IN FASHION, AS in life, the month of September brings the opportunity for change; the warm winds of spring carry whispers of new season trends and bright beginnings. There’s much to be done! Fitness goals, messy cupboards, relationships and, of course, clothing all get a fresh start. Speaking of fashion in its intriguing and irresistible state, Indooroopilly Shopping Centre have bounced onto our cover, celebrating the arrival of a sensational season. Working with the ever-inspiring Jasmine Dowling, we delve into trends inspired by lace, slinky boudoir silks, seasonless staples, graphic colours, and sharp angles. Working on this piece may mean that my credit card has already been stretched past the point of no return, but I have a well-composed wardrobe and that is all that matters. Priorities can wait, right? We have also taken the opportunity to catch up with game changers such as Napoleon and Lianna Perdis, Julie McKenzie, Becky Cooper and Bridget Yorston of Bec & Bridge, Brit Redman and artists to watch from the Bigsound Festival. Throughout this issue, we explore the latest creative collaborations, soirees to Instagram and, most importantly, how to look good while feeling great. Every successful magazine depends on a lively conversation – between its contributors, editorial staff, advertisers and readers – and we hope our September edition has contributed to the intoxicating discussion of all things style.

RISE OF

STYLE

The rise of individual fashion consciousness is shaking up the fashion industry one snap at a time, writes Emmy-Lou McKean.

14

PERSONAL STYLE HAS become more popular than ever before. Not only do we turn to fashion magazines for inspiration, but Instagram accounts and street style blogs are now significant platforms in the fashion industry, marking the rise of individual style as the fixation on name-brands declines. As Yves Saint Laurent so famously said, “Fashion fades, style is eternal.” And how right he was. Fashion, being cyclical in nature, is notoriously fast-paced as each season’s trends change as quickly as they arrive. Style on the other hand, is impacted by much longerlasting factors such as religion, politics, culture and subculture, weather, body type, profession, upbringing and the list goes on. The rise of street style, which has been publicised by blogs and social media, has completely shifted the fashion industry. Even the most powerful publications cannot ignore the influence of street style photographers, or the fact that their photos, taken outside of fashion shows around the globe, are often more popular than the

images of the models themselves. With the increasing popularity of social media and street style photography, the fashion industry – once considered the realm of the wealthy and elite – is now accessible to anyone with a smart phone and an impeccable individual style. Hence, personal style has become just as significant as fashion, if not more so. Melbourne based street style photographer Liz Sunshine is known to the world of social media by her alias, Street Smith. Just a few years after her move from Townsville to Melbourne to continue studying photography, Liz discovered her direction and passion project: street style photography. Liz explains that her affinity with street style photography quickly became an obsession, and has been evolving ever since. “Originally I was a content creator who focused on content creation and influencers, but now I see myself as more of a documentary photographer,” she says. Liz explains how social media and the rise of the blogger/influencer go SEPTEMBER16

“Now I see myself as more of a documentary photographer.” Street Smith

PHOTOGRAPHY BY STREET SMITH

hand-in-hand with the relevance of street style because it’s accessible. “Finding individuality and inspiration rather than a curated brand is so much more relatable when viewed in the everyday landscape that street style represents.” “We all love the idea that the girl shot out the front of fashion week is a regular person,” she says. “Street style is the connection between the industry and the everyday.” Although starting from humble beginnings shooting street fashion content for boutiques, brands and influencers, the focus of Street Smith is now capturing people with a genuine passion for personal style and how different clothes make people feel. In a saturated market where individuality is the goal, it is hard to determine what makes a certain look, feeling or brand truly original. Developing a personal style is equal parts taste and function. The function element is dictated by your surroundings, how you spend your time and comfort level, whereas your personal taste is just that: personal and unique to you. This stylemagazines.com.au

is where style is cultivated. Your individual personal style should always be an extension of your personality and can be explored through a number of influences as well as your own set of standards. Liz believes that the recipe for good street style is head to toe consideration saying, “Someone who knows how to commit to a style from their hair and makeup, to their clothes and shoes.” But when it comes to street style photography, Liz explains it’s not all its snapped up to be. “It can take hours to find the right person, then making someone you have just met on the street comfortable is definitely something that needs to be practiced.” With the digital space providing a number of platforms as a source of inspiration, developing your own personal style in the 21st century doesn’t have to see you adhering to particular subcultures. Instead it encourages you to blur the lines between them to create your own individual look. READ MORE ONLINE

I GAINED EXPERIENCE IN MANAGING SEVERAL BRANCHES IN QUEENSLAND’S SOUTH WEST AREA. I WAS APPOINTED AS BRANCH MANAGER IN MACKAY AND THEN WORKED AS LUTWYCHE BRANCH MANAGER UNTIL JULY THIS YEAR. TAKING FIVE WITH ARHOA ROPATA: ROLE: FLAGSHIP LENDING SPECIALIST

THE PLACE IS RIGHT There are many things to consider when buying a property but there are some questions that shouldn’t be left unanswered. WHEN IT COMES to buying a home, you don’t need all the answers but there are certainly a few key questions you need to ask before you’ll be ready to purchase. Buying a property requires a lot of consideration, planning, research, patience and careful budgeting. While it can be a life-changing moment, there are some questions that should never go unanswered before buying a property. Commonwealth Bank’s Flagship branch has recently welcomed new Branch Manager, Kimberley Waugh and Home Loan Lending Specialist, Aroha Ropata to their team and we’ve asked what they think is most important to consider when buying a property. stylemagazines.com.au

If a property has been on the market a long time it may need further investigation as to why it hasn’t been sold. The house may have faults or be incorrectly priced. It’s important to ask the agent how long the property has been on the market as their response could reveal other problems you may be unaware of. Knowing the home owners’ motivation as to why they’re selling their property can make it easier for you to assess how eager they are to sell. If the owners are moving overseas or interstate they may be interested in a quick sale and could potentially accept a lower offer. If they are simply looking to downsize, they may hold on to the property as long as it takes to get the price they’re after.

EXPERIENCE: I HAVE WORKED IN A VARIETY OF DEPARTMENTS WITHIN CBA FROM THE GENERAL INBOUND CALL CENTRE AS WELL AS CUSTOMER SERVICE, BUSINESS BANKING AND MANAGEMENT ROLES IN QLD AND TASMANIA. I HAVE JUST CELEBRATED EIGHT YEARS OF WORKING FOR CBA AT THE END OF LAST MONTH AND THIS IS MY SECOND ROLE IN THE FLAGSHIP BRANCH. POSITION: I HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH CUSTOMERS’ HOME LOANS DURING MOST OF MY EIGHT YEARS WITH CBA, BUT ONLY THIS YEAR HAVE I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO LOOK AFTER MY CLIENTS AND THEIR HOME BUYING JOURNEY FROM START TO FINISH.

If you are interested in a property and it has had previous offers, it is important to know what they were. Knowing what other buyers have offered for the property will give you a good idea of how other people value the same space. It is in your best interest to check out comparable properties to see if the asking price is realistic. Keeping an open mind, doing your research and asking informed questions can determine whether or not the property you are interested in is suitable for purchase. Debbie Harry wearing her 505s in 1978

VINTAGE REVIVAL The relaunch of the iconic Levi’s 505 style sees the ’70s rock jean cut for today, writes Paige Booth. IN 1967, LEVI’S developed a pair of jeans with a zip fly and a straight leg and called them the 505. Little did they know that these jeans would soon become the face of the ’70s New York punk scene. The 505 jeans, or the unofficial stage jeans, first starred on the front cover of The Rolling Stones album Sticky Fingers. The pop stars, the graffiti writers and the rock stars such as Debbie Harry and the Ramones all wore them, tore them, lived in them and trashed them. Fast forward 50 years: Levi’s has reinvented this cult classic with the release of the 505C. With the “C” standing for customised, the 505C also has a ripped knee and a straighter leg for a slimmer fit. “The 505 was a symbol of counterculture,” says Karyn Hillman, Levi’s Chief Product Officer. “It rose to fame during an era of unrivalled creativity in art and music.” “We’re excited to introduce a modern and slimmer take on this classic. It’s equally and subversively sexy on both men and women,” she says. Today, the humble pair of blue jeans has a global presence, reaching nearly every country in the world. Even with so many

20

different types of jeans available, people are preferring vintage for their unique style and history. “There’s no better time to launch the 505C,” says Karyn. “We noticed people are buying the 505 vintage, particularly girls, because the vintage 505 has a zipper, creating a flatter front and that amazing inverted heart, perky bum thing that vintage Levi’s do, so we wanted to recreate some of that.” Despite being reinvented, the 505C, still offers a timeless fit and a worn-in, rocked-in aesthetic. The classic straight leg and rigid denim is still a feature for the 505C, but you don’t need to call Joey Ramone to rip your jeans for you; a custom rip has already been added to the knee. The 505Cs have a sense of history attached to them, but the modern twist still allows you the space and individuality to etch your own history as you wear them. LEVIS.COM.AU

WHEN TWO BECOME ONE

SOCIAL INFLUENCER JASMINE SANDERS WEARS A HEAD-TO-TOE

Commercial collaborations are proving to be a unique way to build your business, writes Emmy-Lou McKean. SIMPLY PUT, A collaboration (also commonly referred to as a “collab”) occurs when multiple brands or individuals work together to produce something new. An effective collab enables the participating parties to compete in new markets, while also offering unique competitive advantages in their own sectors. With so many collaborations proving beneficial for all players, it’s no wonder we have seen a recent rise in this effective marketing technique. In recent times, Uber has collaborated with Spotify to give passengers access to their favourite playlist while they ride, while Apple and Hermes teamed up to create a stylish wristwatch that acts as both a mobile phone and a coveted high-fashion accessory. The possibilities of such

LOOK FROM THE LATEST REEBOK X TRISTAN EATON COLLABORATION.

partnerships seem to be endless and are limited only by one’s imagination. Global brand Reebok has now teamed up with acclaimed street artist and designer Tristan Eaton to create a unique collection of street art-inspired yoga apparel. Reebok worked closely with Eaton to create three key silhouettes: a legging, bra and hot pant that can be worn separately or together for a bold head-to-toe look. Taking it a step further and proving, once again, the power of digital media, Reebok selected

American actress, model and social media star Jasmine Sanders to feature in the campaign. Sanders’ combination of lifestyle, fitness, friends and fashion, along with her impressive 1.6 million loyal Instagram followers, made her an ideal addition to the already stellar collaboration – appealing to the fitness- and fashion-conscious female consumer. It’s collaborations such as this that provide great examples of how any business, big or small, can benefit from teaming up and increasing their consumer market share.

And this year’s celebrations are set to be even bigger, with the 500-year anniversary of Das Bayerische Reinheitsgebot (Germany’s infamous ‘Beer Purity Law’). The law, which regulates how beer should be produced, was first passed in Bavaria in 1516 and soon spread throughout Germany. Oktoberfest Brisbane will mark the historic event with on-site exhibit 1516: Das Reinheitsgebot.

Oktoberfest Brisbane 7-9 & 14-16 October This year Oktoberfest Brisbane will introduce a new cashless system, which utilises a personal Digital Wallet facility and unique Smart Wristbands for seamless purchasing of beverages and ride tickets. The digital ticketing system uses RFID technology, allowing for your wristband to be loaded with prepaid credit (just like a Go Card) so festival-goers can pay with ease and avoid waiting in lengthy queues. Long-standing festival favourites will return to the program, including yodelling shows, Jimmy Rods Barber shop and the Pork Knuckle of Destiny charity auction in support of Youngcare, plus our favourite foodie stall holders, family events, rides and Animal Planet’s Snake Boss Reptile Show. MY PSYCHIC MEDIUM EXPERIENCE One of Australia’s leading psychic mediums reveals what it was like growing up with special abilities, writes Candice Jackson. JULIE MCKENZIE IS a highly-respected and sought-after psychic medium, with the honour of being the first Australian to win the International Psychic Challenge. She doesn’t call it a “gift”; Julie says she just has an innate ability to listen very well to the beings she calls Spirit. “No psychic or medium in the world is going to be 100 per cent correct. I still lose my keys, stub my toe and do silly things,” Julie says. However, life for this Queenslander has always been very different. When she was just four years old, Julie and her mother were in a car accident. While they were being examined in the hospital, Julie told her mother everything was going to be OK. She knew this because she could see a big, beautiful blue angel surrounding her mother. Unsurprisingly, Julie’s mother was quick to request that the doctors assess her daughter because she was “hallucinating”. Julie and her parents lived on a farm, where electricity was limited to two hours at night for dinner and the news. “I’d say something like ‘There’s been an earthquake in India and 5000 people have been killed.’ When the TV came on, 26

the newsreader would say the exact same thing. Dad used to get a bit freaked out and would tell me to go clean my room.” It wasn’t until Julie started attending a mainstream school that she realised not everyone could see or hear the things that she could. I arrived at Julie’s personal reading room with an open mind, ready to see what the reading would reveal about my energies, future and past. The first thing Julie did was hold my hands and complete what she called a “body scan”, which pinpointed my current and past ailments and quirks, as well as my connection to family and loved ones. This assessment wasn’t as simple as “They’re very kind to you” or “You’ve had issues with them in the past”. Each comment was specific to one person and wouldn’t have made sense if applied to anyone else in the family. Claiming to have connected with my late grandfather, Julie was able to describe the specifics of his ageing, illness and cause of death; she also said he flashed pictures of boats and a shield that “should make sense to you”. I asked my parents about this later and,

“NO PSYCHIC MEDIUM IS GOING TO BE 100 PER CENT CORRECT. I STILL LOSE MY KEYS, STUB MY TOE AND DO SILLY THINGS.”

to my surprise, my dad explained that my grandfather had been in the navy. “They say you’re a little psychic or a little psycho,” laughs Julie. While cynicism can cast a bad light on what she does, Julie does encourage scepticism; she says it’s always the ones who have never given her a chance that are quick to put her in the “psychic/pyscho box”. Two other Style staff also received readings from Julie. You can read about our experiences in full detail on stylemagazines.com.au READ MORE ONLINE

CLEAR MIND, CLEAR BODY Meditation can have remarkable health benefits, but where do you start? Paige Booth explains how to clear your mind of chatter. MINDFULNESS This flow-like meditation technique is great for beginners or those who get easily distracted; it’s all about focusing on your surroundings. There are various ways to practice this, but for a simple approach you can try sitting in a park and hearing each sound and thought for what they are, before letting them go. FOCUSED This is the most well-known form of meditation, and is performed while concentrating and sitting either on the floor or a chair. Focusing on your breathing will help your mind stay in the present moment. Although it can be difficult at first, focused meditation will help strengthen your mind. Try getting a piece of chocolate and placing it on your tongue. Resist the

temptation to eat it! Feel the taste on your tongue and focus on the sensation until it melts away. MANTRA Some people prefer to use a mantra or a repeated word to access a state of relaxation. These words or mantras don’t necessarily have to mean anything – for example, the word “om” is often used simply because of the calming vibration that it brings. Start by saying the word in your mind and then letting it gradually become louder until you are repeating it out loud. Your breathing should become succinct, which will allow you to relax. This method works well for people who have a tendency to become stressed or anxious.

THE COLOUR OF LOVE Master Jeweller Mark Cotterell shares his expertise and explores the beauty of coloured stones. WE ALL HAVE that one colour that brings a smile to our face and warms the heart. Coloured stones are vivacious and bold, they catch the eye and, although you may not realise it, they are actually more traditional than diamonds. Diamonds have only really become de rigueur over the past century or so, whereas coloured stones such as rubies, sapphires and emeralds have a long, rich history. Desired by kings and queens alike, extravagant coloured jewellery dates back in history as far as the Egyptians. The less conventional style makes a greater statement than a regular diamond piece, flaunting your personality and showing a truer reflection of your originality. And when rare, coloured gems of high quality are combined with diamonds in a skilfully crafted design, the results are utterly breathtaking. By sourcing rare and individual gems and using detailed craftsmanship, Master Jeweller Mark Cotterell creates flawless pieces that

are hard to resist. One gemstone that has firmly established itself as a favourite of Marks is tanzanite. Discovered in 1967 and named by New York jeweller’s Tiffany, the deep blue stone can only be found in the East African State of Tanzania. Another favourite of his is spinel; a natural gemstone found in some of the most important gemstone fields in existence, including the Mogok area in Burma. These days, opting for a oneof-a-kind jewellery piece that has been tailored to showcase your true individuality is the height of luxury. Thankfully, choosing coloured stones allows us the opportunity to go bigger and bolder while still keeping the budget in mind. This is one jewellery trend that will keep you smiling, every time you see that splash of colour. MARK COTTERELL MASTER JEWELLER 15 RACECOURSE RD, HAMILTON P 3607 9197 MARKCOTTERELL.COM.AU

THE CREATIVE COLLAB Following the sell-out success of Balmain, it’s time for a sneak peek at H&M’s new collaboration with Kenzo, writes Paige Booth. FAST FASHION COMPANY H&M has revealed a new collaboration like no other. Joining forces with luxury label Kenzo, they have created striking, bold, prints that will take the world by storm. The vibrant style will come as no surprise to Kenzo fans, with patterns available on turtleneck tops, cropped jeans and high-waisted leggings. Even the beloved cross body bag has been reimagined with bright colours and tiger stripes to match the eclectic jungle theme. The humble parka is gracing the collection as well, with the addition of a removable printed collar.

But the creativity doesn’t stop there! In their new lookbook, H&M unveiled the ambassadors for the new collection. These ambassadors include young artists, activists and creatives who break the mould just like the H&M x Kenzo collaboration. One of these talented youths is Amy Sall (pictured), a New York-based student, activist, and writer for Sunu: Journal of African Affairs, Critical Thought + Aesthetics. She will represent the brand alongside Juliana Huxtable, (pictured), who is an artist, poet and DJ also based in New York. In the first round of campaign shots for the

collaboration, Amy and Juliana both wear tiger print jerseys and matching high-waisted leggings paired with black leather gloves and jacquard knitted tiger-sock shaft boots. Other brand ambassadors include musicians and makeup artists. Bursting with individuality and creativity, the inspiring ambassadors are reflective of this fresh and original collaboration. The H&M x Kenzo collection will be available online and in more than 250 H&M stores worldwide from November 3, so keep your eyes peeled! HM.COM/AU

HOW TO FAKE LONGER LEGS With spring just around the corner, it’s time to get those pins out of hibernation and back into action! Here’s how to make your legs look longer in no time, writes Amber Lowther. NUDE HEELS A heel in a shade similar to your skin tone will disguise where your foot begins and make your legs look miles long. Wear with a skirt or high‑waisted shorts to make the most it!

OVER-THE-KNEE BOOTS It’s still chilly outside, so over-the-knee boots are a must-have. They elongate the leg with minimal effort. Wear with a skirt for a sexy look!

HIGH-WAISTED Wearing anything high-waisted will make it seem like your waistline sits (surprise!) higher and your legs will look like they’re never-ending!

VERTICAL LINES Wearing vertical lines on your bottom half will not only draw attention to your oh-so-lengthy legs, it will actually trick people into thinking there’s more length than there really is.

WIDE-LEG PANTS A pair of wide-leg pants can do wonders for your perceived leg length. Make sure you wear them with heels to get the effect you want.

ONE COLOUR HEAD-TO-TOE Any shade worn head-to-toe will make you stand out and it will be hard to tell where your legs start and end. The darker the colour, the more effective!

34

BONUS TIP: USE SHIMMERING BODY OIL ON YOUR LEGS TO MAKE YOUR SKIN GLOW. CROPPED JACKETS Cropped jackets make your torso appear shorter and shift the primary focus to your legs. Just like with high-waisted items, a change in cut will have your legs looking longer for sure. READ MORE ONLINE

Marriott Hotel boasts one of the city’s best vantage points for spectacular Riverfire views!

DO YOU FEEL THE BUZZ? It’s time to celebrate this beautiful city we call home, writes Erin Leckie. FIRST WE HAD two separate events: Riverfestival, the annual toast to our city’s iconic river, and Brisbane Festival, the biannual government initiative aimed at fostering the local arts sector. But by 2009, Brisbanites wanted more. The two events combined and one epic superfestival was born: a month-long celebration of arts, entertainment and our beautiful river city. The Brisbane Festival now runs for three weeks each September, culminating with the extraordinary fireworks display that is Riverfire. The event creates an unmistakable energy and a buzz that is felt throughout the entire city. Enjoyed by close to a million people in 2015, Brisbane Festival is once again set to wow audiences. The Arcadia pop-up will be a favourite

among families, with the cultural hub providing a wonderland of food, wine, music and magic. The Brisbane’s Marriot Hotel boasts one of the best vantage points in the city for the spectacular sights of Riverfire, and this year they are offering Brisbane locals and beyond an opportunity to take full advantage of their prime river-view location with their Riverfire Rooms Packages. The package includes overnight accommodation on Saturday 24th September and two

tickets to an exclusive Riverfire event hosted on the Hotel’s Riverside Terrace, with endless canapes and beverages on offer. Brisbane locals and visitors alike are encouraged to explore the Brisbane Festival and experience all the sights and sounds it has to offer. The Brisbane Festival will run from September 3-24. FASHION-FORWARD THINKING Creative passion and a shared vision led Becky Cooper and Bridget Yorston to transform their friendship into one of Australia’s top fashion labels, writes Emmy-Lou McKean. STRIKING A FINE balance between aspirational and achievable fashion, Australian label Bec & Bridge launched in 2003 with a unique approach to pushing the boundaries on contemporary style. Becky Cooper and Bridget Yorston created their namesake label with a meticulous eye for detail and a strong sense of who they wanted their collections to connect with. The premise: stylish clothing created for modern girls by designers who get them. The chic duo met at the University of Technology, Sydney and instantly hit it off. With their sleek designs, it wasn’t long before the pair made their mark in Australian fashion and beyond. With a love of fashion, creating their own label was never out of the question, but rather something that happened organically. “We can put it down to the year 2001 and an old pair of jeans that a friend handed to us and asked us to revamp,” says the girls. “From there, more friends heard about what we were doing and before we knew it, we had received an order for 200 pairs of 36

jeans from a store on the Gold Coast.” This is when the Bec & Bridge brand was born. It has since created a name for itself as one of Australia’s top labels worn by everyday women and seen on celebrities such as Taylor Swift, Kendall Jenner and Chrissy Teigan. The recent Bec & Bridge Resort collection is a celebration of an Indian summer and has been making silky waves through the fashion industry. Combining soft suedes with glowing embellishments, raw hand woven cottons and earthy tones, Bec and Bridge describe the key elements for their newest collection as “spirited, feminine and fierce.” The Bec & Bridge woman is youthful yet fashion forward and doesn’t take life too seriously. “She knows the trends but doesn’t feel the need to follow them. She’s social, active and loves a night out.” The pair keep this idea at the forefront of their designs when creating each collection, which is why each Bec & Bridge piece becomes a coveted item for any fashion-forward wardrobe.

“She knows the trends but doesn’t feel the need to follow them”

Napoleon and Lianna Perdis

TOTAL BAE Following in the footsteps of her beauty-guru father, Lianna Perdis makes her first foray into the world of cosmetics, writes Christie Sutherland. HAVING THE ABILITY to create your own makeup range at 16 years old is something most girls could only dream of – but that’s the reality for Lianna Perdis, eldest daughter of makeup magnate Napoleon Perdis. For the last 25 years running, Napoleon Perdis has created striking looks to match the dazzling designer ensembles featured at the Brisbane Ekka’s Natural Fibres Fashion Parade. While they were in town to do it all again at this year’s Royal Queensland Show, we stole a moment with the creative fatherdaughter duo to chat about the new collection and what it’s like to start dipping ones bronzing brush into the family business. For Lianna, makeup and skincare runs in her blood; watching her father do runway shows and being backstage is as much a part of her life as getting up early for school. “Since I was a little girl I’ve always loved makeup, beauty and fashion,” she says. “There’s actually a video of me at five years old using my little Barbie mirror [and] putting on red lipstick.”

REVEAL YOUNGER, HEALTHIER-LOOKING SKIN ONE LAYER AT A TIME WITH SIMPLY LASER.

Perfectly applied red lipstick, she adds – a challenge for some grown women, myself included, let alone a small child. The Total Bae range is her first foray into the family business and, wanting to get her hands dirty, Lianna travelled with her father picking out colours, testing product textures and formulations – even getting into the nitty-gritty of designing packaging and coming up with product names. As can be gathered, Total Bae has a youthful tone but Lianna insists it’s not just for the younger market. “It’s about feeling youthful, looking youthful,” she says. With packaging inspired by emojis, fruit and even roller-skates and featuring products such as the Hide It! concealer that comes in a shade entitled Uh-huh Honey, Total Bae definitely captures the current feel of the social media generation. Speaking with Napoleon himself, it’s clear just how proud he is of Lianna and her interest in the Napoleon Perdis brand. “It’s obviously easy for me to sing

“The only thing I really hold out for is making sure she is more aware than I was. I can’t ever stop the destiny of her learning, but I want her to at least be aware that if she still has to go through pain or hurt or challenge or disruption she’s at least able to spiral out,” he says. With a wisdom and maturity far beyond her 16 years, Lianna Perdis is shaping up to be her own makeup and beauty tour de force. Here at Style, we can’t wait to see what the future holds for the teenager and the Napoleon Perdis brand.

my daughters praises but really she holds her own and that’s good enough,” he says. When asked what it’s like seeing his daughter blossom into an entrepreneur, Napoleon says that he loves the idea of Lianna becoming involved in the brand. Due to Lianna’s influence the business can now cross between generations more than ever before. His only hope is that he can instil in her more awareness about the world and the industry than he had when he was just starting out.

HOLE IN ONE Watch out Brisbane, there’s a new player in town. AN OLD CHURCH in the heart of Fortitude Valley is getting a new lease on life. The dark walls are being decked out with bold art décor, the vastness is being filled with grass and there are mini golf balls rolling around. Holey Moley Golf Club is set to open later this month and boy are we excited! What was once an old church, then a nightclub, is now a putt putt course with a cocktail bar. From the people behind Strike Bowling, Holey Moley is a leisureentertainment space that ups the ante on regular mini golf; refashioning the sport and giving Brisbane a whole new level of entertainment in the process. Forget those long, tedious golf courses and welcome new thematic surrounds. There will be two ninehole courses to choose from, with 40

each of the 18 holes having its own unique theme. Combining the classic pastime with pop culture, the themed courses include puppets, surfing culture, classic carnival, Alice in Wonderland, Snoop Dogg, Nirvana, Game of Thrones, a retro video game mash-up and many more. Delight in this sensory putt putt experience while enjoying a cocktail from their extensive cocktail bar. There will also be a flavour-filled food truck menu on offer because, as you know, mini golf can be tiresome work. LONDON CALLING

“I WANT PEOPLE TO VIEW MY ART AND FEEL EMOTIONS OF HAPPINESS AND JOY.”

Forget Jackson Pollock; fresh talent is here, writes Emma Duffy. BRISBANE GIRL BRITTANY Redman first realised she wanted to be an artist after painting on a large canvas. After selling some of her pieces, Brittany packed her bags and moved to London to kick start her career. Since making the move overseas, Brittany has had her work displayed in a number of local galleries and has even commissioned a few larger pieces. Her most recent completion: a 43 metre hoarding (plywood boards to cover construction) in Peckham Rye for Inhabit Homes. The display, titled I WAS HERE, attracted a lot of attention and is the artwork Brittany is proudest of. “I was so excited for such a big challenge – it was one of the reasons I moved over to London to further my career as an artist and to challenge

myself,” says Brittany. Crazy colours, heavy layers and varying textures set Brittany apart from the rest; her unique style has an abstract expressionist feel to it. Her brand name, Happy as Flynn, comes from the idiom “happy as Larry”, which reflects Brittany’s gregarious personality and art. She made it her own by using her dog’s name, Flynn. Despite swapping the south side of Brisbane for South West London, Brittany still has strong ties to her beloved Queensland home. “I miss a lot of things about Brisbane,” she says. “The obvious ones are friends, family and pets, though I also miss the boutique quirky cafés. I will always call Brisbane my home.” HAPPYASFLYNN.BIGCARTEL.COM

ROLLS BAYCE: Dean from Rolls Bayce is no stranger to Bigsound and said he was impressed with the progression the festival has made over its fifteen years. “We’re really thrilled to be playing Bigsound again, the party gets bigger and better every year. To be a part of this lineup is super exciting, it’s a really diverse bunch of new and upcoming artists doing great things,” he says. The Brissie boys will perform their indie psych sounds in front of a hometown audience on the 8th.

THE NEXT BIG THINGS Sampa The Great, Japanese Wallpaper and Dean from Rolls Bayce chat to Caitlyn Spanner in the lead up to this year’s Bigsound Festival. OVER THREE MASSIVE nights in September, Bigsound festival will grace the streets of Fortitude Valley for its fifteenth year running. Responsible for kicking off the careers of now international acts such as Flume, Courtney Barnett and The Temper Trap, Bigsound 2016 is set to introduce some of Australia’s most promising new artists on the cusp of international success to Brisbane audiences.

SAMPA THE GREAT: Hailing from Zambia, Sampa The Great (Sampa Tempo) is an artist with a flare for relaying thought provoking themes through her music. After opening for Kendrick Lamar earlier this year, she is set to wow audiences with her soulful sounds at this year’s Bigsound Festival. Here’s what she had to say about the event, “Bigsound Festival is a great opportunity for artists to showcase their work to both the industry and their peers... Sometimes we don’t really get to see who is around and see their performances because we are working on our own stuff. But it will be exciting to see what everyone is doing and be inspired and grow as an artist.”

42

From the 7th to the 9th of September, witness over 150 acts across 15 venues. The aptly named Bigsound has a line up so damn huge, you’d be forgiven for not knowing where to start. Never fear, we’ve narrowed down three of the acts that are sure to make an impact. Sampa the Great, Japanese Wallpaper and Dean from Rolls Bayce chatted to Style about Bigsound 2016. HEAD TO BIGSOUND.ORG.AU FOR TICKETS AND MORE INFORMATION.

JAPANESE WALLPAPER: After winning Triple J’s Unearthed High competition in 2014, Japanese Wallpaper (Gab Strum) has gone from strength to strength to find himself as a major player in the Australian music scene. Gab echoed Sampa’s excitement for Bigsound and said he couldn’t wait to catch up with fellow musicians, “I haven’t been up to Bigsound Festival, or played at any conferences before, so I’m just really excited to hang out with a lot of friends and bands I admire. It is always really inspiring being around that many great artists, and it’s a great opportunity for everyone to showcase their music to industry people from all around the world. SEPTEMBER16

FASHION SUMMER lives here Indooroopilly Shopping Centre celebrates the arrival of spring summer fashion in the most stylish way.

Dissh Gypsy Girl High Neck dress $69; Sambag Natalia Bell Sleeve blouse $370; Mimco Origami Duo Hip bag $299; Emblazon ring stack $129; Swarovski Flash ring set $179; Jo Mercer Dean brogues $189.95

Fashion blogger and typographer Jasmine Dowling takes us into her ever-changing creative portal and the inner workings of her collaboration with Indooroopilly Shopping Centre.

Where did your passion start and how did you make it a reality? My passion has always been in visual fields. Growing up, I moved between wanting to be a fashion designer and getting my mum to help me sew clothes, to wanting to be an architect, then I ended up studying graphic design! It wasn’t until an assignment at university that I switched from digital designing to physically creating with my hands. That process, and seeing improvement from constant practice, had me hooked. Making it a reality came from a whole lot of things: timing, naivety, motivation, (a whole lot of) hard work, sacrifice of any sort of social life for a while there, being quite business-minded and lastly, I had nothing to lose.

Tell us about your brand and how you turned what you do into a “Oh, that’s Jasmine” recognition? (It is pretty impressive in a saturated world). My brand has always been very personal to me. Its aesthetic and character is one that is personal and one that evolves as I do. It isn’t trying to be someone else or move with trend. It is my view. I think that is how I can explore different creative ventures without it feeling alien because behind it will always be my point of view. Always grounded in aesthetics with a hint of chaos and wit. I know it is ever-changing, but what is the favourite part of your day-today creative lifestyle? I think that I have the freedom to explore different sides of my creativity and move through them freely. I never let myself feel trapped into one form of creation. In one day I DO WHAT YOU LOVE AND HOPE THAT can move between hand SOMEONE ELSE WILL LOVE IT TOO. lettering, photographing dead flowers, creating a flat-lay for a client and What is your typical creative then move onto editing an outfit post process? It really depends in what area in the afternoon. They all inspire each I am creating. If I am creating visual other but allow me to express through imagery for a client, I will always start different avenues at one time. by creating a mood or story around the How has it been collaborating with product featured. So if it is homewares, Indooroopilly Shopping Centre? I will think about how we would interact It has been a lot of fun. When I was with the product, what time of day would approached with the opportunity I felt it we use it, what would the ideal mood be was such an amazing fit as Indooroopilly when using the product and then create Shopping Centre has always been my own fantasy around that. For me it my local centre and even holds one isn’t about creating a staged reality, but of my first memories of shopping as something that is real and beautiful at the a child. The centre has blossomed same time. For me it is about creating so much over the years and contains something “perfect” then adding chaos. some of my favourite stores and

places to eat so I couldn’t really ask for a better combination to work with. What has been your favourite part about the collaboration? I really loved exploring all of the retailers to find all of the products for my flat lay content. It was the mix of taking my aesthetic but also having so much choice to work with. I usually just work with what is around me so having the choice of anything in a whole shopping centre was like a dream come true. How do you come up with concepts for your own projects, and how does this differ from working on collaborations? Working on collaborations gives me more direction from the start, I get to take my creativity and combine it with a client’s brand or audience. It allows me to create something unique that I wouldn’t have been able to do on my own. Whereas for my own projects I try to really keep myself in mind, as selfish as that sounds. With my work now being shared to a wide audience, it is hard not to let that audience affect your work. It would be very easy to create something that the majority would like but personally wouldn’t make me feel anything. With my personal work I try to keep it true to my own creativity and what I love.

BASED IN SUNNY Sydney, designers Laura Singleton and Emma Haws are passionate about making high-end essentials affordable. Established in 2013, their label, Ruby Sees All, is brimming with an intriguing mixture of minimal, monochromatic basics and bold, statement party wear. The line is redefining corporate couture by bringing a modern, feminine edge to seemingly ordinary office attire. Blurring the boundaries between relaxed and polished, Ruby Sees All is all about clean, tailored lines and fresh, youthful silhouettes. Laura and Emma explain that their aim is to create pieces that will seamlessly transition between settings. “We recognised a gap in the market for modern women’s work wear,” they explain. “We believe that each of our garments is versatile 48

enough to be worn into the evening and at events.” The creative pair are renowned for spotting trends right off the runway and making them well and truly ready to wear. “Each season we start with trend research to see what colours, cuts and trims are dominant. We [then] begin researching our prints, sometimes developing our own.” Ruby Sees All is bridging the gap between the runway and retail, staples and statement pieces and ultimately, work and play. Looking to the future, expect to see the new ‘Enlight’ collection hit our shores next Autumn, bringing with it a heavily futuristic vibe. The silky event wear and textured basics are sure to bring an added element of style and sophistication to our offices and beyond. SEPTEMBER16

FASHION FILE:

DANIEL AVAKIAN Always artistic and creative at heart, Sydney fashion designer Daniel Avakian believes success is about keeping your vision and your identity clear, writes Emma Duffy.

Daniel

DANIEL AVAKIAN HAD never dreamed of becoming a fashion designer, but all of that changed after watching one film. “I wanted to be an artist and first enrolled to study fine arts at the College of Fine Arts in Sydney,” Daniel says. After watching an Italian film about an orphan boy who became a tailor and, eventually, a designer, Daniel was inspired to enrol in fashion school. Since then, his career has blossomed and Daniel has recently launched the latest resort collection for his namesake label.

Paying homage to his teenage years, Daniel’s Resort ’17 Collection was inspired by ’90s minimalism and the designs were created with empowered women in mind. Timeless and contemporary design is a signature of the Daniel Avakian brand – something Daniel is mindful of when bringing his collections to life. “I always have a strong woman in mind as my designs are aimed at making women feel empowered and timeless,” he says. This year marked Daniel’s first time at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia.

He incorporated resort collections into the show and says this approach is necessary for Australia to become more competitive internationally. “I believe the resort collections at MBFWA were another leap forward for Australian fashion to be recognised on a world stage,” Daniel says. It was this move that inspired Daniel to push the boundaries of his brand’s signature style and motivated him to design and create a collection that defined the Daniel Avakian woman to the global fashion market. SPRING F E VER

PRE-SPRING SECRETS

Stay ahead of the game this spring summer season and shop now and style later, writes Sophie Catsoulis. IN THE WORLD of fashion, we always work one season ahead. As shoppers, you should do the same. Stock your wardrobe full of fresh, warm weather inspired pieces, right off the runway and be ready for anything when spring rolls around. CULOTTES Culottes are the perfect go-to pants. Exceptionally versatile and always comfortable, you can never go wrong with a good pair of culottes.

BASIC WHITE SHIRT A good white button-up is the ultimate style staple. This shirt is easily accessorised and effortlessly chic and is a welcome addition to every woman’s wardrobe. BOMBER JACKET It might seem strange to suggest investing in a jacket as the weather finally starts to heat up, but a basic bomber is transeasonal. Tie it around your waist or sling it

Bardot

over your shoulder until needed for an added element of edge. SLIP DRESS The super shiny and oh-so-sexy slip dress has had a resurgence in recent months. But this season, strip of the layer of fur and leather and show off some skin a sexy, springtime slip. MODERN DENIM JACKET I know what you’re thinking, you already have a denim jacket. But

we’re not talking about your run of the mill coat here, the new denim jacket is white, not blue - and did we mention boyfriend style? OFF-THE-SHOULDER TOP The statement piece of the season is without a doubt, the off-theshoulder top. Opt for dusty pink or bold, blue stripes for a pop of colour and show off your new-found tan with the super cute, strapless structure.

DESIGNER SPRING RACING

BOOST YOUR BATTERY LIFE

PROCESS MAKES PERFECT

SPRING IS IN the air and the season’s racing calendar is already off to a great start. This month we add a little garden-inspired frivolity to alfresco events including the polo, social race days and other trackside festivities. If your event is taking place on grass, there’s nothing quite like the simplistic elegance of a crisp, white picket fence. Add a pop of colour with oversized umbrellas, vibrant picnic rugs, luxurious throw cushions and relaxed lounge settings to create the ultimate celebration location for race day go-getters. If a raised floor or marquee is more suited to your event, you are presented with a lavish feast of styling options. Add a touch of sophistication with suspended chandeliers and sumptuous draping or keep things clean and fresh with timber panelling, cane furniture pieces and accents of citrus. Remember to keep any viewing areas open and free of obstacles to ensure that racing enthusiasts can enjoy uninterrupted views of all the trackside action.

MOST SMARTPHONE BATTERIES last almost a day before being completely depleted and in need of a recharge. Here are five simple things you can do to prolong the life of your battery. Turn off vibrations. The vibrate may be great for notifying you about incoming calls or messages when you need to keep the phone silent, but vibrations actually use more battery than a ringtone. Dim your screen. If your screen is set to be fully lit, the battery is getting used every time you use your phone. By reducing the brightness levels, you need less power to light the screen. Turn off your Bluetooth and WIFI. Repeated searches for these signals can drain your battery, as can automatic downloading of background data when connected to WIFI. Switch to low power mode. You don’t need to wait until your battery is nearly gone to switch over to low power mode. This feature basically disables any non-core phone features that are using battery and is great to conserve the last percentage of battery life.

WHAT’S COFFEE PROCESSING? Does it really effect the flavour? After the coffee cherries are picked, the way they are processed does have a dramatic effect on the flavours in your morning cup. Understanding the impact of different processing methods can leave you more empowered and knowledgeable when it comes to appreciating different brews. During the natural process, whole coffee cherries are spread in a thin layer to dry. This method results in a heavier, fruitier cup. At the other end of the spectrum is the washed process, where the skin and flesh of the cherries are removed before the beans are dried. The resulting cup of coffee is light, bright, clean and complex. In the middle of these two processes sit a plethora of different coffee processing methods. At Wolff Coffee Roasters, we serve many different coffees utilising the washed, honey and natural methods. The results are staggeringly different and yet equally delicious.

MINOR TRAVELS

THE AGE OF DISTRACTION

MAXIMUM BLING

FOR SEPARATED COUPLES with children, particularly those with family overseas, trying to organise overseas travel plans with the children can be difficult. Most problems regarding overseas travel arise due to lack of communication between parents, and high levels of distrust. If a parent wishes to take a child overseas, there are a few things for both parties to consider: does the child have a passport? Is the country in The Hague Convention? What’s the reason for travel? How long will they be away? What is the itinerary? Is the other parent able to contact the child? In urgent situations, steps can be taken to prevent a child travelling overseas with a court order and a Federal Police Airport Watch listing. Every situation is different so it is important to obtain specialist Family Law advice as early as possible in the organisational phase. Whether you are travelling with your child, or your ex-spouse is intending on travelling, communication is imperative.

WITH THE CONSTANT buzzing of phones and clattering of keyboards it can be difficult to stay focused at work. So how can you become less distracted and more productive on the job? • Spend 10 minutes in the morning decluttering, organising and prioritising your tasks by making a list and working through them in order of importance. Tick off each completed task to feel that sense of satisfaction. • Turn your email alerts off and limit the use of social media during work hours. That little beep can be both annoying and distracting. Switch off those notifications and notice the difference in your focus. • Curbing your social media usage can be hard, so if you find yourself reaching for your phone or scrolling Facebook too often, try using an app or Internet blocker such as Freedom. • At the end of each day, take time to pause and reflect on what you’ve completed and what you would like to achieve tomorrow. Doing this can help you to manage your tasks and set the agenda for a week of productivity.

IN THE LAST 10 years, the average size of a diamond engagement ring has doubled, with the most popular size for today’s brides being the 1.00ct. When it comes to diamonds, biggest isn’t always best, as the bling from a diamond ring has nothing to do with its size. The most important thing to consider is actually the skill of the diamond cutter who has expertly unlocked this stone’s beauty. Perfectly cut diamonds, such as a Passion8 stone, take up to six times longer to cut and will return 99 per cent of the light. This is what will give off that diamond sparkle that people will see (and envy) from all the way across the room. I always believe the greatest compliment you can receive about a ring is someone saying, “Why doesn’t my diamond sparkle like yours?” Perfectly cut diamonds will sparkle for longer than generic cuts. So for a diamond that sparkles more than any other, go for the Passion8, Hearts and Arrows diamonds.

RENOVATION READY

MAKING A PROFIT

KNOW YOUR PAINTS

AN UNSTABLE PROPERTY market, coupled with an influx in apartment completions, is driving people to upgrade their homes with renovations. Kitchen upgrades are popular as they tend to add the most value to your property. People are opting for natural products rather than man-made ones like reconstituted stone; surfaces such as granite and marble are making big waves in the industry. Homeowners tend to appreciate the “dug out of the earth” character that natural materials have, as well as adding more overall value to the house. Steam ovens are the latest must-have kitchen appliance. Once reserved for commercial kitchens, the steam oven takes the rookie out of cooking, making it appealing for any household kitchen. If you’ve got a big kitchen or are looking to create one, steam ovens are a worthy investment. Cooking your food using small injections of steam, the oven keeps your food moist and tender while it’s cooking. No matter the scale of your renovations, proper planning is as important as the execution.

OWNING A RENTAL property can be a great investment, but when it comes to making a profit there are many factors to consider. The quality of the suburb in which you buy will influence both the types of tenants you attract and how often you face vacancies. Locations with growing employment opportunities will tend to attract more tenants. Other things to keep in mind include property taxes and insurance expenses. If the average rent is not going to cover your expenses, then you have to keep looking. When searching for a potential rental property, take caution if you come across an unusually high number of listings from one particular suburb – this can either signal a seasonal cycle or a suburb that has “gone bad.” Being sure about the cause behind this before you buy is important as it can affect profits. With many varying features for a profitable rental property, it pays to seek advice from a real estate professional before purchasing a property.

A PAINTING PROJECT can become extremely involved as surface preparation and scaffold setup requires time and attention to detail. In fact, in some cases these tasks can take up to fifty per cent of the total project cost. So it pays to be well-researched in the type of paint and equipment you are using. When surfaces such as cement render or concrete blockwork is to be painted, the most appropriate paint type is a waterproofing membrane that is high build, moisture resistant and flexible. The characteristics of this product will protect the underlying substrate from the elements as well as allowing a degree of movement to occur without breaking the paint film. Enhanced properties such as UV resistance also need to be taken into consideration when deciding on an appropriate paint system. Seeking professional advice and obtaining a paint coating specification prior to the commencement of works will ensure your job is carried out properly.

HEALTHY DISCUSSION

SPRING EYEWEAR TRENDS

AN OPERA OF FINE DETAIL

THE ART OF healthy discussion is rare. At all times, we must remember and respect that we cannot control the other party with whom we are communicating. That is the first reality that we need to learn to honour. Initiating healthy levels of discussion can be constructive; however, when a disagreement arises, it can be hard to be respectful of differing opinions, even if it’s extremely important for us to do so. When it comes to refining the art of discussion, regardless of whether it is with a teenager, colleague, elder or lover, the best way to keep a discussion amicable is to understand that you are neither the most important nor the least important person in the room. We all have something of value to offer each other. Being a respectful listener who doesn’t interrupt, offer unsolicited advice or roll their eyes in disagreement can guarantee a future of healthy discussion. Let’s ensure we bring integrity to our table instead of immaturity, so that everyone can be heard and respected.

YOU AREN’T READY for spring until you’ve found the perfect pair of sunglasses. This year, the runways featured a theme of eclecticism, where designers played with prints, textures and flourishes like lace, embroidery and crystal details. While you likely already have a staple pair of sunnies you keep on heavy rotation, mix it up and refresh your look this spring; just in time for beach days and the races. Extravagance aside, the 2016 spring and summer runways show the details and overall aesthetic make the humble pair of sunnies a stylish addition to any outfit. This spring, oversized sunglasses are an absolute must. Cat eye sunnies still reign supreme, while intriguing geometric frames make for a high impact silhouette. Aviators and dark, reflective lenses remain a firm favourite, gold and glitter add a fun, sparkly touch while the colour blue keeps popping up everywhere. In Queensland, its extremely important to invest in a good quality pair of sunglasses and these days, shopping for them can be lots of fun!

WE’VE BECOME EXPERTS in the Spanish style of yesteryear. Wil Valor constructed the majority of the men’s costumes for Opera Queensland’s The Barber of Seville, which played at QPAC and is now touring regionally. When creating suits for opera singers, you can’t just get them off the rack; these suits must allow the singers to move around the stage while singing in full voice. They have to be expertly tailored to provide the perfect fit and they must exude confidence. It’s been an exciting experience helping these outstanding singers perform at their very best for the adoring crowds. When you look good, you feel good. The boost of confidence that the perfect outfit brings allows you to perform at your highest levels, which is exactly what we’ve always aimed to achieve with our suits. Attention to detail has always been critical to success here at Wil Valor. Working with the amazing people at Opera Queensland and having such strict requirements has reinforced the need to get the finer points perfect.

PHOTOGRAPHY: THIS IS LIFE PHOTOGRAPHY

DREAM CAPTURES Jaime Ellis from This Is Life Photography shares five tips on how to work with your photographer to create wedding photos you love. SCROLLING THROUGH PINTEREST will give you a little insight into the world of beautiful wedding photography. If you think photos like these are out of reach, think again; This Is Life Photography owner Jaime Ellis gives us her insider tips on how to get the most out of your photographer and create your dream wedding snaps. BUILD RAPPORT WITH YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER Do you feel comfortable around them? Can you be yourself? Make sure you meet them face-to-face before booking them in, even if it’s over Skype. ACT NATURAL Try to avoid looking at the camera; this can look posed and doesn’t always yield the best results. 56

Instead, look at your partner. Make them giggle. Hold them close and let your eyes drift naturally through your surroundings. Whisper something silly in their ear and let your photographer capture the results. RELAX Don’t overthink what you are doing in front of the camera. If you’re feeling nervous, take a few deep breaths and relax. Think about the milestone you’ve achieved and how you want to remember it. COMMUNICATE IDEAS Most photographers are pretty excited when they get the opportunity to bring an out‑of‑the‑box idea to life, so if you want to try something

different, let them know! Remember to have a discussion beforehand about the locations you are keen to use for the bridal portraits to make sure they’re suitable. If you’re stuck for ideas, ask for your photographer’s input or (even better!) visit the area together. BOOK IN AN ENGAGEMENT SHOOT Not only will this give you some gorgeous photos, it will also help you build that all-important rapport with your photographer and give you an opportunity to get comfortable in front of the lens before your big day. MODERN BRIDESMAID The bride’s greatest ally is enjoying an increasingly edgy dress code, writes Sophie Catsoulis. GONE ARE THE days of the textbook wedding. In 2016, a couple’s special day can consist of almost anything, from a soiree to skydiving. The role of the bridesmaid is also evolving. Sure, the obligatory flower-choosing, dress-holding tasks remain, but at least in this increasingly fashion-forward world we no longer have to fake a smile in photos while clad in the most hideous dress to ever see the light of day. Considerate brides all over the globe have finally realised that ugly bridesmaid dresses just don’t look good in wedding photos and they’ve started to set their sights on dresses that are significantly more stylish. So wake up from your traumatic teal taffeta nightmare and get ready to embrace the dawn of a new age: it’s time for the era of the modern bridesmaid. Think textured two-pieces, lavish lace, bare knees and (believe it or not) black gowns. Pastels are ever-present, but are often stylemagazines.com.au

infused with a dusty hue – blush pink is the quintessential case. Mismatched lengths, cuts and shades are finally enabling every girl to cater for her idiosyncrasies without straying too far from the overriding theme. Brides-to-be can comfortably give their bridesmaids free rein to select their very own variation of a signature style. Zimmermann serves as one of the leaders in the realm of contrasting cuts and colours. Off-the-shoulder, strapless or high neck, there’s sure to be a style to suit every shape. The more daring can even opt for an array of tones. Complement every colour and bring an added element of brightness to the altar this spring.

SAY ‘I DO’ TO YOU

IT’S HEALTHY AND NORMAL TO ENJOY YOUR FAVOURITE FOODS IN BALANCE BY LISTENING TO WHAT YOUR BODY NEEDS.

Wesley LifeShape Clinic shares tips on maintaining healthy habits and a balanced lifestyle in the lead up to your wedding day and beyond. EAT REGULAR MEALS Eating every two to three hours will keep your energy levels consistent while you’re busy finalising those last-minute details. With regular eating habits, you’re also less likely to over-eat or make poor choices. TAKE A BREATH When we experience increased levels of stress, our bodies do not respond as well to leptin, the hormone that makes us feel full. This explains why chronic stress can be tied to an increase in appetite and stress-induced weight gain. Take some time to manage your stress and eat mindfully. Ask yourself if you’re really hungry before reaching for those extra snacks. 58

FOOD IS NOT THE ENEMY It is important to maintain a healthy relationship with food. Many brides put pressure on themselves to follow rigid diets, but it’s healthy and normal to be able to enjoy foods in balance and listen to what your body needs. STAY ACTIVE If you’re time-poor, try interval training or 30-minute resistance workouts at home. Maximising your incidental activity throughout the day is key.

SEEK EXPERT ADVICE If you’ve had enough of trialling unsustainable fad diets, Wesley LifeShape Clinic can help you feel your very best on your wedding day. FOOD+DRINK VIETNAMESE, YES PLEASE!

Beef and Wasabi Mayo rice paper rolls

Experience the perfect balance of sweet and spicy at Fish Lane’s zesty new kid on the block, writes Emmy-Lou McKean. NESTLED IN SOUTH Brisbane’s buzzing Fish Lane, Hello Please is serving up a fresh Vietnamese-inspired menu that is designed to be mixed, matched, shared and enjoyed. On approach, the location could be mistaken for a laneway in the back streets of New York City. A street-art mural of Muhammad Ali lined with festoon lights welcomes you to the open-air restaurant as a train bustles past overhead. I follow a familiar scent, reminiscent of a street in Vietnam, and arrive at a shipping container filled with a tight team of staff, energetic in their third lunch service since opening. We are met by co-owner Maris Cook and shown to our park bench-style seats in the urban alfresco dining area. Smooth beats hum in the background as we take in the sights and delights of the allencompassing venue, which is unlike any other in Brisbane. To start, Maris brings us each a fizzy signature Hello Please mocktail, the orange blossom and lychee soda complements our Beef and Wasabi Mayo rice paper rolls. Fresh and finely chopped cucumber, carrot, lettuce and mint is wrapped with stylemagazines.com.au

succulent rare beef and dipped generously in a bitey Nouk Cham sauce. Our mains arrive shortly after and my fellow Styler tries the Coconut Chicken Salad. It’s a delightful combination of cold, poached chicken, chopped cucumber, beans, sprouts and herbs tossed in a light and creamy dressing; a delicious and smooth taste that is nothing like you’d expect. Next I try the colourful Beef Vermicelli Salad. Tender rare beef strips lay atop a generous serving of thin and tangy noodles. The cold noodles are complemented by a selection of finely-slivered Asian herbs and vegetables, sprinkled with peanuts for a delightful and punchy crunch. The salad is dressed with Nouk Cham sauce, leaving your lips tingling with every bite. Maris tells us that his vision for Hello Please was to create a Vietnamese-inspired eatery with a vibe similar to that of the energetic food laneways in Melbourne, where he gained most of his food industry experience. “We want to focus on our fresh and punchy flavours as well as creating an atmosphere where people feel they can come to enjoy an atmosphere that is a little different,” says Maris.

SPRING FRUITS Superior Fruit owner Peter Maniatis discusses spring fruit and alternatives to popular superfoods.

Peter recommends sticking to produce that is in season as it is both cost effective and healthier for you.

SPRING HAS ARRIVED and it is time to welcome fresh, seasonal produce. Peter Maniatis, owner of Superior Fruit and Wendy’s Kitchen, is excited to see fruity-favourites such as peaches, nectarines, raspberries, blueberries and green grapes all make a colourful return during the Spring season. Despite the abundance of produce available, Peter advises never to waste fruit that is slightly overripe, blemished or bruised. Instead, cut it up and store in the freezer to make a cold fruit smoothie during the warm weather. There’s no denying that superfoods are a healthy trend. But while you may be partial to kale in your salad or acai in your smoothie, these popular products can become quite expensive. Peter recommends finding alternative superfoods rather than opting for the flavour of the month. “Marketing does wonders for a product but unfortunately, due to supply and demand, it can

overinflate prices. A few years ago we couldn’t give kale away and now it’s $4-$5 a bunch,” he says. Alfalfa sprouts are a great alternative, they are inexpensive and in terms of nutritional goodness are equivalent to an entire iceberg lettuce. Peter recommends sticking to produce that is in season as it is both cost effective and healthier for you. Developing a friendly and trusted relationship with your local fruit retailer is essential. Taking the time to communicate with your grocer will ensure you’re always satisfied with the quality of the produce and the service. “You should feel completely comfortable and very satisfied purchasing produce to feed you and your family. You feed their family and they feed yours,” says Peter. SUPERIOR FRUIT AND WENDY’S KITCHEN 365 HONOUR AVE, GRACEVILLE P 3379 7508 FACEBOOK.COM/SUPERIORFRUIT

DO IT YOURSELF Finish the week with a refreshing beverage; here’s how to host cocktail hour at home, writes Paige Booth. SOIRÉE ESSENTIALS Living in the Sunshine State allows us to enjoy gorgeous weather all year round. Music is essential at any party so be sure to create a playlist that will have you grooving all afternoon. Choosing your cocktail recipes beforehand will help when delegating ingredients to bring, and printed copies of the recipes will have your guests expertly mixing their cocktails all afternoon. TIME TO NIBBLE As well as a bar station, creating a food bar with a selection of nibbles is an ideal option for guests to try a bit of everything, rather than filling up on a heavy meal. Nibbles such as charcuterie boards, tear-andshare loaves and even nachos are convenient options that require minimal effort while looking (and tasting) delicious. 65

VINO QUENCH Now that Brisbane has endured its two weeks of winter, it’s time to indulge in some refreshing vino, writes Morgan Gollendge, sommelier from Blackbird Bar & Grill. MOST BRISBANITES GET a kick in their step when they throw off the doona and turn on the AC, and wine should be similarly fresh and lively. 2008 BRASH HIGGINS “BLOOM” CHARDONNAY $55 This is exciting stuff. Brad Hickey has produced a 2008 Chardonnay aged biologically and oxidatively matured in the style used in France’s Jura region. For the novice, think sherry, but really looong sherry: golden, oxidative, sea mineral, caramel,

2015 RAVENSWORTH HILLTOPS NEBBIOLO $36 *Here’s where you need the spring lamb* Quintessential nebbiolo traits of sour cherry and rose petal coexisting together with a youthful juiciness and strong tannin backbone (to clean up all that oily lamb-ness), spice and dried herbs.

2015 MENGOBA BREZO ROSADO $27 This is the rosé of fried chicken: absolutely fingerlicking good. Mencia and godello grapes blend to produce a fun, flirty, bright, racy rosado with heaps of spicy complexity.

Lennons Restaurant focuses on gourmet comfort food with a modern twist.

Executive chef Cobey Davies

NEXT BEST FLAVOURS Executive Chef of Lennons Restaurant Cobey Davies puts a gourmet twist on traditional menu favourites. OPENING WITH THE Next Hotel in September 2014, Lennons Restaurant & Bar pays homage to the former and beloved Chifley at Lennons in Brisbane’s Queen Street. The central location of the new Lennons Restaurant boasts floor to ceiling windows overlooking Queen Street, a contemporary design and welcoming environment as well as a menu full of traditional favourites – focusing on gourmet comfort food with a modern twist. Lennons Restaurant’s Executive Chef Cobey Davies is incredibly in tune with the modernday palate and knows it’s quick food, not fast food, that people are after. Cobey, along with new sous chef Matthew Short, has changed the dynamic of the Lennons kitchen by creating a more relaxed environment. Nothing is too much trouble for the pair; affectionately named by staff as “the dynamic duo”, Cobey and stylemagazines.com.au

Matthew are always up for a challenge. With a penchant for inventive and timeconscious concepts that invigorate your palate with healthy, artisanal offerings, each dish is deceptively simple yet exceedingly well crafted. The quality of each ingredient remains completely honoured. Taking on the job as Executive Chef in June this year, Cobey’s culinary creativity, managerial skills and kitchen operations expertise has enabled Next Hotel’s Lennons Restaurant to establish itself as an adaptable yet immersive dining experience. Cobey launched a new a la carte breakfast menu this month, which has been designed to give guests more flexibility and choice when it comes to the restaurant’s breakfast options. Although breakfast classics such as smashed avocado are still available, Cobey is passionate about keeping his menu inventive. More

adventurous options include his breakfast burrito, which is served in a spiced pancake with grilled chorizo, turmeric potatoes and cumin yoghurt. Cobey is busy working on his own flavour and style to bring to Next Hotel, with his new lunch and dinner menus launching this month. As well as the new Lennons menus, Cobey will launch new menus for the Pool Terrace and the hotel’s in-room dining offering, Next Takeaway, at the end of this month. At Next Hotel’s Lennons Restaurant & Bar, the staff take pride in establishing relationships with hotel guests and restaurant diners alike, offering a personalised experience and creating an atmosphere of comfort and indulgence. HEALTH AND VITALITY

DUPLEX ULTRASOUND IS a diagnostic imaging technique that plays an important role in phlebology. It is relied upon for detecting venous disorders and then again during their treatment. Colour Doppler ultrasound is used during the initial consultation to investigate the venous system and “see” below the skin’s surface. A map is drawn up, showing normal and abnormal veins or valves. This map is then referred to when creating a treatment plan for the patient, identifying what method is most suitable. Endovenous Laser Therapy (ELT) and Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy (UGS) are two methods for treating varicose veins that utilise ultrasound during the procedure to ensure accuracy and efficiency. A review of the leg will be undertaken for one year post treatment. Ultrasound is used to confirm that the vein has been successfully occluded and there is no recurrence. All ultrasound is completed on-site at The Leg Vein Doctor by Dr Kemp, trained in Medical Sonography at the University of Sydney.

DID YOU KNOW that you no longer have to find the perfect eyeshadow or concealer to try and highlight your brow bone? With the invention of Brow Highlighters, you can now achieve a perfectly clean arch with the right amount of highlight on the brow bone. The Brow Bar’s Brow Highlighter is a crayon-like product that doesn’t require a brush to apply; after filling in your brows, simply apply the Brow Highlighter around the brow and blend out with your finger. When applied correctly, cleaning up around the edges of your brows with the Brow Highlighter is a foolproof way to hide any smudges from excess powder and achieve a high-definition finish with a subtle glow. What you don’t want is for your brow arches to be defined by a too-light concealer or highlighter. During a consultation session, our Arch Angels can make sure the shade of Brow Highlighter you pick is the right one for you. They can even give a tutorial on how to apply it correctly so you know that you’ll get perfect brows every time.

THE CELEBRITY LIFESTYLE can take its toll on health and vitality, so how do these reality TV stars maintain their vim and vigor? As more and more people look to them for inspiration, A-listers are turning to breakthrough new measures such as intravenous vitamin infusions (also known as IV Infusion Therapy) to improve their appearance. How does it work? Usually nutrients are distributed to your cells during digestion. If you’ve been unwell or enjoying yourself a little too much, your body can experience problems absorbing the required nutrients from the food you’re consuming. IV Infusion Therapy helps to deliver essential vitamins and nutrients directly to the cells through the bloodstream, bypassing the gut and quickly and effectively hydrating the entire body. At Cosmetic Image Clinics we have four IV Infusion Therapies: Skin Lightening, Hangover Cure, Immune Booster and Detox. To improve your overall wellbeing, contact us to see if a vitamin infusion may benefit you.

SPRINGTIME HAIR

EXPERIENCING FIREWORKS?

MY MIGRANT SICILIAN family interacted in ways I thought were normal, as that’s all I knew. For the most part, in every domain of my life, what I was taught and what was modelled has held me in great stead. I grew up with stories about the old ways of how my family lived, their values, foods, pastimes and all about my extended family. Photographs and artefacts of cultural and historical significance help me understand how my family behaves and what they value. There are limits, however, to learning about my family history relating only to a select number of photos, stories, or artefacts. In recent years, people have found that studying their family lineage and history has provided them with interesting stories, as well as insight into how it is that they have developed their own behaviours and values. Consider visiting your family’s country of origin to gain further insight into your family history and values, and a deeper understanding of one’s own identity.

IT’S TIME TO throw away the drab layers of winter and emerge from our cosy cocoons. Spring is here and it’s time for new hair. These current hair trends will keep you looking fabulous and will have heads turning everywhere you go this spring. Asymmetric cut: Unconventional cuts are big news on the runways at the moment. This fabulous look has become popular again since Kim Kardashian’s super sleek version of this daring classic made a comeback. Use colour to add texture: Another emerging trend seen on the runways is the use of colour to add texture, making your hair look alive and adding dimension. If you’ve been rocking a rich, dark brown all winter, shake it up by foiling your hair in different shades of chocolate. For blondes, just use lighter and darker tones of your current colour. Keep it groomed: Guys are still rocking a super groomed, styled look this season by keeping it super short on the sides and leaving a bit of length of top.

SEXUAL INTIMACY IS an important part of any couple’s relationship. Experiencing pain with intercourse (dyspareunia) may occur at any stage of a woman’s life and if left untreated, can lead to further problems in the future. There are many causes for painful intercourse, which can then lead to sexual dysfunction and/or vaginismus. This in turn changes the dynamics of the relationship and can result in disharmony and even breakdown of the relationship. Common causes of pain during and after intercourse include endometriosis, ovarian cysts, inadequate lubrication, perimenopause, menopause, thrush and other vaginal infections, urinary tract infection, sexually transmitted disease, irritable bowel syndrome, vaginal tears from childbirth or vigorous intercourse and scarring due to previous pelvic surgery. There are treatments available for all these problems so it is important not to delay seeking advice. If you are affected by any of these symptoms, see a gynaecologist right away.

FEEL GOOD LOOK GOOD Feeling good and looking great can go hand-in-hand with these simple beauty hacks, writes Emma Duffy. OUR INNER LANDSCAPE can have a significant effect on our outer appearance, and vice versa. When we feel great, we look great! But when we aren’t feeling our best our confidence can waver. Here are some foolproof tips and tricks that will keep you feeling good and looking fabulous. SAVING FACE They say the eyebrows frame the face, so invest in keeping them well groomed and you will always feel ready to take on the day. Lash tinting and lash extensions are also sure-fire ways to feel presentable from the minute you roll out of bed! This means you can head to your

next meeting or workout fresh-faced and with confidence. When it comes to your hair, eating a healthy, wellbalanced diet and avoiding excessive amounts of sugar and fats will give your hair the shine it may be lacking. NOURISH YOUR BODY The food we eat plays a huge role in how our bodies function, affecting how we think, look and feel. Cutting back on things such as sugar and alcohol while consuming more fresh produce and plenty of water will keep your body functioning properly. WORK IT OUT Exercise is one of the best ways to boost those feel-good endorphins. For the mind and body,

Rebalance Pilates and Yoga offers transformational programs that will increase core strength and help you tone and transform your body. For something a little more upbeat, try Barre Body; a complete body workout that fuses ballet barre

conditioning, yoga and Pilates in a range of signature classes. Still got areas that won’t budge? Combined with exercise, Ella Bache’s endermologie treatment will sculpt your body’s appearance so you can look good, and feel better.

Sweat Cosmetics is free of any hidden nasties so your skin can breathe. SWEATING IN STYLE

SHINE BRIGHT

WE’VE ALL FALLEN victim to that hot-and-sweaty tomato face after a gruelling workout, and if not, then you probably haven’t pushed hard enough! Sweat Cosmetics is a new cosmetics line that has the solution to your workout woes. Launched in 2015, Sweat Cosmetics was developed and tested by five professional Olympic athletes who wanted a product that would survive their high-intensity exercise regimes. Sweat Cosmetics started out with just two products and now boasts a tight selection of makeup essentials. The cosmetics line is cruelty-free, hypoallergenic and formulated with SPF to give fitness chicks the confidence that their skin can breathe and sweat properly.

LIPS ON-TREND Witchery Lipstick $16.95

Get ready for the new lip colours you’ll be sporting this spring. SPRING DOESN’T JUST bring a change of weather, it also brings new beauty trends. So it’s time to restock the makeup bag with these new spring-inspired lip colours. ROSY PINK Dolce & Gabbana debuted a rosy pink lip shade in their 2016 Spring Collection and it was a clear winner. Swap your matte brown nudes for a demimatte, pink hue. The models at Dolce & Gabbanna wore this colour with floral prints and a delicately winged eye-liner for a feminine look, but this lip colour can go with pretty much any eye makeup.

Yves St Laurent Rouge Volupte Silky Sensual Radiant Lipstick $57

FUCHSIA A slightly more sophisticated version of hot pink, this bold fuchsia is predicted to be a big trend this season. Swap your dark berry for this fun, bright look to match the upbeat spring fashion. With minimal makeup required, it’s so easy and is sure to be your go-to colour for any occasion. Just remember to keep this shade matte.

CORAL RED This take on the classic coral is back. The redish hue was shown off at Jason Wu’s Spring/Summer Ready to Wear earlier this year and was a popular favourite. The red coral is a staple on our beauty rotation, so we’re pleased to see it trending. Try a nude eye with a soft crease for this luscious lip colour, keep it simple but don’t forget a bit of definition. Best thing is, this shade looks great in either a matte or gloss finish.

Mt Hutt Methven

Mt Hutt is one of New Zealand’s largest ski destinations, with some of the best snow around, writes Christie Sutherland. SPENDING A WEEK in a winter wonderland that embraces nature and the great outdoors as much as New Zealand was inspiring. The direct flight into this beautiful corner of the world held picture-perfect views of rolling landscapes, snowcapped mountains and clear blue skies. The ease and accessibility of this flight, as well as the SnowScene team, made even my short getaway very worthwhile and one I would do again. After landing, it was a scenic 90-minute drive to my destination of Methven. Located at the base of the Southern Alps, Methven is a welcoming village for weary travellers. Tranquil yet exhilarating, relaxing yet vibrant, the quaint alpine-themed village offers a perfect escape from city life. Mt Hutt is the closest mountain to the village, just a short 35-minute bus drive from Methven. To help you get there, Methven Travel operate a daily ski bus – a great service to utilise for a truly stressfree vacation. Mt Hutt consistently has one of the longest snow seasons in the South Island and, as a ski resort for all skill levels, holds desirability as an adventure 82

and relaxation destination. Mt Hutt is open until early to mid-October, pending snow conditions, meaning there’s still time to get those bags packed and enjoy a snow filled weekend away. When it comes to friendliness, Methven residents have some serious street cred. The locals were so willing to help, chat and share their tips and secrets. Even if you’re not a skier or snowboarder, there are many reasons to visit Methven: the pubs, the resort, the cafes, the Alpine and Agricultural Centre, the easy-paced life and of course, the spectacular backdrop of the Southern Alps. Methven is blessed with a range of accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets. Brinkley Resort was my home during my stay and the serviced apartment was gorgeous, boasting mountain views, a serenity like no other, hot tubs, happy hour and a comfort factor that you don’t tend to get when you leave home. The Village is so central and there is no need for a car as most things are accessible by foot; the fresh stroll adding to the appeal of the destination. A few of the mustdo’s include the Brown and Blue pubs (hint: one

Mt Hutt consistently has one of the longest snow seasons in the South Island and holds desirability as an adventure and relaxation destination. is more local than the other), The Dubliner for a carb-fuelled stew by the fire, and Primo, where you can pick up a delicious hot coffee for those cold morning drives up the mountain. All-inclusive packages, kids 10 and under stay, ski and eat for free all season for Methven/Mt Hutt packages. September only packages from $715 per adult for seven nights and seven days skiing.
