f there were a way to totally embody the end of 2019, it would be bright, cheeky (in all the best ways) and with tonnes of tinsel – everything our cover has on show. In the spirit of fun, and this time of year, there’s a new adult playground to get around. Toombul Shopping Centre has turned it up a notch with their latest and not to mention flashiest addition – UPSTAIRS at Toombul. Leave the kids at home and have some fun of your own at Archie Brothers Cirque Electriq and unleash your inner child. If there’s ever a time to do so, it’s definitely December. Before we head into the roaring 2020s (hello New Year’s Eve events page 50) and get stuck into the new decade, it’s always nice to cheers to what was. On a professional note, I am grateful for how far our team have come and how we’ve showcased the core of our city by shining a spotlight on Brisbane’s best. Look at our foodie scene and how far it’s come with so much more heat in the belly! (starting on page 47). Which, of course, peaks at Christmas as friends and families gather around the table. While on that, there’s more inspiration for a happy holiday in this issue (get stuck into it on page 54) than Michael Bublé could sing about. On behalf of the Style team, thank you to our clients, partners and most of all, our readers – not just during the last year, but the last ten, too. Have a safe and happy Christmas and see you on the other side. @styletracy

A Palm Springs lifestyle WITH A SOPHISTICATED EDGE Why you’ll want to move to this inner-city oasis.

W

elcome to a modernised oasis where luxury meets functionality. Where you can arrive home to an essence of mid-century Palm Springs without leaving the hum of the Brisbane city centre. Architecturally designed with exclusivity and sophistication at the foundation of the concept, this is Cornelia Edition, Azure’s latest luxury collection of 31 oversized terrace homes in Cannon Hill. Influenced by the work of photographer Slim Aarons, Cornelia Edition has recreated the idyllic escape and luxury surroundings Palm Springs has always been known for; innovative finishes, parkland backdrops and reinvigorated interior designs. Experience the height of classical modernity and opulence in the fully gated community boasting a communal pavilion with a striking fireplace, outdoor lounge and leisure area, yet it’s the resort-style pool that’s a realistic mirage. From here, enjoy a lifestyle of entertaining and unwinding, synonymous with each other. With a selection of terraces overlooking golf course greens, the three and four bedroom homes feature expansive, openplan living spaces with sleek and elegant 10

touches. With every component considered, each residence creates a homely ambience with strategic lighting, premium fixtures and high-end appliances. Yet, it’s the designed overall aesthetic and interior touches that truly impresses. Expansive floor to ceiling glass windows and doors frame the spacious living areas as warm timbers, contours of stones, metals and bold statement pieces catch the eye and float through the space. The floor to ceiling storage, wine fridge and natural stone island bench top in the kitchen makes an ideal setting for entertaining, positioned overlooking the outdoor terrace. Bathrooms are spacious and feature custom-designed vanity, timber cabinetry, a free-standing bath and a selection of premium

finishes, making it less of a bathroom and more of a retreat. Take a quick flight upstairs and immerse yourself in homely comforts. Each secluded bedroom boasts different features within themselves from walk-in-robes to ensuite access and shared living spaces, with views as the epitome of the upper level. This is where the calm of the desert you would find in Palm Springs, hits home. Cornelia Editions has been created with twenty-twenty vision, distinctive in form and influential in style, ready to welcome you home in 2020. Louder than

the law

At 27, women’s rights activist, author, writer and speaker, Bri Lee, made her mark when her debut memoir Eggshell Skull was published in May 2018. Along with that came Queensland’s sexual consent law to change.

STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

@STYLEMAGAZINES

S

he’s a generation’s gutsy and ambitious voice who explored sexism in the legal system alongside her own personal journey of justice. As a Judge’s Associate at the Queensland District Court, Bri started her career working with sexual assault cases which soon empowered her to acknowledge her own childhood trauma and write a book that found her changing the lives of those who are victims of sexual assault in Queensland. She is a public face for survivors of sexual assault and a voice for those who have been unable to speak up. Now, Bri is exploring another powerful experience: beauty. Exploring society’s obsession with thinness, Bri asks how the unattainable standard of perfection has become so crucial to so many.

One of the most poignant parts of your own journey was writing Eggshell Skull whilst going through your own court case — how did you manage the two whilst going through such a difficult time? I found writing it all out helped me process what was happening. Sitting in court hearing my own matter discussed as though I wasn’t there was sometimes really gutting – taking notes throughout helped me try to be calm and rational throughout. I also knew I had an avenue through which I could actually be heard and respected, which is a feeling survivors don’t often get in our current legal process.

Hi Bri, what are you up to right now? Touring my new book, Beauty, and writing every single day. I have to stay focused on the work that comes next otherwise I spend a lot of time sitting around ruminating on past mistakes or waiting for reviews. I’m finishing my Master of Philosophy with another essay and am deep in research for a novel.

You have just released your new book, Beauty, what was the motivation behind writing this? It’s something I’ve always struggled with – both on a practical level with regards to my own attitudes and behaviours, but also from a philosophical perspective. Why do we think some bodies are worth more than others? What do our priorities tell us about how we think of gender, class, and race? And how do our behaviours communicate our values to the people around us – how are we all complicit? It’s a huge topic I knew no single person could ever cover comprehensively; I just hope I’ve been able to make some kind of small contribution.

How has releasing your book Eggshell Skull impacted your life so far? It has completely changed my life. I knew it was a big risk to quit law, and now I have a really strong foundation in a career I genuinely never thought was possible. Also, I couldn’t have fought so hard for the Queensland Law Reform Commission (QLRC) referral without the platform Eggshell Skull gave me. I turned the worst thing that ever happened to me into the thing of which I’m most proud. Could you explain where the title of Eggshell Skull stems from? It’s a legal maxim that means a defendant must “take their victim as they find them”. If a single punch kills someone because of their thin skull, that victim’s weakness cannot mitigate the seriousness of the crime. As a concept it fascinated me, but as I decided to pursue my own matter through the system I wondered if it would be possible to turn it on its head – could you be a strong and supported and determined “victim” that made the defendant regret choosing you?

What are you most proud of? Honestly, more than awards, the emails and letters I get from Eggshell Skull readers are the most meaningful thing. I have hundreds, maybe thousands now. Many people write to me with specific examples of how they’ve changed their lives after reading my book – told someone about something that happened to them, gone to the police, or contributed to advocacy where they are. I cry all the time when I read them. This, and the QLRC referral, are the things of which I am most proud.

LET’S GET TO KNOW BRI A LITTLE BETTER SHALL WE… What are some of your favourite places to visit when in Brisbane? I come home to visit family and do events all the time! West End and Avid Reader bookstore, absolutely. Where would we find you at a party? The food table!

I TURNED THE WORST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED TO ME INTO THE THING OF WHICH I’M MOST PROUD.”

hen people ask where I grew up, it’s not a closed answer, I still am growing up. I’ve always known my ancestry and Wiradjuri culture but it was the paintings that really started it. I first painted a self-portrait at the age of six but was deterred from the non-belief and criticism from those around me. I didn’t touch a paintbrush until 42 years later and that’s when the flood gates opened. The inspiration comes from my ancestors. They show me their messages and I pass them on in the form of visuals. My favourite project to date has been my partner 20

FROM REFUGEE CAMP TO

THE RUNWAY

People say to wear your heart on your sleeve and for Salomon Lukonga, it’s taken on a new meaning.

W

eaved into his label, Salomon’s story begins in a Tanzanian refugee camp where he spent his childhood watching his parents struggle to ensure his family would see another day. Rather than letting this start in life define him, he used it to empower his future. “Looking back now, I think being born in a refugee camp is my superpower,” Salomon says. “I am so grateful for what I have and how far I’ve come, and it has taught me to see situations in someone else’s shoes.” As he grew up and moved to Australia at the age of 12, Salomon sought refuge in an

unlikely place – his love for fashion. “I fell in love with fashion in the library as I learnt how to sketch and found cooler versions of ordinary garments,” he says. Yet, the thought of his struggling homeland followed him and he wanted to help. Introducing, Mojalivin. Named after the Swahili word for “one”, the label Mojalivin is where Salomon the designer and Salomon the humanitarian meet. “The message is basically “living together as one for a better future,” Salomon says. “And for Mojalivin it means partnering with Auscongo to give 30% of our profits to provide medical aid in Congo.” Inspired by western trends and

African designs, the brand is bold in every collection. By using the knowledge he gained from his own modelling career, Salomon pulled together a fashion show for Mojalivin to roaring praise, which carried him through to this year’s Melbourne Fashion Week. The future looks bright for Salomon, who is currently rebranding. Mojalivin will run as an independent charity, while the label will carry on under SALOMON JANVIER. “With the right mindset and faith, Mojalivin has shown me dreams can turn to reality,” he says. The Grace of Rebellion Salvador earrings $68

Amori earrings $68

From a Balinese cacao ceremony to a James Street shop front, Zoe Mayne swapped the rag trade for a rebellion of her own and Rebellious Grace was born. This is how she did it, all within 12 months. Zoe, how did you get started in the industry? Specifically jewellery? It’s an amusing story really, at least to me. I’m a fashion designer by trade, and after working in clothing production for years, I realised I actually hated sewing. I visited a psychic who told me I would work in jewellery and I scoffed at her because at the time I didn’t wear any jewellery and only wore black! Fast forward three years, I’ve become quite passionate about jewellery as an avenue for self-expression, mostly because it’s an inclusive industry not limited by clothing size or body shapes. How did Rebellious Grace come to fruition? Last year I was on a kind of “spiritual journey” to find more meaning in my life and had a deep desire to find and connect with a like-minded community of people. I did the cliché spiritual trip to Bali and attended a cacao ceremony on a whim. There, I "heard" the words ‘Rebellious

Ceres pearl floral earrings $96

Grace’, and in the following months, those words fleshed out into a beautiful brand. So, you rolled with the name Rebellious Grace from there? I realised that the words simply translate as my design aesthetic. The more time I spend bringing the brand into its potential, I’m realising ‘Rebellious Grace’ can also translate as a lifestyle mindset too for women who want to live their own way, on their own terms. What’s your creative process? I work closely with manufacturers to ethically and sustainably create our high quality, hypoallergenic components, and then I design and assemble the jewellery in-store. Where do you draw your inspiration from? When I’m designing our ready-to-wear collections, I’m usually drawn to a texture or material first, and then work with shape DECEMBER 2019

and structure. The Bacchus collection was one of my favourites; I found some marble stone beads when travelling and have turned them into a collection inspired by ancient architecture and special things not forgotten. However, my inspiration varies a lot. In three words, how would you best describe Rebellious Grace? Inclusion, connection, community. What’s something people are most surprised to discover about the brand? That the shop fit-out (including concrete shelves and earring stands) were all made by me! ZA ZA!

Cared for curations and passionate preparation. This is a Brisbane experience, powerful on the people and the plate. WORDS BY GEORGIE MURRAY

I

f there were words like va-va-voom to describe a foodie experience, it would easily be ZA ZA TA. Having heard much about one of the latest additions to Fortitude Valley, I was unprepared and overly impressed with the exotic encounter. Enter a private paradise where the cultures of the Mediterranean and the Middle East meet with a colonial backdrop, moody hues and acute ambience. Like any good time, I started with a cocktail. The Hotel Tel Aviv with orange blossom Bombay gin, house made macadamia cardamom orgeat is both a refreshing drink and recipe based on Hotel Georgia from 1920s

Vancouver. Naturally, I washed this down with another cocktail, the Jaffa Juice, rightly named after the Jaffa Markets in Tel Aviv. Ask any ZA ZA TA staff member about the history behind each concoction for an entertaining and educating history trip to understand the core ethos behind the restaurant. Each plate embodies their stance on sustainability and authenticity. Land meets sea in the Fremantle octopus tentacle with harissa bisque and camel based Nduja. The potato and semolina pita paired with hummus soaked overnight in mushroom stock was the real (bread) winner for me but I would be amiss not to mention the Wagyu tongue ‘toastie’ DECEMBER 2019

and crispy roasted duck with liver paté. My body was telling me no but my mind, my mind was telling me yeaaaah to the dessert: a white chocolate, hazelnut and sesame plate of goodness. The dynamics between executive chef Roy Ner, head chef Dario Manca and food and beverage director Jared Thibault has produced something special, that Brisbane didn’t know it needed. A R T S & E N T E R TA I N M E N T

A quick sip with LIME CORDIALE From their summery new single to their laid-back melodies, brothers and band mates Oli and Louis from Sydney’s Northern Beaches are cranking up the feel-good tunes during their Australian tour. We sat down with the jovial duo ahead of their Woodford Folk Festival appearance. Where does the name Lime Cordiale come from? From our last name, Leimbach. We wrote our first song on holiday in France at a classical music festival called Musique Cordiale. When it comes to cordial, Bickford’s or Cottee’s? That Cottee’s stuff tastes so bloody good but Bickford’s gives the impression that it’s healthier. Doubt it. If you could cover any song what would it be? Choosing is so hard. We’ve just been through this with our Triple J “Like A Version”. It’s not easy choosing someone else’s song to play. We get sick of playing them so quick. Before “Touch Myself ”, we were playing “Rich Girl” by Hall & Oats. And there’s probably 10 other Hall & Oats bangers that’d be good to cover. I like songs with a solid groove. Maybe Fat Boy Slim should come next. Which song of yours holds the most meaning and why? Even the title of each song takes us to a different place. Often we think about where and when it was written. “What Is Growing Up” definitely sums up the vibe of our last album. I’d say that Louis’ choice of most meaningful song would be “Walk Over Everything I Do” seeing as it was very specific about his situation at the time. It’d be “Risky Love” for me. No one really feels the humour behind the song because the production is quite dark. It’s about the most alpha bloke that we know and what it would be like to sleep around with his girlfriend. 42

STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

What was it like recording the “Robbery” music video? How long did it take and what was the best memory? We filmed it over a large part of our European tour. Jack Shepherd came along with us to shoot it. We’d get up every morning and rush off to the most iconic landmark in each city. We were running on a few hours’ sleep every night. We used different females in each place…girls at the shows, family, friends and I even got in a dress for a few shots. If you could grow up in any era, which would it be? I enjoyed growing up without a mobile phone. iPhones only came to Australia after I left high school. Now it’s really taken over and you don’t even see kids on the street anymore. It’s kind of freaky. At least people are still seeing live music. Which has been your favourite music video to record? “Naturally” was definitely the most fun. But making out with our best mate Tommy was pretty rank - he intentionally ate a greasy burger and had a few ciggies before we got stuck into it. Being brothers, what movie best depicts your childhood? Anything with Jim Carey in it. We were obsessed with Ace Ventura and The Mask. So good. WOODFORD FOLK FESTIVAL 27 DEC – 1 JAN. LOVE

How did he propose? Molly: Isaac is such a romantic! He asked to meet me after work at our local beach lookout (Point Cartwright), that is also where his mum’s memorial is. He wanted to place flowers for his mum and watch the sunset together – which is nothing unusual for us. He then got down on one knee and popped the question. The photographer captured the whole thing, and our family was hidden in the bush watching too! Ceremony and reception venue? Yabbaloumba Retreat, Booloumba Describe the location and why you chose it... Isaac: To be honest, Molly’s mum found it before we had even looked at any other venues. When we heard there was a cancellation and available day for a booking (which happened to be Molly’s grandparent’s anniversary) we knew it was perfect and jumped on it. It’s relaxed, natural, has lush greenery and a beautiful canvas to work with. Favourite moment? Molly: It would have to be seeing Isaac standing at the alter - drenched and teary. The rumbling thunder is something I’ll never forget. Isaac: my favourite moment was when Molly said ‘I do’. Funniest moment? Right as our MC announced us back from our photos, Isaac said ‘wait a moment… I have to fart’ before we could walk in. Where did you honeymoon? Our honeymoon will be in Hawaii in December. We did spend a couple nights in Byron Bay after the wedding. 44

BITES

If it’s a new restaurant, bar or venue in Brisbane, you’ll see it here. DOGTAP BRISBANE Freshly brewed craft beer will flow on the banks of Murarrie when iconic Scottish brewery, BrewDog, makes their first foray down under. The four-vessel 25HL brewhouse, canning line and barrel-ageing facility will be serving up beers, brunch and bar snacks in a refreshing taproom dripping cool. @dogtapbrisbane

TETTO ROOFTOP BAR Sip your way to the Amalfi Coast as you laze under a striped umbrella and lose yourself amongst the bougainvillea. Everton Plaza’s latest addition boasts 300sqm of open-air space, private booths and reminisces the sun-soaked bars of coastal Italy for an escape just in time for summer. @tettorooftopbar

OCHE

BAJA Follow the SoCal breeze with a mezcal margarita in hand to bold flavours bundled in a fresh tortilla and finished with lashings of lime. At Baja, hard-to-find spices, the aroma of prime cuts grilling and charred, juicy and traditional plates come together to create life at ease.

Turn date night into dart night at Brisbane’s latest bullseye of a bar. Offering a modern take on the game, the share menus are thoughtfully created from local produce by former head chef of Gerard’s Bistro, Ben Williamson, and crafted to be eaten with one hand so you never miss a shot.

GRUMPY MADAM Serious espresso and serious eats are promised at this seriously delicious Newstead cafe. You won’t leave hangry after feasting on their simple menu of clean dishes made with wholefoods like their spiced pumpkin pie pancakes with housemade maple bacon ice cream. @grumpymadam 46

Fresh fusion WORDS BY FIONA WILLIAMS

Combining Latin flavours with local ingredients, Rico Bar & Dining is serving up a strong Spanish influence to savour this summer.

O

nce upon a time when I first moved to Brisbane back in 2010, I sat in this very space and dined with an unforgettable view of The Story Bridge. Almost 10 years later, I’m back at the same spot that’s replaced Aria Restaurant – riverside at Rico Bar and Dining. Still as much the iconic bend of Eagle Street Pier it’s always been known for, Rico sits new, on-fleck and overflowing with freshness on every plate. The brains behind the modern and glamorous dining destination is owner Michael Tassis, who’s no

stranger to the precinct with George’s Paragon and Massimo part of his culinary crusade. The menu offers plenty of small bites such as tapas, with a range of wholesome sharing options depending on your mood and or company. My first dish is the ceviche – as light and fresh as the current Brisbane weather favours – it’s presented as a moreish medley of kingfish, tuna and ocean trout and dressed with lime, chilli and fresh herbs. As I’m digging in and sipping on a fresh Rico Maria tomato cocktail, I notice the live oyster and ceviche bar, showing that seafood is front and centre of this mouth-watering menu. After the signature vinaigrette dressed oysters and the Moreton Bay bug rolls on a crisp and fluffy brioche bun, the standout pair of plates were undoubtedly the Argentinian style 1kg lamb shoulder (best for sharing) and the seafood DECEMBER 2019

paella with calamari, prawns, mussels and braised capsicum. With each bite it’s easy to feel as though I’ve been whisked away to an authentic spot on the other side of the world. But the food is just one part of the offerings. From the delicate touches of modern décor and tonal hues, to the natural light beaming through the exquisite high set windows, the casual Mediterranean feel of Rico gorgeously compliments each dish. Whether it’s after work drinks (I recommend the passionfruit, lime and cava Barcelona beverage) underneath the green and white umbrellas alfresco, a date night dinner onlooking the city lights or a long lunch shucking fresh oysters, this new addition to Eagle Street Pier is the place to unfold your next napkin. Hong Kong cookery Eat, laugh, drink and repeat at Stanley.

I

’m not a superstitious person by any means, but when I see number ones together - something just feels ‘right’. On the 1/11 opened Howard Smith Wharves’ latest dining addition, Stanley, and one step inside you’ll find the moody moments resembling that of its namesake, Stanley Bay in Hong Kong. A stroll past the east side of Greca, you’ll find the two-level Cantonese/Chinese style restaurant and bar accommodating up to 220 guests inside and 350 spilling outside. The fine details ooze an ode to Hong Kong throughout the delicate full wall paintings of Stanley Bay and the deep dark reds and greens throughout the interiors. Hosted by Stanley’s executive chef Louis Tikaram, we’re taken on

LOUIS TIKARAM

a journey of Cantonese style cooking but with an Australian twist. Fare is better shared, and that is how the Stanley team have designed their menu – to enjoy with friends or family with an extra serving of fun and laughter. Starting with the fresh platter of sashimi, next arrives Stanley’s signature steamed dim sum platter served along with the four-daysto-prepare Peking duck pancakes. While the duck is a must-try dish, the true winner of the menu is the lobster ‘Lo Mein’ and to cut

through the richness of the noodles, I sip on a wasabi inspired gin and cucumber cocktail. To finish, local baby pineapples filled with gelato, lime sugo and tropical granita end a blissfully refreshing riverside rendezvous. Skin secrets to know before you’re 30 We sat down with Sherril Dalitz, owner of The Brow and Skin Studio, who shared her expert tips on how to get a head start on great skin. Where does great skin start? The most common problem is constantly and randomly buying products that don’t suit your skin. Not only is this frustrating, it is also very costly. We try to educate our clients about the importance of ingredients in skin products. Unfortunately, not all ingredients are created equally and it is essential to know the difference. An exact skin analysis is key. We use the OBSERV 520 device, which gives us the information we need to treat skin correctly, effectively and to maximise results. What are the best products to use before you’re 30? A great cleanser, serum, hydrator and, of course, sunscreen. What is your biggest beauty hack? This is tried and true, and so obvious: always cleanse twice at night regardless if you’re wearing make-up or not. The difference this makes is amazing. What is one of the biggest misconceptions about great skin? That it has to be complicated. It doesn’t, it just needs to be effective, consistent, and tailored to your needs.

AVAILABLE

SHERRIL DALITZ

What skincare ingredients should you look out for in your 20s and in your 30s? Stabilised ingredients such as AHA’s are great for skin resurfacing and increase hydration. Vitamin A helps anti-ageing, fights pigmentation, acne and blemishes. Vitamin C needs to remain stable and is a brightening powerhouse to target pigmentation and increase sun protection, which is essential to skin health. Peptides add extra hydration, calms inflammation and treats Rosacea and blemishes. What is a simple and effective routine to keep? Cleanse AM and PM. Vitamin C in the morning, followed by broad spectrum sunscreen and then vitamin A nightly followed by night cream.

Feather Touch Brow With this highbrow beauty service, not a single hair will be out of place.

T

raditionally, to control your brows meant reaching for spoolies, brushes, powders, pencils and sprays. However, if you don’t have a tool kit on hand, Brazilian Beauty offers a solution to ensure your brows are tamed. Naturally enhance your eyebrows to be their best with Brazilian Beauty’s Feather Touch Brow. The technique uses a fine micro blade tool and pigment to create individual hair-like strokes that look exactly like the real thing.

With a feather-light touch, the therapists will create fuller-looking, natural brows that last between 12 and 24 months. Whether you want to subtly fill your brows or reshape them, the pigment is customised to match your skin tone and hair colour for a seamless look. You’ll never have a bad brow hair day again, and as the procedure is semi-permanent, you can keep up with the latest trends. The process

starts with a free consultation, so you and the therapist can see eye-to-eye on your brows and ends with a perfection visit four weeks after initial treatment. Convenience and comfort combine for a highbrow look that never goes astray! BRAZILIAN BEAUTY P 3357 4081 BRAZILIANBEAUTY.COM.AU

Beauty actually With Christmas upon us, founder and owner of Brooklyn Beauty Bar, Brooke Jesberg, talks about putting love into gift giving. Why do you think people love their gift of an experience at Brooklyn Beauty Bar so much? It’s such a versatile gift, the recipient can use the voucher when they want and for whatever they’d like. They can use it by themselves for some ‘me time’ or make an appointment with friends and make it a fun social event. We are yet to find a woman or man who doesn’t love a little bit (or a lot) of pampering. What can they use the voucher on? We offer such a wide range of services, from a full hair salon and nail technicians, to lashes, facials, tans, skin rejuvenation and exceptional products. Plus, of course, a full bar for cocktails. 62

Who are the main gift givers of your vouchers? Often it’s women buying for their friends, daughters, mothers, sisters – they know what women want. We also get a lot of men, mostly under instruction from their partners. And lots of corporates give our vouchers to their staff and clients. Has there been a ‘Love Actually’ Christmas gift moment so far? Oh yes, we had a beautiful lady buy a year’s STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

Beware of white pupils

Sort out snoring

Step into summer

A white pupil is an abnormal reflection of light from the eye, and almost always indicates a serious problem inside the eye. The commonest cause in children is a congenital cataract (clouding of the lens) which occurs in about 1 in 2,500 children. The most serious cause, although rarer, is a tumour in the eye called retinoblastoma. The eye and sometimes good vision can be saved if this is treated very early. If neglected, retinoblastoma will continue to grow in the eye and becomes life threatening if it spreads elsewhere. In early cases, when the tumour is small, the white reflection is sometimes only seen occasionally so if there is any suspicion of a white pupil, the child needs to be seen urgently by an ophthalmologist (eye specialist) so the correct diagnosis can be made. The white pupil can also be seen in normal children due to off axis flash photographs, but a thorough eye check is always needed to rule out other causes.

Is snoring a part of your life and coming between you and your partner? Every night, half of all Australian households are affected by disruptive snoring. Many couples who are affected by this decide to sleep in separate rooms – a necessary decision they arrive at reluctantly. But it doesn’t need to be this way and there are ways your dentist can help. Snoring can occur at any age and can affect almost anyone. Smoking, alcohol, pregnancy, and weight gain are significant contributors to the condition, as well as open mouth breathing, enlarged tonsils and deficient jaw development. Dentists who are appropriately trained to treat snoring and obstructive sleep apnea can assess the problem, instigate referrals and, where appropriate, manage the problem with an oral appliance worn during the night. Obstructive sleep apnea must be ruled out as part of this process. At James Street Dentists, we are highly educated and experienced in this area and can help you get the care you need.

Broadly speaking, patients at our practice can be divided into two groups. Those having medical treatments on their varicose veins and others with cosmetic treatments for their spider veins. Living in Brisbane, we are fortunate to have a climate which means we can wear shorts or skirts across the seasons. For those living with noticeable veins on their legs, their choice of clothing is limited as they can feel self-conscious about their appearance and choose to hide them under trousers or maxis. For others, they might not have issues with the look, but instead suffer from symptoms such as ache, swelling and restless leg. Regardless of which category they fall into, when patients have their final review, we often hear it said that they wished they had come in years ago! Being proactive about your venous health and booking a consultation can help avoid future skin damage, or give you the confidence to ditch the sarong this year at Noosa.

Gratitude attitude

‘Tis the season to be jolly, with parties and presents, rest and relaxation. In the fun and frivolities, it’s easy to go from one thing to another mindlessly. In doing so, we take things and people for granted, and fail to value how privileged we are. In this silly season, set aside time daily to list things you are thankful for. It may simply be access to health care, safe drinking water, or a roof over your head. On days when you are busy or stressed, review your list. Get in the habit of thanking people for what they do. Even expressing thanks to people doing small things makes a difference to them, you, and others. When people are negative or resentful, look for the best in them and see that as a sign they need compassion. Stay close to those who struggle. Helping them is not only the right thing to do, it has a domino effect in the world. When you start noticing more around you, gratitude will be enhanced, and you’ll see it become contagious!

For the past 18 months we have been creating suits for those women really wanting to wear Wil Valor. Over this time, we have seen a steady increase in interest and enquiries so we feel it is the right time to officially introduce Wil Valor Woman. Wil Valor Woman is a service which combines over 14 years of bespoke suiting experience, creative design and the world’s finest women’s suiting fabrics. While our focus is fit, our expertise also extends to colour and we can guide you to what suits you best for the most stylish result. We are quite flexible with style and design while mindful of showing our exquisite fabrics in their very best light. Every woman needs a black or midnight blue suit as their go to staple. We also pride ourselves on creating unique pieces, with a selection of unique fabrics and we are always on the lookout for the latest in fabric design and quality. We create suiting that will allow you to own the room in a moment.

Just like a magazine subscription, but world class coffee delivered straight to your door! Wolff Coffee Roasters has just launched a subscription model for the specialty coffee lovers out there. Never worry about running out of coffee again, with our set and forget delivery service. Not only do we have something for those who want to take matters into their own hands, we also have a gift subscription which would make the ultimate present to have either on your list or send someone special this Christmas. The subscription is super easy to set up and will make your life easier having one less thing to think about! You have the choice between the award-winning Big Dog House Blend or a rotation Single Origin. Simply decide how much caffeine you need (250g, 500g or 1kg), how often you need to be topped up (weekly, fortnightly or monthly) and lastly how you like your coffee (whole bean, espresso, stovetop, French press, pour over, AeroPress) and we will take care of the rest!

If you have ever suffered with skin disease you will appreciate how much impact it can have. Itching, redness and the embarrassment of visible skin diseases can have a major impact on daily life. Phototherapy can greatly improve the symptoms of many skin disorders including psoriasis, vitiligo, eczema and chronic itch. It can reduce the need for steroid creams and medications, is painless and suitable for younger and older patients. At Bulimba Dermatology, phototherapy is one of the most frequently prescribed treatments for our patients because it is effective, affordable and safe. Narrowband phototherapy uses a very special part of the ultraviolet light spectrum which has the lowest side-effect profile and most powerful anti-inflammatory properties of all phototherapy types. About 75% of patients treated will achieve significant improvement of their skin condition with reduction in visible signs including redness and itch. Many patients achieve complete reduction in their skin disease.

MR. INSIGHTFUL IS GETTING EXCESSIVELY DRUNK INHERENTLY BAD? I DON’T THINK SO. BUT OUR REASONING IS DEFINITELY A LITTLE OFF.”

I

n general, young people get excessively drunk as a form of escapism. An attempt to escape boredom, an attempt to quiet a mind that wants to be engaged. Those that get written off drunk each and every weekend do so because it allows them to hush their brain’s ambitions to be engaged in something meaningful. It is the easy option out in a society that lacks an intellectual culture and significant cultural history. With few opportunities for intelligent stimulation for young adults in Australia, getting excessively drunk on the weekend provides an opportunity to dull busy minds. It provides youngsters with an experience in the now, that is attached to one of the only cultural activities we have.

MS. CULTURAL CELEBRATION

C

oming from Greek heritage, red wine has always been a symbol of celebration. When it’s a birthday, we drink. If there’s a special event, we drink. We raise a glass in toast, honouring the moment and reflecting on what it means. It’s our Sunday beverage of choice, sharing a moment across the table to our health, ‘Stin ygeiá sas’. We’re all about celebrating the little things in life and appreciating what we’ve got in the moment and red wine is essential for ALCOHOL HAS that. Opa!

ALWAYS BEEN A PART OF MY UPBRINGING.”

MS. WORK IN PROGRESS

I

feel there is a lot of pressure to drink in Aussie culture. I think as a society we have I ALWAYS FEEL really normalised excessive drinking. I PRESSURED TO struggle with binge drinking myself, on a night out I find it incredibly hard to pace myself DRINK IN SOCIAL as the effects of alcohol hit me really quickly SITUATIONS.” and I always get carried away. I personally hate excessive drinking as I feel it has gotten me in some pretty hairy situations in the past, but yet I feel I can’t say no to it in a social setting. My way of dealing with this is either by avoiding alcohol altogether or drinking in safe environments around people I trust. Eventually, I would like to get to a point in my life where I never drink or enjoy just one glass of red wine with dinner like a European.

MS. PARTY ANIMAL

I

feel as though Australia has a very “drink to get drunk” culture. Generally, I like to have a few drinks to relax, be more confident and hold conversation easily. However, I do find it quite hard to stop after just a few drinks… when I drink it’s either 0 or 10, no real in-between. This year I did the whole Euro summer thing and when I’d introduce myself as an Australian, it would always warrant some sort of response like “you know how to party” or, “Australian’s are wild.” Look, they weren’t wrong… without a doubt we were always the last ones standing. And if I’m honest, that’s probably not a good thing.

MS. BEING LECTURED

M

y parents have often suggested I drink too much and every time (without fail) when I go out, my dad will text or call to say, ‘take it easy, don’t drink too much and stay tidy’. He worries a lot. I worried even more-so when my brother would go out drinking because it really can take only one punch; and being a boxer and a bit of an angry teen, I was always expecting a call to say he’d been hurt or locked-

DECEMBER 2019

up. I believe this angst comes from my dad enjoying one-too-many in a country town during his adolescence. There’s not a lot to do out there except drink and kick the footy and perhaps this has just intensified and evolved from generation to generation. I think Australians take drinking too far – look at Europe’s casual approach and mild intoxicated behaviours in comparison. It’s part of their culture, not a way to deal with their culture.

e’re in a VIP cabana at Omnia Dayclub – the hottest and most luxurious club in Bali, at the southern tip of Uluwatu. It’s a spectacular dance club with over three bars and three swimming pools, on a cliff, overlooking the ocean. It really is major! Our cabana has its own pool and is close to the DJ booth – the beats are dropping, the vibe is awesome and there are a lot of happy faces and nationalities from all over. It’s hot and I’m not just talking about the weather – scantily clad dancers in killer heels are on podiums; a French football team are being entertained by modelesque swimsuit-wearing hostesses (think Pammy-red cozzies) and one of my friends, Bec, is having a dance off with an Asian couple in the cabana opposite. And it’s daytime – who doesn’t love day drinking? But back to Bec… her and the Asian couple are attracting quite an audience. I sense that the couple are on their honeymoon – their moves are perfectly choreographed and well rehearsed, they’re wearing Chanel everything and they are hilarious. It’s a slightly different dance action to the evening before, when we were mesmerised by the cultural Kecak dancers. Performed by a troupe of over 60 dancers, this captivating and frenzied performance is held in an amphitheatre, overlooking the ocean.

BALI What do crazy rich Asians, DJ’s, sunset dancers and cheeky monkeys have in common? They’re just some of the surprising (and fun) sides of Bali, writes Tracy Sinclair.

IT’S THE MOST SPIRITUAL AND DREAMY SETTING – THE OCEAN IS BOTH POWERFUL AND SOOTHING.”

VIP CABANAS AT OMNIA DAYCLUB

SUNSET AT ULUWATU

KECAK PERFORMANCE IMAGE: IBITSEM BEN NASSIB

Tip: get there early to nab a sunset-facing seat. I slipped out of the performance to capture photos of the sunset without the crowds. It’s the most spiritual and dreamy setting – the ocean is both powerful and soothing, and everyone should experience it. After the performance, families of monkeys followed us as we walked to our transport. They’re super cute but pretty brazen. If you’re not careful, the cheeky devils will steal sunglasses and mobile phones right out of the hands and pockets of unsuspecting tourists. But it’s no problem – rangers are on hand to help you get your gear back. If the attractions and beaches of South Bali are on your list, Wyndham Dreamland Resort is perfectly located. As the name suggests, close to Dreamland Beach (five minute walk), it’s in a peaceful and secluded part of Pecatu, near Bingin and Padang Padang surfbreaks. This tropical retreat is modern with spacious rooms, three swimming pools, a full-service spa, and wellness centre with a yoga studio (yoga every day!). The food is world class with several dining options. The resort can also arrange a culinary experience where talented chefs will both entertain and teach you how to cook local dishes including my favourite Sate Lilit Ayam – a minced chicken ‘lollypop’ with Bambu Bali (spicy paste of galangal, ginger, turmeric, lemongrass, garlic and more). It’s a lot of fun especially the food styling competition where you plate up your creations for the chefs to judge. For the record our team did win – booyah! Competitive much? Whether you want to get down and bust a move, be entertained by dancers or let your tastebuds dance with happiness, Bali is always surprising and provides the dreamiest of settings for whatever your kind of fun.
