15TH ANNIVERSARY ISSUE

FROM THE

EDITOR I LOVE CLOTHES. And shoes. And accessories. And makeup. That might seem a little obvious coming from the editor of a magazine like Style but it explains so much of what goes on in our office from day to day. They say if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life; those words ring true here, especially as we celebrate the 15th anniversary of Style Magazines this month. I feel so privileged to be here for this milestone year. Thank you, Paul and Tracy, for creating something that all of Brisbane can fall in love with each month. I can’t believe how far this company has come in such a short time and I look forward to our bright future. Cheers to you guys from all of us here at Style. Bending the rules to get the job you want hasn’t always been an option; now, Generation Y is taking centre stage and shaking things up (page 14). How wonderful it is to live in an age where the drive of contemporary society is a complete wildcard. “Mirror, Mirror, on the wall, who in this land is the fairest of all?” QPAC has taken our cover and fashion pages to the stage and brought a tale as old as time into a modern fashion fairytale, filled with envy, vanity and passion. Elsewhere in the issue, it is time to indulge in Brisbane’s foodie empires, travel the world and plan a soiree no one will ever forget. Stay curious, determined and hard-working.

SEE THROUGH ME

HUDSON BY GREG NATALE X THE VIGNETTE ROOM

Local label White Label Noba was born out of Tracey Watkins’ desire to design for style, joy and love. With a boutique in the leafy Brisbane suburb of Hawthorne, White Label Noba has grown significantly since opening in 2011 and is known for Tracey’s timeless designs, which resist bending to the transience of fashion. Paired together, this gorgeous sateen top and tulle skirt are super feminine, but can be toughened up with a biker jacket or pair of boots.

To celebrate the launch of Greg Natale’s Hudson collection, The Vignette Room has opened an in-store pop‑up. The collection is a nod to the flourish, glamour and refinement that New York experienced post-World War II. Sumptuous upholstery, robust marble, meticulous attention to woodcraft, the option of black or white satin finishes to Euro beech and the occasional graceful brass detail make this collection ultra luxe.

THE X, Y,

Z EITGEIST

Jaharn Giles

How Generation Y is turning the nine-to-five workday on its head, writes Caitlyn Spanner. JAHARN GILES WAS working in fashion PR in 2013 when she started her travel and lifestyle blog, Mister Weekender. After three months of incredible success, Jaharn felt confident enough to quit her nine-to-five job and focus solely on the blog. She is just one of the many faces of Generation Y going against societal norms to create a work life that works for them.

14

Born between 1982 and 2000, Gen Ys grew up alongside technology. Practically born with a phone in their hand, this was the first generation introduced to Facebook and they quickly adopted social media as a means of communicating and observing the world. Often labelled entitled and selfish by their predecessors (Gen X and the Baby Boomers), Gen

Ys are frequently criticised for their unconventional approach to the working world. While many in this demographic believe that flexible working hours are key to boosting productivity, that doesn’t mean they shirk their responsibility. In fact, studies show many Gen Ys regularly check their work emails outside normal working hours. Studies also found that a vast majority of the

Jaharn’s home office

generation wants a job that will make an impact. According to census data, Gen Ys are studying more than their senior counterparts. They are also nearly twice as likely to study entrepreneurship at university – a sure-fire sign that they will want more from their career further down the track. On top of that, many Gen Ys entered the workforce during the recession, when a crippled economy meant fewer jobs. Since then, they’ve had to adapt the only way they know how and many have taken advantage of technology that older generations didn’t have. Gone are the days where climbing the corporate ladder was paramount; with 60 per cent of Gen Ys leaving companies after only three years, it’s obvious they want more from their career and are reluctant to put all their eggs in one basket. With these statistics and the belief instilled from a young age that they could “be anything they wanted to be”, it’s no wonder Gen Y is rebelling against the daily grind in order to create something for themselves. Today, it’s not unusual for young professionals to ditch the regular nine-to-five. Thanks to social media, mobile work, crowdsourcing and freelancing, it is now easier and cheaper than it has ever been to create your brand or business through platforms such as blogging. While Jaharn risked everything to focus solely on running Mister Weekender, she says that she has never been happier. “I can safely say I will never work the nine-to-five daily grind ever again,” she says. Along with travel tips for the wanderers of the world, Mister Weekender now offers blogging, time

stylemagazines.com.au

management and Instagram advice for those looking to follow in Jaharn’s footsteps. Jaharn has also found social media communities to be very supportive and she says it’s easy to create a network with likeminded people. Jock Fairweather is another young entrepreneur rebelling against the normal workday. From growing up in Papua New Guinea and Manila to finding himself on super yachts in Saint-Tropez, Jock has seen the world from both sides. His upbringing has left him with a passion for giving back and helping others find their own success. He opened Little Tokyo Two as a collaborative space where he and his friends could work; it quickly gained momentum and soon enough he was able to turn it into a thriving business. Jock’s overall goal is to open branches of Little Tokyo Two in developing nations “to create closed and safe workspaces that will provide invaluable resources to learn... and work”. Like Jaharn, Jock says he will never go back to a nine-to-five job. “I love what I do and I will spend every waking moment ensuring that I can continue to do it. I love to help people. I couldn’t do that in a nine-to-five job,” he says. Having successfully intertwined work, play, exercise and rest with people who have similar visions, Jock is a prime example of Gen Y’s flexible approach to work and dedication to something they are passionate about. Jock believes today’s world is vastly different to the one his parents grew up in, with increased “accessibility to educational resources, supportive entrepreneurial communities and rapid increase in technology” the most marked improvements. “There has been a huge increase in entrepreneurship among young people. To ensure that it’s sustainable, the key is to maintain that support and progressively increase it,” he says. A recent graduate from Business Management and HR at the University of Queensland, Joel Luther is a Gen Y who believes that, regardless of the hours you work, it’s the passion you have for the job that matters. Working for Brisbane start-up Adepto, Joel believes that freedom, meaningful

Jock Fairweather

work and the chance to be creative is what attracts him and other Gen Ys to start-ups. “There are a lot of similarities between the way Gen Ys work and the way that innovative, growing and successful companies are known to work,” Joel says. He adds that, if he had freedom and the ability to work towards a meaningful goal, he wouldn’t mind working in the corporate world. With Gen Y projected to be the largest generation in the working world, companies will have to continue to come up with innovative and flexible working conditions to appeal to the bright young minds of this generation before they go off and start working for themselves. And with Generation Z now reaching the workforce, keeping up with the needs of the younger generations is going to become even more important than ever before.

LOVE TO COLLABORATE WITH VIVIENNE WESTWOOD

THE DRAWING BOARD

ULTIMATE STYLE ICON LAURA BAILEY. HER STYLE IS PERFECTION TO ME! ARTIST YOU ARE PLAYING FRANK SINATRA

World-celebrated artist Megan Hess chats to Leith Wilson about all things family and illustrating. MEGAN HESS ALWAYS knew she wanted to draw. Growing up, she had no idea that fashion illustrator was an actual job; she just knew that she felt most at home with a pen in hand. Finding work as a graphic designer, it wasn’t until Megan packed up her life and moved to London that she realised her burning desire to be an artist. Art Director for Liberty Department Store at the time, Megan began doing small illustrations, and commissions soon followed. “I wasn’t earning a fortune but I’d never been happier. I knew I was going to do this forever,” she says. One phone call saw Megan get her big break in 2006 and her career skyrocketed. “I got a call in the middle of the night from Candace Bushnell’s publisher asking if I would

illustrate her novel One Fifth Avenue.” She was then commissioned for the Sex and The City book cover and contacted to do portraits for Tiffany & Co, Chanel, Dior and many more. “At the same time my work finally took off, I had my first baby!” Megan says. “I always tell people I haven’t really slept since 2006.” Megan says she maintains a healthy work and family life with the love and support of her husband. “We made a pact not to give up on the things we loved because we were having kids, and we really stuck to it,” she says. When asked what she loves most about illustrating, Megan doesn’t hesitate: “I get to create an imaginary world and there are no limits to what you can draw.” READ MORE ONLINE

ALL IN THE DETAIL Whether you rely on it to get you through the working week or a special occasion, a well-tailored suit is a wardrobe staple for any man. FROM THE V of the lapels to the drape of the fabric, the attention to detail in a tailored suit can transform your look and make you stand out in the most classic and understated way. We asked some of Brisbane’s best tailors for their top tips on getting that perfect fit. THE SERVICE The tailors at The Afternoon believe that comfort is the key to a perfect suit. With a “less is more” approach, The Afternoon tailors create a unique pattern that is an extension of your existing wardrobe and lifestyle. They then fit the garment according to each individual’s requirements and needs. While this method may take a few fittings, it’s a necessary process to obtain the ideal fit.

THE LOOK There are many style elements that come into play depending on your needs. For a casual suit, The Afternoon tailors suggest an unlined or quarter-lined jacket for a more relaxed look. When combined with a larger waistband, hip cinches are another element that can allow a comfortable fit and tailored look for your trousers. The Afternoon’s premium tailoring for suit fittings includes everything from horsehair canvassing and hand-stitched lapels and shoulders right down to natural buttons.

THE DIFFERENCE When it comes to choosing a suit, having a customised fit will not only ensure comfort, it will also provide a level of quality that cannot always be guaranteed with brand name suits purchased off the rack. Tailors work with their clients to ensure you are paying for exactly what you want, all the way from the first fit to the very last detail. PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY MAYBELLINE NEW YORK

THE NEW SUPER

Gigi Hadid is just 21 years old and she’s taking the world by storm. The international model and global phenomenon talks all things fashion and beauty with Sarah McAlpine. FROM NOT-SO-HUMBLE BEGINNINGS, Gigi Hadid has dominated the fashion scene, starring in campaigns for Versace, walking the runway for Chanel and earning her wings in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Adding to her list of achievements, she’s also been named a spokesperson for Maybelline New York. Born Jelena Noura Hadid, Gigi is the daughter of real estate mogul Mohamed Hadid and former model/The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Yolanda Hadid. Gigi developed an infatuation with the industry early on, starring in a campaign for Baby Guess when she was just two years old. “Since I was young, I have been very intrigued with fashion and cosmetics print advertising and TV commercials,” says Gigi. “I would always sit in my room and try and re-enact the ones I loved.” Now, the 21-year-old works with a range of brands and describes her style as a casual mix of high- and low-end labels that represent her California upbringing and current New York lifestyle. 26

I know that when I’m feeling down and I put makeup on, it automatically makes me feel beautiful and therefore changes my mood. “My favourite designers range from Australian labels such as Finders Keepers, The Fifth Label and Cameo to Diesel, Pucci, Chanel, Prada, and Saint Laurent. It depends on whether I’m going to walk down the street or down a red carpet.”

Joining the Maybelline New York brand is a dream come true for the star, who has been a fan of the products since high school. “I think that makeup has the power to really change someone’s confidence,” Gigi says. “It is true that beauty comes from within, but I know that when I’m feeling down and I put makeup on, it automatically makes me feel beautiful and therefore changes my mood.” Not just a pretty face, Gigi is also studying Criminal Psychology at Eugene Lang College: The New School for Liberal Arts. When she’s not working or studying, Gigi is spending time with friends, reading, listening to music (including her favourite, John Mayer) and working up a sweat at celebrity-fave boxing gym, Gotham Gym. On remaining confident in an unforgiving industry, Gigi simply states, “I get more confident as I reach more of my goals because I know how hard my team and I work, and it’s really fulfilling to be rewarded through opportunities.” JULY16

MODERN LIFE IS very different to that which our parents lived. Today, there are endless opportunities to combine your job, passion and hobbies into a tapestry of activities which define who you are and what you do. Maria Rampa has adopted this approach. Having taken a redundancy from her busy corporate job, Maria decided to create a portfolio life and career. After more than 25 years’ working in journalism, marketing, the not-for-profit sector, client relationship management and senior executive roles in Australia and overseas, Maria had gained a plethora of skills and experiences. “I wanted to bring all of these elements together,” Maria says. “Having experienced the uncertainty and insecurity of job loss and other unexpected events throughout my life, I also wanted the freedom of working for myself, to create a life of self-determination and multiple income streams.” Overall, Maria says she is driven by a desire to help people and companies connect more meaningfully with themselves and others and empower them, particularly women, to succeed. And so Evvoke was born. Today, Maria’s company consists of Evvoke Consulting, which provides marketing, communications, client insights and engagement services for

LUXE LINEN Having developed a luxury clothing line from an age-old handcraft, Brisbane fashion entrepreneur Geo Moriarty knows the secret to creating beautiful, wearable items that will become investment pieces for every woman’s wardrobe. Have you always wanted to be a fashion designer? I’ve been on a journey since day one to uncover where I fit within fashion. I started with modelling; I was a shy kid so it wasn’t much fun for me but it did open my eyes to the creative magic that can happen behind the scenes. I went on to dabble in editorial styling and graduated from QUT with a fashion degree. Working in-house for a luxury fashion boutique chain opened my eyes to the joys of small business and fashion buying and I wanted in! What inspired you to create your label Geo Moriarty? Launching my own label was something I always saw as the pinnacle of creative indulgence. I admired those who dared, but didn’t see it in my future. It wasn’t until I reached a crossroads in my non-linear and totally zig-zagging career path (and thanks to a few of life’s twists and turns) that I took the plunge.

What makes your Geo Moriarty pieces so special? They have soul! Each button is stitched by hand, as is every tassel. Each garment is made from Italian linen and has a certain weight to it; I love that you can feel the quality. I believe that the Ukrainian artisanal embroidery that is stitched into every garment is luxury in its truest sense. Why do you think your pieces are so popular? Whether it comes from the playfulness of a puffed sleeve or splashes of unabashed colour, I think a lot of women see my pieces as a breath of fresh air amongst the generic and minimalistic masses. What is next for Geo Moriarty? I’m excited to launch a beautiful new collection this month. I’ll be heading off overseas soon, with said collection in my suitcase. I intend to explore the road less travelled... and I’ll be sharing all the best bits of my adventures on Instagram, of course.

I believe that the Ukrainian artisanal embroidery is luxury in its truest sense.

HEY, BIG SPENDER Trying (and failing) to save money? These simple tricks are the key to success, writes Sarah Taviani. YOU PROMISE YOURSELF that things will be different this pay day. Oh, who are we kidding? Your money will be gone by next Saturday unless you do something to change your spending habits. It’s not as hard as you might think. Here’s how to go about it: DO THE MATH Work out how much money you want to save this year and divide it by 52. That’s the amount you need to save each week. If meeting that goal means you can’t pay your bills, adjust until you have a more reasonable savings target. PAY YOURSELF FIRST After you’ve paid your bills and figured out how much you need for food, make a savings deposit. Then go wild with whatever’s left over. FIND A HIGH INTEREST SAVINGS ACCOUNT In addition to, well, giving you high interest rates on your savings, these accounts usually don’t let you access your funds immediately. It might sound scary but it will prevent you from sneakily dipping into your savings for that cute new outfit.

PAY OFF YOUR DEBTS NOW Unfortunately, bills don’t disappear just because you ignore them. You’re probably paying a ridiculous interest rate on your overdue credit card bills, so start making small contributions to cut that debt down before it gets way out of control.

PLAN AHEAD Let’s say you pay $10 for lunch five days a week and you’re working 48 weeks a year. That’s $2400. That’s two overseas flights. (Economy class – don’t get greedy.) Make extra servings for dinner and get stuck into those leftovers at lunch so you can have a rad holiday, OK?

MAKE SOME MONEY Old clothes, furniture, books, DVDs – you probably have stuff lying around that could be earning you money. Each item may only be worth a few bucks but that really adds up in the long run.

DO YOUR RESEARCH Never purchase something without checking the price elsewhere. Ring around to see if you can get a better deal, then see if someone will beat that price by 10 per cent. The five extra minutes you spend on this task could save you hundreds. READ MORE ONLINE

GO-TO GAL Author, mother, CEO – it’s all in a day’s work for Zoë Foster Blake, writes Emmy-Lou McKean. IF ANYONE IS qualified to give you beauty advice, it’s Zoë Foster Blake. During her time as beauty editor for Cosmopolitan and Harper’s Bazaar, Zoë tried and tested every conceivable beauty product and shared her experience with women all around the world. With more than 15 years’ experience as a journalist, the 35-year-old began building an online career with a beauty blog back in 2006 when, as Zoë says, most people thought a blogger was something you used to unblock your bathroom drain. Despite the relative obscurity of the medium, Zoë soon realised the exciting possibilities that came with blogging and how easily she could connect with her readers online. While maintaining a strong presence in the online beauty world and editing the pages of Australia’s top female publications, the self-confessed workaholic also became a best-selling author. Since 2009, Zoë has published two non-fiction titles and four novels. Her first non-fiction book, Amazing Face has become a go-to for beauty tips and tricks; a new and improved edition (Amazinger Face) will be available in stores later this month. Zoë co-authored relationship guide Textbook Romance with her husband, Australian funny-man Hamish Blake. The couple had been dating for two years before tying the knot in a private ceremony in 2012. As if her life doesn’t sound busy enough, 2014 was a blockbuster year for Zoë, with the publication of her best-selling novel The Wrong Girl in February. In April, Zoë launched Go-To, her own all-natural brand of skincare and on May 10, she gave birth to her first child, Sonny. Two years on, the adorable Sonny is taking social media by storm and a television adaptation of The Wrong Girl is currently in production, due to be screened by Channel Ten later this year. Her skincare brand is in a world of its own; during her time as a beauty editor, Zoë noticed that the market was missing a fuss-free, nourishing and beautiful skincare range. She was determined to create something full of pure, potent ingredients stylemagazines.com.au

with no nasties – a brand people would love, but that wouldn’t take itself too seriously. Go-To skincare is all that and more. The latest nourishing lip balm (aptly-named Pinky-Nudey Lips) combines two products that all women carry with them: “nourishing, restorative lip balm for hydration and a pinky-nudey lip gloss for shine and sass”. The product sold out soon after its release, exceeding all expectations, just like Zoë Foster Blake has been doing for years.

STONES CORNER Hidden shops and cosy cafés are just a stone’s throw away... re-discover Brisbane’s best corner. The quaint, tree-lined precinct of Stones Corner dates back to 1975. Many remember it as a hub for outlet shopping in days gone by, but the precinct is on the brink of a new era. Today, Stones Corner is a foodie’s paradise; heritage-listed buildings are home to a swarm of buzzing new cafés and bars, and trendy boutiques and eclectic shops line the streets. See the best of what the area has to offer at the Stones Corner Street Market. The biggest street market in Brisbane, there are more than 100 stalls dedicated to jewellery, craft, clothing, plants, flowers, kids’ toys and more.

MORE TO LOVE Nestled within the bustling hub that is Stones Corner, Moresish Cafe is serving up simple, modern and wholesome fare to local foodies. Owner Jeffrey Zaphiropoulos is passionate about the area and the way that the vintage charm is becoming cool again. “Stones Corner was booming once upon a time, and after many years and recent development, it has brought back so much potential to the area,” Jeff says. “I know it’s going to be bigger and better than what it used to be.” The area’s untapped potential was just one of the reasons Jeff decided to start up Moreish Cafe in Stones Corner two years ago. “It’s the vibe, the culture, the people, the history, and the variety. It is an area that just oozes character.”

Soak up the vibrant atmosphere with live music, street performers and kids’ entertainment, as the local businesses offer takeaway meals, coffees and juices.

Adding to the vibrant melting pot in the area, Moreish Cafe’s menu caters for every palate. The teriyaki salmon rice bowl makes for a hearty and delicious lunch, while the red velvet pancakes with vanilla bean cream are as beautiul as they are tasty.

When can you enjoy this experience? The markets run quarterly, with the next to be held on Sunday, July 24 from 10am to 3pm.

Whether you’re dining in or on-thego, you’ll love the fresh Campos Coffee brewed daily.

TRULY ELEVATED PERFORMANCE

Whether you love to make an entrance or prefer to be fashionably late, the new Jaguar F-PACE will have you arriving in style, writes Christie Sutherland. IN THIS DAY and age, we are accustomed to accelerating ourselves into anything and everything all at once. Remaining calm and cool is essential and made easier with a little help from your best accessory: your vehicle! Having a vehicle I can rely on to get me from A to B is important, but for me it’s more than just a mode of transportation – it’s a lifestyle. Aside from being a little slice of personal space where I can unwind on my trip home after a long day in the office, depending on my day, my car can be transformed into my very own workspace (and, on more occasions than one, my personal dressing room). When considering your four-wheeled accessory options, the all-new Jaguar F-PACE couples classleading interior space and exceptional on-road dynamics to deliver a prestige vehicle that is a true performance crossover. Encapsulating everything that Jaguar stands for (beautiful design, precise handling, luxurious interior finishes and cutting-edge technology) this 38

performance SUV, which launches this month, is now Jaguar’s most practical sports car. With a personality of its own, the F-PACE is technologically advanced to its core, ensuring you and your family are safe, entertained and always well-connected. For me, the nature of a modern lifestyle means that no two days are the same, meaning that my vehicle must be able to adapt easily.

The all-new Jaguar F-PACE couples classleading interior space and exceptional on-road dynamics.

The F-PACE has practicality that allows me to zip in and out of every nook and cranny in the city during the week and feel the wind in my hair on a weekend adventure. Jaguar defines luxury in every aspect of the brand and vehicle. From the gear dial to the home screen and aesthetic appeal, driving a Jaguar is an incredible experience. Whether you look to your vehicle for effortless transportation, luxurious comfort or for an escape to the great beyond, the Jaguar F-PACE is an exhilarating and efficient ride that will take you there in style. TEMPTATION, LUST AND vanity: the themes of Ballet Preljocaj’s Snow White will bring the fairytale to life. With dark shadows dominating the QPAC stage this September, you know that there are going to be some fairytale influences filtering down into fashion – and your wardrobe. Playing off the textures of the costumes created by Jean Paul Gaultier, the raw approach to winter fashion arises, with sinister shades of lip colours, black lace blouses, shimmering organza, high fashion pieces, oversized knits, pale neutrals and dainty accessories highlighting the trend. ALICE’S WONDERLAND Alice McCall sits down with Leith Wilson to discuss her career, upcoming collection and opening of her new Queensland store.

SINCE 2004, ALICE McCall’s signature bohemianmeets-angelic pieces have brought a refreshing aesthetic to the Australian fashion industry. Now recognised nationally and internationally, Alice is regarded as one of Australia’s top designers, and for good reason. Alice says that, while growing up, she was always drawn to a creative field, especially since her mother was a designer. “Some of my earliest memories involve me sitting on my mother’s lap at her old Singer sewing machine as she made clothes,” Alice says. Moving to London at the age of 19, Alice worked as a stylist for 10 years. She says it was while styling Australian singer-songwriter Natalie Imbruglia that she noticed her talent for design. “I would make some of her outfits for shows myself. I started to realise that these were the ones getting the most attention. “It was this gratification that gave me the 42

confidence to start my own label,” she says. It was these years spent working as a stylist that gave Alice a better understanding of designing garments that would appeal to women of all shapes and desires. “I worked as a stylist for Condé Nast and found that I was trying to make some of the dresses fit better on the models. “I really wanted to dress real women and make them feel confident while highlighting their best features,” she says. Her upcoming Spring/Summer collection, Back To Light, is no different. Likening her collection to the style of 1990s Vogue France cover girl Christy Turlington, Alice’s latest designs are a study in iridescent fabrics, encompassing light and reflection. “I love how lighting has the power to influence mood and I really drew upon this when designing the collection.

“You can expect lots of sheer bell sleeves, wide leg jumpsuits and, of course, lots of lace.” Alice has dubbed cohesion the most important factor when it comes to designing a label. “I can find inspiration in so many different things. The hardest and most important part of designing a collection is channelling all this inspiration to create one cohesive collection.” Wrapping up a very exciting international campaign (watch this space!), Alice says she is now focusing on expanding her label within the retail sector. And with the opening of her store in the Gold Coast’s Pacific Fair Shopping Centre, Alice is confident her products will relate to the Queensland customer. “Pacific Fair is emerging as a major shopping centre for designers such as Chanel and Dion Lee so I am in good company!”

Design icon? Coco Chanel. She was such a power player for dressing the female form. One thing we don’t know about you? I briefly styled Destiny’s Child. Favourite holiday destination? Today it’s LA. Favourite song at the moment? Anything from Beyoncé’s new album, Lemonade.

BOOT CAMP Style looks to Frankie4 Footwear as they revolutionise foot health. FROM THE MOMENT we wake up and get out of bed, we are on and off our feet. All day, every day. And this is only increasing, with a societal awareness that we need to keep moving. Many people don’t give their feet a second thought until they start to experience pain. However, thousands of people suffer from some form of pain every single day, with plantar fasciitis or heel pain being one of the most common

foot complaints. Podiatrist, physiotherapist and designer of Frankie4 Footwear Caroline McCulloch says that wearing a supportive shoe that cushions the heel and supports the arch and forefoot is recommended for all ages – and becomes even more important as we get older. “My focus when designing is to come up with styles that not only look great and are slimline and feminine,

but which also promote the natural position of the foot and movement of joints.” Frankie4 was born from Caroline’s desire to “save soles” in style by giving women fashionable options ranging from active sneakers and sandals to boots in sizes 6-13 that look great and have undeniable health benefits. IN HOLIDAY MODE Karla Spetic draws on her hometown of Dubrovnik for Memories, her Resort ’17 collection, writes Hannah Doody. SURROUNDED BY THE azure blues of the Adriatic Sea and dotted with terracotta rooftops and yellow sand, the walled city of Dubrovnik is a sparkling jewel on the edge of the Mediterranean. This beautiful location was home to Sydney-based designer Karla Spetic until age 11, and it was her childhood spent here that inspired her to create her Resort ’17 Collection, Memories. “I was feeling very nostalgic at the time,” says Karla. “I haven’t been back home for more than a decade – it’s such a long time and I miss my family and the food, the sea... everything, really.” Having launched her business back in 2008, Karla’s collections are often inspired by the senses, and her recent collection is no different. “I don’t seek inspiration; I feel it stylemagazines.com.au

should come naturally. It could be anything – a certain colour that I like at the time, a song, a memory, or seeing someone on the street. Anything can trigger an idea.” The collection is fit for a summer holiday, with shades of crisp whites and deep, inky blues on silk faille and silk georgette prevailing. Reinventing key silhouettes from her past (the Daisy dress was taken from her Spring/Summer 2010 collection), Memories unites scalloped edges, sheer panels and structured frills, all slithering across the body to reveal slices of skin. The postcard dress is digitally printed with a photograph of her hometown, the surrounding box pleats mimicking a postcard’s edge.

TAKING FIVE WITH KARLA SPETIC: What do you always carry in your bag? I love the Chanel eyebrow pencil. I mainly use the brush on the other end to brush my eyebrows – I have a thing for neat brows! And the Pure Papaya lip gloss – I can’t live without it! What is your signature style? Sometimes I’m in my jeans and t-shirt with a knit or coat over the top. Other days I wear lots of colour and dresses with sneakers. It’s always different! Where will we find you on a Saturday night? If my week was very hectic then I’d definitely have a quiet night in with a nice glass of wine and maybe a foreign film.

SELECTING A VENUE for your ceremony and reception can be an arduous task and one that can make or break a wedding. After meeting the Brisbane Racing Club Event Coordinator Jacqueline Moore, the engaged couple knew their new venue at Eagle Farm Racecourse would deliver on their dreams

HOSTING CHRISTMAS IN JULY We’ll use any excuse for a party and the mid-year celebration of Christmas in July is no exception, writes Emmy-Lou McKean. AN AUSTRALIAN CHRISTMAS typically consists of gathering the whole family for a lunch of mostly cold meats, salads, enough prawns to feed a small army and the long-awaited trifle. Christmas in July gives us a chance to create a Christmas celebration fit for winter, just like we see in the movies. FESTIVE FEAST • Impress your guests with a hearty meal such as a traditional roast or homemade shepherd’s pie complete with a mulled wine or cider. • Gather your guests around a campfire or

crackling fireplace to roast marshmallows and squish them between chocolate-coated biscuits for an Aussie s’more experience. No fireplace? No worries! Dunk a skewered marshmallow in a bowl of melted chocolate and dip it in biscuit crumbs for a no-fuss s’more pop! GOOD VIBES • Carols are essential at any Christmas party, but Christmas in July is a twist on tradition. Rather than enjoying choral delights, fill your playlist with

pop covers by the likes of Mariah Carey and Michael Bublé to keep the mood fun, festive and fabulous all night long. • Re-gifting an unwanted present from last Christmas may be considered tacky, but when everyone’s doing it, it can’t be that bad, right? Have your guests bring last year’s Christmas cast-offs wrapped and ready to play a version of White Elephant, where you pick from a pile or steal someone else’s new acquisition.

FEELING FRANÇAIS?

RED, ROSY CHEEKS?

TOP SECRET INFORMATION

WITH BASTILLE DAY fast approaching, we take a walk down the Champs-Élysées and immerse ourselves in all things French! From traditional blue, white and red to sophisticated palettes with metallic touches, sequins and monochrome looks, French-inspired themes are limited only by your imagination. Straight from the streets of Paris, we look to stylised Eiffel Towers, Louvre-inspired pyramids and traditional Metro signage in visual merchandising, while outdoor festivals enjoy life-sized props such as custom branded Fiats, bicycles (complete with baguette!) and even roaming entertainment with Moulin Rouge dancers, mime artists and other travelling acts. Gala dinners call for iconic centrepieces and statement room entrances to make a lasting impression. On a more informal scale, alfresco picnics imbue a countryside vibe – think laden wicker baskets, textured rugs and even provincial-style furniture settings with long tables. Whatever the occasion, bring a little Parisian flair to your next event – the options are endless!

ARE YOUR CHEEKS crimson, even though you’re not blushing and haven’t been in the sun? If so, your body could be telling you something. The most common causes of red cheeks and a red face include: • Inflammation/reaction • Environmental damage • Disease, i.e. diabetes and rosacea • High blood pressure • Infection or trauma • Some medications • Unsuitable cleansers or creams • Hormonal imbalances If left untreated, redness in the skin often gets worse. Not only will it look obvious, it may also lead to more uncomfortable conditions. Once diagnosed, you can often treat your red skin successfully with a combination of clinic therapies and a prescribed home care treatment. Sign up for our IPSP newsletter via our website or Facebook. Style readers can enjoy a free skin consultation in August.

ENTERTAINING WITH FLOWERS

APPS FOR BUSY PEOPLE

DECODING DIVORCE

THE VERITABLE FEAST of inspiration supplied by Pinterest, Instagram and magazines has pushed entertaining to another level. We love encouraging our customers to create their own floral arrangements for a rewarding experience. When planning your next event, start with the menu. For hearty winter meals, look for rich, warm colours; burgundy, gold and darker greenery are perfect for an evening of candles and red wine. Dahlias are in season right now and make the perfect setting for a Moroccan feast – think pomegranate, figs and saffron. Forage, forage, forage! Greenery is free and abundant in your garden or neighbourhood. Harvest magnolias, gardenias and trailing ivy in the early morning and keep in water until you are ready to use your new discoveries. Rusty tins, old jars, heirloom teapots and vintage water jugs make perfect vessels for your table. Op shops and Mum’s old china cabinets are full of inspiration. There is no right or wrong – let your inner florist shine! Book online for floral and styling workshops!

DIVORCE INEVITABLY LEADS to a lot of emotions – hurt, anger and disappointment being the most common. Divorce proceedings are usually not pleasant. For those that are new to the process, the first, and sometimes most shocking discovery is that Australian Family Law is based on a “no fault” system. Fault factors such as “adultery, desertion and cruelty”, have not existed as the basis for divorce in the Australian Family Law system for 40 years. In Australia, the sole requirement for obtaining a divorce is that the marriage has “broken down irretrievably”. This is evidenced by the married couple having been separated for a period of no less than 12 months. So how is property divided? Some may think that the unfaithful party should be entitled to fewer assets but fault plays no part there either. The only relevance that behaviour plays is in the context of how property is dealt with, whether it’s wasted or improved.

YOU CAN’T MULTI-TASK

CHOOSING CHILDCARE

ANTISOCIAL MEDIA

YOU ARE LYING to yourself if you think you’re a master of multi-tasking. Sorry to be blunt, but it’s true – and your brain agrees too. These days, we have so much information coming at us and we think we’re handling it all by multi-tasking. But what the brain is actually doing is “switching” between tasks rather than working on them simultaneously. This rapid shifting is a habit we have developed to cope with life in the 21st Century. Even if it feels like it’s helping, this habit is burning us out. In order to switch rapidly between tasks, the brain needs to use up neural resources and glucose or, in other words, sugar. When our brain runs out of sugar to help cope with all the stuff coming at us, we draw on our stress hormone: cortisol. When our cortisol resources are drained, we become quite overwhelmed. Those 3pm sugar cravings are starting to make sense now, right? So let’s be realistic and focus on one thing at a time, for as long as possible and complete the tasks before moving on to the next thing.

THE FIRST SIX years of a child’s life are critical for development; they establish a lifelong foundation of learning and wellbeing. Choosing your child’s early learning provider is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. Here are our top tips: • Curriculum: Find content-rich programs that are led by the interests of the child and include literacy, numeracy, science, art, music, and language to promote social, emotional, cognitive and physical development. • Educators: Ensure your children are nurtured, educated and respected. • Environment: Look for purposeful, beautiful and naturally-inspired indoor and outdoor areas where kids can explore and learn. • Communication: Strong relationships between the centre and families support the child’s thinking and learning, whilst informing parents of their experiences. At Guardian Early Learning Group, it is our passion to nurture a sense of curiosity, wonder and discovery in every child.

SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS such as blogs, Facebook and Instagram have given consumers unprecedented ability to respond loudly and publicly to products, services and experiences. The quasi-anonymous nature of these platforms has also led to a level of audacious vitriol not usually seen in face-to-face encounters. Reviews penned by dissatisfied customers often disregard circumstances or emotions and can cause anxiety, depression, sacking, business closures and more. So how should you deal with a negative review? Firstly, always respond in a timely manner; ignoring the issue will not make it go away. Acknowledge the problem or explain the situation. Remember to keep responses short, sweet and honest. If further discussion and recompense is required, suggest moving from the public eye to either a face-to-face or more private channel. Love it or hate it, social media is now an intrinsic part of our world – it’s how we manage it that sets a brand apart.

TREND: TIMELESS UNISEX COOL

THE MUST-HAVE VELVET JACKET

CUSTOMMADE RINGS

A GREAT PAIR of sunglasses can provide an ineffable rush, partly for their ability to add style instantly, but mostly because we live in them, especially in sunny Queensland. And shouldn’t the things we wear most make us feel good? Bespoke Californian eyewear designer Garrett Leight has created eyewear that truly captures the easy-going spirit of “California cool”. As Queenslanders, we can relate to this very well. Most of his frames are unisex, playing with iconic and sophisticated materials such as tortoise shell. They feature modernity and effortless design with contrasting details and clean lines alongside heritage-inspired shapes with offbeat accents. Creative colours and tints create timeless frames that are extremely light and comfortable. Praised for their casual-cool look, Garrett Leight shades are spotted courtside and on red carpets around the world. A Garrett Leight frame is a must-have accessory for men and women alike. Visit our boutique practice and discover this fabulous frame and sunglass range.

ONE OF MY favourite fabrics is silk velvet. Known for its elegance, soft drape and shimmering surface, it is beautiful to the touch. The most common velvet is cotton velvet which, compared with silk velvet, has a softer sheen and is less shiny. Although less luxurious, it’s the sturdiest and most durable; something to keep for a long time. Clothing has the ability to have you recognised and regarded both in the workplace and at social functions. Finding a suitable style of jacket for different activities is sometimes a challenge but the velvet jacket is one of those distinctions and it offers great versatility. Rich in effortless appeal, velvet is great for formal evening wear; midnight blue and black velvet looks best with a shawl collar or high peak lapel. A single-breasted jacket with peak lapel looks great in medium blues, plum or forest green with dark dress jeans for smart casual wear. You can also show a little more flamboyance with textured velvet but be careful: it’s easy to look overdone so keep the rest simple!

EVERYONE DESERVES AN engagement ring that reflects their style and personality. To be able to wear a piece that will tell your story for decades to come is something very special. Here’s how to ensure your custom-made ring is everything you hoped it would be: First and foremost, you should choose a jeweller who has a proven reputation for designing engagement rings. Remember to look for a jewellery store that specialises in diamonds, specifically one that has a qualified diamond grader who can help you hand-pick your diamond. It’s reassuring to know that you can be involved every step of the way. Ensure that your chosen jewellery store has a workshop with jewellers onsite and backs up their work with a lifetime manufacturing warranty for complete peace of mind. Purchasing a custom-made engagement ring doesn’t necessarily mean that it will be more expensive; in most cases, it can be quite the opposite! Let us help you discover the custom design experience at Xennox Diamonds.

Being private isn’t an unhealthy thing; privacy is about spending quality time with others to build intimacy, trust and respect. Secrecy, on the other hand, can be damaging to relationships. Especially if the secrets you’re hiding carry shame. A quality relationship that is built on integrity will offer our heart a safe place to rest and trust. We all deserve no less with those we love. Just as our secrets can make us sick, our relationships with ourselves and with others are only as healthy as the trust, respect, love and emotional transparency that we share. Are you harbouring a secret that is weighing on your mind and getting you down? It’s time to address it now.

Unit or a house? For capital growth, go for a house. If you want a low-maintenance investment and lifestyle, go for a unit. Two bedrooms or three? Two bedrooms. As an investor, you need to go where the tenants are and there’s currently more demand for two bedrooms than three. The best room to highlight when selling? As a general rule, kitchens and bathrooms sell properties, but I think it’s about the areas where people visualise their family spending time. Formal dining and lounge rooms have collapsed into casual living spaces which are really important. The one aspect of a property you’d pay more for? It’s all about a lifestyle on the water and I would put my money towards getting access to water – it’s a feature that few properties have. What should you do with $20,000? Buy property. If you’re retiring, you’ll be looking for strong cash flow to live on. If you’re young you’ll be looking for capital growth – something that will be worth double in 10 years.

PAINTING REAL ESTATE

LOCATION, LOCATION

KITCHEN FITOUT QUESTIONS

WHEN IT COMES to rental or investment properties, there are a few things that need to be taken into consideration. In addition to creating a welcoming environment for potential tenants, you need to take care of your investment. Look for products with more resilience than you would ordinarily use to ensure that wear and tear is minimal and easy to fix when it occurs. Painting is one of the best ways to help keep your property looking fresh and inspiring. Cheap painting is often the standard with rental properties, but this can be detrimental in future. Discuss potentional paints with your contractor. Properties near schools, for example, are more likely to attract couples with young children and a heavy-duty paint is advisable. You should also take into account potential colour-matching in the future. While an on-trend colour might seem attractive at the time, aim for neutrals and clean colour schemes as they will make it much easier to match furniture and decor to your home.

THE RIGHT LOCATION is one of the most important factors when finding a residential investment property. Here are some key factors to keep in mind when looking for a property that will provide long-term capital growth and the highest consistent net yield: • Ensure close proximity to employment centres, education, hospitals, existing and expanding infrastructure, lifestyle amenities and transport. • Opt for properties within a two- to 15-kilometre radius of the CBD where future supply is constrained by low-density planning laws. • Property located in highly-desirable suburbs with high percentages of owner-occupiers usually provides stronger demand from discerning tenants. • Areas with higher than average incomes and stable employment demographics generally result in strong tenancy demand. • Buy in areas with restricted future development sites, limited new and higher quality properties for rent, and low vacancies for existing older rental stock.

THE KITCHEN IS one of the most frequently used spaces in the whole house, so deciding on the perfect fit-out to suit your lifestyle is essential. Here are some questions everyone should ask before choosing kitchen appliances • How big do I want my oven? Do I want it freestanding or do I want a built-in? • Do I want a Combi-Steam oven or do I want a normal microwave? • Do I want a gas cooktop with wok burner? Or do I want an induction cooktop? • Do I want a pyrolytic oven (which cleans itself), or a normal oven? Newtons Home Appliances can help answer all these questions and more at their Winter Warmers event from 10-3pm (with the store open from 9-4pm) on Saturday, July 16. With cooking demonstrations and the opportunity to ask the experts all the questions you’ve been mulling over, the Newtons Home Appliances’ Winter Warmers event will help you find the right kitchen appliances to suit your home and your lifestyle.

THE RIGHT EDUCATION Choosing the perfect school for your child is difficult but being well-informed is essential to making right the choice, writes Emmy-Lou McKean. THE TRANSITION FROM primary school to secondary school often brings with it a mixture of excitement and nerves – and that’s just for the parents! Everything a student learns throughout their schooling life, both socially and academically, will help decide what kind of adult they become, which makes the task of choosing a school all the more daunting. In order to choose the right school for your child, you need knowledge and perseverance. Understanding the ins and outs of the education system can be difficult so it’s important to gather information and evaluate your options before deciding on the right fit for your family.

For most parents, the priority is to find a safe and happy learning environment that encourages both emotional and intellectual growth. These kinds of schools are more likely to help your child learn. You may also need to evaluate whether the school meets any special needs or interests your child might have, whether they be academic, sporting, musical or otherwise. Everyone wants to give their children the best possible opportunities, especially when it comes to education. Whatever you choose, regardless of finance, convenience, location or syllabus, a child’s high school experience comes down to combined support at home and at school.

GROOMED GUYS Great grooming isn’t just for the ladies – guys can also benefit from professional help. Brooke Jesberg

THERE ARE TWO main reasons why men come to Brooklyn Beauty Bar: managing problem skin and, well, hairiness. While we have some regular FIFO workers who come in for a quick mani-pedi before going home to their wives and girlfriends, most of our male clients are looking to be de-fuzzed or for help with problem skin. We love helping men look and feel good about their skin. Our herbal active peels are one of the quickest and best ways to clear and freshen up skin. For uneven pigmentation, broken capillaries and acne scarring, we recommend IPL skin rejuvenation. IPL is highly effective and gives extraordinary long-term or permanent results. As for combatting hairiness, lots of guys have overcome their morbid fear of waxing (the movie The 40-Year-Old Virgin has a lot to answer for!).

But these days, most men are turning to IPL to achieve permanent hair reduction, especially on their back, chest and neck. They’ve done their research and know this is the best solution for unwanted hair. Just when you thought I might’ve forgotten to mention eyebrows, let me tell you that getting men’s brows right takes some real skill and a lot of practise! Waxing is often too precise a method and can result in a startled Ken doll look. Our threading experts are the go-to for guys who want a natural but well-groomed shape. Clear skin and hair only where you choose? Guys, get your groom on at Brooklyn Beauty Bar! BROOKLYN BEAUTY BAR 5/15 JAMES ST, FORTITUDE VALLEY P 0421 202 447 BROOKLYNBEAUTYBAR.COM.AU

A HERBAL REMEDY?

LOW-BROW SALONS

THE BENEFITS OF LASER TONING

THERE ARE MANY remedies advertised online for the treatment of spider and varicose veins in a variety of forms, from pills to body wraps. Cheap or expensive, all seem to guarantee quick, pain-free removal of your veins. Medically, these products are termed venoactive drugs (VAD) or phlebotonic drugs. They are mostly derived from plant extracts and show various modes of action depending on the individual drug. Benefits include reduction in capillary leakage, anti-inflammatory effects and improvements in venous tone and the lymphatic system. So what is the level of scientific evidence? Pentoxifylline, sulodoxine and micronized purified flavonoid fraction have demonstrated some benefit to patients with chronic venous disease in trials. However, strong recommendations with Level 1 evidence cannot currently be made. Until more evidence is gathered, sclerotherapy and endothermal ablation remain the most successful methods. For more information, visit The Leg Vein Doctor today.

YOU MAY THINK receiving a cheap eyebrow service is a win, but you might want to rethink your next quick brow job! Many salons advertise that they can give you amazing brows for next to nothing – and why not? If they make a mistake, your eyebrows will grow back soon enough, right? Wrong! What most people don’t know is that a quick eyebrow job can result in lasting damage to the brows, especially when the hairs are not treated correctly. If you’re not careful, what might have seemed like a brilliant short-term fix could soon become a long-term issue! So what are the solutions? One of the best things about The Brow Bar is that every Brow Lift-Shaping is a complete service, allowing the Arch Angels the time to focus on the brows. Every hair is equally important and needs the appropriate care, especially if your brows are still recovering from a bad experience. Just lie back, relax and dream about your soon-to-be amazing brows with absolutely no worry about long-lasting damage!

PIGMENTATION OF THE skin is a struggle for many, especially for those with darker complexions. Laser toning is a treatment that helps improve the quality of the skin’s dermal layers by using a gentle heating action to improve your skin’s tone and stimulate collagen stores. It is less invasive than fractional resurfacing or having a chemical peel and typically requires less (or no) downtime after the procedure. If you want to reduce or delay the signs of ageing or help extend the benefits of other treatments, then laser toning is right for you. The other benefits of laser toning include minimal discomfort, quick treatments and the opportunity for all skin types to be treated. Laser toning can be used in conjunction with home topical applications of vitamin A, B and C serums, along with in-clinic IV-infused vitamin C and glutathione. We are now offering this full laser toning treatment, including IV infusions at Cosmetic Image Clinics.

PLANNING PREGNANCY

CHALLENGES OF CHILDREN

THE WEIGHT LOSS SECRET

THERE’S MORE TO planning a pregnancy than ensuring your finances can support another person. It’s important to get the right prepregnancy advice and prepare for the physical and emotional journey that pregnancy will bring. Talk to your GP about preparing for pregnancy. This usually involves ensuring that you begin your pregnancy at a healthy weight, with healthy eating and exercise at the forefront of your mind. Supplements such as folic acid are usually advised. If you have a medical condition, it should ideally be addressed prior to becoming pregnant and may involve a visit to the appropriate specialist. It’s also important to ensure that your immunisations are up to date. If you’ve been trying to conceive for 12 months (or for six months if you’re over the age of 35) without success, ask your GP for a referral to a fertility specialist. Not interested in starting a family before the age of 35? Women in their mid20s to mid-30s should consider freezing their eggs to keep options open down the track. Visit us today to find out more.

CHILDREN ADD LIFE, fun, energy and meaning to a couple’s life, and they invariably also add a lot of stress and conflict. The challenge faces mothers and fathers equally, whether they work or are the primary caregiver. Children can be financially, emotionally and physically depleting. If parents don’t acknowledge this reality, there is a huge risk of succumbing to the stress, thinking there is something inadequate about their parenting or wrong with their marriage. More often than not, the issue is that it’s simply damn tough to be a sane, happy, effective parent! For parents to stay together and still like each other, it’s imperative to be well-organised with routines, agree on chores and behaviour management, develop a support system of quality understanding friends, do fun things regularly, actively build intimacy and ensure they take time to relax together. If parental love is to flourish, the challenges of kids need to be addressed so they are enjoyed as the blessings they are.

THE SECRET TO good health is to only eat wholefoods. Shop locally and, wherever possible, focus on unprocessed foods – avoid buying anything in a packet or box. When you give up foods full of preservatives, additives, fillers and emulsifiers, you’re eating the way nature intended. Your body will thank you for it. Don’t have the time or inclination to cook? This is where Dietlicious can help. We offer: • Cleanse programs for three, five, and 10 days • 1200, 1500 and 1800 calorie plans • Individual meals • Low/no fructose • Gluten- and dairy-free options • Vegetarian and vegan options We make it easy for you to feed yourself well. TOP OF THE CHOPS

The ’70s long locks trend is low-maintenance.. perfect for those chilly winter mornings that require a little extra sleep-in time.

The change of seasons heralds inevitable dehydration and damage for our hair. But new season trends are the perfect excuse for a little hair TLC, writes Emmy-Lou McKean.

FRINGE BENEFITS The cooler weather always inspires the addition of a fringe for a little extra warmth. This season it’s all about a soft and long textured fringe. This look has no limits as it sits better as it grows out, giving you the option to style it to the side, as middle part bangs or as a full fringe.

WE CHECKED IN with some of our favourite boutique hair salons to get the lowdown on this season’s top hair trends. ’70S REVIVAL This season, we are seeing the return of ’70s-inspired free-flowing length. Embracing the natural texture of your hair and opting for a softer cut rather than structured layers and blunt lines is the key to nailing this look. The ’70s long locks

trend is low-maintenance and requires minimal heat styling, which makes the cut perfect for those chilly winter mornings that require a little extra sleep-in time.

COLOUR MELT As the temperature drops, we tend to deepen our hair colour. To avoid a big colour correction when you want your blonde back in summer, hairdressers recommend changing up your tone instead. A blonde or brunette colour melt is a softer approach that will give you the desired look in shiny, progressive stages rather than a dull all-over colour.

SPICE UP YOUR LIFE It’s not just another herb; you might be surprised what a sprinkle of turmeric could do for your health and skin, writes Amber Lowther. ACNE & SCARRING Mixing turmeric with sandalwood powder and lemon juice helps to reduce acne and cure any breakouts. Make sure you only leave it on for a maximum of 10-15 minutes. (Seriously. Set a timer.) Don’t panic if your face is left a little yellow afterwards; just wash off the excess with a warm cloth. This face mask helps clear inflammation and reduces oil production. If the mask didn’t do it for you the first time, mix turmeric with warm water and leave it on any acne scars for 15 minutes. It won’t work for all scars, but could do wonders for those close to the surface of the skin. HAIR LOSS & DANDRUFF Turmeric contains the component curcumin, which has properties that are stylemagazines.com.au

used in hair loss treatment. Mix turmeric with some olive oil to form a paste and apply to your scalp before showering. Leave it on for 15 minutes and then wash with natural shampoo. CRACKED HEELS Mix a couple of teaspoons of turmeric with coconut oil and apply to your cracked heels. Sit back and relax for 20 minutes, then rinse off the mixture with warm water and soap. It may stain your feet a little, but if you do it regularly, it will soften and help your heels over time. There are even more benefits of using turmeric outside of the kitchen, but you’ll have to head to stylemagazines.com.au to find them all. READ MORE ONLINE

SHAPE UP! The powerhouse behind B Brows by Vana tells Style how a strong brow can boost your confidence. A WELL-SHAPED BROW can make or break a look; this is something Vana Handukic knows all too well. An accredited brow specialist for 10 years, Vana says she has always had an eye for detail. “Everything always had to be in line. Especially brows! I would look at people’s faces and think how I could improve them. I still do,” she laughs. Armed with loads of sheer talent, an infectious personality and overwhelming client demand, Vana decided to open her own business in the B Clinic on James Street. Three years on, Vana’s business is booming, with stars from My Kitchen Rules, Married at First Sight and even Channel 7 newsreaders calling on her expertise to transform their brows. With her signature Feather Touch brow treatments booking out at a phenomenal speed, Vana says her method is a great way to get brows looking on point. “The look is completely natural and pain-free! No one will believe they are actually tattooed on!

Before & After “They last up to 18 months so you can say goodbye to your brow powder for a while,” she says. For those who want to perfect their natural brow shape, Vana’s Signature B Brow Shape Makeover is an incredible option. She will sculpt, wax, pluck and tint your brows into arch perfection and have you leaving with Cara Delevingne look-alikes. FOOD+DRINK PENNE FOR YOUR THOUGHTS The minds behind beloved Sydney restaurants Quay and Otto Ristorante have made Brisbane their second home, writes Christie Sutherland. OTTO BRISBANE IS in a league of its own – that much is clear from the moment you walk into the brand-new million-dollar development that is 480 Queen Street. We enter via the tall escalators and are welcomed by The Last Word, Tanqueray Gin, Luxardo Maraschino and Green Chartreuse – the perfect introduction to this grand space. We are led to a window seat that perfectly frames the Brisbane River and city skyline; though we’re only four floors up, the views are a feast for the senses. Offering contemporary cuisine with Italian influences, it’s hard to choose from the multitude of dishes when your tastebuds are this excited. I quickly decide that this is the kind of restaurant where you just have to order everything. As an oyster fan, the first course is a no-brainer for me. The Sydney rock oysters are served natural with orange granita, fresh and rich in stylemagazines.com.au

flavour. I’m in heaven from my first mouthful and have no qualms about trying to hog the plate. From there, we delve into the meatier side of the menu with a platter of San Daniele Prosciutto, Wagyu Bresaola and hand-rolled grissini. Nothing beats great meat and incredible pastry from an Italian kitchen. One of the things I love about Italian cuisine is that the menu really leads you to the main meal. Zucchini flowers with ricotta, Pecorino, tomato confit and eggplant are literally bursting with flavour and the light batter covering is incredible. Each mouthful is complementary and every course tells a little story in the lead-up to the main event. It’s hard to decide between the swordfish and the Wagyu for the main, but the latter wins. We cleanse our palates before the showstopper with an Italian classic side, the caprese salad: tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, basil and extra virgin olive oil. Shared between two, the Wagyu short rib

with a dainty salad of pickled carrots, cucumber and salsa verde is a real treat. One of my other favourite dishes is a strozzapreti twisted pasta with banana prawns, garlic, chilli, black olives, tomato and calamari sauce. It’s clear that I could dine on the savoury dishes forever but it’s time for the finale. The dessert special is enough to make your head spin. Imagine rich tiramisu gelato spiked with crisp chocolate and coconut tuiles, soft sponge finger biscuits with the stealthy dry warmth of Marsala wine. I can’t get enough of this dish. It’s a monumental finish to a decadent evening and I know that I’ll dream about it for days to come. OTTO BRISBANE LEVEL 4, 480 QUEEN ST, BRISBANE OTTORISTORANTE.COM.AU

FOODIE EMPIRES Meet the people behind some of Brisbane’s favourite places to eat and drink, writes Hannah Doody.

MOUBMENT GROUP

JASON COATS

The Apo, Gerard’s Bar and Charcuterie, Gerard’s Bistro, Hatch & Co, Kiosk, The Defiant Duck and Laruche.

Eleven Rooftop Bar, The Jetty South Bank and Bulimba.

It all started when Elie Moubarak opened Lychee Lounge 16 years ago in West End. After its success, Elie teamed up with his younger siblings, Johnny and Katie, to open Laruche Bar in Fortitude Valley. Katie says their success stems from having cultivated an appreciation for different ways of doing things. “We all value the power of design, music, art and food, and these four elements are the backbone of each of our venues,” she says. Being equally strong-minded siblings doesn’t come without its complications, but the Moubaraks say this just fuels their passion for the Brisbane food scene. “We are all contributing to something bigger,” says Katie. “We are putting Brisbane on the map.”

Jason Coats closed Liquorish in 2009 to make way for riverside venues The Jetty at Bulimba, and a sister restaurant at South Bank in 2012. Jason says Brisbane’s food scene has transformed recently. “It used to be all fine dining, but lately we’ve seen the revolution of themed venues – burgers, American diners, Mexican, Asian. Our customers are now well-travelled and cultured, so the food scene has evolved to match.” A trip to Istanbul was the catalyst for opening his most recent venue, Eleven Rooftop Bar. “I was enjoying the spectacular rooftop bars when I said to the boys, ‘Do you think this would work in Brisbane?’ Then the opportunity arose with the venue and its 270-degree views of the city.” The secret to his success? “Great location, great people and consistent product.”

In 2012, Damian Griffiths left his law career to open Brisbane’s first hotel and rooftop bar, Limes Hotel. Over the years, he transformed a once-quiet area of Fortitude Valley, opening Alfred & Constance (“a café, restaurant, beer garden, tiki bar and nightclub together as one”), Kwan Brothers (“an amalgamation of Japanese izakayas and street vendors of Southeast Asia”) and Alfredo’s. Damian attributes his success to intuition, knowing and engaging with his audience, and having a hands-on approach to his work. What does the future hold? Damian is currently working on projects for Brisbane, the Gold Coast and beyond. READ MORE ONLINE Elie, Katie and Johnny Moubarak

TOASTY BRISBANE VENUES Stop your shivering; Emily Halverson has found the best Brisbane venues with fireplaces.

Cowch Chalet

WINTER SHOULD NOT be a thing. Your heating bill goes through the roof, your summer clothes go to waste and all the fluffy socks and soothing baths in the world can’t warm you up. But you don’t have to restrict yourself to tinned soup on the couch. Throw on those brand-new boots, grab your friends and head out to these totally toasty Brisbane venues: CHALET BAR, SPRING HILL This cosy underground hideaway in Spring Hill is as close as you can get to an après-ski lodge bar

without leaving Brisbane. The intimate candle-lit setting is filled with gorgeous chesterfield lounges that invite you to sit, relax and enjoy while slowly sipping on your favourite drink. STATLER & WALDORF, PETRIE TERRACE While it IS named after those two cranky Muppets, Statler & Waldorf is anything but gloomy. This good old-fashioned pub takes its food seriously, paired with a slick modern interior and friendly vibes. Sit back by the fire and enjoy a menu of traditional bar food with seasonal twists.

COWCH, SOUTH BANK Brisbane’s original dessert bar radiates flare and sophistication all the way from its central fire pit to the extravagant colour palette, mood lighting and contemporary décor. Roam around the South Bank Parklands and then head to Cowch on a Friday or Saturday night to take advantage of its fun and laidback atmosphere with a decadent marshmallow martini, a craft beer, a glass of wine, or a deluxe hot chocolate (drool). PETER’S TIPS FOR SELECTING TRUFFLES

TRUFFLE TIME Superior Fruit owner Peter Maniatis explains the importance of trusting your truffle dealer and why cooking with truffle at home is better. IF YOU HAVEN’T heard about the growing truffle trend, it’s time to get educated. Truffles are essentially a fungus that grows underground within the roots of trees and they’re sinfully delicious. These tasty delicacies are only in season during the winter months, usually hitting the market around June and in high demand until the end of their short-lived season in July. Truffles have an earthy mushroom taste to them and even the smallest quantity of truffle can pack a punch in any dish. Peter Maniatis, owner of Superior Fruit & Wendy’s Kitchen, explains that we are privileged to live in Australia. In many cases, Australian truffles match and even surpass those of other countries that are more experienced in the truffle trade. Over the years, Superior Fruit has developed a strong and trusting relationship with truffle growers stylemagazines.com.au

in Tasmania and Western Australia, striving to ensure confidence in the quality of this expensive product that is freighted right to their door. “It is so important to our farmers, local growers and primary industries that people buy Australian truffles,” says Peter. “This is a product that can never be mass produced as it takes time, money and knowledge to produce the truffles.” This product is a true luxury, with a single small truffle selling for upwards of $20. Luckily, the size of a truffle does not alter the taste or aroma. A little bit of flavour goes a long way and just a dash of truffle can turn your dinner into an exquisite culinary experience. SUPERIOR FRUIT & WENDY’S KITCHEN 365 HONOUR AVE, GRACEVILLE P 3379 7508 FACEBOOK.COM/SUPERIORFRUIT

THE HARDEST THING ABOUT USING TRUFFLES IS BUYING ONE. IT’S IMPORTANT TO TRUST YOUR TRUFFLE DEALER AS SOME RETAILERS MAY BE SELLING TRUFFLES THAT MAY NOT BE AS FRESH AS THEY CLAIM. TRUFFLES ARE GENERALLY AT THEIR BEST FOR ABOUT 10 DAYS AFTER HARVEST SO MOST DEALERS SHOULD BE ABLE TO GUARANTEE SEVEN DAYS OF LIFE FOR YOUR TRUFFLE. PLAN BEFORE PURCHASING YOUR TRUFFLE. IF YOU INTEND TO USE TRUFFLE IN YOUR FRIDAY NIGHT DINNER, PURCHASE YOUR TRUFFLE ON TUESDAY OR WEDNESDAY AND SPEND THE NEXT FEW DAYS INFUSING INGREDIENTS. POP YOUR TRUFFLE IN A SEALED CONTAINER IN THE FRIDGE WITH SOME ARBORIO RICE AND THE AROMA WILL INFUSE THE RICE, GIVING YOU MORE MILEAGE ONCE YOU’VE CONSUMED YOUR TRUFFLE.

TRAVEL THE BEST OF BANFF Banff and its surrounding National Park has become a magnet for Australian tourists, writes Caitlyn Spanner. WHEN YOU ARRIVE in the picturesque town of Banff, Alberta, the cold temperatures and aweinspiring scenery of the Canadian Rockies are sure to take your breath away. But the thing that surprised me most was the sheer amount of Australians living in the area. Once I had taken in all the magnificence that is Banff and the surrounding National Park on my visit earlier this year, I understood why it had became a magnet for Aussies. The world-class snowboarding is an obvious drawcard for young Australians in particular. A range of different locations cater to all levels of experience, from sensational pro right down to total newbie. It’s also a perfect spot for wanderlusting Aussies to gain some employment on the slopes or in hospitality. On my trip, I was lucky enough to stay at Sunshine Mountain Lodge at Sunshine Village for a night. It was the ideal spot to relax and unwind after a full-on day of snowboarding (or at least attempting to). Other hotspots in the area include Mt Norquay and the Lake Louise Ski Resort. With more than 200 restaurants in the small 80

ADVENTURE, WORLD-CLASS DINING AND BREATHTAKING SCENERY – IT’S NO WONDER AUSTRALIANS GRAVITATE TOWARDS THIS BEAUTIFUL PART OF THE WORLD.

town of Banff alone, it would be a shame for a visitor to miss out on the local foodie scene. If fine dining is your thing, you cannot go past the Eden Restaurant at The Rimrock Resort Hotel. Offering AAA Five Diamond dining with a stunning view of the Rockies and exceptional service, this is one experience to put on the top of your list. You also must try the local delicacy, poutine! The hot chips, gravy and cheese curd combo will warm you up from the inside out. My pick for poutine: Eddie Burger + Bar. If I can recommend anything, it’s that you should hire a car when visiting Banff National Park. There’s so much to see in the area, with pristine

lakes, wolf sanctuaries, glaciers, hot springs and incredible animals that look like they’ve jumped straight out of childhood picture books. This area of the world was not only beautiful, it was also incredibly serene. It’s so easy to find peace in a place that is relatively untouched and intimidating in all its natural splendour. That was just one of the reasons Banff left me with a new appreciation for my own country. Although the landscapes (and climates) are polarising, I finally understood how foreigners feel when they see the sweeping red Australian Outback or stunning tropical beaches that we sometimes take for granted. SUNSHINE ON A RAINY DAY If you’re looking for a romantic escape this winter, the perfect break is waiting on the Sunshine Coast shoreline, writes Candice Jackson. ON A RECENT trip to Caloundra’s Rumba Beach Resort with my partner, the sunshine didn’t peek through the clouds until the very last moment, but our stay couldn’t have been brighter! On our trip, I learnt that a romantic holiday away with your partner shouldn’t be measured by the amount of candle-lit dinners or sunset walks along the beach; it should be dependent on the amount of quality time you spend together and the moments and memories you share along the way. We arrived at Rumba Beach Resort as the sun was setting and the local lorikeets were singing. In our Resort Spa Suite, we were greeted with a luxury romance hamper with a bottle of red wine, Lindt chocolates, massage oil, bath salts, slippers stylemagazines.com.au

We arrived at Rumba Beach Resort as the sun was setting! and hot chocolate with marshmallows. Like that wasn’t heaven enough, we were also given unlimited in-room movies. And you should have seen the size of the spa bath! Seriously amazing. We were more than content to stay indoors and admire the beach view from our private balcony, but we did spend our fair share of time strolling the beachside boardwalk and frequenting the trendy cafés below. We even booked in for a couples massage at a local masseuse, Sheer Bliss Beauty

Day Spa. I totally recommend it! While some save their couple getaways for summer, I would book another cosy winter stay in a heartbeat. TRACY’S FAVE SPOTS

ALTERIOR MOTIF

LUXE MEETS ECO-FRIENDLY Everything you need is within reach; Viridian Noosa Residences ticks all the boxes, writes Tracy Sinclair (Johnston). AS SOMEONE WHO commutes daily between the Gold Coast and Brisbane, the last thing I want to do on holiday is drive to the beach, shops or anywhere else, once I’m there. My idea of a perfect short break is somewhere you can park the car and never have to get back in it again. Viridian Noosa Residences easily ticks that box. The resort is just a five-minute walk to Hastings Street, Main Beach and Noosa National Park. Another box is ticked with the open-air living that hits you when you walk through the front door and the stunning views of Laguna Bay and Great Sandy National Park. We’re feeling relaxed and deliriously happy with our holiday abode. Crack open the bubbles, put on some music... ahhhh. Everything about Viridian Noosa Residences screams luxe treehouse (think Tarzan and Jane, but a smidgen better). Nestled against the hillside and surrounded by natural bushland, these architecturally-designed villas have been cleverly positioned to capture the view with plenty of glass and three balconies off the living areas. Our spacious two-level, 2 bedroom villa would be perfect for two couples or a family of five or six (depending on villa room configuration). 82

It has everything you would expect from a luxury property: beautifully decorated living areas and bedrooms, a modern gourmet kitchen with walk‑in pantry and dishwasher, full laundry and double garage. Packed with state-of-the-art entertainment systems, the living and dining areas are spacious enough for the whole tribe to spread out. Add to this the resort’s heated swimming pool and it really is ideal for a family beach holiday. Hastings Street offers a diverse range of boutiques and plenty of eateries from takeaways to five-star dining and bars. I can’t go past the laidback vibe of Noosa Surf Club; naturally, it has a prime position overlooking Noosa’s Main Beach and is the perfect spot for a casual lunch on the deck while you watch the surfers clamber over the rocks to get out and catch the waves back in. But of course, for me, the appeal of Noosa Viridian Residences is that you can enjoy an amazing meal, a couple of drinks, (or shop to your heart’s content) and work it off as you walk up the hill to your tranquil eco-friendly villa among the trees.
