Under the sea, under the sea, darling it’s better, down where it’s wetter, take it from me!
whale of a time At the heart of Brisbane’s Sunshine Coast awaits an incredible natural experience. Here at Style Magazines we are very envious of Queensland Weekender’s recent underwater adventure! The crew, including presenter Jessica Skarratt swam and snorkelled below the Mooloolaba waters, frolicing with the majestic humpback whales. Australians have long had a love affair with the water and the gentle giants that inhabit it, and now people have the opportunity to see them from a very different perspective on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. Sunreef have introduced the Australian first opportunity to swim with these captivating creatures! Sunreef Whale Encounter Supervisor, Dan Hart says the experience is a natural experience, 100 per cent on the whales’ terms and is operated under a strict code of conduct to protect the whales and the participants. “Whales are known as curious creatures so they may come over towards us or they may just swim past or away. Either way it’s an experience you will never forget,” he says. The three-hour round trip offered by Sunreef has
10
a maximum of 20 participants per trip, to make your experience as intimate as possible. All wetsuits and snorkeling equipment are supplied on the day, as well as a shark anklet to repel sharks. Sightings are common at the time of year, but wild animals can’t be relied on to perform for the camera... on this occasion Jess got lucky! Once a whale is sighted, the Sunreef boat will be put into neutral 100m or more away from the whale, and if the conditions are safe, the boat will be turned off and swimmers will be allowed into the water holding on to the floating line attached to the boat. Tune into their upcoming episode, as Queensland Weekender share their underwater encounter, from the marina, to the water and even mention some Mooloolaba accommodation worth checking out when you get to dry land. Sold on compassion This inner-city real estate agent turns our attention to her charitable deeds benefiting the RBWH. Last year’s Butterfly Ball
Harcourts Solutions’ real estate agent Bridget Gabites extends her real estate philosophy of ‘being all about the people’, to her charity involvements with the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital’s (RBWH) Butterfly Babies program. Creating a successful profile in the Brisbane real estate market, Bridget’s career at Harcourts is far from her past career as a scientist for a scientific supplies company, where she had visited the research laboratories many times. It wasn’t until two ladies from the Butterfly Babies committee really opened her eyes to the research Prof. Colditz was doing for conditions such as stillbirth, prematurity and birth-related injury. “I knew I had to make the most of my ability to assist this amazing research. I assisted them in getting Harcourts Foundation on board and we’ve been the major sponsors for the past two years.”

scent-sory stimulation Style chats with Nick Smart, owner of Libertine Parfumerie, about the recent New Farm rebuild and the world of boutique perfumery.
Discover something new for your fragrance library at Libertine’s revamped New Farm boutique. Nick Smart
A scent can say a lot. It can transport you back to poignant moments, remind you of a lost love or an old friend, evoke a mood, and most importantly, express your personality. The problem is many of us have only discovered scents from department store floors. Nick Smart of boutique parfumerie, Libertine says perfume is the ultimate accessory but, like a pair of shoes or a bottle of wine, there is a time and place for every fragrance. “I think all scents in the market work, it’s just a
matter of choosing the occasion for them,” Nick says. “Libertine is an introduction into the world of niche perfumery - fragrances that have been made for royalty, Grace Kelly or John F Kennedy. There is a difference in quality and a difference in the historical aspect of the scent. It doesn’t necessarily mean you pay more in Libertine, you’re just getting quality.” Libertine have been running their perfume classes in Brisbane for five years, and have recently revamped their New Farm boutique to
make more room for the popular events. “You come with a group, you drink Champagne for about an hour, and you learn about scent. It’s a real discovery.” “We don’t believe you need to get rid of scents. A spray of a perfume is like a sixth sense. So keep those scents that give you great memories. It’s about READ MORE ONLINE having a fragrance wardrobe and changing that wardrobe up, like fashion, over the years.”

TESTIMONIAL Simone Weigall has just successfully sold our second property. We were again delighted with her professionalism, communication, presentation and honesty. Our circumstances required a fairly swift sale, and Simone only had 48 hours to negotiate a sale on our behalf. Simone expertly negotiated and maintained the integrity of value on our property and achieved a record price of $1 250 000. We were thrilled at the outcome, and now realise the fundamental differences between an experienced agent and an inexperienced agent.
OR
We would without hesitation recommend that you engage Simone’s services to sell your property if you want to achieve an exceptional result with a truly pleasant experience.

KEEP YOUR EYE ON THIS You can now use your smartphone to secure your property and monitor what happens there, from anywhere in the world! Ever wondered what time the kids really got home or when the cleaner left for the day? Well the team at Network Locksmiths and Security have got the solution. The innovative RISCO Agility 3, is a totally new concept in self monitored alarm systems. It combines a fully wireless alarm system with video snapshot verification. Using the state of the art smartphone app (or web browser) it allows you to fully control your alarm system remotely. You can view real time images taken with the PIR camera via the Risco cloud service. This amazing and innovative system gives
you total control - turn your alarm on and off remotely via your smartphone. See the last 250 alarm events with time and date stamps. The PIR cameras even have inbuilt infrared for low light or night time images. Free smartphone apps for Android and iPhone and free software for PC and MAC gives you flexibility on the run, wherever you are. No subscription fees, no ongoing costs and no back to base monitoring costs, simply connect via your existing internet connection or with a mobile data sim card. The system can be enhanced with a wide range of accessories that provide additional protection against theft and environmental hazards, as well as accessories for medical alerts and elderly care. The kids are alright Toowong Village David Jones expands to include childrenswear! Due to an increase in the number of young families living in Toowong and surrounding areas, Toowong Village David Jones have announced the return of its various children sections in store. David Jones has undergone remodelling on level one to include the store’s children, babies and infants wear, children’s shoes and toy departments, which are now open to the public. David Jones general manager for menswear and childrenswear, Deborah Foreman says the company is delighted to announce the return of childrenswear to the Toowong store. “Families in the area are now able to shop David Jones’ exclusive clothing, footwear and toys from brands including Indie Kids by Industrie, Bebe by Minihaha, Fox and Finch Girlswear, Pavement, Skip Hop and B.Toys, amongst many others,” she says. The revamp of David Jones’ offering is a part of the centre’s $50 million refurbishment, which will
see upgrades and fit out works across all three levels of the shopping centre, with completion scheduled for 2015. Toowong Village centre manager Kerri Jones says the addition provides young families with a convenient, local option and is another step closer to offering Toowong shoppers a tenancy mix that reflects their needs in a modern shopping environment. Retailers open with David Jones throughout the works include Coles, Kmart, along with a variety of specialty retailers including Ella Bache, Bank of Queensland, Telstra, Suncorp, Nextra, OPSM, Daisy’s Florist, Village Meats, Fruity Capers & Deli, Brisbane City Council Library and Terry White Chemists. We love the SmileSeeker app idea! How does it work? SmileSeeker is an app developed by Ethos, which can evaluate your smile and give you a recommendation of treatment. It’s done by first taking a photo of your smile and then answering questions about your lifestyle. The app then gives you a personalised report outlining your options, treatment costs and length of treatment. It even has an added mini game, called “cheeez”, which allows you to “swap smiles” and have a little fun with family and friends. What does it mean to have a great smile? A great smile means a great bite and healthy teeth. A great smile speaks volumes for a person’s confidence and can light up a room. Tell us about the Ethos lite treatment… We developed Ethos lite in recognition that less complicated cases can be completed in a much shorter time-frame (six to nine months) while still delivering beautiful long-lasting smiles. Instead of placing plastic or porcelain veneers on teeth, you can achieve a wonderful natural looking smile with your very own teeth!
Is it affordable? Yes! Treatment costs with Ethos lite are roughly 40% less than a full orthodontic treatment. Why is it better to see an orthodontist over a dentist? Orthodontists are boardregistered specialists who don’t do general dentistry and instead focus on achieving the best possible result for your smile in the most efficient time frame. Orthodontists are best equipped technically and academically. ethos orthodontics P 3349 5266 www.ethosorthodontics.com.au www.smileseekerapp.com.au Office Locations: Upper Mt Gravatt, Browns Plains, Algester, Loganholme, Clayfield Redcliffe, North Lakes, Toowong, Alexandra Hills.

for a close shave and a sharp hair do - head to
A guys guide to grooming
jimmy rod’s barber shop.
We sit down with Jimmy Rod’s founder, James ‘Jimmy’ O’Brien to find out what it takes to be a well-groomed, modern man. Why do you think it has become so popular for men to be well-groomed? Well, it’s the whole look. I think now there is a lot more variety in men’s fashion, guys can actually dress well. I started barbering 16 years ago and there weren’t many guys’ products out there yet. There was gel, hairspray and mousse. But now there is everything, from pomades to matte clay to moustache waxes. Beard oil! Who ever knew beard oil was going to take off? Do you think it’s a good thing that men are caring more about their grooming? I think it’s great. When I see a guy in a nice suit but his hairline looks terrible, I think, ‘Go to the barber shop and get a tidy up.’ I think it’s very important
for guys to maintain their hair style every two or three weeks. That’s why we don’t charge exorbitant prices. Do you have any other grooming tips? Wash your hair, regularly. If you are going to have a beard you need oil and beard balm, just for the sake of keeping that beard nourished and to stop the skin flaking underneath like dandruff. And mainly, be a gentleman. I think a lot of the chivalry has got to come back. Open a door for a stranger. Say hello to someone walking down the street. The whole idea about being a gentleman goes from your clothes, to your hair, to your personality - it’s about the whole package.
James O’Brien, owner of Jimmy Rod’s Barber Shop styling yet another well-groomed guy.

Style chats to dapper brothers in business, Michael and Mark about how looking sharp goes a long way in the world of finance.
“Being in financial services, it’s good to express some individuality to help stand out from the rest.”
36
Do you think a good sense of style helps in the business world? Michael: Yes. People notice when you take care in your appearance. When you look good, you feel sharp. This often translates into your work ethic. Mark: And, being in financial services, it’s good to express some individuality to help stand out from the rest. What’s your go-to fashion item? Mark: Blue linen jacket and my angry boots. Michael: Crisp white business shirt or white V-neck tee. Do you follow any fashion rules? Michael: Not really – wear what you want. Mark: If most people think it’s wrong, it’s probably right.
Whose celebrity style do you admire? Mark: So cliché but David Beckham knows how to roll. Michael: Ryan Gosling. Any fashion faux pas? Mark: ‘Matchy-matchy’. Michael: Tan shoes with a black suit. Your favourite Brisbane men’s store? Mark: Recently Ted Baker, Calibre, Marcs and DJ’s. Michael: The Cloakroom and Pistols at Dawn. Where can we find you… On your day off? Mark: Golf course, good food, friends. Michael: In lycra cycling around Brissy. On a Saturday night? Mark: Socialising somewhere. Michael: With my wife.

Style had the pleasure of meeting Brisbane sisters from the independent band Sheppard, (known for their hit singles ‘Hey Geronimo’ and ‘Let Me Down Easy’) before they jet off overseas! Amy, the lead vocalist and Emma, the bassist believe Sheppard has helped their style evolve, and believe being on-stage it’s just amplified. Amy describes her style as part grunge, part rock, with something a little bit different, mentioning she always wears her “awesome flares by Miracle Eye”. Emma says she likes solid colours and pastels or “anything that gives off a 60s or 90s vibe,” adding that sunglasses are her ultimate weakness. The girls look to upcoming
designers for inspiration. “We follow lots of bloggers too, especially on Instagram,” says Emma. On tour the girls recycle and swap clothes and accessories. Their most treasured tour piece are their matching Metallic Tom Gun ankle boots. “Amy has already gone through two pairs!” says Emma. “We always jump around in change rooms when buying new clothes, to test if they’ll last a show,” says Amy. Sheppard will soon meet their new American manager Scooter Braun (Justin Bieber’s manager) in LA, with the girls mentioning they are more excited about a possible Ellen Show gig than meeting the ‘Biebz’. www.wearesheppard.com www.blondevenus.com.au

There’s no doubt the Brisbane Arcade is buzzing with Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival fever, and it’s intensifying by the day. Queensland designer royalty will take over the Arcade with tulle, silk, sequins, lace and hairspray as they put their awe-inspiring Spring/Summer collections forward. The Arcade has been home to Queensland’s most esteemed designers since 1923, and their grand reputation will be cemented once again at the festival. Arcade designers have styled international superstars like Liza Minnelli and Jennifer Hawkins but many choose to design, retail and manufacture from Brisbane putting the city on the world map in the high-end fashion industry.

Abby: Bridge to Brisbane
abby’s parents were avid fun
Last year I ran the Bridge to Brisbane’s 10km fun run. My training beforehand was close to dismal, but I even surprised myself with my effort on the day. I completed the 10km in just over sixty minutes! I’ll be pregnant for this year’s race, which means I won’t be able to improve my time. However, I’ve hatched a plan to make sure that Labby, Stav and I are still a part of it! All the money we fund raise will go towards the B105 Christmas Appeal, raising money for the Royal Children’s Hospital. Listen to B105 to find out how to get involved.
runners and always said abby would complete a race one day. she’s glad she did!
the B105 wrap up Labby notes the apps to keep your photographic memories fresh, Stav shares why he’ll love this year’s Father’s Day gifts and Abby prepares to tackle a fun run...again!
Labby: Insta-worthy If you are like me, all of your photos live on your phone or on social media…here’s a couple of cool apps I’ve discovered to help bring your photos to life.
Stav: Father’s Day This is my second Father’s Day I’m celebrating. My daughter Rori is only 20 months old, so this is a great opportunity to get what I want for Father’s Day. Seeing as she is too young to buy me a present, I’m going to take advantage of this fact for all intents and purposes, and I’m sure I will love Rori’s gifts (actually bought by my wife). I figure I have years of crappy gifts ahead… Carton of beer? Thanks Rori! Tickets to the footy? Thanks Rori! A night at the grandparents so I can have a Sunday morning hangover? Thanks Rori!
Origrami Print your Instagram photos in polaroid format and receive them in a camera themed box, perfect for displaying on the coffee table. You can pick the size, theme and even have the map location or the date printed on the back. Check their app or visit www.origrami.com.

‘WEAR’ your face with pride A new boutique studio experience by an Australian makeup artist is helping Brisbane-ites master their first impressions. We ‘wear’ our faces everyday, so Australian makeup and hair stylist Lily Fontana has devised makeup and skincare workshops so we can invest in our features and ultimately boost our confidence! The workshops held at Lily’s new premises in Camp Hill teach life-long skills to protect and enhance our skin and beauty to feel more confident in ourselves and around others. Lily’s successful 15 year career has seen her work on local and international films, fashion awards, editorial fashion shoots, weddings, corporate videos and even music concerts featuring Kanye West, Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliot. Lily says the workshops have been designed specifically to make the art of applying makeup simple and effective.

The workshops are ‘hands-on’
“Let me show you the tips and techniques that I’ve learned and applied in my career so you can be your own makeup artist, every day. “The workshops are ‘hands-on’, informative and take you step by step through the process of makeup application – whether it be for a ‘barely there’, natural look, a classic day look, or a more glamorous evening look,” she says. The Lily Fontana Makeup and Skincare Workshop Studio is by appointment only and enquiries about workshops or to purchase skincare or cosmetic products contact Lily.

Perfecting the big day Candice Jackson chats to Brisbane Polo Club’s new wedding coordinator, Shanna Malcolm on her role, the club’s hidden gems and wedding advice. Why Brisbane Polo Club? After working in the beautiful Gold Coast Hinterland for Peppers for 3.5 years, I decided it was time for me to head back to the inner city for a new challenge. When the opportunity came up at the Brisbane Polo Club I jumped at the chance to work in such a prestigious Club and further hone my skills. Your role? A wedding coordinator does so much more than collate information and coordinate the function, you tend to get emotionally involved with the couple and their family- for the good and bad times. Sometimes you have to act as a buffer when things don’t go to plan, but in the end the final product always brings a tear to my eyes. What are you most excited for? The beautiful heritage building is a dream for styling, which
you tend to get emotionally involved Wedding coordinator Shanna Malcolm
with the couple and their family
I don’t think has been fully discovered by Brisbane’s brides yet… so I am really excited about spreading the word and opening the doors. Hidden features at Brisbane Polo Club? It offers an amazing grand ballroom fitted with gold antique chandeliers and hides a stunning sandstone cellar perfect for smaller weddings and engagement parties. Important advice? I always want to make sure couples are creating a celebration that is
uniquely their own. As tradition is no longer necessary, I strongly recommend couples make decisions based on what they want, not what is expected. The outcome is always a fresh, personal experience that is treasured by the couple. Brisbane Polo Club 193 Mary St, The City P 3229 3766 www.brisbanepoloclub.com.au

We brought glam to the event by using splashes of gold on the guest tables with the candelabras, candlesticks, gold leaf vases and the use of gold and crystal clear Napoleon chairs alongside a base linen of soft pink satin, matching the pink fresh florals. The ceiling draping was the ‘wow factor’, consisted of soft white draping in a star formation as a base, with added festoon lighting, fairy lights and paper lanterns to create a feeling of ethereal romance. Your favourite styled elements of this wedding? I absolutely adored the sequin cloths used on the bridal table and the sequin chevron runners on the guest tables, but I just can’t go past that ceiling - just, wow!
the full ceiling was draped in soft fabric and featured fairy lights.

What does the role of Head Stylist include? The role is very busy – and every day it’s different! I’m either in the office, the studio or out on site assisting with styling sets. Walk us through the process of this wedding… Firstly, I had an initial consultation with the bride, the groom and the bride’s mother to determine their vision for the wedding. By using the bride’s inspiration images I put together a detailed styling quote and image board to ensure we were on the same track. We then created a uniquely glamorous but slightly bohemian style to the wedding, by focusing on a soft colour palette with a hint of sparkle, fresh flowers, tea light candles and an eclectic full ceiling draping wrapped in fairy lights.

Let her make cake Trina is truly a master of her craft transforming cakes into edible art! Make your dream wedding cake a reality with Trina Thomson’s innovative creations.
Talented artist, Trina Thomson, was studying animation and illustration at university until she stumbled across her true passion. “My B.A. in Fine Arts led me through many creative professions until I discovered the delights of baking, designing, decorating and sculpting gorgeous cakes and sugar adornments,” she says. “It has been the perfect marriage.” With her business Sweet Ruby Cakes, Trina has made everything from opulent wedding cakes to niche birthday party cakes. She’s even taken a stab at the Iron Throne with amazing results!
“The design process is really exciting,” she says. “Sourcing ideas and inspirations, and thinking of compositions. Then there is the hard work in the middle – baking, filling, putting it all together - and finally placing the finishing touches and the details that make it sing.” All of Trina’s works are incredibly intricate, but she says it’s easier than it looks. “It’s not hard, but some techniques do take practice and patience. I always find students at my classes so stunned they could complete such a great cake, but when you build a design step by step it becomes very
manageable and easy to understand.” Trina has been invited to teach in London and America, and regularly offers classes right here in Brisbane at Wandering Cooks in West End. Trina says she loves spreading “the Sweet Ruby cake love” by finding innovative ways to celebrate weddings and other important milestones in her clients’ lives. Adam prefers using well-cut stones and unique gems to create one-off pieces.
special stones This new man cave, burrowed in the Brisbane Arcade, encourages men to get involved with the creation of the perfect ring for the ‘big day’. We all know men would rather work with their hands than spend hours shopping with their partner and a man cave in the Brisbane Arcade has recently popped up especially designed to cater for these men (and their partners!). Adam Graham opened his Designer Jeweller store in May specialising in handmade engagement rings, unique one-off pieces and remodelling existing jewellery. Adam says men can often find jewellery stores quite foreign. “The design of the store was really driven by making men feel more comfortable around jewellery,” he says. The industrial chic workshop space provides a more relaxed store environment than traditional jewellers. Men can lounge on the leather chairs or crack open a beer from the mini bar in the store’s open plan layout and office, while discussing their customisable vision with Adam.
Beginning his career as a jewellery trade apprentice in a creative workshop, Adam’s passion for jewellery has quickly grown and he’s been busy the last 12 months expanding the business. Adam says he encourages every client to get involved with their own pieces, mentioning a recent client who wanted to create the wedding bands for his fiancé and completed some of the manufacturing steps himself. Adam prefers using well-cut stones and unique gems to create one-off pieces that are special to each new client. “One of the greatest things about having a handmade workshop is speaking to clients and making sure nothing gets lost in translation,” he says. Weddings are a joyous occasion. But tying the knot also means considering some important issues to ensure lifelong happiness. Discussing pre-nuptial agreements, renewing your will and confirming your power of attorney may seem tedious among the flower arranging, cake selections , and dress fittings. But they’re just as important! Also, if you’re planning a lavish wedding, are you running the supplier contracts past a solicitor to check you’re not getting cheated? More to think about than you thought, right? If you need some advice before your big day, see the team at Aylward Game Solicitors.

Simply Amazing Find real, lasting results from the skin care range pulled straight from the earth. The beauty market is saturated with products claiming miracle cures. But most of these claims are just that - claims. Most products are packed with so many fillers, such as silicones and crude oil by-products, they do as much for you as a bar of regular household soap. Back when former Channel Nine newsreader Robin Lyons was on camera daily, constantly taking off and putting on make-up, she began suffering from terrible skin irritations. She’d tried everything from over the counter products to medicated Cortisone creams – even balms from high-end brands. It wasn’t until a friend recommended a local naturopath that Robin found the results she was looking for. “David gave me one of his medicinal creams, I woke up the next morning and all the redness was gone,” she says. “It was unbelievable. But he always amazes me.

Sugary delight
want to be hair-free... by summer? check out
The only thing you’ll gain with this sugar treatment is a smoother, hairless you! Long thick tresses are great for hair commercials, but not on your legs! Winter might be the perfect opportunity to hide hairy legs, but come summer you’ll want to opt for a smooth, hair free body, so why not start now? The Sugar Studio has recently popped up in Bulimba and offers a process called ‘body sugaring’, which is a form of hair removal with comparable results to waxing and IPL treatments. The store is run by Body Sugaring Australia’s Queensland master trainer Shamara Rata. The relatively new hair removal method in the beauty industry is explained by Shamara as an allnatural, eco-friendly sugary paste of a toffee like consistency with permanent hair reduction results. Applied by using the SMOOTHER™ applicator against the hair growth and removing in the natural direction of hair growth, the paste removes hair from the root, avoiding snapping or breakage of
brisbane’s newest treatment!
hair follicles prematurely. Less aggressive on the skin than IPL laser treatments or waxing, Shamara says with body sugaring you can see results fast, adding she would never go back to waxing. “I inherited really strong, dark hairs from my dad - not nice for a lady! But, sugaring treatments have dramatically diminished my hair growth, especially on my legs,” Shamara says. She says if you have enough hair to shave, they’re long enough to be sugared and the results couldn’t get much sweeter- no hairy legs by summer! Keep an eye out for the launch of the Sugar Studio’s website in early August, below. The Sugar Studio 204 Oxford St, Bulimba P 3319 6760 www.thesugarstudio.com.au www.bodysugaringaustralia.com

Samantha Marsh has merged her experience working for designer fashion houses with a degree in health science and nutritional medicine to create a truly natural and luxurious skin and hair care line, Quite Frankly Natural. Coming from a luxury background, Samantha always appreciated beautiful products for the bathroom, but she found the current natural skincare ranges were lacking. “There’s some really good stuff out there, but they’re really unappealing. The two big things that I wanted to bring together was natural and luxury,” she says. night treatment oils and a hair and scalp treatment. Being truly natural is important for Samantha, as she believes the current market is misleading consumers with untrue natural claims. “For example, the front of the bottle might say ‘SLS (Sodium Laureth Sulfate) free’ but the ingredients contain similar chemicals, such as Ammonium Laureth and Lauryl Sulfate,” she says. If you don’t understand a product’s ingredient, it’s important to look it up for yourself and Samantha encourages people to Google her own ingredients, which are all 100% natural and chosen from the best quality sources. Rebecca Burling, of Fusion Wellbeing says people tend to think going to the gym is the ‘be all, end all’, but it will not give you the benefits of a PT or specialised training.

Exercise classes
Remedial Massage Remedial massage therapists at Fusion provide specific therapeutic treatments to restore function, remove pain and reduce tension and stress on the body.
“Variety is key. Our bodies enjoy diversity and they perform better on different routines and programs,” Rebecca says. Special offer: For only $79 enjoy a one-hour Winterlicious Facial Treatment, to rejuvenate and nourish Winter skin!
Jane Schon met the new team at Ella Baché Paddington, and got some winter skincare tips too! You’ve been in the industry for 22 years Kerri, you must love it… Kerri: I do. It’s a funny thing; I think Ella Baché gets in your blood. I love that Ella Baché is based around championing women, and the strength of what we can do in the beauty industry. Plus it’s family owned, as is this business – my sister Vicki and I own it together. Why Paddington? Kerri: Paddington’s been my local area for the last ten or 11 years, so when this opportunity came up it was too good to be true. Lorren: And we love the clients – everyone’s so appreciative. In shopping centres there’s a higher turn over but you don’t build that rapport with people. Do you all practice what you preach? Erica: Yes definitely. Once you see the results, you
want to do it for yourself. I love the scientific side of things, which is probably why I love Ella Baché so much. A lot of research goes into making the products. Which product can’t you live without in winter? Erica: The 50+ Lipsaver, for sure! When your lips get chapped it’s the sun doing the damage as well, so you need that protection. Lorren: Great Tan Without Sun. You just feel so much better when you’ve got that golden glow about you. Kerri: The Hydra-Revitalising Repair Balm, the hydrating mask. It’s like a glass of water for your skin. Particularly in this weather it’s perfect.
Meet the team: Erica, Kerri and Lorren.
Kerri says this balm is perfect for winter. It uses lots of hydration elements like Hyaluronic Acid mixed with sea minerals to energise the skin.

Home Revival
the new design space has made this home almost unrecognisable ...wow!
Transforming spaces Knocking down the barriers between indoor and outdoor living areas. Queenslanders know the importance of having an inviting outdoor dining and entertainment area, but the real value lies within making that outdoor area an extension of the interior space, rather than an add on. Two home occupants in Carindale had previously become frustrated with their home’s original layout and décor, its lack of flow between the indoor living areas and their inability to take advantage of their adjoining outdoor space for regular use, family occasions and large gatherings. They presented their design challenge to merge the 1980s property façade with a collection of three small rooms to Kim Duffin, the principal designer at Sublime Architectural Interiors. stylemagazines.com.au
Kim says the internal walls were the first to go and with the addition of structural support, it revealed a large open plan area to begin the design process from. “The end result meant we could blur the lines between kitchen, living and outdoor dining and entertainment, which was the desired design outcome,” he says. The kitchen was relocated to be closer to the action and is now a focal point for the Carindale home. Where using the kitchen was once closed off and isolated, it has now become more social, with the ability to have constant contact with anyone in the multiple indoor or outdoor living spaces. The kitchen’s new generous proportions in bench length and
Design advice by Sublime Architectural Interiors
The undisputed heart of the home is the kitchen. Many functions are performed in this space and the most important element to any kitchen design is its function. distances between cabinets, matched with the 900mm Ilve oven, creates a space that encourages and accommodates multiple users in a true ‘two person’ kitchen. A large island, with a feature natural stone table, has been used to gently divide the kitchen, living and dining spaces, with a wine fridge and beverage centre strategically placed in the island for ease of access. A feature piece of Emperador natural stone was used on the
table to give the kitchen a touch of glamour and texture, which, with the chocolate pendants highlights the elements contained in the design. The neutral colour palette was also chosen to complement the existing exterior of the home and to allow the flow around the adjoining spaces to remain uninterrupted, bringing the great outdoors, indoors. “although the kitchen is modern we still feel like it ties into the house.”
Social Style Achieving functionality and style, Jane Schon chats with Melissa Downes about her chic new kitchen and how she tackled the major renovation. It looks like the design is very practical, was that the main thing you were focused on or was it the style? Style was definitely part of it, but we did want a functioning kitchen. We wanted something that was open and would last for years. We love having friends over and we just found the kitchen before limited that. The Teppanyaki plate is the best example. Someone can be sitting there cooking while everyone is sitting at the bar on the outside, but they are still part of the conversation. It’s quite modern for a classic home, where did your inspiration come from? We just looked through magazines and tore out the pages we liked. We wanted to stay true to the house. It’s just
so sweet and we wanted to maintain that. Like we kept the subway tiles - that sort of traditional element - because they are in our bathroom upstairs. So although the kitchen is modern we still feel like it ties into the house. Did you get any inspiration from The Block as well? I did. I am a massive fan of The Block. Very excited the new season has started too. Having just lived through the kitchen, bathroom
and laundry renovation, I have no idea how they do what they do in a week. It’s insane. Any plans for the rest of the house? Next is upstairs. We’d like to do a walk in wardrobe. Then curtains. We just have to save a bit more money READ MORE ONLINE again now. We spent it all on the kitchen and laundry (laughs). So now we are saving!

Advantages of using a decorator

Benefits of using a decorator
QIDA provides their members with information via workshops and regular product updates to ensure they are as informed as possible. They are advised of industry related events, product launches and latest innovations. All this information allows them to assist you with your project in whatever capacity you see fit.
Decorators and Designers choose their career because they have a natural talent for putting decorative ideas together. Some of them have a preferred style. Others can put their hand to any style that is required of them. With the knowledge they obtain from their continuous research, their job is to help you create the space you dream of.
Can I afford a decorator?
By choosing to use a Decorator you will: • Receive the most up to date information on the latest innovations and products • Create the most practical and beautiful space without making costly errors • Visit trade houses and see new and beautiful items which would not normally be available to you • Visit an array of fabric houses, choose beautiful fabrics and have your furniture upholstered in a special and unique way • Receive the bonus of trade discount and access to true and tried building professionals • Be introduced to a range of renovating specialists who can answer your questions and help make your renovating a stress free experience.
Definitely ‘Yes’. Rates for decorators vary from $70 per hour up to $160 per hour. In the first instance, you need to spend time researching to find the decorator to best suit your needs. Call more than one, ask them about rates and how they can best help you. Also ask to see photos and maybe ask for referees. Previous happy clients will assure you that your choice is the right one. Transparency on how charges are calculated will give you the confidence to work alongside your decorator with ease knowing that costs will not get out of hand. Quite often, two to three hours with a decorator will get you on track, assist you with colour choices, solve many of your problems immediately and ensure you are not making costly mistakes. Building on Success Ever wanted more from your builder? This Queensland specialist builder tackles the jobs most builders wouldn’t dream of… There are some true gems in property real estate out there up for grabs, with great views, or within inner-city locations or growth areas, because the sites are being labelled ‘too hard’. Evermore Designed Homes don’t believe in ‘too hard’, instead believing in challenging and rewarding properties. Here are three traditionally difficult sites that they’re building their success on:
Evermore Designed Homes’ house on sloped land (above) and a small lot property (inset).
Small lots Evermore Designed Homes have designs that prove narrow lot living is more than what you’d expect. Innovative design solutions consider client’s desires for maximum livability and space, better privacy and the ability for the house size to blend in with surrounding properties.
Major Renovations
Sloped land Sloped land can deter people due to the lack of vision it inspires and extra building costs that may occur. Evermore Designed Homes works with clients to provide a cost-effective process to create a property with a value and view worth the effort.
Many homeowners are remodelling properties into something more modern and profitable. Current popular renovations are the raising of properties to add extra floors or garage ports, the demolition of certain aspects of a house to improve the flow or incorporate a modern open plan living design.

That’s DNA genes, not the blue ones! In 1892 Dr. Osler stated, “varicose veins are the result of an improper selection of grandparents”. While he wasn’t wrong in saying the development of varicose veins can be all about your genes, we don’t have the luxury of changing who we’ve inherited certain genes from. Varicose veins develop due to venous disease, which can cause incompetence in the vein valves and walls resulting in blood not flowing correctly through the system in your legs. This is the part you can blame your grandparents for; individuals who have one parent with varicose veins are more likely to develop the condition, however, if both of your parents suffer with them, you have a 90 per cent chance of developing varicose veins. Treatment options have moved on since 1892 and although surgical stripping is still available, the more modern techniques of EndoVenous Laser and Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy are now well established as the global gold standard in the management of varicose veins.
Most see a Will as a complicated document filled with confusing legal jargon, but these days the Court is prepared to uphold a Will sealed with technology, rather than wax. The rules are relaxed in Queensland by section 18 of the Succession Act 1981, allowing the Court to ignore formal signing requirements. In a recent case, Mr Karter Yu died shortly after creating a document on his iPhone intended as his Will. The Court needed to question whether this document legally constituted the Deceased’s Will before it was accepted. They needed to confirm if it could be considered a ‘document’, whether the document accurately stated the Deceased’s testamentary intentions and if the document was indeed intended to be Mr Yu’s Will. Conclusively, the document was deemed valid. Despite the Court’s preparedness to ‘keep up with the times’, it is imperative your Will be written carefully and accurately to ensure its proper implementation. If you’re considering this path, we advise you still seek a solicitor or accountant’s assistance, to draft this vital document.
Tapping into your inner-interior designer or artist is possible, but for some it’s hard to find the inspiration or confidence to translate an idea into art. I always hear people say “Oh, I’m not ‘arty’ like you”, but really what they mean is that they don’t spend their days looking at colour and art the way I get to. So then, when they do decide to put something on the wall or decorate, they feel uncertain. Probably a bit how I feel if I ever walk into a gym - it’s not my natural, comfort zone! With some expert help and a few key tips, you can quite easily unlock the secret to finding your inner interior designer, like looking at art, furniture and admiring beautiful room settings. 1. Look around - visit showrooms, browse the internet and see what’s on offer. 2. Look carefully - sometimes the combinations of colour, texture and proportion of the things you like are the secret. 3. Ask for help - Us ‘arty’ people love to share and discuss colour and style!

Clinical skin needling treatments are loved by all, due to the undeniable visible results. However, amazing results can be achieved by using homecare rollers regularly. These rollers work by creating lots of micro-channels, which allow for better product penetration. The combination of a homecare roller and a serum containing collagen stimulating ingredients improves your skins texture and helps plump fine lines and wrinkles. Performance ingredients best infused are Hyaluronic acid and serums containing peptides. Hyaluronic acid is a skin hydrator with the ability to hold 1000 times its own molecular weight in moisture, leaving skin feeling smooth and plump immediately. Peptides have the ability to support skin function by improving collagen production, providing protective regenerative and wound healing benefits, treating premature ageing and aiding in skin regeneration after clinic treatments. Using these ingredients every second day with homecare rollers speed up skin results and can be easily integrated with skin routines.
Motivating your loved one to get healthy can be an uphill battle and watching them struggle with health or weight concerns can be even more painful. However, if you focus on being their biggest supporter, rather than their biggest critic, you will see a positive attitude shift. Giving lectures about losing weight can have a negative effect on your loved one. If you’re concerned about their health, lead by example and integrate healthy habits into your routine. Find activities that you both enjoy that involve movement, such as dancing in the living room or working in the garden. Once you start incorporating these steps into your day, focus on outcomes other than just weight loss. Ask questions like ‘How did you feel after the walk we went on this morning?’ or try positive comments such as ‘You seem to have so much energy lately!’ Motivating an unhealthy loved one can be a difficult situation to navigate. Find some extra tips to help your partner live a healthier, longer, better quality life on our website.
Wellbeing requires your mind and body to be in good shape. With daily engagement in a variety of actions, you promote integration and enable your brain to coordinate and balance its activities. This is great for the short to medium term and even more fabulous for the ageing process. Don’t you want to be fun, healthy, and cognitively sharp in your golden years? I do! To optimise brain function and create wellbeing, you need the following: • Sleep time (eight hours) to let your brain rest and recover from experiences of the day. • Physical time to move your body, aerobically if possible, which strengthens the brain. • Focused time to concentrate on tasks in a goal-oriented way. • Reflective time (mindfulness) to attend internally and focus on you. • Down time (chillaxing) without any specific goal. • Play time to allow yourself to be spontaneous. • Connecting time to bond with other people and to connect with nature.

GETTING STARTED IN PROPERTY
Compared to the talented people beside me, mine is a field that doesn’t return the visual compensation an Architect, Artist or Skin Practitioner can provide. What I can do is assist with setting clear goals and objectives, and work with clients to achieve them. My process is: • What is the goal? • Why is it a goal? • When is it to be achieved? • What is the cost of the goal? • How is it to be achieved? My comfort zone is to educate my clients on the importance of focussing on every stage of life and planning for challenges that may take us unaware. The ultimate jigsaw begins to take shape when all the pieces are fitted together: Which piece is to go where, when, how and why, then cost that. Choosing to care about my clients is my personal mantra – it is a very personal field and we operate from a basis of respect.
Here at Alcyon Hair and Beauty, we’re reviving the halcyon days of old where attending a beauty salon meant embarking on a truly luxurious experience not just a haircut. This month’s taste of luxury comes from our friends at Kerastase, with its latest Bath, Care and In-Salon Service that promises to de-frizz and control undisciplined hair. The humidity resistant Protocole Discipline is the latest in-salon treatment. Enriched with Morpho-KeratinTM, it creates long-lasting results even after 10 shampoos and it makes blowdrying twice as fast. This gorgeous treatment doesn’t chemically alter the hair. Instead it richly restores discipline to the hair shaft by nourishing each strand. Maintaining it is easy with the Bain and Fondant Discipline to use at home for 28 days. We’re looking forward to welcoming Style readers to visit our salon and sample the Kerastase Discipline range available in August. After all, if you look good you feel confident, and we all know confidence exudes beauty.
Residential investment property has been used for many years to offset tax through negative gearing and depreciation. While there can be benefits with this strategy, buying for this reason alone can be seriously flawed. Successful property investment is ultimately about achieving long-term capital growth, and consistent and attractive net yields. However, it’s crucial to understand not all properties are created equal. Some factors to consider are: Location & Demand: Close to employment, education and hospitals, infrastructure, transport, lifestyle amenities and areas with low rental supply versus high rental demand. Quality & Design: High quality materials and finishes inside and out, along with thoughtful and smart design, offering a feeling of abundant space and light. Size & Savings: Smaller boutique developments with large apartment and balcony sizes, low body corp fees, and high quality finishes often achieve higher yields and better capital growth over large high-rise developments.

Creating the wow factor
design before you buy
Purchasing a New Car
Themes are a great way to create a unique and memorable function. However, bringing together an overall theme can be a challenge, especially when there is a strict budget. Colour plays an important supporting role with items like chair sashes, napkins and table runners. The key is to create a grand, initial wow factor, which sets the tone and cements the theme immediately. A single, large showpiece works really well in capturing that initial attention and focusing the feel of the occasion. For a recent Samba Nights event, we installed massive palm trees festooned with lights in the middle of the Convention Centre. While they were supported by brightly coloured styling elements in the cloths, chairs, bunting and lights, it was the trees that everyone remembered. Over the years we’ve seen massive fish suspended from ceilings, towering ice-sculptures as well as a life-sized baby elephant constructed out of moss, succulents and orchards. There is no boundary to the impact you can have.
Often the need to replace a particular appliance in the kitchen prompts people to make the decision to renovate the space. Most homeowners think that selecting appliances is the first port of call, however it should almost be your last. I have found that a lot of people have purchased appliances before they have even had a discussion with a designer about the functionality required for their new kitchen. Appliances are a part of this functionality, not the basis of it. Once you have decided on how the space will work, then you can consider appliances that are going to enhance the space and provide convenience. Did you know that you can test drive appliances before you buy? Talk to your appliance retailer about when their next cooking demonstration night is that will feature the appliances you are considering. You will then be able to make sure your selection is right for you. Appliances can be expensive, so only purchase what you will use not what looks good.
Buying a new car is a serious investment and can be confusing and time-consuming. My top tips for making the best purchase decisions are: • Be aware of your needs and requirements and decide on a car that suits your lifestyle. Do you have children or pets? Are you retired? • Do some research online before visiting the dealerships. You will be better prepared regarding prices, inclusions and extras you may wish to purchase. • Set a budget – whether it is for the total vehicle price or how much you can afford in repayments each week or month, and stick to it. • Research your finance options. Brands such as Mercedes-Benz have various finance options available, including buy-back programs. • Create a good rapport with your salesperson. Don’t be afraid to ask to deal with a different representative if your personalities clash. • Be in a position to make a decision at the dealership. Bring your significant other with you to avoid having to leave and phone them; and have a deposit ready to secure the best deal.

EVER BEEN LOCKED out without a key or been away from the office when you need to let someone in? The team at Network Locksmiths & Security have the solution. The amazing new Clay by SALTO, is a wireless, cloud-based locking system and is now available. This ground breaking technology is suitable for small to medium businesses and home owners. You can remotely manage when different Clay tag holders are authorised to enter the building by creating access groups. If a tag is lost or stolen it can be blocked remotely in real time. When you need to let someone in who doesn’t have a Clay Tag, pull out your smartphone, select the door to open, key in your passcode and open the door! It’s intuitive, flexible and it simply works. No software installation required, secured logins ensure the ultimate protection.
The new financial year is here and it’s time to recount on the previous year’s performance and look toward to the year ahead. For most small and medium businesses, the last quarter has the potential to be the most profitable reporting period, so now is the ideal time to revisit marketing strategies and capitalise on the upcoming spending spree. We suggest our clients start by reflecting on what product or service generated the highest revenues historically. Consider previous trends, in line with an analysis of “who” and “why” will form the foundation for key call to actions. Once determined, this message should be integrated into above line, online, direct and social channel campaigns, for growth and to generate excitement within the active customer base. Our top tip is to set this time of year aside to focus on re-engagement of any customer inactive since Christmas. Most importantly, be sure to track your results and how each advertising medium performed so you can continue to build on knowledge and momentum.

TRAVEL Win a night’s stay in a Garden Buree room for two people. Simply ‘Like’ the Garden Burees on Facebook and look out for the Style Magazine post!
Girls in the garden Sarah McAlpine talks Balinese décor; pamper packages and a love affair with the heated plunge pool of the Garden Burees of Byron Bay. It was exactly the escape we needed. Following an exhausting few months, three other Style gals and I packed up the car and drove off mid-Friday afternoon for a well-deserved weekend away at our favourite holiday hotspot, Byron Bay. After a comfortable drive, we arrived to our own little slice of paradise. The Garden Burees offer a range of appetising accommodation options; perfect for an intimate weekend away with that special someone, getting back to nature for a solo sabbatical or a glamorous getaway with your favourite girlfriends. We opted for the Grande Buree; a three bedroom, three bathroom luxury villa that sleeps up to seven people across it’s spacious double levels. Reminiscent of the extravagant kind of holiday house you’d expect to find in Seminyak or Ubud, we were greeted with intricate carved timber furnishings, an abundance of beautiful living space and, most importantly, a private plunge pool with separate hot and cold sections. We ventured into the heart of Byron (just a short seven-minute walk) to experience the vibrant hippie town, but truth-be-told; this brought on anxiety-inducing FOMO, directly associated with wanting more quality time with the spa. It wasn’t all Champagne and backyard bliss, though. We also dabbled in Sauvignon blanc and headed next door to the Buddha Gardens 96
Jade and Sarah
Balinese Day Spa. Here we split up to experience rejuvenating facials, aromatherapy massages and the most amazing specially blended teas I’ve ever tasted. Their extraordinary treatment menu contains an assortment of feel-good fixes for your skin and body, and the tropical rainforest surrounds make you feel like you’ve floated into an oriental oasis. The whole weekend would have made for a perfect hens party for those wanting privacy, gorgeous scenery and a serene, relaxing vibe – with plenty of party options located nearby. Want all of that, but for a smaller party? There are plenty of other accommodation options, including the romantic Garden Burees, which boasts an indoor double spa bath, private outdoor shower and heated slate floors to beat the winter chill. Even more in touch with nature, Dragonfly’s Rest has a stunning outdoor bathroom complete with a claw foot bath for stargazing. The Gallery Studio will indulge your inner beach bum and sleeps three, while the Birdsong Hideaway is a serene chill-out pad perfect for up to five people. Italian refinement Lucy Stephens discovers the Maserati Quattroporte Diesel creates a new kind of stirring sensation under the bonnet. Italian men and Italian sports cars; two closely related objects of desire that have a biological effect on women worldwide. While one can assume it’s true with the likes of George Clooney, when it comes to a Maserati, it’s a fact that’s been scientifically proven. A study conducted by a British insurance company tested the revving of car engines on the ears of women, and after hearing the Maserati, the female subjects measured higher testosterone levels in their blood. The Maserati is celebrating its centenary this year, launching new variants with a wider price spectrum and an aim to offer a variant and model in every luxury car sector by 2020. One of the newest releases is the Maserati Quattroporte Diesel – the first ever diesel Maserati. I took it for a scenic test drive from Lismore to Brisbane, via Nimbin and Northern New South Wales. The turbocharged V6 diesel engine affects the signature roar of the engine slightly (unfortunately), but doesn’t affect the handling. Winding roads and long strides across open country are effortlessly manoeuvred at top speeds despite the somewhat 98
heavier diesel engine under the bonnet. But for me, style trumps just about any other factor a car could offer – and the Maserati Quattroporte has bucketloads. Customisation includes dashboard detailing in five types of wood, seven types of exterior paint options and four leather colours. From the outside, it gathers the attention you’d expect from a Maserati, with a sleek physique and iconic Maserati trident badge beaming like a beacon from the wide-mouthed grille. Unlike many sports cars, there’s plenty of legroom in both the front and back of the car, and the boot is ample too. The beauty of the diesel engine means you can navigate from the urban household to the country weekender in style and on one tank of fuel. While it may not quite have the testosteroneinducing purr of the non-diesel types, the actions of the Maserati speak louder than words. And at $200k ($40k less than the next variant) the Maseratti Quattroporte is for those with a lot of style, a lot of dollars - and a lot of sense. www.maserati.com.au
