EDITOR’S NOTE
Oh-so shiny and new!
Okay, I’ll just start with ‘you’re welcome’. Yes, you’re welcome to pages of sartorial goodness and glam. Picture carefully curated head-to-toe outfits for every occasion – from brunching through Brisbane to rooftop celebrations with your New Year’s Eve crew. We’ve done the heavy lifting, so all you have to do is add your faves to your shopping list (or perhaps drop some not-so-subtle hints!).
And where better to start picking out your festive ‘fits than the city – Queen Street Mall to be precise. The Style crew hit Brisbane’s CBD for our late-night cover shoot to bring you everything sparkly, shiny, and new. It may have been an 11pm finish, but we’re so thrilled with the result – a collection of head-turning looks that are as dazzling as the Story Bridge at night.
And while we’re talking festivities, our theme for this month is Goodwill and Giving – we share how you can give back to your community, and we chat to homegrown heroes who embody this sentiment. We’re also delighted to feature the dynamic John Lazarou – who has contributed so much to Brisbane in the last 30-plus years.
So, all we need to do now before we sign off for 2022 is wish everyone a safe and happy festive season. Whether you’re working, chilling, or partying, we hope you’re with the people you love most. And in the spirit of giving this season, perhaps do something nice for your neighbour or plan a thoughtful gesture for someone who deserves to be celebrated.
Enjoy!

John Lazarou
John Lazarou’s passion for people, life, and family is unmatched. Widely known as ‘the Greek-Australian king of coffee’, John is one of three behind the success of The Coffee Club, Australia’s largest homegrown café group.
However, surprisingly he hasn’t always worked in the hospitality industry. John worked as a hairdresser from the age of 15 to 27, owning his own hair salon in West End, before making the change.
During that time, he dabbled in the hospitality industry working on and off for a number of leading hospitality legends, including the late Michael Gambaro of Gambaro Group, who he says inspired him to pursue a full-time
career in the industry. He later joined forces with The Coffee Club’s Founders Emmanuel Kokoris, and Emmanuel Drivas, and he’s never looked back. John worked his way up from duty manager to public relations and marketing manager, to now director. While his career changed, one thing stayed the same: his passion for people.
“I’m fortunate enough to have had two amazing careers so far – I say so far because is this my last career?”
When asked how it feels to have such an iconic reputation in Brisbane, John says, “It feels great, but with that comes a big responsibility. I feel privileged to have been able to work with and train thousands of young hospitality
employees over the years.”
While John’s passion for people has driven his successful career, he’s also been equally driven in his philanthropic work. “If I can assist in a small way, I will,” he says. “I’m thoroughly enjoying working with the Children’s Hospital Foundation and have done so for the past 25 years. We are currently exploring new and exciting options to assist with their fundraising needs.”
And with the end of year in sight, John is looking forward to winding down and spending quality time with his family. “We have four children and six grandchildren,” he says. “If it’s a nice day, I love it when our grandkids are over playing in the pool and being loud.”

Shop ‘til you drop
Left your Christmas party ‘fit to the last minute? In the mood to treat yourself and your loved ones? Queen Street Mall is the perfect place to get your shop on. Did you know it boasts Queensland’s largest selection of national and international designer fashion brands in one location?
Start your shopping spree at QueensPlaza and browse its five-storey David Jones flagship store before cruising through a sea of designer retailers like Balenciaga, Fendi, Louis Vuitton, and Chanel. And, if you’re looking for a gift to spoil a special someone, a trip down to Brisbane Arcade will not disappoint. Enjoy a staycation
Instead of taking a trip up or down the coast this holiday season, why not enjoy a staycation in our beautiful city instead? Immerse yourself in the magic

The fun doesn’t stop there! Y E S SIR.
A stroll down James Street just got a little easier on the eyes, thanks to the addition of SIR.
By ASTRID TAEMETS
22 | STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU @STYLEMAGAZINES
ASIR. girl is an unmistakable being. Effortlessly polished, she exudes the attitude of a woman chasing an eternal summer – always in holiday mode, always ready to take off on another exotic vacation. She’s aloof, carefree, timeless, and playful. So, it’s little wonder that the Australian brand’s signature throwon-and-go style has become somewhat of a fundamental puzzle piece for those chasing a life less complicated and confined by a 9-5.
Since launching in 2014, SIR. – an acronym for separates, intimates, and ready-to-wear – has cemented itself as an essential label for the discerning woman, with founders Nikki Campbell and Sophie Coote cornering the market thanks to their trans seasonal pieces that are both feminine and full of gumption. But what’s their secret? It’s simple, really. They just design for themselves…
How was the brand born?
We founded SIR. with a desire to fill a gap in our own wardrobes with minimal, elevated pieces that you could pop in your suitcase and travel the world with. We started out with a linen capsule which sold out within the first few hours of launching, and the rest is history.
What are your roles within the business?
We both sit across all aspects of the business, collaborating together on the creative direction and design, and leading the strategy for each department of the business.
What is the SIR. aesthetic?
Quintessential Australian style spanning across separates, intimates, and ready-towear for an eternal summer.
Who is the SIR. woman?
She has a distinct personal style, a sense of adventure, and an eagerness to inspire. She’s not one specific person – it’s more about the energy she embodies.
What was the decision behind opening your second store in Brisbane?
Since opening our Bondi flagship store in December last year, we have had a desire to expand the physical presence of the brand across different locations. The stores offer an all sensory experience for our customers to immerse themselves in the brand. We have a strong customer base in Brisbane, and saw it as the perfect next move in expanding our retail footprint.
Has your aesthetic changed over time?
We started the brand at 24-years old. Our collections very much reflected our personal style of that time. Now in our 30s, we are still designing for ourselves, so the evolution of our aesthetic has organically evolved with us. In saying that, we still design for our 24-year old selves – we never want to lose that girl.
What inspires you?
We look to vintage architecture, art, and design in all aspects. We’re inspired when we travel the world, when we are with our team, and our nearest and dearest.
What is the creative process behind each collection?
Our travels really form the basis of inspiration for our collections. On these travels, we visit print houses to source inspiration for our SIR. exclusive prints which are adapted in-house by our design team, and spend hours exploring vintage fashion stores, galleries, and new cities. Following a trip, we meet with our team to share vintage pieces, trinkets, and artwork we have sourced on our travels, and share shapes and colours we found interesting. From there, we work closely with the team to bring all of these elements together to create a cohesive collection and the next evolution of SIR.
What is your most memorable SIR. moment yet?
Seeing SIR. worn by people on our travels. There are so many, but it’s always incredible
seeing a woman on the other side of the world wearing our clothes and styling it in her own way.
What are your future goals for the business?
We want to continue to create collections that lean into the feeling of eternal summer, and continue to share our SIR. vision with the world. We are planning a number of activations and pop ups globally next year, and can’t wait!

Dance the night away
SUNSHINE STATE OF STYLE
The dance floors of Fortitude Valley are set to be red hot this party season. You can’t hit the town without a designated pair of party shoes, which is why we’re all over the platform heel trend! Harkening back to 70s disco glamour, twinkle under the party lights in your beautifully bejewelled ‘fit and sky-high heels.
Riverside cocktails City slicker
Keep it fun and flirty when heading out for some frivolity this silly season. Sipping on a fruity cocktail as the sun sets over Brisbane city calls for a playfully feminine outfit. Pastel hues and modern florals pair perfectly with coloured gems and funky shoes!
Brisbane by night is a sultry affair. Whether you're traipsing around James Street or dining out in the CBD, you’ll be looking dishy in an all-black ensemble. Bring life to a staple black outfit with textural elements such as feathers or patent leather, and don’t forget a bit of bling this soirée season.

Activewear this season is all about pops of brights and a varsity aesthetic, so opt for masculine tank tops and retro-inspired sneaks.
Bulimba, Paddington, West End… the brunching potential is endless in our River City! For slow Sundays about town, we can’t go past a matching set. They’re effortlessly stylish, making even the most manic of us look put together.
Golden shores
Just a short drive out of the city and we’re blessed to have some of the world’s most beautiful coastlines. For the beach babes hitting the GC or the northsiders heading to Noosa, opt for a sunset colour palette for shoreline adventures. Crochet is one of this summer’s biggest trends and makes for a perfect throw-over for a sun-soaked day at the coast.

Forever on
HOLIDAY
Adored by Gigi Hadid and Emma Chamberlain, Sydney label Emma Mulholland on Holiday has us wanting to switch on our out-of-office early.
By OLIVIA ASHWORTH
There’s something about being on holiday that traditionally brings out the best in us all. Days spent by the beach, lounging, relaxing, and of course afternoons draped in colourful and tropical prints that would otherwise be a bit too daring to don. But what if those feelings could be emulated into the everyday?
Inspired by this vision, Emma Mulholland entered the Australian fashion scene with her namesake label – Emma Mulholland on Holiday in 2017. Elevating the fabrications and fits of iconic holiday wear, the label’s fun and modern twist on 80s and 90s souvenir looks have created a reputation for themselves, offering styles that are not only perfect for vacation, but for before, after, and beyond.
Capturing the drifting, restless traveller’s heart, the brand has quickly become known for their fun-loving, Hawaiian-inspired prints. Envision baby pinks, bright greens, and smiley hibiscus designs that would almost make your younger self proud. Now coveted and collected all over the world, their threads have spanned far from the beaches of Sydney, worn by the likes of Gigi Hadid, Emma Chamberlain, and Hailey Bieber. The label’s latest collection, their first foray into swimwear, takes the brand into new waters and is a beautiful mix of both practicality and frivolity. “We’re very laid back here [in Australia]. For summer, you need to think about the stages of the outfit as there is always a chance of an afternoon dip, before heading out for dinner,” Emma says.
A nod to perhaps a future of fashion becoming more carefree, fun, and truly young at heart, we can’t deny that the notion of forever being on holiday is one we can get behind.

Launched in 2016 “by total accident” By Shyanne the Label is a slow fashion brand that believes in designing timeless, easy-to-wear pieces that will never go out of style – think flowy shirt dresses, cute linen sets, and breathable pieces. We sat down with Founder Shyanne Mirabelli to find out more.
By PENELOPE PELECAS
Hi Shyanne, thanks for chatting to us! What inspired you to start your own label?
I started By Shyanne by total accident. I was studying podiatry and I wasn’t earning very much at the time. I had a lot of events to attend, and I constantly struggled to find sustainable clothing within my budget. I made the decision to sew my own clothes for any events that I had. After posting photos of them on my Instagram, I had people reach out and request that I make them outfits. Soon after I released my first range, and the rest is history!
How would you describe your label?
By Shyanne is a timeless, Australian-made, and sustainable clothing label. We use high-quality natural fibres for our garments, which is what makes them perfect for the Australian climate.
When designing I’m often inspired by my environment or my travels, so our garments have a real resort wear vibe to them. My designs [are] somewhat simplistic, and this allows each person to create their own individual style whilst [still] embracing the trends.
What
sets By Shyanne apart from other fashion labels?
Our garments are made in Brisbane and all our fabrics are purchased from local Australian-owned suppliers. We aim to be completely transparent about how and where our garments are made.
What trends are you loving right now?
I’ve always been a lover of neutral tones, but I’m all about bold colours at the moment. You can have so much fun pairing a cobalt blue dress with bright orange accessories.
What’s next for By Shyanne?
I’m super excited to launch my summer collection [later] this year. I had a beautiful baby boy in March, and for a large portion of the year I decided to embrace my new role as a mother and take a step back from designing. I took this time to gather inspiration for the [new] collection, along with a few maternity and breastfeedingfriendly styles as well.

Buying a home or an investment property can be challenging. There are so many things to consider, from the location and the layout of the property through to potential risks. The good news is, teaming up with a trusted buyer’s agency like Streamline Property Buyers in Wilston will take the guesswork out for you.
The boutique buyer’s agency is run by husband-and-wife duo Melinda and Scott Jennison, who live and breathe property.
“We’ve always been very heavily involved in property buying, renovation, and developing properties throughout Brisbane,” Melinda says.
She has always had a passion in real estate thanks to her parents who were property investors.
“I decided to pursue what I was really passionate about,” Melinda, who previously worked in research, says. “It never feels like work for me.”
Melinda is now not only the director of the Streamline Property Buyers team, but she also co-hosts the Brisbane Property Podcast (a free educational podcast focussed on the Brisbane property market) with Scott. She’s also the Queensland State Representative for Real Estate Buyers Agent Association (REBAA), Australia’s Premier Industry Association, and recently won Buyer’s Agent of the Year at the 2022 REIQ Awards for Excellence.
“We got into this area of real estate because we felt [like] buyers were under represented,” she says.
The Streamline Property Buyers team will help you find the right investment property or home and take the stress out of the process with suburb recommendations, off-market opportunities, on-site inspections, auction bidding, and everything in between. The team pride themselves on excellent customer service and are driven by achieving results
and the right outcomes. They also ensure each client knows what to expect every step of the way, so there’s no room for error and you walk away feeling confident. Streamline Property Buyers are also one of the only buyer’s agencies in Brisbane to have a fully licenced builder on the team.

Reformer Pilates is shaping up to be one of the most popular forms of exercise, and for good reason – it’s effective, fun, and relatively easy to pick up, so anyone, at any age and fitness level can get started.
For those who haven’t tried it before, Pilates is a form of low-impact exercise that strengthens and tones the muscles. Some of the many benefits include increased flexibility, better balance, total body strengthening and improved core strength.

SPREAD HOLIDAY CHEER
Be a helping hand: six ways you can give back this season.
By TEAGAN WITHEROW
So, you’re on the quest for a little do-gooding? After all, ‘tis the season of giving – from gifting beloved family members to spreading some much-needed holiday cheer, it’s officially the time of year when we start thinking about what we are grateful for and in turn, how we can give back to those in need. But admittedly, figuring out how to give back can be a daunting task – where to start, what to give, and how to do so. Don’t fret, there’s a plethora of ways to spark joy this season (that aren’t just about gifting friends and families). Here are some ideas that are sure to delight everyone!
Support creatives
Donating is a no-brainer when it comes to giving, so why not make an impact by becoming a sponsor to an organisation that couples with your hobbies and interests?
If you’re an art or muso lover then the Brisbane Symphony Orchestra, Upbeat Arts, and Institute of Modern Art are ideal not-forprofit organisations to get involved in! Help them continue playing a role in enriching our community with colourful art, culture, and entertainment.
Donate blood
Give the gift of life this year by donating blood at Australian Red Cross Lifeblood – one of the most trusted not-for-profit health service providers in Australia! This organisation saves lives in all kinds of amazing ways and now you could too. Just one hour of your time could provide up to three days of life-changing treatment for someone who needs it!
Buy from brands that give back
It’s no secret that you’re probably doing a lot of purchasing this season, whether it be buying stocking fillers, summer soirée outfits, or big-ticket gifts for loved ones – you can still do your bit and give back by shopping!
Look for ethical brands that donate products and resources to charities: Deiji Studios, St Agni, and Del Rainbow are just a few of the many brands that give back each time you shop. Shop smarter not harder!
Dine out
Calling all foodies – if you love to eat, then you probably love to dine out too, and by doing so you’re already supporting your local favourites! But what you might not realise is that your beloved restaurants and cafes could be facing several challenges, from higher food costs to supply chain issues. So, how can you help? Write a positive review, give them a tip, or simply ditch the fastfood takeaways and order direct instead!
Stay sustainable
It’s possible that the world has never been as eco-aware as we are right now, yet Christmas tends to be a time notoriously known for excess and waste. So, if you’re wondering how to be more environmentally conscious this year, then simply avoid single-use plastics, look for organiccertified food and clothing, buy second-hand, or gift an experience. Christmas is about quality not quantity so don’t forget to go green where you can!
Volunteer at local charities
Did you know volunteering can help counteract the effects of stress, combat depression, and provide a sense of purpose? It makes for a great opportunity to share your time and talents all while making a difference in someone else’s life (so it’s a win-win really). Operation Christmas Child, Christmas Hamper Appeal, and Fare Share are just three of the many Brisbane-based organisations that rely upon their volunteers. After all, time is just as valuable as money so sign up as a volunteer to help give back this year.
It’s the most wonderful time of year, and with so many ways to give this season, the spirit of Christmas seems within reach. May your Christmas be merry and your worries be few!

While Revel has your classics like chicken parmigiana, buffalo chicken wings, and loaded fries, you’ll also find pork and watermelon salad (the flavour combo you didn’t know you needed!), lemon pepper calamari, and a Cubano sandwich (pulled pork, mustard, cheese, pickle, jalapeno, and prosciutto – yes, it’s as delicious as it sounds). It’s also probably the only brewery you’ll find that has three highstandard steaks on the menu. The team at Revel take pride in offering the same quality food as their beers.
Revel is also the perfect place to host an event thanks to its open layout. Whether it’s your work Christmas party, milestone birthday, or end-
of-year catch up with friends, the Revel team will do their best to make it a memorable one. Did we mention the brewery is also dog-friendly? So, you won’t have to leave any furry friends off the invite!
The brewery, which is open seven days a week, also hosts trivia nights on Thursdays and is looking forward to adding more continual social activities in the New Year. No plans for New Year’s Eve yet? Revel is gearing up to host their biggest event of the year – keep your eyes peeled for more info!
Next time you’re looking for a place to catch up with friends, where you can drink, eat, and enjoy all arvo long, a drive out to Revel in Morningside will not disappoint.

Start your journey to plumper, firmer, and more radiant skin with a consultation at SCinjectables.
You’ve probably heard about the latest treatment that’s landed on Australian shores and is found through the doors of Kangaroo Point’s SCinjectables clinic – we’re talking about Profhilo, of course! Touted as a game-changing treatment that promises to reduce and prevent the ageing process of the skin. It’s a revolutionary, firstof-its-kind treatment, that addresses hydration from beneath the skin. But perhaps you’re left wondering what it entails and how you can jump on the bandwagon. After all, asking your family and friends for skincare advice can only go so far, instead bring in the experts (and by experts we mean SCinjectables leading registered nurse, Su-en Chow).
A professional consultation should be the first
step you take when considering starting a new skincare treatment like Profhilo and here’s why: one, no two people have the same skin and two, putting your face in another’s hands is an act of pure trust – essentially the consultation process is a blessing for both the client and the nurse! It offers an opportunity for the nurse to get to know your skin, medical history, and allergies, while it gives the client the ability to discuss their skin goals and needs.
At SCinjectables your initial consultation is free of charge with no obligation to continue! Su-en is there to listen to your concerns and provide a tailored treatment plan for you based on her years of experience in the cosmetic injection industry. Su-en believes that the key to achieving real results is through having
a consultation.
So, here’s what you need to do to get started with Profhilo – first, book in for a free initial consult, where you’ll have a face-to-face appointment with a medical practitioner who will script up the treatment, and then you can officially book for the treatment!
“The treatment is ideal for rejuvenating skin on the face, neck and decolletage, as well as the back of hands,” Su-en says. “While some people have reported to see improvements after the first treatment, it is ideal to have two treatments one month apart and the best results are generally seen one month after the second treatment.”

HOME GROWN
They’re the all-Aussie skincare company that proves that close to home, is close to perfection. Radically rethinking skincare, Biologi is innovating our native plants into active, potent, and pure products that deliver real results without hurting the earth – proving clean skincare actually works.
By BETHAN WARRIOR
Bk VITAMIN C FACE AND EYE SERUM
Native ingredient: Kakadu plum
This native plant has been a wonder ingredient amongst Indigenous people for thousands of years as both a medicine and a food source. It’s a traditional source of bush tucker and has been used as an antiseptic remedy, proving its nutritional and healing properties. As the richest natural source of vitamin C, Biologi delivers a skincare-first by utilising this plant to create the world’s first natural form of vitamin C, not ascorbic acid. These high levels of vitamin C found in Kakadu plum can help to diminish fine lines, pigmentation, and redness, whilst increasing the suppleness of the skin and helping to combat damage from harmful UV rays.

“100% ACTIVE, 100% POTENT, 100% PURE SKINCARE.”
Bqk RADIANCE SERUM DUO
Native ingredient: Quandong
Whilst quandong has been used throughout the ages by Aboriginal communities for its healing and nutritious properties, it is a relatively new ingredient to the skincare world. Containing powerful antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, the leaves, bark, and seeds of quandong are all traditionally used as medicine and healing ointments. When applied topically as a singleplant extract, it protects the skin against sun damage and pollution, and prevents harmful toxins from entering the delicate dermal layer.
Quandong is jam-packed with alpha-amino acids that lock in the natural moisture to keep cells hydrated from within. Featured in the evening half of this serum duo, the actives work in synergy with the skin’s natural hydrating processes to leave a complexion bright, dewy, and glowing.
Bf RESTORE FACE AND BODY SERUM
Native ingredient: Finger lime
Nicknamed the ‘caviar of fruit’, this multifaceted ingredient seems like it was made to be in skincare! Containing three times the amount of vitamin C found in a mandarin, as well as more antioxidant content than the beloved superfood goji berries, this all-Aussie hidden gem will take pride of place on your vanity. Biologi’s Bf Serum is a multitasker for hydration that can be used all over the body – even on the face, hair, and lips! Its unique blend of fruit acids hydrate, soothe and repair, leaving the skin feeling smooth and supple. Bf serum is the ideal serum for anyone with sensitive, dry, and irritated skin who is looking for a boost of hydration.
Bd LUMINOSITY
FACE SERUM
Native ingredient: Davidson plum
Davidson plum in its pure form provides a storehouse of vitamins and antioxidants that leaves skin looking refreshed, radiant, and luminous. This powerhouse ingredient is working hard for your skin. It helps to reduce skin blemishes, increase hydration, strengthen skin cells, balance sensitive skin and provide enzyme exfoliation and antioxidant protection from damaging free radicals. Not bad for a little plum! The Bd Face Luminosity Serum is the perfect all-rounder, taking this rainforest inhabitant and using it at 100% potency to have your skin at its best and brightest.
Bm REGENERATE ANTI-AGEING SERUM
Native ingredient: Mountain pepper berry Rich in phytonutrients, mountain pepper berry extract is not only an excellent tonic for the body but also highly effective when applied topically to the skin. Australian-grown mountain pepper berry is the hero ingredient for the Bm Regenerate serum because of its superior antioxidant and collagenboosting potential. This revolutionary serum contains high antioxidant capacity and boasts an array of skin benefits such as enhancing collagen production, repairing barrier function, and increasing hydration to gently defy the visible signs of ageing.

THE REALM OF natural beauty
Feed your body and soul with the essence of luxe.
By TEAGAN WITHEROW
It comes as no surprise that balmy nights beneath burning sunsets and the breathtaking views of the pyramids in Egypt led to the creation of Asrìq – an iconic skincare and fragrance brand stocking body oils that offer a modern twist on 4,000-yearold ancient traditions. The oils are designed to nourish the skin with omegas and vitamins and leave you smelling irresistible with scents that are activated by your natural body heat!
Asrìq was created by Ashleigh Sims following her trip to ancient Egypt where oiled perfumes lined the streets and their aromas filled the air. Upon touchdown in Australia, Ashleigh set out to find a nourishing unscented oil to infuse with perfume but the options available either smelt like essential oil or contained harmful ingredients. So, Ashleigh developed her own premium blend nutrient-rich oil and infused it with bespoke scents she created inspired by destinations from Bondi to Ubud and Marrakech to Byron Bay. We asked Ashleigh to share her inspiration and uncover her signature scent from the range.
Where do you seek inspiration?
The inspiration for Asrìq unknowingly stemmed from the colourful and ambrosial souks of Egypt. Since then, I have developed bespoke fragrances to mix with my body oil that are reminiscent of other fascinating places I have travelled to. We have the Luxor scent that is reminiscent of where it all began, in Egypt; Mirissa, reminiscent of Sri Lanka, Marrakech reminiscent of Morocco, and Ubud reminiscent of Indonesia. And, of course, two scents reminiscent of places in Australia being Bondi and Byron Bay.
What is your signature scent?
I would love to say I have a signature scent, but truth be told, my scent preference changes with the season and how I am feeling at the time. During summer and warmer days, I tend to gravitate towards the Asrìq Mirissa and Bondi scents. When the weather is cooler, I go for a scent that feels more like a warm hug and for me that is the Asrìq Ubud or Marrakech scent. For a night out, I drench myself in Byron Bay.
Number one skincare tip?
Our skin shows the life we live. Nourishing it internally as well as externally will help keep skin glowing and looking youthful for longer. Investing in products that can assist with this will give long-term benefits.

Introducing, Ima Asali
Get to know the founder of a world-class cosmetics line.
By TEAGAN WITHEROW
In the spotlight today: mother of two boys, loving wife, and ultimate girl boss, meet Ima Asali! Ima is the official founder of Mellow Cosmetics – an uncomplicated, luxurious, and affordable Brissy makeup brand. Ima is as down-to-earth and approachable as they come, aware that your journey to selfconfidence starts on the inside. Plus, we’re pretty sure she has superpowers... Here’s what makes her tick!
In three words how would you describe Mellow Cosmetics?
Fun, effortless, and timeless.
Where do you seek inspiration?
In nature – observing different colour combinations and how they work together to make nature as beautiful as it is. I also pay a lot of attention to beauty and fashion trends from decades ago, what makes them great, and how I can redo them in a better way with a modern twist.
Tell us how Mellow Cosmetics came about?
The idea of Mellow came about in late 2013 while I was at home on maternity leave. My leave was nearing its end and I had a strong urge to stay home and care for my baby for longer, I wanted to watch all his milestones, so I was determined to find a way to be a stay-at-home mum and earn an income. It was a gut feeling, an instinct, and I always follow my instinct knowing it came to me for a good reason.
When I launch a product and receive such amazing feedback from our customers via emails, social, and from makeup artists that we work with. I always say if a makeup artist keeps coming back for more, then I’ve done an outstanding job!
Best career advice you’ve ever received?
Don’t get so caught up in your work that you forget to enjoy life! Once you enjoy the little things in life, everything in your business will start going well too.
What makeup trends are you loving right now?
My favourite trend is the no makeup, makeup trend – I love how makeup has evolved over the years, beauty routines have been simplified to suit our busy lives and I love that as a busy mum! Think tinted moisturiser, fluffy brows, cream blush, and lip gloss.
So much! I have been working on tinted moisturisers, cream bronzers, and cream blushes for the past three years – we had a setback due to the pandemic and supply chain difficulties but we are back on schedule with some amazing products set to launch in 2023, plus more skincare products to launch for my skincare brand, Stuf Skin.

Share the gift of gratitude
‘Tis the season to be jolly, with parties and presents, rest and relaxation on the horizon. In the fun and frivolities, it’s easy to go from one event to another mindlessly. In doing so, we take things and people for granted, and fail to value how privileged we really are.
In this silly season, set aside time daily to list things you are thankful for. It may simply be access to good food, great friends, or a roof over your head. On days when you are busy or stressed, review your list. Get in the habit of thanking people for what they do. Even expressing thanks to people doing small things makes a difference to them, you, and others.
When people are negative or resentful, look for the best in them and see that as a sign they need compassion. Stay close to those who struggle. Helping them is not only the right thing to do, but it also has a domino effect in the world. When you start noticing more around you, gratitude will be enhanced, and you’ll see it become contagious!
VARICOSE VEINS with Dr Nicholas Kemp
Ditch the itch
Summer can be a very irritating time of year for those who suffer from itchy legs. A lesser-known symptom of venous disease is a condition called stasis dermatitis or varicose eczema. It can present initially with flaky dry skin but can progress on to red, blistery plaques and skin colour changes.
Varicose eczema occurs because of venous insufficiency, a form of venous disease that occurs when veins are not doing their job properly (returning blood back upwards). Increased pressure because of the pooled blood can cause fluid to leak into surrounding tissue. The immune system reacts to this causing the skin to flare up.
The good news is varicose eczema can be treated several ways. Compression stockings help to improve circulation in the leg, which in turn relieves symptoms. They also prevent scratching which can lead to cuts on the skin which might develop into painful skin ulcers. Using an unperfumed moisturising cream twice a day can also help to keep skin smooth and soft, while topical steroids can help to reduce skin inflammation over the course of a few weeks.
However, while the above options will provide some relief, to eliminate the venous eczema altogether, the varicose veins will need to be treated eventually. The best part is that improvement can be seen and felt on the legs very soon after treatment. Our books are now open for initial consultations in 2023.

TRAVEL INSIDER
Up, up and away!
December is traditionally the month of giving and a time to reflect on the year that was.
Over the last month, I’ve been very fortunate to travel across South Africa.
As we head into the holiday season, it’s a time to be grateful and a reminder of those in need. When it comes to travel, giving is integral as we can positively impact the countries and communities we visit. This can be by being a conscious traveller and helping our planet by planting trees, supporting animal conservation, or simply buying locally-produced goods and services, including your souvenirs.
The same goes for tipping. Many Australians are unfamiliar with tipping as it’s not part of our culture or economy. As travellers we need to remain mindful that in many countries tipping is the norm – it acknowledges your gratitude for the service and it’s also a significant part of peoples’ wages. Next time you travel and receive exceptional service, remember to give generously as you’re most likely feeding a local family. Stuck on Christmas gift ideas? Why not give the gift of travel? Drop me a line about purchasing a travel gift voucher today. Think big, shop small and buy local. Until next year…happy holidays Stylers!
BRANDING AND DESIGN
Turning your identity into a brand
As an entrepreneur or small business owner, you want to attract as many clients as possible, while still adhering to an overall design style that conveys the creativity you stand for. You might struggle to find the colours and fonts that work well with your brand, or maybe you have no idea how to translate your vision into a design. It’s time to create a professional brand.
Branding has always been important, but the way your brand shows up online now (after the pandemic) is more important than ever before:
• Lo ts of people are still working from home and will continue to do so. This is an opportunity for you to get a lot of new eyes on your brand.
• People are craving connection. They want reliability and a sense of community. Let your brand be a source of connection and comfort
• Communicate. Your customers want to know in which way they can support you. Use your brand consistently.
• Retail therapy. With everyone shopping online you want to make sure your tone of voice and visuals are on point.
I’m Sylvia, freelance designer and mentor. Through SCREATIVE, I help other entrepreneurs and small business owners translate their identity into a strong brand design.
I believe that nature is one of our greatest sources of inspiration, so when I’m not designing, I’ll be by the ocean or surfing, looking to catch the perfect wave. Let’s chat!

Slow down, don’t rush
There’s no doubt, you’ve been dreaming of your new home for a long time, and been busy saving, saving, and saving. Now, it’s time to start the house search, which can be both an exciting and daunting experience.
It’s important to remember to take time to enjoy this process as it can get a little overwhelming. If you don’t find something you love from the get-go, don’t stress as a home that you love will eventually pop up. I always tell my clients to never settle for less just because you think you’re in a time crunch. Never feel the pressure to buy, as the best time to buy is when you find your perfect house and you can afford it.
If it takes a few extra months to buy your forever home, then that is okay too. Hey, this may not even be your forever home, but a starter home that will set you up for the future! You’ll be thanking yourself six months down the track knowing that you’ve waited for the right thing to pop up.

Declutter and donate
During the Christmas period we rightfully get caught up in the festivities with friends and family. While we should definitely indulge, making some time for those who aren’t as fortunate is a thoughtful gesture.
The days during Christmas and New Year are a good time for a wardrobe cleanse. The rule is, if you haven’t worn an item in the last 12 months, it’s time for that beautiful piece to find a new home. A wardrobe cleanse provides clarity and identifies holes in your wardrobe, which you can either fill in the new year sales or strategically organise in early January when you have a bit more time up your sleeve.
Once your garments have been separated into two piles (keeping and passing on), I’d recommend looking to the following organisations: Labels on the Lawn, held in October each year and the crème de la crème of charity clothing sales, Designer Rummage – Women’s Legal Service (at the moment, the event is only for women’s clothing, however this may change in the new year), and Suited to Success, a styling services location in Fortitude Valley for both men and women.
Please ensure the garments are in good to great condition with no stains, recently cleaned, packed neatly, and delivered in a garment bag or box. Enjoy the festive season and be generous!

The first auction, Important Jewels, takes place on 6 December at 6pm (AEDT). Our pick? Lot 108 (pictured to the right) – this is a pink spinel and diamond brooch by Verdura. The second auction, Holiday Jewels, will be held on 15 December at 2pm (AEDT).

POWERFUL ART
Renowned Waanyi artist Gordon Hookey embarks on his five-month residency at the Museum of Brisbane.
By BETHAN WARRIOR

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT
Known as the ‘poster provocateur’, Gordon Hookey’s latest work sees the prolific collector recreate his Yeronga studio poster mural in the iconic Brisbane building. Vibrant and engaging, the collage of bright colours, bold slogans and captivating messaging combine into a visually arresting piece with subject matter ranging from protest banners and social justice issues to international iconography and pop culture.
When speaking to Gordon, he describes how the collection started purely by accident through his days as a student at the University of Queensland, attending protests, concerts, and a variety of other events back in 1983. With a strong theme of our shared humanity throughout the artwork, Gordon’s work displays an extremely personal depiction of his memories over the last 40 years, whilst simultaneously creating something shareable and relatable to all that view it. He talks of when onlookers view the collection, there is an undeniable “sense of familiarity, of connection.” A visual representation of our shared history, the poster collection is innately nostalgic, reminding us of events, music or art that evokes powerful memories. Examining where Aboriginal and nonAboriginal art converges is at the root of Gordon’s practice, which manifests as bold, graphic presentations that demand attention. His work is known for its biting satire of
Australian culture and politics, and witty critique of racism in his unique, comic-style text and vibrant colours. Gordon details how at the core of every piece he’s, “thinking about ethics as an individual, how one can be the best version of themselves.”
Bringing a voice to marginalised groups appears at the heart of the poster collection and as Gordon says, “one of the things I aspire to is to be dignified, to have dignity, to have people feel dignity.”
Witnessing Gordon’s work feels perfectly juxtaposed. It encourages a critical examination of our past, a questioning of our culture as well as an internal examination of how we each relate to each other as human beings. Opposite to its somewhat heavy content, the vibrant colours and collage style bring a sense of nostalgia and lightness to the piece that makes it a joy to meander by.
This thought-provoking residency at MoB will offer spectators an intimate
perspective of the artist in his studio. As Artist in Residence, Gordon will be in attendance at MoB on Tuesdays and Thursdays until March 9, 2023, allowing visitors to witness his creativity in action, draw inspiration from his impressive poster compilation, stop to have a yarn, and perhaps even help the artist add to his evolving collection.

SCANDI LIVING
For two decades, Melbournians have had the luxury of popping into Great Dane Furniture whenever they want to browse world-class Scandinavian furniture designs. Now, it’s Brissy’s turn, with their newly-opened state-of-the-art showroom.
Founded by Anton Assaad (pictured) in Melbourne in 2002 from a love of classic Danish design, Great Dane has built quite a
reputation for quality, service, craftsmanship and knowledge, and offers an exclusive range of designer furniture, homewares, and lighting by celebrated Scandinavian manufacturers and designers.
The new luxurious showroom lives on Prospect Street in Fortitude Valley, a short five-minute walk from the hustle and bustle of James Street. And it’s nothing like you’ve seen before – the showroom has been transformed into a modernist lover’s dream, with a light and airy backdrop complete with sage green and white walls and high ceilings to let the furniture and lighting do the talking.
“We have been searching [for a location] a lot over the years,” Great Dane Founder Anton Assaad says. “We love the close proximity to the heartbeat of James Street and connection to Artedomus and Ryan Renshaw Gallery (The Renshaws).”
“It’s a place where we want people to come and stay for a long time because the process of [purchasing] from us can be quite lengthy, so it’s important [to us that] people feel relaxed and at home.”
As for what’s on show, Creative Director Megan Marshall spent many hours considering the natural beauty and enviable summer heat of Queensland, which inspired a new palette of materials including textural natural fibres like linen and cotton. A variety of celebrated designers from around the world are showcased in-store like Hans Wegner, Nanna Ditzel, J. L Møller, Verner Panton and Arne Vodder, to name a few. You can also view luxury dining chairs from Kai Kristiansen, handcrafted dining tables from Snedkergaarden and hand-blown wooden and glass sculptures by Antrei Hartikainen and Carina Seth Andersson.
So, if you’re in the market for new furniture and would describe your home interior style as layered, contemporary, and inviting, the next time you’re wandering down James Street, a pop over to Great Dane will not disappoint –it’s Australia’s number one retailer of Danish and Scandinavian furniture for a reason.

Cruising is back and better than ever! If you’re planning to set sail in the near future, travel guru Rose Febo, who has spent more than 200 nights at sea, talks all things cruising.
Contributor ROSE FEBO
66 | STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU @STYLEMAGAZINES
There are many common misconceptions when it comes to cruising. Won’t I get bored, seasick, or claustrophobic? As an avid cruiser, along with my now grown-up children, who have cruised since they were children, cruising remains our preferred travel experience. Why, you ask? Cruising not only gives you choice and variety, but it’s unsurpassed. I’ve cruised over 200 nights on various ships of all shapes and sizes and not one trip has been the same. Below, I explore three of the most popular styles of cruising:
River cruising
If you love boutique hotels, you’ll love river cruising – it’s just like a floating five-star hotel complete with butlers and all-inclusive wining and dining. Unlike ocean cruising, where you sail at night, you’ll find most of the cruising happens during the day. Enjoy intimate shore excursions into villages and towns, where you’ll have the opportunity to meet locals – it’s a ship-to-shore experience with no crowds or lining up. You’re literally cruising the highways of history seeing views only visible from the river.
Ocean cruising
When you think ocean cruising, large ships, jam-packed itineraries, and kidfriendly activities probably pop into your head. Well, that’s exactly what it is. From world-class entertainment, casinos, kids’ clubs and dining options, there’s plenty to keep you busy. If you’re in need of some land time, explore the cruise port or book a shore excursion.
Expedition cruising
Expedition cruising is made for the adventurous traveller. Think allinclusive comfort and the latest technology paired with expert learning and enrichment (plus, an exquisite selection of food and wine onboard!). These cruises are all about immersion, education, and getting up close and personal with our wonderful world. Think Antarctica, Galapagos Islands, the Arctic, and the Kimberley – just to name a few. On these trips you’ll find a variety of people from botanists and naturalists to scientists and even professional photographers. If you love a David Attenborough documentary, then you’ll love an expedition cruise.
So, which to choose? I find combining cruises together is one of the best ways to see the world. I recently combined an ocean cruise of the Mediterranean with a river cruise and thought they complemented each other wonderfully! From the high seas to the intimacy of inland rivers, the contrast was mesmerising.
If you’re dreaming of escaping to the sea, contact me today – as an accredited cruise specialist and awardwinning travel agency, you can be rest assured you’re in good hands. If it’s value for money you’re looking for, cruising wins hands down.

MOVENPICK RESORT
BAREFOOT LUXURY STARTS AT 28 DEGREES
The adults-only luxe Byron Bay beach house you need on your radar.
By TRACY SINCLAIR
Idon’t want to gush, nah, I am. I’m going to gush. I just had the most divine short break, thanks to a magnificent human being, Deb Garske – owner and designer of the luxury guesthouse, 28 Degrees Byron Bay.
Deb (and her right-hand gal Maureen) was there to meet us, all smiles, when six slightly stressed out, deadline-centric women arrived at 28 Degrees. (However, interestingly not so stressed that we couldn’t slip away to Byron for two nights – wink wink).
Located just two blocks from the beach and a block from the action, 28 Degrees is a private residence in the heart of Byron Bay town. Inside, breezy and light-filled spaces have the most calming effect – I instantly felt myself breathe and walk slower. Every inch of the house has been thoughtfully designed for guest comfort. The décor too is meticulously curated. But that’s not to say it feels pretentious. Quite the opposite. This is a property where you can kick off your shoes and feel at home, particularly for a large family or group of friends.
28 Degrees is a truly versatile property, as it can be utilised in various ways to suit your holiday needs. There’s the main house that you can ’take over’ with exclusive access including a lap pool, along with beautifully appointed guest rooms each with their own bathroom. Separate from the main house, there are also fully self-contained guest rooms (each with a private plunge pool).
The property resonated with me on so many levels with its earthy decor (recycled French Oak floors, I adore you). It’s a place for tousled hair, bare feet and languid daze (yes, I meant daze), of bubbles, beach and books. The styling personifies Deb to the nth degree. An interior designer, hailing originally from Norfolk Island (fun fact – 28 degrees is the latitude of both Byron and Norfolk), the house embodies Deb’s philosophy of the ‘slow living reset’. And refreshingly, 28 Degrees is an over 21, adults-only zone, allowing for optimal relaxation.
There are too many features to unpack here, so I’ll do a quick dump of the things I loved most – the cowrie shell hanging on the front door handle, the Mountain Chai by Organic Tea Shop Noosa, the deliciously soft bed linen, the Maker&Sons armchairs, the homemade granola, the touch of exotic shells (which transported me back to my years as a kid in Fiji), the waterfall shower pressure, the artwork, and the lovely linen robe (which I legit wore the whole stay).
Pop this one on your list for a luxe girl’s weekend or next family celebration. 28 Degrees has the love of environment and comfort at its core. It’s a beautiful home and well worth a stay – I know you’ll be gushing at the end too!

JUST ANOTHER DAY IN THE OFFICE
Every life matters. But more importantly, every life can be saved. We take a glimpse into the everyday lives of real-life heroes.
By TEAGAN WITHEROW
Working 9am to 5pm in a small cubical with harsh fluorescent lights, uncomfortable chairs, and little to no human interaction is something many of us know all too well. We’ve become accustomed to our mundane dayto-day workplace practices – replying to emails, attending meetings, and dealing with deadlines. Although we often complain about our run-of-the-mill workdays they still (no matter what career we lead) offer a sense of comfort. After all, we get used to our schedules, they give us a sense of control and can be helpful in times of uncertainty and stress. But what if your everyday consisted of saving lives? Would it still be just another day in the office?
Meet Doctor Chris Cole, Nurse Emma Swete Kelly, and Firefighter Vittoria Cardamone – three Brisbane-based workplace heroes that save lives for a living. We asked each of them what a typical day in the ‘office’ looks like for them.
Emma Swete Kelly
Registered Nurse, Emma Swete Kelly, often finds herself working in the Children’s Emergency Department where she has to be prepared for anything and everything. Emma has to regularly combat tedious 12-hour work days, all whilst providing exceptional care to her patients and their families.
“It’s amazing when you see the team come together to provide the best possible care for very sick kiddies,” she says. “Knowing that we are doing everything within our power to save someone’s life and when that outcome is positive, it’s a pretty amazing experience!”
STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU
Vittoria Cardamone
There are few things braver than entering a burning building or putting yourself in harm’s way to save a life. But for firefighter, Vittoria Cardamone, being brave is just part of the job.
First and foremost, Vittoria gets ready for her day by preparing her protective clothing and placing her helmet on the truck (a little different to the usual workplace uniform). After morning protocol, her day could consist of anything from primary school visits and building inspections to emergency response calls that come through. Vittoria says, “the most rewarding part for me is that I never know what job I’ll be going to, but I always have the opportunity to help others.”
Doctor Chris Cole
Consultant cardiac and thoracic surgeon, Doctor Chris Cole, finds himself performing open heart surgery on the daily. He is one of Brisbane’s best heart surgeons and even successfully performed a world-first procedure to replace a metallic heart valve that had been turned down for traditional surgery. As many of us do, Chris follows a strict workplace agenda – his day starts bright and early at 4:30am to get some exercise in before he does his daily patient checks. Chris then hops into his scrubs and performs two or three openheart surgeries per day! His meticulous work is saving lives – one heart at a time.
These three workers ditched the weekly corporate targets and opted for lifesaving endeavours instead. Chris, Emma, and Vittoria save lives for a living – it’s just what they do. So, it comes as no surprise that without these workers (and all other workplace heroes) the world would be a little less.

How Styling Station is empowering women and farewelling fast fashion, one outfit at a time.
By YOLANDA MOORE
At Styling Station, flipping through the racks is no guilty pleasure. By booking a styling session at their Milton boutique, you’ll not only discover your personal style and walk away with a complimentary, sustainably sourced outfit, but Styling Station will also pay the service forward, gifting a session and outfit to a woman in need.
Founding Director Kylie Rowan is creating opportunities for labels to address environmental issues created by the fashion industry. “Styling Station provides a meaningful and effective way for brands to reduce their fashion waste,” she says. With local fashion partners like Calexico Boutique, they’re able to divert off-season
stock from landfill and boast an impressive range of brand-new designer and popular streetwear labels for customers to enjoy. To date, they have diverted over four tonnes of new fashion from landfill – which is truly an amazing accomplishment.
More than just a fashionable afternoon for you and your besties, Styling Station’s pay it forward system has also delivered over 500 complimentary services to women facing immediate crisis like homelessness and domestic violence. Tatiana, a Ukrainian refugee says her experience supported her after fleeing her war-torn home by making her feel “accepted and beautiful” in a new chapter
and new country. “We are created to uplift, support and walk alongside others,” Kylie says. “Whether that is lending an ear to make someone feel heard and valued, nurturing someone with your time and resources, or being generous and giving freely.”
So, how can you get involved? Book an individual or group styling session, join their Style Club or workplace program, or purchase a gift card for a unique, impactful Christmas gift. As Kylie says, “for each person to know they are loved, precious and honoured – no matter the circumstances they have walked through in life – is a gift I want to give everyone I meet.”
