Ciao!

Lately, we’ve been living vicariously through friends and colleagues who are soaking up the sun on their dreamy European summer vacays.

While an Italian escape isn’t in my plans this year, it didn’t stop us from channelling the allure of Italy right here in Brisbane. Inspired by the legendary Sophia Loren, we shot our cover at the popular riverside Bar Pacino, (thank you Giuseppe Petroccitto for opening your place up to us). Once again, Style photographer Chloe has brought our vision to life with this shoot and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the results. I find black and white photography to be so captivating. Don’t you agree that it always evokes a mood – a sense of nostalgia and timelessness?

In this issue, we’re also spotlighting the leafy suburb and businesses of Ascot. Celebrating our 23rd year in business, it’s

EDITOR’S NOTE

ITALIAN CHARM, ASCOT ELEGANCE, AND THE WILD BEAUTY OF PIHA

lovely to feature the suburb where Style first started. Again, it’s a nostalgic nod to our roots and growth – from a local magazine to a bustling creative agency, Style Media.

I also had the pleasure of interviewing designer Alice McMullin of McMullin recently. As a fellow Kiwi, Alice and I bonded over our mutual love for Piha on the wild west coast of Auckland. Piha’s black sand surf beach and untamed beauty have inspired Alice’s latest collection, and we are here for it. It is sublime!

As always, we’re dedicated to keeping it local, showcasing places we’ve experienced and recommend in Brisbane, Gold Coast and beyond, while also sharing global brands we love.

We hope you enjoy our July issue, and if you see something you like, or book a table, please tell them you saw it in Style! They’d love that.

Cheers!

With a spacious, newly-renovated outdoor seating area and a refined indoor dining area, both boasting panoramic scenes, you’re always guaranteed a buzzing atmosphere and impeccable service.

Feeling peckish? You’ll find authentic Italian food on the menu, ready to satisfy those cravings. SUPERNOVA

PETITE

Across 20 plates and 20 glasses, this French-inspired bistro and wine bar brings curated pairings to East Street. Joining its cult-favourite siblings Happy Boy and Snack Man, Petite is elegantly simple in both its aesthetic and offering – serving up small to large plates by statement chandeliers and the marble bar.

@PETITEBRIS

The team behind croque-concept James & Antler have opened up another niche eatery – this time specialising in soba and sandos. The Japaneseinspired cafe in Fortitude Valley offers a tight breakfast and lunch menu featuring contemporary flavours, with katsu naturally playing a starring role as well as delicious matcha brews among the drinks.

SAVILE ROW

This vibey venue is one of Brisbane’s finest hidden gems and is perfect for those seeking a sip – just look for the orange door on Ann Street. With an exciting new menu featuring 16 unique cocktails, each sip will encapsulate the experience of walking down Savile Row.

SHAKEN NOT SLURRED

Hold the liquor and embrace some spirit-free fun this Dry July.

AGNES

With five zesty and delectable non-alcoholic mocktails on the menu, this renowned restaurant is not only famous for their smoky morsels, but they’re also serving up stellar drinks, too. Want to try something a little off the beaten track? The NON 3 is a toasted cinnamon and yuzu wine alternative that’s perfect for the chilly season, although our pick for year-round enjoyment has to be the Johnny Madrid: a mix of green tea, cucumber, citrus, and fizz.

LOS

When it comes to expert mixologists and well-crafted flavour profiles, those in the know will tell you that the team at LOS are second-to-none. And it turns out, their mocktails are raising the bar just as much as their tiddle-inducing counterparts. Why not whet your whistle with their Phuket Spritz – made with rhubarb, ginger, and Lyre’s Classico alcohol-free prosecco. Another? Yes please!

MIDTOWN

For those who prefer the appeal of a classic cocktail with a refined taste, look no further than the Lyres No Booze Old Fashioned from Midtown. Smooth, simple, and most pleasing to the palate, this no-alcohol drink is just as timeless as the mad men and movie moguls who popularised the cocktail back in the 1960s – just without the rowdy intoxication...

THREADS OF BRISBANE

We chatted with the creative minds behind three standout, local fashion labels.

Tell me about yourself I have the audacity to manifest ideas out of nothing. Describe your brand in three words Dark romantic synthesis What is your design process? A feeling will often inspire the process first. I then enjoy toiling and working on a mannequin developing silhouettes. Sometimes fabric will inform a shape, sometimes it’s the accidents, or sometimes it’s building upon a study explored in the past reimagined. How has your label evolved over the years? I guess it’s an exploration of storytelling through personal myth. Each collection began a chapter to the body of work. I am soon approaching my 20year anniversary next year, so I have been quite reflective lately. I feel like the DNA of the brand persists even though I have tested the boundaries as part of my growth, not just through design but interesting collaborations and the role of auteur. What do you hope your legacy will be? That I have left a memory on our cultural landscape. That I have contributed to beauty and inspired a feeling. Any projects coming up? I have an opportunity to go overseas this year to develop a component of the collection for my 20-year anniversary.

KIARA AND BIANCA BULLEY

DESIGNERS AND OWNERS OF BULLEY BULLEY @BULLEYBULLEYLABEL

Tell me about yourselves We both studied fashion at QUT and from there, have pursued careers in costume and fashion academia. Bulley Bulley draws heavily on the history of costume and fashion. We love looking back at all the beautiful and often silly clothes of the past. What is your approach to design? As sisters, we grew up playing dressups together and continued to find a lot of creative joy in the process of getting dressed. As a result, our design process often involves elements of dress-ups. We often look to existing garments or costumes to imagine how they might be reinvented. Where did your love of fashion start? It was born in our

mother’s wardrobe. She was a thrifty home sewer and instilled this sense of agency in us towards fashion. We were making clothes from quite a young age. Proudest career moment? Launching this business and having the confidence to run it in a way that we want – small, slow, and bespoke. Any projects coming up? We will be presenting some work as part of Cutting Edge. For this, we have partnered with scientists from the IMB labs at UQ to translate some of their groundbreaking research into runway looks. Kiara will also be running fashion illustration workshops at QAGOMA Friday Nights, as part of the upcoming Iris Van Herpen exhibition.

SHER LO

DESIGNER AND OWNER OF ANANNASA @ANANNASA

Tell me about yourself I’m originally from Borneo, Malaysia, but Australia is now home. I got my first job in fashion as an Assistant Fashion Buyer in Metro, Singapore’s leading department store in the 80s. Since then, I haven’t looked back. After a fulfilling career in Singapore and Hong Kong, my family and I emigrated to Brisbane and in 2014, ANANNASA was born. How does your heritage inform your work? Although I am Malaysian-Chinese, I am more influenced by Indian culture. This probably stemmed from the fact we had a big fabric store in my hometown owned by Indian traders on India Street, which, as a child in the 60s, was my

introduction to the world of fashion, fabrics, and trims. What inspires you? Everything and anything. In the words of Grace Coddington, “Always keep your eyes open. Keep watching. Because whatever you see can inspire you.” Fashion icon? Growing up, it was my mum, who was always stylish and impeccably dressed. In my 20s, it was Donna Karan. Her Seven Easy Pieces, which intended to take a woman from day to night or office to party, really resonated with me. These days, I admire so many people that it is impossible to name one. Any projects coming up? Our bright and beautiful SS24 collection is launching in August.

WITH A MUTUAL LOVE OF PIHA WHERE THEY BOTH SPENT A LOT OF THEIR TEENAGE YEARS, STYLE EDITOR TRACY SINCLAIR AND DESIGNER ALICE MCMULLIN BONDED RECENTLY OVER THEIR LOVE OF PIHA’S WILD, UNTAMED BEAUTY – THE INSPIRATION BEHIND MCMULLIN’S LATEST PIHA COLLECTION.

Hi Alice. I saw your beautiful Piha Collection pop up in an eDM recently, which instantly grabbed my attention. I’m guessing you are from Auckland originally?

Yes I am from Auckland and I moved to Australia roughly 10 years ago.

What is it about Piha that has inspired you from a design perspective?

I mean, just that coastline, as you would know, is so grounding with its warm neutral tones and is naturally so ingrained in me as a Kiwi. You see it everywhere – even driving along the Auckland motorway you’ve got beautiful natives and earthy tones. Piha is a place I used to go to a lot as a teenager. So, the whole collection was based on curves prevalent in our design and a neutral colour palette that remind me of that Piha coastline. There’s also that ruggedness and richness when you think of the famous black sands. It’s such a magical place and I have a strong connection to it.

Absolutely. That makes sense, when you look at, for example, the Morris chair [from the collection] with those curves – it’s rugged, beautiful, and unexpected.

Yeah, there’s a bit of an unpredictable element, which Piha does –it’s known for being kind of rough and wild and unpredictable. So true. What informs your design choices? Do you lean into New Zealand, or is there more of an Australian or global influence?

While our look is quite eccentric, it’s neutral and probably influenced by New Zealand. However, generally, I just like what I like, it’s really as simple as that. I’ve tried to be more experimental at times, but I always go back to that neutral colour palette. It’s definitely ingrained in me and it’s really hard to stray from that, which perhaps, has contributed to McMullin having a little spot in the design world in Australia, because there is such a distinctive look about it, rather than following everyone else’s look.

What product are you most proud of and why?

That would probably be our curved boucle bed head, made in Australia, because it was quite an iconic piece, which has since been very much copied by several Australian retailers, which is a little disappointing. But at the time, it put us on the map of Australian furniture brands because it was so different from what anyone else was doing.

Bit of a game changer really, wasn’t it?

Yes, and of course that opened up some beautiful collaborations. A huge success is our Assembly Label rice paper lamp collab. That’s big because Assembly Label is a brand that I’ve always looked up to. To work with a brand like that is incredible and to produce a product that encapsulates that simple minimalism that we both really value. So yeah, that’s another product that I’m proud of and it has done so well both locally and globally.

Speaking of rice paper, what’s your favourite material to work with?

Absolutely has to be solid timber. Solid timber is something that never gets thrown out. It’s not like an MDF. Once it may no longer serve your needs, with solid timber you can sand it back, paint it, restore it, and you can pass it on. Environmentally, as long as it’s farmed sustainably, or responsibly I should say, I think it’s a material that I will forever love. I also love the colour and richness of the stains. Every single piece is slightly different and I think it tells such a beautiful story, which encapsulates what McMullin is about – and that perfectly imperfect aspect that I love.

Whose style or work do you admire?

I respect a lot of New Zealand designers and collectors, one of them being the beautiful New Zealand store – Flotsam and Jetsam. They salvage old products and everything they do is so considered. I love the concept of one man’s junk being another man’s treasure so they’re a huge source of inspiration.

Another huge influence is my mum (designer Sarah McMullin). She has a style that is very eclectic. I tagged along with her around junk stores as a child and that experience of watching what she would pick up has informed my personal style and ultimately who we are at McMullin and why I really care so much about the materials with use. Like, we would never use a veneer because of the environmental impacts. Seeing my mother buying from second-hand and vintage stores taught me about using materials that can be reused or repurposed.

She has made her mark on you.

As a child, you always watch and learn from that parental person in your life. I mean, I’d love to say there’s an amazing designer in New York who has influenced me, but the people I admire most are closer to home.

I love that. Is your mum involved in the business?

No, she isn’t in McMullin but she is our biggest supporter, and she’s a legend. Believing in me, you know? She’s always cheering on the sidelines.

And finally, what’s next for McMullin & Co?

We’re having a rebrand which is very exciting! It will be a more mature version of McMullin & Co that’s more aligned with my personal and brand evolution. I’ve become a mother, and community is so important to me now. We will be ‘McMullin’ dropping the ‘& Co’. I think at the time when I started the business, the ‘& Co’ sounded like a more credible brand. Now, I’m like, you know what, we’re just going to go with McMullin which is my grandfather’s name and my mother’s last name. Good on you. It’s strong and refined. I love it. I really appreciate you taking the time to chat.

A COASTAL ESCAPE

Book into Dorsett Gold Coast, where coastal cool collides with urban buzz in a stylish and indulgent stay – making your vacay one for the books.

When visiting the sunny Gold Coast, the most indulgent thing you could ask for is a view of the iconic coastline. Pair that with a stylish hotel, a plush bed, and 5-star service and you have yourself the perfect vacay.

Welcome to Dorsett Gold Coast, the decadent hotel in the heart of Broadbeach where coastal charm meets urban vibrancy. Forming part of The Star’s world-class leisure and entertainment precinct, Dorsett’s premium location is ideal for any visitor, being a short walk from the beach and the culinary hub of the Gold Coast.

I stayed at Dorsett Gold Coast for one night of fun, fair and ultimate relaxation and it went a little like this. After a rather over-indulgent morning at Pac Fair, my partner and I arrived at the hotel and were escorted to the Executive King Room, AKA our digs for the night. After pleading for my partner not to jump on the bed so I could get that shot for IG, we were greeted by a stylish room, its design art deco-inspired, and with a beautiful ocean view. Delighted, we tucked into our complementary chocolate and got straight to relaxing.

Despite it being winter, we couldn’t resist visiting the pool for a quick dip.

Lined with plush pool chairs and cabanas and the chic Isoletto Pool Club watering its guests with the finest cocktails, it was clear Dorsett Gold Coast knew how to host a good time.

Before we knew it, the sun set and it was time to get ready for our evening plans. Getting ready was a dream, with their generously sized shower and perfectly lit mirror, it truly was any girl’s paradise.

Once I was all dolled up, we enjoyed our complimentary bottle of bubbly on the balcony in our buttery-soft robes before heading out to a local Japanese restaurant for a decadent meal. The night ended with a mandatory trip to The Star Casino, where we tried our luck (and luck we had!)

Despite the buzz from the casino, we were eager to get back to our cosy room. After a dreamy sleep on their cloud-like mattress and pillows, we awoke to the sun over the ocean and headed up to breakfast at the Executive Lounge. An indulgent buffet awaited set against an incredible view of the coastline. The perfect way to end our mini vacay, we pledged to return for another night of luxury as soon as possible.

PROPERTY 101 WITH LAUREN MOORE

Investing in Brisbane property

Have you ever thought about buying an investment property? Now is a good time to be considering it. In January, Brisbane dwelling values overtook the Melbourne median and in May, we overtook Canberra. Now, we have the second-highest dwelling value across the capitals – a position Brisbane hasn’t held since 1997. With the Brisbane market experiencing strong interstate migration and a stock shortage across the board with both rentals and properties for sale, the forecast is for strong capital growth leading up to the 2032 Olympics.

Some benefits of buying an investment property are:

• Tax benefits

• Capital growth

• Form of passive income

• Relatively stable investment

Rental property is always in demand in Australia (particularly at the moment), so low vacancy rates are rare, particularly if your property is well located. If you want to discuss securing an investment property or a family home, please contact the team at Moore Buyers Agency.

VARICOSE VEINS WITH DR NICHOLAS KEMP

Show some leg

Covering up over winter with trousers can bring a sense of calm – no worrying about stray hairs or uneven tan lines. However, when your hems rise with the temperatures, you may be shocked to see small red veins on the back of your calf.

A quick search online will tell you they are spider veins, but what else do you need to know?

• They may be an indicator of venous insufficiency. Approximately 30 per cent of spider veins are caused by underlying incompetent veins. If you have a family history of varicose veins, make sure to get an ultrasound first to rule this out before starting any cosmetic treatment.

• Surface lasers work great on facial spider veins, however the results on leg veins do not stand up. The gold standard for treatment is sclerotherapy, which uses fine needles to inject a solution into the targeted vein.

• Treatment often requires multiple sessions if you have veins present on both legs. This is due to there being restrictions on how much sclerosant can be used in one 24-hour period.

• It is important to keep in mind that the treatment of spider veins is never completely permanent. Over time, new veins may develop in the same area and maintenance every few years may be required.

STYLING TIPS WITH MARK FERGUSON

Why are Italian men so stylish?

In Italy, style isn’t just a choice; it’s an inheritance woven into the fabric of daily life, a rich tapestry of craftsmanship and artistry handed down through generations.

The Italian fashion industry, a powerhouse with luminaries like Gucci, Prada, and Armani, is more than a business – it’s a cultural cornerstone. These iconic houses, with their storied histories and relentless innovation, don’t just set trends, they cultivate an ethos where impeccable dressing is an everyday expectation. In cities like Milan and Rome, the streets transform into runways, each man a model of precision tailoring and high-quality materials.

It’s in the details where Italian men shine. A welltailored suit, a perfectly knotted tie, shoes that speak of craftsmanship – these are not mere garments but a testament to a lifestyle that values aesthetics and precision.

Social norms in Italy further reinforce this sartorial culture. A well-dressed appearance is not just about fashion; it’s a social expectation, a marker of respectability and pride. Complemented by meticulous grooming, the Italian man’s style is a harmonious blend of tradition, quality, and an unspoken understanding of beauty.

Us Brisbane men also have an opportunity and the climate to dress stylishly year round.
