THE T H G I F D O O G Mental illness is not a dirty word. It’s time to ditch the stigma, writes Tamille Head.
WHEN BRISBANE WOMAN Donna Thistlethwaite told her partner, Greg, that she was going out to buy groceries on a Sunday morning in August 2012, he could never have predicted what event was about to transpire. The mother of one left her home in Everton Park and drove to Brisbane’s iconic Story Bridge where she would eventually jump, plummeting some 40 meters, in an effort to end her life. Donna had been struggling with feelings of insecurity and self-doubt since returning to her much-loved career in Human Resources from maternity leave, and became convinced that she would be fired from the career she had spent 17 years building. “I felt that everything was out of control and that I was at risk of losing my job. I usually had everything under control and was seen as very capable,” Donna says. Over a period of 7 – 10 days her world started to unravel and she truly believed that ending her life was the only solution. That her partner and twoyear-old son, Matthew, would be better off without her. That morning she drove to the bridge, pacing backwards and forwards several times, before taking off her shoes, climbing over the fence, and then falling. She remembers the initial panic and fear as she fell and a sense of calm overtaking her, before hitting the wintery waters below. She remembers the sharp, icy sting that came with hitting the water, and the pain in her body. She remembers resurfacing and looking back up at

the bridge. And then, Donna remembers nothing before waking up in the ER. Pulled from the water by a passing ferry whose crew members were shocked to find Donna, head submerged in the water but still conscious; miraculously Donna survived. A feat that, until that time, had been unheard of. 15 people attempted suicide by jumping from the Story Bridge in 2012 alone. Donna is the only survivor. Donna recently decided to share her story with ABC’s Australian Story in a bid to help reduce the stigma surrounding suicide and mental health. By sharing her story, Donna hopes that those struggling with thoughts of suicide will be able to see that it is not the only solution; that life can be great again. “I had been getting a strong feeling that I was meant to share the story with a wider audience. I knew that getting the story out could potentially help lots of people. I think having conversations about mental health and suicide is part of what’s needed to reduce the stigma. The more we talk about it, the more people realise that they’re not the only one who feels this way at different times in life.” The fight to dispel the stigma surrounding mental health is something that Burleigh-based foundation, LIVIN, is infinitely passionate about. LIVIN was founded by two mates, Sam Webb and Casey Lyons, after they lost their friend Dwayne Lally to suicide in 2013. At the core of LIVIN’s mission is the mantra ‘It Ain’t Weak to Speak’. Their mission is to encourage and inspire people
to speak up and seek help. Through education and awareness, LIVIN is influencing change with a fresh new approach to mental health. “It was the stigma that kept Dwayne quiet and suffering in silence. He always had a smile on his face; nobody had any idea he was suffering. We want people to know that ‘it ain’t weak to speak’ and encourage them to speak up when they’re struggling,” the foundation’s co-founder Casey Lyons says. “Mental illness is just like any other disease, such as cancer or diabetes, however there is immense stigma and very little conversation surrounding mental illness in comparison. For too long, it has been perceived as a weakness. We will change this.” A large social media presence, apparel range, programs and celebrity endorsement has put LIVIN in the public sphere, connecting those who need it to information and resources. “We can save the lives of individuals if we change the way society understands, perceives and interprets mental illness,” Co-Founder Sam Webb says. “Speaking up is a sign of strength. Find someone that you trust and let them know you are struggling. Go to your GP and speak to them about the options and support available. Remember though, remain patient as it can take some time to find the right plan and people to help you get back on track. Once you find the plan and it works for you, your life will become more enjoyable again.”
WE CAN SAVE THE LIVES OF INDIVIDUALS IF WE CHANGE THE WAY SOCIETY UNDERSTANDS & INTERPRETS MENTAL ILLNESS.

THE BIG SAVE Whether it’s the trip of a lifetime or buying a home, careful saving is essential to achieving your goals. WITH A FOCUS on the complete customer experience, it’s no surprise that Commbank are at the forefront of providing personalised financial guidance. Using a holistic approach with every client, Michael Payne, Customer Banking Specialist at Commbank’s flagship branch, explains how you can learn to become a better saver. How can Commbank assist those looking to get serious about saving? Whether clients are looking to purchase property, pay school fees or give themselves financial peace of mind, my initial conversation involves a holistic approach, both financially and personally. This allows me to understand what is most important to my client. From there, I tailor a personalised savings plan that helps them achieve their goal, but also allows the continuation of a similar lifestyle. How can you help clients with budgeting? A budget plan considers a client’s income and 16
expenses, whilst also allowing for unexpected costs that may arise from time to time. Setting up a budget plan could be as simple as a weekly transfer to a high interest savings account, right up to tweaking their existing credit facilities, offset accounts or even creating new consolidation credit facilities. Budgeting is not designed to completely change your lifestyle, it is intended to allow you the peace of mind that you are financially on track to achieve your goals. How does Commbank differ when it comes to budgeting assistance? What sets CommBank apart is our attention to the client’s current situation, but also to their future needs. The technology we have on offer at Commbank is second to none and gives each of our clients the confidence that all of their financial needs are being met with ease and that their budgeting plan is accurate.
Michael Payne
The CommBank Budget Planner is an extremely effective tool accessible through the CommBank website and through our client’s personal Netbank login. It allows our clients to input data in the following categories: income, household expenses and lifestyle expenses – encompassing all aspects of budgeting. What do you love about helping your clients? It is an extremely rewarding experience to assist my clients in achieving their goals. If I can help a customer go on that trip of a lifetime, move into their dream home or reduce their stress through consolidation, I am safe in the knowledge that I have lived our vision of excelling at securing and enhancing the financial wellbeing of people, businesses and communities. FLAIR FOR THE CREATIVE Meet the Brisbane stylist and photographer behind some of Australia’s most recognisable creative projects, including Halcyon House, writes Emmy-Lou McKean.
Kara Hynes
24
FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS, Kara Hynes, better known as her former Instagram handle Lulu Lucky, always had a pencil and paper in hand. Ever since she could remember, Kara has been styling. From sketching clothing with the dream of becoming a fashion designer to going over concepts and colour schemes with her mum to decorate her room when she was younger, Kara says her concepts were always wild, even back then. Kara’s creative career path began after she finished school and studied horticulture to become a florist before she moved into event styling. “Brisbane wasn’t quite so progressive back then and I remember my ideas being slightly frowned upon for being too left of field for most people,” Kara says. “I have never studied styling as I truly believe it’s something you either have a natural eye for or not.” Over time, Kara has gained a reputation in the industry for creating an aesthetic that is uniquely her own, which she says has evolved, changed and matured over time. Using Instagram as a tool to float ideas and creative concepts, Kara quickly gained a following that now exceeds 23k. “I’ve met so many other talented creatives which has lead to so many doors opening for me,” she says. After striking up a friendship with interior designer, Anna Spiro, who she describes as a huge support in the early days, she was introduced to the clever people behind Halcyon House in Cabarita Beach.
“I worked with them for close to two years across both Halcyon House and many of their other creative endeavors, which was an invaluable experience for me and a huge growth opportunity - one that I will always be grateful for.” From working with people, places and spaces as a stylist and photographer to producing brand ideas and illustrative work as a creative director, Kara is constantly learning and honing her craft. “Once I have my mind made up that I am going to learn or do something, I can’t help but thrust myself into it wholeheartedly and teach myself,” Kara comments. “I like to work quickly and get the ball rolling and keep that momentum going throughout a project no matter how big or small it is.” Combining her love for styling and photography with her background in horticulture, Kara recently launched an online print store, an idea she’s had for quite some time. “I have a huge love of flowers, so it was only fitting that my first collection be based around that,” she says. “Some of my fondest childhood memories are surrounded by flowers and I have so many feelings attached to the scents and certain flowers that I have included in the collection.” With her new collection on its way and some exciting collaborations in the works, it’s clear Kara isn’t slowing down anytime soon. E S I M O R P M O N E V ER C The Maserati Levante was engineered to master any situation effortlessly and the drive certainly proved that, writes Christie Sutherland. HAVING NEVER HAD an opportunity to drive a luxury vehicle such as a Maserati I was in my absolute element. The assertive style was quick to captivate me. Maserati have taken vehicle design to the height of luxury, all while keeping a sense of adventure and comfort. The moment you take the wheel, the ergonomic leather seats are a hug redefined. The exclusive handcrafted Ermenegildo Zegna silk stitching truly reflected my style from the get-go. Speaking of personalisation, reflecting your unique style is what Maserati does best from the fine leather and woods to high-class technology, the features are uncompromising. The lines of the Levante are the best showcase of the overall timeless automotive design language that has certainly set a benchmark in its category. Maserati, the brand, was founded in 1914 and since then the rich history has evolved into passionate and modern pedigree with a distinctive edge. This car is a contemporary symbol of the companies’ engineering prowess and mastery 26
of craftsmanship. It truly makes you realise that getting from point A to point B has officially taken on a whole new meaning. With a car as luxurious as the Maserati Levante one would opt to not adventure, but even on the most intimidating terrain the Levante will dominate. Assisting with this is the Q4 intelligent all-wheel drive system and the advanced active air suspension. By slightly flexing my foot my heart started to race, the power is unmatched with anything I have ever experienced and the aerodynamic ability of the car is certainly felt as it glides into sport mode. The purr of the engine was a throaty one that got my senses unraveling. The 8.4 inch touch control screen made me feel like I had absolute control on every feature in the car, picking a soundtrack to each journey added some fun. With all that fun comes safety, ‘active’ safety technology designed to help prevent collisions, including Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Alert, Rear Cross Path detection and many more warning systems that enhance, not interrupt the driving experience. The handling is precise, and the car is in its element everywhere, from the city to coastal adventures it truly inspires your driving experience. There is no shortage of space or performance with the Maserati Levante, it left me breathless. MASERATI BRISBANE 570 WICKHAM ST, FORTITUDE VALLEY P 3252 8222 MASERATIBRISBANE.COM.AU

Marianne Edmonds and Helena Medhurst
promotion
OWNING THE “WOW” FACTOR Built on a foundation of friendship, these two friends are marching to the beat of their own drum. THE UNIQUE FRIENDSHIP between Marianne Edmonds and Helana Medhurst has enabled them to develop a strong foundation on which to build their business – Loud Events, a premier event planning company. More than friends and business partners, Marianne describe them as family; “Our dedicated team is our second family. Helena and I are best friends and have similar values and business ideals. We are each others ying and yang, and that is the luckiest thing you could ever hope for.” The decision to pioneer their own event planning business came from a desire to be centrally
located in one city; “Everyone said there was not enough event business in Brisbane, however events are essential to every marketing plan – to educate, inform, incentivise, network, launch, showcase – businesses that integrate events do amazingly well.” As full-time working mothers, this journey has come with challenges. “Some days we feel we are either a rubbish mum or a rubbish boss. If you miss something at school you are present at work, and vise versa.” However, by surrounding themselves with a positive and supportive team, made up of their employees and their own families,
they have created a business and culture that is distinctly different from any other in the industry. “Our point of difference is enthusiasm. We make it our mission to understand the objective of the event and design to that objective. Every decision and design should link back to the key objective. And then ensure we laugh along the way.” LOUD EVENTS 6/146 RACECOURSE RD, ASCOT P 3200 8299 LOUD.EVENTS

HELP DAD THIS FATHER’S DAY
FIT FOR LIFE
GREAT MEN CONSULTANCY Founder Grace Stewart wants to raise awareness of depression and encourage men to get help. The burden of being a dad as well as traditional pressures may affect men’s mental health. As such, Father’s Day may not be a day of connection for some fathers who may need to open up a dialogue with a trained professional. “We work with men everyday who had reached a level of despair. Counselling has had a positive impact and given them hope and great recovery outcomes,” Ms Stewart stated.
GETTING RID OF that winter bulge and shaping up in time for summer doesn’t have to be hard. Some of Brisbane’s best personal trainers share their tips on how to get on track with your fitness regime this season. Maybe running 5kms isn’t your thing; give boxing or a HIIT class a go. Exercise is something people have to commit to themselves, don’t make excuses, make it a part of your new lifestlye. Be clear with what results and goals you want to achieve, then plan and program your training to help you progress towards what you want to achieve.

DESIGN IS IN THE DETAIL From large scale events to intimate spaces, Brendan Cummings invests himself into all areas of design. WHETHER HE IS designing a function space or ensuring an event runs to schedule, Brendan Cummings is hands-on with all aspects of his work with The Styled Group. Coming from a background of graphic design and architecture, Brendan possesses a keen eye for detail and a strategicyet-creative way of approaching tasks. Brendan oversees the execution of events and services to ensure everything, right down to the smallest detail, has been thoughtfully selected to suit the needs and tastes of the client. Having begun his career planning weddings and lighting displays for his friends, Brendan quickly discovered his ability to design inspired events while still managing the intricate details of event planning. Venturing into visual merchandising refined his taste and styling, and now he operates as the Director and Creative Designer of his own company, The Styled Group. While his client base has expanded to include customers such as national retail centres, Brendan is still passionate about styling events and spaces on a more personal scale. Whether it’s a 200-person wedding, an intimate corporate function, or a family home, his unique skillset 36
equips him to creatively execute design solutions for all needs. “A stylist does so much more than just select the colour scheme. We help identify your individual style and reflect it in the space being styled. A good stylist will have a great team of professionals in the industry that are able to source good quality and bespoke pieces to really set your space apart. Most importantly, a good stylist can take the stress out of designing, be it interior styling or an event space, to accentuate the function and aesthetic of the space.” As Creative Designer, Brendan keeps abreast of styling trends to ensure he always brings surprising
and innovative ideas to the table; “While this season will see a continued emphasis on greenery balanced with raw and luxe detailing, it will be elevated with high-end industrial touches and rich finishes such as velvets and metallics.” When incorporating the new season into your own styling, Brendan recommends, “Think about textures and finishes and focus on incorporating at least three different types of materials. This could mean combining beautifully textured table linen with gorgeous natural glazed dinner plates and simple elegant glassware for a stylish dinner soirée, or mingling a simple white cotton quilt cover with abundant textural throw cushions and a luxe faux fur floor rug. Combining textures can bring a sense of opulence and luxury to any space.” THE STYLED GROUP P 3852 3339 THESTYLEDGROUP.COM

TWO’S COMPANY
CHIC AND SOPHISTICATED!
Get to know Brisbane’s favourite power couple Michelle and Serkan Allen as they discuss their latest collaboration with The Myer Centre. What does it mean to collaborate with The Myer Centre? Michelle: I’m excited to be working with The Myer Centre as it has been my go-to shopping destination in the CBD for as long as I can remember. I’m all about creating looks that consist of high-end labels mixed with more affordable ones, so I love the variety that The Myer Centre has to offer. This spring, where in the city will we find you? Serkan: There’s nothing better than taking some time out and cooling down with a cold drink. When it’s time to treat yourself, where do you go for new season finds? Michelle: When I want
to treat myself to something new, I can’t go past my favourite Australian labels from Myer. Where in the city do you go to recharge? Serkan: I’m a fan of fresh juices and acai bowls and I love being able to grab these when I’m on-the-go in the city. What spring trends are you most looking forward to rocking once the weather warms up? Michelle: Count me in for some statement earrings this spring! Serkan: I think I’m going to step out of my comfort zone this season and try something like the floral shirt I wore in this shoot.
Michelle and Serkan Allen
Why do you think The Myer Centre is one of Brisbane’s most iconic shopping destinations? Michelle: Some of the earliest memories from my childhood are from when my dad used to take my brother and I to Tops - the mini theme park that was on the top level of The Myer Centre in the 90’s. I had so much fun visiting the centre back then and I still do, although now it’s not the Dragon-coaster that attracts me but the retail therapy!

Sharona Harris
HOW I GOT HERE: SHARONA HARRIS It’s the label loved by it-girls and celebrities alike. Courtney Frank gets to know the woman behind F+H Jewellery. SHE’S THE ENERGETIC and extremely passionate jewellery designer who loves the beach and drinks far too much coffee. Margot Robbie and Lara Worthington are fans, and so are we. How did you get to where you are today? After university I worked in several marketing and public relations roles, all with successful entrepreneurs, which I found much more valuable than any university education. Working in small businesses instead of large corporations meant that I had to take on responsibilities outside of my role and learn how to problem solve quickly. In 2014 I had coffee with a good friend and we decided to go into business together to start a jewellery brand. Unfortunately, that relationship didn’t work out, but I decided to keep the brand going. I am now the owner and designer of F+H Jewellery. You have a long history of working in PR. Did this help or hinder you when it came to launching your own business? It’s been my strength. It’s helped me to stand out from other brands in the market, as I know that the product is only one piece of the puzzle. Over the years I’ve formed relationships and friendships with so many people in the industry that have 48
helped me along the way. If F+H Jewellery was a woman, describe what she’d be like: She orders her coffee strong, dancing on the weekends is her favourite workout and she loves to play her music loud. She is as comfortable in a t-shirt, jeans and sneakers as she is in a little black dress and heels. She is confident and oh-so cool. You do everything from designing the jewellery to managing the online store. Is it safe to say you have a hands on approach? Haha yes! I do EVERYTHING, but that’s ok! I think when you’re starting out you need to get a grip on all areas of your business, and of course you need to save money so that you can reinvest it into new collections. But if you’re determined enough, it’s amazing how quickly you can learn. If the sky was the limit, how would you like to see the brand expand? I really want to see F+H in some major international stockists, and I would also like to expand the brand to other accessories outside of jewellery. But for now, I’m focusing on my own online presence and making sure that I’m always at the top of my game. READ MORE ONLINE

colour. This newer, younger style effortlessly dances along the line of traditional preppy, while still bringing new life to the table. The style keeps in-line with the trialled and tested tradition of refreshing each spring with a heavy dose of colour. Industrial styling is pervading fashion at the moment and inspiring how we dress every morning. The look incorporates an element of hardness and is inspired by utility gear and military accoutrement. While it might sound intimidating, thoughtful styling makes the look easily wearable. Tiffany & Co. best highlights this through their Hardwear Collection, a celebration of rebellion, energy and power. A far cry from the classic styles often associated with the brand, this new collection displays a modern Tiffany & Co., one that is a little edgier and younger. The chunky links and utilitarian shapes pair perfectly with jeans and a t-shirt in an effortlessly cool way that is synonymous with New York, and in our opinion, Brisbane style. Whether it’s the bold, cherry apple red of Salvatore Ferragamo’s flower heel sandals or the deep, jewelled tones of Bulgari’s Serpenti collection, spring is taking hold of our styling. Emanating warmth and vibrancy, the joyful richness of spring fashion is ripe for the picking, and Brisbane’s centre for luxury labels, QueensPlaza, is the ultimate destination. EDWARD STREET
TWENTY FOUR HOURS WITH KAAN TAVLI We chat with Kaan Tavli, Urbbana Brand Manager and Senior Stylist, about making an impact with style. 5:30AM My mornings are the most consistent part of my life. I start every day checking my emails and the Urbbana social media accounts before my needy cat forces me out of bed. As an adolescent I played futsal semiprofessionally, and since then daily training has been embedded in my day-to-day life. Every morning starts with either a run or training at the gym. 8:00AM My daily style is dictated by my mood, but I always live by advice my father once gave me; “There are three things you never compromise on: the quality of your shoes, the quality of your tie, and the quality of the person you one day marry!” 8:45AM Edward Coffee House on Mary St is my second home. The girls there remember my order and have it ready and waiting for me, along with my breakfast. As soon as I arrive at the boutique I speak with our talented designer, Sam Abi, about the agenda for the day. My role is very hands-on and can include everything from styling sessions through to dispatching orders. 12:00PM My role has a strong emphasis on business development, marketing, and operations management. Whether I am liaising with our craftsmen in Portugal, Turkey and Italy or working with corporate clients on their personal image, my focus is always to create impact with style. 3:00PM At our flagship boutique on Edward St we have a high-end full-service barbershop and lounge, which I fully utilise when it comes to meetings. I love talking style and business over a razor-shave and coffee! I’m also passionate about traditional French boulangerie, which is why during lunch I’m usually at Le Bon Choix cafe. 7:00PM With our industry being a very social one, I usually find myself at events throughout the week. I tend to eat out a lot, but thankfully have the cooking done for me when I am at home! 9:30PM There are three things I do when I have the time to unwind: eat good food, drink great wine, and smoke an even better cigar! I’m a huge fan of jazz and lounge music, so I love to spend my evenings at Doo-Bop Jazz Bar enjoying the live music til’ the late hours of the evening. A LIST OF 7 THINGS I’VE WORN And how they have shaped me. By Siobhan Taylor.
1.
For a few years I was hooked on ear piercings. The more embellishments on my ears, the better. I’ve since dialed down the number of piercings, and instead opt for bigger and bolder tchotchkes. Maximalism is key.
3.
2.
4.
Since my adolescence, sneakers have always managed to make me feel invincible. Not one for strappy sandals or towering heels, my sneakers always manage to keep up with me even when I am moving a million miles an hour. I’ve chased that feeling of invincibility ever since.
Taking style cues from the likes of James Dean and Steve McQueen, my personal style has always been synonymous with denim (even before I knew what “style” was). My first stint at a music festival included doc martins, denim cut-offs, a seethrough blouse, and sitting on a strangers shoulders.
7.
5. For me, graphic t-shirts mean I can speak my mind without opening my mouth. Feminist slogans have been my go-to since late-high school, and when paired with a mini-skirt and my Nikes, I get a glimmer of that invincibility once again.
While I typically opt for contact lenses these days, style icons such as Jenna Lyons, Elton John and Zoe Saldana often have me reaching for my specs in the morning.
6.
My brushed gold watch is the first item I ever wore that made me feel like a grown-up. A gift from an ex-boyfriend, this simple accessory is a daily reminder of how quickly life changes.
I cannot over exaggerate how many striped t-shirts I own. Flattering and practical, striped shirts have been my modus operandi since I first started making decisions about the way I dress. Nothing is more comforting than pulling on a striped cotton-tee over a pair of jeans and sneakers.

UNIQUE AND EVOLVING One of Brisbane’s great musical exports, Megan Washington chats to Emmy-Lou McKean about her upcoming orchestral collaboration and forthcoming album. AFTER BURSTING ONTO the Australian music scene back in 2008, two-time ARIA Award winning talent, Megan Washington, is back with a new sound that is still uniquely her own. As part of this years’ Brisbane Festival, Megan Washington and Queensland Symphony Orchestra, lead by John Foreman, will come together for one night only, performing brand new songs from Megan’s forthcoming album and a selection of favourites from her previous three. We chat with Megan about the evolving sound of her new record and what audiences can expect from the upcoming show. How would you describe your upcoming album compared to your previous album, There There? It’s slower, sadder. Romantically melancholy. On this record I wrote about sad love. I was thinking a bit of Roy Orbison. Having said that, it’s very digital and glitchy. What has inspired the new direction of your sound? This time I wanted to make an album that would translate differently live. I often find my shows are such a big thing because the way that I naturally write is quite dense; so with this record I tried to write more sparsely, effectively to give myself more space on stage. Can audiences expect to get a taste of the new album at your performance? They won’t just get a taste; they’ll get a whole meal! For this Brisbane Festival show I will be performing my new 62

album in full with Queensland Symphony Orchestra lead by John Foreman. I’ve been a fan of John’s ever since I first saw him as musical director on Australian Idol. Obviously since then I’ve come to fully understand the length and breadth of his musicianship. This is our first time working together. How would you describe the experience of performing with a live orchestra? Well, I mean, it’s some kind of dream to have your music realized in such an extravagant way! I tend to make things up as I go in my live shows, changing the set
list spontaneously, doing solo songs when I feel the urge. Obviously it’s a much tighter ship when working with such a large ensemble. Is there anything you’re looking forward to checking out at Brisbane Festival? I love comedy, so I’m really looking forward to Zoe Coombs-Marr, and I recently discovered Demi Lardner while I was watching stand up clips on YouTube. Musically I’m really jazzed about seeing Ngaiire; her live shows are always so creative and inspiring. MEGANWASHINGTON.COM.AU

WEDDING CENTRAL
ARE YOU A COFFEE SNOB?
AN ENCHANTING ENGAGEMENT
WHATEVER YOUR PERSONAL style may be, engaging professional help when designing your wedding will give you the expertise and experience you need to perfectly achieve your vision (and ensure it meets with your budget!). From choosing the colour palette or theme to designing centrepieces and sourcing furniture, a stylist can help navigate the often-tricky waters of planning a wedding. You can choose to outsource every detail or simply engage services in the areas that you need. Stylists can take care of your ceremony, reception and recovery breakfast the day after to ensure your chosen scheme continues throughout. Even DIY-loving couples can enlist support in creating and sourcing all the elements they need to produce their own dream wedding. A professional stylist can help ensure everything you dreamed is ready and waiting for you when you begin your walk down the aisle. An extra set of hands can take the stress out of planning your special day, and allow you to focus on the main event – saying ‘I do’.
THIS IS A question I am often asked. Yes, I like specialty coffee - coffee that is made from quality beans sourced ethically, freshly roasted, and prepared by a professional barista. Does that make me a coffee snob? I think not. In the industry, coffee is considered “specialty” if it has been assessed using the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) cupping protocols and has scored 80 points or above. The SCA takes into consideration the entire supply chain – farmer, buyer, roaster, barista and customer. When discussed in relation to a café or roasting house, it can be a little more ambiguous. Today, with everyone claiming their coffee is of the highest quality, how do you really know? Transparency is a good starting point. Do you know what you are actually drinking in your morning brew? What type of bean, from where, processed how, roasted when? Taking the time to learn about the coffee you are purchasing is the first step to ensuring you are investing in an industry that puts quality ahead of all else. And I don’t think that makes me a coffee snob.
WHEN IT COMES to buying an engagement ring you don’t have to be limited to a traditional solitaire. Rather than buying a ring off the shelf, we believe your engagement ring should be as unique and individual as your own personal style. Oval, cushion and emerald cut diamonds are wonderful alternatives to the classic round brilliant. If you love the Art Deco style, there are beautiful and unique diamond options such as asschers and caddi cuts (to name a few) that will light up your design and give it personality. Explore coloured gemstones. Sapphires are our favourite as they come in a variety of shades and have a high refractive index (sparkle factor!). They are also durable and suitable for everyday wear - perfect for an engagement ring. Speak to the Artisans Gems and Jewels team about gemstone hardness and durability, as this is an important factor to consider. We want your engagement ring to be your perfect piece, and to last you a lifetime. “Don’t be afraid of being different; be afraid of being the same as everybody else.”

UNSPOKEN EXPECTATIONS
CONFERENCES THAT ENGAGE
HOW TO GET THE LOOK AT HOME
ONE THEME THAT constantly comes up in couples coaching are unspoken expectations. These have the potential of weakening even the strongest of relationships. Unspoken expectations are the result of assumptions and offhand remarks. He might say, “Yeah, I’d like kids one day” but she hears “Ok, 3 kids in 5 years”. Finance is another potential minefield, where she might say “We live and love together, so therefore we pool our money” and he might think “No way! You have your money, I have my money.” It is ideal to talk about what each of you expects from the relationship including responsibilities, commitments, time together, and the future. Talking means you discover if the expectations you both have are realistic, clear, and are meeting the needs of the relationship. Misunderstood expectations wreak havoc on any partnership. Engaging a professional can help uncover and negotiate those expectations to restore openness and understanding and get the relationship back on track.
IN OUR TIME poor world, it is imperative you inject energy into your conference experience to ensure better outcomes on all levels. Don’t underestimate the effect music has on the mood. Consider a live DJ or string quartet to start each session. It is also a good practice to ensure speakers are prepared prior to the event to ensure each of them is on point with the message. Similarly, invest in a great MC who will research your objectives and ensure your speakers are kept on time and message. Push the venue for creative snacks throughout the function, such as trail mix or green smoothie stations, to keep energy levels high. It is crucial you devise a way for delegates to integrate with exhibitors and sponsors. It is important you be creative, as the average person is fairly reserved and may need some encouragement. And finally, give voice to your audience. People do not come to a conference to sit and listen passively. Provide them with a chance to share their expertise and options. Don’t waste this precious opportunity to engage and excite.
THERE IS NO better feeling than leaving the hairdresser with a fresh new do. The one thing I get asked often is how my clients can achieve a salon blow dry at home. There are a few things you’ll need before you start, but firstly, applying a styling product from mid-lengths to ends will ensure you achieve a smooth, long-lasting finish. It’s important to use a heat-protection product to avoid leaving your strands looking dry and damaged. Tools are also just as important as technique. I recommend using a good hairdryer with a nozzle and always styling with a round medium-barrel brush. I recommend allowing your hair to dry slightly to reduce over-exposure to heat and save styling time. Blowdry the hair as usual until it’s about 80 per cent dry, and then section off with clips and continue drying using the barrel brush. After you’ve finished styling, allow your hair to cool down as this sets the hair. Once cooled, slowly brush out and then use your finger to part your hair where you want. Finish with a flexible hairspray to set everything in place.

It is vital to socialise with your partner, family, and friends who have a similar good sense of humour, share ups and downs, and stay positive. Get moving, have healthy eating habits, moderate alcohol, have a quality eight hours sleep, and also stress-busting strategies. These things contribute to a satisfying and positive ageing and retirement.
SPRING IS HERE and it is time to put your best fashion foot forward. So get ready to start planning those spring racing outfits. The years’ trends come in to play and the Spring Carnival is the perfect time to present the bolder side of personal style. With men’s fashion in the limelight more than ever before, this should hopefully breed new confidence into taking stylish risks. Experiment with colours, prints and textures. The best way to execute this is by buying a suit that has a lustre and it is not your everyday work suit, something with a great texture is ideal to create interest. Look to wear a hat as it can add a bit of flair to any outfit. Be bold in the colours of spring, such as Primrose Yellow (Grey based yellow), Kale, Lapis Blue and Fuchsia. It’s also great to turn to greys instead of blue as the predominant colour of your suit. Then finish off your outfit with a stylish shoe in any colour but black.
THE OVERALL PROPERTY market in Brisbane’s inner city continues to perform extremely well, in particular the housing and owner occupier apartment markets. But sometimes the market can prove to be tricky to navigate as the investor apartment market, which as widely reported, is currently experiencing an oversupply. There are still buyers who are actively looking to purchase these apartments, however they are extremely cautious about overpaying. When looking at what the market is doing in the residential inner suburbs of Brisbane, it is clear that there’s a shortage of residential properties for sale compared to previous years. This is pushing up the prices of homes in highly sought after school catchment zones and properties that are close to the CBD as there is still the same volume of buyers wanting to purchase a home in those suburbs. When choosing an agent, it’s important to look for someone with experience and exceptional local knowledge to achieve the best result for you.

SOIRÉE SEASON
IN WITH THE NEW
The Joinery
There’s been a shift in event styling trends, as Tamille Head discovers. IF YOU’RE PLANNING an event but can’t stand the thought of it being another boho bonanza, we have some good news. There’s a new wave of styling trends just waiting to transform your next ‘do.
MONOCHROME Black and white, but not as you know it. In a move to get back to basics, we’re seeing a return to a monochromatic colour palette. Paired back with hints of timber and natural accents, it’s a more simplistic, contemporary approach to styling that is anything but boring.
66
TROPICAL LUXE In a welcome change from the boho trend that has overtaken the event scene, expect to see a surge of tropical styling in months to come. Natural bases of bamboo, white or timber adorned with tropical inspired décor. Think drinks served from coconuts instead of Mason jars, bright throw cushions, green plants and tables lined with pineapples. The kind of look that makes you want to pack your bags and jet off to a tropical paradise.
KAS Caico cushion $49.95 Adairs Home Republic poppy basket $89.95
GOLD Rose gold has had its moment, and it’s officially time to let gold reign supreme again. While we’ve already seen gold accents start to edge their way into events in the form of cutlery, dinner plates and vases, expect to see a more elaborate use of the metallic hue in bold statement furniture pieces such as dining chairs and coffee tables. Ahinah Homewares Walter drinks trolley $399.95
WIRE FURNITURE It seems as though the world’s collective obsession with Brentwood chairs may be coming to an end. Wire furniture and décor is tipped to become a huge trend in event styling, as hosts choose to embrace a more modern, sleek look over the rustic style favoured in the past. Industrial meets glamorous with the introduction of tall, wire bar stools and coffee tables in simple, understated tones.

EVENT STYLE DECODED
FORMAL Somewhere between cocktail and black tie, a formal dress code requires a short or long formal dress or separates for the ladies. For the men; a dark suit, white shirt and conservative tie is appropriate. Tuxedo’s are optional as formal is often another way to describe Black Tie.
Got the save the date? Now comes the fun part, writes Tamille Head. THE SOIREE SEASON is upon us and that means one thing: events. As the event invitations roll in, it’s time to start getting serious about what you’ll wear, because let’s face it, no two events will have the same dress code. The dress codes for events can usually be met with fear, as sometimes it can be tricky territory finding the perfect balance between smart and casual or deciding if you should wear heels to a garden wedding. It’s a conflicting minefield that can leave even the most seasoned shopper at a loss. Whatever your style, there’s a way to adhere to the dress code. To make the upcoming season a cinch, we’ve decoded the most common dress codes so you can start shopping up a storm without the stress.

BLACK TIE Think red carpet! This is your chance to really bring the glam. Ladies, don a full-length evening gown and your best jewellery. Black Tie is usually reserved for evening weddings and balls, so it’s a good excuse to dress up. Men are expected to wear a tuxedo, bow tie and dress shoes.
COCKTAIL A cocktail dress code is most applicable if you’re attending a semi-formal wedding or event. Cocktail attire isn’t overtly formal and still allows you to have a little fun. A step above smart casual, cocktail wear is usually shorter in length. Men are generally required to wear a suit, preferably a dark one in navy or charcoal, accompanied by a white or plain coloured shirt. And of course, don’t forget a tie.
SMART CASUAL Perhaps the most confusing of all dress codes. Smart casual can leave many scratching their heads as it can sometimes leave the dress code open to interpretation. Many fear arriving to the event overdressed, or (god forbid) underdressed. Best defined as neat, conventional, yet relatively informal, Smart Casual sits somewhere between dressy and casual.

Sirlion with Croustillant of oxtail, confit shallot and jus gras
Mojito with a twist of stinging needle juice
CUTTING EDGE CUISINE
Butter poached red claw yabby with smoked bacon and artichoke veloute
Blending sustainable produce with culinary excellence has put Hummingbird Bar & Restaurant in a league of its own, writes Emmy-Lou McKean. THE NEWEST ADDITION to Rosalie’s Baroona Road dining precinct is Hummingbird Bar & Restaurant. The freshly renovated restaurant boasts a welcoming open-plan dining space that rolls out into an alfresco area. Design elements such as pendant drop lighting maintain the warm, cosy feel even throughout the outdoor area. As my guest and I arrive we are quick to be greeted by two of the restaurant’s three owners. We are shown to our table which is close to the bar but still within view of the buzzing street. It’s been a long day in the office, so first things first are a round of cocktails. Together we decide to let the bartender choose something sweet but with just enough kick to help us unwind. My guest receives a Mojito with a twist of stinging needle juice. After one sip, it’s clear that this cocktail is the equivalent of Queensland in a glass: refreshing, tropical, and with just enough 68
tang to keep you sipping. I have the pomegranate and lemon martini. It was fruity and strong, just as you’d imagine it to be, but with hints of raspberry flavour it quickly tricked my tastebuds into thinking it was infused with a redskin lolly. The menu steers away from the traditional format of entree, main and dessert, and instead, takes shape in the form of begin, continue and accompany, and it’s clear that the tapas-style dishes are designed to encourage diners to mix and share. Our first dish arrives and it is unlike anything I’ve ever seen or tasted before. Mixing green broad beans with vodka-cured salmon on a bed of foraged greens and almond crumb sees this dish take on more of a salad form. It’s crunchy, fresh and zesty. The perfect dish to follow up our cocktails and kick off our next meal. The butter-poached Red Claw Yabby with smoked bacon and artichoke veloute arrives next. The succulent yabby meat is perfectly paired with
the smoked bacon. The only downfall was having to share this dish with my guest as I could have easily enjoyed it all by myself. Not long after, our main of pasture-raised sirloin with Croustillant of oxtail, confit shallot and jus gras arrives. It combines all the elements you would expect to find on a steak dish, but with a contemporary twist. The shredded oxtail meat has been wrapped in a crisp casing, giving it extra crunch. Next to it sits a golden dumpling-like croquette of mash that goes perfectly with the plump sirloin steak, which is cooked to perfection; not compromising the integrity of the meat. The attention to detail in every dish on the menu at Hummingbird Bar & Restaurant proves the commitment the team has toward their ethos of telling a story through the food they serve. The Lab Bar & Restaurant
Dripping with elegance and decadence, The Lab Bar & Restaurant is a unique and exciting dining experience, writes Tamille Head. NESTLED AWAY IN the stunning surrounds of Treasury’s Heritage Hotel & Casino, the multi award-winning The Lab Restaurant and Bar offers a contemporary sense of hospitality with a touch of timeless elegance. Don’t be deceived by the name, this is nothing like a school science lab. Offset by a huge oak bar, inviting diners into a bright and open space that’s classy, elegant and unpretentious. In a building that’s more than 100 years old, The Lab offers an equally decadent Modern Australian menu showcasing a selection of great produce with a variety of East/West fusion cooking styles. It all goes down swimmingly with an impressive wine and beverage list from the vast cellar. Our dining experience starts with a plate of natural oysters; fresh and salty, they paired perfectly with our choice of Chardonnay and made a lovely pre-dinner treat. Next came entrees, which were an amazing surprise. The pumpkin risotto was an absolute highlight, a melt-in-your74
mouth, creamy texture with a crunch from the pine nuts; a dish that you would normally pair with a wintery palette was a fresh, summery choice. The zucchini blossoms were crunchy, flavourful and the horseradish cream took your taste buds on an incredible journey. Plated perfectly, this dish was crisp and conversational. The main courses followed, and we decided to choose a variety in order to fully explore all that The Lab had to offer. The scallops were juicy and large and the prawns were exquisitely fresh. The fresh greens and XO sauce were a great addition to the dish. We paired this with an Asian side of seafood combination rice which was very tasty. Then there was the steak, an incredibly juicy fillet of rib eye cooked medium rare with just the right amount of lean meat and succulent fat. Served with an assortment of thin handmade and shaved potatoes and sweet potato crisps which were hard to stop eating, and a delightful béarnaise sauce. For dessert, we dined on the most decadent
Atlantic Salmon, rainforest lime and caper ferro, spinach, potato glass, leek aioli
white chocolate cheesecake, offset by a delightfully-refreshing raspberry gel, crunchy meringue and a smooth, creamy dollop of maple pecan ice cream. Looking out the beautiful bay windows to the bustling city, The Lab makes a great place to take clients, spoil your loved one or just enjoy Brisbane’s history in general. THE VIP TREATMENT You’ve already begun to fill your wardrobe with spring trends, now it’s time to think about updating your manicure too. Put away those rich wine hues and dark navy polishes, this season it’s all about peachy pinks, pops of metallics, black accents and block colours in everything from vibrant tangerine to forest green. Contrasting your bold nail colour against softer seasonal fashion will really make your manicure pop. Invest in a Shellac polish next time you’re in the salon to extend the length of your colour and reduce chipping. BEAUTY SHORTCUTS Want to fast-track your morning routine? Tamille Head discovers the beauty shortcuts that will get you there. MICROBLADING BROWS Using a series of micro needles to implant coloured pigment under the skin, microblading is one of the most sought-after techniques in the beauty industry. Also known as eyebrow feathering, this treatment achieves a more natural look than tattooing by using a handheld tool to deliver fine, even strokes. The results last from one-to-three years, and can be achieved on all eyebrow types. After care is extremely important and clients are advised to avoid getting brows wet and sweating excessively for one week after the treatment. Touch-ups are recommended at six to twelve month intervals. LASH LIFT & TINT Say goodbye to eyelash curlers and mascara. Using specially created silicone pads to lift the lashes from the root only, this technique creates a subtle, natural looking lift, giving the illusion of length and makes the eyes appear more open. The entire process takes roughly 30 minutes to complete, and is usually accompanied by a complimentary lash tint. Expect results to last six to eight weeks. EYELINER TATTOOING Although cosmetic tattooing has been around for many years, its techniques and range of procedure
Look, feel and be your best…
options have increased greatly in recent years, now expanding to include eyeliner tattooing. This technique enhances the eyes, making them more intense, and can be applied in a range of thicknesses, winged eyeliner included. Work with your technician to create the perfect style to suit your eye shape. KERASILK KERATIN SMOOTHING TREATMENT This in-salon smoothing treatment has been developed with new innovative Kerashape technology, combined with precious silk and keratin proteins, to give long-lasting, transforming results for up to five months. The treatments contain high concentrations of keratin that penetrate throughout the hair structure, and then are sealed within the cortex to repair damage. The procedure can take up to three hours to complete, but promises to tame frizzy, unruly hair by softening and smoothing the hair structure, while also enhancing body and movement.

MOVING FORWARD
The key to an active life is to find activities that fit into your current lifestyle just a few times a week.
LifeShape Clinic Exercise Physiologist Daniel Kane explains how to think of movement as an opportunity, not an inconvenience. ONE OF THE most common comments we get from new clients is “I don’t like exercise”. However, often what they mean is they don’t enjoy the particular form of exercise they think they have to do to maintain a healthy weight. “We tell our clients they don’t have to start big, simply start with something they enjoy,” explains Daniel. “Being active doesn’t mean sprinting up a hill for an hour, or slogging it out at the gym every day. Exercise can simply be physical activity that elevates your heart rate and benefits your health, fitness and overall wellbeing.” The key to an active life is to find activities that fit into your current lifestyle just a few times a week. “Let’s be honest, if you have to force yourself to do it, you’re not going to continue it long term,” says
to encourage our clients to live a life of balance,” says Dan. “Simply making a conscious effort to move more is a huge step in the right direction towards a happier, healthier lifestyle.” LIFESHAPE CLINIC LEVEL 1, 19-23 CRIBB ST, MILTON P 1800 567 348 LIFESHAPE.COM.AU

Dan. “Some fun ways to fit in some extra physical activity include swimming at the beach, stretching while watching TV, gardening, climbing on a jungle gym with your kids, or walking to a destination instead of getting in the car.” The good news? PUT YOUR BEST FACE FORWARD It’s not what lies beneath that matters. It’s what lies ahead. THE BROW AND Skin Studio offers the latest in groundbreaking technology and is the place where science meets skincare. Their results-driven services, such as Light Therapy and specialised skin peels, is now complemented with the Observ Skin Diagnostic Device. Salon owner and skin therapist Sherril Dalitz believes in a personalised approach to skin with a philosophy that the treatments and products they use must show visible results. “Observ is an innovative and revolutionary development in skin diagnostics that photographs 2mm below the skin’s surface,” says Sherril. “The Observ device is revolutionary in the way it reveals more than the top layer of skin, showing what lies
beneath and, more importantly, what lies ahead for your skin.” The device captures six skin-analysis photographs of your face in different light sources to analyse and target skin issues and concerns. It is able to view texture below the skin’s surface, exposing damage and inflammation in high definition. It even provides a comprehensive picture of how the skin will look in 10 to 15 years time. Observ enables Sherril and her team to instantly discover skin conditions below the surface,
enabling clients to make an informed decision on the next step to address these skin issues. The experience may be unnerving at first, however the insight gained is invaluable in creating a personalised skin treatment plan that is effective in achieving the desired results for your skin. MAKE THE CHOP A new season calls for a new do. Tamille Head reveals what you should ask for at your next salon appointment. IT’S THE HAIRSTYLE that continues to reinvent itself, year after year, and this season, the bob is getting much shorter and blunter. Cut just below the lobes, we’re seeing a shift from the ‘lob’ of seasons past as celebrities and bloggers get the full chop. This season, it’s all about keeping it very raw and embracing your hairs natural texture. Stylingwise, it’s all very simple: wash and leave to air dry. For those with fine, straight hair, hairstylists recommend applying a serum to damp hair before bed and allowing it to dry naturally in order to achieve a more natural look. If sleek is more your style, apply a heat protection spray to damp hair before blow drying with a paddle brush. If you can’t bare to go the full chop, freshen up your look by having some bangs cut in. Pushed to either side or worn across your forehead, they’re the perfect way to inject some French-girl cool into your Spring look. To avoid frizz and flyaways, blow out your bangs immediately after washing. Hold your hair dryer over your head, facing down towards your forehead, and brush your bangs from side to side until dry. This takes care of any cowlicks and ensures your bangs fall straight.

Just in time for spring, we are now offering incredible new nail products for our clients! The first new product is called SlickPour and is a powder coating system for even stronger nails. Is it compatible with tips for extra length? Of course! In fact, it’s a much more hygienic system than acrylic, has no odour, and has the same extended colour wear as acrylic (3 to 4 weeks). The base contains vitamin E and calcium, so it’s good for your nails and it’s high shine finish is gorgeous. The other new product is called Go Time. It’s similar to the much-loved shellac, but so much better. As I type this, I’m looking at my own nails that have been rocking this killer product for almost 3 weeks without a chip in sight. It’s different to other products in that it doesn’t need a base coat or a topcoat, and if you do get a little chip or break a nail, you don’t need to remove and start again as

GET CLUED IN ON BLOOD CLOTS
IMPORTANCE OF HEALTHY GUMS
NATURAL AND MAINTAINED
THROMBOSIS OR BLOOD clotting can lead to serious complications such as heart attacks, stroke, Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), or, more seriously, a Pulmonary Embolism (PE). So what is a blood clot? It’s a mass formed by platelets, which are held together by fibrin, a protein which acts like glue. 50 per cent of blood clots in deep veins go unnoticed until they cause complications. Diagnosis is determined by a Duplex Ultrasound Scan, and treatment requires anti-coagulation drugs, compression and mobilisation. How to reduce your risk of a blood clot: • Travel. Avoid sitting for long periods without walking periodically. • Surgery. Discuss the risks of DVT with your doctor and whether anticoagulant medication is appropriate to reduce the risk. • Lifestyle. Stop smoking, lower high blood pressure and maintain a healthy weight through diet and exercise. • Research. Know your family history and talk to your GP if you think you may be at risk.
RECENT FINDINGS PUBLISHED by the American Association for Cancer Research has revealed a strong link between periodontal (gum) disease and cancer. Almost 66,000 post menopausal women were followed for an average of 8 years. In that time 7149 cancers were subsequently diagnosed - a strike rate of almost 11 per cent. Although anyone can develop cancer, the women with pre-existing gum disease had a 14 per cent higher risk to developing any form of cancer. Certain cancers were more common in the periodontal disease group. These included oesophageal (throat), breast, lung, gall bladder and melanoma. In fact women with gum disease were 3 times more likely to develop throat cancer than those with healthy gums, likely due to the close and intimate connection to the mouth - the gateway to your whole body. Make healthy gums a priority - your life may depend on it. Call James Street Dentists today. Healthy gums never bleed.
WE’VE ALL BEEN there. Putting in the hard yards to grow out your brows only to have them waxed away within seconds. The natural fanstyle fronts of your brows need to be embraced and not tampered with as they symbolise head and heart connection. Untrained therapists that wax too wide in-between the brows are usually unsure of how to tame natural brow fans. Eyebrows can show an array of human emotion or a person’s point of view and the brow hair growth itself plays a very important part in what the eyebrows whisper to us about someone’s personality. The key for a fuller-looking brow: keeping the growth constant. To aid in this process, we have created our very own Brow & Lash Booster Growth Serum, which assists to grow back over-plucked or finer brow hairs. It’s 100 per cent natural and nurtures your adult hairs in the growth cycle to live longer; therefore, allowing the baby hairs to thrive. The end result being natural, well-maintained brows.

DERMATOLOGY

WHAT IS A MIGRAINE?
WHAT’S IN YOUR LIPSTICK?
SAVING FACE STARTS HERE
MIGRAINE AFFECTS OVER 13 per cent of the global population with females two times more likely than males (18 per cent vs 10 per cent) to suffer from the disease. An individual is said to have a migraine if within his/her lifetime there have occurred 5 or more attacks of headache, each lasting 4-72 hours, severe enough to restrict routine daily activity, and accompanied by nausea and or light/sound sensitivity. Only 20-25 per cent of migraineurs experience aura, and visual changes are the most common form. There can be spots, zigzags or crescents, flashes of light, or losing sight partially or fully. The shimmering that occurs in aura when vision is obscured is referred to as a ‘scintillating scotoma’, where a scotoma is a blind spot in vision. The aetiology of migraine is multifactorial and influenced by diet, lifestyle factors, and hormonal changes. Migraine has a clear tendency to run in families and this suggests a strong genetic component.
A FRIEND ONCE said to me, “On our struggle days, we just wear our lipstick a little brighter”. Who doesn’t love a great lippy to lift their day? Did you know that when we wear lipstick we can’t help but eat about thirty percent of it? While Ancient Grecians would ingest white lead and vermillion, sadly many of the current mainstream lippies still contain some pretty questionable ingredients, like petrol derivatives, potential hormone disruptors and other skin irritants. When looking to purchase your next lipstick, look to Australia and New Zealand brands as they have many cruelty-free, naturally long lasting, strong pigmented brands on offer. Most of these brands pack their lipsticks full of nourishing ingredients like soothing jojoba and avocado oil, shea and cocoa butter as well as candellila wax. If you are new to bold colours, my top tip is applying your lippy and adding a neutral lip gloss over the top. This will soften the edges of a bright lip ever so slightly so you can flash those lips with style for any occasion, day or night.
FOR MANY PEOPLE, there are no words more anxiety-inducing than “adult acne”, and we have noticed there have been an increasing number of patients who are struggling with adult acne. Typically, we find this is largely due to an increase in stress and poor diet. Your skin is the largest organ in your body, and the food you eat and the lifestyle you lead can dramatically impact the appearance and health of your skin. General advice to people with skin concerns is to reassess their diet and consider whether it could be more balanced. A healthy, balanced diet involves plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, lean meats, and low glycaemic index foods (such as whole grains, unprocessed breads, and rices). Westside Dermatology offer a nurse-led acne solutions clinic where you will be provided expert advice in skin care, make up, acne treatments and scar revision. This is an excellent solution for those patients wishing to take the first step in acne management without seeing a consultant dermatologist.

THE TOXIC TURNDOWN It’s time to rid yourself of the toxic people in your life. Courtney Frank tells you how. ALMOST EVERYONE HAS encountered a negative person at some point in their life. It’s hard to avoid toxic people; they might be your friends, your colleagues or unfortunately, even your family. The fact is toxic people bring you down. They pull you under, suffocate you and stop you from reaching your true potential. It’s brutal, but true. It’s time to take some control back. Do yourself a favour and rid yourself of the people holding you back in life. Here’s how to get started. DON’T EXPECT THEM TO CHANGE THEIR WAYS The first thing you need to accept when it comes to removing toxic people from your life, is that you can’t change them. Try as you might and as 94
much as they say they will change, the truth is, they just won’t. More often than not, toxic people are motivated by their own personal agendas. You might think that you can encourage a change in them, but ultimately when you accept that you can’t, it will become much easier to remove them from your life. SET CLEAR BOUNDARIES This step is all about saying no and setting clear boundaries. Usually I’m all about saying yes and being open to opportunities but in this instance, the word no is your most powerful weapon. You’ve already made the commitment to take your life back and the fact of the matter is that when you say no, you show self-control and confidence. It
won’t be easy, but every time you say no, little by little you’re regaining your power and limiting their toxic influence over you. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH POSITIVITY No one ever said that removing toxic people from your life would be easy. In fact, if the toxic person in question is someone you care for deeply, it will be extremely difficult to go through this process. Which is why it’s more important than ever to surround yourself with people who do encourage you, support you and lift you up. These are the people who will remind you why you’re doing this and who will always make you feel loved, cherished and happy. These are the people who should matter most in your life. SEPTEMBER17

THERE IS NO facial feature quite as important and lusted after than those ever-elusive perfect brows. Achieving said brow-perfection is no easy feat. We pluck, we fill, we tint, we wax. The right shaped brow can give you an instant facelift, making you appear five years younger in thirty minutes. But for some, fullness does not come naturally to brows. Whether your hair is fine and fair, you’ve been over-plucking for years, or your once well-maintained brows have been waxed away by an untrained technician, no
amount of brow pencil will achieve the volume you’re wanting. Thankfully, The Brow Bar has introduced a range of products that will make maintaining perfectlydefined brows between appointments simple. When it comes to brows, the girls at The Brow Bar know a thing or two about perfecting the arch, colour and consistency of the brow. The key for a fuller-looking brow is keeping growth constant. To aid in this process, they have created their very own Brow & Lash Booster Growth Serum,
available exclusively at The Brow Bar. This specially formulated serum can assist to grow back overplucked or finer brow hairs. With brow treatments including Brow Whispering and Brow Lift-Shaping and products to maintain definition in between appointments, The Brow Bar is a one-stop-shop for achieving more defined, fuller brows. surf’s up!
BEST OF BALI Bali’s relaxed vibes, beautiful scenery and wallet-friendly prices keep Australians coming back for more. But there’s much more to Bali than just cheap market shopping, writes Kiri Johnston. IF YOU’RE LOOKING for crystal clear water to swim in all day long, Uluwatu in the south of Bali has beaches like you’ve never seen before attracting surfers from around the world. With only a short drive from Jimbaran Bay, dinner can be enjoyed on the beach at one of the delicious seafood restaurants. For a more upmarket holiday, bustling Seminyak is the place to be. Live in luxury in a private villa, shop the fashion boutiques, visit the trendy beach bars and experience a bit of nightlife. Foodie lovers, this is the right spot to try every cuisine under the sun. Does a low-key atmosphere without the crowds sound like your cup of tea? The humble town of Canggu is paradise for surfers, chillers and laidback souls. Watch the sunset over the ocean laying on a bean bag on the beach with a Bintang in hand. Nusa Dua is the more exclusive region known 96
for its 5-star resorts and water sports making this a great spot for families to stay. The kids can enjoy scuba diving, banana boating and oceanwalking while the adults sip cocktails in a cabana. Experience some true Balinese culture in the tranquil town of Ubud. The mountainous town is famous for it’s arts and crafts scene, rice terraces, fresh organic food cafes, waterfalls, yoga retreats and the monkeys of course! It’s easy to get lost strolling through the streets exploring everything to offer. For those who are a little more adventurous, make a trip to one of the islands surrounding Bali for the ultimate tropical getaway. Take a boat ride or book a few nights stay at one of the many islands that are all unique in their own way. Explore rainforests, reefs to snorkel in, lush forests for hiking that are untouched and much slower than the mainland.
HOT TIPS: BE SURE TO TRY SOME AUTHENTIC INDONESIAN CUISINE, YOU CAN EAT WESTERN FOOD WHEN YOU’RE HOME. ALWAYS TIP THE LOCALS IF YOU RECEIVE GREAT SERVICE, THEY WILL BE MORE THAN GRATEFUL. PAY A LITTLE MORE AT THE MARKETS FOR HANDMADE ARTISAN GOODS, THE HOURS SPENT CREATING THEM ARE WELL WORTH IT.
