DECEMBER 2018

EDITOR’S NOTE Gah ... another December has crept up on us here at Style Media and we hear ourselves muttering those words “where has the year gone?” I’ve never known a year to go by so quickly and for so many new places to open in Brissy during 2018. But, now it’s Christmas time and who doesn’t love the thought of holidays, beach days, festive food and shopping for the perfect gift for our loved ones? Myself and the Style crew loved getting out amongst the beautiful Roma Street Parkland and South Bank Parklands to capture this month’s cover shoot. It was such a joy to work with Jordan Kahu and Jess Kent and their divine family. They took a sneak peek at the Brisbane Marketing Christmas program (how about those beautiful Christmas lights?) and explored our favourite CBD parklands with their adorable children Jayla and Jude. Talk about a genetically blessed family! On the subject of families, from the Style family to you, we wish you a safe and fun festive season with your nearest and dearest.

My plus one As the event season comes into full swing, we chat to two women whose ‘plus one’ strays from the stereotypical significant other. WORDS LAURA FRENDON

T

hey’re the person we think of when we get invited to an event and the person we go to when we have an experience we want to share. They comfort us when we don’t know anyone else and they’re willing to stand by our side while we sit through yet another speech from someone we don’t know. They abuse bar tabs with us, people watch with us, and are our mandatory

PAGE 8

guest whenever we need a chaperone. They’re our evening date, our beloved companion, our plus one. As we come into the party season, there are endless events to attend and be a part of. While most are exciting and full of fun and numerous amounts of people, it’s nice to attend these things with not only someone we love, but someone who can stand by our side when we’re awkwardly

waiting to bump into someone we know. While most think of their “plus one” as their partner, there’s actually a variety of people who could be deemed your extra invitee. From your lover, mother, child or best friend, the list could go on. We spoke to Jools Purchase and Tess Alexander about who they choose (or don’t choose) as their plus one to take to the big events at this time of year. DECEMBER 2018

Jools Purchase “My events are scattered throughout the year, but we do have a heavier load at this time of year with Christmas parties. My daughter Veiya is my co-pilot and I usually take her to these events. I choose to take her because #singlemumlife and because she’s my homie. We do absolutely everything together. “While we don’t have a favourite event we attend, we love spending days shooting with Jericho Road and Poetry by Kasey and Renee. Veiya normally finds the grazing table and a friend and off she goes. “We are both outgoing people, so are generally the clowns of the party. I love watching her interact with people – she’s been coming everywhere with me since the day she was born so we make a great team and love each other’s company.”

“SHE’S been coming everywhere with me since the day she was born so WE MAKE A GREAT TEAM.”

Tess Alexander “Coming into the festive season it’s definitely a busier period. I find this mainly because all the clients I have worked with throughout the year have their respective ‘end of year’ functions and celebrations. So whether I’ll be working, representing the company or simply a guest, there is no shortage of events in December. “Depending on the circumstances, I often don’t take a plus one and attend these events alone. If I am emcee’ing or have specific requirements throughout the event, I will generally go by myself. It more comes from not wanting to leave my guest alone while I am fulfilling my role. If it is a more casual event, where I am just a guest, it’s always nice to share the experience with someone. “After I won Miss World Australia, I remember having to attend so many events by myself - I would get so nervous! Walking into a crowd of people and not knowing anyone is always daunting, no matter the circumstances. The more comfortable I became with ‘just talking’ to people at events, the more I realised we are all the same; people are people. This was a really valuable lesson in settling my own insecurities.”

“I often don’t take a PLUS ONE and attend events alone.”

SOUTH BANK PARKLANDS

s December sneaks up on us and the most anticipated day of the year gets closer and closer, our beautiful city is starting to come alive with the spirit of Christmas. From carols on the banks of the Brisbane River, beautiful displays and a hint of magic in the air, it’s no wonder Brisbane turns into the place to be at this time of year. With a huge line-up of Christmas festivities about to kick start, the city of Brisbane turns into a Christmas wonderland for the whole family to enjoy. Plus, if you’re anything like the Kahu family, you’ll love getting outdoors and in touch with nature! And what better way to do that than to spend the day creating lifelong memories and exploring everything that our beautiful city has to offer. It’s set to be the most spectacular December so far with South Bank Parklands, Roma Street Parkland and the CBD filled with plenty of fun and magic planned for kids and adults alike. The festive celebrations will be in full swing at South Bank Parklands with Carols by Twilight, a Christmas Cinema along the waterfront at River Quay, a Christmas gift market, Holly Jolly Kids acrobatic activities, an Elf Academy, ornament making, dance classes with the Queensland Ballet, and a fireworks display along the Clem Jones Promenade. The magic of Christmas will also be well and truly alive at Roma Street Parkland as it transforms into a mesmerising wonderland with The Enchanted Garden popping up among several areas of the Parkland. With light displays, food trucks and live music, it’s a must-do for the whole family this December. Finally, the CBD will be filled with plenty of whimsy and wonder with an entertaining Christmas parade where dancers, singers, acrobats and Santa himself will make their way through Queen St Mall. Plus, the Gold Lotto City Hall Lights, will also be back for another year, projecting a beautiful light display onto City Hall in King George Square. A magical destination for the whole family, Christmas in the CBD is for all ages, and expected to be the most spectacular it’s ever been. Round up your family and friends, and bask in the magic this time of year brings. There really is a little bit of Christmas magic everywhere you look in Brisbane. CHRISTMASINBRISBANE.COM.AU

TEAM KAHU Jordan Kahu and Jess Kent are high school sweethearts and it shows in their endearing appreciation, respect and affection for each other. Jordan, the resolute Brisbane Broncos player fuelled by a steely determination to succeed and Jess, the driving force behind the family, who exudes a level of gracefulness and sincerity that most of us only hope to achieve. But, the Kahu’s are bucking the stereotypical ‘athlete’ trend. Both Jordan and Jess are creative types – always looking for unexpected beauty in everything they do. Whether this be through Jordan’s creative outlet of Youtube and writing, or Jess’s exquisite fashion sense and eye for detail, it’s safe to say the pair are a creative powerhouse. And they’re only on the way up. One thing they both share? An exceptional eye for capturing beautiful photos. A relatively easy task when the subject of their pictures are often their beautiful children, Jayla (3) and Jude (2). The Kahu family have had a sneak peek of what’s to come throughout Brisbane this Christmas and it has their firm tick of approval! To them, there’s nothing more special than spending time with family, capturing treasured moments to last a lifetime – all of which can be done at the special events at South Bank Parklands, Roma Street Parkland and the CBD. Keep your eyes on the Kahu’s – big things are coming.

W

hen an exquisite designer meets a statuesque beauty, there’s something about the collision that’s truly magnificent. And it’s this timeless pairing between luxury brand Dior and the stunning Jess Kent, that embodies classic and elegant dressing. Opening early December, the gorgeous new Christian Dior boutique in QueensPlaza will offer Queensland shoppers the complete Dior universe for the first time ever. The boutique will be one of just a handful to showcase the capsule collection of beach-themed accessories such as totes, swimwear and textiles that are perfect for the Queensland summer. Summer Delight Stokehouse group pastry chef Lauren Eldridge shares her newest dessert creation, perfect for a warm afternoon on Christmas day. COCONUT RICE PUDDING WITH MACADAMIA AND MANGO Ingredients 170g arborio rice 170g water 400mL coconut milk 400g coconut cream 1 vanilla bean

3g table salt 250g cream 100g caster sugar 75g macadamias

Ingredients

STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

2 large mangoes 150g water 125g caster sugar

1 lime, juiced 20g rum (optional)

Method Peel and cut the mango into cubes. Freeze overnight. Over a low heat, dissolve the caster sugar into the water but do not boil. Leave to cool. Once the syrup is cool, place the mango, sugar syrup, lime juice and rum (if using) into a food processor and blend until smooth. If it is not blending easily, add a dash more water to loosen the mix. Churn in an ice cream maker following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Combine the rice and water in a large saucepan. Bring to a low simmer, stirring every few minutes until the water has been absorbed. Add the coconut milk, coconut cream, scraped vanilla bean and salt. Continue cooking on a low simmer until the rice has softened, adding a little bit more coconut milk if necessary. Stir occasionally to avoid the rice sticking to the bottom of the pan. Transfer the cooked rice to a bowl. Place cling film directly onto the surface of the rice to avoid a skin forming. Leave to cool completely, preferably overnight. While the rice is cooling, preheat the oven to 150°C. Lightly spray the macadamias with a canola oil spray and sprinkle with salt. Roast for 10 minutes. Leave to cool before chopping into small pieces. The day of serving, whip the cream and caster sugar together until medium peaks. Loosen the cooked rice in the bowl, adding a splash of coconut milk or cream if necessary. Remove the vanilla bean and fold in the chopped macadamias. Fold in the whipped cream. Serve with freshly cut mango and a scoop of mango sorbet.

Organise your end of year check up

Playing the age gap game

Exploring your core values

When you’re organising your end of year todo list, don’t forget to add ‘dental wellness visit’ to the very top. With holidays fast approaching, having a tooth ache or a gum infection during your well-deserved break won’t be much fun. Like your car, your mouth and teeth need regular, professional maintenance to be more reliable and work efficiently. Your regular dental checks involve much more than just looking for dental decay and gum disease. They’re a great opportunity for your dentist to perform an oral cancer check, screen for sleep breathing issues, assess your jaw development and oral function, and discuss head, neck and jaw pain you may be experiencing. It’s also a great time of year to ensure you maximise your health fund and your remaining dental limits for 2018, perhaps giving yourself the best present this Christmas – a dental wellness check.

There is nothing worse after the birth of your baby than the question, “When are you going to have another?” Spacing babies correctly is important, and many families don’t know how much of a gap between babies is best. Research shows there are some risks associated with interpregnancy intervals of less than 18 months. However, similar risks can occur when the interpregnancy interval is greater than five years. Clinically, much of the focus is often centred around age and fertility, however considerations such as complications of the prior pregnancy and previous delivery mode will also influence the appropriate advice. From a research perspective, an interval of anywhere between 18 months and five years is suggested, although there are important medical, emotional, and social considerations to be judged prior to making this important decision.

If you stay close to your values while working towards your goals, they will provide a compass for life’s journey. By constantly examining your values, you can always ensure that they are your end values, and not means to an end. An easy way to see what’s important to you, is to imagine you are 100 years old and looking back at your life. Ask yourself a few questions. What have you done that has made you happy? What have you done that has defined you as a person? What have you spent too much time worrying about? What have you not spent enough time on? Is there anything that you would do differently? Ask yourself whether your values are true, bone deep beliefs, or if there are some that are external “shoulds.” We often don’t recognise that conditioning sometimes leaves us with other people’s values. Remember, if you don’t know which port you’re sailing to, no wind is fair.

It’s time to kick up your heels

Put a stop to excessive sweating

Say goodbye to black fillings

During the party season, heels become the go-to shoes for many women. But after all the soirées, your favourite pair of high heels can become your arch nemesis. Normal walking motion coordinates the foot and calf pump, contracting calf muscles and propelling blood through the deep veins. However, high heels change the natural walking motion, shifting the weight to the forefoot and causing the calf muscles to remain contracted. This decreases the correct flow of blood and creates venous pooling. This doesn’t mean you have to stop wearing high heels altogether. Try to make an effort to stretch your muscles, mix up your footwear and give your legs a break every so often. By going for a 30 minute walk each day, your calf muscles can pump blood back up your legs. If you have any concerns, make your New Year’s resolution to get your veins checked.

Most of us only perspire in large amounts when we’re in hot weather, when we exercise or when we’re nervous. But for some, sweating goes beyond the normal level, resulting in stained clothing and a strong body odour. Idiopathic hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, has no known cause, even though it effects three percent of the population. There are several treatment options available, including over-thecounter antiperspirants, prescription medications and botox, however a new system from the US has been developed to help reduce excessive sweating. Now available at Westside Dermatology, miraDry technology uses electromagnetic or microwave energy to permanently reduce sweating glands. The procedure takes up to 30 minutes per underarm, destroying the glands so they no longer produce sweat.

Fillings are a normal part of the dental process for many people, but can often be dreaded due to their dark colour and visibility. Composite resin negates this problem, and has become a great modern alternative to the old and unsightly, black amalgam fillings. Composite resin is a white filling material that is bonded directly to the tooth, before being matched seamlessly with the shade of your natural tooth. Composite resin fillings replace the need to use the obvious black amalgam, and ensures that when you have your fillings placed, they don’t stand out unnecessarily when you smile or talk. You can feel completely confident with your teeth once again, never having to worry about your fillings being seen. If you are tired of your black fillings, you can talk to your dentist about different options to replace them, with either composite resin or white filling material.

Is brow tattooing for you? Enhance your natural brows and slash time from your makeup routine with Brazilian Beauty. While applying makeup in the morning is often something many women look forward to, meticulously applying eyebrow makeup can be a dreaded part of the process. Cosmetic eyebrow tattooing can take the stress out of getting ready each morning, as it enhances the natural shape and colour of your eyebrow, creating the illusion of a fuller and more defined brow. Using individual hair-like strokes, the experienced technicians at Brazilian Beauty use a fine microblade tool to pass over the area with pigment and subtly alter your eyebrows. Anaesthetic is also applied to the area to make sure you stay comfortable

throughout the procedure. Cosmetic eyebrow tattooing is suitable for those with fair hair or those who have sparse hairs or gaps in their brows, and lasts between 12 and 24 months. While it is long lasting, the treatment is semi-permanent, meaning you can still adapt to changing styles and trends. The highly skilled senior therapists at Brazilian Beauty will thoroughly assess whether this treatment is appropriate for you, and determine what shape and colour will best suit your face. In order to achieve the ‘perfect’ brow, you will need two sessions; the first to focus on your desired shape and pigment colour, and the second to retouch your brows

Have this treatment in December and choose from a free treatment from the Brazilian Beauty Christmas stocking: • Dermal pen hair rejuvenation • Dermal pen face • Henna brows • ASI results facial • Spray tan to ensure the shade and shape are perfect. Feel more confident without makeup and know your eyebrows are always perfect with cosmetic eyebrow tattooing from Brazilian Beauty. BRAZILIAN BEAUTY 13/104 NEWMARKET RD, WINDSOR P 3357 4081

The ultimate gift With Christmas upon us, founder of Brooklyn Beauty Bar Brooke Jesberg talks about gift giving made easy. Almost every business offers gift vouchers – what’s different about one from Brooklyn Beauty Bar? We are yet to find a woman who doesn’t love a little bit (or a lot) of pampering, or as some of our clients call it - maintenance. When the recipient redeems their gift voucher, we make them feel special and make sure they get the very best out of our amazing service. We offer such a wide range of services, from a full hair salon and nail technicians, to lashes, facials, tans and a full bar for cocktails. Who are the main gift givers of your vouchers? Mostly men under the direct orders PAGE 52

or strong hints from their partner, however lots of businesses give them out as corporate gifts or to staff as an end of year reward. Many women also purchase them for their friends and then book in for treatments together throughout the year. Last Christmas, we had one woman buy a year’s worth of beauty in a voucher for her daughter and herself, and they came in every month together for manicures as a way for them to spend some much needed quality time together. What’s been your favourite gift so far? One lovely man gave his wife a year’s worth of manicures and pedicures together with a year’s

worth of lunches at 12 nearby restaurants, and a plus one – so each month she’d come in and treat a friend, her sister or her Mum to pampering and lunch. She said it felt like Christmas every month. STYLING TIPS with Mark Ferguson

Clarity and Certainty

Elegance is beauty that never fades

What to wear to the Christmas party

When business owners reach a certain level of success, they often require further help to move forward onto the next level. This is due to a lack of focus or a struggle to get clarity and certainty on the future. When we achieve the goals we set, we often begin to worry about where we will be after the final project is finished. Because of this, we stop to set goals and lose sight of the future and the plans we have. Two things came to mind when considering how to solve this all too familiar situation. The first is to find a stronger connection with your purpose so you can find that lifelong direction. The second, is to find bigger goals congruent with your purpose that will take longer to achieve and then break these down into smaller, more achievable projects. Find your purpose and embed your goals in your deeper (unconscious) mind. The focus, clarity and certainty will natural follow.

While many of us get giddy with excitement at the thought of a shopping spree, a trip to the changing rooms can often leave us feeling defeated, unhappy and disappointed. But, if you know where to shop and what works best on you, this unwanted experience will almost never happen again. Fashion is best served like a fine dining experience – quality over quantity. This doesn’t mean fine fabrics, lavish embroidery, or saturated sparkles, but finding pieces that make you feel like you’re worth a million dollars. Knowing your style and using fashion to show who you are will give you something many women are searching for – elegance. It’s about knowing yourself and displaying that, and showing people that you are completely comfortable in your own skin. Invest in educating yourself and discover your style, claim your elegance and change your world.

This time of year brings the difficult decision making process of what to wear to the office Christmas party. If it’s straight after work then it’s most likely going to be easy, but if it happens to be a dinner or a lunch on a weekend, what should you wear? It’s important to keep your image consistent, so try to blend your office style into something more formal. A suit, collared shirt, tie, and pocket hank would work best. Another thing to consider is the level of formality required at the venue you are heading to. It is generally best to match the level of formality, and always overdress and then disrobe if you need to. Perhaps opt for darker sports jacket, dress trousers or dark cotton chinos, an open neck shirt, a pocket hank and a black or oxblood shoe. Your personal style generally requires more decision making than your everyday office style, so take some time to plan out what you’re going to wear.

INVESTMENT ADVICE with Emmet Ryan

COFFEE MASTERCLASS with Penny Wolff

RELATIONSHIP ADVICE with Paul Baker

Is the stock market like a game of Jenga?

Do you want to be a barista?

The significance of relationship rituals

Blackrock, the world’s largest investment manager, recently described Global stock markets as being like the late stages of a game of Jenga, suggesting that investors need to “play cautiously.” This view considers the transitionary period experienced by markets. As Central Banks, led by the US Fed, normalise monetary policy by raising interest rates, the ultimate effect on stock prices will be unknown, other than a rise in market volatility. For investors and self-funded retirees not wishing to see their retirement assets fluctuate greatly in value, we are adding protection to portfolios. The ability to “insure” a portfolio and protect retirement incomes can be achieved by employing simple risk management strategies. Authorised Representative No. 1005264 of Hunter Green Pty Ltd AFSL No. 225962. The above advice does not take into account your objectives, financial situation or needs so you should consider whether it is appropriate for you before acting on it.

Getting a foot in the door for a barista job you’ve always wanted can often seem impossible, especially when experience and knowledge is almost always a prerequisite to a role in a cafe. Wolff College of Coffee is excited to be introducing a six week “Young Gun Barista Course,” aimed at closing that gap to give school-aged participants the skills to hit the ground running. All enrolled “Young Gun Baristas” have the opportunity to engage in the vortex of Specialty Coffee through a series of sessions, with the first starting on 26 February 2019. At the end of each six week course, participant baristas will then have the opportunity to take part in a real two hour ‘work experience’ shift on the Big Bad Wolff Espresso Bar in Hendra. The clincher is, in order to apply for the shift and work on the bar with all our pro baristas, participants MUST have attended and completed each session in the series.

Being in a long-term committed relationship changes you, often through the many compromises and agreements you make, as well as the rituals you create together. Have you considered purposely creating these rituals to share with your loved ones? The easiest time to start is now, as we come into Christmas. You can create a significant and lasting ritual by simply unpacking and dressing the tree together. Set a morning or afternoon aside, play soft music and spend some time putting it up. You are not only building shared meaning, but storing memories. Creating shared meaning is the glue to a successful relationship. Being intentional and making them together, is the key. The process can be messy, awesome, risky, fun and satisfying all at the same time, but ultimately very rewarding, so give it a try this Christmas.

HABITAT— BEN, NOAH, HARPER, AND ASH KEILY

Welcome to Wonderland

We chat to the beautiful Mum, Ash Keily, behind one of the most innovative small businesses in Brisbane.

Tell us about your everyday life: Every day is different for us. There’s so much going on behind the scenes so no day is ever the same. The one thing that’s always the same is coffee... lots of coffee! How do you incorporate Arc & Family into your daily life? It’s definitely a juggle that I’ve learnt to do well, but some days it’s harder to get everything done – especially now the kids are older. We paint every day/night in our home studio, which is perfect with kids as we can work into the night! We started our business and family from home, so it’s normal to us now. As a mum, business owner and wife, how do you take time out just for you? It’s hard, but I have recently been taking some time for myself by getting my nails done in the afternoon before picking up the kids. I feel like that little bit of me time helps me unwind and gives me a bit more energy. Even just 30 minutes to sit and be on my own is so nice! Do you have a mantra you live by? I’m a go getter – if I want to do something, I just do it! If you want something in life you have to make it happen. Do you have a way of keeping on top of things or does it come naturally to you? I don’t think I have everything on track all on my own. I definitely think we are a team at home, so we all help out and keep things in check. Any tips for families wanting to start their own business? If you are happy, have support around you and that’s what you want to do, then give it a go! If you have that drive and are determined to succeed then nothing can stop you. What do you love most about living this life? I love how creative and different our lives are from the norm. There is never a dull moment at the store, El’rosa or at home that’s for sure! Opening our James Street store and then launching El’rosa has definitely been my favourite milestone so far. Watching something that you have designed and made yourself come to life is so special and I won’t ever forget that! Completely planned from start to finish, your outback concierge will guide you through the entire trip, starting you off at breakfast and taking you through the entire day till dinner, or even a cheeky nightcap. Your days start early, leaving your 4.5 star hotel to head to breakfast at the Historic Railway café or Rosebank Station, before heading into town for a knowledge enriching experience. Explore either the Qantas Founders Museum, or the Stockman’s Hall of Fame, both full of intriguing features, displays, and exhibitions, before settling down for an STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

afternoon in your hotel. In the evening, enjoy dinner at Camden Park Station under the stars, listening to the sound of absolutely nothing or head for a night of non-stop entertainment at Smithy’s Outback Dinner & Show, before heading to the Wellshot Hotel for a nightcap. If you have some spare time, enjoy a leisurely walk through the town centre, take an exhilarating helicopter ride over the beautiful town or enjoy a river cruise along the Thompson River while viewing the stunning sunset. While there is a number of things to do in Longreach, what sets it apart from your regular weekend destination is the community spirit that exudes from the locals. They’re doing it tough, struggling to get through a monstrous drought, but still have smiles on their face as you walk down the street. You’ll leave your trip feeling inspired and uplifted by the stories of local farmers who are battling with their beloved land and taking each day as it comes. They’re a community planting seeds for the future, hoping and praying that the rain comes to allow it to grow. PAGE 59
