Create your own vision board

When asked to style a home, Interior Stylist Kylie Tyrrell, considers many factors. Plus, discover her favourite visual tool and #1 source of inspiration.

What do you love about using Style Sourcebook to create a vision board? I love how easy it is to use, it’s fun and the end product looks amazing. It really allows me to use and show my creativity.

PHOTOGRAPHY: SISTER SCOUT

How would you describe your home style? My style is hard to define – it’s essentially about using a neutral base with lots of colour. Art is so important to me and I love crisp white walls and timber flooring. If I had to define it, I’d say my style is eclectic because I love mixing things up, using old and new pieces.

How important is a vision board in keeping to a certain style? A vision board helps my clients and I to stay focused. With so much choice on offer, it’s so important to know what you like and more importantly, what you don’t like. So, we’re always coming back to our vision boards throughout the process. The vision board also acts as an interpretation tool. It makes the process of styling much easier when I can visually understand my client’s requests. Where do you start when creating a vision board? Usually, I like to ask the client for some things they love – that is a style or colour. I then spend some time getting to know the client, how they live and what the space looks and feels like currently. From there I generally have a good idea of what the client is trying to achieve. Which room should you start in if you’re planning a whole-house revamp? I love starting in the main living space, that is the kitchen and family/living room. This is where you maximise impact and also get the biggest bang for your buck. Some of my other favourite spaces to

Where do you find home styling inspiration yourself? I love using Instagram as a creative inspiration tool. And I love a great interiors book or magazine! Trade shows, showrooms, and product launches within the industry also inspire me greatly, but my favourite source of inspiration is travel. work on are the entrance, powder room and the master bedroom – you can really have some fun in these spaces if you put your mind to it. How easy is it to use Style Sourcebook and how do our readers get access? It’s probably one of the easiest tools I have used and the more I use it, the more I discover. I love that I can inject my brands’ personality into every board I create, and they are easy to share with clients. 10 design tips to live by ACCORDING TO

Dani Wales

The process of designing a home isn’t so much about how you want it to look, but how you want it to feel according to interior design expert, former contestant on The Block, co-host of Healthy Homes Australia and owner of Red Door Project, Dani Wales. Discover her 10 essential design tips and find your ‘why’ behind the design.

Colour trends Don’t think too literally about how you should use and apply “trend colours”. On-trend colours could be incorporated in other areas of the space through internal joinery, decorative items, artwork, soft furnishings, and more.

Let there be light Window furnishings should be considered as early as possible if you’re building or renovating and are just as important as all the other fittings in your home. Window furnishings create softness, movement, warmth, and light diffusion, and help to finish the overall space.

Create personality Finding inspiration Creating a home is about designing a space that reflects your personality and celebrates you! And magazines, Pinterest and the likes are great referencing points to gain inspiration.

We love the use of plants and art to really bring personality out in a space. Find pieces that speak to you and invoke a sense of “you’ness”.

A nod to tradition Consider reinstating period features and elements back into the home when redesigning, renovating or even redecorating.

All in the layers

DIY ambiance

Create colour and depth through layering in your bedroom – this is the space you want to feel the most relaxed in, where you want to feel that you are escaping the world – so it should reflect a space that can be considered your sanctuary.

Lighting: it’s not about illuminating a space, it’s about creating an ambiance and correct use of functional lighting.

Real vs faux There are misconceptions out there that natural stone automatically costs more than reconstituted stone.

P lan ahead For spatial planning and functionality purposes, work with a home and lifestyle organisation expert to really understand what you have, what you need, and why you need it.

This isn’t always the case. Explore this with your designer or stone supplier. Who wouldn’t prefer a natural stone over the faux stone?

The colour palette of your bedroom should be reflected in your artwork. Furthermore, a white frame is always a crisp

and practical choice as it doesn’t crowd the room and shrink the space.

“There’s a smorgasbord of choices out there when it comes to frames. We have a huge variety of different timber choices and colours, including that of our very own Australian hardwood. Consumers can feel good about their purchase knowing that our timber is sourced from sustainably-managed forests!” Melissa says.

Be sure to include task lighting in your bedroom styling, as well as your guest bedroom. There’s nothing worse than getting comfy and having to turn the main switch off!

When designing a child’s bedroom, Melissa Gullifer reminds us to look for functional pieces that offer practical storage solutions, as well as aesthetics. #twobirdsonestone What are the important factors to consider when choosing a big bed? “Go for beds that come with storage drawers. That way you don’t have to worry about keeping the dust off when you shove things under the bed. Built-in storage drawers provide loads of storage for bedding, clothes, sheets or blankets. It’s a smart choice and great design for small-to-medium size bedrooms,” Melissa says. In saying that, while practicality is important in a little one’s bedroom, focus should also be placed on choosing a bed that they’ll be able to grow into as Melissa explains. “We all want functional furniture to store those pesky toys that we end up tripping over every night, but we also want superb comfort, quality design and an amazing looking bedroom to enjoy for years to come.”

How beautiful is this Hamptonsstyle bed with timber accents?

D I D Y O U K N O W that, aside from the kitchen, the master bedroom is the second most sought-after space for potential home-buyers? “It’s becoming more common for homeowners to spend money on transforming their bedrooms into a relaxing and pleasurable space to unwind. With our busy lifestyles, the trend continues to invest our time and energy into making our bedrooms the most relaxing spaces in the house,” Melissa says.

Build a better

sleep pattern

After a blissful night's sleep? Choosing the right pillow can make a world of difference.

WRITTEN BY JODIE THOMSON, HOME BEAUTIFUL FOR BEVMARKS Ever woken up stiff and tired? With a sore neck or a headache? Or maybe you’ve wondered why you have such a restful night’s sleep in a five-star hotel? The answer might be your pillow. The wrongsized pillow for your body size, or one that’s worn out or in poor condition, can have an enormous impact on the quality of your sleep, and your back and neck health. We spend big on comfy mattresses, beautiful bedlinen and decorating details, but often fail to consider the quality of the surfaces on which we lay our heads. Most people would be surprised to learn that the most commonly purchased pillow, the standard synthetic pillow, should be replaced every 6 to 24 months. Beyond that, they tend to go lumpy and flat and carry a build-up of dust and allergens. But if you’re buying new, how do you work out what’s right for you? High, low or contoured? Feather, down, polyester, latex or wool? Your first decision needs to be what type of pillow material to go for. There’s a vast range, from natural products like comfy feather and luxurious down to high-tech resilient foams. The quality also varies largely within each material type, so personal preference for a particular feel plays a big part.

You can find Bevmarks on Level 1 at Nunawading Homemaker HQ

Choosing your perfect pillow WOOL Wool pillows offer great resilience and softness, plus they absorb moisture effectively.

L AT E X Latex pillows are 100 per cent natural and sustainable, offering long-lasting firmness and resilience. For a little bit of luxury, try our Latex Dual Contour Pillow!

F E AT H E R A N D D O W N The appeal of a feather or a down pillow is the natural softness and squish. Usually taken from duck or geese, feather and down offer good support. Feather is usually heavier and cheaper, while down offers superior softness and is more expensive.

FOAM Foam pillows offer resilience and are a great option for those looking for extra support. The most popular kind of foam pillow is memory foam, like our Smart Foam Pillow, that has a visco-elastic polyurethane material with a gel-like feel. Sensitive to temperature, memory foam adjusts and forms to a head’s shape and pressure to distribute weight evenly.

P O LY E S T E R The biggest selling pillows are polyester, made from a variety of man-made synthetic fillings. Polyester pillows are generally a popular choice because they are inexpensive and can be easily washed. Not all polyesters are the same though, and the density of fill in each pillow affects the feel and firmness. Brands such as Jasper and Herington, Denton’s and Eco Active have various blends that can lend themselves to a firmer cushioning or one that can be moulded, similar to a feather pillow. It’s up to your personal preference!

Curate your autumn winter wardrobe with Howards Storage World organisation expert, Cathy Player.

W H AT I S Y O U R # 1 O R G A N I S AT I O N H A C K ? Target unused space! For example, if there’s airspace in your wardrobe under your t-shirts, then install a double hang rack to win back the use of that space. Likewise, putting tubs with lids on the top shelf enables you to utilise the space on top of tubs for additional storage. You always have more space than you think if you use it wisely.

W H AT I S Y O U R FAV O U R I T E STORAGE PRODUCT? Without a doubt my favourite product is the Elfa shelving system. It might be a little more expensive, but it’s made from epoxy bonded steel with a 10 year guarantee and designed to give you total control over your space. The system is super strong and the design is flexible enough to accommodate changing needs. With only the top track attaching to the wall, your options are endless. Plus, you can spec it up with specialty components like gliding drawer racks and timber finishes as your budget allows. 10/10!

Season chicken breasts before cutting a pocket in the side for filling. Stuff with goat’s cheese and sundried tomatoes and place in air fryer. Cook at 180 degrees for 20 minutes.

Place salmon fillets in air fryer, before pouring sweet chilli and diced spring onion over the top. Marinate using your hands and cook in air fryer at 200 degrees for ten minutes.

Brown shanks in a saucepan until skin is slightly crispy then place in air fryer. Cover with soup and can of diced tomatoes and cook in air fryer at 200 degrees for two hours.

Step 1 Bring saucepan to a medium heat and melt chocolate and butter (or coconut oil), before spooning into a mixing bowl. Set the melted chocolate aside to cool for a few minutes. Step 2 Add all remaining ingredients except the nuts and stir until mixed. Step 3 Pour the batter into a small greased baking dish lined with parchment paper (no bigger than 4×6 inches). Step 4 Top with finely chopped peanuts. Place in the refrigerator to chill. Step 5 When the batter is set, cut into small squares with a sharp knife. Remember, keep these and all treats small – no more than 3x3 cm squares. Enjoy!
