risbane in springtime. Is there anything better? Okay, maybe summer, autumn and winter. Let’s get real, BNE is all good, all year round. Yet, we locals know we’re way more than just our beautiful climate. We’ve got so much more going on. Brisbane is emerging as the enviable lil’ cuz to our Australian major city counterparts – we’re becoming quite the thriving metropolis. You can see this all around us – with abundant urban development, a bouyant property market, hip shopping and dining precincts and more. And like our ever-changing city, here at Style we too keep evolving to continually bring you the best of what Brissy has to offer. Like this new look magazine, our first print mag back since COVID struck, (BTW that’s the only time I’m mentioning that word). In this September issue of Style, we uncover our favourite hidden places (as chosen by our crew), talk to some familiar faces, present new season fashion (special thanks to our mag partner this month – Indooroopilly Shopping Centre), and essentially continue to support local business. We’re extremely grateful to the businesses who have advertised with us this month – we understand she’s a bit of a weird old market right now. Thanks guys! We’re a world class city to be proud of and a community that truly hasn’t lost its supportive, relaxed and friendly soul. Let’s go enjoy!

grew up in Argentina and came to Australia to study when I was 18 years old at Queensland College of Arts – Griffith University, graduating in design. My penchant for Brisbane started in West End where I spent most of my time. Soon after graduating, I moved to Tokyo for a couple of years working initially for GK-Design and then later for IDÉE under Teruo Kurosaki’s guidance. My parents had a fashion brand in Argentina and my mum was the lead designer, so I guess I was always surrounded by creatives, art and design. As a family, we used to travel a lot and always visited galleries, museums and cool architecture everywhere we went. These days, travel is my biggest inspiration along with my kids. At every level they are my grounding. My work has taken me all over the world to Buenos Aires, Brazil, Tokyo, Barcelona, Milan, L.A. and Havana. The ability to

move around has given me the opportunity to work on some deliciously diverse projects with remarkable clients. The idea of constantly seeking to innovate in everything we do at Derlot, and seeing it come to life, is probably the most rewarding aspect of the job. Across Brisbane, we have been at the forefront of many exciting projects such as Limes Hotel, Woolly Mammoth, Alfredo’s, Alfred & Constance, Chester Street Bakery, Morning After, Yolk, and PingPong. When it comes to design, I feel it must be at the forefront of the new normal. Innovation and design thinking will be a must for all aspects of life and I feel very optimistic about the future. Humanity is entering a new phase and it’s an opportunity for our world to come together and progress to a more sustainable and equitable future. We can’t afford to eff around anymore – this is a wakeup call! THERE ARE SOME VERY COOL PROJECTS IN THE WORKS FOR DERLOT GROUP AROUND BRISBANE, DISCOVER THEM ALL AT STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

anmade meets Mother Earth in the most ground-breaking collaboration Brisbane has ever seen – and we mean that literally. If your head has ever been in the clouds with dreams of living in a treehouse, your wildest fantasies will find their home in Aria’s latest venture to bring our city a living, breathing, urban forest. Soaring through the Brisbane skyline, residents will be in the company of five stars, as the project labelled ‘The Urban Forest’ will serve as the first stand-alone, five-star Green Star residential building in Queensland. Featuring five times the trees found in Musgrave Park, as well as high ceilings, over-sized terraces and lush greenery, the building embraces Brisbane’s subtropical identity to deliver an unprecedented approach to Australian apartment living. Those who don’t call

the building ‘home’ will also grandly benefit from its establishment, with a green spine serving as South Brisbane’s first new public open space since South Bank. Designed by Koichi Takada, who has hand paved the way to world renowned projects in Tokyo, Shanghai, Los Angeles, Doha and, most recently, the National Museum of Qatar, The Urban Forest implements his vision of mass greening for a sustainable and greener future. “We designed away the barrier between the building and nature,” he says. “It’s important to bring such a building to Brisbane as, unlike more populated cities, Brisbane still offers abundant opportunity to define and shift to a more natural and humanised approach.” TO ENQUIRE, CONTACT ARIA LIVING 2/56 BOUNDARY ST, SOUTH BRISBANE P 0499 033 280 ARIALIVING.COM.AU

buildin’ on up This is the future of BNE’s urban developments. Coming soon to our skyline, here are seven of the most groundbreaking ventures on the horizon.

EAGLE ST PIER Our iconic waterfront precinct will be looking a little different when a $2.1 billion facelift brings two new towers, riverside dining, retail outlets and public plazas to the area. The combined 120,000 square metres of vibrant retail, office and public space will reawaken stunning cityscape and river views that have been lost for 30 years, as well as a widened Riverwalk, a new river link and a bustling retail and café strip accessible 24/7.

Beautifully repurposed heritage buildings will meet stunning contemporary architecture to house an exciting variety of cultural, retail, dining and tourist attraction spaces including a new Star Casino, replacing the existing casino and the Rosewood Hotel – Brisbane’s first 6-Star luxury hotel. FISH LANE TOWN SQUARE

Morning commutes will become a whole lot more seamless with the new 10.2km rail line from Dutton Park to Bowen Hills, including twin tunnels running under the Brisbane River and CBD. With high-capacity stations situated at Boggo Road, Woolloongabba, Albert Street, Roma Street, and Exhibition, not only will it generate thousands of jobs and activate urban development across the whole of South East Queensland, but it means more trains, more often – all you have to do is turn up and go!

A vibrant urban park will soon call Fish Lane home, with 3000 plants, public seating, lighting installations, projectors and vitrines set to strengthen the creative spirit that already infuses the lane. Designed by the architect behind the Calile Hotel, the expansive space will open up a multitude of opportunities for outdoor entertainment, dining and retail destinations, as well as laidback recreation. Welcoming new faces and framing old ones in a refreshed light, watch this space (literally).

GREEN BRIDGES

Forget Madison Square Garden! Brisbane’s new state-of-the-art entertainment arena will hold up to 18,000 people in a much-need reinvigoration of our music scene. Sitting on top of the Roma Street railway tracks, the $400 million arena will sit alongside outward-facing retail opportunities such as outdoor amphitheatres, cinemas, restaurants, bars, hotels, and residences. There will also be a Sky Lounge, which can operate as a function space when there aren’t any events, as the icing on top of the highly anticipated cultural sector.

Get home quicker, safer and with an even better view thanks to the new green bridges connecting Brisbane on foot, by bike or public transport. Linking Kangaroo Point to the CBD, Toowong to West End, St Lucia to West End and adding a new crossing at Breakfast Creek, the $550 million transformation means you can spend less time bumper-to-bumper, and more time actually being where you want to be. BRISBANE.QLD.GOV.AU

LORD MAYOR ADRIAN SCHRINNER Despite the unimaginable challenges we have faced in 2020, I have bold plans for Brisbane’s future. Major projects will drive our city out of the economic doldrums, creating thousands of jobs and supplier opportunities for local businesses. From game-changing public transport projects to fasttracked river crossings and so much more, we have major investments kicking off that will help our city get back to its vibrant best and cement our reputation as one of the world’s most liveable cities.

hether you’re Brisbane born and bred, or the River City is your new home base, there’s so much going on that it’s hard to believe it’s all in one place. It also means that supporting local doesn’t equal living small – our backyard plays host to a collection of exotic gastronomy and enticing places you’ll want to call home, so don’t be surprised if a trip around the block has you inadvertently packing your passport, too. The Brisbane recreation scene is filled to the brim with contemporary experiences for even the most seasoned Brisbanite, like everyday dining, STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

which sees flavours and tastes from around the globe fall on neighbourhood plates. Take OTTO Ristorante, for example. The two-hatted ode to The Boot was named Best Italian Restaurant in Queensland in the Delicious 100 and it’s easy to see why. The delicious institution pulls the finest local ingredients into its kitchen and sends them overseas – culinary style – in a whirl of authentic pastas and antipasti. And while you may require a few more years of watching MasterChef before you can replicate their dishes at home, you can also shop directly from their local suppliers – Simply Fresh, Prime Cut Meats and The Fish Factory.

W BRISBANE

Or, if you’d prefer a bite of the Big Apple, head to the timelessly charming and historical home bringing the legendary steakhouses of New York to Brisbane with one twist – each carefully crafted dish is made with prized Australian beef. Walter’s Steakhouse is the result of three friends who fell in love with NYC, packed their passion in their luggage, and took it home to downtown Brisbane in the form of the best grain-fed beef that’s dry-aged in-house and aged for four weeks to create a genuinely superior steak. Similarly, crisp Australian produce is celebrated with a fiesta at Rico Bar & Dining, where Spanish and Latin fare meet at Eagle Street Pier. In zesty tapas and freshly shucked oysters, you won’t believe these flavours were grown in our own backyard. An escape also doesn’t mean you need to drive hours away! With the array of charismatic accommodation housed in our city, simply changing where you hit the hay is all it takes to break free (but it certainly helps when it’s with Brisbane’s best). To help you explore where you’ve never been before, we’ve found packages that will start the relaxation before you even arrive. Sip on sunset cocktails overlooking South Bank and Mount Coot-tha on the WET Deck at W Brisbane after unwinding with a 60-minute massage at their signature AWAY spa, or wake up and unleash your inner shopaholic thanks to NEXT Hotel’s prime location on Queen Street Mall. If you prefer to be sent into a tizzy by stunning architectural designs, the Hilton Brisbane is your place to be with its Harry Seidler touch, while those seeking the city’s pulse will enjoy Pullman’s chic atmosphere and rooftop bar, 16 Antlers.

Cate Massi. Fun, fabulous and friendly, these experienced fashionistas are available to help you achieve your style goals, without any changeroom meltdowns. When it comes to a deep understanding of personal styling, Liz Golding has over 30 years of experience. “The staff at Indooroopilly Shopping Centre are fantastic and it makes my job so easy. I stay abreast of what new stock comes in and often I let my Indooroopilly clients know if something perfect for them has hit the shelves. I’ve made new friends from my styling clients and reconnected with old ones. One client I knew from work 35 years ago, she is in her 80s now!” Stacey McGregor brings a refreshing take on how shopping should make you feel, rather than how you look. “I believe in dopamine dressing, knowing that bright STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

colours can help lift your mood. I’ll help you ditch the dull and fill your wardrobe with clothes that make you want to smile each day! I’ve personally been every size, from Australian size 4 to 18, and know that the number on the tag is totally irrelevant when you are wearing something that makes your heart sing and feel like a million bucks,” she says. If you’re unsure about what clothes and colours suit you, then Cate Massi is the stylist for the job. “I believe in ‘wearing your story’ and that means adding touches of your individuality into your wardrobe. These pieces will evoke a strong sense of self and release feel-good vibes,” she says. STYLED BY Cate Massi “I chose the relaxed linen suiting in mint green (the soon to be summer “it” colour) because it’s practical and gives a cool, effortless chic vibe. Lounging in tailoring is the new 2020 styling look. It may sound like an oxymoron at first, but, to me, it sounds fabulous and will be a super versatile wardrobe addition. I always like to integrate a little something special when I style someone, so when I saw the gold initial necklaces from Oroton, I couldn’t say no!”

I truly believe we have the power to dress ourselves happy with the use of bold colours and fun prints! Yellow, the colour of sunshine, hope and happiness is just what we need more of in 2020. I love to create the illusion of a playsuit or dress using a matching set. As these can be tricky to fit our proportions, matching sets are a great way to recreate the look of a playsuit, jumpsuit or dress, yet ensuring the pieces fit perfectly by purchasing the individual sizes you need.” SEPTEMBER 2020

BOLD existence From launching her first label at the age of 24 while studying a double degree in forensic psychology, to transforming her business to a $7M a year venture, Rebecca Klodinsky has tackled some tough tasks head-on – all while navigating single motherhood. Take us back to where it all started, Frankii Swim: I designed swimwear that didn’t exist at the time in 2013, such as bralettes and seamless basics. It was a venture I created to fill a hole in my bikini drawer, and evidently a hole in the swim market. And your next brand, IIXIIST? IIXIIST (pronounced ‘exist’) is just my sweetheart, girl next door brand, all grown up. This rebrand was a choice I made after years of watching the name Frankii become trendy. My once standalone name was catching on. It had started to become watered down and I felt my identity had become lost in a sea of like-minded names that all sounded the same. It was time for growth. Enter: IIXIIST. What is the meaning behind the IIXIIST name? The play on spelling is one done on purpose. After many years in business, I have seen and also experienced first-hand issues with like-names and copycat brands. I have taken the double “i” from Frankii, and the word exist is one I wanted to incorporate due to the identity crisis I faced once I had made the decision to rebrand. I thought, “If I wasn’t going to be Frankii, how will I exist?!” How did you feel when household names such as Jets and Seafolly went into voluntary administration?

Seeing news of brands suffering amid COVID-19 and the crippling economy really upset me. The impact has completely shaken the retail and fashion industries up, and sadly it’s also had a direct effect on both outdated operators and also fast fashion brands that entered the market via Instagram. IIXIIST has been built with a digital backbone, and as advancements in technology and social media don’t slow down, neither does our growth. In your opinion, what makes a great bikini? It starts and ends with a good fit. A bikini needs to SEPTEMBER 2020

fit your body with precision, hug you, support you and sit on you properly. Bikinis are supposed to be functional and actually stay on you without any awkward wardrobe malfunctions in the water. What does the future of IIXIIST look like? Diversification. We aren’t just a house of swim anymore – the future of this brand is limitless and I’m so excited for what’s to come! For now, I can tell you we’ve just launched a kids’ collection and resort wear is close to come. STYLE PHOTOGRAPHER: CORRINA LOUISE STYLIST: DONNA KIRBY HAIR & MAKEUP: KELLY VAUGHAN, STEFAN SQUAD

From HR executive to local fashion designer, Andrijana Birtasevic of AB Label is stepping out with her latest collection of streetwear fashion – and we’re here for it.

N

o stranger to overseas travel, Andrijana Birtasevic became an expert when it came to packing her fashionable wardrobe into a solid suitcase to fly across the globe year after year. With her mother running a fashion business since she was young, the rag trade has been in her blood ever since she can remember. “When I was travelling, I realised that I was packing less and less but becoming more selective with my pieces. I found that packing a few diverse items that could be dressed up or down, that are comfortable, high quality and ontrend were the best pieces to pack and they were also the 5% of my wardrobe that I wore 95% of the time,” she says. This way of travelling became her inspiration to start AB Label – relaxed and casual streetwear inspired by revolutionary international designers such as Virgil Abloh, Maison Margiela, Balenciaga and Dior. Think logo t-shirts, oversized hoodies, deconstructed jeans and puffer jackets, perfect for the trans-seasonal Brisbane fashion scene. “It’s what I love about this city – we are mostly relaxed and casual however we can really dress up and show what fashion is all about,” says Andrijana. Just launched is their new Essentials and Nikola Tesla Collection. Yes, you heard right – the pioneer electric engineer whose name is glorified across those whisper quiet, modern, electric cars that grab our attention on the street. “Nikola Tesla is from Croatia/Serbian origin and is an inspiration to all ex-Yugoslav countries. I hope to inspire everyone, especially millennials, to do some research on Nikola Tesla, who is known as one of the world’s greatest inventors of all time for his ahead-of-his-time contributions to our modern world!” says Andrijana.

A hybrid brand between streetwear and luxury, AB Label reflects the most up-to-date trends from around the globe. “The brand is for all ages from 15 to 100 years old. With the Essentials line, we explore different concepts of branding, the spirit of a particular time and the expression of youth culture in the contemporary moment,” says Andrijana. When it comes to a younger crowd, AB Label is particularly passionate about what their clients not only want out of fashion, but life itself. “I believe that millennials are similar to previous generations when it comes to luxury fashion in that they demand quality, creative, desired and stylish pieces. The difference, however, between the digitally savvy youth and those who came before Google, is they also want respect. They want designers to honour the natural proportions and different sizes of the human body, and be more environmentally responsible,” says Andrijana. When it comes to the materials, AB Label fabrics are not only premium quality, but 95% of their fabrics are natural. “We pay close attention to how these fabrics feel. All our t-shirts are made from premium quality cotton, and the fabric undergoes a special moisturising treatment so that the t-shirts feel cooler and absorb body perspiration. I always believe that a piece of clothing tells a story. To me, a high-quality fabric is just as important as the design, however, it should also mean something. When someone thinks of AB Label, I would like it to take people to a different place because everything we do symbolises something. That, to me, is what a fashion designer is today,” says Andrijana.

I ALWAYS BELIEVE THAT A PIECE OF CLOTHING TELLS A STORY.”

LOVE

The day in the life of a wedding planner at Victoria Park. There’s no doubt that wedding planners are some of the hardest working people, especially when each and every client is your number one priority! Each wedding that’s planned is the most memorable day in someone’s life. We sat down with Victoria Park’s Senior Event Planner, Lauren Allen to find out what it’s like behind the scenes. What does a wedding planner do? We plan a couple’s special day from beginning to end, covering all details no matter how small (even making sure Nonna’s cannolis are fresh). I work closely with my couples to develop their ideas and family traditions into one memorable day. Why did you become a wedding planner? I have always been passionate about creating and design and I loved the idea of evolving someone’s Pinterest board of inspiration into the wedding of their dreams. What is the most surprising aspect of your job? Bridezillas do not exist! The movies always portray this image of brides getting so stressed out, however, this is not the case. Has the role changed the way you would plan your own day? I would 100% invest in a stylist and not go down a DIY path. What’s been the biggest last-minute challenge you have had to work with and how did you overcome it? Only a few months ago we had a wedding book two weeks before their wedding date! Within our first meeting, we were able to get everything locked in, and the couple left with a huge weight lifted of their shoulders. 10.36pm

sleeping while you were

By COURTNEY FRANK

Forget the traditional 9-5 grind. For these late-night workers, an after dark roster is just part and parcel of a normal workday. As the sun sets over Brisbane, these are the locals who come to life.

KWAN LEIGH FONG, OWNER, MR MISTA What does a typical night at Mr Mista look like for you? A typical night for me at Mr Mista normally starts around 6.00-6.30pm. It’s a slow start for me because at this time we are still a restaurant. At 10pm is when my night really starts – when the club gets going, that’s the fun part of the business. When 3.00am arrives and it’s closing time, we still have to clean, do the reconciliations, and get the venue ready for the next night. We generally leave around 4.30-5.00am. I will usually get to sleep about 5.45‑6.00am. How does working through the night affect your routine and personal life? If you had of asked this many years ago, I would have said it completely stuffed my routine but now I’m used to the hours and my body adapts a whole lot better. As for my personal life, that’s still a tough one. I have two young princesses that I don’t get to spend as much quality time with on the weekends because of work. Hospitality is a tough industry if you have kids because when they are on holidays, it’s generally the busiest time in hospitality. One thing you should never say to a nightclub owner... That you know the owner when you are actually talking to the owner! Tell us about your most memorable or crazy night at work... There has been so many crazy nights in my career in hospitality from hosting Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, NWA and even Stevie Wonder. But the most memorable night was 5th December 2018, when we opened the doors to Mr Mista. 32

2.33am DANIEL TRENT, CLINICAL NURSE, ADULT INTENSIVE CARE SERVICE, THE PRINCE CHARLES HOSPITAL What does a typical night in the ICU look like for you? A typical night varies depending on my role for that night, and this can change from shift to shift. Generally, I receive handover from the previous shift and then perform duties depending on the particular role I am rostered to do. When I have a patient, I introduce myself, see if they need anything, then go over any tasks that may be outstanding. Performing my safety checks is also a priority – so I check alarms, emergency equipment, that sort of thing. I then carry out my assessment of the patient and prioritise their care based on my findings. Regardless of which role I do for the night,

it becomes a balancing act of trying to allow patients to sleep, but also keeping a close eye on them and providing the necessary care, as well dealing with anything unexpected that occurs! What is a common misconception about working nights? That patients sleep all night and not much happens! Almost everything that happens during the day can (and sometimes does) happen at night, too. Without all the additional staff during the day, there is an extra vigilance required after hours. It is certainly not downtime. The most rewarding thing about your job? Two things for me. One is about my colleagues and being able to help them learn and do well. The other is finishing a shift feeling that the patient you spent all that time caring for is improving, or seeing a patient pull through and get discharged to the ward after a long stay. And sometimes seeing that person out in the community years later (whether they remember you or not) knowing they might not be around if not for their stay with us.

3.47am

Why did you become a baker? Being a baker requires many technical skills, but also good physical resistance. To create bread, you need to be aware of all the elements that may affect the dough, such as humidity, temperature, etc. It’s a living thing and can change daily. I enjoy this challenge, along with the physicality of the work.

TRIFIDE BELKACEMI, 2IC BAKER, CRUST & CO.

What does a typical night at Crust & Co. look like for you? I arrive at 11.50pm, get changed and have a coffee. I’m ready to start at midnight and we work through until 8.00am. Every day is different, there’s no routine, however there is a general process for the night. Our breads are slow fermentation and made on sourdough – time is an essential ingredient and steps occur over several days to make a loaf. What are your hacks for when you’re tired and need to carry on? A nice, big breakfast after work – with bread of course! Managing my sleeping times is crucial to staying healthy and being able to maintain a night shift trade. Plus, I stay fit with a one hour CrossFit class every day if possible, and I avoid coffee during the day so that I can sleep well. SEPTEMBER 2020

F E AT U R E S T O R Y

4.50am MADDISON NUNN, FIRE COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER, QFES How did you get your start at QFES? I got my start at QFES when my Dad, a Station Officer on Brisbane’s northside, heard Firecom (Fire Communications Centres) were recruiting. I’ve grown up around the fire service, with both my dad and grandad spending most of their working lives as fireys. I love the clarity my job gives me and the problem-solving skills I have to use on a daily basis, so I knew this was the right place for me from the very start. What is your favourite part about Brisbane after dark? I’ve always loved Brisbane’s city lights and how they reflect on the river. We have a feed of traffic cameras on one of our big screens in Firecom, and one of the views overlooks the Story Bridge,

ELVIS SOIZA, CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIP MANAGER, GPT GROUP

some of Kangaroo Point, and the Eagle Street waterfront precinct. It’s so beautiful to see at night, and then to watch it all change in the morning when the city wakes up and the City Cats start running. Your most memorable night shift? I was still very fresh to the job when a supercell rolled over Brisbane in November 2014, and I can honestly say it’s still the busiest night I’ve ever worked in Firecom. We walked in for a night shift right as severe weather conditions were being declared, and I don’t think things really calmed down until around midnight. From memory there would have been in excess of 600 incidents created in our system during that 14-hour night shift, and over 1,000 calls for help to the SES.

5.18am How did you first get your start as a hotel concierge? My father used to be a Head Concierge at a prestigious 5-star hotel in Park Lane, London. I followed his footsteps at the ripe age of 16 became a Page Boy at the Sheraton Park Towers in Knightsbridge, London, then at 17 became a trainee concierge at the Mandarin Oriental (formerly known as The Hyde Park Hotel) in Knightsbridge, London. Over the years I became the youngest Head Concierge in London at the age of 21 – which was unheard of back then! Eventually, I migrated to Australia and worked at the Stamford Plaza Brisbane, and eventually ended up at The Sofitel Brisbane. So, to summarise, I have spent a grand total of 45 years in hospitality and customer experience!

What would a typical night shift look like for you? Working nights is not for everyone – you are working when everyone else is either having fun or tucked away in bed! My shift back then was a 12-hour day – I started at 8:00pm and finished at 8:00am. My night started by meeting and greeting guests, delivering bags or parcels to guests’ rooms, etc. This went on until approximately midnight, then every hour, on the hour, I had to do a security check of the building. In between, I would deliver food/drinks to rooms, deliver the daily newspapers, clean any shoes that someone had left outside their room etc. Then, in the morning between 6:00am and 8:00am I’d finish off by welcoming guests again and helping with the breakfast service. What is your favourite part about Brisbane after dark? The best time for me was the stillness of dawn when the sun started to rise. I would always make sure that I stood outside to experience it!

How did you get your start as a florist? I always appreciated gardens and working with my hands. Having already been a hairdresser for seven years, there were a few transferable skills under my belt when I made the move into floristry. I learnt from the best creatives in Brisbane and Sydney, giving me the confidence to eventually go out on my own. What does a typical early morning at work look like for you? Going to bed early doesn’t work for me so when I wake at 3.30am I’m (temporarily) not thrilled! I live on the Gold Coast, so I need to leave super to arrive in time for the Rocklea Flower Market opening at 5am. The day improves from that moment! What are your hacks for when you’re tired and need to carry on? A jump in the ocean or a sing-along to some danceable 90s jams. The most rewarding thing about your job? Knowing I’ve nailed a floral brief and seeing clients respond accordingly.

5.59am MIRIAM PALMER, OWNER, WILDPLAY FLORA

2014 was the aim of the game, but it turned out 2016 was more his tune. For Sami Afuni, it’s been one feat after the other. From two X Factor experiences, living in Kuwait and taking inspiration from Toronto’s music scene, Sami’s been grinding in the dark, but it’s all about to be put on full beam. We’re here for it and you will be too if you read on.

IF YOU DON’T MIND

What was the inspo behind your latest track, ‘If You Don’t Mind’? I started playing with the idea of ‘If You Don’t Mind’ back in 2017 after someone told me to pretty much sell out my culture and moralities for a bit of hype. I take pride in the fact that I’m of Middle Eastern and North African descent, that I’ve lived overseas, that I’m Australian born and obviously a citizen – it makes me who I am. Everything that happened in my life made me who I am today, so I will never sell out on that. I think people often make decisions for shortterm success, even if it’s at the expense of their own moral compass, rather than looking at the long term and sticking to what brought them to where they are, and that’s what inspired the track. It explains my journey, morality and ethics that I’ve showed along the way.

“EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED IN MY LIFE MADE ME WHO I AM TODAY, SO I WILL NEVER SELL OUT ON THAT.”

Favourite line from the track? “Even when I got down I was up to something.” It reminds me that even on bad days, or when things aren’t going right, I need to stay focused, productive and zoned in. The ‘down’ is also in reference to me returning to Australia at 14 – I was up to something, on to my next move.

This creative is showing – not telling – how it’s done.

Describe your sound… It constantly evolves. I don’t like to limit myself to a certain genre, but what I truly love to create is vibey music. Almost like car or elevator type music in a sense.

The SPRITZ you MISSED The little slice of Italy at Howard Smith Wharves is welcoming you back to its riverside eatery – Ciao Papi.

If your fork has missed the feel of rigatoni smothered with slow braised pork ragu or spaghetti entangled in garlic-soaked prawn and chilli, then we bring you much anticipated news: Brisbane’s Casanova for Italian food lovers has opened its doors once again! You know Ciao Papi as the place that turns the New Farm end of Howard Smith Wharves into Positano on any given night, with signature Italian dishes seasoned by spectacular views of the Story Bridge and city skyline. Opening for dinner Thursday evenings and lunch and dinner Friday to Sunday (including Aperitivo from 4-6pm on Thursday to Sunday), this time round, Head Chef Giacomo Favotto – whose previous kitchens include Michelinstarred restaurants like Le Gavroche in London, L’Andana in Italy and Ryu Gin Restaurant in Tokyo – will also be slinging a new range of woodfired Napoli and crispy thin pizzas with San Daniele prosciutto, chilli-laden Moreton Bay bug or local mushrooms in taleggio cheese. “As always, I’ll be keeping it simple and relaxed at Ciao Papi,” says Giacomo. “Some of the best food you can eat is also the simplest!” CIAO PAPI HOWARD SMITH WHARVES 5 BOUNDARY ST, BRISBANE CITY P 3188 9090 CIAOPAPI.COM.AU

Superb

SUBS

It’s the perfect catch up spot except for one thing – it may be hard to chat when the food is this good!

A

simply perfect sandwich really does come down to the formula. From the filling combinations to the right ratio of sauce to bread, the method is key in adding extra to the ordinary. It also helps when the meats are roasted on site, cheeses are hand sliced, sauces are homemade and the bread is baked fresh every day, and that’s exactly why DannyBoys have superstar sandwiches down pat. Brisbane’s favourite subs actually began whilst sailing in the Mediterranean Ocean. Founder and Director Daniel McKennariey was working as a private chef on super yachts and private estates when

DannyBoys was born. “My original plan was to open a restaurant back in Australia,” Daniel says. “However, my vision shifted after travelling through the USA and seeing the deli sandwich shops spotted all over town, particularly in my wife’s hometown of St Louis, Missouri. I was also fuelled by my passion to make the simple sandwich the best it could be.” The menu began with the ‘Hero’, which is still one of their most popular sandwiches. Free range chicken breast, mozzarella, red onion and DannyBoys homemade ranch dressing and buffalo sauce lies between their signature, baked-in-store, preservative and sugar free bread for this crowd favourite. From there, the menu expanded to include peppered pastrami, Italian salami and sliced turkey breast, as well as

four homemade soups that have remained on the menu since day one, including the insanely loved broccoli cheddar. “I was told I was crazy for doing soups in sunny Queensland,” Daniel says. “Now we sell over 400L every week at our Kelvin Grove location alone.” ‘Rockstar sandwiches’ is no empty label, with the guys behind one of the biggest selling apps, Fruit Ninja, inventing DannyBoys’ popular ‘Halfbrick’ sandwich, and star-studded regulars visiting when they’re in town. And now the doughy love can be felt even further, with the opening of their Brendale store. SCinjectables

How did SCinjectables begin? After working in one of the big chain clinics, my focus shifted to how I wanted my patients to feel. I wanted to spend more time learning their concerns and earning their trust. This can’t be done in a 15-minute window. So, I took the leap and started my own clinic, offering ample time for the consultation to make sure every patient is truly being listened to with treatments tailored to them.

Meet Su-en Chow: an absolute boss solo practitioner, who knows the importance of attentive care and empowering women to feel their best. Get ready to achieve impressive yet natural results at her Morningside clinic. What treatments can be found at SCinjectables? For the past six years, I’ve focussed on anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers that help you be the best version of you! Now, I’m super excited to introduce a new treatment called matrix PDO threads. This is absolutely wonderful for skin tightening, improving fine lines, and volumising the face and neck, by stimulating the production of collagen to create a firming effect for 6-12 months.

What do you love most about what you do? I adore helping people feel better about the way they look! There is no “in and out” mentality in my business, and I truly believe this is the key to achieving great results. Learning the tools of the trade is one thing, but being able to really listen to your patient’s concerns before tailoring a treatment plan that achieves the best results gives me an irreplaceable sense of accomplishment. Place Bulimba – Carla Haddan While it’s no secret that Place dominates the Bulimba market, it’s their experts at the helm who make all the difference. We spoke to 17 year veteran Lead Agent Carla Haddan about what it takes to top the industry.

I’VE RAISED NEARLY $1 MILLION FOR QUEENSLAND CHARITIES.”

Let’s go back to where it all started, why did you join the real estate industry? After 10 years as a wholesale fashion agent for designers like Zimmermann, Charlie Brown and Nat-Sui shoes, I wanted to merge my love of real estate and design, while being rewarded for hard work. Fittingly, my best friend’s partner, Damian Hackett, owned a progressive real estate business called Place. Career highlights? Winning the REIQ Community Individual Award 2020 and receiving the Place Value Award in 20182019. When you have so much goodness in your life, you have to give back and I want to lead by example for my son, which is why I’ve raised nearly $1 million for Queensland charities. I established SEPTEMBER 2020

the Helen Hackett Foundation in memory of my best friend and with her husband, we raised over $550k for two digital mammography units at the Wesley Breast Clinic. In 2013, I was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma and created the annual luncheon, Big Mumma’s Italian Feast for Mummy’s Wish, raising over $300k. What makes a great real estate agent? Great relationships built upon trust, which leads to a great referal business. I’m proud to have won the Rate My Agent Bulimba award twice as Bulimba’s most recommended agent. Many of my clients have become great friends of mine – handling their biggest asset is a responsibility I don’t take lightly! Hoarder house revival Once a run-down and tired Queenslander in need of some tender loving care, the well-known ‘hoarder house’ in Coorparoo has had a seriously envious make over. Style Journalist Jasmine Rolfe spoke to the visionary behind the transformation. The Queenslander home really is a trademark of our city. A Sunday afternoon drive through Brisbane will find streets lined with these beauties. But as much as they’re characteristic of the sunshine state, some have seen better days. Luckily for this Coorparoo ‘hoarder house’, Bellevue Queensland property developer and builder, Julian Zullo, saw the potential, and now the Marian Street mini-mansion has pride of place. Hi Julian! Could you kindly introduce yourself to our readers? Hi all! My name is Julian Zullo. I was born in Brisbane and love to travel. I studied a construction management degree at RMIT (Melbourne) and QUT (Brisbane) and have a huge passion for design and anything architectural. 52

Tell us a bit about your company, Bellevue Queensland…. Bellevue was founded 33 years ago by my father who now has taken a back seat. I personally have been running the company now for six years. We enjoy building anything from highly dilapidated Queenslanders and high-end childcare centres, to 10-story highrise buildings. What was it about the Marian Street property in Coorparoo that caught your eye? I have always lived in Coorparoo and drove past the house every day to work. On the day of the auction, I noticed several people outside STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

@STYLEMAGAZINES

FEATURED ON OUR FRONT COVER! the house (around 50 people) so I stopped to check it out. It just so happened that there was not one bidder. I had no idea I was about to purchase it when it happened. The house was in the worst possible state. 20 truckloads of rubbish, 100 trees, and a substantial amount of time and money needed to bring it back to life. I saw past all of that and took it on as a passion project. Why do you think the Marian Street home has received so much interest in the press? I honestly believe people love the transformation of Queenslanders. The new homes these days seem to have all the latest tech and cool functions, but often lack character and a real homely feel. The moment you step inside the house it has great warmth.

Before renovation

Do you have a checklist when selecting a property to develop? Yes, definitely! Location is number one. The saying ‘Worst

house on the best street’ definitely comes to mind. For Marian, it ticked all the boxes. Great street with awesome views, close to highly-regarded schools and, to top it off, has a park on the next street. Your #1 piece of advice for an aspiring developer… If you look hard enough for a site, the right one will present itself. Try not to buy the first thing that pops up, take your time, do your research, and make sure you are committing to the right site. Remember, location is everything. There have been many projects where I fell in love but after a bit of research, the bottom line just didn’t stack up. What’s your favourite part about Brisbane? I love everything about this city! The weather, the people, the cafés, the culture! And the best part is that we have the north and south coast at our fingertips. FOR MORE TRANSFORMATION INSPIRATION VISIT STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU.

Dogs, decoded. A perfectly behaved pooch is always possible with the help of these dedicated dog experts. By BETHAN WARRIOR

Y

ou may have noticed an increase of furry friends across your screen recently and it’s not by coincidence. Time in isolation has seen dog adoptions skyrocket, with many people viewing it as the perfect time to welcome that darling doggo you’ve been dreaming about into your family. As any dog lover will tell you, there really is no limit to the boundless joy and unconditional love that dogs can

KELLY MCCLELLAND

bring you. However, there is no denying that there is a lot of hard work involved in owning a dog, much of which is often underestimated prior to bringing them home. As such, many in the industry are fearful that the rise in adoptions will also see a spike in dogs re-entering shelters as restrictions ease and a somewhat normal life resumes. To help address this issue, we chatted with Kelly McClelland, a dog behaviour therapist and trainer from Bark Busters to tap into the wisdom that over 14 years of working with dogs has gifted her. Both Kelly and Bark Busters believe there is an extremely slim minority of bad behaviours in dogs that cannot be addressed, with rehabilitation always a possibility. Bark Busters was founded out of frustration with the number of dogs being surrendered to shelters because of issues that could be corrected with the right technique and time. As such, their therapists are highly trained to address a variety of issues with a practical, personal service and a lifetime guarantee. Their techniques are founded in calmness and kindness to animals, backed by years of research and animal psychology. Beauty blueprint

Luminous skin for life sounds like a far-fetched wish, but the dedication of Richard Parker – the founder of the revolutionary skincare brand RATIONALE – will grant it. With the opening of their new flagship James Street space this September, we spoke to him about how it can become a reality for you. What inspired RATIONALE? As a teenager, I was referred to a dermatologist and I was fascinated by his vast knowledge. He encouraged me to explore the speciality. I believed I could make a difference in the wellness and luxury fields of skin health and beauty through the formulation side of skincare. I studied cosmetic chemistry and developed the six pillars of skin radiance that became known as the RATIONALE Essential Six – Resilience, Vitality, Brilliance, Integrity, Clarity and Renewal.

What does luminosity mean to you? For years I’ve said luminous skin is your calling card; your presentation to the world. It both shapes and expresses your inner confidence. Glowing, healthy skin makes us beautiful at any age. I believe radiant skin is your reward for preventing and reversing environmental damage What is the RATIONALE process? I believe the most important first step toward luminous skin for life is a comprehensive skincare

consultation. We customise a treatment plan for skin success that includes both your daily at-home skincare ritual and professional facial treatments, performed within our flagship spaces. The relationship between a client and a RATIONALE consultant is lifelong, based on a deep knowledge of your skin’s changing needs throughout life. RATIONALE RATIONALE.COM

Body talk Let’s discuss breast augmentation, with Dr Matthew Peters from Valley Plastic Surgery. There are many women of all ages and backgrounds who seek augmentation for differing, personal reasons. Whatever your reason is for undergoing the procedure, we spoke to Dr Matthew Peters to help you navigate your first consultation with your plastic surgeon. 62

|

What are the main reasons for clients wanting a breast augmentation? Some are wanting to restore volume and shape following breastfeeding or weight loss, maintaining as natural a look as possible. Others are happy with their shape but want more volume to achieve a more proportionate size that suits the rest of their body shape. Could you explain ‘CC’ size and why it matters? ‘CC’ is a measure of volume. It is the product of width, height and projection measurements that we take into account when determining the look and shape requirements the patient desires. How long does it take to achieve your desired results? It takes six weeks for 90% of the swelling to settle and to achieve a firm idea of how things will look in the long run. Patients routinely report it takes up to nine months, though, before everything completely settles in terms of shape and movement. STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

@STYLEMAGAZINES

How can this procedure drastically change lives? Restoration of shape following breastfeeding or massive weight loss, congenital asymmetries and developmental irregularities as well as reconstruction following breast cancer surgery or trauma. Everyone has a genuine need and thankfully we have techniques available that can address these, usually in a manner that improves our patients’ quality of life. How can Valley Plastic Surgery help? All of our surgeons are FRACS Specialist Plastic Surgeons that have undergone specific training in breast surgery. We offer a comprehensive, non-judgemental, confidential, professional and personal surgical consultation, experienced operative planning and techniques, and followup procedures and protocols that aim to ensure an outcome that both us and our patients are happy with. Shaping the future

With a bright outlook of high standard innovation and less invasive procedures, the team at Valley Plastic Surgery discuss what the future of plastic surgery and dermatology looks like.

DR RAYMOND GOH Specialist Plastic Surgeon Director, Valley Plastic Surgery I think the two words which will shape plastic surgery in the near future are “subtlety” and “regenerative”. People are not wishing to be noticed after having plastic surgery. They want to change an area of their face or body that bothers them for themselves, not for the rest of the world to see. They want to feel more confident, in order to reach their full potential in life. We have to throw out the concepts of an ideal nose, an ideal breast, or a perfect body. The other exciting area of plastic surgery involves utilising patients’ own tissue for the purpose of enhancement and regeneration. This includes using patients’ own fat for breast and body work, and the use of concentrated growth factors and platelet rich plasma (derived from patients’ own blood) for facial and skin work.

DR MATTHEW PETERS

DR KATE DEAMBROSIS

Specialist Plastic Surgeon

Dermatologist

Director, Valley Plastic Surgery In the short term, I expect to see the continued refinement of procedures and techniques that we are currently offering. Body contouring makes up a large percentage of my current clientele, and I see this moving towards a more 360-degree approach. There have also been some exciting advancements in fat transfer techniques, making this a more viable option for many patients. Ultimately, artificial intelligence will have an increasing role to play in the future of plastic surgery, with potential for assisted assessment and operative planning. There have also been developments in custom-made growth factor laden implant scaffolds that the body takes over. While this is exciting, there are some things that cannot be replaced by a scalpel held by a skilled human hand.

DR ALYS SAYLOR Specialist Plastic Surgeon I’m looking forward to a future of innovation in science and surgery, and especially advances that provide less invasion when patients seek to restore or improve form and function. I’m very hopeful these advances can comfortably co-exist without people sacrificing mental, emotional or physical health to achieve optimal health.

Our skin is a billboard to the outside world. Every spot, every wrinkle and every scar tells a story, and history to date shows we are keen to erase, camouflage and inject to modify our stories where we can. I see the future of dermatology soaring, with artificial intelligence already here. With machines like the VectraVB360 used in public hospitals in Brisbane, they’re able to take 360-degree views of the whole body to identify all skin lesions on a patient. I see these machines better able to discriminate between benign and malignant, avoiding the need for a skin biopsy by a simple flash of the robot camera. I see 3D printers also in our future dermatology world. Skin will be perfectly matched, fully functional, and without the need for surgery, needles or discomfort.

Chin

up

Who would’ve thought a chiselled jawline only takes 10-15 minutes!

We’ve all been there: the camera flashes on a candid look that seemed perfect in your head, but one look at the shot (and your double chin), and that picture goes straight to the Instagram graveyard. The solution? If you’re a less-ismore kind of person, then removing a double chin is easy with help from the passionate expert team at Cosmétique. Fat dissolving injections are a highly effective way to remove fat under the chin without the need for surgery. The simple yet innovative treatment works by breaking down the membrane of fat cells, which are then absorbed by the body and progressively eliminated by the kidneys. As fat cells are a hard thing to replace, the overall number of your fat cells will decrease, thus providing a permanent result. Not only can you say goodbye to your chin’s twin, but the skilled injectors at Cosmétique can help redefine your jawline and slim out the area. Sport support If you’re always on your feet, you may need a leg up over this common issue. Athletic people frequently present with varicose veins, as the increased load on the venous system during intense physical activity can damage the vein walls. The Leg Vein Doctor sees many patients who’ve deferred treatment for too long, to avoid interfering with their sporting schedule. The longer the delay, the higher the risk of microcellular damage around the lower leg. Endovenous Laser Ablation or Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy are walk-in/walk out, non-invasive treatments. They are clinic-based procedures which don’t require hospitalisation and are easy to schedule into a busy life. Downtime is negligible, with no need for hospitals or general 64

anaesthetic. You’re literally back on your feet for a 30-minute walk immediately after the procedure and you can drive home. Using upper body weights can continue following treatment, as can low impact exercise. Short intensity running and cycling can recommence within a fortnight, as long as you’re cautious and remain alert to your body. At the initial consultation, you’ll be provided with a treatment plan, valid for 12 months. Our reception team will happily work with you to find appointment dates that fit around your training schedule and events. P CE Internationally recognised and multiple award-winning Australian hairdresser, Justin Pace of Co and Pace Salons, opens up about his impressive career and admirable reputation within the Brisbane hair scene. Your portfolio and accolades are very impressive, what’s your secret? Determination and hard work sounds cliché, but I believe you must find the drive to keep going somewhere. To push through the tough times you also have to rework known weaknesses. I never consider myself to be number one or at the top because if I did, there’d be no room to grow. What’s your definition of great hair? Great hair should be shiny, healthy, wearable, and easy-to-maintain. It should also appear the same between salon visits (unless changing looks). Great hair is about customising the right hairstyle to the presented personality, aesthetic and lifestyle. What experience can people expect at a Co and Pace Salons appointment? Upon walking into an aesthetically pleasing environment, clients can expect to be greeted with a friendly smile, then sat down with a hot towel to refresh. Alongside custom-made biscuits, clients can select from a menu of hot, cold, or alcoholic beverages. For those who love to read, there’s a variety of up-to-date magazines, for others who need to work, there’s high-speed WiFi. SEPTEMBER 2020

Working with hair is similar to configuring a puzzle, as you have to align a client’s wants and needs with their hair type and look. There’s nothing more satisfying than seeing a client walk out with a massive smile on their face and confidence in their demeanour. Expertise and excellence

In your genes

When I went to university, I wanted a career and life that I could be happy with, be proud of and excel at. I learnt that there was no research to support the idea that excelling in anything is a consequence of possessing innate gifts, and there would be periods of failure before achieving success. No one is born to greatness. Those who develop expertise or excellence have one thing in common: deliberate practice tailored to the task and individual preferences. We know that successful people consider where their performance is currently; identify goals that stretch beyond their current ability; engage in exercises designed to reach new milestones; integrate ongoing feedback on their effort and outcomes and continually refine over time. So, if you’re open to improving, just start!

Do varicose veins run in families? Unfortunately, yes. If one parent has varicose veins, your risk increases. If both parents are affected, the risk jumps to 90%. Quick lesson: arteries carry blood from your heart to your body. Your veins carry ‘used’ blood back to the heart. When veins have trouble returning blood, it can pool in the leg veins. This is called venous insufficiency and symptoms include aching, swollen or itchy legs, nocturnal cramps, restless leg syndrome, eczema, brown staining or skin hardening. If you have a family history of venous disease, we recommend visiting a phlebologist. At our clinic, all initial consultations include an ultrasound investigation. A GP referral is recommended, but not required. THE LEG VEIN DOCTOR 465 MILTON RD, AUCHENFLOWER P 3720 9912 THELEGVEINDOCTOR.COM

Homegrown getaway

With international travel off the cards (and probably will be for some time), there’s no better time to appreciate our own backyard. Sure, we’re exploring this with local holidays, but it’s time to also focus our attention on local designers and labels. The number of high-quality Brisbane designers per capita is quite astonishing. One of my favourite events of the year is MercedesBenz Fashion Festival, which usually showcases these labels, but alas, not in 2020. Luckily with Laura Churchill at the helm of Brisbane Fashion Month, which runs for the entire month of October, Brisbane will have premier fashion events to attend. I am personally looking forward to showing our new season women’s suiting collection.

isabella & roman longginou Creativity must grow on the family tree, because this brother and sister duo are flourishing with it. While one wields a sewing needle and the other a charcoal set, they both create beautiful pieces in the world of fashion and art. @ILONGGINOU @ROMANLON G G I NOU

ISABELLA LONGGINOU

Designer dressmaker and founder of Isabella Longginou

What was the catalyst to your career? I actually had no background in the fashion world at all – I wanted to be a stylist before any of the dressmaking came about. I thought studying fashion design would lead me down the “styling” path, but it turned out the sewing, pattern making and designing came quite easy to me. I think these skills were passed down from my nonna and mum, who actually inspired my brand.

Describe the Isabella Longginou woman… Someone who isn’t afraid to wear multiple frills, colour and have fun. They definitely don’t want to be wearing the same as anyone else. That’s the beauty of having something custom made – 68

|

the dress design can be the same, but you can mix up the fabric, lengths and fit to make it yours.

How did you develop your creative style? I believe my creative style comes from my mum – she is so chic and works with me in the studio. However, it’s mostly from trial and error. It’s a lot of playing around with design ideas, dress samples and then deciding what fabric looks cool with what design.

Who is your style icon? Dolce & Gabbana and Valentino – they’re a little bit of fun and a little bit chic.

What do you love about Brisbane style? Whether it’s their lipstick colour, shoe or accessory, Brisbane girls aren’t scared to take risks.

STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

@STYLEMAGAZINES

SHOT AT OVOLO THE VALLEY

Where are you the happiest? Definitely in my studio! It’s my creative cave and happy place. If I’m feeling a little down, I’ll go straight to the studio, blast a bit of Marvin Gaye and create something new.

What’s in store for the Isabella Longginou brand? 2020 has been a tricky one. Despite the ups and downs, I’ve been able to design my own fabrics this year (keep an eye out for them) but I’m also super excited for my online store and growing that side of the business!

CRUSH

ROMAN LONGGINOU Visual artist

Describe your work in three words… Black and white

What do you love about drawing? There’s something quite beautiful or even romantic about the immediacy of drawing. Every mark that’s made on the paper has a kind of permanence about it. One thing that’s always brought me back to charcoal is the depth of black, and range of tonality that you can achieve through the medium.

Have you always been ‘arty’? I was that kid at school who drew all over any paper in front of me. It was like a natural compulsion – a need to fill an empty space with pictures of some kind. Studying art definitely helped me figure out how to turn those ideas into something bigger.

What inspires you? I really love looking through archival pictures of historic items, museum catalogues, and antiques. I’ve recently become fascinated with archaeology and sartorial Instagram accounts, too. I also love looking through magazines, advertisements, and basically any kind of visual media. Besides that, I try to see as much artwork as I can and read quite a bit – mostly the classics and some theology.

What’s your favourite piece from your latest collection? A drawing I’ll be showing in November titled ‘Illusions of Grandeur’. It’s a three-panel picture of crumpled aluminium, a suit of armour and a car headlight laid against each other. This set the formula I followed for the rest of the works in the show.

Soundtrack to sketch to? I’m really big on jazz. I’ve got this 25-hour long playlist of mellow jazz tracks that I always come back to. Otherwise, if it isn’t jazz, it’ll be a podcast or two.

Any exciting projects coming up? I have my first solo exhibition in Sydney with Jerico Contemporary. This will be held in November. After that, I’ve had a few opportunities to do photographic works, so I’m pretty excited to see where that leads.

My corner of the

WORLD

It’s the great travel debate of South East Queensland – who reigns supreme? The Sunshine Coast or the Gold Coast? Courtney Frank chatted with two respective locals who each make a compelling case for their beloved beachside home. SUNSHINE COAST JAHARN GILES @MISTERWEEKENDER Tell us what you love most about life on the Sunshine Coast: What I love most about life on the Sunshine Coast is that it’s laid-back and unpretentious. I live at Sunrise Beach, which is a beautiful beach at the northern end of the Sunshine Coast, right next to Sunshine Beach and Noosa National Park. I am so lucky to live within walking distance of the beach and we can see the ocean from our home. I’m also madly in love with Noosa National Park and I hike the trails there a few times a week. The food scene here is outstanding – we have some of the most incredible restaurants and cafes, and the local produce is undeniably some of the best in Australia. How would you describe your coastal community? The locals are so friendly, everyone knows each other, and everyone says hello. It’s a nice, community-driven feeling. Life by the ocean is very relaxing and we all know we live in a special place where people can pay thousands of dollars for a holiday. Everyone supports local business and often you’ll find that we don’t like telling everyone how much we love it up here because we want to keep it all to ourselves! I love it when we go to the beach because Jason (my husband) will always swap surf notes with other locals. That has never happened to him on the Gold Coast.

HIDDEN GEMS: Fave brekky spot: Vanilla Food at Noosa Junction.

Why should people visit the Sunshine Coast over the Gold Coast? This is easy, we never have traffic. From Noosa to Eumundi and down to Coolum, there are only two traffic lights. There are less crowds and not thousands of cars and hotels or multiple roads running parallel to the beach. Our coastline is untouched by dominating high-rise hotels and apartment buildings, so we don’t have to worry about the beaches being drenched in shade in the early afternoon when the sun starts to set. What I love is that the Sunshine Coast has not been taken over by social media personalities or celebrities. We are the quieter, littler sister of the Gold Coast and not one single local will ever complain about that.

Planning a beach day, where do you go? Alexandria Bay in Noosa National Park, Little Cove just up from Hastings St, or Sunshine Beach next to the cliff. Hinterland spot you love: Maleny for a road trip on a rainy day. For something a little closer to home, we love Cooroy, Mary Valley, Kenilworth and Conondale. Fave local boutique: Hello Trader.

@JOHNNY.MELON

T R AV E L

GOLD COAST ELIZA LANDGREN @ELLE_FIT Why did you decide to call the Gold Coast home: I have always wanted to be by the ocean. I grew up in Cairns where nature is a bit of a tease (crocodiles, jellyfish, no surf), so I wanted to live somewhere I could actually enjoy it and be in it. I spent a few years on the Sunshine Coast but was always drawn to the southern end of the Gold Coast. Palm Beach is home for me now and there’s nowhere I’d rather be. How would you describe your coastal community? I think a lot of people assume the Gold Coast is a tourist destination, but each beach has their own little community. Palm Beach feels like a small town. There are plenty of cafés, restaurants and options for exercise, so I’m always running into friends without having to organise a catch up. I love that aspect of it. I’ve never experienced a community like this before – all of my friends live within 10 minutes of each other. At the moment we head to Pilates in the morning and then catch up with whoever happens to be at our local coffee shop, Watson Bloom. 99% of the people I know here have moved here as adults. It’s a choice we have all made, as opposed to growing up here. It’s a pretty incredible spot to call home. You’re planning a day out with friends – what are you doing and where are you going? On Saturday mornings we catch up at the Palm Beach markets and have a MIO “buckie” wrap – it’s my favourite meal of the week. We usually spend a fair bit of time here chatting, listening to live music, and grabbing food for the week. Depending on the weather, we might have a beach day and surf either before or after the markets. There are great paths along the coast so going for a ride and grabbing a coffee or açaí bowl is on high rotation during the warmer months. Lately we have been having margarita nights at home with the Mr Consistent cocktail mixers – highly recommend! Everything is cruisy and spontaneous down here, so we don’t plan much. I live across the road from the beach so catching up for the sunset is always magical.

LOCAL LOVES: Fave brekky spot: Barefoot Barista in Palm Beach. Planning a beach day, where do you go? Across the road from my house in Palm Beach or to a point for a surf – either Burleigh or Currumbin. Hidden hinterland spot you love: Cougal Cascades in Currumbin Valley. Best view on the coast: The lookout at the top of Burleigh Hill.
