enai Grace knew from a young age that she wanted to work in the arts. She always dreamed of becoming an art teacher, but after a trip to Rome, in high school, Renai’s goals slightly shifted. She fell in love with Italy and its rich history and culture and went on to study Art History at The University of Queensland, before scoring an amazing internship at Peggy Guggenheim Collection – one of Italy’s most famous modern art museums, in Venice. However, Renai’s career really kicked off after she landed a job at Cintra Gallery on Park Road in Milton in the mid-90s. Fast forward to 2022 and this Brissy local now heads up the Museum of Brisbane (MoB) after being appointed Director and CEO in November 2016.

“It has been a highlight of my career working alongside some of Brisbane’s creative greats,” she says. “It’s a great city to hatch a project, ideas are welcomed, and people are keen to share and collaborate.”

When asked about her favourite project to date, Renai replies, “there have been so many! If I had to choose it would be Mao’s Last Dancer the Exhibition: A Portrait of Li Cunxin, Dylan Mooney’s Blak Superheroes and World of Wonder: Margot McKinney.”

LALASTUDIOHAIR HAIR SALON

“There is a fine line between work-life balance in the arts,” she says. “It can be all consuming as it doesn’t stop when you leave the office. In saying that, though, my favourite pastime is planning holidays around art exhibitions and biennales!”

HOT IN THE CITY

By POLLYANNA GARDNER

It goes without saying that we love this city year-round but come September, our affections really reach new heights. With the distinctive hum of spring in the air, nothing feels better than getting out amongst it and sweating our way into the new season. So, without further ado, we present our favourite ways to get active while the sun shines when it comes to everything mind, body, and soul.

@RIVERLIFEBRISBANE

FEATURE STORY

Farm to table Maybe it’s just us, but nothing makes us feel more like we’re living the dream than grabbing our baskets and heading down to the markets on the weekend. From flowers and fancy heirloom tomatoes to traditionally made salumi and olives, live music, freshly squeezed juice, and happy dogs everywhere — it’s sensory bliss. And, while a trip to the market may be a (literal) walk in the park, it’s the endorphins and vitamin D you get that will really kickstart your day (not to mention, your metabolism). The best bit? Whether you live in West End, Manly, Rocklea, or the city, there’s a market to bliss-out in near you.

RIVERLIFE.COM.AU

Perhaps the best way to see the city, the river loop is like a running (or riding) best-of Brisbane highlights tour. Jump on or off at your leisure for a short stroll, a serious run or even your morning commute – there are plenty of access points dotted throughout the city and its surrounding riverside suburbs. From a 1km jaunt to a 10km sweat, the options are endless and all aesthetically inspiring with sights including the Story Bridge, the Botanic Gardens and Gallery of Modern Art. Our favourite route? Jumping on the track after work at Eagle Street Pier and riding straight into happy hour at Howard Smith Wharves. Go bush Immerse yourself in nature just 15 minutes out from the CBD at Mt Coot-Tha. The popular tourist destination is often overlooked by locals, but the walking trails are some of the best in town and offer a quiet reprieve (bird sounds aside) from the hustle and bustle of city living. With options ranging from just a 15-minute wander to a two-hour hike, it’s guaranteed to get your heart pumping.

@FLUIDFORM_ASCOT Glow from head to toe An active city at heart, there are so many things around to help get you out of a winter funk. From 45 minutes in the hot seat at a City Cave infrared sauna, to a soulful stretch class at Yoga Bones, a Daily Detox juice at Quench, free Tai Chi classes at Southbank (starting back up in October – yay!) and even a faux-glow from the tanning experts at Lush New Farm, there’s something to inspire a glorious and active new season for everyone. Our tip? Take time to smell the newly bloomed blossoms and slow down when you get a chance. After all, outer radiance starts with inner wellbeing.

Through a loop

Fluid(form) We can’t be the first to claim that Pilates ‘changed our lives’ and we certainly won’t be the last, but things really took a turn (for the best) when we tried Fluidform. Warm, supportive, and encouraging –Kirsten King’s much-loved method takes the stress and pretence out of exercise class. No matter your experience level or your preferred class style, Fluidform Ascot offers classes for all (yes, even bubs) in mat and reformer Pilates, and you can even try out Kourtney Kardashian's favourite, the Cadillac.

Paddle upstream Want to try something different for your weekend workout? Hop aboard a kayak and get up close and personal with the city’s most loved landmark, the Brisbane River. Paddle beneath the Story Bridge and past the iconic Brisbane sign on a dreamy tour of our sprawling river with Riverlife. You’ll be briefed, geared up, and guided on an adventure that’s so beautiful, the calorie burning is just a bonus.

PLEASURE

Alongside artist and designer Gerwyn Davies, The Calile Hotel recently welcomed a few curious guests.

By DINUSHKA GUNASEKARA

Gerwyn’s entourage of vibrant characters “embody the sun-drunk resplendence that being cocooned inside the hotel arouses.” From the flashy bellhop to the so-clean-he-sparkles bathroom guest, the misfits of The Calile speak to the experience of the acclaimed escape.

FEATURE STORY G

| 19SEPTEMBER 2022 “It is an interesting paradox – The Calile has become somewhere that you want to be seen in... somewhat relaxing and disappearing, so the figures are kind of doing the same thing.

TO SEE BEHIND-THE-SCENES IMAGES, HEAD TO STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU GERWYNDAVIES.COMJANMURPHYGALLERY.COM.AU uests of The Calile Hotel a couple of months ago may have seen an eccentric figure dashing around the chic floors in a whirl of synthetic gold and inflated splendour. A figment of the imagination? A ghost of the Valley’s past? Nope, it was Gerwyn Davies, and he doesn’t pack light. Granted unprecedented access as an artist-inresidence to this James Street institution, Gerwyn brought to life the renowned destination’s playful decadence in his signature costumes, captured in a photographic series called Pleasure.

The ‘Pleasure’ exhibition will be on public display on level one at The Calile Hotel from September 15 to October 4.

The camp series doesn’t just celebrate the hotel’s modernism and feel-good vibes – it also honours The Calile’s unrivalled standard of service whether you’re latex-clad or not. “When I was shooting in one of the rooms, I had all the lights off and then housekeeping arrived. It was such an unusual moment – like it looked really dodgy – but they were so lovely!”

“It was very much a work trip – I was given my own room as well as an adjacent room for the costumes,” Gerwyn said. “I wanted to steer away from cliches of the hotel and the well-worn images we see on Instagram. I made costumes that would respond to the spaces; I wanted to speak to the architecture in some way and push against it in others.”

The figures invite attention because of the costumes, but at the same time you can never actually see who is inside them. I think that reflects the way people experience the hotel –it’s a natural fit,” Gerwyn said.

f clothing is an expression of the life you want to lead, then drape me in Matteau for the rest of my days. A portmanteau of ‘matt’ (not shiny), and ‘eau’ – the French word for water, Matteau, founded by sisters Peta Heinsen and Ilona Hamer, captures the zeitgeist of a time bound by simplicity, escapism, and comfort: a forever sense of permanent vacation for the discerning woman.

FASHION LABELS, MATTEAU.

Though their line of minimalist, classic swimwear is the bedrock that propelled the duo into the fashion world in 2015 (now with a flagship store in Noosa), it has been their ability to capture the aspirational fashion genre of casual minimalism resort wear – a distinct aesthetic favoured by modern antipodean fashion – that puts them at the forefront of design on home soil as well as across the globe. And of course, it is all veryFromdeliberate.billowy sleeved blouses to slouchy, relaxed-style paper bag trousers in natural fibres, textures, and tones, their latest collection, Edition 2, 2022 could be their best work yet. The perfect compilation of everyday wear pieces that offer the wearer a sense of ease, comfort, and practicality while still upholding a definitive style, no matter where you find yourself. A line that reflects the people’s state of mind: the want and need for escapism. A wardrobe to take on holiday and then wear when you get home to cling onto what you have left of it. With an attitude that collections aren’t to be bound by the seasons, this latest pool of sartorial threads are a Kokomo mirage Matteau-ified: an idyllic vacation where everyone floats through the days in a blurry haze – rosy-cheeked, happy, and blissfully carefree. Chatting to the duo, it is clear their work is spurred by a single and simple vocation: to offer styles that will last a lifetime, and anyone who’s ever worn a Matteau piece would be hard pressed to argue otherwise… Edition 2, 2022 will be available online via matteau-store.com and in store from October.

Founder and director Jess Cheetham and her husband Andrew, always had a passion for poolside, sea view, and even backyard margs – but no one bar or restaurant compared to their homemade concoction of booze and sunshine.

Yes,

In January 2020, the couple had yet another average margarita and Jess raised the idea of a mobile margarita bar. “It might have been tequila-induced, but we decided it was a good idea and then I found and purchased ‘Stanley’ our first truck within two days,” Jess says.

The 1972 vintage commer highway van was the first step towards margs made mobile, and after a whole lot of hard work (and a side of tequila), Margarita Margarita was born. Life is simply too short to drink boring margaritas, so if you’re planning your next big event, need to stock up your bar fridge with mixers, or simply want to taste the magic, then look no further than Margarita Margarita. This mobile dispensary is here to make you feel like you’re on a vacation. We’ll take a margarita, please! argarita fanatics and tequila lovers rejoice because it’s officially citrus season and if one thing is for sure, nothing pairs better with margaritas than a margarita bar… better yet, a mobile one! Say hello to Brisbane’s very own mobile dispensary, a.k.a Margarita Margarita.

“A good margarita should be a pleasure to drink – you shouldn’t have to fight to swallow it or feel a burn down the back of your throat. Our margs have a lemon (not lime) base, so they are smooth and very easy to drink,” Jess says.

Your artwork has become synonymous with thread. What first drew you to using this material? I used thread because it was easily available. I had a dream where I was inside a painting, and I wanted to recreate this feeling by drawing around me in the room. So, wool was the most obvious solution. I do not have any interest in its cultural connotation or consider myself a textile artist. For me, my material is just like oil paint was for Picasso, a tool that has no meaning itself. What drew you to performance and installation?

A THROUGH THE THREAD

From childhood tales to broken history scenes, wandering in and out of QAGOMA’s latest exhibition, ‘The Soul Trembles’, feels not just like a look into Chiharu Shiota’s mind, but her heart and all that she has seen, felt, and experienced with it.

When visiting the exhibition, what do you hope people are able to take away? I hope they will take away a lot of questions. People often are awed when they enter my installations and have many questions about the process. I hope they also ask: why did she do it? And what do I see and feel? They do not need to understand or see my intentions, but I am hoping that they will think about their memories, soul, and life. I hope people come to the museum to see new and unseen things, to have experiences that differ from everyday life and by doing so experience themselves in a new light.

You visited Uluru in the 1990s. Can you tell us a bit about this experience, and how it influenced your new piece, ‘A question of perspective’? My stay in Australia was my first time outside of Japan and I was eager to see “the world”. I visited many places and among them I went to the top of Uluru. I had never seen this much space. The vastness of the desert struck me and the fact that you can see the curvature of the earth. I remembered this feeling when QAGOMA commissioned the work.

“WHEN I WAS IN AUSTRALIA, I WAS FREE TO BE WHO I AM WHEN I AM NOT THE DAUGHTER, FRIEND, SISTER, AND PAINTER THAT I WAS IN JAPAN.”

When you are in crisis with your medium, you’re easily drawn to the most primal medium you have – your body. The artistic struggle is practical. You try something and it either has meaning to you, or it doesn’t. Later someone calls it performance or installation. I am not following installation art to see what other people are doing. I have found a way to express myself that works for me and to compare and categorise is something that art historians or the market can do.

At Wil Valor, whilst we can easily create classic and more traditional pieces, that doesn’t really excite me on a runway. Recently, we closed the Brisbane Fashion Festival and showcasing at an event like that is about pushing the creative boundaries, inspiring the audience’s imagination, and testing one’s ability. This collection is about releasing creative energy, exuberancedisplaying(defined as the quality of being full of energy, excitement, and cheerfulness; ebullience), hence the collection’s name, Whimsical for.–foroursilkcollectionStandoutsExuberance.intheincludebombers,shirtdresses,aswellasfunkysuitsandjacketsbothmenandwomenwhichwe’rebest-knownAnotherstandoutpiece that hit the runway included an off-white silk/ wool suit for men with Swarovski crystals which was paired with olive Wil Valor bejewelled hi-tops. Our sleeveless cape jacket from Italian silk was also another favourite. To view these pieces, visit our showroom or contact us for a private viewing.

As a marketer, I live and breathe content creation. TikTok is one of the fastest-growing social media platforms around and has the potential to unlock many opportunities for your brand if used correctly. From being seen by your target audience and generating conversations with them, to creating an active online community that will support your brand, the benefits of this ever-growing video app can be monumental. With 8.7 million Aussie users spending an average of one hour and 19 minutes daily on the app, the ‘content is king’ adage is seemingly true for this entertainment platform. And would you believe that users aged 35+ are the fastest growing audience?Ifdigitalmarketing is a priority for your brand, here’s why you should jump on the TikTok bandwagon: 1. aximalism, the more is more trend, grandma chic, whatever you want to call it is having a resurgence – and we’re totally here for it!

Gone are the days where clean lines, white walls, and understated grey and tan furniture ruled the world of interior design. These days it’s all about filling our homes with the things we love – whether that’s a green velvet armchair passed down two generations, a colourful rug, or a patterned vase from Europe.

where you can, as well as a tray filled with books, candles, and a potted plant or fern for an extra homey touch. And don’t be afraid to mix colours and patterns together, just be sure it doesn’t get overly cluttered.

“I think there is a [big] difference between thoughtful layering and clutter,” Tina says. “To do it well, it needs to be carefully edited. It requires long-term vision and very considered decision making.”Thinkingabout jumping on the maximalism trend? Why not peek at what’s already lying around at home? So, how do you do it? Well, to get started, Tina’s rule of thumb is that every chair or lounge needs to have either a coffee table or drum stool next to it. She then recommends adding a lamp with a beautiful shade and a cushion to the chair for an added oomph. “All the pieces are comfortable to use and aesthetically pleasing for the people living in the thoughtfully-created space.” She also recommends adding a rug Less is more…no more is more! Here’s how to rock the maximalist decor trend.

“I love that it allows for so much personal expression of yourself, your family, your ancestry, and your hobbies and quirks,” Tina says. “The idea that your home is a very personal space filled with a whole lot of pieces that have so much meaning is so important to me.”

Interior designer Tina Kent of Lady Chatterley’s Affair, an online shop and home decorating service, describes the maximalist décor trend as, “layer on layer on layer on layer, all working beautifully together to create decorative cohesion that is interesting, personal, and very special.”

SEPTEMBER 2022 FELIVAND

Singer, songwriter, and producer… it’s the muso trifecta. Brissy born and raised, FELIVAND, aka Felicity Vanderveen is at the top of our playlists.

I’ve only done karaoke once in my life and I did a duet of Toxic by Britney Spears with one of my best friends. Where do you seek inspiration?

CRUSH

At the beach with friends or with a novel and cup of tea cooped up inside – whichever way it sways is very dependent on the weather. Can’t put down read?

The latest season of Stranger Things. My housemate and I finished it in two days. Best career advice you’ve ever received? I guess the beauty of staying in your own lane and not comparing yourself to others. Quality over quantity, and trusting that your timing and vision is right for you even if it feels wildly different to other people.

WWW.FELIVAND.COM @FELIVAND

My name is FELIVAND, I’m based in Meanjin/Brisbane, Australia and I write alternative/indie music that has been described by my friends as ‘happy sad’. Describe your style?

Song on high rotation? No Good Reason by Omar Apollo. Drink of choice? Southside. Go-to Aussie designer? Katalyst.

I usually end up people watching other drivers in their cars and trying to read their facial expressions. On Sunday you’ll find me…

Comfortable and boxy silhouettes with a sprinkle of chic.

One sentence to introduce yourself?

Albums or projects by artists that feel like they take you into another world. I’m always inspired by peoples ability to do that through art. You never leave home without…

The first thing you did this morning? I was lucky enough to have my dog with me this morning so we had lots of cuddles!

Katalyst ZipOffJeansUnisexFit$350 RiverbendBooks NewAnimal$19.99

Instant pick-me up? The ocean! Everytime. Go-to karaoke song?

New Animal by Ella Baxter or Boy Swallows Universe by Trent Dalton. What are you most proud of?

Maybe my perseverance with my music. Pursuing it after high school and not going to university was a really dif ficult decision for me and especially during Covid, it was so hard to stay hopeful and motivated. For right now I am so happy and grateful that creativity is at the centre of my life. What’s the last thing you binge watched?

As of late, my lip balm. Stuck in traffic, where does your mind wander?

With an abundance of beautiful landscapes and lush farmlands on offer in the Sunshine State, it’s no wonder Queensland is home to some of the most picturesque and tranquil country farms. From berries to blooms, say hay to our favourite farmlands.

You can’t avoid a sunny disposition when visiting this hidden treasure in the Scenic Rim. A popular photoshoot location for couples and families, Kalbar Sunflower Farm has been brightening days since 2006. With beautiful picnic and sip and paint activities available, this is an idyllic day trip the whole family can enjoy. Sunflowers are at their best and brightest through the summer months, but dainty pink and white daisies are about to bloom this month, hitting their stride in October. Be sure to book an appointment for your visit!
