JEWEL OF AN ISSUE

I

n true style, beautiful blooms, designer fashion and unparalleled luxury were our inspo in the creation of our cover and fashion pages this month. I’m thrilled to welcome you to our August edition – The Creative Issue. It has been an absolute pleasure creating the mag this month and that comes down to our cherished relationship with Brisbane Arcade who are celebrating their 95th anniversary. The arcade is home to many talented creatives including fashion and jewellery designers, who have provided us with beautiful pieces for our shoot. As you’ve likely gathered from the cover, our sights are all set on the Spring Flower Show themed The Jewel in The Crown, kicking off at the end of August (31st Aug to 6th Sept). Our cover shoot proved to be another example of blossomed relationships, bringing together Brisbane Arcade, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, Yungaba House and Fig Flower Events. As a Brisbane born and bred publication, we always enjoy exploring the streets of our leafy suburbs and this month we checked out Nundah, Graceville, Camp Hill and surrounds. We travelled to the Gold Coast to photograph the divine Ellie Bullen at her beautiful home for My Fave Room (pg 74), and from further a distance dreamed of the azure seas of a Euro summer vacay (pg 81). And of course, it wouldn’t be August without the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival (pg 20). There’s so much more packed into these pages, however in a nutshell, welcome to our always evolving and @styletracy ever creative Brisbane!

here’s no doubt that I’m a Brisbane bloke through and through, growing up in Kenmore’s western barbeque belt where I still live to this day. I got my hands on mechanics growing up, fixing equipment for the family’s farm and restoring old cars – you could say creative craftsmanship has been a part of my blood ever since I could carry a spanner. Since diamonds were in the family business, my father Wallace Bishop sent me to the U.S. to start my Gemological Institute of America (GIA) short term apprenticeship in diamonds and diamond grading once I finished

school. From Israel to India, I travelled the world working with precious gems and rare stones straight from the earth, picking up expert tips and tricks I continue to leverage today. Being a part of my family’s Queensland owned business for 33 years has been both rewarding and significant. The first diamond I cut whilst in Israel was used as a competition piece and won the 1997 De Beers Australian Diamond Facets Supreme Design Award for my design of a 5.35-carat Princess Cut Diamond set inverted in platinum. Six years in the making, spring’s event of the year has a royal touch to celebrate Brisbane Arcade’s 95th anniversary.

B

risbane Arcade’s annual Spring Flower Show has flourished to become a notable city mustsee, from its beginnings back in 2013. Now, Brisbane Arcade’s week-long transformation to a floral wonderland is a welcomed sight to both locals and visitors alike, and signifies not just a new season, but a refreshing sensory reminder of our city’s oldest and grandest shopping arcade. This year marks the sixth Spring Flower Show and has a signature seed to history, as Brisbane Arcade celebrates their 95th anniversary. With that, we’d like to introduce ‘Jewel in the Crown’, a tribute to the iconic heritage arcade. On Saturday, 31st August, the Spring Flower Show officially launches with one of Brisbane’s most exclusive and memorable fashion events - a ticketed runway show under the stars in the Queen Street Mall followed by a cocktail party. Guests will step into an enchanted world of fashion, glamour and of course flowers with the Arcade’s fashion retailers showcasing their spring collections including Brisbane Hatters, Darb Couture, Irma J Smith House of Fashion, Keri Craig Emporium, Maiocchi, Pia du Pradal, Stephen Dibb Jewellery and Tengdahl Australia. 20/20 Optical will also be providing an invigorating look into eyewear design.

With the support from the Merthyr Village community, the New Farm go-to will be back, better than ever flaunting its humble, European charm with a pop-up boutique until the store is ready to re-open in mid November. Known for their cheeses, meats, Italian

Plus, a coffee cart stationed near the Post Office, ideal for a morning brew on the go. Although owners Vince and Maria have been devastated by the tragedy, it’s a gentle reminder of how easily these things can happen, but most importantly, a reminder of how close-knit and supportive the Brisbane community can be. That’s why, as a reader of

Style we’d like to personally invite you to join us in regular visits to the pop-up, until the café and boutique re-opens its permanent doors in November at Merthyr Village. Merthyr Village Centre Manager, Matt Sorbello extended his appreciation to the locals and fellow retailers. “I would like to thank the community and emergency responders for their ongoing support and I’m excited to welcome New Farm Deli back to the village,” he says.

n aesthetic eye can often be overlooked in many spheres, but when it comes to surgery it’s science and art combined. This is where Dr. Eddie Cheng from AR Plastic Surgery has earned his notable reputation and become a key-player in Australia’s plastic surgery industry. A highly respected and sought after Board Certified Specialist Plastic Surgeon, Dr Cheng has over 15 years experience and specialises in breast and body procedures. With a medical base as his foundation, he successfully combines the disciplines of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, creating a holistic approach to the aesthetics of both the body and mind of patients. “I believe everyone is unique and that is something we celebrate here at AR Plastic Surgery. I prefer to avoid plastic surgery trends and focus on restoring and/or enhancing individuality,” says Dr Cheng. The team at AR Plastic Surgery specialise in a range of procedures with breast and body aesthetic surgery their most reputable. This is due to Dr Cheng’s understanding of the impact breast and body surgery can have on the feminine form, both emotionally and aesthetically. Because of that, the journey of these procedures is approached as a team with an aligned treatment plan, structure and overall goals. “We feel recovery and patient safety is as important as the surgery itself. Being a small boutique practice my team and I forge trusting relationships with all of our patients. It’s important to us that our patients feel they can reach out to us at any time during their recovery for assistance and reassurance,” he says. If you’ve been considering breast or body surgery, Dr Cheng and the team from Aesthetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery would like to invite Style readers to an informative evening focusing on breast implant surgery at Westside Private Hospital from 6pm, Thursday 22 August. Dr Cheng also specialises in a range of other procedures such as arm and thigh lifts, liposuction and non-surgical services including skin and injectables to refresh and rejuvenate the face before a special event. “We believe in building lifelong relationships with our patients. This guides our approach every step of the way from the moment you are welcomed to our rooms until long after your procedure is complete,” he says. Hi Daley/Charlie, tell us a little about Ludo, what gets created inside these walls? We create animated shows, TV series and soon we’ll be creating our first movie. Lately we’ve been creating books, toys, clothes and stickers too. Where does the name Ludo come from? We think Ludo means play in Latin and if we’re wrong it means we’ve named our company after a board game. We also love Ludo because it’s our second favourite character in Labyrinth. Goblin King Pty. Ltd was taken. How many employees do you have at Ludo? We have about 50 designers, boarders, artists, directors, animators, editors, production managers and producers. It has peaked at about 70 when it’s gotten really busy. They’re all brilliant people and every day we’re lucky to do what we do together. It also means we have about two birthdays a week which means a new cake every couple of days.

Something people wouldn’t know about the studio? We love what we do but we also work hard. We’ve grown pretty steadily over the past five years. This year we’ve had to move to a bigger space in the AC Drapers building in the Valley. It’s a beautiful space but something people don’t know is that it’s actually haunted. The laughing when you’re in the office on your own at night is terrifying - but it helps us know which jokes are working or not in Bluey.

Bluey into their lives and home. Everyone at Ludo worked so hard to deserve the success but it’s just not something any of us ever expected. We love getting letters and hearing from all the families across Australia who love Bluey. We’d love them to know that we love making Bluey as much as they love watching it together. We also want them to know that we’re working hard to make sure every new part of Bluey, including books and toys are of the highest quality and made with love.

What projects are you working on right now? This year we’ve got four new shows coming out. A couple of months ago we started Season 2 of Bluey with Joe Brumm for ABC TV Australia. Bluey’s just about to launch on Disney + around the world later this year. It’s the only Australian show they’ve got so we’re excited to see if people around the world understand Australian. There’s also our new SBS drama, Robbie Hood with Since1788 and Dylan River. It’s Robin Hood set in Alice Springs. You can check it out on SBS ON DEMAND.

Favourite project to date? A few years ago we had a meeting with Disney in Cannes, and we didn’t have anything to pitch. We came up with a show over a cheeseburger about twenty minutes before the meeting. We thought it’d turn into a real ‘Hollywood’ story and that we’d tell the story of how we came up with the show at our Oscar speech. Anyway, the show was so bad, and the pitch was terrible - and even worse, Disney were so kind about what was wrong with the show too. It’s a favourite because it’s just a funny story of failing really badly.

WE LOVE HEARING FROM ALL THE FAMILIES WHO LOVE BLUEY.”

What have been some of your career highlights? I think it has to be the time the Queen visited the studio last year. She snuck out of Windsor and flew to Brisbane all on her own. It was just to high-five everyone on our Emmys and our first Logie. It was a really magical experience for everyone. We didn’t take any photos out of respect for Her Majesty. What drew you to working in animation/ comedy/digital? It’s all the story and the people. We follow the people we love, who make the stories they love. So far, those stories have been comedy, digital and animation. But we’re just about to start our first feature film and our first hour drama series too. We love The Beatles quote, “If you give me a tuba, I’ll bring you something out of it”. We don’t really mind what we’re making as long as we love the story and the people.

Best part of coming into work each day? Just the lift ride up to the studio where for a moment we think it might break down and we’ll be stuck. The thought that we won’t have reception and we’ll be unreachable for a few hours is probably the best part of coming into work each day. Every morning we cross our fingers.

What does a typical day look like at Ludo? For the past five years or so it’s been pretty common to do a twelve to sixteen-hour day. We love it but we also need to fix this up soon or we’ll die. Our happiest days are filled with collaborating with people we love at the studio. Other days are filled with putting out fires around the place. BLUEY

Stuck in traffic, where does your mind wander? Why did Sizzler shut down? Why haven’t we been back to the moon? What would happen if we just left the car here and walked to work? Just regular people stuff. How does it feel to be a part of the most popular show in ABC iView history? We’re honestly overwhelmed and so appreciative to every family who has welcomed

A Flavour Bomb WORDS BY FIONA WILLIAMS

You may have heard of the team behind authentic Thai restaurants, Phat Elephant, Chai Thai and Asian Republic, but their fresh new creation, Phat Boy, located on level 2 of Brisbane’s world-class mixed-use Brisbane Quarter is a taste of Thai that needs to be on everyone’s list of where to dine next. KHAO SAN ROAD COCKTAIL

PAD THAI CHICKEN IN EGG NET WRAP

T

here’s no doubt Thai food is a favourite amongst foodies everywhere, with classic dishes of Pad Thai and spicy laksa, these crowd pleasers are a sure thing. But if I can be honest, it’s never been at the top of my cuisine cravings – until now. With a mix of sophistication and flavours you simply can’t re-create at home; Phat Boy is spreading the love of Thai culture through their fresh and contemporary-style menu. Lead by Restaurant Owner, Alyssa Phadungkiat, who believes all of us should embrace the little Phat Boy within us when it comes to food, she has now brought her creative concept to Brisbane Quarter after

the huge success of her Thai eatery empire. As soon as you enter the venue it’s already a breath of fresh air on the senses, with well thought out décor inspiring you at every turn from retro neon signs to laidback bamboo light shades. Phat Boy’s space is outside the norm, and the food is no exception. There is a perfection of flavor balancing that hits my lips as soon as I sip and swallow the feast before me. I can tell that months of planning has gone into the creation of Phat Boy’s menu, with every bite a full-on flavor bomb playing with my palate. The delight is in the details from the mixed entrée basket filled with crispy school prawns and succulent chicken satay to the roast duck laksa with the softest noodles I’ve ever sampled complimented by a subtly sweet and spicy laksa sauce. The slow cooked beef rib Massaman curry with sweet potato was so tender it melted right off the bone. In between I sipped on cocktails with lychee, elderflower and ginger notes, but the stand out dishes

that have officially converted me to a Thai enthusiast are the Pad Thai chicken in egg net wrap and crispy Thai noodle with bitter orange glaze. “The Pad Thai is cooked in a turbo wok where the flame is very strong, and this is how it gets its fantastic flavour. The egg net wrapping is very traditional, and we wanted to showcase the noodles in this dish, so the egg net is thinner,” Restaurant Owner Alyssa Phadungkiat says. Finishing on the mango mousse with sweet sticky rice with Pandan ice cream, the flavours were a welcome finale to the Thai journey I had just been hauled along for the ride. I certainly now have a little Phat Boy inside of me, bursting with admiration for this quirky and delicious fare. OPEN 7 DAYS 11.30AM UNTIL LATE. BOOKINGS RECOMMENDED ONLINE VIA WEBSITE. A taste

of Phoenix Chinese restaurant group Phoenix Restaurants from Sydney has burst onto the Brisbane scene, opening a brand-new eatery in the heart of Brisbane Quarter and serving up traditional Chinese Yum Cha and an impressive à la carte menu. WORDS BY FIONA WILLIAMS

T

here are three words to describe Phoenix Restaurant: colour, taste and aroma. It’s the perfect trifecta experienced through every bite of their delicious and carefully curated yum cha and à la carte menu. Specialising in seafood, you’ll find prawns a highlight on the menu, delicately dancing with traditional Chinese flavours and textures. “All ingredients we use are fresh and every item is made in-house daily,” says Phoenix Restaurant Group CEO Anita Fung. And it’s no surprise, with how delicate each dumpling wrapper feels as I bite through to the rich and balanced house made fillings. Treated to ten tantalizing dishes from both menus including yum cha to braised duck, each dish to arrive at the table’s embellished gold lazy Susan was more flavoursome and succulent than the next.

Starting with scallop and caviar shumai, my first impression of Phoenix Restaurant is one of pure sophistication – and that’s not just from the marbled private diamond dining room or the elegant red lanterns that fall from the ceiling. It’s clear that the 20 years of experience from the Phoenix Restaurant Group has gone into this menu, with roots stretching deeply into their Cantonese style cooking. Boasting juicy crab meat xiao long bao, tender drunken chicken, succulent salt brine duck slices, king prawn rice noodle with goji berry, it’s their signature pan-fried wagyu beef in roast sesame sauce that is the masterwork of the menu, simply melting in the mouth. My recommendation? Pair with Phoenix’s signature Shiraz from McLaren Vale for the ultimate feast.

Open 7 days, bookings recommended via phone. 11am-3pm lunch 5.30-10pm dinner Phoenix Restaurant offers validated parking: Monday-Friday: enter/exit between 11.30am and 4:00pm $25 Monday-Friday: enter/exit between 5:30pm and midnight, $5 Weekend: flat rate of $5

How did he propose? When we got the keys to our first home. He took the ring out of the mail box while we were having photos taken with the ‘Sold’ sign. Ceremony and reception venue? Brisbane Racing Club. Describe the location and why you chose it... We were drawn to the Tote Room at Brisbane Racing Club. It’s a beautiful heritage listed building with the tote windows and red bricks. We fell in love with it as soon as we saw it. I also loved the convenience of being able to have the ceremony and reception in the one location and this venue definitely had significance for Zac and I as this is the location where we kicked off our romance at Stereosonic in 2009. Favourite moment? When I was in the car and we were driving straight towards the ceremony. I remember the beginning of the day it all seemed so surreal. It wasn’t until we were driving down, and I saw all our friends and family, my future husband and my beautiful dogs standing there that I actually clicked that this was my wedding!

RING IN SPRING WITH

Spaghetti and Swing

It’s Brisbane Festival season from 6 – 28 September and this year’s program is both boldly Brisbane and gloriously global with more than 500 performances across the city.

A

mongst the many highlights from the program – tantalisingly arranged into three themes: REVELS, REVELATIONS and ROMANCES – is Swing on This, a modern and audacious take on all-time swing classics, from Sinatra and Bublé, to rock and pop hits from Farnham, INXS and The Proclaimers. Starring four of Australia’s leading men of stage and screen including Brisbane’s own Luke Kennedy (The Voice Australia) with Michael Falzon (We Will Rock You, Evita), Matt Lee (So You Think You Can Dance, Mary Poppins) LUKE KENNEDY and Ben Mingay (Wonderland, Hacksaw Ridge), Swing on This is set to raise the roof of The CourierMail Spiegeltent for five performances only 7 – 11 September. To toast an evening of well-swung hits, South Bank’s celebrated The Spaghetti House Trattoria has joined forces as an official Swing on This partner, offering the ultimate pre or post-show pasta-party venue. The Spaghetti House invites Brisbane Festival

revellers to join the party with a 10% discount on their total bill from 7 – 11 September on presentation of a valid Swing on This ticket. Swing On This plays Saturday 7 - Wednesday 11 September in The Courier-Mail Spiegeltent at Treasury Brisbane Arcadia, South Bank. The Spaghetti House Trattoria is open 7 days from 11.30am till late. S W I N G ON TH I S STA R L U K E K E N N E D Y SER V ES U P H I S TOP -P I CK DISHES F R OM TH E SPAG HETTI H OU SE TR ATTORIA MENU. Entrée: Spaghetti House’s Calamari Fritti is my favourite calamari I’ve had anywhere. Ever. It’s beautifully tender and the batter is light and flaky. Main: I can’t go past the Ragu D’agnello - slow cooked lamb ragu with pappardelle. The lamb melts in your mouth and the Napolitana sauce is rich, flavoursome and hearty. Dessert: I don’t often do dessert at Spaghetti House as I’m normally too full from my first two courses, but when I do I always go for the Panna Cotta. Sweet and creamy and sent from heaven. To Drink: I often start with a Negroni. It’s the favourite drink of Spaghetti House owner Claire Parviz, so you know it’s going to be sensational every time. From there I will move on to the Pico Maccario ‘Lavignone’ Barbera. It’s a smooth, dry red which goes perfectly with the ragu.

All new

luxury

Following Rolls-Royce Motor Cars’ decision to move its headquarters from the Gold Coast to Brisbane, Style had the exclusive opportunity to be present during the delivery of the first Bespoke Cullinan, during an event held at the City Winery in Brisbane. Rolls-Royce’s first-ever SUV makes super-luxury off-roading a reality, and is the pinnacle SUV thanks to its unique combination of refinement, comfort and off-road ability.

T

oday, high-riding vehicles are in great demand and are vastly desirable for their stylish design and luxury appeal. Rolls-Royce’s first-ever all-wheel drive SUV is no exception, with the highest levels of craftsmanship, a decadent interior and high-tech sophistication for the most discerning of SUV buyers. “Cullinan, named after the world’s largest gem-quality diamond ever found, is the first SUV offering from RollsRoyce. It is a true off-roader that makes luxury travel Effortless, Everywhere, and takes anywhere between six to nine months to commission, depending on the level of Bespoke requested by a patron,” Andrew Jackson, Brand Manager at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Brisbane says. Cullinan is Supreme Liberty objectified, with many technical features that enable owners to explore new roads and forge new ground. With a simple touch of Cullinan’s ‘Off-Road’ button, the car transforms into a rough-terrain warrior, adjusting the suspension and accelerator mapping settings to suit different grip levels. The 8-speed ZF transmission is enhanced with RollsRoyce’s SAT (Satellite-Aided Transmission) technology, which uses GPS data to read road conditions ahead and anticipate the need to shift gears. This in turn creates a much smoother journey, what Rolls-Royce calls their ‘Magic Carpet Ride’. Cullinan is underpinned by Rolls-Royce’s own aluminium spaceframe, called the Architecture of Luxury and not shared by any other brand in the wider BMW Group. The architecture, which is scalable for size and

52

purpose, sees duty in Cullinan with increased rigidity to handle different landscapes with optimum agility. Luxuries such as heated and ventilated seats with massage functions, a full-suite of driver assistance features and even cutting-edge technology like Laser headlights make the driver’s seat of Cullinan the most comfortable place to be, no matter what conditions are like outside. As with every Rolls-Royce, Bespoke possibilities are near limitless. Choose from 44,000 different colours and paint finishes, or from millions of leather combinations. One can even decide how the seats are arranged in the car! “Cullinan is available in two seating configurations, a Bench format which allows for five passengers, as well as a unique four-seater Individual format that also incorporates a centre console with an integrated decanter and wine cooler,” Andrew says as he explains the car. “Cullinan broadens the appeal of Rolls-Royce more than ever, as it is the perfect super-luxury SUV companion for families and those with adventurous spirits. Take it to the beach, or climb some sand dunes, all in the comfort of your Bespoke SUV.” From producing less than 1,000 cars in 2004, RollsRoyce Motor Cars has more than quadrupled its output to a record of 4,107 cars in 2018. Worldwide demand for Rolls-Royce’s super-luxury offerings continue to increase, and Cullinan is predicted to be a volume seller for the marque in 2019. PUTTING THE

grace IN Graceville

Mother and daughter duo and owners of Hunter & Scout and Botellón know how to serve up great food and even better hospitality. Every bit the locals born and bred in Graceville, Trish and Maddison never planned on entering the foodie-game but the adventure kicked-off so organically, they ran with it.

W

hen seeking a new career path, Trish decided to open Hunter & Scout to let her love for food come to fruition. With how fast great food was becoming a prominent part of our society, it was a no brainer to jump on the bandwagon. From a background in customer service, Trish took the opportunity to provide Graceville with the ultimate mix of a graceful and personal experience with a menu to admire. To add an extra bit of personality into the recipe, her daughter Maddison joined in on the adventure and swapped her nursing knowledge for exciting eats. Hunter & Scout soon grew from a resounding success, encouraging Maddison to venture out on her own and open Botellón Bar in Graceville, both restaurants complimenting each other while expressing

both Trish and Madison’s eye for fashion and style with the interiors finished in luxe detail. Although mixing family with food on a business level can sound daunting, the power duo have made it work and attribute the comfort of their relationship in being honest with each other without feeling the need to tip-toe around the issues that arise. Their relaxed approach to the projects and working with each other is reflected in the ambience of both venues, offering a light, warm and welcoming air as you walk in the door. CREATIVITY, SURGICALLY WITH

M

DR MATTHEW PETERS

any of us have an appreciation for art and design. Whether it be the visual impact or the cognitive challenge, there is something about the creativity involved that we enjoy and I see this in my patients. Pre-operatively I discuss with them in detail how I am going to perform their operation and yet the outcome, when visualised, creates a similar internal response. Plastic surgery, although based in science, is a very creative vocation. A recently retired mentor told me that it is a specialty involving a large toolbox full of acquired techniques – the trick being how and when to use them, and the examples are numerous. From excess skin around the tummy, to the thighs, arms and breasts after massive weight loss, it requires a combination of skin and fat excision, liposuction and muscle tightening to achieve a desirable functional and aesthetic outcome. Breast rejuvenation can also address concerns secondary to gravity, asymmetries, breast feeding, or hormonal changes can involve the use

of implants or fat transfer, alone or in combination with lift or reduction techniques to reposition existing tissues to achieve the required result. Breast reconstruction after cancer can be achieved with a patient’s own abdominal skin and fat if available, but when it isn’t, we have to rely on other options, including silicone implants. Management of a skin defect following a small cancer excision may require a skin graft or a flap, with science determining which would be the better match without causing a functional concern and creativity determining how to hide it. I am very fortunate to work in a field of medicine that allows me to mix science with art and design. Other disciplines have diagnostic and therapeutic machinery and medications while I have a pen, a ruler, and a toolbox full of tips and techniques handed down from generations of plastic surgeons before me. It’s how I use them that is the trick. VALLEY PLASTIC SURGERY 51 BALLOW ST, FORTITUDE VALLEY P 3488 8118 VALLEYPLASTICSURGERY.COM.AU

unfiltered: anxiety

MS SOCIAL BUTTERFLY

I

Brisbane women share their stories about the good, the complicated and everything in between. This month we discuss: anxiety.

MS SCAREDY-CAT COPING WITH MY ANXIETY IS THE HARDEST THING I’VE DONE.”

F

or me, the feeling and emotion of anxiety started at just five years of age. Obviously then, I had no idea what it was; I just recall feeling ‘scared’ but unable to describe what I was scared of. As I grew up, the feeling of anxiety grew with me. But it wasn’t until I was 12 years old that it began to consume me. Fortunately, with the undeniable support and love of my family, I was introduced to coping strategies that included: sleeping techniques, beginner’s meditation, consults with a child psychologist and staying focused on my passions. Coping with my anxiety has certainly been the hardest thing I’ve done. But, I’m grateful to have learnt techniques to combat it so that it never consumes me again. Although I’m confident that anxiety will always be prevalent in my life and something I need to consciously work on, I’m okay with it and have never felt happier or more at ease.

t took me visiting a psychic medium to realise that my partying lifestyle was causing me anxiety. My MondayWednesdays after the weekend used to be unbearable, I would be so anxious to the point of experiencing panic attacks. I visited a psychic (to discuss my future) MY PARTYING but the moment I sat down she jumped straight into my partying habits, which she LIFESTYLE GAVE linked to my anxiety. It was the craziest ME SEVERE experience, I hardly even told her my name ANXIETY.” and she spoke in such detail of certain episodes and dreams I had experienced. The session was almost like a form of therapy for me, I took onboard what she said and took control of my lifestyle. It’s been five months and my headspace is so much clearer.

MS MAKING-CHANGES MY DAD HAS ALWAYS HAD A TOUGHEN UP APPROACH TO LIFE.”

M

y dad served in the Royal Australian Navy and always had a ‘toughen up’ approach to life. I don’t know what the statistics are around the whole nature versus nurture thing, but what I do know is that in the past when someone would tell me they were experiencing anxiety, that line would pop into my head. That mindset has definitely shifted in the past couple of years, though I have had to actively practice sensitivity. I myself don’t suffer with anxiety but a number of my colleagues do and I’ve gotta admit, it’s pretty confronting hearing their experiences with it. One thing that stuck out to me in those convos though was how I can help in situations where their anxiety might rear its ugly head – which is to simply ask, “What do you need?”. Thankfully I haven’t had the opportunity to try it out yet – but one day I might need to.

MS AU NATUREL

MS WORK IN PROGRESS

I STILL FEEL SHAME OVER MY ANXIETY”

I I TREAT MY ANXIETY WITH ALL-NATURAL THERAPIES”

s a Journalist, many people wouldn’t know that my undergraduate degree is actually in nutrition. I studied in clinic for a year treating people for three common complaints: weight loss, low energy and anxiety. Every day I prescribed supplements and solutions for dealing with anxiety; I knew the science down pat, but I didn’t truly understand the human side to it. But my first year out of uni showed me it can really affect anyone. You never forget your first panic attack. I was driving in heavy traffic and suddenly my chest tightened, and I felt claustrophobic from all the cars beside me. My heart was racing, I was sweaty and shook and finally pulled over to vomit. I now understood what it felt like to have anxiety and was unsure when it would hit again. These days, my go-to treatment is magnesium and B vitamin powder, herbal teas and Rhodiola from my naturopath, and I’ve hardly seen anxiety rear its stressful head since.

AUGUST 2019

f you met me, you’d never know I suffer with anxiety. Even some of my closest friends and colleagues don’t know the extent of my struggle. I can just hear everyone saying “oh, here’s another millennial with anxiety…” I can see them rolling their eyes. You see, I’ve felt anxious my entire life and if I’m honest, I still feel shame over it. Even though statistics show that millennials are among the most stressed group in history, I’ve never considered myself one of those numbers. I’m adamant that my anxiety doesn’t change me – I still believe I’m the same person at work as I am with my family and friends. But even though I’m open about my condition, my anxiety is still very much a private struggle. I found it hard to write about it here because there are so many facets to my anxiety; it’s complex, exhausting and unexpected. And that’s scary! Anxiety can be a very lonely condition, but everyone’s journey is different. And slowly but surely, I’m coming to be okay with it.

Tracking oral health

Banishing boredom

What is a Phlebologist?

If you’re like most people, you’re probably keeping track of your health and fitness – being mindful of calories in, calories out and how many steps you took today. But how is your oral health tracking? This is the question being asked during Dental Health Week August 5-11. Launched last year, Australia’s Oral Health Tracker is an annual national report card on the health of our mouths and how this impacts our overall health. It states that 70% of children aged 9-13 years consumed too much sugar and only 51% of adults brushed their teeth twice daily. It’s also alarming to see that from these results, 20% of adults have gum disease. Poor oral health can lead to pain, discomfort, hospitalisation, disease and may affect employment, community participation and quality of life. You can find out more about how healthy we are and how healthy we’d like to be at ada. org.au/oralhealthtracker and if you would like to know your personal oral health status, book a time to see one of our dental practitioners.

Boredom in a long-term relationship can be a typical by-product of sharing each other’s daily lives and can cause serious problems if not addressed. Whilst relationships typically flourish with passion and excitement in their early honeymoon period, those feelings may wane as you settle into your everyday routines. Don’t worry though, there are a few ways to help you get back some of that passion and enthusiasm you first felt when you became a couple. Avoiding boredom can simply be about making an effort to keep things fresh, avoiding complacency, and remaining individuals. One easy way to avoid boredom in a relationship is to have separate hobbies to each other. It’s important to have something for yourself. Having hobbies makes you more intellectually curious and gives you more to talk about, adding interest back into your relationship. This is a good start, but if you would like more help in making sure boredom doesn’t become a serious problem, talk to a professional coach at PBR Coaching.

A phlebologist is a medically qualified doctor who has undergone post-graduate training to expertly diagnose, treat and where possible, prevent any form of venous disease. Seeing a phlebologist means you will get advice from a medical professional who is an expert in all things vein related and receive internationally recommended treatments. These modern procedures do not require hospitalisation, or a general anaesthetic and most importantly patient outcomes are much more successful than old-fashioned surgical stripping. The Leg Vein Doctor is Brisbane’s only devoted full-time phlebology practice and offers a wide range of non-surgical treatment options for varicose and spider veins at their Auchenflower clinic. Dr Nicholas Kemp was awarded a Fellowship at The World Congress of Phlebology in 2018 and has been treating veins for over a decade. He personally guides each patient through their individual treatment protocol and a full year of reviews.

Signature drinks

FIFO lifestyle

Casual suiting

Options abound when it comes to enjoying specialty coffee at your local café. Discerning customers of today can enjoy coffee in numerous brew styles, milk choices and a selection of beans from house blends to single origins. Throughout August, Wolff Coffee Roasters is delighted to be offering a range of new “signature drinks”, crafted to showcase Peter Wolff ’s unique roasting style, transparency of the cup, flavour notes and stories. This includes a delicious blueberry apricot filter batch brew on Ethiopian Gelena Abaya. Or for the coffee connoisseur, why not try either the Espresso Flight or Piccollo Flight on Wolff ’s two unique Haus Blends, Big Dog and Lil Red. Alternatively for those wanting to taste first hand our newest innovation, Instant Wolff, we will be brewing this on a spectacular Costa Rican Volcán Azul. Or perhaps a modern take on the affogato is up your alley, our version better known as the Popogato. Get your taste buds warmed up and extend your coffee palette.

For mental wellbeing, it is recommended to work close to home and our relationships should be typified by quality time together. However, many people have chosen the fly-in fly-out lifestyle (FIFO) that brings inevitable personal and relationship challenges. Discuss the commitment to your FIFO choice with your partner and together, write specific joint goals. Ensure you value this decision, and both agree on the benefits. Consider whether it is for a period of time or indefinitely. Explore how you will keep your connection going whilst you are apart, whether by phone, email, sending photos, watching the same movies, reading the same books or writing notes and leaving them for each other. When you are together, talk about what is and isn’t working so you can resolve challenges early. When you haven’t seen your partner for some time, let them see your enthusiasm for them. Be realistic about challenges so the financial and relationship’s rewards of the FIFO lifestyle can be enjoyed.

Recently, I flagged the sneaker trend becoming more acceptable and mainstream with a suit – not for the corporate nine to fivers, but the more creative industries for a casual desk to dinner ensemble. The fashionistas are now taking this a step further and are deconstructing the formality of the suit setup entirely, by taking the shirt out of the outfit with a bare chest on full show. Guy Sebastian sported the look freshly for the 2019 TV Week Logie Awards and rocked it. In a red double-breasted suit with the sleeves pushed up, a shorter tailored trouser with no socks and a loafer, the look was fresh and contemporary. To take this step, confidence is key. A shave, definition and preferably tanned skin will help you nail this look. Double breasted is the preferred style as it covers more of your body also. For those conservative readers and suit stylers, don’t fret, this is only an idea of what is happening in the world of menswear. For those who love the idea, now you know where to start.

The female body is glorious in all her many forms and Australian label Alisha MARAKI is a textural celebration of each and every one.

G

racing ‘The Next Gen’ runway show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival, founder Alisha Yates designs to flatter bodies with exaggerated proportions. Each garment that wanders the street is only one of fifty and is hand marked with its unique make number to truly be something special worn again and again. With nearly a decade of experience in the fashion industry under her designer belt, Yates has noticed a lack of special occasion wear that compliments all women. Inspired by the hundreds of female figures she has fitted in her work as well as her own body proportions, she aims to eliminate this shortfall by utilising her in-depth knowledge of the female form to cater to the often overlooked fuller bust niche.

AUGUST 2019

From the slender framed woman with wide hips to the fuller busted woman with the small waist, Alisha MARAKI is inclusive fashion that flatters the natural shape of a woman’s silhouette regardless of body ratio. The unique take on the traditional runway sizing has pieces available from sizes 8 through to 18 that are reformed by the brand’s innovative ‘busty’ sizing range. Each exclusive garment is hand marked by Yates and designed to be treasured for its comfort and quality so it can be worn to catch appreciative glances. Alisha MARAKI will be officially launching at the Mercedez-Benz Fashion Festival’s ‘Next Gen’ show on August 28 – a celebration of the fresh, creative and avant-garde artistry that is set to be the future of fashion.

There is also plenty of great coffee shops and cafes, and access to fresh healthy food and markets. When did you move to Palm Beach? We moved back from Bali to our place in Palm Beach in January this year. Why is this room your favourite? I love our kitchen-dining-living space because it’s open plan, bright and minimalistic. I am totally obsessed with our SMEG appliances, especially the FAB50 fridge. It really ties in our bright white theme and also brings some vintage beach vibes. Our big LRNCE vase is another favourite in the room. It was a gift from my sister who purchased it in Morocco for us and it’s really so unique. How do you think your style reflects your personality? Well I really like simplicity, minimalism with a pop of colour, and I think that is reflected in both of my clothing style and home styling. rriving at Ho Chi Minh City’s airport is a chaotic whirl and culture shock. The accustomed humidity of Brisbane is nothing compared to what hits us immediately as we step off the plane. It’s 7am and the city is already pulsating with people, and most notably, motorbikes. There are almost as many bikes as people in this city of 8.6 million and we’re ready to be hauled along for the ride. Driving from the airport to the hotel we’re hit with a dizzying attack on the senses. It’s not just the sight of the motorbikes, but the sounds of horns, wave of sticky heat and most welcoming, the aromatic smells of Vietnamese street food. We arrive at The Reverie Saigon, located in the trendy District 1 area where we’re greeted in the local lingo, “xin chao” (pronounced zeen chow). The Reverie Saigon opened four years ago after taking ten years to build and it now offers an exclusive 60-foot Monte Carlo yacht for day trips on the Saigon River. And that’s only the beginning of the chic features offered by the hotel. The décor is something else with intricate interior details featured throughout. Wherever you walk you’re greeted with a visual feast from the floors to the ceilings, to the walls and even the furniture. Hotel Manager, Christina Von Wrede, gives us a full tour and we stride into the all-day dining room of Café Cardinal where we’re blown away by the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the swimming pool and a Frenchinspired promenade. It’s not hard to see why The Reverie Saigon has been so well awarded, having won the 2017 Conde Nast Traveler number one spot for The Top Hotels in Asia. Each glorious morning started at Café Cardinal, with breakfast bursting with local flavor from wok-fried lobster with black peppercorn and options a little closer to home such as buttermilk pancakes with maple syrup. Champagne was also offered, and we thought

it rude to decline. The indulgent visit wasn’t complete without stopping by the highly anticipated hotel spa where every ounce of stress and worry was melted away during a 90-minute Classic Vietnamese massage. See spaces you’ve never seen before paired with absolute superfluity, a stay at the Reverie Saigon is a true experience of luxury combined with the warmth and quintessential Vietnamese hospitality.

While in Vietnam, Style’s own Paul Johnston couldn’t resist getting out of the hustle and bustle of inner Ho Chi Minh City and escaping to the beach resort of Melia Ho Tram Beach Resort.

itting in the south of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City is a whirlwind of pleasant chaos amidst the smiling faces of the locals, full of must-see sights and must-taste eats. However, just a two-hour drive from formerly known Saigon is the five-star Melia Ho Tram Beach Resort, and that’s where Vietnam really shines. Touted as Ho Chi Minh’s answer to New York’s Hamptons, this go-to retreat is attracting the well-heeled for a getaway that doesn’t miss a beat. After booking into our room 17 floors up and perusing the view, the swimming pool, beach and swim-up bar summoned us.

The resort houses three swimming pools with the main one right on the beach, seamlessly meeting the sand. Cocktails were the order of the day and the Vietnamese know how to shake them. Known as “the place to be” in Ho Tram, we quickly moved onto the Breeza Beach Club, hosting live music, DJs and a menu of seafood and modern Vietnamese cuisine with a western touch. Melia Ho Tram Beach Resort is a reasonably new addition to the Vietnamese coastline housing 152 rooms in the tower with sea views and 61 magnificent villas offer private swimming pools with the very best of

luxury furnishings. To balance out the holiday calories we hit the modern and well-equipped fitness centre. Running on a treadmill with a view of the resort and beach makes working out a pleasure. We couldn’t resist heading to the YHI, a sanctuary dedicated to beauty and well-being. We were pampered for an hour by highly trained local masseuses who really knew how to de-stress - as holidaying is so hard! As the sun set across the East Sea our stomachs yearned for dinner and we spent the evening at the finely decorated Muoi, translating to ‘salt’. Muoi specialises in traditional dishes with a modern twist and the intimate ambience stems from its classic interior defined by dark and earthy timber furnishings and customised mosaic floor tiles. Nearby, you’ll find an awarded “World’s Best New Golf Course”, the Phuoc Buu Nature Reserve and Binh Chau Hot Springs. Melia Ho Tram Beach Resort is an exclusive destination for a romantic getaway, wedding or is fully equipped for a group conference. n the heart of Casuarina you’ll find a resort set amongst palm fringed pools, lush greenery and all the comforts of home – welcome to Oaks Santai Resort Casuarina. Just twenty minutes’ drive from the Gold Coast airport or just shy of two hours’ drive from Brisbane city, you’ll find Casuarina a destination in itself as the perfect staycation. With sea breezes, sunshine and a relaxed atmosphere, it’s just the place to restore balance and enjoy a much-needed weekend away. Staying in a studio apartment with a plush kingsized bed and direct pool access, we arrived in the afternoon and made our way to the pristine beaches only a minute’s walk from the hotel at sunset. In the evening, we opted for a night in and made use of our private tranquil spa bath paired with a parcel of fish and chips for dinner

from Salt Village, about a 5-minute drive away, and dined in our private pool-view patio with a bottle of red wine in-hand. Awaking fresh from the previous evenings wind-down, the morning was spent under the pavilion with a free yoga session by the pool which the hotel offers every week, ensuring the start to your weekend is stress free. The resort is a haven of space and comfort, and after sipping lattes and eating eggs benedict from Salt Village we spent the rest of the day under a leafy cabana by the grand pool and basked in the winter sun – easy to be mistaken for Ubud. That evening we dined at the resort’s onsite restaurant, Spice Den. Dark, moody and lit with fire heaters, it’s the perfect spot for a dreamy date night. From beaches, bike hire, Bali vibes and brides, the Oaks Santai Resort Casuarina is the perfect couple’s getaway or family stay, as well as an idyllic coastal wedding ceremony setting. What’s your occupation? Digital Content & Creative Lead at Howard Smith Wharves. Describe your personal style… Classic with a romantic modern twist. Song on high rotation Leon Bridges – Good Thing Album. What’s the key to your success/happiness? As cliché as it sounds, balance. It took me a while to get there, balancing a career as well as my family. When I have a good balance of both I have learnt things happen just that little bit easier. Sum up a typical day for you… I am lucky enough in my role that no two days are ever the same! There is usually a combo of meetings, a photo shoot or two, turning around images as well as art direction, styling, and getting ready for large and small scale activations within the precinct and the brands that sit within them. I also consult on the side which keeps me very busy. 82

Favourite project you have ever worked on? I have been extremely lucky to work with some amazing brands such as Tiffany & Co, Harper’s Bazaar, and Vogue Living but I would say my current project is my favourite to date. I got to witness Howard Smith Wharves go from being a big dream to now a reality that the whole of Brisbane can enjoy, it’s pretty satisfying to have had a role in it. One fashion brand to wear for the rest of your life? It’s a three-way tie between Zimmermann, Lee Matthews and Ulla Johnson. Describe a turning point in your life… I would say I have had two. The first was when I had my son Charlie. I had him when I was very young and learnt earlier than most how to be driven as well as bring up this tiny person and start a career. The second happened only a year or so ago. I am a natural creative with high energy who always has a million things on the go at once wanting to complete everything to a high standard whilst working myself into the ground. I learnt last year to be gentle to STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

myself both mentally, physically and in my career, taking time to do the things that really make me happy. It is a great idea to be driven to success, but I learnt that all of that can’t come at the expense of everything else.. Favourite cuisine right now? Japanese. Beauty products you’re loving? Mecca In Good Light Tinted Moisturiser, Nars Blush in Gina and Kevyn Aucoin Mascara. Can’t stop watching? Big Little Lies. Where do you seek inspiration from? Sometimes it’s just the way colours sit next to each other, or the way shapes talk to each other or even mundane items in the grocery store. It can be in the car on the way home from work or while I’m sitting in my studio intentionally channelling ideas for a project. My brain never seems to slow down, and I feel like you can find beauty and inspiration almost everywhere, you just have to look.
