JOURNALIST Hannah Doody IT’S BEEN A whirlwind year for the Style crew, and whether you’re embracing it or still trying to figure out where on Earth the months have gone, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! December is my favourite month not just (but mostly) because it’s my birthday month, but because it means celebrations, holidays, and spending extra time with family and friends. My horoscope on page 99 says that my cool, calm exterior will come in handy when planning any big b-day bashes. Anyone wanting to get on my personal “nice list” can feel free to refer to my DIY registry below. Of all the events in my jam-packed December calendar, I’m most looking forward to the Style staff Christmas soiree. This year, we’re having a pool party and I’m hoping my Secret Santa goes easy on me. One of those giant swan pool toys that you’ll find on page 25 looks good – seriously, what could go wrong?! If you’re out of brainpower (as most of us are by this time of year), take a good look through our various gift guides and give your loved ones what they really want. Our gift to you is taking care of the guesswork out. You’re welcome! On behalf of Style, I’d like to wish everyone a happy and peaceful Christmas and I look forward to seeing you all for a fantastic 2016.
See you out and about, Paul

A girl’s best friend... diamonds! Santa is missing the memo.
WHAT ARE YOUR favourite Christmas moments? The ones that build the anticipation for the special day? For me, the start of it is this very edition, our biggest gift to you. With the recent arrival of retail giants in Brisbane, the Wintergarden precinct has unwrapped everything you need this Christmas and we’ve got the fashion cover firsts. It’s time to jump off the hamster wheel and enjoy life; we all work so very hard all year round. A goal of mine this year was to tick off places I have never been and explore our world; a white Christmas in Japan awaits me. As soon as we enter the holiday season, our calendars begin to fill. There will always be those frazzled people around; it’s understandable. Sometimes we need to step back from the frenzy and remember it’s the time to give back to those in need, make someone’s year, and go out of your way to surprise with love and care. Thank you again for reading and a very happy Christmas to you all. However you celebrate, may you be happy and savour the moments. Enjoy the celebrations!
Stay stylish, Christie Xo

Mister Paganini is all about embracing a warm, shared way of eating with classic Italian touches. With dishes prepared using fresh, locally-grown ingredients, the Mister Paganini menu is perfect for sharing; everyone at the table will be able to try a little bit of everything. The mouth-watering menu includes standout dishes such as spaghetti with spanner crab, garlic, chili,

THE SWEETEST THING With one of the most beautiful Instagram accounts around, Caroline Khoo of Nectar and Stone spoke to Hannah Doody about her burgeoning dessert empire. CAROLINE KHOO IS redefining the meaning of “too good to eat” with her dessert business, Nectar and Stone. Inspired by her mother’s traditional Greek baking, Caroline has had a sweet tooth from an early age. Breaking into the saturated dessert market was hard work, but Caroline’s unique approach gave her an edge. “The way I go about process, design, concept is quite different and I think that this captured people’s attention,” she explains. Nectar and Stone’s Instagram is filled with beautiful images of desserts – delicately iced 18
Caroline Khoo
cupcakes, chocolates, fudge, and decorated ice pops – aiming to generate happiness and inspiration among followers. “Social media is extremely important; it is my community rather than a following. It’s not just about sharing the creative ideas but providing a space that is positive, caring and inspiring,” she says. Being featured on Martha Stewart’s website has been the highlight of Caroline’s journey so far, but Nectar and Stone is always growing and changing. Past collaborations with Mimco, Samantha Wills and West Elm have resulted in global recognition,
while upcoming collaborations will show a different and surprising side to the brand. Without a designated storefront, Nectar and Stone’s reputation as one of Australia’s best dessert designers has been built online. Catering for corporate events, weddings and birthdays, Caroline’s pastel pastries are admired before being consumed. SMART TRAVELLERS Need help organising your finances for your next trip? Get the best advice from the team at CommBank. THE HOLIDAY SEASON sees people travelling overseas for many different reasons, but many aren’t aware of the dangers involved with their finances. CommBank has heard all of the horror stories and has tips to get you and your bank account back home safely. PLAN AHEAD If CommBank sees your bank account is being accessed in London instead of Brisbane, they might freeze your account for security purposes. To avoid this, make sure you let CommBank know about upcoming travel plans. This can be done online via NetBank before you leave. Ensure you have a security pin set up on your cards and memorise it, as many countries don’t accept signatures on card payments. It is also a good idea to request a credit limit or have 20

WHOLE ROASTED FRESH FISH
ALL-ROUNDER
2014: BRASH HIGGINS “ZBO” ZIBIBBO – RIVERLAND, SA
2014: MENGOBA BREZO ROSADO – BIERZO, SPAIN My go-to wine for every cuisine, this all-rounder rose will please the fussiest of guests. Made with 100 per cent Mencia, it’s bright, fun, and most importantly way too easy to drink multiple bottles. Bring on the summer of rose!
Zibibbo maybe be an unfamiliar grape, but it’s definitely one to look out for. A fruity yet bone dry wine that captivates you with its aromas of lemonade fruit, white flowers and spices. BBQ seafood (especially whole fish and grilled Queensland prawns) will bring this wine to life.
CHRISTMAS HAM AND BBQ MEATS
2015: OCHOTA BARRELS “PRICE OF SILENCE” GAMAY – ADELAIDE HILLS SA
PERFECT PARTNERS
Breakfast of champions!
If you are not sure what wine to drink at Christmas, you’re not alone. Penny Grant, sommelier of Black Bird Bar & Grill, shares her wine and champagne matching skills for every traditional Christmas meal. FRESH SHELLFISH
Christmas in Queensland can get quite warm so it can be hard to enjoy heavy reds. This Gamay is great a little chilled down, with ripe red fruits and subtle tannins. Perfect for the all-important Christmas ham.
2014: HENTLEY FARM “BLACK BEAUTY” SPARKLING SHIRAZ – BAROSSA VALLEY, SA Some traditions should never change, and that’s why my first drink on Christmas Day will always be a Sparkling Shiraz. Hentley Farm’s Black Beauty from James Halliday’s winery of the year ticks every box.
NV LARMANDIER-BERNIER “LONGITUDE” BLANC DE BLANCS 1ER CRU – VERTUS, FRANCE Full of minerality, this impeccablymade 100 per cent Chardonnaybased Champagne is the perfect aperitif and will complement Australia’s best fresh seafood.
JUICY RED MEATS
2015: STARGAZER RIESLING – DERWENT VALLEY, TAS
Dry, refreshing Riesling! 22
There’s nothing I enjoy more on Christmas day than sitting down to a dry, refreshing Australian Riesling. Stargazer is a relative newcomer but is making waves in all restaurants, and fast gaining appreciation from all sommeliers. This Tassie Riesling will give great long acidity and will keep you well-refreshed. Think oysters, prawns, scallops and generous wedges of fresh lemons and limes.
2012: GOLDEN GROVE ESTATE “VINTAGE GRAND RESERVE” NERO D’AVOLA – GRANITE BELT, QLD A native Sicilian grape that provides lengthy tannins and bright red fruits, this punchy medium-weighted red goes hand-in-hand with the very best of red meats.

DESIGN LAUNCHES Young Australian designer Rachael Zheng launched a national collaboration with Target, showcasing her raw talent. RETAIL GIANT TARGET has fostered Australian talent for years, but their recent collaboration with young designer Rachael Zheng has taken their support to a new level by skyrocketing her design career. Target’s Australian Stars program celebrates home-grown talent while offering high-end designs at affordable prices. Their collaboration with Rachael follows previous partnerships with Dion Lee and Dannii Minogue. This new program has helped launch this young designer’s career on a national scale. “Target is excited to formally recognise and demonstrate our commitment to homegrown talent through Australian Stars,” says Target Managing Director Stuart Machin. The Sydney University of Technology graduate
Rachael Zheng for Target was selected from 12 finalists at this year’s Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival National Graduate Showcase. The young designer has created high-quality garments for Australians at reasonable prices. “I have been very fortunate to have the opportunity to design a commercial collection with Australia’s biggest retailer, with financial support,” Rachael says. Channelling 70s charm and the poolside glamour of Palm Springs, the 16-piece capsule collection
features clean lines, core basics and relaxed tailoring. This line has produced the perfect pieces for the modern wardrobe. “I have enjoyed developing the collection from concept to final product in this collaboration with Target, and now I’m excited to see women wear the pieces,” says Rachael. Rachael Zheng for Target launched in November online and in 34 stores nationwide, with pieces ranging between $29 and $79. WWW.TARGET.COM.AU
WORTH A MILLION Dust off the fascinators because Gold Coast’s annual Magic Millions Carnival is back! AS SUMMER HEATS up, so do the fashion stakes. The 2015 Spring Racing Carnival was a warm-up for Queenslanders as the 2016 Jeep Magic Millions Carnival races again. Over the first 12 days in January, the glamorous Gold Coast carnival – and Australia’s richest race day – will be celebrating its 30th anniversary. With $10 million in prize money, this carnival is becoming the must-attend event on the international racing scene. But it’s not all about the horse racing. The most important aspect of the day is, of course, the fashion. Trackside fashionistas will once again be given the chance to showcase their unique summer racing style at Myer’s Fashions on the Field, with the best dressed men and women having a chance to strut their stuff in the Jewel VIP Marquee. 24
Stuart Dew & Sarah Cumming
Fashionistas can take cues from this year’s Melbourne Cup, which saw a lot of 60s-style swing skirts, mid-length pencil skirts and unique wire fascinators, crowns and hats. The summer weather will most likely see a lot of flowing lightweight dresses with large hats and sunglasses adding to the accessory list. Men can opt for a smart casual suit, or chinos and a
dazzling button-up shirt and blazer; the options are endless. The most fashionable men and women will compete for up to $50,000 worth of prizes. The Magic Millions Raceday is being held on Saturday, 9 January at the Gold Coast Turf Club. Tickets range from $25 to $35. WWW.MAGICMILLIONS.COM.AU

A NEW HEADSPACE Missy Robinson is a creative being – a stylist, writer, blogger and speaker – but above all, she is advocating for change in the stigma around mental health. WITH AN IMPRESSIVE resume – from an Australian Defence Force scholarship to gigs in television PR and fashion – Missy Robinson seemed to have it all. But many times throughout her adult life, she knew “something wasn’t quite right”. “I would cry for no reason, experience severe insomnia and struggle with relationships; I had issues with money, drugs, alcohol and, at times, personal hygiene,” says Missy. “On the flipside, I would be motivated, social, and creative.” In 2008, Missy was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder type 1. After her diagnosis, Missy started her treatment, which included medication, counselling, and psychologist and psychiatrist appointments. After increasing her medication, she hit rock bottom, experiencing severe paranoia, psychosis and aggressive episodes. Missy knew she had to pull herself out of the
illness. She attributes her recovery to her passion for fashion and writing, as well as the support of her mother and boyfriend. “Fashion styling allowed me to grow my creativity, socialise and immerse myself in a ‘fantasy’ world,” Missy says. “Little did I know that the hobby I started in 2010 would lead me to a successful career and my main form of therapy.” In 2014, Missy became a speaker for national mental health charity SANE Australia. Today, Missy has recovered on her own accord; she hasn’t taken any medication or seen a doctor for over a year. Her blog, All About Missy, is a space where Missy can share her love of fashion, and reflect on her day-to-day life, and overcoming her illness. For those living with a mental illness, Missy shares the advice: “You have to want to be well and make the changes to your life accordingly. Find that inner strength and focus on your passion or purpose.” WWW.MISSYROBINSON.COM.AU

’TIS THE SEASON Pause the Netflix. Lazy girls, we need to talk all things party planning. EVERY PARTY NEEDS a planner (duh). And if getting things done isn’t exactly your forte, reading this lazy girls’ guide to event planning might be (will be) the most productive five minutes of your day. Firstly, wow! Taking on the responsibility of planning an event is a bold move! We applaud this newfound energy. This is your time to shine. Whether you’re excited or experiencing deep regret about what you’ve just gotten yourself into, try using those feels to get the ball rolling. Dust off your diary and make sure you jot down a few key dates... like when the party is. Now, every lazy girl has an equal and opposite counterpart. Whether it’s a mother, sister or bestie, there is someone close to you who sighs at your laziness and wonders how you’ve made it this far in life (if you’re lucky, you’ll have all three). Figure out who this person is for you; they might just be
your key to getting shiz done. Casually bring your party planning or lack thereof to their attention for any motivation or assistance during the process. Praise Mark Zuckerberg! It is totally socially acceptable to send out invitations via Facebook, which makes the invite process super easy. Just make sure it’s right for your event (so that’s a no for anything work related). One part of party planning that should be fun is putting together the perfect playlist. Forget soothing study tunes; you have a new form of procrastination. Just don’t forget to pass this playlist on to the DJ to avoid any musical disappointments. Or make sure you have some
other way to play the music. That’s a biggie. If you’re broke or simply unconvinced, don’t worry: sometimes decorations just aren’t worth it. An easy way to set an atmosphere and bring a space to life is giving your guests a dress code or theme. Whether it’s old school 90s or a classy black tie soiree, having all your guests dress in a certain style will automatically set the tone (and the pictures will look better!). In regards to food and drink, the lazy girl’s way is to pay someone to sort that for you. You might have 99 problems, but vegos ain’t one. Now go forth, fellow lazy girls, and party-plan to your hearts’ content. A lazy girl’s got no time to waste.

THE NEWEST WAVE It’s the ideology that’s been around for decades, but what does feminism mean today? Hannah Doody looks at the evolution of the feminism debate. FEMINISM HAS BEEN #trending this year. It’s no longer a clamour for women to burn bras and stop shaving their armpits; the debate has taken a turn and feminism is becoming more about everyday people. One of the big contributors to this movement was Emma Watson’s appearance at the UN, where her high profile helped draw attention to a smart, important, and moving speech about gender inequality and how to fight it. Although there was a widespread public backlash against the speech, Watson’s speech was integral in addressing common misconceptions and reminding the masses what feminism is really about. Put simply, it’s the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. The recent release of Roxane Gay’s novel, Bad Feminist, is a refreshing contribution to contemporary feminist debates that have devolved 34
into scenes more appropriate for a Mean Girls remake than serious reflection on gender and inequality. Gay lays it out on the table that she is what most could consider “a feminist, but a bad one – I’m a mess of contradictions”. She enjoys music which might have lyrics which are degrading to women, she knows nothing about cars, and considers mowing the lawn, killing bugs and taking out the trash to be “men’s work”. All this aside, Gay is “deeply committed to the issues important to the feminist movement… I have strong opinions about misogyny, institutional sexism that consistently places women at a disadvantage, the inequity in pay, the cult of beauty and thinness, the repeated attacks on reproductive freedom, violence against women, and on and on.” The most important thing about Roxane Gay’s novel is that she brings feminism back to the simple notion of what it actually is. From work to my share house and in nearly
every facet of my life, I find myself surrounded by strong-willed, powerful, successful and inspiring women. For me, the issue of gender equality is less easily recognisable; some days I don’t even notice it. But I recognise that I belong to a privileged cross-section of society. Just because gender inequality is more subtle or somehow absent from the lives of the privileged does not mean that we should ignore the issue completely. Many women still face issues relating to basic rights because of where they were born or raised, or other circumstances beyond their control. This is why I think it’s important for the discussion around feminism to continue. Those of us who experience this privilege need to advocate for those who don’t. We need to open up the discussion to as many people as possible in order to get a true equality movement happening. DECEMBER15
CBD FASHION MAKEOVER Wintergarden has new neighbours with the redevelopment of a lust-worthy fashion precinct. THE WINTERGARDEN PRECINCT in Queen Street Mall has been transformed into a shopping mecca with multiple popular international brands calling the strip home this year. Redevelopment has been in the works since 2014, with Broadway on the Mall giving way to a new buying avenue for Brisbane shoppers. Sweden’s H&M and Spain’s Zara are the newest super brands taking the Brisbane shopping scene by storm and it is all thanks to ISPT property group. ISPT General Manager Development Services Chris McCluskey says that, in order to attract high profile international brands, the company is “providing cutting-edge design with large footprints and the street presence these retailers demand.”
Occupying three blocks in Australia’s busiest pedestrian mall, the multi-storey fashion retailers have already been a hit with shoppers. At H&M’s opening last month, hundreds of people queued in the rain just to get a glimpse of the brand’s only homeware selection in the state. The growing hype around Zara ensured a similar level of shopping madness at its opening. With Uniqlo set to open in early 2016, we’re already anticipating unprecedented crowds for the Japanese retail giant. With additions like these, the Wintergarden precinct is quickly becoming the one-stop destination for all shopping tastes and desires. At the completion of this mecca precinct, Brisbane CBD will be home to an abundance
of retailers including Uniqlo, H&M, Zara, Dick Smith, Daiso, Crumpler and Jan Logan, all complementing Wintergarden’s existing retailers. WWW.WGARDEN.COM.AU

WHAT’S YOUR DAMAGE, HEATHER?
Tell me about your outfit today? My mom bought this red dress for me and I’m pretty lucky my mom has style. Heather McNamara came to school the other day in this hideous sweater that her mom bought for her, and it was the most hideous effing thing I’ve ever seen. My white tights are really hard to pull off; I look effing great in them and everyone else looks like crap so that’s why I wear them. My jacket… I don’t wanna brag or anything but this was featured on the cover of Vogue and my parents are, like, friends with the editor or something. Anyway, I get home one day and there’s this box on my bed and I open it and there’s the jacket with a note that says, “You HAVE to wear this.” I go to school the next day and everyone else is like, “That is SO very” and I’m like, “Whatever, it’s a free jacket.”
Following a sold-out Sydney season, Heathers: The Musical is hitting Brisbane. Elizabeth Best chatted to Heather Chandler (aka Kirby Burgess) about fashion, fame and being super popular. OFTEN REFERRED TO as the original Mean Girls, the Winona Rider and Christian Slater 1988 cult hit has been given a stage show makeover that’s every bit as darkly comic as the original. In this musical, Queen Bee Heather Chandler rules the school with her iconic red scrunchie, so we sat down with her to find out her secrets to being “super effing popular”. So Heather, you’re the most popular girl at your school; what are some of your top fashion and hair tips? Well, I mean hair just has to be totally big, right? The bigger the hair, the skinnier you look. Go with whatever suits your frame, but since I have a killer frame I can go super big with my hair. As far as fashion, there are some things I wear that I look effing awesome in and I 36
wear them because I know other people can’t pull them off. But since they wanna be like me, they wear them and look ridiculous, which I find totally HILARIOUS. How would you critique my style? You really need to accentuate your shoulders more… big shoulders make you look skinnier and your shoulders do not look big, if you get my meaning. Are you wearing, like, a kaftan? What even is that? Yeah, I have a teacher who wears that, so I guess if you wanna look like an old person that’s fine… What is your one essential fashion piece? My red scrunchie. I don’t like to brag, but I’m kind of the queen bee, and it’s my signature. It defines me as an authority figure. People look up to me because of this scrunchie.
WHAT DO YOU THINK THE OTHER HEATHERS REALLY THINK OF YOU? THAT I’M AWESOME. WHAT’S YOUR SECRET TO BEING SUPER POPULAR? JUST BEING SUPER EFFING AWESOME. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF REGINA GEORGE? KEEP TRYING, SWEETHEART. READ

PAINT THE STREETS From the secret laneways of the CBD to the walls of the Valley and bright murals in West End, it’s obvious there’s a growing passion for street art in Brisbane. Hannah Doody meets two artists who are decorating the walls of our city.
MEET: ANTHONY LISTER (LISTER) How did you first get into street art? It was a project put together by Brisbane City Council in 1997 where I ran around and painted a whole lot of traffic switch boxes. From there, I’ve just tried to stick mostly to uncommissioned work. What do you love about your work? I love that each piece is a challenge and that I’m only as good as my last production. This keeps me on my toes. I love that I have a voice to people. What was the moment you realised you had made it? Probably when I stopped delivering pizzas at the age of 22. What has been your favourite work to date? I couldn’t choose one 40
but I’d definitely say a piece with nudity that is possibly vulgar. Your work is on the walls of Geoffrey Rush and Pink. If you could paint for anyone in the world, who would it be? John Lennon if he were still alive. That’s it. What are your feelings towards the Queensland Government’s attitude towards street art? I don’t feel positively about the lack of positivity towards community creativity and the activation of it by the common public. I think it’s quite close-minded of the Queensland Government to be so controlling of such an important asset.
Burnett Lane
MEET: JOEL FERGIE (THE ZOOKEEPER) Growing up, were you always creative? I’m from a family of five kids who have each been heavily involved in different creative ventures. Being one of the youngest, it was my admiration for what my older siblings did, paired with my need to outdo them that pushed me to what I do today. How did you first get into street art? I first came across street art while catching the train and riding the streets and skate parks of Brisbane. These were the everchanging galleries where I found myself really taking a shining towards the hidden subculture. You studied Visual Arts at QUT; what was your motivation behind this? The only thing I really cared about during school was art, but it didn’t look like my OP was going to give me many options. Thankfully, QUT offered a Visual Arts course based on a portfolio. As much as people label Arts degrees as redundant, I am really thankful for the perspectives I gained during my time there. They were hugely eye-opening times for me. Why the alias, “The Zookeeper”? It came from a bunch of things. I love animals and I have an obsession for David Attenborough. Over time I found myself using animals a lot in my work, depicting them as metaphors in order to convey ideas and concepts. What are your feelings towards the Queensland Government’s attitude towards street art? I think our state has taken a hugely positive change in embracing the culture. They’ve taken to embracing the positives more than destroying the negatives. But people are always going to be afraid of things they can’t control or understand. As much as I’d love that to change, it’s human nature. For myself and all the other artists out there, we’ve got to challenge those perceptions.

ELEGANT EVENINGS After three years as an online boutique, Stokes Thompson Designs opened their first shopfront in Paddington. Owner Victoria Thompson tells us about her business and shares tips for formal dressing. What drove you to start your business? A lifelong interest in fashion and design has been my driving force. Tell us about the gowns you stock. We offer a range of gowns that are appropriate for the warm Queensland climate; long floaty dresses in light silks, which are suitable for both beach and resort weddings. What are the main formalwear trends we can look out for this season? Definitely glamour, style and elegance with bold colours – a regal and old Hollywood feel. The little black dress has a bit of a twist this season, as well as a bit of sparkle! What is the main piece of styling advice you would give to someone attending a formal or black tie event? If there is a dress code for an event, stick to it! If the invitation calls for black tie, see it as an opportunity to look your most gorgeous! If in doubt ask the host.

1.
What are your top tips for finding a gown? Work to your body shape, be conscious of materials, particularly in warmer climates, as well as the quality of the make. Be mindful of choosing a gown that is not so much fashion forward but more classic in style. That way it is not going to look out of place several seasons down the track and as such, is more of an investment piece as it can be worn several times. What do you love about your work? Fashion is a powerful form of self-expression. After spending a significant amount of time in the corporate world, it’s refreshing to be surrounded by so much colour. It’s also important to remember that fashion is fun!

TREND REPORT:
FRILLS & RUFFLES
ALICE MCCALL
ALICE MCCALL ALEX PERRY
Caitlyn Spanner investigates the flamboyant trend that is sure to ruffle some feathers this season. WHETHER YOU CALL them gatherings, flounces, ruffles or frills, these charming little extras are sure to make your outfit stand out from the rest. Flamenco dancer meets flirty femininity with this dramatic yet fun trend. Balmain, Chloé, Ellery, Rosie Assoulin and Salvatore Ferragamo are just a few of the designer labels that showcased dramatic ruffles in their recent SS16 runway shows, featuring everything from structured and oversized ruffles to small feminine frills If you’re looking to channel the high-end labels with a look straight from the catwalk, opt for frilled Victorian-style collars, bell sleeves and ruffled trains on skirts and dresses. The off-the-shoulder trend is still going strong, and the addition of a frill around the shoulders is a flirty way to pull off both trends at once. Australian labels Mr Zimi, C/MEO Collective and Alice McCall execute this pairing perfectly, resulting in a relaxed feel with a fashion-forward twist. Ruffles aren’t just restricted to casual outfits either! Labels like By Johnny and Alex Perry are taking this trend to a more formal level with layers of frills and gorgeous gatherings. If you’re looking to update your wardrobe with an uncomplicated trend that will complement your existing items, you can’t go wrong with ruffles. This versatile look will carry you through those blissful casual beach days, formal occasions and everything in-between. However you decide to style them, ruffles always look fashion-forward and sophisticated, and provide just the right amount of femininity. READ

THE MAXI SKIRT:
FIVE WAYS
It’s the piece we love to wear all year round because it’s just so damn versatile and comfy! Fashion Editor Tracy Johnston shares how you can utilise your maxi (or statement) skirt for any occasion.
LOOK 1 FOR A BOHO VIBE I’VE POPPED ON THIS SHEER LACE TOP WITH LAYERS OF JEWELLERY. THESE ARGENTOPURO EARRINGS ARE MY FAVES AT THE MOMENT. BOOTS WOULD NORMALLY BE MY PICK BUT HERE I’VE OPTED FOR A STACKED HEEL. OF COURSE, YOU CAN’T DO BOHO WITHOUT A GREAT HAT - THIS ONE FROM LYLA & BO IS PERFECT. NOW I JUST NEED IT IN THREE DIFFERENT COLOURS!
LOOK 2 A LEGGY MODEL WOULD TOTALLY NAIL THIS LOOK. AH WELL, I GAVE IT A CRACK. I’LL CALL THIS LOOK “NOT SO WILD WEST”. I LOVE A CRISP WHITE LINEN SHIRT FOR A MORE POLISHED LOOK. POP ON YOUR FAVOURITE BOOT (IN THIS CASE, MY TRUSTY TODS) AND I’M READY TO TAKE ON THE CITY FRONTIER.
Ask Grace lace top, Mura Boutique; Clara platform heel, Wittner; Earrings, Argentopuro; Fedora, Lyla & Bo; Chain about Town bangle, Colette by Colette Hayman; Tracy’s own necklaces.
ONE OF MY favourite summer staples is the maxi skirt. Popular for its floaty, relaxed feel, the maxi is flattering, comfortable and adaptable on so many levels. I love this AJE piece because of its voluminous skirt - it feels amazing when I move and the grafitti-inspired logo print makes me feel one part flamenco dancer, one part urban dweller.
White linen shirt, Uniqlo; Fedora, Lyla & Bo; Alex belt, Mura Boutique; stone and rope necklace, Colette by Colette Hayman; Suede Swinging day bag, Bardot; Tracy’s own boots.
LOOK 3 I’M HAPPIEST ROCKING ANYTHING ADIDAS SO IF I CAN WEAR A NEW SEASON TEE AND MY GAZELLES, I’M READY TO RUMBLE. THIS LOOK IS MY GO-TO FOR SHOPPING ON THE WEEKENDS, FASHION SHOOTS, DRINKING BLOODY MARYS... LIKE I SAID, ANYTHING. Roxy tee, Roxy; Perspex cuff, Bardot; Fringe clutch, Colette by Colette Hayman; Tracy’s own sneakers and sunglasses.

ORNATE LUXURY The unique pieces in Lannah Dunn’s jewellery collection have enchanted Brisbane’s fashion world. ESTABLISHED IN 1985 in Toowoomba, where the original store still stands, Lannah Dunn has maintained its royal status as home to the most desirable antique jewellery, and has recently seen the introduction of contemporary designs and the Miss Dunn collection. The Lannah Dunn monogram collection has been popular for the past 20 years and is set to adorn the pinky finger of many more this year. It’s a close-knit affair, with Lannah’s daughters working closely alongside their mother, and returning customers who have been regulars since daughter Eala was on her mother’s knee. 2015 marks the store’s 11th year in Brisbane and its 30th year in South East Queensland. Designed and made in Paris, and perfectly planned for a
pre-Christmas arrival, the Miss Dunn range is now available in-store. Visits to London and Paris have seen the return of a sumptuous and exotic array of antique and vintage jewellery. The new collection features magnificent one-off French diamond jewels, as well as precious stones and jewellery. Ultimately, the brand’s philosophy is to maintain a focus on fine jewellery and high-quality products while striving to maintain an impeccable level of service evidenced by their loyal clientele. In a world where mass production, lack of quality and reproduced design is all too familiar, Lannah Dunn defies these tendencies and promises to offer the same quality and service that began her business 30 years ago. ON-TREND FOR 2016
GO ON, TREAT YOURSELF!
CHRISTMAS ON THE BBQ
AS WE LOOK towards Christmas and the new year, it’s natural to consider what 2016 will bring in terms of event styling. This year saw a strong play on bold geometrics, copper tones and a nod to the retro vibe of the 60s. In 2016, we will rediscover a classic era with an elegant return to the luxe garden party. The Hamptons/Cape Cod look will continue to experience a resurgence. The timeless white-on-white palette and iconic silhouettes of the Adirondack chair and curved cane will experience a modern twist with pops of a singular well-chosen bold hues. Take your next event outdoors and position armchairs, umbrellas and cushions galore on a manicured patch of green. Increase the verdant visual with potted topiaries or espalier vine (of course faux is fine). Complete the look with accessories including throw cushions, picnic rugs and hampers laden with gourmet bites. All that’s left then is to source the jugs of iced Pimms – your own butler is of course optional.
THESE DAYS IT seems like we’re always doing things for others instead of ourselves. Here are a few ways to give back to yourself to help you look and feel great. 1. Relax. Stress seriously damages your skin. To combat it, find an easy weekly activity to help you escape your problems, even if it’s just for a few hours. 2. Treat yourself. Take some of that hardearned money and buy a nice product to hydrate and moisturise and let loose. Your skin will soon look better and you’ll feel the improvement! 3. Detoxify. Our bodies gather damaging toxins that deteriorate our health. Detoxifying involves more than drinking water and taking a nice bath. A healthy diet and exercise is crucial to properly detoxify, and relaxing will help make the toxins slowly disappear. 4. Go to the spa. Remember to treat yourself every so often with a trip to the local spa. You’ll improve your body’s health while you have a relaxing and pleasant day. Don’t hesitate; you deserve it!
BARBECUING HAS LONG been synonymous with Christmas in Australia. Whether it’s baked ham, roast pork with crackling or roast turkey, the smells waft throughout Australian backyards on Christmas Day. If you are rolling out the trusty Weber kettle, getting the smoker going or preparing some woodchips for the gas BBQ, it’s all systems go! But a few slight adjustments to the cooking technique might score you some brownie points. The addition of apple wood chunks to the coals or apple woodchips to the smoker box in the BBQ will add a new dimension of flavour to both your baked ham and your roast pork. Adding a marmalade glaze to the ham is incredibly easy and tasty. For tips on the perfect pork crackling, visit weberbbq.com.au. While the BBQ is hot, why not cook some mini Christmas puddings? Check out our website for this easy and reliable twist on the traditional recipe. Merry Christmas and happy barbecuing!

FESTIVE SEASON FLOWERS
WHAT’S YOUR STORY?
YOUR SUMMER IN THE SUN
THERE’S NOTHING LIKE gorgeous blooms to bring Christmas cheer to your home. This season welcomes calla lilies, holly (of course), native Christmas Bells, blackberries and the amazingly aromatic rosemary. When creating a flower display for Christmas tables, always remember: • Go for Australian natives; they’ll last longer during the summer heat • Consider eye height so you don’t limit conversation • Have at least three different flowers/foliage • Add berries for depth and Christmas feel For a festive yet simple display, buy a wreath! You can instantly add warmth and Christmas cheer by placing it on a table with a candle in the centre. Water the floral foam regularly to keep the wreath alive for longer. If you love DIY, make your own wreath out of spruce or gum tree. It’s easy and will last throughout the heat. Simply bend wire into a circle and tie the green foliage with twine. Merry Christmas from Poco Posy!
IN TODAY’S DIGITAL economy, you’re probably in the practice of researching a potential employer before an interview. And a prospective employer will no doubt be researching you. The future trends in the workplace suggest that people will be hired and promoted based on reputation. Keen to avoid bad hires, companies will be looking for candidates who already have good reputations. If you think your reputation is not aligned with who you think you are then it’s time to take a look at your personal narrative and reframe the story. But how do you accomplish that? Here are a couple of tips to help you: • Acknowledge you already have a brand • Reflect on personal values and beliefs • Ask trusted people how they would describe you to a stranger • Consider people you admire and respect and think about how they represent themselves • Think about your interactions with various people and consider how you reflect your brand through communication

STAY COOL FOR SUMMER
BRISBANE SET TO FIRE
EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
QUEENSLAND SUMMERS CAN be extreme, with 35-degree heat one day and hailstorms the next. Your roof plays a pivotal role in your experience with the weather conditions, such as energy costs, solar life, and structural integrity. Utilising technologically advanced paints (such as Dulux AcraTex’s Cool Roof) with lighter colours increases reflectance and decreases heat absorption, resulting in cooler living areas and roof cavities. This can result in up to 30% worth of reduction in cooling costs, and a further 4-7% saving as a result of reduced stress on wiring. The average family could save around $550 a year in energy costs. Up to 10 tonnes in carbon emissions over the life of a 100sqm roof can be saved, with an extended life and increased performance of up to 50% for solar. Interestingly, the structural integrity of a roof can be increased by 15-25%, which in many cases could prove the difference between losing and keeping a roof during damaging storms.
BIS SHRAPNEL RECENTLY announced that the price of houses in Brisbane could rise by 13.2 percent by 2018, making it one of the strongest predicted growth cities in the country. While it is believed that low interest rates are the key driver of the recent growth in home values, dramatically different capital growth performances throughout the capital cities indicate that this is not the case. In fact, it’s more likely that the growth in the property market is due to an increasing rate of employment. Full-time employment is ramping up in Brisbane. In the last year alone, 24,713 full-time jobs were created, compared to 26,036 in the period between 2008 and 2014. The role of employment goes some way to explaining why home value growth has been much stronger in Sydney and Melbourne than other capital cities in recent years. With this recent increase in job creation in Brisbane, we can look forward to an increase housing demand throughout 2016.
THE BEST LEADERS have the ability to understand and manage not just their own emotions, but also those of their team. It’s called emotional intelligence. Some people are born with this leadership tool, but others have to develop it. If you want to see an emotionally intelligent leader in action and decide for yourself if it’s a skill worth pursuing, take a look at Richard Branson and the way he works with his team members. He puts staff first for a very good reason. Emotional intelligence helps leaders think their responses through before reacting. Imagine how the team would feel if they see their leader lose the plot in front of them! Without emotional intelligence, leaders aren’t able to gauge the mood of their teams or pick up on the unspoken feelings. And it’s emotion that helps or hinders team success. Do you lead with emotional intelligence? Start getting to know yourself and watch your emotional intelligence grow from there.

FOOD+DRINK HELLO, DARLING! In the heart of Paddington, newcomer Darling & Co oozes charm and sophistication. Hannah Doody discovers what is set to shake up Brisbane’s inner city dining scene.
House smoked fish, horseradish, poached egg, woodland sorrel
IN THE SPACE where local favourite Iceworks previously resided now sits Darling & Co, a light, airy and spacious new hangout featuring open‑plan dining areas, cosy booths and slick function spaces. Head Chef Giuliano Melluso, formerly of Bucci and Michelin star London hotspot Kitchen W8, creates food with his philosophy to “let the vibrant flavours of fresh produce take the spotlight”. A mouth-watering menu has been created to perfectly reflect the values of Melluso and owneroperator Jacqueline Madden, who has a passion for sustainable produce. Partnering with Graham Twine, the team are to source the best seasonal ingredients from farms between Noosa and Byron Bay. The atmosphere in Darling & Co is friendly, and it’s clear that Madden’s vision has been executed perfectly with a space that transitions seamlessly from breakfast to dinner. The bar menu offers a formidable list of international and Australian wine as well as
handcrafted cocktails, with the dinner menu featuring a number of starters, small plates, pizzas, mains and desserts. To start, we try the market oysters. Coupled with the accompanying finger lime, they are incredibly fresh and flavoursome. The chorizo and manchego croquettes have a perfectly crisp coating and burst with oozy goodness on the inside. The bahn mi sliders with Borrowdale pork belly and Sriracha mayo are a standout, as is the hand-rolled potato gnocchi with peas, oyster mushrooms and truffle mascarpone. We all leave feeling incredibly satisfied and agreeing that we could easily indulge in a lazy long lunch at Darling & Co any day of the week. The relaxed vibe, delicious flavours on offer, cold-pressed juices, takeaway coffee and breakfast options are enough to tempt me back. Until next time, darling! AVOID A FESTIVE FAIL Make your office party memorable... for the right reasons. Sarah McAlpine shares how to treat your staff to a superb soirée. MY FAVOURITE TIME to venture out in Brisbane falls between the end of November and midlate December. Not only is seedy facial hair on the way out (love your commitment to charity, hate the visual assault on my eyeballs masked as “Movember”), but Christmas party season is upon us... and there’s no better time to peoplewatch. There’s the awkward dance moves, the deep and meaningful conversations and the occasional unexpected pash between two people who you just know will regret it in the morning. We’ve rounded up our top tips to avoid various HR blunders and make sure your office party is

memorable for the right reasons. 1. I don’t think putting on a decent bar tab is an innovative idea to anyone, so I’m going to skip right past that and talk food. You don’t need to worry about a sit-down dinner, but you’ll need to provide plenty of delicious (or at least edible) options to feed the masses. Make sure you double-check for vegos, vegans and those avoiding gluten to make sure everyone is chowing down on something to soak up the booze. 2. Hold your party on a Friday afternoon during work hours. Anyone wanting to duck out at 5pm can do so freely, and those who wish to use and
From the Style vault! abuse the bar tab will have all weekend to nurse their hangovers and fester in their post-drinking anxiety (in keeping with tradition, I will be doing exactly that after the Style Christmas party). 3. The key ingredient to your seasonal soiree is a schedule of events that will keep partygoers entertained and in line. Don’t pass up an opportunity to work in some team bonding, especially when it comes to departments that might not work together all the time. Add some structure to your event with fun, easy and interactive activities like Secret Santa, trivia, scavenger hunts and karaoke!

NEW VEIN GLUE
TREAT YOUR BROWS
HOT HEAT & MIGRAINES
MEDICAL SUPERGLUE (CYANOACRYLATE glue or Venaseal) occlusion of veins has been getting a bit of press this month. It’s a relatively new procedure to be offered in Australia and claims to be the fastest method of vein closure. Another advantage is that two legs can be treated at the same time; there is no need for anaesthetic and no need to wear compression stockings post-treatment. However the procedure is not suitable for all veins and there is a relatively high rate of inflammation. Also Vein Glue comes with an expensive price tag and no Medicare rebate. The UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has stated that “there is not much evidence about how well cyanoacrylate glue occlusion for varicose veins works or how safe it is.” NICE also warns that, due to little published evidence about the procedure, there may yet be unforeseen rare or uncommon risks. The Leg Vein Doctor awaits more mediumand long-term trial data before we can safely advocate its use.

DO YOU FIND your migraines intensify due to the summer heat? While everyone else is full of festive cheer, Queenslanders are battling the common triggers brought on by this hot climate. Summer migraine sufferers dread the hot weather. At times, they are unable to leave home due to the intense heat, summer allergies, humidity, and the strong glare from the sunlight. It can be stressful and difficult to travel on holidays, go to the beach or even have a BBQ with friends and family. With summer just around the corner, there are some safe tips on how to manage this: • Keep hydrated and carry a water bottle • Wear sunglasses • Wear a wide-brimmed hat • Carry an umbrella if necessary • Avoid looking in the direction of the sun’s glare These tips can help reduce the severity of migraine attacks, but we recommend you enlist expert help to treat the cause of the problem so you can enjoy Australia’s beautiful summer!

IT’S PARTY SEASON!
DEVELOP A GROWTH MINDSET
A GIFT FOR YOURSELF
IT’S EASY TO get caught up in shopping for gifts. So easy, in fact, that we often see clients leaving it too late to start their treatments prior to the busy Christmas social season. It is best to plan your treatments well in advance so that you’re looking relaxed, fresh and natural by the time your key event rolls around. If you want to look amazing in that special outfit for New Year, then CoolSculpting could be your answer. Effects kick in after four to eight weeks, so now is the time to book. Ideally, injectable and other cosmetic treatments should be undertaken one or two weeks prior to your event. If you happen to find yourself strapped for time closer to the date, we have some amazing treatments that will give you a quick freshen-up. HydraFacial removes any buildup of dead skin cells and infuses the skin with antioxidants, leaving your skin radiant and soft. Contact the clinic for your invitation to a special free event on 19 November at 5.45pm. There will be great giveaways on the evening, including CoolSculpting treatments valued at $795!
UNLESS YOU ARE one of the few true geniuses, you will need to make a concerted effort to succeed in life. Failing at something (or many things) does not mean that you are unintelligent or incapable. Disheartened by failure, people will often refuse to pursue a venture further for fear that it’s a waste of their time and effort. People with this fixed mindset will often avoid challenges because they think they can’t learn to improve their ability. Intelligence can be improved with a learning mentality. Some people will use failure as a motivator and stepping stone to competence. This is called a growth mindset. Remember, having to work hard to reach your goals does not mean you lack ability or are any less capable than those for whom success comes seemingly so easily. You simply need to make thoughtful, committed choices on the journey toward success. The truth is we all have enormous capacity to succeed when we try.
SOMETIMES THE BEST Christmas present is the one you give yourself. Taking care of your body is important, so what can you do? One very important step for women around the age of 30 is to consider having eggs frozen. If you are busy forging your career or have not yet met your life partner, freezing eggs is like taking out insurance – you may need it or you may not. Do not gamble having children when you consider the time is right, as many women discover their egg production has diminished considerably. It’s simple and cost-effective, and saves you a great deal of anguish later. Another gift to yourself is learning more about the benefits of the MonaLisa Touch treatment. For the rarely discussed subject of vaginal dryness, pain, itchiness, burning and incontinence, this treatment changes lives. These symptoms are especially noted in menopausal and postmenopausal women, and women who have undergone chemotherapy. If you have any concerns, talk to your GP about a referral to a gynaecologist.

CLEANER TEETH WITH CHARCOAL? The newest natural alternative to teeth whitening involves a gooey black, zombie-esque paste, writes Candice Jackson. PEARLY WHITES ARE meant to be your best accessory, right? Well, in the eternal search for my brightest smile, I ditched my regular toothpaste and instead switched to brushing with charcoal for a week. But step away from the barbecue, because not all charcoal is created equal. The super-fine black powder I’ve been using is activated coconut shell charcoal, mixed with other 100 per cent natural ingredients within the holistic teeth whitener, Warpaint. I was pretty excited to see if a chemical- and additive-free whitening product would have similar effects to whitening strips or toothpastes. So too
were my fellow Stylers, who opened the tub in my absence and left charcoal dust on my desk. Word to the wise: open it carefully and brush your teeth without your makeup or favourite cute top on; it stains everything! Water turns the messy dust into a gooey black paste and you’re encouraged to brush in small, gentle circles with your mouth closed to avoid the inevitable black dribble. My mouth was mostly closed for my first official
brush but I couldn’t resist a peek. A quick glance in the mirror told me I looked like a crazed zombie. I decided that snapping scary selfies and sending them to my mates on their work commute was essential (sorry!). After the selfie mania subsided, I quickly started to notice some exciting results after repetitive use. Head online to see my full Style trial of this product, including a step-by-step guide, toothpaste comparisons, and the results... no white lies! WWW.ARMEDWITHWARPAINT.COM

MAKEUP: NO SWEAT! Want to keep your face in place when the heat rolls in? Elizabeth Best shares the beauty tips you need to know this season.
SUMMER CAN ALSO DO A NUMBER ON YOUR SKIN; ’TIS THE SEASON FOR SUNBURN, SWEAT AND CLOGGED PORES. SO HOW DO YOU SAVE FACE IN THE FESTIVE SEASON?
MOST PEOPLE LOVE summer. But when it comes to beauty, it’s the makeup junkie’s least favourite season. You put in all that hard work to perfect your look only for it to melt right off the canvas as soon as you step into the sun. Summer can also do a number on your skin; ’tis the season for sunburn, sweat and clogged pores. So how exactly do you save face in the festive season? First, pare back your routine, especially when 80
it comes to concealing products. Anything more than a BB cream and you may find your pores congested. Go for blends with SPF protection to stay sun smart and gorgeous at the same time. Secondly, a setting spray is your very best friend. This wonder product allows you to ditch all your powders, primers and setting products and tools in one fell swoop, holding your makeup in place but still giving your skin room to breathe.
Then it’s time to tackle the eyes. Here’s another opportunity to scale it down and ditch the eyeliner in favour of a pumped-up mascara. Waterproof mascara with a tightline effect is ideal here, as it lengthens your lashes, is impervious to pesky moisture, and makes it look as though you’re wearing liner when you secretly aren’t. Finally, pop on your lip gloss of choice and there you have it – a simple summer look, no sweat. DECEMBER15

NEW SUMMER LOCKS
Before
The team at Butterworth & Co transformed stylist Talia Skips’ look. Owner and technical director Leanne Butterworth reveals how they took Talia from basic brunette to blonde bombshell. HERE’S HOW BUTTERWORTH & Co transformed Talia’s look: Step 1. The hair was cleansed with Unite U Luxury Pearl Honey shampoo and conditioner, then cut to remove all unwanted length prior to the lightening process. Step 2. We then applied the Step 1 and 2 Olaplex treatment, which prepped the hair prior to colouring. Step 3. The hair was then lightened by several shades using Pravana Blonding Powder and left for one hour. 82
Step 4. The hair was then cleansed and our Pravana Express Toner in Pearl Blonde was applied for five minutes. Step 5. The hair was washed and conditioned with Unite products. Step 6. The hair was sprayed with Unite’s 7 Seconds Leave In Conditioner and combed through and styled using Unite’s Lazer Straight Relaxing Fluid. BUTTERWORTH & CO 4/267 GIVEN TCE, PADDINGTON P 3367 2262 WWW.BUTTERWORTHANDCO.COM.AU
WHAT WERE YOU HOPING TO ACHIEVE? Talia wished to ultimately be blonder with a fashion-forward look to be more in line with her career. WHAT YOU DID ACHIEVE? We reached a beautiful blonde colour that accentuates her complexion and eye colour. Her new style cut is fresh for the summer season and bang on trend. WHAT WAS THE IDEA BEHIND THE PROCESS USED? As Talia is quite dark naturally, we had to lighten the hair several shades, and applying Olaplex ensured the quality of her hair was protected during the lightening process. We then added a final colour to achieve a beautiful glossy pearl blonde result.

FIND YOUR BALANCE The festive season is fast approaching and Wesley LifeShape Clinic has come up with some tips to help maintain a balance this silly season. IT’S THAT TIME of year where extra calories seem to lurk around every corner, and it’s not uncommon to see our healthy habits go out the window. So how do we still enjoy this special time of year while maintaining our waistline? Here are our top tips to embrace the silly season with some balance: PLAN AHEAD Planning is a key component to maintaining discipline. If you have a catered event coming up, plan to eat a healthy meal or snack prior to attending to avoid arriving hungry.
CHOOSE CAREFULLY Opt for lean cold meats, seafood and salad options rather than diving headfirst into the Christmas pudding. Choose one must-have and stick to one portion of that as a treat. LIMIT ALCOHOL & MAINTAIN HYDRATION Choose lighter beverage options, and dilute wines and spirits with mineral water or ice. Ensure you intersperse your alcoholic drinks with water to maintain your hydration. KEEP ACTIVE Look for opportunities to increase the amount of incidental activity you do each day. Opt for the stairs, walk the dog or even play cricket in the backyard with the family. A pedometer could make a great gift for friends or family to help motivate them to keep moving!
ENJOY YOURSELF Christmas is almost always chaotic. If you’re an emotional eater, the combination of stress and an abundance of food can be a dangerous one. Remember to stop and make some time for yourself this holiday season. WESLEY LIFESHAPE CLINIC 3/19 LANG PDE, MILTON P 3377 7888 WWW.WESLEYLIFESHAPE.COM.AU

Jonathan Adler x Officeworks
SIGNATURE STATIONERY Renowned designer Jonathan Adler has joined forces with stationery giant Officeworks to create a chic new line NEW YORK-BASED DESIGNER Jonathan Adler may be known for his modern homeware designs, but his recent shift in focus to stationery has been nothing short of amazing. Creating two sophisticated lines for Officeworks, Black/Gold and Pink/Navy, the entire collection stays true to Jonathan’s irreverent and bold designs while giving Australians the chance to show of their own personal style through their stationery. The Black/Gold collection is polished and elegant, with flecks of gold across plain black designs on a range of magazine files, iPhone cases, lunch totes, animal-printed notebooks, portable chargers and travel mugs. The Pink/Navy line is perfect for the glamorous and eccentric shopper with pops of fuchsia and
baby pink emphasised on navy designs. This range is available on luggage tags, to-do pads, iPad cases, earphones and water bottles. Fashionable accessories aren’t solely reserved for the wardrobe and Jonathan Adler has proved that with this new chic line. This collaboration with Officeworks came to light in response to the growing demand for stationery to be as on-trend as the latest fashion. “Stationery has bridged the ‘runway to
workspace’ trend, triggering the desire to mix and match with our fashion choices,” says Officeworks spokesperson, Alex Staley. The stationery giant worked closely with Jonathan and his brand to create this new collection and provide customers with the tools to design a stylish workspace. The entire collection is currently in stores across Australia, with items starting from just $5.99 WWW.OFFICEWORKS.COM.AU

KNOW YOUR NORTHSIDE Place Estate Agents Simone Weigall shares some of the key properties she has sold during her 16 years in the industry, making her your go-to agent for Brisbane’s inner northern suburbs.
26 LOVEDALE STREET, WILSTON What’s the property? It’s four years old with panoramic views, positioned on an 809-square metre block very close to Wilston Village. What makes this property unique? It’s spread over three levels with a gymnasium, wine cellar, lift and five-car parking. How did you market and attract buyers? Online as a four-week campaign with three open houses and print and online advertising. I think the basement feature ended up sealing the deal!
32 GRAFTON STREET, WINDSOR What’s the property? It’s a beautiful three-bedroom cottage on a very small block. Recent renovations kept its original Queenslander charm. What makes this property unique? Its original features and proximity to the CBD. How did you market and attract buyers? Listed as For Sale by Negotiation. Fifty-five groups came to the open house, eight made offers and we ended up selling to a young family.
HOME
12 WATSON STREET, NEWMARKET What’s the property? Positioned in a prestigious and tightly held street, surrounded by quality multimilliondollar properties. What makes this property unique? It’s a blue chip location with panoramic city views on a large allotment (1328 square metres). How did you market and attract buyers? Listed as For Sale by Negotiation via print and online media, but it was my weekly emails that attracted the buyer, making it a great result for both parties.

AN
A DAY IN SEATTLE Ranked one of the best cities in the US to live, it’s not surprising that the colourful, vibrant and artistic metropolis of Seattle is by far one of Elle Raison’s favourite American places to visit. WHETHER YOU’RE JUST passing through or have more time on your hands, there are certain things that tourists must experience while in stunning Seattle. Let’s start with everyone’s favourite way to embrace culture: food! Searching hashtags on Instagram is my favourite way to find foodie gems but if you don’t have time to scroll through endless pictures of beautiful cuisine, then I recommend heading straight for some of my favourite food havens. For breakfast, you can’t go past The London Plane – a café, deli and florist all in one! The avocado on toast is a game-changer, and their melt-in-your-mouth choc chip cookies are well worth the moment on the lips. As a self-confessed coffee junkie, I’m one tough critic, but Elm Coffee Roasters is a premium brew to be savoured.
Who says holidaying can’t be healthy? My top lunch spot is Homegrown, and boy do they live up to their name with salads and soups that taste fresh enough to have just come from the garden. My most cherished time in Seattle was spent sipping on cocktails at sunset while enjoying a Mexican alfresco feast at Little Water Cantina. Exploring the Washington state’s treasure doesn’t have to be expensive, so drag yourself out of that food coma and get moving! The Chihuly Garden and Glass instalment is unreal, and a wander down to Lake Union to capture the view on an iconic scenic Seaplane can only be described as majestic. Then there’s the world-famous Pike Place Market, brimming with the freshest produce from local vendors. For the ultimate US adventure, Seattle is a destination you don’t want to miss.
