bronwyn’s inspiring story
Humour for Hope
on dealing with breast cancer is now available in paperback.
Bronwyn Hope chronicles more ups than downs in her new book The Breast Is History. After making it through the majority of her life never taking a sick day, Bronwyn knew something was deeply wrong when she began loosing vitality and found it hard to shake a common cold. “I knew I was fatigued and seemed to want to sleep forever,” she says. “When I felt the thickening in my breast, in some part of my rat brain, I think I knew I was screwed.” Instead of sticking with her first instinct to build a big fort of despair and never come out, with the encouragement of a friend Bronwyn instead turned to laughter. Through her blog, Bronwyn Plus Breasts, Bronwyn found a less clinical, and humourous, way to work through her battle with breast cancer. “I really wanted my readers to know that having cancer was no different than dealing
with any other trauma in your life,” she says. “By taking a serious situation and extrapolating the ridiculous from it, I manage to laugh at some fairly dire things.” Although times did test her, Bronwyn says she continued to write, gaining more readers and a wider reach every day. Due to this success, Bronwyn’s inspiring story is now available in paperback: ‘The Breast is History – An Intimate Memoir of Breast Cancer’. Bronwyn is still undergoing hormonal treatment but she says at this stage it all looks good. “I try not to worry about the future. In fact, I don’t spare a thought for it. My main focus is on the here and now.” www.thebreastishistory.com

Bachelor Profile This laid-back yogi looks for a down to earth girl with a great smile – could you be the first to win his heart? What’s the most important quality a partner needs to have? Someone who is outgoing, enjoys having fun, and has a sense of humour. Your ultimate celeb crush? Tough one but my current would be either Sally Fitzgibbons or Margot Robbie. Any horror dating stories? I was tagged in some pictures from a wedding shoot where I was the groom, and on my next date the girl went silent and said, “I can’t keep doing this. I feel so bad... you’re married and I don’t want to be a home wrecker!” Has your sporting profile helped you in
16
the dating game? No I am still single! It’s probably the contrary; most girls don’t even understand cricket and the ones that do usually can’t bear to watch it. What’s your most treasured possession? I am not very materialistic, so my dog Angel who is a cross between kelpie and golden retriever. Any hidden talents? Away from cricket, I am very keen on my Yoga. Where do you see yourself in five years? I would love to be playing for Australia, have secured my first property and hopefully have had my first girlfriend (laughs).
Short ‘n’ Sweet Your favourite… Suburb? Point Lookout, Stradbroke Island. Spot for a knock-off drink? The Brunswick Social. Place for a first date? Don’t want to reveal all my secrets. Breakfast spot? Sourced Grocer or Little Larder. Place for a Saturday night boogie? I’m not a great dancer but probably Fridays or Laruche.

Dan Merrett | 29 | AFL Player – Brisbane Lions
We discover how Lions player Dan Merrett keeps his style fresh with a hint of swag.
“I like how outrageous some of the nba boys dress... something i should try to bring in.”
18
What do you love most about your job? I kick the footy around with my mates everyday, so it’s pretty awesome! How would you describe your style? Urban Surf Ghetto. What’s your fashion mantra? “Never take life advice from someone with bad style.” Whose celebrity style do you admire? I like how outrageous some of the NBA boys dress for their games and post game press conferences, like Kevin Durrant and James Harden. Something I should try to bring in. Your best budget buy? A tin of Uppercut Deluxe – that stuff can make you look like Leo DiCaprio in no time. Your most indulgent fashion purchase? I’m pretty thrifty. But I do have an excessive amount of t-shirts – more than 60. A t-shirt is a man’s jewellery. Your favourite Brisbane men’s
store? Michael Innis, West End, for suits. Glue, Carindale, and Fuel, Oxford Street, for casual. Your favourite online clothing stores? Afends, Deus and The Critical Slide Society. What do you think is the most important rule for women when it comes to style? What ever my wife does, she gets it right. Do you prefer… Boxers or briefs? Boxers to bed, briefs for the rest. Smart suits or cool casual? Casual. Short back and sides or a little scruffy? Short back and slick using Uppercut Deluxe Pomade. Where can we find you… On a Sunday morning? Recovery surf down at Currumbin Alley. On a Saturday night? Brunswick Social followed by a music gig if I’m not playing footy. On your next holiday? Japan.

Deb Farnworth-Wood: CEO at ASC Master Franchise Pty Ltd, CEO at Australian Skin Clinics, and founder of the Australian Skin Clinics franchise.
Facing forward Style introduces Australian Skin Clinics’ leading lady. Meet Deb Farnworth-Wood, the woman who has revolutionised the Cosmedi-Spa business with the founding of Australian Skin Clinics and its impressive expansion program. “Everybody wants to look their best, which is why so many women spend so much money on their hair, clothes, and shoes,” Deb says. “New technology and cosmeceuticals are changing options for women and men. Treatments are now more effective, affordable and readily available,” she says. For Deb, the dream first began in 2006 while on holiday with her children on the Gold Coast. She saw Australian Skin Clinics, walked in and immediately knew it was special, a place she wanted to be. She bought the clinic from Dr
Doug Grose in 2007 and from there a franchising enterprise was born. Australian Skin Clinics has since become a premier home of cosmeceutical treatments, harnessing and offering these proven treatments at its clinics across Queensland. The businesses’ fast-tracked, rising success, is a testament to Deb’s medical-minded business model, with a multitude of franchise clinics opened in the last two years. WHEN GOOD-ENOUGH IS PERFECT Clinical Psychologist Dr John Barletta discusses the pros and pitfalls of perfectionism. PERFECTIONISM IS A personality trait whereby a person strives for flawlessness and sets excessively high standards for themselves and/or others. Often, this trait is accompanied by critical self-evaluations, worry about others’ appraisals, and judgments of others’ performance. There are positive as well as negative aspects of perfectionism. Perfectionism can motivate us to: hang in there when we might otherwise give up, do a job well, and reach goals. At it’s worst perfectionism drives people toward unattainable ideals leading to anxiety in the process, and dejection with the outcome. The belief that one must meet high internalised standards and avoid criticism results in feeling enormous pressure. Perfectionism reduces happiness, relaxation, health, self-esteem, sense of accomplishment, and relationships. People who struggle with perfectionism have
developed rules (or ‘shoulds’) for various areas of life such as morals, behaviour, appearance, finances, time, efficiency, and output. If perfectionism is problematic for you, analysing the deep underlying motives and contributors can be useful – although sometimes it’s difficult to know the exact origins of such traits. What’s more useful is challenging the unhelpful thoughts about unrelenting standards and developing alternative ways of thinking and working. Self-compassion is critical in moderating perfectionism, as it enables us to tolerate a less than perfect life. Be okay with ‘good-enough’. I once overheard that it’s better to aim high and not get there than to succeed when aiming low. It’s absolutely okay to make mistakes. Mistakes are the lessons from which we learn; revel in your humanity! DR JOHN BARLETTA, CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST LEVEL 1, SUITE 2, 3 DAYS RD, GRANGE P 3356 4400 WWW.JOHNBARLETTA.COM

ARTHROSCOPES AND ALTARS Unknown demands on the modern day sportsman. Ian Healy says do the ‘I dos’ before you hit the table. “Wedding before operation” is a very common ultimatum made to cricketers, as they enter their quieter winter periods. Fast bowlers are the worst. Because of the demands of their role they could nearly do with an annual physical overhaul. They are big men, who run in hard, rotate, flex back, slam their feet down on a rock hard surface, uncoil, and bowl the ball on target fast enough to deceive batsmen – 120 to 150 times a day. Feet, knees, groins, sides, back, shoulders – you name it, it will be scanned. Then the downtime can be planned. Many weddings have been postponed by surprise selections and nasty injuries. Michael Kasprovicz is one that springs to mind, having
to postpone at late notice as he got his chance to emerge from Glenn McGrath’s shadow. Ryan Harris leads the way this year after an inspirational nine months of gut busting effort. A welcome home kiss on the way to the hospital from the airport could be the only keepsake for wife Cherie if he keeps displaying such stamina. If you know a cricketer, chances are their anniversary is in April between the summers of Australia and England. Patient partners don’t want you in a moon boot or sling, limping around seeking sympathy on the big day, so surgery will need to wait. The idyllic summer resort wedding has already been forgone, so the winter one better be good boys!

Tradition fruitless oarl, Nutella, get ‘e while they’re m HO T !
Hot Easter Favourites One a penny, two a penny, hot cross buns! Bun Thursday is almost upon us. With Easter fast approaching, who can resist indulging in some hot cross buns? Delicious and sweet, hot cross buns have been a family favourite throughout Australia for many years. Traditionally, the spiced sweet bun is consumed throughout Lent - from Shrove Tuesday until midday on Good Friday with the cross symbolising the crucifixion. The popularity of the buns mean Brumby’s Bakeries sell over one million of the baked goodies each Easter, with a quarter of a million of these sales made on one day! This day has now been dubbed ‘Bun Thursday’. Every year on the Thursday before Easter, Brumby’s are hit with their busiest day of the year thanks to the last minute rush of people who want hot cross buns before the season is over. This year the big day falls on April 17 and three types of buns will be flying out the door – traditional, fruitless and Nutella. Brumby’s Managing Director, Kevin
Waite says using traditional baking techniques is what sets Brumby’s hot cross buns apart from the rest, “Our stores bake their hot cross buns fresh daily using traditional scratch baking techniques… you just can’t beat a fresh, traditionally baked hot cross bun for Easter!”
If you haven’t already, head on over to your local Brumby’s Bakery before or on ‘Bun Thursday’ to ensure you get your hot cross buns before they say goodbye to us for another year! www.brumbys.com.au

The B105 AUTUMN bunnies Labby, Stav and Abby have a few mustread tips for Stylers this autumn. See how to spoil mum silly and, ladies, Stav has it all figured out with his beauty advice…
Stav’s Autumn Beauty Tips
Making Mother’s Day Special Abby shares a few ways to make mum feel extra special this Mother’s Day.
Mother’s Day Classic I love this event as it has a great atmosphere! Get a group together and be part of Australia’s biggest charity fun run with proceeds going to breast cancer research. You can choose the 4.5km or 8km run, or just walk it! www.mothersdayclassic.com.au
Sweet Treats I may just be getting swept up in the royal visit of Prince William and Duchess Catherine, but I’m loving high tea at the moment. Get in early at Bacchus for their special Mother’s Day High Tea, as it was a sell out last year. www.bacchussouthbank.com.au
Indulge Your Mum A facial or massage will leave mum feeling brand new. If you have left it to the last minute, gift certificates can be bought online and emailed or posted directly to mum. www.harbourdayspa.com.au 36
It’s obvious men do not understand beauty rituals. But after observing some bad habits, Stav’s got the answers for the ladies this autumn... Don’t do your make up in the car. We would rather you arrive late and makeup-less than on time with a mascara brush wedged up your nose. Ladies always do their makeup the same way. Lipstick, eyeliner and blush. Why not mix it up this season? Do a tiger! Or a Spiderman! If you ladies continue to lie about how much make up you wear, we men will continue to lie about our manhood… It’s only fair.
Easter Goes Gourmet! Labby’s top picks for those looking to make Easter even sweeter! Gone are the days of normal hot cross buns. Celeb chefs are now getting involved with UK cook Heston Blumenthal releasing a lemon myrtle hot cross bun in Coles for those who want to be a little posh on Easter Sunday. This year, Brumby’s have made hot cross buns even sweeter by replacing the boring old sultanas and creating a Nutella hot cross bun. Yum! But, everyone knows the best part of Easter is the chocolate eggs – just stay away from carob!

Easter: the Healthy Way
Sleek Wedding Styling
The scientific and botanical methods of skin revision (transforming the health and function of skin) can create the same effect as surgery, without going under the knife, and fundamentally improve the total appearance of the skin. Don’t think you’re alone in your skin concerns – qualified professionals are here to help. Paramedical Skin Practitioners successfully address the main areas of skin concerns including acne, rosacea, ageing skin, open pores, wrinkles, ingrown hairs and pigmentation. Paramedical skin revision systems are designed to instigate a change at the cellular level. Only after the cellular system is triggered and barrier function is repaired can the skin rebuild itself naturally, which uses the body’s natural healing functions to create positive skin renewal. As leaders of the skin revision market today, paramedical practitioners work with high-grade ingredients to reach the skin at a cellular level. A Paramedical Skin Practitioner’s approach offers dramatic, sustainable results for those who have tried it all and thought their scars were for life.
If you’ve been passing by chocolate eggs at the grocery store and feeling a sense of dread for the upcoming holiday, here are my practical tips for approaching Easter the healthy way. It’s not all about chocolate! Use the extra days off over the long weekend to keep active or do some Easter crafts. If you’re going to treat yourself, start with good quality dark chocolate – go for more than 70% cocoa. Compensate additional intake with extra activity. Did you know one 150g Cadbury Bunny takes 77 minutes of moderate jogging to work off? Use Good Friday to your advantage and try a delicious fish dish for dinner. If catching up with friends, be mindful of your alcohol consumption. Swap the traditional eggs in the egg hunt for small toys or stationery items. For gifts, Oxfam offer a range of gift cards, which helps to donate items to developing countries. For Easter, a chicken or the carrot vegie garden are my picks!
Tipped to be one of the biggest trend revivals for 2014 is the ever classic, glamorous, sleek, yet simple colour palette where total opposites attract: black and white. Layer it with mixed metals, mint green, or daring yellow to turn this traditional colour palette on its head and create a fresh, new look. Add in textured stationery or bold geometric or striped prints and an abundance of white flowers to create a modern yet formal atmosphere for your wedding. For that romantic Hollywoodglam feel, pair gold-edged candles with embellished mercury tea light holders - simply divine under soft lighting. Fresh clean white and strong bold black detailing is exceptional when left alone for crisp clean lines. Whether paired with your choice of accent colour for added effect, or left to stand alone, this colour combo is officially a melting pot of styling love that has created a craze all over Pinterest, so invite a little monochrome into your wedding styling.

renovating choices – part 2
A needling issue
The Master Bathroom
In my last column we talked about renovating as a great way to add value to your home. So here are some tips for you if you’ve decided that is the way to go. Do the reno, but don’t overcapitalise. You don’t need to spend thousands of dollars. In fact, it might be a financial mistake to do so. You need to make sure you’re going to get your money back – and then some, when selling. Your kitchen is one of your most important rooms. It’s generally a gathering point for the family and often an extension of internal entertaining areas. In a family home or high end apartment, investing in marble or Caesarstone for the benches might be worthwhile, as buyers will value this feature. Add value for less. Minor investments such as a new coat of paint, getting a handyman to attend to all the minor repairs and maintenance, or having the exterior cleaned with high-pressure water blasters can generate a great return in terms of a better sale price.
Pain and fear of needles are some of the biggest underlying concerns that patients come to us with. It’s important to reiterate that each person has a different pain threshold, but I can alleviate some fear with these points to consider: The needles used in sclerotherapy are very fine. They are slightly larger than acupuncture needles but much smaller than vaccination needles. Pain arises for three different reasons: 1. The initial puncture of the skin, but small gauge needles cause less pain in this situation. 2. Pain might arise from tissue expansion. This will cause pain in the same way as a “boil” causes pain. Skilled sclerotherapists pay meticulous attention to this aspect of treatment. 3. The different types of sclerosants each have their own properties and vary in the amount of discomfort they cause if they enter the interstitial tissue. Don’t let fear of needles dictate your treatment. The Leg Vein Doctor is skilled in administering these needles and making sure you are as comfortable as possible.
Our home is a sanctuary from the outside world and for the last 10 years or so we have been focusing on creating open plan living spaces – kitchen, lounge, dining - that help us “keep connected”. Now we turn our attention to our personal space: the bathroom. In a family home the bathroom needs to service many masters: washing the backyard off the kids, a personal beauty salon to our teenagers and Mum wanting to soak away the challenges of the day. How does one little room be all things to all people? The humble ensuite has evolved in the Master Bathroom; a place where the adults of the home can relax and revive themselves at the end of the day. We are designing master bathrooms that are often bigger than the family bathroom. Freestanding baths, double showers, double vanities, even televisions are being incorporated into the space. A space to call your own is no longer a luxury but a necessity in today’s busy and fast paced world!

The Powerhouse’s new artistic director, Kris Stewart, aims to offer a wonderland of choice to theatregoers – keeping “one foot in New Farm and one in New York”. Do you have any big changes for Powerhouse? Not really. It’s not about changes. It’s about looking at what has been successful here and what people love. Will you still be drawing from local talent? Absolutely! One of the things that most interests me is how we can invest in Brisbane. I think we can have a lot of pride in what we’re creating. Will the Powerhouse line-up see elements of your musical theatre career? Probably. That doesn’t mean we’re going to roll out boring revivals of musicals of the 50s! But we are going to look at merging contemporary music, dance and theatre. I think we have an obligation to do things that people find exciting.

Three lucky finalists in the search for Snow White.
Fairy tale beginnings Industry great, Bonnie Lythgoe, plucks musical theatre’s next big star from Aussie obscurity. After an envy worthy career spanning more than 30 years and a resume riddled with the world’s biggest names in entertainment – including legends like Gene Kelly, Sidney Poitier and Stevie Wonder – Bonnie Lythgoe is now lending a hand to those vying for their shot at the big time. Following on from her success with discovering raw talent on So You Think You Can Dance (US and Australia), Bonnie and son Kristopher created Lythgoe Family Productions in California aiming to update the traditional pantomime and uncover a few hidden gems along the way. “I always like to hold an open audition to see if there’s some raw talent that needs an opportunity,” she says. “It takes more time, but if the [talent] may be there I am ready to take the audition for as long as it takes.”
Bonnie with Jimmy Rees who will play Muddles in Snow White.
Now Bonnie is now offering the same chance down under, beginning with the nation-wide search for Snow White. Bonnie says if they find success with their debut production they’ll be following with Aladdin, Cinderella and Peter Pan. With her first leading lady announced in March, Bonnie’s attention now turns to creating a “trendy and modern” show audiences will fall in love with. “I’m trying to get away from people thinking ‘Oh it’s panto, it’s old fashioned’.” Bonnie has injected modern music and timeless hits, newsworthy references, and an Australian flare (scripted by co-writer Magda Szubanski), to create a hysterically funny, raucous show that is fun for all ages. Check out which lucky Aussie will play Snow White... SEE

The Maryon’s Woman Successful Brisbane boutique chain, Maryon’s, gets philosophical in their brand new trendy location.
Azumi & David scarves 46
Eight years ago Claire Campbell hit the ground running when she took over the reigns as Buyer and Director of Maryon’s boutiques. Living the dream, Claire splits her time between managing the successful business and buying from old and new talent in London, Milan, Paris and New York – bringing her clients the best from the fashion capitals. Claire says this season she is looking for edgy trends such as the contrast between masculine and feminine pieces. “I just purchased an oversized basketball tee made of fine lace by Givenchy,” she says. “That contrast of a manstyle lace-up shoe with a body conscious skirt, or even slouchy denim with sexy pumps, just does it for me.” Spurring this exploration of new and exciting trends is the boutique chain’s brand new Emporium store. Dubbed ‘Maryon’s Philosophy’, the new location fills a niche for emerging designers and diffusion brands such as Ancient Greek Sandals, Chiara Ferragni, Lizzie Fortunato and Maria Francesca Pepe. “It has it’s eye slightly more fixed on seasonal trends and experimental fashion than our James Street and Main Beach
boutiques that champion our elite brands, such as Celine and Givenchy,” she says. Even though we’ll see a new look from the Valley location, Claire is still focused on catering to the ‘Maryon’s Woman’. “She’s a stylish and confident dresser, such that she will risk the eclectic,” Claire describes. “She appreciates beautiful quality and loves to collect timeless pieces as well as rock a little of what’s hot now.” This is something she draws from a personal penchant. “My personal style is undone and effortless with simple, well cut pieces in beautiful fabric,” she says. “Usually neutral tones, because my focus is more on the accessories.” Her incredible accessories are envy worthy – expected of a high-end accessory boutique owner! A bonafide shoe addict, her collection has now hit the 300 mark. “Right now I couldn’t live without my Celine skaters,” she says. “They are just so comfortable and look so cool with anything I have thrown on, whether it be my cropped skinnies, silk shift dress or linen shorts.” Maryon’s Emporium Shop 15, 1000 Ann St, the Valley P 3252 0788 www.maryons.com.au

pearl of an idea Style dug deep to find out more about PandaPearls and their charity Sidewalk Sundays. PandaPearls is an eclectic shop of treasures, located on the north side of Brisbane. Style asked Amanda about the unique community spirit that drives a market like no other. What prompted you to hold your first Sidewalk Sunday? My friend Helen had the initial idea, we both felt a genuine obligation to make a fun, community event to support various charities. It’s not only PandaPearls but a collection of nearly 29 committed stallholders who sell everything from antiques to salted caramel, clothing, home decor, industrial design and plants.
Has anyone inspired you? As a kid, I absolutely loved the Spring Hill Fair and wanted to meet Cecilia McNally. I knocked on her door once as I wanted to see the suit of armour in her hallway! Where and when are they held? Outside PandaPearls, and dates are posted on the PandaPearls Facebook page. When is the next one? Sunday May 4 – Mothers Day Market. Any characters that stand out? Where to start! Maria our 64 year old ex showgirl and cabaret artist tried to sell celebrity chef, Dominique Rizzo a Jamie Oliver Cookbook…and she bought it!

Grecian Gems
‘Jasmine’ Necklace $89
‘Andrea’ Earrings $49
Get in touch with your European roots… or at least pretend you have some. Local girl, Velecia Lazarou, is opening a window to the Greek Islands by bringing Argentopuro jewels to Australia. Falling in love with the company on a trip to Rhodes with her family a few years ago, Velecia says the jewellery is like no other. “It was unique, handmade, European and every piece had character,” she says. Velecia worked up the courage to approach the owner, on her Honeymoon no less, and proposed a partnership to bring the gorgeous jewels to Australia. Now three months in, Velecia has already sold over 1,100 pieces – certainly confirming the Aussie love affair she predicted. ”We have five to ten pieces in each colour and style,” she says. “Our supplier likes to ensure that not everyone has the same piece, which
is something I particularly love about the jewellery.” Argentopuro jewels focus on statement earrings, necklaces and bracelets, colourful cuffs, and stunning rings. Most pieces range from $39 to $59 with the exception of a few special items, like the ‘Jasmine’ Necklace. “Our jewellery is more than affordable,” Velecia says. “[Each piece is] made in Europe from beautiful materials and can be worn day or night, as evening wear or casual accessories.” From a strong entrepreneurial and strictly Greek background, Velecia is proud to be bringing uniquely Grecian wears to Australia. “My dad and mum are my biggest role models, hence why I am always eager to do well – it’s where my passion and motivation comes from.” www.argentopuro.com.au

paris, milan... and portside Premium menswear brand secures their spot at the top of the ladder after landing a luxury deal.
Sam Abi Owner of Urbbana
Sam Abi attributes his love for high-end fashion to growing up around three stylish brothers. After spending five years building a solid knowledge of textiles, styling and design from Australian fashion houses, Saba and Oxford, Sam embarked on trips to Italy and Turkey where he met with skilled and experienced mentors who furthered this understanding and love of the industry. Returning to Brisbane, Sam felt he was finally ready to build his name. Urbbana was born in 2009 when Sam launched his first signature collection using prestigious fabrics and raw materials he became familiar with on his travels. The first of six stores across the Australia opened
in 2010 at Hamilton’s Portside Wharf. Sam says it was the best business decision he’s ever made. “I started with manufacturing high quality shirts and blazers before expanding production to include suits, knitwear, denim, shoes and accessories,” he says. “Urbbana has quickly developed as a symbol of elegance and sophistication in the Australian fashion scene.” It seems this symbol of prestige has continued to push Sam towards new heights, most recently securing him an unbelievable deal to use Ermenegildo Zegna cloth in his designs. The Italian luxury fashion house manufactures suits for some of the world’s biggest high-end brands including Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent and Tom Ford. Sam says the deal will assure Urbbana stays on the top of the boutique menswear ladder in Australia. “[The deal] will put us on the right track to compete with the international, high-end brands that are coming to our shores,” he says. “With more hard work, it will put Urbbana one step closer to becoming an international brand one day.” Sam says the new suits will be available across his stores in Brisbane, Melbourne and the Gold Coast from May. “The collection will focus on light weight merino wool, in line with the Australian climate, and the designs will include a few new season tweaks to the current cut, which has been very popular with our clientele.” Urbbana Portside Wharf, Hamilton P 3161 3959 www.urbbana.com.au

gambaro revival Paddington local gets a facelift – check out the exciting new looks from Gambaro Group. The Gambaro name is synonymous with high-class service and sensational seafood. They’ve built their reputation over the past 60 years as a family-orientated business – and as their customer you’re considered La Famiglia too! To keep themselves looking sharp, Gambaro have undergone a major revamp and are almost unrecognisable . The most notable change is the addition of the Gambaro Hotel. Opening May 1 this year, the hotel will represent a new era of Gambaro hospitality and boutique accommodation. Situated adjacent to the award-winning Gambaro Restaurant and Function Centre, the four-storey hotel offers a central location and six premium accommodation options, complemented by the famous superior service. And be sure to check out the new-look MG Bar next time you’re on Caxton, which flaunts a chic new exterior and a wine list as varied as the seasons on a Brisbane autumn day. Antique Flavour
sample delectable eats with mum at the paddington antique centre’s vintage afternoon tea, $28PP.
Savour some tea with a twist this Mother’s Day at the Paddington Antique Centre’s new retro café. Tracey and Terri have been hard at work baking treats for the big day.
If you’re looking for a Mother’s Day activity with a difference this year, head to the Paddington Antique Centre for a revamped, reinvented version of the high tea. Going for a laid-back retro vibe, owner Suzy Baines says there’ll be more pineapples than roses and more leather than lace. “We’ve taken a retro vintage approach, it’s an informal simplified version [and] not as prissy,” she says. “It enables men to feel comfortable too, as it can be a little alienating for them.” Treat mum to an afternoon of treats with the ‘Vintage Afternoon Tea’ priced at only $28 per 64
person. Their fantastic team of ladies will be creating delectable tasting dishes for this quirky addition to your Mother’s Day afternoon. Once you’re finished indulging, take a walk through the centre, which is the perfect place to while away a few hours. “We have a great range from high-end to cheap and cheerful,” Suzy says. “It’s great for anybody on any budget.” The experience and knowledge of the centre’s dealers is incomparable in the Brisbane antique scene, with customers often seeking them out for muchneeded advice and expertise.
Their collection of mid-century Danish furniture and collectables will be this month’s feature display, with a beautiful range from The Antique Guild also joining the mix. The superior craftsmanship of these beautiful old items simply can’t be reproduced. Juxtapose timeless pieces with your modern décor to create a uniquely vintage vibe that will last you a lifetime. take a walk on the southside A classic gets a face-lift and makes room for a new contender. Jane Schon checks out two hot new Brisbane venues. Next time you’re on the south side take a walk underneath the Story Bridge to check out two new dining destinations already creating a buzz among Brisbane foodies. The Story Bridge Hotel has relaunched their signature restaurant, Deery’s Restaurant & Smokehouse, and welcomes a new addition, Main St Bar & Eatery. With the same humble charm they’re known for, Deery’s flaunts an elegant new look, juxtaposing modern influences with classic design. Exposed brick, timber furnishings, an open ceiling revealing the original timber beams, polished wood floors and an open kitchen, are all elements you can expect in the revitalised space. Owners are adamant, “it’s not new, it’s evolved”. Executive Chef Jason Walker and Head Chef Adam Clements bring new menu ideas to the

table, offering seasonally inspired culinary creations made from great local and international produce. Expect mushrooms from Mumbai, Moreton Bay bugs, Mt Tamborine avos, and Mooloolaba prawns, alongside Deery’s famous char-grilled steaks. Craft beers on tap, new cocktails, and delicious homemade lemonade will also lend themselves well to Deery’s new neighbour. Main St Bar & Eatery houses an eclectic mix of design ideas, creating a cool contemporary vibe. Like a hidden bar under a bridge in Brooklyn, the feature wall filled with oversized vintage road signs sets the tone of the room. Retro timber benches, round booths and mismatched furniture create the ideal setting for afternoon beers or late night dining. www.storybridgehotel.com.au

evelyn orford offers skinial tattoo removal, which allows you to rethink the ink without the painful process.
Tattoo skin-tuition Change of heart? Evelyn Orford can change your skin art. How many of you have gotten a tattoo only to find that weeks, months, or even years down the track, you wish you hadn’t? While you can’t always predict whether the love you once had for your ink will last or fade, you can rely on ‘Skinial’. Skinial tattoo removal is a revolutionary treatment for those of us who’d like to rethink their ink. Traditionally, removing a tattoo can be a painful and painstaking process, but Skinial has been developed by scientists and doctors to achieve the best results with
TATTOO REMOVAL WITHOUT PAINFUL LASER
The safe and effective method to remove your tattoo
minimal discomfort – and no lasers! So how does it work? Skinial uses a natural liquid under the skin that acts as a colour remover and employs the body’s healing process to expel ink from the skin. Once rejected, the coloured particles form a scablike ‘crust’ of ink on the surface of your skin, which then falls off naturally, revealing the fresh, colour-free skin below. It’s that simple. As well as catering to multiple colours, Skinial also reduces the chances of scarring
because of its method, which works on smaller areas of skin simultaneously and allows for healing between treatments. Skinial is gentle and a less invasive alternative for people reconsidering their tattoos. Whatever your reasons for reconsidering your ink, Evelyn Orford offers a free appraisal of your tattoo to see how this technology can work for your individual needs. Fanciful Feet Need a place to unwind amid the daily drudge? Take a break at Happy Feet Myer Centre. By Jane Schon. High heels are nothing short of amazing. They have the ability to completely lift an outfit without another ounce of effort. I love my six-inch pump collection - my heeled boots, strappy sky-highs and chunky wedges. But, unless you strike it lucky with a particularly comfy pair, your feet don’t generally love you back. Sore arches, cracked heels and swollen ankles – it isn’t pretty. So if you’re like me, and need to give your trotters a little TLC, visit the miracle workers at Happy Feet in their brand new Myer Centre location who specialise in neck, shoulder, foot and full body massage. For just $15 (for 15 minutes), experience the revitalising foot steam where your feet are placed in a wooden bucket filled with steam. Plus you get to choose your own mix of Chinese herbal medicine or aromatherapy oils to
be used for ultimate relaxation. Reap the obvious sexy benefits of supple, rejuvenated tootsies while also improving your health. Foot steaming can help reduce stress, improve blood circulation, increase metabolism, and ease fatigue. If you want to maximise these benefits, opt for the full body steam therapy - $20 for 20 minutes. The heat and humidity helps to boost your immune system and promote antibody production, relieve discomfort of asthma, allergies and arthritis, and eliminate toxins. Happy Feet is perfect for stressedout office bunnies and health-nuts alike. If your body could talk, it would definitely thank you! The hearing aid will be receiving a stylish makeover this year with the help of the tech giant, Apple, and Danish company GN ReSound. The innovative new gadget LiNX will allow users to connect with their Apple devices, providing the hearing impaired with a seamless communication system and personalised settings. As hearing aids are often associated with the elderly, this can make people reluctant to seek help or want to admit they may benefit from wearing one. The discreet size and colour of the LiNX will improve the everyday experience of the hearing impaired while also reducing this stigma. The device has now launched in Australia and is available in 10 hair and skin-tone colours.

five habits affecting our health
Adam Parker, QUT Health Clinics
Adam Parker of QUT Health Clinics names a few habits we should cut out to achieve optimal wellbeing. During our lives we all develop habitual tendencies. Some of these can be endearing, like an infectious laugh, but others can begin taking a toll on our bodies. Clinical Services Supervisor at QUT Health Clinics, Adam Parker, says negative lifestyle factors come from poor health decisions often because we have the inability to see the long-term consequences of routine behaviours. Adam says the top five offenders include poor dietary habits, being inactive by sitting too much rather than exercising, a poor work-life balance affecting our mental health, excessive drinking and promotion
Bec, Lara, and the TPS Health team now offer their premier health services at a new Lutwyche location.
smoking, and inadequate sleep. “The anatomy and physiology of the human body is closely integrated,” he says. “For example, being active can be of significant benefit to the muscular, cardiovascular and nervous systems, and a problem involving one of the systems may likely impact on another. A long-term musculoskeletal injury or chronic cardiovascular condition can be worsened by anxiety, stress, or depression, but in reverse may cause the mental health problems.” Adam says these facts indicate there is rarely one single problem when it comes to disorders in
the body, and often there is no single solution to their prevention and treatment. If you’re not being active and giving your body enough rest, that good diet may not be doing enough to keep your body happy and healthy. So if you’re feeling sub-par, see the multidisciplinary team at QUT Health Clinics who can check out every aspect and advise the steps you need to get back to feeling fabulous! seaspiration Author and The Block judge, Shaynna Blaze, chats to Style about muses and the importance of using restraint. When did you first become interested in design? I was brought up with my Aunty as an artist and my Dad dabbling in DIY. Due to my Dad’s experimental nature and lots of mistakes, I saw the value in approaching design in long-term functional and useful ways. Has The Block changed the way you approach design? Not really. I think it makes me more aware to practice what I preach and live by example. Why did you draw inspiration from the beach for your new rug collection, Textured Coast? I love that even though the inspiration and texture is related to the beach you don’t have to have a beach house to appreciate them. Relaxing colour palettes and casual furnishings create an instantly peaceful mood. I find it good for regenerating the soul. How does one best execute a coastal 78
theme? Take inspiration from the beach, sky and surrounding scrubland but don’t try and theme it with an overabundance of obvious references like shell framed mirrors. Natural surfaces like stone tiling, aged timbers and linen fabrics create the perfect base to add layers of colour and accessories. What advice would you give to someone looking to tackle home renovation or design? Well, there is this great book called Design Your Own Home (laughs). You need to give yourself a brief on how you want the project to look. Your renovation needs to work long-term so be aware of future changes, like a growing family or a shrinking family, to get the best out of your home. www.therugcollection.com.au

A happy smattering of colour, gifts, and positivity. Need a little colour in your life? Can’t find the perfect gift? We suggest you go to your happy place – or more specifically, Happiness Place in Paddington. Awash with vibrant walls and brimming with colourful gifts, Happiness Place is somewhere you go for something truly special. A gift from Happiness Place is a gift that holds much thought, love, and is as unique as each individual. As reigning experts in all things styling and home décor, mother-daughter duo Lorilie Cunningham and Stephanie Rooke have some savvy tips for styling and introducing colour into your home. 1. Start with a blank canvas. Think about which neutral tone you want as a base and make that your starting point. Tip: black and white backgrounds create very different looks, so start from here before moving on.
2. Begin with basics. Introduce colour slowly into your home and let your ideas take shape. The idea in real life may evolve differently than the idea in your head. 3. Use vibrancy in accessories. A colour accent here, a bright pillow there. As for gift giving, Lorilie suggests to think of the generation of the person when shopping. “Young people love pieces to furnish their homes, while more mature customers are more inclined to furnish themselves with personal accessories or updated home accessories.” For Stephanie and Lorilie, Happiness Place represents the things that inspire them, so let their beautiful store inspire your next gift-giving venture. At the end of our enriched days, laying our head down in luxury was a dream of its own.
Relaxed to the Max Lets face it - you’re either a downward dog girl or you’re not! The offer of a yoga retreat scared the hell out of me. I’ve done a few beginner yoga classes in my time but never on a regular, let alone daily, basis! But the thought of getting away from the office, away from Brisbane, jetting off to Bali for five days was just too irresistible… And so it began! The planning of how do I sneak Champagne, where do I hide it and how do I chill it was almost causing me to break out in hives! And then I found out that my partner in crime Kellie was also invited and my worries were over! Together we could cleanse our chakras, heal our souls and align our spirits, having each other to debrief and download at the end of each day was a big bonus.... What we did not expect was to be absolutely blown away by the caring, giving, and ridiculously gifted and spiritual team at Nuala Retreats. Starting with the VIP airport pick up, we glided with ease through customs and baggage claim, jumping straight into the car through the hustle and bustle of the Denpasar streets through to Seminyak. We wound past rice fields, grazing cows 80

and ended at an absolutely unbelievable haven of chilled bliss. We were welcomed with open arms by the retreat team and the villa staff including a private chef on demand (just like at home...). Our package included an exhausting amount of relaxation, daily yoga - My fave was partner yoga - Meditation and massage sessions to name a few. The food definitely wasn’t canapés and Champagne but boy was it yummy! We felt completely nourished from the inside out with all meals and snacks based on nutrient rich super foods, juices, raw foods, and natural supplements. Cleansing? Yes. Delicious? Yes. Satisfying? Most definitely but the service was by far the stand out. I really do have to say this package is perfect for anyone. Whether you’re a hardcore yogi or just need to getaway. When you’re enjoying beach front sunsets, luxury outdoor bathrooms and exotic customs, it’s hard not to feel totally at peace! Thanks Nuala and especially to Varney, you and your team made our trip one to be remembered... www.nualaretreats.com
