Wardrobe Hangs with Jules Jackson We caught up with Westfield Chermside fashion stylist Jules Jackson to have a peek inside her polished wardrobe.

A

CONFIDENCE IS THE MOST INTEGRAL ACCESSORY”

$20 dress can look a million bucks if it’s worn correctly and, likewise, Jules Jackson has been helping people become more confident and refined versions of themselves for more than 20 years. Her roots in fashion began at the age of 14 and has evolved into a personal style that nails modern classic to rocker chic depending on her mood. A well-tailored jacket is her go-to for a flattering look that will elevate any outfit, and one of her favourites for this season is a white classic from Country Road, or the black and white striped jacket from Cue for a statement piece. Jules believes it’s not what you wear but how you wear it and has established a three-step process to helping clients rock their look. First, she establishes the client’s unique personal style, before figuring out what will suit their lifestyle and be most effortless. She then finds clothes that not only complements their body shape, but also brings them joy, as “confidence is the most integral accessory,” she says. Jules’ secret is helping maximise her client’s wardrobe options all within their budget. Her biggest tip for splurging? Shoes. “You will always feel good in them and your size never changes!” she says. Jules’ top pick for the summer season is bold patterning such as the Tony Bianco Preston snake print heels or the animal print Jo slides from Seed. In a sunlit studio, creative director Fabienne lovingly designs each delicate award-winning piece, so it’s no wonder YCL Jewels has become a much-loved artisanal Australian brand. Where did your career start? I’ve been making jewellery since I was 13. When I was 20, I went to a market where I saw a local designer selling her jewellery and I could not get the thought of making and selling my own jewellery out of my mind. So, I left my secure job in nursing and decided to pursue my love of jewellery making full‑time. Where does your passion stem from? Simply my desire to create every day. I also believe in living a fulfilling and purposeful life. YCL, design and jewellery making is my passion and gives me great purpose in life.

My favourite artists right now are Frank Ocean, Leonard Cohen, Solange, Kanye, Brockhampton, Mallrat, Perfume Genius, Ariana (Grande) and The Blaze. I feel like Cub Sport probably sits somewhere in the middle of all of those influences. Go-to song for pre’s? It would probably be Limousine, it’s got some serious house vibes.

T

wo thousand and nineteen has been a massive year for Brisbane band Cub Sport and Tim Nelson, Zoe Davis, Sam ‘Bolan’ Netterfield and Dan Puusaari have become iconic names in the Australian music scene. Formally known as ‘Cub Scouts’ (a play on the fact they looked like children) until they hit a legal bump, unfortunately sounding too familiar to Scouts Australia, they eventually landed on the name we all

know and love; Cub Sport. They are local liberators, twisting tunes for equality and sharing their love of doggos. With their two upcoming sets at Lost Paradise and Beyond the Valley over New Years, we’ve got the inside muso news for you. From empowering lyrics to challenging tunes, expect their new music to be released before the end of the year! We sat down with lead singer, Tim, to talk band life, music magic and Cub Sport secrets. OCTOBER 2019

Favourite location to play at in Brisbane? We’ve played at The Tivoli twice on our Australian tour in April and it was such a dream come true. The Riverstage is one of my fave Brisbane venues too, I’m excited for the day when we headline there. Craziest story while touring? It’s not really that ~crazy~ but we’ve had a bunch of people come to shows with presents for our dogs Missy and Evie. It’s so cute! Now they have toys from all around the world. Favourite artist right now? Frank Ocean - it’s always Frank Ocean and probably always will be. His voice, his lyrics, the production, the fact that he’s queer. Must-have tour item? Bolan and I bring a little pouch of our smaller crystals on the road with us! Future plans? World domination! We’re gonna keep releasing music, touring, making videos - keep doing it all ‘til we’re playing to thousands of people around the world.

LOVE

How did he propose? A full day of special activities that reflected our first dates. It started off at Oxford 152 in Bulimba where we had our first date, Jason even putting on the shirt he wore on that date. The day ended at the Pullman hotel where Jason had made a photo album with pictures from an overseas trip we had just taken with the last page being a photo of our dog Dougie with a sign around his neck saying “Will you marry dad?”. Ceremony and reception venue? The Garden Marquee, Victoria Park Wedding Venue Describe the location and why you chose it… Victoria Park is such a beautiful location and the staff were on the ball and so easy to work with in the lead up to our wedding. The Garden Marquee has floor to ceiling glass windows looking out towards the parklands and with the city in the background, it is magical. We loved holding our ceremony on the Garden Marquee’s deck, then moving inside for our sit-down reception. Funniest moment? We were so lucky that all our plans and days leading up to the wedding went so smooth. My uncle drove me, my dad and sister in the bridal car. We were staying only five minutes’ drive from Victoria Park but neither my uncle nor dad knew the directions. We went up a wrong street which was a dead end. Where did you honeymoon? A week away in Port Douglas at the Pullman resort. A relaxing week with stunning weather. VICTORIA PARK WEDDING VENUE 309 HERSTON ROAD, HERSTON P 3252 0666 VICTORIAPARK.COM.AU/WEDDINGS/

ecently heading up the kitchen at Stokehouse in Melbourne, this exceptional chef is swapping the south city life for plenty of sunshine with a return home to Brisbane. A passionate foodie and lover of fresh produce, Hansford has been surrounded by fabulous fare most of his life thanks to his family. Growing up working with his dad amongst a sausage factory and pâté business at London’s Borough Market, he knew at just 14 that food was going to be his future. “I would help make the sausages, link them and get them packed, as well as make the pâté and see how fresh produce gets turned into this delicious unique product,” he says. scene and cool climate cooking, Hansford explains there’s no doubt that Brisbane is making its mark when it comes to quality produce and tasty no-fuss venues. “I really see a push in more relaxed venues in the Brisbane food scene that gives the customer the power in their dining habits. The high-end venues are becoming less and there is a drive to push for venues with knowledgeable staff, relaxed environments, and great food and wine,” he says. Stokehouse Q is set to serve up not just phenomenal food with fresh local Queensland ingredients, but the wholesome expertise from Hansford from his years of cooking and creating. “The menu will be one that encapsulates the local produce around the venue as well as showcasing Australia’s finest seafood. The food will be light, zesty and clean with a good hit of citrus allowing for a light but fulfilling dining experience,” he says.

ARTS

A NEW SIGHT OF

PERSPECTIVE

We sat down with the founder of Beernuts Productions on the Gold Coast who is calling cut on society’s blind ignorance when it comes to the film industry, and people with a disability. Hi Gough, tell us a little about Beernuts Productions... It is an independent production company I started in 2006 on the Gold Coast. I released my first feature film, a documentary about disability and mental health in 2010 and since then have created 16 short films, nine comedy audio downloads and written five books.

people, which helps me write my scripts because I know how people speak. It also helps when directing actors because I pay close attention to their tones and inflections to ensure they deliver the lines right. I’m sure we’ve all been to a party where someone is telling a joke so badly you wish they’d stop. I make sure that doesn’t happen on my film shoots.

Your personal journey is incredible being the first legally blind person to achieve so much at a production company unassisted. How did it happen? Before Beernuts Productions began, I spent years trying to get scripts produced. I travelled all over the world and met with producers, networks, distributors and private investors but once they found out I couldn’t see, their interest dried up. I was left with a simple choice: I could leave these scripts on the shelf or I could make them myself. So, I gathered up all my savings and bought some basic film equipment to make my first film.

Do you have a support network around you when you’re dealing with certain challenges? On set I have a sighted guide, Simon, who I have worked with for 15 out of the 17 films I’ve done.

Could you explain how being legally blind affects your work? Not being able to see means I’ve spent a lifetime listening to 38

What do you think is the biggest stigma towards someone with a disability? Just a general lack of understanding. There is still a lot of negative stigma that goes along with a disability and of course that leads to discrimination and segregation, and to people having problems with their mental health due to being excluded and not being given a “fair go” (I hate that phrase). More needs to be done to educate the wider community about disabilities and what folks with a disability can do. BEERNUTSPRODUCTIONS.COM

Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Grittypretty.com, Eleanor Pendleton is one of the most influential and refreshing beauty entrepreneurs in Australia. With an aim to educate and inspire women about their skin care, her no bull approach delivers honest content from inside the industry. We sat down with Eleanor to get an inside peek behind the beauty. Sum up a typical day for you at Gritty Pretty? There is no such thing as a typical day, which is one of the things I love most about my career. If my day doesn’t start with a beauty product launch/media breakfast, I’ll head straight to Gritty Pretty’s office and WIP with my team. Throughout the day, I’ll usually attend several editorial/content meetings, meet with beauty publicists, interview a beauty expert and/or celebrity or be on set of a Gritty Pretty beauty shoot. If I don’t have an afternoon or evening beauty product media event, I’ll head to a reformer pilates class before going home. Favourite project to date? Oh gosh, there’s been too many to count! Most recently, I was in Paris with CHANEL for Gritty Pretty’s first-ever Paris cover shoot with Australian actress, Phoebe Tonkin. After our shoot, Phoebe and I got on a cruise boat and sailed down the River Seine. Phoebe’s fellow CHANEL ambassador Kristen Stewart was on board and the entire experience was such a pinch me moment!

Before you were a beauty editor you wish you knew…? Start really looking after your skin from 17-18 years of age or once hormonal changes occur. And, drink plenty of water! Can’t stop watching/listening to/reading? Watching: ABC’S Old People’s Home For 4 Year Olds. Listening: Offline, The Podcast and Australian Birth Stories Podcast. Reading: Becoming by Michelle Obama.

THE SAGITTARIUS IN ME LOVES TO WANDER THE WORLD!”

Where do you seek inspiration from? I get a lot of inspiration when I travel – from the architectural surrounds, nature and people around me. The Sagittarius in me loves to wander the world!

Signature scent? I’m currently pregnant and my sense of smell has completely changed. Prior to falling pregnant, Le Labo Santal 33 and Frederic Malle Portrait of a Lady were some of my go-tos. Now, I can’t wear either. My current favourite fragrance is Juliette Has A Gun Not A Perfume.

One fashion brand to wear for the rest of your life? Albus Lumen. Something people wouldn’t know about you? As a young girl, I learned how to sail yachts and how to play the piano. Top 3 can’t live without beauty products? SK-II Facial Treatment Essence, Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Serum and Ultra Violette Supreme Screen SPF 50+ Hydrating Sunscreen.

When you’re flying you’re carrying... Lip balm, face spray and a clear leave-on mask such as Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask. Last place you travelled to? I just returned from Sri Lanka. What are you working on next? We are very excited to be organising Gritty Pretty’s annual makeup masterclasses held in Brisbane (October 3) and Sydney (October 10). They’re our biggest events of the year and we couldn’t be more excited!

osmetic surgery has seen many different forms over the years that all come in various shapes and prices. Traditionally, implants have been a popular choice, but in recent times patients are becoming increasingly concerned about the long-term risks of artificial substances implanted in their bodies. If you want the same stellar results without the added risks of synthetic materials, the latest developments in the cosmetic world provide a much more natural option. Cosmétique is home to some of Australasia’s most skilful surgeons with experience in fat transfer procedures. Fat transfer involves removing fat from one part of your body and transferring it to another area that needs volumising. Since the fat is already native to the body, there is minimal risk of rejection with the procedure carrying a lower complication profile compared to its traditional silicone-based counterpart. Cosmétique’s Dr Vivek Eranki says “we frequently remove fat from stubborn areas such as lower abdomen, love handles and thighs, then inject it into areas that need further volume,” he says. “Given that the transplanted fat is natural to the body, fat transfer produces lasting results.” The most common areas to inject fat are breasts, buttocks, hands and the face, with STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

@STYLEMAGAZINES

the most popular surgery being the Brazilian Butt Lift. This surgery involves removing fat from persistent areas and injecting it into the backside. This improves the projection of the hips and backside while having the added benefit of removing fat from places where patients don’t want it. At Cosmétique, surgeons use special instruments and modified techniques to make the surgery extremely safe. When doing your research, make sure your Surgeon has appropriate training in cosmetic procedures from organisations such as The Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgeons (ACCS). ACCS is the peak body for Cosmetic Medicine and Surgery in Australia. “At Cosmétique, many of our surgeons hold multiple fellowships specific to Cosmetic Surgery and by constantly attending international conferences, our surgeons are able to utilise the latest in techniques and technology to improve patient outcomes” Dr Eranki says. Fat transfer surgery does not require an overnight stay after the procedure and all patients get a 24/7 phone number to contact after the surgery. Cosmétique understands that surgery can be daunting, so all aftercare following the surgery is free regardless of how many times patients attend. ON THE Right Foot If high heels are getting you down, The Leg Vein Doctor is here to help you trot into the racing season. With Melbourne Cup on the horizon, the party season is galloping towards us and for many women that will mean wearing high heels more often than usual. A U.S. study compared the venous blood pressure in the legs of women walking on a treadmill with highheeled shoes and without. Normal walking coordinates the foot and calf pump and when the foot is off the floor, the foot veins fill with blood. As the heel and arch of the foot contact the floor, the blood flows into the relaxed calf veins. The calf muscles then contract which propels blood up the deep veins.

High heels change the natural walking motion, shifting the weight to the fore foot and toes and causing the calf muscles to remain contracted. This results in a decrease in the filling of the foot and calf veins and a less forceful calf muscle pump. This loss of efficiency causes pooling of venous blood in the leg. Hence some people suffer with swelling and heaviness or even restless leg symptoms at night. If you have a predisposition for varicose veins such as a family history, then wearing heels may aggravate the symptoms. You don’t

DR. NICHOLAS KEMP

have to stop wearing heels, but you should be aware of what you are doing. Make an effort to stretch your calf muscles throughout the day to ensure good blood flow in the legs and mix up your footwear – give your legs a break! Remember to keep active and walk at least 30 minutes a day to ensure your calves are pumping blood back up the system. Your [real] party-ready

skincare guide WITH MICHELE SQUIRE

Don’t fall for the hype – Dr Michele Squire shares the best tips to party prep your skin. With the festive season arriving, I’m often asked how to whip skin into shape ASAP. There’s no such thing as an instant fix, and the wrong moves may leave your skin worse. The solution lies in fixing your routine basics and managing your expectations. Good skin takes time but with consistency, you should notice results within a few months. • Cleanse twice daily with a mild, non-foaming cleanser to remove excess debris clogging pores. Ingredients like vitamins or acids in your cleanser are unnecessary because they’re not on your face long enough to work. 52

|

• Moisturisers are vital in making your skin soft and hydrated. Don’t buy into the miracle cream hype – most beneficial effects are from simple moisturising ingredients rather than expensive ‘active’ ingredients. • Sunscreen is the least sexy but most effective weapon against ageing. Daily exposure to UV rays causes most signs of aged skin so applying the correct amount of high factor sunscreen every day is key to your party glow. • Glow-getting add-ons: gentle, leave-on chemical exfoliants, vitamin C, hydrating sheet masks, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide serums introduced gradually with a week between new products. • What to avoid: harsh scrubbing contributes to dry, dull skin. Now is not the time to start STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

All things in moderation

Racing season

Barista tools

With the latter part of the year filled with social occasions like the Melbourne Cup, spring and summer parties, work functions, and Christmas and New Year events, increasing self-control and discipline are often considered desirable. To exercise restraint, one needs to have a strong, internalised, personal reason why. Whether you are determined to develop better relationships, eat healthier, save additional money, feel more energetic, increase productivity, sleep longer, live in accordance with your values or learn new skills, these are all potentially strong motivators for making changes to your choices. Thinking where you’ll be in a few years without changes can enhance your resolve and supplement willpower. Wanting things to change but continuing to do everything we like will not bring us closer to our desired outcome. Remembering when we’ve made changes before can be motivational, and visualising how we did it can be instructive. It’s never too late to be balanced better.

Look your best this racing season by knowing the rules. For the Caulfield Cup, a jacket and tie are essential but you can opt for chinos and a jacket instead of a suit. Try a textured tie or bow tie and a different colour with a pattern shirt for a change. Derby Day is quite traditional, which means classic styles in black and white with the possibility of grey. Consider a contrasting double-breasted waistcoat instead of a black suit. For the Melbourne Cup, a suit, tie, and leather shoes is a must. Embrace spring with light navies, darker tans and mid greens, and use lightweight fabrics with a beautiful fall. Don’t be afraid to use linen/wool blends and try texture to create a casual aesthetic. Oaks Day is associated with pastels and is the day to have more fun and personality. Think statement jackets with bold patterned shirt combinations or an unstructured jacket. For Stakes Day consider tailored separates and try a lighter tan, off-white or sky-blue jacket with a darker coloured chino.

I am often asked how I brew my coffee at home and I have so many answers. These days there are so many amazing apparatuses to brew a good cup of coffee at home. From coffee barista tools to get you started, like Moccamaster, Chemex, V60 or Aeropress Brewers to a huge range of espresso machine accessories to take you all the way to World Barista Championships such as Reg Barber Tampers and Kruve Sifter Pro + Pack – the options are seemingly endless. Popular now is the Comandante C40 Hand Grinder, Stagg Kettle EKG and the Espro range. These are perfect gifts for the coffee enthusiast who loves experimenting with new coffee toys, not to mention a wide selection of Single Origin or Blends available for filter style brewing or espresso machine. For those wanting a quick no fuss delicious brew why not try Instant Wolff; an instant Specialty Coffee available in small batches of 60g jars that is still just as big on flavour.

How many times have you been in conversation with family and friends and you zone out, completely tuning out whatever they are saying? Though this happens to all of us from time to time, it is important to recognise if and when it seriously hinders the communication you have in your relationships. Ask yourself: how much attention do you give the people you love? Being a good listener not only helps you when you’re in your Monday meetings, but also in the closeness between you and your partner. Most people do not listen with the intention of understanding, but just to reply. We speak to hear our own voice and merely wait to add something of value. Improving your listening skills is a well-kept secret in cultivating a thriving relationship. With a truly equal back-andforth, both parties are enriched with a dialogue that means more. For more help learning to listen, seek the counsel of a professional relationship coach at PBR Coaching.

Despite what some may think, we are never too old for braces! You should never have to hide your smile, and it has become commonplace for adults to seek advice regarding their crowded mouths, crooked teeth and narrow smiles. Some adults didn’t have the opportunity when they were younger to have braces and some adults find their once beautiful smiles have become crooked again. No matter your age, there’s always an orthodontic solution for you. There are more types of systems nowadays that align and straighten teeth than ever before, so you are not just limited to your run of the mill braces. This makes having braces as an adult much easier, less daunting and in some cases, speeds up the process so you can look and feel your best as soon as possible. James Street Dentists offer orthodontic care so don’t hesitate if you’d like to chat about adult braces and your options to have a smile you never want to conceal.

During party time there’s a lot to think about and your wardrobe choices may be determined by your venous health: do you drop your hemline to cover that patch of spider veins? Or book a spray tan to camouflage the varicose vein on your shin? Let’s face it, even sheer tights weren’t made for Brisbane summer! It might be too late for this year but you can still take action. Be proactive and book in for an initial consultation, which includes a medical examination and ultrasound investigation. Most patients require multiple sessions over a few months for optimal results. From start to finish, you’ll be taken care of with a year of complimentary reviews to ensure successful treatment. At your initial consultation you’ll be given a treatment plan that is valid for 12 months. Book in advance to choose treatment days or after hours appointments so you can best accommodate for commitments. All our treatments are walk in/walk out so you can dance your way off to the next function!

BABY, PLASTIC SURGERY with Dr Matthew Peters

Body contouring

Short sight

A large part of my practice is body-contouring surgery. By removing excess skin and fat, as well as tightening adjacent muscle and skin layers, I am able to correct both functional and aesthetic concerns people have with their appearance. Pregnancy is a common cause for concern and is often treated with abdominoplasty surgery, which removes the stretched skin and repairs any muscle separation that is present. This improves not only the appearance, but can also improve low back pain and stress incontinence. Massive weight loss through diet and exercise alone or in conjunction with bariatric surgery causes similar concerns across a wider range of body areas. Procedures exist for correction and can often be combined to minimise down time. For the breasts, augmentation, reduction and lift techniques exist to address any issues and for the men, similar techniques can be utilised to overcome gynaecomastia. Book an appointment at Valley Plastic Surgery to discuss how we can help.

Myopia or short sightedness is a common eye problem worldwide and the rate is increasing. In some cases, progression or worsening of myopia can occur from childhood into early adulthood and this can lead to a higher risk of other eye problems including glaucoma, cataract, macular degeneration, retinal tears and crossing of the eyes (strabismus). Simple things that might prevent worsening of myopia include increasing time spent enjoying outdoor activities and regularly updating glasses or contact lenses. Also, a specifically compounded eye drop used in each eye at night has been shown to slow down myopia. However, before commencing treatment with these eye drops, eye checks are required to ensure they are suitable. These generally involve testing visual acuity, checking the overall power of the eyes, measuring the length of the eyes, and performing a thorough dilated examination to check for problems that can be associated with myopia.

UNFILTERED Brisbane readers share their stories about the good, the complicated and everything in between. This month, we discuss: public vs. private school.

PUBLIC

PRIVATE?

A

s a private schooler myself, the whole public-school concept seems really daunting and foreign to me. Call me naïve but the idea of co-ed will never sit well with me! I’m really thankful that we are lucky in Australia to have a fair Government that gives everyone an equal opportunity to education and I’m also very

THE GRASS MIGHT BE GREENER

I

went to a private school for all 12 years of my schooling. There is no doubt it was a fantastic PART OF experience and I’ll be forever ME WISHES thankful to my parents for sacrificing huge amounts of I WENT TO money to get me there and A PUBLIC making sure I was graced SCHOOL.” with opportunities at every turn. I definitely think private school has advantages, whether or not the money spent to get your child into one is worth the advantages or not, is definitely subjective. My parents always stressed that YES, going to a private school is supposed to grace you with opportunities and a fantastic education (that you might not otherwise get in the public system), and I believe that to a degree, but it is most importantly about the connections you make during your time at school because after all it’s about WHO you know, not WHAT you know. Ultimately, sometimes I wish I had gone to a public school. I guess I traded the lack of publicschool experiences by submersing myself into skateboarding where people from all walks of life participate. Sure, the quality of the education might be better, but it still doesn’t make you better than someone who came from public school.

THE SET IN STONE

respectful that some people may not have a choice between private and public. My concern is the stigma around ‘dole bludgers’ and people who wrought the system by sending their children to public schools. If I did have a choice, I certainly wouldn’t be exposing my children to an environment like that. As controversial as it may be, I truly believe that sending your child to a private school is giving them a step forward in the door of life.

I

THE PROGRESSIVE went to an elite inner-city Brisbane private girls school from year one right ‘til year 12. I had an ok experience, but I didn’t necessarily fit in. The education and opportunities were good, but I felt that they only catered for one type of learner and the curriculum needed serious updating. Based on this experience, my preference would be to send my children to a Montessori or a Steiner School in primary and then a State High School for secondary school as I think this would nurture their intellect more and they would therefore be more socially balanced.

THE UNDERSTANDING

I

went to both a public co-ed high school (grade 8 & 9) and then a private girl’s school (grade 10-12). I was a bit wayward in my earlier years and would’ve probably finished school after grade 10 (like my older sister did) had we not moved across town and my parents decided on a private school for both me and my younger sister and brother. As it turned out, my grades improved at the private school and I had a very fulfilling time in my last years of high school, quite happy to continue on to senior. When my son got to high school age, I wanted him to have a similar experience at a private school so enrolled him in an all

I WANTED MY SON TO HAVE THE SAME EDUCATION THAT I DID.” boy’s school – which he absolutely detested and was suspended several times over the two years he was there. Finally, I enrolled him in the same public co-ed high school where his grades improved and he became a much happier teenager – which in turn, made me a happier parent! The bottom line is, it doesn’t really matter the type of school you go to, it’s all about the child and the environment they’re exposed to. The most important thing is that the student and parents are both happy with whatever choice is made – if the student is happy, they thrive and grow no matter what school they go to.

ppearing over the shoreline as we approach the island of Can Tho sits the resort Azerai. Covering over eight hectares with 60 opulent rooms, the resort boasts instant charm and enchanting architecture. Azerai Resort Can Tho is something to behold. Its traditional architecture has been interpreted in a contemporary light to perfectly mix history with modernity. A notable example is the centrally located 31-metre infinity pool, which was our first stop to

The spa was delightfully inviting, beckoning for us to continue our indulgence. hues. The entire body left feeling completely invigorated after the tropical rain shower, sauna, steam room, drenching shower and ice treatment. There were plenty of dining choices in the resort, including The Café offering an all-day menu featuring regional and international comfort foods, with a keen focus on fresh, local ingredients and flavours which can be enjoyed while taking in the view of the magnificent swimming pool. Breakfast drew aromas from traditional Vietnamese dishes such as beef and chicken pho, as well as international menu staples like pancakes, pastries and seasonal fresh fruit. Yet, it was dinner that truly impressed with a tapas-style menu encouraging social dining. For dinners we opted for a more formal experience and enjoyed the surrounds of Grill Restaurant, beneath a canopy of banyan trees. Their specialty menu showcased locally caught and sourced crustaceans, fish, beef and poultry, with sides of fresh seasonal salads, organic vegetables and house-made sauces and condiments as well as traditional Vietnamese dishes. Beyond the indulgent quarters of Azerai Resort we explored the Mekong Delta. A visit to Can Tho is not complete without an excursion to the famous Cai Rang Floating Market, which starts at 4am and is a buzzing affair until 11am as over 100 boats full of fresh produce and homeware vendors gather to make a sale to tourists and locals alike. The pineapples were to die for and the thought of the Bánh Mì (baguette) stuffed with pork sausage, vegetables and topped with condiments of French derivation still makes my mouth water.

Other stops on the tour included visiting various working businesses such as a local fruit orchard, a traditional noodle-making house, and the historic Huynh Thuy Le Ancient House, which was featured in the 1992 film adaptation of Marguerite Duras’ bestselling novel ‘The Lover’. These visits were particularly humbling. Can Tho is where you will experience the hard-working Vietnamese lifestyle away from the big cities and unwind in true local hospitality and culture.

THE SYDNEY TOWN Sydney is fast-becoming a second home for Style Editor, Tracy Sinclair. Working with clients for our Style Media creative agency takes her and our talented team to the big smoke regularly, and now she’s spilling the beans on her favourite haunts.

I love this store in Bondi and I’ll always try to fit a quick speedshop in when I’m in town. They have all of my favourite brands under one roof, so it’s convenient, and stock is always changing. Also, in the same street, you’ll find Lucy Folk and Free People boutiques. TUCHUZY

SEFA KITCHEN

@TOTTISBONDI

TOTTI’S Also on Bondi Road, in the Royal Hotel, is Totti’s, my favourite spot to catch up with my son and his partner who are Bondi locals. It’s relaxed Italian and the uncomplicated, flavoursome food makes my heart sing. I could quite happily live on the wood-fired bread, burrata and sardines. They take walk ins, but best to book on busy nights.

Meze dining at its best in a cosy, intimate restaurant on Bondi Road. I was going to say its Mediterranean food but when I googled to check, its actually what they call Levantine cuisine. Levant is the Mediterranean part of the Middle East (think Jordan, Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria and Cyprus). The food is sensational, and bookings are essential.

HOTEL RAVESIS

@HOTELRAVESIS

THE CORNER HOUSE Back up off Bondi Road, the Corner House does beautiful Italian and Mediterranean food, especially their pizzas. It’s multi-level bar and dining, quite intimate and perfect for a quiet catch up over a nice wine or cocktails (gooood cocktails might I add!). A sure thing to add to your Bondi Road sip and stroll (read: bar crawl) as there’s a load of great bars in its vicinity. 66

@STYLEMAGAZINES

I really dig the vibe and decor of this hotel in the heart of Bondi which also has a couple of great bars (spot the influencers and NRL footy players). The light-filled rooms are retro in style (so a little old school) and it’s a 3.5 star. So, if you’re fussy about your hotel rooms, choose carefully. Opt for the direct view of the beach to really get the most out of your Ravesis experience. Oh, and it’s pronounced RaVee-Sees (as ex-Styler Sarah likes to point out to me).
