ello! And welcome to our August issue dedicated to the Soulseekers. Now, more than ever, we’re tapping into what makes our soul sing and what touches our soul. Think about what feels good for you – is it beautiful music, delicious food, art, serenity, people that make us feel good to be around, being close to nature, or, dare I say, travel? The pursuit of connectedness and contentedness has never resonated as strong for many of us. So, this month, we interviewed the Soulseekers – no, not a 60s soul band, but Brissy locals who have found what feeds their soul (or are on the journey). We kick back and blow the froth off a coldy with Matt Kirkegaard (AKA BeerMatt) who lives and breathes his passion (page 8); we marvel at the determination and commitment of four gutsy female Australian Olympians (page 26); and, of course, we indulge our love of fashion by showcasing some of our fave Brisbane Fashion Festival designers (page 16). Our cover this month satiates our love of food with a beautiful photoshoot at Massimo Restaurant at Riverside Centre. Pasta, parmigiana, and risotto – these words are as soulful to me as lyrics by my fave soul sister, Aretha Franklin. And she’s one helluva woman who has touched my soul for life. Enjoy!

I

truly ate my way around Brisbane this month! From our cover shoot at Massimo Restaurant where we sampled close to the entire menu thanks to chef Davide and owner Michael Tassis, we also launched a new ‘Dine with Me’ series to discover some of Brisbane’s hidden suburban dishes on page 32. I also had the chance to have a beer with Matt Kirkegaard (also known as BeerMatt) on page 8 to chat about his bubbling career since the early noughties. Sometimes it’s those most unassuming that have made an impact on the community! This month you’ll find me at Brisbane Fashion Festival from August 23-25 (read more about it on page 16), and then gearing up for the much-loved Brisbane Arcade Spring Flower Show in early September (page 24).

fter completing a bachelor’s degree in communications in the early 2000s, I found myself frustrated and bored in the depths of a corporate career. This gnawing sense of discomfort led me to start a side hustle, writing about all things food, drink, and travel as a form of creative outlet. In that era, there was an abundance of wine writers – but no one was really writing about beer. I guess you could say I spotted a gap in the market and decided to put myself into it. As a Brisbane boy who fit the stereotype of your typical young Aussie bloke, I had always loved beer, it was just what you drank. But, my passion for the brew really took off when I realised that its fascinating story ran deeper than your average ‘XXXX’ television advertisement. 8

Just as I began to recognise beer’s captivating story, Brisbane’s first craft breweries began to catch public attention and gain momentum. The beers being released were unique and strayed markedly from the traditional lagers that most people were familiar with, so instantly I had plenty of material to work with and write about. Since then, some of my most memorable career highlights have included being named the first Australian Beer Writer of the Year at the Australian International Beer Awards in 2014, and also receiving a Services to Beer Award from the Queensland Industry at the 2017 Beeries. Public recognition is incredibly fulfilling, but I think the most satisfying achievement is having someone who is now a brewer or a craft beer bar owner saying that STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

they were inspired to pursue a career in beer by my writing or through attending one of my tastings. I even had a series of my articles about a major brewer trying to pass itself off as a small local brewery spark an ACCC investigation that saw the brewery fined! One important lesson I’ve learnt from watching the thriving craft brewing industry expand and grow over the years is the incredible power that we as consumers hold in shaping our local economies. Local craft breweries only became possible when consumers started changing their purchasing habits. The livelihoods of local independent businesses that keep our communities vibrant and interesting all rely on the choices we make with the dollars we spend.

under the stars in the Queen Street Mall. “2020 and 2021 have been tough years for retail in the CBD, so our Spring Flower Show will be an important gift back to the community from Brisbane Arcade after such a difficult time,” says Andra Bite, the Arcade’s marketing and PR manager. “It will herald the start of spring and hopefully a happier and more joyful time for us all.” Brisbane Arcade has once again engaged the combined talents of The Event Wranglers together with Fig Flowers, owned by Brisbane florist extraordinaire Lynn Jacobsen, to deliver this year’s floral installation. Visitors will step into a

seaside and underwater world floral fantasy of boats, corals, starfish, colourful sea beds, sea turtles, and more. “We will be working with a variety of florals in vibrant colours to reflect an abundant sea life,” says owner Lynn Jacobsen. “The florals chosen for each Spring Flower Show have to be multi-faceted. They need to be able to survive the duration of the show, look fabulous, and offer variety and interest for the guests. We will be using as many locally grown varieties as we can to support our growers, ensure freshness, and cut down on our carbon footprint,” she says. ROSIE MALONE, 23 – WOMEN’S HOCKEY Hi Rosie! Tell us, how did your preparations change after the Olympics were pushed back a year? Up until March last year we were training full-time for the Olympics in Perth as a full Hockeyroos squad. I remember the day we got called together during the middle of a gym session and told that the Olympics were not going ahead. Initially, it was almost a moment of relief because we were witnessing what was happening around the world, and I guess a part of us was scared about it going ahead and what it would look like. It probably wasn’t until later on when it actually sunk in that after years of training at that point, we weren’t even sure if we would be going to the Tokyo Olympics at all.

As athletes all around Australia headed into camp for the belated sporting event of the year, we dove into the metaphorical pool to uncover the lives, routines, and uncertainties of four great Aussie athletes, just as they touched down in Tokyo for the 2020 Olympic Games. By MELISSA MYRTEZA

@STYLEMAGAZINES

Now that no spectators are allowed to cheer on the athletes because of restrictions, do you think the change in atmosphere will affect your performance? Yeah, I think it will definitely be sad going to my first Olympics and not having spectators and my family in the stands watching on as I’d always dreamed of, but at the same time, nothing has changed for our team. We still want to win a gold medal, we still want to make all of our friends and family proud, and we know that despite there being no spectators in the stands, all of Australia will be watching on. When my mum was giving me one last hug goodbye before we flew off she said, “Now Rosie, know that if you score a goal for Australia at the Olympics you might think it’s only your team cheering, but I’ll be screaming the house down back on the Gold Coast and all of Australia will be sharing that with you.” So, I just try and remind myself of that.

EMILY ROGERS, 23 – ARTISTIC SWIMMING Hi Emily! How does it feel to be going to your second Olympic Games? It feels so surreal that I’m about to compete at my second Olympic Games. With five years separating the two games it seems like a long time, but it has also flown by. Was there a big change in your preparations after discovering the Olympics were pushed back a year? Luckily, being in Western Australia we weren’t out of the pool for too long when the pandemic started. We have had a few changes to the original team that was selected in 2020 but the team has adapted well to everything that has come our way and overall, it has made us stronger athletes.

How does it feel to see a Brisbane legend nominated as the Flag Bearer? I think it’s amazing that this year the AOC decided to recognise both a female and male flag bearer to represent us at the Olympics. It is the direction that the world is heading and both Patty and Cate are two athletes that truly deserve that honour.

ROSIE MALONE

What’s your ultimate cheat food? A Golden Gaytime, I love those things!

Congrats on being named team captain! How would you describe your leadership style? I would describe my leadership style as calm and passionate. I always want the team to feel confident and focused before competing, so I try to pump the team up but at the same time keep a relaxed environment.

What’s the first thing you’re going to do when you land in Tokyo? Open up our second big bag of Olympic kit with all of our playing and training uniforms in it, as we haven’t seen them yet, and for athletes, this is one of the most exciting parts! How do you keep your cool in the lead up to the game starting? I think the fact that we get to stand with our arms wrapped around each other singing the National Anthem before every one of our international games helps keep everyone relaxed and focused. You know that the girl beside you is about to step out onto the field with you and have your back no matter what. It’s a pretty special moment.

Tell us how you got into artistic swimming: I came across an artistic swimming video on YouTube and fell in love with how much fun it looked. I had a passion for both swimming and dancing, so I combined the two skills and here we are.

Any pre-competition rituals? I always have to put my nose clip on a few times before we walk onto the stage to make sure it is on perfectly!

First thing you’ll do when you land in Tokyo? The first thing I’ll be doing is taking photos of everything so I remember these amazing moments forever, then going to eat some Japanese food which is one of my favourite cuisines.

LIZ CLAY, 26 – 100M HURDLES Hi Liz! Tell us what happened after you found out the Olympics were being pushed back a year? I ended up moving back to my family home during the height of the pandemic last May and trained out of my garage for a few months. Once our facilities started to open back up, we were able to get a solid year of training with nearly no interruptions which is very rare in athletics. However, training for a year with no competitions in sight was really tough! Can you run us through a day in the life of Liz Clay, pre- and post-Olympics? Pre-Olympics: 6am: wakeup, breakfast and coffee. At the moment I’m drinking long blacks 8am: drive to the track for training until about 10.30am 11am: back home for lunch or a snack 1pm: weights session at the gym, for usually 1.5hrs 3pm: physio 4pm: home time! Post-Olympics: I’m planning to continue competing in Europe for a few weeks so probably much of the same, just in a different location. The next few years of track and field are huge with a major competition in 2022, 2023 and 2024 at the Paris Olympics. I’ve just started to take my career to the next level, so I want to make the most of being in my prime! That being said, there will definitely be some relaxing, unwinding, and some good food and drink after Tokyo. Balance is key!

How do you cope with the intensity of training? I train anywhere from two to five hours per day, six days a week. Recovery is so important when you’re in a hard training block. Hydration, sleep, food, and downtime are almost more important than the training. I see training as my job now and everything in my day revolves around it. As it’s an individual sport, it is easy to get in your head about things not going as planned, including injuries and poor sessions. I love unwinding with friends on the weekends to take my mind off things. Do you have a pre-competition ritual? The last few times that I’ve run a personal best I’ve had pizza and a glass of red the night before… maybe a correlation?

ELLIE BEER, 18 – 4 X 400M RELAY It’s no question COVID-19 drastically affected the Olympics. How does it feel to be travelling internationally for the first time since the pandemic started? I’m feeling super excited to be able to travel internationally, being the first time in two years. Although there are still some nerves due to being away from my family and friends, I know I will be well looked after and getting to experience my lifelong dream. Especially because we are travelling to one of my favourite countries, Japan! When did you know you wanted to dedicate your life to track? Purely because I just enjoy the sport. I love the feeling of turning up to training and seeing all of my teammates, supporting each other through hard reps with the help of our coaches, Brett Robinson, Josh Carter and Rick Martin. It really is the highlight of my day! I started running at the age of six, sprinting up and down the beach at Currumbin Surf Club. From then onwards, I discovered my passion for running through growing up on the footy field with coach Matt Geyer, to participating in every event on Friday night at Little Athletics at Pizzey Park. I first started proper training with Viking Athletics at the age of 12. My coach, Brett Robinson and I set out a future goal to one day represent my country at the Olympic Games – a lifelong dream of mine. This included slowly progressing through the 400m program and learning lots of tactical cues on how to perform a perfect race plan.

Now that no spectators are allowed to cheer on the athletes because of restrictions, do you think the change in atmosphere will affect your performance? It is definitely sad that there won’t be any spectators watching, but I know the support of the girls out on the track and all my friends and family back home will make me run fast! I’ll be waving through the screen, alongside teammates, Anneliese Rubie Renshaw, Bendere Oboya, Kendra Hubbard, and Angeline Blackburn. Are you concerned you won’t have the traditional Olympic experience because of restrictions? An Olympics is an Olympics! Being able to travel and represent my country with my idols is an experience itself – I am beyond grateful to be part of the team. I’ll forever cherish every moment spent because it could be a once-in-a-lifetime memory. And I’d just like to say a big thank you to everyone who got me here today to experience this dream – I’m lost for words! What’s next for you? 2022 is a very big year for athletics and I’m setting myself some big goals that I can *fingers crossed* achieve! I would love to be able to qualify for an individual spot in the 400m at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, the World Junior Championships in Cali, Columbia, and World Open Championships in Eugene, Oregon. A long-term goal would be to make the Olympics in Paris. So, with these big goals in mind, I will promise myself to train hard, keep positive and enjoy the process alongside my teammates, supporters, family and friends. It’s all just so exciting!

GOOD FOOD MOOD ARTICHOKE, WINTER ORANGE, KALETTE, AND CANDLENUT

Classic contemporary dining and tailored events come alive at Motorwagen Café & Restaurant, under the expert guidance of Head Chef, Callum Rogers.

“OUR PHILOSOPHY IS TO BRING APPROACHABLE YET INNOVATIVE DINING TO THE MIDDLE OF THE CBD.”

Chef of the Year award for WA, did a stint as a future chef ambassador for the next generation, as well as spending the last eight years honing my skills in kitchens across Canada, New Zealand and the UK. More recently, spending time under the tutelage of Nick Holloway at the famed NUNU.

Hi Callum, thanks for chatting with us! Tell us, when did you start as Head Chef with Motorwagen and how’s it going so far? I was lucky enough to come on board as Head Chef almost a year ago now. I feel very proud that I could be a part of the team here at Motorwagen as we come out of the COVID realities of last year and relaunch. It’s been a fantastic opportunity and exciting process being able to develop and grow, as well as focusing on finding our stride as a team and working on menu and dish development.

Tell us about Motorwagen’s winter menu, what can we expect to feature? We hope that customers can feel the stories behind elements of dishes, ingredients and techniques used. A big component of my food and ethos has always been to blend memories and stories together using the absolute best you can get in terms of produce and suppliers. Expect to see dishes like Chris Bolton reef fish, pork loin with our ‘Scottish coffee’ sauce, winter mushroom pan perdu, cumquats with charred juniper and specialities making an appearance such as lemon aspens and candlenuts.

How long have you worked in hospitality? Close to 15 years now. It’s a long-running family joke that as an eight-year-old I asked for a set of knives for Christmas! Unbeknownst to me they were only Kmart brand, and a spoon would have probably been sharper… but I was stoked. Along the journey, I was lucky to receive an AHA Young

You’re dining there tomorrow – what time are you going and what are you ordering? I would sneak a table on a Friday night and order the snack Fraser Island spanner crab slider with lemon aspen, house ricotta, and pickled fennel. Then, share a duck parfait with cumquat, juniper, and brioche. For mains, the Black Angus sirloin,

The philosophy to bring approachable yet innovative dining into the middle of the CBD is one of the statements we use here a lot. COLOUR

“I’M NOT THAT GOOD AT ACCURATELY DRAWING, SO I CREATE USING DIFFERENT COLOURS, BLURRING THE LINES AND BLENDING THEM INTO EACH OTHER IN A HAZY, DREAMLIKE WAY.”

Through muted colours and rough brushstrokes, discover the simplistic beauty that resides in Sydney artist Gabrielle Penfold’s paintings. By ASTRID TAEMETS

hen Sydney artist Gabrielle Penfold paints, it comes from a place of total immersion. Be it the recollection of a recent meal, the memory of a place from her travels, or a conversation with a friend, Gab paints her life in colour. A wash of memories brought together by a mix of colours in rich, complementary tones of browns, blues and pinks. It is this hunger for life’s most simple pleasures that defines her artworks – a bounce between sensuous landscapes and intimate table settings, and the desire to live a life fulfilled by experiences over riches. She is as warm as her brushstrokes, talking of her overseas adventures and family home in the same breath – both being equally integral to her artistic process. “I am really inspired by so many things, and the happiness they bring to my life translates in my work,” says Gab. “There are so many pleasures in life to paint – I never struggle for inspiration. In fact, I often feel overwhelmed, like I can’t keep up with the ideas churning over in my head.” Happiness is the driving force behind Gab’s work, her need to play and experiment with shades and texture are at the core of her subject matter. “I am so attracted to the feeling of joy, 36

each other in a hazy, dream-like way,” she says. Gab’s most recent collection, Oyster Oyster, is a series of works portraying the natural beauty and culinary delights of the Australian east coastline and was exhibited in Noosa’s Clo Studios earlier this year. The almost sold out show (58 of 59 pieces, in fact) catapulted Gab into the art scene as one-to-watch, and, like most promising young artists after a successful exhibit, she found herself in hot demand. Although securing a piece of her artwork is proving increasingly difficult! “I’m having a break to paint for myself at the moment. I’ve been on a hamster wheel ever since I started painting professionally, so I am allowing time to focus on just painting for me, to feed my soul,” she says. And – because we had to ask the question – what’s her favourite gallery in Australia? “Hands down, it has to be QAGOMA.” GABRIELLEPENFOLD.COM @GABRIELLEPENFOLD

SCENTS OF ADVENTURE Sourced globally, but hand blended in Australia, AYU scents are inspired by the ancient Indian healing system of Ayurveda and the study of the revered Vedic scripts. The end result? A powerful and intoxicating concoction of luxurious fragrances, sensual body oils, and so much more. Courtney Frank chats with co-owner, Alanna Quin. Hi Alanna! Let’s start at the beginning. What inspired the AYU brand? Ayu was inspired by Madeleine (co-owner) and my own studies in Ayurvedic medicine. Our frequent travels to India where we came across so many ancient distilleries sparked an idea of how we could create scents with Ayurvedic principles in mind. When we were starting out, there were not a lot of perfume brands out there tapping into the actual effects of scent and wellbeing to the wearer, which really intrigued us. The psychology of scent is a really important aspect of Ayurveda, with a multitude of flowers and herbs being used for many centuries for different healing purposes. We’ve since expanded our range from perfumes through to body oils, candles, face mists, incense, and a hair oil. For those who might not know, can you explain what Ayurveda is? Ayurveda is one of the world’s oldest holistic healing systems developed over 3000 years ago in India. ‘Ayurveda’ means ’Science of Life’ in Sanskrit and is based on the idea of creating balance in the bodily systems, using a whole range of tools such as diet, herbal treatments, exercise, and scent to help with this. If your mind, body, and spirit are in harmony with the universe, you’ll have good health. When something disrupts the balance, 40

|

sickness comes. Ayurvedic medicine believes that every person is made up of the five basic elements found in the universe: space, air, fire, water, and earth. These combine in the human body to form three energies, called ‘doshas’, which control how your body works. It’s been a ‘trend’ in the beauty industry to steer away from alcohols and artificial fragrances found in mainstream perfume. How does AYU differ in this way? We always try to incorporate a sense of balance and meaning to the wearer when we’re formulating our products. THE CAMERA LOVES YOU A picture is worth a thousand words, and when Millie Brandon of M Brand Photography is behind the camera, each picture says, “You are not alone.” By DINUSHKA GUNASEKARA While we all know in our minds that those with a blue tick next to their name are likely to have a Photoshop licence in their back pocket, it still doesn’t help the drop in self-esteem we can feel between double tapping the screen. With bodyediting apps in particular causing spikes in eating disorders, the inspiring work of body confidence photographer, Millie Brandon, aims to help people feel comfortable in their skin, one snap at a time. @mbrandphotography is an ode to the aspects of women’s bodies that are often shunned. “When I post photos of women, it empowers

others who relate,” says Millie. “It makes them feel beautiful and like they can appreciate and love their bodies as well. It’s really powerful when I post a photo of someone with stretch marks on their boobs and people comment, “I see MY boobs!”” While she sings (“terribly!”) during photoshoots to calm her model’s nerves, Millie captures beautiful bodies – real bodies. “Photos are a forever memory. Seeing yourself from someone else’s point of view can be 1. terrifying but 2. incredible, especially when you can’t recognise the beauty in yourself.”

SOOTHING SKIN A new range by The Functional Skin Studio. Known around Brisbane’s beauty scene as The Functional Nurse, Madilyn Wolens has built a reputation based on an enviable natural aesthetic. Although she is a Registered Nurse, her space isn’t just about cosmetics, with Madilyn furthering her studies in dermatology and integrative medicine to build a team of allied health professionals offering both a cosmetic and integrative medicine clinic. Launching earlier this year is Madilyn’s own range of natural skincare, which has become an integral part of many of her clients’ skincare journeys. “I stock a wide range of natural skincare ranges as I believe in reducing my patient’s exposure to toxins where possible. Skincare can still be highly effective

without being full of synthetics and hormonedisrupting toxins,” she says. With lilly pilly, papaya, and turmeric to clarify and soothe skin, to French red clay and Grapeseed oil to balance the complexion, many ingredients have been carefully curated to form the ideal collection for many health concerns. “There were a few products and ingredients I was missing from ranges and needed in my tool kit to help heal my patients’ skin, so I decided to make my own. I’ve worked with a chemist and herbalist to create a range of natural products that nurture and soothe skin,” says Madilyn. Available online and in-clinic. TIGHTEN UP! What you need to know about PDO Matrix Threading with SCinjectables. Matrix threading – sounds intense, right? Well, it’s certainly a little more invasive than a HydraFacial, but it gets results that rival many of the top antiwrinkle treatments with a 30-60 minute appointment. It does this by naturally tightening and firming your skin. Made from polydioxanone, they have been used aesthetically for over 10 years across the world, making their way to our shores in the last three years. In that time, registered nurse and owner of SCinjectables, Su‑en Chow, has been working with threading and seeing incredible results on her clients. So, how do they work? By firming and tightening the skin (which can be done on the face and body such as post-pregnancy) they stimulate the production of collagen that decreases as we age. They’re naturally absorbed by the body and dissolve over time creating a firming effect for 9-12 months depending on your

skin type. If you’ve ever worried about an overdone look with dermal filler, threading is a great option as it relies on your body’s own collagen production. “It’s not about filling your skin out, it’s about tightening it up,” says Suen. “Many people want that instant gratification from dermal fillers, but it can create unwanted volume in many places. For many of my clients with compromised skin tightness, threading is a fantastic way to bring life back naturally and subtly into your skin whilst still looking like you,” she says. When I think of CrossFit, I think of ripped bodies that wouldn’t be out of place on Ninja Warrior. Meanwhile, my body is built for Wipeout, so when I found myself at Windsor’s home of holistic fitness, I felt fear deep in my feeble core. SiSU offers a unique combination of physical training alongside rehab and wellness programs, but it was the group classes I had my eye on with their 7-day free trial up my sleeve. With absolutely zero experience behind the barbell, I was ready for a disaster in their CrossFit, Move 45, and Essentials classes. And yet… The exercises were definitely challenging and sweat inducing, but under the

expert eye of the spirited coaches, I knocked out more fitness goals in five days than I ever had in years of wandering through the gym. However, that wasn’t what sent my endorphins through the roof – it was the devoted energy of a welcoming community who truly wanted to help me achieve my best. Every squat, every lift, and every step were met with cheers, and I felt so damn proud, leaving every session more fulfilled than the last. P.S. SiSU is dog-friendly too! AROUND 40% OF WOMEN BY AGE 50 WILL SHOW SIGNS OF HAIR LOSS – dermnetnz.org

It’s time to stop whispering about female pattern hair loss.

F

or many women, our hair is our crowning glory. Deeply connected with ideals of femininity and youth, it is often one of the most important ways we express ourselves aesthetically, and for some, culturally. How we style it often makes a statement about who we are. Now, imagine looking in the mirror and not understanding why you’re losing your hair. We’re talking about a condition called Androgenetic Alopecia, which in women presents as Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPHL). It looks different to our male counterparts; it presents as a thinning of hair on the scalp due to increased hair shedding or a reduction in hair volume, or both. The hair becomes thinner all over the head, and the hairline does not recede. It is normal to lose up to 50-100 hairs a day. So why is FPHL such a taboo subject? We now talk openly about

cosmetic procedures, injectables, and anti-ageing treatments, but oddly, many people still think of hair loss as something that only affects men. It can feel scary to admit we need help with our thinning hair. It can make us feel vulnerable or even embarrassed, even with friends and family. My youngest daughter suffers from stage one FPHL, so it’s a personal journey that I’m familiar with. It’s why I’m interested in treatments in this space, which are often divided into two categories: medications or surgery. But, it’s micrografting that has me excited, and the results are there to see. I’m talking about Regenera Activa, which is quickly being recognised all over the world by the medical community. A consultation with us at The Skin Lab will be able to tell you why you might be losing your hair, and if Regenera Activa will be suitable for you. It is a minimally invasive procedure that takes AUGUST 2021

micrografts from existing healthy follicle stores, usually at the back of your scalp, from which ‘progenitor cells’ are extracted. These cells are then broken down into injectable form and reimplanted into areas of hair loss. A highly-trained hand is needed for the treatment which is why it is performed by myself as the Medical Director and Founder alongside my highly trained team. It’s easy to book, there’s no obligation, and Medicare rebates apply for your initial consultation. Together let’s start learning more about who it affects and why, and slowly start working together to break down the barriers of social acceptance. PRICING STARTS AT $3,000 AND THE SKIN LAB IS OFFERING A $300 GIFT VOUCHER FOR THOSE WHO BOOK AND PAY FOR THEIR TREATMENT BEFORE DECEMBER 31 2021. CONDITIONS APPLY. OUR HEALTH, OUR TERMS,

OUR TIME

A deeply personal experience led Aussie entrepreneur, Nicole Liu, to become the founder of a startup that would quickly change the discourse around women’s reproductive health. By ANGELICA SILVA

I

t’s a Saturday morning and you’re on your way to your local pharmacist to pick up a repeat of your contraceptive pill. You wonder the same thing all women have at one point in their lives: why is getting the pill still such a time commitment? After all, we’re career-women, we’re more educated nowadays, and we’re also leaders. Times have well and truly changed, and modern women deserve better access to quality healthcare – they deserve to be back in control of their bodies. This is exactly the mentality Nicole Liu had when she founded Australia’s first online contraceptive pill prescription service, Kin Fertility.

Hi Nicole, what inspired you to start Kin Fertility? When I was 24, I was misdiagnosed by a doctor with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). I was told I was going to be infertile (in those words!). I wasn’t even sure that I wanted kids at that time, but to feel like I didn’t have the option was really scary. When I went to a fertility specialist to understand more, they told me that in fact, my results didn’t show I had any indication of PCOS. When something like this happens to you, the strangest thing to hear back is, “me too”. But that’s exactly what happened. My friends started talking about how they knew people that went through the same thing, how after at least 10 consults, they were diagnosed with Endometriosis and more. This experience showed me that there continues to be a stigma attached to women’s reproductive health. And that in turn, was leading to people suffering in silence and isolation. So, I decided to do something about it. That’s when I started working on Kin. How exactly does Kin work? Our main offering is a subscription service to the contraceptive pill, delivered to your door. It gives women safe and convenient access to doctors online, and the contraceptive pill. You start the process of Kin by filling out our online questionnaire, where you answer some questions about your health and brand preferences. Next, we organise an online textbased consultation with an Aussie GP to get your prescription plan. After this, we get to

work on shipping your pill to your door, on time, every time. No more last minute runs to the pharmacy and no more waiting rooms – simple, the way it should be. What more do you think could be done to make the discourse around women’s reproductive health more inclusive and approachable? SO MUCH. It’s a big cultural shift that we need to make. I would love to see better and more education about our reproductive health earlier in our lives. For example, let’s have better sex education that doesn’t just involve a banana and some condoms. Let’s actually talk about how contraception works and how fertility changes with age and lifestyle earlier in life. Let’s not be reactive about that. I would love us to actually start investing in better solutions. Why does it take an average of six to 10 years to be diagnosed with Endometriosis, when one in 10 women have this condition? We need more investment into research and development when it comes to reproductive health. We need to invest more into companies that are trying to fix problems in this space. There’s honestly so much to do! And every bit will count. FIND OUT MORE AT KINFERTILITY.COM.AU. AND CHECK OUT THEIR OH-SO AESTHETIC IG POSTS ON @KIN.FERTILITY.

Breathing meditation

Does sclerotherapy hurt?

Begin with a nice and slow deep breath into the body. As you exhale, let go of any tension. Without changing the natural rhythm of your breath, bring your attention to the area just below your navel. Notice the different sensations that are stimulated each time you breathe in and out, and keep your attention on the rise and fall of your abdomen. The body only dwells in the present, and the moment you are aware of the sensations in your body, you are in the present. If your mind wanders away into thoughts, bring your awareness back to the present – without any judgement, simply return to the rise and fall of your abdomen. With your mind focused on the present, rambling thoughts calm down for you to experience stillness and peace. Continue to focus on your abdomen, allowing the mind to rest with the rising and falling of the breath.

It’s a frequent question at our clinic. And because each person has a different pain threshold, it’s difficult to give a precise answer. But here are three points that might help expectations: 1. The needles used in sclerotherapy are very fine. They are a slightly larger gauge than acupuncture needles but much finer than vaccination needles. 2. If the needle tip is not accurately placed inside the lumen of the vein, the injected sclerosant (rather than running through the vein as it should) spills outside the vein and causes the tissue to expand. This will cause pain in the same way as a boil does. Small amounts of spillage will always occur, but skilled sclerotherapists pay meticulous attention to this aspect of treatment. 3. F inally, some areas of the leg tend to be more sensitive than other areas such as just behind the knee and around the ankle. We always use the finest needles possible when injecting in these areas and select sclerosants that are least likely to cause pain so you can rest assured that you are in good hands.

As the name suggests, the HydraFacial is the ultimate hydrating refresher for your complexion. It’s a completely non-invasive treatment that eliminates impurities such as dirt, oil, dead skin cells, and clogged pores, replacing them with a rejuvenating burst of antioxidants, peptides, and skin-quenching hydration. It’s one of the most effective ways to transform the appearance of your skin, and is hands down our most popular treatment at The Skin Lab. Benefitting all skin types, the HydraFacial works wonders for any age. In the first stage, effects from the sun, pollutants, and general wear and tear across the top layer of your skin is dissolved away, effectively eliminating the damage your regular exfoliator can’t touch. Better yet, the results improve with time. Because HydraFacial vacuums out excess oil and congestion, your skin gets a much-needed break, allowing it to reset and restore its natural oil production, resulting in a happier, healthier, glowing complexion. PROPERTY, DELIVERED DIFFERENTLY Exclusively Managed with Samantha Eason. By FIONA WILLIAMS

W

While many property managers out there TALK THE TALK when it comes to great connections, Exclusively Managed don’t just talk about it, they are ABOUT IT!” 48

|

hether you’re a property investor or a seasoned renter, chances are you’ve had your fair share of experience with property managers. Some would argue that they are even more important than the property itself! From keeping properties competitive, clients happy, and enhancing profitability, they are an important resource and the glue that holds it all together. Samantha Eason knows this all too well. Starting her career in construction, her specialty sits between understanding the importance of managing projects and most of all, people. Going out on her own in 2019 after cringing at how other businesses handled the industry, Exclusively Managed was born. A boutique agency based in North Brisbane, their philosophy is all about the harmony between client, customer, and the property itself. A smart property manager knows that a happy tenant is more than just a renter – they equal a long-term return on investment properties. Sure, it may take a bit of extra effort to create the environment for a conducive relationship, but it’s exactly why Exclusively Managed is worth its weight in gold. “I’m found to go above and beyond, which usually involves a little bit more work but it works out in the best interest of the client and customer,” says Samantha. While many property managers out there talk the talk, when it comes to great connections, Exclusively Managed don’t just talk about it, they are about it! “Whilst other agents say they are, I am focused on the relationship built with both my customers STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

@STYLEMAGAZINES

and clients,” says Samantha. “It’s all about being fair and reasonable on both sides. It’s bigger than just defining fair wear and tear at the end of a tenancy, and how the property was presented when someone first moved in – it’s the whole picture. Well-kept rentals are one of the things that I know from working with other agents that I do very differently,” she says. Many of Exclusively Managed’s client’s investment properties are a significant financial commitment, and their valued asset must be cared for in order to maximise its worth. From Samantha’s eyes, it’s a no brainer that a happy tenant is far more likely to look after a property with due care and consideration than someone who is dissatisfied. So, it makes sense to look after both parties’ interests professionally and pleasantly. Being a personalised agency means that they don’t only manage the property uniquely, everything is personalised – even down to the advertising. “Recently we leased a twobedroom property in Toowong and it is achieving the highest rent in the complex and competing with a three-bedroom. It’s not just the effort that you put in but the results. We are experts in property management,” says Samantha. North Brisbane may be where the team are based, but it certainly doesn’t stop them from servicing clients all around Brisbane and beyond, from Upper Coomera to Karana Downs. “We have grown over the last 12 months where we can provide exceptional service whilst still getting positive results for our client’s investments,” says Samantha.
