Take our Creative Director, Bridget Brown, for instance. Bridge recently returned from an incredible family trip to Africa, where they experienced the majesty of safariing in style. Picture this: waking up to the sounds of nature, enjoying luxurious camps, and spotting the Big Five in their natural habitat. Bridget’s tales of adventure and breathtaking landscapes have us all green with envy, and we share some of her images in Travel.

the world of glitz and glamour, it’s heartfelt connections and dedication that truly make the magic happen.

BECAUSE I KNEW YOU

Stardom, sisterhood, and a sprinkle of stage magic. Meet the leading ladies of WICKED, Sheridan and Courtney, who are proving that together, they truly are, unlimited.

INTERVIEW COURTNEY FRANK

Sheridan, congratulations on your new role in WICKED! Tell me, what is it like to put your own spin on the character in the Australian version of the show Thank you! I feel grateful that I get to kind of perform Elphaba in my own way. Our creative directors really allowed us to play and explore the characters...we didn’t have to follow something that was previously created or decided upon, we had freedom. And we were really given permission to go within ourselves and bring out the best performance that we have, rather than copy anyone that came before me. I love that, because playing a role like this can allow you to bring your own quirks while still playing on the nostalgia of a character that is so well-known and loved… Exactly! Let’s talk about some of the challenges you face as a performer. How do you approach character development before a new role I’m grateful that when I was young, the repertoire that I was just naturally drawn to was Elphaba’s music. I’ve always sung Elphaba, and I feel like there’s always been a little part of her in me…I feel like my voice is really suited to that style. It’s really important for me as an actor not to make choices or decisions about how I’m going to play Elphaba before I go into a rehearsal room, because the process for me is really led by our director. I act from a place of truth. So, I see a scene and I try to imagine how Elphaba would respond in that moment and then act instinctively from there. And sometimes that can also be your undoing, right? Everyone has their own process, but it’s nice to see it evolve organically. It needs to be unique to you – with an element of relatability to the original character at the same time… 100%. When I was younger, I used to watch Elphaba videos on YouTube all the time – and I did the same when I was auditioning. But once I actually got the role, I did not gravitate towards that at all. I just knew it would be the undoing of me like you said. What do you think the audiences would be most surprised by in this production of WICKED WICKED is the perfect musical. It has everything. You have stunning costumes, gorgeous set design, the score that was created by Stephen Schwartz, the book by Winnie Holzman; everything I can think of is stunning and absolutely captivating, and all works together to create the piece that is WICKED. The other thing I love is working with Courtney (Monsma). What she brings to Glinda is so unique; she’s so playful and that brings out my best performance. Having a friend on stage and the chemistry we both share is so special – I’m so grateful that we have that. As an actress, it’s the most rewarding thing to be working alongside someone as talented and kind as her; I am always supported on stage, I’m never afraid, I’m never scared. I love that… what else has Courtney taught you One thing that she taught me really early on that I still think of is to remember ‘if it’s not fun, it’s funny’ – basically if something ever goes wrong, you just have to laugh at it. Always take the perspective of joy.

Hi Courtney! You’ve had such an esteemed career so far, from Princess Anna in Frozen to Katherine Howard in SIX The Musical. How does it feel to now be playing Glinda It’s so funny because each role that I’ve played has influenced me and given me the experience that I’ve needed to play Glinda. Growing up I had a really deep connection to WICKED and my favourite thing about this role is that Glinda gets to explore every facet that you dream of as an actor – there’s comedy, there’s this dramatic arc that she gets to go on – she lives a lifetime on stage. It’s one of those roles that I genuinely will never forget and probably always talk about. That must be so surreal, being a WICKED fan and now coming full circle to play Glinda. Did you ever see yourself being able to bring such an iconic character to life on stage It was always the hope. A lot of people ask you your dream role and the fact that I’ve actually gotten to play my dream role is amazing. I think the thing is with these dream roles is being able to find your own uniqueness within the role that makes it more attainable to you. I’ve always dreamed big my whole life – call me delusional – but it seems to be working so far. Look, if it’s working, keep doing it! Totally! We’ve also seen the production be integrated and infiltrated into pop culture in tv shows and on social media – how do you sift through all that noise and past interpretations and give it your own spin I think the most incredible thing about the process as an actor learning that show is that it is genuinely about the text. And whatever I find from the text, organically for me is always the right choice. Obviously, you’re naturally influenced by past productions and things you see, but I think with any choice you make as an actor, as long as it’s organic to your understanding of the text, then it will always be the right choice. It’s the best way for me to not feel that pressure of comparison because no matter who steps into these amazing roles, it will always be about how they interpret it individually. And there’s no right or wrong. Agree wholeheartedly, what a fresh perspective! Let’s talk about your process. When you’re preparing for a role, do you have a research process? Any unique rituals or habits In terms of the character, I learn all my lines and I specifically don’t add any of my own creative choices. I just learn the lines basically and then I try and understand the essence of the character that I want to interpret. The best thing about not having solid choices at the beginning means that you have freedom in the room to improvise…you have to remember that it’s a collaboration; it’s about being open and taking on as much information as you can. On the flip side, I’d love to know how you remain creatively fulfilled and what does it look like for you to look after your mind, body, and soul Something that people don’t necessarily know about me is that I am just such a nerd for what I do. I do a three-hour acting class every Tuesday night, I do self-taping all the time, and I’m constantly trying to get better at what I do...it brings me so much joy. When you’re giving so much on stage, it’s so important to give back to yourself too.

HAPPY HOLIDAY

INTERVIEW NATALIE MCGOWAN

As one half of Peking Duk and the creative mind behind his solo project Keli Holiday, Adam Hyde is making his mark.

For over a decade, Peking Duk has been a staple in Aussie house parties and dance floors, dominating the charts and festival lineups with hits like ‘High’, ‘Fake Magic’, and ‘Stranger’. Comprised of disc jockey duo Adam Hyde and Reuben Styles, the multi-ARIA award-winning, 10x platinum-selling pair from Canberra have made a name for themselves as icons of the Australian music scene.

But there’s more to Adam Hyde than just Peking Duk. Under his solo alias, Keli Holiday, Hyde is venturing into a new chapter of his musical journey, offering fans a different facet of his artistry.

Embracing the same stuck-in-your-head kind of melodies and energetic beats that have become synonymous with Peking Duk’s sound, Hyde takes a slightly different approach to his solo music, using the opportunity to infuse a more personal touch through his lyrics. “I write from the heart immediately with Keli,” he says. “I start with a drum beat and talking shit or a guitar riff and humming whatever comes. It’s all fun.”

Born out of heartbreak, Keli Holiday’s first album KELI, released in 2022, came “from the mind of a man living off of nothing but New Order Records, beer, sleepless nights, and the sheer excitement and love of exploring an unknown city named New York.”

TRACKLIST:

1. HORSEPOWER

KELI HOLIDAY

2. DISCO

KELI HOLIDAY

3. UP ALL NIGHT

Like the rest of Hyde’s persona, the inspiration behind the moniker is fun, creative, and a bit chaotic. “It felt like a holiday writing the music – but a twisted one at that,” he says. “I thought, ‘What would be a fucked up holiday?.’ Imagine the Kelly gang on a family holiday… that’s fucked up. Keli Holiday.”

Now, it’s been two years since the release of his debut album and Hyde is back with a bang, bringing us his latest project – the high-energy EP JESTERMAN. Best described by Hyde as a series of songs that “all seemed to fit together under the circus tent, so to speak,” this release is big and bold – a five-track dance collection filled with electrifying beats.

Despite the juggling act (no pun intended) of balancing his musical commitments, Hyde credits “lots of coffee and tequila” for keeping the show on the road.

Catch him in Brisbane, performing as Peking Duk on 9 August, and then again as Keli Holiday for BIGSOUND in September. Looking for the perfect excuse to let loose and boogie? You’ve just found it.

HOOK, LINE, AND DINE

What can you expect from a table at Fosh? Exquisitely fresh seafood, memorable flavours, and unmatched hospitality. Welcome to Portside’s contemporary seafood eatery.

Stepping off Portside’s boardwalk and entering Fosh’s bright, airy restaurant is a seamless transition. Few things rival the satisfaction of dining on seafood with a waterfront view.

Upon entering Fosh, the lively dining room bathed in natural light and delicious smells from the kitchen greeted me, immediately setting the stage for an exciting experience ahead.

Seated by the window overlooking the water, my lunch companion and I eagerly prepared for a memorable feast. We opted for a selection of fresh seafood, appetisers and a hearty main, accompanied by a recommended bottle of Heggies Vineyard Chardonnay from Eden Valley, which promised to complement our meal perfectly by our knowledgable waiter.

The Chardonnay indeed lived up to expectations with its vibrant fruit flavours and well-balanced acidity, setting a delightful tone for what was to come. The cold seafood platter stole the spotlight, featuring a tantalising array of oysters, kingfish, scallop crudo, and prawns—all impeccably fresh, thanks to Fosh’s commitment to a 24-hour ocean-to-plate concept. Each bite was enhanced by accompanying condiments like an Asian-inspired sauce for the sashimi and a zesty vinaigrette for the oysters, adding layers of flavours reminiscent of seaside dining on a summer day.

Then, our next course arrived, including Hokkaido Scallops in kombu butter, which offered a creamy contrast to the perfectly grilled scallops. The burrata atop fennel jam stood out as a favourite, its rich creaminess balanced by the sweet acidity of the fennel, accompanied by slices of fresh sourdough that added a satisfying crunch. As an avid burrata lover myself, I can say this was hands down one of the most memorable I’ve had.

Finally, the pan-seared snapper closed the show with a bang with its accompaniments of warm tartare, peas, fennel, and crispy capers—a symphony of flavours that complemented the delicate fish without overpowering it, leaving us thoroughly satisfied.

Final thoughts? Impeccable service, inviting ambience, and downright delicious food. Will I be back? Absolutely.

SKIN IN THE GAME

When you think of a true icon in the Australian media scene, Sonia Kruger undoubtedly comes to mind. For years, she has captivated audiences with her radiant complexion and enviable glow, both on and off the screen. Her presence isn’t just noticed—it’s celebrated. In this exclusive interview, Sonia shares the secrets behind her timeless beauty and gives us the scoop on the launch of her exciting new skincare product.

Hi Sonia, thanks for taking the time to chat with us. I’d love to know what inspired you to create the Radiant Complexion Serum with the team at Three Warriors I’ve felt a certain sense of ownership with this brand for years because I was an early adopter and I love that Three Warriors is certified organic and an Australian company. We essentially created this serum because I really like using the TW self-tan products as an alternative to the sun, which causes a lot of skin damage. However, my day job requires a fair amount of makeup and I need to cleanse my face often, so it means my face can get a little lighter than the rest of the body. I thought it would be great if you could combine a skin serum that you use at night, after the rest of your routine, with just the perfect amount of glow, so you wake up refreshed and radiant. Following the phenomenal success of your wildly successful self-tanning range, did the idea for this innovative new serum arise from a gap in the market I did notice a gap in the market for a product that incorporated both tanning and skincare for the face, which is why we worked on such a fabulous and innovative product. Three Warriors was really early when it came to skincare-based self-tanner and I

love the self-tan movement has evolved into skin care focused on hydration. It’s wonderful for women to feel that we can look and feel good without the harsh Australian sun. I’d love to hear about your personal journey! How has your Radiant Complexion Serum transformed your skin health and helped promote your inner and outer radiance I’m super proud of this product. I feel fabulous when I put it on, and that’s exactly what I want other Aussie women to feel when they try. It’s a product that keeps me glowing throughout the busy week and I feel a lot more confident leaving the house with less makeup since I still get the perfect amount of glow. It contains ingredients like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and hydrolysed collagen so it hydrates my skin, boosts my skin elasticity, and strengthens my skin barrier, all while evening my skin tone! If you could give one piece of advice to someone starting their skincare journey with your products, what would it be I’d recommend that you stay consistent, and you will see results! All you need is one to three pumps of the Radiant Complexion Serum applied to your face and decolletage and the next day you will have the most amazing glow.

THE POWER OF PALETTE

From fashion to furnishings, Maxine Wylde is paving her way forward as a colour star.

Maxine Wylde, the esteemed fashion authority and social media personality, has recently redirected her fashion eye towards the realm of interior design and it’s the ultimate fashion-centric approach to refreshing space. The key? Colour, of course. More specially the Solstice palette from the 2024 Dulux Colour Forecast. We sat down with Maxine to chat more about her space transformation.

Hi Maxine! We’re so excited to have you join us. With a huge following and a reputation for creating colour theory styling content, we’re curious to know: what sparked your passion for colour styling Honestly, the path that led me to loving and experimenting with colour was so organic, I was playing around in a clothing store on a trip I took to New York with my now fiancé, Phill, quite a few years back, and I tried on a green jacket with a purple turtleneck and it was as if something just clicked inside my brain! I have always loved colour so I found it so fun to apply it and experiment with it through my outfits. You recently took on a different type of design challenge outside of fashion, restyling your living room and hallway. How do you see your home as an extension of your personal style, and what inspired you to merge your fashion style with your interior design approach I studied interior design, so this little challenge was so so fun! I loved getting back to my passion and love for interiors and applying the colour theory that I use to get dressed in the space I live in! It is definitely an extension of my personal style, so I wanted it to really emulate the tones and vibe of my current wardrobe – which is all about creating bold and trendy outfits by combining an eclectic mix of patterns, textures, and shades. You used the guidance of the Solstice colour palette in your recent revamp – describe in your own words the colour palette, and what made you go with this direction My interior style is a mix of vintage 70s vibes with modern touches, so I wanted to reflect that with my new colour scheme to help tie in all of the special furniture pieces I had collected. I was drawn to Dulux Potter’s Pink and Dulux Lama for my living room and hallway feature walls,

for their warmth and nod to colour palettes seen so frequently in 70s interiors and style. I love the depth of the overall palette, with the deep red browns concentrated against the pale peach and light blues – there are so many combinations to play with to evoke a familiar and inviting atmosphere. How do you strategically use a feature colour to create a cohesive look that goes beyond just one statement wall, and what are some tips for incorporating it into furniture, décor, and accessories It can be helpful to choose three or four colours from a colour palette you love and play around with the quantities until you get the balance just right. You can reference feature wall colours within other decorative objects and furniture pieces. But sometimes less is more – don’t incorporate this colour into every item in your space. Sometimes, introducing a contrasting colour can help make a space feel more cohesive, add a level of interest and ground a space.

Get ready to swoon, design lovers!

Fun hues, organic shapes, and sleek lines come together to celebrate the return of mid-century modern interiors. Once again, the beloved retro vibe of the MCM style greets the design world, but this time with a fresh emphasis on simplicity, functionality, and a dash of playfulness. The result? Spaces that are refreshed, timeless, and totally on-trend!

INTERIOR MOTIVES

We chatted with Yasmeen of Yasmeen Cathy Interiors to gain her expert advice and insights on all things property styling and interior design.

Tell me about yourself and what you do As young children, my parents were fortunate to receive support from their communities, which helped them transition from India and Poland to their new lives in Australia. They dedicated their lives to paying it forward, a mission that profoundly shaped my path. For me, interior design and property styling are opportunities to carry on their legacy. Helping people to transition into the new chapters of their lives, celebrate new beginnings, and create beautiful spaces that honour these changes. It’s a blessing to be on this journey with my clients, creating interiors that speak to the heart and soul of homeowners, sellers, and buyers. Design tips that instantly transform a room Design around key pieces that speak to you, consider how you want to live and move within your home, and declutter with storage systems in place. These steps create timeless interiors that you will love and complements your lifestyle. Biggest design faux pas you see people make Creating spaces that are trendy but don’t reflect your lifestyle, aesthetic, or the character of the home. It’s important to ensure your space is authentic to you. Favourite colour palette to work with I enjoy using a base of white and layering with colour and texture, depending on the property and location. For example, a beautiful coastal home looks amazing with whites and blues, while a midcentury property shines with accents in jewel tones. Favourite brands to work

with I love finding unique places. Eclectic Style in Noosa is a treasure with a broad range of styles and special pieces. Unique Fabrics and Designer Rugs are great suppliers I’ve used for over 20+ years. The Valley has amazing places like Globe West, St Barts, Mud Australia, and About Space Lighting. How do you approach each project I start by learning about the owner, their story, memories, lifestyle, and budget. Understanding what makes the property unique and its best features is essential. I source unique products that complement the homeowner’s lifestyle and the property’s character, creating an interior with soul. Favourite room to decorate I love decorating spaces where family and friends gather to make memories, such as the living room, dining room, and outdoor spaces. A beautiful bedroom that serves as a sanctuary for rest and peace is also very special to me. Most memorable project you’ve worked on Each project holds special memories. I recall working on a beautiful artist’s cottage that was being sold so the homeowners could move overseas to care for their parents. We staged the home in a few hours while the owner was away. When they returned, they were moved to tears and gave me a big hug. They said the staging was so beautiful and helped them realise they had made the right decision, allowing them to move forward and release their beloved home to new owners who would cherish it as much as they had.’

OUT OF AFRICA

WORDS BRIDGET BROWN

Maybe it was the takeaway Aperol Spritz’ that fit perfectly into the cup holders of the safari truck, or the golden sunsets that made it feel like you were on the set of The Lion King, but this was indeed a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

EGYPT | CAIRO + LUXOR

Cairo, the bustling capital of Egypt and home to iconic landmarks like the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx, was an incredible start to our trip. Our hotel, Mena House, had views of the pyramids that I couldn’t quite believe and our favourite restaurant Khufu Restaurant (voted #1 in Egypt by The World’s 50 Best) was equally as breathtaking. Next, it was a flight along the longest river in the world to Luxor, where we immersed ourselves in the vibrant culture, starting with a sunset felucca ride along the Nile. With only a few days to see all the temples, meet the artisanal women crafting items from Egyptian cotton, and witness the craftsmen working with pure stone at the Alabaster store, it’s safe to say we fell in love with the unbridled beauty of Luxor. Together, Cairo and Luxor promise an unforgettable trip that will leave you with more questions about their ancient history than answers.

KENYA | GIRAFFE MANOR

Imagine waking up in Nairobi, Kenya, surrounded by the unique beauty of Giraffe Manor. With pellets left in your room for turndown service, these long-necked locals are ready for their photo debut well before sunrise, right through to the moment you enjoy your delicious breakfast or afternoon high tea, casually poking their heads through the oversized windows as you eat. Prepare yourself to be covered in giraffe slobber – this exclusive boutique hotel is truly an experience where nature meets luxury in a one-of-a-kind boutique wildlife experience.

TANZANIA | SINGITA

Nestled within the iconic landscape of the Serengeti Tanzania is Singita, an exclusive retreat where the wildlife is quite literally on your doorstep. Each day brought about two breathtaking safaris (at sunrise and sunset), where we encountered unforgettable landscapes and an abundance of animal spotting. With hats and ponchos provided for fresh mornings, we were even fortunate enough to witness the birth of a baby giraffe, a pack of lions as they hunted their lunch, an abundance of elephants, and even a fleeting sighting of a leopard which we were told is extremely rare! As the sun set on each day, we enjoyed a decadent meal at the restaurant (recently ranked by The Australian as one of the Top 10 Dining Experiences in the world), then took our full bellies to either the hotel pool, complete with sweeping vistas over the Serengeti National Park, or back to our private pool – with the same incredible view from a slightly different angle.

LET’S DO THE

WINE THING

WORDS + IMAGES CHLOE HILL

From beer to wine: how I converted my boyfriend in just one weekend.

Wondering how to convert your beer-only boyfriend into a weekend wine man? Well, in just one weekend I achieved the near impossible, I tricked my boyfriend into trying multiple different wines and actually enjoying them. I can’t take any of the credit for this wine conversion therapy however, this was all thanks to a recent stay at Sirromet – Brisbane’s answer to the famed southern wine regions, and only 40 minutes from the CBD. Our weekend getaway can be perfectly summed up by three standout wines.

VINO ONE: GRANITE BELT VERDEHLO

A refreshing delight

My boyfriend laughed at the name, but I persisted. The Verdehlo was my favourite from a wine tasting a month or so earlier. We enjoyed this drop while dining alfresco at the Tuscan Terrace, with seafood and steak.

VINO TWO: ROSÉ CUVEE

A bubbly surprise

On arrival at our evening lodgings at Sanctuary by Sirromet, we settled in quickly. The tented pavilions boast a private ensuite, kitchenette, and all the creature comforts – plus a dessert platter and Rosé Cuvee on ice. I’m not normally a bubbly fan, but this rosé was a true Goldilocks, not too sweet but not too dry.

VINO THREE: MULLED WINE

A warm and fruity fave

We spent the crisp afternoon rugged up next to our private firepit, with a hamper full of charcuterie delights and a picnic rug provided. The sunset was the perfect opportunity to do a complete 180 and try a delicious mulled wine. A truly lush evening, all thanks to the incredible hospitality at Sirromet.

It’s a universally acknowledged truth that flying isn’t always glamorous. That’s why being prepared for a comfortable and stylish journey is a must. From the airport gate to cruising at 30,000 feet, these travel essentials will have you turning heads and landing looking a million bucks.

Buying vs. renovating

Could it be time to renovate or buy a renovator?

Since COVID-19, Brisbane’s property market has seen significant growth – but so has the residential construction industry.

After years of unprecedented accelerated growth, residential construction costs have stabilised, growing at the slowest annual rate in 22 years, according to CoreLogic’s Cordell Construction Cost Index (CCCI).

Housing price growth is anticipated to outpace construction costs this year, which should encourage more building. Price growth of input materials and total output costs are slowing, and construction workers are more available compared to one year ago.

Brisbane’s dwelling value has increased by 15.8 per cent over the past year and is currently at a record high. Following strong price growth of 9.1 per cent across capital cities last year, economists expect house prices to rise 5 to 6 per cent this year. One of the strongest performers is likely to be Brisbane due to a shortage of available dwellings.

This could be a perfect time to renovate your own home or to buy a renovator instead of paying for the finished product.

VARICOSE VEINS

WITH DR NICHOLAS KEMP

One step at a time

Varicose vein patients at some clinics are told to schedule both legs to be treated at the same time. This practice harks back to the days of surgery, however, you should remember that modern endovenous procedures have very minimal downtime and do not require hospitalisation or general anaesthetic, negating that old-fashioned outlook. At our practice, patients are encouraged to assess their worst leg first before looking at the second. A benefit of treating legs separately is that the Phlebologist can focus on getting the best results possible by being meticulous and waiting for successful healing, before moving on to the next leg.

This allows the patient to concentrate on being as mobile as possible immediately after the procedure and walking for 30 minutes a day for a fortnight to reduce the risk of blood clots.

There are exceptions – for instance, when treating out-of-town patients we often will schedule bilateral treatments so that less travel is required. We also take this approach with athletes who are unable to take much time off their training schedule.

Please trust us when we say wearing one stocking is much more comfortable than two!
