Welcome
pring summer is my favourite time of year. The chill of winter is replaced with a welcome ray of sunshine and a tinge of excitement about finishing the year on a high. In this SS19 issue, we’re sharing top seasonal styling tips, considering eco-friendly sourcing of products to buy for your home, as well as micro-renovation ideas that won’t cost the earth. We chat to our good friend Chyka Keebaugh (who has just published her second book that you can pick up at Provincial Home Living on Level 1) about her style commandments for the season. Excitingly, we’ve also launched our new Digital Mood Board tool, in partnership with Style Sourcebook. Mood Boards are a great (and free!) tool for you to use on your iPad or desktop to create your perfect space. Better still, you can create it with products that are in-centre right now, ready for you to take home. Welcome to our first Style At Home Magazine from Nunawading Homemaker HQ. We’re excited to share it with you and hear your thoughts on how you like it, plus any ideas on articles you’d like to see in the next issue.

INSIDER knowledge
Interior stylist, owner of Gold Chalk Styling and self-confessed colour enthusiast, Kylie Tyrrell believes a home should not only look amazing, but feel amazing too. Here are her top seasonal home styling tips you need to know!
What inspired the overall look of your home? I love colour and I love natural light. I find natural light to be very mood-altering. So, my mission was to modernise, lighten and make it a bit of fun with colour and art. I am also inspired by travel and the pieces I have collected along the way.
Kylie Tyrrell’s HOT LIST PREDICTIONS 1 We will see more curves and softer, more feminine shapes appearing in homewares, furniture and interiors.
2 Lives are getting busier, so people will want to create a space that’s almost retreat-like. As if designing one’s own home sanctuary.
3 Native blooms in homewares will be big. Blush and sage are huge and lilac will start appearing in linen and soft furnishings.
4 Curtains will make a big comeback as the preferred window treatment!
What’s your favourite space in your home? My office. I love the light and my desk is actually our original dining table. It holds so many family memories for me. I sit at my desk and watch the weather come in – it’s magic! The number one question you get asked about home styling? “How do I add colour to a space and should I hang art in my home?” So many people are scared of colour and artwork but it’s the key to adding your own personality to a home. When styling homes, I often start with artwork before furniture. It’s just my thing! What are some quick and easy décor swaps to update your home for spring? Move your artwork around. So many people leave it in the same spot and never move it but I love doing this! I also love moving furniture around – try moving your favourite armchair into a different space or change the position of your sofa. I also love to bring greenery in from my garden or handpicked from a walk because it adds a little colour, texture and warmth to a room. What’s your home’s personality? It’s colourful, unexpected and a bit eclectic. I love adding drama to each and every room. How do you incorporate colour into your home? It’s my must-have thing. Accessories, cushions, throws and artwork. Killer artwork is the key. Must-have spring blooms? Tulips, always!

STYLING Commandments T H AT C H Y K A K E E B A U G H IS LIVING BY FOR SPRING
What would we find on your home styling moodboard for spring? I am excitedly getting ready to move into our new apartment which we have been building for the last year and a half. I have recently come back from Morocco and bought some beautiful green ceramics for our outdoor area. I’m also excited about some beautiful rugs that we are having made in India and two that we bought in Turkey. My look for this new apartment is really layered, bright and textural. I want it to really be interesting with lots of vignettes and stories. What inspired your latest book? And where can we find it?! My new book has really been inspired by my last 30 years of working. It covers 13 holidays that are celebrated over the course of a calendar year. Everything from Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, Chinese New Year and so much more. Each chapter features how to create a themed table setting, decorating ideas for around the house, menu and drinks ideas plus some of the traditions behind the different holidays. I really loved doing the homework and finding out what different people do as a tradition in their family and culture. The book can be found pretty much everywhere; pick up a copy at Nunawading Homemaker HQ at Provincial Home Living on level 1. The top three spring trends to embrace: I’m absolutely loving that there is colour everywhere at the moment, this to me is such a wonderful way to give your home a brighter lighter look for spring. I love the idea of brightening up

Where do you start when freshening up your home for spring? I just love the start of spring. To me it’s the time to open the windows, give everything a good clean, plant up spring perennials for the garden and outdoor tables, and fill the house with fresh flowers and candles.
CH
Your top Christmas entertaining tips? I absolutely love Christmas and the most important thing is to start early. Think about the colours you want to use on your tree, your table, and your gift wrapping. Make it all work together so that it’s a continuous story. Make sure you put in your diary when you want to decorate your house so it’s actually a fun experience and not a hassle. Make this a family tradition and invite the children, grandchildren and friends to come and help start the festivities. Turn on the Christmas carols, light a candle
The biggest interior styling faux pas you wish home decorators knew? I think that it is probably people who look at the latest trends and feel like they need to use them all in their home when it doesn’t always work. I personally love a home that has its own style and feel and wish people felt confident enough to do what they love and not what they feel they have to. Start slowly and don’t feel everything needs to be done overnight. Your home is a reflection of your personality so make sure it really does feel like you. For example, just because you buy a piece of furniture for a certain place doesn’t mean it has to stay there forever. Have fun moving pieces of furniture around to create different looks and feels, you might end up putting it back to where you started but at least you have tried.
It’s time to move the furniture around, freshen up cushions and get rid of those blankets on the back of the couch. Get the carpets dry-cleaned and give the windows a really good clean. There is nothing better than starting a new season with the house looking beautiful, clean and bright. It inspires you to entertain at home again and to curl up on the couch and read a good book. I like to look at every room and see how I can make it feel lighter and brighter. It’s really easy to do something like this in the bathroom with some new handcream and soap, plus introducing a lighter coloured towel. Or in the kitchen pop a fresh tea towel on the oven and a pot of delicious fresh mint on the kitchen bench. Tidy up the stack of books next to your bed and give the mattress a flip over. I really love doing all of this and in fact, had better go and start now!
IN
If your home had a personality what would it be? Oh wow I’m not really sure... I think probably she would be a gypsy who travels the world collecting as she goes, who loves colour and isn’t afraid of clashing patterns and textures. She is fun, vibrant and has great stories. I really like this girl!
that smells like Christmas and have fun making memories. Start Christmas shopping early so that the gifts are not a nightmare or thought of at the last minute. Create a menu that you know you can enjoy on the day, so you don’t need to spend the whole time in the kitchen. Give your family jobs if it helps make your day easier but give them plenty of time to organise it. This is such a wonderful time of year and it’s really meant to be fun so by being organised, you know this will happen.

my tabletop by using some great new napkins that are eclectic and textured, and adding some new lighter cushions to add to the collection I already have. Bringing the outdoors indoors is a great look for spring with lots of greenery and orchids in great baskets or wooden pots that look great on the kitchen bench, dining table or in the bathroom. My favourite quote is “perfectly imperfect” so I never want everything to look over styled. A stack of magazines that aren’t perfectly stacked, different coloured glassware used as candle holders and always burning a fragrant candle to suit your mood; light and floral for the day and a little heavier and moodier for the evening. Download some new playlists and give your home a music spring makeover too.

“Swap out your dark, heavy fabric cushions and throws for lighter linen or printed cotton in a fresh colour palette,” Carlie says. ”Try milky whites, sage green, duck egg blue and dove grey.”
“Rethink your organisational pieces. You don’t have to hide everything in cupboards. Display your treasured items as feature pieces on a beautiful side table or cabinet,” Carlie says.
Indoor-outdoor living encapsulates the Aussie lifestyle. Cue the indoor tree trend. Create warmth in your room by introducing faux foliage in a unique pot. Perfect for low-light spaces!
There’s nothing worse than settling into bed with a great book, only to have to get up afterwards and turn the light off. Table lamps are underrated, practical and add warm ambience.
“Accent your space with a focal point and invest in a furniture piece that stands out in either colour or shape,” Carlie says. A gorgeous canopy bed is both striking and oh-so cosy.

s the place where food is made, the kitchen is arguably the best room in the house, so it’s important it looks the part. Spice up your cooking space with simple tricks that will make your kitchen look fresh and 5-star for the new season! Make your greens feel at home by bringing nature into the kitchen. Popping some flowers in a vase adds a splash of colour and creates a relaxing environment to inspire cooking creativity. For a bold look, use two colours in one vase or select a variety of flowers in similar shades for a modern, yet natural touch. Experiment with texture by pairing large-headed flowers like sunflowers or peonies with smaller blooms like carnations
or asters. To give your kitchen a subtle but beautiful lift, try adding gorgeous duck egg blue. Effortlessly pleasing to the eye, this delicate colour works perfectly on cabinets as an accent that isn’t overt but brings just the right amount of tone to make a soothing statement. It’s the easiest way to inject personality into the room and pairs wonderfully with white, other blues and greens, or soft neutral taupes and browns. If you’re too tired from redecorating or you’re too busy admiring your glorious new space to prepare a nutritious lunch, you can head over to Big Café at Nunawading Homemaker HQ to pick up a fresh and fast meal that’s equally as delicious.
