Hello! Grab a cuppa, a wine, a cheese platter, whatever … but get comfy, because boy have we got a jam-packed issue for you!
As always, we love presenting talented and inspiring locals and this month we have excelled (in my humble opinion).
Our Dep Ed Penelope Pelecas was relentless in chasing Matilda Katrina Gorry for a mini photoshoot and interview. Literally coming just off the back of their epic World Cup campaign, Katrina kindly gave us two precious hours to be styled, photographed, and interviewed. We hope you agree Katrina looks beautiful (styled by our in-house Stylist Kathryn Edmonds, of course!)
I’ve long admired local artist Rachael Sarra who also features this month – inside, she talks about how art and design are vital to communication, connection, and culture.
For those planning a wedding, there’s also something special (and hopefully helpful) for you in our Wedding Guide.
And finally, we shine the spotlight on the leafy suburbs of Ashgrove, Bardon, and The Gap – we love it when readers support local businesses, so please, if you’re shopping with any of our advertisers, please tell ‘em you saw them in Style!
TRACY SINCLAIR EDITOR @ styletracyIcouldn’t have said it better myself; this month’s mag is filled to the brim with incredible content! Inside, we chatted with leading Brissy artist Michael Zavros, twin sisters and foodies Maya and Chelsea of Food By Maya and Chels, and the husband-and-wife duo behind Wham Bam Thank You Sam (a Vegas-themed wedding chapel), plus plenty more!
Tracy also had the pleasure of staying at the ever-so luxurious and relaxing Elements of Byron (have a read on page 63), and we’ve rounded up the most Instagrammable restaurants from around the globe – someone get me on a plane stat!
P.S we’ve also rounded up the best products to achieve Hailey Bieber’s ‘strawberry girl’ makeup look.
Enjoy!
PENELOPE PELECAS DEPUTY EDITOR @ penepelecasMichael Zavros
BOOK SMARTLESS PODCAST JEFF KOONS SOUTH AFRICAThe world of Michael Zavros’ artwork is one of beguiling beauty, with themes of luxury and decadence woven through a striking variety of works ranging from hyper-realist paintings to intricate sculptures.
Growing up in the Gold Coast hinterland and now residing in Brisbane, Michael explains that his love of art was sparked at a young age: “My parents took me to oil painting lessons with Mr. Scott. I loved oil painting and realism, and my goal was to one day be as good as Mr. Scott.”
Hailed as a golden boy of the Australian art scene, it’s fitting that his current career-spanning collection on show at QAGOMA is titled ‘The Favourite’. The exhibition coaxes audiences into an effortlessly cool and unapologetically aesthetic microcosm of Zavros’ creations.
“Opening this solo show at GOMA has been very special,” Michael says. “The show looks back at 25 years of practice and also includes five new works that each represent a different and challenging new direction for me.”
Describing the motivation behind his prolificacy, Michael says,
“A drive to be the best I can be from an inner competition with myself is key. Also, as a creative person I do derive so much joy just from the very act of making. I’m fortunate to be doing the thing that I was made for.”
With shows in Singapore and Melbourne on the near-horizon, Michael still finds time to unwind at his acreage on the outskirts of Brisbane.
“I need long hours in the studio, but with three teenage kids, things are pretty hectic. We also have horses, chickens and ducks, so there are a lot of distractions.”

JEWELLERY ARTmeets
Some may argue some of the best ideas have come from a spontaneous night out. Well, champagne and endless roughhand sketches played a big part in bringing the awardwinning ‘Amelia’ collection to life.
Tammy Keers, owner of Artisans Bespoke Jewellers in Paddington, was determined to hand-make a piece that pushed the boundaries of design and manufacture, and she did just that.
The piece, which was inspired by American aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart (the first woman to fly non-stop solo across the Atlantic Ocean) won Tammy and her colleague Kathy McLay the shared title of Jeweller of the Year at the Jewellers Association of Australia Australasian Jewellery Awards.
Amelia was designed for the modern-day “confident, stylish, and successful” woman. It compromises of a kangaroo suede and leather clutch, designed by local leather smith Stella Petrou, embellished with an 18-carat white gold wing insignia and a detachable diamond feature that can also be worn on the diamond set chain as a pendant. All up, the total diamond weight is 6.82ct – one word, wow.
“The Amelia collection took over 350 hours to design and manufacture,” Tammy explains.
“My favourite part of Amelia’s design is its versatility – it is exceptional as a completed clutch with the diamond-set wrist chain, however when it converts to a necklace the clutch is still a wonderful statement on its own.”
Now, a transitional diamond-set clutch is definitely not something
Artisans Bespoke Jewellers are changing the way we think about jewellery.Borboleta Earrings
you see every day in a jewellery shop.
Tammy continues: “To win Jeweller of the Year with my wonderful colleague Kathy and to have the recognition from the jewellery industry has been the ultimate reward after 30 years of hard work for both of us.”
From a young age, Tammy has had an affinity with the arts. “Drawing and designing is all I ever did,” she says, adding she loved the idea that something she made would one day be handed down through generations.
Tammy’s journey with jewellery started with a Bachelor of Jewellery Design, as well as an apprenticeship as a bench jeweller. After her four-year degree and apprenticeship, Tammy worked in the market for another three years before she took a leap of faith and started her own business out of her garage – one that not only shaped her future, but the future of aspiring female jewellery designers to come.
“Looking back now, I had just bought my first house and my [ex]-partner was a student. I had quit my job and went for it – it was very brave.”
At the beginning, Tammy worked for three jewellers doing trade work repairs and client creations, however, whenever she had a spare moment, she would dream up and design interesting pieces for her own business. “I dreamt of a studio space that offered something different with hand-made quality pieces.”
Her dream soon became a reality when
a “tiny little space” in Paddington became available on the market. Fast-forward almost 20 years and Artisans Bespoke Jewellers is now one of the leading jewellers in Brisbane. Trust us when we say if you’re looking for an unusual but striking piece, you’ll find it here. Artisans Bespoke Jewellers pride themselves on handcrafting beautiful jewellery that will not only stand the test of time but add a little drama and flair to your collection. Working with only the best Mother Nature can provide, the natural diamonds and coloured gemstones used here are enhanced with an art deco influence featuring a modern twist. Whether it’s a new make or remodelling your old jewellery into something new, your
consultation will be a collaborative process between you and the highly qualified inhouse jewellers, factoring in your lifestyle and aesthetic before your piece is handmade onsite with lots of love. Each piece is truly a work of art.
“As my business has grown, my team have also grown, and it’s been an absolute joy to work with [them],” she says. “It is my business, yes, but I am nothing without my team. The energy and joy of Artisans is exciting, and our customers genuinely feel it and it really is a magical place, creating these handmade family heirlooms.”
KICKIN’ GOALS
By PENELOPE PELECASMatildas star Katrina Gorry was ready to hang up her boots three years ago. “Spending so much time away from my family, I started to resent the game,” she tells me while getting hair and makeup done.
It was 2020 and Katrina, or ‘Mini’ as she’s affectionately known to teammates and fans, was playing in Norway. She decided to temporarily step away from the game to start a family –something she always dreamed of. So, Katrina set out on her fertility journey alone and began the process of IVF.
Katrina gave birth to her beautiful daughter, Harper on 16 August 2021. And just two short years later, she was representing Australia in the FIFA Women’s World Cup semi-finals, which coincidentally marked her 100th appearance for the Tillies as well as her daughter’s 2nd birthday. You couldn’t write a fairy-tale quite like it.
We’re sitting in a hotel room in the heart of the Fortitude Valley (Katrina’s a Brissy local, she grew up a mere five minutes away in New Farm) and I ask her what compelled her to continue pursuing the sport she loves.
“I feel like [having Harper] reignited my passion for the game, I found the love for it again,” the 31-year-old midfielder says. “Being able to come back and play my 100th game on her 2nd birthday was pretty cool. I don’t know how it worked out, but it was a special day for us both.”
And while all of Australia knows that unfortunately the Tillies didn’t take home the trophy, they certainly created a lasting legacy, one that will no doubt inspire the next generation of aspiring football players to come.
“Of course, we wanted to go home with the medal around our neck, but I think we did exactly what we set out to,” Katrina says.
“Everyone’s still talking about the games, it’s just been incredible. Anyone you kind of talk to, whether they follow football or not, [tuned] in to watch the games and I think that says a lot.”
I begin telling Katrina one of my favourite memories from the tournament was watching the quarter-final shootouts on my husband’s phone in the middle of West End (we ended up attracting a crowd of 20-plus people – it was unreal!).
“I’ve never really felt a feeling like that in
football before,” she recalls. “It feels like we played the final in that game. I feel like we probably used all our energy on that game, and it was really hard to get up for the next two games. So, I think for all of us that was a special moment that we will hold close to our hearts forever.”
At the time of this interview, Katrina was only in Brisbane a couple more days before she jets off to Sweden to finish off the football season. She plays for Vittsjö GK Women alongside fellow Tilly, Clare Polkinghorne and her fiancé, Clara Markstedt.
“I feel like the average player is probably a bit more experienced and a bit older,” she explains. “The league is quite competitive.”
Katrina, who moved to Vittsjö, the quaint town “in the middle of nowhere,” six months after Harper was born, is planning to come home once the season wraps up in November before relocating again.
“I’ll try pick up another contract, not sure where that will be yet,” Katrina says, adding she’s looking forward to having some downtime.
For the last couple of years, the football star has played a season in Europe followed by a season at home for Brisbane Roar.
Katrina’s latte arrives when I begin to ask what inspired her to chase a career in football.
“I have three brothers,” she says. “I always wanted to be like them and that’s how it all started.”
“Back when I was growing up, we didn’t really have any female players to look up to. When I was 13, I was picked up for the [Queensland Academy of Sport Football Program] and at that time they had a lot of the Matildas in that team. It was then that I [realised] there was a pathway into football.”
However, it didn’t come without its obstacles. Katrina was dropped from the team due to inexperience.
“I was so young; I didn’t really know what I wanted to do. [Once] that got taken away from me, that’s when I knew what I really wanted.”
And the rest was history. Katrina has been an integral part of the Matildas squad since her debut in 2012.
Not only this, but the No.19 midfielder also played all over the world, with stints in the National Women’s Soccer League in the United States with KC Kansas City and the Utah Royals, Japan’s Vegalta Sendai, Norway’s Avaldsnes, and most recently Sweden’s Vittsjö GIK. She’s also represented Australia in three World Cups and at the Olympic Games. Katrina is now gearing up for the Olympic qualifiers in October – we can’t wait to see what the next 12 months brings for this absolute fire cracker of a player!
FAST FIVE

LOVE or
Is online dating really that bad?
By TEAGAN WITHEROWLet’s face it, we’re in the era of online dating and it has totally transformed the way we meet people and form relationships. With over six million monthly downloads in July 2023, Tinder and its fellow dating apps are practically the new black. So, the big question is, is this digital dating era thing a blessing or a curse? Well, according to dating and relationship coach at Dating For Love, Jiveny Blair-West, it’s a bit of a mixed bag.
Over the past seven years, Jiveny has mentored and supported men and women to understand, reshape, and nurture their approach to dating and love. “For me, there’s nothing as rewarding as helping someone go from lonely and confused to connected and in love.” But Jiveny’s ultimate goal as a relationship coach is to empower people to navigate the modern dating scene with confidence and insight.
It’s worth mentioning that Jiveny’s passion for the field runs deep, coming from a family where both her parents are psychotherapists specialising in relationships. She even co-authored the ‘How to Make The Biggest Decision of Your Life’ book with her father. You could say that love is literally encoded in her DNA! So, who better to discuss the intricacies of modern online dating with us?
Jiveny knows that online dating has become a breeding ground for bad behaviour. Ghosting, unsolicited ‘artistic’ photos – we’ve all been there. And let’s not forget the obsession with all the surfacelevel stuff (*cough* 6ft obsession *cough*). But don’t lose hope – there’s a bright side too. Jiveny actually recommends treating dating apps as a tool to meet new people and sharpen those dating skills. It’s like prac in university, only you might score a delicious dinner date out of it.
Let’s say you’re onboard with this practical approach to online dating – what’s next? Well, Jiveny’s got a game plan. First, invest in developing a great profile. Second, put some thought into your bio – it’s
the conversation starter after all. Third, try to move off the app ASAP, whether it’s shifting to Instagram, hopping on a phone call, or meeting in person. And lastly, here’s a big one, lower those first-date expectations.
“When meeting online I actually consider the first date more of a ‘pre-date’ and encourage people to keep it casual and focus on building a connection rather than trying to figure out if you’re a good romantic match or not,” says Jiveny.
Here’s the bottom line: there’s no need to make peace with the fact you might be alone for the rest of your life. Take it from one of Jiveny’s 69-year-old clients who had never been in a committed long-term relationship before. She thought she was ‘too old’ for love, but after putting in the work with Jiveny, she’s now been in a happy committed relationship with her partner of two years. Love knows no age, my friends! If she can do it, so can you.

A fairy-tale fitting
Making a mother’s dream wedding dress and then her daughters decades later, Kerry Xynias is the locally adored dressmaker with a flair for couture.
By STAMATINA NOTARASAs a local West End Greek growing up in the tight-knit community, I’ve been to my fair share of weddings, and can say with certainty that I have seen more dresses made by Kerry Xynias than times I have caught the bouquet – and I'm not mad about it. As a local icon and dressmaker whose work spans generations, it’s not unusual to find Kerry fitting a bride into one of her stunning designs and being poked and prodded into her dream dress just like her mother had been generations before.
Her time abroad in the big smoke saw her soak up couture knowledge from British bridal label Christiana Couture and become a dressmaker to the stars and the royals. Yet, when asked about her most notable dressmaking moment she says, “every client is a memorable one.”
Her longing to work in the industry has been lifelong, with a passion derived from her love of fantasy gown illustrations.
“Wedding dresses are the closest you can get to that type of gown,” Kerry says. “I also love the whole process of watching the bride come alive and absolutely shine in her dress.”
And shine, they do.
When it comes to the design process, Kerry is a listening ear to her client’s desires and finds inspiration through the eyes of the bride.
“When the orders are custom, the client usually has a few ideas of what they like.
Otherwise, I start with what they don’t like and avoid those details.”
While guests see the final product walking down the aisle, prior to was a three-month process of tulle talk and fabric discussions before the mounds of textile and thread turned into a gown for one to be wed. Like your beloved aunt, Kerry’s honest words are given with tender love and a pure refusal for you to walk towards your forever friend looking anything but picture perfect.
From mermaid and A-line to trumpet and ball gown, when saying yes to the dress, remember that every shape can suit every body.
“You can move a few design lines to make any style work for anybody,” Kerry says. And with her finger on the pulse, we had to ask her prediction on the next big dress trend. According to her though, it’s not a dress at all: “Trousers for brides, separates, mix and match, and colours.”
After decades of making memories, she’s ready to share her tricks of the trade with her social enterprise and not-for-profit, The Sewing Business Workroom. This passion project is a co-shared sewing space in Wynnum where young designers can hire equipment and produce their designs, and those from disadvantaged backgrounds can be retrained, giving them a foot in the door of the clothing industry – meaning Kerry’s touch will continue for generations to come.
It’s a world where traditions are everevolving, love finds new expressions, and weddings have become canvasses for creativity. Unconventional wedding dresses are having a major moment this wedding season – a fun and unexpected way for any bride to buck the long wedding dress tradition and go beyond convention to challenge the status quo.

Style’s WEDDING GUIDE
A wedding is filled with so many moving parts – sending invites, booking vendors, attending taste tests (don’t mind if we do), sentimental dress fittings, and so much more. But there’s no doubt that those two very special words make it all worth it!
Get ready for your happily ever after with our annual wedding guide filled with everything from gourmet catering and fairytale venues to luxe hotels and a stunning wedding hosted right here in yours truly (BNE).
Victoria Park
Say ‘I do’ at one of Brisbane’s most iconic wedding destinations.
With rolling green hills and stunning city views, it’s no wonder that Victoria Park has established a reputation as Brisbane’s number one wedding destination. Every corner provides picture-perfect settings for memorable moments that you’ll cherish for years to come.
Each year, over 200 couples choose to get married in one of Victoria Park’s five premier wedding spaces: The Marquee, The Ballroom, Garden Marquee, Alabaster Room, and the Quartz Room. The Marquee is the crown jewel of Victoria Park, featuring spectacular city views, exquisite chandeliers, and floor-to-ceiling windows. Whether you’re opting for a sit-down affair or a glamorous cocktail soirée, The Marquee can cater from 234 to 700 guests.
The Ballroom, which features a private covered terrace overlooking the lush parklands as well as our city, exudes the same grandness as The Marquee but at a slightly smaller scale. And if you’re after something a bit more intimate, the Garden Marquee, Alabaster Room, and the Quartz Room are perfect choices. Our favourite parts? You can hold your ceremony on the adjourning balcony of your chosen reception room or hire The Courtyard ceremony space. Plus, you won’t have to travel far for photos either (you can also hire a golf buggie for the day!).
Victoria Park also has a range of delectable food packages to choose from – they cater for everything from three-course sit down menus to cocktail packages and have recently introduced three new menus: Asian fusion buffet menu, taste of India buffet menu, and a family table menu (picture a share-style Mediterranean-inspired menu served down the centre of the tables).
So, how does it work? All of their couples get a personalised, tailored proposal within 24 hours of their enquiry and are invited for a private viewing. Once confirmed, you’ll be introduced to the venue’s wedding planner, who will do all the ground work for you (we’re talking wedding tool kits, draft run sheets, floor plans etc.) So, what are you waiting for? Start planning your dream wedding with Victoria Park today.

OUR BIG DAY
Describe your wedding in one sentence… Emily & Jack: Timeless, modern, with a touch of fairytale.
How did Jack propose?
E: Jack planned a little weekend getaway to an Unyoked cabin, just the two of us and our fur baby, Yogi. We spent the weekend relaxing, hiking, and watching cows with Yogi. Jack had elaborate plans to incorporate Yogi into the proposal, but Yogi was in holiday mode and not helping at all! Jack proposed one afternoon between the trees in front of the cabin.

Describe your reception and tell us why you chose the Queensland Art Gallery?
E & J: We fell in love with the watermall the moment we walked in, we loved the combination of the concrete and travertine, the stunning water feature, and the architectural details. The idea of having a reception in an art gallery was a unique idea to us, we really enjoyed the process of discovering what art would be occurring at the time of our wedding and the idea that there would be only a select few weddings in the same space.
What was your favourite detail?
E: A special detail to us was the large crepe flowers my mum made for our day. They’re stunning and just a special touch to our wedding that we will always remember.

Describe your ceremony and tell us why you chose the Queensland State Library?
E & J: We wanted a ceremony space that had a seamless indoor-outdoor transition. The Queensland State Library Terrace Room overlooked the courtyard of the Art Gallery, a little preview of the reception to follow. We wanted a venue to match the vibes of the reception space but something that sits seemingly within nature. We absolutely loved it!
Do you have any words of advice for other brides-to-be?
E: Trust in the people around you! The professionals know what they’re doing and your friends and family will make sure everything’s perfect.
Where did you honeymoon?
E & J: We went to Hawaii! The perfect honeymoon of salt, sun, and relaxation.

What happens in BRISVEGAS
Going to the chapel? Meet the real-life couple behind Brisbane’s most unique wedding venue.
By NATALIE MCGOWANAlong Windsor’s bustling Lutwyche Road is where you’ll stumble upon Brisbane’s newest and coolest elopement space, the Vegas-themed Wham Bam Thankyou Sam.
The event space is the brainchild of Kady Capewell, a former makeup artist turned graphic designer, who noticed a gap in the market for a venue that caters to the growing trend of micro-weddings. Kady enlisted the help of Stylist and now Co-founder Amey Rosenthal and her husband, Sam (an established celebrant and the venue’s namesake) to materialise her ‘crazy idea’.
Kady and Sam’s love story began as a meet –
cute at a Toowoomba bar in 2011. “Kady called me over to win a bet that a man wouldn’t shake a lady’s hand,” Sam recalls. “Being from the country, that’s the first thing I did. She won the bet and invited me to sit down. We hit it off from there.”
The rest, as they say, was history. Three years later, the pair tied the knot in Las Vegas. “It wasn’t the most romantic of proposals, but Kady agreed,” Sam says.
It was that trip that inspired Wham Bam Thankyou Sam. The intimate space accommodates 12 guests and offers an innovative, unconventional elopement experience for the modern lovers. Couples can choose between three all-inclusive packages – all they need to bring is their ‘I do’s’.
“The Quickie will see couples legally married in just 30 minutes, The Hour of Power is double the duration and includes a personalised photo booth, loaded bar cart, and charcuterie selection, while the Whole Lotta Lovin’ is tailored for couples wanting the whole shebang,” Kady says.
With the venue’s themes rotating every eight months, Kady is looking forward to flexing her creative muscles and collaborating closely with Amey to see their visions brought to life. Next March will see the departure of Vegas’ razzle and dazzle and the arrival of their upcoming theme: soft deco.
“Think Miami,” Kady says. “It will be completely different to Vegas, and we are so excited for it!”
Looking for a fun, fuss-free way to join your beloved in holy matrimony with only your nearest and dearest in attendance? Hit up the Wham Bam Thankyou Sam team.

Beauty school: SEASONAL COLOUR ANALYSIS
We’ve all fallen victim to donning the wrong shade of lipstick or wearing blush that totally clashes with our complexion, but could there be a simple solution? What if we told you the answer lies in the seasons? Well, here’s where seasonal colour analysis comes in. It’s all about identifying which shades best accent your natural features based on what season you are.
By TEAGAN WITHEROWSummer
The summer colour palette is filled with soft shades and cool tones. Think rosy blush, a nude lip, delicate, light eyeshadow, and touches of subtle fresh pink.
Winter
The winter colour palette likes to keep it clear, classic, and cool. Opt for ashy, light eyeshadows, winged black liners, and red lips.
Autumn
Autumn is all about deep hues – dark red, warm, rich, and glowing products. A smokey eye is ideal for autumn skin!
Spring
Spring skin loves highly saturated colours; pinks, greens, and yellows. Be sure to avoid icy hues though.

La Belle Vie
Bonjour! Say hello to Bardon’s best-kept French secret.
With superb food and wine, great service, and phenomenal views of the lush landscapes of Bardon, La Belle Vie is true to its name ‘the beautiful life’.
Now in its third year of business, the French restaurant and bar, run by Simon Lambert and Behrooz Farahnakian, is already leading the way in the Brisbane fine dining scene. Classics like crème brûlée and steak frites grace the menu, wine bottles line the walls, and soft music plays in the background. Here’s a closer look into what you can find on the menu…
It wouldn’t be a visit to an authentic French restaurant without tucking into some escargots (whole snails) cooked with garlic and butter or a creamy mushroom soup with croutons before mains arrive. Other options include panseared scallops with pumpkin purée and crispy prosciutto and just-seared yellowfish tuna with white sesame and sauce chien (famous French hot sauce).
For mains, choose from snapper baked en papillote (wrapped in a parcel) with seasonal vegetables and velvety beurre blanc sauce, eye-fillet doused in Café de Paris butter and served with red wine jus and French fries, and pan-fried artisanal gnocchi in butter and garlic paired with shiitake mushrooms, pine nuts, and Gruyère cheese, to name a few.
Add delicious sides like broccolini, sautéed French green beans, roasted market mushrooms, and simple lettuce salad (the perfect palate cleanser). And aside from decadent crème brûlée, you can also dig into delicious desserts like French classic profiteroles filled with vanilla ice cream and topped with warm chocolate sauce, and poached bosc pear paired with hot chocolate
sauce, almond tuile, and Chantilly cream. Whether you’re looking for a relaxed authentic dining experience or planning a special event, La Belle Vie is a French masterpiece you have to try. P.S, they also make a great wedding venue! La Belle Vie offers some of the highest service standards in Brisbane at the best value –it only costs $85pp for the set menu.

Zen Acupuncture
Add a little more zen into your life by booking an appointment at Brisbane’s number one acupuncture clinic.
Dealing with muscle soreness? Or just need a little more zen in your life? Zen Acupuncture – which is derived from the Chinese and Sanskrit words for meditation – provides a holistic approach to healing. Located in the heart of Ashgrove, the clinic’s main interests lie in traditional Chinese medicine, dietary therapy, cupping, moxa (the practice of burning dry mugwort near the surface of the skin), electro-acupuncture, orthopaedic acupuncture (a form of acupuncture that focusses on treating musculoskeletal pain), as well as traditional acupuncture.
Dr Olwen Bishop BHSc (Acupuncture), who owns the clinic, has a special interest in
sports recovery and chronic pain management. Olwen has found that combining her traditional Chinese medicine education with modern acupuncture techniques provides a well-rounded and balanced treatment for her patients. She also likes to incorporate elements of mindfulness and meditation into her treatments – encouraging her patients to focus on the present and to become more aware of their physical and emotional experience to result in a better overall outcome.
Olwen is passionate about making acupuncture accessible to everyone and has created an environment that is both calm and peaceful. She wants her patients to feel nurtured
and safe every time they visit by providing a restorative space for recovery and healing.
And while muscle soreness and rehabilitation are the main areas she focuses on, Olwen can also help with general health (for example, acupuncture is believed to stimulate the release of chemicals in the body that can help to regulate the menstrual cycle), fertility, digestive complaints, such as bloating, constipation, indigestion, and mental health. So, if you are looking to add a little more zen into your life, give the clinic a call and see how Olwen can help you.
ARCADE WINE
Delicious wine, authentic fare, and a cosy atmosphere – what more could you want from your neighbourhood wine bar?
There are many wine bars in and around Brisbane, but few can compare to Arcade Wine in Ashgrove. The authentic Italian wine bar, led by sommelier and wine maker Danilo Duseli, is broken up into two food offerings: a cosy lounge bar and a bottle shop (yes, that means you can purchase the flavoursome wine you just sampled over aperitivo). Arcade Wine, which was recently nominated as one of the top 20 wine bars in Brisbane, not only boasts an impressive selection of handpicked quality wines, but also house-made cicchetti (small plates). You can sample wines from regions such as Tuscany, Puglia, Sicily, and Emilia-Romagna to name a few, as well as specialty wines like Chassagne-Montrachet and Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru from Burgundy. Looking for a specific wine? View their full collection instore.
Meanwhile, dig into gourmet menu items like hand-cut roasted potatoes with house-made paprika mayo, homemade sourdough served with whipped burrata, cantabrian anchovies, and basil pesto, and homemade mushroom arancini paired with truffle and parmesan sauce – hungry yet? The quaint lounge bar also hosts monthly tasting events if you want to brush up on your food and wine skills.
Danilo and his partner Pia have also been busy with the launch of their new restaurant D.Vino, which opened six months ago in Woolloongabba. The bistro and vinoteca follows the same philosophy as Arcade Wine, which is all about bringing people together to enjoy good food, and of course, delicious wine. The kitchen, captained by Mirco Mariotto, serves up only the freshest and most authentic Italian fare – who said you had to buy a plane ticket to sample the delightful flavours of Italy? The upcoming year is set to be busy for both Arcade Wine and D.Vino – stay tuned!

The Brow & Skin Studio
Where beautiful brows and skin begin. Sometimes all you need is a mid-week pick-me-up, and we have just the place to visit. The Brow & Skin Studio, which has beautified the women of Ashgrove and surrounds for almost two decades, has recently introduced the Go and Glow facial. As per the name, the treatment will leave your skin looking glowy and radiant almost instantaneously (see to the right) with no downtime involved. Plus, the treatment only takes an hour, so it’s the perfect lunchtime appointment. So, what exactly is this so-called wonder treatment? Well, Sherril explains the facial treatment, which is made up of exfoliation, and oxygenation, triggers a physiological response known as the Bohr effect creating natural CO2 bubbles into the skin. Individually tailored to each skin condition and concerns, this is the ultimate skin treatment, which promises instant and long-lasting effects. Who wouldn’t want to have firmer, fresher, and naturally-healthier looking skin? (For more information, head to The Brow & Skin Studio website). Sounds interesting? STYLING TIPS with Mark Ferguson
The art of wedding style
Crafting a custom wedding suit is a meticulous art, a symphony of style that harmonises with your unique personality, wedding venue, and dress code. It transcends mere tailoring; it is a form of storytelling.
Are you a classic romantic, embracing a timeless black-tie affair or a free spirit, opting for a relaxed beachfront celebration? Your wedding suit should be a reflection of your personality.
Dress code is another key player. Be it formal or casual, your custom suit should set a cohesive tone. No matter where your vows are exchanged, your suit should resonate with the surroundings, achieving visual harmony between you and your chosen backdrop. Summer nights call for lightweight linens, while cosy wools are the perfect match for winter.
Above all, cherish your individuality. It’s not merely clothing; it’s an artwork encapsulating the beauty and authenticity of your union.
EVENT STYLING with Jano
Kotzas‘I do’ dreaming
Statement floral trends, eco-conscious options, and non-traditional ceremonies are just some of the wedding movements we’re seeing more of in the industry. Newlyweds are favouring smaller intimate ceremonies that set the stage for grander Friday celebrations.
We love encouraging ‘green’ weddings with the ability to hire your tablescape details, neon signs, arbours, and easels, sparing the need for new purchases.
Florals are taking on an even bolder role in the wedding day and this season of spring weddings will be no different, as we will see bold colours juxtaposed against soft linens and natural grain furniture (faux florals are also having a moment). We’ll also be seeing a lot more neon signs, such as ‘I Do’ and ‘Let’s Party’. Our stylists love incorporating new trends, but our end mission is to create the day of your dreams, so reach out and let’s start creating your breathtaking matrimony moment!

Oceans of opal
Did you know opals are one of the world’s most popular gemstones, and the national gemstone of Australia? They’re also, coincidentally, the official birthstone of October. Described as a ‘timeless living rainbow’, opals can be an exciting and fresh piece to add to your jewellery collection. They come in a plethora of stunning colours, such as pink, red, blue, and green, and can be manufactured into pretty much anything you can imagine – think pendants, rings, earrings, bracelets, necklaces, and even watches (how beautiful is this black opal and diamond brooch pictured to the right?). Here are some fun facts you may find interesting:
• In the Middle Ages opal was considered good luck
• Black opal is the rarest variation of the stone
• The word opal comes from the Latin word ‘opalus’, which means precious stones
• Australian opals are considered to be some of the finest quality opals in the world.

COPORATE
with Dr John BarlettaBe awe-inspired
Awe gives us great happiness, lifts our spirits, develops creativity, connects us, and is something we can deliberately pursue.
Awe is the feeling of being in the presence of something that moves us emotionally, transcending our current understanding of the world.
To start your journey to be awe-inspired, simply pay very close attention to all the things around you, be present in the moment, focus on your surroundings and you’ll bask in the wonderfulness of life.
If you make a commitment to deliberately switching yourself on to seeing awe, only then will you have the potential to experience the various wonders in life. Wonders such as the courage and good deeds of others, the effervescence of being part of a group, the beauty and intricacies in nature, how music and art can move us, a sense of a spirituality and the reality of our mortality, and epiphanies we can have when engaged in novel experiences.

What to expect post-op
So, you’ve finally bitten the bullet and decided to book in for varicose vein treatment. Here’s what you need to know.
First off, all treatments are done at our clinic, which means no hospital visits or anaesthetics. You also won’t have to worry about pre-paying for your care, you’ll have the freedom to choose a day and time that suits you, and you’ll be free to drive yourself to and from the appointment (plus, there’s on-site parking!).
Post-treatment, there are guidelines set in place to ensure the best results (both medically and cosmetically). After the procedure, measurements are taken for class 2 medicalgrade compression stockings. To reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis, we’ll also get you to go for a short walk on our treadmill.
Gentle exercise is encouraged for the next two weeks. Sports such as cycling, weightlifting, and Pilates should be avoided, as should long-haul travel.
Once the stockings are removed, expect some bruising and tenderness initially, however, there shouldn’t be too much discomfort.
Have any concerns? Reviews and required scans are provided for an entire year at no additional cost.

Felons are brewing up an exciting community project.
Mark your calendars for the debut of a brand-new, bi-annual makers market, hitting Felons Barrel Hall on Saturday 21 October from 8am to 3pm.
The very aptly named market – The Great Artist Market – will be showcasing over 50 local artists and makers inside Felons iconic beer hall. From ceramicists to picklers and illustrators to furniture makers, you’re bound to leave with something special in hand and a shopping fix like no other (don’t mind if we do!).
While we all love the thrill of an add-to-cart moment, there’s just something special about attending a market, chatting to stall holders, and supporting a local creative. Plus, this couldn’t have come at a better time to get a head start on your Christmas shopping.
So, who’s the creative genius behind this? The Felons team for starters, along with Director, Dean Romeo, and two very seasoned creatives; Claire Ritchie and Tamara Scheiwe, who have selected the market line-up.
According to Claire, “Brisbane is bursting with passionate artists and makers! We need events like The Great Artist Market so we can showcase how talented and unique this city is,” and we couldn’t agree more.
Now, no event at Felons Barrel Hall is complete without the participation of Felons’ kitchen. Thankfully, the crew will be serving up mouth-watering sangas, delectable bakery treats, and freshly brewed coffee to keep your energy up while browsing.
There will also be live music and vinyl DJ sets
making for the perfect soundtrack on the day. And just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, the little ones can enjoy stilt walkers, free face painting, and balloon twisting to keep them amused all day long.
As a final touch, Wallflower Designs will be creating a giant floral installation, and every visitor is encouraged to take a free flower as a token of their first visit to The Great Artist Market on their way out.
THIS IS YOUR GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY TO SUPPORT LOCAL BRISSY – CATCH YOU AT THE GREAT ARTIST MARKET ON SATURDAY 21 OCTOBER!

Adelectable DUO
Meet Maya and Chelsea, the twins behind Food By Maya and Chels.
By BIANCA LICINAWe sat down with the ultimate hostesses, Byron-based twins Maya and Chelsea Sourial (aka @FoodByMayaAndChels), whose flair for home cooking and finesse for styling cultivates lavish tablescapes, impeccable plates, and divine dishes made for sharing. Here’s what they had to say…
Where did your love affair with food begin? We always feel like we are so corny saying this, but it all started in our grandmother’s kitchen. Food has been such an integral part of our family for as long as we can remember — almost everyone cooks!
What inspired you to start Food By Maya and Chels?
It simply started as a passion for delicious food and cooking for our friends and family and then it just kept growing as we sort of became the go-to entertainers for our loved ones.
How would you describe your cooking style?
We inherited our nonna’s obsessive focus on quality ingredients, so this is a huge cornerstone of our cooking style. The amount of effort and nurturing that it takes to grow a single vegetable is actually astounding, so we love finding out what is growing during our regular trips to the markets and formulating recipes and menus around those ingredients.
It’s no secret that Italian is your go-to cuisine, what do you love about it?
We have Italian heritage and some of our earliest memories are of standing around the kitchen table with our nonna, Maria. We also love that it’s very often based around a celebration or a particular time of year, so it’s very in line with seasonal produce, which aligns with our way of cooking.
Where do you seek inspiration for your food styling and tablescapes?
So many places! We have a lot of creative friends who we always turn to for inspiration, as well as looking at what independent Australian homewares brands are doing. Some of our favourite places to source tableware from are Softedge Studio, Stevie Michaels, and of course vintage stores.
What are your non-negotiables for a perfect tablescape?
It needs to have personality! Everything we do is deeply stemmed in creative ideas and sensory experiences, so it’s not just about the tablescape alone, but how that aligns with food that’s being served, the people sitting around the table, and the overall feeling of the event.
How do you operate as a team in the kitchen?
We have been cooking together our whole lives, so working in the kitchen is the easy part! Humour is a big part of how we communicate and we really try to avoid the stressful nature of a standard kitchen environment and keep it light-hearted. Jasper, our newest team member, has brought a wealth of knowledge to the cooking and catering element and it has allowed us to focus heavily on food styling, photography, and other creative parts of the business.
What do you both love the most about what you do?
Knowing that we contribute to people’s lives in terms of memory-making is so important to us. Food is such a special thing to come together and bond over.
What’s next for Food By Maya and Chels? We’re excited to be expanding into some new regions and we have a few exciting updates on the horizon, but we have to stay tightlipped for now Promise you will be the first to know!

TAKE FIVE
Number one tip for home cooks? Start simple and don’t be afraid to make mistakes! Favourite savoury and favourite sweet dish to cook? Pasta – it’s always pasta!
Sweet: tiramisu... if you don’t like it, we probably won’t trust you.
What do you like to do when you’re not cooking up a storm? Head to the beach usually with an esky full of snacks that will sustain a full day in the sun.
What is the most memorable event you have catered? We recently catered a 1980s-style three-metre food table for fashion label Spell. The brief was insane and we got most of our inspiration from an 80s Women’s Weekly mag.
Three words to describe your dynamic as a team... Fun, creative, and confident.
Top food styling tip? We like to use smaller style platters to scatter along the table. You will never find a giant platter on our table.
Al fresco affairs
If outside entertaining has always been a family affair for you and your mum was the ultimate hostess with the mostest, here are the products you need on your table this spring. Any excuse to bring out the nice tableware, right?
By KATE MCGRATH BURGESSJessie McLachlan and Christopher Smith
established their charity Altru in the United States before bringing their passion for providing love, dignity, and compassion to disadvantaged communities over to Australia.
Their annual Altru Festival event is a prime opportunity for Jessie, Christopher, and their generous volunteers, to connect with vulnerable communities across the country and provide them with essential health, legal, and mentorship services, they may otherwise be unable to access.
Empowerment through accessibility
Altru Festival is an annual outreach event with the goal of creating transformative experiences for people in need.
By LAUREN PAYNE“The festival provides immediate access to essential services and pairs each attendee with a volunteer guide, helping to foster meaningful human connections and lasting change,” Jessie explains. “It’s a day to celebrate the human beyond their adversity.”
Although Altru Festival is an annual event that’s already proved to be incredibly helpful for the wider community in the US, Jessie says that it does have an expiry date. The charity’s intention is to move awareness into action and
ensure their effective model of change results in fostering a society where everyone can thrive.
“Our approach is uniquely tailored, with a strong emphasis on proactive and preventative measures, rather than reactive crisis management,” Jessie explains.
“We hope that in the next eight to ten years, we will no longer need to host a festival as we believe poverty living and homelessness are solvable issues.”
Altru Festival will be held on 11 November 2023 at Musgrave Park, Brisbane.
Planning your next trip overseas and want a vibey place to dine on decadent dishes? We’ve pulled together a list of the most ‘Instagrammable’ restaurants around the world, so you can savour your international meal in style.
By LAUREN PAYNESketch, London
If the name Sketch rings a bell, it’s probably because you’ve come across a few images of the restaurants iconic Gallery. The Gallery at Sketch is one of the most popular destinations in London because of its vibrant décor. Once a pastel pink dreamland with sketched artworks adorning its walls, The Gallery has now been revamped into a wonderfully-warm yellow haven, where guests can enjoy a high-tea alongside London-based artist Yinka Shonibare’s handpainted masks, quilts, and 2011 sculptural piece, Alien Woman on Flying Machine.
Dining around THE WORLD
Morning Glory, San Diego
Morning Glory is a breakfast spot ready to shock you awake with incredible food and edgy décor. Enjoy your eggs benedict or classic flapjacks on velvet seats in shades of peach and lavender, while the chandelier literally watches over you (the light becomes a floating eyeball!). Our favourite dish on the menu? An egg salad sandwich with a little bump of caviar on top, of course! There’s also a selection of boozy brunch cocktails to sip on.
Le Procope, Paris
Opened during the arrival of coffee in France in 1686, Le Procope became a hotspot for aristocracy across France. Today, souvenirs from this time have become part of the restaurant’s décor, commemorating its rich history and enticing guests as they dine on traditional French cuisine. As you walk to your table, you’ll find a hat that Napoleon Bonaparte once used to pay for his meal and a fragment of a note Marie Antoinette wrote for her children at 4am on the day of her execution.
Amazonico, Madrid
When you walk through the doors of Amazonico, you’re instantly transported into a decadent slice of the Amazon rainforest, despite being in the middle of metropolitan Madrid. The restaurant is filled with hanging palm trees, lush jungle prints, and a few taxidermy peacocks, to create an exotic atmosphere that perfectly aligns with the fusion of flavours from Brazil, Japan, Argentina, India, China, and Peru.
Palácio Chiado, Lisbon
If you’re looking to dine like royalty, then you should book a table at Lisbon’s Palácio Chiado. Housed in a distinguished palace that was built in mid-1781, the restaurant has taken the centuries-old rooms of the palace and transformed them into an extravagant escape for guests in the heart of bustling Lisbon. With a menu combining iconic Portuguese flavours with international combinations, Palácio Chiado isn’t just a great place to experience a slice of history, it’s also a wonderful spot to learn about the originality and diversity of modern Portugal.

ELEMENTS OF BYRON
By TRACY SINCLAIR b y CHLOE HILL @TOASTED.DAISYChampagne? Check!
We arrive at Elements of Byron on a Friday afternoon, a little early for check in. But it’s okay, according to my watch, it’s ‘pop o’clock’, so we take a seat overlooking the stunning resort pool and order a glass of bubbles. Ah, an instant sense of calm comes over me. And anticipation! The resort promises an unparalleled blend of sustainable luxury and breathtaking natural surroundings and we’re itching to get amongst it.
Creative culinary journey
The perfect night unfolds with an incredible four-course tasting menu with wine pairing at Azure Bar and Grill that showcases the region’s finest produce. Each signature dish is a work of art, celebrating Chef Ebony Baker’s creative flair and imagination. The Octopus Carpaccio, slow cooked for five hours, and accompanied by a native Australian togarashi powder has surprisingly delicate flavours and the Bangalow Sweet Pork served with an apple vanilla bean puree and bitter slaw salad is absolutely worth returning for alone. But it’s the theatrics of the Sugarcane Burn dessert (inspired by the harvesting of sugarcane at this time of year) that ultimately steals the show. We asked for one to share, though I wish we’d asked for one each!
Eco-explorers (well, kind of)
Our deluxe 2-bedroom villa is perfectly positioned backing onto rainforest, providing a gorgeous connection to it from the private bathhouse, indoor and outdoor living areas. And although each villa has its own carpark, we really won’t need the car much at all. In true luxury resort style, you can simply call for a buggy to take you anywhere within the property. We opt for sneakers and set out to explore this breathtaking property set over 50 acres of natural wonderland (and just a short stroll to my fave, Belongil Beach).
Adult-only pool
The central lagoon pool at Elements of Byron is impressive, but we love the option of kid-free poolside lounging, especially during school holidays! The swim up bar is a popular spot to perch and chat with bar staff, however if you’re really in ‘flop and drop’ mode, simply order a meal or drinks from your cabana or lounger and it will miraculously appear!
DESIGN HARMONY:
Lazy Saturday
We plan to spend the day around the pool, but alas, I’ve left my togs at home (wink wink), so it’s off to the Byron Bay shops for a new cozzie. On the way back we pop into the North Byron Hotel and are delighted to discover this hidden treasure. Out the back, the Gardens outdoor area is geared for groups and families (it’s super kid-friendly), with fine water mist everywhere to cool diners down on a hot day. It’s here you can also book a guided pony ride along the beach. We tuck into a ‘really good’ burger, listen to the live music, then walk the short distance back to Elements. I make a mental note to bring my grandson back there next time.
Sippin’ by the fire pit
As the sun goes down, we can’t resist the pull of the resort firepit. Isn’t there something so mesmerising about sitting around a fire? Friday nights feature live music and tonight we’re treated to a local guitarist. It’s a magic way to unwind after a day on the beach or exploring the Byron Bay region. The vibe is friendly and relaxed – guests mix and mingle or simply sit back and enjoy the laid-back ambience with an expertly crafted margarita in hand (okay, that was me!).
Is it really a luxe break without a spa visit?
Our last morning arrives but the pampering hasn’t finished yet. Hubby heads back to the pool and I head to the Osprey Day Spa, where relaxation takes on a whole new meaning. The spa is a haven of tranquility. The open design allows me to soak in the natural beauty of Elements, with established trees and the sound of birds. My 90-minute treatment is simply one of the best I’ve experienced. It’s so comprehensive using LaGaia Australian-made products including the pH Cleanse, Azul Oil Cleanser, Vitamin Complex Cleanser, Vitamin C, Diamond Eye Gel, Renew Serum, Liquid Lift, Beauty Balm, Rose Quartz Nourish and Pearl Mask. I floated out of the spa, so blissed out that I walked past hubby sitting in the waiting area.
Sadly, it’s time to check out, however even just two nights away has rejuvenated us. Just to slow down (and primarily) stay put and enjoy all that Elements offers was wonderful. In a world where luxury and environmental consciousness often collide, Elements of Byron seamlessly marries the two, creating an unforgettable ecoluxe experience that sets a new standard for sustainable travel.

CRUSHFollowing the calm
By RACHAEL SARRAI’m Rachael Sarra and I’m a proud Goreng Goreng woman, culturally connected back to the Bundaberg area, but I’m living and working here in Meanjin Brisbane.
Being a proud First Nation’s woman, creativity and storytelling have always been part of my culture. For me, being able to lean on that side of my culture, not only strengthened my identity but also helped create a world of belonging.
When I was growing up, figuring out who I was and who I wanted to be had everything to do with following the energy that was calm, the energy that was inviting. Being in an art room and being creative is definitely what allowed me to figure out that’s where I felt really calm.
My high school teacher, Wendy Mayes, actually played a really big role in my passion for art and seeing it as something I
could pursue.
My connection between art, creativity, and culture has kind of just turned into this really beautiful, happy place for me.
I did have a few jobs with Indigenous creative agencies that gave me the perspective of knowing that there’s a need for First Nation’s design. I also gained a lot of knowledge around project management and finance.
Weirdly, I met a psychic around this time, and she told me, “You’re going to run your own business.” So, six years ago, I started my business on the side of working full time.
When I first started, it was very simple – I started an art Instagram, posting my art. I was creating works and stories that I was feeling at the time, and it gained a lot of traction. Then I started creating artwork prints and collaborated
with clients.
From there it has evolved to have different products and different collaborations with clients over the years. I think I’m going through a phase now where it’s time to rethink things and I’ll have a bit of a change. But I primarily am an artist, I create work for my own brand, for other brands, for corporates, and I believe people really enjoy who I am and what I stand for.
I think art and design, especially when it’s connected to culture, is so powerful. It’s a way to engage a variety of people and there’s no pre-conceived idea of what it is. I think for me that’s been the most powerful thing as a First Nation’s woman.
My artwork is very vibrant, contemporary, and embedded with rich stories.
Being a proud First Nation’s woman, creativity and storytelling have always been part of my culture.”
