As a local I love nothing more than seeing Noosa come alive in summer. The streets are full, everyone is smiling, restaurants are packed, musicians line the pavements, CoolCabanas take over the beaches, and there is that electric vibrancy in the air.

This month, we had the pleasure of working with the much-beloved shoe boutique Diana’s of Noosa for this issue’s cover shoot (with new owner, Lindy Searle at the helm), alongside sun-conscious swimwear brand Wet Leopard. It was such an exciting day that marked a wonderful collaboration between two local businesses and I’m still dreaming about the spectacular weather we had!

With the end of year in sight, the talk of New Year’s resolutions are fresh on our minds. So, it was fitting that we dedicate an entire section to all things wellness (page 15) – from my relaxing experience at Revival Wellness Studio to our boutique wellness accommodation round-up, there’s plenty to satisfy your mind, body, and soul. On that note, whatever your plans are over the holiday period, from the whole team at Noosa Style, we wish you a safe and restful break (PS, don’t forget that sunscreen!).

Laura O’Rourke has always been passionate about leading a healthy lifestyle, so it only seemed fitting she’d one day head up her own healthy lifestyle store, and what better place to do so than in Noosa, the ultimate wellness destination. However, it hasn’t come without its challenges. The Orangerie opened to the public the same week Queensland went into its first Covid lockdown. “Surviving the last few years feels like a big achievement,” Laura says.

The Orangerie is now a Noosa Heads mainstay and sells everything from natural skincare and makeup to activewear and small gifts.

“The store started as a natural skincare and wellness store, but over the last 12 months it’s morphed into more of a lifestyle boutique based on customer demand.”

Laura’s favourite part? Helping customers find the perfect gift. “I love giving gifts, so I enjoy helping [customers] pick out that special gift for a loved one,” she says. “It’s also been rewarding getting to know many of our local customers.

Noosa is such a lovely community and I’m so pleased that our business is based here.”

While Laura’s passion has always laid within the wellness industry, she hasn’t always worked in it. Before she made the switch to retail, she was working in business development in Sydney and Brisbane. She grew up in Peregian Beach (a short 30-minute drive from Noosa), where she now lives.

“While I loved the corporate world, it’s so nice to be back in Noosa,” Laura says. “I have always loved the lifestyle here.”

A typical Sunday for Laura starts with a Pilates class at one of the studios in Noosa Junction, followed by breakfast at Vanilla Food. She also enjoys going out for lunch and going for an afternoon walk on the beach.

On what’s next for her and The Orangerie, Laura is busy finalising Christmas orders and is looking forward to welcoming two new jewellery brands – an Athens-based demi-fine jewellery range and a new Noosa-based jeweller –this month.

With a new owner at the helm and a steadfast dedication to high-quality and exclusive fashion, a new chapter begins as Lindy Searle leads Diana’s of Noosa to new heights.

For those in the know, Diana’s of Noosa is a Hastings Street institution that’s been loved by locals for over 30 years. As the home to a collection of beautiful (and highly exclusive) footwear and accessories, it’s not surprising that this Noosa small business has not only survived but thrived over the last several decades – providing professionalism, exceptional service, and friendship to the greater Noosa fashion community. And now, after 15 years behind the counter, Lindy Searle has stepped up as the new owner of this much-beloved boutique, proving that if you love what you do every day, you’ll never work a day in your life.

For Lindy, her foray into footwear began at the ripe age of 15 when she worked for Mathers Shoes. She even remembers sneaking down the street to check out the competition – never once imagining that she would find herself the owner of that boutique some years later! “It’s a surreal feeling,” she says. “The timing was right. Rhonda had owned the business for 28 years and was ready to retire, so it all made sense. I love my job, I love my shoes, and my clients are like family – so I was ready for the journey,” says Lindy. It was a seamless transition given that Lindy had already been working with Rhonda for the past 15 years, with the last seven years as the store manager. Together, the pair have been to Milan and back on buying trips, as well as travelling to Brisbane to see the European fairs put on by the brands’ Australian agents when they showcase their international brands. So, when it came time to hand over the metaphorical reigns, Lindy was well equipped to step into Rhonda’s shoes.

Diana’s of Noosa is proud to carry a range of exclusive and highly sought-after European brands – many of which can’t be found anywhere else in Australia – and it’s a selling point that sets them apart from many other boutiques in the area. “We always have that beautiful hand-crafted shoe that is a little different and something no-one else in Australia has. Brands such as Baldinini, AGL Daniele Ancarani, and Menghi are all exclusive to Diana’s,” Lindy says. “And for those who may be lovers of the French brand Arche (featured on the cover and our biggest selling label), you’ll be pleased to know that a brand-new drop of these exclusive styles will be arriving just in time for Christmas.”

It’s these exclusive designs coupled

with the utmost professionalism and friendship of the staff that makes Diana’s of Noosa a true mainstay on Hastings Street. But for those wondering how the business may change with a new owner at the helm, Lindy says loyal customers have nothing to worry about. “There will be very subtle changes as we don’t believe in changing something that’s not broken,” she says. “However, we are hoping to expand our online store which is very exciting!”

And when Lindy and her husband Pete aren’t starting their day with a walk in the national park, it’s safe to say they are pinching themselves over their new business venture. “I am so excited for the next chapter and so proud to be a small family business on Hastings Street. I remember saying to Pete many years ago that there was no way I would ever work on Hastings Street or sell shoes again and look at me now! We laugh about it often because I absolutely wouldn’t change a thing. I love it.”

TURN UP YOUR ZEN

When you think about wellness, Noosa is probably one of the first places to pop into your head – and for good reason. Noosa’s unmatched beauty, sprawling white beaches, and array of wellness activities, makes it the perfect spot to unwind, relax, and enjoy.

BUILDING A BALANCED FUTURE

WELLNESS

Have you ever noticed a sign that reads “you are entering The Biosphere” as you drive into Noosa and wondered what it meant? Turns out you’re not the only one –and there’s a very cool explanation.

This Queensland gem is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. If you’re wondering what that means, Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation’s Executive Coordinator, Sharon Wright explains below.

“Biosphere reserves are places where people live in harmony with nature, a place that works hard to conserve its precious biodiversity while maintaining a balance between sustainable development and environmental conservation,” she says.

Designated in 2007, Noosa is one of just nine official biosphere reserves in Australia and was Queensland’s first. Noosa has long been a favourite holiday destination thanks to its sprawling white beaches, beautiful national parks, and local wildlife, so it only makes sense locals want to fervently protect and preserve it.

The Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation (NBRF) is a key player when it comes to protecting, preserving, and enhancing the Noosa Biosphere Reserve. Initiatives include restoring river fish populations, koala conservation, and facilitating new projects that enhance biodiversity and promote sustainable living in the Noosa region.

“The Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation is a charitable trust established by Noosa Shire Council in 2015,” Sharon says. “Our purpose is to fund research and education programs that aim to progress the global aims of the UNESCO Man and Biosphere (MAB) Program in the Noosa Biosphere Reserve (the Noosa Shire). Since its inception, the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation has funded over 20 projects in the Noosa Shire.”

Some of their current projects include a Glossy Black-Cockatoo (a rare and threatened species) bioacoustics monitoring project, and the Blue Biosphere project which provides research into understanding how iconic marine species use nearshore habitats in the Noosa Biosphere Reserve and how human activities may impact them. They also have the Koalas on the Move! campaign which aims to raise awareness of the dangers to koalas during breeding season (July-December).

“Our vision is for the Noosa Biosphere Reserve to be increasingly valued as living proof that by respecting [our] country and living in harmony with nature, we inspire happy, healthy, thriving communities,” Sharon adds. “It is up to us to all work together to maintain the Noosa Biosphere for future generations.”

A wholistic approach

Feel beautiful from the inside out at Revival Wellness Studio.

When you think wellness retreat, the thoughts of feeling strengthened, revitalised, and of course, being pampered, probably pop into your head. Well, Revival Wellness Studio on the Sunshine Coast offers all this and so much more thanks to its extensive list of wellness therapies.

When I first visited the studio, a little oasis in an unsuspecting building on Rene Street, I didn’t know what I was walking into. However, the team was incredibly welcoming and made me feel comfortable from the get-go. They started me off with a calming herbal tea and some light chit-chat. My personal wellness advisor tailored a plan just for me – as no one body is the same, no wellness plan is either.

With so many treatments available from EMSculpt, a new body-contouring treatment to HIFU 4D, or a non-surgical ultrasound facelift that slows the signs of ageing, it was hard to pick my favourite. If you’re new to the world of Revival Wellness Studio, and want to try something that no other studio offers, I’d recommend first starting with the Triple Nurture program, which consists of Endermologie - a full-body massage that reduces the appearance of cellulite, and Papilio, a fat-burning treadmill workout which targets fat loss and improves skin tone by incorporating infrared light and a vacuum (workout smarter not harder, let the technology do all the work!), before finishing off with a relaxing sauna session. My favourite part, you ask? The cold shot of kombucha or the ice-cold elderflower-scented cloth waiting for me after each treatment (it’s all in the details after all!).

On what sets them apart? Not only does the studio pride themselves on creating bespoke programs, but the team at Revival Wellness Studio will go above and beyond to make sure you’re comfortable and leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, so much so, your cells will feel like they’re dancing!

So, if you’re looking for some cellular rejuvenation, but want to focus on all-natural, non-invasive treatments, I’d recommend a visit to see the team at Revival Wellness Studio – I promise you’ll be feeling energised in no time.

Creating confident kids

Meet Samantha Dale Wilkinson – the presenter who has been using tools and tricks of the trade from TV and theatre to empower people all over the world to conquer their fear of public speaking.

Samantha has recently relocated to Noosa and is now teaching kids the same skills she teaches high-profile adults and is finding they often catch on more quickly! Some of the kids even go on to work in TV through her talent agency, Dare Enterprises.

Samantha herself was debilitatingly shy when she was young and had to work hard to conquer that fear. She ended up making a career in front of the camera and live audiences as a presenter and coached others to do the same. Pre-covid, her coaching

took her from Bellevue Sydney to LA, NY, London, Japan, and Hong Kong. Her clients include elite athletes, barristers, Ted X speakers and even a prime minister.

She’s now bringing these lifechanging tools and opportunities to the corporates, kids, and teens of the Sunshine Coast. “I’ve always come to Noosa to tune in to nature and unplug – my whole system calms down the moment I arrive. I’ve finally realised my dream to buy a home and work from here.”

ULTIMATE BUST SUPPORT

Find your perfect fit with built-in underwire support, custom-designed to your bra size and ranging from B-G cup

Home of Noosa’s most supportive and sun-savvy swimwear.

Noosa local Ally Delaney, founder of Wet Leopard Swimwear, was all too familiar with sunburnt shoulders after a day out at the beach. So, she set out on a mission to find a rash guard that was not only stylish, but one that was also comfortable and offered proper bust support. However, she quickly found there was nothing specifically made for women’s bodies.

“Rash guards were traditionally made for men in the 1970s for surfing, and the simple design hadn’t been changed since, so I thought it was about time a woman designed a rash guard for women,” Ally says. Fusing fashion and function to create a modern and uber-stylish twist on traditional rash guards for the female form, Ally designed and patented the first rash guard with inbuilt underwire support. “I wanted to make UV swimwear – something women wanted to wear, something they felt comfortably supported in, that other brands just weren’t offering.”

As a self-confessed beach lover, Ally is regularly out on a SUP or walking the shores of Noosa. “I love keeping healthy with my daily ocean swims and bush walks, and there’s no better place to do that than here,” she says. “However, the sun is really strong in Queensland – you can burn in less than 15 minutes if you’re not protecting your skin.”

The brand’s signature inbuilt underwire bra provides ultimate bust support for any activity, with custom-made bra sizing from B to G cups. “Women are amazed at how perfect the fit is, like it was custom-made just for them – they often say they have found their forever swimsuit!”

Made in Australia with premium recycled UPF50+ performance fabrics, the strategically placed panels and seams resemble a fitted corset, sculpting, smoothing, and contouring the figure. The design process is a mix of technology and creativity with the end result being beautiful and supportive sunconscious swimwear.

The underwire swimwear is offered in long sleeve and cap sleeve one-pieces and rash guards – it’s a must-have for your beach holidays and water-sport siren.

JEWEL COVE

With a steadfast sustainable ethos, every piece of jewellery Holly Ryan creates on Gubbi Gubbi Country has a story to tell. And just like her circular approach to artistry, the Sunshine Coast-born designer is back on home soil to open her flagship store by the sea.

Hi Holly! How would you describe your design aesthetic?

A celebration of nature.

Where does your affection for silversmithing come from?

My parents fell pregnant with me while studying the craft in Mexico in the 80s. It’s said in my family that silversmithing runs in my veins. I grew up roaming around the markets where my parents sold their jewellery, so I’ve always had an appreciation and respect for things that are handmade.

When did you first make the decision to start your own line?

When I was in my graduating year of studying Fashion at QUT in Brisbane in 2010, I had become disheartened with making clothes due to the environmental impact of waste, and had asked my mum to help me create a line of simple iconographic jewels to accompany my clothing on the grad show runway. Thea Basiliou selected my jewels to be stocked at her Brisbane boutique, Blonde Venus, and so was the beginning of my journey in jewellery.

Has your style changed and evolved over time?

Yes and no. My style as a jeweller has evolved as I’ve gained more skills, but I think that right now I feel more connected to my youth than ever before. My first collection 12 years ago was titled ‘Lush Life’ and I am about to bring it back,

with a few more skills up my sleeve. I’m embracing three dimensional shapes, with higher metal carat options and gemstones.

Who are some of your style icons?

Jane Birkin, Lee Radziwill, Patti Smith, Bridgette Bardot, Michael Basquiat, Nico, and Anita Pallenberg.

What influences and inspires you? Art, music, nature, people, emotions, feelings, materials, gemstones, and places. Life inspires me every day; you just have to be looking.

What made you decide to open a store in Noosa, and what has the process been like?

After my parents left Mexico, I grew up on the Sunshine Coast. Noosa has always been home and a great source of inspiration. It’s very healing and grounding for me. After 12 years in business, it made sense to me to open my first store here, where my journey began – to come full circle. I had always dreamed of opening a store here when I was younger, so to be living out that prophecy now just feels right.

Describe the vision behind the look and feel of the store:

The store is a celebration of handmade things. It was important to me to be hands on and design/create/build a lot of the furniture in the store or upcycle, refresh,

and breathe new life into old materials. I handcrafted the shelves, the mirror, and the appointment table. We have also collaborated on hand making the lamp bases in my store, with lamp shades by another dear friend Lana Launay of Shades Launay. There are pieces of furniture we re-sealed or re-surfaced or re-painted that are from my original Coolum studio, some from a Brisbane studio, and some pieces which were rescued from my Sydney studio. So, really you could say the space holds the energy of old and new, a true depiction of what it means to be ‘handmade’ (there is truly no greenwashing here) – a homage to collaboration, D.I.Y., and artisanal craft.

What are some of your favourite things to do on the Sunny Coast?

Spending time in the ocean, whether that means snorkelling, swimming or trying to surf, visiting waterfalls, hiking our various mountains, and doing my grocery shopping at local markets.

How would you describe the lifestyle in Noosa?

Slow, easy, driven by and one with nature, supported by community, and always an adventure waiting just around the corner.

BELLISSIMA FASHION

The high calibre of styling talent across Noosa’s fashion industry is unmatched – and so it should come as no surprise that Bellissima sits at the top of many locals’ lists of notable boutiques.

Catering to the carefree yet well-heeled women of Noosa, and known for their eclectic mix of established, emerging, and international brands, Bellissima has been a tasteful source of ready-towear fashion discovery for well over 20 years.

Situated on Noosa’s Rodeo Drive (Hastings Street), Bellissima’s cemented success shines through the carefully edited racks of garments that have just the right amount of international allure to perfectly complement the quirky designs and the newly opened sister store, Sabbia, perched right next door.

The director and mastermind behind this fashion empire, Marg Dooley, was always destined to work in the wonderful world of fashion. The industry has been in her DNA since she was just a young girl with her mother pursuing a career as a talented seamstress – fashion patterns, buttons, and sewing machines weren’t out of the ordinary when it came to home décor. Marg’s innate gift for discovering up-and-coming trends and her passion for fostering careers is unparalleled. Marg has been in the fashion industry for years now and says, “after nearly 40 years, I am still excited, enthralled, and continue to be educated.”

Marg’s love for fashion is now showcased through both boutiques and their expressive, boundary-pushing fashion that is all grounded by the laidback seaside charm that Noosa is renowned for. Building a sense of community within the boutiques and her natural covetable style will forever be at her core.

And just like that, it’s your turn to experience the hype – step through the entrance and be transported into an oasis of all things stylish, be wooed by the selection, and don’t pass up the chance to pick up a new wardrobe addition –or two.

Formula to success

Created for the consciously minded woman, Saya Skincare focuses on developing powerful botanical skincare that delivers results.

“It was never my intention to start a skincare brand,” Saya McDermott, founder and director at Saya Skincare, says.

Saya struggled with ‘problem skin’ while growing up, and revealed it was only until she started learning how to make her own botanically skin-savvy products that her skin started to clear up.

“I had bad breakouts, eczema, and psoriasis,” she says. “I tried so many products to help my skin problems, but nothing worked, and it often just made my skin breakout even more.”

“That’s really what got me more interested in the benefits of natural ingredients – the more I researched, the more I realised there were better and more natural options out there.”

What started as a quest for clear skin slowly grew into a side hustle before transforming into a full-blown skincare empire right here on the Sunshine Coast.

“I sold my products at markets in Noosa for about eight years and built a loyal customer base from there,” Saya, who was working as a graphic designer and commercial pilot at the time, says.

Saya Skincare is now one of Australia’s leading natural, luxury skincare brands, offering an uncomplicated approach to skincare that delivers beautiful, visible results.

“Each product in our range has so much research, intention and technical preparation, and the ingredients that go into each formula serve a specific purpose and function.”

Saya, who has been lucky enough to call Noosa home her entire life, created Saya Skincare with home in mind. “I wanted to create a range that supported this lifestyle, products rich in antioxidants and hydrating ingredients,” she says. “These formulations nourish and protect the skin from environmental stressors and assist with skin health and longevity.”

On what’s next for her label, Saya has been busy implementing eco-friendly packaging. “Keeping sustainability in mind, we’ve been working on brightening the range, introducing packaging that lets the natural colours of our formulations shine through,” she says. “We’ve removed our soft plastic labelling, making recycling easier for our consumer.”

A MODERNIST lover’s dream

Discover authentic Scandinavian design furniture at Great Dane Furniture. promotion

It’s no secret that we are slightly smitten with the Scandinavian style furniture store Great Dane Furniture. Founded by Anton Assaad in Melbourne in 2002 from a love of classic Danish design, the retail store has built quite a reputation for quality, service, craftsmanship and knowledge, and offers an exclusive range of designer furniture, homewares, and lighting by celebrated Scandinavian manufacturers and designers.

“Founded on a fundamental dedication to being great – not only in name but in execution – Great Dane has emerged as a brand with an uncompromising emphasis on excellence,” Anton says.

The design retail store, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, recently opened a new showroom in Brisbane, making it the only showroom in the whole of Queensland – and it’s nothing like you’ve seen before!

The showroom has been transformed into a modernist lover’s dream, with a light and airy backdrop complete with sage green and white walls and high ceilings to let the furniture and lighting do the talking.

As for what’s on show, Creative Director Megan Marshall spent many hours considering the natural beauty and enviable summer heat of Queensland, which inspired a new palette of materials including textural natural fibres like linen and cotton. A variety of celebrated designers from around the world are showcased in-store like Hans Wegner, Nanna Ditzel, J. L Møller, Verner Panton and Arne Vodder, to name a few. You can also view luxury dining chairs from Kai Kristiansen, handcrafted dining tables from Snedkergaarden and hand-blown wooden and glass sculptures by Antrei Hartikainen and Carina Seth Andersson.

So, if you are looking to add more Scandinavian design to your life, or in the market for new living, dining or bedroom furniture and lighting, look no further than Great Dane Furniture – it’s Australia’s number one retailer of Danish and Scandinavian furniture for a reason.

Get your folk on!

After a three-year hiatus, everyone’s favourite festival is finally back and it’s set to be bigger and better than ever. From humble beginnings in Maleny, Woodford Folk Festival, which was founded by Brisbane-born Bill Hauritz in 1987 to promote folk music, has become the premier music, arts, and culture event in the country, and this year is celebrating its 35th anniversary.

Woodford Folk Festival General Manager Amanda Jackes says locals and visitors from afar can expect six incredible summer days (27 December-1 January) of concerts, workshops, comedy shows, and plenty of fun.

“The sheer joy of returning to the festival after the hiatus of the past three years, reconnecting with our community and celebrating with inspiring artists and presenters, it is truly a privilege to work on Woodford,” Amanda says.

This year’s program is made up of a mixture of live performances from a number of well-known acts like John Butler, Boy & Bear, Neil Murray, Fred Smith, Mia Wray, and Electric Fields to name a few, art and craft workshops, late night cabarets, debates and films. And, an entire children’s festival, which is a whole festival in itself (activities range from puppet shows, to craft, games, theatre, circus and storytelling), not to forget the iconic Opening Ceremony and the Fire Event on New Year’s Day, which sees enthusiastic festival goers bring in the New Year under the stars.

“It is a festival for the people, by the people,” Amanda says. “The festival atmosphere is rich in a generosity of spirit and grounded in goodness and humanity. The festival seems to bring out kindness in us all and that mixed with the creativity of our artists makes for a powerful tonic.”

“Our program is abundant with brilliant and honed voices, resplendent musicians, splendiferous circus, preposterous comedy, absurd and curious cabaret, transcendental movement, enlightening talks, embracing rituals and numerous other playful moments. It is a place of celebration and joy and we love it.”

When asked how it feels to be part of such an iconic festival in its 35th year, Amanda replies, “It feels significant in its 35-year scale however also humbling in the legacy of so many who have contributed over the years. It is good to pause and reflect on this milestone. We are also energised with it as there is so much we want to achieve both with the festival and the development of Woodfordia into a parkland dedicated to the arts and humanities. We are keen to look ahead.”

“Woodford is a place where many of us have found the best version of ourselves.”

Twice as nice

Undoubtedly one of the best markets on the Sunshine Coast, ninety minutes from Brisbane, and only fifteen from Noosa Heads, grab your reusable bags, slip on your sandals, and hit up Eumundi. Home to top-notch street food, groovy tunes, and an eclectic mix of market stalls – you’d be hard-pressed not to find something you love.

At the first light of an emerging market day (Wednesday and Saturday) round up your family or friends and get excited to meander through the usually sleepy township that is converted into a theatrical city. You can expect no entry fees, a nearby children’s playground, and

heaps of smiles from marketeers.

The town has certainly come a long way since the 1900s when timber getters unwittingly fuelled and snigged huge logs from carts into the Maroochy River and everything surrounded just one street. Now the community embrace a thriving market scene that boasts a leafy backdrop, and you can even check out Eumundi Square micro businesses that are open for trading between 8:30am and 1pm on Fridays. Visitors and pets are welcome to join in the periodical fashion

parades and workshops too.

There is simply no better place to focus on shopping local and supporting small businesses than at Eumundi –recently awarded the best market in Australia! Eumundi provides entire mornings out and when you need a break from shopping and munching on delicious food then be sure to opt for a relaxing massage or beauty treatment. The market magic awaits!

SUMMER STATE OF MIND

It’s that time of year again; the sun is out, the days are long, the tourists fill the streets with such vibrancy and Noosa comes alive. Here’s our summer go-to guide on where to eat, stay, play, and have fun with the kids this holiday season.

EAT

Nothing beats slurping on oysters at Bistro C or diving into a bucket of prawns at the Surf Club, but why not try something new? Great coffee on Hastings Street can be found at both Noosa Social and Moonstruck Gin Bar. The Junction is also worth a visit come sundown with its nighttime fairy lights and local musicians. Need more options? Try an organic wine at Theos, browse a French-inspired menu at Flo’s Crêperie, or tuck into some fancy

cocktails at the hidden speakeasy, Nudge Nudge Wink Wink. Or, if you’re heading to Noosa River, don’t miss the newlyopened Apero for a cheeky nighttime tipple with friends.

STAY

When it comes to staying in Noosa, the options are endless. If you’re after beachfront views, say hello to Seahaven Noosa Resort. If you want to be amongst the hustle and bustle of Hastings Street,

we’d recommend paying a visit to the Sofitel. Otherwise, why not choose a hotel with a free shuttle to the beach so you don’t have to think twice about parking? Options like RACV or South Pacific (right next to the famous Sum Yung Guys restaurant) are great for the fam. Noosa Holiday Park is also a fun choice if your kids love to camp. And lastly, the hottest newcomer to the region, Bounce, is the most stunning backpacker accommodation you’ve ever seen.

PLAY

Aside from hours of fun at the beach, if you’re looking for something else to tire the kids out, surf lessons with Merrick’s or sail programs at the Noosa Yacht Club may be feasible options. And if the dreaded rain hits while you’re here, don’t worry, there’s still plenty to keep them entertained. Pixels Barcade (every child’s arcade dreams all in one place) or Chiggy’s skateboarding school in Coolum are both worth a visit.

For activities the whole family will enjoy, we’d recommend making the trek out to TreeTop Challenge on the Sunshine Coast, or renting a jet ski, stand-up paddle board or even a boat for the day! And if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, maybe try an efoil lesson with Fliteschool – where you literally fly and surf above the waves. Other more adult-friendly activities include the M.V Catalina Boat Cruise, where you can dance the afternoon away, or a relaxing BYO sunset cruise with Noosa Ferry.

EXPLORE

Get out into the Sunshine Coast Hinterland and plan some day trips. Try out the world’s first ‘coffee in a doughnut’ at the famous Kenilworth Country Bakery, or a gin tasting with live music at Pomona Distillery. Try a kayak tour with Noosa Everglades Ecosafaris (one of only two everglades systems on Earth) or climb Mt Ngungun, the easiest of the Glasshouse Mountains. A day trip to the hinterland would also not be complete without a stop in Maleny where you’ll find the most delicious selection of fromagerie. And if you’re still feeling energised, the 6.7k Maleny Trail is worth a visit. None of the above appeal to you? Equathon Horse Riding in North Shore offers one-hour private beach horse riding – now that’s cool!

“THE BIGGEST TIPS FROM A LOCAL: BOOK RESTAURANTS IN ADVANCE, GRAB A FREE BUS TO THE BEACH, AND ALWAYS REMEMBER THE ICONIC BUSH TURKEYS HAVE RIGHT-OF-WAY!” TRAVEL

KEEP YOUR TOES ON THE NOSE!

For 27 years, pro surfer Merrick Davis has been teaching the ways of the waves with his twice-daily surf lessons running (without fail) 363 days a year.

Whether you’re a local or visitor, you’ve probably come across the ever famous Learn to Surf van parked at Noosa Groyne. Twice Australian and World Pro Surf Champion, Merrick Davis and his team of dedicated surf coaches are there teaching day in, day out (in fact, they guarantee learners will stand up as soon as their first lesson).

It’s probably a no-brainer that surfing is a great cardiovascular exercise, however it’s also immensely beneficial for your mental health. When Merrick decided to retire from his professional surfing career he knew that Noosa –which was recently named a World Surf Reserve – was the perfect place he could teach from seven days a week.

“Where we hold our lessons is perfect for learners as we are protected by Laguna Bay, offering year-round, soft gentle waves,” he says.

When you sign up to a surf lesson with Merrick, you simply arrive at the van where the team greet you with a wetsuit or rash guard and a perfectly-sized foam longboard surfboard ready for you to head down to the beach. You learn about rips, waves, and footwork before hitting the waves with your coach.

“Our teaching technique is far superior, and I am constantly training my coaches to make sure clients get the best experience,” Merrick says.

He has taught the likes of Pat Rafter and Adam Scott, however his main clientele range from kids through to parents, and even grandparents.

When asked what the best tip was for a beginner, Merrick says, “Don’t take your hands off until you square off your body.”

The next time you feel like a workout for the mind, body and soul, why not try something new, and let Merrick and his team get you surfing like a pro? A final word of advice for Noosa surf etiquette in case you’re already hitting the waves: “The person standing in front always has the right of way and be careful at Tea Tree if you are a shortboarder, because the biggest longboard always wins!”

DAY FOR IT!

Dress

For those who enjoy a relaxing day meandering through local boutiques, this hub of hidden gem stores will have your arms full of exclusive treasures. Meraki Thread & Co’s are masters of the coastal-chic aesthetic and specialise in Australian-designed and ethically made fashion. Plus, they are the Sunshine Coast’s first boutique to offer a ‘take back’ recycling program for customers to promote a circular fashion movement. Your fashionable mini me can also discover some luxe finds at their very own children’s boutique – MooBaba. And for those who love to accessorise their abodes, a look into Coastal Luxe Homewares is a treasure trove for interior lovers.

Dine

Full bellies are downright unavoidable at The Wharf, but we’re not upset about it! A foodie’s paradise, this collection of eateries, restaurants and sweet treats are all found in one convenient locale. Including (but not limited to) the Mediterranean delights of Il Vento and Spero Greek Street food. Not to mention the refreshing bevvies by the beer aficionados at The Dock Mooloolaba or The Savvy Squire. And we’d be remiss not to mention the sugary goodness of Flo’s Creperie and Kenilworth Coastal Bakery – the coffee in a doughnut is a novelty worth trying!

Discover

The vast array of tours and experiences to discover at The Wharf is certainly its biggest drawcard. Atop the list is, of course, the wonderous swimming with whales experienced by Sun Reef. As Australia’s first swim with humpback whale operator, you truly get a sense of the years of experience and understanding the staff have. Getting up close and personal with these gentle giants is unlike any other experience and reaffirms how truly blessed we are as the migration season begins. One of our other favourite pastimes at the wharves would have to be the Salt Water Eco Tour which journeys through the Mooloolah River creating a deeper connection to the local Indigenous culture by combining maritime history, native foods, and unforgettable live music experiences.

Herbert’s

CRUMBED EGGPLANT, BABA GANOUSH, AND PICKLED KOHLRABI

For the crumbed eggplant:

4 large eggplants

1kg plain flour

2 tbsp paprika

1 tbsp cumin

1 tbsp turmeric

2 tbsp cinnamon

1 tbsp salt

1L water

1kg Panko breadcrumbs

For the baba ghanoush: 5 eggplants, charred 2 cloves garlic

1 tsp cumin powder

65ml lemon juice

Salt to taste

2 tbsp tahini

For the kohlrabi pickle:

1.5kg Kohlrabi, thinly sliced

8 shallots, finely sliced

3L water

1.3kg castor sugar

1.5L rice vinegar

1 tbsp turmeric powder

8 bay leaves

4 tbsp peppercorns

2 tbsp black mustard seeds

Herbert Restaurant is home to some of Noosa’s best plant-centric food and foraged ingredients, so it comes as no surprise that this recipe (care of Herbert Restaurant) features a delicious concoction of crumbed eggplant, smokey baba ghanoush, and pickled kohlrabi. Here’s how to make it for yourself.

Method:

To create the kohlrabi pickle, combine the water, castor sugar, rice vinegar, turmeric, bay leaves, peppercorn, and mustard seeds in a pot and bring it to a boil.

Remove from heat and allow to cool. Then, strain and pour the mixture over the kohlrabi and shallots. Be sure to store this in an airtight container for two weeks before continuing.

Preheat the oven to 200 degrees fan force and line a baking tray. Meanwhile, trim the edges of four large eggplants so that the sides are flat, then grill until tender. Once grilled place them into the fridge to cool.

Combine the flour, paprika, cumin, turmeric, cinnamon, and salt and separate into two bowls. Add the water to one bowl to create the batter.

Place the cooled eggplant into the flour and spice mix, dip it into the batter, and then into the panko crumb.

Deep fry the crumbed eggplant until golden then place them on a lined baking tray and bake for five minutes.

For the baba ghanoush, char five eggplants until cooked through and allow to cool completely. Peel the skin off and place them into a blender with the remaining ingredients (garlic cloves, cumin powder, lemon juice, and tahini).

Now it’s time to put it all together! Smear the baba ghanoush in the centre of your plate and make three small roses with the kohlrabi pickle. Cut the eggplant into six pieces and arrange them around the pickles. Add nasturtium leaves to garnish and enjoy!

FINANCIAL ADVISORY

Are you keeping up with the Jones’? Who cares!

In a world where we seek wellness in every part of our lives, it’s hard to know how we’re doing. We want it all – but honestly, it can be stressful and overwhelming! We happily outsource many aspects of our lives. Think about the experts you trust: your accountant, doctor, or personal trainer. A good professional must first understand the problem –before evaluating options, ideally collaboratively – then outlining a sensible solution for all involved.

Finances are a borderline taboo topic. We don’t usually grow up having conversations with family and mates about money. I’m not suggesting you let someone else tell you what your priorities are, however having someone help extract and prioritise YOUR clear goals and set a logical pathway is immensely powerful. Indisputably, financial and physical wellness are strongly correlated. Living with insecurity and anxiety daily is literally bad for our health (think heart disease, cancer and such).

Getting quality financial advice can carry many positive outcomes, including; security, confidence, better quality of life, improved mental & physical health outcomes and happier relationships.

Come and chat with one of our friendly advisers, who will take the time to get you on track for financial wellness.

What does your future self wish to tell you?

Grand plans for self-evolution are often made over New Years (cocktail of choice in hand) but how do you create real lasting change? We can’t predict what will happen to the world in 2023 but we can take charge of how we create our own outcomes. What is the outcome you wish to create? Here’s how you can aim to change for good in 2023 with this recipe for personal resolution success.

• Awareness: what changes can you make for your future outcome to be achievable? What foreseeable challenges might sabotage you? Explore internal beliefs, thought patterns and emotions as well as external influences: environment, relationships and personal responsibilities.

• Inspiration: what and who keeps you connected to your successful outcome? Look for words, phrases, imagery, people to surround yourself with to support you in achieving your vision.

• Micro-shift: distil your bigger vision into a practice that can fit in your back pocket, and anything becomes possible. I’ve seen a shift in communication style change an entire relationship. TRAVEL ADVICE

Journey to the land of penguins

One thing covid has taught us all to appreciate is travel. It has made us re-evaluate our lives and given us a thirst to see more remote places. These days, Antarctica is not out of reach and no longer reserved for just explorers. If you’re planning to visit this southern-most continent, then it’s something you need an expert to advise you on. And having been the first Australian tourist to experience Ponant’s Le Commandant Charcot – the world’s only luxury ice breaker –I would be very happy to help guide you for the trip of a lifetime.

Antarctica is another world that has been walked on by more penguins than humans. Le Commandant Charcot smoothly sailed across the Drake whilst serving free flowing Veuve Clicquot. Highlights include the sound of whales breaching outside my cabin, watching Emperor penguins from my cabin on the floating icebergs, and kayaking amongst the seals and ice floe.

If you’re considering a trip to the Arctic or Antarctica, when you book through Noosa Cruise and Travel or Helloworld Travel Cooroy, enjoy a bonus EUR400 per person on board credit. I invite you to attend a Ponant information session in Noosa on November 29 to receive extra discounts and contact me to discuss your Artic or Antarctica holiday today or to find out more details on our Ponant event.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Chase stress away

Everyone has occasional or acute stress when things go wrong, but recent years have brought chronic stress with challenges that have persisted over an extended period. Control and autonomy predict life satisfaction, which is why Covid-19 uncertainties have been testing. As with any behavioural change, it is thoughts and emotions that act as barriers to implementing self-care practices. I recommend you write a self-care plan that identifies activities, processes, and strategies that you can commit to. Here are the critical coping strategies for self-care:

• Control what you can and be okay with what you can’t

• Exercise before/after work (walk, run, swim, cycle)

• Get eight hours of sleep every night (9pm-5am)

• Learn how you can fully relax

• Turn off emails and your work phone out of work hours

• Have creative hobbies that you regularly enjoy

• Prioritise close relationships (partner, family, friends, pets).

A self-care plan will enable you to stay on track and live the dream with work, rest, and play.

Jump on the TikTok bandwagon

As a marketer, I live and breathe content creation. TikTok is one of the fastest-growing social media platforms around and has the potential to unlock many opportunities for your brand if used correctly. From being seen by your target audience and generating conversations with them, to creating an active online community that will support your brand, the benefits of this ever-growing video app can be monumental.

With 8.7 million Aussie users spending an average of one hour and 19 minutes daily on the app, the ‘content is king’ adage is seemingly true for this entertainment platform. And would you believe that users aged 35+ are the fastest growing audience?

If digital marketing is a priority for your brand, here’s why you should jump on the TikTok bandwagon:

• It’ s a captive audience

• The benefits for brands who advertise are unparalleled

• The organic algorithm has an amazing rate of growth

• Your business can get mentions by influencers or celebrities.

As an entrepreneur or small business owner, you want to attract as many clients as possible, while still adhering to an overall design style that conveys the creativity you stand for. You might struggle to find the colours and fonts that work well with your brand, or maybe you have no idea how to translate your vision into a design. It’s time to create a professional brand.

Branding has always been important, but the way your brand shows up online now (after the pandemic) is more important than ever before:

• Lots of people are still working from home and will continue to do so. This is an opportunity for you to get a lot of new eyes on your brand..

• People are craving connection. They want a reliability and a sense of community. Let your brand be a source of connection and comfort.

• Communicate. Your customers want to know in which way they can support you. Use your brand consistently.

• Retail therapy. With everyone shopping online, you want to make sure your tone of voice and visuals are on point.

Jack MacRae

With an attitude that’s part architectural discipline and part fluid creativity, artist Jack MacRae’s unique expressions of life by the sea are as brutalist as they are joyous, with an innate reverence for the natural landscape around him.

Hi Jack, please introduce yourself…

My name is Jack MacRae. I grew up between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast and am now currently living in Yaroomba on the Sunshine Coast. I studied architecture in Brisbane and I am about to do my final exam to become registered as an architect. I am a painter and collage artist who mainly does hard-edge colourfield works.

64 |

Go-to Aussie designer/store?

Holly Ryan in Noosaville, Fearon Brothers Fabricators, and Wildthings Gallery in Byron.

Where can we find your art?

Online at Aster + Asha or with Mon Abris and my Instagram @hell_ripper_boy_jack.

What’s next for you and your work?

This year has been huge and there’s still a lot to go. I’ll be back on board for Horizon Art Festival next year and maybe we’ll even see some architectural projects come to life.

How did you get started in art?

I was doing my masters in architecture studying modern architectural theories and I then was able to use the creative skills I had learnt in my practices to create my landscapes. Luckily my friend from Mon Abris was having an art show and basically pushed me into it. Three years on and I haven’t looked back.

What inspires you?

Brutalist architecture. It’s hard and straight to the point. I am also always inspired by being outdoors hiking and surfing, and also cartoons! They have the best use of colour and are so simple. My favourites are Spongebob, Rick and Morty, and Family Guy.

What do you love about being a part of Noosa’s creative community?

It’s a community that always has something going on. There’s also a lot of support in the area for everyone and everyone’s work, with many people behind the scenes pushing events and artists into view.

Must-have studio essentials?

Good scissors, 9mm snap blade stanley knife, UHU glue sticks (the German engineered kind), bessa blocks, noise cancelling headphones, homemade floor cushions (thanks mum) and enough space to dance.

My ideal day off is spent...

Surfing and camping – with a little afternoon fire and a nice bottle of wine with my partner.

Favourite spot on the Sunshine Coast?

Coolum Bays for sure. It kind of feels like you are away from it all some days down there. It has perfect waves and good snorkelling.

CLEAR MIND

Say hello to your new favourite non-alcoholic, zero sugar drink.

If you’re a Noosa local, chances are you’ve heard of Heads of Noosa or tried one of their delicious lagers before.

Founded in 2019 by brother duo Craig and Lance Masterton, Heads of Noosa has made a name for itself as one of the leading, if not the only lager brewery in Australia.

“We are one of the only breweries in the country that brews just lagers and lagers only!” Zach Large, brand and content manager at Heads of Noosa, says. “The crisp, refreshing style of beer we brew is perfectly suited for the Queensland climate and has proven to be a massive success so far.”

Well, not only do the brothers brew a good, refreshing lager, but they’re also making waves in the non-alcoholic space with their nonalcoholic, zero sugar Hop Valley H20, a hopinfused sparkling water. The duo launched the bevy after they noticed a growing trend of low- and non-alcohol beverages.

“Throughout 2019 there was a rise in the seltzer [soda water] category internationally, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic,” Zach recalls. “Plus, it had never been done before in Australia!”

The drink in question is simply made up of the hop plant Humulus lupulus, water and plenty of fizz. The plant adds a unique bitterness and imparts floral and citrus flavours and aromas to the water – all up it’s one delicious concoction!

“Expect a crisp, refreshing, and delicious alternative to alcohol with zero sugar, calories, carbohydrates or artificial flavouring,” Zach says.

Not only this, but it’s healthy for you too. Studies show hops can aid in digestion, assist with sleep and mood disorders and have been used for years to lower stress and anxiety.

So, whether you’re looking for a nonalcoholic drink or just after a refreshing afternoon bevy to round out the week, look no further than Hop Valley H20. Use it as a standalone drink with a slice of lemon and ice or try mixing it with your favourite botanical spirit – we promise you won’t be disappointed!

CRAIG AND LANCE MASTERSON

No one does sustainability better than Kelvin Grove start-up Benzina Zero.

Benzina Zero, which means ‘zero fuel’ in Italian, is shaking up the global transport industry with its new European-style electric scooters, which officially launched to the public on 15 September this year.

Business partners and scooter enthusiasts Joe D’Ercole and Ben Silver, who have 40 years of combined scooter selling experience, are passionate about creating more eco-friendly ways for commuters and delivery drivers to get around and have spent the past five years fine-tuning their designs.

“We’ve always been very passionate about scooters in general because they’re

practical, they’re fun, [and] they aren’t overly expensive for a lot of people to afford,” Ben says.

Joe, whose old company put about 18,000 scooters on the road in South East Queensland, adds: “We kept talking about doing a project to continue to get people moving around economically.”

The scooters in question, which are also available internationally, come in four models, the City, the Sport, the Duo, and the Duo+. The slick City model can go up to 80km on a single charge and has a top speed of 45km/h, while the Sport can go up to 90km on a single charge and up to speeds of 75km/h.

The ultra-versatile Duo range can reach speeds up to 65km/h with a range of up to 105km and have more than 20 different

attachments that can be easily fitted to carry all sorts of goods, from a surfboard to groceries.

Each Benzina Zero scooter costs less than $1 to travel 100km. You think that’s cool? Well, Joe and Ben are also pledging that for every scooter sold they’ll regenerate one square metre of Australian land to build a Benzina Zero forest.

“We got frustrated because a lot of people say [things] like our vehicles have travelled this far and have saved this much CO², which is equivalent to planting this many trees,” Ben says. “In fact, it’s not equivalent to that at all. We thought, we want to make a meaningful difference here. We already have zero emission devices; how can we contribute more.”
