Hello, and welcome to our Fashion Issue. The team have been busy putting the final touches on this edition of Style, after all, fashion is our true love. On the cover, we feature Wintergarden – this shoot is all about embracing the unexpected and it seriously has me wanting to wear all my blazers backwards.
Inside, enjoy 13 pages of exclusive interviews with fashion leaders like Silk Laundry Founder Katie Kolodinski and Charlotte Brodie, who is behind By Billie (the home of cool kids’ clothes), a fantastic write-up on the best curated shopping destinations in Brisbane, and of course a number of fun fashion edits (thank us later). My favourite part? All the brands we have highlighted are Australian.
We also spoke to nine industry leaders as part of our Men of Brisbane feature. Hear from homegrown heroes such as Adam Flaskas, who is behind HSW, Alexander and William Bishop, and Epic Hair Designs Founder Brendon Mann.
I have also put together a home edit inspired by our office move (yes, that’s right, you’ll now find us in the leafy suburb of Kelvin Grove). On that note, happy reading!
TRACY SINCLAIR EDITORMy fave edition, aka the Fashion Issue, is here and she’s a doozy! I had an absolute ball shooting our cover shoot with Wintergarden – it was the perfect winter’s day, the city was bustling, and the fashion was out of this world (srsly, head to page 12 for some unexpected yet mindblowing looks).
Inside, we chatted to renowned stylist Sara Hatten-Masterson, up-and-coming photographer Luke Sartor, and talented local makeup artist Tanielle Jai on how to ace the new latte makeup trend at home. I also spoke to BEDA’s CEO Anthony Ryan about how he plans to launch Brisbane on to the world stage with his new initiative Better Brisbane Alliance. Until next month!
DEPUTY EDITORBeginning her fashion career in 2005, Sara Hatten-Masterson quickly fell in love with helping people find their joy through shopping.
She loves knowing that her clients are able to have an enjoyable shopping experience with her by their side, and that she’s able to help them discover what pieces work best for them, so that shopping on their own becomes less of a frustrating experience.
“How we dress and present ourselves has such an incredible impact on everything else we do,” Sara says. “That moment when someone looks in the mirror and truly sees themselves in a new way can be very emotional and intensely rewarding for me.”
Sara says she draws inspiration not just from Brisbane’s very own unique style and aesthetic, but also from the resilience, determination, and discipline of her daughters, and the many other people she crosses paths with day-to-day.
With so much variety in what she does, Sara has experienced so many special moments with clients she’s worked with
during a styling session, and she finds it especially wonderful when they see themselves dressed in an outfit they never imagined themselves wearing.
Of course, Sara hasn’t just worked with styling clients one-on-one, she’s also worked in Uluru with a group of local women on a runway show, and both styled and hosted events and workshops for Westfield.
Being on the pulse when it comes to fashion trends is an incredibly important part of Sara’s work, but she says that when it comes to trends in 2023, she’s loving that there aren’t really any specific trends to follow.
“I love the current freedom with trends in that you can really make anything you love feel modern and ‘on trend’,” Sara says.
“For my clients, I am loving that the trend of a fabulous dress for any occasion, has made finding the perfect dress so achievable.”
In her spare time, you’ll find Sara spending quality time with her family, whether that involves a Sunday night dinner, a beach trip or simply relaxing at home with a good book or TV series.

Elevate your fashion game at Wintergarden – just in time for the new season. C’mon, we dare you!
It’s almost time to shed those winter layers and embrace the sunshine with a plethora of spring summer fashion finds; and what better way to welcome a new season than with a wardrobe shake up. If you’ve been in a style slump lately or in the past have struggled to transition your clothing between the seasons, there’s no better time to hit the ‘refresh’ button on your wardrobe. With a few key pieces and some unexpected styling tips, your fashion game can be re-invigorated with ease.
And what better place to stock up on sleek new-season must-haves than Wintergarden in the heart of Queen Street Mall. The shopping mecca boasts an impressive line-up of Australian and international designer brands that are both affordable and stylish such as Veronika Maine, Cue (their new lilac collection is *chefs kiss*), SHEIKE, COS, Zara, DISSH, Seed Heritage, Nine West, H&M, lululemon, and Dinosaur Designs (there’s also a wonderful variety of men’s fashion brands, such as M.J. Bale, Peter Jackson, Aquila, and R.M. Williams to name a few).
On that note, here’s how to embrace the unexpected this spring summer with Wintergarden.
You can never go wrong with a head-to-toe monochrome look – it’s chic, sophisticated, and eye-catching. Now, every busy city gal needs a tailored suit in their wardrobe, and Cue have just dropped an incredible lilac range featuring a stunning suit (check it out on page six). We’d recommend pairing it with lilac heels for a head-to-toe monochrome look, or a pair of silver slingbacks for a more urban, edgy look. And while this may not be for everyone, if you want a look that’s street-style worthy (and you’re feeling extra daring), why not have a little fun and give the ‘wear your blazer backwards’ trend a go!
The dress-over-pants trend has been everywhere this year, but have you ever considered layering two skirts together? It’s the latest craze sweeping the fashion world and it’s surprisingly easy to pull off. The trick to layering skirts is to pair them in differing lengths and textures. For example, here we’ve paired a COS pleated skirt with a more structured wrap skirt from Zara. The results? Mind-blowing! Who’s ready to give it a try?
Mixing and matching textures, prints, and colours is an effortless way to spice up your look – not to mention, it’s definitely one of the easiest fashion trends to incorporate into your existing wardrobe. Some combos we love are silk and denim, suede and faux leather, and knitwear and metallic. Need some inspiration? See how we styled this DISSH denim vest with a fringed black midi skirt from Zara, and glittery knee-high boots – all available at Wintergarden, of course. Not your vibe? We’re also crushing on Veronika Maine’s Citrine Wave set, which we paired with a cropped, boxy white button-up shirt (pictured on page four). You’ll be mixing and matching like a street style pro in no time!
Metallics are having a huge comeback this year, specifically metallic silver. Not only is silver jewellery on the rise, but we’re also seeing it in our clothing and accessories –there’s something so fun and edgy about adding a little metal to your ensemble. Just remember, the trick to pulling off this trend is to not overdo it. When incorporating bolder metallic items like shoes, a bag, or clothing, opt for more minimal jewellery pieces. We’re also seeing this trend in the beauty world, so don’t forget to stop past Mecca Maxima for some added flair to your beauty regime.
WINTERGARDEN
Meet the founder and designer of Katalyst, a Brisbane-based fashion label that produces elevated wardrobe staples through high technical execution, experimental textiles, and abstract ideas. Let’s dive in to her artistic world!
By LAUREN PAYNE1 . My signature scent is The Beat by Burberry.
2 . High up on my fashion bucket list is a pair of square toe boots from Fidan Novruzova. I love a chunky shoe with a unique silhouette.
3 . My favourite go-to shoes are my Camper Kaah Clogs in Black.
4 . My favourite interior décor piece is a ceramic piece by Tom Summers. It was a limited-edition piece from a few years ago.
5 . Some of my favourite pieces from my own label are the Bias Dress in Chocolate Plaid Wool Blend, the Handkerchief Top, and the Raglan Dress Shirt.
6 . My top make-up essentials are the Natio Pure Mineral Skin Perfecting BB Cream, Natio Lipstick in Kiss, Natio Long Lasting Lip Liner, and Aesop Proactive Lip Balm.
7 . My fashion muse is Jamie-Maree Shipton, an Australian stylist living in London. I’ve always been inspired by the way she uses colour, texture, and unexpected shapes.
8 . My favourite fashion brands at the moment are Maison Margiela, Our Legacy, and Base Range. They all have such thoughtful use of fabrics and reference something familiar, but twist it around to create pieces that feel off kilter and unique.
With function and form at the forefront of every considered design, Silk Laundry’s Founder Katie Kolodinski exemplifies that simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.
By ASTRID TAEMETSHi Katie, tell us about yourself:
I’m Australian-Canadian; I have spent half of my life living in Canada, the other half in Australia, and now I am in Spain for tapas. I’m the Founder and Creative Director of Silk Laundry, which I started in 2015. I am also a mother of two children and one adopted cat.
How was the brand born?
I started Silk Laundry almost by accident – it came out very organically through my passion for beautiful things and quality design. I’ve always had a preference for natural fibres over
synthetics as they feel better on the skin, are better for you, and are for the most par t, better for the environment. I wanted to create beautiful clothes that were uncontrived and well made.
To me, the silk slip dress was the most perfect item, and has been a constant in my wardrobe since I was a teen, and that’s where Silk Laundry began.
I started with five pieces I thought were essential to most wardrobes in just three colours. The 90s slip dress was in this first collection and has remained ever since.
Describe the brand: Classic, conscious, functional, practical, supreme, tactile, uncontrived, and real.
What inspires you most?
My inspirations change all the time depending on what I am researching. This year, my personal inspirations were people like Australian artist Miranda Skoczek, veterinarian and conservationist Chloe Buiting (Jungle Doctor), tribe women I had the pleasure of meeting in Vietnam on a trip with textile seekers, and my Ukrainian friends who are suffering so much yet are staying strong. When it comes to designs, much of my inspiration comes from the interplay of beauty and chaos found in the natural world. I often compare my creative journey to the formation of a pearl within an oyster.
How would you describe your personal style?
My style is a reflection of my values – practical, uncontrived, and non-restricting, but at the same time I have always shopped with intention. I have pieces I have owned for years that I cannot see myself parting with.
What is your everyday uniform?
I have just moved to Spain and it’s hot this summer. I am wearing a lot of easy dresses I can just slip into and matching sets where I don’t have to think too much when getting ready in the morning. Some type of flat shoe or sneaker as we are car-free and walking everywhere.
What is your favourite Silk Laundry piece?
A slip dress, always.
Elaborate on your sustainability practices:
To me, sustainability is not just a practice, but a guiding principle that influences our everyday actions. It means taking responsibility for our impact on the environment, society, and future generations. Prioritising the wellbeing of our planet, I make conscious choices, such as refusing plastic-wrapped produce, shopping locally, and avoiding single-use items where possible. I love composting and have had worm farms for our family food waste. Education is key, as I advocate for change through engaging with local governments. Ultimately, sustainability is driven by my desire for a decent future – one where my children and all the little people on this planet can thrive.
What attracts you to the materials you work with?
I love how comfortable everything feels. The slip dresses have become like my second skin, and it’s my go-to for work, dinners, and parties.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? Never say no to an invitation.
What’s next in-store for the brand?
That’s a surprise!
Dust off your cowboy boots and head beachside because the latest social media aesthetic will have you lusting for a laidback lifestyle. Boho-inspired with a touch of western, here’s how to shop the coastal cowgirl trend that has captivated the internet, led by the likes of Kendall Jenner.

TULIP BOUTIQUE SHOP 15 MILTON VILLAGE, 36 BAROONA RD, MILTON P 3369 8978 TULIPBOUTIQUE.COM.AUFashion is all about curating your wardrobe but what about the spots that have done the hard yards for you? We chat with the owners of SWOP Clothing Exchange and The Curated Market to find out what it’s like to always be on the hunt for killer styles and brands.
By TEAGAN WITHEROWSWOP Clothing Exchange (aka, where style meets substance) is a pretty amazing op shop. Vintage diehards will tell you this is the place to go and they’re not wrong! SWOP takes op-shopping to a whole new level with some of the best pieces around. Don’t believe us? We recently checked out the West End store and left with a vintage Prada skirt in hand – need we say more? What’s their secret? How do they have such an amazing array of clothing and accessories? Well, we sat down with vintage dealer and SWOP Director, Brigid Gordon, to find out!
How did SWOP come about?
The inspiration came from the clothing exchange culture of North America. We saw a lack of these networks in Australia as an opportunity and in 2013 opened our very first brick-and-mortar clothing exchange in West End, Meanjin/Brisbane.
Tell us about the process of sourcing vintage at SWOP…
How we get 100 per cent of our stock in our Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane stores is by offering a same-day buying and exchange service and purchasing items directly from our customers, offering an alternative to traditional consignment stores. You either receive cash or store credit on the same day you drop your items off.
What’s your favourite piece you’ve ever found?
My current favourite item is an archive Miu Miu 1999 brown suede belt bag that I picked up at our Collingwood store, which I’ve loved using whilst travelling through Europe.
What type of brands and styles can shoppers expect from SWOP?
At the moment, we are finding brands and styles that are in demand are Y2K Diesel, Cop Copine, and Marithe Francoise Girbaud, as well as staples like perfectly worn vintage Levi’s 501s and 90s black leather jackets.
Have you ever fallen in love with someone else’s style and wished it could be yours?
(Honestly, who hasn’t?) Well, much to the delight of many, Rachael Anger has actually turned that dream into a reality with The Curated Markets located on Vernon Terrace, held every six weeks. Shoppers get the chance to browse through pre-loved fashion from a bunch of Brisbane’s most stylish sellers and influencers. Plus, you get to do it all guilt-free, knowing you’re shopping sustainably and giving pre-loved fashion a new life.
We knew Rachael would have some amazing insights, so let’s take a look at what’s involved.
Give us a little backstory on The Curated Market…
I work as Event/Operations Manager at the salon space where the market is held and we were approached by Rachael Armstrong of Arkae Brisbane with the idea. I worked closely with Rachael throughout the first couple of markets, until her other creative pursuits pulled her in another direction. So, now I’ve taken over running the market myself and I couldn’t be more grateful.
What’s involved when co-ordinating the market?
It is actually quite a mammoth task! Co-ordinating sellers, organising load in and load out, all social media and marketing, and general admin. I could go on and on...
Wow, it sounds like quite the task! Tell us how do you discover sellers?
Mainly through Instagram. It’s invite-only, but we are always open to DM’s if people think they would be suitable!
Describe your ideal seller and why?
Someone with a killer sense of style and a strong love of fashion (with a wardrobe to match!).
What type of brands and styles can shoppers expect?
High-end and high-street brands, often current or last-season styles.
Minimal, comfy, and oh-so dreamy, here’s a first look at By Billie’s new collection, Bisou Bisou.
By KATHRYN EDMONDSWhat began as a creative escape during early motherhood has now grown into a thriving business for this mum of three. We sat down with Charlotte Brodie, founder and creative director of leading Australian baby and women’s clothing brand By Billie to learn more about her label and her latest collection.
What was the driving force behind By Billie?
I launched By Billie in early 2018, just a few months after my daughter Billie was born. My husband and I had just packed up our lives in Brisbane and made the move six hours south to his hometown of Crescent Head.
I was in the throes of motherhood and felt a little lost. I had a knack for entrepreneurship and absolutely loved fashion, so it was as easy as putting the two together (plus I had a gorgeous little muse in Billie). There were only a few Australian childrenswear brands floating around on Instagram, so I saw an opening in the market to launch a minimalist and unisex brand of my own.
What inspired your latest collection?
I thought about how I wanted to feel during winter, which was cosy and warm. For the Bisou Bisou collection, we focused on the fabrication – soft knits, ribbed cotton, and warm fleece sets. We also included a lot more neutral colour.
What are three key design components you consider when putting together a new range?
Fabrication, wearability, and uniqueness.
How far in advance do you pre-plan each collection and its themes?
The planning process can start up to a year in advance. The first step is to gather inspiration, moodboards, and meet with our print designers. We have been in business for over five years now, so we know the shapes and styles that work, so sometimes it’s just a case of adding the prints to these.
You’ve created quite the cult following, what sets your label apart from others?
About a year after we first launched, we saw a huge influx of childrenswear brands. Most of them focused on neutral and unisex styles and we thought that if we didn’t pivot, we
would lose our identity. This is when we started getting prints onto our pieces and that’s what really catapulted our brand.
We love the conscious ethics behind your brand, can you share a little more on this?
At the forefront of our brand is to produce clothing that is of high quality. We want our customers to buy these pieces with longevity in mind. Our pieces are at a higher price point as opposed to fast-fashion brands, which don’t support conscious consumerism. We are also part of the i=change initiative, where we donate a percentage of each sale to an organisation which the customer chooses.
What is one piece of advice you wish you had when you started?
To find your niche early! In the beginning you almost feel like you need to be selling to everyone but focusing on this will take away from your brand’s identity.
What’s next for By Billie?
We would love to open a concept store! It’s a dream of mine to have a place where we can showcase our pieces.
Calling all fashion and beauty lovers! These are three brands you should have on your radar.
Known for their personalised perfumes, candles, shampoo, lotion, and more, you can now explore their full range in their new James Street location.

Driven by passion and an urge to build a better future for our community, BEDA’s Anthony Ryan, alongside our city leaders, are on a mission to propel Brisbane onto the world stage.
By PENELOPE PELECASAnthony Ryan, CEO of Brisbane Economic Development Agency (BEDA), is passionate about Brisbane’s future, so much so, he has spearheaded a new initiative to help supercharge the growth of our city’s economy, which is forecast to be worth $239 billion by 2041. Better Brisbane Alliance is focussed on fast-tracking the city’s investment, business growth, tourism, and event opportunities over the coming decade.
To help him get there, Anthony has enlisted the help of some of the city’s leading figureheads, including Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner, Queensland Art Gallery Director Chris Saines, and Star Entertainment Group CEO Robbie Cooke, to name a few.
“When I started looking at who I should be putting into the group, I knew we needed those that were decision makers,” Anthony says. “At the first meeting we stated that wouldn’t it be great that what we’re able to achieve sets the pace and benchmark, and that other cities go ‘look what Brisbane has done’.”
He adds: “I think one of the beauties of this group is that it’s not about ego. Better Brisbane Alliance decided from the start it wasn’t going to be a committee that just sits and talks, there had to be genuine, clear KPIs and outcomes that we would deliver to the city.”
And Anthony has kept his word. The committee has set two clear outcomes for this year: develop a platform which will allow users
to see what other happenings are on around the same time after they purchase a ticket for an event (this will be an extension to Visit Brisbane) and a deeper level economic outlook for Brisbane which will highlight why our River City is the perfect place to visit, do business, and invest –keep your eyes peeled!
“Not many cities get given the gift of an Olympic Games, the Queen’s Wharf, wonderful new restaurants, and positive migration. I think we’re the only capital city in Australia right now that people are leaving where they come from for. And the reason why they are coming here is because of our lifestyle.”

Adam Flaskas Founder and Director, Howard Smith WharvesIt probably comes as no surprise that Howard Smith Wharves (HSW) Founder and Director Adam Flaskas is passionate about bringing underutilised properties back to life. HSW has become the ultimate entertainment destination in Brisbane, boasting an eclectic range of restaurants, bars, private dining rooms, and exclusive spaces.
“I absolutely love heritage buildings and see them as a form of art and sculpture,” he says. “To be able to revive them and give them a new purpose in life fills me with joy. It’s a passion of mine to breathe new life and create vibrant businesses within them.”
Adam has always had an interest in property, getting his start as a commercial agent for Raine & Horne at 18. “I was lucky enough to have a wonderful mentor, who inspired me to work hard and follow my intuition,” he says.
Now, as Director of the hottest precinct in Brisbane, a typical day for him starts with some tennis before heading into a busy day of backto-back meetings. After a long day at work, he likes to unwind by cooking (with a glass of wine in-hand, of course!) and spending quality time with his family.
So, what’s next for Adam? The entrepreneur is looking forward to continuing to evolve HSW. “We are excited to be building the first stage of a 250-metre pontoon along the riverfront of the Wharves that will host multiple world-class tourism experiences,” he says. “Bringing world-class experiences to Brisbane is something I am determined to keep delivering and raise the bar on what we have to offer.”
We’re elated at how well HSW has been received by our city.”
Wallace Bishop has been in the same family hands for over 100 years, so it only seemed fitting brothers, Alexander and William Bishop, who are fifth generation, would one day have leading roles within the family business.
Like most children of family businesses, Alexander and William spent a lot of their free time mopping floors and learning the ropes of the trade. It wasn’t until they both finished high school, that they decided to officially join the family business. The brothers now share the role of Operations Manager, with Alexander mainly covering marketing, e-commerce, and stock and logistics, and William overseeing retail, workshop, and finance.
“Design has always been a passion of mine, but I have always combined this with business,” Alexander says. “Both areas have a significant role in our industry and with the rapidly changing retail landscape, one doesn’t survive without the other.”
William says growing up in one of Australia’s most prominent jeweller families wasn’t as glamorous as one may have initially thought.
“Everyone else sees the glamour of it all, but we’ve always just seen hard work,” he explains. “You never wasted time, and traditionally fixing a problem meant breaking the welder out.”
Alexander adds, “Both dad and grandpa were very hard workers, so we grew up with that mentality.”
The brothers have their sights set on the future and are busy preparing. “Our main aim is the continuous improvement of our operations and systems, which we should see some good returns from within the next year,” William says. “From there, we will be building on this foundation for the future.”
BISHOP JEWELLERSWe’re very lucky to be here and have the opportunity to add our part to this business.”

From a young age, Andrew Craig was attracted to the concept of buying and selling, having customers, and earning money. By 12, he had sold his first computer, and by his teenage years, he’d already turned over $1 million – all from his parents’ garage.
Andrew is now the proud owner of Laser Clinics Australia in Queen’s Plaza (Queensland’s flagship clinic), Mr Mista, a concept born from his frequent travels to the US, and Chatti.com (providing leading brands with communication services), which is his main focus and a continuation from his early computer days.
“I’ve always had a natural ability to connect with people, which is an absolute necessity for a successful business,” he says. “Although these businesses are different from each other, they are all service-based.”
Running various businesses is definitely no easy feat. Andrew usually likes to start his day with a gym session or a yoga class down at Howard Smith Wharves.
“There is never a dull moment!” he says. “Some days I’m flying to Sydney for the day, others I’m in the office working on deals, meeting with business partners, or holding strategy sessions.”
Andrew is also a Director of the Valley Chamber of Commerce and an ambassador for the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust. “Operating a small business is tough work and the Valley Chamber of Commerce provides a great way for local businesses to connect and network,” he says.
And while you’re probably thinking what else can this mover and shaker do, Andrew recently returned from an overseas trip to Amsterdam to secure the rights to exciting new technology, which will soon be added to Chatti.com and used by major Australian television stations – we can’t wait to see what he does next!
There is NEVER a dull moment.”
Co-founders Ben Cleary-Corradini and Theo Roduner couldn’t have imagined that their twoperson market stall serving fresh handmade gnocchi would transform into a chain of busy gnoccherias across Australia.
“We are absolutely thrilled and very humbled by the ongoing local support we have received since we started at the markets back in 2015,” Ben says.
“We wanted to share our love for authentic Italian comfort food with Brisbane and we were curious to ‘test and see’ if people would enjoy our home-style gnocchi and thank goodness they did! We love that our offering is unique and that it has brought a lot of joy to so many people since we started.”
There are now four Gnocchi Gnocchi Brothers locations across Queensland (South Bank, Paddington, James Street and Southport), as well as a gnocchi and sauce production kitchen in Everton Hills. The duo also recently opened up a flagship New South Wales store in Newton, Sydney, and are gearing up to open a brand-new Morayfield location.
Ben, who focuses on building brand awareness, and Theo, who oversees all things related to food, are looking forward to a busy year ahead and have recently enlisted the help of Pizza Capers founder and ‘gnocchi whisperer’ Anthony Russo to drive the expansion of the company.
“We are on a mission to become not only Australia’s but the world’s favourite destination for gnocchi lovers!” Ben says. “Our immediate growth will be focused here in South East Queensland, followed by a push further into Sydney and Melbourne before we look to expand internationally.”
We love that our offering is unique.” –Ben Cleary-Corradini
Troy McKenzie has been surrounded by high-end jewellery most of his life. Born and bred in Brisbane, he started as an apprentice jeweller at the age of 17, working his way up in manufacturing jewellery, designing, and repairing. Since then, he has studied gemmology through the prestigious Gemmological Institute of Great Britain, earning him the coveted post nominals ‘FGA’, and is now the Queensland Representative Specialist for Leonard Joel, Australia’s premier auction house (he has also studied advanced diamond grading in Antwerp, Belgium, and is a registered valuer).
A typical day in his life consists of everything from client appointments to exciting jewellery valuations. “It’s always fascinating to hear the history of where the pieces originated from,” Troy says.
As for his favourite part about the role, he says it comes down to “the diversity and excitement of not knowing what’s going to present, whether that be exotic jewels, rare artworks, or collectables. Everything is always on a deadline, and I love the fast-paced energy, meeting people from all walks of life, with items that all have a different story. It really is fascinating.”
When he’s not busy sourcing and selling striking pieces, you’ll find him on a morning run with his dog, enjoying some quality time with his family, or indulging in a long leisurely alfresco lunch with friends.
I love meeting people from all walks of life.”
Much to people’s surprise, Brendon Mann is not a hairdresser. While he comes from a hairdressing family, his career started in retail, where he worked his way up to management, before eventually running a large retail company across Queensland.
Brendon’s passion for business and his hairdressing industry knowledge led him to opening the first Epic Hair Designs salon in Kenmore in 2008. Fast forward 15 years, Epic Hair Designs now offers beautiful hair transformations at 16 locations throughout Brisbane and Hope Island on the Gold Coast, and it’s all thanks to Brendon, who has grown the business from the ground up. At the helm, Brendan now has more than 200 staff and he plans to open more stores in the near future (keep an eye out, northsiders!). He’s also gearing up to launch Allure by Epic, a luxury online beauty store.
Brendon isn’t only making strides in the hairdressing industry, but he’s also being noticed for his philanthropic work across Brisbane. Only recently he was named AHIA (Australian Hair Industry Awards) 2022 Vidal Sassoon Humanitarian of the Year and was a runner up in the QCF Philanthropy Awards alongside his partner Brendan Smith. The pair, who have raised more than $400,000 for Women’s Legal Service Queensland, were recently appointed ambassadors for the organisation. Brendon also holds an annual fundraising gala and walk for domestic violence victims.
Whether it’s his hairdressing or philanthropic work, one thing’s for sure, Brendon loves helping his community.

We chat to up-and-coming Brissy photographer, Luke Sartor, who is on a mission to photograph 100 athletes – watch this space…
By PENELOPE PELECASBold, raw, and minimal, that’s how Brisbanebased sport and fine art photographer Luke Sartor would describe his style.
“I’m a pretty simple guy,” he says. “I like simplicity and genuine human interaction.”
Luke, who fell in love with photography after a life-changing trip to Europe, has been busy sinking his teeth into a fun new project. The Mackay-born creative is on a mission to help 100 professional and amateur athletes shoot an image worthy of their biographies. He calls this project ‘Immortals’.
“I wanted to take my photography career in a completely different direction, and I needed a project
to really sink my teeth into,” Luke explains. “I’ve always loved sport … so I thought if I could help athletes get the image that will tell their story, I can create some of my best work and meet amazing individuals along the way.”
“As it stands, I have shot 16. The time is arbitrary, but I wanted to set a big goal to push me to get out there and shoot as much as I can. I have a busy schedule, so I try to get to it whenever I have a spare moment.”
He says the experience so far has been “absolutely incredible”. “The people I have met and the connections I have made in the last four months have been extremely rewarding. These are some of the most hard-working, talented
individuals I have ever met.”
Luke seeks inspiration from the music he listens to, artwork, and fellow photographers – his all-time fave is British photographer Platon, who has shot some of the most recognisable faces in the world (aka, the Obamas, Serena Williams, and Harry Styles).
“I want people to feel like they are being seen, that the real ‘them’ is being seen,”
Luke says. “Helping people express that and expressing the simplicity of how I see the world is what I try to achieve.”
The rest of the year is looking pretty busy for this emerging photographer, who is struggling to narrow down his ‘a thousand ideas’.
“I have a thousand ideas all competing for my attention to work on haha, but I would like to shoot a project I’m titling ‘What is Money’.”
… expressing the simplicity of how I see the world is what I try to achieve.”

Our CBD has gotten a brand-new luxury lobby bar, and we couldn’t be more excited. Georgio’s Café on George Street (how fitting) is selling everything from cheesy toasties, buttery croissants, refreshing salads, sweet treats from Doughcraft, and delicious coffee from Bear Bones. We know where we’ll be heading the next time we ‘forget’ lunch.
This humble cafe, deli, and wine bar brings a homely take on Greek fare to our River City, feeding you just like your yiayia would. Helmed by a mother-daughter duo, Pablo’s Pantry leans on recipes passed down generations in the likes of spanakopita, baklava, and kefthedes. Enjoy coffee, breakfast icons, and deli treats by day, then decadent antipasto and small-batch drops by night.

Say hello to your newest West End local, Flying Colours. Promising lo-fine wines and smooth beats, there’s no doubt Flying Colours will soon become a weekend staple among Brisbanites. And if that’s not enough to entice you, they also have a cracking menu – we’d recommend tucking into their hot dog with smoked pork cheek Frankfurt and mustard (and yes, it tastes as good as it sounds).

Radiant caramel tones, a hint of blush, effortless nude lips, and a creamy complexion – that’s the formula for Tanielle Jai’s signature ultra-bronzy makeup look, aka ‘latte makeup’, which has recently resurfaced and gone viral in the beauty world. Here is a product breakdown on what she uses to ace the glowy and bronzy makeup trend (so long, vanilla girl!).
By PENELOPE PELECASA common misconception around varicose veins is that only women are affected. The truth is venous disease does not discriminate. According to current research, approximately 40 per cent of men in Australia suffer from varicose veins at some point in their lives.
In most cases, men opt for treatment much later, which puts them at greater risk of ulceration and the permanent skin damage that follows advanced varicose veins. The reason? Men are not as concerned about the visual appearance of their legs, therefore are less likely to be proactive about seeking early treatment as their female counterparts.
Here in Queensland, we buck the trend. At our clinic we see comparatively more men than other major city clinics. This is probably due to the fact that Brisbane’s sunny climate allows for wearing shorts yearround and participation in sport is high, so men don’t have the opportunity to keep their legs hidden.
Most people prefer flexible working conditions and want to work from home at least half of the week. The benefits of not having to commute, additional time with family, ability for more focused work, work-life balance, and less stress at the start of the day were a few benefits during the pandemic. Although the difficulties in working from home such as isolation, inconsistent routines, and poor boundaries were challenging, it’s the benefits that workers miss.
What we learned during the pandemic is that humancentric leaders at work, those treating employees as people not resources, develop workplaces with less burnout, increased performance, and workers who intend to stay with the employer. These leaders listen, understand, and respond to employees with empathy and nurturing that reflect intelligent compassion.
Workplaces of the future need leaders who care not only for the business, yet more importantly for the broader psychosocial wellbeing of their greatest asset, its people.

We’re in Leo season, which means, yes, you’ve guessed it, we’re taking a look at the official birthstone of August, aka peridot. Known as the ‘gem of the sun’, this glowy greenish yellow gemstone has experienced a resurgence in popularity in recent years. While peridot is comparatively a soft stone, therefore making it ideal for jewellery pieces like pendants, earrings, and pins, it’s also a good stone for statement rings and necklaces. As peridot is the official birthstone of August, we thought it would only be fitting to list some of the interesting facts about this luminous gem:
• Peridot is the only gemstone to come in one colour
• Did you know the greenish yellow gemstone has been found in space?
• In Hawaiian legends, the gemstone is said to be the tears of the volcanic goddess Pele
• The gemstone was once used as a medical remedy for asthma and anxiety
• Peridot is believed to bring good health, restful sleep, and peace.
As we welcome the arrival of a fresh new month, it’s the perfect time to re-evaluate and edit your wardrobe to ensure you’re ready for the season ahead.
Embrace the art of curation and seek out simplicity, focusing on key pieces that seamlessly transition from AW to SS.
Begin by decluttering your closet and parting ways with items that no longer serve you. Let go of pieces that are damaged, ill-fitting, or haven’t been worn in ages. This will make space for versatile essentials that suit your style.
Consider investing in quality basics like lightweight sweaters, versatile denim, and classic outerwear. These staples will form the foundation of your looks and allow for effortless mixing and matching. Keep an eye out for autumnal hues and textures that complement your style during the cooler weather.
As you add new pieces, remember to balance trends with timeless elegance. With a thoughtfully edited wardrobe, you’ll embrace the changing season with style, ease, and a renewed sense of confidence.
If you’re a fashionista, travel is the perfect opportunity to show off your style. From Positano to Paros, when it comes to dressing for summertime, choosing fashion items that go seamlessly from beach to bar are key. Here are my top tips:
When I pack for a trip, I always like to add a mix of accessories, earrings, sunnies, and a variety of hats. Why? These accessories are perfect for either dressing a basic outfit up or down, depending on the occasion. I also love travelling with natural silk, linen, and cotton outfits as they’re light, breathable, and most importantly, don’t crush!
If you’re a hat wearer, I’d also recommend packing a hat clip (it’s honestly a game changer!). As for your footwear, I can’t stress how important it is to pack comfortable shoes. I always opt for a pair of chic sneakers, flats, and espadrilles.
And when it comes to the actual packing, packing cubes are a life saver, and remember to roll, don’t fold!

We’ve had forestcore, desert chic, and now ‘tomato girl’ is the latest home décor trend to grace our social feeds. Embracing all things Mediterranean, the tomato girl aesthetic is reminiscent of an endless Italian summer, made up of wooden, rustic interiors, linen tableware, and of course, playful fruit prints. Who knew we’d base an entire home décor aesthetic off a tomato?

Unsung Heroes is the event working to raise funds for The Carers Foundation and amplify the voices of young, unpaid carers.
By LAUREN PAYNEEstablished in 2015, The Carers Foundation Australia works to provide support to unpaid family carers, who often have to give up their own lives to care for loved ones who live with illness or disability.
When working as a nurse, the foundation’s Founding Director Ronnie Benbow (OAM) saw firsthand how caring for a loved one full time affected the lives of young carers and how many of them felt alone and unsupported.
“There are children as young as eight years old who are caring for their mums, dads, brothers or sisters,” Ronnie says.
“Two out of three have severe mental health issues due to extreme stress and isolation.”
The Carers Foundation Australia works to support these young, unpaid carers and provide them with unique wellbeing programs to support their emotional, physical, and mental health.
However, that’s not the only unique thing
about The Carers Foundation Australia. As the foundation is not government funded, it generally relies on grants, donations, and fundraising events to assist them with necessary funding.
One of their most successful fundraising events is Unsung Heroes, their new annual event that was launched in 2022 with their Young Carer Patrons Jess and Lisa Origliasso, also known as The Veronicas.
During the event, eight inspirational individuals from Brisbane and its surrounding cities come together to fundraise for The Carers Foundation, before taking to the stage to compete in a sing-off to claim The Unsung Hero Award.
“Heroes will perform their choice of song, after having professional singing lessons with our Head Vocal Coach and Creative Director Lisa Lockland-Bell, from Performance Studios,” Ronnie says.
“There will be four judges to give
feedback on each individual performance and there are also awards for the Best Singer, People’s Choice, Most Funds Raised, plus a few surprises.”
The idea for the Unsung Heroes event came from the powerful nature of music itself.
“Most people resonate with music as it has the power to evoke strong emotions, connect with their experiences, and create a sense of unity and belonging,” Ronnie says.
“Music speaks to the heart and soul, igniting emotions, memories, and connections that enrich people’s lives and contribute to their sense of self and community.”
