Spring is in the air

What’s your favourite thing What’ s your favourite to do in Brisbane? breakfast spot?

Spring has definitely sprung or has it? My wardrobe is in a spin switching from sweater to singlet and I'm wondering whether to book my first spray tan or not! I’m a huge fan of the colourful new spring collections coming out, but to be honest, I would like to have worn my boots and new fluffy jumpers just a little longer than that one weekend trip to Melbourne... Thankfully, I did not purchase those lust-worthy knee-high boots while I was there! Strappy heels, pencil skirts and bright pinks are my personal faves for spring. The warmer weather also means taking my top off every day while I cruise around town in my brand new baby, the Audi A3 Cabriolet!

Sharing is caring Capture and share what you love about Queensland at the statewide Instameet. By Jane Schon Instagram has clearly taken the world by storm. And with all the heat Facebook has been getting lately, some could argue it’s the most favoured form of social media right now. This fast, beautifully filtered, easy way to share your life with family and friends – or build fame from absolute obscurity – is fun, terribly addictive and it’s also a great way to get creative with others – even though the majority of your scrolling is done at home on your couch! One of our favourite things about Instagram is the promotion of creativity. It can make even the most trigger challenged seem like expert photographers. Since Instagram began people have shared photos together, whether it’s a shot of two lovebirds at their anniversary dinner or a group of friends trying to squeeze 20 people into one selfie. Gatherings over Instagram have become

so popular they’ve acquired a name, Instameets; people coming together to connect, explore and celebrate their creativity. Instameets are designed for one purpose; to create a more personal connection in the ever-growing impersonal social media world. The way it works is Instagrammers either find a meet-up in their city or create their own, then spread the word through Instagram, Twitter and Facebook to get as many Instagrammers as they can to join in. The group then picks a photogenic place to meet and use a unique hashtag to show the Instagram world the amazing images the group create together. As there’s a world record for just about everything, the current world record for an Instameet is held by the Californian Instagram group @IgersSanDiego, where the group organised

a meeting of 451 people to snap Haute As Ever, an annual event focused on fashion held at the Del Mar Racetrack in San Diego (#HauteAsEver13). On October 4, Queensland plans on smashing this record. By inviting six leading Australian Instagrammers, four international ‘grammers and more than 1,000 members of the general public to meet over 1.8 million square kilometres and through 1,000 mobile phones with four million combined followers, using one muse Queensland. #thisisqueensland will prompt a flurry of photographic action as Instagrammers snap pictures simultaneously across Queensland. Be part of this record-breaking attempt. Save the date, October 4, 2014. #thisisqueensland @queensland To find out more visit www.queensland.com/instameet

The woman behind the name

“Brisbane is a wonderful river city. I’ve lived here all my life and can’t see myself living anywhere else.”

Jane Schon sits down with one of the most down-to-earth politicians around, Teresa Gambaro, to see how her last year in office has treated her and how she deals with the pressures of the job. How was your past year in office? The past year has been busy and challenging, there have been a range of national issues to tackle. There has also been a range of constituent issues in areas of immigration, health, travel and assisting business to reduce red tape. Last year we spoke about your goals. How are things going with the main areas you identified - Economy, Congestion on Brisbane Roads, and the Cost of Childcare? Any new goals? I am very pleased to confirm every single one of my election promises is in the process of being delivered. There are a number of upgrades occurring in the electorate to assist in easing congestion. Recently Assistant Minister Sussan Ley and I visited childcare centres in the electorate, which has provided the Prime Minister information about the need for more flexibility and affordability in the sector. I see a priority to focus on mental health issues and homelessness. I am also in the early stages of developing a Women of Influence group in Brisbane to join forces with an annual cause to empower women and help them re-enter the workforce. How do you manage the pressure 16

that comes with your position? I try and exercise regularly, whether it be swimming or regularly going for walks with my husband, Robert, and our dog Frankie. Has your famous Brisbane name helped you in public office? Yes and no. At the end of the day it matters most what you do as an individual. I come from a hard working family and have my Grandfather, Father and my Uncle to thank for instilling a strong work ethic. It can be quite comical when I’m talking about constituent issues and they want to talk about fish. I still get fishermen ringing my office sometimes to sell their catch! Where do you see Brisbane in five years? Brisbane will continue to develop and become a vibrant economic hub that is friendly to visitors while still keeping hold of its compassionate community spirit and its heart. And yourself? I have the best job in the world, so I hope that in five years I’m still representing the people of Brisbane. The Honorable Teresa Gambaro MP Federal Member for Brisbane 209 Days Rd, Grange P 3356 1555 www.teresagambaro.com

Meet Kerrie Hess at Wintergarden’s VIP event on September 9. More in our Style Diary on p 40.

drawing on success With a portfolio peppered with names like Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, CHANEL, and Louis Vuitton, Style chatted to talented illustrator, author and fashionista, Kerrie Hess to find out more about her collaboration with the Wintergarden. Why did you decide to become an illustrator? I grew up in Brisbane, studying Graphic Design before taking the leap in London at 19 to become a full-time illustrator. Art and painting had just always been my passion. At the time I didn’t know anyone who did this for a living, so I felt like I was creating a job for myself that didn’t really exist! Where do you take your inspiration from? I can be inspired by street fashion, vintage couture gowns, or even beautiful packaging. I am always

looking for beauty and style ideas, but living in Paris until last year has probably been my greatest inspiration. I was lucky enough to exhibit a solo exhibition in Paris in January this year at Le Meurice Hotel held in Dali’s former ballroom, which was a magical experience. How did your collaboration with Wintergarden come about? The creative team from Wintergarden popped me a line, as followers of my Instagram account, we then got together

and discussed collaboration. As I tend to focus on keeping my collaborations with high-end brands, working with the Wintergarden was a perfect fit. What’s you favourite store at Wintergarden? I am a big fan of Coach and Sambag, but there are so many great little boutiques in there. If you weren’t an illustrator, what else would you do? I honestly don’t know! I have been doing this for nearly 17 years now. Obviously I’ve forgotten most of my Graphic Design degree!

Simone Weigall continues to sell properties for record prices! Simone Weigall just recently sold our family home in Wilston for more than we ever expected. We had previously attempted to sell our home with another agent from another realtor with no success. The experience we had with Simone as our agent was exceptional. The quality of marketing was superb and Simone’s knowledge of the area and recent sales was extensive and all this put together with her negotiating skills gave us the fantastic result and an extremely pleasant experience. 5 mins with Josslynn Hlenti Hailing from South Africa and in her first major musical theatre production, The Lion King’s Josslynn Hlenti talks to Style about visiting Australia, cooking Italian food, and her role as Nala. Is this your first time in Australia? How have you found it so far? Yes it is – I hadn’t been out of South Africa until I came here. I actually expected to come to Australia, and see sun all the time, and see tanned, blonde haired, blue-eyed surfers everywhere – and I didn’t at all (laughs). How did you get into musical theatre? Growing up I always wanted to be a doctor or a lawyer. But at around eight, I got on stage and thought, ‘ok, this is what I really want to do’. Being on stage; singing and dancing and performing and the sheer joy of standing in front of hundreds of people and sharing your gift with them is the most amazing experience. What do you like to do when you’re not performing? I love to cook! And I love pastas, so I am always cooking Italian food.

20

What did you have to do to prepare for the role? The Lion King is so physical, oh my gosh (laughs). I had always been slightly overweight and I had never done anything physical in my entire life, so when I was cast I had to change my lifestyle. Now I’m at the gym four times a week. What can we expect from the show? It’s a very high energy and powerful show. We have an amazing cast from South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. We are privileged to have an Aboriginal Mufasa which is an awesome thing. With us, you can feel the love. And, that is what audiences will do when they see it; they’re going to feel the love. “We wanted to create a spin on a ‘New York chic’ themed event,” says Styled Events’ Director, Brendan Cummings of the space which has been designed as a dedicated art and design studio gallery.

Foxy Styling Introducing a chic new look for The Fox Hotel’s Fish Lane Studio boutique event space. Something beautiful often happens when two creative forces meet. Such was the case when Styled Events was asked to style a sumptuous setting within The Fox Hotel’s new Fish Lane Studio event space. “We wanted to create a spin on a ‘New York Chic’ themed event,” says Styled Events’ Director, Brendan Cummings of the space which has been designed as a dedicated art and design studio gallery. “Just a stone’s throw from GOMA and the Queensland Art Gallery, Fish Lane Studios is South Brisbane’s latest focal point for culture and creativity, so what better way to work with the shell of the studio than introducing New York glamour through luxurious brushed gold, black and fuchsia pink.” Suspended chandeliers with grape vine trimming were also worked in to soften the ceiling whilst crystal glassware and double glass charger plates added a luxurious twist. 22

A black velvet lounge area coupled with modern black and white patterned furnishings was the perfect accompaniment for the entrance foyer. Business Development and Functions Manager, Ashleigh Bates, says after starting at The Fox and seeing the potential of Fish Lane Studios, she knew there was “no one else for the job than Brendan and his team”.

Get your own designer chairs for your next event at the special hire price of $6.00 each! t&cs apply.

“Their level of service and professionalism as well as their vast creativity make Styled Events my number one choice for event styling,” she says. “I’m always amazed at how they can transform any space into something truly special.” “I’m incredibly happy with the end result, it truly showcased the versatility of the gallery. I especially loved the pink accents, which really gave the room a lift, and who doesn’t love a chandelier! It would be perfect for an intimate wedding reception.” The multipurpose space is now available for hire for exhibitions and events with Styled Events proudly on hand to add their own signature flair to your next function. The wise man once said… Style gets to know the specialist behind the ‘My Wisdom Tooth Dr’ brand, Dr. Julian Hirst. What do you love most about your job? I love that I don’t have a job that is just shuffling paper. It’s real, and emotional and more of a lifestyle than a job. Why is it important to have your wisdom teeth checked often? It’s really important everyone over 14 years old have an OPG X-ray, which shows whether they have wisdom teeth and whether they have enough room for these teeth. If you don’t have room, the risks of having them removed are much lower when you are young. The wisdom teeth are very close to a nerve in the lower jaw that gives sensation to the lower lip and chin. Being young and being treated by a specialist Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon will minimise the risk of having permanent numbness of this area. A taste of oldworld glamour you’ll love to call your own!

the Family jewels South Family Jewellers take pride in displaying innovative, eye-catching and virtually one-of-a-kind items their clients can treasure for a lifetime. Alison Paterson

For over 13 years, South Family Jewellers have built a reputation of providing the highest quality range of fine jewellery to the Brisbane community. Proprietor and Manager, Alison Paterson has developed a boutique style jewellery store that provides customers with life long memories that will last for generations. Alison emphasises the store’s philosophy is focused around the customer and the importance of the purchase they’re making. “Jewellery is an emotional purchase and an emotional gift,” Alison says. “It’s not about having masses of jewellery items, it’s about the story and the feeling that comes with each piece, whether they’ve received it through inheritance or new.”

“We particularly enjoy the interaction with our customers and find it gratifying when an item is chosen, as we know it will make some special person happy.” Alison says her staff have been integral to the success of the store, particularly through individual jewellery restorations. “People appreciate that the workshop is on-site. They can speak to the jeweller directly and discuss their ideas face to face, building a necessary relationship and making sure the piece is right for the person who’s receiving it.” South Family Jewellers have perfected a unique style with their collection, displaying a multitude of pieces using rich, coloured, semi-precious

stones as well as diamonds set in interesting and intricate designs. “A lot of people think our store sells antique jewellery, but I like to think of it as oldworld glamour.” South Family Jewellers The Gap Village Shopping Centre, 1000 Waterworks Rd, The Gap P 3300 9333 www.southfamilyjewellers.com.au

Asian InsPIRED

Kim Duffin talks updating interiors by creating connections between living areas and their new owners. This sky home with stunning views over the river and botanical gardens captures the maturity now found in inner city living in Brisbane. After living and working for the best part of the last decade in Europe and Asia, the inhabitants of the apartment decided to live in Brisbane upon their return to Australia. They felt that the city had thrived in their absence and could now offer them a cosmopolitan lifestyle they had enjoyed overseas. Therefore it was important that their new home also reflect this through modern design and functionality. The original layout of the kitchen was typical for apartments built 20 years ago. The space was restricted by the collection of small rooms that didn’t take advantage of the views or the need for stylemagazines.com.au

a strong connection between living areas. The brief given to Kim Duffin from Kim Duffin Design, was simple: create a space where entertaining can be done effortlessly while allowing for a greater connection between the kitchen, dining and living spaces to the balcony and views of the river/gardens. The homeowners wanted to see what they liked about the countries they had visited to be reflected in their new space. They also had beautiful furniture and art works, collected both here and overseas, that they wanted to complement the kitchen. The key elements that bring the design to life are the colour palette of green and blue plus the custom design bamboo printed glass splashback. Both of these elements reflect the homeowners’

These elements tie in their extensive collection of Asian art and collectables plus keep the space fresh and modern. The cabinet design, linear and defined, then brings the contemporary influences often seen in European kitchen design. A typical galley kitchen design was selected as it best catered for how the space relates to the hallway (moving between entry door, bedrooms and living areas). The flow from the start point at the rear of the space (housing ingredients in the pantry/fridge) to preparation then delivery to the dining area is seamless. Jack Sullivan | 26 | Wedding Gown and Red Carpet Designer

Style chats to Jack Sullivan, son of award winning bridal designer, Wendy Sullivan about his own unique style and the latest trends in bridal fashion.

“Be yourself, everybody else is already taken.”

How would you describe your style? If I had to put a title on it, I would say ‘Quirky European’. When did you become interested in style? When I entered the fashion industry, I had to be well presented more often than not. People don’t want to buy a designer gown from someone that is dressed in thongs and shorts. As a bridal designer does your work influence your style? As a creative person, I have always been pretty out there and what I wear is a reflection of that. What’s your go-to item/what do you live in? A white t-shirt with a blazer is a standard go to. Being a pasty white guy that can’t tan, lighter colours seem to be my friend. Any fashion faux pas? Brown belt and black shoes, if you’re doing that – wake up to yourself! Your most indulgent fashion purchase? My Cloakroom window checked jacket. Your best budget-buy? A blue and whitestriped blazer I got on sale from Brent Wilson. What’s your favourite new-season trend in the bridal world? A single layer of soft flowing tulle off the hip line over a fitted skirt giving the effect of two silhouettes. What fashion trend will you never try? It’s hard to say never to something, but I don’t see myself wearing a Flat Peak any time soon. Your favourite Brisbane men’s store?

Pistols at Dawn. Any wedding day dress no, nos? With weddings I like to think, ‘timeless not trendy’. While the Bridal World does follow outside trends, you have to remember you will be looking back on these photos for years to come. Do you prefer… Boxers or briefs? Briefs. Smart suits or cool casual? A casual suit, nothing too corporate. Short back and sides or a little scruffy? Scruffy. Where can we find you….. On a Saturday night? At one of my local haunts around West End, or somewhere in the Valley. On a Sunday morning? Normally on Struggle Street. On your next holiday? Vancouver, New York and London for a working holiday.

Form and substance Lucy Stephens discovers a bustling bistro in the ’burbs. If you live in the ‘burbs, and you’ve just moved to a new one, often the first task you set yourself is finding your new ‘locals’. Local bar, local café and local supermarket. If you’re lucky, your local will be half decent. If you’re very lucky, your local might be Form 7Even (Form Seven). Don’t let the name fool you. It’s not a convenience store masquerading as a café, it’s a bona fide bistro in the Northern Suburbs. Form 7even serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, topnotch Elixir coffee - and an ample array of wines, beer and spirits. It’s in a cosy but funky little spot in Stafford Heights. Coffee bean bags line one wall, with a full length bar lining the other. There’s plenty of outside dining as well, which we hear fills up quickly at breakfast on the weekend. After hearing about it recently from friends in the area, I headed in with my colleague Candice to try the lunch offerings.

We selected the fried baby octopus with smoked paprika from the tapas menu, and the chicken and avocado hoagie (a chicken baguette) with shoestring fries and garlic aioli, and the warm duck salad with beetroot, pine nuts and sweet soy and ginger dressing from the standard lunch menu. All were exceptionally presented (slate, fry pan and bread boards), looking like something you’d find in a fancy CBD bistro with a higher price tag. And they were delicious. The hoagie was impressive in size; after an initial attempt with a knife and fork, we surrendered to the tried and true method of eating with one’s hands. Word on the street is that these guys will soon be opening their doors for lunch on Sundays too. Form 7even Café 69 Wilgarning st, Stafford Heights p 3630 5225 www.form7even.com.au

CHOOSING THE RIGHT LOCATION

colour your future

Property Settlement

We are frequently reminded that it’s the most important factor when choosing a residential investment, but what is the perfect location? How do we know where to buy to get the best possible long-term capital growth and highest consistent net rental yield? Here are some key factors to consider before choosing an investment property. Ensure the property is within close proximity to schools and hospitals, existing and expanding infrastructure, various lifestyle amenities and transport hubs with close access to the CBD. Finding highly desirable areas with high percentages of owner-occupiers, and higher than average income demographics, will generally result in strong demand from discerning tenants. And importantly, pay attention to the basic rule of supply and demand. Buy in an area that has limited supply of existing new, highend properties for rent and restricted future development sites. Areas with low rental supply generally result in higher consistent rental demand.

I recently watched a Star Trek movie on TV (don’t judge me!) and I must confess I’m not really a “Trekkie” and when it comes to sci-fi movies in general, I’m a bit “ho-hum”. As I sat and watched Mr Spock get “beamed up” it struck me why so many of these sci-fi movies do not appeal to me at all; there is NO colour. Have a look and you’ll see what I mean. Every spaceship and futuristic world that I can think of seems to be bereft of art and colour. It got me thinking as to why? If a futuristic world can develop technology to go into “hyper-drive”, travel through galaxies or build drones or robots that can do virtually anything - what’s so hard about putting a few pictures on the wall? So my challenge to you is to make sure your future is colourful. Make sure that you fulfil that essential human characteristic that yearns for the colours of nature - not just concrete - to make your personal castle (or spaceship) enriching, welcoming and beautiful.

When calculating a property settlement the Court will not consider whose decision it was to end the relationship or their reasons for doing so when splitting the property. The Court will consider: • The net property pool; this includes all assets at the date of the settlement or trial, regardless of when they were acquired. The property pool will be reduced by the marital debts such as the mortgage on a house, credit card debt and any capital gains tax involved in selling the property. • The contributions each party made to the accumulation of the property pool; whether it is a financial contribution or a non-financial and homemaker parenting contribution. • How the future needs of the parties will be met. For example, who will be caring for the children and what is the earning capacity of each party. • Finally, is the division of assets fair between a split of current assets and future superannuation? The division of assets following a marriage breakdown is a complicated process. Early advice from a family lawyer is recommended.

Race Stopping Styling

the hub of entertaining

Tips on new season trends

The race that stops a nation is now around the corner and just as a fascinator or a bow tie completes an outfit, so too does immaculate styling bring the perfect finishing touch a Cupworthy venue. Traditionally, a bright and vibrant pop of colour against an overarching palette of black and white has been the call of the day, such as bold hits of lime and orange or a punch of pink. This year however, a sparkling formality will be introduced with luxe metallics and shimmering accents bringing a feeling of glamour to the otherwise monochromatic base. This look will still tie in with the fresh, outdoors feel of the event itself, but there will be an extravagance factor not seen before. Imagine sequined gold cloths paired with brushed gold candle sticks then highlighted with a proliferation of vibrant blooms. The key to its success is to keep the colour burst to one bold hue to really ensure a memorable and classy look.

Open plan living has certainly put the emphases on how much the kitchen plays a part in entertaining. As we move into the warmer months, our homes become the meeting point for spirited family gatherings, lazy lunches with friends or a Sunday brunch. When designing a kitchen space, the focus is on how the design will enhance how you live. This is the number one reason why people seek out a design professional to gain perspective on how the kitchen can engage better with adjoining living spaces while meeting their day to day needs. If you are serious about enhancing your entertaining experience, the key component in a kitchen design is the island. An island provides many functions, a meeting point where guests can engage with the chef, additional preparation space and act as a servery when dinner is being served. It is also the one design element where your personal style can enhance the overall look and feel of your new kitchen. So with the right design the island will become the hub for great entertaining.

At Mama’s Home it’s not all about maternity gear, so we are getting really excited about the latest Spring/Summer ladies fashion collections coming in store. get you Brand heard

Top Travel packing Tips

The Super Checklist

The most important component of any relationship, commercial or personal, is emotion. Emotion drives every decision, particularly when it comes to purchases, but creating brand noise and telling consumers who you are is only one step in the process. Fundamentally, people buy from people. On a larger scale, individuals buy from brands they feel an affinity and emotional connection with. The communication mediums available, from edm and social media to broader above line strategies, provide opportunity to create customer “stickiness” once your brand is identified. We recommend our clients use a multichannel approach for all campaigns, to reinforce a message, increase customer connection and revenues. The key to make your brand connection is personality, who and what you are about. This should be interwoven at the core of every message and interaction with your company. Invest in your brand personality and the noise you create will be heard.

we know travelling is one of the best experiences money can buy, however, knowing what to pack can be quite stressful. I hope these suggestions will help you. • Pack lightly – have a couple of neutral pants and tops, and layer with a pashmina for colour. • Pack a torch – handy for finding bathrooms in strange bedrooms. • Take an empty water bottle, which you can fill on board to have a water supply at your seat. • Take lip and skin moisturiser on a long flight. • Take your phone/camera chargers on the flight – most airlines have charging points at the seat. • Remember to switch your cellular data off to ensure no nasty phone bills. • Do not pack any valuable items in your checked luggage and take a photo of your luggage in case it takes its own holiday! • Double check that you have your passport and documents with you when you leave home. And finally, check out our September promotion in-store with great discounts on Tosca luggage!

1. Ensure your super fund has your correct contact details. 2. Review how your super is invested and if you are comfortable with it. 3. Do you have multiple super accounts? Do you wish to reduce administration? Do they have insurance attached? 4. Use an online calculator to estimate how much you will need to be comfortable when you retire. 5. Check the criteria used and in what circumstances total and permanent disablement insurance will be paid. 6. Check how long the fund will pay your income replacement insurance. 7. Check your latest statement to see if your super fund has recorded your tax file number. If not you could be liable to pay more tax. 8. Do you have a current ‘Nomination of Beneficiary’ in place? Does it reflect your current wishes? Is the beneficiary under 18?

A New Era in BBQ-ing

Balancing mum and baby

Renovate and add value

Clearly the humble backyard BBQ has come a long way. At Aussie BBQs we stock some great options in the gas BBQ market with brands such as Weber, BeefEater, Grand Fire, DCS and Broil King boasting high quality finishes, refinement and no shortage of bells and whistles. Different fuel types such as charcoal, pellets and wood, accompanied by rubs, brines and sauces, opens up an entirely new world of flavour. Smoking fish, slow cooking ribs and pulled pork, wood fired pizza, flame grilled steaks and chops over charcoal are just some BBQ specialties that come to mind. At Aussie BBQs we stock a range of wood pellet BBQs, charcoal and hardwood BBQs, every type of Smoker, gas and Woodfired Pizza ovens. We range from “set and forget” Bradley Electric Smokers, to the US made Yoder wood pellet smokers (which heat up as quickly as a gas BBQ!), to wood-fired offset smokers, to Zesti Pizza Ovens that reach temperatures in excess of 600 degrees, as well as charcoal grills and rotisseries for that unbeatable flavour.

I have the two best jobs in the world... being a mum and a photographer! Some would say being a working mum is like having two fulltime jobs but, with my love of photography and children, balancing home and work is easy. During the day, I get to cuddle adorable newborns as young as four days old, make silly noises to get the older bubs to crack a smile, and play along with the cheeky toddlers. All while watching the excitement on mum and dad’s faces as I capture their family’s memories. Maintaining the flexibility of being there for my own cherubs and hubby at home is certainly one of my main focuses, but this time at home also helps my work. After all, who better to work with kids than a mum! For me, no two days are the same because no two families are the same, just like no two pieces of art are the same. Because of this I’m always trying to create something unique for each new family that walks through my doors. I love creating individual memories and personalised art that lasts a lifetime.

By renovating before putting your home on the market you can ensure you’ll be adding maximum value, taking you one step closer to your desired price tag. Here’s my advice… 1. It’s a well-known fact that the key areas in most homes are the front exterior of the house, kitchen, bathroom and alfresco areas so focus on these key areas and do them well. 2. Set a budget and cost your renovation in detail. The ‘cheapest’ quote will often cost you more. Once a budget is set, a good builder will keep you on track. Talk to your builder BEFORE finalising your design. 3. To avoid over capitalising do your research, and seek professional advice from an experienced builder and interior designer. 4. Prioritise all of the changes and upgrades in order of what will provide greatest impact and return. For example, in older homes provide a natural light source by introducing skylights or sky windows. 5. Don’t forgo quality. A few quality fixtures make all the difference.

Mercedes-Benz Brisbane Melbourne Cup Gala

Miranda Priestley’s famed line from The Devil Wears Prada, “Florals? For Spring? Groundbreaking” lives on in infamy, but the protest is proven wrong each time spring is sprung. Style recently visited Toowoomba for a sneak peak of the Carnival of Flowers 2014. Be sure to head up this month for the Floral parade, displays in three local parks and residential gardens, the Culture to Couture fashion show, the wine trail - when 20 local cellar doors will swing open - and plenty of live music, as well as all the local attractions.

Can’t quite make it to Flemington this year? Celebrate at the MercedesBenz Brisbane Melbourne Cup Gala! Hosted by Channel Nine’s Melissa Downes on Tuesday, November 4. The City Hall event includes a three-course luncheon by Epicure, with canapés on arrival, Moët & Chandon Champagne, and Craggy Range wines, and will raise funds for The AEIOU Foundation – for children with Autism. A full-scale fashion show will keep you entertained, featuring leading Australian designers and of course, watch the race live.

The collection, titled Temptress, has been designed especially for Bosz Gallery and will feature a must-see series, Game of Stones.

Galans of talent Kellie Alderman profiles the man behind the label - the star attraction at a fashionable fundraising lunch in Brisbane this month. Arthur Galan is a rare breed in fashion – he doesn’t court the spotlight, he understands the business of fashion as thoroughly as he knows the creative side and his brand has been getting stronger every year since he began in 1998. The designer was an instant hit in his hometown of Melbourne when he launched onto the scene with menswear but it wasn’t until he released his womenswear collections in 2006 that he began, in earnest, his climb to the top of the Australian designer tree. Since signing with Myer in 2011, the label has grown into one of the country’s most recognized names, with his signature of quality fabrics and timeless design earning him a loyal fan base and 22 stores.

Arthur’s wife of 16 years, Mimi Galan, is also instrumental in the business; the pair married the day after their second store opened in Melbourne. Arthur comes from a family of tailors but studied commerce at Melbourne University before coming back to the fashion industry. The pair have two children. This year Arthur Galan was named Australian Fashion Laureate for Best Menswear Brand and, on September 12, Brisbane has the chance to

meet him in person as he brings his summer collection to town for an exclusive lunch and parade at Cloudland in aid of the Same Sky charity. For more information and tickets go to: katarzyna.com.au

Catwalk to Compassion

The extreme poverty Jacqui witnessed inspired her to help raise awareness and funds for communities of Sierra Leone.

Brisbane fashion puts its best foot forward on the catwalk to help West African communities. On friday, October 31 Cloudland will transform into a fashion powerhouse for the second annual Catwalk to Compassion. The annual event utilises fashion as a fund raising platform to incite young adults of Brisbane to make a difference for impoverished global communities, in particular Sierra Leone in West Africa. All proceeds from the event are donated to Paradise 4 Kids (P4K) to contribute to the development of a toilet block and hand washing facilities, as well as education into basic health hygiene for the children at the Syke St School compound. Opt for simple silhouettes, classic cuts and luxurious fabrics. Here are our tips for a chic polo look: • Avoid stilettos – to avoid that sinking feeling opt for a glamorous pair of flats or wedges. • Leave fascinators for the races – wide brim hats are a chic choice. • Sunglasses are essential – aN oversized PAIR OF sunglasses will add a touch of glamour.

chicks at the flicks Fancy a movie date with your gal pals? Event Cinemas are hosting Gone Girl for ‘Chicks at the Flicks’ this October – and have 2 lots of passes for you and 5 friends! Everyone loves a good chick flick, right? Well, the next instalment of Event Cinema’s Chicks at the Flicks event on October 1 will be a chick flick with a difference, with an advance screening of the spine-tingling thriller Gone Girl. Starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike as married couple Nick and Amy Dunne, the film is an adaptation of the New York Times’ Best Selling author Gillian Flynn’s novel of the same name telling the story of a marriage gone horribly wrong. On the couple’s fifth wedding anniversary, Nick reports that his wife is missing. Under mounting pressure from media and police, Nick’s picture of

an idyllic union soon begins to crumble. Hailed as the published phenomenon of the year, author Gillian Flynn has been involved with the adaptation, which features a celebrated ‘re-write’ of the unexpected ending. Chicks at the Flicks guests enjoy a host of girly features, from stalls to lucky door prizes as well as a fantastic goodie bag brimming with food samples and beauty products.

STyle and Event Cinemas are giving away 2 prize packs for for you and five friends to see this gritty thriller, valued at $300, on Wednesday October 1 at your Event Cinema of choice, with pre-event activities starting at 6pm. The Queensland Premier recently visited a local construction site and announced we’ve seen a 33% increase in cranes on the skyline and a 25% increase in the number of construction approvals. The only drawback is properties move extremely quickly as the suburb is in high-demand. So you’ve got to get in quick to score the one you love!

Soul sessions

If you’re looking at hosting a Sunday sesh of your own, top of your list should be live music! Since playing in Aria award-winning band george alongside his sister Katie, successful musician Tyrone Noonan has kept himself busy. After working in the US and the UK, the successful musician is now back in Brisbane and wears many hats, performing in two bands (Palimpsest; a soul/funk band and The Pleasure Set; a covers band) as a soloist, a DJ and even an MC at events and functions around South East Queensland. Tyronenoonan.com

The Brunswick Hotel’s Brad Whitton hopes their new garden bar will become a Sunday session favourite for locals. Open less than a month, the bar offers a refreshing and relaxing vibe, and a retractable roof to ensure perfect outdoor dining in any weather. In his recently renovated kitchen, Head Chef, Brett Dorrstein is whipping up a variety of mod-Oz style dishes from an array of delectable tapas to larger mains of pizza, pasta and steaks. Stop by for an al fresco Champagne breakfast with French fizz for $10 a glass! The Brunswick Hotel 569 Brunswick St, New Farm P 3850 0000 www.thebrunswickhotel.com.au

Sunday Burger

With its calendar filled with a live entertainment five nights a week, an impressive drinks menu and just a general chilled out vibe, it is no wonder that The Plough Inn has already been crowned with the title of ‘the best Sunday Session’ in Brisbane. As one of Brisbane’s oldest buildings it balances antique charm with a modern twist, creating a place that is undoubtedly a local icon. You will find The Plough Inn nestled in the bustling South Bank parklands, where it enjoys quite possibly the best unspoilt city views. It boasts several bars that can cater for quiet drinks after work, bottles of Champagne to celebrate any occasion or cocktails on a girl’s night out. Whatever the occasion and whatever your drink, The Plough Inn will have you sorted. And as we all know not to drink on an empty stomach, why not grab a plate of their famous Hickory BBQ Pork Ribs or the daily special to go with that craft beer? They begin serving lunch from 11am and dinner from 4.30pm on Sundays. And with October marking The Plough Inn’s 150-year anniversary, they have packed out the whole month with loads of opportunities to come and celebrate with them. So say goodbye to a lazy afternoon and say hello to the large open-air deck and Brisbane’s best beer garden, as we can’t think of a better time to get reacquainted with The Plough Inn than this Sunday. The West End favourite pride themselves on sourcing the best seasonal and local produce to create their delicious mains and tantalising treats. 70

Managing Director of Styled Events, Brendan Cummings thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of conceptualising theme ideas for the bistro’s interior. “The use of metallic soft furnishings, embellished lanterns and pops of pink and blue contrast the dark lacquered wooden in-built seating in the restaurant,” he says. “We’ve created a number of versatile themes to accentuate the bistro’s rustic yet romantic appeal.” Available for Christmas parties, weddings, birthdays and more, catering for 10 to 150 people, choose from two alfresco tropical gardens or the private upstairs dining space with a balcony overlooking the vibrant West End street scene. Sky’s the limit Plan your relaxed, rooftop reception at Limes Hotel. Limes Rooftop Bar is the epicentre of style and sophistication in the Brisbane city bar scene. However, most would not think weddings when they hear the name. Since the recent refurbishment of the popular sky-high hangout, with Hotelier, Damian Griffiths giving designer Travis Walton (Pretty Please and Threefold) the task of transforming Limes rooftop into a completely new, super cool bar, the venue has become more than just somewhere for people to have a drink. The ‘community-based urban hub’ is ideal for different types of activities, like yoga and pilates, featuring a fun, resort-style private area, complete

Surrounded by glass, overlooking the urban sprawl of Fortitude Valley, you and your guests can indulge in a selection of delicious canapés by the poolside, perfect for groups of up to 70. This space also has a private bar - with consumption-based bar tabs or cocktail packages on offer - large flame heaters in winter and a fully retractable roof, making it ideal for any time of year. And you’ll still be able to suffer through the embarrassing (but mostly heartfelt) speeches with

Abby: ceremonial tips Abby gives her tips on making the ceremony exactly what you want on your special day. She should know, she is a celebrant and officiated at Ryan and Yasmin’s ceremony! Think about including family members or close friends who you weren’t able to put in the bridal party into the ceremony by asking them to say a reading or blessing. Your marriage celebrant can give you examples of vows and there are

Labby: receptionista When it comes to reception venues... here are two of Labby’s faves! For classy and country-style check out Maleny Manor... secluded on a private estate, it has hinterland and ocean views, amazing gardens if you want to host drinks outside and a private reception room in case of bad weather. If you want a stylish and pimpin’ venue, you don’t get more rockstar than the Brisbane luxury charter, Pure Adrenalin. This 27m luxury motor yacht can hold up to 76 guests, it has a full kitchen for catering and room for a DJ and dancing at the back. It also has an amazing sun lounge up front to chill out and watch the sunset.

Last month, Labby, Stav and Abby organised a wedding for the beautiful Ryan and Yasmin. Yasmin is suffering from a rare form of cancer, so B105 wanted to make the day extra special for them.

plenty to be found online, but how about using them as a template to personalise your vows? Anything from the heart is better than anything anyone else can write for you. Ask your marriage celebrant to email you a copy of the ceremony at least a week prior to the wedding. Besides the legal wording, a good marriage celebrant should be flexible and conscientious enough to make it perfect for you and your partner.

Emcee-ing a wedding is nerve-wracking at the best of times, so you don’t need your jokes falling flat. Here’s a list of Stav’s top three jokes to avoid… Welcome to the marriage of Bob and Linda. First off, don’t the bridesmaids look lovely, although they are all wearing the same thing. When Anthony met Ange he knew he had met Mrs Right, he just didn’t realise her first name was Always. Gavin and Stacey belong together and she should know cause she has slept with all his mates. SEPTEMBER14

Social media vs matrimony Style chats with Tattersall’s Wedding Coordinator, Claire Dean on the modern wedding etiquette. With most people checking their social media accounts within moments of waking up, is it any surprise we have begun to see it used more and more at weddings? Claire Dean, Wedding Coordinator at the prestigious Tattersall’s, says, while social may mean the bride is no longer the first person to release her wedding pictures to the world, it’s also provided couples with a plethora of choice. “Social Media means suppliers have to ensure they are delivering a high standard of service as feedback is travelling faster than ever,” she says. “Couples can really pick and choose what’s right for their day.” Claire says speeches have changed the most in recent decades – no longer playing the significant role they once did. As a classic venue, Tattersall’s has successfully managed to stay on top of this modernisation of weddings by offering a range of unique and versatile

stylemagazines.com.au

options for the big day. “No matter what style or type of wedding, we offer flexibility with menus, all-inclusive package options, and access to a range of preferred suppliers. We have found couples are inviting a smaller guest list, and are now offering subsets of the Grand Ballroom or the Chandelier Room, instead of our larger spaces.” And while Pinterest can give endless flower arrangement examples, there is nothing like the stress-free service of a personal wedding coordinator that Tattersall’s provides each couple. Proving there are some things the Internet can’t replace! Tattersall’s 215 Queen St, City P 3331 8866 weddings@tattersallsclub.com www.tattersallsclub.com.au/functions/ weddings

waterfront wedding Get the dream venue on the dream budget! Most of the time, a wedding with a spectacular waterfront view will cost you an arm, a leg and a torso. But the new owners of La Vue Waterfront Restaurant want to offer this dream wedding experience at a fraction of the cost. Accommodating up to 100 sit down and 150 stand up guests and serving up a Modern Australian menu with an infusion of French, we predict La Vue will be a tough competitor for some of the biggest names in Brisbane waterfront dining. Nestled in the gorgeous parklands, the newly refurbished spot on Queen Street boasts an elegant interior of polished Jarrah wood floors coupled with pristine white linen and walls lined

with stunning bronze mirrors - making it possible to see the picturesque views of the Brisbane River and Story Bridge no matter where you are positioned. The Parisian influence on the cuisine is mirrored by elements of the dĂŠcor, with decorative, wrought iron framing the exterior reminiscent of a street corner bistro in Paris. The driving force behind the venue is Kenny Brown, who definitely knows his way around the

floor with over 25 years industry experience. Kenny says he plans to offer opulent dining for any budget, with mains starting from $19 at lunch and $35 at dinner - including sides. Kenny says they are happy to meet with couples to outline every detail of the budget before your big day to ensure no unexpected blowouts! Facial redness

are we being shortchanged?

Are carbs the enemy?

seven out of 10 people develop mild to severe symptoms of facial redness, and it’s almost universal in sun-aged skins with 30-50 year old Caucasian women being the most susceptible. Some of the symptoms are: Acne - Hormones that caused breakouts in your teens can cause them again in adulthood with pimples more likely to appear on your jaw line, neck, cheeks, and T-zone. Rosacea – Indicators for this chronic rash include pustules, frequent blushing or flushing, dry facial skin, and aggravation by sun exposure and hot and spicy foods or drinks. Photo ageing – Excessive sun exposure and free radical damage can lead to collagen loss and can thin skin over time. This can cause the underlying blood vessels to become more conspicuous therefore producing redness. Skin Sensitivity – These skins usually have impaired natural protection and can always appear red. If you have a redness condition you would like to improve contact our practitioners.

Watching the first Bledisloe rugby test, it struck me how little play the spectators get to see. The lengthy packing and repacking of scrums, only to then award a penalty, frustrated me no end. I estimate 20 minutes were lost for stoppages. I appreciate the forwards are doing an incredible amount of work during this down time, compared to the backs, but the spectators are just not getting enough. Rugby league amuses me too, where the clock keeps ticking for conversion attempts, until the last period in a match! Then to my own sport, cricket. There is a set minimum overrate, which is so leniently policed the purpose of it is defeated. A minimum amount of play per day in the set time of six hours sounds simple but why is it rarely achieved? Because it’s allowed to be wrought, that’s why. Allowances I guess are acceptable for the changing of batsmen but not the extensive list of other claims. Professional sports, who pay very well, need to examine their value proposition to the public who are also paying very well to see not enough.

Many myths exist around carbohydrates. So I would like to debunk the negativity surrounding this popular nutrient, often nicknamed carbs! Fact: People often fall into the trap of dieting and cutting out all carbohydrate foods. However, carbohydrates are an important source of fibre, vitamins and minerals and should make up around 40% of your energy intake. Fact: Carbohydrates provide energy to fuel our brains and our muscles. So starving yourself of carbohydrates is effectively starving your brain, not a wise idea! Limit your intake of processed, packaged carbohydrate options and go for whole foods with minimal added sugar and low GI to keep you fuller for longer. Myth: There’s no scientific evidence that supports cutting out all carbohydrates from your diet after 5pm! For lasting satisfaction, adding a well-portioned wholegrain carbohydrate to your main meal may well do the trick. A healthy diet is about balance, not restriction! Find some extra tips on how to choose nutritious foods that satisfy your hunger on our website.

developing excellence

Pregnancy and Varicose Veins

DEMAND FOR BETTER performance has never been higher. Although we’re competent, we all struggle at times because we lack energy, resilience, and stamina. So here’s a few tips to keep yourself on track... Focus your attention inward by eliminating distractions and stay on tasks for extended periods of time. By altering your consciousness, you maintain flow. When skills are well matched to challenges it’s easier to stay ‘in the zone’. Develop excellence through deliberate practice. This involves effortful exertion, staying with tasks that are within reach of your ability, and lots of repetition. Have a clear set of goals and measure progress. A good balance between the perceived challenges of the task and your perceived skills is needed. Self-management through daily practice, brief work sessions, realistic deadlines, and keeping anxiety at bay is important. Binge working is usually counterproductive but a commitment to hours of occasional lonely work is necessary.

When pregnant, your body is producing extra volumes of blood to support you and your baby. This can put additional pressure on your blood vessels; especially those in the legs, making your veins work harder to circulate the blood throughout the body. While weight gain during pregnancy is normal, excessive weight gain can put extra strain and stress on blood vessels. Also your body is going through numerous changes to be able to house your baby, one being an increase in progesterone - a hormone that relaxes your blood vessels in addition to softening cartilage and keeping your little one safe. Here are some tips to help you deal with varicose veins during your pregnancy: • Get your blood circulating by taking a walk or performing low-aerobic activity. • Wear compression stockings to help relieve pain in the legs and give your veins more support. • Avoid standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time, walk or stretch every hour to avoid excess pressure on the blood vessels.

Having neat, defined eyebrows frames the eyes, boosts facial symmetry and creates an attractive high-contrast look. Perfect eyebrows will wipe years off the age clock - it’s what we like to call a virtual facelift. There are two ways that you can achieve this virtual facelift. The most common is a brow wax and tint every four to six weeks. Then using brow pencil every day to enhance. But the most beneficial way is having your eyebrows perfected is by Cosmetic Tattooing. Cosmetic Tattooing is not expensive if you look at the overall cost of continuous brow waxing and tinting. Statistically the average lady will spend from $480-$840 and six to 12 hours per year on brow waxing and tinting. Whereas with cosmetic tattooing, the initial visit is from $399-$699 and a yearly touch up starts from $150. Yearly savings of $100. But the real savings come in the years after, with savings of $200-$300 per year, which you can instead put towards a well-deserved minibreak!

Tap into moisture Discover the pros of using an oil-based moisturiser from Brookie Jesberg at Brooklyn Beauty Bar. When we think of oil in moisturisers we automatically think of greasy breakouts, right? Well you’re mistaken! Oil-based moisturisers are a key solution in combating and regulating our PH levels. Did you know that bacteria can’t survive in oil? Having a balanced oil flow is proven to stop bacteria growth and slows down an over active sebum production, which means less oil flow results in fewer breakouts. What people don’t realise is that your skin is waterproof, so when applying a waterbased cream to your skin, it will repel it. Thus leading to dehydration and premature ageing. Eeek! When comparing oil-based and water-

based creams, the results speak for themselves: -Oil-based creams will retain moisture in your skin for up to 10 hours. -Water-based cream will only retain its moisture for up to 2 hours. Remember the next time you’re shopping for the perfect skincare product, don’t remove your oil, regulate it! Go get your sassy slick on peeps, because oil is good! Brookie xx

Irena recommends a course of targeted laser treatments to improve colour and texture. The nonsurgical procedure uses laser light to break down the marks leaving you with smoother, healthier looking skin.

Treat unsightly stretch marks with just a few easy laser treatments at Irena Morgenstern Skin Management. Stretch Marks! They appear at any age and can be a serious confidence breaker. They are regrettably one of the ‘perks’ of puberty, weight gain and most commonly, pregnancy. Not much can be done to prevent them but they are certainly treatable. Stretch marks are torn collagen and elastin fibres in desperate need of repair. Irena Morgenstern of Irena Morgenstern Skin Management employs the most advanced lasers to address this common concern. “We have plenty of mums looking to regain their confidence post-pregnancy but stretch marks are not just limited to mothers,” she says. “Men, professional athletes, or people who have experienced rapid weight gain are also seeking professional advice on how to eliminate

them. It’s rewarding to be able to offer them a solution through modern technologies.” Irena recommends a course of targeted laser treatments to improve colour and texture. The non-surgical procedure uses pulses of fractional laser light to break down the marks leaving you with smoother, better-looking skin. Each treatment plan is targeted to the individual, and the clinic offers complimentary consultations to determine a plan that’s right for you. “There are a number of factors that

influence the correction of your skin,” Irena says. “Our technicians are honest, supportive and fully transparent about both your expectations and ours.” Along with stretch marks, laser technology can treat scar tissue, dilated pores and assist with skin rejuvenation and resurfacing. Treatments are fast, easy and, best of all, there’s no down time! Irena Morgenstern Skin Management 87 Albert St, City P 3229 5484 www.skinmanagement.com.au

The Alcyon difference

“people love coming here, it’s a haven away from everyday life.”

Treat yourself to what you deserve at the blissful Alcyon Hair & Beauty salon. Life is so incredibly fast-paced these days, setting aside even an hour a week for ourselves seems virtually impossible. Alcyon Hair & Beauty is all about giving yourself the time you need to regenerate and basically show appreciation to the hardest working person in your life… you! Deborah Cannizzaro, owner of Alcyon Hair & Beauty, understands women are so often focused on looking after others that our needs regularly fall by the wayside. “I’m trying to make them value the time they put into themselves, value the money they spend, and let them know they will get value for money here,” she says. “We’ve had so many comments about how much people love coming

here, and how they feel it’s a haven away from everyday life.” Alcyon is so much more than a hairdressing salon. When you stop in for a cut and colour, book in for a treatment in the beauty room to really release yourself from the worries outside. For just $160, you can lie back in the warmth and indulge in the HydroPeptide® Signature Antiwrinkle facial – which we think should be renamed to the de-stress, ultimate relaxation facial! For 60 minutes, you are cleansed, exfoliated and

rejuvenated with the invigorating benefits of 61 peptides and proteins. Couple that with a very welcomed head, neck and shoulder massage and you’ll be struggling to stay awake! But don’t take our word for it! Pop into the Wooloowin salon yourself and experience the Alcyon Hair & Beauty difference. Alcyon Hair & Beauty 20 Shaw Rd, Wooloowin P 3861 1020 www.alcyonhair.com.au

move out back Retire to your backyard in style with Lifestyle Pavilions. Lifestyle Pavilions deliver all the flair, finesse and liveability of a prestige designer home but in a versatile 70-80sqm pavilion. Project Designs’ Director, Colin Lewington says the concept was born after speaking with many long-term clients about the future of their soon-tobe-empty family home. “Many didn’t want to be tied to a grand home anymore but they still wanted the surrounds and lifestyle,” he says. “The solution was to have their adult children move into the main home and themselves move to a smaller, more easily contained space.”

LOVE IT!

Each Pavilion has Caesarstone bench tops, bamboo floors and in-built custom cabinetry as standard, plus a select range of fittings including Hansgrohe Tapware and a designer Phillipe Starke basin in every bathroom, an extensive covered Merbau timber deck, open plan living and walls of glass to flood the interior with natural light. highrise on the hill

The north-facing property is designed to ensure each apartment includes spectacular panoramic views of the city skyline.

Big names in Australian architecture team up with celebrity chef, Neil Perry to create Brisbane’s newest luxurious highrise apartments. Situated next to the iconic Torbreck highrise apartments in Highgate Hill, The Highgate – a $70 million project headed by Queensland-based developer Pointcorp - is set to become Brisbane’s hottest new property. The talented combination of award-winning lead architect, Sandra Browne and 2013 International Design Excellence Award interior designer, Blainey North promises each of The Highgate’s 42 apartments and penthouse residence will deliver a modern, high-end living experience. The north-facing property is designed to ensure each apartment includes spectacular panoramic views of the city skyline, and the luxurious apartments will be the first apartment project in Australia to be equipped with kitchens designed

by Australian chef, author and television presenter, Neil Perry. Unlike most apartment complexes, The Highgate’s beautifully landscaped outdoor gardens will be the centerpiece of the property with the building occupying a mere 20% of the site. Described by Browne as ‘a building in a garden’, landscape architect Steve Dunn has designed a lush urban oasis on the 4900sqm site, offering its future residents the perfect, tranquil escape.

The gardens will consist of an upper and a lower ‘secret garden’ comprising a pool, informal terrace, and creek bed with wild planting and a fire pit. Construction is expected to commence in February 2015, with apartments starting from $1.5 million. The Highgate P 1800 255 277 www.thehighgate.com.au

each evening an itinerary is left in your room about the next destination port with some history of the area, what tours are available and what’s happening on the ship that evening. themeD nights like their “white” party are great fun where you can boogie on the pool deck dressed in white.

a cruisey life Ever wondered what it’s like to go on a cruise ship? Helen Rogers sets sail for the French Riviera with Azamara Club Cruises. Az amazing as it sounds, a cruise was never on my bucket list. But with the French Riviera the destination, it was impossible for me not to be ‘on board’. I suppressed my reservations about feeling seasick the entire trip - and got packing. I boarded the Azamara Quest in Barcelona, setting sail for a seven night luxury cruise taking us through the French Riviera to Portofino in Italy and finally to our destination of Monaco. This boutique liner, part of the Royal Caribbean group, is smaller than your average cruise ship, catering to all age groups with a maximum of 686 guests and around 400 crew. It’s mainly geared towards couples, but I took my sister Angela along for some fun. The staterooms on board the Azamara range from luxury suites to standard rooms which are the most popular accommodation; small but adequate with a double bed, couch, small bathroom and a veranda where you can sip a margarita while you watch the sunset (or sunrise?). You also get your 96

own ‘butler’ should you need anything, and the crew are always on hand to help. Because the ship is small it has a homely feel and everyone is in holiday mode so the vibe is relaxed and friendly. The food on board was fantastic, with two top-notch five star restaurants, one à la carte restaurant and the ever popular buffet style dining as well as a café. The sunset bar and pool bar were quite popular with my sister and I, and the best part, you don’t need any cash - everything is free. As far as entertainment goes, we boogied most nights in the Looking Glass nightclub or hung out at the casino, rarely getting to bed before midnight, and totally forgetting we were on a ship. The Azamara group have a motto - “think outside the ship” and they do that by having longer stays in port so you can immerse yourself in the culture of the destination port. We had an overnight stay in Marseilles and in Monaco so you could come and go from the ship at your leisure,

taking in the night life or hanging out with the rich and fabulous in Monte Carlo. One of the Azamara’s drawcards are their ‘Azamazing Evenings’, which are complimentary authentic cultural experiences. Ours was a visit to a French Chateau, where we sipped Champagne and were entranced by an operatic performance by Ms Dominique Mezin. They also arrange inside access to events on shore like cooking and dining experiences or visits to out of the way places you’d never discover yourself. Day trippers are well catered for also with arranged tours you can book on board, or you can just poke around in the ports and enjoy the culture, spectacular European architecture, shopping, markets and dining options. If you want to spend your day on board there are plenty of activities like catching some rays on the pool deck, hitting the gym or having some relaxing time in the Astral Spa. One of the highlights for me was the chance to SEPTEMBER14

Helen with the ‘Captain Jose’ and her sister Angela.

Top Tips for carefree cruising: - leave your stress at home and get into holiday mode as soon as you step on board. - take comfortable clothes and shoes, there’s a lot to explore. - be prepared to put on a couple of kilos, the food is sensational on board (and free). - sit with someone different for breakfast or dinner, it’s a great way to meet people. Monterossa Beach in Cinque Terre.

what to PACK

Beautiful port destinations await, where you can dine while overlooking the Mediterannean. visit Cinque Terre, the five villages built on the rugged Italian coastline and not accessible by car. You can walk between some of the villages (which takes a couple of hours) but the most convenient way is by ferry boat. The villages are virtually untouched by time and all overlook the Mediterannean Sea with spectacular cliffside views. The Azamara Quest cruises to around 60-70 destinations and if you just can’t get enough of cruising you can actually do backto-back cruises with this company. In fact you could cruise for 174 days straight and not see the same port. Some people were on their eighth Azamara cruise and counting. If you don’t fancy the long trip to Europe, the Azamara Quest is coming to Australia stylemagazines.com.au

in early 2016 starting with a 10 night Barrier Reef to Sydney cruise departing Cairns. Other cruises will be available and the new cruise itinerary will be ready in October. The Portuguese captain, Jose Vilarinho, with his witty sense of humour, kept us well entertained the whole cruise. In fact, we’re told some people will only cruise with Captain Jose at the helm. I am now a cruise convert and as the Mediterranean is calm, feeling seasick was not an issue. I met so many awesome people on board and it was an amazing experience. It’s a great way to see the world without having to keep unpacking your suitcase.

Style does Caffe Florian

READ MORE ONLINE

Style travel writer Deb Kolkka visited one of her favourite cafes in Italy – Caffe Florian. The café opened in 1720, making it the oldest continuously operating caffe in Italy. It began as two modestly decorated rooms in Piazza San Marco and has been decorated and enlarged over the centuries. Lord Byron, Goethe and Charles Dickens were frequent visitors, and Casanova liked to take his coffee there (probably because it was the only caffe that allowed women). Deb warns it’s ridiculously expensive to eat and drink at Caffe Florian, but she says it’s a must for anyone heading to Venice. Just think about the history and the surroundings; not the price!
