Real life

BEAUTY Mother, model, TV presenter, national celebrity and now Myer Ambassador; there isn’t much, tomboy at heart, Rachael Finch can’t do.

Crowned Miss Universe Australia in 2009, Rachael Finch didn’t always dream of being a model. Yearning instead to be a professional runner, it wasn’t until the legs-eleven brunette was scouted in her hometown of Townsville that her aspirations changed and her modelling career took flight.

Now recognised all over the world for her natural beauty and effortless style, Rachael still manages to stay true to her Far North Queensland roots. It’s this laidback Aussie attitude that has seen the proud mother-of-one become brand ambassador for one of Australia’s largest department stores.

“It’s a real privilege to be able to work with the creative and reputable brands within the Myer family, and I feel so lucky every day to be a part of the hard working team,” she says.

Like all Queenslanders, Rachael can’t wait for the summer heat to arrive. She plans on spending her days by the water with her daughter, Violet, dressed in bohemian-inspired pieces.

“It’s beautiful being able to wear soft, flowing fabrics in the warmer months that shape the body in all the right ways.

There’s a real femininity that comes with it,” she says.

Channelling the cool, easy and understated styles of her fashion icons Alexa Chung and Olivia Palermo, Rachael describes her style as simplistic, with minimal accessories. She also loves layering, often mixing and matching her favourite activewear with mainstream pieces.

With travel playing a huge part in her celebrity lifestyle, Rachael says you can’t go past good quality jeans or comfortable, long pants when on the road. She also packs her headphones, a travel-size jar of balancing balm (perfect for those stressful moments), her handy water bottle and of course, some mixed nuts to make sure her skin maintains its natural glow.

While it can be tough to maintain a healthy lifestyle while balancing such a busy schedule, Rachael credits her organisational skills and the positive energy of her husband and family for keeping her on track.

Juggling the demands of raising her daughter, pursuing her career goals and a strong relationship with her husband, Michael Miziner, Rachael Finch is the very embodiment of a modern mother.

PIP TO IT General Pants Co. Designer Director Pip Edwards tells us how to stay ahead of the fashion game this season.

One of the original designers at Sass&Bide and General Pants Co., Pip has branched out to create her own personal brand – launching her street-inspired activewear label, PE Nation, earlier this year.

Living for the athleisure, the ’90s urban street-sport trend is inherent to Pip’s own personal style and is evident in her effortlessly edgy brand.

We recently had the pleasure of speaking with Pip, to discuss all things fashion.

“I’m loving all of the new ‘mom’ jeans that will be hitting General Pants Co. this season. From Ksubi, to Insight, to Rolla’s to Levi’s I love them all,” she says.

“IT’S A REAL PRIVILEGE TO BE ABLE TO WORK WITH THE CREATIVE AND REPUTABLE BRANDS WITHIN THE MYER FAMILY.”

Despite her love of jeans it’s the Ksubi Pip Midi Skirt from General Pants Co. that is on high rotation in her wardrobe right now. Denim is also another obvious staple for Pip; as are sneakers. When asked her opinion on pairing the two, her response: “It’s the only thing! Just make sure you opt for a raw edge cropped jean.”

To pull off the look, go for oversized ’90s sport silhouettes and don’t forget your swagger.

For those unsure of how to style their hair to complement this sporty trend, Pip recommends a casual, effortless look, “Keep it lo-fi,” she says. “Dry hair shampoo dusted at the roots is key to achieving this look.”

For makeup she recommends a super light foundation, and her secret tip is to replace your highlighter with Paw Paw ointment, keeping you looking dewy faced and au naturale.

Pip’s talents aren’t just restricted to fashion. Originally studying commerce law, Pip ditched her corporate job in risk management to take up a career in styling, and has never looked back!

how great I am at sports and how being the best has always come naturally to me, I would like to give props (like only the truly humble heroes do) to the special effects team behind the ad for sometimes switching my head onto my wife’s body to make it look like I was “struggling”.

Zoë: As I coached you through

the exercises during the shooting of the commercial, did you feel proud and impressed to have such an athletic wife who was also very kind and nurturing?

Hamish: I only really remember one instance where you tried to assist me. It was during the Roman Rings segment (didn’t make the final cut) where you threatened that if I didn’t stick a triple-somersault landing you’d “divorce my ass quicker than the time it will take for the judges to write down zero on their score cards”.

Zoë: What do you say to those

people who say you are not a worthy opponent for Zoë Foster-Blake?

Hamish: I try to remind them as a marriage we are not opponents and are in fact a team. Right? I mean, what do you think honey? You know we’re not really trying to beat each other, right?

What better way to let the little one’s fun and creative side come out than with some baking.

As tasty as they are simple, gingerbread men are the perfect opportunity to get the whole family involved.

Make the simple dough and let your kids decorate!

125g butter, softened 2/3 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup maple syrup 2 1/2 cups plain flour 1 egg yolk 1 tsp mixed spice 1 tbsp ground ginger 1 tsp bicarbonate soda I cup icing sugar 2-3 tbsp warm water Silver cachous to decorate

METHOD:

Don’t deny the kids a tasty, cool treat this Summer. Beat the sugar and the heat with a healthy homemade alternative that looks incredible and tastes even better!

Preheat oven to 180° Celsius and line two baking trays with non-stick paper.

In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until whipped and creamy in consistency.

Beat in maple syrup and egg yolk for 30 seconds.

Fold in mixed spice, ginger, flour and bicarbonate soda until dough is smooth.

Cover with plastic and place in fridge to chill for 30 minutes.

Remove the dough and let it return to room temperature.

Divide into two sections and roll out until it is 5mm thick.

Let the little ones have fun cutting the dough into shapes using a gingerbread cutter.

Place into the oven and cook for 10 minutes.

Remove the gingerbread from the oven and let cool.

RAINY-DAY FUN: AVOID THE CRIES OF “MUM, I’M BORED!” AND PUT TOGETHER A BOX OF GOODIES YOU CAN WHIP OUT WHEN IT STARTS TO POUR.

Whilst the gingerbread cools, mix the icing sugar with water until it forms a smooth paste.

Place the paste into a piping bag and let the kids decorate until they are content!

For a more traditional gingerbread man, decorate with cachous or go overboard by piling on lollies and Smarties.
