THE POWERHOUSE Style sat down with three-time kickboxing and Thai boxing world champion Ian Jacobs to talk fitness secrets, budgie smugglers and what makes him tick. RETURNING TO KICKBOXING after eight years of retirement to raise funds for his terminally ill father, Brisbane-raised Ian Jacobs broke the world record in 2009 for the fastest knockout in history — 1.8 seconds. Described by the commentator as having “more muscles than a seafood platter”, it’s hard to imagine that the now retired Ian is fitter than ever – and he is giving back all he has learnt with his program called the World Champion Experience. How did it feel when you knocked out The Headhunter? At first I thought he was going to get up, but he didn’t and the reality set in. I felt really proud — my dad was sick and watching it at home, so I did it for him. If you could fight one person? Floyd Mayweather.

If you had one favourite exercise? Xilr8 — my own secret exercise which forces blood through my body and releases endorphins like no exercise can. Your go-to cardio exercise? I can’t say in the magazine, but interval sprinting definitely helps! What’s your go-to ab workout? Long straight power punching.. and laughing (of course). What’s the biggest workout myth? That not eating and generalised gym programs are the best. They have the fundamental basics but the best trainers provide customised programs. Last thing you shamefully Googled? Floyd Mayweather’s first name — I had a mind blank! Budgie smugglers or boardies? Boardies What’s your hidden talent? Performance driving. Late night guilty snack? Chocolate (all day, every day, and night... and in between). If you could invite five people in the world to a dinner party who would they be? My Dad (Bill Jacobs), Muhammad Ali, Bill Gates, Madonna and Nelson Mandela.

Fast Five with Ian.. Bar? Prohibition. Cafe/Restaurant? Blackbird. Drink? Double vodka and soda with fresh lemon and lime. Workout food? I’m a supplements man – Supergreens and natural protein. Mens fashion store? Wil Valor and Urbbana.

IN MY WORDS Tracy Johnston, Style founder, head of custom publishing and fashion editor gives us an insight into what makes her tick (tick, tick, tick, boom!). MY DAY STARTS at 4.30am. I don’t need an alarm. I have a head full of stuff that I have to mentally download so I start firing off emails. I feel a twinge of guilt for anyone who has a loud notification ‘ping’ on their iPad or smartphone but ah well ... get up! I live on the GC so I’m on the road to the office in Brissie by 6am. The drive is a pain but I make the most of the time to plot my day and I call my sis in NZ for a crack up. I sometimes drag myself along to boot camp, but generally I like to be in the office before everyone else. I listen to old skool RnB and pump up the volume. No one knows I have a disco at my desk every morning, because when the first person rolls in, the music is turned off and it’s game on. They may not be pumped, but I am! When my right hand (wo)man Sarah, arrives, we discuss the news that broke overnight. We are both convinced that if we weren’t in publishing, we’d be detectives. We thrash out every Who Did It scenario and the MO of the suspect. I’m a crime and forensics nut, watching cases with avid interest, devouring every news item. My dad is ex-military and taught us kids to see what others may not. To be aware of people, body language and to trust your instinct. I once helped catch a guy who had a history of sexual assault against women. It’s a crazy story, involving me chasing him in my car, but the detective who took my statement said I described the guy to a tee. It lead to an arrest.

I’M ONE OF THE LUCKY ONES THAT LOVE WHAT I DO. I LOVE THE ENERGY AND THE PEOPLE I WORK WITH. I’m inspired and

energised by the creativity in the place, the ideas and the results we get... My primary roles at Style are being Fashion Editor and heading our Custom Publishing team - a ridiculously talented (and equally good looking) bunch of journalists and designers. I liken us to a footy team. We all

16

have a position but everyone will rally and cover each other when the pressure is on.

So out of my comfort zone!

NO ONE HERE IS PRECIOUS, I CAN’T COP PRINCESSES.

First up, the girls do the usual morning coffee run. They ask me everyday if I want one, which is quite funny, ‘cause they know I’m not a coffee person. We are kicking goals and I think that’s because we strive to deliver over and above the clients’ expectations. We’re very hands on. We enjoy the diversity of work and the process of workshopping a project or campaign. I’m not a journo but it’s the editorial content that really gets my juices flowing. I love paginating a magazine, planning the story lines and content for each page. I’m not into wishy washy stuff.

Wrapping up the August cover shoot with the team behind the scenes!

The content must be meaningful and relevant to the target audience. I tell the journos to write it so the reader gets it and more importantly, acts. Our clients expect ROI so we have to nail the editorial and call-to-action every time. I work closely with our designers Jade and Junita as I get excited in the creative of each product. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing a magazine come to life and the designers know when I’m happy with a layout ’cause I literally dance and holler like a mad woman. If it’s a fashion mag, I will often sit with them selecting specific fashion pieces for each page from a library of sometimes over 4,000 images. I couldn’t tell you what I had for lunch yesterday, but I can tell you which product comes from what brand or store. It’s weird, I have total recall of images yet my memory is shot in other ways.

IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING THAT I LOVE FASHION AND MY BUSINESS ALLOWS ME TO BE IMMERSED IN IT EVERY DAY. If I’m not at my Mac scouring fashion websites and blogs, I’m in a shopping centre or at a shoot. While it would be nice to be able to afford to wear Balmain every day, I’m all about mixing high-end with high‑street and making affordable fashion look good. After all, it’s not about what you wear, it’s how you wear it. Confidence is your best accessory. My drive home to the GC is time to catch up on phone calls and unwind. It gets me in a good mood before walking in the door to see my partner (READ: not be a cranky b#%@h). There is the glamorous side to my role with invites to events and launches, but I’m just as happy watching Family Feud most nights. (In my opinion, Grant Denyer is one of the naturally funniest people on TV). As early as my day starts, my weeknights are quiet and I’m usually on the nod by 8.30pm. How’s that for glam, hey?

5 MINUTES WITH CARA Style chats with Cara Delevingne about her new movie, Paper Towns. What is Paper Towns about? It’s about two characters, Quentin and Margo who grow up together, and through school they grow apart. One night Margo seeks Quentin’s assistance in helping her plot revenge against her boyfriend. Margo disappears and Quentin spends the movie trying to find her. What attracted you to the project? I had seen The Fault In Our Stars and read the book and I fell in love with both. Then I read the script for Paper Towns and it was so well-written that the characters really came to life for me. How was it working with Author, John Green? John is so funny and makes me laugh so much. I didn’t know what to expect from

him, but he blew my expectations out of the water. He got me very quickly. He said, “I know what you’re doing.” And I said, “How did you? No one knows that. That’s really weird John.” Do you identify with Margo? I’ve never felt so close to a character. She’s strongwilled and constantly lives through experience, finding out who she is by just living and doing. Even some of the adventures she had been on when she was younger, I felt I had been on too, which surprised me, as we grew up in different places. Also, Nat (Wolff) was the perfect Quentin and even in our first read our chemistry was great - we improvised the last scene we both started crying, it was really special.

I’VE NEVER FELT SO CLOSE TO A CHARACTER. SHE’S STRONG-WILLED AND CONSTANTLY LIVES THROUGH EXPERIENCE.

The Tea Master instructs how to pour the blend of fermented and roasted green tea.

FROM ‘A’ TO ZEN Hannah Doody explores the eclectic tastes and cultures outside of the city... IF YOUR EXPERIENCE of Logan doesn’t extend past the occasional visit to IKEA – you’re doing it wrong. Just 15 minutes on the highway south of Brisbane, you’ll find this cultural melting pot – a city consisting of 64 diverse suburbs and we were lucky enough to experience a taste of what it has to offer. Our first stop was to sample traditional Maori cuisine at Grandma’s Kiwi Kitchen & Gallery, which Colleen Walker and her family started as a food truck at the Global Food Village before moving to their shop front in Springwood. We sit amongst the traditional artwork which decorates the walls,

tasting the light and creamy Paua (Abalone), whitebait fritters, lolly cake and a modern take on a traditional dish – a hangi stack. After a stroll through Underwood Park, we visited the breathtaking Chung Tian Temple, where we took part in a Tea Ceremony. Our Tea Master explains tea making is an ancient form of meditation – the first two brews are in silence, to enable stimulation through all the senses. Our tour guide, Ling Ling Soh leads us through the peaceful gardens, elaborate meditation hall and Chung Tian Art Gallery. She tells us of Buddhist teachings of

mindfulness, and the importance to slow down and appreciate the present moment and we’re all left feeling relaxed and positive. To round off the day, we indulge in a smorgasbord of tasty bites at Christopher’s Fine Foods. We struggled to choose from the extensive menu, which showcases everything from Tapas, to sandwiches, pizzas and salads. I’m left with a resounding feeling that I’ve only just scratched the surface of all this diverse city has to offer – and will surely be back for more! WWW.VISITLOGAN.COM.AU

STRICTLY TALENTED

WIN ONE OF THREE DOUBLE PASSES TO SEE STRICTLY BALLROOM THE MUSICAL, 7:30PM ON THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 17, 2015 AT THE LYRIC THEATRE, QPAC. ENTER AT STYLEMAGAZINES. COM.AU

Jane Schon chats to rising star, Phoebe Panaretos AKA Fran in Strictly Ballroom The Musical – the new adaptation of the 90s film hits QPAC next month. How did you prepare for the role? We had an extensive audition process of about eight months. I really fought for the part. By the time I was cast in the role, I was ready to be the lead. I felt slightly less nervous than I would have been if the audition process was quick, but because it was so long I got to know Baz [Luhrmann] really well. Would you say Baz is your most influential mentor? Definitely. My teacher also... There have been a lot of people along the way helping me in my training. Baz has definitely influenced me to be hungry and opened my eyes to so many things in the industry that I want to embark on. This has been my huge break. Strictly Ballroom for me has been a complete dream come true, in a time in my career when I really wasn’t expecting it. How would you convince a non-theatre friend to come see the show? You never know if you’re a musical fan, and Strictly Ballroom has Baz Luhrmann’s touch to it; even the costumes are a spectacle. It is a feast to the eyes. It is a beautiful story that people can relate to. stylemagazines.com.au

Do you have any pre-show rituals? In Sydney I would get dressed up in character and go out to every single person in the show (which is about 40) and say, “Have a good show!” It ended up taking way to long. I adopted a different ritual in Melbourne. I have a little port-a-hole so I can see the audience. I poke my head out, no one can see me, and have a look at the crowd getting ready for the show - it gets me excited. Any tips for those looking to be a performer? Training is really important. And try to be as fearless as possible. It wasn’t until I was confident in myself that I did my best work. That is kind of the motto of the show, ‘A life lived in fear is a life half lived’. Don’t miss Strictly Ballroom The Musical, directed by Baz Luhrmann, playing from September 9, 2015 at QPAC - an inspiring tale of a championship ballroom dancer who breaks all the rules to follow his heart. When and why did you start up your blog, Wildblend? I got started in 2014 when I decided that I wanted to learn more about nutrition, functional fitness and an overall healthy lifestyle. I used my blog Wildblend as a way to share my passion for real food and ‘healthified’ recipes. I didn’t have any expectations because I envisioned it as a fun project to connect with other people, especially women, over my love for Paleo, CrossFit, raw vegan desserts and the latest health craze. What is your favourite topic to blog about? I’m a health nut and bio-hacker. I get excited about stuff that helps your biology to perform at its best. So I love learning and writing about food hacks that curb sugar cravings, foods that improve your hormones or what to eat to avoid depression. The recipes I create look pretty on the outside but what I’m really passionate about is the medicinal power of food. What’s the biggest misconception about you? I think people sometimes forget that bloggers are human. I don’t eat super clean 24/7; I cheat, I struggle, I fall off the real food wagon too. Beautiful curated photos create this bubble vision of someone’s life

Zoé Raissakis when really all I’m doing is trying to tell a story. Behind the scenes I’m a normal girl with random cravings and bloating issues like everyone else. What’s next for you? I have quite a few things planned for the next couple of months. I am currently working on an eBook, which I want to release by November this year. I’m also planning a Wildblend event series, which I will kick off while I’m in Europe for the summer. And I’ve just been offered my first cooking classes in Europe where I will focus on Paleo nibbles and raw vegan treats. It’s going to be a lot of fun!

LOVE A LITTLE LILAC

THE LOWDOWN ON LASERS

OFF-BEAT HOLIDAYS

ROMANTIC AND ETHEREAL, smoky hues of mauve and lilac are bringing a soft yet memorable impact to weddings this season. Paired with a simple palette of crisp white, sleek black or mixed with flashes of silver, this tone works beautifully as a powerful accent against a monochrome base. With this look, introduce the colour in ways that are prominent, yet elegantly refined, such as in satin table runners with fresh white florals and even in delicately draped bridesmaid dresses. The colour also translates well to more rustic or eclectic style events. Whether set inside a heritage hall or outdoors, timber bentwood chairs, clusters of lanterns and recycled timber coffee tables all look great with displays of flowers in every shade of this romantic hue. And for a thoroughly modern take, don’t be afraid to introduce elements that are trending right now – bronze geometrics, copper accents and hints of gold all bring serious wow factor. Just ensure the rest of your palette is paired right back to allow these bold accents to shine.

LASERS HAVE MULTIPLE uses, such as the reduction of redness, pigmentation, premature ageing and collagen induction. Unfortunately, people are misled about what lasers can achieve, and are unaware of other impacting factors. Laser technology ensures the right target in the skin is addressed, decreasing the risk of negative side effects. Skin health vastly affects the benefits of laser treatments, so the healthier your skin, the more receptive it is and the more likely it is to recover quickly. Your practitioner should be able to clearly assess your skin’s health and function, rather than addressing one problematic area. They should also have a thorough understanding of skin health, use of laser machines, education and aftercare to manage and help achieve your skin goals. When looking for a laser practitioner, always ask about the procedure you’re having and the risks involved. It’s important to know what to expect during and after the procedure.

MUST-HAVE KITCHEN GADGETS

RINGS FOR YOUR LIFESTYLE

SPRING INTO THE OUTDOORS

EVERY JOB IS made easier with the help of the correct tools. Beyond the usual pots, pans and cutting boards, it can be difficult to tell which tools offer intrinsic value. Here are four I know are worth their weight in proverbial gold: Savannah Julienne Peeler: The supersharp curved blade cuts thin, even strips of fruit and vegetables in seconds. Use it on carrots, cucumber, zucchini, beetroot, apple and pear. Microplane Grater: These shave rather than grate and the result is food that retains more of its texture and flavour. They also come in a variety of styles to suit everything from ginger to parmesan cheese. Metaltex Rotomac Multi Chopper: This chopper is ideal for regular use when a cumbersome food processor is an overkill. It will make a lovely salsa, puree berries and fruit, chop onion in a flash and is great for making pesto. F.Dick Red Spirit Santoku Knife: Ideal for different tasks including cutting vegetables, meat and herbs. A great all-rounder.

CHOOSING AN ENGAGEMENT ring requires some planning and research, especially if you live an active lifestyle. Here are three things to consider if you’re an active person: Suitable gemstones: The hardness of a gemstone is based on what is called the “Moh” scale which ranges from 1 (soft) to 10 (hard). Diamonds = 10, Sapphires = 9 and Emeralds = 7. Therefore, diamonds are perfect for an engagement ring. Remember to take care of your engagement ring and place it somewhere safe if there is a chance of it being knocked. Appropriate setting: Think about the height of your ring setting to make sure it suits your lifestyle. If it is raised too high, this can expose it to surface damage and other impacts, and can result in claws being hooked or damaged. Six claw settings and rub over settings are a safer setting option as this will offer more protection. The cut: Choose a diamond cut without sharp corners prone to chipping or snagging such as Marquise, Pear or Princess cut diamonds. Instead, Round Brilliant or Oval cuts may be better suited.

AS THE WEATHER heats up, entertaining heads outdoors. An outdoor kitchen means more than a barbecue and esky, and many have evolved into an extension of the home’s living space. Firstly, think about what you’ll be using it for. Once you figure this out, you can choose your must-haves for each zone and which portion of your outdoor kitchen should be the focus. Take the elements and access to amenities into consideration before choosing the perfect place. Safety should be the first priority when it comes to lighting in an outdoor kitchen brighten areas where cooking and other major activity will happen. In terms of appliances, what you choose for your outdoor kitchen is going to be very important. Quality is more important than quantity, and everything must be made for outdoor use. When selecting what materials to use in the outdoor kitchen, everything should be durable, weatherproof, heat resistant, and easy to clean. Think rot resistant wood, stone, and stainless steel.

HELLO AMERICAN BBQ

COSMETIC VEINS

AVOID HIGH BODY CORP FEES

AUSTRALIA HAS WELL and truly awakened to the taste of American BBQ. It conjures up images of tasty pulled pork, slow cooked sticky ribs, blues music and lazy days. Over the past 12 months BBQ festivals have become very popular in Australia. Many restaurants specific to this cooking style are appearing in Brisbane and those who are doing it well are proving very successful. There are plenty of BBQs and smokers to choose from to bring the flavours of American BBQ to your backyard or even take on the best in the emerging competition scene. At Aussie BBQs we carry a variety of devices to meet the needs of a backyard pit master. Common choices for home use are offset smokers, pellet grills, water smokers and charcoal BBQs. We also carry a range of sauces, rubs, smoking attachments and accessories. If you are interested in low and slow BBQ then come down and have a chat about what cooker will suit your needs.

WHAT YOU NEED to know: Unsightly spider veins usually result from impaired blood flow in veins lying below the skin which are failing to clear blood out properly. What you need to do: 1. Careful examination of subsurface veins with Doppler ultrasound to detect this problem is essential. Failure to treat this correctly can lead to disappointing results and increase risk of “matting” - a complication which aggravates the appearance of the veins. 2. Be sure to notify your treating doctor of any medications that you might happen to take, including supplemental therapies. Certain supplements such as Fishoil can sometimes interfere with the treatment and provoke matting. 3. Compression stockings – no one likes to wear them but they do mean better results! 4. Also remember that cosmetic treatment of spider veins is never completely permanent, over time new veins might develop and you may need a maintenance session in a few years to keep those legs looking great.

IF YOU OWN an apartment, then unfortunately you can’t avoid paying body corporate fees, though, it’s possible to avoid paying high ones. A recent study on body corp fees in Brisbane found the average amount paid was $4,693 per annum, or close to $100 per week. But a smart purchaser can identify apartments that are likely to attract lower fees, saving you at least $1,000 per annum or $20 or more a week. Things to look for are: • Boutique developments with a smaller number of apartments. • No wasted or unusable common spaces. • Low maintenance gardens. • No onsite management. • A new building, so less maintenance requirements. • Robust construction materials that reduce ongoing maintenance. • No pools or gyms, which are rarely used by tenants and don’t increase your rental income. By being an astute purchaser, you stand a far greater chance of achieving high returns.

A GROOM’S TO-DO LIST

ENGLAND HAD THEIR CHANCE

IMPROVING INTERNAL COMMS

THOUGH THE GROOM’S style takes a backseat to the brides, it doesn’t mean your formal wear won’t require thought - so we’ve created a checklist to help out. Three Months Out Get fitted for your suit and get your friends in too - give a due date earlier than you really need. One Month Double-check alterations to correct mistakes or make up for changes from the initial fitting. A Week Before Start cleaning up facial hair and get a haircut. Check your suit to see if it needs a final press. The Day Before Make sure you have all you need, especially the rings!! The Big Day Do your final grooming and don’t forget deodorant - we tend to sweat during big moments. Check those rings again and give them to your best man. This will be the biggest moment in your life; take it in and enjoy your day.

ENGLAND ARE THE worst front runners I have seen in cricket. They have blown their early advantage over Australia in a day and they are blaming everyone involved from admin to groundsman to players. How about just get it right before you can be blamed? Having travelled over here for the Ashes Test series, I sense they’re more comfortable dissecting the poor performance at Lord’s than promoting what was good about their team’s great performance in Cardiff’s first test. Australia’s rehab was swift – led by each and every player. They make no excuses, put in more hard work, play with pain and get it right for each other. Trust that it will be good enough and give the Poms what they were expecting – backlash. Like a steel pipe band, they saw it coming and could do nothing about it – just crumble. A competitive performance in the third test by England will save this series. Australia is desperate to find out which English top order batsman will be next to go – Lyth, Bell or Bairstow. It’s now fun again for them, knowing they have the opposition’s measure in all facets. England have only themselves to blame with three games to go.

WHETHER IT’S IN the workplace or within the family, internal communication is key to success. Instead of focusing on achieving goals, an internal disconnect will see energy amongst staff channelled instead to criticising each other. Elite Point 3 works with companies to focus on their internal communication, highlight weaknesses, and create and implement strategies to overcome them. For example, missed deadlines are often due to one area or department waiting on another - this can be avoided with improved communication and eliminating blame. Employees spend a number of hours every week “chasing” after information and documents, or making excuses for why they haven’t got what their colleague is waiting for. Our research shows if employees proactively offer information, reports, and project updates, they would drastically reduce wasted time. It would also reduce the level of frustration and anxiety employees experience when being chased for something. A win-win all round!

HOW TO: EMAIL MARKETING

MAXIMISING YOUR PRICE

UNLOCK YOUR CREATIVITY

STARTING AN EMAIL marketing program for your small business might seem daunting - but it needn’t be. With so many great tools and plenty of free advice available, your first email marketing campaign could be up-and-running in hours. The first thing to think about is who you’re going to email, keeping in mind everyone on your mailing list must have given either explicit consent (they’ve subscribed), or inferred consent (they’re a current customer). It’s also important to consider how you can utilise your existing channels to capture new subscribers. Quick wins include a pop-up on your website, an iPad on your shop counter, or a mailing list sign-up link in your email signature. Next, choose an email marketing platform (Sign-Up.to or MailChimp are great for beginners). These systems have a selection of free responsive templates to get you started. Lastly, start simple with a friendly introductory email to say who you are, why you’re emailing and what the reader can expect in the future. Style is excited to be collaborating with Andzen for our A-list e-newsletter!

WITH RESIDENTIAL REAL estate accounting for over half of all household wealth in Australia, the value of your property is more critical than ever. In the case of your principal place of residence every extra dollar you achieve from the sale could count for two in your pocket. While the market, location and condition of your property account largely for the value achieved, the ultimate premium lies in finding the number one buyer. The best way to do this is to effectively expose your property to all buyers in the marketplace and create competition to draw out the party that will ultimately pay the top price. Consulting an agent who can provide an appropriate selling strategy and corresponding advertising and marketing plan is the best way to ensure you achieve top dollar. When selecting the agent that is right for you, the key things to look for are: • Local market knowledge • Trust and integrity • Strong sales performance record • Recommendations from previous clients

ARE YOU HITTING a brick wall on a great idea? Simple changes in how you think and act can unlock creative potential and develop solutions to old problems. Here are some techniques: • “Sleep on it” – the old adage of ‘sleep on it’ is very real and has been well researched. Your question is directed to your unconscious mind which starts working out the solution. • “Label yourself” – if you think it, you believe it – according to research. Researchers found those who considered themselves creative sought out more creative opportunities and therefore spent more time being creative. • “Colour me orange” – orange, red and yellow are the colours of creativity. Research shows warm colours promote divergent thinking – the necessary process for coming up with multiple ideas. Paint that wall or start wearing red! • “Quirky works” – we often think creative people need to work in tech environments with sleek designer tables and white chairs. Far from it – the more diverse, crazy and zany the work station, the better it is for creativity.

CELEBRATING CLASSICS A premier Queensland motorsport event is set to make a comeback in Brisbane this September at Mount Coot-tha and Channel Seven’s Great South East has all the details. IN SEPTEMBER, MORE than 100 of Australia’s classic racing cars and street vehicles will return to the mountain to race in the Cootha Classic, reinvigorating a race dating back to the early 1900s. Great South East host Sofie Formica discovers more about the motorsport festival returning to Mt Coot-tha after a couple of years on hiatus and admits to having a moment of nostalgia, as she had an MGB back in the day. If you’re trackside for the Cootha Classic this year, you’ll be treated to a mix of modern

supercars, purpose-built race cars and of course plenty of classics, racing through the winding public roads upon Brisbane’s iconic Mt Coot-tha. The Coot-tha Classic is scheduled for the first Saturday of September. Racing runs allday, with plenty of grandstands and viewing platforms available along the track atop Mt Coottha lookout. There’s also a full schedule of offtrack entertainment, including live music, trade exhibitors, interactive displays and celebrity drivers complementing the non-stop on-track action, as well as a boutique food and drink area where

you can sit down and enjoy a meal between races. A fitting start to the father’s day weekend, those with a love of cars or just those keen to indulge in a bit of nostalgia. Tune into Channel Seven’s Great South East motoring special to learn more about the event, and see Sofie also visit the memorabilia and private collections on view at the Queensland Motorsport Museum in Ipswich. THE FESTIVAL IS ALWAYS ONE OF THE BIGGEST HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR FOR THE AREA, AND 2015 PROMISES TO BE BIGGER THAN EVER WITH BRAND NEW STALLS OPENING UP ALONGSIDE SOME OF YOUR OLD FAVOURITES. NUNDAH VILLAGE STREET FESTIVAL SEPTEMBER 13, 9AM TO 3PM WWW.NUNDAH.COM

THE NORTHSIDE SUBURB of Nundah is continually changing and growing, making it a trendy hotspot among Brisbane locals. With a stack of great cafes and stylish shops to frequent, more and more people are choosing to spend their weekends in Nundah. Start your morning right with a visit to any of the amazing local cafes in the strip, before spending the day browsing stores and picking up a few great finds. There are plenty of restaurants open until late, too, so you can always get a good fill of fine food before heading home after a day in Nundah. Nundah is also home to a number of significant historical sites, including the heritage listed Nundah Cemetery and Cadogan House, formerly 36

the Nundah Private Hospital, and you’re welcome to take a tour of the suburb’s history as you meander around the area. Thinking of making Nundah your next destination for a good day out? Why not visit the Nundah Farmers Markets, open every Sunday morning from 6am for fresh produce, meats, and arts and crafts. You can also take your tastebuds on a trip around Nundah’s brand new neighbour, The Wine Warehouse, and their range of delicious deli foods and boutique wines. With the addition of the new CircaNundah precinct, from the brains behind James St in Fortitude Valley and The Barracks in Paddington, it’s easy to see why so many people are choosing to visit this up-and-coming area. A LOCAL TREASURE Amanda Stein from Panda Pearls tells us why the world may be her oyster, but Nundah is her home. What do you love about Nundah? It’s ever evolving. There has been a change of the guard and it’s now a destinational shopping and eating experience. Why did you choose Nundah to set up your business 10 years ago? The Village atmosphere reminds me of Newtown, Sydney meets St Kilda, Melbourne. With all the exciting changes to Nundah over the years it’s potential was obvious and the reason I invested here. What changes have you seen to the area? Nundah was actually the first free settlement in Brisbane and has changed dramatically! My beautiful shop was built in 1924 and was the original telephone exchange. The entire Village has moved into the 21st century with wonderful new retail shops and gourmet food outlets. Check out the new revamped Royal Hotel!

Tell us about Sidewalk Sunday? It’s a community charity event held in the carpark adjoining Panda Pearls. The next one is being held in conjunction with the annual Nundah Festival. We are supporting Women’s Legal Services who help Queensland women with domestic violence and family law issues. Until I had the privilege of meeting Rosie Batty at the last Sidewalk Sunday, I had no idea just how much an endemic problem this is. The charity event kicks off on Sunday 13 September from 8am. What is your favourite piece in store at the moment? The gorgeous pure silk opera swing coats and extensive shell collection. The jumbo Baroque pearls are magnificent too! “IN BRISBANE THERE’S NOT TOO MANY HARD AND FAST RULES OR EXPECTATIONS RELATING TO MEN’S ATTIRE!”

When did you become interested in fashion? I was quite partial to a hand knotted wrist band when I was six, I think my interest piqued at that point I’m not sure if my style IQ will ever reach those lofty heights again. How would you describe your sense of style? Eclectic until the washing basket fills up then it’s “clean”. Does your occupation influence your choice in work attire? We’re pretty lucky in Brisbane there’s not too many hard and fast rules or expectations relating to men’s attire unless you’re in court. I tend to stray from the dark blue suit white shirt, silk tie code and prefer mixing jackets, pants, brogues and textured or woollen ties. Fetishes? Watches, leather bags and shoes. What’s your go-to fashion favourite? Patterned chinos. What would we catch you in while lounging around the house? Rugby gear, reminiscing about the glory days. What’s your fashion mantra? Put clothes on, keep changing till it works (not ideal for an organised wardrobe). Who is your fashion muse? Tom Ford,

I can’t remember not being obsessed with his collections. Your best budget-buy? Ben’s special burger. Your most indulgent purchase? Above with an extra pattie. What’s your favourite new-season trend? Man bags, nature prints and moustache oil. Your number one Brisbane men’s store? Cloakroom, the bespoke experience. What do you think is the most important thing for women when it comes to fashion? I think it goes for either gender, choose your outfit and embrace what you’re wearing. If you’re feeling uncomfortable with an element of your outfit or the outfit itself it’s likely other people will pick up on that.

Short & Sweet..

Where can we find you… On a Saturday night? Blackbird Bar and Grill. On a Sunday morning? James Street being walked by my dog. On your next holiday? Queenstown, New Zealand, why don’t we have Ferg burgers?

HEARTBEAST THEATRE’S LATEST production, King Lear unveils a much darker undertone to the famous play through the company’s Australian gothic-style interpretation. “People think of gothic as black eyeliner, black hair… but Australian gothic is about the interrupted spirituality of the land,” says Director, Jacqueline Kerr. “Australia was spiritual for a long time before we [European settlers] came,” Setting the play in the mid1880s during this dark time in our country’s history – coupled with an already tragic storyline – has shaped the classic tale into something entirely new. Australian elements, like bush sounds, are manipulated in an ominous way to set the scene, assisted by eerie lighting and music and the extravagant costumes designed and made by Jacqueline. If you’re not familiar with the play, here’s a quick rundown... Lear, a wealthy and ageing land-owner, decides to divide up his large property between his three daughters. But, in order to get their share they must prove their love for him. Refusing to play the game, his youngest and favourite daughter, Cordelia is disowned

KEEP ON TRUCKIN’ LIDO GOT CHATS Style speaks to Monster Jam’s Debrah Miceli (aka Madusa) about the path that led her to Monster Trucks, and inheriting her grandma’s sense of adventure. What led you into a career driving Monster Trucks? We’re all born in different circumstances; good, bad or indifferent. We all have choices and those choices reflect our future. I was that poor kid on welfare with hand-me-down clothes. I was a loner. I tried the bad crowd, but I hated cigarettes, so I became an athlete. I excelled, but being on welfare halted my dreams. To overcome this, I became an entrepreneur — mowing lawns, shovelling driveways. I didn’t grow up wanting to become a Monster Jam driver. I was a Pro Wrestler at 18 for WWE and in 2001 I got a call from Monster Jam asking if I’d be interested in driving a truck. I said, “Well…I will check it out.” 14 years later, and two Monster Jam World Finals Championships and I’m currently their only women’s champion that does backflips in a truck! Where do you think your competitive nature comes from? Definitely my 92-year-old grandmother Violet. She still rides a Harley! From your pet business to becoming a FIT Life coach, you have your fingers in many pies it must keep you busy! Yes! I have to keep busy — the fear of going

back to that lifestyle [on welfare] scares me. I have recently become a Yoga instructor with degrees in Personal Training, Nutrition and soon to be Naturopathic Doctor. I’m also just finishing my biography and the goal is to have it made into a movie. What is something people would be surprised to know about you? I am an introvert. Really, I am! Do you think you will always be an adrenaline junkie? Absolutely! Remember my granny? YOU CAN CATCH MADUSA IN ACTION AT MONSTER JAM AT QSAC, OCTOBER 3. WWW.MONSTERJAMONLINE.COM.AU

ONCE KNOWN AS LidoLido, a European popstar who played stadiums and supported Beyoncé, Lido (as he’s now known) feels he connects with people most through his foray into electronic music under his new moniker. “The Lido project started as a hobby I did for fun… and I came to realise people love that, so I continued it. “The response to it (Lido’s debut EP) was overwhelming. I sort of entered the electronic scene without knowing anything and I think that’s the reason why people found it so interesting. I didn’t know the rules.” Lido also takes a different approach with his live sets, commenting that most electronic producers “are very much about pressing the right buttons at the right times and recreating the recording,” but he prefers to rely on improv and fooling around with the tracks. “I grew up a musician… so it’s important to include freedom in what I do live. I’m trying to bring back the musicianship in electronic music, because I feel it got a little lost along the way.” Lido says he’s excited for the tour, as he’s already friends with many of the artists, including Aussie DJ Alison Wonderland: “You’ll definitely see me jumping on stage with her, we couldn’t not do that if we tried. It’s going to be one big party.” WWW.LIDOGOTSONGS.COM WWW.SOUNDCLOUD.COM/LIDOGOTSONGS

A FAMILY TRADITION With Oktoberfest Brisbane just around the corner, Style finds out more about the families behind Australia’s largest German festival. REIMER MOELLER AND Boris Zoulek met through a chance encounter in 2008, and have now fused their shared German heritage and passion for cultural traditions to bring Oktoberfest to Brisbane. Their knowledge has helped them to build Australia’s largest and most authentic Oktoberfest, and has been voted by National Geographic Traveler as one of the top 10 Oktoberfest festivals outside Germany. Reimer and his Australian wife Louise spent 20 years living in various regions of Germany before migrating to Australia in 2004. They say the festival is about picking the best elements from popular folk festivals across Germany and combining them together into one iconic festival here in Brisbane. “It’s not just the food, or the beers and wines, or

FACES OF FITNESS We chat to Paora Taukamo of Fitness First Wynnum about why he loves life as a personal trainer.

BOXING WILL BOOST YOUR METABOLISM DURING THE CHILLY WINTER MONTHS!

What do you love about the fitness and health industry? The industry is always evolving with new faces, new exercise regimes or revised techniques. As a personal trainer it keeps you motivated to keep upskilling and sharing your knowledge with your clients. What is your training philosophy with your clients? Exercise doesn’t come naturally to everyone but if you are willing to put in the work, then the results will show. It’s about passion not athleticism. Regardless of your fitness level, physique or how confident you are, there is always an opportunity to better yourself. Best exercise tip for staying motivated in winter? Stop hugging the blanket and come

and see me for some boxing and functional training. It gets the heart rate going and the metabolism burning! What can clients expect when training with you? A fair trainer who is equally motivated to get you results and dedicated to preplanning training sessions that are worth making the time for. I’m a people person, so you’ll be guaranteed a bit of humour and banter along the way. Life mantra? One day your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching! THE LEATHER SKIRT:

FIVE WAYS

Fashion Editor Tracy Johnston shares how to take your leather skirt from desk to dance floor, and everywhere in between.

LOOK 1 THE CLASSIC COLLARED SHIRT GETS A SIMPLE UPDATE IN THIS BEAUTIFUL CORNFLOWER BLUE FROM EQUIPMENT. I’M ABSOLUTELY DROOLING OVER THIS GIVENCHY BAG FROM MARYON’S (AND SO ARE ALL THE GALS IN THE STYLE OFFICE). FOR A DESK TO DINNER LOOK, I’VE PAIRED THE SKIRT WITH SOME OLD FAVOURITES – BUT IF I WERE RUNNING AROUND ON A PHOTO SHOOT, MY FAITHFUL WHITE CONVERSE OR ADIDAS WOULD DO THE TRICK. Equipment shirt, Calexico; Givenchy Pandora bag, Maryon’s.

THE LEATHER PENCIL skirt is the ultimate staple piece this season, with the versatility to be styled for the office, drinks with the girls, on location at a shoot, or at a client meeting. The Carla Zampatti leatherette ‘Pencil Me In’ skirt is my pick of the season and I have been absolutely thrashing it! I could have easily come up with 50 looks, but here are three quick ones (with two more online) – featuring new season pieces from some of our fashion forward friends on James Street.

LOOK 2 I LOVE A BOMBER AND THE BRIGHT COLOUR AND LINEN TEXTURE OF THIS MSGM BEAUTY MAKES FOR THE PERFECT CONTRAST WITH THE SKIRT’S SMOOTH LEATHER. I DON’T MIND A BIT OF PATTERN CLASHING, SO I’VE TEAMED IT WITH THIS SNAKE PRINT CLUTCH FOR A SUBTLE STATEMENT. THESE PATENT SOPHIA WEBSTER HEELS WILL TAKE ME SEAMLESSLY FROM WORK TO DRINKS WITH CLIENTS OR THE GIRLS – THE HEEL IS KILLER. MSGM Bomber jacket, Samantha Ogilvie; Helmut Lang knit, Calexico; Givenchy Antigona clutch, Sophia Webster Killer heel, Maryon’s.

LOOK 3 A TAKE ON A WINTER CLASSIC, THIS LOOK LAYERS A SIMPLE WHITE SHIRT WITH A LUXE CABLE KNIT. I’M LOVING THIS NEUTRAL TONE PAIRED WITH THE DRAMATIC LEATHER SKIRT. FOR WARMER DAYS, I’D OPT FOR A ROLL NECK SLEEVELESS KNIT IN A SIMILAR GREY OR BLUE TONE. THE WHOLE OUTFIT IS FINISHED OFF PERFECTLY WITH THESE GORGEOUS SKATER SHOES BY TODS; SO VERSATILE AND FUN! Acne Studios shirt, Calexico; Derek Lam 10 Crosby knit, Samantha Ogilvie; Tods raffia spots skater shoe, Maryon’s.

THE NEXT WAVE Brisbane emerging fashion designers are challenging the MBFF runway this August. Christie Sutherland chatted to Rumay Oosthuizen, the creative fingertips behind Roux May, to see how her sketchpad has evolved and where her threads will take her.

“I always start by first putting on my leopard print platforms.” RUMAY OOSTIHUIZEN

Describe yourself in a few words? I personally live in paradoxes and extremes. It is both very exhilarating and very exhausting. And your brand? Visually opinionated. Emotive. Comfortably sophisticated. What has been the most challenging aspect of your journey? Finding my signature as a young designer and learning to confidently trust it when making choices and creating design concepts. What influenced the move to start the label in Brisbane not in South Africa? Brisbane is home of my bones. I also love the soft tremors of a young city waking up to creativity and endless possibilities. I thrive when I’m right in the heart of the excitement. Has the culture of the two

countries influenced you differently? Absolutely. Living in South Africa demands a certain boldness and courage, whilst Australia embodies freedom. Merging these concepts makes for interesting creative ideas. Describe your ideal customer? She is confident, fashion is how she communicates and expresses herself. What are your hopes for the future of fashion? I see designers growing a conscience, models eating, technology winning and independent labels thriving. What is on your mind at the moment? Fashion Festival (98.5%). Noosa Chocolate Factory Rocky Road. Coffee. Sleep. What is your one piece of fashion advice? Spend some time with yourself, knowing yourself makes fashion easy. IN LIVING WATERCOLOUR Lucy Stephens chats to fashion illustrator and Style + Substance panellist Kerrie Hess, about pursuing her passion and finding her balance back in Brisbane.

AS A CHILD, Kerrie Hess always loved to draw. “I still remember asking Mum if I could go to art classes when I was five,” she says. “In school, I was that person drawing in their spare time.” Growing up on Brisbane’s south side, Kerrie attended Lourdes Hill College before studying graphic design at Griffith University. “I thought well, at least graphic design is a real job – I’ll probably end up doing that,” she laughs. And she did – moving to London and working at The Independent before her career took a rather serendipitous turn. “It was the week we had to go to press and we lost an image for a fashion story. It was all very stressful, and so I ended up doing an illustration to replace it. There was some great feedback, and I decided I would make a go of illustration as a career,” she says. And so, Kerrie’s journey from graphic designer to internationally-acclaimed fashion illustrator 62

began, with Kerrie commissioned to create stunning watercolour paintings for the likes of Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Vogue. “It was an awesome feeling,” she says, “I was this Australian artist – from Brisbane – painting these incredible campaigns.” But, Kerrie says, the road to success wasn’t without its challenges. “It was over 16 years ago,” she says. “There weren’t a lot of fashion illustrators back then; there was no handbook, no one really to talk to. It wasn’t easy in the beginning – I was illustrating horoscopes, I was just illustrating whatever job came my way to pay my dues.” And it was a very different world back then. “It was the time of hand-couriering your work to the client,” she says. “I remember my first job with Vogue Australia. They said to me, “You know, people are starting to use email, so maybe we could work together and

STYLE SUBSTANCE learn more online

you could email your work to us? And I went, ‘oh, ok – that sounds easier,” she laughs. Now back in Brisbane, she says she has the “best of both worlds”, dividing her time between painting, locking in new campaigns (her most recent, a shoe collection with Ballettonet), and school drop-offs for her five year-old son. She’s excited for the future, and says welcoming all opportunities in those early stages has been key to her success. “I can’t remember who it was, but I was told that when amazing opportunities come up and you think, ‘my goodness, I’m not sure I can do this’ you just have to say yes; just jump, and build your parachute on the way down”. LOVE

A DAY AT THE MARRIOTT A real life couple tell us about their perfect wedding day at the Marriott. We loved the venue because… We could enjoy the fireworks at midnight from the Pool deck. The floor to ceiling windows that lined the Grand Ballroom had amazing views. We loved that we could have the room set up to suit our needs, including a large dance floor. The food was… Discreetly delivered and prompt. Our guests all received their meals at the times specified, they were all beautifully presented and more importantly absolutely delicious. The best thing - no one had an empty glass for long! Our day was made special because… Aly and her team were incredible, the attention to detail and care we received leading up-to and on

our wedding day was one of the best gifts anyone could have given us. We were able to sit back, be stress free and enjoy every second. Best photo locations? We decided to take a more relaxed approach with our photographer as we just wanted ‘candid’ shots with nothing too posed. The shots from around the cathedral and walking from there to the Marriott were perfect. Our guests loved… The relaxed fun vibe, the culture and the dance floor. My husband is Samoan so it was special for my friends and family to see him and his family in their element. I will always remember… How happy I felt, I was so relaxed and loved having our nearest and

dearest all in the one room to witness our love. I want to do it all again this NYE (and we wouldn’t change a thing.) The accommodation at the venue was great because… Everything on our wedding day was within a 500m radius. Our guest package was excellent, the suite was spacious for us girls to get ready with our make-up and hair and people didn’t have to drive anywhere. FIRST OF ITS KIND

WHAT TO WEAR

Christie Sutherland tells us why this unique dining experience is one not to be missed. GAUGE PRESENTS A seemingly simple menu that unmistakably delivers a taste experience that goes above and beyond. Created by Jerome Batten, the man behind Teneriffe’s Sourced Grocer and delivered by a talented team including Head Chef Ollie Hansford, Gauge shows off the best of boutique dining. In a league of its own the experimental menu is of a fine dining standard despite it being under the title of café. Tucked away, the small space is constantly buzzing with locals and tourists. Initially it is the warming smell of coffee that draws you in, and the stylish modern setting. But it will be your first bite into whichever innovative, authentic dish you choose that will keep you coming back. The entrée that captured my tastebuds was the black garlic bread, with a side of brown butter finished with a dusting of burnt vanilla. Following this, it has an impossible choice of mains

between a selection of seafood dishes, poultry or vegetarian. The seasoned kingfish is spectacular and the baked eggplant with black tahini honey, roasted almonds, flamed grapes and smoked yoghurt is unlike anything else. And, if food choices weren’t hard enough, the newly opened boutique laneway bar, Maker, has the same focus on fresh produce and providing a unique sensory experience as its sibling Gauge. Each cocktail is a clever concoction with an array of flavours like beeswax, macadamia, and frangipani. This bar is the perfect lead on from a long lunch at Gauge. There is still more to come with a bar menu whispered to be on its way. All we know for sure is that when it comes to Gauge and Maker – we can’t get enough. A LOYAL LOCAL Wilston’s Cafe Conti is under new management, and they’re proving they are still a favourite among locals. CAFE CONTI HAS been a Wilston dining hotspot for over 10 years now, and new owner, Limin Zhang wants people to know that they’re still the same café, serving the same high quality food we know and love. From families to business people, northside locals have always favoured Cafe Conti as a great place to meet. The staff are proud to maintain the friendly service that makes the cafe so popular. With the same loyal chefs serving delicious meals such as Head Chef Alex and manager Dan who makes a mean coffee, Cafe Conti is all about serving delicious modern cuisine at reasonable prices. The most popular breakfast dishes are the Conti

Conti’s Croquembouche

breakfast and the pulled pork served on ciabatta, though the Maple-Braised Pork Fillet is always in high-demand come dinner time. The fully-licensed restaurant also has a tapas menu available on Friday and Saturday afternoons and evenings. New owner of Cafe Conti, Limin hopes that

Brisbanites will always think of his cafe with fond memories and continue to visit for years to come, and in doing so, keeping the history of the restaurant alive. CAFE CONTI 1/102 KEDRON BROOK RD, WILSTON P 3856 5588 WWW.CAFECONTI.COM.AU

DOWN TO THE NITTY GRITTY Brooklyn Beauty Bar’s Brooke Jesberg gives us the low-down on an essential part of your beauty regime. EXFOLIATION AND PEELS are so important because as we get older (and I’m afraid I’m talking 25 years and up here peeps), our skin renewal rate slows and that means dull, sluggish and thickened skin…yuck. So, for smooth, fresh, lovely skin you need to know three things: 1. Exfoliate your skin twice a week (with a peeling cream containing a non-scratching granule). This allows your moisturiser to penetrate deeper so your skin looks fresh. My personal favourite is Dr Spiller Jojoba peeling cream (rrp $69). It hydrates as it exfoliates and also defuses redness – love it! 2. Once a month or so treat yourself to a professional in-salon all natural herbal pick-me-up peel. It’s quick and you will see immediate results.

FOR SKIN AS SOFT, SMOOTH AND CLEAR AS A BABY’S BOTTOM, EXFOLIATE TWICE A WEEK WITH A NONSCRATCHING PEELING CREAM AND INDUGLE IN REGULAR HERBAL PEELS.

Brooke Jesberg

3. For mature or problem skin or to get ready for a big event, a professional Herbal Aktiv Peel is like an exfoliant on steroids. No drugs or chemicals here, although the results are medically proven. Herbal Aktiv Peels work on the skin’s own natural renewal process of regeneration. One of its main ingredients is Spirulina, which contains around 250 vitamins, minerals and trace elements with no laboratory able to match the biological process of this single plant. The results of these professional peels are amaze-balls!

Warning: Many exfoliants contain broken almond shells and even crushed pebbles — they will scratch your skin and damage live healthy skin cells. Bad, bad, bad. SKIN CONFIDENCE Style finds out how Irena Morgenstern has become a leader in her field, as she celebrates 30 years in the cosmetics industry.

After 20 years in the industry, personal and professional integrity will continue to play a large part of our business.

YOUR LIFE PARTNER

How did you get involved with skin management? Coming from a Mechanical Engineering background, I have always appreciated the need for cutting edge technologies, and when establishing Irena Morgenstern Skin Management in 1995, I was determined to ensure my clients would benefit from only the best advancements available. When I moved to Australia, paramedical aesthetics was in its infancy and I had a vision to revolutionise the industry by offering a noninvasive approach to skin and age management that maximises results with no long-term side effects and minimum, or no downtime. Why laser and light-based therapies? They are incredible tools which effectively rejuvenate your appearance and offer long-lasting results. To what do you owe your success? My experience, ongoing research, continued education and the latest technologies. Combined, they allow me to identify and provide the best possible treatments for my clients.

Is there a client story that stands out? I treated a teenage girl affected by post acne scarring, which caused her to suffer depression. After a course of laser treatments her skin improved so dramatically that she became happy and vibrant again. Stories like these give me the impetus to continue to explore techniques that make a real difference. What are your hopes for the future of the industry? Celebrating 20 years is certainly a milestone, particularly in an industry that is forever changing. Personal and professional integrity has always and will continue to play a large part in our business, along with customer satisfaction and providing our new and loyal clients advanced solutions and personalised therapies to address their skin concerns. Pilates should not be a ‘one size fits all’ exercise regime, The Body Refinery offers a range of classes.

Finding the perfect exercise regime can be tough, but Pilates could be just what you’ve been searching for. SUSAN COTTRELL OF The Body Refinery informs us on just how adaptable and important Pilates can be to overall health and wellbeing through the different stages of life. How can pilates keep us fit and fabulous for life? No matter how old or how ‘fit’ you are, Pilates classes can help create better body awareness and balance, strengthen and tone core muscles, and improve cardiovascular fitness. How does Pilates help when you are injured? Known for its all-round conditioning and rehabilitation of injuries, postural problems and pain relief, the Gyrotonic Method can help support, strengthen and heal any injuries you have. Can you still do Pilates when pregnant? 78

Pilates is a great low-impact exercise option to work your deep abdominal muscles and prep those pelvic floor muscles. Exercising through pregnancy also makes it easy for you to get back to your pre-baby bod. How about when we’re older? A Pilates class performed with postural equipment that is slow and supportive can be particularly beneficial for the elderly or less mobile. It can help with the rehabilitation of chronic and complex injuries, such as neck and back pain and postural based conditions. Sounds like the perfect fit? The Body Refinery offers a range of classes designed with these specific purposes in mind, as Pilates should not be a ‘one size fits all’ exercise regime.

It’s as if we are in an orchestra and you are my conductor, and I’m the lead violinist.

DMITRI’S DYNASTY Journo Hannah Doody gets the Papas treatment. WITH HAIRDRESSING IN his genes, it’s no wonder Dmitri Papas has become an influential figure in the industry. Co-owner of Papas + Pace, and son of legendary Brisbane hairdressers Stelios and Sophie Papas, Dmitri was recently awarded Australian Hairdresser of the Year at the 2015 Hair Expo Awards. Humbled and honoured by the award, he says his parents have been instrumental in his success, along with years of hard work and dedication. The salon has a warm vibe and all the staff are friendly, with incredible attention to

detail. Dmitri’s style is polished, technical and precise, and after a few minutes in the chair, it’s obvious to see how he earned his title. “I always felt perfecting my technical skills was of the utmost importance, so I was always watching, learning and practicing,” he says. “I don’t skimp on anything, or cut corners.” Dmitri’s passion for technical skill has inspired him to tour Australia and overseas educating other hairdressers as a Global Artist for Redken, and he has also been working with charity group R U OK. He constantly examines the world around him for inspiration, regularly visiting art galleries, fashion

houses, music, film and theatre with his team. Despite his standing, Dmitri is charming, fun and down-to-earth, and has a way of making his clients feel at ease. He talks through all the options thoroughly, and says his primary concern is not trends but with creating a style to suit each individual. “It’s as if we are in an orchestra and you are my conductor, and I’m the lead violinist”, he says. “We work together throughout the process.” It doesn’t stop here for Dmitri, he and business partner Justin Pace have plans to open a barber shop in West End in September.

THE NEW BROW: FAT VS FULL

BEAUTY, EVERY DAY

LET’S TALK DOWN THERE

THICK, LUSCIOUS EYEBROWS are big right now, but where is the line between fat, and naturally full, shaped eyebrows? Fat brow don’ts: • Try not to let your brows grow back to their former schoolgirl glory. • Don’t grow the extra long, wire like hairs and use them to fake a fat brow. They’re the ones that age the face. • Avoid growing the ends of the brow too long as it drags the eye down. • Don’t let the hairs grow too close to the eyelid. Full brow dos: • Have your natural brow professionally shaped. • Let your brows grow for up to one month before trying a new brow look. Try a trusted brow and lash growth tonic. • Consider lightening your brows as it helps the brows look tidier. • Ask your specialist to de-bulk from within. • Shape and taper the ends of your brows to give your face an uplifting, fresh look. Arrange a Brow Lift-Shaping experience today.

EVER WONDERED WHAT the term ‘Skin Embroidery’ means in the beauty world? It’s a semi-permanent makeup used to enhance natural beauty. The changes are subtle, so won’t look fake or overdone, but will make a big difference to your overall daily beauty look. There are multiple ways it can be used to enhance your natural beauty: • Eyebrows: colour can be embroidered onto the eyebrows to fill in the gaps and change your eyebrow shape, making your eyebrows fuller, without losing their natural look. • Lashline: colour can be used to fill in the gaps of the lashes, so you look like you have full set of lashes making your eyes bright and even more beautiful. • Lips: correcting the colour of the lost pigment and enhancing the glow of pinkness. • Hairline: this technique can be used to mimic your hairline so it looks fuller and natural. Dont wait - start looking extraordinary today! Book an appointment at Complexion Code in Albion.

PROLAPSE IS A gynecological hernia which occurs when the walls of the vagina become lax, and the organs they should support start to bulge into the vagina and create the sensation of a lump hanging down. There are many types of prolapse, which differ according to which organ is affected. Common causes are childbirth, loss of hormones at menopause, and being overweight. It is less common in women who have not had babies, and most common in those who have had difficult vaginal deliveries. Symptoms of prolapse are varied in women but many experience dragging or heaviness in the area. Women’s health physiotherapists can treat prolapse conservatively and are worth visiting prior to considering surgical management. They will carry out an examination, provide helpful information and advice, and may provide a pessary so you can carry on as usual. The Body Refinery offers women’s health physiotherapy. If you have any concerns, book an appointment and receive the correct advice.

INVOLUNTARY LEAKAGE

WHY ZEN IN WINTER?

MY WELLNESS MANIFESTO

WOMEN, WHETHER PREGNANT or not, can experience incontinence at any time during their lives and most are too embarrassed to discuss. Incontinence is the involuntary leakage of the bladder and sometimes the bowel. There are many contributing factors, but childbirth is the strongest risk factor. Expert pelvic floor care especially during the latter stages of pregnancy can help prepare for a vaginal delivery but also prevent excessive tearing and damage to the pelvic floor. Such damage can lead to urinary and/or faecal incontinence or pelvic organ prolapse. These conditions can be evident within a couple of weeks after a delivery or may not arise until after the menopause. I recommend women see a specialist pelvic floor physiotherapist before and after their delivery. Most women with incontinence and prolapse can be treated with pelvic floor exercises alone. The more severe problems are amenable to surgery. An early assessment is key to avoiding surgery.

THERE ARE MANY health benefits of hot yoga - more than you would realise. Here are five reasons it’s great for your body in winter: 1. FIR heated hot yoga causes you to sweat which detoxifies your body. FIR waves helps with collagen production (youth boosting), boosts vitamin D production (and up to 80% of city dwellers are deficient in vitamin D). 2. Hot yoga and Pilates will give you a ‘hot body’ - a body that feels young and energetic. 3. In our busy society our mind is cluttered. Hot yoga and Pilates will give your mind space and will bring your health back. 4. Modern power yoga and Pilates burn as much calories as aerobics. Plus each 100 millilitres of sweat is 58 calories gone! 5. Healthy cravings: as your body gets in better shape, you will no longer crave unhealthy pick me up snacks, and you will start to want to eat nutrition dense food. The healthier you are and the better you feel, the more you will want to eat healthier, naturally!

HEALTH IS THE presence of psychological and physical wellbeing, not just the absence of illness or injury. There are many people who do not have a disease or infirmity but these people may not necessarily be well. Being ill is the presence of pathogens, however, true wellness reflects someone’s choice to have salutogens in their life. Salutogens is a fancy term to describe things that contribute to wellness - mindfulness meditation, healthy foods, massage, laughter, or owning a dog! To be truly well we need to work on ways to: • Develop emotional intelligence. • Ensure interesting study and work. • Clarify your life’s purpose and develop creativity. • Maintain intimate relationships. • Engage in exercise and nutritional eating. • Increase your quality thinking processes. • Ensure regular medical and dental checks. When we focus on being well via deliberate lifestyle and behavioural decisions we contribute to a happier, healthier and longer life.

TRAVEL

A TASTE OF SRI LANKA AN IMPULSIVE FEW clicks of the mouse landed me in Sri Lanka last month, ready to relax surrounded by the virtually untouched paradise. First stop, Colombo; my partner and I had two nights in this capital city filled with vibrant colour, loud conversation, overwhelming culture, tropical landscapes and picture perfect sunsets each evening. We felt on top of the world in our sky-high room that really showed the diversity of the city from up above. We started our first day basking in the rooftop sunshine, followed by wandering barefoot through temples, eating curries, toasting with Arrack-infused cocktails and chatting with the locals – time seemed to stop here. 90

Cantaloupe Levels

Christie Sutherland shares a step-by-step recount of her recent trip to the culturally rich island nation, Sri Lanka.

Day two dawned with the smell of a buffet breakfast and cultural festivals on the streets below. Once awake we decided to head to Mount Lavinia Hotel (the hotel was a classic reincarnation of the Pink Panther film set), by tuk-tuk, to visit the shell covered beaches of Colombo. After dashing in front of queues at the transport station the next day – to do what is never recommended... hire a car – we dealt with near death hysteria on the tiny roads, blasting the hooter along the Sri Lankan coastline (creating our own kind of soundtrack!). But thankfully it all ended safely in the European influenced town, Galle. The palm-fringed jungle welcomed us at our hotel, Cantaloupe Levels with a gentle wave; an

unexpected boutique retreat that catered for every request. We ate lounging on daybeds, swam till midnight, visited a Buddhist monument and found ourselves on a hidden shore overlooking the Indian Ocean for an afternoon. The next morning we scoured the streets for homemade roti and continued our journey past the towns of Marissa and Tangalle making our way up through the cool highlands of tea plantations and luscious rice fields. If that wasn’t beautiful enough, we then trekked to a waterfall and discovered the majestic mountain village, Ella. Covered in a luminous mist, the mountain peaks felt like we had arrived in heaven. MUST DO:

Cantaloupe Levels . . an unexpected boutique retreat that catered for every request.

We traded our car tyres for ‘chucks’ and started our 10,000 metre hike along the railway line up to Mount Ella among the wild daisies and enthusiastic school children. We reached the peak; it was one of those ‘and in that moment we were infinite’ occasions that humbled us as the cliché rain started falling on our way back down. A candle lit cocktail dinner with a deck of cards and vendor trawling had us waking up to leave this wonder with heavy hearts, but the next stop was Kandy, the Holy City where it all began. Cultures collide in Kandy – it was peaceful and perfect. From our colonial hotel balcony we were immersed in an Indian wedding, across from that Christian church bells were chiming and Buddhist Temple of the Tooth was in sight. The streets were bursting with waterlilies, flavoured with saffron, and lined with men in sarongs; it was a powerful sense of fusion that really makes you understand the rich history of such a diverse country. We then set off on the home run travelling through Negombo. Along the way we paused to sip on king coconut water, watch elephants stylemagazines.com.au

COVERED IN After a triangular trip of the southwest coast, we were back in Colombo. We proceeded to A LUMINOUS MIST, THE MOUNTAIN PEAKS invent a new way to dine so we did not miss out FELT LIKE WE HAD ARRIVED IN HEAVEN. on any taste bud fantasies, changing restaurants with each course, dining at Ministry of Crab, Nihonbashi, Cinnamon Grand and finally dessert at Sri Lanka’s top spot, Clique. It left us in a food coma to say the least, realising once again that we were nowhere near ready to leave these shores. But… every trip comes to an end; the sandy beaches, forested hills and unpretentious people will never be forgotten. The island left us stressfree and simply happy. We experienced the depth and desires of this nation. It is the never ending, choose-your-own-adventure type of destination READ ONLINE you need to tick off your to-do list.

FORGING SUCCESS

“1538 degrees is the melting point of iron — the base metal in steel which we use in most of our designs.”

Kitty Danger tells us how she and boyfriend Al Barras ‘accidentally’ started their industrial furniture business, fifteenthirtyeight. Tell me about your career journey? When I finished school I worked in construction — I think that was where I really developed a love of industrial materials and architecture. Then I worked as a TV extra on Home and Away. After this I studied journalism and went on to work as a publicist. I’ve now quit my day job to work full time on fifteenthirtyeight. Why did you start fifteenthirtyeight? Al and I struggled to find a coffee table anywhere that didn’t involve consuming meatballs, wasn’t a replica or wasn’t going to leave us with a hole in our pocket. So we (literally) decided to take things into our own hands and designed and built ourselves a coffee table.

READ Why the name ‘fifteenthirtyeight’? 1538 degrees is the melting point of iron – the base metal in steel which we use in most of our designs. What materials do you work with in your designs? We like to keep it industrial with steel, brass, concrete and glass but with the addition of modern trends like Calcutta marble. What inspires you?
