Spring is well and truly here (along with our Spring Issue) and that means two things: it’s time for new beginnings and to celebrate old favourites! This month’s cover collaboration is a spectacular partnership with Spicers Retreats, Mercedes-Benz Toowong and Pacific Fair, and one that has me dreaming of luxurious getaways, leisurely lunches and discovering everything that is wonderful about our pocket of Australia. In the spirit of ‘new’, we got behind the wheel of the magnificent new Mercedes-Benz A-Class from MercedesBenz Toowong and hit the road in search of adventure. Armed with the latest collections available at Pacific Fair– from stunning prints to bold silhouettes–we rode in luxury as we explored three of Brisbane’s most spectacular retreats. We followed our wanderlust all the way to Spicers Clovelly Estate Montville, Tamarind Retreat & Spa Maleny, and Spicers Balfour Hotel in New Farm. You can see more of this spectacular collaboration on p. 24. Because spring is also about celebrating our old loves, we’ve also caught up with some of our favourite local fashionistas to learn which pieces in their wardrobe they reach for every single season (p. 12). Our interview with Euan Doidge (p. 20), one of the lead performers in Simon Phillips’ spectacular production Priscilla Queen of the Desert, gets you up-close-andpersonal with one of Australia’s most iconic stories.

riving through the lush Sunshine Coast Hinterlands is always a treat but doing so in a top of the line vehicle makes the experience a whole lot better. It only makes sense that a group of Stylers would travel in style, so the A-Class was the perfect choice for our cheeky Friday trip to Maleny and Montville. For work, of course. We were lucky enough to be one of the first to try out this impeccable vehicle from Mercedes-Benz Toowong, having high expectations after attending the magnificent launch on Seadeck earlier in August. It’s safe to say that driving a car has never been more enjoyable, and it really is a car that you get to know. Literally. It’s most anticipated feature, the Mercedes-Benz User Experience, allows you to speak directly to the car. You simply say

‘Hey Mercedes,’ speak the command of your liking, and the car will do exactly what you ask. Hey Mercedes, can you turn up the AC? Hey Mercedes, can you play my favourite song? It’s revolutionary voice control – you have to experience it to believe it. The beloved Queensland coasts are just a snippet of where the A-Class can take you in its sporty and exciting design. Drive to the destination of your choice in ultimate luxury, with state of the art features such as a multimedia system, active brake assist, wireless charging and touch inputs. To put it simply, it’s a great drive. Corners are easily handled, especially up those windy roads to Montville and Maleny, and the long list of safety features make for a carefree trip every time. It also has a state of the art navigation system with 3D buildings on screen. Even if you’re notoriously

known for getting lost, you won’t be any more driving the A-Class. It’s a simple, natural, and intuitive drive, that is more enjoyable the more you drive it. MERCEDES-BENZ TOOWONG 135 MOGGILL RD, TARINGA P 3870 4500 MBTOOWONG.COM.AU

MY WARDROBE MVP When it comes around to spring cleaning each year, there are just some things we can’t bear to part with. We chat to three Brisbane women about their most prized wardrobe possession.

MARGAUX PARKER RADIO ANNOUNCER TRIPLE M Whose style do you admire? Karl Lagerfeld, Christine Centenera and Victoria Beckham What fashion item are you currently obsessing over? Miu Miu Gold Glitter Sneakers One brand to wear for the rest of your life? If I had a never ending money pit Chanel, but because I don’t, Decjuba as it serves my penchant for comfort, affordability and all things monochrome. Describe your style? Classic, tailored, comfortable and mostly black. I like to play with layers, fabrics and textures but not very confident with colours and prints. Fave Australian label? I have a few local Brisbane designers that I love to support. White Label Noba, Sacha Drake & Leina Broughton but on a national commercial level Camilla & Marc. Sass & Bide. For special occasions and events Zimmerman. What wardrobe item I can’t bear to throw out? Vintage Rabbit Fur - This was a piece I inherited from my late Grandmother Dawn O’Brien. It’s one of the few things I have of hers. I remember when I was growing up her wardrobe always seemed so glamorous and she used to let my cousin and I play dress ups and do fashion parades for her. Although it’s not in line with the whole faux fur movement it’s a piece that has sentimental value and I could never part with.

LIZ GOLDING STYLIST Whose style do you admire? Iris Apfel is right at the top. I love her flamboyance, her sense of fun and her love of accessories. I also really love @andandreastyle from Perth, she has a wonderful aesthetic and great taste. Locally, I love Mary Dickinson of @bmaryd. What will be your next fashion purchase? I have a thing about Rubyyaya jackets and there is a pink one I am going to snap up before the weather is too warm to wear it. Also, I am waiting for Pamela Easton’s second range because she tells me there are the most incredible pieces with lots of handwork. What wardrobe item I can’t bear to throw out? I have a very beautiful vintage black lace blouse that I bought with my first significant paycheck 200 years ago. I wear it every few years but it was frail when I bought it and after so long it is on borrowed time now. I put black vintage glass buttons down the back years ago and wore it to the races. It is lovely still and makes me sentimental about my second hand treasures.

I seriously have so many! Describe your style? I like to mix it up! Fave Australian label? Zimmerman Fave fashion era/trend? The 90’s What wardrobe item I can’t bear to throw out? The belt I’m wearing! I’ve had it for years, have no idea where I got it from but I have a love/hate relationship with it. It always seems to make its way out of my wardrobe when I’m wearing black. #HAIRGOALS We chat to Jaye Edwards, Director of Edwards and Co, about his hair must haves and what you should be asking for at your next appointment. Top 3 colour trends for summer 2018/19?

Top 3 cut trends for summer 2018/19?

All about high gloss, girls! The solid, single-toned look for brunettes is no longer. We will notice a comeback for multitoned, bronze brunettes that have a high-gloss “glass” finish.

Mid-length movement While we’ve seen bobs and above-the-shoulder cuts make a comeback this year, moving into summer the mid-length chop, sitting just on the chest, will make for the perfect look. Super sexy and super versatile.

Lowlight, not highlight Blondes will be wanting more texture in their colour this summer. To achieve this request lowlights, not highlights. This will give more dimension and depth – totally on-trend. Rosé hair, don’t care! Say hello to rose-gold hair. Celebrity influence has led to this trend and we’ll be seeing an influx of clients requesting the blonde and pink-hues blend. To achieve this statement look, hair-lovers should ask for more gold with a hint of rose.

Perfectly imperfect Say goodbye to solid base lines and scissorsharp cuts, because our clients will be wanting softer finishes, more layering and textured ends to complement their dimensional colours. Bangs, baby! Fringes are here to STAY – I’m not sure they ever left. A soft and textured fringe is ideal for levelling-up anyone’s look, plus they’re so on point this season!

Everything’s coming up roses

“CYMBIDIUM

ORCHID, is the flower of Spring, 2018 they’re MAKING A COMEBACK”

Internationally recognised florist Matthew Landers gives us all the details on spring florals. WORDS BETHAN WARRIOR

I

f there’s one thing that epitomises the presence of spring it’s fresh flowers. As the weather warms, the buds begin to bloom and we get to enjoy another season of fabulous beauty and fragrance. One man who knows flowers like the back of his hand is Matthew Landers. The Perth based florist is one of Australia’s most renowned floral designers, known for his internationally acclaimed designs and the works of art produced on home soil. As an artist and an entrepreneur, Matthew not only owns his luxury florist and floristry academy, but also trots the globe competing in internationally recognised competitions. This year he placed second at the Chelsea Flower Show in the UK… definitely robbed! We asked Matthew the best part of being a florist and he remarked, “With abundant choices of these beautiful materials, it always brings out your creativity and challenges you to maximise this short season.” When we asked about Matthew’s spring wedding predictions he said, “Loads of texture and a bolder use of colour.” Take note Brissy brides! For Matthew, flowers are a luxury product. They’re the gift with real personality. Make sure you take the time to stop, smell and most importantly, enjoy all the blooms available this season.

Top tip to keep flowers fresher for longer? Use a small amount of Household Bleach in the water to stop bacteria from growing and make sure you change the water every second day. STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

A floral fad you wish would die out? Dyed Flowers. They’re putrid. We have so, so many beautiful natural colours….Why do rainbow roses even need to exist!?

What are your pet peeves when it comes to wedding work? I don’t like the super short turnaround times and the unrealistic expectations of ‘Pinterest Brides’. PAGE 15

and melted haloumi. They’re both traditional Greek meals and were delightful little ‘something somethings’ to try before getting into the good stuff. Next came the hero dish and any meat lover’s dream, the Lefkas legend platter. This epic mixed grill board of quail, cutlets, and lamb and chicken souvlakia and souvla is perfect for a big family get together or if you just can’t decide on one thing. The meats were succulent and tender, marinated in house in John’s secret spice that not even his wife knows the recipe to. We paired this with their refreshing strawberry rain cocktail. We then tucked in to everyone’s favorites – yiros, moussaka, and spanakopita. You’re sure to have tasted versions of these dishes before,

but we guarantee none will compare to John’s. All are freshly made with local ingredients and presented to perfection. If large portion sizes are your thing, you won’t be disappointed at all. Actually, good luck to anyone attempting to finish one of Lefkas’ enormous mains. To finish, we squeezed in the much loved traditional desserts, balaklava and honey puffs. These too did not disappoint – it’s surprising how much room you can make in your stomach when the food is so darn tasty. If you want to dive more into the amazing Greek culture, Lefkas has live music, traditional Greek dancing, and entertainment every Friday night. JOHN & ANGELA THEOHARIS

I

f you’ve never been to Greece but have longed for the taste of fresh seafood, marinated lamb, and crispy yiros, you can strop dreaming right now. Lefkas Taverna is a family owned restaurant run by Head Chef John Theoharis and his wife Angela. Serving authentic Greek cuisine is what they do best, and boy oh boy do they do it well. While we’ve never actually been to Greece, we imagine this is exactly what it tastes like. The adorable restaurant is bursting with tradition, with sky blue walls, crisp white accents and a few prints of the classic Greek scenery. It’s impossible not to fall in love with the place before you’re even seated at your table. They’re a family that’s extremely proud of their heritage, and it shows. To start off we began with authentic Greek ouzo and an absolute classic, the Poikilia Mezedon or a meze platter, which included dolmades, olives, cucumber, carrot, fetta, marinated octopus, pita and a selection of dips. The standout on the board was the tarama, a deliciously salty, house made dip made of fish roe, garlic, and lemon. The recipe was handed down to John from his grandmother, and is so popular they now sell it by the tub! While waiting for mains we tasted the saganaki – grilled sheep’s milk cheese shaped like pizza and tasting like heaven, and the manitari – grilled field mushrooms with garlic

A NIGHT

ON

The arts scene in Brisbane is better than ever, with something to watch, listen, or engage in almost every night. Laura Frendon dived into the special appearnces coming to brisbane this month.

H

aving had a love of performing since the age of 10 and recently playing the role of Felicia in Norwegian Cruise Lines’ production of Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Euan Doidge is extremely grateful to be playing the same role in the current Australian Tour. ‘It’s so special to me. It’s a story of love, friendship and acceptance, and I believe that is so important in today’s society.” It’s easy to be fooled by the glitz and glam of a stage show into thinking the performers have it easy. The natural talent they exude on stage only reinforces this, allowing audiences everywhere to believe they have the best jobs in the world. While every performer will tell you that they absolutely do, what is surprising to learn is how much work goes into a single show, and how early stars begin to prepare for a single performance. Euan starts his mornings early, especially when performing two shows a day. “I need to give my body and voice a good few hours of ‘wake up Jeff ’ time before I head into work.” It’s all about prep, coffee, and food, and we can’t blame him. Performing two shows a day for weeks on end has got to be exhausting. To keep up his stamina Euan enjoys going to the gym most days, but avoiding cardio. He does enough of that in the show! “For me, it’s weightlifting and strength training, and on days where I feel like changing it up I’ll do an F45 class.”

Squeezing in time for himself is no easy feat, but by midday, he’s completed a long list of errands and is ready to head in for his first show. By midday, pre-show prep has officially kicked in, which means more coffee and a quick snack before glittering up for the matinee show. Before stepping on stage Euan has a few rituals to go through before the show starts. Firstly, he eats a few lollies from a jar he keeps in his fridge at all times – yes, cold lollies! Next, before leaving his dressing room, he sings a specific line from the show, before meeting up with the Divas. “I MUST sing with the Divas, not as fiercely as them of course!” He also sings another part of a song that is being performed onstage when being hoisted into his harness. “Otherwise I’ll be stressed for my first song! I told you I’m weird.” Two and a half hours later, after show one is complete, Euan squeezes in a precious nana nap to recharge for the evening show. “Let’s just say a tired drag queen isn’t fun for anyone!” But there’s no rest for the wicked, as Euan must prepare once again for his evening show. To end the night and a massive day of shows, Euan likes to Netflix and chill, and perhaps even draw himself a cheeky bath. You can catch Euan and the rest of the cast of Priscilla Queen of the Desert at QPAC from 26 September.

It’s easy to be fooled by the glitz and glam of a stage show into thinking the performers have it easy. PAGE 20

20 Years In The Making

ROB, ENZO & CHRIS DI SIPIO

In the market for a new car? We’ve found the family business that is doing things differently to get you on the road.

I

t’s notoriously known that buying a used car is no easy feat. If you have ever bought (or tried to buy) a used car, you may have been met with a lot of stress, frustration, and disappointment. This is because selling quality and reliable used cars takes considerable skill, care, and attention. Kedron Car Centre operates on old fashioned values, cherishing their reputation, customer referrals and friendships over absolutely everything. From the humble beginnings of a motor mechanic with a passion for providing quality cars, Enzo Di Sipio opened Kedron Car Centre, growing it into a family owned business with over 100 used cars in stock. His sons, Robert and Chris joined the business in 2003 and 2005, and their longest serving staff member Bret, who joined the company 20 years ago, is still with them today. Most of the cars at Kedron Car Centre are RACQ inspected for peace of mind, and the quick and extremely easy purchasing process is something the staff are commended on. STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

The team are committed to helping you gain the required knowledge to confidently buy the car of your dreams. It’s this security that causes customers to continuously return, as they know they’re always making a wise and suitable purchase. A one stop shop means you can bring in your old car, trade it in on a newly selected one, finance it with Kedron Car Centre, obtain an extended warranty and have it insured, quite often all on the same day. Their impeccable and trustworthy service is now preceding them, with many new and previous customers choosing to buy cars sight un-seen. This is due to customers knowing exactly what to expect – making the process of purchasing even easier. The careful preparation given to each of their vehicles puts customers at ease and makes the entire process, which was once stereo-typed as incredibly stressful, much more pleasant and worry free. EDITOR’S PICK:

I love the elegance and beauty of Clovelly Estate. The long winding, tree-lined driveway down to the property instantly feels like you’re arriving somewhere exclusive. It’s such a gorgeous spot for a weekend away. PAGE 26

Turn off your phone and enjoy the scenery. The spicy and exotic food at Tamarind Retreat suits my taste in food. I love how you can dine in various parts of the property and there’s live music on a Sunday during lunch - how

chill would that be? Balfour Hotel is just divine - it’s ‘boutique hotel’ at its best and although it’s in the heart of bustling New Farm, it is such an oasis of tranquility. Can’t wait to get back to all of them. SEPTEMBER 2018

Refresh your frames As your most-important accessory, your spectacles shouldn’t be overlooked this spring. GEOMETRIC INTEREST Experimenting with geometric shapes is one way to add instant personality to your frames. This season is seeing a lot of octagons, squares and retro cat eye shapes at the forefront. For this look, keep the rest of your outfit simple. COLOUR-TINTED LENSES Embrace a little bit of colour into your wardrobe this spring by adding pops of pink and red to your spectacles. While previous seasons have been all about coloured frames, right now we can’t go past colour-tinted lenses in hues of rose, lavender and blush. VERSATILE NEUTRALS As much as we love a quirky accessory, it’s no secret that at least one versatile set of frames is key to any good wardrobe. Brisbane’s Changing Cityscape Not just a country town any more. Words by Siobhan Taylor With sprawling green spaces, cloud-scraping high-rises and world-class developments, it comes as no surprise that Brisbane is moving out of the shadow of it’s Sydney and Melbourne counterparts. Brisbane is thriving thanks to new-to-town developments that are carrying Brisbane into the forefront. One such development is the Queen’s Wharf precinct which is set to include five new hotels (including the illustrious Ritz

QUEENS WHARF - ARTIST IMPRESSION

Carlton), over 50 food and beverage outlets, a new department store, a riverfront outdoor cinema and more. Slightly further along the Brisbane River you’ll find Ground Zero for the Howard Smith Wharves project which will see a new foodie precinct and culture complex added to the currently under-utilised riverfront space. And, how could we not mention the spectacular Brisbane Quarter precinct that has popped upon 300 George Street? A blend

of riverside dining, luxury retail and stunning residential apartments, it truly is a celebration of the changing face of Brisbane. With precincts and retailers that are already performing exceptionally well, these new developments only make Brisbane more appealing. This month we’re shining a light on the cornerstone retailers, boutiques and salons that are taking Brisbane’s new frontier and making it the lifestyle-epicentre of Australia.

ROTISSERIE CHICKEN WITH SPRING VEGETABLES AND A SWEET CORN CREMA

Start your evening on the Verandah in the Colonial Bar enjoying a delicious plate of oysters, before heading downstairs for a Negroni and some crumbed stuffed olives. Chat away to other patrons until your appetite spikes again and head into the Dining Room. The nose to tail is simply divine, but if you’re after something to share, you can’t go past the Korean BBQ local fish with cucumber ribbons, pickled fennel, shittakes and Tom Yum mayo paired with a William Fevre Chablis. For mains, continue on with the shared variety and order the whole chicken cooked on rotisserie. Changing seasonally and sourced locally in the Glasshouse Mountains, it’s served with lemon, tarragon, garlic, caramelised witlof, smoked carrot and cardamom pureé, pea shoots and jus gras. A red will go nicely with this, perhaps something savoury and not too heavy such as the Samuel Gorge Grenache from McLaren Vale. Finish off dinner with a trip to the Front Bar for one of the various selections of Rum or Scotch – Oban 14 year old being one of the most popular at the moment.

Fashion Forward Hair Be on trend with this season’s hottest hair trends with Rixon Hair. Founded in 2000 by Brad and Sharon Rixon, this award-winning Brisbane salon has helped to shape the landscape of Brisbane hairdressing. Known for their understated aesthetic and high level of craftsmanship, their elevated standards and dedication to individual beauty come alive with an incredibly strong team of 16 hairdressers who specialise in either cutting, styling, or colour, with one super hairdresser who does it all. Their salon is a cut above the rest, with expanding, dusty pink floors and natural light glistening through floor to ceiling windows.

The indescribable energy clients feel when they walk into the salon is described as both uplifting and peaceful, making them feel as if they’ve been transported out of the bustling CBD and into a private oasis. For spring, the team at Rixon predict high gloss, mirror like colours and beautifully healthy hair, as well as the incorporation of accessories such as statement clips and head scarves. They also foresee blunt lines being huge, whether it’s short, chin length bobs or longer shaped cuts with emphasis on a sharper, healthier line.

Recently this year, Rixon Hair were announced as the winner of the Hair Expo Salon Design of the Year award. And it’s no surprise. With the combination of Ethiopia Kochere natural processed, Peru Cajamarca washed, and Colombia Hugo Trujillo washed, we are delighted to present a delicate, floral cup titled Springtime Blend. The first sip of espresso brings lilac and lavender up front, layered with rose, cherry and maple syrup. When served with milk, it forms into smooth, sweet and creamy butterscotch tones that lingers in your mouth. Springtime Blend will be available from 1 September at Big Bad Wolff Espresso Bar.

As the weather warms up we love seeing the resurgence of bolder and brighter trends in men’s fashion. Which is why it makes perfect sense that we will be enjoying a throwback to the era of Miami Vice with those daring yet classic 80s silhouettes. T-shirts under suits, light fabrics and baggy shapes that summarise 80s style align perfectly with our warm Brisbane climate. Eye-catching pastels are popping up all over the place this spring and men’s suiting will be no exception. So, if you’d like to add a fresh spin to your wardrobe, opt for a warm blush pink or soft blue for that effortless spring chic. Granted, we may not all have the conviction of Bowie or Prince’s flair when it comes to fashion but this season is the time to embrace a bolder clothing aesthetic. This can be as simple as adding a pop of colour with your accessories or try clashing patterns to make for a powerful statement.

If a tooth has decay or is damaged in some way with chips or wear it will require a filling to repair the damage. In some cases, where the damage is significant, the tooth will require a crown to give it adequate protection and support. Previously, if a tooth required a crown, the two options available were full gold crowns or porcelain fused-to-metal crowns. However, there have been significant advances in crown materials over recent years and we now have the added option of newer “all ceramic” materials which offer more advantages and possibilities when treating badly damaged teeth. These new materials are very high in strength and can be bonded directly to the tooth, allowing to restore teeth that previously couldn’t retain a crown. These materials are also tooth coloured and can be perfectly matched to ensure a seamless integration into your smile.

PERSONAL CONFIDENCE with Kelli Boucher

VARICOSE VEINS with Dr Nicholas Kemp

Deciding which care is right for you

Feel confident in your outfit

It’s time to spring into action

Private or public? Obstetrician or midwife? These are the choices all soon-to-be mothers have to consider, In today’s climate, a lot of our decisions are made based on cost. Whether its high or low, it does factor highly into our consideration. However, one vital consideration is value. What value will your chosen care bring to you, regardless of the cost? Ultimately, whatever will make you feel the most comfortable, safe and confident during your pregnancy is the right choice for you. Sure, ask your friends and family for advice, but just remember their experience will undoubtedly be different to yours. The positive or negative lenses they view pregnancy, birth and parenting could be more a hindrance than a help when making your own decisions. Instinct may just be your best port of call and what is important to you is paramount.

Looking through magazines to find what’s ‘in’ isn’t for everyone. Your style profile, personality, and body shape determine what will look best on you, however, that’s all outer game stuff. It’s hard to be taken seriously if you don’t feel like you belong in your outfit. Researchers recently made women perform math problems in a jumper, and then in swimsuits, and as expected, the women performed almost half as well when they were dressed in swimsuits. If you feel self-conscious about your image, your mental performance decreases and so does your confidence. Many people use clothes to portray themselves in a way that’s inauthentic. This is self-sabotage! Anyone can tell you what to wear, but very few people can help you get past the blocks preventing you from owning an outfit, which in turn, causes the outfit to own you. It all starts from the inside and radiates out.

With the temperatures rising and the winter days behind us, it’s time to pull out your shorts and dresses and put those trousers back in the wardrobe. However, for those affected by varicose veins, the decision to go out with bare legs can be a little harder. Varicose veins affect both men and women and can appear on the legs, ankles and feet. They’re caused by a variety of conditions, but most commonly are hereditary or the influence of various lifestyles, such as being overweight or standing and sitting for long periods of time. Hormonal changes such as pregnancy or menopause can also contribute to them appearing earlier. If left untreated, varicose veins can lead to leg ulcers, swollen legs, pain, and increased risk of blood clots. Spring is a great time to seek treatment for varicose veins as there is ample recovery time before that trip to Noosa you’ve been planning.

Are you being the best Dad you can be?

Understanding HA Filler

Why you shouldn’t ignore the snore

Being a dad can be tough sometimes as we are often called upon to be the disciplinarian, but that goes with the territory. While it’s sometimes a difficult job, there are lots of benefits to being a great dad, and there are a number of ways for you to step up and become one. Show commitment to your wife and try to always be attentive and kind. She’ll know that herself and the children are a priority for you and that there is nothing you wouldn’t do for them and their well-being. After a full day of work, your kids will throw themselves on you and scramble for your attention. Enjoying them and being enjoyed by them will pay off in spades. Look at the interaction you have with your children and the quality of communication you have with your wife. This will ensure you’re being the best dad you can be.

It’s safe to say that when it comes to cosmetic and skincare technology, we’re living in the future. With more powerful lasers and natural-looking fillers, our quest for smooth, bright skin is now within reach. One such advancement is HA (Hyaluronic Acid) fillers. Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally found in the skin and is largely considered a breakthrough-ingredient for anti-ageing treatments. As skin ages, hyaluronic acid levels drop. As hyaluronic acid absorbs moisture and keep the skin plump, this results in loss of volume in our skin, typically our cheeks and jawline. This results in fine lines and more visible wrinkles. HA fillers reintroduce hyaluronic acid to cells, allowing the skin to plumpen once again. HA fillers can be strategically placed to lift certain areas of the face and, with minimal downtime, is an easy way to instantly refresh your appearance.

Interrupted sleep equates to a life less lived for the snorer and the bed partner. Irritability, difficulty concentrating at work and impaired memory can become your new normal, and it can creep up so insidiously that you put these feelings down to stress and aging. Snoring causes disrupted sleep for all parties, however it may often appear that the snorer has no trouble sleeping at all. This isn’t the case, as snoring may be a clue to a much more serious problem – sleep apnoea. If you have this condition, your airway is closing off repeatedly while you sleep. You rouse throughout the night, often waking to go to the bathroom and find you wake in the morning with a headache, struggling to get out of bed. The dentists at James Street Dentists have undergone post graduate courses in Sleep Medicine, and are able to discuss your snoring and get you the help you need.

Collaboration & Continuity Experience peace of mind and quality maternity care at Kindred Midwifery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology. Kaitlin Reid and Will Milford opened Kindred in 2017. They realised they shared the same philosophy in providing care to women and families, and felt there was a gap in existing options for maternity care, especially for collaborative private midwifery care and postnatal care. The core of Kindred is recognising that obstetricians and midwives hold complementary skills that are integral to good care. Midwives and obstetricians work together every day. However, they’re often perceived as warring professions due to a simplistic view of pregnancy and birth. Also, the structure of maternity care in Australia has essentially forced families to choose a one or

the other approach. Kindred provide private midwifery and obstetrics, working together to allow families’ access to a ‘best of both worlds’ approach within a small like-minded team. They deliver complete continuity from the beginning of pregnancy through to six weeks of in-home postnatal care, and offer access to private midwifery care during labour and birth at the Mater Mother’s Private Hospital. Fostering relationships between families and their obstetricians and midwives, is Kindred’s main priority, taking an individual approach to each family they care for.. Coaching you to a better life PBR Coaching now offer individual and relationship counselling in the heart of Brisbane CBD. DIRECTOR/HEAD COUNSELLOR & COACH PAUL BAKER

Getting help from a professional counsellor can help you make significant changes in your life, as well as in the lives of those around you. Individual counselling can be specific to you as a person and the goals and outcomes you wish to achieve. It can help you become more selfaware, gain more emotional consciousness, and give you the ability to identify and express feelings in a safe environment while working through any personal issues you may be experiencing.

With this type of counselling you can also work through your problems at your own desired pace, while at the same time, gaining valuable insight into the reasons why they are continuing to occur. Both individual and relationship coaching have a broad appeal to many people who can easily relate to an environment of training and learning. Most recognise that coaching plays a big part in the success of any pursuit, and in addition, find coaching engaging, faster paced

and more direct than therapy sessions. PBR Coaching’s newest office is situated in the heart of our city, making it a convenient location for clients who work in the CBD to visit. It’s easy to find and access during working hours every Tuesday, and those looking to engage in counselling can easily make an appointment via phone or via their website. SNIP SNIP Brooklyn Beauty Bar has released new cut and colour services at their James St salon. We asked Founder Brooke Jesberg why she’s taken the leap into hair. Why do you feel hair is the right fit for your beauty bar? Clients come to us for their pre-event makeups and nails, but have been asking us for years to do their hair as well. We opened our Blow Dry Bar a year ago to dip our toes in the water and it was a smooth transition, as makeup and up-styling were already a key component of the business. We’ve now gathered a great team of hair stylists and feel it’s the right time to introduce cuts PAGE 48

and colours. The demand from our clients to be a one stop shop has always been a major factor in the business. What’s different about getting you hair done at Brooklyn? The biggest difference is the convenience. Our staff have specialised in ‘multi-beautifying’ for years, so whether it’s getting your lashes and manicure done at the same time or makeup and a pedicure, our team has it down to a fine art. There’s nothing worse

than sitting in your hair salon for hours and then walking out knowing that you still need to get your brows and spray tan done across town before a big night out. Now, with the addition of cuts and colours, clients only have to visit one salon for all of their hair and beauty needs!. A Balancing Act Sam Patterson, Director of Duke Realty, chats about work life balance and the Brisbane property market.

SAM, JADA, CRUZ AND LADY

PAGE 50

Tell us a bit about your family. I have three young children, Cruz (10), Jada (8) and Lady (4), and have been married to my wife Rebeka for 12 years. We both share a real commitment to working hard. Describe your work/life balance. I started Duke 18 months ago with the dawning realisation that I needed greater work life balance. While it’s true that real estate isn’t a typical 9-5 job, it does also provide a high degree of flexibility. I can run the sideline at Cruz’s footy games, watch Jada race at athletics carnivals, or take Lady to ballet. It’s funny how often some of my best working relationships and most interesting listings come about by being involved in different communities. Why did you transition into real estate? I wanted to create a boutique agency focusing on select listings and delivering a first class and highly personalised level of service. I previously worked in the construction industry, which has given me a different perspective and some unique insights to bring to the real estate field. I love homes and the built environment, what they represent to families and how they shape communities. I love the workmanship, I respect the hard work, and I admire the quality delivered in the final product. What do you think has driven your success? I am, by nature, an extremely motivated and driven person. I believe that adversity only makes you stronger and that resilience and a never say die attitude are the key to success. I draw focus and inspirtation from the famous Theodore Roosevelt speech, “The Man In The Arena.” That to me, sums up success. I’ve been in real estate for the past 10 years and have a strong understanding of how to highlight the selling point of various properties. My

experience has assisted me in turning over $620m in four years. What are some of the biggest property trends right now? It’s of little surprise that Brisbane, as a traditional timber and tin town that really values character housing, has seen an explosion in Hamptons style homes that combine indoor and outdoor spaces with a relaxed and sophisticated style. It’s really exciting to see Brisbane residents and their architects taking more risks, particularly in high end hot spots, drawing on a range of different styles. Modern and palm springs architecture is really being embraced. How do you get the best results for your clients? There is a science behind marketing and getting enquiries to generate leads, ensuring top dollar for my clients’ homes. Over my time in the industry I have learnt that styling and presentation of a home is what sells. I advise my clients to focus on home styling and photography. I take a lot of time when photographing architecturally designed homes to make sure we get the right angles that work for the homes aesthetic appeal. What are the keys to property investment? Invest in areas with the potential for growth and a strong return. This means choosing a property in a location that will be in demand, taking into consideration connection to services, infrastructure, and the proximity to schools and amenities. Lifestyle considerations are also important, such as the existence of recreational areas like parks, cafes, and dining precincts. I am currently listing a few investment properties within inner-city Brisbane that are in areas with fantastic urban development. READ MORE ONLINE DUKE REALTY P 0401 240 042 DUKEREALTY.COM.AU

WORDS BY KIM NEWLAND This month, Lauren Wellington, Director of Design Folk, shares how her team created a commercial space that evokes mood and emotion. Kindred Obstetrics and Gynaecology, a specialist maternity practice in East Brisbane wanted to create a distinctly non-clinical, welcoming space where their patients feel supported and celebrated. Design Folk’s handcrafted joinery and balance of a tonal colour palette throughout the practice creates a uniquely-soothing vibe. The project landed them as a finalist in this year’s Dulux Awards, which celebrates exceptional use of colour by Australian and New Zealand designers. If considering this aesthetic for your own home, Lauren says “Allow everything to have a home to decrease clutter and use colour to create interest, focus and pop!”
