NOTE T
his month’s edition is exceptionally special for Style, as we celebrate 18 years since our first issue. It may be our coming of age, however we kinda’ feel like we’ve been early bloomers from the beginning. There’s no doubt that over the years we’ve grown a distinctive brand from the ground up – always adapting, evolving and staying ahead of the curve. Yet, what many may not know is that behind the magazine you see each month is an even bigger machine that is Style Media, our creative and content agency – you could call it our silent achiever. For over 10 years we have been successfully producing content for and working with some of Australia’s largest global brands in the property sector – including retail, residential and retirement. I look forward to sharing more about this with you over the coming months. But, back to our baby Style Magazine, and who better to feature on our birthday cover than Bree McCann (Warren). Bree epitomises Style’s maxim of being yourself, being fearless, being body confident and being down-to-earth – qualities that we admire and always aspire to. The ultimate professional, we first met Bree at a Self Love Festival that I emceed at Cairns Central Shopping Centre. We loved her then, as we do now, and we can’t thank Bree enough for gracing our pages. We captured these stunning images on board the spectacular M.V. Catalina Noosa (check out Pg 58) in Bree’s hometown. You can also check out our BTS video at stylemagazines.com.au and @stylemagazines – shot by Chris Dodd @chrisdoddmedia. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our advertisers past and present, and also our readers who continue to support and shop with the businesses featured. We love bringing Brisbane to you each month and the fab people that make up our flourishing River City. Now... we’re off to celebrate with our first legal drink (wink wink). @styletracy Cheers!

ll or nothing is our inspiration for this luxury trend edit. We feature cult Copenhagen collections to laidback labels from Los Angeles, our own Wallace Bishop Jewellers and other classic brands from the States. Think of those investment pieces that will add big value and mix well with the rest of your wardrobe to create stylish outfits that push the limits. Quality over quantity is our jam. We believe you should own less, choose well and do your part for the environment to avoid clothing ending up in landfill. A pair of cowboy boots will amp up any outfit (or to kick up your heels at Coachella – see Pg 56), and they get better with age. Don’t save those statement pieces for special events only. Pop ‘em on for work or a night out – there’s no point having them hangin’ in your wardrobe collecting dust. Modern and edgy is exactly what we’re vibing right now.

he’s a Brisbane native and bona fide beach babe, but it hasn’t all been laidback living for this Queenslander, who has rocked the boat when it comes to body diversity and we couldn’t be more in awe of her success within the fashion industry. Her story begins way back to when she was studying at The University of Queensland, when curve modelling didn’t really exist in Australia and there was little work available. “It wasn’t until I was on holiday in New York in 2010 and was signed to a major plus size division that things started to take off,” Bree says. But the beginning of her career wasn’t

|
all smooth sailing, as she was stuck in a type of modelling limbo. “People didn’t really know what to do with my size. I’m a size 12-14 so a good two or three sizes bigger than many of the regular models but I was tall and in shape, so I didn’t really fit into the plus size world either. I could only work for a few select plus size clients and spent my life trying to find ways to appear bigger,” Bree says. There’s no doubt that back then the fashion industry was dominated by a onesize-fits-all approach, but now Bree’s body is represented and celebrated, adding more and more confidence to women around the globe.
STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU
@STYLEMAGAZINES
Many people assume modelling is easy, but Bree explains the real hustle that comes with all the lights, camera and action. “I had to work really hard to change people’s perceptions about my size and show there was room for different sizes in fashion. You have to learn early on to back yourself, protect your best interests, adapt fast and navigate life in different countries. There’s a whole mechanical side to modelling you rarely see and for me that’s the challenging part. My life is a logistical nightmare pretty much all the time.” From New York to Australia, Bree is now undoubtably one of the biggest role models for women when
it comes to body positivity, a term that was nowhere to be found in the fashion vernacular when she started. This year alone the supermodel has travelled to Anguilla, L.A., Miami, New York, Capetown, Copenhagen, London, Tulum and Jamaica. Now calling the blissful beaches of Noosa home, Bree says it was a real turning point in her career. “I honestly thought I was leaving New York and moving away from my career, but it’s actually turned out even better at home. I keep getting busier and busier which is crazy because traditionally for models it was the opposite. There’s an element of longevity and being relatable that wasn’t there before.” Inspired by women who, like herself, push the boundaries such as Elle Macpherson for
creating a career that has lasted a lifetime and Ashley Graham and Tara Lynn for smashing every rule within fashion industry, Bree most of all is inspired by her agents. “My Australian agents at Bella and my US agents at Jag, have both believed in me since the beginning and fought so hard for so long to push the industry towards diversity,” she says. “People are demanding diversity now and brands are looking for it, so as I’ve grown as a model, my body confidence has grown with it. It’s been a steady incline to where I am now. And even now I have my moments. Nobody wakes up in the morning feeling perfect. I think it’s important to remember that. It’s normal to have those doubts, it’s just what you chose to do with them that matters.”
I COULD ONLY WORK FOR A FEW SELECT PLUS SIZE CLIENTS AND SPENT MY LIFE TRYING TO FIND WAYS TO APPEAR BIGGER.”

orn in Yeronga, I attended Brisbane Grammar School and studied at University of Queensland. I’m as stereotypically Brissy as you can get. After high school I was looking for a job just like everyone else and my mother told me I would be good in hotels. I could talk, and so in 2009 I put in an application for the very first Emporium Hotel at Fortitude Valley. I started as a concierge, as a porter on a driveway – that’s where my career all started. I worked there for five years from bags to bars and I even did a year doing a sales and marketing internship, all whilst studying commerce and management. After my studies, I landed a grad role at Ernst &

Young in 2014 on Eagle Street. From there I was offered a job in Sydney with Aussie Home Loans in procurement and property. After two years I got a call form Tony John from Anthony John Group who owns Emporium Hotels. We had always stayed in touch and they had a phenomenal year ahead selling the old Emporium Hotel Fortitude Valley and moving to a new location. I flew up to Brisbane and Tony walked me through what was the construction site of Emporium Hotel South Bank. From the basement to the rooftop, I fell in love with it and was offered the position of owner’s representative. We loved interviewing Charles. fter performing on the busking stage at Splendour for the past few years, Ziggy will have his first official stage this year, alongside big acts including Chance The Rapper, Tame Impala, Childish Gambino, Ocean Alley, Winston Surfshirt, Foals, Hayden James and plenty more. Returning home in July for the first time in four months after his ‘Laps Around The Sun Tour’ in Europe, North America and Canada, Ziggy is looking forward to performing in his home country and catching a few of his favourite artists including Matt Corby and Chance during the festival.
On tour, he has the company of his team mainly made up of his family and friends sister as manager, dad takes care of accounts, two aunties and his two brothers are on board, and of course mum comes along for the ride! Backstage, Ziggy has a calm ritual. He’s not a drinker and in fact, he’s a big fan of tea! He always has his yoga mat, where he likes to relax and meditate to focus before the big show, so he can perform the best he can for his fans. He loves to feel the connection between him and the crowd. His career started out when his parents gifted him a left-handed guitar during his
late teen years. He started out busking and performing at cafes and backyard shows. Ziggy’s soulful acoustic music has a slight John Butler and Jack Johnson vibe to it. If you listen closely to his lyrics, he sings about personal endeavours and environmental concerns, as he feels it’s important to share and educate people on these issues through his music. Catch him on stage this year at Splendour In The Grass on Sunday July 21! Keep an eye out for him busking on the streets of Byron Bay during the weekend from July 19 until July 21, and if you can’t make it down south this year, hit up his tunes on Spotify.

ST. AGNI Brisbane has recently gained an internationally renowned brand founded by love birds, Lara and Matt Fells. WORDS BY KIRI JOHNSTON

LARA’S PICKS
nown as the original creators of the woven mules, the Byron Bay based brand has grown a cult following over the years due to their high quality and unique designs. They could easily be described as ‘trailblazers’ in the fashion industry, always thinking outside the box and creating timeless and never-seen-before styles using shapes and textures such as linen, leather and natural fibres. Their earthy, laid-back and relaxed aesthetic represents the landscapes of the small coastal town they’ve called home for the past eight years. Founded by Lara and Matt Fells back in 2014, the couple fell in love in Lara’s home state of Tasmania whilst Matt was travelling from the UK. They travelled back and forth between Australia and the UK before finally settling down in Byron where they currently reside with their young son, Jude and cavoodle, Harper. ST. AGNI was born in 2014 when the couple decided to start

their own project together having both previously worked in retail. Lara always had a clear vision on what she wanted to create, so she decided to just go for it. Each piece is carefully considered, designed in Byron and handcrafted in Indonesia. The couple has always had a strong relationship with the manufacturers and a focus on doing what they can to limit their carbon footprint. The business began out of their linen cupboard with a $10,000 limit credit card. First starting with footwear, then accessories, before introducing clothing to their ever-growing collection. ST. AGNI is named after Lara’s nona Agni, whom everyone that knows her considers a saint. Over the past five years, their team has grown from just the two of them to now 15 and are now stocked in around 100 stores globally including Net-APorter. In June, they opened their second bricks-and-mortar store in the Fortitude Valley’s affluent precinct of James Street. The Brisbane flagship boutique was fitted out by interior design studio We Are Triibe who captured the brand’s earthy, relaxed and minimalistic style thoughtfully with furnishings by local creatives including Olivia Bossy and Coe Studio. You can find their full collection of apparel, footwear and accessories, including a curated range of jewellery by local creatives in store. @STAGNISTUDIO 23 JAMES STREET, FORTITUDE VALLEY ST-AGNI.COM

unfiltered: contraception Brisbane women share their stories about the good, the complicated and everything in between.
MS APPREHENSIVE I HAVE BEEN ON THE SAME CONTRACEPTIVE PILL FOR 12 YEARS AND I’M TERRIFIED OF CHANGING.”
I
was 15 when I started on the contraceptive pill, Levlen. And 12 years later, I have never changed. To be honest, I’m terrified of going off the pill. I rarely experience symptoms of PMS, I don’t get cramps, my skin is relatively clear, and I sit in this naivety and find comfort in it, because I’m scared of how my body will react if I was to do anything differently. Will my skin breakout? Will my periods change? Who knows! However, I do know that the pill isn’t safe to use indefinitely and could be affecting my health in ways I may never have attributed to my contraception. Or worse, masking other issues that I’m not even aware of yet. And with all the hype in the media about negative sideeffects of the pill, I’d be lying if I said that doesn’t scare me.

t the age of 21 I experienced adverse side effects to a certain contraceptive pill, which resulted in swapping to a more expensive brand. We’re talking $75 kind of expensive. My partner and I had only been dating for a few months when it came up in conversation. Mid-rant, my boyfriend stopped me and asked, “Do you want

was diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) back in 2014. It took about 2 specialists and 8 doctors to finally get a diagnosis. In the end, we discovered that the pill (which I had been on since I was 16) was masking all my symptoms because it was giving my body a regular dose of progesterone every month. The doctor’s response to my diagnosis was to stay on the pill until I was ready to fall pregnant, but I knew I didn’t want a band-aid reaction and wanted to treat my symptoms naturally. A Fertility Naturopath completely changed my world by introducing me to the Basal Body Temperature contraceptive method – a natural method where I track my menstrual cycle with a calendar and body temperature. It’s definitely not a fail-safe, but my husband and I have been together for over six years and we’re financially stable, so if we were to fall pregnant, it would be a blessing we would happily welcome.

round eight years ago I went on the pill to regulate my periods. I could have 3-4 months gaps between cycles and then my periods could last up to 3-4 weeks at a time. The pill worked by regulating my hormone imbalances, which worked well for me at the time… until a few years later I was diagnosed with PCOS and everything finally made sense. to split it?”. I have to admit, I was a little stunned. I’d never heard of people splitting the cost of their contraception. At first, I was a little embarrassed by the fact that I couldn’t afford it on my own, but at the same time felt oddly proud that it was his suggestion. He said, “A kid would be a joint decision, so the responsibility should be shared as well.” “Over two years later and the pill is now just another expense we share, right next to rent and groceries.”
YEARS OF TERRIBLE PERIODS MADE ME SCEPTICAL OF CONTRACEPTION.”
to take the pill (I’d forget for days at a time) and then two years ago a friend told me about the Implanon bar. I was a little sceptical as I heard a few girls who had terrible experiences. It took me an entire year to pluck up the courage to get it and luckily for me, it’s been the best thing ever.
MY SEARCH CONTINUES FOR ‘THE ONE’…”
’ve dealt with bouts of nausea throughout my six years on contraceptive pills, getting hit with that sick feeling every time I switch to a new pill. Having gone through at least six different pills to date, I still haven’t settled. Testing and trying various strengths and ingredients, each pill has either not had the desired effect or has uncomfortably changed my hormones. I have wanted different results over time, first seeking out the lowest possible dosage, then trying to clear my skin with stronger formulas, followed by wanting to fully skip my period. Now I find myself back at the beginning, wanting to go back to square one.

Natural THERAPY In the theme of our Body & Soul issue, we get advice from a Brisbane naturopath about how to be your healthiest self whilst living your best life. Expert Sarah Henschel from Natology gives us easy health tips, tells us about the importance of getting to the root cause of our symptoms and how to prevent illness and disease.
S
o, what actually is naturopathy? Naturopathy is an alternative therapy that is used to uncover the underlying cause of a health concern, instead of just treating the symptoms. It’s used to support the body’s natural ability to heal using dietary therapy, herbal medicine and nutritional medicine, as well as through diet modification and lifestyle changes.
S ARAH ’ S RE C O M ME NDAT I ONS FO R: Sleep: Magnesium and Gammabutyric acid to go to sleep and stay asleep, meditation. Anxiety: Magnesium, Withania and Oats Green are great, see a psychologist regularly. Stress: B vitamins, Siberian Ginseng and Rhodiola, say no to things and prioritising tasks. Insomnia: Californian poppy and Nervine herbs to calm the mind, a couple of drops of lavender essential oil on the pillow at night for its calming effect Low energy/mood: Siberian Ginseng and Rhodiola, meditation, decluttering your calendar, make recovery and sleep a priority. 28

SAR AH ’S P I CKS: Drink of choice? Plain fresh water. Coffee order? Almond milk flat white. Go-to workout? A gym class, walks and bike rides in nature. Gym bag essentials? Alo yoga pants are my favorite. NATOLOGY, TENERIFFE What kind of treatments do you most commonly use? What do you specialise in? I mainly use a combination of herbal medicines and nutritional medicine to achieve the best outcome. I specialize in hormonal conditions, skin issues and gut health. However, I do treat a variety of other conditions such as immune-related problems, exhaustion and mood disorders. What are your client’s most common concerns? I would say stress, exhaustion and gastric concerns are really big concerns. Other conditions I come across almost daily would be sleep and thyroid issues. In what cases should people see a naturopath instead of a doctor? Health concerns such as fatigue, sleeplessness and gut issues are often the kind of things I see in my clinic. However, it is very important for patients to clear up any acute medical concerns with their GP first. A Naturopath’s role is to support the patient to achieve optimal health again through prevention or health management alongside their primary health care practitioner. General expert tip you can recommend for everyone? Prevention is better than cure. Buy good quality food. Don’t compromise your sleep. Your gut is your second brain. STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

Five minutes with Sharni Dean from The Derm Lab.
How did you begin in the skincare industry? About 12 years ago, I began my journey as a sales rep for a pharmaceutical company looking after a diabetes portfolio. An opportunity presented with a small aesthetic company in Melbourne which I accepted selling cosmetic devices to nurses, doctors and surgeons. What drew you to it? I have always had a passion for helping people to look and feel their best on the inside and out. There are so many people who struggle with negative body image and I wanted to change that.
Tell us about The Derm Lab treatments... We specialise in treatments from medical grade facial and peels, skin treatments such as microdermabrasion, skin needling and the V-Plasma Facial (Platelet Rich Plasma), injectables for facial sculpting and treatments for body contouring. Most people wouldn’t know... That we also have a clinic in Melbourne that has been in business for nearly two years. What is the EMSCULPT? We are very excited to be able to offer it in our Brisbane clinic very soon. EMSCULPT is a game changer and non-invasive as clients can now build muscle at the same time as burn fat
You Beauty
Getting ready for a night out can feel like a painstaking process. But with a little self-care and pampering at Brooklyn Beauty Bar (BBB), you can arrive in love with your look from your hair to your toes. Journalist Fiona Williams visits contemporary beauty space, Brooklyn Beauty Bar, for the first time. FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Rich mahogany leather couches catch my eye before I even enter the doors of BBB on James Street. With crystal glasses filled with sparkling water and delicate slices of citrus resting on luxe gold plates, next to me sits a carefully curated cocktail menu. Is it ever too early for sloe gin? Jazzy and low-fi hip hop beats sound in the background - there’s no Enya or incense at this urban escape. JULY 2019

This treatment will not replace plastic surgery, but is a fantastic alternative being non-invasive with no downtime. THE DERM LAB 172 GYMPIE ROAD, KEDRON P 3857 4843 THEDERMLAB.COM.AU
MANI, MANE ATTENTION AND MIXED DRINKS
I’m introduced to BBB’s exclusive ProMani, a delicate and nurturing manicure encouraging healthy nail growth and long-lasting colour. A dark splash of winter red is applied with drops of cherry oil to calm the cuticles and a pomegranate sugar scrub for my hands and feet. Next, a quick wash and blow dry with my mane tousled into loose waves that will no doubt last well into my working week. There’s a choice of just eyes or a full face of makeup depending on your look and I choose notes of bronze and rose gold to be applied while I sip on the Brooklyn Lady cocktail. THE VERDICT
Bottoms up! From nails to brows, waxing to tanning and cut and colour, BBB is a complete bespoke beauty service. Stocking an impressive gin and top shelf champagne menu, it’s the place to begin before your next night out. Not an overnight fix
Skin cancer is endemic in Australia, with Queensland scoring the throne in having the world’s highest rate of skin cancer. The combination of harsh ultraviolet exposure and our love for the great outdoors mean that, as plastic surgeons, we see a lot of patients who need surgery for skin cancer, especially when it involves the face. Surgery will often require removal of the cancer lesion and subsequent repair of the “hole” that’s left after the cancer is removed. This may sometimes involve techniques such as skin flaps and grafts. Our priority first and foremost is to ensure complete removal of the cancer; however, and just as importantly, we must aim to get the resultant scar and appearance to be as aesthetic as possible. Skin cancer is preventable. Sunshine can and should be enjoyed in moderation but remember to cover up and apply sunscreen - always. Sadly, a snap shot of any popular beach on a weekend revealing an abundance of baking bodies proves that the sun protection message still has not hit home.
Sleep is critical for wellbeing. Inadequate sleep is linked to heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, anxiety, and depression. It impacts memory, concentration, driving, and work. Going to bed and rising at regular times every day is imperative. This strengthens the circadian rhythm. Reinforce a sleep schedule with natural light during the day and a dark room for night. Caffeine, alcohol, spicy foods and nicotine interrupt sleep. After 30 minutes of not being able to sleep, get out of bed, do something boring, then go back to bed. Do not have digital screens in the bedroom. A poor mattress or pillow can result in discomfort. Temperature is important with a cooler room being more helpful. Stress is the enemy of quality sleep. Writing notes and plans for the next day clears the mind. Best wishes for 8 hours of sleep to wake well-rested, have enough energy for the day, and don’t need aides to sleep or stay alert… avoid nanna naps!
You don’t go to the gym once and expect to see results instantly, so why should it be different when looking at your image and self-reflection goals? This is your journey, and that is exactly what we take you on at The Derm Lab. Whilst we can fine tune your lips in one appointment, on occasion this is not always the single best approach. The perfect outcome sometimes requires a series of treatments to guide you on your path towards highlighting your individual and unique features you have been blessed with. At The Derm Lab we set a standard that truly gets you. We design an individualised plan, directing what is right for you. We take the time to help you understand the early signs of ageing as well as assessing diet and nutrition, medications and exercise. We take a holistic approach and fine tune not only your appearance, but your well-being to define the true you.

Take care of yourself
Mouth breathing effects
Not just the girls!
Being in a relationship can be both fulfilling and inspiring, helping you to grow and understand each other better. But whilst you’re nurturing your relationship, remember that you need some personal self-care as well. Just as important as caring for your significant other, you need to adopt a self-care mindset and look after yourself the way you would with a loved one. Sometimes it can be difficult to do, but checking in on yourself reaps the rewards of better communication, understanding and empathy with yourself, as well as with your partner. Spend some time alone this week or re-engage with some old friends. Perhaps continue maintaining a hobby that you enjoy doing on your own or focus on some personal goals. Communicate with your partner and let them know when you need some time alone. Practising self-care will help you feel like yourself, which in turn will help make you more centred and grounded; a win for both you and your relationship!
A recent article in the New York Times Magazine stated that there is research now linking mouth breathing to a host of health issues, including sleep problems, learning disorders, tooth decay, bad breath and jaw deformities in children. We are meant to be nasal breathing, morning and night. This ensures that the air coming into our bodies is filtered, humidified and warmed. When we mouth breathe, our physiology, how our body works, is altered, and we become less healthy. James Street Dentists believe that dental practitioners are the gatekeepers to the airways and as part of their routine examinations, they screen every patient for possible breathing issues. There are countless people who are now breathing, sleeping, eating, learning and growing better, all because their dentist asked them the right questions and knew what signs to look for. Have you considered if you are a mouth breather?
One of the most common misconceptions about varicose veins is that they only affect women. But the truth is, veins don’t discriminate. According to international research they affect both genders equally. However, men with varicose veins often present for treatment much later and more severely than women. Leaving them at a greater risk of ulceration as well as permanent skin damage. It is often thought the reason for this is that men are not so concerned about the visual appearance of veins. In Brisbane where we have the climate to wear shorts year round, our clinic is increasingly seeing males seek treatment because their legs are on show. If the look of the veins doesn’t bother your man they may still suffer from symptoms such as heavy legs or discomfort at night, particularly if their line of work requires them to be on their feet for long periods or if they participate in high intensity sport or fitness.

Coffee Championship
The animal within
The humble AeroPress is not just an awesome brewing device, the AeroPress Championship held annually is fast becoming one of the worlds’ foremost advocates for specialty coffee competitions, aimed at growing the industry by connecting coffee communities worldwide and locally through participation and awareness. Beneficial partnerships are formed between baristas, roasteries, coffee farmers and the coffee community all coming together for the good of the cup. Wolff Coffee Roasters are again hosting the Queensland AeroPress Championship for the third year in a row. This year’s competition will be hosted on August 13 with competitor and spectator tickets available. Competitors will face off in rounds to prepare and serve their coffee beverage to a panel of judges. The best tasting coffee wins, with the first prize champion flown to the next level of contest at the National titles and that winner facing off against the world’s best in London on November 24.
I have been watching animal prints coming into menswear for the past 18 months. Initially I thought no way this trend would take, but I have found myself appreciating the rogue nature of the prints and their combinations. This is the modern version of the 80’s “clash’’ of colours and patterns. A leopard printed pant is not for the everyday man’s business attire, but it can be for after five. We are living in an era where showing personality and how you decide to stand out from the crowd is more important than ever. I often see people try the “louder is better” option, which is not always the best choice. Your outfit still has to work together, even chaos has order. This trend is really the ‘up yours’ to the rules and has a lot of attitude to boot. Follow the labels of SSS World Corp and Versace and tread carefully. For the best advice and a considered approach to this trend, work with us or your stylist.

JUST PAINT! at Bristle by Melissa Simmonds.
K
If one of your goals for 2019 was to practise mindfulness and another was to learn a skill, then Bristle by Melissa Simmonds could be for you. As Melissa explains, these down-to-earth workshops are more than a generic ‘paint by numbers’ style event, she will personally tailor to your needs and ability levels. “Bristle actually teaches people how to paint, you are going to learn techniques and take skills away – and have a good time too,” Melissa says. As if you needed another excuse to get the girls together (or perhaps a local fundraising event) for an evening of channeling your inner Picasso with a glass of Pinot Noir in hand, there’s been studies to show that it actually helps to relieve stress amongst other
wellness benefits. The best part? There’s no right or wrong when it comes to creating art. It’s totally up to interpretation and your imagination, which is what Melissa aims to achieve in creating a space that fosters creativity, with a helping hand. “It’s a harmonious space and environment for people to learn in and be creative, there’s no pressure. I want people to come and feel great, they’re there to enjoy it,” Melissa says. There’s a variety of classes available and you can find out more information by contacting Melissa via @bristle_melissasimmonds. PLASTIC SURGERY Looking after yourself and feeling better about yourself with Dr Matthew Peters. lastic surgery is often viewed as an extreme measure to improve oneself, and this is reinforced regularly in the mainstream media resulting in many people unaware of the more refined and subtle procedures that are commonly performed. As a result, it can be a surprise to learn from one’s general practitioner that a ‘small’ skin or body concern necessitates a referral to a Specialist Plastic Surgeon. The origin of our specialty’s name derives from the Greek word, ‘Plastikos’, meaning ‘to mould’. This is in essence what we do – we mould anatomical structures to achieve a desired form and function. Although quite 44

technical in application, the central tenant of ‘why’ we do this extends much further, eloquently stated by the pioneer of plastic surgery, Gaspare Tagliocozzi, in 1597 as, “We restore, rebuild, and make whole those parts which nature hath given, but which fortune has taken away. Not so much that it may delight the eye, but that it might buoy up the spirit, and help the mind of the afflicted”. It is this quote that my Plastic Surgery colleagues and I hold as the basis of our craft. It is considered when managing the middleaged man with a skin cancer on his nose, the woman in her thirties wishing to restore her breast shape after children, the patient with loose abdominal and extremity skin after massive weight loss, the child with prominent ears that is being teased at school, the female STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

with large breasts considering a breast reduction due to neck pain and difficulty finding clothes that fit, and when working with someone who has suffered tissue loss through trauma or cancer. All are examples of situations that are often not desired or wished for by the patient themselves, and all carry physical and mental wellbeing concerns for the individual involved. When considering plastic surgery, it by no means has to be extreme. ‘Looking after yourself ’, and ‘feeling good about yourself ’, are daily catchphrases with a solid basis in physical and mental health. Plastic surgery, when utilised appropriately, can make a positive impact on both. VALLEY PLASTIC SURGERY 51 BALLOW ST, FORTITUDE VALLEY P 3488 8118 VALLEYPLASTICSURGERY.COM.AU

Smooth transitions at
St Margaret’s
Well known for their focus on academic excellence, and quality teaching and learning, St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School, in Ascot, ensures the transition into secondary school is a smooth and seamless one. Starting at a new school, or even moving from primary to secondary in the same school, can be an anxious time for young students. Ensuring a smooth transition into Year 7 is key to a great start to a child’s secondary education. Acting Principal Karen Gorrie says that St Margaret’s Year 7 Transition Program caters to both current and prospective Year 6 students. “The internal Transition Program allows our current Year 6 students to gain insight into aspects of secondary school life, prior to moving into Year 7. New Year 7 students attend both a Transition Day and
Welcome Day at the school, providing them with an opportunity to meet other students, their teachers and Head of Year, as well as learn more about the school,” Ms Gorrie explains. To further facilitate a smooth transition, St Margaret’s Year 7 students occupy a precinct that is uniquely their own, a space where most of their learning will take place, apart from subjects like Science, HPE and Art. “This dedicated area supports our Year 7 students’ academic, social and emotional wellbeing in a structured environment while they embark on their secondary education,” says Ms Gorrie. St Margaret’s will host an Open Morning
between 8am-11am on Thursday 15 August where visitors will have the chance to see the Year 7 precinct in action, while learning more about the school’s programs such as the successful academic advising model and Flyers Program for elite performers, as well as the many diverse extracurricular opportunities available. Register your interest for the Open Morning online via stmargarets.qld.edu.au/admissions/ open-morning-2019. New positions have also just opened up for Year 7 2020 enrolments.

my
ROOM We visited Brisbane Interior Designer, Anna Spiro, at her beautiful beach house at Point Lookout on Stradbroke Island where she spends her weekends to escape the city. Exploding with colour and quirky textiles, her bright living room is where she enjoys relaxing the most inside her island abode. What do you love so much about Straddie? I have been going to Straddie with my family since I was a little girl. It actually feels more like home to me than any other place. I love the simplicity of life there and the raw, natural beauty of the landscape. I do a lot of walking on the beach and swimming in the beautiful crystal clear ocean year-round. It’s my absolute favourite place to be. Why is this room your favourite room in your house? It’s the central hub of our little beach cottage and when I am there with my boys we all lounge around on the sofas together chatting etc. It’s a bright and happy room and it’s very comfortable, laid-back and relaxing. What inspiration went into the styling in this room? I wanted the room to feel relaxed and colourful, layered, interesting and fun. It was really just a collection of a lot of pieces I already had. The sofa, which is covered in one of my own Anna Spiro Textiles fabrics, is one of my favourite things in the room and it is the piece that joins the dots with

all the crazy colours in the art, cushions, upholstery, etc. What are your plans for the house renovation? I plan to extend the house by building it in underneath to include another bedroom, bathroom, lounge room and laundry. I will also renovate the bathroom upstairs as well as a few other cosmetic changes. What are some special pieces in the room that you love? I really love the Anna Spiro Textiles Oahu upholstered sofa, the Miranda Skoczek painting behind the old French drapers table is a favourite. I also love the Japanese large blue and white bowl on my coffee table. I found it in Melbourne when I was sourcing interesting furniture for a project and carried it home in my hand luggage on the plane. How do you think your style reflects your personality? I think I am a bit crazy so maybe my bright and colourful, mismatched style reflects that!

It ain’t called Palm Springs for nothing! The city filled with palm trees everywhere you look in the Sonoran Desert is only a couple hours drive from LA.
