Hello! This month we take you on a culinary journey – we’ve searched in and around Brisbane to find hidden dining gems worth daydreaming about (a foodie road trip awaits on page 12!).
In this edition, we also feature two of Brisbane’s most passionate foodies, Pilloni’s Andrea Contin and Yoko’s Oscar Solomon, who share their love for food, giving us a glimpse inside their colourful lives.
We also showcase the business initiative of Good & Fugly, which aims to reduce food waste by giving ‘cosmeticallychallenged’ fresh produce a second chance. Learn how their efforts are not only sustainable but also economically beneficial for farmers and consumers alike. We love this!
And if you’re looking for a place to unwind after work, we’ve rounded up the newest spots for you to indulge in a glass or two of your favourite vino.
So, sit back, relax, and enjoy this edition of Style. We hope it inspires you to discover the many flavours that Brisbane and beyond has to offer.
TRACY SINCLAIR EDITORThere’s so much to devour in our Food Issue – from signature food and drink offerings to foodie precincts you have to visit. Oh, and there’s a fun read on Brisbane’s great sandwich renaissance (now, that’s a craze I’m here for – salad sandwich for one, please!).
Plus, inside you’ll find everything you need to know about Brisbane Racing Club’s iconic The Star Stradbroke Season, who are featured on our beautiful cover – Chevy was an absolute dream to work with.
On that note, dig in!
Gaby wears Significant Other Leilah Pant $280, Decjuba Loulou Ruffle Top $139.95, Ford Millinery London Baker Boy Cap $269.95, Lola Knight AdaSteeped in Italian tradition, but calling Brisbane home for almost 11 years, Andrea Contin is the mastermind behind not just one, but two trattorias based in West End.
Having grown up in Italy with a Sardinian mother and Venetian father, there’s no better person to bring authentic Italian culture and cuisine to Brisbane and that’s precisely what he did in 2017 with his partner, Valentina Vigni.
The pair opened La Lupa in September of that year and it’s no surprise, its immeasurable success led to another restaurant that opened in February this year – Pilloni is the new stunning Sardinianstyle restaurant at hand. It’s perched on Hardgrave Road and is all about a real cultural experience.
“There is so much of Sardinia in Pilloni, not just the food and the wine, but also in
the furniture,” Andrea says. “Although, the most authentic part is the concept – think of it as farm-to-table, but make it Italian. The majority of the restaurant’s produce is sourced from small producers, local growers, and sustainable hunters.”
La Lupa on the other hand is more casual than Pilloni. “It’s more like an everyday restaurant,” he says, adding some even say it has the best Cacio e Pepe in Brisbane!
When Andrea isn’t at the restaurants working away or mingling with customers, you’ll likely find him with Valentina, enjoying nature, walking their dogs, or feasting on a gourmet lunch in their backyard all afternoon long.
From red wine and focaccia to pappardelle and prosciutto, Andrea has played a major role in enriching our authentic offerings. So, if you haven’t booked in at La Lupa or Pilloni already, we strongly suggest you do!

Who said Brisbane city had to have the monopoly on fine dining? Get to know the breadth of culinary delights to be enjoyed from beyond the CBD.
By BETHAN WARRIORThis contemporary Asian restaurant and cocktail bar stands out for its delicious fusion of Thai and Indonesian flavours. Utilising locally-sourced products to create the most mouth-watering dishes, you can expect a relaxed, luxurious experience under the retracting rooftop – you’ll feel like you’re at a beach bar in Bali. Not to mention, the extensive cocktail menu has been specifically designed to complement the food!
Housed in a heritage-listed property on Given Terrace, this ingredient-driven venue delights every diner with its European flair and rich flavours. The aged brick walls and deep brown leather upholstery feels like a hidden Parisian gem, when in reality it’s only a short 15-minute drive out to Paddington! The relaxed, unpretentious approach to fine dining is highlighted in restaurant favourites such as their beetroot risotto and black onyx eye fillet.
Sweet tooths rejoice as we’ve found a goodie for you! A mere 30 minutes south of Brisbane, this hidden treasure in the suburb of Sunnybank celebrates the fine art of baking with exquisite detail. Meticulously hand crafting each dessert in store, this Japanese patisserie is inspired by its capital city, Tokyo. “Like the city itself, we endeavour to celebrate the beauty of both old and modern Japan by paying homage to traditional flavours and confections, in concert with more familiar and contemporary desserts known and loved today.”
With a name like that, you can just imagine the smoky aromas of charcoal-clad foods ruminating around this venue. The multi-sensory experience to be found in this intimate, mood-lit restaurant brings all the joys of cooking with fire. Known for their custom-made fire pit and flame grill, menu favourites include small delights such as gently smoked butter, all the way up to their signature dry-aged Stockyard OP beef. And you can’t go wrong with a whiskey pairing from their superior collection.
This Sunshine Coast eatery observes a produce-first approach when it comes to food, where owners Jack and Jess truly champion every grower and farmer they are in partnership with. As such, their menu changes weekly, sometimes daily making for a unique experience with every visit, however current menu highlights include the whipped feta and Eumundi tomatoes as well as the saffron roasted quail. A venue that is specifically designed for guests to relax and revel in balmy Queensland days, the freshness of produce is only matched by the freshness experienced with an afternoon spent at Bask.
Nestled amongst a charming country town, this romantic venue brings an elegant degustation menu to the Scenic Rim. Blume, a nod to Boonah’s original name of ‘Blumbergville’, pays homage to the local area in every dish, as homegrown produce reigns supreme at this venue. Providing an intimate experience with only 20 seats available, you can enjoy the heritage building complemented by the simple décor and a bouquet of wildflowers on each table. Head chef and owner Jack Stuart evokes a sense of time and place in his menu, rebuffing foodie trends and pretentious design, opting instead for a relaxed and memorable destination dinner.
Set atop the glorious mountain view of Spicers Peak Lodge, their on-site restaurant has become a regional staple for locals and out-of-towners alike. A true destination-dining experience, while you may feel whisked away to another atmosphere, dinner here is a wonderful journey through quintessential Australian flavours –“the kitchen raises a triumphant flag to the heart and soul of our country, and the central narrative of celebrating the best Australia has to offer cleverly informs the food experience. Dishes such as Red Gum Lamb Rack, Kangaroo Island Marron and Abrohlos Island Scallops are illustrative of the approach and style,” the restuarant writes on its website.
This family-run restaurant is the epitome of home-style cooking with a fine dining flair. Essen, meaning ‘to eat’ in German, commemorates the joy of family meals and you can sense how every dish is made with love. This quaint and rustic venue, donned in greenery and cosy table settings, has an ever-evolving set menu that puts the best of the Granite Belt Region on display. Current highlights on the menu include their roasted mushroom and hazelnut focaccia, as well as the kingfish crudo with roast garlic toum.
With a dedicated following, Parisian fashion house CELINE epitomises the latest fashion idiom – one that has its roots in classic, understated confidence –and it’s coming to Brisbane this month. CELINE
If ever there was a label to take you beyond the banal act of getting dressed, it has got to be CELINE. Founded in Paris in 1945 by Céline Vipiana, the iconic Maison may have dropped its accent some five years ago, though remains a luxury label marked by French ‘it-girl’ status – the brand’s blueprint defined by impeccable design, effortless silhouettes, and a quiet luxury offering.
A symbol of modernism and sophistication, CELINE (owned by the LVMH group since 1996) is a brand that is forever introducing us to items we didn’t know we needed but now can’t live without in a way that feels organic, free of force and brash commercialisation. A fashion House seeped in an idea as simple as it sounds: looking polished by dressing subtly, simply, and in an effortless way that exudes luxury without the obvious markers. Just simple logos, neutral shades, and classic tailoring. More polished than normcore and softer in structure than minimalism, CELINE’s artistic and creative director Hedi Slimane (who dropped the accent in 2018 and is known for famously cutting ‘Yves’ from ‘Yves Saint Laurent’ in 2012), has continued to bring simplicity to the forefront in a way that’s equally fresh, new, and timeless all at once, without bowing to trend cycles, fads, or momentary hype.
And it is this inconspicuous effect – that of the no-fuss aesthetic which resonates with the modern day woman – that draws you in. In essence, CELINE is hallmarked by well-made staples that don’t shout their provenance, instead quietly communicates a low-key, but undeniably high-end, inclination of unfussiness, and Brisbane is the latest city privy to experience that status.
In anticipation of CELINE’s first foray into Brisbane with a pop-up store in QueensPlaza from 18 May to 12 July, the French fashion House will showcase a range of leather goods and accessories ready for purchase. Sitting alongside a cluster of prolific luxury houses including Chanel, Fendi, Bvlgari, and Dior, this is an obvious step in the right direction for the Parisian label, whose only presence in Queensland consists of a concession store in David Jones at Pacific Fair on the Gold Coast. Though with the highly-anticipated Queen’s Wharf opening set for late 2023 and LVMH securing 16 free-standing stores within, it would be fair to say a permanent placement within our city is not completely out of the realm.
Now, in its modern era with Slimane at the helm, CELINE continues to remind us of the eternally cool power of Parisian style – a put together effortlessness, a visceral embodiment of the French term, je ne sais quoi – perfectly carried by the likes of Dree Hemmingway and Kaia Gerber with their innate sense of nonchalance and charisma; as quietly confident in a pair of wellfitting trousers and oversized shirt as in a backless silk dress with a black leather Triomphe slung over her shoulder. Such is the power of simplicity.
From the book shelf to the television, Daisy Jones And The Six isn’t just making us want to be a rockstar, it’s making us want to dress like one too.
By OLIVIA ASHWORTHCostume-like nostalgia and modern glamour, let your style turn back this season with 70s rock culture that doesn’t skip a beat.
Think miniskirts, shearling coats, cowboy boots, flare jeans, and plenty of bell sleeves...
Ah, the humble wide-leg jean, a fashion staple beloved for its versatility and timelessness. Discover four new ways to reimagine your favourite denim basic to capture this season’s trends!
By BETHAN WARRIORRomantic, dreamy, and wistful, lavender is set to be the ‘it’ colour for the upcoming winter season. Add a touch to your wardrobe, beauty routine, and home décor pieces.

It’s hard to escape the sandwich mania gripping Brisbane with countless delis opening their doors to feed hungry locals.
By ERIN SIMPSONWhat makes a truly great sandwich? We asked Brisbane’s top sandwich connoisseurs how to master the art of creating the perfect sanga. Making great sandwiches is their bread and butter, after all.
Why do you think there’s been a sandwich resurgence in Brisbane recently?
Sandwiches are great, chefs get to experiment with different types of bread, fillings, and condiments. The sandwich trend has been popular over the past few years in Sydney and Melbourne. Recently, Brisbane has picked up on changing food trends and locals are craving the sense of nostalgia that sandwiches provide.
What’s your favourite sandwich on offer at Ham on Rye?
The Tuna Fresh. It’s fresh, clean, and crunchy with a generous and creamy tuna mixture. It’s a perfect option for a quick, healthy, and satisfying lunch.
What’s the most important ingredient in creating the perfect sandwich?
It’s about finding the perfect ratio, size of bread, right amount of sauce, and ensuring the sandwich is not dry, not too saucy, not too meaty, etc. Finding the balance for some of our sandwiches to ensure the cheese is perfectly melted, but the bread isn’t too toasted. Consistency is key.
What makes your sandwiches unique? We carefully develop our own recipes based on the classics we all know and love. What really makes our sandwiches is passion, dedication, and attention to detail which we put into every one.
@HAMONRYEDELI
Why do you think there’s been a sandwich resurgence in Brisbane recently?
During Covid lockdowns, ‘grab and go’ food became a necessity. We found toasties were a really good way to provide people with tasty food that was quick, easy to eat anywhere, and tasted great!
What’s your favourite sandwich on offer at Toastbuds?
The classic Ham & Cheese! We usually add a few twists like adding pickles, and mustard and dill seared into the crust. Nothing beats the nostalgia of a trusty ham amd cheese sanga!
What’s the most important ingredient in creating the perfect toasted sandwich? Mayonnaise on the outside. Using mayonnaise allows us to increase the cooking temperature and get the best sear possible!
What makes your sandwiches unique?
Our motto is ‘simple stuff, done well’. We try to focus on making sure every toastie we produce is balanced by ensuring it has a little kick of sweetness and acidity to cut through that delicious gooey cheese!
@TOASTBUDS_
If you’re after authentic French food, look no further than La Belle Vie in Bardon.
Good food, good wine, and good service, what more could you want from your favourite French restaurant and bar? Oh, and did we mention there’s a stunning view overlooking the lush landscapes of Bardon? Say bonjour to La Belle Vie. French for ‘the beautiful life’, we were recently treated to a three-course lunch at this delightful establishment, and boy were we impressed!
Now in its third year of business, La Belle Vie, which is run by French-born Simon Lambert and Behrooz Farahnakian, is already leading the way in the Brisbane fine dining scene. French classics like crème brûlée and French fries grace the menu, wine bottles line the walls, while soft music plays in the background. All in all, it’s a French masterpiece you have to try. Here’s what we ate...
To start, we were served three delectable entrées; La Selection, Saint-Jacques, and Courgette (which was, surprisingly, quite the standout for us). The first dish consisted of three main ingredients – pan-seared scallop, toast of foie gras (duck liver), and garlic butter baked mussel. Meanwhile, Saint-Jacques was made up of pan-seared scallops, beetroot coulis, pineapple and coriander dressing, and crispy prosciutto – the flavours all complemented and worked wonderfully together. And lastly, the third dish was made up of zucchini marinated and grilled à la provençale and in tartar-style infused with fine herbs and goat cheese – the perfect meal cleanser thanks to its freshness!
Next up on the menu was Canard, which was pan-fried duck breast marinated in honey and rosemary, paired with roasted pistachio,
Pont-Neuf sweet potatoes, sautéed lardon, and brussels sprouts which added a sweet flavour to the overall taste. We also sampled a dish named Poisson, which was made up of pan-fried snapper, paired perfectly with capers and lemon noisette butter, croutons, fennel, rocket, and citrus supremês – when we say the fish was so tender it melted in your mouth, we mean it!
The last dish was probably one of our favourites – White Pyrenees lamb in two ways, a braised shoulder estouffade (a Southern French stew of meat) and a grilled cutlet on capsicum relish with roast potatoes. We loved dipping the complimentary homemade bread into the leftover sauce!
As for dessert, there’s plenty of sweet treats to choose from, such as the Crème Brûlée, Fondant, which was made up of melted chocolate cake and artisanal cherry ice cream, and Le gourmand, a selection of crème brûlée, chocolate fondant, vanilla ice cream, Chantilly cream, and candied almond – delish!
And you can’t head to La Belle Vie without sipping on some delicious French wine. White wine? We’d recommend choosing Sancerre, Anthony Girard Domaine La Clef du Récit. Rather a red wine with your meal? The Médoc Cru Bourgeois, Château Côtes De Blaignan is divine. And it wouldn’t be a visit without sampling some champagne too! We’d recommend the Palmer Brut Réserve. On that note, grab your best gals or partner, and dig into some French culinary faves! La Belle Vie is open Tuesday-Saturday for lunch and dinner.
Daytime dining made easy at Everton Park Shopping Centre.
Whether you’re after a snack on the go, catching up with friends, or looking for a quick bite on your lunch break, we’ve rounded up all the best eateries Everton Park Shopping Centre has to offer – PS, don’t read on an empty stomach!
They’ve been dominating the healthy burger game for almost 20 years, and for good reason. Not only are their burgers made from the freshest local ingredients, but they taste amazing too! They also have a whole section on their menu dedicated to plant-based options. So, what will you be ordering? We’ve got our eye on the Sweet Chilli Chicken burger, with a side of their famous hot chips, of course!
If you’re after an authentic Mediterranean-style lunch, look no further than Vito’s Espresso Bar. The modern Italian café serves up some classics like gourmet burgers and wraps, toasties, veggie brekky stacks, and avo on toast, however you can also order Italian favourites like Tagliatelle Alla Bolognese and Pesto Chicken Gnocchi (they also have a gnocchi brekky option if you’re game!). Best part? Their breakfast and lunch menus are available all day long – because fluffy buttermilk pancakes at 12pm have never sounded better!
Is street-style Mexican food your jam? Be sure to add Burrito Bar to your mustvisit lunch spots the next time you dine at Everton Park Shopping Centre. By ERIN SIMPSON1 . I’m particularly fond of dining at Rosmarino in Brisbane. The wine list is incredible, plus the owners are a young Italian-Australian couple and I love supporting fellow young people in hospitality.
2 . My latest obsession is the Birkenstock Boston shearling-lined clogs. As soon as the temperature drops below 25 degrees, I don’t take these off my feet.
3 . Being a baker, I’m most inspired by Paris and New York. I recommend visiting Angelina Teahouse in Paris for a step back in time and Levain Bakery in New York for the most delicious chocolate chip walnut cookies.
4 . If there’s one thing, I could eat every day for the rest of my life it would be our Brooki Bakehouse NYC Cookies – they’re just that good. They’re a very well-balanced cookie, not too sweet, the perfect crunchy exterior, and a soft gooey centre.
5 . I won’t go anywhere without my Caudalie Beauty Elixir, Shiseido Eye Cream, and Dr Dennis Gross resurfacing wipes. And since we’re here, the Imbibe Miracle Collagen is in my coffee every day.

Firstly, how did you come up with the name Good & Fugly?
We wanted something fun, irreverent, and something people would remember. Good & Fugly does the trick! And while we’re the first to call imperfect, unwanted fruit and veg ‘fugly’, people get that we mean it with love!
Talk us through how Good & Fugly came to fruition?
I have a history of building sustainable brands. When I discovered 25 per cent of Australian produce never even leaves the farm, I was blown away. I learned there were successful business models overseas that were fighting the problem and we launched Good & Fugly to do the same in Australia. Good & Fugly is a social enterprise on a mission to fight food waste by rescuing imperfect and surplus produce rejected by supermarkets. We deliver this produce in curated, seasonal boxes to consumers’ doors.
What are some stats about the produce industry that would surprise our readers?
• In Australia alone we throw away 3.1 million tonnes of food – that’s 17,000 jumbo jets (747s)
• Since 70 per cent of the world’s fresh water is used for agriculture, that’s 180 trillion litres of water
• 20 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions are methane. Wasted food in landfills contributes to the total of this powerful heat-trapping gas
• 30 per cent of all the world’s farmland is used to produce wasted food
Tell us about the process and how the customer benefits from receiving your boxes: One of the most consistent pieces of feedback we’ve gotten from our customers is that Good & Fugly delivers surprise and delight. We love this because we didn’t expect it and people are reporting that we’ve changed not only how they approach food waste, but how much more fruit and veg they’re eating. We’ve also been surprised by how much they love helping farmers by using us. It’s also worth mentioning that because we
deal directly with many of our farmers, there’s a good chance that what’s in your box today was picked yesterday – that won’t be true in supermarkets where it could be weeks between harvest and arriving on the shelf.
Good & Fugly launched in Brisbane this year, what made you want to expand here and how’s it going so far?
We have always been committed to growing in Brisbane because we know that Queenslanders love their fresh fruit and veg, love the affordability we offer, and we know so many Queensland farmers are struggling with the supermarket aesthetic standards.
What does the future hold for Good & Fugly? We are always looking at how to make the experience better for our customers and our farmers. This means finding delicious and nutritious ways —including products— to make a bigger impact on the massive amount of fugly food waste in Australia. So, watch this space!

Emma Stallworthy knows all too well what it’s like to juggle work, parenting, and life’s time restraints. After discovering a love for home workouts, Emma, a qualified instructor who owned and operated six reformer Pilates studios throughout Melbourne with her husband, wanted to make reformer Pilates more accessible for others. After doing some research and realising there was a gap in the market for easy-to-use, studio-quality reformer beds, Your Reformer was born. Your Reformer is now one of the country’s leading reformer Pilates suppliers for at-home practice. We spoke to Emma to learn more about their stylish and affordable beds – trust us when we say they’re the chicest reformer beds you’ll ever come across!
How did Your Reformer come about? Having run a chain of gyms with reformer studios, we already knew there was a growing desire for reformer Pilates. Then hit Covid, lockdowns, and the shifting priority of convenience and at-home workouts. As a new mum, I felt first-hand how hard it can be to find time for myself and keep consistent with workouts. Having a bed at home was a game changer for me, and we knew that there were so many others who would love this too. But unless you were an instructor, reformers at home just weren’t a thing. We saw the gap in the market, knew it was something we were incredibly passionate about and so YR began.
At-home reformers are starting to slowly pop up everywhere. What sets Your Reformer apart from others?
For our at-home customers [we also sell to studios!], our beds are commercial quality and they look beautiful. We put a high priority on customer service too! We want all of our customers to feel supported and part of our community. And finally, we’re the full studio solution thanks to our fantastic OnDemand app, which is tailored to all customers.
Why are more people opting to invest in reformer beds?
Having a reformer bed at home, along with classes to keep you motivated and challenged, means that you’re more consistent. I know firsthand how hard it is to make studio class times.
Having a bed at home is also a great money saver, and gives you a ‘me time’ sanctuary. Plus, we have workouts that range from 15 minutes all the way through to one hour, so you can fit in a quick one if that’s all you have time for. Not to mention, a regular Pilates practice comes with a slew of health benefits, including mental clarity, improved strength, flexibility, and posture, and helps prevent injuries.
Can you tell me a little more about the OnDemand app?
When we developed Your Reformer, we wanted to be able to bring the studio experience into your home and make our product a full solution. So, we invested heavily into our OnDemand
app, which now comes with over 350 workouts, ranging in length, difficulty, and focus (we have even partnered with physiotherapists). Our app is included free with any rental bed. Meanwhile, those who purchase a bed receive the first three months complimentary.
What feedback have you received from customers?
Our feedback from customers has been so wonderful and humbling. They love everything we hoped they would – the ultimate convenience of having the bed in their homes, the quality and beauty of them, as well as our class offerings. One thing we love reading in our reviews is how our customers’ partners and kids are embracing Pilates too.
Tips for reformer Pilates beginners: Don’t underestimate it, but don’t be afraid either. Most exercises have their own starting point that can then progress from there. I think that’s another reason people fall in love with reformer, because you can keep challenging yourself week in, week out, no matter how long you’ve been practicing Pilates for.

Turns out, there are many unexpected ways to enjoy coffee. I love playing with coffee in food, because who says it can’t be enjoyed at breakfast, lunch, or dinner?
I like to create flavourful (plus caffeinated!) rubs for meats. A rub with ground specialty coffee and your own concoction of herbs and spices such as paprika, cumin, garlic, or chilli is great for adding a caramelised crust to any grilled meats. Another favourite is adding some cold brew to your barbecue by making a coffee marinade. This is a simple way to add a rich depth of flavour to any cut of meat.
The ideas don’t stop there! What about turning the marinade into something butter-like and slathering it on everything – yum. Or what about turning it into a coffee jam? Great for glazing roasted ham.
For those who have a sweet tooth, you can turn coffee, like Wolff’s Cold Brew, into so many amazing desserts too. Options are, and aren’t limited to, peanut butter coffee waffles, cardamom coffee cake, coffee cookies, espresso glazed donuts etc. My personal favourite? Piping hot fudge sauce with coffee or traditional tiramisu.
May has arrived, which means it’s time to take a deep dive into the history of a new gemstone. For those Taurus babies, we’re taking a look at your stunning birthstone: emerald – green, vibrant, and luxurious, this alluring gem works in just about any jewellery piece. Rings, bracelets, necklaces, and earrings – there’s something so elevating and striking about emerald jewellery. Here are some of the fun facts we found about this popular gemstone:
• They were first mined by the ancient Egyptians
• Cleopatra had a well-known love for emeralds
• The name ‘emerald’ comes from the Greek word ‘smaragdus’, which means ‘green gem’
• In ancient Greece and Rome, emerald was said to be the gemstone of the goddess Venus, who was associated with love and beauty
• Emeralds are among the most difficult stones to cut. So, there you have it, emeralds are one of history’s most ancient treasures. LEONARD JOEL 201 LATROBE TCE, PADDINGTON, TROY MCKENZIE P 0412 997 080 LEONARDJOEL.COM.AU

Out of the dozens of character strengths one might possess, humour has been my number one signature strength for my entire life. I have always enjoyed laughing by myself or with others, as well as good-natured teasing. Bringing smiles to other people has been important for me. I take my professional roles seriously, yet seeing the light side of situations, and making jokes can be helpful, especially in the trying times.
Laughter draws people together and triggers healthy physical and emotional bodily changes. It strengthens your immune system, elevates mood, diminishes pain, increases positivity, and protects you from the damaging effects of anxiety and stress. Laughter enhances the intake of oxygen-rich air, stimulates your heart, lungs, and muscles, and increases the feel-good neurotransmitters that are released in your brain. Watch comedies, have fun with friends, tell jokes, look for the lighter side of life, and remember that laughter really is the best medicine!
DR JOHN BARLETTA, CORPORATE PSYCHOLOGIST JOHNBARLETTA.COMIf your work means you stand for most of the day, you’ve probably noticed your legs feel heavy and in some cases painful come home time. A large number of teachers, hairdressers, and builders seek treatment due to long hours on their feet.
If you’re reading this and thinking why? Prolonged periods of standing causes the blood in the legs to pool further down. Mostly this is because the vein valves that pump blood back to the heart are battling the down force of gravity. If the valves are not strong enough, then the blood doesn’t get back to your heart. Calf muscles are also instrumental in helping the valves open and shut. As you walk the muscles facilitate a pump action to push the blood up the leg.
Standing alone is not the only cause of varicose veins, however those with a predisposition for venous disease may find that the excessive stress from the blood pooling over time exasperates the valves and causes the veins to become distended.
So, what can you do? Try to alternate between sitting and standing throughout the day, move as much as possible to maintain circulation in the legs, and walk if you can during breaks. Other helpful tips include following a healthy lifestyle (obesity is a significant risk factor for varicose veins) and wearing compression (socks and stockings now come in a wide variety of styles and colours). Class one is fine if you do not have a family history of varicose veins, otherwise look towards class two therapy.
In the folds of fabric lies a subtle power, one capable of guiding our appetites towards either sustenance or indulgence. Recent studies unveiled a phenomenon coined ‘clothes-food congruence’, an intricate dance of sartorial decisions that mould our preference for healthy or unhealthy foods.
The choice of clothing cultivates a micro-environment, an intimate world shaping the wearer’s tendencies. Elegant attire begets self-control and organisation, traits harmonious with wholesome eating. Meanwhile, informal garments summon a spirit of playfulness and leisure, resonating with less healthy indulgences.
In unearthing the link between wardrobe and nourishment, researchers have embroidered a fresh narrative within the existing chronicle of cognition and clothes psychology. Their findings enrich the theory of enclothed cognition, suggesting that our attire not only controls our psyche and actions, but the mere act of envisioning oneself swathed in specific styles wields a tangible influence.
It appears that the threads of our apparel may as well weave a tapestry of wellness, or perhaps vice, ultimately dictating the choices that we make on our journey through the culinary landscape.
From hors d’oeuvres and canapés to popcorn boxes and macaroon towers, the options are limitless when it comes to the food you can serve at your event. Food is something that creates conversation, instils memories, and reflects the style of event you’re hosting. From festivals that circulate annually around delicacies and dishes, to the eruption of the food truck phenomenon, the event industry is as much about food as it is about styling.
Think about your furniture choices to reflect the food you’ll be serving. Dry bars and stools for assistance with beverages and plates, or lower pallet furniture for a picnic-style event.
Don’t forget to also theme your food! Tacos for a Mexican carnival will mix in well among faux cacti with bright fiesta fans overhead. Nostalgic finger food will be a cause for laughter at a 70s space race themed party with aliens and NASA-dressed party guests. With its fascinating history, remarkable landscapes, mouthwatering food, robust culture, and generous people, Vietnam is a country that’s both alive with energy and deeply rooted in tradition. Somehow, Vietnam is both intriguing and exhilarating. It’s steeped its past, yet also firmly focused on the future. It’s often overlooked as a destination – overshadowed by the likes of Thailand and Indonesia–but for those in the know, Vietnam packs a dizzying punch as a travel destination for those seeking both relaxation and adventure in equal measures. And while northern Vietnam makes plenty of noise amongst travellers, it’s the southern end of the country where I truly fell in love with this southeast Asian pocket of the world. Here’s how I spent 10 days in vibrant Vietnam.
By COURTNEY FRANKNestled in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City (though I’m told by hotel Brand Manager, Duc, that some locals still prefer to call it Saigon), we begin at the first Vietnamese hotel located inside a shopping centre – Fusion Original Saigon Centre. The urban oasis provides a welcome reprieve from the hustle and bustle of the Saigon streets, and with a focus on fashion, architecture, and design, it’s safe to say I felt right at home here. For Fusion Hotel Group it was important to present a hotel experience that blended old and new, which is apt considering Vietnam is a complex country that juxtaposes a rich (albeit problematic history) with vibrant culture and personality. And Fusion embodies this sentiment perfectly; from the entrance
representative of Vietnamese alleyways to the ramp design that symbolises rice fields and a giant birdcage to signify wealth and prosperity. It’s the perfect mix of generational inspiration and contemporary design.
Every single feature in this hidden sanctuary is locally made by the Vietnamese, and the Viet influence is certainly felt strongly throughout. As for me, I loved wandering the halls marvelling at the floorto-ceiling tapestries of beautiful women in traditional áo dài, as well as dining on top-floor restaurant, Miss Thu, throwing back fresh oysters and relishing in one too many bowls of gazpacho. Even the rooftop pool was a welcome reprieve on a
steaming Saigon day after endless hours spent exploring hidden backstreets and haggling for designer knockoffs.
Fusion has certainly pushed the boundaries of traditional hospitality while remaining true to the thriving metropolis outside the glass doors of Takashimaya Shopping Mall. The best part? If you’re anything like me and partial to a little retail therapy, you simply only need to step outside the main foyer to enjoy the spoils of the Saigon Centre in all its 10-storey glory. Bliss!

Only a short two-hour drive from HCMC, you’ll find the Mediterranean-inspired luxury of Melia Ho Tram Beach Resort. For those who love luxurious amenities set against a supreme coastal background, the 5-star resort will certainly not disappoint. Far from the hurry and humidity of the city, the first thing you notice here is an immediate drop in temperature thanks to an abundance of seaside breezes. The bougainvillea are in full bloom when we visit (March, the best month of the year for all-around amazing weather), which takes the overall sophistication of the resort to new heights. Here, there are 152 rooms and 83 private villas, as well as three restaurants, a swim-up bar, 20-treatment room spa, and so much more. It’s perfect for growing families too, with countless educational and cultural activities such as conical hat painting, traditional lantern making, and even an open-air cinema.
Known as Ho Chi Minh City’s answer to the Hamptons, Naples, or the Blue Mountains – an indication that this is where the well-heeled flock for an upmarket and restorative coastal escape –indulgence was waiting around every corner for us. Our first night stay included a beautiful open-air dining experience at Muôi Restaurant. Sitting underneath the stars, listening to the dull roar of the ocean, and sipping on French rosé, it was easy to see why this destination is the jewel in the crown of this humble coastal location.
When it comes to accommodation, you simply won’t be able to pass up a stay in one of the resort’s beachfront villas with infinity pool, gazebo, landscaped garden, and private access to the beach. Combined with exclusive access to The Level – a premium service that allows you access to private areas and select experiences – the luxury here is truly unmatched. MELIA.COM
It took approximately 30 minutes for me to fall head over heels in love with The Anam Mui Ne. One step inside the foyer where Vietnamese and Indochineinspired design fused seamlessly together, coupled with the quiet luxury of a natural colour palette and artisanal wares, and I was sold. I could have spent hours in that foyer alone, admiring the delicate design details and swooning over the local artist paintings that adorned the walls. For those who fancy a boutique experience with all the trimmings, this location is for you.
Positioned perfectly on the golden shores of Mui Ne, with sprawling views across the East Sea, the resort is the second offering in The Anam brand and opened only in January this year. Set across 1.2 hectares, it boasts two luxury pools (one fresh water, one salt water), 127 rooms, 7 private pool suites, two restaurants and bars, a spa and fitness centre, and impressively, a $5,000 bathtub in every single room(!). There’s plenty to love here, and although it was difficult to tear myself away from the oasis that was my Grand Premium room (complete with mosaic floor tiles and thatched roof), I was eager to learn more about the resort’s sustainability promises and social goals. Resort Manager Peter tells me about their goal to reduce their carbon footprint – a lofty objective they are following through on at every turn – with zero plastics, bamboo substitutes, solar power, and recycled laundry water, right down to the eco-friendly key cards made with wood from sustainably managed forests. When combined with their ‘nothing’s a trouble’ hospitality, it’s no wonder that The Anam is the latest resort to join an exclusive list of properties from around the world – the Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) portfolio. This one is definitely going on the ‘must visit again soon’ list.

For those with a penchant for adventure and opportunity, you’ll find Alma Resort Cam Ranh has both in spades. Situated on Vietnam’s emerging Cam Ranh peninsula and spanning an enormous 30 hectares fronting Long Beach – regarded by National Geographic as one of the planet’s most beautiful beaches – the 5-star resort labels themselves as an ‘extension of the ocean’ which is apt considering the oversized suites and pavilions that all afford sweeping views of the big blue. As our final destination in Vietnam, there was plenty to dip our toes into to wrap up a whirlwind trip (namely the 12 swimming pools stretching through the centre of the resort), including a waterpark, spa, cinema, science museum, yoga room, mini golf course, and even their very own mini supermarket. It’s easy to see why Alma Resort is a haven for young families seeking an escape from the everyday rigmarole of a big city: thrillseeking is optional, relaxing is mandatory. My ocean front pool pavilion provided me with the most beautiful vista, and the surrounding grounds were immaculately kept – a given considering the resort’s dedication to sustainability and education. There was plenty of dining opportunities too, and it was dinner at La Casa that topped my highlight list during our short stay. Over exquisite rosé and lashings of creamy carbonara, Alma’s dynamic managing director, Herbert Laubichler-Pichler provided endless repartee late into the night – including the time he hosted Charles and Camilla – post-Diana-era and long before they ever went public!
For those with adventure on the brain and kids to entertain, Alma Resort has something for everyone. And for those who simply want to kick back and enjoy a cocktail by the pool, don’t worry, there’s plenty of that available too.

Yoko x Felons Best Larger Chopped tuna and crispy rice snacks
By YOLANDA MOOREExecutive Chef Oscar Solomon believes we should approach food in the same way we do life – simply, playfully, and with a bit of bite. Combining his background in graphic, fashion, and spatial design, with an inquisitive mind and a genuine love of food, his dishes at Yoko and Greca are not only visually stunning, but conceptually rich.
“Dishes evolve through tiny evolutions that are like tiny layers,” he says. “It gives it a genuine depth that is earned over time.”
For Oscar, a self-proclaimed master of none, guided by a strong sense of humility, the kitchen is his classroom. “When it comes to food, I feel as though I am perpetually learning. That keeps me inspired to continue to evolve.”
A celebration of the connection between people and food, Oscar is inspired by the diverse culture of the people he works with and motivated by bringing joy to the people at his table. He’s also heavily influenced by Indigenous Australian food and its history and often cooks with native ingredients, recognising the privilege that comes with it. Oscar is also sustainability-focused, believing that, “living and learning to be sustainable is imperative, not just as a chef, but as a human being.”
Despite the success of his bread and butter, if you ask Oscar what his proudest accomplishment is, he’d say waking up smiling. “Taking a moment of gratitude is fundamental to a happy life.”
In his spare time, you’ll find him in the ocean or in the bush, spending time with his partner, friends, and large cuddly dog, and generally not taking life too seriously. Anyone who has dined at Yoko or Greca has experienced their vibrant and generous spirit – an energy that spills across the plate. This would not be possible without Oscar’s influence, and his philosophy to remain curious, creative, and carefree.
