NOTE T
here’s no doubt our cover shoot set the tone for this month’s indulge issue! No longer are the burbs’ excluded from the buzz of the cityscape, they’re becoming metropolis magnets within themselves. As a premier destination of international brands, Westfield Chermside is a prime example of just this, attracting global fashion retailers all under one roof, kilometres away from the CBD. It’s an indulging experience to see the centre come to life (page 17). Speaking of – we’re taking you on an indulgent journey this month in more ways than one. It certainly got our team chatting about what it means. What does indulging mean to you? Is it more time with your family or perhaps just yourself? Or is it simply less time on your phone? Brisbane locals weighed in on the social media debate and spilled all on page 52. As the year begins to wind up, many of us seek an escape. I was lucky enough to have an early taste of such a getaway across the ditch in Lombok (page 72). But for a slice of something a little closer to home, Paddington is a great place to start; mixing traditional foundations of Brisbane with the contemporary influences from the wider landscape all in one place on page 54. Before we all get run off our feet with the craziness of the season, don’t forget to take a moment to indulge, however that means to you, with a little inspiration from the pages inside...

The sweet life
From how we live to what we wear, what we eat and even how we behave, owning your indulgences is a kind of satisfying freedom. We believe the best way in life is to take some time to truly indulge. Find out how these luxurious leaders do just that in life and work.
NATASHA AND ALEX SCHWEITZER JEWELLERY DESIGNERS OF NATASHA SCHWEITZER What is your biggest indulgence? It would have to be jewellery, especially diamonds. But apart from that, spending a little extra time in bed reading a good book.
JAMES AND HAYLEY BAILLIE OWNERS OF BAILLIE LODGES What is your biggest indulgence? Travel! We also see it as a way of life that is essential to both Hayley and I personally but also to us as a family, and to each of our four boys. We travel as much as we can, both locally and overseas, to give the boys a real education and enjoyment of the world around us. What is the perfect way to unwind? A stay at Silky Oaks Lodge to
experience a genuine sense of place and a real immersion in the destination. It’s a time to step away from the busyness of everyday life and spend time with the people most important – be it family or friends or just taking some time out for yourself. What would you say is the most important part of selfindulgence? Time. It’s a precious resource and too often we don’t make time for ourselves or our loved ones.
How did you start a career in jewellery design? Our mother Marion Schweitzer is a jeweller, so I guess you could say that it was in our blood. Creativity was always a huge part of our lives, so when we started designing pieces for ourselves to wear out to events we noticed that people really loved the difference in our designs, and the brand grew from there. Why pamper yourself with jewellery? Jewellery is a wonderful indulgence because it usually has a special significance for the wearer. We attach people and cherished memories to each piece.

orget the Queen’s Birthday; Oscar Oscar Salons is turning 30 and as royalty in the Australian hair industry, this is an affair to be commemorated. Celebrity hairdresser and two-time Australian Hairdresser of the Year, Oscar Cullinan has turned the hair empire into a dominant force, a cut above the rest.“It’s with great pride we opened our 14th salon in Brisbane City this year. Timely, as I opened my first salon here 30 years ago,” says Cullinan. “Now we are giving the city back our expertise in fashion
forward colour techniques and specialty services.” With three decades of award-winning and glamorous tresses under their tool belt, Oscar Oscar Salons are home to Australia’s best hairdressers who are highly sought after for esteemed fashion events and the pages of leading fashion magazines. Stunning hair is a given here, and they also aim to create Australia’s best hairdressing experience with luxury services, the world’s best hair products, relaxing treatments, indulgent refreshment menus and sleek salon designs. Oscar Oscar know best how to maintain their roots and are bringing their birthday back to where it all began. Salon Partner of the flagship QueensPlaza salon, Danny Luu, leads his skilled team alongside Cullinan to manifest the look you want in the finest way. “At Oscar Oscar Salons our consultation process is fundamental in gaining trust and providing a clear understanding of each individual’s hair and goals.” he says. “We want to understand the ‘endgame’ desire and work on a realistic plan to achieve it without compromising hair health.” Trends are always at the forefront of the salon education and they are now seeing colour resembling natural, highlighted tones like the Beyoncé-approved 90s bright face frame with a darker back. The secret to their colour longevity and radiance is the tailored Kérastase Fusio-Dose treatment to instantly transform hair for up to six weeks. From bespoke balayages, extensions, straightening to precision cuts, Oscar Oscar stylists have been hand-selected to deliver the best. OSCAR OSCAR SALONS BOOK VIA OSCAROSCAR.COM.AU

THE RIGHT
kind of shady Where sun safe meets style.
F
rolicking across golden sand to crisp blue waves under the radiant summer sun is an image that is so quintessentially Australian it could stop and say, “G’day.” But a less talked about aspect of the lazy luxe lifestyle, is the threat the Australian sun poses to your skin. When resident of the sunshine state, Alyshia Morris, had a melanoma scare in 2013, she was
determined to find a way to bridge the gap between sun smarts and sun style. From this drive, Shade Swim was born. Whether you’re splashing at the beach, lazing by the pool or brunching after a surf, Shade Swim will have you bursting with confidence because not only will you look splendid, but your skin will be protected too. “I want to encourage women to be sun safe and for them to realise they can do this while remaining stylish,” Alyshia says. “Our swimsuits have been carefully designed to fit your shape as you are right now, so women don’t feel they have to change their shape to fit the swimsuit!” Alyshia says. The Australian-made swimsuits
have been embraced by women from sizes 8 to 18 for their sun safe UPF 50+ fabric, innovative Smooth Firm Tighten technology, sustainable Italian Vita Luxe fabric and gorgeous designs. “Shade Swim is about loving and protecting the skin you’re in,” Alyshia says. The latest Endless Summer collection features a range of flattering and fashion forward sleeve lengths, colours and hand-designed prints from leading Australian textile designer, Britt La Spina. The swimsuits all have built in bust support for A-G cups, meaning there’s no need for women to wear a bikini top underneath for extra support. To practice what she preaches, Alyshia keeps it homegrown where she can. “I’m passionate about supporting other local businesses and ensuring all the swimsuits are made here in Australia. I love working with other small creatives like Britt La Spina,” Alyshia says. “Britt’s designs are fun yet sophisticated and it was great collaborating with her to create the timeless Leopard and the feminine Rosita Floral print.” SHADE SWIM P 0478 175 528 SHADESWIM.COM.AU

Welcome to Brisbane’s only shopping destination for international fashion, all under one roof.
U
ndoubtably the go-to space for effortless trans-seasonal fashion and resort style dining, Westfield Chermside is keeping their finger on the pulse when it comes to unique fashion and beautiful surroundings to eat, shop and play. Housing international brands such as Zara, H&M, UNIQLO, JD Sports and Sephora, the centre provides a unique and inspiring way to mix and match across brands. Westfield Chermside stylist, Leticia Gaskell, says the benefits are endless with all the international retailers together. “It’s taken the complicated out of building your wardrobe. Shopping well within these fast fashion retailers allows you to select pieces that are both trendy yet timeless and will take you from season to season.” One of the largest international fashion companies in the world, Zara, is across two levels and is home to womens, mens and kids’ wear. Incredible for on-trend items every season, Zara is a mecca for fashion forward looks without breaking the bank. “Zara’s top colour palette for spring is notably cornflower blue, pops of candy pink, sage and yellow, while neutrals and bold brights are still definitely a feature throughout,” says Leticia. Stroll a little further down the mall and you’ll see the abundance of pastels showcased in this season’s H&M collection. “H&M has some of the best longline blazers in a range of great colours. It’s most definitely a goto retailer for head to toe looks
including shoes, accessories, active wear and swim,” says Leticia. For the best hidden and on-trend denim, nothing compares to UNIQLO. Sitting beautifully bright on level two, it’s home to some of the best quality collections, sustainable fashion and the most affordable linen for both men and women of any age. Leticia explains it’s the perfect store for staples such as basics and denim. “Look no further to find the cuts that are super trendy, especially the high-rise flare,” she says. Leader in sports fashion and encapsulating the epitome of street style, JD Sports is a vibe. Channelling the most fashionable athleisure and casual wear, they’re known for having street-style exclusives and stylish ranges. Adorn the latest from Adidas, Nike, Puma, Reebok and Lacoste and forget classic black, as khaki and blush are the seasonal tones coming through for sport style this spring. Completing your look and topping off your shopping experience at Sephora is simply a must-do. “With some of the best brands in the industry such as Fenty Beauty by Rhianna, The Beauty Chef by Carla Oates and Huda Beauty, visiting the glamorous wonderland is an experience within itself,” says Leticia. Its unique and open environment means there are always ever-increasing emerging brands across their broad range of categories from makeup to wellness. It’s this infinite number of products that can pose quite the challenge to resist buying everything that catches the eye. Whether you’re looking for something natural, functional or a look that’s a little bolder, Sephora has your skincare, makeup, hair care, and fragrance bases covered in one trip.

ocusing on developing collections that are both versatile and casually luxurious, the small team of women and working mums behind Elka Collective are committed to servicing Australian women who have a need for easywearing pieces that transcend the season and adapt to their lifestyles. And what better location than Brisbane to bring the natural fabrications, quality and longevity at the heart of the label? The answer was a no-brainer. Elka Collective was born from a gap in the market for accessible and everyday garments that don’t focus heavily on trends of the time. The ageless collection is for the woman who embraces quality and versatility in equal measure and seeks pieces that are made well and work well in every aspect of her life. “She’s consistent and considered in her style choices,” says Elka Collective marketing manager, Sarah. “She dresses with confidence and conviction.” Linen is key to the Elka look and makes up their core Luxury Linen Essentials collections. It’s also perfect for being comfortable and chic in the

Brisbane climate, so it’s only fitting they join the luxurious line-up at James Street. “With such a calibre of fellow Australian retailers we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to break into the territory when the opportunity arose,” Sarah says. “We’re really excited to be a part of the James Street community; there really isn’t anything like this precinct in Australia.” The striking boutique has been commanding attention from passers-by with its earthy and imperfect sandstone, smooth marble, rich timbers and reclaimed terracotta tiles. In collaboration with interior architect Chris Aplin and creative director Courtney Price, the space reflects Elka’s love of the natural environment and is the perfect backdrop for their collection. Proudly committed to their roots in Australian design, they also feature contemporary pieces by up and coming talent in store to create stunning boutiques that are an extension of the refined label. Natalie Bassingthwaighte IS ALL THAT JAZZ From starring in the iconic soap series, Neighbours, to fronting The Rogue Traders band, Natalie Bassingthwaighte is one of Australia’s most versatile entertainers. This month she’s putting the razzle dazzle in CHICAGO The Musical as it comes to Brisbane during November at QPAC. We sat down with the star to talk all things Broadway and woman power. Natalie, hi! Thank you for taking the time to talk to us about your upcoming role in CHICAGO - how are you feeling about it? Cannot wait to get to Brisbane and bring my character, Roxie, into such an energetic outdoors environment. I love this role so much, so I cannot wait for that.
Tell us about your character, Roxie Hart? What makes her tick? I think Roxie is very much underestimated. A lot of people think she is just blonde and ditzy but there is a lot of vulnerabilities to Roxie. I love exploring all these possibilities, from her childhood right through to her current day relationships, there are so many flaws to her like any of us, and that is what makes her fascinating to play every single night. How does it feel appearing in the musical a second time since 2002? I pinch myself every night that I get to play this role and to be part of such an iconic show. The cast and crew on both versions have been deliciously heaven, it is an amazing environment to be in every day.
What kind of preparation goes into this kind of performance? Six months before we started rehearsals, I started dance classes again and really got my head around the piece. Closer to the show, I get to the theatre two hours before and do a dance and vocal warm up, a little bit of meditation, and even just doing my makeup and getting my hair ready feels like great preparation. What is it like working with your fellow cast members, Alinta Chidzey and Casey Donovan? These strong leading women, I love them. I have never been part of company like this that are so supportive. Especially with women, they can either tear you down or lift you up, and there has not been one moment short of support between us all. Where might we find you enjoying yourself while you’re in the city? I cannot wait to hang out in South Bank. My friends have told me that Rydges have a great pool bar so I will definitely be checking that out and having a bevvy.

Where would we find you at a party? On the dance floor… or on a table dancing, I always end up on a table at some point, not sure how it happens!
A R T S & E N T E R TA I N M E N T
How do you describe what you do? Are you a singer or a producer? I’m in both worlds; I’m a solo artist and performer but I also produce a lot of my own work. But, I collaborate, write and produce for other artists too. How do you describe your style and sound? Anthemic pop. Simply, why music? It’s a way I thought I could have some kind of impact on the world. It’s the most proactive way to help and solve issues if you can build a voice.
A triple threat, hard to forget.
Are you a self-taught musician? I’m half and half – I did a degree in music production and learnt piano, violin and clarinet classically from a seven year old through to 15. I then picked up a guitar at 10 years old, taught myself and never put it down. What’s your creative process like? If it’s for myself I usually find a sound I really like first and work from there. For other artists I find what their influences are and then recreate their own style. For song writing, it’s usually when I’m driving or at work – really inconvenient times! But generally, it’s the sound and music first and then I select previously written lyrics to go with that. If you could have anything in your green room, what would you have? Go full Mariah Carey. Bottle of Hendricks gin and a bottle of tequila, for sure!

Brisbane is heating up when it comes to the music scene, where’s the best place to catch a gig? For emerging artists, definitely The Zoo and Ivory Tusk! What’s coming up for Magnus? I’m releasing two new tracks and a music video very soon. The next song is about wanting to get away from the usual day to day.

LOVE
How did he propose? Matt emailed me at work and suggested we do date night that evening, I agreed and didn’t think too much of it. We got take away sushi from our favourite place and had a picnic at Kangaroo Point cliffs (where we had our first kiss on our first date), and Matt got down on one knee, in front of the beautiful Brisbane City lit up at night and asked me to marry him. I was incredibly shocked and said “Oh my god” for about five minutes before responding with yes! Ceremony and reception venue? Gabbinbar Homestead, Toowoomba. Describe the location and why you chose it… Gabbinbar has so much character in the one venue. You have the romantic pavilion, the woods, the beautiful gardens, the lights throughout the trees at night, and then the beautiful vintage homestead with multiple rooms. It is so romantic, picturesque, and has endless possibilities for photographs. There was just no other wedding venue that compared for us. Top three favourite moments? Walking down the aisle, our vows, and the first dance. Where did you honeymoon? We are going on a five-week trip around Europe at the end of this year in December/ January. It will be our biggest travel adventure yet!

A Chef’s Signature Signature restaurant at Emporium South Bank is both a sight to behold and an ambience to be felt. WORDS BY GEORGINA MURRAY
T
here’s certainly more to what meets the palate when dining at this trademark restaurant in the heart of Brisbane’s south side. With impressive interiors and exceptional service, Signature offers a wholesome experience. However, it’s the culinary creations by Executive Chef Chris Norman that really speaks to Signature’s, well, signature. With fresh, local produce the pinnacle of their plates, Chris is elevating the menu season after season, showcasing honest ingredients. ‘’We’re trying to get the best ingredients we possibly can in QLD and Australia-wide if necessary. At Signature, we don’t want to hide behind anything – we treat ingredients with respect,’’ Chris says. ‘’Simply, we don’t want to turn food into something it’s not meant to be. It’s honest food.’’ Recently relocating to Queensland’s ‘big smoke’ from The Palazzo Versace and before that the heat of Melbourne kitchens, Chris has settled with the Emporium family due to aligned values and returned to an environment he’s used to: boutique hotels. Starting off in the bustle of London hotel kitchens, the environment forced Chris to
grow-up, but it was the speed and nature of the kitchen that he thrived off. “I think I needed it as much as it needed me. If I wasn’t in the kitchen, I would’ve been out in all sorts of trouble, no doubt,’’ he says. So, how has Chris taken on Signature with his own trademark? It all goes back to the produce. “We work very closely with the suppliers and we know where our food comes from. Whoever has brought that produce to market has had to raise it with respect from seed to fruition. This means we’re straight onto the freshest ingredients before they’re scheduled – seasons don’t work on a date penciled into a calendar like we do,’’ he says. As spring is in full-force, so are its flavours. Artichoke, fish and asparagus are key ingredients playing favourites on plates while lemon myrtle has been sourced from Mackay to create a must-taste mulberry dish. If you’re after unique dining with no-fuss and authentic flavour, Signature awaits.
WE DON’T HIDE BEHIND ANYTHING, WE TREAT INGREDIENTS WITH RESPECT.”
QUICK BITES Weirdest complaint? I find it funny that people can be strictly gluten-free, until it comes to dessert! Your death-row meal would be… Wagyu Tomahawk Sweet or savoury? I have no sweet tooth! Pizza or pasta? Pizza Who has been your culinary catalyst? At the beginning it was Gordon Ramsay but of all time I would say John Williams from The Ritz in London.

Food for THE SOUL Take one passionate cook and five housemates and you’ve got the perfect ingredients for an honest and relatable cookbook. Clare Scrine is serving up one shared plate at a time.
Tell us a little about yourself? I’m 25 and work as a community organiser and campaigner. I studied Arts and Law at university and am passionate about climate, justice and activism. I’ve been a major foodie since I was a little kid and have always adored eating tasty things. What does food mean to you? Food has always been an important part of my life, and something calming and constant that weaves around an otherwise busy schedule. It has always been a big part of who I am. Cooking food for others is my love language, and an activity that has always brought me joy. It’s meant slightly different things at various points in my life. What gets you excited about cooking? The creativity and chaos of it all, especially when trying a new thing or cooking up a huge spread. But equally, I love the certainty of the task. Once you’ve perfected a meal, that you know your crowd will love, there’s something
so wonderful about getting into it, and knowing that at the end, there’ll be something lovely to share. What made you decide to write The Shared Table? I’d spent so many years of my life cooking for others and sharing food, I always knew I wanted that part of me to carry on somehow. I’d always thought about opening up a cafe when I finished studying, but I felt a pull towards doing other things, and writing a book seemed like a logical halfway point!

Brisbane readers share their stories about the good, the complicated and everything in between. This month, we discuss:
I
SOMETIMES I WISH I COULD JUST DELETE SOCIAL MEDIA AND MOVE ON.”
’ve had a fairly strange relationship with social media and am currently conflicted on what to do with it. I’m involved in a profession where it means more to have a sizeable presence than any real skill. As such, the industry is dominated
by “influencers”. I understand social media is a necessity these days and I have actually gained sponsors through my following, but some days I do wish I could just delete it and move on. Every year I do take breaks and I’ve found this helps with the toxicity of the
environment. Around three months of every year I travel internationally and do my best to resist my phone. The disconnection definitely helps and feels really sweet to actually take in the moment, without worrying about posting or engaging online.

@STYLEMAGAZINES
I HAVE A SOCIAL MEDIA FOLLOWING, BUT I’M NOT INTERESTED IN MAKING A QUICK BUCK.”
O
ver the last couple of years, I’ve amassed a decent following on Instagram, posting photos of my personal style and my love for classic menswear with modern and contemporary details. I developed an interest in menswear quite late. I was in my mid 20s but quickly got tired of the ever-changing trends from one season to another. I found the more sartorial part of menswear to be more sustainable, not just in terms of the environment, but also in terms of style. It also fitted nicely into my line of work as a lawyer. I do what I do because it’s my passion, but along the way it has developed into something more meaningful than that. I know its cliché but if I can help someone along their style journey or give inspiration to others through capturing images of essentially what I put on each morning, then that makes me feel great. After all, that is how I started my journey, and it motivates me to continue creating new content. As my followers have grown over the last couple of years, I’ve started to attract attention from companies who want to send me product or pay me to post about their business. I’ve accepted a few invitations, but this has been the exception rather than the rule. It’s never been something that I’ve treated flippantly – unless the product or brand resonates with me and my personal style and what my followers have come to know and expect from me, I won’t accept an invitation simply to make a quick buck. If it’s not something I would buy with my own money, I won’t get on board. People can certainly be quick to pass judgement on social media. I try not to get involved in that negativity. At the end of the day, everyone is entitled to an opinion and express their own personal style. There is far more positivity that comes from what I do that outweighs the bad.
I
was on ICQ (a messenger service and political clickbait have reduced from the late 90s where you the amount of credible knowledge could message random people to almost zero. Whilst this unspoken across the world), then MySpace, social pressure to always put our bestFacebook, Instagram, etc. I’m a GenY’er, selves forward has ruined any genuine one of the first to grow opportunity of connection. up as a technology native My experience of social SOCIAL with access to knowledge media has gone from MEDIA HAS and connections at the something fun to a driver GONE FROM of anxiety. I now have a click of a mouse. This BEING FUN, TO BEING timer on Instagram and opportunity has allowed me to explore the world A DRIVER OF ANXIETY.” have deleted the Facebook and maintain friendships, app altogether. My hope access a range of opinions and witness for these platforms is that they go back countless hours of dog videos. However, to their essentials – knowledge and as time goes on, the value I find in these connectivity. My prediction is that they tools diminish further and further. The continue to push extreme populism and places I used to find value, knowledge social anxiety. The good news is, the and connections, have degraded. power to choose how much it impacts Facebook feeds full of extreme social you is in your hands.
I DON’T WANT SOCIAL MEDIA TO COME BETWEEN ME AND MY PARTNER.”
I
spend too much time looking at my phone. I am consciously trying to reduce this, so I keep tabs on my screen time. My partner hates me being on it and says “if there’s one thing that’ll come between us, it’ll be bloody social media” so I’ve taken that on-board big time. He’s always reminding me to be in the ‘now’ with the person in front of you, not people you’ve never met. Phone time has also hindered my exercise time, so I try to walk more, scroll less. Having said that, I use social media as a business tool for research and to keep in touch with family especially. I also love looking at travel destinations and have screenshots of so many beautiful places I’d like to visit. And there are a couple of people I really dig, so they inspire me. Though I know there’s a lot of bullshit going on too. I do feel for those, particularly young people, with low self-
NOVEMBER 2019
esteem who may be adversely affected by what they see. We hear about the increase in depression, anxiety, loneliness and body insecurity being linked to regular social media use. Relationships have busted up because of it, others have gone into serious debt to keep up with the lifestyles they are seeing on social media. Each to their own but personally I wouldn’t expose so much of my family and home life – that lack of privacy and security freaks me out. I do feel there is a shift happening. I think a lot of untalented people have become seemingly successful, however, at some stage reality comes into play – businesses expect results and returns, and followers want authenticity. I think people will give up the facade (of fake) because it really is unsustainable and I also sense, that as humans we’ll focus more on ‘our true self ’ and our ‘real’ relationships.

rom their hand to yours, Artisans Bespoke Jewellers work with the magnificent materials the earth has created to forge one-of-a-kind handmade jewellery that can be adored for generations to come. From starting the business in her garage to becoming Paddington’s jeweller of choice, Tammy Keers and her team takes the time to understand their clients in order to handcraft unique pieces, so they can be treasured for lifetimes. Tell us a little about Artisans Bespoke Jewellers… We specialise in handmade and individually designed jewellery. Our designs are inspired by the Art Deco era, using traditional skills that ensures quality and durability. We take pride in creating timeless pieces symbolising our clients special moments. What makes Artisans so unique? After seeing the same products everywhere, our clients are genuinely excited when they step into our boutique, see the difference in our designs and the quality of a handmade product. Our team of eight have a combined
experience of 200 years and it’s from this experience we can create something completely bespoke for each of our clients. What experience can clients expect when stepping into the store? Our clients enjoy personalised one-on-one consultations where our designers sketch bespoke designs just for you. Our team provides a friendly, knowledgeable service and specialise in carefully selecting specific diamonds and coloured gemstones for clients. We all love what we do, and this passion and sentiment is genuinely felt by all of our clients from the moment they step into our store. What is something people wouldn’t know about Artisans? We specialise in jewellery remodelling, which is transforming a client’s old, unworn or broken jewellery into something brand new by melting, un-setting or trading it in. Not only is this a great way of keeping sentimental jewellery in the family, but it’s environmentally sustainable and cost-effective too. Are diamonds really a girl’s best friend? Of course – who would say no to a diamond ring? However, we’re also passionate about coloured gemstones and love offering options with gemstones not commonly seen in traditional jewellery stores. night out can go many different ways – tame, indulgent and everything in between – but how about a night out spent helping those who need it most? Now that’s something we can get behind, and on Saturday September 14, that’s exactly what happened. Plus, it featured an Australian-made wellness company, Bella Figura. Leaving behind their mahogany desks and popping out of the boardroom for the night, Brisbane businesspeople and faithful sponsors came together to help fundraise for The Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust Gala Ball “A Night of Illusion”. But it’s not just the name that’s impressive, they have also been improving the wellbeing of the most marginalised and vulnerable members of the Brisbane community for over 50 years. The benevolent and generous funds they have raised have gone on to support charities that assist Brisbanites suffering from disability, homelessness, mental health, drug or alcohol addiction, trauma, abuse and neglect. Tools to Build
YOUR RELATIONSHIP For any marriage or relationship to thrive, it needs a roadmap.
Marriage and relationship issues are as varied as the relationships themselves. Whether these issues are due to a lack of intimacy or unmet expectations, money problems or parenting conflicts, infidelity or lack of communication, there is a proven way to overcome these challenges. But these remedies require effort, work and – most importantly – a roadmap. Relationship counselling and coaching can and does help a lot of people. It guides couples towards making significant changes in their relationships, helping many to
rebuild and maintain a stronger connection with each other. Knowing how to navigate the tricky disputes of a relationship requires skill, knowledge and understanding. It’s hard to reach your destination without a guided roadmap. Couples counselling and coaching is where we finetune the roadmap for your journey. It is where we signpost the journey to help us focus on understanding and resolving relationship conflicts, and remedy everyday interactions, communications and challenges. The clearer the map and better the signposts, the more you can enjoy your journey together. Creating a great relationship cannot be

Brooklyn Beauty Bar is Brisbane’s go-to place for a fun and chic beauty soirée and now they’re making their affairs a little extra saucy. We talked to owner and founder Brooke Jesberg about what to expect this party season. What’s new with parties at Brooklyn Beauty Bar? We can give larger groups their own private spaces now or they can completely book out either our James Street salon or our salon at The Barracks. We’ve also nailed (pun intended) the best mani party of all time which includes a manicure and a gin tasting menu. Speaking of gin and your bar, we couldn’t help but notice your new barmen! 62

N
ew clients often ask why the products they are using fail to give results. I ask them, “what are you using that works for you?” More often than not the answer is “nothing”. The solution lies with the ingredients, and while the multitude of products may seem difficult to navigate, we can break it down. Not all products are created equally; cosmeceuticals are a combination of pharmaceutics and cosmetics and are where science meets beauty. They bring physiological changes to our skin and remain the key to achieving beautiful,
healthy skin for life. These products contain bioavailable ingredients, which simply means delivering active ingredients into the skin and are not only guaranteed to remain stable but ensure the most effective rate of absorption to deliver excellent results. A really important point to remember is no absorption = no results. While there are many great ingredients, some to remember are Vitamin C that brightens and provides sun protection in sunscreen and Vitamin A or Retinol that increases cell turnover. Climbazole is an extraordinary breakthrough ingredient used to boost the effects of retinoids in the skin without causing irritation and AHA’S or BHA’S remove dead cells, increase absorption,

hydration and promote anti-ageing. Niacinimide is also known as B3 and is one of the most potent anti-inflammatory ingredients in skin care today to tackle problems like breakouts or redness. Peptides are an amazing ingredient that gives extra hydration, clarity, firmness and brightness to any skin, and sunscreen is an absolute must. Keep it simple – if you use a cleanser, Vitamin C, Retinol and a good SPF sunscreen, your skin will love you and the changes will be instant. This is just a small example of some wonderful ingredients that can effectively inhibit pigmentation, resurface and protect our skins, increase absorption, plump up our epidermal mattress which gives volume to skin and fights ageing. Always remember to get great advice, our well-trained therapists are always happy to guide you to ensure you make the right decision. We only have one skin – cherish it. Brace yourself For your best smile yet.
T
he art and science behind creating beautiful smiles never gets old. No matter your age or previous orthodontic experience, there’s always a solution to prime your pearly whites. Dr Sep Tabatabaee, senior lecturer in orthodontics, leads the family-oriented clinic, Wired Orthodontics, and knows that when you love your teeth, you’ll be all smiles. “When a patient decides they want braces, I congratulate them and tell them they will never regret making themselves happy,” he says. Fixing your teeth isn’t only a cosmetic choice but can have a whole range of medical benefits too. “Crowding is the most common problem for patients and prevents proper access for brushing
and flossing, which predisposes teeth to have cavity and gum issues,” Dr Sep says. Many people that come through don’t know whether they have a proper bite until Dr Sep and the team show them what they’ve been missing. Thanks to the latest in orthodontic technology, traditional braces aren’t your only option to get a smile you’ll never want to hide. “The introduction of clear braces and Invisalign have changed orthodontics for good dramatically,” Dr Sep explains. “With these technologies we can make treatments quicker, more comfortable and we require much less visits.” This also means there are more options that are cost effective to improve your smile, gain self-confidence, improve the health
of your gums and make oral hygiene easier. Wired Orthodontics uses the latest technology including the i-Tero scanner so that patients can see how their teeth will look at the end of treatment in a matter of seconds. With four locations across Brisbane as well as interestfree and flexible payment options starting from $51 a week, their clinics have a treatment for every smile. Plus to celebrate this season of giving, Style readers will receive a $535 discount when they start treatment before Christmas. f there’s a look you’ve been dreaming of for yourself that you want purely for you, breast enhancements could be an option you want to consider. But before you make any decisions, it’s important you know all the facts and Dr Vivek Eranki from Cosmétique is here to deliver them. “Patients often undergo breast enhancement to boost their confidence,” he says. Bigger doesn’t always mean better, though, but rather it’s all about what you want. “All patients have different motivations to undergo surgery and we conduct a comprehensive consultation to ensure the surgery requested by the patients is consistent with their aesthetic end goals,” Dr Eranki says. So, how does breast enhancement work? It can be done using saline or silicone breast implants or through fat transfer. The implant process involves placing implants either above
or under the muscle to enhance your breasts. Implants come in many shapes and sizes so with the help of your surgeon, you can find the one consistent with your desired aesthetic goals. “At Cosmétique, we only use premium breast implant brands,” Dr Eranki says. “Our implants come with a lifetime warranty against ruptures and a 10-year warranty against capsular contracture.” On the other hand, breast fat transfer involves removing stubborn fat with liposuction and transplanting it to the breasts. If you’re worried about introducing an artificial material into your body, fat transfer could
be more ideal and as it is less invasive than implant surgery, patients typically experience less discomfort and faster recovery. There’s also no scarring and no disruption to the muscle or its function. Following surgery, you will need to wear a supportive bra for recovery and Dr Eranki suggests avoiding intense exercise or gym for six weeks. He also recommends regularly massaging the implants after initial recovery so they stay soft for their lifetime. Because a good recovery process is essential, it’s important you choose an ideal time for surgery that suits your lifestyle best. Pigmentation solution
See it straight
Pack your bags
Pigmentation is one of our major skin concerns, and while there are many treatments available that appear to work in the short term, often subsequent results can be very disappointing and that is why we have chosen to specialise in the Cosmelan Method – the world’s number one depigmenting treatment. While there are various reasons, the main culprits can be environmental such as sun exposure, medication, hormonal changes, pregnancy, menopause, contraception or genetics. They can all be large contributors to developing this condition, however help is at hand. Cosmelan provides rapid lightening action that can be used on all skin blemishes of a melanic origin and treats not only the surface pigmentation you can see, but the 60% that lies beneath. It is a one-off treatment that is performed in the salon, can be done anytime of the year and on all skin phototypes. Used worldwide, this is the treatment for anyone suffering from pigmentation.
Strabismus is a fairly common eye condition in both children and adults. It can be corrected very successfully by surgery, with many potential benefits, even if it has been a longstanding problem. When surgery is performed prior to visual maturity, typically in early childhood, strabismus surgery can result in the development or recovery of binocularity with improved general motor skills. When strabismus surgery is performed after visual maturity, typically in an adult, the functional benefits of the surgery can include elimination of double vision and expansion of the useful field of vision. Numerous studies contradict the misconception that surgical correction of strabismus in adults is merely a cosmetic procedure, as they highlight the psychosocial benefits that may be achieved. Surveys have shown that a majority would trade a portion of their life expectancy to be rid of their strabismus. Your ophthalmologist can provide advice.
Travelling to cities far away is fantastic, but can be challenging without the right prep. The last thing you want to do is lose precious time to jet lag! To make the journey as easy as possible here are a couple of hacks that work for me. When you pack, use travel pouches to organise your clothing and throw in Fabric Fresh and Crease Release sprays from The Laundress New York to freshen your clothes on the run. Set your watch or phone to the destination time as soon as you board. Have a ‘sleep plan’ and know when you will need to sleep to wake up in sync with your destination. Always sit forward of the wing and invest in noise reducing headphones. If you have multiple travel legs ahead of you, use the lounges to freshen up. A shower and fresh underwear makes you feel fantastic again. If you don’t have access to a lounge most airports have a lounge that you can buy into. It is the best money you can spend!

Tender loving touch
Chewing gum truths
Spider veins
Touch hunger (or skin hunger, depending on how sexy you’re feeling) is the need for physical contact. It promotes feel-good sensations that foster a sense of well-being and happiness. A life without touch can have profound emotional, even physical, consequences. Touch is so important, especially in romance. Often, we forget that a kiss or cuddle can do wonders for relationships. We wonder where the spark went without even realising we haven’t been creating the friction (literally and figuratively) needed to keep it alive. Showing a lack of affection can stale your relationship. Touching someone you love is acknowledging and communicating your desire for them. Even twenty seconds of affective touching is enough to trigger the release of oxytocin. Indulge in time devoted to touch. Whether it’s a soothing massage, intimate night, passionate kiss before work or simply holding hands whilst watching TV, make an effort to touch often. Your hungry skin will thank you. For more advice, contact PBR Coaching.
Sugar-free chewing gum has been around for many years now, but what’s the latest information regarding its benefits? Chewing sugar-free gum straight after a meal is a great way to counteract the acid that is released into the mouth after we eat. When we chew, we produce a lot of saliva which is a great way to help clear the mouth of food and sugars and neutralise acid. Just like exercising the rest of our body to improve our health, taking your mouth to the gym by chewing gum, is also of benefit. Whilst chewing, the activation of our jaw muscles not only increases the size of our salivary gland cells but it also makes them more efficient at producing saliva. Exercising our mouth through chewing can also help with the development of our jaws, mouth and faces. It’s a good idea to choose xylitol-based chewing gum over sorbitol, if available, and to avoid citrus flavours such as lime, lemon or orange as these can often be acidic.
Spider veins are small, red or purple thread veins under the skin’s surface that are predominantly found on the outside of the thigh. If you’ve recently developed spider veins and are considering treatment here is what you need to know: • Have an ultrasound examination to identify if any underlying reticular veins are causing the spider veins. Failure to treat these correctly from the outset can lead to “matting” a complication of new very fine veins forming. • Notify your phlebologist of any medications that you take including supplemental therapies. Some like fish oil can interfere with treatment. • Compression stockings should be worn for at least five days and nights post treatment. • Keep in mind that the cosmetic treatment of spider veins is never completely permanent. Over time, new veins may develop and so you may need a maintenance session in a few years to keep those legs looking tip top.

In the first month of the Queensland summer, food trends move away from comfort eating and towards flavours that are fresh, light and tasty. We are so fortunate in Australia to have this produce available at our fingertips grown by hardworking local farmers. Our plates can reflect these stunning summer months by using seasonal fruits and vegetables. Summer brings the fresh vibrancy of greens such as avocados, asparagus, beans and silverbeet, the rich shades of red and purple in tomatoes, plums and cherries, and bright sunshine shades of yellow and orange reflected in zucchini flowers, oranges, apricots, melons, mangoes and peaches. At Lady Marmalade we change our menu seasonally to reflect the beautiful produce available. We want every meal to taste like the season we are in. We are releasing our summer menu the first week of November so come and see what amazing dishes we have created using the freshest ingredients. We want to share with you our creations to inspire you to create your own amazing dishes of the season.
Parents with teenagers often ask me how their sons and daughters can get a foot in the door working in a café. Initially enrolling in a barista course is a good start, but gaining experience on the espresso machine and undertaking customer service training is key. At Wolff College of Coffee we are super excited to be again offering our “Young Gun Barista Course” aimed at closing that gap and enabling school-aged participants to gain the skills to hit the ground running. Ideal for students 14 years and older, this course is suited to those looking to gain experience before obtaining employment in a café for the first time. All enrolled “Young Gun Baristas” have the opportunity to engage in the vortex of specialty coffee through a series of sessions starting on Monday 2 December 9am-11am daily until Friday 6 December. At the end of the week course, participant baristas will have the opportunity to take part in a “real” two-hour work experience shift at the Big Bad Wolff Espresso Bar.
Sailing from Amsterdam to Budapest is a completely different experience on a Travelmarvel stylist vessel. With a stop each day and busy optional sightseeing options, instead of chilling on-board you can enjoy dazzling Dutch tulip fields in springtime or Germany’s iconic Christmas markets. Travelmarvel offers a world of sights and experiences like no other. The Travelmarvel cruise itinerary departing 20 April 2020, starts from $13,500* per couple in a balcony stateroom including airfares with Emirates or Etihad Airways with options to do as much as you like or as little as you want. Their Flexi-Tours let you experience all the must-see sights while still enjoying plenty of free time and in 2020, Travelmarvel welcomes their brandnew Contemporary Class River Ship that has been custom-designed specifically for Europe’s waterways. Speak to one of our river cruise experts and they’ll find the perfect holiday to tick all your boxes. T&Cs apply, see in store for more details.

e arrive late at night at Wyndham Sundancer Resort and there is a supper planned for us at Rayunan Restaurant overlooking the huge pool, which is the stunning centre piece of the hotel. With its impressive waterfall edge and swim up bar, the pool is beautifully lit up at night, providing a romantic atmosphere and a sensational backdrop to say ‘I do… want another margarita please’. The food is expertly prepared by Chef de Cuisine Rahman and his team, including a selection of local and Australian dishes such as Chicken Popiah Asian fresh spring roll with
EXPLORING THE GILI ISLANDS!
The hotel can pack you a picnic and drinks as there’s nowhere to buy food on the islands.
SUNDANCER SPA The resort’s spa is gorgeous with Lombok styling and several treatment rooms including couples’ rooms and two large spa pools. It’s a beautiful space and a calming oasis to unwind in. I had an amazing 45-minute Green Tea body scrub that was Out. Of. This. World however the selection also included Lulur – an ancient beauty treatment made from turmeric, coconut for dry skin, coffee and chocolate. I think every day in Lombok should include a visit to the spa.
BEACH CLUB The Sundancer Beach Club is naturally right on the beach and again, unlike other places in Lombok it’s uncrowded. Your feet are in the sand and it’s the perfect spot to enjoy a casual dinner. Fire dancers entertain us as we enjoy fresh seafood and we’re also treated to the Lombok Peresean stick fighting where two fighters try to whack each other (hard) with rattan sticks and only a cowhide shield to protect themselves. It sounds brutal but it’s an ancient martial art and the fight also serves to ask God for rain with the belief that the more blood shed, the more rain would follow. spicy peanut dressing, Tom Yum Goong Thai style prawn soup with mushroom, Australian Outback Beef Black Pepper steak and finishing with chocolate mousse. Tired and with a deliciously full tummy, we head to our rooms. My deluxe suite is huge, with a full kitchen and lounge room leading to a balcony overlooking the pool. The spacious bedroom too has a view of the resort and the bathroom features a spa bath. We have a big day planned the next day, so I drink in the fragrance of frangipani and dive into the king bed – is there any better feeling than a king bed to yourself?
ASHTARI RESTAURANT AND LOUNGE, KUTA BEACH This Hacienda-like building is stunning with a bougainvillea arbour leading upstairs to the restaurant. Inside it is simply wow – a spacious dining deck offers wide views across the hilltops to the sea beyond. Here, you can order cocktails
and great food (a mix of local and international dishes) the owner is French and he knows his food. Again, in true Lombok style the vibe is laid-back, the sounds are chilled (check out what nights the DJ sunset sessions are on) and I could sit gazing at that view for hours [insert Sade track here].
SELONG BELANAK BEACH On our way home we drop into this popular beach for a swim. Here you’ll find a bustling dining precinct with restaurants and bars running for about 100 metres along the beach, with daybeds lined up facing out to sea ($5 day hire). Once you have your daybed sorted, you can pop in and out of the water, enjoy a drink and even see a herd of water buffalo as they amble along the water’s edge. Another unexpected surprise to see water buffalo so close. Ask your driver to take you to see the sunset on the way back to the resort – it’s quite beautiful and again, romantic. Wyndham Sundancer Resort is the perfect base to explore Southern Lombok (including scuba diving, pearl farm visit and local weaving). I’ve not been to Northern Lombok, so I can’t compare, however I like that Southern Lombok isn't over developed. The people are super friendly and will do anything to please. They’re attentive with broad smiles and you get the feeling that they like having you here as much as you do. They’re proud of their island and culture and, just like your cool uncle, the gentle, laid-back vibe is something that makes you really want to linger longer.
SOUTHERN GILI ISLANDS Across the road (and part of the resort) is the Beach Club where a boat has pulled in to take us out for a day of snorkelling and exploring the crystal-clear waters of Gili Layar and Gili Rengit. The underwater life is stunning and there are plenty of fish. I freaked out a bit at the drop off where it was dark blue, so I didn’t explore that – however if I did, I would have seen turtles as others did. This would be a great day trip if you had kids with you, the boat ride is short, the water is gentle and it’s uncrowded, unlike the northern Gili Islands.

Enduring modernity IN BRISBANE’S CBD Tracy Sinclair believes a CBD stay-cay really is as good as a holiday and shares why she has a soft spot for Hilton Brisbane.

any, many moons ago, I worked for City News and our office was in Mary Street. We were a particularly social team (newspaper people being a certain breed of crazy), so Friday after-work drinks were a regular thing. You would find us at one of the many watering holes in the CBD - one of our favourites being the Hilton Brisbane’s lobby bar. Mind you, I, like many other ‘city slickers’, also chose the Hilton to meet with clients. Back then, as it is now, it was a cool oasis in the heart of the city. With its soaring atrium and sci-fi like lifts the Hilton’s sophisticated modernity was the perfect environment to share creative ideas over coffee (or a chardonnay). I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for the place. Since then of course, Brisbane has evolved out-of-sight with many new luxury hotel brands choosing our fair city to call home, yet the Hilton Brisbane still holds its rightful place amongst our top hotels. So, it was lovely to spend a mini stay there recently. Our executive king room had a great view of King George Square and Brisbane City Hall. It was a perspective of the city that I 74

hadn’t seen before – which is the beauty of a stay-cay. You often discover different sides of your own city. We headed downstairs to my old stomping ground, the lobby bar with an hour to kill before our dinner reservation at the Vintaged Grill restaurant. Scanning the comprehensive cocktail list, I ordered the Rose Mellow – a blissful sour with Beefeater gin, Chambord liqueur, pomegranate syrup, rhubarb bitters and egg white with a sprinkling of rose petals and a rose water. Drink in hand and feeling nostalgic, I was soon regaling hubby with riveting stories of the advertising world and boozy lunches circa 1991. Two cocktails down, we headed into the adjacent Vintaged Grill restaurant. Sometimes a hotel can be let down by its food, but not the Hilton Brisbane. I can honestly say it was one of the most enjoyable meals I’ve had in ages. Starting with freshly shucked Australian oysters, I followed with an incredible Grilled Moreton STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

Bay Bug stuffed with sautéed Warringal greens, toasted pine nuts and a lemon pepper butter; sides of divine roast baby carrots with yoghurt, honey from the Hilton Brisbane’s own hives (how good!) and sumac; and steamed seasonal greens. I’ve always thought bugs were a little overated, but mine had plenty of bug and was bursting with flavour. Hubby was equally impressed, declaring his steak was “the best I’ve ever had”. We headed back to Vintaged Grill for a buffet breakfast the following morning, which offered a wide selection. We had to leave early, however next time we’ll linger longer over their unlimited Mimosa breakfast ($39pp Saturday and Sunday from 10am-11am). It’s not the newest kid on the block, however Hilton Brisbane doesn’t need to be. It has the lineage of a world-class brand, first class service, an enviable location and really the most sensational food (and wine list) that’s worthy of Brisbane’s movers, shakers and visitors alike.
