Dean Merlo, James Wilkinson & Paul Johnston
IN IT TOGETHER With only a beanie, sleeping bag and a sheet of cardboard, Brisbane CEOs will experience a night of homelessness this month – in the name of a good cause. With hopes to raise $10m for the homeless at the 10th anniversary of the St Vincent de Paul Society’s CEO Sleepout, all eyes will be on the CEOs on July 18 at Suncorp Stadium. This year, CEO Sleepout Ambassador Dean Merlo has challenged CEO of Merlo Coffee James Wilkinson to see who can raise the most money for the cause. Being Dean’s sixth Sleepout, he knows what to expect from the event more than first-timer, James. “I have heard firsthand from Dean what the Sleepout is like and I look forward to supporting this great cause,” James said. “I am fortunate enough to go home every night to my wife and children and a warm bed, and there
are many who aren’t so fortunate,” he said. Dean added, “It’s cold and hard on the cement floor with only a piece of cardboard as a bed.” Speaking of his Sleepout experiences, he explained “as you lie there trying to get some sleep it really hits home that this is how 105,000 Australians sleep every night. It’s shocking.” On his friendly competition with James, Dean said “We’re both very competitive by nature and we believe strongly in supporting and giving back to the local community.” Though he thinks Dean will raise the most money, James also believes “if we can use this natural rivalry to raise funds for others then I am all for it.” JUNE15

Nailed it! If you suffer from weak, brittle or dry nails, Brooke from Brooklyn Beauty Bar has a treat for you… Brooke Jesberg
Many people can have acrylic, gel or shellac on their nails for years without any trouble, while others have them for so long they’re scared to remove them for worry about what lies beneath. Some clients even say they’re scared about going down the acrylic road entirely! Honestly, we don’t blame them. Weak, dry and flaky, spotted nails can occur when acrylic or gel is applied or removed incorrectly. But a revolutionary new nail-care treatment, IBX Repair, is showing amazing results repairing damaged nails. The salon treatment is designed to improve nail bed condition to maximize growth and minimise breakage as nails grow, using jojoba and avocado oil based products. Helped by a UV lamp, IBX penetrates the
nail directly, fusing the top layers to instantly strengthen and repair. Polish, shellac, gel or acrylic is then applied on top – so nails continue to look gorgeous while being nourished and supported. At only $15 per treatment with any manicure or pedicure, it’s a small expense to help repair, maintain and improve the integrity of your nails. Incredibly, improvements will be visible after only one treatment, but to achieve the best results, six treatments is optimal. Told ya – we nailed it! GET FIT, EMOTIONALLY Style sits down with author, blogger and founder of the Emotional Fitness program, Cynthia Morton to talk about overcoming addiction and how to become emotionally healthy. What is Emotional Fitness? It hopes to inspire an emotionally fit person - having the ability to remain present in any emotion they or anyone else is feeling with respect and compassion. What inspired you to start Emotional Fitness? ‘Coming out’ as an addict and sharing with unashamed emotional transparency my journey was essential for me. I left my marriage with two sons and lived on a single mothers’ pension… Writing saved my sanity and my life. What have been the most rewarding moments in your career? Winning a Pride of Australia Medal, an Australian of The Year Award,
The Prime Ministers Award of Excellence and an Award of Distinction for Services to Humanity… But the ‘most’ rewarding moments for me so far have all been private ones. What are the most common issues among your clients? Issues with ‘weapons of mass distraction’ that they would like to eradicate… challenges around fidelity, booze, food, finances and drugs. Some are facing trauma challenges with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and others require support in learning how to speak their truth. Do you feel you embody the behaviours you teach? I do my very best to live and learn
out aloud. I share one of my personal Emotional Fitness recovery rituals publicly every day. I most definitely practice what I preach and walk the walk. What are some tips to improve emotional health? Start with baby steps and remain consistent. Build your emotional strength one day at a time. Consistency is the key. www.cynthiamorton.com

STAV: SURVIVING THE COLD
Abby shares why winter ain’t so bad, while Stav gets in touch with his Scottish roots for the change in season.
When it comes to winter, we Brisbanites know how to survive the tough three and a half weeks it lasts in Queensland - and that’s by stuffing our face with warm winter comfort foods. Soup, hot chocolate, stew or warm beer – whatever it takes to alleviate the winter chill when the mercury hits a freezing 21 degrees. For me though, being Scottish, I can’t go past O’Connors Traditional Fish & Chips in Windsor. Nothing warms me up better than a haggis supper! And with the extra fat layer it provides, I won’t even need my Tardis onesie this season!
ABBY: 10 REASONS TO LOVE WINTER Any excuse to quote Jon Snow but, “winter is coming” and whilst the colder months can make you feel a little gloomy at times, here are some reasons to love the change of season: • Hot chocolate. • A Queensland winter is balmy compared to our southern counterparts. • Being able to wear
awesome hats and scarfs. • Big, bold red wines. • Pumpkin soup. • Hot bubble baths. • No summer skirts means not having to shave your legs. • Any excuse to stay inside all day in your pjs. • Visiting a sauna. • Going to the movies (mental note, Magic Mike XXL is out next month!).

CHANGING SUIT Mark Ferguson of Wil Valor is changing the paths of disadvantaged men – one suit at a time. On Thursday may 21, Mark Ferguson’s Suit of Change initiative saw over 1,100 items of men’s clothing collected. This huge effort from Brisbane’s corporate community included 200 suits, 115 jackets, 94 trousers, 431 shirts, 284 ties and 20 pairs of shoes. Mark Ferguson created Suit of Change to become a facilitator of clothing donations for non-profit partners Suited to Success and St Vincent De Paul; and Mark says the 1,100 plus items of men’s clothing collected will be used to help men less fortunate find new opportunities.
“I am passionate about personal presentation and I believe the right clothing for a job interview makes a great difference and is critical for the correct first impression,” Mark says. “A huge thank you to Chad, Ashley, Raven and Tony for sharing their stories and stepping out at the cocktail party as representatives for the amazing work being done.” But, the goal for Suit of Change didn’t end on May 21. Mark explains this will be an ongoing initiative and he aims to receive enough donations to enable a week’s worth of outfits for their clients once they have a

job. Both Wil Valor and 111 Eagle St will continue to accept donations as Mark says the more sizes and clothing items they have, the more people they can assist and the better fit they can provide their clients.
“A very sincere thank you to everyone involved for making the Suit of Change Day a success.” Check out the photos and speeches on the website. www.suitofchange.com

CREATING CUSTOM SPACES
STOP, HYDRATE AND MOISTURISE
MORE THAN JUST A HEADACHE?
If you want to make a statement at your next event, why not create a breakout area or VIP zone? Not only will this give your guests a feeling of exclusivity, it also allows for an area of relaxation and quiet contemplation, away from the buzzing vibe of the main event. At Styled Events, we utilise armchairs, lounges and custom seating to create visually spectacular, yet practical spaces. Our latest range has been inspired by 1950s retro chic with clean and angular lines well suited to the latest trends of geometric styling, bold patterned prints and ‘Mad Men’ inspired flair. These breakout areas are popular in venues with adjacent spaces, green rooms and alfresco areas such as balconies, verandahs and courtyards. We’ve even created trackside vantage points that really command attention. There are no limitations to this concept, think additional opportunities for guest enjoyment or corporate sponsorship by incorporating any number of experiential enhancements from makeup stations to wine tasting displays.
“Hydration” has been a buzzword in the beauty field for decades, and is the cause for the complete misnomer “moisturiser”. Technically, there is no such thing as a moisturiser. For dry skin sufferers creams can provide temporary relief for a few hours, but why doesn’t the feeling of hydration last? Think of it this way: dead skin cells are like a dried up sponge. You can rub the most expensive “moisturisers” on your face all day long, and all that happens is the sponge gets greasy. Soak the sponge in water and it puffs up soft, before being left to dry out again. That’s what happens to the surface of your skin. So how do we actually hydrate our skin cells? Drinking adequate amounts of water supplies our cells with hydration, but to help our skin retain this water we use special transdermal hyaluronic acid serums and other hi-tech ingredients to protect the natural moisturising factors in our skin. Always seek professional advice regarding the health of your skin.
Every wonder why you suffer from headaches and others don’t? Recent studies say one thing all headache and migraine sufferers have in common is a sensitised brainstem. What is a sensitised brainstem? A sensitised brainstem is a neurological disorder due to an irritation in the neck. If you’ve ever had a previous neck injury such as a car accident, a fall, or a minor hit to the head and neck region you are at a higher risk of having headaches. If this doesn’t sound familiar, the next most common reason of having headaches is due to a poor posture, such as a poor work posture, driving posture or even a poor posture when watching the TV. In most cases, your headaches are telling you that you have irritated your neck possibly without realising, and that your neck and brainstem requires treatment. Have you ever had your neck properly assessed for your chronic headaches and migraines? Always enlist in expert help from a headache practitioner to finally end the suffering.

At Diamonds International we only use the finest quality precious metals including yellow gold, white gold, rose gold and platinum when creating our diamond rings. Each metal has different properties and colour is determined by the metals used in the alloy mix: White gold - White gold does NOT start off as a white metal. 18ct white gold is made up of 750 parts pure yellow gold plus 250 parts which consists of a mixture of white coloured metals such as palladium, platinum, and silver palladium, which is then rhodium plated to give it a shiny, white finish. Yellow gold - made by mixing pure gold with alloy metals such as copper and zinc. Rose gold - made using a mix of pure gold with alloys including copper to give it that rosy glow. Platinum - more dense than gold, platinum jewellery is made up of 95% platinum and 5% other metals. It is more expensive than gold due to its purity and rarity and is very hard wearing, but more malleable. Platinum just requires repolishing to restore to its original finish.
Deciding on a bench-top material for your kitchen can be tricky. Choosing between hardwearing and appearance sometimes means selecting the material is a compromise. If you’re budget conscious, using a laminate was once your only option. While offering durability, it restricts the style, look and feel you want to achieve in a kitchen. Alternatively, natural stone can add luxury, though marble and granite aren’t stain-resistant and the ongoing care may not be a practical option for everyone. Good news - compromise is no longer required! The beauty of natural stone is now able to be combined with the durability of laminate. Man-made products like reconstituted stone, solid surface and porcelain provide a plethora of options to suit any layout or design. They can be used over greater areas or for the ever-popular island bench, all without showing joints. Seek advice from a qualified design professional to compare materials that suit your needs and budget.

A fireplace for winter
PORTION DISTORTION
an ultra handy machine
Have you ever considered a Wood Heater for beating the winter chills? Recent research conducted by the CSIRO found that firewood produces less greenhouse gas than all other domestic heating options. A wood heater also delivers the lowest cost energy for heating the home. Firewood is a sustainable source of fuel and in Queensland we are fortunate in having an abundant supply of quality, seasoned hardwood to easily meet the needs of the population. Some of today’s slow combustion woodheaters also utilise hybrid and heat-bank technology to add further efficiencies. Many of the new energy-efficient and clean-burning fireplaces provide exceptional long term value in heating costs, whilst adding dollar value to your home. So why not indulge in the luxury and unique warmth of a new clean-burning fireplace this winter, knowing that you are also taking care of our environment. While Aussie BBQs & Fireplaces is able to provide the fireplace, you might have to procure the rug and red wine!
Do you suffer from portion distortion? It may be the reason you can’t shed those last few kilos. Consuming oversized portions during meals could be one of the main reasons we are getting fatter as a nation. There is no denying that what we eat is of equal importance, but the amount of food we consume has more than doubled in the past 40 years - we are literally supersizing ourselves to death. Did you know, the longest living people in the world consume very little food and what they do consume is of a high nutritional value? Today, many obese people are nutritionally bereft yet consuming more. Calorie intake can be reduced by up to 20% by reducing portion sizes. Stop eating your meal when you are only 80% satisfied - this will aid digestion and reduce calorie intake. Or, try putting leftover food away immediately before you sit down to your meal. Those who follow this rule tend to eat about 14% less. The Waitplate System gives you the tools to reduce portion sizes and improve your eating behaviour.
Ultrasound plays a key role in Phlebology the diagnosis and treatment of venous disorders. Vascular Ultrasound uses both Colour and Spectral Doppler imaging of the venous system. Consultation - Ultrasound is used to determine what is occurring below the skin, which might be causing varicose or spider veins to be seen on the leg. A map of normal and abnormal veins is created, which is used to formulate a treatment plan for the patient. Treatment - Ultrasound delivers the two principle methods of treating varicose veins; Endovenous Laser Therapy and Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy. The ultrasound works as the doctor’s eyes and means laser fibres and needles can now be placed within an accuracy of a millimetre deep within the tissue. Reviews - Serial ultrasound examinations for 12 months following treatment are used to confirm successful occlusion and complete absorption of all treated veins. Dr Kemp trained in Medical Sonography at The University of Sydney.

Comfort food cooking
FRINGE BENEFITS
GUIDE TO WINTER SKIN CARE
Having grown up in Tasmania, I miss winter. Not the cold, but the wonderful food that goes with it. It’s at this time of year I start thinking about warming comfort food. Not only is slowcooked food nourishing but great value - I swap grass fed rib eye for cheap, secondary cuts that are full of flavour and perfect for slow cooking. Slow cookers are a perfect time saver, but I prefer to do my slow cooking in a heavy casserole dish with a lid, like a Le Crueset. It’s just as safe to leave this in the oven on a very low heat (around 100 degrees) as an electric slow cooker. It produces a more intense flavour and allows us to sautée off the onions and garlic as the perfect base. There’s nothing like coming home on a cold winter’s evening to a house filled with delicious smells. There are heaps of great recipes for slow cooked food - Moroccan lamb tagine, with preserved lemon and the sweetness of dates and honey, or a slow cooked Greek-inspired lamb shoulder with rosemary and olives cooked on lemony-oregano potatoes.
There has been a steady increase over the last two years in new residential developments in Brisbane’s inner suburbs, fuelled by significant infrastructure investments in suburban business districts within 10km of the CBD. There has been a shift from CBD-based living as city-fringe suburbs establish their own business and employment hubs, resulting in demand for high-end, boutique developments for professionals looking to live closer to local entertainment and shopping. Over the past 15 years, Brisbane’s inner-fringe suburbs have demonstrated stronger capital growth than the CBD, with an annual growth of 6.6% compared to 5.5% in the CBD fringe area. There is significant demand for highend, boutique developments in Ashgrove, Indooroopilly, Greenslopes, Holland Park Norman Park, Morningside, Chermside, Upper Mount Gravatt and nearby areas. Boutique living allows for well-planned apartments with sizeable entertaining areas at a fraction of the price of city-fringe houses.
Are you suffering from seasonal weather change? Cooler, drier months make a significant difference to how your skin feels, and having a suitable winter skin care regime can make a big difference. Moisturise Cool weather equals dry skin, which creates the need to moisturise. Dry, dead skin cells can build up on the skin and sometimes moisturiser is not absorbed. To ensure your face is free from dead skin cells, our 9-Step microdermabrasion treatment, supplemented with Skinstitut Glycolic scrub, will leave your skin feeling smooth and clear. Nourish It is essential to use regular Vitamin A and Vitamin C preparations to help nourish your skin - Skinstitut Retinol and Vitamin C are ideal. Calm & Firm As skin can become irritated during winter, Skinstitut Rejuvenate 15 is vital. Containing smoothing, anti-wrinkle properties that reduce irritation, Skinstitut provides antioxidants and increases the firmness of your skin. CARING FOR NATURE’S GEMS
SUITED FOR A GOOD CAUSE
DIGITAL COLLABORATIONS
As the pearl King Kokichi Mikimoto said, ‘A pearl is a living Jewel.’ Mr Mikimoto was a genius when he discovered the art of culturing pearls in 1892. Once adornments of royalty, pearls have become more affordable and with care, should last the wearer a lifetime! Although pearls are quite resilient, they are an organic gemstone that require some basic care. • Pearls love moisture! Store your pearls in a soft pouch, away from other jewellery. • A wipe over with a damp cloth after wearing will remove perspiration, perfume or lotions. • Avoid tanning lotions, hairspray and never expose pearls to chlorine or cleaning products. • Have your pearls restrung annually and the clasp checked. We offer restringing here at Panda Pearls with the prices starting at $60 for a standard choker length. Above all, pearls absolutely love an outing and it is true that the lustre is only enhanced when in contact with your skins natural oils. Hope to see lots of you in your Panda Pearls at the Stradbroke!
As a former sportsman, it’s not in my nature for me to promote the great charity work most athletes are involved in as there are so many doing such fantastic work. However, if there’s a particularly glowing example, I will always make an exception! Fellow Style contributor and former basketballer Mark Ferguson of Wil Valor is sacrificing plenty for society; bespoking the wardrobes of Brisbane identities, by initiating a clothing support scheme for the well-being and self esteem of its clients. Suit of Change is a social project which collects preloved suits, ties and accessories to be refitted for those less fortunate for significant events, such as job interviews and significant family occasions. Clothes can help to make the man and Mark Ferguson has piled so much effort into enabling this cause - often at the expense of his burgeoning business - it is a great credit to him. Suits and ties can be dropped into 111 Eagle Street in Brisbane’s CBD. If a suit in your cupboard hasn’t been worn for over a year, it is one for Suit of Change - and those less fortunate and very appreciative.
Businesses are forming collaborations online to reach new followings, but it’s important to make sure your objectives are met and it’s mutually beneficial for both. A digital following is an asset that can be used as a bartering tool. Consider these before putting on your negotiation game face:

• Weigh up the numbers - Social media and databases. How many do you have vs them? • Engagement – big followings are impressive, but are they engaged? But, in saying that; • Don’t take things on face value – with Facebook, people don’t always comment, like or share. Ask to see background analytics. What you see as an outsider doesn’t necessarily reflect the engagement value. • Does the audience align with your brand, and how will you retain them post campaign? From here, both parties can make a clear plan around content creation, number of social media posts required, e-newsletter inclusions and overall campaign costs. • Lastly, implement a post-campaign review to determine any improvements for next time. www.stylemagazines.com.au

A TASTE OF TENERIFFE It’s that time of year again! Get ready for the sixth annual Teneriffe Festival – this year is going to be bigger and better than ever. The Teneriffe Festival is a celebration of Teneriffe’s vibrant culture, rich history and myriad of local businesses. Conceived after the area was officially registered as its own suburb in 2010, the festival has grown from 8,000 punters in its opening year to over 50,000 expected to attend this year. The one-day festival will showcase street markets, historical tours, Kids World and the Alfred and Constance Pork, Fork and Cork Laneway which includes offerings from Limes, Kwan Brothers and Doughnut Time. New additions to the festival include the Brisbane Cheese Market including Kingaroy Cheese and Yarra Valley Dairy, and the markets are now open until 9pm so visitors can enjoy the
markets lit up at night. Music lovers can soak up the entertainment at one of four live music stages, including the floating Mirvac River Stage. Teneriffe Festival Chairman Richard Bodley says the Festival has a positive affect on the local area as it not only boosts the local economy but provides a great atmosphere. “People love to be able to sit in the middle of the street in the sunshine and relax in such a beautiful area,” Richard says. “Teneriffe has a distinct peaceful, yet busy and vibrant character and is a pocket of Brisbane that has so much worth celebrating.” open 10am until 9pm on Saturday 4 July Entry is $2 pp and free for kids under 12 www.teneriffefestival.org

Fans of southern American food, y’all are in for a real treat with new restaurant, NOLA Portside opening in June. NOLA Portside promises to add a little soul to your typical American cuisine. NOLA Portside, named after the slang term for New Orleans and Louisiana, was inspired by a journey around North America by owner, Miles Gillham. “Thanks to the trip beforehand, I knew what I had to bring back to Brisbane,” he said. “Not just another buffalo wings joint, but a genuine interpretation of why New Orleans is so wonderful.” Miles promises a rich variety of Louisianainspired offerings. ASIAN FUSIONS With flavoursome, healthy dishes made from the freshest ingredients, FantAsia is changing Brisbane’s perception of food court dining. Food court cuisine is usually synonymous with greasy, processed and often unhealthy options. But what makes FantAsia different is that it’s none of these things – instead, it is authentic Asian cuisine at its finest. Judy Wong and her family have restaurant hospitality in their DNA, spending a lifetime perfecting their three principles of hospitality quality, service and value. FantAsia was formed in 2010 to provide a way for everyone to experience restaurant quality Asian food with a modern twist, at takeaway prices - something often lacking in the market. Today, with nine stores in and around Brisbane and an ever–growing customer base, they are still as passionate as ever about their food. New winter menu items include an aromatic Siam

red curry with chickpeas and a reinvention of the iconic Japanese pork dish, tonkatsu. FantAsia’s Ginza Tonkatsu is made with lightly battered crispy pork pieces coated in a rich, sweet and tangy sauce and served on a nest of shredded cabbage salad. The wide–ranging menu also includes light and fresh dumplings and hearty slow–cooked Tokyo Beef. With the health of their customers front of mind, FantAsia also offers extra vegetables to any dish as well as the option of ‘super rice’ – a delicious blend of grains and seeds for only $1 extra. It’s FantAsia’s winning combination of wholesome, fast, fresh meals that won’t break the bank that will keep the queue of customers old and new stretching through the food court every lunch time. www.fant-asia.com.au

Perched on a corner in the quiet backstreets of Paddington, Heather’s salon Little Hair Nest has been trading for less than a year, and her holistic approach leaves her clients feeling great and always coming back for more. Heather was inspired to create Little Hair Nest after noticing a gap in the industry for a natural approach to hairdressing. “I wanted to create a relaxing and luxurious salon
that catered for clientele who are conscious of the environment and personal wellbeing,” Heather said. The salon is stylishly decorated; plants hang from the ceiling, a vase of blossoming poppies sit at reception and the basins use vintage chairs from the 1960s. “The salon has good karma, I really love being there and all my clients love to come and chill out,” she said. As well as using ammonia-free colours and sulphate and paraben-free products that are derived entirely from plants, Heather also recycles

Heather has big plans for her salon and is looking to soon expand her offering to include beauty treatments. Little Hair Nest 70 Charlotte St, Paddington P 0421 547 147 www.littlehairnest.com.au

What’s your background? I’ve owned multiple salons both in Brisbane and interstate and have styled the tresses of some of Hollywood’s biggest names. I’ve styled and met amazing people over my 20 year hair and beauty journey. What do you love about your industry? Making women feel more confident, beautiful and helping them discover their individuality. Favourite hair trend for winter? Gold, violet and toffee tones are on trend especially in the colder months. Top hair tip for winter? Darker tones are trending, but blonde is still huge. Choose a colour based on your lifestyle, environment and ensure it balances your eye colour, complexion and personality. The product I can’t live without is… Our hair dryers, straighteners and high-tech curler sets by Ego. You’ll be ‘blown’ away by how advanced the technology is! Favourite place to eat in Brisbane? Cayenne, Paddington. The $15 lunch is great value and comes with city views. Where will we find you on a Saturday night? Catching up with close friends.
What’s your background? Previous owner of Rococo Hair for 21 years and prior to that I worked for some well known industry names. What do you love about your industry? I have a passion for hair and giving the client the ‘wow’ experience. Favourite hair/beauty trend this winter? Concave textured bobs as they sit well with winter coats and scarves. Top hair tip for winter? Use a top quality hair moisturising treatment to rehydrate dry hair. The product I can’t live without is… Unite Moisture & Shine range especially the ‘Luxury Cream’ and ‘Intense Mask’. Favourite place to eat in Brisbane? Grappino’s, Paddington. Where will we find you on a Saturday night? Mr and Mrs G’s in the City.
What do you love about your industry? I love witnessing the change in attitude from our clients from when they arrive to when they leave. Their smile and sparkle in their eye is always brighter. Favourite hair/beauty trend this winter? The brow game! Thicker, fuller, darker eyebrows like Cara Delevingnes is my favourite look. Top tip for winter? Taking time out to relax is important and pamper yourself whenever possible. The product I can’t live without is… Unites ‘7 second refresher’. It’s a notch up from dry shampoo and a beauty must have for the busy Brisbane individual. Favourite place to eat in Brisbane? Tiramisu, Paddington. Where will we find you on a Saturday night? In The Valley or at home being a 19 year old grandma.

BROW TOWN Style chats with The Brow Bar about the coolest trends this winter, and what’s behind the obsession with bushy brows.
“We’d like to think we have learnt from the mistakes of the past, but as most things in fashion, everything seems to come back around,” says Chernae. “Fingers crossed pencil thin brows don’t follow that rule!” Chernae says the biggest make-up trends to keep on your radar this winter are emeralds, deep reds and nudes, which are perfect for complementing those natural brows. “Our Luxury lipstick in Temptress (dark red), the Envious palette showcasing three amazing green shades, and the Naturalist palette with four fabulous neutral shades will have you looking on-trend this season.”

What do Lily Collins, Camilla Belle and Cara Delevingne have in common? On-trend, bold brows that are the envy of women everywhere. They’re the most sought after brow looks for clients of The Brow Bar, and we know why. “Thick brows really complement your face and also make you look a lot younger, more carefree, and who doesn’t want that?” says The Brow Bar’s Chernae Silk. “Models and actresses sporting big, beautiful brows have brought attention to the necessity of having amazing eyebrows.” Bold, natural brows are gaining popularity thanks to social media and the catwalks - and it looks like they are here to stay. Chernae says she hopes there won’t be a throwback to the pin thin brows of the 90s.

SHED THE BABY WEIGHT
Other than having amazing brows, the one other thing that can really make a major difference to the enhancement of your natural beauty are your eyes. Whether you like to make them pop with makeup, or want something that’s already ready to go when you wake up in the morning, The Brow Bar’s variety of lash services are a great way to enhance the natural beauty of your eyes. Eyelash extensions - a perfect, fuss-free way to make sure your eyes are the envied windows to your soul. At The Brow Bar, we expertly attach individual lashes to your own to add as much or as little thickness and length as you desire. Long Weekend Lashes - if you just want beautiful lashes for a special event or a holiday, try The Brow Bar’s Long Weekend Lashes. Individual clusters of lashes are applied to look incredibly natural or as bold as you like, and will last for up to a week. To find out more about our lash treatments, make an appointment with one of the experts at The Brow Bar today.
Are you feeling dehydrated now that winter has started? Winter is the time to set up your Spring look, and starting with your eyebrows is ideal as they frame your face. Do you have difficulty growing your eyebrows? Our Eyebrow Embroidery service will create semi-permanent, perfectly shaped eyebrows. Your beauty regime should also focus on skin be it suppleness, bags under the eyes or broken capillaries. The Complexion Code Signature Facial or our DMKs’ skin rebuilding enzyme will give your skin back the nutrients it needs. Skin cells require nourishment like your body, through vitamins and minerals which re-activate the cells to give you the natural glow of the skin. To enhance your emotional heath and recover your body and soul to a relaxed state, try a dry body brush, deep tissue massage with aroma oils to increase the blood flow through your body so you are hydrated, relaxed and ready for fun when the sun comes out again! Complexion Code offer a whole package of beauty - from head to toe and inside out.
Postpartum exercising can be beneficial in many ways. Regular exercise improves immune function and increases production of antioxidant substances, though it can be detrimental if not performed with awareness of changes that occur during pregnancy. Increased oestrogen while breast-feeding can weaken your pelvic floor, and combined with weakness from pregnancy, you may be at risk of stress incontinence or prolapse. It is important to consult a women’s health physiotherapist when planning the right program for your body. At The Body Refinery, we advise our clients to rest for the first six weeks post-birth with a few gentle walks. Once their pelvic floor has been assessed, they commence a Pilates program focussing on pelvic floor strength and endurance. We carefully monitor women with a diastasis and those who have had C-sections. Ensure that if you are exercising with anyone they have a good understanding of the changes that occur in the postpartum period in order to prevent damage down the track.

let’s talk periods
HEALTHY WINTER WARMERS
The BENEFIT of friends
Women are becoming less averse to talking about women’s health issues which were once taboo. But women do not talk about what is normal. For instance, how much pain and how much bleeding is normal during a period? In general, women lose up to 80ml of blood per period. This equates to two to three half full standard pads or tampons a day. There are times when bleeding is naturally increased - commonly in the mid 30’s, early 40’s and just before the menopause. Pain is seldom a feature of a normal period, and women with normal periods rarely use pain killers. There are multiple possible diagnoses that can cause increased period pain and flow so talk to your GP or gynaecologist. Decades ago there were no treatments available and women suffered in silence. We now have effective non-hormonal and hormonal treatments as well as a range of surgical options. If you would like to learn more, arrange an appointment with Specialist Gynaecologist Dr Stamatiou.
Comfort foods tend to be high in simple carbohydrates and can be particularly appealing during the colder months. Avoid those extra calories this winter and follow these easy tips to stay warm AND healthy: More vegetables - Packing meals with veggies ensures you feel fuller and provides immune boosting nutrients. Soups and slow cooked meals are some favourites but don’t forget vegetable bakes, frittatas and ratatouille. Monitor your carbs - Watch the amount of extra carbs that can creep into your cooking. Winter dishes often have enough rice or pasta that we might not need the extra piece of bread. Keep the protein - A high protein meal can help break the carb craving cycle. Opt for a good portion of chicken breast, seafood or lean meat. Avoid tinned soups that lack meat or legumes as these will leave you unsatisfied and grazing long into the evening. Be creative - Tweak your favourite recipe! Swap the cream for evaporated milk or use sweet potato on your Shepherd’s Pie.
MY BEST FRIENDS — I have more than one — mean I have people to spend time with so I really enjoy events and experiences, and avoid loneliness. Having fun and interacting is critical for physical and psychological wellbeing, and not needing to think twice about what you want to share is a blessing. We need to feel free to be ourselves as much as possible. Friends give us support and feedback, sometimes being our biggest fan, sometimes playing devil’s advocate. Either way, friends care enough to guide us without being manipulative. Friends help boost self-esteem, motivate one another to grow and contribute to life success. Sometimes we find ourselves in a situation when we don’t have as many friends to connect to as often as we’d like. If you haven’t spoken to an old friend in ages, try contacting them they may value your efforts. Professional and social contexts are times to appraise people to see what you have in common. Or try new activities - shared interests usually lend themselves to easy relationships.

European luxury in Cabarita A taste of the Mediterranean has just arrived in Cabarita beach. By Sally Scott. Inspired by the mesmerising coastal villas of Italy’s Positano, Lake Como and the Isle of Capri, Halcyon House is a hotel like no other. Designed by Brisbane interior designer Anna Spiro, the 21 rooms and suites in Cabarita feature décor with a ‘white washed’ Mediterranean feel. Anna travelled to the US to buy vintage pieces and furnishings from some of New York’s top designers, while a team of craftsmen from northern New South Wales were engaged to bring the vintage pieces to life in each individual room. These sit alongside Australian treasures, such as antique seascapes collected from around the country. “I wanted to help the owners create something not currently offered here in Australia. I wanted the interior to seem as if it had been collected over a long period of time, and always
existed,” Anna says. But it’s not just the fitout that oozes Europeanstyle luxury; Hotel Manager Mauro De Riso has been imported from Italy’s luxurious J.K. Place, Capri to instil Italian service and style. The focal point of the hotel is the outdoor pool and poolside restaurant, managed by multi-award winning chef, Steve “Snowy” Snow of ‘Fins’ fame at the iconic Byron Bay Beach Hotel, and featuring produce from the organic kitchen garden and native bush foods. The boutique hotel, which opened in May, also features a 24-hour reception, concierge, guest lounge, business centre and day spa.
