Heck, it’s a career for most of us here at Style HQ... As you know, we are big fans of [generally] shopping local, and this issue is chockers full of Australian and local brands. Yes, we do throw in the occasional international brand that we love, ‘cause we want to share newly discovered brands that inspire us. This month we also feature Opa Bar + Mezze on our cover – it’s a sensational new restaurant, overlooking the Brisbane River. Our photoshoot earlier this month was a breeze – it was the perfect combination of model, fashion, and location, and we love the images captured by our photographer Corrina. Anyway, I’d love to stay and chat but I’ve just noticed a pair of Lu Goldie sunnies on page 33...

Nehme Ghanem Known for a sophisticated suite of Brisbane’s most popular restaurants such as Blackbird Bar & Grill, Donna Chang, Bisou Bisou, and most recently, Iris Rooftop, meet the managing director behind Ghanem Group.

M

y brother Adonis and I are blessed that travelling across the world has allowed us to become the restaurateurs we are today. Every sojourn in Europe, The Middle East, Asia, and America have all inspired our unique businesses within Ghanem Group. Whenever I found myself caught up in a foreign city, I would research the food and nightlife scene. Through this, we have brought pockets from all over the world to Brisbane via Byblos, Blackbird Bar & Grill, Donna Chang, Boom Boom Room, Lord of the Wings, Le Bon Ton, and Iris Rooftop. I love our city’s weather and proximity to the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. I love that internationally Brisbane is still in its infancy but is rapidly emerging as a world class city. Being part of Brisbane’s cultural development excites me. Hospitality has been in my family’s blood since my father opened his first cafe 45 years ago after he arrived in Australia. I’ve worked for my family’s business since I was 14 years old,

and we are extremely fortunate to have a strong family ethos. Throughout the years it has always prevailed, and it is a testament to the hard work and passion we put into it every day. Aside from learning from my parents in their cafes when I was growing up in Annerley on the southside, I attended St Laurence’s College and then Bond University on the Gold Coast. Since then, each new venue we have opened is a career highlight as we continually strive for it to be better than the last. In 2019, Blackbird Bar & Grill took out Best Restaurant in Queensland in The Restaurant & Catering Awards which was such an honour to win for our team. In my opinion, Brisbane’s hospitality scene is certainly on par with Sydney and Melbourne, which makes Brisbane a worldclass destination. The most important career advice I’ve learned is to never get complacent with your business. When COVID hit it was exceedingly difficult to turn our businesses off. I use the analogy, ‘it’s like pressing the emergency brakes on a freight STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

train at full speed’ – it doesn’t magically stop, it takes miles for the train to slow down. When the country went into lockdown, our businesses shut down and we stopped receiving revenue from day one, but it took up to two weeks to completely stop our expenses. Turning everything back on again bit by bit was a learning experience as you look at some of the waste that crept in over the years and you think, “how did we let that happen?”. I’m looking forward to the day I can step back and look at the finished product of our latest addition to the group, Iris Rooftop, with a smile because we have achieved what we set out to achieve: creating a world class, boutique bar and restaurant with food, drink, and ambience to rival the amazing view. Unfortunately, it is taking a little longer than I would like to get there. When we’re not working, my three brothers, sister, and I are all busy bringing the next Ghanem generation into the world. Between the five of us, we have 11 children, nine of which are under three years old!

To know our own designs and styling can literally change how a person is feeling and impact their life keeps me wanting to always lift the bar on what we offer. We ensure all timber is sourced from sustainable plantations, any items with feathers are purchased from certified farms, and we say no to some pieces we love, but we stick to our ethics when it comes to the environment, which gives both us and our customers peace of mind. What do you think makes a house a home? The personal touches. The pieces or styles we fall in love with when we first see them. What spaces do you work with other than homes? POT OF GOLD Why this Byron Bay agency is getting global recognition. By FIONA WILLIAMS

T

outed by Forbes as ‘what fashion needs right now’, this humble brand development agency, founded by Bianca Gregg and Arlen Macpherson, is pioneering its way through digital buying with its salubrious platform. Introducing, Del Rainbow. We sat down (virtually) with Bianca in her light and airy Byron Bay office to learn more about what going ‘Phygtical’ means. Hi Bianca! Thanks for chatting with us, how’s your day going? It’s 3:30pm on a Monday afternoon and I’m gearing up for a huge afternoon and evening ahead of appointments for our Resort ‘21 season. We work early mornings and late nights to hit all our time zones (from Australia, the US, Asia, Europe, and the UK) to connect with our clients and retail partners worldwide. Could you describe Del Rainbow in one sentence? Del Rainbow is joyful, passionate, intuitive, excellence, intentional, abundant, considered, and innovative. Where did the name come from? Del means ‘of the’ and the rainbow is my universe sign, I always ask for a rainbow to confirm I am on the right path, and they bring everyone (including myself) copious amounts of joy! I wanted Del Rainbow to be a company that embodies the experience of a rainbow, the feeling of joy, alignment, vibrancy, and wonder. What inspired you to create your business with your co-founder (and partner) Arlen Macpherson? Our partnership was a very organic one, as naturally, we balance one another out. We both have unique and niche skill sets that when operating together in unison, form the basis of Del Rainbow. It is incredibly special to be able to pour your love into something alongside the person that you love. As you are building both the company and life

Our natural environment aside, Byron is also home to some of the most creative and inspiring humans I’ve ever crossed paths with.

FRANK ABOUT FASHION Some would say that 2020 was a write-off when it comes to business. But instead of following the masses, Julia McCarthy forged onwards and fearlessly made a foray into apparel. Her label, Friends With Frank, is all about made-to-measure tailoring, local craftsmanship, and slow-motion fashion. Here, she chats with Courtney Frank.

Hi Julia! Thanks for chatting with us. How are you? I’m well – considering! We’ve just gone through lockdown 4.0 in Melbourne, so although it’s been yet another shift for us as a small business, we’re kind of used to it now. I’ve also got a fourmonth-old daughter that is keeping us busy and brightening up our days. What does it mean to be a slow-fashion label in 2021? For us, being a slow fashion label starts with our design philosophy of creating timeless wardrobe staples. Testament to this is the fact that lots of our styles have not only been in our range for years but have maintained their popularity. It also means slower production – smaller runs, fewer styles, and less frequent collection launches than a traditional, jam-packed fashion calendar. We truly believe less is more, and in quality over quantity. Creating garments that will stand the test 24

|

of time – through combining premium materials, quality craftsmanship and timeless design – is how we live a ‘slow fashion’ life. How would you describe your own personal style? And how does that translate into FWF? I love classic pieces. Nothing too trendy. Time and time again, I find myself on the hunt for the perfect classic pieces in the wardrobe, styles so obvious you would think they’d be everywhere, but in fact proved hard to find. What I aim to do with FWF is design everything I want/need in my own wardrobe. So, you can probably say that FWF is my own personal style! Some of your product is handcrafted by a local family-owned manufacturer in Melbourne. Tell us about that process: Both our Classic Trousers and Classic Trench are proudly designed and manufactured here in Melbourne. Our local team of makers work STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

@STYLEMAGAZINES

FASHION

“BEING A SLOW FASHION LABEL STARTS WITH OUR DESIGN PHILOSOPHY OF CREATING TIMELESS WARDROBE STAPLES. ”

collaboratively throughout the entire production process, each with their own area of expertise. From patternmaking, to cutting the fabric, and then sewing – the making of these pieces works as a production line of sorts, with everyone playing their individual part. Many of our makers have been in the industry for years and take a lot of pride in their craftsmanship. We feel so lucky to have found such amazing local talent to work with! It’s been such a rewarding experience to be so hands-on in bringing these pieces to life, from start to finish.

If you could take one piece of advice from the last year, and pass it on to another business owner, what would that be? The extreme impacts of COVID, both on a personal and business level, really illustrated how much circumstances can be beyond your control (nothing like a snap lockdown in Melbourne five days before our SS21 Sydney photoshoot to remind us of this!). However, the flipside is there are always things in your control, and there is a huge amount of power and opportunity when you focus on those things with a positive attitude.

When it comes to falling in love with new fashion, we’re often enchanted by the feel of a garment before even trying it on. Being tactile and textural by nature, it’s no surprise that the way clothes feel is connected to how we also feel, with the ability to alter our moods and uplift our spirits.

T

here’s something about putting on a beautifully tailored blazer or elegant cigarette pant that instantly gives you purpose. A walk of confidence. An aura of poise and power. This is the intention behind every SABA garment. Once considered primarily a workwear brand, SABA has redefined the public’s perception, reinventing their collections to refined, versatile pieces that can easily take you from desk to dinner. This prestigious brand is one of Australia’s most recognisable, with their clean lines and confident cuts becoming synonymous with the SABA name for many years. Making for true investment pieces, their styles curate an effortlessly “modern wardrobe that inspires a sophisticated way of life,” as described by the head of womenswear design, Tanya Emon. Since its inception in 1965, SABA has effortlessly stayed in tune with the wants and needs of the modern woman. “We are shaped by the happenings, experiences, scenes, and nuances of daily life. SABA is there to add the inner strength that looking sharp provides,” says Tanya. Their Winter ‘21 collection, Momentum, is defined by tactile fabrics, strong hues, and streamlined shapes. Guided by principles of improvement and innovation, the collection looks and feels like everything you’d expect from SABA – stunning fabrics, meticulous construction, and a timeless sensibility. Speaking to Tanya, she details how the collection was inspired by the 1967 French film, Belle De Jour, and its lead actress, Catherine Deneuve. Epitomising the fashionable woman of the 60s, Deneuve fast became the muse of this collection with her sense of “cool elegance that suggests far more fire than it reveals,” as Tanya describes. Known for iconic outerwear, luxurious knitwear, and superior tailoring, SABA is grounded in exceptional execution and is dedicated to quality that lasts a lifetime. Providing an elevated modern wardrobe that makes every woman feel their most powerful is the legacy that SABA is proud to uphold.

WHO IS LU GOLDIE? No longer just an accessory to shield your peepers from the sun, these days, your eyewear should be paired with an on-trend micro bag and a sunny disposition. This month, our intrigue was piqued as we chatted to the anonymous Byron Bay owner of Lu Goldie, known only as ‘B’. By COURTNEY FRANK

Hi B! Can you tell us how Lu Goldie started? Lu Goldie was started as a creative outlet, to create something that didn’t have rules. Whatever our current aesthetic is will not bind us for life, we’re open to going with the flow when something feels stale, or we just aren’t excited anymore. We just want a brand that feels light and fun and fresh always. What inspires the brand? The early 2000s is an endless source of fashion inspiration for us! Tell us about your decision to remain anonymous as the owner: We want our customers to be ‘the face’ of Lu Goldie, this story isn’t about the individuals behind the brand but the amazing people who truly make it what it is, our Lu girls! Your favourite thing about Aussie fashion? Australian fashion is really ahead of the curve. There is so much creativeness and so much talent coming out of Aus, we’ve got that forever summer thing going on (maybe not you Victoria), so maybe that’s it. Summer is traditionally the fun fashion season where you get to be a bit more colourful. Compared to living in places where there are actual seasons and the warmth might only last a few months, and you only get a small window for your ‘fun’ collection pieces.

Is there a piece of business advice you’ll always live by? Consistency is crucial, but don’t be afraid to change direction if something doesn’t feel right or ring true to you. And on that note, what does a typical day look like for you? At the moment, wake up around 7.30-8am, have a cup of tea and brekky and do 20 minutes of study/language learning. Then walk to the office, work, have a good lunch, work some more. Then walk the dogs (they come to the office of course) to the river or a cafe. Go home and do a bit more language study and have a yummy dinner. Let’s see how long I can stick to it! Why is it so important to buy from ‘slow’ brands? I understand the temptation to buy fast fashion – it’s cheap, it’s on trend, you can have a lot for a little. But if you’re not paying for it, then someone else certainly is. There are people behind every garment and product you buy, and with your money, you decide how those people will live. On the environmental side of things, fast fashion is a disaster. Build your ultimate outfit to pair with Lu Goldie: Colour-blocking with contrasting colours – a green top and pants with a pink cardigan, or a blue skirt and blazer with a yellow top – all of the colour! The Aussie brand taking the world by storm! By OLIVIA ASHWORTH

I

nspired by the idea of creating tops to go ‘with jeans’, Gold Coast fashion label, With Jéan, has quickly become a brand synonymous with Aussie it-girls. Trailblazing their way through the fashion scene, with signature styles worn and adorned internationally, Sami Lorking-Tanner and Evangeline Titilas are the two twenty-something girls behind it all. How did you both meet? We met through a mutual friend ten years ago and have been best friends ever since! What motivated you to start your own brand? It was always our dream to start something together. I guess we were just intrinsically motivated to create something!

In terms of sustainability, how does With Jéan compare to other Aussie fashion brands? All of our pieces are ethically produced and manufactured in China. From the conception of With Jéan, we built the necessary practices into our business model to ensure we were always in support of ethical labour. We don’t mass produce in questionable factories with unknown, never-ending supply chains and aggressive deadlines. We have an incredibly large team of artisan sewers and creators, working in family-owned businesses in safe, happy, and comfortable environments. We also currently package everything in biodegradable packaging and are working towards incorporating more natural fibres. Sustainability is a huge focus of ours moving forward, especially as we continue to learn and grow.

Since 2017, how has the style of With Jéan changed? Our collections are always evolving with our own personal style. We carry on with silhouettes that become synonymous to our brand, but we also love to include new shapes, materials, and designs in each collection. Every design is something we both love and want to wear!

What fashion trends are you currently loving? Mesh and placement prints, which are definitely an area of focus in our new collection. Your new collection, how would you describe it? It’s our most favourite collection yet and our first ever artist collaboration! It’s a wonderful mix of our own personal style right now and of course features artwork by the incredible Lord Newry. What’s next for With Jéan? We have a lot in store! We’re going to continue to focus on our international expansion, new categories and maybe even some more collaborations!

SPILL THE TEA! Where do you get your inspiration from? Anything vintage!

Wardrobe MVP? Our vintage Levi’s and/or our Andy Dress.

Best fashion tip? Wear what makes you feel good.

Being the first of its kind in Australia, atama is a unique boutique hair salon waiting for you to discover the popular Japanese beauty technique that promises luscious hair and serene self-care. Through nourishment and treatment of the scalp, hair, and skin, atama owner, Gabriel, believes it’s the most important part of a salon visit. One peruse over her gallery of client’s luscious locks on her website or Instagram, and you’ll see why this technique boasts incredible results inside and out. Only using natural, organic, and crueltyfree products, atama uses OWAY for hair and PHYT’S for skin. They’re also a part of the sustainable salons network, repurposing waste

and diverting it from landfill. Their goal is to make salon waste a thing of the past and they’ve already taken the steps towards this by achieving green accreditation from the Australian Hairdressing Council. Each fortnight their salon waste is collected and sold for repurposing with all proceeds donated to charity. Now that’s calming! Choose from a delightful head spa menu with facials, massage, and hot stone elements, or perhaps a salon appointment ranging from cuts, colours, foils, and styling. classic baked cheesecake Serves 8 – 10 You’ll need: 750g full-fat cream cheese, softened 400g sour cream 125g caster sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract ¹∕² tsp ground cinnamon Finely grated zest of 1 lemon 3 eggs, lightly beaten For the biscuit base 250g Granita or other plain semi-sweet biscuits 1 tbsp caster sugar Pinch of sea salt ¹∕² tsp ground cinnamon 125g unsalted butter, melted and cooled

Method Preheat the oven to 170°C. To make the base, place the biscuits, sugar, salt, and cinnamon in a food processor and blitz until you have a fine crumb. Tip the mixture into a bowl and pour over the melted butter. Mix to combine. Press the mixture evenly into the base of a 26cm round cake tin (not springform) and bake for 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and place in a deep baking tray. Meanwhile, mix together the cream cheese, sour cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and lemon zest until very well combined. You can use a stand mixer fitted with a whisk attachment for ease. Gently mix in the egg until just combined. Pour the cheesecake mixture over the biscuit base, then fill the baking tray with enough boiling water to come halfway up the side of the cake tin.

Carefully place in the oven and bake for 35–40 minutes until just set. The centre will still be wobbly, but will firm up as it cools. If you want, you can continue to cook the cheesecake a little longer, until it really puffs up and colours – this will give you an entirely different cake, more like the style of cheesecake you’d find in Spain. It will be less creamy and have more texture. Allow the cheesecake to cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least four hours. When ready to serve, run a sharp knife around the edge of the tin and invert the cheesecake onto a flat board or plate, then flip back onto a serving plate or cake stand. To help release the cheesecake, I usually sit the tin in hot water for 30 seconds, or warm with a kitchen blowtorch or carefully over a gas stovetop. This will melt the butter in the base ever so slightly. Top with your choice of fruit.

Marrying into the family business, Angelo says he has worked with his wife for almost 20 years. “We all get along really well, we truly are very fortunate people in business and every day is a joy to be around our team,” he says. While the rest of the city is sleeping, Angelo and Nick are up at 4am with local farmers and producers meticulously hand-picking each vegetable, fruit, flower, and gourmet bread so you don’t have to, making sure you’re getting the very best quality. “Because we pride ourselves on the best service and best quality produce, we make sure our customers are happy over and over again,” he says. We are big believers of supporting local,” says Angelo. Walking into the store is certainly an experience. With floor to ceiling wall produce (even hanging from the ceiling), it’s a colourful and inviting space for local fresh food lovers. Can’t make it in-store? Angelo, Nick, and the team have a popular home delivery service for locals. “A lot of people can’t get to the store. DIRECTOR’S CUT Founder of EdwardsAndCo, Jaye Edwards, ruminates on his most elevated space yet and his very own hand-picked haircare collection. By COURTNEY FRANK

Thanks for chatting with us, Jaye. Could you ever have imagined the cult-following that EdwardsAndCo would amass? Never!! My original goal was to open a beautiful salon that my friends could happily work in every day. Social media has played a huge role in the growth of EdwardsAndCo, I think the images capture the entire salon experience, from consultation, cuts, colour, and styling. We ensure every look is tailored perfectly to our client’s skin tone, bone structure, and personal style, ensuring they look incredible. Your James Street salon is a piece of art. What can potential clients expect on their first visit? EdwardsAndCo Fortitude Valley is the ultimate expression of the aesthetic we have built over eight years. Designed by Amanda Jarvis, the 350-squaremetre space is one of our largest salons yet. It reflects the casual luxury of The Calile Hotel opposite with terrazzo floors, enormous concrete, timber walls, and beautiful circular mirrors. The loft area adds to the sense of space, with Brian Connolly’s sprawling artwork bringing that signature EdwardsAndCo vibe. In terms of services, we offer a mix of future proof hair, extensions, and barbering services. Can you share some of your ‘pinch me’ moments? I think opening the Fortitude Valley salon during peak COVID would be it! It’s my most elevated space so far and I couldn’t be prouder of the team who helped me achieve it.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY SIMON FITZPATRICK

What is one haircare myth that you’d want to debunk? That there is a cookie cutter approach to hair. So many of my clients have been told there is only one cut that suits their face shape, or a particular flat colour they need to complement their skin tone. There’s a whole world of possibility out there, you just need a stylist who is willing to get creative. Earlier this year, you launched your namesake brand, Jaye Haircare. How did this come about? Developing my own range of products seemed like the natural next step in sharing the signature EdwardsAndCo look with as many people as possible. The collection of products (much like my salon philosophy) combines an essential balance of science and nature, utilising luxurious botanicals, and pure essential oils. Each ingredient has been hand selected by me to ensure products are of the highest possible standard, while respecting the individual and delicate nature of hair. I have recently launched my third styling product in the range and launched with Australian beauty retail giant, Mecca. That is definitely another pinch me moment! JULY 2021

THIS OR THAT: Big and bouncy or straight and sleek? Big and bouncy for sure.

Curtain bangs or blunt cut? Loving feathered curtain bangs at the moment.

Claw clips or scrunchies? I’m not huge on hair accessories, but right now I’m into claw clips.

Balayage or baby lights? Balayage every time.

THE SKIN RESE T Can’t find the product you’re after? Make it yourself. That’s what kiwi Emma Lewisham did when she launched her namesake brand in 2019. And now, her range of sustainable, science-backed beauty products are rivalling major luxury brands all over the world. By COURTNEY FRANK

@STYLEMAGAZINES

My journey into the beauty industry started when… I learned a product I had been applying for a personal skin issue (hyperpigmentation) contained a known carcinogen. Further research into this product led me to uncover how unregulated the beauty industry is, despite credible research proving the impacts skincare can have on our health. I went looking to replace this product with a natural alternative that didn’t compromise scientific-backed results – only to find it didn’t exist. I was used to investing in highperforming, luxurious crèmes and serums that were scientifically validated. I went looking in skin clinics, and the leading beauty stores, asking for natural products with evidencebased results. I wanted the La Mer of natural skincare, but I found it didn’t exist. It also struck me how the beauty industry was contributing to many of the environmental issues we are facing today. The take-makedispose model was alarming to me, so, I decided to be the change I wanted to see in the beauty industry. I took on the challenge to redefine standards for the beauty industry and prove it was possible to produce natural skincare with scientific validated results, and to set a new sustainable standard at every step of the way. Many consumers, including myself, expect products that…are sold to us to be safe and free from any ingredients that are potentially hazardous or harmful to our health. What I’ve learnt about the regulations of the skincare industry has been a revelation to me. The primary responsibility of cosmetic regulation in New Zealand and Australia falls on importers and manufacturers. This is important for consumers to know, so they realise they need to take ownership for the products they buy and use, as there’s no governing body looking at what’s in their moisturiser or foundation. Emma Lewisham products are naturally derived and free from anything harmful or suspicious, but what really sets us apart is our scientific validation and results. Despite eliminating over 1,400 ingredients (we eliminate all ingredients deemed questionable) we haven’t compromised on

results. In fact, we outperform or rival traditional luxury cosmeceutical brands and benchmark our products against these to ensure we perform as well if not better. We believe that independent objective measurements speak the loudest. At the heart of this brand…is my personal values and me wanting to take ownership and understand how the decisions I made within Emma Lewisham would impact people and the planet. I want the planet, and every person who is involved in our supply chain, to be respected and thought of. I am a person who seeks understanding, I care, and to me, Emma Lewisham is so much more than just selling products. Our Supernatural 72-Hour Hydration Creme is scientifically proven to outperform traditional luxury brands… such as La Mer, Estée Lauder and Augustinus Bader in boosting fibroblast production, which promotes the production of collagen and elastin. It contains a next generation powerhouse Hyaluronic Acid (called Saccharide Isomerate), which delivers a proven moisture reservoir effect that replenishes and restores moisture for 72 hours, so skin is well hydrated and plump. It also has high-concentration collagen peptides which help to strengthen and condition the skin, to visibly improve its texture and suppleness. Collagen peptides work to repair damaged cells and signal the skin to produce collagen. Bottle by bottle we prove…that it’s possible to deliver luxurious, natural products that deliver results backed by science at no cost to the planet or people’s health. For us, sustainability isn’t just important, it’s at the heart of everything we do. We’re pioneering a 100% circular-designed beauty industry, and we’re hoping the practices we’re bringing to the market will one day be standard business practices upheld by beauty brands alike. BALINESE BEAUTY We discovered a luxurious facial treatment and a little slice of Bali tucked away in leafy Balmoral. By JASMINE ROLFE

H

ow do you know when a facial treatment was completely and utterly relaxing? When you nearly fall asleep during your appointment! This was my experience at the Balinese Beauty Lounge – a quaint and contemporary boutique tucked away in the leafy streets of Balmoral. Whether it was therapist Ellysha’s traditional Indonesian face and décolletage massage, the soothing elixir of essentials oils drifting through the boutique, or the gentle melody humming along in the background that had me drifting off, one thing is for sure – it was bliss. Like my own little slice of Bali right here in Brisbane. When you book with the Balinese Beauty Lounge, each treatment is tailored specifically to you. So, after a friendly consultation with Ellysha and a few compliments on my skin (thanks, Elly, I use SPF every day!), she advised me that their hydrating facial and traditional Balinese massage to increase blood circulation would be most suitable for my skin. And while hydration was definitely needed, what intrigued me was the state-of-the-art technology and advanced skin treatments that were available. From a thirstquenching, non-invasive HydraFacial, cleansing and clearing microdermabrasion, Diode (or LED laser) skin treatments to treat fine lines, redness and dark spots, and rejuvenating IPL for collagen-

stimulation – the modern technology available here is second-to-none. And I love that it perfectly complements the traditional Balinese massage techniques that have been passed down through generations to Ellysha. Tradition meets modern technology – love it! During my consultation I was also surprised to discover that the Balinese Beauty Lounge is yet another Brisbane venture from the well-known Venzin Group – founders of Paw Paw, Mons Thai Cafe, Sundays, and Melrose, to name a few. So, you know you’re in great hands here. While we may not be able to travel to Bali in the foreseeable future, this luxurious boutique will leave you feeling as though you’ve stepped off the balmy streets of Seminyak and into a blissful retreat of relaxation. Laughter is the best medicine

Stop before you shop

Of the dozens of character strengths, humour has been my number one signature strength for years. I have always enjoyed laughing and goodnatured teasing. Bringing smiles to other people has always been important to me. I take my professional roles seriously, yet seeing the light side of situations, and making jokes can be helpful, especially in trying times. Laughter draws people together and triggers healthy physical and emotional body changes. It strengthens your immune system, elevates mood, diminishes pain, and protects you from the damaging effects of anxiety and stress. Laughter enhances intake of oxygen-rich air, stimulates your heart, lungs, and muscles, and increases the feel-good neurotransmitters that are released in your brain. Watch comedies, have fun with friends, tell jokes, and remember that laughter really is the best medicine!

Before you book in for varicose vein treatment, here are some questions you should ask… • When will you review my treatment? It is important that your treating physician gets you back in to ensure that the treatment has been successful. As each person heals differently, we review patients at least four times in the year following their procedure. • Do you provide compression stockings? International best practice guidelines recommend that class two compression should be worn post-treatment. These garments are often confused with TED stockings or travel socks that can be purchased in pharmacies, however they do not provide the same level of firmness. Ensure that your stockings are the right class, style and are fitted correctly to get the best results. • Will you treat my spider veins? Varicose veins and spider veins do need to be treated separately. Patients are recommended to wait 6-12 months before looking at treating superficial veins to ensure that there is no recurrence of the larger veins. Always ask if the clinic treating you can offer you this complete service. THE LEG VEIN DOCTOR 465 MILTON RD, AUCHENFLOWER P 3720 9912 THELEGVEINDOCTOR.COM

Hair loss and hair thinning

As the cooler months set in, it’s time to treat yourself to a weekend getaway. Whether it’s a trip to the country, a visit to the snowfields, or relaxing at a beachside destination, you deserve only the very best when it comes to luggage. The Wil Valor weekender bag fits everything you need for that getaway or business trip and is made from Nappa Bovine leather out of Milan. It’s a bag to admire for its craftsmanship, features, and functionality – plus it’s a great gift as well. Unique to Australia, the weekender bags can be customised specially for you. Choose from a great selection of colours such as canary yellow, fuchsia, navy, red, British racing green, saddle brown, black, and many more. Then, choose your stitching colour, lining colour, leather pockets, and finally personalise it with your very own monogram. Now you’re ready to go on your weekend adventure.

Female hair loss and hair thinning is often known as ‘that taboo subject’. It happens for a variety of reasons (and it’s a lot more common than you might think) yet we don’t really hear about it. As a society, we are hiding from this topic and it’s devastating to mental health and confidence. We can all help to instigate change by talking about it, learning more, and breaking down the barriers of acceptance. I’m interested in the treatments in this space, which divide into two categories: medications or surgery. But it’s micrografting that has me excited, and the results are there to see. Regenera Activa uses new technology to increase hair density that starts as early as 30 days and can continue up to 12 months. The results on women all over the world shows why it’s fast becoming globally recognised. If this can kick start our conversation to help women suffering from hair thinning, then it’s well and truly done its job. The Writer My blog Taylu started in the summer of 2015. It’s weird to reflect on that summer, because now I see it as one of the most crucial periods of my life. But whilst I was living through the moments, I felt extremely lonely and experienced all these coming-of-age things like lust, my first summer fling, trying to create a network, and figuring out whether this fashion thing was for me. In early 2016, Taylu came to life in my suburban Ipswich home. For the first time ever, I allowed myself to be vulnerable – I wanted people to leave my blog feeling like they weren’t alone in this world. I took a break from doing the blog because my perspective had shifted. For a while Taylu was my baby, but now I wanted creatives to share their work and have this community that felt safe to explore our current reality. It took me two years to curate a space I felt proud of. My hope is for this community to be used as a space for self-expression, allowing ourselves to learn from others, and feel a sense of belonging.

and always had this weird self-belief, fuelled by my passion for fashion. I was able to ignore the rejection and just have fun – I felt fulfilled. Realistically, it was a very slow journey. It wasn’t until the end of 2019 that I signed with my current modelling agency and in the middle of 2020, things became consistent. I’m truly appreciative of the uncomfortable times. You have to risk it for the biscuit. To stay confident within this industry, I focus on my actions as a person and who I am at the core. Of course, there are times when I feel disappointed if I miss out on a job or opportunity, but at the end of the day, life is a lot easier if you focus on the things you can control.

The Podcaster When I first started recording the Taylu podcast, I wanted it to correlate with the topics on the blog. However, as my life changed dramatically, I used the podcast to hear the stories of those who inspire me. I’ve met so many amazing people who have such a positive outlook on life. Loosening up and not being as rigid on the result has enabled me to explore topics I would have never thought of. The biggest lesson I’ve learnt from the podcast is to never go into a conversation with a preconceived idea about a person’s life. The best thing you can really do is just listen and not put too much pressure on yourself to conduct the best interview known to mankind. When I let go and I’m truly present, that’s when I’ve had the best conversations.

drama teacher so much – she made me fall in love with acting by facilitating a space where we were able to explore what we were feeling inside, while feeling valued and not afraid to be our authentic selves.

The Reality Star

The Model

The Actor

I initially visited a lot of agencies and they all said a big fat no. Although the rejections were hard to swallow, I realised I didn’t need the validation of an agency to do something I was truly passionate about. My blog really helped me practice my skills as a model – I was collaborating with photographers and stylists,

Moving to Australia at the age of seven and feeling completely out of my depth as I was the only person of colour in my grade, I found myself leaning towards creative outlets to rid my anguish and thoughts of not belonging. Drama was a way of escaping for me. There’s something magical about living out someone else’s life. I loved my JULY 2021

My biggest takeaway from Love Island was that it’s alright to not be the loudest person in the room. I can now reflect on my experience and say I was true to myself. It took me some time to feel comfortable with my experience and the racism I experienced after coming off the show. I needed to give myself a moment to heal and allow my perspective on Australia to shift. I guess that’s part of growing up. I’m not against reality shows and I do think they are valuable in the entertainment space, however it’s so important to stress how mentally challenging it is in such a controlled and heightened environment. Regardless of what kind of show you’re on, it’s probably not going to be what you expected. But if you have a strong support system and resources available such as a psychologist, you can get through it.

ENGLISH HEATWAVE Life by the sea with Mitchell English. By ASTRID TAEMETS

M

ost mornings find Mitchell English waking up in the dark and throwing on a pair of board shorts before making the trek through Noosa’s National Park to Tea Tree Bay. There, along with a handful of other wave obsessives, he rides a few uncrowded rollers, ahead of a day spent painting and creating in his Noosaville studio. His paintings have been described as ‘surf art’ – depictions of idealised, coastal images that vary in size and subject matter. A series of beachscapes that transport you to idyllic days by the sea with the sun on your back, your feet in the sand, and the hypnotic sound of waves as they crash onto the shore. A true reflection of his life by the sea, the imagery in Mitch’s Heatwave series is enough to make you want to pack up your belongings and move to the coast to lead a simpler, more uncomplicated existence. 64

“I made a decision after school to never live more than walking distance from the beach. I’ve stuck to that, and it’s obviously been a major influence on my work. The fact that I can not only walk to the beach with my board under my arm but also to go there to draw and photograph things that interest and inspire me, has had an indelible impact on my practice,” he says. Through brushstrokes and layered paint in sun-washed shades of pinks, ivory, and seagrass, Mitch’s artworks set a scene – a hazy, hot summer’s day where the golden sun warms bodies perched along endless stretches of sand. Strangers with the same purpose – to spend a memorable summer by the sea. Without saying it, his beachscapes are unapologetically Australian, perfectly portraying our signature laidback lifestyle, and our yearning for space and freedom, and it’s perhaps this that makes him such a STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

success Down Under. “I think the viewer connects with what they see,” he says. “Once I had a client who jokingly said she’d like to be on that beach, and I told her that I could paint her into the piece.” Now, Mitch’s commissioned Heatwave pieces loosely feature the figures of those who buy his art. “It’s kind of become an extra that I offer clients. I’ve painted in couples, whole families and recently, I even painted in a dog, replete with his favourite red bandana. One client asked for his surfboard to be painted in. It’s like I’m telling my story in my painting, and my clients get to share their part of the story, too. And, in the end, these clients enjoy a deeply personalised commission, a portrait of sorts,” he says. MITCHELL ENGLISH STUDIO 4/4 PROJECT AVE, NOOSAVILLE P 0431 940 499 MITCHELLENGLISH.COM.AU

In an era of stocks and cryptocurrency, investing can be intimidating – but not with art. By ANGELICA SILVA Initially aiming for a career as an artist, Kerry sought formal art training from the University of Sydney’s art school, where her interests in art theory and the art market grew. After her postgraduate studies, Kerry worked in roles at museums and some of the industry’s leading investment galleries. In 2013, she jumped into the deep end by opening KAB Gallery. “My vision was to create a gallery that I believe lacked in the market – one that was female-led and approachable.” With interior styles constantly changing, Kerry says people should look for art that stands the test of time. “Take a moment to

consider how your artwork will be received in five, 10 or even 50 years?” With so many options on the art market, art investing can be daunting. Like all investments and markets, there is risk, and it rises and falls over time. But if you do your research, you can purchase confidently.” Kerry says just like hoarding your favourite band albums or filling up your jewellery box, collecting art is fun and tangible. “You can build a beautiful collection of artworks that reflect your style, taste and echo the story of your life.” KABGALLERY.COM

HOME

Two of Brisbane’s most fashionable homegrown talents, Daniella and Natalia of Verge Girl, invite us into their homes this month to show us the pieces they love and cherish. By FIONA WILLIAMS

Hi...what do you love about living in Brisbane? It would have to be the lifestyle; we love being close to some of Australia’s best beaches and we absolutely love the warm weather. We feel that Brisbane also has a slightly more community feel. Compared to some of the other Australian cities, we find the people of Brisbane so friendly, kind, and sanguine. Which rooms are your favourites? D: Mine would have to be my bedroom, that’s where I feel the calmest. There is nothing better than getting into bed after a long day! N: Mine is definitely my lounge, living, and kitchen area. With kids running around, this is where we spend most of our time. What inspiration went into styling your homes? We have similar styling and tastes, and we collect things that remind us of people and places we love. You could say we are both quite sentimental. We both throw everything we love into the mix and it somehow always turns out. We never really set our minds too much on one theme, it’s more a collection of things we love. Tell us about some special pieces you love? D: I have a couple of vases and ceramic bowls that my late grandmother gifted me, and I hold them very close to my heart. I also have a couple of antique pieces that are special because they will never be able to be replaced.

N: My favourite pieces start with a handmade ceramic vase my dad made when he was 14 at school and a lounge suite that was my late grandmothers – I cherish it dearly! Sustainability is a huge focus of ours moving forward, especially as we continue to learn and grow. What do you think makes a house a home? N: I think for us both, making a house a home is really down to making the space feel warm. From incense, candles, music, nice rugs, and cosy couches, it really makes the space a sanctuary from the outside world. You just got home after a busy day – what’s the first thing you do? Pour a wine and start to cook dinner - it just relaxes us while having a chat. Dream home location? D: We both currently live in our dream locations! Nat has just recently moved to a new house and I moved into mine about a year ago. Outside of Brisbane, my dream would be to have a holiday house at the beach such as Byron Bay or the Gold Coast. Nat’s dream house would be in the NSW hinterland or a country farmhouse. How do you think your home style reflects your personalities? With our love of vintage and colour! Next homewares purchase? N: I am getting some of my furniture reupholstered by Anna Spiro and refreshing some of my current furniture. D: A new marble dining table.

CRUSH

Rikki Day Linen threads, golden lines, and amaretto sours. @R I K K I DAYART R I K K I DAY.COM

The first thing you did this morning… It was high tide, so I jumped in the creek.

Drink of choice… Dirty chai on soy or an amaretto sour.

Wardrobe MVP… My St Agni black or white tees are basically at uniform status now.

One sentence to introduce yourself… A multi-passionate artist based on the Gold Coast exploring line, form, and tone through painting and ceramics.

Describe your style… My style is very lived in, casual, and timeless. My life sees me sway between the beach, the art studio, and time at home with my son and husband. So flow, movement, and a certain effortlessness are a priority.

One label to wear for the rest of your life…

PHOTOGRAPHY BY TANIKA BLAIR

Lee Mathews. She makes incredible garments that fit a woman’s body so considerately and I wouldn’t feel out of place at either a business meeting or the beach.

Interior must have… Good lighting and good art.

Signature scent… Ayu is definitely one of my go-to brands for scent. I flick between their scents depending on my mood.

Next bucket list holiday… A sailboat charter in The Whitsundays or a cosy snow trip to Queenstown.

Where do you seek inspiration? It comes mostly from moments and the things I’m noticing when I’m feeling grateful. If you read the descriptions of what most of my artworks are about, they generally are inspired by beautiful moments I don’t want to pass by unnoticed.

JULY 2021

Ayu Amber Blue Chamomile & Sandalwood Body Oil $60

Who is your style icon? Lara Worthington. She seems to always have an effortless masculinefeminine balance and I love that.

Can’t put down read… My favourite book of all time is Blueback by Tim Winton.

Best career advice you’ve ever received… Every overnight success has ten years behind the scenes learning and failing and learning again that people don’t see. You just need to give something a go and believe in yourself and no one can do that for you.
