PUBLISHER & FASHION EDITOR Tracy Sinclair (Johnston) Freakin’.’

EDITORIAL EDITOR Christie Sutherland THE LAST MONTH of winter has the Style office celebrating fresh air, new trends and the start of active mornings – even though I write this from the comfort of my bed on a 6ºC morning. This month, we are joined by the inspiring duo Thessy and Yiota, founders of Brisbane fashion label Sabo Skirt who are revolutionising the fashion industry. Our cover is positively glowing with these empirecreating goddesses – showcasing our local talent has us inspired. Read more about how Thessy and Yiota tune out life’s stresses and use positivity to motivate on page 33. I hope that our latest issue – showcasing the newest cosmetic and skin techniques, the most enthusiastic sport fanatics, and Facebook’s illusion of advice groups – will give you as much pleasure to read as it gave us to create. Enjoyment is, after all, better shared; which is also why this edition of Style is filled with suggestions and ideas that we believe might make our readers happy. On page 14 we ask the question of why the world is still so confused by female sports fans? Ditch the stereotypes! Whether it’s a piece to add to your wardrobe, or a feelgood moment with Youngcare’s CEO, the following pages are filled with the little things that add a sense of wellbeing to our chaotic lives. Anthony Ryan, CEO of Youngcare, is the voice of many who are faced with tough challenges and unable to speak up. Anything is possible when collaboration takes place to help a cause (Page 16).

I AM WOMAN,

R A O R E M R HEA Why is the world still so confused by female sports fans? Newsflash: you can love your sports and be feminine too. It’s time to ditch the stereotypes, writes Courtney Frank.

PEOPLE ARE OFTEN rattled by female sports fans. There’s just something about the sight of a woman who’s enthusiastically cheering for her team that unsettles some people. But the good news is – or bad, depending on your viewpoint – there are hundreds of thousands of female sports fans out there, and they have no intention of curbing their enthusiasm. Yes, they yell and scream at the TV. Yes, they understand what’s going on. And no, they don’t need you to explain the rules to them. It’s pretty straightforward, really. It’s often tough for women who steer towards anything that’s not stereotypically “feminine”. If you’re a woman and you genuinely love sport, as I do, you probably spend a lot of time attempting to prove you are genuinely interested in the finer points of the game and not just the physique of the players. My parents always gave equal encouragement to their three daughters and son on the sporting field, no matter what the sport was. So when my brother started playing football, I tagged along to every training session and begged to hold the tackle bags, fill up the water bottles, collect the balls, anything I could to be involved. I took on every after-school activity my parents offered, too, from dancing and gymnastics through

14

AUGUST17

to Oz Tag and touch football. If I wasn’t watching sport, I was playing it. I was never dragged to a football game because of my brother or dad. I genuinely wanted to be there. So imagine my frustration to read a recent online article that said, in essence, sport is just another thing women endure because their partners like it. According to the “research” underpinning the article, women who watch sports only do so to get some quality time with their significant other (insert eye-roll here). As someone who is broadly and deeply enthusiastic about sports, I found the article infuriating. Even more so when I read the study’s sample size – only 19 women were canvassed! Hardly enough to make sweeping generalisations about an entire gender. The doubters only need to know one thing: for some women, sport is just a part of who they are. In the same way a woman can love fashion, getting her nails done or going out with girlfriends, a woman can love her sport. Loving fashion doesn’t make you any more of a woman, and loving sport doesn’t make you any less of one. So how about we drop the stereotypes and get on with the game? Fox League presenter Yvonne Sampson is one woman blazing a trail in the forward pack for

stylemagazines.com.au

rugby league’s female fans. Just because she’s got the dream job doesn’t guarantee she’s a sports nut. But here’s the thing: she is. Yvonne is smart, sophisticated and genuinely enjoys her rugby league. Sport is her career, but it’s also her passion. I asked Yvonne what inspired her love for sport. “Sport is part of the fabric of being an Australian,” she says. “I fell in love with sport because of its unique ability to unite and bring everyone together.” Like a true fan, sport forms some of her earliest memories. “I remember getting up in the middle of the night to watch Pat Rafter play in the US Open, and huddling around the TV as a family to watch Kieren Perkins swim at the Olympics,” Yvonne says. When I ask what she loves most about rugby league, Yvonne relegates the subject of gender division to the bench. “I love that rugby league is so inclusive,” Yvonne says. “It doesn’t matter where you’re from, the colour of your skin, or whether you’re rich or poor. There’s a place in the game for everyone.” It’s an admirable ethos. When we finally tackle the gender divide, sport will be truly inclusive.

Anthony Ryan, CEO of Youngcare

RAISE YOUR VOICE A little awareness can go a long way, writes Emmy-Lou McKean. RIGHT ACROSS AUSTRALIA, thousands of young people with high-care needs are living in horrendous conditions without enough infrastructure to support them. But it was one couple’s struggle to find appropriate care that instigated three mates to form non-profit organisation Youngcare in a bid to change a deplorable system. When Shevaune Conry was diagnosed with aggressive multiple sclerosis and quickly required full-time care, her husband Dave was devastated to find he could no longer care for her at home. The only option for Shevaune was to be placed into an aged-care facility at the age of 33. After watching their mate struggle with the limited options available, Matthew Lawson, Nick Bonifant and Simon Lockyer dropped their careers and vowed to help make a difference by starting Youngcare. 16

Sylvia Jeffreys, Youngcare National Ambassador At the end of last year, the former chief executive of the Edmund Rice Foundation, Anthony Ryan, took on the role of CEO at Youngcare. He says he couldn’t believe that issues faced by developing countries were also happening on our doorstep. “When I first came into this role, I thought, ‘This is Australia. This should not be happening’,” Anthony says. “First of all, it shouldn’t be happening on our watch, and it shouldn’t be happening in our suburbs.” A major recurring issue for families caring for a disabled child is when a parent is unable to accept a work promotion or advantage because their child requires their complete attention. “They’ve been dealt this incredibly tough hand of cards, and then all of a sudden they’re facing all these other issues they didn’t realise would be associated with the nightmare that they’ve been thrown into,” he says.

A strong believer in a collaborative approach to raising awareness and funds, Anthony has been putting his energy into scaling up Youngcare’s operations since stepping into the CEO role. Youngcare has positioned themselves with the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme), which will see individuals creating their own care pathways with the support they need. This will greatly assist in the plan to expand Youngcare across Australia and partner with other agencies to support families affected by disability. “Our Youngcare mission, which we truly believe we can achieve, is to completely remove young people from inappropriate residential housing,” Anthony says. “And we think we can solve this issue by 2022.” YOUNGCARE.COM.AU

TWENTY FOUR HOURS WITH ANDREW CLOUGH We find out how Mortgage Choice finance guru and family man Andrew spends his time. 5:00AM I always start my day with an hour training in the gym. I also try to spend some time with my three children in the morning, helping make their school lunches and getting their bags packed. 7:45AM Fitting in a podcast or audio book on my drive to work gives me the chance to learn something new every day. Listening to someone who is kicking butt in their field, whether it’s business, investment, sport, or just life in general, is a guaranteed way to get me fired-up for the day. Add to that a coffee from Embargo’s on Chapel, and I’m ready to roll. 8:30AM The first order of business when I get into the office is to pick the music for the day. My assistant Oliver and I both love our music and have similarly eclectic tastes, but our faithful fallback is classic rock. 8:35AM My day is an ever-changing mix of tasks, from meeting with clients across town, and assisting clients with the different services we offer. This could be assisting a couple finance their first home, advising on investment loans and asset finance, and other finance and insurance-related services. Our business is very customer focused, and every time I meet with a new or existing client, my objective is always the same: to save my client’s time, money, and effort, and to help that individual client with their personal-finance goals. 1:00PM If I haven’t prepared my lunch for the day, or if I am meeting a client, I can often be found at Nundah Corner Café. If I’m with my kids, they are big fans of Sushi Edo. 2:00PM As head of group operations, I also dedicate a lot of time to researching lending policies across the 24 different banks on our panel of lenders. This can involve meeting with bank managers and industry representatives, attending professional development courses, and regularly staying up to date with the ever-changing nature of the banking and finance industry. 6:00PM My evenings allow me more time with the kids, helping with their homework and getting them fed and ready for bed. Taking time to read a book with them is always special too. 7:30PM Once the kids are in bed, my partner, Shelly, and I spend time together cooking a nice meal, having a glass of wine (or two!), and catching up on each other’s day. We don’t watch a lot of TV, but sometimes we will catch up on the sports news – the Brisbane Broncos are my team! 11:00PM Work and family are what fills my days, and honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way. There’s no better feeling than heading to bed and knowing you’ve filled your day with the things that matter most. BELIEVE IN BEAUTIFUL Beauty is so much more than just a pretty face. YOUR SKIN IS your largest organ. Loving and respecting the skin you’re in by giving it the time and attention it deserves is so important. Since its inception in 2004, Brazilian Beauty has seen the beauty industry centered around an incorrect depiction of what beauty really is. Growing and evolving with their clients over the years, Brazilian Beauty understands the value in supporting and empowering each of its clients at every stage of their lives. With the belief that everyone should be able to feel beautiful and confident, Brazilian Beauty has started offering cosmetic injectables. The injections are an extension of the salon’s advanced treatment range and are administered 18

by a team of nurses and medical supervisors to provide clients with a safe and professional anti-ageing therapy. Brazilian Beauty wants clients to feel confident in their skin and embrace their individual beauty. To that end, and because clients are often concerned that cosmetic injections are an invasive treatment, the team at Brazilian Beauty spends time getting to know each person before treatment and understanding their definition of beauty. Another misconception is that cosmetic injectables offer a one-look-fits-all result. But this is not the case. “In a world constantly trying to make women be someone else, we encourage you to be your own kind of beautiful,” Brazilian Beauty’s

Facebook page reads. In stepping away from that stereotype, the salon group is looking to create a trusting and supportive relationship between clinician and client, in the complete absence of judgement or pressure. With the introduction of cosmetic injectables, Brazilian Beauty is refreshing the brand to ensure it represents a positive approach to realistic beauty ideals. This industry progression gives every woman the opportunity to look and feel her best, which is a true representation of Brazilian Beauty’s ideals. THE ILLUSION OF FACEBOOK ADVICE Facebook advice groups are a rabbit hole of misinformation. Once you fall in, it’s almost impossible to crawl back out again, writes Jade Horrobin. ADVICE ISN’T REALLY advice anymore. It’s become an umbrella term for unjustified opinionbased commentary, and the internet is a breeding ground for it. Facebook is synonymous with bad advice, and there’s no one group to blame for this. If you’re a part of even one advice-style group on Facebook, you are both a perpetrator and a victim of this culture. Facebook groups were created as a platform to connect like-minded strangers, which isn’t inherently a bad thing. It can offer a digital solitude for those who feel they have no one “real” to turn to. But has this gone too far? These groups deal out misinformation like cards in a game of blackjack. One look at an advice group will reveal a slew of publicised falsities, stubbornness, intolerance and unreserved judgement out the wazoo. It’s no secret that Facebook deals in extremes, and there’s no easy way to circumvent that. Restricting freedom of speech is a difficult thing to manage on social media. Facebook has community guidelines that exist to try to 20

monitor the content that’s published on publicly accessible groups. The actuality of this regulation is near impossible, and it is beginning to trigger a very serious discussion about the limits on free expression in a world ruled by algorithms. Before Facebook groups with members numbering in the tens of thousands became prolific, you only saw what your friends posted.

FACEBOOK GROUPS ARE SYNONYMOUS WITH BAD ADVICE. THESE GROUPS DEAL OUT MISINFORMATION LIKE CARDS IN A GAME OF BLACKJACK. Now, just a casual scroll through your newsfeed can produce a post that descriptively recounts domestic abuse, an image that depicts a gruesome injury or graphic sexual content. Monitoring the content of a Facebook group is like traipsing through sludge – even a mammoth

effort from all moderators and admin would barely scratch the surface of the issue. The reality of the issue is this: a Facebook group will only be removed when the majority of posts violate the platform’s content policies. Even if 49 per cent of posts on a group are discriminatory, dangerous and blatantly untrue, discussions are allowed to continue along this trajectory until the scales tip in the other direction. Until they reach this point, these kinds of Facebook groups will continue to drag more and more of us down the rabbit hole. Genuine calls for advice and support may be met with sarcasm or outright abuse. This is the nature of the beast. Instead of hoping this culture will fix itself, a smarter move would be to disengage entirely. Rediscover the value of a catch-up over coffee with genuine friends when you’re seeking advice, rather than a group of strangers whose words need not have power over you. Step away from the rabbit hole. You are not Alice, and it’s definitely not Wonderland down there. AUGUST17

BREAKING THE STEREOTYPE A positive corporate culture isn’t out of reach. You just need to think outside the box. IT IS WELL documented that Google has strategically developed a workplace culture with the goal of keeping their employees happy and making them more productive. More than ever, businesses recognise that a strong corporate culture retains staff and encourages loyalty and high standards. From weekly events to special occasions, fostering a strong corporate culture is an ongoing practice. The grandeur of Google’s playground-like workplace is not the only way workplaces can cultivate positive company culture. While the daily goings-on within a company are vital, organised social events are often the primary source of stylemagazines.com.au

generating positive workplace culture. Companies that encourage workers to enjoy themselves will establish a thriving and coveted culture that customers and employees fall in love with. And therein lies business success. Loud Events excels at developing workplace culture. When companies want to celebrate milestones and goals, Loud Events has the expertise to develop personalised celebrations. Their tailored events encourage employees to relax and integrate with colleagues they may not typically associate with. Prioritising the experience of the employee through innovative and creative events is key to make these events a success.

Consider these examples: • Half-day Fridays: a laid-back gourmet barbecue where top-end management turns the sausages • Family fun days: a fête for employees’ families • A CBD scavenger hunt, ending at a bar • Awards nights to congratulate employees and encourage their peers Great performance relies on great people and culture. Positive corporate culture creates a team, and the team is the company’s DNA. LOUD EVENTS 6/146 RACECOURSE RD, ASCOT P 3200 8299 LOUD.EVENTS

Ying Zhu and Aroha Ropata

THE PERSONAL TOUCH It all starts with a conversation. THE CHANCE TO sit down with an industry professional and have a quality conversation about your financial goals is one of the key services Commbank offers. By investing in professional staff who prioritise these personal moments, Commbank has developed a culture in which the customer is valued. Ying Zhu and Aroha Ropata adopt this philosophy in their work. Having been with Commbank Group for three years and nine years respectively, both operate as leading lending specialists at Commbank’s flagship branch at 240 Queen St, the City. How can you assist clients looking to invest in property? We have a quality conversation to uncover what is important to them, and provide suggestions on how they can achieve these goals. Taking the time to have these conversations allows us to offer different options to suit their individual circumstances. 22

What advice would you give someone who isn’t certain which loan to apply for? We always recommend to clients that they take the time to make an informed decision, ask questions (no matter how silly they may seem), and utilise the many resources available, through Property Insidght Reports and the Commbank property app. Through sharing our experiences with clients, we can help them make an educated decision, rather than rushing into something. Why should someone who isn’t sure if they need extra lending support turn to you for advice? We have been able to help many clients in the past, many who have been first homebuyers, investors and renovators, through sharing our experiences. As specialists in the industry, we are able to guide our clients through each step of the process at their own pace. Additionally, the technology and resources

we have available are invaluable. What is the best thing about helping your clients? There is no better feeling than when a customer has moved into their brand new home, purchased an investment property, bought a new car, or utilised the equity in their home to support other life events. Knowing we have shared this important moment in their life and assisted them throughout the experience is priceless to us. Helping others achieve their goals is of the utmost importance. At the end of the day, we are passionate about helping our clients secure and enhance their financial wellbeing through quality conversations. Being able to share our knowledge to assist people in their goals is central to what we do as specialist lenders. COMMONWEALTH BANK 240 QUEEN ST, BRISBANE CITY P 3237 3111 COMMBANK.COM.AU/FLAGSHIP

KIDS, GO OUTSIDE AND PLAY! As Millennials go about producing the next generation, one important pastime has been left behind. Courtney Frank discusses why kids don’t play outside anymore. AUSTRALIAN CHILDREN ARE outdoors on the weekend half as much as their parents were back in the day. Where today’s parents ran around, got dirty, explored neighbourhoods and made their own fun, their offspring are more likely to be found watching TV, playing video games and churning through homework. How times have changed. Research shows that anyone who grew up in the 1970s, ’80s or early ’90s, would have spent, on average, more than two hours playing outside every day and nine hours over a weekend. In contrast, today’s youth have been found to spend less than two hours a day outside, on average, and only four hours over a weekend. Further research by the Australian Institute of Family Studies found that less than 8 per cent 24

of the nation’s children play outside every day. Along with this, Nature Play Queensland gives the shocking statistic that Aussie kids now spend less time outdoors each day than the amount mandated for the well-being of maximum security prisoners! So, what’s to blame? In a word: technology. With every technological advance, children’s experience of the outdoors has contracted. Screens give kids so many thrilling experiences, they often don’t feel the need to leave the house. Technology can be a blessing and a curse. iPads and video games can be a saving grace for parents at critical moments. I don’t have kids, so I’m not going to judge anyone who does, but I think there’s a time and place for technology in a child’s life. There are certain things a child can

only experience by venturing outdoors. Fresh air and Vitamin D-converting sunshine have numerous health advantages, interaction with other children develops social skills and sports help to improve hand-eye coordination and gross motor skills. The benefits really are endless. If only kids would put down their iPads, go outside and just play. Going outside never hurt my siblings and I. We played in the rain without catching colds, wore our cuts and bruises like battle scars, ate sand and bugs and dirt and didn’t die. Instead, we made friends with the kids down the street. Our immune systems were stronger for it, as was our thirst for adventure! And I like to think we turned out all right. READ MORE ONLINE

AS BRISBANITES, WE pride ourselves on the quality of our coffee and the richness of our café culture. From flat whites to filtered brews, we crave coffee that has been carefully roasted, expertly prepared and warmly presented. The event will feature some of Brisbane’s best food trucks and a diverse range of coffee products such as beans, brewing equipment and take-home treats. More than just a day for brews and snacks, the festival will also include free courses, such as cupping forums with coffee producer Alejo Castro of Costa Rica, roastery tours and demos. To celebrate the day, Wolff Coffee Roasters will be hosting the 2017 Queensland AeroPress Championships to find the champion brewer, as part of the world championships. Unique approach, rewarding results. – Simone Weigall

No two properties are the same so don’t settle for a generic approach to selling your most valuable asset.

THE ANTI NINE-TO-FIVE There’s a revolution upon us and it’s moving employees out of the office and into their sweatpants, writes Jade Horrobin. WORKING NINE-TO-FIVE MONDAY-TO-FRIDAY became the norm for many employees in the 20th century. But technology is disrupting this practice, as it has so many of our last-century ways. Although much of the workforce is still chained to a desk for 38 hours a week, heavy workloads and stressful days cause almost 3.5 million of us to work from home regularly. Because it allows us to check our work emails at 7pm on a Sunday night or lose an evening catching up on a heavy workload, the digital age potentially throws another spanner in the works of that elusive work-life balance. But it also brings us the workfrom-home alternative, which could be the last word in the balance debate. With more employers than stylemagazines.com.au

ever facilitating flexible working hours, it’s important to remember that teleworking doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing game. Working from home does require a disciplined restructuring of your lifestyle, though, to segregate work hours from leisure hours and maximise your creative output. It’s about producing results on your terms, whatever they may be. One thing’s for sure, teleworking is here to stay. Some pundits predict this trend will take hold rapidly, and more than 30 per cent of the labour force will be working primarily from home within the next few years. With remote work now the norm, it’s time to say goodbye to your office pencil skirts and hello to your work pyjamas. READ MORE ONLINE

Whose dad hasn’t dreamt of being a pilot and taking to the skies?

Give Dad a chance to fulfil his dreams on Father’s Day, writes Sharon Doyle. FOR THE DAD whose sock drawer already overflows, here are some alternative gift ideas. Nothing beats experience, right Dad? PILOT FOR A DAY | FLIGHT EXPERIENCE Whose dad hasn’t dreamt of being a commercial pilot – the adrenalin rush on take-off, those lives in his hands, 60 tonnes of aircraft touching down on the tarmac? Flight Experience, at Brisbane Airport, can set Dad up in a flight simulator with a qualified instructor and a choice of almost any flightpath in the world. Prices start at $195 for a 30-minute scenic flight with two take-offs and landings. Dad will feel like a hero. SPEED RACER | QUEENSLAND RACEWAYS Dads with lead-foot tendencies will love to hop behind the wheel of a V8 Holden or Ford for a few quick laps around Willowbank Raceway. He’ll be taught handling, cornering and braking before being suited up, given a helmet and strapped in. An instructor will ride shotgun, firing instructions through the helmet’s built-in intercom about brake points and gear changes. The only speed limit on this track is the one Dad places on himself. Prices start at $199 for six laps.

MASTERSTEAK | NORMAN HOTEL But speed is not every dad’s cup of tea, and Father’s Day is not a race. The Norman Hotel at Woolloongabba has a Mastersteak cooking class on Father’s Day weekend for dads who like to take things slowly and aspire to perfection. The Father’s Day class starts at noon on September 2 and offers two hours of grilling and swilling. The best part is that students get to eat their assignment at the end, and there’s a free apron. THEY CREATED AN EMPIRE

FASHION

“Our background adds another dimension to our partnership that most people wouldn’t have.”

We catch up with the two businesswomen revolutionising the fashion industry, writes Siobhan Taylor. AS PREVIOUS STYLE Magazines cover girls, the two founders of the illustrious Sabo Skirt brand, Thessy and Yiota Kouzoukas, are no strangers to us. The story of Sabo Skirt and how two best friends created a fashion empire unrivalled by any other in Australia is unprecedented. Their unique business model catapulted the humble label to international acclaim, with fans such as Gigi Hadid and Kylie Jenner, almost 2 million collective Instagram followers, and a placing on the renowned Forbes 30 Under 30 list in 2016. Part of this success comes from their steadfast dedication to their work, and not allowing themselves to be distracted by noise. “While it’s always motivating to focus on the achievements of your idols or competitors, it’s more important to focus on your own goals and growth.” More than just co-founders, Yiota and Thessy are best friends and sisters-in-law. This interesting dynamic poses unique challenges, but their stylemagazines.com.au

dedication to their label and to each other has helped them turn this dynamic into a strength. “The open, honest friendship that we both have has allowed us to have a seamless business relationship. We speak our minds and talk through decisions together as a team and having the friendship and family background adds another dimension to our business partnership that we think most other people wouldn’t have.” While the two ladies have found significant success, they aren’t about to rest on their laurels. “We have a few exciting expansion surprises up our sleeves that we can’t wait to unveil over the next 12 months.” That includes showcasing at NYFW, as well as multiple large campaigns. We can only imagine what is next for Sabo Skirt. Regardless, Thessy and Yiota are certain to continue astounding us. SABOSKIRT.COM

“Though we both have our own energies and strengths, we make sure we are involved in every aspect of the brand.”

MASTERCLASS IN COOL Coast to coast, there’s no other label doing it quite like these Brisbane babes, writes Siobhan Taylor. LOOK COOL, BE nice. This is the foundation on which friends Rachelle Sinclair and Thembi Hanify are shaking up the old-guard of fashion. More than just a masterclass in cool, these two are delighting critics with their simple but effective approach to design, through their label Mathys Sinclair. When the Sydney and NYC-based label debuted at New York Fashion Week in 2016, the response was one of buzzed excitement and refreshing newness. This first collection, Spring/Summer 17, sent a ripple of exhilaration throughout the industry, garnering significant interest and acclaim. This, we realised, was a contemporary label with a difference. Their design ethos, “look cool, be nice”, pervades their designs, bringing a refreshing feel to the streets of sportwear. 36

“A big part of our journey now is continually developing our brand voice and ethos,” Rachelle says. “We’re finding more and more that it’s essential to provide a point of view that is genuine and has a positive impact on the consumer.” Mathys Sinclair is a refreshing and contemporary take on luxury streetwear, without ever falling into aesthetic tropes. With their new way of designing, sportswear elements are given new life. Their aesthetic is built on a palate of neutral tones, lifted with bursts of moss green and cobalt blue. Hardware detailing, such as pop stud fastenings and zips, add a hard edge and sports feel, toeing the line of (but never succumbing to) traditional sportswear. The wearability of their designs, along with their fine detailing and genuine originality, are clear

Thembi Hanify and Rachelle Sinclair

indicators of the awareness these two designers have for the individuals they design for. This new venture, 10 years in the making, is not the first foray into designing for Sinclair and Hanify. “We started working creatively together by styling and art-directing shoots in Brisbane, our home town,” Rachelle says. “We then branched off into our own territories.” Rachelle was the cofounder and designer for Australian label KHALO, while Hanify has done branding and art direction for fashion powerhouses such as Rag & Bone and 3.1 Phillip Lim. “We believed we had the tools, knowledge and experience to build a successful, long-term brand together,” Rachelle says. “And thus, Mathys Sinclair was born.” READ MORE ONLINE

FASHION TAKES CENTRE STAGE

LET YOUR COFFEE DO THE TALKING

TAILORED FLORALS

LIGHTS. CAMERA. FASHION! Bring some action to your next event by taking cues from the world of fashion. Whether it’s a bold print or polished brass, put your fashion foot forward and decorate accordingly. With plans already under way for this season’s spring events, now is the time to be thinking of styling, theming and all things décor. Business owners can add pizzazz to window or central displays by analysing the space through designers’ eyes. A nip here, a tuck there and your installation will be looking on point in no time. Bring a touch of polo chic to your next ladies lunch with crisp linens, rattan lounge chairs and fresh greenery. Or vamp things up for an evening affair with bold-pink chair covers, black cutlery and charger plates, and a swathe of gold candleholders along the centre of the table. From leather to linen, brushed brass to crisp cotton, be inspired by the catwalks of Milan and Paris to make your next event truly a sight to behold.

THE AEROPRESS HAS revolutionised home coffee preparation. The lightweight filter brewer is amazing for homebrewers as it is easy to use, convenient, near-unbreakable and requires almost no cleaning. One of the biggest benefits of the AeroPress, though, is its versatility. Baristas and industry experts all agree: there is no wrong way to make coffee with the AeroPress. For best results, use freshly roasted specialty coffee beans and consider your water quality. The ratio of coffee to water, the water temperature and the time the coffee is in contact with the water are all variables that affect flavour. You want the coffee to do the talking and for the delicate coffee notes to shine through. There is more than one way to use this little device. We love it so much that we are hosting the 2017 Queensland AeroPress Championships at Wolff Coffee Roasters on Saturday, September 2, at 3pm where you can come along and witness coffee geeks brewing with this fine device. Tickets available online.

THE HAWAIIAN SHIRT is not hemmed in by boundaries. This spring’s floral phenomenon is an adaptation of the vintage floral shirt; a reinterpretation for the modern man. Hawaiian and floral prints, teamed with tailored pieces, are an increasingly popular way to convey a statement look that is relaxed yet has a sporty-luxe vibe. The modern man isn’t tied down by fashion constraints, which makes it easier for him to go down new fashion roads. Adding pops of colour and prints to your wardrobe has become exceedingly on-trend. The Hawaiian shirt is an effortless statement piece that one can’t help but feel free and youthful in. The trend has evolved into tailored and highend versions that are a long way from the oversized Hawaiian shirts that were once worn with shorts and thongs. Fashion is cyclical, and it has never been a better time to add florals to your style repertoire.

SCREENING YOUR EYE HEALTH

NOT TOO EARLY TO GET FESTIVE

DO YOU NEED A DIGITAL DETOX?

WHEN YOU SPEND all day at a computer, it’s likely you go home with throbbing and sore eyes. While the discomfort soon fades, the damage is still there. Eyestrain from hours of screen time can result in eye irritation, dryness, fatigue or blurred vision, and such problems are increasingly common. Most digital screens are backlit and emit blue light, or high-energy visible (HEV) light wavelengths, which can cause irritation and possibly long-term damage to the retina. Blue light also suppresses the sleep hormone melatonin, disrupting sleep patterns, which can add to eye strain. Dryness, caused by reduced blinking while staring at screens, is also a common factor in digital eyestrain. A person’s blink rate, normally about 15-20 times per minute, can decrease by up to half when people are fixated on what they are viewing on a screen. Just like other muscles in the body, the eyes need a varied workout and some respite from prolonged strain.

WHILE CHRISTMAS MAY seem like a speck in the distance, early planning is key to achieving the perfect Christmas party or event. This is because October through December is one of the busiest times of the year, so taking the time to plan your office Christmas celebrations a few months ahead will ensure the event runs smoothly. For workplaces, Christmas parties are an opportunity for businesses to congratulate their staff on their hard work throughout the year and to celebrate successes. Christmas events are not one-size-fits-all. Large business functions may require additional planning, including audiovisuals, lighting, and selecting a size-appropriate venue. Smaller, more intimate functions, such as cocktail receptions or dinner under the stars, need particular attention paid to catering and can be great opportunities to experiment with design. Investing in an event planner can help alleviate the stress of planning a Christmas event, and allow you to fully enjoy the experience.

TIME WITHOUT DEVICES, either a holiday away from home without any high-tech devices or digital-free time each day or weekend, is known as a datafast: a retreat from 24/7 technology! A digital vacation means getting away from our screens and phones, so we don’t have the constant flow of communication, information, alerts, and updates, even if it’s only for shorter periods of time. When we don’t access our phones, tablets, computers and televisions, we get to spend time doing other things, like connecting face-to-face with our significant other. We then have space and time for better sleep, slow cooking, listening to music, spending time outside, exploring the community, reading (not e-books), exercising, all those things we used to enjoy before smartphones and streaming TV services invaded our lives. Take a digital break from the hyper-connectivity and overload of information, communication, and entertainment. Your brain, body and relationships will significantly benefit.

HANDCRAFTED JEWELS

THE FIRST STEP TO REUNITING

DESTINATIONS TO DELIGHT GUESTS

UNIQUE, HANDCRAFTED JEWELLERY tailored to your style is the perfect way to add a personal touch to your jewellery box. If you have been thinking about getting a special piece made, here are a few handy tips to get you started: • Do research (but not too much) and start pinpointing the styles you like. You don’t have to be specific as even loose ideas will be enough for your jeweller to work with. • Try things on. You might be surprised about the colours and shapes that suit you best. • Pick a jeweller who you feel understands your preferences, and who is not afraid to think outside the box. • Look for handmade products rather than cast jewellery, as the strength of a handmade piece is of a much higher quality. We believe jewellery can be anything that you want, and are excited to help bring your jewellery dreams to life. If you are looking for a piece with personality, come chat to us about your custom design!

WHEN YOU’RE INJURED playing sports, you visit a physiotherapist. When you’re suffering from a bad cold, you visit your GP. But who do you speak to when your relationship is not going to plan? While couples may recognise their relationship is not as strong as it once was or could be, they do not always consider couples coaching as a tool to help get them back on track. This can be for a variety of reasons, but one of the most common ones is the belief that their relationship will improve on its own. This is particularly true for men who can feel overwhelmed with the idea of emotive conversations and the fear of not being “man enough” to solve emotional problems without professional help. By approaching couples counselling as a means of “coaching”, we create a safe space for couples where both partners can have an opportunity to contribute to a game plan to achieve their relationship goals. Relationship coaching helps to remind couples that strong relationships are a team effort.

IT IS REGULARLY underestimated the effect a venue can have on an event. In Brisbane, there has been an emergence of boutique venues that ooze luxury, such as warehouses, churches, galleries and restaurant spaces. There are several factors to consider when selecting a venue. Hilton and Sofitel are appealing for their CBD location, while Cloudland, Tangalooma, and St John’s Cathedral stand out as particularly exciting and individual destinations. One of the greatest challenges of selecting a venue is working within your budget, as many companies, understandably, wish to avoid excessive spending. Event managers have the industry expertise to thoughtfully navigate these varying factors and negotiate the best value for your budget. A strong understanding of event programming means event managers can ensure the entire event, from the venue selection through to the entertainment, is carefully scheduled in order for your event to run smoothly.

It’s time to explore the two-day wedding trend that’s breaking all the rules, writes Jade Horrobin. MODERN WEDDING DAYS are so jam-packed with photoshoots, cake-cutting, speeches and myriad formalities, you hardly get time to breathe. You spend countless weeks and months preparing, and then boom ... it’s over before you know it. The two-day wedding trend has come to the rescue of all those who dream of having time to enjoy their big day. Born from the “bigger is better” nuptial arms race, it’s as Pinteresty as you can get. But choosing to celebrate over two days does not automatically make you a bridezilla, and it doesn’t have to blow your budget either. Celebrations the day after commonly take the form of a low-key, no-expectations gathering. It’s really a no-brainer. Your wedding brings together all the people you love most, so why not extend that joyous time a little longer? Whether it be a casual brunch or an outdoor mid-afternoon barbecue, it’s the perfect way to relive the day before and catch up with all your out-of-town relatives. Having a two-day wedding doesn’t mean you need to plan activities to entertain your guests for every minute of the weekend. Your guests are grown-ups and grownups tend to be quite good at keeping

themselves entertained. Day two is all about taking a big breath in and turning off “bride mode”. Don’t over-plan it and allow yourself to be a guest instead. Cure your morning-after sore head with a champagne breakfast and count how many times you can say “my husband” throughout the day. After all, all the best celebrations have after-parties, right?

Here’s our pick of the stellar Brisbane locations that will make your two-day wedding one for the history books.

YANDINA For an eclectic yet romantic country wedding, you can’t go past Yandina. With luxury wooden homesteads and a plethora of gorgeous little cottages, all situated right on the Maroochy River, a two-day celebration here would go down a treat with your guests. If the day-after celebrations aren’t kicking off until lunch time, a mid-morning horse ride would be a memorable option for the bridal party and family to enjoy.

BRISBANE CBD Often overlooked, Brisbane’s inner suburbs are home to plenty of secret venues that are absolutely perfect for a two-day affair. The city surrounds offer some world-class warehouse venues for that industrial-chic vibe. Understated 44

and simple, a warehouse like The Joinery at West End can be dolled-up for a decadent ceremony and reception then transformed into a low-key cocktail party in time for your day-after celebrations.

KINGSCLIFF Byron Bay weddings have been the king of beachside nuptials for the past decade, but let’s face it, most Byron locations are overpriced and overrated. Head a little further up the northern NSW coast and give your guests an opportunity to enjoy a weekend somewhere a little under the radar. Kingscliff has all the charm of its slightly southern cousin, but with a pricelessly quaint feel. Enjoy a sunset ceremony on the beach and a morning-after brunch at one of Kingscliff’s many luxury resorts. AUGUST17

KEEPING IT REAL Discover the eclectic event space that is a slice of the French countryside right here in Brisbane. FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS, Albion’s Vieille Branche began as a store selling antiques and French provincial furniture before becoming a café and event space. That space has evolved in the past three years into a beautiful, niche setting for wedding parties of up to 150 people. Husband and wife team Jen Hillhouse and Jean-Charles Lehuby are behind the warm and atmospheric warehouse space at Vieille Branche. The couple’s generosity allows couples to use their own caterers and offer BYO drinks, which can make a big difference to a wedding budget. But for couples without a list of wedding vendors, Jen and Jean-Charles have a preferred list of people they work with often who are familiar

with the space and can help bring wedding plans to life. The best thing about Vieille Branche is that the space is already styled, giving couples the opportunity to add as little or as much as they like. The space usually sees cocktail-style weddings that start with a garden party and drinks outside before guests move inside for speeches and dancing. “We are available to help along the way with planning and prep work and offer as much advice as we can so that the wedding day runs really

smoothly,” says Jen. “We often hear guests’ surprise when they first come in ... when we open the warehouse door and they see how beautiful it is.” Vieille Branche’s rustic, stylish decor makes it unlike any other wedding venue in Brisbane. Clearly, Jen and Jean-Charles have a genuine passion for helping couples create the wedding of their dreams. VIEILLE BRANCHE 10 FOX ST, ALBION P 3862 1840 VIEILLEBRANCHE.COM.AU

FOOD+DRINK BRISBANE’S VANGUARD Oozing old-world charm and soulful character, Doo-Bop Jazz Bar is unlike any other venue in Brisbane, writes Siobhan Taylor. FROM THE DAYS of Al Capone and the Brat Pack comes Doo-Bop Jazz Bar, the newest inner-city dining hotspot. Since opening in June 2017, the two-storey venue has distinguished itself as the ultimate destination for those wanting to enjoy an all-inclusive dining experience. The ground level of the venue is an Art Deco time capsule while the Village Vanguard-esque stairwell leads to the subterranean basement and a dimly lit, intimate bar where guests can enjoy the sounds of local and international acts while mulling over New Orleans-style share plates and mains. While the upstairs bar was thriving with lunchtime diners, I was lucky enough to be escorted downstairs to the underground bar and enjoy my meal while lounging in deep, red-leather booths. As I waited for the first course, I enjoyed a cocktail (okay, two) to prepare for my meal – the cucumber and basil smash, and the spiced watermelon margarita. The first course was a delicious smorgasbord of New Orlean-style eats. Spiced corn fritters were crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, while the duck and cashew spring rolls brought an 48

element of oriental flavours to the table. The crunchy sesame tiger prawns were juicy and fresh. You’ll definitely want to order two plates of these delicious bites. The main course followed and featured an aromatic pizza of goat’s cheese, caramelised shallots and spicy chorizo, and a beautiful dish of seared gnocchi with Portobello mushrooms, asparagus and truffle cream. The pizza was crisp at the edges but perfectly doughy in the centre, while the gnocchi was rich, balanced and pillowy soft. Lulled by bluesy tunes, it was easy to understand the appeal of Doo-Bop. The staff are friendly and warm, the dining spaces are intimate yet inviting, and the menu is an expert combination of share dishes and hearty mains. Doo-Bop has created a space for diners to experience a thriving atmosphere that falls neatly between your local pub and fine-dining. Doo-Bop Jazz Bar thrives on its ability to provide a singular experience, unattainable anywhere else in Brisbane. DOO-BOP JAZZ BAR 101 EDWARD ST, BRISBANE P 3151 7520 DOO-BOP.COM.AU

PREGNANCY AND YOUR LEGS

STAY AHEAD OF DENTAL DECAY

THE ART OF READING FACES

IF YOU ARE pregnant, have you noticed your leg veins are more visible? There is no need to be alarmed. Your body is going through many changes at the moment, and this is one of them. Producing extra blood to support your baby places pressure on blood vessels, and increased hormone levels will dilate blood vessels further, which may result in varicose veins. While weight gain during pregnancy is normal, an excessive increase in weight can place additional strain on your body, so it’s important to keep active and healthy. Avoid standing or sitting for long periods, and try to walk or stretch every hour to keep blood flowing. While compression stockings may offer comfort and support, these should be correctly fitted and worn with medical guidance. Six months after giving birth, many women say their legs have returned to pre-pregnancy condition. Other women may need treatment and will have to decide whether to delay the procedure or to have it before falling pregnant again to avoid the risk of further damage.

DENTAL HEALTH WEEK, from August 7 to 13, will focus this year on encouraging everyone to think about how they can fit dental health into their busy lives. Regular maintenance and preventive care is key to staying on top of dental health throughout your life, but nothing throws a spanner in the works quite like a dental emergency. In most cases of a dental emergency, you wake to a busy day with a raging toothache and will then turn to any dentist to relieve the pain. Luckily, dental pain is often avoidable by making a commitment to your dental health. Regular check-ups, X-rays and preventive appointments are the best way to combat a minor issue that could turn into a big toothache down the track. Dental decay is a slow process, meaning there is time for early detection. The busier we get, the faster time flies. For 90 per cent of you reading this, it has been more than six months since you last went to the dentist. Make the call today, before a 3am toothache ruins your tomorrow!

THE EYES ARE said to be the windows to a person’s soul, but brows can give you intuitive insight to a person’s personality too. The Brow Bar’s Arch Angels have been trained to look at a person’s facial features and natural brow shape before listening as the client describes their preferred brow shape. Only then will they tailor a brow to suit their client’s personality traits. For example, the size or shape of a person’s lips, nose and forehead gives insight into whether they are flirty, determined or sensual, and a brow can be shaped to complement this. The Arch Angels read their client’s face using the “brow whispering” technique. If your eyes are your most eloquent feature, then your eyebrows are the most animated. By rising or dipping slightly, they completely alter the expression of your face. So integral are the eyebrows to conveying emotions that hundreds of psychological studies have been devoted to them.

HORMONE DROP CAUSES MIGRAINE

YOUR WINTER SKIN CAN GLOW

FACIAL HARMONY AND BALANCE

TWO OUT OF THREE premenopausal migraine sufferers report that their migraines occur just before and at the start of their period. Menstrual migraines have been found to be more severe, more disabling and less responsive to medications than those that aren’t related to the sufferer’s menstrual cycle. A likely trigger for menstrual migraine is the decline of oestrogen levels that occurs during the perimenstrual time around the start of a woman’s period. A headache diary or phone app is a useful tool for recording the occurrence of migraine and the onset of menstruation, as well as information about other potential triggers. There are many therapies for the treatment of menstrual migraine, including acute therapies to abort the migraine attack and preventive therapies to prevent the migraine from occurring. A migraine specialist can discuss the available treatment options to best suit you. Whether you suffer with regular or irregular periods, there are many short-term and long-term treatments available to help you.

THE COOLER WEATHER can be responsible for dull, dry skin, but this issue can be remedied with simple adjustments to your beauty routine. While the drop in temperature will have you rushing to cover up, now is the time to nourish what you’re hiding beneath. Exfoliation is a highly recommended way of sloughing off old skin cells and encouraging new ones to regenerate. Before a shower try dry body brushing in a circular motion towards the heart. If done regularly, dry brushing will promote active skin renewal and assist in the body’s natural detoxification. After your shower and before you dry off, slather on a delicious body oil. A rejuvenating body oil with coconut, rosehip and avocado oils is best to infuse your skin with antioxidants. With your skin smooth and prepped, you’re ready to get a summer-worthy glow. Choosing a natural self-tanning product that replenishes the skin while building a natural, even tan is the best option for a nourishing tan throughout the cool months. Now you just need someone to whisk you away to somewhere warm and glamorous.

THREE MAIN FACTORS contribute to beautiful and healthy-looking skin: texture, tone and volume. Texture refers to the colour and fine lines of the skin, tone is how tight the skin is, and volume is how plump the skin is. The balance of all three is needed for the most natural and healthy-looking skin, and the best outcome in regard to facial aesthetics. Keeping these three in harmonious balance requires specialised expertise and knowledge. Blotchy and uneven texture, often caused by UV exposure, can be dramatically improved with Fraxel 1927 in as little as one or two treatments. Poor tone, caused by low levels of collagen, can be markedly improved with ultherapy treatment. For greater results, a mini-S facelift can provide dramatic yet natural results. Skin volume depletes after the age of 35, and strategically placed volumisers such as HA fillers ensure skin remains lifted and taut. Rejuvenated skin is a balance between these three factors, and speaking with your specialist ensures natural and balanced results.

NAVIGATING BEAUTY

Tahlia Knowles

Meet the Brisbane entrepreneur who created an online community that is changing the face of the beauty industry, writes Emmy-Lou McKean. DESPITE ALWAYS BEING interested in beauty treatments, 22-year-old Tahlia Knowles approached the creation of her online directory, Beauty Compass, with a detached focus on whether there was a market. “I began thinking about an online community that could support local business while getting services done by stay-at-home mums and friends who were doing treatments from home,” Tahlia says. Ultimately, she realised there was a need for an online platform that could showcase therapists’ work as well as help other girls like herself discover new salons and services. After creating an Instagram page almost two

54

years ago and seeing it gain momentum, Tahlia says it became apparent that Brisbane women wanted to know the best places for beauty treatments. Tahlia took a leap of faith and launched an online beauty directory that pointed women in the right direction for all their beauty needs. “Finding the perfect salon has always been a tricky one,” Tahlia says. “Before I committed to visiting a salon, I would scroll through Google, be directed to individual salon sites and have to go back and forth to compare each service. Now, if you hit search, the compass points you in the right direction for all your make-up, tan, nail, lash, hair and skin needs.”

After a successful launch of the website late last year, Tahlia is looking to grow the platform and will soon launch a digital beauty concierge service, Talk with Tahlia. The new concept will see people submit queries online before Tahlia matches them with the most suitable salon or freelancer. “I understand how risky it can be to rely on internet reviews as everyone has different perspectives, expectations and needs which transfer into their evaluations of beauty businesses,” she says. And because no one has time for a bad hair day, right? BEAUTYCOMPASS.COM.AU

DON’T SAY THE “F” WORD This is the conversation you need to have with your beautician immediately. THE THING ABOUT the “F” word is that it is so unnecessary and can be prevented. The “F” word to which I refer to is “fungus”. There, I’ve said it. Fungus and other infections can occur in nails and when applying eyelash extensions in unhygienic conditions. At Brooklyn Beauty Bar, we have dedicated ourselves to ensuring our salons offer the highest levels of hygiene in order to protect our clients. We use a surgical-grade autoclave sterilisation system, similar to that used in hospitals and dental practices, on all equipment, including tweezers,

clippers, and cuticle pushers. All equipment is sterilised, sealed in hygienic bags, and pressurised with extreme heat. This process not only kills bacteria, but also the spores that bacteria grow from. Autoclaving is vital in preventing damage caused by fungus and infections. Each Brooklyn Beauty Bar client is presented with a hygienically sealed bag containing stainless steel implements which is opened in front of them. Many salons will only soak implements with disinfectant, which does not remove all the bacteria.

If you are visiting a salon, for your own safety please ensure they sterilise and autoclave, and insist on checking that the bag with implements they use on you is sealed and has the batch number and date present. Treat Yourself Whether you’re looking to relax or get results, Emmy-Lou McKean reveals the new-wave body treatments worth the fuss.

DERMAPEN MICRO-NEEDLING This technique creates a controlled skin injury by making tiny punctures on the skin with a handheld Dermapen, which stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin. By tricking the skin into healing mode, this treatment will see an improvement in the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, scars and stretch marks. ULTHERAPY Using ultrasound technology, a series of Ultherapy treatments stimulates the skin to produce collagen to naturally lift and tighten the areas that are affected in the ageing process. This treatment requires no downtime and safely assists in achieving a more youthful look. CRYOTHERAPY This hyper-cooling treatment will have you stepping into a freezer-like chamber for three minutes with

DERMAPLANING Also known as Epiblading, this technique deploys a similar technique to shaving and is currently one of the industry’s most sought-after treatments. A razor-like blade is used to remove the top layer of dead skin cells and vellus hairs to reveal silky smooth hair-free skin. The quick and painless treatment is the best form of skin exfoliation and allows your skincare to penetrate more deeply.

the temperature safely cooled to about -140°C. Cryotherapy boosts blood flow immediately and is ideal if you’re seeking muscle recovery and repair or injury treatment. It’s also linked to boosting your metabolism, increasing the release of endorphins and flushing toxins from the skin. FLOATING Although flotation therapy has been around for decades, its popularity as a deep relaxation treatment is only relatively recent. The process will see you suspended in a warm bath-like flotation tank, which deprives the body of its usual environmental stimulation in order to encourage complete relaxation.

The Ultimate Beauty Hack Why your dermatologist is the best tool in your beauty arsenal.

KIM3302

THIS IS NOT an exaggeration: If you’re finding your skin difficult to manage or if you have concerns that you just don’t know how to target, seeing a dermatologist could be the exact thing you need to update your skin routine and start seeing significant results. Established in 2007, Westside Dermatology is leading the field when it comes to advancements in cosmetic and medical dermatology. With an emphasis on procedural dermatology, Westside Dermatology has an arsenal of technology and procedures to treat a wide range of conditions and concerns. As Queensland’s largest group of specialist dermatologists, Westside Dermatology possesses the skills, experience and knowledge to expertly target all your skin needs within one clinic. Directors Dr Manoharan and Dr Lim operate at the forefront of the industry, staying abreast of new technological and medical advancements and offering their clients the widest range of services available. Offering cosmetic services such as dermal fillers through to medical treatments such as UVB light therapy, the team of doctors are able to expertly recommend the treatment you need to achieve your beauty goals. Some of their more popular services include Fraxel Dual and volumising HA fillers. The Fraxel lasers improve skin tone and texture, minimising pigmentation, fine lines,

wrinkling and scarring. Although initially created as an aesthetic tool, new research indicates that it reduces pre‑cancerous sunspots and can help reduce the progression to skin cancer. When performed by a specialist, the downtime ranges from three to seven days. After minimal sunburnlike flaking for a few days, the skin emerges refreshed and revitalised. HA fillers target depleted skin volume, which occurs naturally after the age of 35 when collagen depletes at a rate of 1ml each year. This decreased volume can result in a gaunt and tired look. To lift areas of the face and to make the canvas of the skin tighter, HA fillers can be strategically placed to add volume to the skin, improve skin tone and minimise fine lines. The minimal downtime makes this an attractive treatment to instantly refresh appearance and youthfulness. By exploring different types of treatments, and combining art with science, Westside Dermatology Is able to approach skin treatments in a way that achieves desirable results to suit your skin needs.

Reboot and Resurface

POST-TREATMENT WITH AN ULTRA HYDRATING SERUM.

Combat the winter chill and amp up your skincare regimen, writes Emmy-Lou McKean. THE WORDS “SKIN peel” can sound more than a little intimidating – especially knowing that the treatment will be carried out on your face. But cosmetic peeling is nothing more than a thorough exfoliation that reveals newer, healthier skin. There are many peels available for all skin types and they can assist with myriad skin issues. Best of all, they don’t require any downtime like an oldschool medical-grade peel. We break down what peel will work best for you. ENZYME PEEL The breakdown: Also known as a light or superficial peel, an enzyme peel is made from fruit enzymes. It nourishes and sloughs off dead skin cells to balance your skin. These peels are often referred to as “lunchtime peels” for their speedy treatment time.

ASI Pure hydration concentrate $89.95

The result: The top layer of skin is removed to expose your fresh new skin. Enzyme peels help to control acne, remove blemishes and diminish scars, lines, age spots and redness to leave you with a brighter, softer and more even skin tone. An enzyme peel involves minimal to no downtime and is also effective for sensitive skin types. CHEMICAL PEEL The breakdown: Depending on the strength of the treatment, chemical peels exfoliate dead skin cells and sometimes remove living cells. These

peels are made from various acids, including naturally occurring fruit acids, also known as alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs). The result: After chemically exfoliating the skin, the dead cells will shed and your fresh skin will surface. A chemical peel is ideal for the treatment of deeper lines and wrinkles, hard-totreat acne, large pores and scarring. Depending on the strength, this treatment may require more downtime.

Style My Home has arrived in Brisbane Style My Home is an Australian retailer offering a vast range of stunning coastal furniture, art and homewares inspired by The Hamptons. Hailing originally from Sydney, they are now open on Doggett St, Newstead just near the ever popular James St precinct. And it seems that they have opened in Queensland with good reason. As co-director Caroline May explains, “The Hamptons style is loved by renovators and decorators all over the world but it seemed to be a natural fit with Queenslanders. Sharing a similar climate, coastal backdrop and lifestyle we were constantly receiving phone calls and emails from this region”. Style

My Home was born from the desire to source high-quality products and provide exceptional styling options for those wishing to emulate the luxurious, coastal feel of the Hamptons, but without the price tag. The brand was founded almost by accident as explained by Caroline, “Whilst undertaking a renovation and on maternity leave, the lack of affordable furniture and homeware options in this style for the average family was clear”. And so the sourcing journey began

and the rest is history. “We always try to bring in options which are not only beautiful but also durable with a significant portion of our customer base being families.“ We visited their store this week and were impressed by the range of choice in styles and finishes that will suit a wide variety of modern and classic homes. So whether you are looking to entirely redesign your home, or simply want to add new life to a space, contact their friendly Brisbane team today.
