EDITOR’S NOTE A CRAZY 21-YEAR RIDE
I
f someone had told us back in 2001 that we’d be in business for 21 years, I’d have thought ‘nah I don’t think so’. I like change too much and having a few things on the go. But essentially, that’s exactly what has happened. I’ve had the good fortune to love what I do for the past 21 years AND during that time, experience and implement a lot of change. As a family business, we’ve had our share of blood, sweat, and tears – two of my three kids have worked with us, we’ve employed over 300+ staff during that time (and given many their first job), we’ve created two new business units being our digital and creative agencies, and most recently, Paul and I have become grandparents to lil’ Archie. As anyone in business knows, it’s a lot to stay in the game. Covid was definitely our most challenging of times, but really, it’s been 21 years of fun and creativity more than anything. We’ve always believed that there is a solution to every problem, that everything always looks better in the morning, and a sense of humour is essential to thrive in business. So, all there is to do now is say thank you to everyone who got us here – every Styler, past and present, to our management team (thanks for helping us shape and bring our many visions to life – your wisdom and enthusiasm has been invaluable), to our clients and partnerships – it’s been a pleasure to work with you all. Thank you so much for your business. And thank you to the readers – we wouldn’t be here without you. And of course, congrats Paul on 21 years at the helm. As I write this, I’m in London visiting my daughter and we’ve been reminiscing about the crazy shenanigans and funny, funny people who have passed through the doors of Style. As she says, ‘it has been a bloody hoot’. Thanks for the ride everyone x

hen Scott Hutchinson’s greatgrandfather left England for Australian soil in 1912, he had a plan – to create a construction company that would build Brisbane from the ground up. And while he might not have foreseen the 108 years of incredible projects and worldclass architecture, that’s the Hutchinson Builders we know today. From the age of 10, Scott knew he was going to be a part of that legacy and now he sits at the helm of Australia’s largest privately owned construction company. But at its core, Hutchies is a family business, and it’s truly the people that fuel Scott’s drive. “The most rewarding part of my job is going out with Hutchies people to shows
or just to the pub,” he says. Take a single drive around town and you’ll be met with Hutchies’ iconic blue, black, and white logo around every corner, marking soon-to-be local establishments, which is something Scott has proudly grown accustomed to. “I don’t think about it because it’s been that way for about 25 years,” he says. “It was a strange feeling seeing it in Sydney and Melbourne though. We didn’t really plan for that to happen but fortunately it did.” The Hutchies portfolio is full of familiar faces and facades, including Howard Smith Wharves, Brisbane Powerhouse, Ada Lane, The Calile, Adina Hotel, The Triffid, and Brisbane Skytower to name only a few. But Scott’s personal favourite? “Fortitude Music Hall,” he says. “It’s my favourite JULY 2022
project and a career highlight.” Although Hutchinson Builders didn’t exactly build this city on rock and roll, Scott’s favourite part about living and working in Brisbane is The Valley, and he certainly knows his way around. “A good night should involve multiple venues,” Scott says. It’s one of the many things he’s learnt over the years, including the value of slow and steady. “Don’t expand too quickly – it’s a constant problem,” he says. “I don’t like goals, targets, and KPIs. They encourage you to overreach, which is every builder’s nightmare.” With the next generation of Hutchies climbing up the ladder, Scott says the key to good leadership is simple – “get good people around you. That’s all you really need to do.”

Imagine a place where emerging fashion hopefuls could be mentored and guided through business with the steadying hand of an agency who has done it all before. Imagine then, that you could watch your vision come to life as your brand is guided through the ever-changing fashion landscape. Now, all of that is possible and more – meet, The New Garde.

ew have worked across as many industries in the fashion world as Jodie Hilton, founder and director of The New Garde – a Brisbane full-service fashion agency built on a vision to help emerging and established designers to level up their business in the ever-changing and competitive fashion world. After working across the full gamut of categories, from publishing and branding to fashion design and production, it became increasingly clear to Jodie that whilst the fashion industry is loads of beautiful things, it also walks a delicate tightrope between being socially supportive and back breaking. And so, after rallying her contacts, The New Garde was born – a studio with a clear purpose: to represent a dynamic powerhouse of potent fashion possibilities. Since their inception in 2017, The New Garde has observed and subsequently tackled many 16

adversities in the fashion landscape. “Over the last five years we’ve had a huge focus on many things, some of which include popular media and the war on waste in fast fashion, software to facilitate brand development into production as well as digital pattern-making, an aggressive return to local manufacturing, a greater focus on adaptive and inclusive fashion, and an increased investment towards accessory brands and collaborations,” says Jodie. When an emerging designer approaches The New Garde, Jodie’s passion for offering allencompassing support for the rising rock stars of independent, local labels comes to the fore. “I spend a lot of time working through their initial hurdles and help them become aware of the barriers they may face. We determine the viability of the brand and share current landscape insights – is there a customer? How are we going to reach STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

them? Then, I unpack timelines, costings, and show them how to find their way forward,” Jodie says. When it comes down to the pointy end of working with The New Garde, Jodie isn’t afraid to let budding entrepreneurs know that there are three major concerns with a capital ‘C’: cash – how much will it all cost, creativity – how can you create something special but also manufacturable, and community – how can they build a loyal fan base? At the end of the day, fashion start-ups come and go, but with The New Garde in your corner, Jodie is determined for you to succeed. “Success of a creative brand is a combination of a few things. Marketing that will appeal to a real customer that genuinely needs the product, industry relationships you can count on and communicate with, and a great leader backed by a skilled team.”

NEW GARDE DESIGNERS... Sallyanne Astill of Astille Sallyanne Astill always had a desire to start a womenswear label – as far back as she can remember. But, like many things, life got in the way. That is until she completed her fashion degree and took a leap of faith – creating ‘Astille’ a namesake brand that is confident, individual, and modern. “I am very inspired by the way French women dress and the general attitude to mature women in France. They have an effortless way of dressing regardless of budget. To me, it appears innate – the ability to comprise a look, often an eclectic mix of brands and vintage teamed with a much-loved statement accessory. I try to reflect that way of thinking with my collections,” Sallyanne says. While her degree enabled her to understand the core principles of starting a fashion collection, she admits it’s impossible to be an expert in all areas. Enter: The New Garde. “[The New Garde] has allowed me to concentrate on my core competencies while outsourcing other areas of the business to experienced people,” she says. With a new collection releasing in August, just in time for Brisbane Fashion Festival, Astille is going from strength to strength, one tailored outfit at a time.
Sallyanne wears Astille Rodin’s Muse Boiler Suit $790, BRÉSAC Havanna Sunglasses $280, Nine West Saleema Boot $259.95, talent’s own jewellery.

Shikha Singh from Shikha After modifying existing fashion items to try and suit her figure, Shikha Singh decided to throw caution to the wind and create her own brand from the ground up. “After years of wondering why there was nothing out there to fit my figure and not feeling confident in what I wore, and after speaking to others with the same issue, I thought, hang on – I can do something about this,” Shikha says. “It was a lot of going to the drawing board and seeing what was practical. Peggy Leder of Juliette et Felicity Juliette et Felicity is one to watch this spring summer. Although her first collection is yet to be released, Peggy Leder knew that fashion design was her calling from a young age. “Some things you just know you were born to do, it feels visceral. I remember the first dress I designed as a teenager like it was yesterday. In an era of all things pastel, puff, and pleat, I sketched a tight-fitting little black dress! From that moment on, I knew I wanted to make beautiful clothes,” she says. Describing her emerging brand as empowering and high quality, it wasn’t until 2016 when Peggy decided to follow her
impulses and pursue a full-time career in fashion. When it comes to influence, Juliette et Felicity is all about juxtaposition and impact. “I love the process of marrying opposing ideas and blending them into one cohesive theme… sharp lines contrasted against soft fabrics; loose linen with intricate embellishments,” Peggy says. When it comes to her partnership with TNG, Peggy credits Jodie with helping her enter the fashion world with strong business foundations, eliminating all uncertainty moving into her launch at the end of the year. KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY They say never to mix business and pleasure, but what happens when it comes to family? From the way we live to what we wear, watch, buy, and even how we see – these businesses have shaped our lives in the Sunshine State for the better. By POLLYANNA GARDNER
Natalia, Daniella & Cale from VRG GRL Sisters in style and life, Natalia and Daniella of fast-fashion mecca VRG GRL have made a lasting foray into the world of e-commerce. Since first opening their doors 15 years ago, their unique street style has been a driving force behind the brand – an important point of difference in the famously competitive fashion market. “Our sense of style is very much a part of it,” says Daniella. “We celebrate creativity and make style not about what you wear, but how you wear it.” Indeed, the pair’s ability to make everything look like an insouciant must-have, has seen them amass over one million followers and a slew of famous fans from Whitney Port to Kendall Jenner. VRG GRL VRGGRL.COM
Brooke & Mike from The Flower Bar Co. A dream and a pre-pandemic sea change saw Brooke and Mike of The Flower Bar Co. swap bustling Sydney for calmer waters in sunny Palm Beach. Now, just two and a half years on and life has unfolded at warp speed with babies, puppies, a new home, and a flourishing floristry and gifting business. With 100% online growth in the past year, The Flower Bar Co.’s success is testament to the supportive and collaborative team the couple have fostered. “We have quite different backgrounds,” says Brooke. “But somehow we always find ourselves settling on the bigger picture in largely the same way – it’s uncanny!” With a growing bevy of high-profile clients from Aje to Bec & Bridge, the couple have now set their sights on revolutionising flower delivery Australia-wide. Andrew & Rob from Graya™ For some families, business is born out of necessity or chance, but for brothers Andrew and Rob of Brisbane’s builder du-jour, business was always “the end goal”. Joining forces (and skill sets) straight after study, they founded the design institution we now know as GRAYA™. Now, after almost 10 years in the industry, their communal drive seems to be paying off, with the two now synonymous with luxury living in Brisbane. “We are very particular with our style – it’s critically important to our brand,” says Andrew. “We love pushing boundaries. Our goal is to develop, design, and build the best projects in Queensland.” And, in an industry constantly at the mercy of change, this unity has been instrumental in the pair’s success. As they say, “being able to share the hard times, [as well as the] success with your brother makes it all worthwhile.” GRAYA™ GRAYA.COM.AU
Dwayne, Ashleigh & Liberty from Oculus Prosthetics From gas rigging to the world of private medicine, Dwayne Collins’ life pre- and post-the birth of his daughter Liberty, couldn’t look more different. A glazier by trade, his career took a drastic turn in 2013 after Liberty was born with a rare eye condition leaving her in need of an eye prosthesis. After several heartwrenching appointments, Dwayne decided to teach himself to craft her prosthetic eyes himself. So, after studying (mainly via YouTube) and training with renowned Ocularist John Pacey-Lowrie, Dwayne founded Oculus Prosthetics at home in 2017. Not long after, demand drove Dwayne and his wife Ashleigh to open their custom-built location on the Gold Coast which now provides life-changing care for hundreds every year. In Dwayne’s own words, “starting with nothing when a client walks through the door and having them walk out completely changed for the better is the most rewarding part of what we do.” OCULUS PROSTHETICS OCULUSPROSTHETICS.COM
Kylee & Michael from Cutting Edge 11 years of marriage, five girls, floods, and a pandemic later, and Kylee and Michael are still going strong at the helm of Cutting Edge Post Production. An Australian film and advertising industry mainstay, Cutting Edge turns 30 this year after surviving decades of ups and downs. “The one thing that’s for certain in life is that you never know what’s around the corner,” says Kylee, who is now in her 28th year at the company. So what’s the secret? In a word – family. The couple are joined in the business by three of their five daughters, Michael’s brother Rob, and Kylee’s cousin Britanee, and they’re far from the only family in the fold. “Michael and I have grown up working here and raising our families – so have our people – and we take pride in offering an environment where being a successful working parent is achievable and encouraged, as it was for us.” CUTTING EDGE CUTTINGEDGE.COM.AU

THE FAMILY
Ask any Italian and they’ll swear up and down that their family cooks the best food, but for the Carney brothers, most of the Sunshine State would actually agree. By DINUSHKA GUNASEKARA
T
he siblings behind the much-loved Gemelli Group – twins Alec and James plus older brother Paul – grew up in the kitchen in their hometown of Griffith (whose agricultural population is largely made up of Italian immigrants), led by the matriarchs of their family. “Mum’s a good cook,” James says. “We were brought up cooking at home, which is how the restaurant came about.” That restaurant is the famous Gemelli in Broadbeach – a Gold Coast institution renowned
22

for its traditional Italian fare, finessed with a modern flair. Translating to ‘twins’, the venture began by Alec and James who were drawn to the glitter strip by familial connections. “The place where we are now, we initially didn’t like, but Mum said this one’s good,” Alec says. “We wanted to be next to some of the big players. Back when we came here on holidays, Mum and Dad used to spend a special night out at Moo Moo and now we’re open next door.” STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU
@STYLEMAGAZINES
Nineteen, nifty, and a little naive, the twins saw a gap in the Gold Coast market for proper Italian food, as opposed to the Australianised version the area offered. “A lot of people would walk past the restaurant and say: oh, you know seven restaurants in four years went broke in this space?” Alec says. “In the first six months of opening, we were so dead. It was so quiet we didn’t even have to clean the kitchen properly. The first weekend some guy wanted to kill me because I put him off tap!”
FOOD + DRINK
Needless to say, the brothers have learnt a lot since then. Now Alec’s in the kitchen, James runs operations, and Paul – who joined the boys after moving back from London when his visa ran out – is in charge of drinks. “I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I came back so I said I’d help them out for a bit,” says Paul. “And then I never left. I fell in love with the whole hospo thing.” Within two years, business was booming, leading them to open a casual trattoria in Nobbys Beach, Gemellini, as well as an old school locale, Roy’s. “With Roy’s, we saw the restaurant on Gumtree for sale,” James says. “It was a restaurant we knew – our nonna’s 65th birthday was there when we were kids.” At first, Roy’s was a second take on Gemelli, but the brothers quickly realised replicating the style didn’t work for the neighbourhood. “We did a rebranding and called it Roy’s by Gemelli after our dog,” Alec says. From there, it was a few years until the boys took the leap up the highway to bring their authentic dishes to Brisbane. “We had a few different spots signed, but we ended up pulling out because we weren’t ready,” says James. But as they say, when you know, you know, and the James Street venue was unquestionably meant to be, bringing with it a new venture for the Carney brothers. “We’ve always wanted to do a little Milanstyle bar,” Paul says. “It’s exciting to do something a bit different alongside the family-
style restaurants.” Once upon a time, their cocktail menus consisted of cosmopolitans, margaritas, and bluffing their way through drink requests at the bar, but at Bar Tano, each of the cocktails has an Italian ingredient or influence that forms the basis of the tipple. When you pull up a seat at any of the Gemelli Group’s five haunts, you’re joining the Carney family table. The iconic rigatoni ragu uses a family recipe to create the eighthour slow-cooked oxtail and pork shin, with crushed tomatoes imported from San Marzano. Their specials are often beloved dishes from their aunties, two of whom work for the brothers, as their head of accounts and reservation manager. Even their head chef was the one who taught the brothers how to cook back in the day. “He came up to the Gold Coast in the first six months of opening; we hadn’t seen him in years,” Alec says. “We were writing on a blackboard ‘Chef Wanted’ and he walked in randomly. We were like: is that God walking through the door?” Similarly, they treat their staff like their own. With many of their Broadbeach employees having been there since day one, they’ve trained dishwashers to become incredible chefs and even given out 20 Australian passports to staff from Italy to Nepal. “We’ve brought a big Italian influence to the Gold Coast,” Alec says. “A lot of pizzerias and trattorias in the last five years are from ex-Gemelli staff.” Of course, working with family has its ups and downs. “We can trust each other and rely on each other, but it’s your whole life. One of our meetings back in the day was around the family dinner table with the dogs on the ground,” Alec says. “There’s a bit of punching on. You can always fight, but you get over it.” And when a brother isn’t pulling their weight in the business? Mum’s only a phone call away. GEMELLIITALIAN.COM.AU @GEMELLIITALIAN

When scrolling through the tasteful pieces you’ll notice how modern, minimal, and truly elegant the designs are. Through each decade of his career, you can see that Elvis’ fearlessness, and his daring to be different only further increased his appeal to the audience. She talks about how the impact of Elvis’ status as a fashion renegade was not lost on her. “I was conscious of the lace shirt and wearing pink…the strange thing about him is that he is so innately masculine as a character that the contrast between the two just felt right.” She continues, discussing the challenges of “finding a way of taking historical costumes and picking the ones that expressed his punk-ness, his difference, his sexuality. All the things that were shocking about Elvis. Because now, when we think about Elvis, we just think about him as being this handsome, classic figure. It’s not provocative anymore.” Seeing Austin Butler’s portrayal coupled with Catherine’s artistry and Baz’s signature filmmaking, you have the perfect melting pot for a story as fantastical as this. It becomes clear how Elvis’ fashion was as much a rebellion as his music was. Revolting against the social norms in his style of music, his stage presence (as well as his outfits) blazed a path for all those who followed him. After shaking Catherine’s hand and exiting the elegant hotel room, I gained a true understanding of the craftmanship and devotion that was stitched into each every costume that brought the King of Rock and Roll to life on screen.

MEET YOU AT THE WATERLOO Satisfying the tastebuds of all who enter, The Waterloo Hotel is a delicious destination to add to your radar. By VALENTINA TRIFUNOV
P
erched on the corner of Ann Street and Commercial Road sits a true institution of craft beers, modern bistro, and Art Deco architecture. We are talking about one of Brisbane’s most cherished pubs – the Waterloo Hotel. This old-timer is Fortitude Valley’s oldest pub – over 140 years in the making. An excellent example of the power of historical preservation, which is just one of the many charms found under the roof of the Waterloo. This month, we had the honour of trying the new winter menu filled with light, healthy options as well as the classic pub feeds that we all know and love. This new menu is a refreshed direction for the venue, introducing some more refined dishes that contain an epic concoction of flavour. What better way to start your four-course meal than with a delightfully zesty bruschetta? It was oh so fresh! Followed by the chargrilled
octopus to put our tastebuds to the test. The blend of woodland sorrel, whipped nduja, and buttermilk dressing left the whole table wanting more. We finished off our starters with the lamb kofta and braised pork shoulder san choy bow – these dishes delivered a pleasant kick for our first course and then we were ready for mains. The cauliflower steak made for a deliciously tasty main dish. Yes, cauliflower steak! Who woulda thought! And we can assure you it was a crowd-pleaser – a gold star indeed. This unexpected delight was a satisfying and filling offering – it was peppered with a sprinkle of nuts and berries making for an exquisite combination. Next up, pasta la vista baby! We couldgnocchi believe how good the gnocchi was… With golden shallots, wild mushroom, broccolini, and burnt butter… need we say more? The taste train was still firmly on the track as JULY 2022
we continued our way through the remaining mains of barramundi and pizza. Crisped to perfection. The sweetest way to celebrate this was with dessert, of course! Life is simply too short not to indulge in something delicious, after all. The deconstructed pear crumble was a showstopper, and we haven’t stopped thinking about the brownie and honeycomb since our first mouthful. Who is behind this fabulous taste sensation you ask? Head chef, Michael Stillman and executive chef, Sam Roberts. The ultimate dream-team taking the kitchen by storm. Alas, it is time to pull up a bar stool and enjoy a cold one. Whether you’re a rugby-loving local or chic inner-city dweller, this is the place to be. Rustic, hearty, and the perfect mix of new and old! Women caring for women Introducing Maiden Health – where women are the priority.
I
t’s a woman’s world, we’re just living in it – and that’s why a woman’s health is a priority. At Maiden Health, a boutique obstetric, gynaecology, and fertility practice, the doctors and staff are committed to making women the number one priority. Here, you’re in safe hands with an all-female team of specialists, allied health professionals and caring support staff with one common mission: to provide women of all ages with evidence-based care in a friendly and modern environment. What sets the clinic apart from the rest are the incredible specialists, Dr Lisa Harris, Dr Meghan Stafford, and Dr Alexa Bendall who became friends whilst studying medicine at the University of Queensland 15 years ago that have reunited to work together at Maiden Health. Now they make up a team of like-minded female doctors that are passionate about caring for women and pride themselves on providing the highest
quality of care and support, each time you visit. They are here to assist each individual woman to live their best life, so you can say no to the one-size fits all approach and pave your own journey to health or motherhood. Whilst all three ladies have different clinical interests and abilities, they are very similarly minded philosophically, making them the ultimate dream team. As mothers themselves, they understand what it’s like to go through the highs and challenges on the journey to motherhood and beyond, and with their maternal nature, they integrate their experiences and expectations for care into their daily practice at Maiden Health. These fabulous ladies also try to take time to look after themselves, which enable them to better care for patients. Dr Lisa loves to do triathlons, read a good book and watch/ coach the kids sport, Dr Alexa enjoys yoga, and Dr Meg loves to go for long bike-rides with her husband and three active boys. JULY 2022
The boutique private practice created by Dr Lisa four years ago, is located in Watkins Medical Centre on Wickham Terrace, boasting a contemporary and feminine space. It offers a full range of Obstetrics, Gynaecological, Fertility, Obstetric Ultrasound, and women’s Physiotherapy services all under one roof. Whether you need a helping hand on your journey to motherhood or a surgical or non-surgical gynaecological solution, Maiden Health is there to nurture and assist along the way – no matter your age or situation. As the team and list of services grow, so does the need for space. Maiden Health is excited to announce that they will be moving into a new office later in the year, stay tuned! Coaching is key
All aboard the family getaway!
We’ve heard that practice makes perfect. If that were the case, I’d be great at everything I’ve been doing all my life, which isn’t true. Practice makes permanent! It is deliberate practice that makes perfect, that is, engagement in structured activities specifically to improve performance. When we study, we listen to our teacher – the sage on the stage. When we work, we heed our mentor – the guide on the side. When we want to do something exceptional in life or business, we access a coach to sharpen the focus on what we need to specifically improve. A coach will help you measure how you are currently doing, map what you need to practise, and then you modify what you do, so you work incrementally toward excellence. To find a coach, engage one who has expertise in the areas you’d like to develop, and they’ll help direct your life with structure, rather than leaving it to chance.
Family holidays are the perfect opportunity to reconnect with one another and create life-long memories. As a mum, I know travelling with a family can be challenging, so here are a few personal recommendations. Why not seek out the “Big 5” on a wildlife safari in Kenya or float over the Masai Mara in a hot-air balloon. Explore North America’s Wild West or cruise along The Danube – stopping to steal a scene from The Sound of Music. Multi-generational travel (my speciality) combines curated tours, private villas, yacht charters, and canal barges, which are perfect for extended-family celebrations. Consider all-inclusive sun or snow resorts that offer exceptional value and cater to every taste and style. Costs are generally upfront, adding to the convenience. Talk to me about booking a customised, hassle-free family holiday that’s right for you and be sure to stay up to date by signing up to the newsletter at travelmanagers.com.au/rosefebo

Casual wedding
To those who are expecting
Looking ahead to the spring and summer months welcomes the official wedding season of Brisbane. And this year, expect a good portion of weddings to be more on the ‘casual’ side. A more casual and relaxed wedding does not mean you have to sacrifice on style. As the groom, you can still wear a suit – just go for a more relaxed fit. Single-breasted, one button notch lapel suits are a classic and casual selection. Or, try an unstructured jacket – this will provide a more relaxed, natural shoulder and is a lighter, cooler option. Your trouser can be shorter and tapered which is appropriate if you are considering wearing a loafer with no socks or sockettes. If you decide on a vest, consider leaving the first button undone to create a more laidback feel. For fabric, consider lightweight wool, linen or cotton to keep you cool and relaxed. When it comes to colour, choose naturals, light blue, light grey, or, for the more adventurous, a light pink.
As you prepare for your little bundle of joy to arrive and are busy dealing with everything from names to birth plans. The last thing you want to worry about are unsightly and sometimes painful, varicose veins. When pregnant, your body is producing extra volumes of blood to support you and your baby. This increases the pressure in your circulatory system and so it needs to work harder to stay efficient. Additionally, your body is going through numerous changes to be able to house your baby. Such as an increase in progesterone production, the “relaxing” hormone – which can cause veins and their valves to dilate resulting in blood pooling. There is no way to completely prevent varicose veins however many women see their veins go back to normal within 3-6 months post-partum. Varicose veins are hereditary, so if your mother had similar issues when giving birth to you – then they might stick around or reappear in any subsequent pregnancies.

COFFEE MASTERCLASS with Penny Wolff
REAL ESTATE with Craig Lea
Mum, can I have a cup of coffee?
The right home for your family
I can remember asking my mum as a teenager if I could have a cup of coffee. While I don’t remember exactly how old I was (or even what her answer was at the time), I know I was definitely on board with enjoying coffee at our local coffee shop where I regularly worked. When my daughter was in high school, she floated the same question. And while my ‘what would my mum do’ approach to parenting has so far served me well, I found myself pondering the health recommendations. Interestingly, Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has no recognised health-based guidance values for caffeine. In essence, families should always make their own decisions and assess what works best for them, however, it is worth noting that caffeine is present in many other kid’s drinks, such as Coke, energy drinks, and even chocolate. There is approximately 50mg of caffeine per can of cola, which is comparable to a cup of instant coffee. From a health perspective, coffee would potentially be a better option than some caffeinated soft drinks!
When purchasing a home, the wish list varies for each family. For some, a pool is non-negotiable, along with separation for older kids. Alternatively, some buyers require three bedrooms on one level. Understanding the living setup of each buyer is fundamental with so many variations. For sellers, this understanding drives who your best buyers are – for most, floorplan tends to be critical as opposed to finishes. Are there any opportunities for you to improve the functionality of your house before selling? For buyers, create your wish list early on and separate in to clear non-negotiables and negotiables. The latter might include things that you can always install later or improve over time such as finishes. Consider and plan – this will ultimately assist your buying experience.

CAREER COACHING with Elizabeth Kemanetzis
BUSINESS AND MINDSET with Brad Wegner
The career conundrum
Noodles make me laugh
Successful career planning requires making decisions. These decisions centre on the kind of career you are seeking to establish. When making decisions about our career, we consider a range of external factors, for example, family expectations, family responsibilities, cultural stereotypes, and gender stereotypes. We also reflect on internal factors such as our confidence, or lack thereof, fear of change, fear of failure, and fear of making the wrong decision. Knowing what is important to you is one of the first significant steps in making a career decision. Having a career conversation with a family member can help with the decision-making process by helping you clarify: • How well does this career fit with my skills, values, and interests? • How will this career affect my family, friends, interests, and other commitments? • Is this a career I can commit to? • How can I progress in this career? For more information on careers and coaching, contact thebrownpennymuse@gmail.com
In most coaching sessions I am required to utilise cognitive reframing. This technique allows my client to see their situation or problem from a different, often less distorted perspective. When the frame is shifted, the meaning changes, which in turn changes thinking and behaviour. I experienced a reframe recently and I am so grateful for the simplicity of it. I have had a phobia of needles since I was five. A good friend had also experienced this phobia until he changed the word needle to the word noodle. I laughed. I have no emotional reaction to the word noodle, and it instantly removed all memories and physical sensations of you know what. Noodle. So simple!

FINE JEWELS with Troy McKenzie
BEAUTY EDUCATION with Mariana Fataccioli
A family history
SPF for you, SPF for everybody!
A key part to the success of my auctions at Leonard Joel is the discovery of jewels, luxury goods, and art during the consignment process. Combine this with many years of experience and key contacts in the Brisbane market, consignment is an extraordinary journey – one that I am lucky to call my everyday vocation. Recently, a Brisbane family reached out via consignment and have offered Leonard Joel the opportunity to auction a collection of designer handbags, with an assortment of luxury jewellery to match. When presented with these occasions, I am always privileged to be able to treat these family treasures with respect and find them a new home where they will be truly loved. Our team has just finalised a successful June viewing for our Fine Jewels collection, and we are now working towards our Important Jewels preview on 30th and 31st July in Brisbane. If you, or someone you know, has any pieces you’d like to offer for auction, I would be delighted to have a confidential chat.
Whether it’s a walk along Kangaroo Point, or a picnic at New Farm Park with friends and family, we tend to let down our guard in winter when it comes to sun protection. So, consider this your beauty besties’ reminder to slip, slop, slap! The general rule is that it takes 20 minutes for your skin to burn when in the sun. Did you know that the SPF number is an indication of how long your sunscreen will protect your skin? For example, SPF15 gives you 15x protection with 300 minutes of coverage and filters out 93% of UV rays. An increase in SPF will filter UV a marginal percentage higher but will provide you with longer protection. Lastly, always go for a broad-spectrum sunscreen which blocks out both UVA and UVB.

INSIDE OUR SPACE @DAVIDCHATFIELD_
They’re the mother-daughter duo who are bringing Pinterest boards to life with their newly restored, deliciously pink guest house in the heart of New Farm – Miss Midgley’s. By BETHAN WARRIOR
@DAVIDCHATFIELD_
Hey Lisa and Izzie! First and foremost, tell us where the name Miss Midgley’s came from? This handsome old building has been a grand private home, orphanage, hospital, school, and residential flats in its varied life. Annie Midgley established the school in 1903 and ran it for 50 years. It had the charming name ‘Miss Midgley’s Educational Establishment’. She was an inspirational woman and we named the guesthouse after her.
@STATICIDENTITY
How would you describe the interior design style for Miss Midgley’s? Clean, contemporary, no clutter, and functional. We embraced the historic qualities of the building and drew colour inspiration from the famous pink stone walls. For our kitchens and bathrooms, our new fittings walk the line between old and new – such as butlers sinks and oversized taps and spouts. Why pink? Why not?! Pink is an important historical colour for this building. Our early heritage investigations revealed many, many layers of pink paint. The building has been painted pink for over 120 years and was known as the Pink Flats from the 1950s. As the new custodians of the building, we didn’t want to lose that history. JULY 2022
What was the renovating process like? What were the highs and lows? So many! Overall, we were lucky we got the building when we did as we managed to save it before significant structural works were required. As we demolished walls, hidden gems appeared – an original stained glass fan light above the front door, some remnants of delightful hand painted wallpaper, and as the concrete render crumbled off the walls, beautifully convict cut stone blocks saw the light of day for the first time in over 150 years. Something we’re still really excited for is to watch the landscaping grow in. We’ve selected multiple plant species that once mature, will bloom with pink flowers and form an entry way to the driveway. What can guests expect from a stay at Miss Midgley’s? Any of the five, two-bedroom apartments in Miss Midgley’s provide an opportunity to stay in one of Brisbane’s oldest homes, unlike anything else we’ve seen in Brisbane. Nestled in a suburban landscape, guests can really live the New Farm life instead of just visiting it. It operates with a distinctly personal feel instead of a large-scale hotel. Put down the iPad, it’s time to get dirty. By ASTRID TAEMETS
I
t’s freezing – below zero degrees – with sleet covering the ground of the woods and a howling wind ripping through the trees making them sway and creak in Skive, a rural town in Jutland, northwest Denmark. Yet, despite the frigid temperatures, there’s a steady footfall of crunching leaves and the sound of children laughing, playing, completely unphased by the harsh environment around them. This is Forest School: an outdoor education program that relies on the interest of the child to dictate the day’s activities. From hikes to climbing, building mud huts, making spears, and learning how to create fire, Forest School is child-led handson learning within natural elements – no matter the weather conditions. Originating in Scandinavia, the world’s first known forest school was created by Ella Flatutau in Denmark in 1952, and has since been widely adopted across the UK, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, and Australia – including Brisbane, where Wildlings Forest School offers nature playgrounds, Forest Kindy, and school holiday programs. Inspired by a conference on nature play they attended five years ago, Wildlings founders Nicki Farrell and Vicci Oliver have been operating out of the Sunshine Coast and two Brisbane locations, with Amanda England joining the helm two years later to help bring more awareness to the benefits of child directed play in nature. “Our goal is to advocate for kids to be kids,” says Amanda. “We believe the best
place for them to do that is outdoors where there are no walls to bounce off and the scope for their imagination is huge. Forest School puts the dirt back in childhood.” As the sessions are based on the children and their ideas, no two days are the same.
“As facilitators, we are there to observe and help them explore their ideas when invited.” And Amanda stresses that notion: “We often find that when we join in uninvited, the children disperse and move onto something else. Children learn through play, and it is our job to ensure that we give them JULY 2022
uninterrupted time to do that.” Whether it’s a bushwalk where they scramble over rocks and creek hop, draw with sticks in the dirt, or build a fort in the forest, those who follow the Forest School philosophy strongly believe that this type of “risky play” stimulates positive fine motor skills, competent risk assessment, intelligence, resilience, self-confidence, emotion, and imagination incomparable to that of classroom programs. “By allowing children the freedom to be themselves, follow their own rhythm, and learn naturally, we find they are often more engaged,” says Amanda. The worldwide spread of the Forest gospel is trending, with more countries adopting the concept, and the benefits have been astounding. Research shows children are less stressed, they concentrate more, their immune system is improved, and their motor development is astronomically better. Still can’t convince yourself “risky play” is a good thing? “Like other Forest Schools around the world, Wildlings provide a space to take risks and explore in safe surroundings. We believe that if we give children the space to safely take and assess risks, they will only do so within their limit. No matter what the environment, children take risks. It’s part of their nature to do so. Why not give them a space to do it where their creativity and imagination will thrive?” WILDLINGS FOREST SCHOOL BRISBANE OFFICE: 0426 887 084 SUNSHINE COAST OFFICE: 0438 918 891 WILDLINGSFORESTSCHOOL.COM

A SLUMBER PARTY STAYCAY
B
y the time we pulled up to The Westin, it’s safe to say I had lived a day. The kids had been particularly ‘energetic’ that morning and I was on the tail end of a huge work week. I was keen to unwind and spend some much-needed quality time with my boys. Cue, The Westin Brisbane’s Ultimate Slumber Party – a family package that meant our room would include a tepee, a storybook library, and all the toys needed to ensure a stay filled with plenty of play, wonder, and imagination. Believe me when I say that this stay couldn’t have come at a better time. The following day would be my birthday and it was my eldest son’s (Harley, 5) last day of school, so I was sure that this stay would be a reward for all of us. Check in was a total breeze and the excitement levels were high as we opened the door to our spacious suite. First on the agenda – a bathroom check. The boys have a fascinating appreciation for good bathroom decor and The Westin’s did not disappoint 66

with floor-to-ceiling marble tiles, a spacious bathtub, and a big rainwater shower head – just the kind they like. We had only been in the room a minute and Harley was already in the tub (having pre-packed a glitter bath bomb in anticipation). After, it was time to check out the gorgeous pool which had a swim-up bar that I was dying to test out. The pool was a warm 24 degrees and had a shallow section that meant Jude (2) could bounce around and splash in the water without me having to fully get in. After an hour of pool fun, a smoothie break for the boys, and a Champagne recharge for mummy, we decided to head back to the suite for some winddown time. We spent the rest of the afternoon watching Peppa Pig, playing hide and seek with the stuffed animals, and laughing – it was pure bliss. We read an array of the sweetest stories imaginable; tales about filling buckets with acts of kindness and being brave. We lay under the tepee and talked about all the fun things we had STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

done during the day, and all the adventures we would have tomorrow. The boys just loved having a hotel room that felt like it had been curated just for them! Dinner rolled around and we were ready for something low key so opted for room service. The novelty of room service was a big hit for the kids and a win for my husband and I who were far too tired to get everyone looking presentable for dinner – including ourselves! The following morning was my birthday and I was spoilt with pressies and cuddles, an amazing buffet breakfast, and treated to the signature massage at Heavenly, The Westin’s in-house spa. What a beautiful way to replenish my mind and body, and finish off a truly memorable staycay. Only a day prior I had walked into The Westin feeling tired, stressed, and craving more time with my little humans. Now, that felt like a distant memory and instead I was a relaxed ‘fun’ mum with a very full heart. THE WESTIN BRISBANE 111 MARY STREET, BRISBANE CITY P 3557 8888 MARRIOTT.COM
