you like, but you won’t know how it tastes until you try it. The same goes for the effects of skincare products. It’s like one

big, dewy complexion cake! Now for the guidelines. Yes, that’s right, beauty buys have guidelines! They must all be named according to the INCI (say what!) and even follow an algorithm. Let’s break this down, INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) is an international standard that ensures ingredients are called the same thing worldwide. As for the algorithm, everything must be listed in order of quantity. If it’s first on the ingredient list, it is the most abundant ingredient. The top five ingredients make up the majority of the mixture, so you can sometimes get a feel for the product’s texture with only this information. Many ingredients are effective at very low concentrations, so more does not always mean better. Once you get down to 1% or less, ingredients can be listed in any order, so brands will sometimes list the most exciting ingredients first. Once you’re across this information, it’s about recognising which ingredients do what, and that takes time and practice. Let’s face it, soon you’ll have a PhD in skincare. This is an edited extract from Your Best Skin by Hannah English published by Hardie Grant Books out on 15 June 2022.

Laser focus
Oh my goddess – say om!
One laser is good but two (or more) may be better! Many skin concerns such as pigmentation, loss of volume, redness, fine lines, spider veins, uneven texture or acne scarring are tricky to treat with skincare products alone, but in-clinic treatments such as lasers can target them on exactly the right level below the skin’s surface. There are countless varieties of laser technologies, all with different wavelengths and varying power densities. Although many lasers can treat a variety of concerns, I find that stacking our lasers gives our patients the best results and delivers a beautiful luminous glow with fewer visits. For example, I use one kind of laser to target rosacea and broken capillaries that can be particularly bothersome around the nose and midface and follow up with a different kind specifically tailored to brighten and tighten your skin and gives effective results with less downtime. I don’t know about you, but I love indulgent spa and wellness experiences during my getaways. After recent events, it’s a must-do. Lifestyle-inspired travel is more than the destination and activities, it’s a respite from the everyday. From baths in ancient Rome and pilgrimages to the Dead Sea, travellers have long sought health remedies, serenity, and tranquillity. There’s something so primal about sand between your toes at a barefoot hideaway in the Maldives or decompressing under a rustling rainforest canopy enjoying an Indigenousinspired spa treatment using Australian native botanicals. My favourite is a mindful photography retreat in the Tuscany hills strolling through the vineyards, indulging in vino and regional farm-table cooking classes. Time to book a holiday? Leading into an auction of such stature, we highly advise you to attend a viewing first with our team. This is your opportunity to become familiar with this spectacular collection (I do love the ability to share the history of each piece privately!) and identify any pieces you’d like to make your own. As always, we are flexible when it comes to treasured pieces, so you are welcome to call to arrange a private viewing if auction dates clash. And, of course, since we are always consigning pieces, you are always welcome to call for a confidential conversation.

Killer of joy
Regrets, I’ve had a few
These words are not just for the business owners and professionals I coach. Everyone needs to be aware of this: comparison is the killer of joy. We are all guilty of this and the only person we hurt is ourselves. We compare our success in our life journey to others, which inevitably makes us feel less worthy. Picture this: you finally have your dream car, and you just had a hugely successful year financially, then someone in your circle betters you – goodbye joy! It doesn’t matter who you are or what you have, there will always be someone else with more than you. Change your inner programming around this and instead of that heavy feeling in your belly when you compare, show true happiness and joy towards the other person’s success. This reduces your tendency to compare, makes them feel appreciated, and permits you to continue to feel victorious with your own wins.
Regret, often associated with guilt and shame, is a feeling experienced when we believe our past actions if changed, may have achieved better outcomes. It is a common, healthy emotion, and exploring your regrets can be empowering for your future. Reviewing regrets with the intention of sharpening a life focus can lead to practical plans for reimagining a richer, more meaningful, engaged life. Regrets take various forms about choices we’ve made; that have led to a less-stable base; not having taken a chance in life, becoming disconnected from friends, or unethical choices. The transforming power of regret, a most misunderstood, yet potentially most valuable emotion, can be realised when we express what we lament, are self-compassionate, and commit to smarter decisions. Looking backward can help move us forward!

Looking pretty!
Know your colours
Have you been considering treatment for your spider veins? We’re here to tell you everything you need to know before you start. If you have any symptoms like pain or a family history of varicose veins, have an ultrasound examination to ensure there are no underlying larger veins that are insufficient. Failure to treat these correctly from the outset can lead to “matting”, a complication of new, very fine veins forming. Compression stockings should always be worn for at least seven days and nights post-treatment. Also, it is important to bear in mind that the cosmetic treatment of spider veins is never completely permanent. Over time, new veins might develop and so you may need a maintenance session in a few years to keep those legs looking tip-top.
It is a common misconception that the fit is the most important element of one’s suit. Whereas in fact, it comes down to colour! You can be wearing the most perfect fitting suit, but in the wrong colour, it can make you look all shades of gauche. Pairing a good fitting suit in the right colours for your complexion lifts your energy and creates the best-looking version of you. It is best to get your colour analysis done professionally with a team like Wil Valor behind you, but if you can’t wait, start with this: take a piece of pure white paper and hold it up to your face. If your skin happens to have a hue that leans towards a greenish, light brown or yellow undertones, then you are considered warm. If pink, rosy or blue, you are considered, cool. If more grey tones, you are neutral. Make your undertones shine!

Home beautiful
Great taste
There’s no doubt that your home’s façade establishes its presence in the street. Powerful, beautiful, traditional, modern, or understated, there are so many ways to describe a home’s appeal. Enhancing your façade and appeal is personal, it reflects what you want to see every day but also what you want to showcase to everyone else. For sellers, improving your street appeal can pay dividends, so stand back and look for opportunities. Take stock of surrounding homes so you can differentiate if need be and chat to your local agent for suggestions. Typically, these include painting, landscaping, and lighting as a starting point. Great street appeal sets the tone with buyers, it shows effort and affirms you are serious and won’t compromise on your sale price.

STAGING HER RETURN Courtney Stewart saw her first-ever play at La Boite Theatre. Years later she dreamed of becoming its artistic director. Now? She’s come full circle! We got the low-down on the new direction for this confessed dramaturge. Hi Courtney! Congratulations on being named the new artistic director for La Boite. How do you feel? I’m thrilled to be moving back home to take up this position. It was here that I saw my first play back in high school. When I was performing in Single Asian Female at the Roundhouse years later, I remember saying as I was waiting between scenes that I would love to run this company one day. What’s the most rewarding part of your job? I have worked predominantly on new Australian work, and the most rewarding part of ushering new stories to the stage is working so closely with a team of collaborators on something that hasn’t existed before.
First thing you’ll do in your new role? To meet every artist living and working in Meanjin! I’ve been away for eight years and the industry in Brisbane has evolved and changed a lot in that time. Biggest learnings in your career thus far? That situations or opportunities that seem the most difficult are often the ones in which you learn and stretch the most. I’ve learned to lean into these moments. I expect it to be bumpy and am comfortable with being uncomfortable. I actually hate big scary rides at amusement parks but tend to seek out and dive into situations or opportunities in my career that I find terrifying. T
here’s a new kid on the block – and by block, we mean the Style Magazine office! Meet the latest recruit to our team of creative powerhouses, Sharleen Christie. An Australian-Filipino photographer, who kick-started her impressive career by studying at Griffith University where she majored in creative advertising before finding her niche in photography. In her first year of study, her lecturer told the class that only a handful of them would still be working in the industry in five years’ time — this was a huge driving force for Sharleen and seven years later, she’s found herself a valued member of the Style team. During her studies Sharleen would often attend local runway shows and soon fell in love with the glitz and glamour of the fashion industry. In just her second year of university she travelled to the bright lights of New York City – with no formal invitation in hand – all with the hope of shooting the impressive street style of New York Fashion Week. With no contacts, and no real plan, she networked her way into an all-access pass. Since then, she has gone on to work for an array of runways and fashion brands including Afterpay Australian Fashion Week, Brisbane Fashion Festival, Women in Fashion Brisbane, and even Dior. Now, her incredible shots grace the covers and glossy pages of the very magazine you’re reading now. Most recently she journeyed to the beach to capture a suite of incredible images for our brand new magazine, Noosa Style. Pictured here, you can see
the beauty and elegance which portrayed the client, Secrets Shhh, in all its glory. Nailed the brief? You betcha! It’s no secret her artistic style is what really sets her apart from the rest — from lyrical aesthetics and dramatic lighting to versatile monochromes and bold framing, her eye for detail is impeccable. We are so thrilled to welcome Sharleen into the Style family! Did you know that our creative agency, Style Media, offers everything from fullscale photoshoot production and talent management to fashion styling and Reels? No job is too big or small, so be sure to get in touch for a chat. INFO@STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU @SHARLEEN_CHRISTIE

A life’s work Featuring never-before-seen items from intimate family archives and some of the world’s rarest gems, the latest exhibition from Margot McKinney, World of Wonder, is so spectacular it will take your breath away. Hi Margot! We’re so thrilled to chat with you about your upcoming exhibition at MoB. How are you feeling about it? I am very excited about the upcoming World of Wonder Exhibition. The Museum of Brisbane and our team have been working on the finer details for almost two years and now we are only weeks away which is so surreal. I cannot wait to reveal it to the Brisbane community. Take us back to where your love for jewellery, design, and colour stems from: My love of jewellery and design is in my DNA. My great grandfather started our family business back in 1884 and was documented even then as visiting Broome to acquire natural pearls. As a family, we’ve taken great pride in travelling the world to source the finest of everything we carry in our stores. In particular, we take great pride in our important relationships with our precious gem cutters and pearl farmers. The chance to design one-of-a-kind jewellery pieces from extraordinary gems is a great love of mine and brings me a great sense of joy and pride. Describe the Margot McKinney woman? That is easy! The women who love my jewellery are all fabulously chic and completely confident of their own individual style. They know straight up what they are attracted to and what makes their heart sing.
You incorporate the Australian landscape into many of your designs, why is this important to you? We are extraordinarily fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful places in the world. From the city of Brisbane to the incredible beaches and out to the Scenic Rim, I am constantly inspired by our Queensland surroundings. Blue and green and exotic ochre colours are all around us – it’s this natural beauty that inspires me when I work with gems, almost by osmosis.
Do you have a favourite collection? I can’t really say that I have a favourite. There is something wondrous about all the amazing gems with which I have the privilege of working. Sometimes when I travel to the USA and see a particular jewel I may not have seen for some time, I fall in love with it all over again and marvel at the wonder of Mother Nature and its beauty.
Describe the feeling of a client falling in love with a piece you have created? Pure joy! When I create a piece of jewellery and then have the rare privilege of sharing the story of its creation with a collector as they acquire the piece, that is the fulfilment of my career. It’s the very reason I adore what I do every single day. JUNE 2022
