Rebecca Lawrence of Bulimba Business and Love Your Local Markets says the day the RSL announced it couldn’t fund Bulimba Festival this year, she found herself encouraged by friends and businesses to take on the project and she was thrilled to have been approached. “It was a great response and I’m very excited to take on the task. I’m completely reinventing it. It became a massive market, attracting 100,000 people, but I saw this as an opportunity to be able to showcase more of Bulimba’s foodie culture.” Rebecca, a local herself, says she wants locals, community groups and businesses to want to

come along, rather than avoiding the area, due to road blocks and streets jam-packed with people and market stalls. She wants to inject the Bulimba spirit back into the Bulimba Festival. She says the revitalized Bulimba Festival will now span one week in November, with a focus on what Bulimba does best: food! She says Oxford Street will remain open with the markets placed around the park on the Sunday. There will be multiple spin-off side events during the week, including pop-up events, fashion shows, progressive dinners, laneway food truck events, celebrity authors at Riverbend Books and

screenings at the Cineplex. “The whole festival culminates on the Sunday for a food and wine festival in the park. Cluster; Known as the ‘ice pick headache’ due its severity of pain in one eye. Possible symptoms include red and watery eyes, runny or congested nose, or swollen or drooping eyelids. I’m thrilled Grant has created his own second chance both inside and outside his sport. As they say, “everyone deserves one”. He is looking better than before, he has found love again, a real appreciation of his network of family and friends and he seems as clear headed as he needs to be for the training he is about to endure. The trouble legendary swimmers face is similar to cricketers up to the mid 90s – they have high profiles, yet relatively little money when they finish. Also, after a magnificent career in the pool, many young swimmers are left feeling lost and helpless upon retirement. Over the last century, we have seen a high suicide rate in first class cricket – I hope the swimming industry won’t follow this trend. Grant has felt all this, swum out of his disciplined lane for a while and, now, at a more appropriate retirement age can do it again and get it right. Maintaining a balance can be a challenge when striving for split second excellence, but this time around I’m confident he will be more aware of keeping the scales in check.

Pearls are a staple ingredient to any racing outfit and age is no barrier – from the young at heart to racing royalty, as Jackie Kennedy said, “pearls are always appropriate”. Whatever your outfit, a classic white pearl strand is perfect. For the more flamboyant, pearls mixed with semi precious, milifiori, cloisonné or jet stones make a lovely twist. Try to avoid spilling Champagne over your pearls when that boxed trifecta comes in, as alcohol and pearls don’t mix. by the freshness of the radish salad. And if you think all white meats taste like chicken, you must try the duck confit atop their caramelised onion pudding. I couldn’t help but polish off the entire dish, sautéed kale, pickled cauliflower and all! It is a misconception that varicose veins are more common in women than men. The fact is the prevalence is equal in both sexes. DIAMOND HEAD For all visitors to Oahu, the hike up Diamond Head is a must-try. This 760-foot extinct volcanic crater will take about an hour to reach the summit, but it’s well worth the wait for the jaw-dropping panoramic views of the island. After the hike, we made a stop by Dukes Bar for a well-deserved cocktail. It’s the place to be seen on Waikiki Beach – it was late afternoon and the place was pumping. This ‘barefoot bar’ has a great vibe and delicious cocktails, but if you’re willing to shop around you’ll find cheaper drinks elsewhere. When in Hawaii, make like the locals and indulge in the traditional Hawaiian dish ‘Loco Moco’ – white rice, hamburger patty, fried egg and gravy plus a choice of meat or seafood. After one-toomany Duke’s Mai Tai specials, this was the perfect hangover cure! EXPLORE THE REEF Our next stop was to be whisked up the beach to the Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort. This stunning hotel really was a highlight of my stay, offering a perfect location for exploring Oahu, stylemagazines.com.au

unobstructed views of Diamond Head and the 639 spacious rooms have all the luxuries you could ever need from complimentary Wi-Fi to 24-hour gym access. I kicked off the day with a taste of home at Bill Granger’s breakfast nook and trendiest café in town, ‘Bill’s’. This light and airy spot is inspired by local tropical produce, yet injects a laidback Aussie vibe into the local scene. Be sure to try the coffee and fresh squeezed juices for that Vitamin C hit! NORTH SHORE If you’re after that secluded island vibe, take an hour’s drive to the other side of Oahu to the North Shore – you won’t regret it. Not only is the drive picturesque (it reminded me slightly of country New Zealand), the beaches are unparalleled. I made a pit stop at Sunset Beach, home to pro surf competitions and known for its famous winter waves. Catching the tail end of the season, the water was fairly flat and perfect for stand up paddle boarding. Dotted along the beach you’ll find many food trucks, which are a quintessential part of Hawaiian culture and great for a post-surf bite.
