f you ask me, there is truly no feeling that’s more rewarding or satisfying than standing back at the end of a project and admiring the completed product in all its intricacies and glory. Just as every development involves a momentous journey (filled with an unpredictable array of highs and lows, setbacks, and milestones) so too does any career. I have an incredibly vivid and fond memory of tagging along with my father and hanging out at his construction sites as a child. He was a developer and builder himself, and I remember stomping through wet concrete in my gumboots on pour days and sitting on the bobcat driver’s lap and cruising around while my dad prepared a site. In hindsight, it was probably those treasured memories and times with my father that established my grassroots to construction and property development. Fast forward a few years and I was a bright-eyed university student who thought he wanted to

become a physiotherapist. After a few years in practice, I quickly realised that my passions lay elsewhere. During my time as a physio, I set up a side hustle and dedicated the bulk of my spare time to renovating and selling houses. Real estate, design, and construction were always areas that had fascinated me, so eventually, I decided to listen to my gut, take a leap of faith, and leave physio to pursue my passion project full time. I began working in the construction industry under the supervision of a local developer, where I learnt the ropes and quickly picked up the important tools and tricks of the trade. That essentially comprised my apprenticeship, and from there I studied building and construction management which ultimately catapulted my career into what it is today. As the managing director of FORME, I specialise in highend boutique residential and commercial developments and aim to transform, inspire, and NOVEMBER 2021

influence the property industry by creating new landmarks and iconic destinations of unrivalled standards. One that I am particularly proud of is Norfolk – an iconic residential building on Goodwin Terrace in Burleigh Heads – which brings sophisticated beachfront living to a whole new level. Whilst many of my projects are based slightly further afield on the sparkling Gold Coast, I’m a proud Brissy local through and through. Looking towards the future, I am incredibly excited to get back to my roots and begin working on a few local projects in the New Farm area with Richards & Spence Architects, including a retail and office development on James Street and a mixed-use residential development on Doggett Street. I was born and raised within the leafy streets of New Farm and am still lucky enough to call 4006 home today, so bringing stunning spaces to the area will be hugely rewarding.

ALEX SORINA MOSS Chair and Head of Creative at Canaria Technologies When someone says, “I’m changing the future of space medicine”, what kind of person comes to mind? Guaranteed it isn’t the artist, model, and art curator hailing from London that is Alex Sorina Moss. With outlandish style and substance, Alex founded Canaria Technologies with Dr Rob Finean back in 2016 and now has a team of 15 designing and manufacturing all equipment here in Queensland thanks to Elexon Electronics and the continuing championing work by the Queensland Government. Both medically and fashionably, the Canaria ear cuff device combines data with AI systems to make predictions about a wearer’s likelihood of experiencing a severe medical incident. What’s most impressive is their focus on predicting heat exhaustion and cognitive fatigue. Both stylish and potentially lifesaving, it was Alex’s time spent in the fashion industry that was critical to developing such a product. “Documenting visual research, testing materials, managing supply chains, and preparing holistic marketing campaigns a year in advance of a launch, this is the same process used by A-list fashion designers. I absorbed this process by working for Savile Row tailor Gieves & Hawkes (the tailor who makes the Royal Family’s military uniforms and, famously, where Alexander McQueen trained),” says Alex. Who would have thought a simple mood board would be such an important part of the process for this entrepreneur? When thinking about her position in the company, Alex says it’s important to support women of all talents. “We have some incredibly talented women working at Canaria Technologies and being able to offer them the support and growth through their careers is powerful – not only for the technology industry in Brisbane but for women in general,” she says. CANARIATECHNOLOGIES.COM

“IF I COULD GIVE ANY ADVICE TO MY YOUNGER SELF, IT WOULD BE: WORKING ON INTERESTING PROJECTS IS SO MUCH MORE IMPORTANT THAN A UNIVERSITY DEGREE. IF YOU KEEP FOLLOWING YOUR PASSION FOR YOUR BIZARRE INTERESTS AND IGNORE ANY ADVICE ABOUT CONVENTIONAL CAREER PATHS, YOU’LL ULTIMATELY BE FINE.” |

ALYSSA CARSON Youngest certified astronaut trainee in the world For the average teenager, life is a mix of high school, hanging out with friends, and bingewatching Netflix. While Alyssa Carson may do all of this, at the brink of twenty, she’s also ticked off all three NASA Space Camps, the NASA Passport Program, and the Advanced Possum Academy. As the youngest certified astronaut trainee in the world, she wants to do more than just shoot for the stars, she wants to walk on Mars. Gaining an interest in space from a young age, Alyssa believes that, “Mars is what’s happening right now”. While curiosity may have initially driven her to the Red Planet, the possibilities of space exploration, growing technologies, and overall contributing to scientific history outweigh all her fears and doubts. Plus, she reassures, “as far as the NASA mission to Mars, they will always have a return trip”. With a wealth of titles, experiences, and achievements loaded in her spacesuit, Alyssa has broken down numerous boundaries and barriers, not only for her age, but her gender. While she may one day walk on a planet afar, it’s perhaps the moves she’s made down here on Earth that will have the greatest impact. With 90% of astronauts being men, she’s a shining example and passionate advocator for women, and especially young girls, to pursue their interest in science, technology, engineering, and maths (also known as STEM). @NASABLUEBERRY

“WHAT I’M TRYING TO DO IS RETAIN THAT PASSION AND INTEREST, ENCOURAGE GIRLS TO GROW AND BECOME THE ASTRONAUT, SCIENTIST, ENGINEER, OR ANYTHING ELSE THEY WANT TO BE!”

VICTORIA DEVINE Founder and Host of She’s On The Money “How much savings do you currently have?” “What salary are you on?” “How much is your rent?” Money. It’s a commonly avoidable, anxietyinducing topic for many of us – primarily women. From an early age, women are conditioned to believe that to openly speak about money is unladylike and unbecoming. Like politics and religion, money was a topic that women should steer clear of discussing. But why? Victoria Devine asked this very question, before deciding to flip the script on the topic of money entirely. If her name sounds familiar, you’ve likely listened to her award-winning podcast or read her inspiring book, She’s On The Money; an entertaining, accessible, and above all, helpful guide to taking charge of your finances in an empowered way. “Everything we’ve done has been to empower women into achieving financial freedom, by providing them with the education and the tools they weren’t given in school,” she says. Earning its title as the millennial money guide, She’s On The Money covers everything from budgeting and clearing debts, to investing and property ladders. Above all, the core of this platform is to help women not be afraid of money, but rather, to embrace it in all its complexities. Describing finance as a ‘man’s world’, Victoria says this is because the industry has always been dominated by men, with women only recently coming into the picture. “Women aren’t settling for lives they don’t want to lead. They understand the importance of financial education and independence, so they’re going out and learning as much as they can, which is incredible to see.”

“MONEY HAS ALWAYS BEEN A MAN’S GAME. I THOUGHT IT WAS TIME THAT CHANGED.”

UMAR K NGUYEN ‘The Fish Girl’ Director of Platinum Providore Making seafood look, sound, and taste the best that it can, Umar Nguyen is essentially a fashion designer for our exquisite Australian seafood selection. Also known in the industry by her alter ego, “The Fish Girl”, Umar has been trekking the ground and seas to elevate consumer awareness and enthusiasm for the great diversity and quality of Australian seafoods. “I don’t just take on any client, I will sit on a boat for hours in Port Lincoln in South Australia feeling seasick, send it to a handful of chefs, tell them about the product, and finally, eat it myself. My taste test is the last,” she says. “Above all, I go to the producers’ premises or boat to make sure they are sustainable and environmental. Sustainability is vital to me and my family. I think about my daughter being able to grow up surrounded by ethically caught and produced food, and that motivates me to do what I do in this unconventional industry.” When asked what inspired her to start Platinum Providore, Umar recalled an incident years ago in Dubai, where she was referred to as a male. “People refused to work with me because I was female. It’s always been a matter of generation – older people always assumed I was a male before meeting me.” Globally, the seafood industry is viewed as a male dominated space, but Umar isn’t letting this stop her. “I love what I do, I love food! This is what I happen to be good at, and I’m not going to be bullied out of it.” @THEFISHGIRL

BRISBANE’S NEWEST EXECUTIVE CHEF

After gradually rising through the ranks since his arrival to Hilton Brisbane in 2010, Dario Fiorino has elevated to their top culinary position.

H

ailing from Milan, Dario began his career as an apprentice at the age of 15. His culinary journey took him to the Netherlands, where he joined the renowned Hilton Amsterdam as a Chef de Partie at the highly awarded Roberto’s Restaurant. Upon moving to Australia in 2010, he joined Hilton Brisbane where he opened the popular Vintaged Bar + Grill as Chef de Cuisine. During his time here, the restaurant was awarded a prestigious chef’s hat three years in a row. Dario continued to progress his career with Hilton

Brisbane when he became Executive Sous Chef, taking on the responsibility of the hotel’s thriving banquet operation, providing catering for events of up to 800 people. Fast forward to this year, Hilton Brisbane announced the appointment of Dario as Executive Chef. His new role will see him take responsibility of the hotel’s entire dining operation, including the culinary team, the banqueting and events catering division, and all in-room dining operations. “We are delighted to promote Dario to Executive Chef,” says Hilton Area General Manager South East Queensland

CONSISTENCY IS KEY Meet Jeremy, Mikey, and Jarrad – the three Gold Coast blokes behind cocktail mixer brand, Mr. Consistent. By MELISSA MYRTEZA

eremy is the business brain, looking after development, strategy, and management. Mikey? He’s the creative behind the new recipes with 15 years of experience working in cocktail bars across the globe. And Jarrad, he’s the brand director, helping guide the creative with his graphic design and marketing background. Together, they’re the recipe for Mr. Consistent. Who is Mr. Consistent? Jarrad: Anyone and everyone can be Mr. Consistent and make cocktails like him! When we designed the personality, he was a lovable Aussie bartender. His characteristics make up a lot of us three co-founders in the way we walk, talk, and act.

Martini can’t be ignored if you’re trying to truly bring the bar experience into somebody’s home. If it means discarding whole batches of mix for the tiniest imperfections, we’ll never compromise on quality. Worst cocktail experience? Jeremy: A sub-par margarita right after a brilliant one, that was my most disappointing cocktail experience because of the inconsistency. From that frustration, Mr. Consistent was born. The inspiration behind the brand? Jarrad: Jeremy had identified a huge gap in the market, so when the world shut down, we thought –

CITY ESCAPE Take a walk through the bubbling melting pot of Brisbane with Larry Lim... By MELISSA MYRTEZA

W

hat better way to indulge than with a recommendation or two from someone who knows Brisbane like the back of his hand! Immersing himself in an abundance of food and culture on the daily, content creator Larry Lim takes us around his favourite haunts to sip, shop, and savour. @LARRYLIM_

SOMETHING SWEET

VANTAGE POINT Definitely Wilson Outlook Reserve. Head to this iconic viewpoint at sunset to watch the sky change colours over the Story Bridge.

CURATED COCKTAILS One of my favourite cocktails can be found at Bar Kazba in Fortitude Valley. Called “El Floridita”, this Havana cocktail created circa 1918 is a mix of rum and maraschino – it’s so delicious it could double as dessert.

DOSE OF CULTURE Metro Arts at West End have been hosting some incredible artists of late. Book dinner after your show at one of the many nearby restaurants and make a night of it.

Dough Ma at Mt Gravatt. Think fluffy brioche dough and generous cream fillings. After trying almost every flavour, I have to say Taro is my top pick!

SS21 SHOPPING There’s been some great boutique openings and renovations in Brisbane recently. Christian Louboutin and Hermès are the ultimate luxury shopping experiences for both on-trend and timeless pieces.

EXCLUSIVE EATS Blink and you’ll miss the most divine pasta shop on Ann Street – Ripiena. Authentically Italian with freshly made pasta and the best Aperol spritz in town.

BARBER REFRESH Ryan.Co Barbershop is the industry leader with great service, exceptional cuts, and attention to detail. Hands down best barber in Brisbane. NOVEMBER 2021

BREWERY BEERS Range Brewing in Newstead is a small batch brewery with unique beers that pack a big punch.

BUCKET LIST Kayaking along the river at nightfall is one of the best ways to see beautiful Brisbane. Watching the city lights reflect on the water is mesmerising.

COFFEE HAUNT Good coffee can set the tone for the day, so I make sure to frequent The Maillard Project when I’m in the city. On the northside, Passport Speciality Coffee offers an extensive range of brews.

Starfire Jewellery Put a bit of spark in your diamond. Signifying the fiery brilliance of diamonds, Starfire Diamond Jewellery recognises that the everlasting qualities and innate beauty of a diamond is the ultimate symbol of true love. The woman behind the diamonds and unique designs is founder Shweta Khan. As a jewellery designer and diamond specialist, her desire to bring one-of-a-kind pieces and the highest quality diamond cuts to life was a driving force to open Starfire Diamond Jewellery on Oxford Street, Bulimba. Being one of the few women to also have a diamond wholesale business as well as retail, Shweta has recently partnered up with the Brisbane Racing Club for the Spring Racing Carnival. An avid supporter of Women’s Network Australia and Women’s Legal Service, her philanthropic nature is one way she gives back to the community, as well as creating beautiful jewellery. With the festive season just around the corner, Shweta and her team are seeing a higher demand for one-of-a-kind ‘milestone pieces’ including reimagined diamonds that go against the grain, such as their carefully curated collection of coloured diamonds. Mo bros unite!

Bespoke suiting for the season

Traditionally, many men have poor help-seeking behaviours. For example, not going to a GP, or ignoring mental wellness and relationships. Movember is the time of the year that turns all of this around, with everyday blokes growing out their facial hair to facilitate conversations on men’s mental health and wellbeing. Having prostate and testicular checks, talking about mental health, and getting in physical shape can be the new better! Knowledge is power, prevention is critical, and early detection is essential. To be a quality Mo Bro, consider these steps: • Have a check-up at your GP • Monitor your weight and waistline • Know your family health history • Nurture your relationships • Maintain a balanced, healthy diet • Move regularly and wear sunscreen • Chillax, manage stress, and connect with nature • Minimise alcohol and don’t smoke • Sleep well and meditate often • Stay connected to fun friends • Discuss difficulties and emotions • Ensure you smile and laugh often! Designing a bespoke look is a meaningful process for all and tailoring is a fashion statement that expresses personality and lifestyle! The feeling of beautiful fabrics and displays of vibrant colour that uniquely fit to you – this is just the beginning of creating a wardrobe that is luxury. During the festive season, we mark the end of the year with details of positivity. We are moving into the social season and cocktail hour calls for either a suave pinstripe suit or dark denim with Italian cotton shirt, depending on the level of formality you desire. Focusing on the racing carnival, the creativity is endless with exciting prints and combinations of colour that will uplift the themes of each event. Having fun with options is key, it is eye-catching frivolity that demands attention amongst the crowds. Add metallics, floral motifs or striking hues to show confidence and taste. Lastly, we cruise into the holidays with effortless pieces like earthy linens, casual leather sneakers, and classic polo shirts to match your more relaxed moments. Health over heels

Self-care for the soul

The party season is well and truly upon us. Time to coordinate outfits and dust off the ‘Choos’. Researchers have compared the venous blood pressure in the legs of women walking on a treadmill, to walking with and without high-heeled shoes. Essentially, high heels change our natural walking motion, shifting weight to the forefoot, causing our calf muscles to remain contracted. This loss of efficiency causes pooling of venous blood in the leg, hence why some people experience swelling or restless leg symptoms at night. If you experience symptoms of varicose veins, wearing heels may aggravate those symptoms more. You don’t have to stop wearing heels – simply mix up your footwear and stretch out your calf muscles by walking (or dancing) throughout the day!

When it comes to treating ourselves, our minds immediately race to a piece of chocolate or a slice of cake. But why don’t we ever think of a pampering experience as a way to treat ourselves? We so often get lost in the busyness of our thoughts and daily routines, that we forget self-care extends beyond our favourite snacks. Whether it’s a deluxe facial with all its glorious massage and fragrance, an LED treatment with the glow and warmth of healing light, an eyelash curl. eyebrow tint, or luxury takehome skincare – pause, breathe in, take the time to tell yourself a big “well done”, and treat yourself to some luxe pampering at The Skin Lab.

‘Tis the season to indulge

Tighten without the hard work?

There’s something wonderful about getting together to share great food. We’re quickly approaching the festive season, which also heralds the season of indulgence. Given we attach meaning to food, it’s no surprise that “bliss point” foods (containing just the right amount of salt, sugar, and fat to optimise deliciousness) feature heavily during the festive season. The downside is they can cause cravings and changes in the brain similar to those of addictive drugs. The trick is to keep your compensations ahead of your indulgences. Make sure you fill up on moodenhancing nutrients so you don’t need to overuse sugar, salt, fat, or caffeine. Try foods such as lobster, chocolate, tofu, cottage cheese, and banana, which contain great mood-lifting chemicals such as tryptophan, magnesium, and B12, to get your “food high” without causing harm.

There’s a new trend of non-surgical anti-ageing treatments and it’s called HIFU. The revolutionary technology (which stands for high intensity focused ultrasound) is clinically tested and proven to safely tighten skin from the inside out, reducing superficial and deep wrinkles and repairing collagen and elastin fibres. HIFU is aimed at females and males over 30 years of age who want to improve signs of ageing. Being the number one noninvasive treatment worldwide, it is used for skin tightening, reduction of small wrinkles, double chin reduction, jawline tightening, body contouring, and plumping of the skin. HIFU uses ultrasound energy to kick-start the production of collagen and elastin, resulting in firmer and more youthful skin. At The Verve Lounge, the treatment is performed by our PRO Skin Experts who are continually keeping up with the ongoing skin trends. HIFU is a great start for us to be transitioning towards a healthier outlook on rejuvenating our skin health through a noninvasive method. OFF WITH A

BANG! Priscilla Hajiantoni is the brains behind Bangn Body, or as it’s most renowned for – the “yellow tube of goodness”. By COURTNEY FRANK

C

atapulting to success in its first two months of launching, Bangn Body quickly made its mark on the beauty industry with its multi-purpose firming lotion. With an ethos of skincare that speaks louder on your skin than on the packaging, Founder of Bangn Body, Priscilla Hajiantoni, chats to Style Magazine about the brand’s inception, its colossal success, and everything in between. Hi Priscilla! Your original product, a little ‘yellow tube of goodness’, amassed a cult following almost instantly. Take us back to its inception: Going back to the beginning, it was almost three years of conceptualising, developing, formulating and testing before launching. During this time, I wanted to make sure Bangn Body could offer simple and effective solutions to skincare. For many years, I struggled with hormonal acne, which was a journey of not only finding products suitable for my sensitive and acne-prone skin but also the product not working. I wanted to ensure that by creating a product and brand, I could offer the solutions I was looking for, as well as offer something different – not just better. Social media and influencer marketing was integral to your initial success. Why this approach and not something more traditional? Creating a purposeful and solution-driven business is one thing, but communicating that business is a complete other beast. Creating a

business with intent, purpose, and authenticity has always been a part of my ethos. I wanted to share my story and the love I have for skin with as many people as I could. I invested a lot into gifting at the very beginning to really capture authentic feedback and communication around the brand and product. I was blown away by the positive communication around Bangn Body. This approach to online marketing was the best decision I could have made. Congratulations on being listed in the ‘Forbes 30 Under 30’ list! What was it like to receive that phone call? Thank you so much! This was also a very surreal moment. I still have no words! It’s hard to believe that Bangn Body is only 2.5 years old. Where do you hope to be in another 2.5 years? We are always working on purposeful NPDs, campaigns, and projects that offer great value to our customers. We are also in conversations with retailers to offer an in-store presence globally. LIVING

Meet the Brisbanites proving it’s possible to balance city-living with sustainable living. By ANNA WALL

rowing your own veggies and owning a brood of clucking hens is becoming the dream for many of us looking to take a rain check on our hectic city lives. While it may seem unachievable in the big smoke, Sheryl Yeates, an education officer and keeper at Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, was tired of worrying about how her actions affected the environment. Finally, she decided to make a serious change. “Our journey began when I wanted to reduce the waste we produce. I tried to avoid various plastic packaging by making things from scratch including soaps, body products, cleaning solutions and a little baking. We try to shop local and bring our reusables bags, containers and cups to avoid plastics when shopping,” she says. As a wife and mum of two young boys, roping her family into turning their household completely sustainable was a little harder. “My husband is mostly on board. It’s sometimes just a transition period to get used to the changes like trusting my homemade body and cleaning products.” While it wasn’t an overnight process, the young family now supplement more than half of their energy usage with solar power, use entirely homemade cleaning and body products, grow their own vegetables, and make and sell their own honey. “Sustainable living is so rewarding,” Sheryl says. “Start by making small changes and build on that. Get used to changes before you take the next eco-action. Share your actions to inspire others. Every sustainable change adds up and does make a difference.” While the family aren’t classified as entirely “off-grid” as they use some electricity and gas, they have 20 solar panels and use rainwater to irrigate gardens and water their animals, which makes an incredible difference to their environmental footprint.

MATT BAKKER & MICAH OBERON

Micah Oberon & Matt Bakker Neighbourhood Farm

N “I THINK THERE ARE MANY REASONS WHY WE’RE SEEING MORE INTEREST IN THE FARM, BUT I THINK THEY ALL END WITH BECOMING MORE SUSTAINABLE.”

NOVEMBER 2021

estled in the suburbs of south-west Brisbane is a community farm, and two young men dedicated to making serious changes to protect the environment and challenge the norms of inner-city living. At just 19 years old, Micah Oberon stumbled across an abandoned plot of land and kick-started the small-scale bio-intensive market garden which uses sustainable and regenerative practices to grow food for the pair’s own household and to sell to the community. “When I moved to Queensland, I felt disconnected from my childhood and experience growing up with fresh foods,” Micah says. A few years on, Matt Bakker was looking for a market to sell his own home-grown vegetables when he met Micah. The rest he says, “was history”. Farming was always a pivotal part of Micah and Matt’s life, so much so that even while being interviewed, the two were still elbows deep in the dirt of their one-acre plot in Oxley. In a society where we’ve grown used to instant gratification even in things as small as being able to grocery shop whenever we desire, Micah says starting a vegetable garden and learning to live on Mother Nature’s schedule is a surefire way to embrace the slow lane. “I think there are many reasons why we’re seeing more interest in the farm, but I think they all end with becoming more sustainable,” Matt says.
