FROM THE

Talulah

Petite Grand

REMEMBER ALL THE things we wanted to be when we grew up? When we were young, our dreams had no limits. We were brave, bold and naïve enough to believe we had the capacity for it all. Many of us tend to lose sight of our grand plans as we grow up. This season, we need to get those wild dreams back and fall in love with taking risks and pushing boundaries – for the right reasons. Being able to explore my passions through inspiring my team to delve into specific themes has turned up the dial on this issue. In October, we are showcasing fashion-conscious minds and where to be seen this spring racing season, and delving inside the minds of the designers behind Tigerlily and Misha Collection. Plus, the warmer months are not complete without a bikini edit and a fit and fab guide to get the most out of your summer months! This fashion-filled edition has made me think about how the small changes can make a real difference, from a heel shape and the way a collar is worn to the length of jackets and the crop of trousers. Fashion this season is all about pastimes. Branded tees, going bare beneath your blazer, all white everything, clashing prints, polished metal, blush hues and wide stripes – we fall in love with it all as Indooroopilly Shopping Centre reignites our passion for a sun-filled summer.

The Reformation

MATERIAL GIRLS

In this day and age, sustainable clothing is more than just a trend; it’s a necessity. Hannah Doody reveals why we need to rethink how we consume fashion.

FUN FACT: 80 billion garments are produced globally each year. Just imagine the resources this requires. Millions of workers ploughing the soil and picking the cotton; weaving, dyeing; working looms; sewing sequins and buttons on garments in huge factories. Now think about pollution. What’s the first thing that comes to mind? Raw sewage running into waterways? Cars emitting plumes of carbon monoxide? Industrial areas cloaked with smog? What about the clothes you’re wearing? The clothing industry is the second largest polluter in the world, second only to oil. This industry generates 11 million tonnes of waste per year – and that’s just in the United States. Most of this waste is non-biodegradable; it sits in landfill for more than 200 years, releasing harmful gases into the atmosphere and accelerating global warming.

Fashion Revolution

YOU CAN BUY A BIKINI FOR THE SAME PRICE AS A CUP OF COFFEE; IN TOKYO, MEN CAN BUY SUITS FROM A VENDING MACHINE. OUR OBSESSION WITH FAST FASHION IS BORDERING ON DANGEROUS. Over the last 10 years, this process has been further fuelled by the fast fashion trend. Designed to move as quickly as possible from catwalk to store, fast fashion is feeding rampant consumerism by churning out huge amounts of clothing usually worn a few times before being thrown away. And most of us don’t think twice when we do it. 14

OCTOBER16

Tamara DiMattina, founder of Buy Nothing New Month, firmly believes that fast fashion and ethics are incompatible. “What is ethical about us, in wealthy countries, paying bugger-all for a new spangly top every week that will soon go to landfill?” Tamara asks. “Meanwhile, our neighbours in developing countries slave, in mostly terrible working conditions, to produce more and more stuff, that we do not need, to feed our never‑ending hunger.” Our obsession with fast fashion is bordering on dangerous. These days, you can buy a bikini for the same price as a cup of coffee; in Tokyo, men can buy suits from a vending machine. But how do you produce clothes ethically, sustainably and in a way that generates economic growth? It was this question that inspired Yael Aflalo to create a new label: The Reformation. During the 10 years she spent working on her first label, Ya-Ya, Yael became aware of some of the harmful industry practices in which she had been engaging. “Overprinting logbooks and tossing out 80 per cent of them – yards of leftover fabric being thrown out,” Yael recalls.

From electricity 100 per cent powered by wind to composting and recycled coat hangers, sustainability is at The Reformation’s core. Yael even created RefScale, which tracks the carbon footprint of each garment by adding up the pounds of carbon dioxide emitted, gallons of water used and tonnes of waste generated.

The Reformation

The Reformation

constraints,” says Yael. “The question is when. When will industry leaders respond proactively? Or will they wait until it’s a matter of compliance?” If, like me, you’re tired of waiting for the world to do something about climate change or waste management, there’s good news: we can take matters into our own hands and make a small difference. Before you buy that 10-pack of undies, think about what went into making them. Or maybe that old shirt could go to another home before you throw it away? Tamara’s advice is simple: “Buy less; buy better. Be thoughtful, and have fun with it. Fashion shouldn’t be destructive, selfish and wasteful. It should be beautiful, considered and enjoyed.”

HOW CAN YOU DO YOUR BIT ? GOOD ON YOU APP

“At the time, there weren’t many other brands who were making sustainable clothes that I would actually want to wear,” Yael says. “So I created The Reformation to fill this void at this intersection of design and sustainability.” The Reformation sources sustainable fabrics and vintage garments while incorporating more thoughtful practices throughout the supply chain. stylemagazines.com.au

Melbourne organisation The Social Studio is another force leading the change. It all started in 2009 when a group of community members and local designers came together with the idea to use fashion as a vehicle for social change. Their goal was to create opportunities for migrants and refugees while also producing a range of ethically mindful garments. Suzan Dlouhy, a teacher at The Social Studio, says their small organisation is proof that size doesn’t matter when it comes to improving practices within the industry. “[The Social Studio] takes a diverse approach that considers the many varied ways [businesses can] contribute to sustainability,” Suzan says. But if a collective shift in global attitude is needed, how do we go about creating this? Is it up to businesses or consumers to spark this change? Suzan says it’s about educating people and generating awareness of the damage we are unwittingly creating; meanwhile, Yael says it’s inevitable that the industry will change, and it’s up to corporations to set an example. “The industry will have to change given resource constraints and other environmental and social

This ethical shopping app was created by Ethical Consumers Australia, a charity registered with the Australian Charities and Not-forprofits Commission. It shows you the ethical ratings for more than 1200 brands based on how they treat their workers, the environment and animals.

BUY NOTHING NEW MONTH This October, try buying nothing new (with the exception of food, hygiene products and medicine, of course). Take this one month off and think, “Do I really need it? And if I do, can I get it second-hand, borrow it or rent it? Are there alternatives?”

OP SHOPPING Buying preloved items is a great way to prevent useful products from ending up in landfill. And a trip to the op shop will most likely cost you a fraction of the price of buying new.

JUST ADD WATER Tigerlily Creative Director Amelia Mather explains a typical day in her life as a swimwear designer, writes Hannah Doody. What have you learnt through your 10 years of working in the fashion industry? Ooh, lots! I’ve learnt that I’m where I belong, surrounded by the right people who share my bikini obsession, love for the beach and constant need to fill up one’s passport at every opportunity. What do you love most about your job? I love the variety; from day to day and week to week it’s always different. Working on four collections at a time, each at different stages, you are never bored. And I love it when new samples arrive!

Where do you seek inspiration for your designs? Almost anywhere, really. It could be a single textile piece that influences a collection or even someone historically we find really interesting. We also travel and constantly source antique fabrics and clothing – and not just because we love hoarding them in our archives! It keeps our design journeys evolving season after season. What are the emerging swimwear trends for the new season? We are loving classic and feminine one-pieces at the moment. With regards to bikinis, I tend to wear them as a bra – and it seems as if I’m not the only one! Bikinis that can be worn under clothes have been gaining momentum these past few seasons.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AMELIA MATHER: Before work: I do yoga or go for a run – either Bronte to Bondi or Centennial Park. 9am: With coffee in hand (from Bourke Street Bakery, I’m in the office between 7.30 and 9am. 11am: Fittings, retail meetings, fabric appointments... lots of decisions to make! Lunch: Usually involves avocado and Sonoma bread or a trip to Bread & Circus for the egg sandwich box. Yum! 2pm: Catch up with the textiles team and head of merchandise to go through

new print strike-offs, pick colours and fabric approvals. More decisions to make. 4pm: Marketing meeting followed by some writing for our newsletter and blog, whether it’s introducing a new collection or a lifestyle story we want to share. Evening: Head home to Surry Hills and make my last decision of the day (hopefully!): either walk up the road to eat my absolute favourite pizza from Vacanza Pizzeria or cook dinner with my husband – usually Teresa Cutter’s Fish in a Bag.

EVENT SEASON SURVIVAL GUIDE

Not only will a balanced meal combat the cocktails, you may just avoid the post-kebab guilt come tomorrow.

As we enter a season exploding with events, planning ahead is essential, writes Sophie Catsoulis. FOR MANY OF us, a looming late night awakens the little old lady inside. The idea of spending hours upon hours on our feet, drinking, mingling and dancing... well, it doesn’t sound terrible, but if you’re not one of the party-fit few, a late bedtime can often come as a shock to the system. Spring, is of course, synonymous with Saturday night soirees and Sundays spent at the races. So before you head out, ensure that your body is booze-proof and ready to go.

20

Before you go: Be sure to sleep soundly the night before your big event – that means no late-night Netflix! A lack of sleep results in a not-so-amicable attitude, not to mention a flurry of unflattering photos that even filters can’t fix. One word: hydrate. Keep your skin and your stomach happy with a load of liquid. But don’t forget to eat! Not only will a balanced meal combat the cocktails, you may just avoid the post-kebab guilt come tomorrow.

While you’re out: Despite our undying love for a glass of Pinot or two, try to sip on something water-based – one vodka lime soda, please! As sexy as those new stilettos looked at 6pm, save yourself the crippling pain and swap them out for a sneaky pair of fold-up flats. When you get home: Ward off the dreaded hangover with a Panadol and a Berocca and snuggle into your sheets eye-mask clad to savour those few precious winks before sunrise.

SEASIDE STYLE:

BEACH TO BRISBANE Unfortunately, waking up to the sound of the surf isn’t a luxury that many of us can afford. But that doesn’t mean we can’t pretend, writes Sophie Catsoulis.

Adairs

THE OCEAN HAS an inexplicably soothing effect on the soul. The salty air, the rolling waves and the cool blue hues create an unparalleled ambience. But only a lucky few reside solely by the sea. Those of us who live and work in the city must resort to coastal styling in order to breathe life into the confines of our concrete jungle. Design elements such as colour, texture and natural light combine to create the ultimate oceanic aura, if curated carefully. As always, in the world of interior decorating, a colour scheme is an essential foundation. Treat your space like an artist would their canvas, establishing a neutral base comprised of cream, white and sandy beige. The addition of select water-like blue and green tones succeeds in both breaking up the

achromatic aesthetic and inspiring an atmosphere of tropical tranquillity. Fill the room with furniture derived from washed wicker, rattan and driftwood. When it comes to décor, think Hamptons meets Mediterranean. Opt for shabby chic styles topped with small statement pieces such as pillows and throws. Seashells and coral aside, succulents are the ideal way to introduce an element of nature. Blur the boundaries between inside and out with vibrant indoor plants. Let’s not forget light – it’s the simplest secret to create true beach house style. Open up your windows and embrace the summer sunlight and refreshing breeze. With just a few simple adjustments, you can bring the beach home with you this summer.

STEP INTO SPRING Homemaker The Valley stylist Morgan Braithwaite discusses this season’s emerging home trends. THERE’S NOTHING BETTER than giving your home a seasonal makeover. With spring fast approaching, stylist Morgan Braithwaite reveals how to inject this season’s trends into your space. What are this season’s home must-haves? Small touches of luxury, from marble accents to gold and metallic details in objects. Include beautiful and unique vases into vignettes – look at clustering different sizes, shapes, colours and materials. Include small bunches of exotic flowers in a few vases to bring a fresh, bright spring feeling into your home. Bring in the scent of spring with jasmine or gardenia in beautiful, oversized scented candles.

What trends will emerge this spring? Embrace neutrals with textured materials in the home. Include a mixture of different materials such as woven linen, soft cotton, tan leather and jute. Raffia will be a huge trend this spring and summer, along with rattan and woven furniture. Are there any rules you follow when it comes to spring styling? Start by replacing all your winter layers with spring and summer weight materials. Replace your woollen throw with a beautiful relaxed linen throw or cushions. Use this time to update your sofa with layers of soft textiles and bright patterns. Invest in pure linen bedding – this is everywhere at the moment and comes in natural colours and earthy tones.

Any tips for people looking to “spring clean” and bring new life into their home this season? Reorganise and restyle your interiors – use this time to not necessarily cull, but reorganise and cluster items. Replace side tables with indoor pot plants and make space for display vases. The very beginning of spring is the best time to start incorporating indoor plants to give them time to establish before summer arrives. INK REMIX

WHEN: SEPTEMBER 16 2016 TO FEBRUARY 19 2017

A new exhibition is putting a modern spin on traditional ink art. WHAT DO YOU think of when you hear the words “traditional Chinese ink art”? Maybe dragons, peonies or dreamy, mountainous landscapes? A new exhibition at the Museum of Brisbane is challenging everything you ever thought about traditional ink art and reinventing it to create something new and unexpected. Ink Remix: Contemporary Art from Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong features 35 contemporary works by 14 emerging and established artists in the region, who use a range of media, from textiles to film and animation. Developing over a period of two and a half years, the exhibit features works which address fresh themes relating to history, religion, body and gender, and the effects of modernisation and globalisation on their societies and cultures, as well as internationally. Curator Dr Sophie McIntyre says, despite the name, the exhibit is not all about ancient Chinese

landscapes. In fact, ink art has been constantly evolving since the 6th Century. “The emphasis is more on the ‘remix’ than the ‘ink’,” says Dr Sophie. “While the artists refer to the ink tradition, it’s more in a philosophical context. In fact, most of the artists consciously reject the medium and the associated tools such as the brush to reinterpret and create a new language that draws on history.” Originally from Brisbane herself, Dr Sophie says

the exhibit will benefit Brisbane in many ways. “One of the main objectives for the exhibit was to increase Chinese literacy in Brisbane and this is achievable at the Museum of Brisbane due to its diverse audience,” says Dr Sophie. “The sheer diversity and contemporary, fresh nature of the works will be a nice surprise for many people,” she adds. DOING IT RIGHT Pocket rocket Tkay Maidza proves she’s one to watch, writes Emma Duffy. YOU CERTAINLY COULDN’T accuse Tkay Maidza of being shy. Ever since bursting onto the Australian hip hop scene with her infectious single Brontosaurus, the 20-year-old’s swagger and fiery nature has seen Tkay carve out a name for herself as the hottest new music superstar in Australia. Born in Zimbabwe and based in Adelaide, Tkay originally studied architecture before becoming a full-time muso. Since then, her career has exploded. A creative force to be reckoned with, Tkay’s bouncy tracks and her featured singles with the likes of Troye Sivan, Motez and Martin Solveig have been hits on the Australian urban charts. Her complex lyrics and versatility as both an emcee and vocalist have made Tkay a commanding force in stylemagazines.com.au

both the Australian and international music scenes. And if her latest single is anything to go by, Tkay will only go from strength to strength. Carry On, the lead single from her highly-anticipated debut album, fires off a whiplash delivery and sets the pace for the record. After a year of national and international tours, the artist is returning home to celebrate the release of her eponymous debut album, Tkay. A string of headline shows across New Zealand and Australia will kick off celebrations. With an impressive schedule of seemingly never-ending music festivals, headline tours, highprofile collaborations and killer singles, this pint-sized performer’s profile is skyrocketing. Tkay will be released as a CD and digital download on October 28.

ICE, ICE, BABY Seasons change but caffeine addictions don’t! Here’s where to get an ice-cold fix, writes Hannah Doody.

YUM YUM!

COLD-PRESSED COFFEE: WOLFF COFFEE ROASTERS The master roasters are now offering cold-pressed coffee! Cold-brewed at four degrees for 40 hours, infused with nitrogen under high pressure and chilled in a keg, this brew is served as a draught pour on tap with a foamy head like a Guinness. It has an incredibly rich taste and is almost velvety due to the slight effervescence.

COFFEE POPSICLES: QUEEN OF POPS Need a kick on a stick? Peter and Penny Wolff’s Queen of Pops is serving caffeinated popsicles! They replicate a barista cup experience, with each pop containing a double ristretto of specialty coffee. The pops can be made on a blend or single origin beans, and for the chocolate lovers, there is a “hot choc pop” made on Trinitario cacao – yum!

ICED COFFEE: CAMPOS Serving up some of the best quality coffee in Brisbane, it’s no surprise that Campos Coffee in Fortitude Valley is also home to some great chilled choices. This popular café boasts delicious iced lattes, coffees, mochas and long blacks.

VIETNAMESE ICED COFFEE: CAFÉ Ô-MAI Café Ô-Maí is one of the few Brisbane cafés serving up this deliciously sweet (and addictive) caffeine hit, and boy do they do it well! Treat yourself to traditional Vietnamese coffee slow‑dripped onto condensed milk and poured over ice.

Incorporate scarves into your outfits!

TIE IT UP Say goodbye to those chokers because scarves are making a comeback, writes Paige Booth. WHEN SHE’S NOT blogging about personal style, Alexander “Lex” Dieck is designing, planning or digitally printing more gorgeous scarves for her brand, Lexicon of Style. Lex can trace her love of silk scarves back to a European holiday when she was a teenager. During that trip, she enthusiastically saved up her pocket money to buy a Missoni silk scarf. “I immediately styled it on my head and wore it around Paris for the rest of the day. Although I had a love for styling scarves before this purchase, this was when my obsession truly started,” she says. But the addiction had only just begun. Lex later learned computer-aided design at college and launched her blog, Lexicon of Style.

Corona bandana $60

Her design process begins by bringing together pieces of jewellery to form a pattern on Photoshop. The design is then printed on different materials such as silk, and Lex adds the scarves to her everyday wardrobe, which is featured on her blog. So how do you style the perfect scarf? Lex’s advice is to tie a scarf around the handle of your bag for a personalised touch; they also work wonders if you need to add a splash of colour to a monochrome outfit. For a ’90s feel, Lex folds up a scarf to become a bandana, which sits nicely over a pinafore dress and can be paired with small circular sunglasses for a nostalgic feel. You can view and purchase Lex’s designs online. LEXICONOFSTYLE.CO

DIY HERB GARDEN If you’ve ever wanted homegrown herbs that need barely any upkeep, read on to find out how to create your own herb garden, writes Amber Lowther. BUYING HERBS AT the supermarket can be a bit pricey and sometimes they’re not as fresh as they should be. There’s no doubt that fresh herbs smell heavenly and it’s even better when you’ve grown them yourself. If you don’t necessarily have the space to create an outdoor garden, then this stepby-step guide will make sure you don’t miss out! You’ll need: • Mason Jars • Seed packets for your chosen herbs • Charcoal • Stones • Soil • Labels

Step 1. Place stones at the bottom of each mason jar until covered and add one layer of charcoal. This will help to create drainage inside the jar, assist with pH in the soil and prevent bacteria from building up. Step 2. Fill each jar 3/4 of the way with soil, leaving just enough room for the seeds and an extra layer of soil to cover the seeds. Step 3. Add seeds to each jar and label the jars as you go. Cover with another layer of soil, ensuring

you’re not planting the seeds too deep. This is because they’ll need sun and water to grow. Add just enough water to cover the seeds and dampen the soil. Step 4. Display your mason jar herb garden on your windowsill, or in a place that provides a healthy amount of sunlight. Step 5. Water them every day and watch them grow! Allow approximately one month before you start using the herbs.

THE SKY’S THE LIMIT One Brisbane-based charity is leading the world in hygiene solutions for the homeless, writes Erin Leckie. WHAT STARTED AS a seemingly crazy idea from two Brisbane besties has now become a service vital to the improvement of the lives and hygiene of Australia’s homeless. Essentially a laundromat on wheels, Orange Sky Laundry allows people in need to wash and dry their clothes for free. The social enterprise founders, Lucas Patchett and Nic Marchesi, were looking for a tangible way to help people when they came up with the concept of a mobile laundry back in 2014. Lucas says the pair quickly realised they had stumbled across a world first. “[Orange Sky Laundry] was an idea that connected community and reduced transmission of diseases, but most importantly improved the lives of others,” he says. “We had a van with two washing machines inside it and the first time we took it out we actually 32

broke both of the machines,” Lucas admits. “But we brought it back, fixed it up, refined it and kept growing it to where it is today.” Now with a fleet of 10 bright orange vans across Australia, the team behind Orange Sky Laundry has done more than 200,000 kilograms of free laundry. Lucas says that equates to 45,000 hours of positive and genuine conversation between everyday volunteers and the homeless. “The washing is great but what we’re really there for is connecting community and creating engagement,” says Lucas. “We pride ourselves on giving each person the same respect and the same time of day. We’re really passionate about engaging with people and treating them how we would want to be treated.” Not content with changing lives on a daily basis, Nic and Lucas have now partnered with

Nic Marchesi and Lucas Patchett

Melbourne’s The Shine On Foundation to trial a mobile shower van. Nic says the team was excited to be able to provide people on the street with the ability to shower in a safe space. “Being clean and feeling connected with the community is a basic human right,” says Nic. “Being clean restores self-esteem and confidence,” he adds, “but the positive conversations and interaction our volunteers provide for our homeless friends is another important thing Orange Sky Showers can offer.” With one in 200 Australians experiencing homelessness on any given night, innovative services such as Orange Sky Laundry and now Orange Sky Showers continue to be essential in improving hygiene and helping to restore dignity to those living on the streets. FASHION ONE TO WATCH Leith Wilson chats to the designer and businesswoman behind Misha Collection about building a fashion legacy. WITH THE FASHION world at her fingertips, Michelle Aznavorian, designer and founder of cutting-edge label Misha Collection, is empowering women one dress at a time. When she was just 19 years old, Michelle opened her first business: an eBay store selling second-hand designer clothes. After graduating from the Melbourne School of Fashion at age 22 with experience in fashion buying and product development, Michelle knew she was ready for an entrepreneurial adventure. And so Misha Collection was born. “I remember having racks of clothing all throughout my mum and dad’s house and my partner’s house,” Michelle says. “It got to a point where they could barely open their front doors; that’s when I looked into leasing a warehouse!” Fast forward to now: Michelle is 27 years old and the highly-coveted Misha Collection has become a household name around the world. stylemagazines.com.au

“Each piece is designed to empower the wearer; to give her a new confidence while feeling sexy, sophisticated and stylish,” Michelle says. “Misha Collection is about pushing the boundaries of fashion and creating show-stopping styles that enhance the female form.” With her designs worn by A-list celebrities including Jennifer Hawkins, Kim Kardashian and Gigi Hadid, Michelle is determined to make her label a worldwide phenomenon. “I’m a really motivated person,” she says. “When I set my mind to something, I really push myself to the limit and don’t back down.” All Michelle’s hard work is definitely paying off; earlier this year, supermodel Bella Hadid fronted the first solo runway show for Misha Collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia. “I was so pleased [about] the positive response we received [at MBFW],” says Michelle. “It was wonderful having Bella Hadid as a highlight, not

only for our show, but the entire festival. To be able to unveil our upcoming partnership with Bella on a global scale was an amazing experience, and she was such a pleasure to work with. She was very down-to-earth and humble, and really supportive of the brand. She went above and beyond her role, and we have a great working relationship now.” Michelle says she has the Kardashians and social media to thank for the splash she’s making in both the Australian and US fashion markets. Now it’s time to conquer the European market. “In the next five years, look out for Misha in several high-end department stores and boutiques,” Michelle says. In the meantime, Michelle is focusing on building her brand here in Australia. “Since I started Misha Collection, I’ve dedicated every waking moment to growing the label and cementing it in the fashion marketplace,” she says. “I’ve taken risks, and it’s really paid off.” 37

Karen’s quirky range of shades continues to command an enviable celebrity following, with Alexa Chung, Gigi Hadid and Rihanna making up the mix.

HEAVY METAL Known for her cool and quirky designs, this season Karen Walker continues to push the boundaries, writes Emma Duffy. THERE ARE FASHION designers who find fame and fortune by specialising – think Camilla Frank and her range of kaftans. And then there are the fashion designers who dip their brush in many pots and succeed. Karen Walker is the latter. Like the best success stories, Karen came from remarkably humble beginnings. Beginning with just $100, she made and sold t-shirts to friends in her native New Zealand. Karen’s eponymous label has grown into a lucrative global brand which includes clothing, homewares, jewellery, shoes, handbags and, of course, her signature range of eyewear. With her brand now stocked in more than 30 countries and sales of her sunglasses raking in an estimated $35 million a year, she’s come a long way.

Karen’s designs cleverly play with cultural subtext, juxtaposing luxe and street, masculine and feminine, folk and utility to create stunning pieces that are both directional and wearable. Her success can be partly attributed to a shift in the eyewear market. While sunglasses were previously considered an accessory to a label’s main collection and an affordable entry point into a brand, in recent years eyewear has been recognised as a stand-alone category. Arguably one of the most successful eyewear brands on the market, Karen’s quirky range of shades continues to command an enviable celebrity following, with big names such as Alexa Chung, Gigi Hadid and Rihanna making up the mix.

Despite her phenomenal success, Karen Walker isn’t one to rest on her (no doubt very stylish) laurels. The new Metals collection was inspired by Man Ray’s perfection of solarisation – a photographic technique of transposing the light and dark of negatives to create a metallic effect. “We altered our focus this season with new styles that expose their intrinsic architecture and create a sense of illusion, almost as if the frames float on the face,” says Karen. With a colour palette of metallic gold, blue and silver, Metals introduces new lens shapes and colours. If this latest collection is anything to go by, the Karen Walker brand will continue to soar for years to come.

Hannah, Robert and James White

TIMELESS BEAUTY With a rich family history and exceptional experience, the Robert White Jewellers team knows jewellery. IF YOU WERE to buy a couch, would you prefer one made cheaply overseas from low quality material that is stapled together? Or would you prefer a couch made from exceptional material that is lovingly and locally handcrafted by a skilled professional? The team at Robert White Jewellers says jewellery is no different. Attracted to the history and beauty of the arcade, young goldsmith Robert White purchased the business (then called S Knowles and Sons) in 1974. “I’ve been working in the Queen Street Mall as a jeweller since I was 16 and I’m now 68,” Robert says. “So I’ve seen the evolution of Brisbane’s jewellery market and all of the different trends, the highs and lows. That knowledge has filtered down to both my children and employees.” Robert’s son James has a flair for both practical design and creativity. Daughter Hannah says she has always been creative, and this complements her father’s practical skills in design.

“As a little girl, I loved sitting on the floor in Dad’s office, playing with the gemstones that he was using in the next exciting piece,” Hannah recalls fondly. Known for sourcing gems of exceptional quality and for their second-to-none attention to detail in manufacturing, the team at Robert White also takes the time to involve clients every step of the way by showing loose gems and drawings, and having fittings before the piece is completed. Despite family holidays being a rarity, Hannah says working with family is fantastic. “You always have someone at work and at home to bounce new and sometimes crazy ideas off,” she says. “You also know that they will always be there for you. The three of us have grown closer since we started working together.” A visit to Robert White Jewellers will ensure your piece is made from exceptional material and is lovingly handcrafted by their professional team.

ETHICALLY ADMIRED The rise of eco-friendly jewellery proves we are thinking differently about the way we purchase our pearl adornments. PEARLS ARE ONE of the oldest known gems on the planet and are the foundation of every woman’s jewellery collection. The oyster’s biography, pearls are known as “the queen of gems” and “the gem of queens”. Their timeless allure makes an instant statement and allows you to express your individuality in a natural way. Intimately linked to human history, pearls possess a connection to nature that often goes unrecognised by today’s wearers. All pearls are eco-friendly. Many are naturally formed when an irritant occurs in a wild oyster or mussel; cultured pearls are grown on pearl farms. There are many different shapes, sizes and varieties of pearls. Pearl farming is incredibly ecofriendly; there is no adverse environmental impact and a farm of anywhere between 100,000 to

Australian South Sea pearls are grown in these cages; the process can take up to two years! 150,000 shells can create an environment that acts as a natural water filter, with the oysters feeding on the nutrients present in the water. Mark Seddon, owner and director of Brisbane’s Girls Love Pearls, believes he has seen a rise in eco-friendly and ethically-sourced jewellery products in recent years. “People are now being more conscious of not buying anything associated with a conflict in another country that can fund regimes and cartels involved with non-humanitarian activities,” he says. Mark also makes this conscious decision when sourcing pearls for his pieces. He chooses to only deal with reputable sources, communicating with

the owners of the farms themselves, or wholesalers that follow stringent supply chain rules as set down by international gemstone associations. Located in the iconic Brisbane Arcade, Girls Love Pearls offers a spectacular array of exquisite pearl jewellery. Custom creation and design services are available if the item of your dreams does not exist. Mark will combine your vision with contemporary innovation to create a stunning signature piece of unsurpassed quality and enduring glamour. FROM WORRIER TO WARRIOR

FOR YOUR NEXT event, take your cue from the catwalk and inject a dose of fierce fashion flair into your styling. Creating a theme for your event is essential; it gives a seamless effect and helps you cultivate the perfect ideas to suit the occasion. Start with a carefully-curated selection of textural neutral basics such as cane chairs, timber tables and white linen. Next, bring in swathes of layered detail with fabrics seen in curtains, ceiling draping and cushions. Finally, finish the look by accessorising with pops of metallic accompanied by sleek and sophisticated fresh blooms. The key to making this ensemble a success is in keeping the palette neutral and utilising textures and tones to bring it to life. This fashion-forward look works particularly well with corporate events when you want to give that impressive yet effortless flair. It also translates from daytime to evening, with the concept suited to anything from a power breakfast to networking cocktails.

COLD COFFEE HIT? Yes, please! With the weather warming up, and as innovators, movers and shakers here at Wolff HQ, we’ve created a trifecta of cold coffee options for those hot days. Big Bad Wolff Espresso Bar is the flagship for Cold Wolff, which is our nitrogen-infused cold brew coffee on tap. The Nitro Cold Brew Coffee is a tasty blend comprised of African and Central American beans, while the Nitro Cold Brew Tea is a fruity specialty tisane. Head to Queen of Pops and get your right royal caffeine hit in an ice-cold hot shot pop. The Crown Jewels range replicates the “in cup” experience, but frozen in a pop. Each handcrafted pop contains a double ristretto of barista-pulled specialty coffee – a kick on a stick! Our latest coffee creation can also be enjoyed at Queen of Pops in a cone or cup; it’s coffee soft serve. Handcrafted filter coffee and delicious ice-cream is whipped together to bring you some seriously tasty soft serve. A rotating range of Single Origin coffees will have you coming back for more!

TAPPING INTO YOUR fears and turning them into new opportunities is not a special gift or talent; it is a human ability and something we can all do. We just need to feel comfortable facing our worries to then overcome them. Avoiding your fears will only cause you more difficulty, leaving you stuck in the same space year after year. Challenge yourself to shake things up with these practical steps that will lead to a worry-free way of life: • Write down your worries and fears. • Carefully observe each one and decide how you could best approach the worst case scenario if it came to pass. • Look at your fear in perspective and think about its potential impact on your life. Will it matter in a week, a month or in a year’s time? • Consider whether you know someone who can assist with your fear. Don’t be afraid to ask for assistance and be willing to learn from others. With these tips and a little courage, you will learn to tackle your worries. Over time, you will acquire the skills to face your fears head-on.

WHAT MAKES IT ANTIQUE?

DESIGNER QUALITY

STRUCTURAL REPAIRS

WHEN IT COMES to purchasing antique jewellery there are many things to consider. It can be difficult for the untrained eye to be sure if a piece is truly authentic. Being aware of different English silver and gold hallmarks or carrying a Bradbury’s Book of Hallmarks guide can greatly assist when determining if your piece is legitimate or not. Being involved with antique jewellery for 20 years, I have built up many reputable contacts all around the world, which helps guarantee authenticity. When sourcing my pieces, I look for a combination of uniqueness and high quality materials. I’m always looking for something outstanding and of a quality that I can proudly put my name to, as well as encompassing a unique style and history that excites me. It can be difficult to explain the intrinsic value or feel of a piece. However, with many years experience in the industry, I have the confidence to know if an item is original. Shop confidently at Avenue J knowing my pieces are truly authentic and unique.

KITCHEN UPGRADES ARE becoming more popular than ever, as homeowners have realised just how much value a modern kitchen can add to their property. These days, people are opting for natural products in their kitchen renovations, with surfaces such as granite and marble making big waves in the industry. Homeowners tend to appreciate the “dugout-of-the-earth” character that natural materials have. No matter the scale of your renovations, proper planning is as important as the execution. Last month, the Housing Industry Association Awards took place and Designer Kitchens came home with wins in the kitchen renovation categories, as well as the outdoor kitchen and laundry categories. As well as these wins, our runner-up placements in a variety of different categories are a testament to the quality of work from our team. This public recognition further solidifies our reputation as one of the best in the industry for kitchens and all other areas of the home.

FINDING A CRACK in a wall constructed of masonry is a fairly common issue; however, such defects can mean cost-consuming repair work. To avoid need for future repairs, it’s important to implement the correct method and select the best coating system available. In general terms, paint cracking should be “V” ground out and filled flush with a premium-grade polyurethane compound. Unfortunately, cracking will not cease moving so a high build membrane application with outstanding elasticity is then selected. Polyurethane sealant, along with the membrane, will prevent moisture and atmospheric fallout entering the building by way of these applications moving with the underlying crack. Low-film-build house paints should be avoided in circumstances where significant cracking is present. Another tip is to avoid the use of dark tone colours as they heat up the surface and accelerate movement within the wall, which can result in further cracking.

MATTERS OF THE HEART

SPRINGTIME JACKETS

EXPERIENCE THIS

EACH YEAR, OUR hearts complete a fourseason cycle of emotional growth, ensuring we learn to “hearticulate” and build respect. I believe that self-respect is the ultimate currency in life. Cold emotional winters necessitate that we acquire wisdom, conserve fuel and process sadness. Autumn requires us to surrender to change by shedding the old to embrace the new. Summer is often a time when anger fires up and we need to master the art of calm assertion; and spring offers us new growth. But do we always take the time to stop and smell the roses? Sometimes we can experience all four seasons in one day with our loved ones and in ourselves; however, remaining emotionally present is key. If you are looking to make a major change in your world, please do not short-change yourself by trying to do so in under 90 days. Instead, give yourself permission to complete a full season of commitment to self-betterment. As a result of this decision, new growth can occur, giving you a robust chance of sustaining your heart’s dreams in the future.

WHEN SPRING ARRIVES, many Queenslanders believe that their days of donning jackets are over for another year. But that shouldn’t be the case; it’s an exciting time as we can transition into lighter-weight and more casual jackets. I am all for giving the suit a rest and opting for the odd jacket and trouser combination. With a little care, this style can be pulled off while still looking professional, stylish and sophisticated. The trend of open weaves from winter continues in spring, but tighter weaves in lighter wool/linen blends give the jackets a vibe of casual elegance. Cotton pique is also a popular spring fabric; it’s the cotton used in polo shirts. Imagine how comfortable this jacket would be once the weather begins to warm up! Another way to show the casual nature of the jacket is to use a one-centimetre hand stitch on the lapel and pockets for a more laidback look. Spring is my favourite time of year and it’s the perfect excuse to get creative. You can definitely expect to see blue jackets with white chinos!

WE ALL LOVE getting the VIP treatment. But when it comes to the retail experience, there aren’t many places that make you feel like the most important person in the room. These days, we want more than a simple transaction; we want to have an experience element wrapped around our purchase. At Xennox, we believe every couple should have an experience that they will remember forever when purchasing their engagement or wedding rings. So how do you find a retailer that offers the kind of service you deserve? Google reviews are a great place to start, as previous clients can tell you if a business truly values each client’s journey and strives to create amazing experiences for them. Everything we do at Xennox Diamonds is centred around creating a phenomenal experience for every customer who enters our store. SPRING RACING EVOLUTION OF RACEWEAR

Joli Boutique Striped handmade headpiece $350

From stockings to puffy sleeves, Paige Booth uncovers the evolution of Fashions on the Field throughout the decades. FASHION TRENDS ARE constantly changing, and racewear is no different. Now it’s time to travel back through the ages and explore the decades of racewear that won our hearts. After World War II, women opted for knee‑length hemlines with gloves, hats and umbrellas for their Fashions on the Field elegance. Matching outfits soon became the norm, with coordinated stockings, gloves and hats making their mark on racewear fashion in the ’50s. In 1965, English supermodel Jean Shrimpton turned conservative racewear on its head with an above-the-knee dress and exposed shoulders. Her controversial attire inspired women to start showing off their legs the following year. Hippie love made its way to the Melbourne Cup in the 1970s, with ladies opting for flowing maxis and floor-sweeping pantsuits. Large, wide-brimmed hats accompanied these styles, adding to the bohemian look. The next decade ushered in shoulder pads, oversized earrings and puffy sleeves. These signature ’80s trends slipped into Melbourne Cup’s Fashions on the Field, making fashion experimental, individual and fun for the first time. The following decades called for all things bigger, tighter and bolder, but the tight suits were eventually traded for finer details and waists were

These days, women are straying from designer labels and heading down the aisle of DIY according to Laura Churchill, a fashion stylist and the head of Brisbane Racing Club’s Fashion Committee. “It’s quite popular for Fashions on the Field entrants to create their own looks, especially their own millinery, which I think is great,” she says. PLATTER PERFECTION With these platter hacks, you’ll be the hostess with the mostest, writes Erin Leckie. WHILE IT ISN’T an exact science, there is certainly an art to creating incredible, Pinterestworthy cheese platters. A great way to keep your guests satisfied while you prepare dinner, a cheese platter or charcuterie board can also create a unique talking point when done right. This soiree season, we experiment with different flavours, textures, colours and arrangements to help you create the perfect platter. OVERCROWD If there’s such a thing as a cheese platter trend, this season’s would be “rustic opulence”. More is better, and messy is in style. Start with a large, clean wooden board and place your cheese first – after all, it is the star. As a general rule, offer one hard, soft, blue and aged cheese, with at

stylemagazines.com.au

least one familiar cheese among your selection. Now it’s time to fill in the gaps with exotic fruits and unique accompaniments such as dukkah, smoked artichokes or a chunk of honeycomb. ADD COLOUR Liven up your platter with a mix of fresh and dried fruit – think strawberries, pears, grapes, figs and dried apricots – and group them around your cheese. In small dishes, serve up a minimum of two dips. Make contrasting colour choices with your platter; you can use beetroot and basil pesto for a great visual impact. MIX IT UP Various other sweet and salty items can work as well. Try cured meats such as prosciutto and salami for a little bite, or candied nuts and

pistachios for a sweet fix. Assorted seasonal and dried fruits such as figs, cherries, apples and pears can be the perfect accompaniment. DECORATE Start by placing the cheese in different corners of your board and then fill in the gaps with sliced figs, dates, cured meats, crackers, grapes, almonds, quince paste, and olives. Pick whatever ingredients are in season and look delicious. Just place all the ingredients directly on the board and some other ingredients in small bowls. ENJOY Once you’ve created your Pinterest-worthy masterpiece, it’s time to enjoy. Just remember to take a picture before your guests arrive – it won’t last long!

HIGH TEA IN WONDERLAND A decadent high tea at The Balfour Kitchen ticks all the boxes, writes Sarah Taviani. RAIN FALLS LIGHTLY outside as we sit at a cosy corner table at The Balfour Kitchen. My mouth is watering while Amy describes the high tea she’s created; if I drool, I’ll pretend it’s a stray raindrop. We start with the yuzu slice: it’s light, tangy and creamy, with just enough chocolate to herald the decadence ahead. The French Earl Grey ganache tartlet is my favourite, hands-down. I was prepared for rich, dark chocolate but this is blissfully refreshing. I refrain from stealing the second one on the plate. Sharing is caring. Is it just my imagination or are these chocolatedipped strawberries sent straight from heaven? I feel like all other strawberries will be ruined for me after this experience. Ah, well. We had a good run. Amy said the Armenian nutmeg cake breaks up

the richness of the chocolate macadamia brownie so I scoop both onto my plate and alternate spoonfuls. The combination of spicy fruit and chocolate that ensues is everything I need in life. We finish with the pièce de résistance: the citrus mousse. The creamy and crunchy layers work so well together I have to keep asking my fellow Styler, “Are you sure you didn’t want any more of this? You can have more!” I’m lying. Don’t take more. I want this citrus goodness all for myself. As we leave, I’m already wondering who I can take with me next time. FOOD+DRINK Style standout… The ricotta gnocchi

FARM FRESH The Croft House Town Kitchen & Bar is serving up a slice of the country to city dwellers, writes Hannah Doody. STEPPING INSIDE THE space once occupied by Palettes, the interior is barely recognisable. The Croft House is a warm and welcoming space, stylishly furnished with dark wood, leather and brass detailing. As the attentive waiter seats us at the marble-top bench overlooking the street, I admire the attention to detail in every aspect of the design, from the rustic wooden menus to the fine glassware. The lunch menu embraces quality over quantity; while the selection isn’t extensive, it’s well-curated, with meat, fish and vegetarian options, and even breakfast-inspired dishes. We opt for the house‑cured salmon on toasted rye, avocado, goats’ cheese and a poached egg to start. “Eggs shouldn’t just be reserved for breakfast,” my fellow Styler says as she pierces the perfectly poached egg on top of the cured salmon. I agree with her – everything about this dish is so great that I would eat it at absolutely any time of day. 62

The salmon is fresh and flavoursome (it’s loaded with avocado, which is always welcome) and the tangy goats’ cheese cuts through nicely. But the highlight of the experience was the ricotta gnocchi with assorted mushrooms, wild mushroom cream, sage and brown butter. The gnocchi was so soft it actually melted in my mouth and the mushroom sauce was rich and earthy. We didn’t waste any, mopping up the remnants with some thick-cut chips. We would have been content to sit there for hours, people-watching and drinking wine, but, unfortunately, the office was calling. The Croft House is a definite contender for your new local. Whether you’re after a quick bite to eat at lunch or a few drinks after work, you can’t help but soak up the relaxed yet stylish vibe. HALLOWEEN

We’ll carve your pumpkin for free this year!

FEELING FESTIVE With the festive season upon us, Superior Fruit owner Peter Maniatis gives us his top tips on mixing up your event catering.

WHEN IT COMES to the festive season, there is nothing better than being over-prepared, especially if you are hosting your own event. Melbourne Cup may be the race that stops the nation, but the home and office parties are endless! The iconic day gives Australians the perfect excuse to celebrate, and we do so the only way we know how: with delicious food and drinks. For these kinds of events, Peter Maniatis, owner of Superior Fruit and Wendy’s Kitchen, recommends his specialty share platters. Whether you choose fruit, cheese or antipasto,

the platters arrive ready to serve, giving you more time to enjoy your celebrations. For his fruit platters, Peter uses an assortment of high-quality seasonal fruits. For antipasto platters, he has a simple rule: three quarters should be made up of family favourites such as salami and prosciutto, while the last quarter should introduce new options such as Wagyu salami. “It’s great to mix it up,” says Peter. “It’s the best way to try new things.” As well as cold platter options, Superior Fruit also offers hot food, including homemade

sausage rolls, pies and pasties. Another big annual event for Superior Fruit and Wendy’s Kitchen is Halloween; Peter has established strong relationships with Australian farmers to ensure a great supply of jack-o’lantern pumpkins every year. Peter even offers to personally carve the pumpkins for free, but encourages families to get involved in the activity and share the exciting experience with the kids. DON’T GAMBLE WITH FERTILITY

BEFRIEND YOUR BROWS

ON THE RIGHT FOOT

ONE IN SIX Australian couples experience infertility. Contributing factors to consider for females include age, endometriosis, cancer treatments, PCOS, tubal abnormalities, and lifestyle factors such as obesity. Male issues can also include low sperm count and motility, injury, obesity, recreational drugs and hormone deficiencies. In some cases, infertility may be a combination of both male and female factors. Each person is different and must be treated accordingly, so we strive to obtain a detailed patient history and then design a treatment plan for the individual or couple. Some women may choose to freeze their eggs for future use; sperm can also be frozen in the case of cancer treatments or gender reassignment. Ovulation induction, artificial insemination, IVF, and donor eggs, sperm and embryos are also alternative options. If you are struggling with infertility, you can seek professional advice from a fertility specialist about the many procedures available.

FACIAL TATTOOING CAN change your life. When done correctly, it defines your facial features and accentuates your beauty. However, when done incorrectly, it can leave you feeling dissatisfied with zero confidence and no hope for a solution. Many industry technicians make the mistake of following fashion trends based on celebrities. As beautiful as their brows may be, brows aren’t one-size-fits-all. I have found that semi-permanent microblading is the perfect technique I use to accommodate for individual facial shape, natural expressions and personality. Microblading lasts for two years, offering fuss-free maintenance for those with busy schedules. If you’re considering semi-permanent tattooing, be sure to do your homework. Look through before and after brow pics that resonate with you and research your technician’s ethics, training and pigment products. Not ready to take the (semi-)permanent leap? A HD Brows treatment offers bespoke brows without the long-term commitment.

DURING INTENSE PHYSICAL activity, the venous system in the legs experiences a huge increase in load. For people who are more susceptible to varicose veins, this kind of high‑intensity activity can damage the vein walls. As a result, many athletic people (particularly runners) visit our clinic to seek help with their varicose veins. A number of these patients choose to defer treatments to avoid clashing with training schedules. Unfortunately, the risk of skin ulceration and microcellular damage to the skin around the lower legs and ankles can increase the longer you wait. Endovenous Laser Ablation (ELA) or Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy (UGS) are non-invasive clinic-based procedures that don’t involve hospitalisation. These walk-in, walk-out appointments are easy to make, even for those with busy schedules. If you are looking for exercises that will ease discomfort in your legs, you can find a range of easy video tutorials on my blog, which can be found on our website.

THE NEW FAMILY NORM

ACHIEVE SALON STYLE

NON-SURGICAL FAT REMOVAL

IN THE PAST, having children was never a question of if; it was a question of when. Some thoughtless people will be judgemental about couples without children but childlessness is not an inferior family structure. It is usually either a conscious choice or the result of a health issue such as infertility, injury or illness. Whatever the reason for remaining child-free, it is nobody else’s business what another couple does in their relationship. Being child-free can bring with it some wonderful professional, economic, personal, and quality of life benefits. It may also be fraught with some psychological challenges. It is important for child-free couples (especially those who battle with health issues) to remain focused on satisfying their range of psychological needs, including meaning and purpose. Meeting challenges, engaging in the community, enjoying quality relationships, and feeling a sense of accomplishment in other areas of life are important factors for child-free couples, no matter what their circumstances.

THERE’S NOTHING BETTER than leaving a salon looking like you’ve just stepped out of the pages of Vogue, but there’s one common thought at the end of a hair appointment: “How am I going to create this look by myself?” I’ve had many of my clients ask this question, so I have a few tips that will help you recreate your salon style at home. Paying attention to the different types of brushes that your stylist uses when blow-drying is the best place to start when trying to achieve the look later on. Make sure you have a decent brush, section clips and blow-dryer so you can get the best results at home. Once you’ve got the right tools, you need the expert advice. Ask your stylist to explain how they use their tools to create your desired look. There’s no reason why your hair can’t have that salon finish all the time. At Hair of Eden, we offer masterclasses to show you how to style your hair at home; join us for a class that will have you looking runway‑ready every day!

DO YOU HAVE stubborn areas of fat that seem to be immune to diet and exercise? Would you like to have those areas reduced painlessly, without worrying about needles or surgery? Then don’t agonise over it any longer: CoolSculpting fat reduction may be the answer. The CoolSculpting procedure is the only clinically-proven non-surgical body contouring treatment that uses controlled freezing to eliminate fat from your body. With this walk-in, walk-out procedure, there is no surgery and no downtime. CoolSculpting simply targets specific areas with no damage to surrounding nerves, blood vessels or skin. CoolSculpting is a non-invasive treatment that can assist in contouring your body by reducing any of those annoying exercise and diet-resistant bulges without surgery. Book in and join us at 6pm on October 26 for a Cool Event. You’ll receive a free consultation and demonstration, as well as access to our exclusive giveaways.

CREATIVE COLOUR With summer around the corner, we chat to Crystal Ensabella from Fabrik Hair about changing your colour for the new season.

Crystal Ensabella

WHEN IT COMES to mixing up the colour of your hair, whether you’re looking to deepen or lighten your look, it is a decision that requires some careful thought and planning. Fabrik Hair is home to a team of leaders in the industry of colour correcting. Owner Crystal Ensabella reveals her tips and tricks for how to achieve expert colour. What is colour correction? Colour correction is the process of fixing hair colour, whether it be correcting a previous mistake or taking the hair from dark to light or vice versa. What sets Fabrik Hair apart? Our team listens to

what the client wants and we guide them on what will work best to achieve their desired look. We are extremely honest about the process and that it can take a few visits to achieve the colour they want. We are also very focused on the condition of the hair. We recommend at-home treatments to keep the integrity of their hair, and use Olaplex in our colour services to assist with this process. What’s the difference between a good and bad colour correction? A bad colour correction can result in hair breakage and an uneven colour. A good colour correction achieves the desired result, even though it may take multiple visits,

especially if going from dark to light. Our preferred brand is De Lorenzo and we choose to use their products because they are a mineral-based and cruelty-free brand that focuses on the condition of the hair. We also use Olaplex, which is a bond multiplier that repairs and multiplies the bonds in your hair during and after a chemical service. This allows us to push a little further with our colour work with less damage. FABRIK HAIR 694 ANN ST, FORTITUDE VALLEY P 3257 1166 FABRIKHAIR.COM

BEAUTY AT THE BARRACKS

Brooklyn Beauty Bar is set to give The Barracks in Petrie Terrace a face lift. AFTER THE SUCCESS of Brooklyn Beauty Bar’s flagship store on James Street, Brooke Jesberg has decided to expand her brand by opening a second salon at The Barracks. Brooke and her business partner, Carlie Landsdown, have been searching for a new location for more than a year. “The Barracks is perfect,” Brooke says. “So close to the city, and the parking is a breeze.” For the new salon at The Barracks, Brooke has chosen to create a gentlewomen’s club with a 1940s New York City vibe. The fit-out is described by Brooke as “fun and urban with a New York feel”, just as the name “Brooklyn” suggests. The interior of The Barracks branch of Brooklyn Beauty Bar is a mixture of sumptuous leather and velvet complete with exposed brick accents, which

creates the ideal backdrop for the brand-new luxury space. Two amazing bars are also on offer – one reserved for champagne and the other for classic gin cocktails. “People can book for groups of up to 10 guests, have a few cocktails, get their brows done, get their nails done and have a couple of drinks at the same time,” says Brooke. “It’s a fun way to catch up with friends while ticking off beauty essentials. “I’m a bit of a multi-tasker myself,” she adds. “I love the idea that I can park, get my eyebrows or lash extensions done or a quick spray tan and then whip into Coles for the groceries, all while my car is being washed in the car park. Boom! All done!” With such a convenient location, Brooke expects to see many of her clients heading straight from their appointments to a night on the town, looking

BREAK A SWEAT If working out isn’t your idea of fun, changing up your wardrobe could become your fitness motivation, writes Emma Duffy. DO YOU EVER find yourself staring into your wardrobe, searching for a gym outfit that is both stylish and comfortable, only to end up back in your trackies and on the couch instead? While we may not all have a Kardashian-esque fitness closet, channelling that wardrobe envy may be just what you need to spice up your fitness game. These few easy tips will help you organise your collection of activewear and have you off to the gym in no time! Colour-code your workout wardrobe. Not only does it look good, colour-coding your clothes makes it much easier to find what you’re looking

for. As a general rule, organise your gear by starting with black garments, working through the rainbow and finishing with white. Dedicate one space to your activewear. Whether you lay out all your workout gear the night before or grab something the morning of your gym session, having all your exercise clothes in the one place means you don’t have to think twice about choosing an outfit that looks great. Find clothes that look good together. Feeling comfortable is just as important as looking good. Keep a variety of loose- and tight-fitting garments so you can mix and match something to suit your mood and your workout.

HYDRATE IN STYLE Fitting in your eight glasses a day is easy with a bit of style, writes Emma Duffy. WHEN WARMER WEATHER hits, you can dehydrate faster than normal, leaving you feeling yucky and tired. Hydration is great for your internal health, and drinking plenty of water can leave your skin clear and glowing so you’ll look and feel good. Win-win! And when you have a cute (and stylish!) water bottle on hand, you’ll be drinking the recommended two litres of water a day before you know it.

BKR bottles prove that keeping hydrated is always in style.

FIT CHIC The S’well bottle is the athleisure addict’s best friend. Composed of non-toxic stainless steel, the bottle keeps liquids cold for 24 hours, which is perfect for those who love tough workouts. Available in a range of textures and colours, there’s a bottle to match every pair of your sneakers.

TRENDSETTER Simple and stylish, it’s no wonder the BKR bottle is a favourite among models and celebrities. The sleek glass bottle has earned its reputation as a coveted beauty essential; this is undoubtedly the most beautiful way to stay hydrated.

GIRL ON THE GO An overstuffed bag is no excuse to go without water and the Kor bottle is the perfect solution. The flatsided bottle fits seamlessly between all your essentials, while the flip-top cap protects the spout from germs and prevents leakage.

NOT FUSSED With funky designs, cheeky quotes such as “I don’t give a sip” and hydration status reminders every 100mls, Typo’s quirky range of bottles ensures that drinking water is never boring. Even the sugar lovers will have incentive to sip away all day!

instructors with dance backgrounds. Owner Shay Stafford has been a professional dancer for more than 20 years, with 13 years spent in Paris as a dance captain for the Moulin Rouge. “I was responsible for training dancers from around the world and keeping the show up to scratch night after night,” Shay says. “You need to have enormous amounts of energy. “I try to bring a bit of my dance background to each and every Xtend Barre class I teach,” Shay adds. “I love the precision of Pilates, and the strength and grace of ballet.”

Shay reveals that Xtend Barre was the key to regaining her pre-baby fitness. Now, Shay loves being able to help others on their own fitness journey with Xtend Barre. “I love to instruct non-dancers as they improve so quickly,” she says. “It is extremely rewarding to see people improve their posture and begin moving with control and purpose in just a few classes.” XTEND BARRE 76 COMMERCIAL RD, NEWSTEAD P 0401 112 120 XTENDBARRE.COM

SEASONS OF THE HEART

“WHEN WE ARE EMOTIONALLY FIT, WE MASTER THE ART OF SELFRESPECT”

Cynthia Morton knows a thing or two about mental health issues. MISDIAGNOSED WITH BIPOLAR disorder after a suicide attempt as a teenager, Cynthia Morton discovered in her 30s that she was actually suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of her harrowing upbringing. Now a blogger, speaker and bestselling author, Cynthia’s passion for bringing awareness to mental health has earned her a legion of awards. Her latest work, a quartet of books entitled The Four Seasons of the Heart, will teach readers how to build and sustain emotional fitness and master how to “hearticulate” their truth with confidence, clarity and calm assertion. “An emotionally fit person is one who has developed robust emotional muscle to endure, learn and grow through all of life’s unavoidable emotional seasons of the heart,” Cynthia says.

“When we are emotionally fit, we master the art of self-respect and can hearticulate – in other words, speak fluently and bravely from our heart about what we feel.” Frustrated by a lack of resources available on emotional recovery relating to trauma and addiction, Cynthia was driven to write a more insightful, to-the-point text that delved deep into the four key emotional hurdles: anger, change, sadness and growth. “Hearticulating about healing the traumatised heart that is so often forgotten in the conversations around mental health is a dialogue I feel very

passionate about,” she says. This month, Cynthia will celebrate 21 years of sobriety during Mental Health Week in October. In the same week, she will launch The Four Seasons of the Heart, which she reveals will be helpful for people who need assistance with conflict resolution and embracing new things. Deborah Hutton will host the Brisbane launch luncheon, which will be held at E’cco Bistro on October 15. For bookings, phone 3831 8461. TRAVEL

Spend the day lounging on the beach or hike to the other beautiful Cinque Terre villages.

LA DOLCE VITA Surrounded by crystal-clear waters and picturesque coastline, Kiri Johnston falls in love with Italian paradise Monterosso al Mare. AFTER TWO PLANES, two trains and 16 dreaded hours of travelling from Majorca, I finally arrived in the Italian town of Monterosso al Mare. I had dreamt of visiting the seaside village from the moment I first heard of it, and was delighted to discover it was even more amazing than I had imagined. It was truly love at first sight. Monterosso is the first town in the picturesque Cinque Terre – five small villages nestled along the Italian Riviera coastline. Divided into two districts (the old town and the new town) Monterosso is bursting with a traditional Italian feel. The new town is more popular with tourists; its seafront promenade features the famous Fegina 82

beach, which is covered in lots of bright umbrellas. The old town is full of cobblestone alleyways and exudes a charming village feel. You can’t help but indulge in the amazing cuisine; both towns offer plenty of authentic trattorias, ristorantes and gelaterias to explore. The streets are dotted with many boutiques with beautiful artisan jewellery, linen, paintings, limoncello and much more. There are even markets, sometimes in both towns. There is beauty everywhere you look, from the crystal-clear sea to the lush greenery surrounding the mountains. It is the perfect place to unwind. You can spend the day lounging under the beach

umbrellas or go for a hike to discover the four other villages in the Cinque Terre. I only made it to Vernazza and Corniglia but I’d love to go back to see Manarola and Riomaggiore. I’ve heard that all of the towns, while similar at first glance, are unique in their own way. If you are going to visit I definitely recommend making a pit-stop (or 10) at Slurp! Gelato Artigianale on Via Fegina for amazing gelato. Cremino (Nutella) and pistachio were my favourites. I can easily say that Monterosso al Mare is by far my favourite place I’ve travelled to and four days was not long enough. I felt completely in my element and I cannot wait to return. OCTOBER16
