EDITOR’S NOTE

W

ell, we’ve made it! Another year of providing you, our loyal readers, with quality local stories, fun edits, and photoshoots galore (in my opinion, we have one of the coolest jobs around!). The Style crew hit an inner-city rooftop for this month’s cover shoot with BMW Brisbane featuring the all-new BMW XM – not only does it have enormous power, but it’s also ridiculously good-looking and ecofriendly (take a look for yourself on page 14). Inside, we’ve shared eight heart-warming ways you can give back these holidays – after all, it is our Goodwill and Giving Issue – and spoke to the dynamic duo fighting homelessness through laundry (page 12). There’s also a fun risotto recipe from the team at Urban Valley Mushrooms. There’s no shortage of festive cheer with our New Year’s Eve inspired Haute List (I have my eyes on Asta Resort’s Jennifer Dress) and round-up of the very best Christmas markets from around the world. As we switch off and reflect on the year that’s been, we look towards 2024 with eager anticipation and hope you have a safe and happy festive season with the people you love most. Until 2024 – enjoy!

TRACY SINCLAIR EDITOR @styletracy

I

t’s hard to believe another year has come and gone, and what a cover to finish on. The day we shot with BMW Brisbane it was an absolute scorcher – we may have had to stop every 10 minutes or so to hide out in the car air-con, but it was SO worth it! Talking of sun safety, on page 20 you’ll find an in-depth chat with a local dermatologist on how to enjoy the outdoors safely this summer, plus an edit on our favourite Aussie sunscreens. And for those planning to trial a ‘dry Christmas’, I had the pleasure of interviewing the founder of Byron-born alcohol-free aperitivo brand Etota – the ruby-red sipper promises a bitter and sweet offering. On that note, a big thank you to all our clients and contributors who have supported us throughout this remarkable year, and of course, our loyal readers – we look forward to doing it all again in 2024! Happy holidays.

rom its origins in 2014 with an old van named Sudsy, two washing machines and some dryers, Orange Sky Australia has since seen almost a decade of transformative impact and thousands of people positively connected with clean clothing and warm showers. The simple yet ingenious initiative was developed by founders Nicholas Marchesi and Lucas Patchett in yours truly, Brisbane. Following a rewarding volunteering experience at a local food van, the pair felt compelled to extend their support to the community. Pairing this with the realisation that the simple joys of putting on clean clothes and taking a shower are privileges many take for granted, Nic and Lucas were inspired to act. And so, a few years after graduating, they hatched the idea to create a portable laundromat to service those facing homelessness. “It took three days and three washing machines to do our first official load. Sudsy, our beat-up old van, broke down the first two mornings in Spring Hill’s Wickham Park,” Nic recalls. Orange Sky now operates in 39 locations across Australia and four in New Zealand, proving that a simple idea can blossom into a nationwide movement. They have also expanded beyond laundry to include shower vans, hybrid vans, and portable laundry pods. Being coined the ‘laundromat of the future’ certainly comes as no surprise. Although innovation is crucial to Orange Sky’s mission (as seen in their sustainable and efficient inventions), Nic and Lucas emphasise that it’s more than innovation and clean clothes; it’s about fostering genuine connections and conversations.

STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

As the not-for-profit faces the challenge of increasing homelessness rates, Orange Sky remains dedicated to sustainable growth. The goal is to triple their impact by 2025 while adapting to a range of community needs – including expanding to more remote communities where laundry facilities are scarce. Nick and Lucas express gratitude for the collective effort of volunteers, donors, service providers, and friends who have contributed to the organisation’s success. As they enter the second decade of Orange Sky, Nic and Lucas are excited to continue their transformative journey, driven by innovation, compassion, and above all else, the power of connection. “What Orange Sky has become today is much larger than Lucas or I, it has been made possible by so many incredible people who believed in the idea and the need for the service,” Nic says. @STYLEMAGAZINES

he type of car you drive says a lot about your personality and lifestyle, and if you’re an innovator with an inclination towards the finer things in life, then the all-new BMW XM should be on your radar. Exclusive, expressive, and electrified… that’s how we would describe the BMW XM. At first glance, the XM may look like your normal luxury hybrid, but in reality, it’s so much more. Here’s why… The XM, by BMW M GmbH, combines the perfect blend of sophistication, comfort, and performance. Not only does it have enormous power, but it’s also ridiculously good-looking and eco-friendly. For those of you who are self-confessed car enthusiasts, here’s a further breakdown on the model’s technicalities. The XM is a highperformance car with electrified drive system, making it the most powerful BMW SAV on the road. It takes 4.3 seconds to hit 100km/h and can also reach a top speed of up to 140km/h and a range of 82-88 kilometres in electric mode. We can’t forget the newly-developed 4.4-litre V8 engine with cutting-edge M TwinPower Turbo technology and that distinctive M engine roar. Without laying eyes on the vehicle, you can tell the type of power it possesses and why it’s setting a new benchmark for luxury hybrid cars

in Australia. Did we mention it’s also the first standalone M product in over 40 years? Now, that’s a lot of firsts! While the car’s power is pretty impressive (okay, a lot), the look and feel of the XM is what really draws you in. The XM pushes the boundaries in the design space thanks to its eye-catching exterior and plush interior. From the extravagant body design and striking gold finishes to the logos engraved into the rear window, the team at BMW have truly thought of everything. The expressive style of the exterior design continues inside the cabin with the exclusive M Lounge, which is the epitome of luxury and comfort. Picture spacious rear seats, an illuminated headliner (the colour selection can be adapted to match driving mode and atmosphere), dark windows, heated backrests, and comfort cushions – we have experienced the M Lounge firsthand, so trust us when we say you and your passengers will be in luxury car heaven. As you move further along, the onepiece BMW Curved Display captures your attention with its sleekness, while the

vintage leather for the upper sections of the instrument panel and door panels add a touch of sophistication. The cockpit and front seats are designed entirely around an active driving experience and come with M multifunction seats, knee pads, and a model-specific M leather steering wheel. The XM is also 5G-enabled and offers a Wi-Fi hotspot, plus it comes with a wireless charging tray – perfect for those who are constantly on- the- go. Did we mention the XM also comes with a Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound system? It’s clear that the XM sets a new standard for luxury hybrid cars, allowing you the best of both the V8 and electric-vehicle worlds. Whether your ideal weekend consists of open roads and mountain tops, cruising through our beautiful River City, or both, you’ll find what you seek with the XM – a new wave of luxury cars. Take one for a spin to see for yourself (head online to brisbanebmw.com.au to book a test drive), you won’t be disappointed!

I recently visited Heavenly Spa by Westin, which is conveniently located within The Westin Brisbane, to treat myself with a much-needed refresh. From the second I stepped through the doors, I was met with a timeless blend of modern elegance and tranquillity. My experience started with an in-depth skin analysis with a therapist who explained the workings of the globally acclaimed DMK Enzyme Peel, a facial touted for its transformative and paramedical effects. She explained that unlike traditional facials, this works at a cellular level, promoting skin healing and regeneration. After changing into my lush, fluffy robe and soft slippers, I was guided into a private room overlooking the hotel’s incredible pool and swim-up bar. The therapist started off with a deep cleanse before applying a tightening enzyme mask on my face, neck, and décolletage. This was left on for 45 minutes. After allowing the DECEMBER 2023

Throw some

SHADE Slip, slap, and slop on these Aussie-made sunscreens this summer season. By NATALIE MCGOWAN

L

iving in Australia means making the most of our wonderfully warm weather and embracing an outdoor lifestyle. But while we love a sunburnt country, there are some serious health risks associated with being exposed to the intense Aussie sun. To further understand the importance of slip, slop, slapping, we chatted with Dr Godfrey Wagner, consultant dermatologist at The Skin Lab in Spring Hill.

deep into the skin’s dermis, causing silent but significant ageing and long-term damage. On the other hand, UVB rays are the troublemakers that damage the skin’s DNA at a much more potent level. Damage to the more superficial layers results in the above symptoms and eventually we develop pre-cancerous cells called solar keratoses. Both UVA and UVB rays are partners in crime when it comes to contributing to skin cancer, making it crucial to protect against both.

Which features are important to look for when buying sunscreen? It should offer broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays and be SPF 50+. Active ingredients matter too – zinc oxide or titanium dioxide for physical blocking or avobenzone and ecamsule for chemical protection. However, the best sunscreen to use is one that fits in well with your routine and budget and will be used every day regardless of your intended exposure.

What is sun damage? If you think of the sun as a Chernobyl in the sky, it is constantly releasing a dose of radiation to our skin. Eventually, this radiation can reach a critical level where the DNA in some areas of the skin becomes permanently changed and we can develop a cancer of the skin. The more sun exposure you have, the sooner the DNA changes occur.

Who is most susceptible to photoageing? The lighter your skin colour is, the more likely you are to be affected by the sun’s rays. Dermatologists use the Fitzpatrick scale to determine your risk. Type 1 (pale skin that always burns, light-coloured eyes with blonde or red hair) is most susceptible, and Type 6 (dark brown or black skin that tans easily and never burns) is least susceptible.

What are the common signs of sun damage? Symptoms include wrinkling, pigmentation changes, loss of skin tone, decreased elasticity, uneven skin texture, broken capillaries (spider veins), redness, and blotchiness.

How can we prevent photoageing ourselves? Prevention is the name of the game. Seek shade, especially during the sun’s peak hours, wear protective clothing, don’t forget sunscreen (SPF 50 or higher), and remember to reapply every two hours. Also be mindful of reflective surfaces like water, snow, and sand as they can intensify UV exposure.

What advice do you have for treating damaged skin at home? Start by incorporating antioxidants into your routine. Vitamin C and E are your skin’s best friends here. These powerhouses combat free radicals, the culprits behind cell damage. Consider using retinoids; they’re perfect for promoting skin cell turnover and improving texture. Alpha and beta hydroxy acids are your exfoliating allies, helping to remove those damaged skin cells.

What is the difference between UVA and UVB rays? UVA rays are sneaky, long-wave rays that go

Urban Valley mixed mushroom risotto MARKUS RAVIK

D

id you know there’s a mushroom farm in the heart of the Valley? Putting the ‘fun’ in fungi, Urban Valley was founded by two hospitality veterans to meet the calls from the Brisbane dining scene for 100 per cent Australian grown gourmet mushrooms. Now, their produce is featured in menus across the city – from Baja’s rich chestnut tostaditas to La De Lah’s spicy take on Malaysian berempah. Having recently launched into Harris Farm, getting your hands on local, quality mushrooms has never been easier (or tastier!). So, what’s cooking? Check out Urban Valley’s mixed mushroom risotto below – their go-to gateway recipe into the flavourful world of gourmet mushrooms. By DINUSHKA GUNASEKARA

Serves 2-3 30 minutes You’ll need: 4-6 cups chicken or vegetable stock 200g Urban Valley mixed mushrooms 2 tbsp olive oil 1/2 brown onion, diced 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 cup arborio rice 1/2 cup dry white wine 2 sprigs of fresh thyme leaves 1/4-1/2 cup parmesan, grated 20g of butter Salt and pepper

Method: 1. Break down the mushrooms by tearing or cutting into slightly smaller pieces. For more delicate mushrooms such as golden enoki or coral tooth, consider reserving them to saute at the end and lay over the top of the dish as a garnish. 2. Bring the stock to a gentle simmer in a saucepan. Warm stock is the key to a great risotto. Keep a ladle nearby. 3. Heat the oil in a wide, heavy non-stick skillet over medium heat then add the onions and cook gently until tender, for about 3-5 minutes. 4. Add the rice and stir until grains begin to colour. Deglaze by adding wine and cook,

stirring, until wine is no longer visible. 5. Add the mushrooms, garlic, and thyme, then stir for one minute. 6. Start adding the stock by ladling in just enough to cover the rice. The stock should bubble slowly. Stir continuously from this point on. 7. Add the stock one ladle at a time, stirring continuously until it’s almost completely absorbed, and then repeat this process until the rice is tender and creamy. Add in the butter and season the risotto with salt and pepper. 8. To finish, add in another small ladleful of stock to the rice along with the parmesan, and remove from heat. Serve right away.

Archer Brewing Aussie-made brews and tasty bites to match – say no more. When it comes to crafting authentic, Australian-made beers and tasty bites to match, Archer Brewing on Newmarket Road is leading the way. Despite only calling Wilston home since February this year, husband-and-wife duo Stuart and Lucy Martin have been brewing independently since 2017. As for the inspiration behind the name, the first plane Stuart, who’s an ex-commercial pilot, ever flew was an Archer, plus, the couple’s dog, who is often popping up on their social media, is also named, yes, you guessed it, Archer. The aviation theme carries over into the interior space with their one-of-a-kind plane wing bar top, but what really puts this brewery on the map is their delicious brew and food offerings. We were recently treated to a tasting at this family-run establishment, and boy were we impressed! Their core fleet is made up of mid-strength lager, rice lager, pale ale, and India pale ale. They also have cider on tap and are gearing up to launch their own ginger beer. Our favourite part? All brews (yes, even their ginger beer) are made using 100 per cent Australian ingredients. For the non-beer drinkers, they also offer cocktails, wines, and spirits. As for the food, prepare to tuck into tantalising dishes like salt and pepper squid with confit garlic aioli (this light and airy dish was a favourite), crispy and creamy chicken Caesar salad, cheese Kransky hot dogs, and buffalo cauliflower (the spicy seasoning pairs perfectly with the accompanying blue cheese sauce). And if smashed burgers are your thing, their S’mack burger with a double angus beef smash patty, double cheese, and parmesan butter is a must-try. Now, grab the fam and dig in! PS, Archer Brewing is hosting a special Christmas sing-along night on December 23 – stay tuned for more details. ARCHER BREWING 1/278 NEWMARKET RD, WILSTON P 0426 976 006 ARCHERBREWING.COM.AU

The joy of giving

Heading overseas these holidays or planning a road trip to the beach? Immobility can be a concern when travelling if you have venous disease. To be blunt: if you’re not moving, neither is your blood, which can increase your risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). Here are three rules to follow: 1. W ear compression. Improve your circulation by applying even pressure and support to aid the flow of blood. Travel socks can be found at most chemists, however if you have varicose veins, you should look at getting Class 2 stockings fitted by a phlebologist prior to travel 2. D rink plenty of water and get moving. Not only will your skin thank you but breaking up the car journey to stop at the service station or to walk around the plane will keep your blood flowing. Throw in some heel lifts, toe taps, and a bit of a massage 3. S tay cool in loose clothing. Do not wear tight-fitting jeans, instead choose breathable cotton or linen trousers. Travelling is not just about exploring new places and experiencing different cultures, it’s also an opportunity to practice responsible tourism and give back. Giving back while traveling can bring immense joy and fulfillment. Whether it’s teaching English, building homes for those in need, or assisting in wildlife conservation efforts, your contribution can make a significant difference. Another way to give back is by supporting local communities. Instead of staying in big chain hotels, why not consider staying in a locally-owned boutique hotel or dining at family-run restaurants? Lastly, consider thinking about ways you can be more environmentally-friendly on your travels. Travel responsibly by minimising your carbon footprint, respect wildlife and natural habitats, and participate in eco-friendly activities. You can go one step further and join beach clean-ups or tree-planting initiatives. This holiday season support local, shop small, and travel consciously. And if there is someone in your life who shares the same passion of ecofriendly travel, why not gift them with a travel voucher? Until next year, happy holidays Stylers! MARKETING STRATEGY with Charlie Coleman

COPORATE PSYCHOLOGY with Dr John Barletta

Will AI take over the world?

Goodwill and gratitude

Is AI destined to become humanity’s overlord, ruling over the remnants of civilisation while we shelter in caves from roaming gangs of robots? Possibly, but until then we might as well make the most of the incredible productivity benefits that AI has to offer. A powerful tool I use to fuel marketing strategies and communication is ChatGPT: a language model which generates text based on inputs you provide. While its attempts at producing Shakespeareanstyle love sonnets for my girlfriend have been dubious, it can easily provide the structure for content like marketing briefs, website text, advertising copy, and much more. Although the result will require some rewriting and tweaking to ensure that everything has the correct tone, it is an excellent tool for brainstorming and avoiding the overwhelming sensation of staring at a blank page. With free accounts available, start experimenting with ChatGPT to turbocharge your writing endeavours today.

The jolly season is here, with parties and presents, rest and relaxation. In the fun and frivolities, it’s easy to go from one event to another mindlessly. In doing so, we take things and people for granted, and fail to value how privileged we are. Set aside time daily to list things you are thankful for. It may simply be access to good food, great friends, or a roof over your head. On days when you are stressed, review your list. Get in the habit of thanking people for what they do. Even expressing thanks to people doing small things makes a huge difference. When people are negative, look for the best in them and see that as a sign they need empathy. Helping them is not only the right thing to do, but it also has a domino effect in the world. When you start noticing more around you, goodwill and gratitude is enhanced and it’s contagious.

Whether it’s popping a few bon bons across the dinner table or adding a festive wreath, Christmas decorations are not just about adorning your home, but investing in the magical ambience of the season. In the hustle and bustle of the holidays, let’s also take a moment to extend a helping a hand to those in need. This year, The Prop House Collective is supporting the incredible Hummingbird House over the festive season. We encourage others to reach out into their community, find a cause or charity and aid in whatever way they are able. As we come together in unity and compassion, let’s sprinkle a little bit of joy on the lives of those around us!

While Suit of Change (a charity project I previously ran), in generally speaking terms is in hibernation, I often find myself thinking about the cause, the service, and the people we assisted. The initiative encouraged people to donate their gently-used suits. After collecting the donated suits, I would tailor them to fit men who didn’t have the resources for a goodquality suit. The impact of this program worked on two levels. Firstly, it empowered men attending job interviews or important meetings by boosting their confidence and projecting a professional image. Secondly, the program championed sustainability in fashion. By repurposing suits, we were reducing waste and promoting a culture of recycling and mindful consumption. Furthermore, this created a sense of community and mutual care. The recipients aren’t just getting a suit, they’re receiving a symbol of hope and community support. For those looking to donate suits today, you are best to donate to Suited to Success (suitedtosuccess.org).

Merry MOMENTS Eight heart-warming ways to make a difference during the holidays. By TEAGAN WITHEROW

FE ATU R E

C

hristmas truly is the most wonderful time of the year – the shops are filled with eager shoppers, we get to spend quality time with our loved ones, and there’s that special Christmas joy in the air. But beyond all the glitz and glamour of the season, it’s also a perfect opportunity to give back to those in need. There are so many ways to spread the holiday cheer. It could be as simple as picking up Christmas cards from your favourite charity or donating a can of food to a local appeal. You can also give the greatest gift of all – your time – and volunteer for a worthy cause. As a wise source once said, and yes, we’re talking about the Grinch, “Maybe Christmas doesn’t come from a store. Maybe Christmas perhaps means a little bit more.” Without further ado, here’s how you can get involved in the days leading up to Christmas and on the big day itself.

Plant a coral to restore the reef Thanks to the Great Barrier Reef Foundation you can help plant coral, rejuvenate degraded reefs, and bring back wildlife to critical habitats by making a small donation. A donation of $30 will help grow corals, $60 will go towards research into heat-tolerant corals, and a sum of $120 will help restore critical reef habitats for threatened species. FOR MORE INFORMATION AND TO SUBMIT A DONATION VISIT GIVE.BARRIERREEF.ORG

Attend a ‘Cooking for a Cause’ class OzHarvest’s Cooking for a Cause is a hands-on cooking class open to corporate groups and led by talented chefs. Brushstrokes of BRISBANE Meet Tracey Lennon, the artist with a passion for painting our beloved River City. By NATALIE MCGOWAN

Hi Tracey! Firstly, tell us about yourself… I am a Brisbane artist, I’ve written and illustrated a kid’s book called Bad Hair Days, I’ve shown in regional and local art shows, and in the last two years I have become a full-time artist showing at Red Hill Gallery. What is your medium of choice? My first choice is paper collage. I use cardboard colours to cut out designs, which I then move around until the final design feels right. Recently, I’ve started painting acrylic on canvas and I like the freedom to shift between the two mediums. Many of your pieces feature various pools around Brisbane, where does this fascination stem from? My dad was a keen swimmer and my siblings and I have been swimmers our whole lives. 46 |

Swimming is my exercise and meditation; I love the buildings that house these pools and the community and joy that comes from swimming. How do you go about capturing the essence of Brisbane through your work? I’m often capturing how I feel about the place and my connection to it. I use colour, light, shade, and often quirky details. For example, I did a collage of the Old Museum where we went as kids. It’s such a unique building – red brick, ornate, and almost gothic. I contrasted the red brick with a hot indigo sky and blue shadows. How has Brisbane’s landscape and architecture changed over the years and how has this influenced your work? For anyone who grew up in Brisbane in the 70s and 80s, knows Brisbane’s landscape has changed dramatically. For me, there’s a sense of loss. The STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

buildings demolished during the Bjelke-Petersen years were icons like the Bellevue Hotel and Cloudland. So much of our built history was erased and I like to conjure it back in my work. Where is your favourite spot in Brisbane? Trammies Corner, situated on a leafy hill in Paddington, is where I thought of as my heart space – I liked to find peace just sitting in the shade looking over the city. Now, I spend my time at New Farm Park. It’s such a treasure in the inner city with its roses, curlews, and jacarandas. Which of your pieces are you most proud of? My first collage of Centenary Pool because it captured how I admired the mid-century architecture and how I felt about the pool, the colours of Brisbane, and swimming. The non-alcoholic club The French call it apéritif, the Italians say aperitivo, but for this Byron-born non-alcoholic brand, it’s simply Etota. By PENELOPE PELECAS

W

hether we want to admit it or not, drinking is arguably a big part of Australian culture. A glass at dinner every other night may seem harmless to most, but Kate Forrester, founder of Byron Bay alcohol-free aperitivo brand Etota, has experienced firsthand the ‘ugly side’ of it. “I learnt to binge drink early and this was common amongst my friends,” Kate reveals. “By 28, I was drinking a lot at home and had isolated myself. I went to rehab and started working through the underlying issues. I can now drink but prefer to drink less.” Kate’s turbulent journey with alcohol and the lack of delicious non-alcoholic beverages on the market led her to starting Etota. “I wanted something I could enjoy on a Saturday afternoon,” she says. “I was trying a few different drinks from my local grocer, but I couldn’t find a natural non-alcoholic drink that would last in the fridge after one glass.” Etota, which is handcrafted and bottled by hand in Tyagarah, is inspired by the Italian aperitivo (aka, a pre-dinner drink intended to whet the appetite). This ruby-red sipper has a sharp tang from ingredients gentian (used in Campari and Aperol) and schisandra, a restrained sweetness from grape juice and strawberry, and a dreamy depth from beetroot – it’s the perfect blend of sweet and bitter. “When first sipped it tastes sweet and then transitions into a bitter flavour on the tongue,” Kate says.

Kate says the easiest ways to enjoy Etota is on ice with a dash of lemon, mixed with soda or tonic water (add a garnish of orange peel for an extra dose of flavour), or if you’re drinking, paired with gin. “There are so many ways to drink it and this is a great point of difference for us – offering drinkers choice.” With one year now under their belts, Kate says they’re looking into trialling some new products in the new year. “The plan is to keep the same flavour, but create a family of products from this primary profile for drinkers and non-drinkers (e.g., a non-alcoholic canned spritz or an alcoholic gin and tequila).” @DRINKETOTA
