EDITOR’S LETTER

Hello, Stylers! I’m pleased to introduce myself as the new Editor of Style Magazines. Style has been woven into my life since childhood, growing up surrounded by glossy mags and marketing speak thanks to my parents, Tracy Sinclair and Paul Johnston. For more about my journey, check out page 8. Now, I’m honoured to step into this role as my mum, Tracy, passes the torch while she continues to lead our creative agency, Style Media.

After five years in London, returning to a thriving Brisbane is amazing to see! Our city’s dining and entertainment scene has truly levelled up, with sparkling new additions like Queen’s Wharf and The Star featured on page 55.

This year has been a whirlwind of personal and professional milestones. I got engaged, celebrated my 29th birthday, and took on

the role as Editor. It feels like everything is happening all at once! When I’m not at work, you’ll find me either socialising around town or relaxing with my fiancée and our darling Labracollie, Leo.

I’m keen to elevate Style by curating content that genuinely resonates with you, our modern reader. We’re starting strong with FENDI gracing our cover, to spotlight Brisbane’s luxury fashion destination, QueensPlaza, featured on page 12-17. As Brisbane evolves, so do we. Expect fresh fashion and beauty trends, inspiring travel stories, cool interiors, and the latest happenings. We’re bringing you bold stories, new faces, and a touch of the unexpected.

As we head into spring, I’m feeling invigorated and excited for what’s to come. Here’s to the next chapter of Style. I can’t wait to share it with you!

Ah, spring – the season that ushers in, in our opinion, the best time of year. The days grow longer, the sun shines brighter, and the good times get even better. If we squint, we can almost see the summer break! While Brisbane basks in perpetual sunshine, it’s the warmer months when we truly embrace everything our city has to offer – alfresco dining, coastal day trips, and most importantly, sporting our springtime best.

Ready to shed the layers, start refreshing your spring wardrobe, and turn some heads? Where better to go than Brisbane’s iconic shopping nexus, QueensPlaza? With its polished floors and five stories, the centre is a fashionista’s paradise. Home to over fifty specialty stores, including Queensland’s flagship David Jones, QueensPlaza is bursting with style and sophistication.

Let’s take a walk through the centre.

Spring is in full bloom on the Ground floor, where high-end brands have unveiled irresistible new collections. Fendi’s latest lineup could inspire a complete wardrobe overhaul, especially with the divine ensemble gracing our cover this month. Gucci’s new collection also dazzles with feminine, preppy silhouettes, and we’re smitten with their glossy red shoulder bag pictured right – it’s the perfect companion for date nights at our swanky cover shoot location, Naldham House. And this is just the start—Balenciaga, Saint Laurent, Dior, Ferragamo, and more are also boasting exquisite fashion and accessories.

Now, let’s head to Level 1, Brisbane’s hottest hub for luxury, Australian designers.

If there’s one thing us Aussies do best, it’s spring/summer fashion. We’re the pros at dressing for warmer weather, right? And with some of the best beaches, dining, and shopping in Australia just a drive down the M1 away, Aussie labels like Camilla, Rebecca Vallance, and Scanlan Theodore, are the ones to hit up when the Gold Coast is calling your name. PS: For itinerary ideas to complement your fashion finds, turn to page 31.

Plus, beloved David Jones labels like Michael Lo Sordo and Bec + Bridge are the usual suspects for more formal events, and for good reason. Whether it’s drinks by the wharves or an evening at the theatre, these brands have you covered with bold florals, pastel hues, feminine silhouettes, and a nod to the boho resurgence (we’re looking at you, Zimmermann). We’ll take one of everything, please!

So this spring, brighten up your wardrobe at the pinnacle of Brisbane’s fashion scene, QueensPlaza, where luxury, high fashion, and inspiration combine for the ultimate shopping experience.

Look out, big energy incoming!

Kiri Johnston radiates edge and cool girl energy. She’s a 5’2’’, 90’s baby. The epitome of small but mighty. Allow us to introduce our new Editor, who puts the ‘Y’ in Style. Y not? Wildly creative and instinctive. Say hello to Kiri Johnston!

With the last five years spent in London, rubbing elbows with global and e-commerce brands, Kiri is bringing a fresh perspective and no-fear attitude to disrupt, to experiment, and to break boundaries.

“I’m keen to apply my London experience to elevate our brand across print, digital, and social media. There’s so much opportunity ahead, and I’m excited to work creatively with the team,” said Kiri.

Her roots? Planted in Style way, way back. Being part of the brand since her early years – watching her parents, Tracy Sinclair and Paul Johnston build a local magazine into what is now a thriving creative agency with an impressive national client portfolio.

“Style is in her DNA. She sees exactly what our business needs, and how to rally the right people around her; a fresh and inquisitive team who are relentlessly seeking, loving and breathing Brisbane,” said Director, Tracy Sinclair. “Style Media is a multifaceted beast. Kiri brings a perspective that’ll affect change, not just for the mag, but across the entire operation.”

But this isn’t about the apple falling from the tree, this move is far from maintaining the status quo. Instead, we’re ready for transformation with guidance from a talented marketing and networking expert. She’s already focused on identifying the talent and opportunities that will drive Style forward. Her strategy is sharp and clear; connect, align, and elevate.

“I’m approaching everything from a strategic perspective, focusing on bringing the right people and brands together. Business should be about relationships, not transactional” said Kiri, speaking to her marketing and partnership roots.

With Style in her blood, Kiri’s editorship feels like the final piece of a dynamic, re-energised team ready to take on Brisbane and beyond.

What comes next?

You’ll have to wait and see but trust us… you’ll want to be part of it.

OH-SO SCANDI-LOUS

WORDS KATHRYN EDMONDS

No one does street style quite like the Scandinavians and this SS25 was no exception.

Copenhagen Fashion Week has become a hub for innovative high-low dressing, a trend that mixes casual and formal pieces for effortlessly stylish looks. This style is all about combining opposites, like pairing a cosy hoodie with a sharp blazer or a sporty jersey with tailored trousers, creating a polished yet laid-back vibe. SS25 street style in Copenhagen embraced this trend, with crisp white tees styled in unexpected ways, such as layered under sports tanks and paired with structured denim skirts, socks, and chunky sandals. To try high-low dressing, experiment with contrasts by styling casual items with more formal pieces, balancing the elements so neither overpowers the other. Accessories like statement bags or sleek shoes can complete the look. High-low dressing is more than a trend – it’s a versatile way to capture the essence of Scandi street style.

the BOHO REBOOT

Quiet luxury this, Sofia Richie that – it’s time to rewind to the early 2000s, when her iconic older sister, Nicole Richie, was evading paparazzi with a Chloé Paddington bag slung over her arm. The look you’re thinking of? Utterly bohochic. And now, all the fringe, frills, and flares are making a comeback.

Boho has grown up, but it hasn’t lost its carefree spirit. From flowy dresses, sheer blouses, and the revival of those knockout over-theknee boots. The new bohemian look is all about that “I woke up like this” hair, and the classic go-to’s like a crisp white top, blue jeans, and a touch of organic gold.

TIMELESS APPEAL

In a world where trends shift rapidly and fast fashion prevails, finding something with real meaning is refreshing. Enter the signet ring—a piece of history that seamlessly blends tradition, significance, and nostalgia into our modern lives.

The signet ring has been around for thousands of years, once worn by royalty, nobility, and clergy on the pinky finger. It served a practical purpose, pressing a unique mark, like a family crest, into wax to seal important documents. Back then, it was a powerful symbol of identity and authority. Though the need to seal documents has faded, the charm and significance of the signet ring have only grown stronger.

Today, the signet ring has evolved from a symbol of power to a piece of personal significance. It now seals memories, whether celebrating an 18th or 21st birthday, marking a graduation, or creating a special

bond. In a fast-paced world, a timeless piece like the signet ring offers a comforting reminder of what truly matters.

For those looking to embrace tradition with a modern twist, Lannah Dunn Jewellery is the destination. With locations in Toowoomba and Brisbane, they offer delightful pinky rings that bring comfort and nostalgia. Their monogram signet rings are particularly noteworthy for gifting, transforming into wearable memories.

Adding extra charm to their collection is the Lucette Collection, affectionately known as The Twinkle. Inspired by the Victorian Era, this range features star-shaped and celestial-themed pieces, capturing celestial magic and reflecting life’s changing seasons.

In an age of fleeting trends, the signet ring remains enduring—a piece of jewellery that tells a story and connects us to timeless traditions.

Gold Coast Reimagined

IMAGE THE MALIBU RACQUET CLUB

GUIDE TO THE GOLDY

Golden beaches and sparkling blue waterways – that’s the Gold Coast we all know and love. But beyond the beloved shores, there’s a flourishing culinary scene and hidden gems waiting to be explored, showcasing a different side to the coastal oasis. From the hustle and bustle of Surfers Paradise to the laidback ambience of Currumbin, this iconic destination is the perfect playground for those seeking a blend of relaxation and adventure. Plus Style’s Director Tracy Sinclair (a GC local), has added some her fave things to do!

TARTE BEACH HOUSE

INDULGENCE Itinerary One

Day 1: The Lap of Luxury

Kick off your lavish Gold Coast stay at The Langham, Gold Coast or Dorsett Gold Coast, where opulence meets impeccable service. Shop ‘til you drop at Pacific Fair’s luxury lane, featuring Prada, Bulgari, and Celine. In the evening, head down the highway to Etsu Izakaya. Hidden behind the white barn doors is some of the most unique and exquisite Japanese cuisine you’ll ever taste.

Day 2: Rejuvenation and Relaxation

Boost your endorphins with a pilates session at Essentials Studio. After working up a sweat, treat yourself to a refreshing beverage at Holliday Coffee, where you can enjoy one of the Gold Coast’s finest brews and jaffles that will delight your inner child — all served with a warm, local touch. If your muscles are feeling the brunt of the workout, unwind at Soak Bathhouse or Native State to soak in hot mineral baths and enjoy soothing saunas. For dinner, experience The North Room, an intimate spot serving seasonal produce and curated wines.

Day 3: Pampering and Views

Stroll along Broadbeach Esplanade and make your way to to the leafy Bam Bam Bakehouse for some of the best pastries the glitter strip offers. Spend your day at Day Spa by Chuan where you’ll be transported to your happy place. End your luxurious getaway with a sunset dinner at Rick Shores, where the iconic bug roll and bubbles make for a delectable finale.

MUM GETAWAY

Itinerary two

For the mum who craves a touch of luxury: indulge at JW Marriott Gold Coast Resort & Spa, where adventure and relaxation collide. Enjoy riverside treats at Bumbles Cafe, our Director’s fave, explore the chic boutiques that adorn Capri on Via Roma and Sanctuary Cove, and detach from the world with a rejuvenating spa day at Spa by JW.

For the mum seeking serenity: escape to O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat. Enjoy private accommodations with breathtaking views, fresh local dining, artisan shops, and a revitalising experience at the Lost World Day Spa. Unwine at O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyard, as the sun beams over the hinterland.

WHOLESOME STAY

Itinerary three

Start your coastal adventure at The Cheshire Cat or Mysa Motel. Enjoy a scenic stroll around the Burleigh Headland, crossing the bridge over the sparkling Tallebudgera Creek to grab coffee at Neptune Kiosk, and sip under the striped veranda and soak in the stunning views. Relish a meal at Tarte Beach House, explore their market, and rent a stand-up paddleboard from Boat Shed Bait and Tackle. Paddle down Currumbin Creek to Currumbin Alley and watch the surfers carve the waves. Then, get those creative juices flowing at Stone Studio, as you sip and sculpt your own ceramics. End your day at Franc Jrs in Nobby’s Beach, a hidden gem with rave-worthy pizzas. Take your pizza to go and enjoy it on Nobby’s Beach as the sun sets.

Itinerary four

For the ultimate epicurean escape, stay at QT Gold Coast or The Pink Hotel Coolangatta, both offering quirky yet luxe amenities. Begin at Moustache wine bar and Lars Bar and Grill for local produce. For breakfast, enjoy inventive classics at Palm Springs in Burleigh, and explore boutiques like Valley Eyewear Flagship and Sean Scott on James Street. Finish with a blowout at The Studio Upstairs and dine on Mediterranean fare with 220 ocean views at Pipis Restaurant.

TRACY’S HOOD

My fave place for a relaxing dip is The Spit, on the calm side. I’ll ride my pushie there, grabbing a takeaway coffee on the way from Alma at Surfers. After the beach, I’ll pick up fresh oysters from Peter’s Fish Market or prawns from the trawlers on the way home.

Cornerstone at Tugun is a vibe and the boutiques are quality – Kind Curations is a must visit. Bumbles and The Blue House at Budds Beach is another fave. I’ll go purely for the Moreton Bay Bug Roll, sometimes ordering it ‘to go’ and sitting on the beach opposite.

The Burleigh Hill walk to Tallebudgera is popular with locals. It’s an easy walk, and in summer, you can take a dip along the way. It’s hard to go past the Burleigh ‘Bermuda Triangle’ – The Tropic, Rick Shores, and Burleigh Pav for lunch, drinks, or dinner. With their first-class views, they are just sensational – remember to book Rick Shores and The Tropic.

SERENITY BY THE SEA

Picture this: it’s a sun-soaked day on the Gold Coast and you’re strolling through the palm tree-lined oasis that is Sanctuary Cove. On one side, bespoke boutiques and gourmet dining options fill the streets, while on the other, the marina glistens as grand yachts dock in the water. As its name suggests, Sanctuary Cove is a tranquil place – somewhere to slow down, unwind, and leave your worries behind.

Maybe you made the trip from Brisbane, in which case, you’re likely hungry from the drive (which is approximately one hour from the CBD). Fortunately, a variety of mouthwatering eateries are waiting for you to discover. Whether you’re in the mood for a light lunch, a gourmet seafood spread, cocktails and bar snacks, a Mexican feast, or something else entirely, the Marine Village boasts exceptional cafes, restaurants, bakeries,

and bars to choose from, satisfying every craving.

Once you’ve successfully eaten yourself into a food coma, now’s the perfect chance to plan your shopping route. With a range of unique boutiques offering everything from specialty homewares to designer and local fashion labels alike, you’re just as likely to find a thoughtful gift for a loved one as you are a new favourite outfit. Spend the afternoon browsing the shops and exploring curated collections before taking a leisurely walk by the award-winning marina – the picturesque gateway to the Gold Coast Broadwater and the Coomera River. This is also the glamorous setting for the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, an unmissable event that draws tens of thousands each year, showcasing over 600 boats and 1000 marine products.

For those who love the game, the Sanctuary Cove Golf Club features world-class greens and challenging courses. Regarded as one of Australia’s premier golf clubs, a game of golf here far exceeds just a game of golf, feeling much more synonymous with a luxurious retreat. Plus, the Sanctuary Cove Country Club offers an ideal setting for enjoying various other workouts, including yoga, swimming, tennis, and reformer Pilates. With all this on offer, you might find yourself wanting to extend your day trip. Well, InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort provides a fantastic base, with its five-star accommodation and amenities, including lush gardens, stylish suites, and a one-acre lagoon beach pool.

And if a weekend just isn’t enough in this slice of paradise, we get it. With a number of luxury residences available for you to call home, your dream life awaits.

THE SUITE LIFE

While many Gold Coast hotels can claim to be beachside, few can boast prime beachfront status. Enter The Langham, Gold Coast, the first luxury hotel in 30 years to offer direct access to these sandy shores. Perfectly positioned for a seaside stay, the five-star experience delivers uninterrupted views of the coastline on one side and the hinterland on the other, providing visitors with the best of both worlds.

Since its 1865 debut in London, The Langham has become synonymous with timeless elegance and an unmatched hospitality experience. Globally renowned as a prestigious hotel with locations all around the world, each destination is more than just a place to rest your head. With its design inspired by the facets of a gemstone, it’s no exaggeration to say The Langham, Gold Coast shines as one of

the crown jewels of Surfers Paradise.

CHECKED IN, CHECKED OUT

As a busy (read: stressed) mum of three energetic boys, I’m always on the hunt for a quick and stylish weekend escape from the chaos of home life. My kids seem to behave better outside our home, and a change of scenery is just what we need to unwind. Recently, I stumbled upon the perfect spot for a coastal recharge: The Mysa Motel in Palm Beach.

Nestled on the sun-kissed Gold Coast, Palm Beach is a hidden gem often overshadowed by its more developed neighbours. Perhaps it was the ease of securing a table at a restaurant without a month’s wait or the short line for a perfectly brewed coffee, but with its powdery white sand, trendy bars, and laid-back charm, I fell head over heels for this effortlessly cool destination. It’s the ideal spot for families, couples, and friend groups alike. And The Mysa Motel, with its 70s-inspired charm, is the ultimate Palm Beach retreat. Conveniently located near restaurants, cafes, and shops, this stylish abode offers the perfect blend of style and practicality. Upon arrival, I was impressed by the motel’s sleek design, featuring retro-inspired furniture, pastel hues, and terrazzo tiles.

The attention to detail at The Mysa Motel is exceptional. Our room was stocked with goodies like bliss balls, chocolates, and even a matching cap and beer stubby holder that complemented the motel’s aesthetics (and made for some cute IG pics). It wasn’t long before my eldest declared it the best accomodation he’s ever stayed in (and he’s stayed in some impressive places worldwide) —maybe it was the free chocolate that won him over. The spacious rooms, with their chic minimalist design, felt like a luxurious high-end hotel but offered the practical elements of a serviced apartment, which is essential with the tiny terrors in tow.

The Instagram-worthy pool was a highlight, and we spent our days lounging by the water, strolling along the beach, and indulging in delicious eats from nearby cafes. Despite having three loud kids, the motel felt contained enough to keep our noise levels in check. By the end of our three-day stay, we all felt super relaxed, recharged, and sporting some impressive tan lines—the perfect souvenir!

If you’re looking for a low-rise accommodation option with spacious rooms, a great location, and a healthy dose of luxury retro charm, The Mysa Motel is the ultimate choice.

These electric, private picnic boats are easy to drive and can accommodate up to eight people—fur babies included. Gather your friends, pack a picnic, and set sail. For lunch, grab bao buns from Bao Burgers, mezze platters from Manolas Deli Bar Bistro, or sushi from Tokyo Sushi on Capri or The

Sushi Bar for a quick and easy picnic feast. Once you’re back on land and have bid goodbye to your sea legs, why not treat yourself to some TLC? Start with a massage at Pure Peace Massage, then book in for a pampering at one of the local hair and beauty salons. Or if retail therapy is more your style, explore the beautiful boutiques offering a range of fashion and gifts.

As the day winds down, enjoy a waterfront feast at Isla Cantina or Edgewater Dining, where you can wine and dine with a view. For authentic Asian cuisine, Valyn Thai Restaurant and Madam Fu are the perfect spots to end your day on a flavourful note.

MODERN HISTORY

“Importantly there’s an element to the design – with all its boisterous colours and textures and fabrics and confidence – that doesn’t overpower or discount the existing handcrafted features of a bygone day. We urge you, as you walk through the building and back in time, to take a moment to appreciate the ceiling roses, the joists, the stairwell, the windows, the verandahs and patios, the colonnades and pilasters, and my favourite – the green man”

– Andrew Baturo

Naldham House, the latest hospitality venture from DAP & Co., made its debut in July after a nearly decade-long slumber. Boasting a sophisticated European-style brasserie, a sun-kissed alfresco terrace bar, and a swanky late-night cocktail lounge (plus, one more addition still under wraps), the venue draws inspiration from grand hotel lobbies and European brasseries, making it the perfect backdrop for our September cover shoot.

With its rich history spanning over 150 years and the new design perspective courtesy of an impressive collaboration between Anna Spiro Design and DAP & Co., we felt privileged to bring our creative vision to life within its storied walls. Upon arrival at Naldham House, you’ll notice the beautiful contrast between the new versus the old. “We wanted to respect the magnificent architecture of Naldham House but also incorporate some more modern elements to create a fun, bold and welcoming atmosphere,” says Sean Waters, Communications and Marketing Manager at DAP & Co.

The overall vibe is all about the warmth of a classic clubhouse with a cool, neo-traditional twist. Far from stuffy, Naldham House exudes a relaxed, sophisticated ambience that’s perfect for any occasion – celebrations, post-work drinks, casual catch-ups, and date nights.

But it’s not just the space that’s impressive – Naldham House has already earned a five-star reputation for its authentic European brasserie cuisine and top-notch hospitality service. Under the guidance of Executive Chef, Doug, the menu showcases approachable, produce-driven dishes. Standouts include the decadent Pithivier and the Dry-aged Pork Tomahawk. And when it comes to hospitality, Sean says, “Be it from our tendency to restore heritage buildings or reviving the service styles and standards of yesteryear, it is something we are obsessively focused on.”

For generations, Naldham House has been etched in the memories of many, hosting countless weddings, family traditions, and personal milestones. As this beloved landmark enters a new chapter, we’re glad to see its iconic status appreciated and reimagined for the modern era.

Acquaint yourself with Naldham House – 19th century architecture interwoven with modern design aspects.

RENAISSANCE REIMAGINED

Crafted by nature, perfected by artisans. Franca Design celebrates the inherent beauty of stone.

Ever wondered about the history behind your kitchen counter? Likely not, but there’s a world of craftsmanship involved and a whole lot that happens behind the scenes before your counter finds its home with you. From hand-selecting the perfect stone to importing exquisite slabs from across the globe, Franca Design is all about the journey, not the destination.

At Franca Design, a boutique marble and stone atelier, each stone slab is selected with an emphasis on design and architecture. The process is meticulous and unhurried, ensuring that every detail – from block selection and finishing to processing and shipment – is handled with the utmost care. Their dedication to beauty has cemented them as a premier destination for luxury stone.

Constantly travelling to destinations like Carrara, Italy, to select materials that transcend trends, their hands-on approach to sourcing ensures that their commitment to excellence is upheld. With an upcoming visit to the Fabbricotti quarry, home to the coveted stone featured in the latest Celine stores, you can expect even more unique offerings to be available soon. This rare material is only available through one other supplier in Australia, underscoring the exclusivity of Franca Design’s collection.

Their brand ethos embraces a blend of sophistication and creativity, with a reputation for being bold, exceptionally skilled, and inviting. Proudly operating two stunning showrooms, affectionately known as slab rooms, in Brisbane and Northern New South Wales, the team are gearing up for the exciting opening of their new Sunshine Coast slab room this November. Pay them a visit to discover how Franca Design can take your living space to new heights.

We got the low on the art of sculptural furnishings in conversation with Rachel Donath, a globally renowned Australian furniture designer and collector, from Victoria.

Describe the Rachel Donath brand in one sentence A trove of unusual, personality-filled pieces that are timeless in the truest sense of the word. Classics, with artful detail. What sparked your interest in sculptural furniture, and how did you become passionate about this unique intersection of art and design I have always loved interiors, sculpture, art, and architecture. I guess I have found a way to fuse these loves by creating furniture pieces that are sculptural and artful. Can you tell us about a particular piece or artist that inspired you to explore the realm of furniture as art When I try to identify the furniture pieces I am drawn to, there is always a common thread: an element of the unusual, something that makes you stop in your tracks and go ‘wow.’ I wouldn’t say there is a particular artist who has encouraged this way of thinking; it has been more of a journey within myself, trying to understand why my eye is drawn to certain pieces and how I can create pieces with the same heart-thumping appeal. In your opinion, what distinguishes sculptural furniture from “regular” furniture, and how do you navigate the balance between form and function Sculptural furniture pushes the limits from a design perspective. It’s not cookie cutter furniture that you’ll find in every second furniture store. I think people recognise that my pieces are made with a lot of intention; using sculptural references and pushing creative boundaries. I am always trying to push boundaries and develop pieces that serve a purpose (functional) but are also extremely beautiful (sculptural) in and of themselves. How do you think the art world and design world can learn from each other, and what opportunities arise from their intersection I think art can be intimidating to people who don’t understand it or know how to live with it. Furniture design serves a purpose: to create pieces for everyday life. By intersecting art and furniture, we can make art more accessible and better understood as not only something beautiful to look at but also as something that serves a purpose within the home and lifestyle of the person who owns it. What advice would you give to those looking to incorporate sculptural pieces into their homes There is only one piece of advice: never ask someone else’s opinion before buying a piece for your home. Be led by your heart and buy pieces that move you – if a piece really speaks to you, it’s likely you will still love it for many years to come.

TABLE TALK WITH GRACE TITMUS

Brisbane local and creative force, Grace Titmus, @gt_studioco has reinvented what it means to create innovative spaces. With a keen eye for detail and a talent for transforming everyday spaces into extraordinary environments, Grace has become known for her fresh approach to design. Now, just in time for spring, Grace is ready to inspire you with her tips for hosting at home.

01. “Hosting gives you such space for creativity while being something that feels really connective with friends and family. When designing a concept, I would focus on a theme or lean into a trend to keep the look and feel consistent.”

02. “Fabric styling is a huge trend right now, so maybe that’s a concept you build from. I’d recommend ducking into your local Spotlight to pick up a few meters of fabric to play with along the table, rouching and bunching as you go! We’ve also seen chrome take centre stage in recent months — I love a good thrift haul and there are always so many chrome platters or coupes to pick up.”

03. “Ambience is key. I would recommend either going for a signature scent or just lighting a couple of candles. That soft lighting will seriously elevate your setting. Don’t be afraid to explore colour here too — there is so much opportunity to add that extra layer to pair back with your other styling pieces.”

04. “As many of my clients will know, produce styling is something we incorporate time and time again. Having that fresh element can cement a colour story or add a textural layer, injecting life

FEAST LIKE THE GREEKS

While you may not be in Greece like everyone else, with its prime location, stunning interiors, and plate-smashingly good food, Opa is a pretty solid alternative.

Walking into Opa, the ambience is immediately palpable and inviting. With interiors plucked straight out of Santorini, the restaurant is all arches, curves, and purposeful details, with subtle terracotta hues throughout. Here, whether you opt for an outdoor booth promising stellar river views or a seat inside offering a more intimate setting, you’re guaranteed a great vibe and an authentically Greek dining experience.

We settled into our table (which gave us a front-row seat to people watching along the riverfront walkway) and met our lunchtime companions: cocktails named Artemis and Aphrodite. Fruity, sweet, and refreshing, these drinks set the bar high for the rest of the meal.

It’s no secret that Greek culture cherishes community, believing that sharing a meal is good for the soul. A core pillar of the Mediterranean spirit, Opa embraces this belief with open arms. And so, my lunch guest and I decided on an assortment of mezze to share, then sat back, cocktails in hand and sun on our backs. Who needs a holiday when home is this bloody blissful?

First up, our taramasalata arrived, served with a side of warm bread. Opa actually utilises a white fish roe as opposed to the typical orange fish roe, resulting in a creamier texture. This decadent dip is a must-

order for me at every Greek restaurant, and this one certainly did not disappoint.

Next came the halloumi chips topped with pomegranate and mint, which was an instant hit. Now, I’m not usually the biggest halloumi fan, but the sweetness of the pomegranate offset the saltiness of the cheese, creating a vibrant and harmonious flavour profile. Following this were the Garidas–grilled King prawns in a tangy ladolemono sauce. These prawns were so flavourful that I had to stop myself from ordering a second plate, reminding myself there was more food to come.

Then it was time for the heartier mezze: Keftedes (pork and beef meatballs) in a feta mousse, Kritharaki (spanner crab) with orzo pasta, and oh-so tender lamb ribs in a spicy feta dip. Each dish was so mouthwateringly delicious that picking a favourite was nearly impossible, and I began to second-guess the decision to share. But after finishing off our final plate, I was thoroughly satisfied – there was simply no room left for another bite.

All in all, Opa provided the perfect lunchtime escapade, combining great food, a stunning setting, and a warm atmosphere. Will I be back? I’m already planning my next visit.

CHANEL en POINTE

Paris-based Set and Costume Designer Jérôme Kaplan gives us a glimpse behind the stage curtain and into his creative mind ahead of Queensland Ballet’s Coco Chanel: The Life of a Fashion Icon, opening on 4 October.

“At first I was very excited to be asked to do the costumes and set...then terrified. How to pay homage to such an icon?”

What was your creative process for this production Work on the production began at the end of 2020. I started with different mood boards and initial sketches of sets and costumes. There are so many things to say about Chanel’s life – her work, her fashion, her love affairs – that I felt it was better to keep the set simple, just like her style. Coco during the creation of the ballet was like a ghost guiding my hands! Talk me through your inspiration for the set design We drew inspiration from the original bottle of Chanel No. 5 – its simplicity was inspiring; truly timeless. The set in the first act of the ballet is completely off-white with black lines, a nod to the white box of the famous perfume. As we follow Chanel’s story, we witness the death of her true love, Boy Capel, at the end of Act One. The light suddenly transcends into darkness. In stark comparison, we created the set for the second act in black, as a backdrop to the darker times in her life. The staircases play an integral part theatrically. Not only are they an icon of the House of Chanel, for us they also symbolise Chanel’s rise to the top, from her humble beginnings as a seamstress to the launch of a global fashion empire. And for the costumes I didn't replicate Chanel’s designs

but instead created a visual impression of them. This is because haute couture dresses feature well-made finishes and details designed to be seen up close, but a stage costume must have a strong impact that can be seen from the back of the theatre. Chanel’s famous black dress was important historically – it gave women the freedom to break free from the traditional corsets, which were very uncomfortable and impractical. Moreover, ladies needed help to put them on, so only the rich could afford to buy the dresses of that time. Chanel, in contrast, made something very simple that any woman could wear. Her designs were about giving women freedom, especially the freedom to work. Also, Chanel loved to wear men’s clothes. Her fashion was inspired by the men in her life. I took all of this into consideration. Were there any specific pieces from Chanel's collections that inspired the costumes Maybe her famous Breton look with the white pants. She took inspiration from the sailors she saw in Deauville and recreated the look on herself. Chanel was her own muse and tested fashion on herself. If women wear pants so easily now, it's largely because of Chanel .

THE MANE EVENT

Does anyone else feel kind of invincible after a blowout? I know I do. So, chasing that feeling, I visited the team at Sol Hair; hair looking and feeling a bit lacklustre, to say the least. This chic, sustainable salon proudly repurposes and recycles 95% of its waste, so I was happy to indulge in a guiltfree pampering. Walking into the secluded space, the vibrant atmosphere and attentive staff greeted me, and I was promptly seated for a brief consultation. Then, it was off to the basin for a much-anticipated wash of my three-day-old hair. As everyone knows, this

is the highlight of any hair appointment, so I leaned back and enjoyed every second. One wash and blissful scalp massage later, it was back to the chair for a blowout and style. The hairdressers looking after me were sweet and informative – not to mention talented! By the time I was out of the chair, my hair was looking absolutely divine and so shiny (if I do say so myself). Walking out the door with my bouncy new ‘do, I found myself making last-minute plans with my friends – this fabulous hair deserved an outing.
