THE POWER OF

EQUALIT Y How the hit musical is helping lead our country towards marriage equality, writes Tamille Head.

EQUALITY ISN’T ABOUT TOLERANCE - EQUALITY IS ABOUT ACCEPTANCE. AND THAT’S WHAT KINKY BOOTS HAS AT ITS HEART.

14

THE BROADWAY PRODUCTION, Kinky Boots, is more than just a musical about a young man’s struggle to save his family’s shoe business and the unexpected friendships he makes along the way. It is a deeply moving story that examines inclusion, acceptance and equality, and how as a society we still have a way to go. Its arrival in Brisbane comes at an apt time, when Australia is in the throes of the same-sex marriage postal survey and nation-wide campaigning both for and against same-sex marriage. If you pick up a newspaper, turn on the television or scroll through your Facebook feed, you would be hardpressed to not find mention of the political debate that is currently raging in Australia. Deeply personal for so many people, marriage equality is the topic on everyone’s agenda and will likely be one of the

most defining moments in Australian history this decade. In light of the marriage equality debate, Kinky Boots is the musical that Australia needs right now. Equality is something that is very important to Kinky Boots lead performer, Toby Francis. “Equality isn’t about tolerance - equality is about acceptance. And that’s what Kinky Boots has at its heart,” he says. Toby plays the lead role of Charlie, a straightlaced guy who inherits his father’s failing shoe factory and forms an unlikely friendship with a drag queen named Lola. Their heart-warming relationship and the experiences they share is at the core of Kinky Boots’ true meaning. “Charlie and Lola meet and decide to go into business together to save the shoe factory. While OCTOBER17

Charlie feels that he understands Lola better than the other workers who are openly hostile to her, he isn’t really that different to them in his attitude until he fully accepts her for who she is. And that’s the real difference: acceptance.” Toby feels so strongly on the issue of marriage equality that he and his fiancé have decided they won’t get married until marriage equality is reached within Australia. “We couldn’t reconcile our involvement in an institution denied to others. We have a lot of gay friends and we can’t stand in front of them and ask them to watch us enjoy this rite of passage when this country doesn’t think their relationships are deserving of legal equality,” he says. While they have been together for twelve years, they are prepared to wait as long as it takes. Inclusion and equality in a show like Kinky Boots is an encouraging reminder that we have come so far, but it also provides a stark realisation that we still have more to do. “We are a far cry from where we were fifteen years ago when I was still in high school, but we still have a fair way to go and I think it’s important to be reminded that we’re heading in the right direction,” Toby says. “The national postal survey on marriage equality is a big indicator of that but we also have far to go with regard to trans rights, gender identity, and myriad other attitudes towards the LGBTQI community. And that’s not to mention how cautious and distrusting we seem to be of people

stylemagazines.com.au

who are culturally different.” Interestingly, Kinky Boots opened on Broadway in a similar political climate to the one that Australia is in right now. It’s impact on the opinions of Americans was noticed, and Toby` is already noticing the same effect here in Australia. “Sometimes we hear stories from people about how the show has impacted them in a positive way. We hear stories that it’s allowed them to have conversations with their family that they felt they couldn’t have before or given them the courage to get in contact with someone they lost touch with,” he says. “Some people tell us it feels like there is a family of people who understand them in some way and that is an incredibly important thing. It feels great to know we are having an impact on people’s lives, however large or small.” READ MORE ONLINE

THE RIGHT FIT Tamille Head chats to the developer at the forefront of Brisbane’s most creative shop fit outs. A BRISBANE-BASED DEVELOPING company is quite literally changing the face of the retail and hospitality industry. Spearheading the campaign to create unique customer experiences, Unita Group has a reputation for doing things differently. The managing director, Rob Rowe, who was awarded Brisbane Young Entrepreneur in 2014, has created ten businesses under the Unita Group umbrella. Most notable is Tu Projects, a shop fitting business that has seen him work on exciting projects with everything from fashion retailers such as Aje, H&M and Sass & Bide, to high-end restaurants and hipster burger joints. Rob is always heavily involved in the design & construction process to ensure better business 18

outcomes for Unita’s clients. “Sometimes customers come to us with an idea for a burger bar and they walk out with an idea for a Latin American food concept,” Rob says. “This could be because they haven’t fully analysed the current market situation or realised a location has reached saturation point for a particular food category. We collaborate with them and find something better suited or with more potential.” With a belief that it’s more important to design and build environments that are research-driven, giving customers what they want or need, rather than recreating whatever is popular, the Unita Group doesn’t believe in following trends.

“It doesn’t take long for trends to take over and become the norm. We want to make sure we’re one step ahead and looking at things from a different perspective,” Rob says. As for where the creative team behind Unita Group draw inspiration from, travel plays a huge role. “I recently visited Bali and was struck by how well they’ve executed the experiential, casual dining scene. They definitely have some of the best venues in the world,” Rob says. “Social media is another great way for us keep our finger on the pulse and stay up to date with what’s happening in the world of food and fashion.” READ MORE ONLINE

THE PYJAMA FOUNDATION PROVIDES CHILDREN IN CARE THE OPPORTUNTY

BANKING ON THE FUTURE

TO CHANGE THEIR LIVES.

founder (centre) Py jama Foundatioithn CBA Virginia staff Bronwy n Sheehan w

Discover how Commonwealth Bank are changing the lives of Australian youth. SINCE 2007, COMMONWEALTH Bank has awarded more than $20 million in community grants to 1,730 organisations nationwide. Now in its tenth year, the Community Grants program aims to support a range of youth programs focused on health, education and social inclusion. The Community Grants program is divided into three categories, including the National Grant, State and Territory Grants and Grassroots Grants. It is one of the largest and longest running programs of its kind in Australia. In recent years, the Community Grants program has donated annual grants of up to $10,000 to more than 200 youth-focused organisations. In 2017, Commonwealth Bank have chosen to award the impressive QLD State Grant to The Pyjama Foundation, who will receive 20

$100,000 per year for the next three years. The Pyjama Foundation provides children in foster care the opportunity to change the direction of their lives with learning, life skills and confidence. Pyjama Angels are recruited by the Foundation and matched with a child in care to spend time with them on a weekly basis, focusing on learning-based activities. Most importantly, the volunteers give foster children a chance to reach their life potential, despite a fragile start. By improving their learning skills, The Pyjama Foundation is making a positive, life-long impact. The work that the Pyjama Foundation do is something that is very close to the heart of Narissa Anderson, who was thrilled to find out that they were the 2017 QLD State

Grant recipient. “I was a child in foster care for 8 years and experienced firsthand the support from The Pyjama Foundation. I had a mentor for five years called Ani who supported me throughout high school. The only person that truly believed in who I was, was Ani, my Pyjama Angel,” Narissa said. “She made a very big difference in my life. I would not be who I am now, without the support and love of Ani,” Narissa said. With the help of Commonwealth Bank, The Pyjama Foundation will be using the grant to train a further 600 volunteers to mentor a child in foster care with literacy, numeracy and life skills. ACHIEVING EXCELLENCE We chat with leading Finance Specialist, Matt Cunliffe about the key to his successful career with Mortgage Choice. Matt Cunliffe

You were the youngest Mortgage Specialist in Australia, what lead you to start a career in the industry? I started out in Personal Banking for one of the four major banks whilst attending university as a way to supplement my income. There was an element of lending in this banking role and I really took to it. I got a major thrill out of creating solutions for clients to be able to realise their dream of property ownership and it wasn’t too long until I myself knew that I had a real knack for the role. A few years later I took the dive into the mortgage broking arena so that I could offer more than just one banks solutions to my customers. You have received many accolades, what are you most proud of? As an individual, in 2014 I was awarded Broker of the Year in QLD. This was the inaugural year for the awards and to win this at age 28, in an industry that typically has a much older average age, it was a huge achievement. As a business, in 2015 we won our first nationally recognised award at the Australian Mortgage Awards. We won the Franchise Brokerage of the Year award and to be recognised at a national level was something that we were ecstatic about. What motivates you? Assisting other people to achieve their goals and successes. This is why stylemagazines.com.au

I wake up and go to work every day. I love my job and being able to help everyday people take advantage of their situation and improve it. My family also motivate me. I grew up in a very modest lifestyle with my parents and 3 younger brothers. I love to be able to provide a certain level of lifestyle now for my wife and children that I couldn’t have had when I was growing up.

I LOVE MY JOB AND BEING ABLE TO HELP EVERYDAY PEOPLE TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THEIR SITUATION AND IMPROVE IT. MY FAMILY ALSO MOTIVATE ME. I LOVE TO BE ABLE TO PROVIDE A CERTAIN LEVEL OF LIFESTYLE NOW FOR MY WIFE AND CHILDREN. What are the keys to leading a successful team? Accountability and reliability are two huge factors in leading a successful team. If your team can count on you to be there when they need you and support them through the good and the bad, then you will have a team that buys into your beliefs and goals for your business. I motivate my

team by leading by example and being generous with my time and also with how they are rewarded. How has the industry changed? The industry has been amidst a shake-up from tech players and online lending providers looking to disrupt the mortgage business. We have combatted this by diversifying our offerings to also assist with Financial Planning, Commercial and Business Finance and can arrange finance for almost anything you can think of. How do you balance work and your personal life? When I first got into the Mortgage Broking business I found it really easy to let work take over. Now, however, being married with two children, personal life definitely gets its fair share of attention. My availability to meet with clients is broad but fixed which allows me to take Chase to school, and be at home for Miller’s bath and bed routine, most nights. I also have the non-negotiable off time for fitness built into my week to get the blood flowing. Weekends are strictly for family time. CIRCUS IN THE SKY What happens when Cirque du Soleil meets James Cameron’s Avatar? Brisbane is about to find out, writes Jade Horrobin. IT’S BEEN EIGHT years since the world of Pandora first captivated us on the big screen. I’m definitely guilty of having watched and re-watched James Cameron’s Avatar countless times, and couldn’t take my eyes off the scarilybold CGI creatures and enchanting forests as they appeared in strikingly realistic 3D. With the sequel film in the early stages of filming, sci-fi buffs still have a while to wait until Jake Sully and Neytiri resurface on our screens. The world of Pandora however, is open for discovery once again thanks to the awardwinning Cirque du Soleil. In a performance that’s

guaranteed to deliver a storytelling odyssey worth celebrating, Toruk -The First Flight is a must see this month. Gracing Brisbane’s Entertainment Centre from the 5th to the 15th of October, prepare to be transported back thousands of years before humans journeyed to Pandora. The riveting performance tells the story of Ralu and Entu, two Na’vi adolescents fearlessly searching for Toruk, a flying giant predator that rules the sky on a mission to save the Tree of Souls. The blue humanoid Na’vi are just as uniquelooking on stage as they are in CGI. In a welcome change, the stage costumes look less like the

strange Angelina Jolie look-alikes that appear in the movie, and more like the majestically azure forest nymphs Pandora deserves. The cutting-edge costuming is matched with stagecraft, puppetry and a soaring cinematic score. Get ready to experiece the bond between eye-catching performance and multimedia innovation and secure your tickets via Ticketek today. The world of Pandora is waiting.

Make healthy your new habit.

HACKS TO HELP YOU DOZE

Whatever your reason, there’s no better time to start living a healthy lifestyle.

Bad sleeper? Join the club. Courtney Frank reveals some of the weird and wacky hacks that will help you sleep.

A healthier, happier you starts with just one call to 1800 567 348.

IF, LIKE ME, you have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep, try coaxing yourself into a sound slumber with one of these methods that sound a little wacky but have the backing of experts. Take it from a light sleeper who’s tried everything: these are the tricks that actually work. 4-7-8 METHOD The 4-7-8 method is a breathing technique designed to help you fall asleep in less than a minute (tried and tested: it gets results). It works by increasing the amount of oxygen in your blood stream, slowing your heart rate down and releasing more carbon dioxide from your lungs. How do you do it? Place the tip of your tongue just behind your upper front teeth (keep it there) and exhale completely through your mouth. Close your mouth and inhale for four seconds, hold your breath for seven seconds and then exhale for eight. Repeat until you fall asleep! You’ll be lucky to make it through five repetitions. REVERSE PSYCHOLOGY METHOD If you have trouble sleeping, you’re likely laying in bed feeling anxious about falling asleep, which in turn makes you more anxious. stylemagazines.com.au

Our team will arm you with the tools to make the positive changes needed to achieve & maintain a healthy weight, for life.

Before you know it, you’re in a never-ending cycle of anxiety. The reverse psychology method actually challenges you to stay awake and keep your eyes wide open. Compelling yourself to stay awake creates a “paradoxical intention” which, studies show, helps you fall asleep more easily and results in less sleep performance anxiety. COLD WATER METHOD If it’s anxiety or extreme stress that’s stopping you from sleeping, sometimes all you need is a face full of cold water to help you calm your nervous system down. Do this by submerging your face in a bowl of super-cold water. Crazy, we know, but the cold triggers an involuntary reaction called the Mammalian Dive Reflex, which helps to slow the metabolism, lower your heart rate and blood pressure. Head to bed feeling relaxed (and maybe just a little chilled).

... try coaxing yourself into a sound slumber with one of these methods that sound a little wacky but have the backing of experts.

INSIDE VOICES The private conversations you have with yourself can be uplifting or destructive. With shockingly high numbers of women experiencing low self-confidence, Siobhan Taylor explores how to tame and silence your inner critic. WE ALL HAVE an inner-voice, a chattering in the forefront of our mind. This inner-voice can be a powerful stepping-stone to achieving your personal goals, but is your inner-voice at times an innercritic? At times, my own inner-critic says things like, “You are the worst-dressed person here” when I walk into a party, or “No one will want to read this article”. These negative predictions can often turn into self-fulfilling prophecies, giving your inner-critic more power than it deserves. If your inner-critic is holding you back, it might be time to wrangle her back in. BE AWARE OF YOUR THOUGHTS Our thoughts are often exaggerated, biased and disproportionate, and it can be easy to become

26

BON DESIGNS VIA FLAUNTER

oblivious to the messages we send ourselves. By taking the time to be aware of your thoughts, you can recognize and identify when some thoughts are hazardous or not necessarily true and instead take steps to encourage self-love. STOP RUMINATING If you’ve done something particularly embarrassing or frustrating, it can be easy to mull over it until you’ve blown everything completely our of proportion. It can be tempting to wallow, but repeatedly reminding yourself of that time you tipped a glass of wine on a stranger at a party is not helpful for your psyche. Ruminating won’t change anything or make you feel better – it will only reinforce internalized negativity. Distract

yourself with a positive activity – meditating, organizing your desk, chatting with a friend – and allow yourself some distance from the unpleasant memory. TREAT YOURSELF AS YOU WOULD A FRIEND If your friend was beating himself or herself up about a work presentation that didn’t go as well as they had hoped, you wouldn’t tell them “You’re so stupid. You don’t deserve that promotion.” You would offer compassionate words of support and encouragement such as, “You made a mistake but it’s not the end of the world,” or, “Everyone makes mistakes.” Treat yourself with the same kindness and encouragement as you would a friend – after all, you should be friends with yourself.

Cub Sport: Zoe Davis, Dan Puusaari, Tim Nelson, Sam Netterfield

CATCH CUB SPORT ON STAGE AT THE TRIFFID AS THEY TOUR BATS DURING FEBRUARY AND MARCH NEXT YEAR.

PHOTOGRAPHER: JENNIFER EMBLETON

EXPERIMENTAL SOUND From placing on Australia’s hottest music chart to campaigning for LGBTQI rights, this Brisbane band of indie-pop dreamers is back with a fresh new sound, writes Siobhan Taylor. SINCE THEY SPRUNG onto the scene in 2011, Cub Sport (which is made up of Tim Nelson, Zoe Davis, Sam Netterfield and Dan Puusaari) has brought new life to the Australian music scene with their unique and whimsical take on indie-pop. Now, Cub Sport has returned with their sophomore album, Bats, and a new, soulful sound. Unafraid to be brazenly themselves and to experiment with their sound, it will be exciting to see what they bring to the stage during their 2018 tour and how they will continue to evolve their unique brand of pop. Tim Nelson joined me to chat about their new release and what’s to come. Can you share with us about the experiences that inspired Bats? Bats follows the last couple of years of my life which has been a really stylemagazines.com.au

significant time. The songs sort of follows my personal journey from when I realised I was gay and in love with my best friend/band mate, to then coming out and getting together. Throw in navigating my twenties and attempting a career in music and there’s been a lot to write about! Can you tell us a little more about the inspiration behind O Lord? I wrote O Lord after Sam and I got together. I felt like I suddenly had everything I’d ever wanted but with that came a fear of losing it all. The video clip revealed a bit of the intimate truth behind the song. It was the first [music] video we’d made since coming out, so we wanted it to be a celebration of the place we’d come to with accepting and loving ourselves. How did it feel to receive such a positive

response to the announcement of your engagement with friend and band-mate Sam? It was so lovely! It took me a while to come to terms with my sexuality so to receive that love and support meant a lot. It’s so encouraging to see that there are wonderful people out there who love and support the LGBTQI community. Do you have any favourite tracks on the new album? It’s really hard to say, but Bats and Solo III are definitely special ones! How has Brisbane shaped you as artists? Brisbane has offered us a huge amount of inspiration and we’ve loved working with amazing local photographers, stylists and videographers in the lead up to the album release. READ MORE ONLINE

FASHION GIRL BEHIND THE NATION P.E Nation has carved out a niche for itself in an industry that has no signs of slowing down, writes Emmy-Lou McKean.

THERE IS NO question that Pip Edwards is one of the nation’s most influential women in fashion. With an impressive career in the industry as the creative mind behind iconic brands such as Ksubi, Sass & Bide and General Pants Co, it was a no brainer that Pip would go on to launch her own brand. As a stylist, creative director, designer and now co-founder of P.E Nation, it was only natural that when the athleisure brand released its first collection in March 2016, that it would sell out within hours of launching. We chat to the Bondi cool-girl about the brand, the vision and what’s next for P.E Nation. What lead you and your business partner, Claire Tregoning to start P.E Nation? It really all began with the realisation that my name-sake initials stood for Physical Education. This was all discussed over a long lunch, and it literally all unfolded from there. Once the name was locked in, it set the vision, what we stood for and what the product would be. Why did you choose active wear? Claire and I are naturally sporty and active, and our personal 34

style and aesthetic is street sport. So we really were designing to our own style and take. We knew that there was a lot active wear out there but still not a lot of choice. There was a lot of the same. To fuse active wear with street sport and give the look a street edge and play to how people are actually wearing it, was a new way presenting this category. What would you say to people who think the trend is ‘just a phase’? I would say that they obviously have not made that lifestyle choice and don’t understand that it’s a lifestyle shift and a global consciousness towards a more balanced, holistic, happy life. It ain’t a phase, it’s here to stay and progress and be a way of life. With nine successful collections to its name and no sign of slowing down, what can we expect to see next from P.E Nation? We are launching a yoga capsule, a denim capsule, and menswear range in the new year. With a major collaboration with Reebok already under your caps, do you have any exciting partnerships in the works? We also

Founders of P.E Nation Pip Edwards and Claire Tregoning

have a new era cap collab launching at the same time. There is another major collab with another heritage sports brand happening, but not until later into next year. You’ll have to watch this space for that one! What is your favourite thing about having your own brand? That we can keep the vision and stay true to our essence. It’s awesome to be able to control where the brand goes and what we do with it. I love working on ideas that I can actually make happen! READ MORE ONLINE

AHEAD OF THE PACK Tamille Head sits down with milliner Martina McGrath to talk all things Spring Racing. HER DESIGNS HAVE earned Brisbane-based milliner, Martina McGrath a herd of loyal fans, for her beautifully hand-crafted hats and fascinators. Combining the traditions of millinery and race wear with a modern twist and hint of whimsy, Martina shares the inside scoop. With Spring Racing Carnival approaching, what headwear trends are you seeing emerge? The boater will continue to be a strong trend this season. It’s such an easy hat to wear and you can play around with the proportions, which is really fun. I think we’ll see a lot of headbands adorned with crystals, pearls, metallic details and delicate florals. The trend I’m most excited about is the turban; I think we will see lots

QUEENSPLAZA IS CURRENTLY HOME TO BRISBANE’S MOST TALENTED MILLINERS! of different versions of the turban this season. Where do you get inspiration from for your designs? Everywhere! Textiles, colour, the runway…the list is endless. There are so many photos and screenshots on my iPhone, it’s ridiculous! Fashion wise, what will you be wearing come Spring Racing Carnival? I adore volume and colour in my clothing, which usually means I wear something quite pared back on my head. I will definitely wear a boater with a floral dress, or one of my beaded turban headbands with a jumpsuit

Martina McGrath

What should come first - the fascinator or the outfit? This is the question I am asked most often. The answer is to build your outfit around the piece that you fall in love with first; whether that be a dress, a pair of shoes, earrings or a hat. If your outfit is anchored by a piece you love, you will look and feel happy and confident. READ MORE ONLINE

I AM MOST INSPIRED WHEN I AM LEARNING AND EXPERIENCING SOMETHING NEW!

STAYING SIMPLE We chat to the founder of Frankie Swimwear, Rebecca Klodinsky about how she turned a simple idea into a multi-million dollar label, writes Emmy-Lou McKean. How did you come to start Frankie Swimwear? The light bulb moment for Frankie happened on an idle weekend afternoon in 2013 when my younger sister arrived home from a day of shopping. She was proudly showing me her new bikini that she had finished laybying and it was then that I felt something had to change. If my sister was laybying a bikini, surely she wasn’t alone. There had to be hundreds of girls out there doing it too. There was a hole in the market for great swimwear at happy prices. What inspires Frankie designs the most? I make travelling a really important part of my life. Not only to see the world, but to keep me inspired. I love visiting anywhere tropical and places rich with history. Two years ago, after a trip to Vegas with a friend, the glass blown ceiling in the Bellagio Hotel inspired a limited edition run of watercolour swimwear we released. I am most inspired when I am learning and experiencing something new. Describe your creative process? I take my time. I think about what I like and why. I don’t really follow trends, and instead I tend to create what is missing or what hasn’t been done. What’s your advice for someone looking to start their own business? Stay in your lane, and stay focused on your passion! Don’t worry about what others are doing, what they are achieving or who they know. Work on your craft and the rewards will come! 38

Who is the Frankie Swimwear girl? The Frankie girl is both your ‘girl next door’ and the woman you see on the E! channel. While our celebrity following is quite large, the Frankie girl is uncomplicated. She is sun-kissed and summer loving and never worries about what the time is. What is your favourite Frankie piece? My Frankie Swimwear Darling Bralette! It’s definitely my go-to bikini top and favourite everyday Bralette. Every time I wear it, I’m always conscious of how my customers might feel in it. Although the Darling Bralette is an iconic slice of Frankie Swimwear, it’s just so reliable and I love it! I wear the bralette with pride and I’m always so pleasantly surprised at how great they are.

“STAY IN YOUR LANE, AND STAY FOCUSED ON YOUR PASSION! DON’T WORRY ABOUT WHAT OTHERS ARE DOING, WHAT THEY ARE ACHIEVING OR WHO THEY KNOW.”

PERFECTLY PAIRED This luxury fashion retailer is going from strength to strength, writes Tamille Head. SINCE 1938, LIFESTYLE fashion brand Oroton has been a powerhouse in the industry. Producing a wide range of products for men and women including handbags, small leather accessories, sunglasses, jewellery, accessories, apparel and shoes, the brand is defined by its relaxed, modern Australian approach to luxury. Combining chic simplicity with that playful design essence that is unique to Oroton, the brand focuses on casual glamour and timeless style. Oroton has recently partnered with a host of some of the most successful bloggers in the industry to produce a range of leather bag straps. Collaborating with the likes of Elle Ferguson, Carmen Hamilton and Geneva Vanderzeil has seen the heritage brand’s popularity grow even further. Brisbane girl Geneva Vanderveil, of hugely successful DIY fashion and travel blog, A Pair and A Spare, was one of the talented bloggers approached by Oroton to design a leather bag strap. Now based in Hong Kong, Geneva jumped at the chance to collaborate with the heritage brand. “I absolutely love the design process, so when Oroton approached me to work with them on stylemagazines.com.au

a collaborative product, I was really excited to be involved,” Geneva says. “It’s always so satisfying to create something from scratch like this. There’s always a lot of challenges and logistics but it’s that sort of detailed process I like to be involved in.” Not a stranger to designing – Geneva creates weekly DIY projects on her website - it’s a process that she had 100% creative control over. “I worked with the design team throughout the process to make sure the finished product was perfect,” she says. As for the inspiration behind her design, Geneva focused on two things. Her affinity with nautical style and the pull she feels towards tan leather goods. She then worked to bring these aspects together in a way that would be both pretty and practical. “It’s always a little daunting when you’re creating a design for a big, iconic brand like Oroton – you want to stay true to their heritage but also inject your design with all the elements that make you, you. There were lots of reject ideas, but that’s all part of the process,” Geneva explains.

DESIGNERS IN PARADISE

GEO STATES, “BRISBANE IS MY BIRTHPLACE AND WAS MY HOME DURING THE INCEPTION

Cat and Geo describe their daily rituals as Brisbane creatives building their brands in Bali, writes Annabelle Beirne. HAVE YOU EVER thought about packing up your life in Brisbane and moving to a place where the summer is endless? Both Cat Henesey-Smith and Geo Moriarty did exactly that. How did the decision to move to Bali come about? CAT: Ever since I came on my first holiday here I knew I could see myself living here. The job came about while I was on a six month solo travel adventure in Europe so I quickly flew home and packed up my things! Never looked back. How do you find youself waking up in the morning? GEO: I don’t wake up here - I get woken up! By puppies pawing at my face or playing tug of war with my hair. So the first thing

OF MY BRAND. WHEN I LOOK BACK NOW, I CAN

I do is plead with them to give me another few minutes of sleep... then give in and take them outside and soak up the bird sounds and warm Bali air. Typical outfit for a day in Bali? GEO: Depends on the day, but my universal rule is, the more low maintenance the better. If I’m not riding my scooter that day I’ll throw on one of my mini smocks over a bikini, otherwise it’s a vintage t-shirt and some well-cut denim. At sunset (coconut sipping time) I’ll throw on my favourite crochet dress and some fringed slides. How has Bali influenced your designs? GEO: Artistic flair and beauty is integral to the Balinese

culture and it’s inspiring to be around. Sometimes it’s grand but most of the time it is humble, like a homemade offering topped with incense and a flower laid carefully in the middle of a busy intersection with the intention of protecting all passers through. That’s so beautiful and it reminds me that the little details really matter. CAT: The most incredible thing about living in Bali is all of the creative people around you. Everyone has such an entrepreneurial mind-set and is doing their own thing which really pushed me to start my label. HENESII.COM GEOMORIARTY.COM

JUNK IN THE FRONT Back from the eighties and better than ever, the bumbag returns and it’s never looked so chic, writes Emmy-Lou McKean. THEY SAY THAT what goes around comes around and when a designer highlights a throwback accessory, the trend instantly becomes the new go-to statement piece that every it-girl puts into high rotation. If SS18 Fashion Week is anything to go by, it’s clear that the bumbag made it’s return from the eighties on both the street and the runway. And we’re not even mad about it. Gucci shut down the runway by incorporating sporty bumbags emblazoned with their iconic

interlocking GG logo that cinched in ethereal gowns at the hip. Closer to home, Zimmermann interprets the trend differently by channeling beachside vibes with a woven bumbag that is already at the top of every girl’s summer wish list. Whether it’s riding low on your hip, cinched at the waist or sitting high on your shoulder; rock the trend with confidence. READ MORE ONLINE

THAT FESTIVE FEELING

TALKING ABOUT WATER

UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS

FROM THE DECORATIONS to the celebrations, it’s time to start thinking about styling your Christmas and end of year festivities. Although the silly season is not yet upon us, in the styling world, thinking ahead will allow for a well-executed and managed strategy. Just think of the shock that would ensue if you left it too late and Santa was already booked for another event! Alongside traditional festive theming, neon palm prints and metallic furniture pieces are being used to create fresh summer designs – a perfect fit for Queensland’s climate. An emphasis on greenery and spaces that balance raw with luxe will continue to trend, with rich velvets and metallic tones working to achieve balance between traditional and contemporary. Enlisting the services of a stylist will ensure your Christmas-themed retail activations, event styling concepts, and shopfront displays are all planned and booked, enabling you to enjoy your first glass of eggnog whilst your vision remains on track for the festive season.

THE CHEMISTRY OF water is pivotal to coffees flavour. Within the specialty coffee industry, discussion of water quality often includes the effects of mineralistaion, alkalinity, sodium levels, chlorine, and other variables that all have a direct impact on the taste of coffee. Hard water that is full of minerals simply won’t bond well with the particle content from the coffee leading to an under extracted or dirty coffee flavour. Many studies acknowledge that different proportions of various dissolved solids affect the extraction and will affect that flavour of the coffee. The studies also determined that water softeners commonly increase the sodium content in water which alters the flavour of coffee. To improve the coffee quality you make at home, install a carbon filter to remove the chlorine, never reboil the water and do not use distilled water. If you are anything like us at Wolff Coffee Roasters you can create your own customised water for your coffee using innovative remineralisation kits.

WHEN IT COMES to relationships, unclear and unrealistic expectations stand above all else for the potential to harm your relationship. Unclear expectations can often be seen in the conversations couples have. It’s as if they expect their partner to be able to read their mind. In this instance, it is always a good idea to get clarification about what has been said. This way, you can both gain clarity. When it comes to unrealistic expectations, some partners expect miracles. They often expect their partner to ‘rescue’ them from their past and of course this will never happen. Take a look at your own history and see where you might be pulling that history into your relationship now. The best indicator may be your need for a spotless home, all the time. If there is a great deal of friction around this topic then check your expectations. Engaging a professional can help reset these expectations and create clearer and more realistic expectations.

FINISHING TOUCHES

AN ENCHANTING ENGAGEMENT

KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR VISION

SHOULD YOU BE wearing a male bracelet? The answer is not a simple yes or no. If you are in a creative industry, the only questions for you are which one and how many? The more bracelets the better. If you are in a more conservative industry, for example a lawyer or accountant, you need to consider if you want colourful beads and bracelets to be a distraction. If someone is distracted by your bracelet then they are not listening to what you are saying. For a conservative person, the bracelet needs to be subtle and refined. Colour coordinating your bracelet to your outfit is essential. If you don’t wear one 9 – 5 you can make a bracelet part of your weekend attire, remembering the bracelet should be a complementary accessory, not a hero. Your bracelet should have a meaning, research what the particular stone means and how this relates to you. If you want to wear them because they are considered cool, that is not a good reason.

AS WE AGE, we become more susceptible to developing age-related eye diseases such as macular degeneration, cataract and glaucoma. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) Scanning is used in the early detection and management of eye diseases. This scan allows your optometrist to see detailed images of the retina, enabling them to accurately detect, monitor and control changes to the retina. This procedure is currently the only one that shows in-depth images of the eyes internal structures. Other procedures only show the surface of these structures. The scan only takes minutes and the equipment never touches the eye so you will feel no discomfort. With OCT, these measurements of the distinctive layers thickness provide early diagnosis and treatment guidance for glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease. At Madonna Rigney Optometry we provide you with the best technology to ensure the best diagnosis and to improve your vision.

TWENTY-FOUR HOURS WITH BRENDAN CUMMINGS We find out how The Styled Group’s Creative Director, Brendan spends his day. 6:45AM Generally speaking, I get up just before 7am and most days will try and take my two dogs for a quick walk around the block. While I’m out, I’ll grab my morning coffee from Blockhouse, which is conveniently located just down the road from my house. I’ll fix myself a quick bowl of cereal or avo on toast. 8:30AM First up, I check in with each department in the company. I like to spend an hour or two each day with my stylist working on new visual merchandising projects and installations, or going over the proposals our stylists are working on. Usually, I will meet with two clients per day. 10:30AM Our weekly management meetings are a great chance for the creative team to work collectively on projects we have in the pipeline. 1:00PM I find if I haven’t eaten, I tend to lose focus so will either head up the road from our office for a quick salad or most often will schedule lunch meetings with existing

clients. Pony is a personal go-to for the main three: service, food and view. 3:30PM Late afternoons involve stopping in on job sites to make sure everything is running smoothly or catching up with private clients. 6:00PM Being in the events industry, it’s hard to officially have a finish time as most nights involve either attending industry events or checking out the latest venue, restaurant or event space. 6:30PM If I’m not attending an event or overseeing a job, I try to make time for Cross Fit at least three nights a week. My friends are a huge part of my life so I usually take them along with me to any afterhours events, otherwise it’s a quiet night in, unwinding by watching the odd trashy reality TV show. 7:30PM Dinner is usually on the go with canapés at an industry event or catching up with friends. 12:00AM Event styling is my passion, and I love every minute of my chaotic days. I try to make it a rule to be asleep by midnight.

FRESH IS BEST With covetable views and locally-sourced produce, Jellyfish Restaurant offers an unbeatable dining experience.

EXCLUSIVELY FRESH SEAFOOD FASTER AND FRESHER! FROM THE OCEAN, TO TRAWLER, TO JELLYFISH!

BOASTING ONE OF Brisbane’s most prime riverside locations and an impressive menu of locally-sourced seafood to match, Jellyfish Restaurant is the ideal spot to make the most of our warmer weather and sunny days here in the River City. With a reputation as the foremost fish restaurant in Queensland, the produce served at Jellyfish Restaurant is carefully selected from local fish mongers daily or flown in from live-catch suppliers. “We prefer small boats because they tend to look after the catch better and are less likely to have the fish lying under a tonne or two of others,” says Jellyfish owner, John Kilroy. “They spend less time at sea so the catch gets to us faster and fresher.” Jellyfish is the only seafood restaurant in Australia that offers 8-14 species of fresh fish

daily, flown in to the restaurant exclusively from throughout Australia. If it is unique and interesting, you’ll find it at Jellyfish. “We buy from farms and impeccable practices which can be seen in the quality of its fish,” John says. All of this is accompanied by an impressive selection of beverages. By the glass or from the cellar, the extensive wine list is sure to step your dining experience up a notch. No other restaurant offers what Jellyfish does. Open for lunch Monday to Friday, dinner Monday

partyPERFECT Mastering NYFW If we learnt anything from the runways of New York Fashion Week, it’s that colour should be embraced this season, writes Tamille Head. OPPOSITES ATTRACT The age-old theory rings true when it comes to applying colour to your makeup look. To really make those peepers pop, look to the colour wheel and choose the shade sitting directly opposite your eye colour. “For blue eyes, opt for orange hues, coppers, bronzes and warm-based reds,” says Brisbane based makeup artist, Mia Connor. KEEP IT SIMPLE The biggest thing to remember when it comes to colour, is that less is more. Choose one feature such as lips or eyes, and make that the focal point, Mia says. “Whether it is a pop lip or a splash of colour in your eyeshadows, don’t do both!” DON’T BE AFRAID TO CLASH It’s a risk, but sometimes it just works. Throw all the rules you’ve been told about colour out the window. Think red lips with blue shadow on the eyes, as seen at Anna Sui. Take the hassle out of getting ready for your special event, by combining both fashion and beauty in one spot. With time and a lot of support from friends, family and her loyal clients, both businesses have grown and so the time came to blend the two businesses together in one place. Haute and Sole is now open in Newstead, offering a wide range of beauty services, such as eyelash extensions, feather brow tattoos, face waxing and makeup services and stocking an impressive line-up of Australian labels, including Thurley and Premonition Designs. GET GORGEOUS TOGETHER

Grab your partner, come in and share a cocktail, and get groomed together.

Next time you’re heading to the salon, why not drag your partner along with you? WITH OUR COCKTAIL bars at Brooklyn Beauty Bar, it’s so nice to see couples coming in for an after-work gin and tonic or a beer while getting his and hers, hers and hers, or his and his manicures. I love fellas who are confident and care enough about their appearance to have a manicure or pedicure, facial treatment or take care of that unwanted hair. Men don’t have quite the opportunity girls do of wearing make-up to enhance their appearance, so having good, clear skin and neatly groomed nails says a lot about a man. It says confidence, and attention to detail. Men particularly benefit from our Mini Herbal Peels which have no down time, are twice as

strong as microdermabrasion and clean out the sebaceous follicle (black heads). The skin instantly looks fresher and clearer. Getting rid of unwanted hair is also hugely popular with men. We know all the tricks in the book and are experts in this field to ensure a groomed but totally natural look, be it through means of threading, waxing or IPL. We’re talking equality at present in Australia

– let’s be equally gorgeous together. Grab your partner, come in and share a cocktail, some bubbles or a beer, listen to some cool music and get groomed together. SKIN SAVERS Siobhan Taylor explains why the biggest beauty trends, facemasks, might be the solution to your skincare woes. IT’S OFFICIAL: FACEMASKS are here to stay! No longer just for skincare connoisseurs and indulgent trips to the salon, facemasks are more versatile and accessible than ever before. Regardless of your skin concerns, there’s a formula out there for you. Perfect for everything from hydrating dry skin, plumping fine lines, and blurring scars, facemasks are the easiest way to level up your skincare regimen for optimal results. If you’re new to the world of masking or interested in learning more about the skincare trend that is dominating the industry, here’s everything you need to know before you add one to your skincare routine - from the best products to how to see results. Your face will thank you for it. BRIGHTEN YOUR COMPLEXION If your skin is feeling dull and lacklustre, a nourishing facemask might just be what you need. With nutrient-rich placenta extract as the key ingredient, the Mizon Bio Placenta Ampoule sheet mask delivers a powerful hit of nutrients and hydration for a brightened, even-toned, and more radiant complexion. stylemagazines.com.au

REHYDRATE AND REFRESH Ideal for irritated, wind-chapped, and dry skin, opt for formulas that have a gel-like consistency to instantly cool and hydrate. If you have sensitive skin, vitamin B5 is perfect for repairing damaged tissue while chamomile calms inflammation and redness. This is perfect for those with rosacea. FIGHT BLEMISHES Deep-cleansing clay and activated charcoal are ideal for blemish-prone skin as they absorb excess oil, gently exfoliate, and remove impurities – all at once! The Glam Glow Supermud Clearing treatment mask is a cult favourite. INCREASE ELASTICITY For visibly tighter skin that is uplifted and rejuvenated, opt for masks that have a serum-like texture. The Perricone MD H2 Elemental Energy Firming Foam mask is a gel-to-foam formula that plumps skin, while the La Mer Lifting and Firming mask lifts tired skin and firms and refines the face. LET’S GET PERSONAL Meet the businesswoman behind Hop & Cotton revolutionising the beauty industry, writes Tamille Head. WE PERSONALISE EVERYTHING from our stationary to our purses, so why not personalise the way we treat our skin. After all, no two faces are the same. After struggling to find suitable products to treat her individual skin concerns, cosmetic scientist and molecular biologist Ee Ting realised there was a gap in the skin care market. For a long time, she battled with sensitive and reactive skin, unable to find the right products to control her concerns. She began to feel self-conscious and her confidence took a beating. She set about finding the perfect products to treat her skin, but after ten long years, she came to the realisation that conventional, off-the-shelf products were not the answer. She needed something that was specifically created for her own

ILLUSTRIOUS GLOW

skin concerns. And so, Hop & Cotton was born. “Customisation is the answer for anyone who struggles like I did,” Ee says. “It is simply not viable for businesses to build every possible permutation to cover all skin types and conditions when developing a range. Hence, people that have difficult skin have to compromise with what is out there or continue looking for something else.” Customised skin care allows you to address all your skin concerns, while simplifying your beauty regime. No longer do you need a whole host of products for their individual benefits. “The extent of customisation that we do is complete, with each product formulated and made from scratch, not on a pre-made basis,” Ee explains.

Your best skin starts here. Hop & Cotton The Minimalist body moisturiser $68

“As every product is specifically made for you, we design them such that all your skin concerns are addressed in an efficient and streamlined routine, consisting of just three multi-tasking products.” So how does it all work? The best starting point is to complete a skin test via the hop&cotton website, to evaluate your skin and outline your concerns, before developing your simple 3-step regime.

EASING NEEDLE DISCOMFORT

TALKING JAW DEVELOPMENT

MASTERING CONCEALER

WHEN IT COMES to needles, we are often asked “How much do they hurt?” Because each individual experiences pain differently, it is difficult to give a precise answer. The needles used in sclerotherapy (a treatment for varicose veins) are extremely fine. They are a slightly larger gauge than an acupuncture needle but much smaller than vaccination needles. If the needle tip is not accurately placed inside the lumen of the vein then the injected sclerosant, rather than running through the vein, can spill outside the vein and cause tissue to expand. When this happens, slight pain can arise in the same way a boil does as a result of tissue expansion. Small amounts of spillage will always occur, but skilled sclerotherapists pay meticulous attention to this aspect of treatment. Some areas tend to be more sensitive, such as behind the knee and around the ankle. I always use the finest needles possible for these sensitive areas, and I make sure to select sclerosants that are least likely to cause pain.

WHEN I WAS a new mother, many years ago, I knew that breastfeeding was important for nutrition and immune protection. I happily chose to breastfeed each child for six months and then wean to formula and a bottle. I wish I knew then what I know now. Today I would do things differently. I would breastfeed exclusively for six months before introducing solids that the child could pick up with their fingers and put in their own mouth. I would continue to supplement the introduction of this real solid food (no puree) with continued breastfeeding until 12 months of age. An important law of nature is that form follows function. The strong muscular action of breastfeeding stimulates optimum development of the jaws. Jaws that develop to their genetic potential decrease the risk of SIDS and of developing chronic diseases later in life because our lifeline, our airway, is big enough to do its job. Jaw development is very important at James Street Dentists.

AS THE OLD saying goes, ‘less is more’, and this is no different when applying concealer. If you currently struggle to conceal dark circles under your eyes, or are forever failing at hiding fine lines, it might be time to alter your application technique. Firstly, it is important to recognise the condition of your skin. If the eye area is a little dry, you should use a small amount of moisturiser before applying your primer to smooth the surface. Then, use your concealer sparingly over the eye area, making sure to always blend outwards for a flawless finish. Next, apply your foundation before using your concealer again, but this time it will be to cover any blemishes; keeping it light and natural is the aim. At The Brow Bar, our Arch Angels are taught how to perfectly apply concealer, which they pass onto our clients. We recommend booking in with one of our Arch Angels to learn how to completely perfect the best concealer application, and so much more!

WHAT IS VERTIGO?

RADIANT, HEALTHY SKIN

STOP EXCESSIVE SWEATING

AROUND 30-50% OF migraine patients will sometimes experience dizziness or vertigo with their headaches. Migraine specialists now call this vestibular migraine. Vertigo provoked by moving scenes such as traffic, movies, or head movements can be another prominent feature. Many patients experience attacks both with and without a headache. In some patient’s, vertigo and headaches never occur together, and this can make the diagnosis of vestibular migraines challenging. Along with the vertigo, patients may experience light and noise sensitivity, which can help the migraine specialist establish the link to migraines. Triggers for vestibular migraines can be similar to those seen in more typical migraines such as menstruation, lack of sleep, stress, specific foods, bright lights or noise. If a diagnosis of a vestibular migraine has been established by a migraine specialist, treatment is available, with migraine prevention and attack treatment strategies frequently effective.

NOW THAT THE weather is warming up, it’s time to shed that winter veil and step out with radiant skin and a healthy glow. Adding serums to your beauty routine will make the biggest difference to the way your skin looks and feels. Unlike regular moisturisers and oils, serums can hold up to 70% of active ingredients that contain custom developed proprietary peptides that actively work to exfoliate, reduce fine lines, even skin complexion and renew skin cells at the cellular level. The key is to choose the serum that is purposely built for your specific skin concerns, whether you’re looking to even your skin tone, reduce fine lines or create firmer looking skin, there is a serum suited to you. As a general rule, adding serum loaded with Vitamin C to your morning routine will help brighten skin tone and boost your skin’s immunity. At night, apply serums loaded with Vitamins E & B. Drenching your skin with fast-acting serums is the perfect way to nourish, protect and bring vibrancy back to your complexion.

WE PERSPIRE MORE in hot weather, when we exercise, when we’re nervous or if we have a fever. But for some, sweating goes beyond the normal level, resulting in stained clothing, developing strong body odour and affecting self-confidence. Known as idiopathic hyperhidrosis, there is no known cause for the excessive sweating which affects three percent of the population. There are several treatment options available to control excessive sweating, including over-the-counter antiperspirants, prescription medications and Botox. A new system from the United States can help to reduce excessive sweating, known as miraDry and is now available at Westside Dermatology. Delivered under local anesthetic, miraDry uses electromagnetic or microwave energy to permanently reduce sweat glands. The procedure takes up to 30 minutes per armpit, destroying the glands so they will no longer produce sweat. Studies show excellent results of about 80% sweat reduction after two treatments.

NUTRITION AND PREVENTION

WELLNESS RETREATS

WHEN IT COMES to treating skin concerns, prevention is better than cure. The correlation between healthy eating and healthy skin goes hand in hand. The introduction of the Observ 520 in the beauty industry is a game changer. With the advanced camera technology, we can now see deep into the layers of the skin enabling greater understanding and evidence of underlying skin concerns. This powerful diagnostic knowledge allows clients to take both preventative and restorative action utilising the right products and skin treatments to truly benefit the skin. Nutrition is so important to maintain and support collagen and elastin function, and help with inflammatory responses that occur in our bodies. Anti-oxidants, which occur in berries and most vegetables are vital when it comes to taking care of our skin. A diet rich in essential fatty acids is important to help boost collagen and keep the skin hydrated. Essential fatty acids are found in salmon, walnuts, avocado and eggs.

LIFE GETS TOUGH and sometimes a rest away from it all is needed. From poor self-care, bad habits, emotional issues, or relationship challenges, life can wear you down. Simply getting away for a weekend by ourselves or with a friend can often be sufficient to replenish. When we are very depleted, a structured program at a specialist retreat is necessary. Quality wellness retreats are not about having a mani-pedi and a late check out after a sleep-in. Rather, retreats offer integrated holistic care provided by psychologists and counsellors, mindfulness and yoga teachers, nutrition experts, art and animal-assisted therapists, massage and personal training, and sometimes even farm work. Experiencing a range of interventions focusing on the mind, body and soul, for a couple of weeks is often sufficient for significant recovery. The lasting benefit, however, is that you’ll develop a wellbeing plan to prevent burnout and enjoy life to the max!

FLORA AND WELLNESS From dragon plants to fiddle-leaf figs, indoor greenery is the accessory du jour. INDOOR PLANTS MIGHT have more than just decorative value – it seems they might actually be improving the way we work and live. According to a 2016 Harvard study, that fiddle-leaf fig your cat loves to tip over is actually benefiting your health and well-being. A key finding was that, over an eight-year period, there were fewer deaths among women who lived in greener surroundings, resulting in a mortality rate 12 per cent lower than those living in areas devoid of leafy companions. It may not be particularly surprising that plants physically improve our living areas – after all, they keep our air clean – but the study goes further to suggest that greenery can improve mental health and brain function. Indoor plants arouse feelings of pleasure, calm and relief, which all contribute to an uplifting environment. In workplaces and study areas, visual contact with nature can reduce fatigue associated with intense concentration. Dubbed “nature breaks”, this replenishment can help you refocus, feel more positive and minimise stress and anger. Plants have also been seen to improve productivity within the workplace, with one study showing workers in a plantpimped office can be up to 12 per cent more productive. From improving our health, lowering stress and keeping us productive, plants are singular in the way they improve our surroundings while also looking beautiful. Keeping and growing indoor plants doesn’t have to be a horticultural horror. Plants such as devil’s ivy, Chinese evergreen and philodendrons are gorgeous and flourish with minimal maintenance. When selecting your greenery, Oxley Nursery provides expert advice to help you select the best plant for your lifestyle. From succulents to heliconias, this nursery is a green-thumb’s dream. Add a decorative pot, natural lighting and a cup of tea, and you might just experience nirvana. READ MORE ONLINE

Time rolls to a stop in these quaint Mediterranean towns, and the crisp wines and rich meals are best enjoyed as you take in sunsets unrivalled in beauty.

VALLETTA, MALTA Home of a Unesco World Heritage Site and the imposing 16th-century Saint John’s Co-Cathedral, Valletta has been beautifully preserved. A vibrant cultural revitalisation in recent years has fused the rich history of this town with modern art and culture.
