or many, he’s known as one of Brisbane’s best restaurant directors, but to his friends and family he’s simply ‘John’.
“I love my private time with my family. I love having breakfast with them on a Sunday, going for walks, going to the movies, and I love having an afternoon kip if they allow me,” John Gambaro, Director of Gambaro Group, says in between laughs.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise to many that family is one of the most important things in his life. John has been working in the family business, which started off as a humble fish ‘n’ chip shop in Petrie Terrace in 1953, for the past 36 years. Starting out back-of-house cleaning dishes and peeling potatoes, John knows everything there is to know about running a successful business, and credits his father, the late Michael Gambaro (aka, the ‘King of Caxton Street’), and his mother for his passion for food and people.
“I love people, I love meeting people, I love developing, and I love creating new concepts,” he says.
A typical day in his life consists of everything from planning, reviewing,
GO-TO DRINK
creating, and most importantly connecting with people. “What I love to do is walk the venues,” John says. “I like to get around to all the venues daily, so I can touch-base with the guests and our staff.”
The name Gambaro has been synonymous with top-notch hospitality in Brisbane for almost 60 years. Today, Gambaro Group comprimises of the multi-award-winning Gambaro Seafood Restaurant, MG Bar and Function Centre, Persone, Black Hide by Gambaro, Black Hide Steakhouse, and the five-star boutique hotel Gambaro Hotel, with two more venues on the cards for late next year (stay tuned!).
When asked how it feels to have such an iconic reputation in Brisbane, John says: “We’re grateful. We live and breathe looking after people. All we want to do is make sure our diners have the best experience possible.”
“When you look at Brisbane, there’s no other place to live – it’s a combination of beautiful weather, beautiful people, and great developments. We’re no longer the little sister to the other states.”

Nothing says luxury quite like a mini getaway at a five-star beachfront resort, and what better place to sit back and relax than at The Langham Gold Coast.
As the first beachfront hotel address on the GC in over 30 years, The Langham, alongside Jewel Residences, promise a new level of luxury accommodation to locals, interstate travellers, and international travellers alike.
Brought to life by globally renowned Langham Hospitality Group, the grand 339-room luxury hotel, situated between Surfers Paradise
and Broadbeach, not only boasts impressive beachfront views, but striking architecture and a range of world-class dining options such as The Langham’s signature Michelin-starred Cantonese restaurant, T’ang Court. The finedining restaurant – which first opened in Hong Kong in 1988 – has earned itself an impressive reputation and is now considered one of the best Cantonese restaurants in the world, so we can only imagine good things for the Gold Coast venture.
Next on the culinary tour is Akoya, a refined yet casual all-day dining destination made
for the ultimate seafood connoisseur. Their sensational seafood buffet filled with only the best fresh produce (think oysters and lobsters), will leave you wanting more. And once you’re all shucked out, head up to open-air bar, Coral Moon for an afternoon drink while enjoying some picturesque ocean views sweeping down the coastline as far as the eye can see.
However, a visit to The Langham would not be complete without experiencing the coveted Afternoon Tea in the stunning Palm Court, which dates to The Langham’s first hotel in
London. Indulge in delectable savouries and pastries such as apricot cheesecake and crab gougeres, created by their in-house pastry chefs.
Aside from world-class dining spots, there’s plenty to do in and around the hotel. Lounge around the sprawling outdoor pool (which is heated in the cooler months!), enjoy the swim-up bar, and just ‘be’ – the beachfront view is just too spectacular to want to be anywhere else. 26 & Sunny, a Langham eatery, is also close by if you want to pick up a brekkie sandwich to go; and with a location just off the beach, the casual dining spot offers good food, good coffee, and good vibes all around.
However, if you’re after pure relaxation, a trip to the indoor pool will not disappoint. With its asymmetrical structure, sky-high ceiling, and paredback crisp, white lounges, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to a world of bliss. There’s even fresh lemon water outside if you’re feeling parched.
And there’s more. The Langham Gold Coast is also home to Chuan Spa, a peaceful sanctuary offering a variety of indulgent wellness treatments of the East, guided by principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. A date for the spa opening is yet to be announced, so keep your ear to the ground.
And if you can’t go on holidays without moving your body, The Langham Gold Coast also features a state-of-the-art Health Club and a multi-purpose room for a variety of sessions such as yoga, Pilates, and mediation – you can tell Langham prides itself on offering literally the best of the best for each one of its guests.
While The Langham has been up-and-running for a few months now, the hotel’s official opening date is set for 21 October. While details on the fanfare are currently tight-lipped, word on the street is it’s not one to be missed.
So, the next time you’re looking for a truly indulgent escape, look no further than The Langham Gold Coast – a new wave of luxury awaits.

THE NEW COHORT
Meet the new generation of up-and-coming Brissy designers.
By PENELOPE PELECASRACHEL JOHNSTON
Rachel Johnston entered university wanting to be a stylist, but after working on several shoots, she found herself looking for fashion pieces that didn’t quite exist yet. She then began working on film sets which reignited her passion for fashion design, and before long, eeyo was created.
“[Starting] eeyo for me was a way to create clothes for a market that I was having difficulty finding designs in, while also creating a brand that is responsible in terms of ethics and responsibility,” she says. “I would describe eeyo as being quite eclectic. It draws influence from many different eras of time and the inner and outer worlds.”
Rachel’s big break came in April 2020 while interning at emerging designer studio and retail store Practice Studio. “I designed, made, and sold my very first eeyo product in there,” she says. “It was such an exciting experience.”
Since then, Rachel has gone from strength to strength and was recently awarded QLD Fashion Design Graduate of the Year by Design Institute of Australia. However, a big career highlight for her was being able to wear her own brand to Sydney Fashion Week earlier this year.
Rachel is now gearing up for eeyo’s official launch later this year. “There are some really exciting products coming in for sure!” she says. “Not all just fashion products either – I’m looking at exploring into other industries too.”
POLLY MCKEVITT
Polly McKevitt has had a love for fashion from a young age, so it only seemed fitting she’d one day head up her own fashion label. Pol By Polly was created in May 2022, less than six months after she graduated from QUT with a Bachelor of Design with honours in fashion.
“I wanted to design one-of-a-kind, handmade crochet pieces by using eccentric colours and freehand techniques,” she says. “My main creation is the Jelly Bag, a frilly, colourful mess made from mohair yarn. I love the soft, fuzzy textures and whimsical shapes that mohair yarn creates.”
Polly was first introduced to crochet as part of her final graduate collection, where she crafted the first-ever Jelly Bag.
“I was presented the entrepreneurship award and completed a two-week bootcamp course with the co-founder of The Iconic, which also helped me kickstart my brand,” she says.
“MY STYLE IS A CHAOTIC CONCOCTION OF COLOUR, TEXTURE, AND FLARE.”
Polly is now looking forward to seeing what the future holds for her fun and colourful brand. She recently moved to London to complete a master’s degree in Brand Innovation –so, we’re sure we’ll be seeing a lot more from this mover and shaker!

For as long as Zoe can remember she has been interested in fashion, but she never imagined a career in the industry. “In high school, I never really knew what I wanted to do, but it was kind of just bubbling away right there the whole time,” she says. “I only really decided when I was in my final year of school that I wanted to pursue it as a career, and I haven’t looked back since.”
“I wanted to have a place to share all my outfits,” she says. “I also wanted to connect more with the sewing community and provide more insight into each design.”
Zoe describes her brand as “the perfect

By BETHAN WARRIORFIRST OF HER KIND
She’s the first female CEO of one of Australia’s heritage fashion brands. Get to know Catherine Williamson of Wittner.
By BETHAN WARRIORHi Catherine! Tell us about your career and how you started as a casual retail worker for Wittner and worked all the way up to CEO:
Hello! Gladly, I always reflect on my career journey and find it so special that I was able to learn the company from the ground up. After I finished my honours, I moved to Sydney and was looking for casual work. We walked the corridors of Warringah Mall, and I put my resumé in with Wittner. Being the age that I was, a critical part of the decisionmaking process was considering where I’d most like to use a staff discount. So Wittner was a no-brainer in that respect. I was a casual employee, and then I was asked to have a coffee with the regional manager. Now, this regional manager, Sandy Bos (an icon in our brand) had worked for the business for over 20 years before her retirement. And Sandy said to me, ‘We’ve got to get you to head office. One of the Wittner family will call you.’ And lo and behold Michael Wittner called me and gave me an incredible opportunity. After moving to Melbourne to start an internship at the Wittner support office I loved it so much that I just kept showing up and no one said anything. I then worked my way through to run the product team and continued working upwards.
How does it feel being the first female CEO of the company and what are some of your goals for the Wittner brand?
It’s a wonderful label to hold and something I’m incredibly proud of. The Wittner family has built such a strong legacy and business and it feels so special to be a part of it especially for such a long time. One of my goals for Wittner is to keep
building on the legacy that has already been built. To continue with the core values that have been established over the past 110 years of excellence. Our key philosophy to ‘walk the Wittner way’ is about innovation and adapting, and continuously moving forward by listening to what your customer wants. Shoes really are the centrepiece of each outfit, and we will continue to deliver elevated and style driven collections.
We’ve heard becoming CEO by 35 was on your vision board, can you tell us how you achieved this goal and what kept you motivated through your career?
That is correct! I’m a huge believer in vision boards and their capacity to help you achieve your goals in life. A few months after my 34th birthday I gave birth to my beautiful twin girls so naturally I had this feeling that perhaps it wasn’t going to happen in my timeline. But as we now know, I was lucky enough for it to happen. I really do believe in manifestation and if you put it out there and you believe in it, then things have a funny way of energising and circulating to them.
How has motherhood informed your working life? What legacy do you hope to create for the industry that your daughters will inherit?
Motherhood is a career on its own but when I then transitioned back into the workforce, I had the biggest projects I’ve ever had in my career to date. While it was overwhelming to some respect, I found you just have to take each day as it comes. For me being a leader and a mother, is all about modelling and leading by example.

Meet the two Brisbane besties
levelling up our accessories game with these effortlessly elegant styles.
By BETHAN WARRIORWe all know the right handbag can be the hero of any fashionable fit. When accessories can make or break an outfit, investing in timeless, quality styles are not only the smart but also the stylish choice to make. There aren’t many who understand this better than founders and friends Lou Kendall and Heidi Bailey of Louenhide.
Nestled in Brisbane’s northside, Louenhide is the handbag and accessories brand that is every bit as authentic and sophisticated as its namesake. Both originally New South Wales country girls, Lou and Heidi both settled in Brisbane after having former careers in teaching and pharmacy, as well as becoming mothers to growing families. As they put it, “We were always intrigued and interested in the retail side of the business and with an eye for fashion and accessories… We both had children at similar ages and to be honest we just yearned to do something else besides kids, our creative side had vanished with a growing family.”
16 years ago, Lou and Heidi noted a gap in the market for fun yet functional coloured bags –believe it or not, colourful bags weren’t the top trend we have now and these ladies noticed. After selling a few styles to their nearest and dearest and seeing how well they were received, they took the plunge and Louenhide was official. Now 16 years later, Louenhide is one of Brisbane's most-beloved brands and a local success story, with over 500 stockists across the globe.
The latest Louenhide collection can be seen honouring the brand's core values – timeless, trusted, and authentic. Classic silhouettes such as the camera, hobo sling, and baguette bag can be seen in on-trend colours such as bold green or powder blue as well as their core shades of tan, cream, and black. The details are what sets this brand apart. Noticed for their high-quality vegan leather, excellent craftmanship and chic gold hardware, a Louenhide bag is an everyday staple that combines elegance and ease, seamlessly. If you’re looking for a new fashion investment sure to elevate any ensemble, shopping at this local label is a no- brainer.

OBJET OF OUR DESIRE
For this fashion designer, home is where the heart and the passion is.
By POLLYANNA GARDNERTrends may come and go, but when it comes to style, it’s the one-of-a-kinds that really make a mark. With an enviable fashion pedigree and over a decade of taste-making experience under her belt for the likes of Michael Kors, Diane Von Furstenberg, Phillip Lim, and Rebecca Minkoff, Brisbane-born, New York City based fashion designer Rosemary Blanch, knows this better than most. For Rosie, a discerning eye for the unique – in this case for homewares or objet – has not only become a reprieve from the demands of the fast and furious fashion industry, but also a wildly successful sidehustle. We sat down with the designer and owner of the impeccably curated, Rosemary Home, to find out how she makes it all happen.
Tell us a little bit about how you got into fashion?
I think I started to become really obsessed with fashion when I was about 12 or 13 years old. After finishing university at QUT, I secured an internship in NYC at Diane Von Furstenberg’s atelier and everything started from there.
How did you transition into Rosemary Home?
I think when you work in fashion and especially as a designer it can be quite an intense job, so you need an outlet. Homewares has become the new creative outlet for me, as fashion is now in the simplest terms, a job. What do you look for when selecting your pieces?
I am always looking for something that I haven’t seen before or something really unusual. I think objects that really embody another time, are often the most appealing to me and my customers.
Is there anything that you just can’t keep in stock?
Italian Alabaster Chess Sets. I receive emails every other week about when our Italian Alabaster Chess Sets will be restocked –everyone loves them, so if you see one grab it!
What’s next for you and for Rosemary Home?
Lots! While my current range is all vintage and meticulously sourced, I am currently working on a glassware line which will be manufactured in Italy, and I’m also starting to produce a new line of Alabaster Chess Sets and other alabaster home decor products.
Top tip for Aussies thinking of moving to NYC?
Do it! NYC is an amazing city filled with opportunities. Especially if you are a creative, NYC is an amazing place to work internationally. It’s an incredibly challenging place but can be so rewarding.
STYLING BRISBANE
Wherever you live in Brisbane, chances are you’ve had the pleasure of walking past one of Jano Kotzas’ amazing window displays. Jano, Managing Director and Founder at The Prop House, is behind some of Brisbane’s most incredible events and activations, including styling the Commonwealth Games Athletes’ Village and countless Queensland shopping precincts decorated for Christmas.
Starting at a young age, her introduction to design blossomed while decorating the family Christmas tree. “I was always the family member
who was tasked with decorating the family parties and the Christmas tree,” she says.
However, her love for the industry really transformed after she interned for one week as a window dresser with Sportsgirl in Queen Street Mall. The internship eventuated into a full-time gig, and before long Jano at age 19 was running her own visual merchandising business Jano Window Dresser Extraordinaire.
“I was very busy doing my visual merchandising around town as a freelancer and working in many shopping centres installing fashion parades and activations.”
“After going to several events in Brisbane in the early ‘90s that were all decorated the same, I thought ‘I can do better than this!’, so in 1995 I started up The Prop House to primarily be the event arm of the business and 27 years later we are still creating amazing events across Brisbane and South East Queensland,” she says.
The Prop House is now known as Brisbane’s favourite event theming company, specialising in corporate event styling, prop hire, visual merchandising, and corporate Christmas displays.

The Brow & Skin Studio has been beautifying the women of Ashgrove and surrounds for almost two decades, so when I found out I was coming in for a facial treatment, I knew I was in for a treat.
From the moment I stepped inside the studio I felt instantly relaxed – picture a dimly lit space, relaxing music, and beauty products that smell sensational. Owner Sherril Dalitz greeted me at the door before leading me to a room where I changed into a luxurious bath robe.
I was booked in for the OxyGeneo – the new super-facial treatment that promises firmer, fresher, and naturally healthier-looking skin. After a busy few weeks, this is exactly what I needed.
For those who haven’t heard of OxyGeneo, as a quick recap, the facial treatment is made up of three technologies: OxyGeneo – a unique oxygenating process used during treatment that triggers a physiological response known as the Bohr Effect, Tripollar Radio Frequency – a completely safe skin tightening treatment that uses

focussed radio frequency, and Ultrasound, which improves blood flow and absorption of the active ingredients by applying ultrasound waves to the skin. For more information, head to The Brow & Skin Studio website.
After a gentle face cleanse, we launched into the treatment. Sherril first started with some radio frequency to stimulate collagen and elastin in my skin. Surprisingly I found this step incredibly relaxing as it works by heating the skin.
Next, Sherril used an Oxypod capsule to thoroughly exfoliate my skin and start the oxygenation process, while removing dead cells to brighten the skin. Sherril used a hydrating pod on me, but there are multiple pods to choose from based on your skin needs and concerns.
The final step involved Sherril applying a Geneo serum with a blend of active ingredients onto my skin and using ultrasound technology to help the serum fully absorb into the skin’s deep layers.
We finished with a bonus LED Light Therapy session, which was the perfect end to a relaxing facial treatment. I left the studio feeling refreshed, and excited to show off my brighter and firmer skin to the world. And the best part was, there was absolutely no downtime involved. All up, I was there for an hour.
So, if you’re thinking about giving your skin a refresh, a visit to The Brow & Skin Studio, who also specialise in all things brows, will not disappoint. Sherril and Angela will go above and beyond to make sure your experience is a memorable one.
Sherril's philosophy has always been about great skin and finding solutions for clients. The addition of the science-based and much-loved Geneo Device completes their already-impressive list of results driven treatments, ensuring they're across all things skin.

As soon as I stepped foot in Corn Street Cafe, I knew I was in for a good time. From the great food smells, the upbeat music to the warm smiles from husband-and-wife duo Jaime and Fatma, Corn Street Cafe, in the heart of Ashgrove, is worth the visit.
Known as one of Brisbane’s best breakfast and lunch spots, the menu adds an Aussie twist to traditional dishes from Jaime and Fatma’s origin countries Ecuador and Turkey. Think delectable sharing platters to dishes highlighting Ecuadorian-style chorizo.
I recently had the pleasure of sampling a few meals – and all I can say is, I can’t wait to go
back! I started off with the Turkish Mezze platter, which consisted of cilbir (Turkish eggs in garlicky labneh), tomatoes, cucumber, olives, halloumi, sujuk (traditional mild spicy Turkish sausage) and simit (Turkish bagel), before tucking into The Mushroom, which I’m sure you can all guess had a cheesy stuffed mushroom as the star of the dish.
As a self-confessed smashed avo connoisseur, I couldn’t wait to try Corn Street Cafe’s version. Well, it did not disappoint. Slathered on one slice of thick sourdough, the smashed avo was paired with ajvar (eggplant and roasted capsicum sauce), lemon baked feta, and topped with paprika roasted pepitas, buttered crumbs and beetroot crackling. I’d recommend pairing it with the iced
long black.
If you’re heading there for lunch, the Choripan, which consists of grilled chorizo on baguette with chimichurri (green sauce), is a winner. It’s simple, but the two flavours together were mouthwatering. However, the standout dish for me was the Eggplant Kofte. Picture eggplant wrapped meatballs with pilaf and garlic cucumber labneh. While slightly spicy, I had to stop myself from licking the plate clean as it was that delicious!
So, whether you’re looking for a place to chill out with the fam or plan a weekend catchup, add Corn Street Cafe to your food bucket list pronto!

Chase stress away
Everyone has occasional or acute stress when things go wrong, but recent years have brought chronic stress with challenges that have persisted over an extended period. Control and autonomy predict life satisfaction, which is why Covid-19 uncertainties have been testing. As with any behavioural change, it is thoughts and emotions that act as barriers to implementing self-care practices. I recommend you write a self-care plan that identifies activities, processes, and strategies that you can commit to. Here are the critical coping strategies for self-care:
• Control what you can and be okay with what you can’t
• Exercise before/after work (walk, run, swim, cycle)
• Get eight hours of sleep every night (9pm-5am)
• Learn how you can fully relax
• Turn off emails and your work phone out of work hours
• Have creative hobbies that you regularly enjoy
• Prioritise close relationships (partner, family, friends, pets).
A self-care plan will enable you to stay on track and live the dream with work, rest, and play.
VARICOSE VEINS with Dr Nicholas Kemp Summer-ready legs
Living in Brisbane we’re very fortunate to have a climate that allows us to wear shorts or skirts year-round. However, for those with varicose veins, their choice of clothing may be limited if they feel self-conscious.
Others might not have issues with the look but instead suffer from symptoms such as ache, swelling and restless leg. These can often be exasperated during the heat of summer, making our Queenslander lifestyle something to be dreaded rather than enjoyed.
All procedures, medical and cosmetic, at our clinic are walk-in/walk out with no downtime.
We also stock a wide range of compression garments made from breathable material. When patients attend their final review following the successful conclusion of treatment, it’s often said that they wished they had come in years ago! Being proactive about your venous health and booking a consultation can help avoid future skin damage, and it may even give you the confidence to ditch the sarong this summer!
STYLING TIPS with Mark Ferguson Fashion versus style
Fashion by definition is the popular or the latest style of clothing. I believe that enduring style should always be the focus rather than ‘fashion’. This doesn’t mean enduring style is void of fashion, just manicured to be lasting. Enduring style can and should take elements from fashion, but it is not defined by the latest style, merely adapted to be more fashionable.
So, what’s in fashion right now? Starting with colour, women’s fuchsia suits and shirts are a strong statement. The monochromatic combination also works well with another colour of the season, orange.
For the men, look towards embellishments of brooches and understated beading of crystals on your classic formal suits. Or, with Spring Carnival around the corner, why not consider a brightly coloured coral suit?
Above all, consider choosing pieces you want to wear well into the future.
BUSINESS AND MINDSET with Brad Wegner
Mind reboot
We all love Google, right? Type in a word like anger, resentment, or fear and presto, thousands of instant matches. Treat your brain like a super computer.
Much like Google, when you punch in a word, it will find you a match and then search for evidence to verify. Once you have all the results, your brain happily shares this with your day-today mindset and guess what? Welcome to a scary movie of your life which most likely is not accurate and will not transpire.
What if you changed the input from those addictive negative thoughts most of us have, to calming positive thoughts? What if you replace anger with apathy, resentment with contentment, and fear with courage. What changes may ‘magically’ take place in all aspects of your life? Is it time for your super computer to get a reboot?
REAL ESTATE with Craig Lea
Style is everything
Did you know that fashion and interior design are often linked? Not only do trends in both fields regularly cross over and develop off the back of one another, but the clothing you wear and the way you present your home are opportunities to express yourself and your style.
In eras where bright feature walls were all the rage, neon and block colours were simultaneously on every rack in clothing stores. More recently, white on white walls, cream and beige furnishings, and goldtone accents in homes have coincided with the rise in popularity for neutral-toned outfits and gold jewellery.
So, if you see a common theme throughout your wardrobe and your home décor, lean into it as personal style is so important!

COFFEE MASTERCLASS with Penny Wolff
Fashionable and well-engineered
The AeroPress is a filter brewer that is easy-to-use, convenient and requires almost no cleaning, plus makes the perfect travelling companion! However, one of the biggest benefits of the AeroPress is its versatility. Coffee bloggers, baristas, home users, industry experts, and AeroPress Championship winners can all agree there’s no wrong way to make delicious coffee with an AeroPress.
However, for best the results, I typically use perfectly roasted filter specialty coffee beans (rested for peak flavour) and reverse osmosis filtered water. The ratio of coffee to water, the water temperature, and the amount of contact time between coffee and water are all variables that affect the flavour. Ultimately, you want the coffee to do all the talking. But don’t worry, the AeroPress comes with a guide! And there’s a variety of recipes from the World AeroPress Championships online (yes, it’s really a thing!).
In fact, I love it so much that this year we’re hosting the 2022 Australian AeroPress Championships at Wolff Coffee Roasters on Friday 21 October, where you can come along and witness all the coffee enthusiasts brewing with this fine device.
TRAVEL INSIDER with Rose Febo
What’s your travel style?
For as long as I can remember travelling has always been celebrated with a sense of occasion and privilege (the pandemic reinforced that!). So, what’s happened to the glamour of travel?
American actor Stanley Tucci, (best known for his role in The Devil Wears Prada), believes dressing smartly to travel or cruise should be an unspoken rule. However, over the years dress standards have shifted dramatically. Now you don’t have to be fancied up in a cocktail dress or tuxedo.
I mean living a life welltravelled shouldn’t mean you have to sacrifice style, right? Ladies, the loose and layered look is comfortable and chic. Opt for travel accessories that are both stylish and comfortable like a silk travel pillow and eye mask, leather headphones and passport case.
There is a definite art to travel fashion. The Queen was a wonderful example of this, her ability to dress for each destination and occasion, from Malta to South Africa or Scotland to Sri Lanka, is worth noting.
Let’s see more style return to the skies! For fellow passengers, who knows you may be offered that elusive upgrade. Ready to board and in need of expert trip planning? Contact me today and stay inspired!

The must-have jewellery staple
The Love Bracelet is one of the most popular and recognisable designs in Cartier’s iconic history. Designed in 1969, the bracelet was the creation of Italian-born American jewellery designer, Aldo Cipullo.
The bracelet consists of a close fitting, oval shape, with two rigid arcs which is worn on the wrist and removed using a specific screwdriver. Available in either 18-carat yellow, white, or rose gold, diamond set or without diamonds, the unisex hardware-inspired bracelets have universal appeal, and can be worn every day – they’re the must-have staple for jewellery connoisseurs! They are collected and admired by many, including Sarah Jessica Parker, Cameron Diaz, Elizabeth Taylor, and Steve McQueen. Leonard Joel are delighted to present a collection of Love Bracelets in their next Fine Jewels & Timepieces auction on Monday 24 October.
BRISVEGAS TO La La Land
For those who dream of bright lights, nothing lures louder than the opportunistic roar of Hollywood –especially for Aussie creatives. Be it the year-round sunshine or the comforting sight of gumtrees lining Melrose – our love affair with La La Land is undeniable. Here, we chat to five locals who’ve made the pilgrimage to the city of angels, about pursuing their passions and why they’re loving life stateside.
By POLLYANNA GARDNER“LA always felt like an extension of home,” former Brisbanite, Eliza O’Connor of Real Fine Jewellery says. “It just felt like a place where anything was possible, and that has definitely been true of my experience so far in LA.” Indeed, with her jewellery adorning the famous necklines of everyone from Sydney Sweeney to Scarlett Johansson, the proximity to celebrity appears an unrivalled opportunity, with the echoes of home padding the transition for her, “the weather is better than home to be honest –25 and sunny literally every day – it helps with the homesickness!”
It’s a sentiment widely shared, as PR queen, Elyse Goyen, of creative agency Future Fantastic reiterates, “LA is a market with enough similarities for our Australian body of work to apply, but offers different experiences, opportunities, and clients that have enabled us to grow and expand.
Also energetically, it has a similar laid-back sensibility to Brisbane.”
For author, podcaster, actress, and entrepreneur, Lola Berry, who now spreads her life evenly between California and Byron Bay, the appeal is also in the opportunities. “I love the ‘anything is possible’ attitude in LA. No dream is ever too big, unattainable, or far out. I can go after my wildest career goals…and as a creative person, it’s important to have a place that feeds your passion.”
The lifestyle possibilities it would seem, are also endless. For Eliza’s brother and artist Tom O’Connor, LA has not only provided international momentum for his art, but also access to world class restaurants and the more than occasional brush with celebrity, “The best restaurant in LA right now is Horses on Sunset – I often see Baz Luhrmann there and it’s exceptional from the interiors to the modern American menu, even to
the equine-shaped butter.”
One place you won’t find them? Touristy spots like Hollywood Boulevard and the Venice Boardwalk. “To beach like a local, skip the boardwalk and instead grab a bottle of orange wine from Lincoln Fine Wines or Helen’s, and find a patch of grass to perch on by the beach at Ocean Park,” Kate O’Connor (of Future Fantastic) says. “The people watching is second to none.”
So, what is their advice for those yearning to cross the pond? As LA is vast it can feel lonely, but it doesn’t have to. Get in touch with old friends, colleagues, and even new contacts in your industry to get your network going before you touch down. Oh, and head straight to Bar Stella in Silverlake, it’s dark, chic, and the martinis come with a side of celebrity.

THE POWER OF BEING SEEN
Making a difference, one wardrobe at a time.
By POLLYANNA GARDNERAn integral source of support since 2008, Brisbane’s Suited to Success styling studio is a haven for those experiencing joblessness and barriers to permanent employment throughout Queensland. Under CEO Tamara Smith’s passionate guidance, the small but determined volunteer team provide essential wardrobe items, as well as résumé generation and styling assistance to their clients on a complimentary basis to assist in securing gainful employment. Simply put, Suited to Success help get jobs for over 1,000 people every year, through face-toface and virtual consultations.
However, as Tamara says, there’s so much more to it than just physical support. “Coming to us means you leave with new clothing or a new résumé, but it also means being filled with confidence and hope,” she says. “It’s knowing a network of people are behind you – cheering you on. It’s the transformational power of being seen.”
With many in our community currently experiencing lengthy bouts of unemployment, Suited to Success focusses on not only how to get more people into employment, but also on how to keep them there.
“All of our services are underpinned by the goal of increasing self-esteem and selfconfidence, because a lack of self-esteem and self-confidence is a huge barrier to overcome,” Tamara says.
“Every day we get to help people…to make a real tangible impact on people’s lives, and every day people tell us how much our services mean to them.”
So, what can you do to help? Volunteer, shop the retail store, donate a wish list item, or connect and help spread the word via social media. As Tamara puts it, “every like helps!”
