EDITORIAL IN AN INDUSTRY obsessed with appearance, international cover star Robyn Lawley is something of a nonconformist. She thinks that diets are stupid, heels are more effort than they’re worth, and people need to throw their scales in the bin and just be real. Taking on the fashion world and blazing a trail for curvy women, Robyn has graced our cover as the Beauty and Wellness ambassador of Westfield. She exudes passion, strength and an aura of accomplishment that I could not be more excited to share with you all (page 36). Fashion should be something that everybody – no matter their age, size or profession – is encouraged to enjoy. Speaking of accomplishment, it is a wonderful time to be a woman. This month, we feature and celebrate how far women in the workplace have come and raise awareness about how much further we still have to go. Your ability to be awesome lies in how you define yourself and how you choose to live your life, and we all have the option to break that glass ceiling. Now that we’re only a few weeks away from Christmas, we wanted to help you nail your shopping list with our gift guides. Elsewhere in the issue, take a page out of our favourite influencers’ books, find out more about Dion Lee, revel in trend reports for the soiree season ahead and discover where to go for that perfect Christmas buffet. STRUCTURED AND SCULPTURAL It was only natural that a love of clothing and an interest in construction and creating would lead Dion Lee to create his eponymous fashion label, writes Emmy-Lou McKean. AFTER THE WHIRLWIND that was New York Fashion Week, you won’t find Australian designer Dion Lee near a stitch of fabric. The fashion seasons roll along very quickly and Dion admits that while “the whole process is quite evolutionary”, he doesn’t adhere to a specific design process. “I look to art for concept references and tend to find inspiration when I travel and have time to reflect,” he says. Dion explains that his move from his hometown of Sydney to New York’s Tribeca was as much a personal decision as it was a commitment to his brand and a quest to challenge himself and mature as a designer. His recent Spring 17 collection was the first season Dion and his team had shown in New York since relocating the design studio, and the collection has seen an exceptional response from both press and buyers. Only four months prior, Dion’s detailed Resort 17 stylemagazines.com.au
collection graced the runway at Australia’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. While the expert craftsmanship of the collection was structured, seams were folded and left undone, finished with edgy Swarovski crystal detailing and light fluid silks that lend a relaxed feel. Taking traditional tailoring techniques and cleverly constructing cutting-edge yet functional pieces, Dion designs for a woman who is confident, sensual and intriguing. His structured and sculptural designs have caught the attention of many of the world’s biggest influencers. “It’s always really rewarding to see the brand being worn by inspirational women, whether they are celebrities or one of our clients,” Dion says. The excitement around Dion Lee and his charismatic collections continues to soar as women covet the tailored silhouettes and original cocktail frocks. But only time will reveal what the promising talent has up his structured sleeve.
Taking five with Dion Lee Favourite thing to do on a Saturday night? Go out for dinner at a fun restaurant with a few close friends. ...Sunday morning? Exercise of some sort, whether it’s a beach run or yoga, then brunch. What is one of the best shows you’ve watched recently? I recently watched the documentary The Wolfpack, a film about six brothers who lived most of their adolescent lives captive in a Manhattan apartment, who used film to escape their reality. I found their story so fascinating, particularly as they are now filmmakers and artists themselves. Favourite musician at the moment? We just had emerging Norwegian artist Okay Kaya perform at the launch of our our Suit collection in New York. Her music is haunting and she played a mesmerising acoustic set! What is your signature style? Relaxed and low-maintenance. Next dream holiday? Now that our NY show is over, I’m planning a holiday to Italy to recharge!

GLAM FACTOR
STATEMENT GLASSES Perhaps the single most effective way to up the glam factor in your outfit is to add a pair of bold sunglasses. From reflector shades to ladylike cat’s eye frames, they make a statement while adding an air of intrigue to the wearer. JACKETS AS CAPES From the catwalks of Fashion Week to the street, these days it seems the most chic way to wear a jacket is to... not wear a jacket. Letting the jacket drape over your shoulders offers a noncommittal, easy-breezy vibe.

EMBRACE EMBELLISHMENT From statement earrings to gem-encrusted bags and sequins, embellished pieces are totally fair game when styled appropriately. This even goes for daytime – but remember to create some balance with some neutral pieces. INCREASE THE DRAMA Don’t shy away from dramatic flair! Whether it’s an exaggerated silhouette, a bold lip, or a colourcoordinated outfit from head to toe, opt for highimpact and statement-making combinations.

TRADE YOUR SNEAKERS FOR HEELS I’m not saying that sneakers can’t look glamorous (because they can!) but an easy way to amp up the sex appeal is to swap your sneakers for a pair of heels. Not only do they elongate your legs, they also encourage better posture – winning!

career Hannah Doody explores what it means to be a woman in the workforce in 2016.

YOU ENDURED ALL those years of school; you survived the energy drink-fuelled late nights at university; you graduated and landed your first job. Finally, all your hard work has paid off… and then you realise your male colleague is earning twice as much as you. This is the reality for many women in Australia and around the world. Data from the Workplace Gender Equality Agency shows the full-time gender pay gap is currently sitting at 17.2 per cent. That statistic means women are earning, on average, nearly $15,000 less than their male counterparts per year. Melissa Marsden was one of these women. A motivated young girl from Oakey, Melissa had a job at the local bakery, and she saved all her money so she could afford a computer. Moving to Brisbane at 17, she studied a Bachelor of Design at Griffith's Queensland College of Art and began working in interior design. “In a previous role, I was paid almost half that of my male colleagues despite the fact that I had many hats to wear, whereas they had a specific focus in the business. And I was matching or exceeding them in generating new business for the organisation,” says Melissa. NOVEMBER16
Melissa Marsden, Chief Creative and Director at Marsden Collective
Libby Davies, CEO of White Ribbon Australia
“I was told that I was young and that my time would come to earn the equivalent amount,” says Melissa. “But this is a classic example of ambitious young women being undervalued despite their significant contribution.” These experiences drove Melissa to work harder to prove herself in the workplace. Today, Melissa is the director of Marsden Collective, an all-female creative design firm based in Fortitude Valley. Melissa has also recently been named as a finalist in the Entrepreneur category of the 2016 Telstra Business Women’s Awards. While Melissa says there is still a lot of work to do, she is certain that society is taking steps in the right direction. “The discussion is happening for men to be given the same paternal leave that is extended to women,” says Melissa. This change will enable more mothers to return to work and share the parenting and financial workload with their partner. Jackie Woods, Strategy and Engagement Executive Manager at the Workplace Gender Equality Agency, is supportive of this discussion. “Australian organisations are increasingly recognising that gender equality is good for business,” Jackie says. “We are seeing growth in: flexible work arrangements for women and men with caring or other commitments; training and mentoring programs to support women into senior roles; and payroll analyses to identify and address gender pay gaps.” “The [number of] women’s networking groups has grown exponentially,” says Melissa. “And within these groups I have seen a shift from competing with one another to supporting each other and embracing the tall poppy syndrome, lifting one another up.”
stylemagazines.com.au
This female support network is essential, but that doesn’t mean that men should be excluded from the conversation. White Ribbon Australia is an organisation that works to engage men and encourage them to drive social change, especially when it comes to any violence against women in the workplace. “It’s about men standing up and saying, ‘We want to walk alongside women to drive this change,’” says Libby Davies, CEO of White Ribbon Australia. The White Ribbon Workplace Accreditation Program recognises workplaces that are taking active steps to prevent and respond to violence against women and make conditions in a working environment more respectful. “It gives workplaces the skills and expertise to change or build a culture where women feel safe, respected and supported,” says Libby. The Workplace Accreditation Program is based on research by the Australian Government Department of Social Services; 15 criteria must be met in order to achieve certification. Libby says it doesn’t stop there: certified workplaces have KPIs to meet, ensuring that they also “walk the walk” and are held accountable for whether they put their values into action. There are currently 65 White Ribbon accredited workplaces, ranging from smaller companies to larger organisations such as National Rugby League and Telstra. There are currently 120 workplaces undergoing the accreditation process and, of these, 23 are applying to be reaccredited – meaning they have been certified for more than three years. It seems like such a small thing – equal pay for equal work, and ensuring that everyone feels comfortable in the work place. Hopefully some day soon we’ll be able to take such luxuries for granted. With more and more companies putting themselves in the spotlight and taking steps to address gender inequality, the future looks bright.

THE MODERN WORKPLACE Gyms, beds and treadmill desks – the 2016 workplace has all the mod-cons you can imagine and more, writes Caitlyn Spanner. WITH THE DEMAND on employees to work longer hours and be available 24/7 thanks to technology, most of us are working harder than we ever have before. This means that employers have to adopt better, more comfortable workspaces in order to create positive and healthy environments for their hard-working staff Thanks to generational preferences, the necessity for work-life balance, and collaborative technologies such as Cloud sharing, the office as we know it is changing dramatically. Flexibility is possibly the biggest change to the modern workplace and many businesses are offering hotdesks (no assigned seating), remote work, shorter working weeks and modern collaborative spaces to meet this change.
Facebook, for example, offers a full open-plan office complete with art and a rooftop garden of more than nine acres for thousands of its employees to foster collaboration and spontaneity. Here are some out-of-the-box workplace perks: • On-site childcare • Gyms and physical therapies • Games rooms (Google offers its employees a bowling alley and bocce courts) • Support for personal development/study • Counselling • Massages • Discounts (Qantas provides staff with 90 per cent off flights) • Beds • Entertainment
• Daily catering • Treadmill desks and stand-up desks This gives a new meaning to the saying, “Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life.” Not all workplaces have the same capital as Google, Facebook and Qantas. So what can small businesses do to keep their hard-working employees happy? Flexibility doesn’t mean letting your staff take naps every few hours. It can be as simple as allowing them to work from home one day a week. By incorporating a comfortable, welcoming area where employees can meet and collaborate, you could foster the creation of ideas that may not have otherwise transpired.

BEHIND THE SEAMS Cirque Du Soleil is a world filled with heart-stopping magic, captivating characters and death-defying talent, writes Christie Sutherland. IF YOU THINK seeing one Cirque Du Soleil show is enough, think again. On November 24, The Big Top will bring Kooza, the latest daring and dazzling show, to Brisbane and it is unmissable. I was lucky enough to preview Kooza in Sydney last month; it’s a spectacular homage to the traditions of the circus and so much more. Thrilling acrobatics and the art of clowning immerse you in a world of amusement and awe. The international cast of 50 performers presents their talents to a live jazz soundtrack that makes everything a harmonious feat. With nods to Carnivale, the Day of the Dead, military fashion, rock and roll and 1920s glamour, the costumes take you into another dimension. It takes eight hours to iron the costumes every single day, and the care and effort
put in behind the scenes is astonishing. All costumes are custom-made, and 80 per cent of all fabrics are treated and dyed in-house to create individual kaleidoscopic colour palettes for each show. Kooza starts with a trickster bursting into the scene and the surprises do not stop there. Flying artists fling each other into the air into quintuple twists; performers walk on air and defy gravity in the Wheel of Death. The show explores the identity, recognition and power of characters and sets with an electrifying and exotic visual display. Kooza is an entertainment event jam-packed with unforgettable moments that never fail to bring people together.

Easy ways to add value to your home
Place Agent Shannon Harvey shares her top five inexpensive & effective tips. • Clean, clean and clean. Clean as much as you can and as thoroughly as you can, both inside and out. • Nothing gives street appeal like fresh-cut green grass. No dirt. No patches. Ideally, the garden should be maintained with fresh mulch in the garden beds. Pair with fresh flowers in your kitchen for the photo shoot and the first open house. • Fresh paint on 10% of your home. Freshen up a small part of your home if you can’t do a full paint. Pay particular attention to the front door, gate, fence and stairwell. • Maintenance. It seems simple but making sure nothing is broken.

• Styling. If you can’t do the whole house, then a good solution is to focus on areas such as the lounge, dining, kitchen, outdoors and master bedroom. Many stylists will work with your best pieces and just bring in some additional items to save costs too, if you ask.

GUILT-FREE SNACKING Discover a selection of simple, trainer-approved treats to curb your pesky midday hunger pangs, writes Sophie Catsoulis. ON BUSY WORKDAYS, our eyes rarely stray from the multitude of open tabs and documents on our computer screens. Without a second to spare, we ignore our rumbling stomachs and simply reach for the closest snack; if there’s a chocolate bar within reach, it’s safe to say it will be inhaled without a second thought. It will come as no surprise to learn that strenuous schedules are often synonymous with poor eating habits. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Don’t forfeit your appetite or your exercise regimen for an unhealthy or inadequate intake; a little time on a Sunday can save you from your own sweet tooth. A range of pre-made snacks can be stored at work, providing you with delicious, wholesome eats all week long.
MINI QUICHES Take a few eggs, diced tomato, some spinach leaves and a meat of your choice, combine and pour into a cupcake tray to bake – simple!
NUT BUTTER AND SLICED FRUIT It really is as easy as it sounds. Pair your favourite seasonal fruit with a tablespoon of peanut or almond butter and you’re in business.
HEALTHY BERRY MUFFINS Opt for a recipe with wholemeal flour, and low-fat milk and yoghurt. Honey is a great alternative to sugar when you want to satisfy your sweet tooth.
TRIO OF DIPS WITH VEGGIE STICKS Slice some celery and carrot, and whip up a basic selection of dips – we love hummus, beetroot and, of course, guac.
PROTEIN BALLS Packed with hunger-stifling protein and perfectly portable, these little treats are great for any occasion. Our pick: coconut and cacao.
QUINOA SALAD WITH HARD-BOILED EGGS A quinoa salad is both hearty and healthy. Make a big bowl ahead of time and top with fresh hardboiled eggs as desired to banish hunger forever.

E.N.D. H.I.V. World AIDS Day is on a mission to raise awareness of HIV both in the community and on the world stage. WORLD AIDS DAY is perhaps one of the most globally recognised events of the year. Its aim is simple: to educate and raise awareness, and remind the community that HIV is an issue that needs to be addressed as a public health priority. Although Australia’s leading researchers have recently declared the end of AIDS as a public health issue, the continued prevention and treatment of HIV remains a priority. Recent studies indicate that the number of newly-diagnosed HIV infections in Australia has remained relatively stable. While stability in statistics is to be celebrated, the
RED RUN FUN RUN ultimate goal is to achieve no new HIV infections, no more discrimination and the end of AIDSrelated deaths. These dreams can only be realised with support from communities and individuals. With this goal in mind, the theme for the 2016 World AIDS Day campaign is “E.N.D. H.I.V”. This year, non-profit organisation Queensland Positive People is showing support by encouraging communities and individuals to get involved in a number of different events to raise awareness. Full details of local events and opportunities to get involved can be found online.
Show your support by running 5km along the curves of the Brisbane River and New Farm Park from 6.45am on Saturday, November 26. The RED Run is free and open to everyone – runners and non-runners, children and furry friends. Get into the spirit by dressing in red; an Apple iPad mini is up for grabs for the best dressed. All funds raised on the day will be donated to The HOPE Fund, which supports people living with HIV in Queensland. PARKRUN.COM.AU/REGISTER

WOMEN IN VOICE Lively, funny and all-female, Women in Voice is a celebration of vocal talent. RENOWNED FOR SHOWCASING the best female vocal talent in Australia, Brisbane’s iconic cabaret institution, Women in Voice, is returning to the Judith Wright Centre this November. In true style, the lively, funny and all-female celebration is set to feature a formidable line-up of songstresses, showcasing a mix of beloved favourites and exceptional new talent. Joining this year’s line-up are three newcomers: Sahara Beck, a singersongwriter voted Most Popular Female at the 2015 Queensland Music Awards; Alicia Cush, a self-confessed “rogue classical singer”; and Judy Hainsworth, a writer, composer and performer of the hugely successful comedy act #FirstWorldWhiteGirls. Joining them for the season will be Women in Voice royalty Alison St Ledger and Leah Cotterell. Leah says she is excited to be a part of the cast again. “There is a profound satisfaction stylemagazines.com.au
in being a member of any edition of Women in Voice,” says Leah. “The nature of the beast is to crystalise the best, sharpest aspects of what each singer has to offer and then bounce that off the offerings of every other performer.” A Brisbane tradition that started more than 25 years ago to offer exposure to female artists, Women in Voice has helped kickstart the careers of Kate Miller-Heidke, Katie Noonan and Chrissie Amphlett, to name a few. “The creation of each new Women in Voice production is so much more than just another song concert,” Leah says. “It’s an event that sees Brisbane’s enormous vocal talent creating and celebrating together.” Women in Voice will run from November 3 to November 12. CHANGING THE FACE OF FASHION Editor Christie Sutherland chats to Australian supermodel and Westfield Beauty and Wellness ambassador Robyn Lawley about being on the front line of fashion, beauty and wellness. How do you manage to stay in shape with such a demanding lifestyle? I’m a big believer in doing what you can when you can and not stressing about it every single day. When I can, I do yoga and kickboxing. I try and do things that are really fun and interesting but I don’t always get to do it every single day and I don’t beat myself up about it. What are your favourite pre- and post-workout snacks? Bananas and avocados are really my favourite! I’m a big believer in real food in its natural state – I think it tastes better and it is better for you. What’s your favourite summer smoothie suggestion? I have kale in my garden so I make this kale and banana smoothie. You just freeze the bananas prior so it tastes like a banana ice-cream smoothie and it’s a great treat. What are some foods you feed your daughter? I give her really simple and diverse food – she literally eats anything I eat (she even eats sushi!) and because of that, her palate is really diverse and she’s open to everything. As a model and a mum, can you share some of your best-kept secrets with us – any tips for getting that natural glow? I think coconut oil is a great way to achieve the glow and obviously staying out of the sun is important. If you want to tan, you can fake it but I think keeping your skin out of the sun is important. Unfortunately, I can’t be in the sun too much and with my job, I’m in the sun all the time so I often have to put lots of sunscreen on. I love rose cream; it’s really hydrating so I put it on my skin all the time. I keep it quite simple and nourishing. We know that you love DIY beauty products; do you research before creating those recipes or just see what your body reacts to? I’ve tested it over time but what works for me is shea butter and coconut oil. I melt them together and I freeze them, put fresh lavender in them and make a body balm. I started using it when I was pregnant because everything that goes into your skin goes into the baby and it was amazing. It smells good and shea butter is great for staying on your skin. It’s super hydrating!
stylemagazines.com.au
What would you say are your go-to beauty products? I definitely love Nars Chubby lip liners and MAC has a really good Spice lip liner – it’s what all the classic supermodels use on their lips. I love Lash Star by Tracy Murphy; it’s a great mascara that I think is coming to Australia soon. I just try and keep it really simple day-to-day and let my skin breathe. What advice can you share with women who may struggle with obtaining a positive body image? I definitely feel for women out there. It’s a hard world and I can get consumed with social media. Sometimes you need to take a step back and have a breather. You need to go outside, you need to go into nature and realise it’s not everything. You just have to be yourself. Don’t do diets – they never work, they never will. Once you find your natural set weight by eating natural, good-quality food that makes you feel good, you’re going to feel good about yourself and you won’t crave sugary foods.
WHEN I STARTED AS A MODEL 10 YEARS AGO, DESIGNERS WEREN’T USING MODELS WHO WERE MY SIZE; THE CHANGE IS REMARKABLE. I’M REALLY HONOURED AND REALLY GRATEFUL. How do you dress for your body shape? Dress for your size. I have fun with fashion. I go crazy all the time and sometimes I’ll dress really glam; other times I’ll dress like a boy. Just have fun with it because fashion allows you to express yourself and it’s a great way of accentuating your curves. I think you should be loud and proud. [Fashion] really lets you show who you are. What does it mean for you to be the Beauty and Wellness ambassador for Westfield? It’s a huge honour, and as a 14 to 16 size model, it’s never been done before, so it’s amazing to really see and witness the change and finally it’s happening. When I started as a model 10 years ago, designers weren’t using models who were my size; the change is remarkable. I’m really honoured and really grateful. WESTFIELD.COM.AU/QLD

STYLISHLY SACHA
“Once I started putting my dresses on the market.. the proof was in the pudding.”
We sat down with Brisbane designer Sacha Drake to talk about her journey and 15 years of success in the fashion industry. SACHA DRAKE ALWAYS wanted to be a fashion designer. She started drawing pictures of dresses from a young age, and when she was just 14 years old, Sacha was taught to sew and make dress patterns by an experienced tailoress. After working in a range of countries and industries throughout her 20s, Sacha decided she needed to exercise her creativity. Sacha was a size 14; from personal experience, she knew there was a significant gap in the fashion market for girls with a fuller figure. And so her namesake label was born. “Once I started putting my dresses on the
market and they were selling out, the proof was in the pudding,” Sacha says. What started as a range of party dresses for size 12 to 14s has now expanded to include a whole wardrobe for all shapes and sizes. Sacha says it’s her ability to adapt that has enabled her to survive
in the ever-changing market. “You get pushed and pulled to where the market wants you to sit,” Sacha says. “Right now, we’re going through a phase where people don’t dress up as much – the athleisure trend – but I’ve been able to explore versatility and flexible fits that offer value to the customer.” Sacha says there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to business – it all comes down to trial and error. “I don’t look at other brands or trends too much,” Sacha admits. “Personally, I’m not on Instagram, or online checking out everyone else. It overwhelms me and it makes me insecure. I just follow my nose with what appeals to me.” And with nearly 15 years of success under her belt and constant stunning designs, it’s clear that Sacha Drake has discovered a winning formula. MODERN FESTIVITIES
THE ORIGINS OF COFFEE
TAKE IT OUTSIDE
WITH THE FESTIVE season nearly upon us, it’s time to start preparing for the upcoming corporate and family soirees. Whether it’s an intimate gathering of your closest friends or a gala dinner with your entire office, this season will see an emphasis on guest interaction and decorative themes. The set-up of your event should have your guests well and truly in the festive frame of mind. Interactive food stations enable guests to sample and create their own menu. Scattered lounge areas for cocktail-style celebrations are important, as they encourage socialising while giving guests the opportunity to relax. This season will see metallic highlights bring a modern twist to our Christmas classics. Think clusters of pine cones in shades of gold and silver metallic tones. Structured Perspex Christmas trees are a great option, and you can incorporate little details with beautifully patterned and textured linens. Combined with festive cheer, these elements will make this soiree season a memorable one.
“SINGLE ORIGIN COFFEE” is a term that has well and truly stood the test of time. It refers to coffee that comes from a single known geographical origin or, more specifically, a single farm. You can break this down even further, to single origin micro lot coffees, which derive from a single crop on one farm. There are several factors that can affect availability of single origin beans, including seasonality of the harvest, environmental changes and pests or disease. For example, Aida Batlle’s Finca Kilimanjaro traditionally harvests from November to March, whereas Boyce Harries’ Chania Estate French Mission has a small harvest fly crop in May to July and main harvest October to December. At the end of the day, nobody can say that one particular single origin is better than another. It is really up to the individual. But what we do know is that buying single origins can be a refreshing and thoroughly enriching experience as you discover flavours of particular origins that resonate with you.
WHAT’S THE ONE thing that’s better than having a delicious dinner? Having a delicious dinner outside in summer! Picture this: it’s a balmy summer evening and you’re enjoying fresh seafood, salads and white wine with a group of friends. This is just what Queensland summer is all about. Warm days and temperate evenings make the perfect setting for a light lunch or a dinner party with friends. More people than ever are investing in their outdoor lifestyles to ensure they have a beautiful space to entertain and relax in, especially when we spend so much time outdoors in our state. At Designer Kitchens, our fastest growing renovation area is the outdoor kitchen. Typically, these areas are built under existing roofing or can be purposefully left as open-air adjoining kitchen or living space – often shared with movable walls, being partitioned or utilising sliding doors or panels. As both winner and runner-up in the HIA 2016 Best Outdoor Kitchen Award, Designer Kitchens can bring your dreams to life.

GET WHAT YOU WANT!
GOOD VISION FOR LIFE
THE STYLE OF SELF-CONFIDENCE
WANT TO KNOW something really scary? Christmas is right around the corner. But stay calm, as we have an idea to make sure you get the gift you deserve, beautifully wrapped and waiting for you under the tree. First, let’s make sure that you’re on Santa’s nice list. You are? Great! If your partner is the practical type and has been known to surprise you with romantic appliances, then don’t leave anything to chance. A wish list card is the perfect way to ensure your partner stays within the ballpark of what you want. It’s a good idea to list at least three options in ascending price brackets, so your partner can still maintain an element of surprise. You never know – they just might start to get adventurous with it! Xennox Diamonds now offers a wish list magnet that you can strategically place on your fridge, where your partner is sure to see it every day. It’s a subtle way to make sure you get spoilt this Christmas. Visit our showroom and pick up a magnet today!
GOOD VISION IS essential for driving, playing sports and fulfilling work and school tasks, which is why it’s so important that children, teens and adults incorporate regular eye examinations into their general health regimen. During an eye examination, your optometrist will assess your visual clarity while also looking for signs of possible eye conditions or disease. If your eye health is carefully monitored throughout life, there is an increased likelihood that vision loss can be prevented. At our store, we are often asked how we ensure good vision for life. Although this can never be guaranteed, taking preventative steps such as wearing sunglasses when outdoors and using appropriate eye protection when required in the workplace, at school or at home is encouraged. Know your eyes; understand potential warning signs and look for any changes in your vision. Eat for your eyes; include plenty of dark green, leafy vegetables and fish to increase your intake of vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc and beta-Carotene.
SO HERE’S THE lowdown on suit jacket lapels. The standard on most suits and jackets is the notch lapel. This style is common on singlebreasted suits and is known for being a classic and professional look for business suits and sports jackets. If you often opt for the notch lapel, have a think about why. What does it really say about you? The word “classic” also has another meaning: “standard”. Who wants to be standard? The conservative type of man does, but is that really you? If not, get yourself a suit or jacket that shows your inner confidence. Show people you don’t care what they think. One way to stand out from the crowd is to wear a two-button wide peak lapel jacket in either a solid or bold check – think Tom Ford! Another alternative is to wear bright colours and mix patterns. Consider the powerful striped suits of confident barristers you know. Spring racing is upon us and it’s the perfect time to let your inner confidence take centre stage. Think bold, dress bold!

FOOD+DRINK A STONE’S THROW AWAY
The blackened belly of Bangalow Sweet Pork. STYLE STANDOUT…
Tumbling Stone has a philosophy of no-nonsense delicious dinning, writes Christie Sutherland.
THE JOHNSON HOTEL, an initiative of the Art Series Hotel Group, was inspired by the work of Australian abstract artist Michael Johnson. Just a stone’s throw away from the CBD in Spring Hill, Tumbling Stone is not your typical hotel restaurant. The prints adorning the walls of the hotel and restaurant tell the story of how Tumbling Stone came alive and the open, industrial space is perfect for the Queensland setting. With a focus on delicious and casual dining, Tumbling Stone’s relaxed vibe and quality local produce makes it the ideal meeting spot for friends, family and co-workers. This new restaurant leaves no stone unturned in my eyes, and I was ready to try everything. The seasonal menu is made to be shared tapas style; everything is light and full of flavour, and there’s something for everyone, from small share plates to larger ones. I started with the fenugreek spiced squid with saffron emulsion. It’s sweet, fresh, crunchy and created with perfect seasoning. I followed it up with the pulled ham croquettes with grilled leek aioli. The croquettes are smooth, holding a hint of honey and comfort. Delving further into the mains was a challenge 52
but the fried chicken with pickled cucumber, cherry and tarragon sauce had me at hello, with the cherry glaze cutting through the tender meat. The blackened belly of Bangalow Sweet Pork held my gaze as well. The chili, kimchi and finger lime was perfect, charred with a deep rich glaze – I could not get enough! We chose the heirloom baby carrots, preserved lemon labneh and toasted seeds to accompany all the protein; the wholesome vegetables are delicate and moreish and one to not leave off your list. For dessert, we chose to go both fresh and decadent. The poached rhubarb crème brûlée with ginger snap was an obvious choice: cracked to perfection, smooth and refined. The peach granita with white chocolate mousse and cinnamon sable arrived next. It was like a rich and buttery deconstructed cheesecake; the biscuits grounded the dish with a tang and the light raspberry granita cut through the thickness of the mousse. I could have stayed for hours. Brisbane, meet your perfect open dining room. TUMBLING STONE, THE JOHNSON HOTEL 477 BOUNDARY ST, SPRING HILL P 3085 7474 TUMBLINGSTONE.COM.AU

DINING DELIGHTS With the festive season fast approaching, Superior Fruit owner Peter Maniatis reveals how you can create the ultimate dinner party.
HEAD TO THE STYLE MAGAZINES WEBSITE TO CHECK OUT PETER’S RECIPES FOR THE ULTIMATE DINNER PARTY!
USE SEASONAL PRODUCE Peter says using fresh, in-season produce makes preparing and cooking it so much easier. “I don’t really look for recipes; I like going to a good deli or fruit shop and getting inspired by the fantastic products and produce available,” says Peter. “A good shop should inspire you to want to create something special. Overseas cookbooks are often out of sync with what we have available locally at the time.”
For me, writing down the schedule of what needs to be cooked and prepared [gives] you a better understanding of how to plan out the meal spacing,” he says.
MAKE A PLAN Many people make the mistake of going overboard and trying to impress their guests with complicated dishes, but Peter says it’s important to stick to what you know. “Prepare food you are comfortable making. Keep it really simple and plan out your oven schedule.
PUT NIBBLES OUT Keep your guests happy while you’re in the kitchen by putting out some nibbles. “I always have things like antipasti, bread and a few small starters on the table before serving to quench hunger pains and allow you extra time to prepare if you’re behind schedule,” Peter says.

ENJOY There are no rules when it comes to food so just relax and enjoy yourself. “If there’s a tragedy in the kitchen, laugh it off. And if all else fails, order a last-minute pizza,” Peter advises. “Food is all about socialising and enjoying the company of good friends and family – if you’re not laughing enough, pour another wine!” SUPERIOR FRUIT AND WENDY’S KITCHEN 365 HONOUR AVE, GRACEVILLE P 3379 7508 FACEBOOK/SUPERIORFRUIT

PERFECT PAIRINGS The foodies at Claret House share the three golden rules of wine pairing. THE HISTORIC CHARM of Teneriffe’s Woolstores is the perfect backdrop for Claret House, an intimate wine bar that is home to experts who know a thing or two about pairing the perfect drop with your meal. Spring often brings a shift to lighter, fresher and crisper wines, and Claret House’s three new BK wines make the perfect accompaniment to their new-season dishes. So whether you want to nail that dinner party or you just want look impressive on your next date, here are a few cardinal rules for matching wine and food. Sparkling wine: perfect with salty foods. Most dry sparkling wines, like Claret House’s Petit Natural, actually have a faint touch of sweetness – in this case, a faint hint of pear flavour. That makes them extra-refreshing when served with salty foods, such as Claret House’s rustic-style pork rillettes and apple sauce.
Claret House chefs Danule Taylor and Matthew Pennefather
A few cardinal rules with matching wine and food! Salmon tartare with parmesan crisp
Pinot Grigio: pairs with light fish dishes. Light seafood dishes, like the seared scallops, celeriac puree and chorizo from Claret House, seem to take on more flavour when matched with equally delicate white wines, such as the BK Pinot Grigio with its crisp apple and pear flavours.
FOODIE TRENDS With different food trends emerging every week, it’s hard to keep up! Emmy-Lou McKean reveals what you’ll be eating and sipping on this season. POKÉ BOWLS No, this is not a Pokémon-related meal. Poké (po-kay) is actually a simple and addictive Hawaiian dish that has been around for centuries, made of cubed and soy-marinated raw fish eaten over a bowl of rice. Recently, trendy New York and Los Angeles restaurants have put a new spin on the bowls, incorporating ingredients such as quinoa, tofu, chicken and beef, as well as traditional protein favourites salmon, tuna and swordfish. And now this trend has finally reached Australian shores! The Ole Group is bringing Suki (Brisbane’s first poké bowl bar) to South Bank later this month. COLOURFUL CUISINE All our food and drinks are starting to appear in every colour of the rainbow. From pink pitaya bowls and green matcha burger buns 56
Dry rosé: for rich, oily or cheesy dishes. The vibrant BK Rosé, which is 100 per cent Pinot Noir, is bone-dry in style, with hints of watermelon. This wine matches perfectly with the salmon tartare and parmesan crisp, as the rosé cuts smoothly through the rich oils in the salmon to provide the ideal palate cleanser. CLARET HOUSE WINE BAR 5/36 VERNON TCE, NEWSTEAD P 3257 0402 CLARETHOUSE.COM.AU
Frosé has quickly become a summer cocktail favourite!
to yellow turmeric flavouring and red velvet lattes, the latest trend also offers many health benefits! One of the exciting trends on its way is purple bread. Scientifically-created, this bread is digested 20 per cent slower than regular white bread to reduce sugar spikes after eating. The purple bread is pumped up with antioxidants extracted from black rice, and is being hailed as the first baked superfood. FROSÉ If you haven’t heard of the biggest trend to hit the bars this season, then it’s time to get excited for possibly the best fruity cocktail ever. Frosé (a frozen rosé slushie) has quickly become a summer cocktail list favourite, as it is the perfect beverage to cool you down on those balmy Brisbane nights. NOVEMBER16

all about beauty The professionals at Brush and Blush are here to help create a more beautiful you. WITH SO MANY beauty salons on the market, choosing one to trust can be overwhelming. Amber Moratti wanted to make a difference with her business: the Brush and Blush studio in Coorparoo allows clients to prepare for their special occasion with a full range of hairdressing, tanning and beauty services on offer. It all started when Amber, then working as a hairdresser and colour technician, realised she had a talent for special-occasion hairdos. “Up-styling became my thing,” says Amber. “But I was only completing half of the look; it seemed only natural to utilise my Fine Arts background and learn everything I could about makeup artistry.” Up-styling and air-brush makeup are just some of the signature services on offer at the Brush and Blush salon, along with style cuts, colours, blowouts, hair extensions, spray tanning, brow shaping and tinting, and lash applications.

Brush and Blush makes preparing for every event simple – weddings, parties, school formals, race days and hen’s nights are a total breeze.
Amber’s party prep tips: priming your hair is as important as priming your face before makeup. Keep smudge-proof lipstick on hand!
The team can even accommodate larger groups or corporate functions to ensure that everyone is party-ready. Take the stress out of your preparation with the endless possibilities from Brush and Blush. BRUSH AND BLUSH 31 LANCASTER ST, COORPAROO P 0439 871 718 BRUSHANDBLUSH.COM.AU
transform your look For the girl on the go, a few simple accessories can be a godsend, writes Sophie Catsoulis. RUNNING LATE – we’ve all been there. The dreaded dash from the office to an event, from brunch to a birthday or from the gym to a girlfriend’s house. It’s almost impossible to dress for every occasion on the everchanging (and ultra-crammed) spring schedule. But forget feeling underdressed; a few easy additions can entirely alter an outfit to cater to your desired dress code. The importance of the boot of your car cannot be stressed enough. This overlooked space can serve as a mini closet, containing all of the essential items for the ultimate quick outfit transition. Keeping a few choice accessories on hand can help you can take your look from day to night, work to play without a second thought. Start with a corporate ensemble, complete with a pencil skirt, blazer and stylemagazines.com.au
ballet flats. Start by swapping the flats for heels and the blazer for a biker jacket. Run a brush through your tangled locks and spice things up by adding a bold lip and fresh coat of mascara. Add a choker and a splash of a scent, place the necessities in your clutch and you’re ready for anything.
Fill your boot with the following: A classic pair of nude pumps; an emergency cosmetics kit (complete with bright lipstick, concealing pen and mascara); a leather jacket; statement jewellery; a hair brush; a neutral clutch; a pair of sunglasses; a basic belt and, of course, a fragrance.

HOW TO TREAT YOUR VEINS
THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX
SPRING YOUR HAIR TO LIFE
WHAT YOU NEED to know: spider veins are small, often red thread veins under the surface of the skin. Here’s how to get the best results from your treatment: • Have a Doppler ultrasound examination in order to identify if any subsurface veins are causing the spider veins. Failure to treat these correctly can lead to increased rush of “matting” – a complication that aggregates the appearance of veins. • Your treating doctor should be notified of any medications that you take, including supplemental therapies. Certain supplements such as fish oil can sometimes interfere with the treatment and provoke matting. • Compression stockings should be used to supplement treatment. No one likes to wear them but they do mean better results! • Keep in mind that cosmetic treatment of spider veins is never completely permanent. Over time, new veins might develop and you may need a maintenance session in a few years to keep those legs looking great.
UNCONVENTIONAL THINKING LEADS to new perspectives, novel and creative outcomes that increase work productivity, and the ability to flourish in life. Although some believe that quality creative thinking is an innate skill (and this may be the case for a few people), it is certainly something many work actively to develop. Here are some simple ways to think outside the box: • Change up your regular routines. • Trial different working environments to see what inspires you. • Start to become more curious and brainstorm ideas for a variety of projects. Try carrying a notebook, phone or camera to record ideas. • Spend time with positive and creative people but also make time to work on relaxing, observing and daydreaming. • Read broadly on many different topics and notice your thinking in your downtime. • Reduce negativity by taking risks and being OK with failure. • Deliberately practise whatever works best for you and celebrate your success!
SPRING IS FINALLY here and so is the heat, meaning it’s time to freshen those spring locks! In warmer weather, blondes tend to find that their hair can become a little brassier than normal. Using a blonde shampoo at home and booking in to get your hair toned with your stylist between appointments is ideal for maintaining fresh locks. With the change of season comes a change in trends; in the warmer months, we see many people opting for creamy blondes rather than ashy tones. Highlights and lowlights are an amazing way to create dimension and will give your hair a more soft and natural look. For something a little different, try the shadow root method, which tones down the roots for a less noticeable look than foils. At Hair of Eden, we’re all about changing things up. Home is where the waves are, and I’m not talking about the beach. This season, textured waves are the most coveted hairstyle along with loose braids and messy buns – all of which lend a more relaxed feel.

PARTY SEASON PREP
FEELING PRESSURE?
SECRETS TO LOVING YOU
WE OFTEN SEE clients booking last-minute treatments before a big event. Cosmetic procedures generally require some time to take effect and, in some cases, the best results are seen a month or two after the procedure. If you have a busy social calendar during racing season or in the lead-up to Christmas, now is the perfect time to book your cosmetic injectable and skin rejuvenation procedures. The most common treatments are dermal fillers and muscle relaxant injections. With more than 20 years of experience, I have the pleasure of providing my clients with a healthy and relaxed natural glow rather than obvious enhancement. If you’re thinking about cosmetic procedures but fear the unwanted artificial look, book in for a complimentary consultation to discover exactly how you can achieve the best natural version of you. At Cosmetic Image Clinics, we promote a positive ageing approach to our treatments that ensures a natural outcome.
PRESSURE AT WORK is increasing at a rapid pace and sometimes it seems unrelenting and never-ending. Absenteeism and sick rates are proof this is a real epidemic in workplaces. But have you stopped to think about why we are feeling this pressure? A friend of mine recently pointed out that there is a difference between accountability and pressure. If you are feeling pressure, chances are someone is putting their accountability on to you, or you might be taking accountability when you shouldn’t be. At work, we’re all accountable and responsible for specific things; sometimes we just need to assess whether or not this pressure is necessary. Focusing on your specific role will help ease the stress and you will find that you actually enjoy the work you do. If you are feeling stressed, you need to reassess your situation to find out if this pressure is being laid on externally or internally. You then need to re-focus and concentrate on the work for which you are ultimately responsible.
THE VAST MAJORITY of women are not happy with their bodies, but losing weight isn’t always the best solution. Australian supermodel Robyn Lawley shared her body image tips with me this month and I wanted to take a moment to reflect on what body confidence really is. No matter your size or your weight goals, shifting the focus to “being healthy” rather than “being thin” leads to better long-term outcomes for your body and mind. When you look good, you feel good. Getting dressed is so much easier when you know what works. Showcase the parts of your body that you love and get advice on how to do this. Set goals: Increase your daily activity in increments. Achievable goals will keep you motivated and, in turn, happy and healthy. Change your inner dialogue: We drain so much of our confidence with our own negative thoughts. Flick them away and replace with encouraging thoughts. Be you and enhance what you love about yourself. Do not let outside influences dictate your confidence negatively; take a reality check.

TRANSFORM YOUR BODY
BY NOW, WE have all been subjected to the surge of anti-sugar campaigns. And somehow we’re expected to just quit cold turkey. However, all these campaigns neglect to mention how difficult it is to resist the call of a chocolate bar during a hectic day at work. Instead of turning your back on your tastebuds altogether, why not search for something a little healthier that still satisfies your sweet tooth? Swap ice-cream for acai, soft drinks for smoothies and chocolate bars for bliss balls – all calorie-conscious, all natural, and all sugary sweet! Satisfy your sweet tooth with a dose of healthy sugar. Believe me, it’s a whole lot more satisfying than it sounds!

REDEFINING BEAUTY Evelyn Orford gives us the lowdown on cosmetic tattooing. AS TIMES AND styles change, so too does the art of cosmetic tattooing. In the last decade or so, techniques, products and equipment have seen a dramatic evolution. One of the most common cosmetic tattoo services is eyebrow tattooing. Some clients still favour the more dramatic, solid brow, which can look great if it’s done well! But a softer approach to brow tattooing is quickly becoming popular with women of all ages. You’ve probably heard the terms feathering, powdering, shading, hair-stroke and micro-blading before. All of these refer to a new generation of eyebrow tattooing that produces a beautiful and incredibly natural-looking result. Everyone’s time is precious and facial tattooing stylemagazines.com.au
is the perfect timesaver for busy clients who always wants to look expertly-groomed with minimal fuss. Getting a cosmetic tattoo doesn’t have to be a scary process. It’s important to have a consultation first so you can fully discuss your expectations and desired results. After this, you should feel confident knowing you will be in the hands of an experienced industry professional. It’s only natural to want to look your best, and
with the help of some expertly-applied cosmetic tattooing, waking up looking great every day (and staying that way) can be made simple. Let the daily drudgery of makeup application become a thing of the past; all you’ll need is a slick of lip gloss before you head out the door! HIT REFRESH Wesley LifeShape Clinic is here to help you hit the refresh button and start over with a new perspective on weight loss.
REGARDLESS OF THE time of year, weight loss is an ongoing process, not an overnight transformation. If you have spent 2016 dabbling unsuccessfully with diet fads, it might be time to refresh your health goals with some simple steps. Less is more. Sometimes big changes start with minor shifts. Instead of making drastic declarations about your health, make small, measurable changes to your daily routine. These changes can be as simple as going for a walk on your lunch break, or opting for water instead of soft drink or alcohol when dining out. Planning is key. Being organised with your meals is the best way to ensure you are consuming a healthy, balanced variety of food. Buy a food diary and plan your meals at the start of the week. Treat yourself. It’s important to reinforce
RATHER THAN USING FOOD AS A REWARD, TREAT YOURSELF IN OTHER WAYS.
your progress. As you work towards your goals, acknowledge your successes, both big and small. Rather than using food as a reward, treat yourself in other ways, such as booking a massage or buying some new gym clothes. Get support. Having a strong support network is essential when making lasting changes to your lifestyle. Qualified health professionals can help you achieve safe and sustainable weight loss. The reality is that weight maintenance is a lifelong journey, but getting the right advice can make everything a lot easier. There is no better time to forget your fad diet duds and hit the reset button on your weight loss plan! WESLEY LIFESHAPE CLINIC P 1800 567 348 WESLEYLIFESHAPE.COM.AU

DO YOU WANT a glowing, long-lasting tan? First things first: exfoliate. A buildup of dead skin or old fake tan can cause a patchy look. Next, make sure you choose the right tan for you. From cream tans (great for dry skin) to mousse (great for normal to oily skin) and sprays (if you don’t want to get your hands dirty), opt for a tan to suit your needs. Remember: always use a tanning mitt to avoid streaks when using cream or mousse. Finally, always moisturise to maintain your tan! To find out more, get in touch with the experts below. DESIGNED FOR SUCCESS Do you have a challenging property? This Queensland specialist builder tackles the jobs most builders wouldn’t dream of. WHEN IT COMES to creating a new home, many people assume that building on locations with spectacular views or inner-city postcodes is simply not worth the hassle. The team at Evermore Designed Homes doesn’t believe there’s such a thing as “too hard”; they thrive on challenging and rewarding properties. Traditionally, there are three types of difficult sites that people will avoid. It just so happens that these are the sites Evermore Designed Homes loves. The first is sloped land. Many people will be deterred by the lack of vision it inspires and the extra building costs it incurs. Evermore Designed Homes works closely with clients to provide a cost-effective process and create a property with
value and enviable views worth the effort. A major renovation project is something else people tend to avoid, as the thought of the project can be quite overwhelming. However, thanks to the popularity of home renovation shows, many Brisbane homeowners are now looking to remodel their properties into something more modern and profitable. Current popular renovations include the raising of properties for the addition of extra floors or garage ports and the demolition of certain aspects of the house to improve flow or incorporate a more
modern, open-plan design. Evermore Designed Homes is also keen to tackle properties of all sizes; there’s no home too big or too small for this dedicated team. They have a plethora of designs under their belt that prove living in a narrow lot can be more rewarding than you’d expect. Their design solutions consider the desire for maximum livability, space, privacy and the ability for the house to blend in with its surrounds. After hours of trawling through social media for inspiration, I had an epiphany. Why should I spend my time searching for something simply to adhere to a trend? Art is all about expression. Whether it costs $50 or $5000, whether it was painted by Picasso or a preschooler, only one thing matters: you have to want to look at it every day.
