FROM THE

EDITOR S PAUL JOHNSTON MANAGING EDITOR

Q: What’s something you do every morning? MANAGEMENT

CHRISTIE SUTHERLAND DEPUTY EDITOR

MANAGING EDITOR Paul Johnston Kiss the dog and pat the kids.

FATHERS AND SUBSTANCE... As we launch September, I’ve had the inspiring job of contacting the finalists of our Style & Substance competition…and what a talented, entrepreneurial bunch of people we have in Brisbane! We received applications from over 150 locals looking to kick start their businesses with our $10,000 prize. Check out our finalists on page 15 and cast your votes at stylemagazines.com.au. Also this month, we celebrate one of my favourite days of the year – Father’s Day. Unfortunately my father isn’t with me these days, but I have three children who I love and try to guide through life. My advice to them and all of you comes from Sylvester Stallone in Rocky V: “It ain’t about how hard you hit, it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.” If my kids (or yours) are reading this, I’d like to offer a few suggestions to make Father’s Day special on September 6. If you’re not up for slaving over a hot stove early on a Sunday, then book a table at Harveys on James Street. The spiced minced and a few coffees will earn you some serious brownie points. You can’t go wrong with shoes or shirts LOVING THE DECOR AT (my faves) from ELEVEN ROOFTOP BAR Urbbana or Wil Valor, and to top off the day I know I’d love a trip to Brisbane’s newest it-spot, Eleven Rooftop Bar in the Valley, well worth the small queue.

See you out and about, Paul 8

“ Others sell houses, I sell homes.”

Lucas Patchett & Nicholas Marchesi, founders.

HELPING OUT LOADS Lucas Patchett and Nicholas Marchesi, have found a unique way to help those in need. ORANGE SKY LAUNDRY is a mobile laundry for the homeless and an Australian first. Founded in July 2014 in Brisbane, by Lucas Patchett and Nicholas Marchesi, two 20-yearold best friends. The custom fitted van is decked out with two industrial washers and dryers, and services parks and drop in areas across Brisbane and the wider area. With vans now operating in the Gold Coast and Melbourne, the organisation has the vision that their services will be Australian wide by the end of 2015. The small donation of $6 is enough to cover the cost of a cycle of washing for one person, but that is just the monetary value. It will also restore respect, raise health standards and reduce the strain on resources.

Place agent ALEX RUTHERFORD has completed many of her own renovations as well as a fine arts degree, helping her appreciate all the elements that will attract a buyer to your property. After 15 years of selling property Alex understands the difference between a house and a home.

Lucas Patchett used his engineering studies along with his, ‘why not’ attitude, to kick the idea into action. Having just come back from overseas, with a few weeks to kill before uni, he said to Nick “let’s stop talking about this and just go do it!”. And so they did. Admitting there was a few times the friends thought the idea wouldn’t get much further than the planning stages, it was self-confessed determination from both sides that saw it through. Patchett says, “we live our lives by the golden rule of treating others as we’d want to be treated and living to help other people – everyone deserves clean clothes right?” ORANGE SKY LAUNDRY WWW.ORANGESKYLAUNDRY.COM.AU

HOME BUYING HINTS Confused about your borrowing options? Get some clarity with these CommBank tips.

OUR HOME LENDING SPECIALISTS AND MOBILE BANKERS CAN HELP WITH CUSTOMISED IF ONLY WE were as good at thinking about lending as we were spending. Making a decision on what loan is right for us can be extremely overwhelming. Take the confusion out of home loans with these tips from CommBank. What do you want? Geography, demographics and infrastructure all have an impact on how your property will perform for you, both personally and in terms of rental demand, rental return and longterm capital growth. Work out your budget. Our home loan calculator will give you an idea of what kind of borrowing power you could have, and therefore what price range you’ll be looking in. Customised reports that look at comparable property sales, listings, auction results and rental yields in an area or street in your area are available from any of our Home Lending Specialists or Mobile Bankers. Consider applying conditional preapproval before you go shopping, so you have a good understanding of what you can afford.

PROPERTY REPORTS ON THE AREAS YOU ARE LOOKING AT, INCLUDING INFORMATION SUCH AS RECENT SALES, CURRENT LISTINGS, SUBURB PROFILES AND DEMOGRAPHICS.

Home or investment? Are you buying a place to live, or a place to rent out? Or perhaps a place to rent out now, and live in later? These questions are important in determining what type of property you’ll be buying. Where? If it’s a home you’re after, you’re likely to have an idea about where you might like to live. Our Home Lending Specialists and Mobile Bankers can help with customised property reports on the areas you are looking at, including information such as recent sales, current listings, suburb profiles and demographics. If you’re looking to buy an investment property, consider whether you want to

buy an apartment or a house, and research what kinds of properties attract most rental demand in different areas. Likewise, a renovated family home in an inner-city area populated mostly by students may have limited appeal. With our Property Guide App, you can search real estate listings, locate them on a map, access recent auction and sale results and view suburb profiles. FROM CANVAS TO fabric, Kristian has designed a new line of beautiful kaftans to accompany his gallery work. Created with the help of his friend’s online boutique, Kaftan Sales Online, he will launch six new designs in October. Was art always a big part of growing up? My mother and grandfather are artists and I used to draw from as young as three years old. Creativity is in my family’s DNA. Your designs are quite abstract, what’s the thought process behind each unique creation? I create digital mood boards, with images of patterns, colours and fashion and then come up with my own creations. What materials do you use on the kaftan materials? The designs are painted to scale on canvas with acrylic paint, scanned

and sent overseas, digitally printed on silk, then embellished with Swarovski crystals. What inspires your designs and use of colour? The Queensland lifestyle. I love bold colours, and out there patterns. What’s been your greatest career highlight so far? My first solo exhibition, Bold & Unbridled, at the Mercure Hotel. It was a big risk but the show ended up being a sell out. Also, my art is now hanging in galleries nationally. Who would you like to wear your designs? Women with a great appreciation for art and design and who aren’t afraid to be noticed. Favourite Brisbane breakky place? Double Shot Espresso in New Farm. Their smashed avocado and whipped feta on toast is amazing. WWW.KAFTANSALESONLINE.COM.AU

would be a great networking event for young professionals of Brisbane. What can we expect from Sunset Affair 2015? At each event we try to outdo our last – from entertainment that has never been tried before, to new cocktails and food stations. We pride ourselves on keeping our finger on the pulse to push boundaries and do a lot of overseas research to make each event unique.

“At each event we try to outdo our last - from entertainment that has never been tried before, to new cocktails and food stations.”

Enchanted Beauties Collection Dolce&Gabbana

FEAST YOUR EYES Exclusive Dolce&Gabbana eyewear is coming to OPSM Wintergarden. Only two pairs of these limited edition sunglasses will be visiting Queensland. OVER THE TWENTY years of design, the brand has become as famous as the celebrities who wear it. Each collection oozes glamour, made with high-end craftsmanship and attention to detail. All these elements come together in their latest collections, Absolute Luxury and Enchanted Beauties. To celebrate this exclusive opportunity, the OPSM Boutique will be hosting a Spring Summer VIP event to present Dolce&Gabbana. The Mosaico Collection is a first for eyewear, with the art of micro mosaic applied exclusively 26

for the collection. With romantic red pansies, snow white plumeria, delicate pink gerberas and lilac forget-me-nots, this dedication is in the DNA of the brand. The Enchanted Beauties match this in the style and detail, with Swarovski crystals individually set in frame, to arrange the bouquet of flowers that embellish the framing. More like artwork than eyewear, this exclusive display is for a limited time only. It will be impossible to outshine the stars of this show. Alex’s keys for success are old fashioned hard work, loyalty, and honesty.

IN FIRST PLACE Meet the straight-talking agent who puts her money where her mouth is — Alex Rutherford from Place Estate Agents. IN THE OVER-SATURATED property market, the prospect of finding an agent you can trust can seem like an overwhelming process. Since April 2013, Alex Rutherford has worked with the team at Place Estate Agents, earning herself one of the strongest names when it comes to inner city real estate agents. Alex started her career 15 years ago as a junior agent in Adelaide selling in a blue chip area. Upon moving to Brisbane, Alex became a lead sales agent and manager for a large well-known brand in real estate, before joining the highly awarded team at Place. Alex says her varied knowledge gives her a competitive edge in the market — particularly her background in Fine Arts. “My fine arts degree gives me an eye for detail and visual impact, which allows me to advise my

clients on how to best present their home to secure a premium price outcome for the sale of their property,” says Alex. She says her experience working interstate has allowed her to develop her skills as a licensed auctioneer and agent. “I started selling Adelaide homes mainly in an auction market before moving to Brisbane, where house sales are more negotiation-based,” says Alex. “This has provided me with a broad understanding of two of the most effective sales styles in the country.” Her keys for success are old-fashioned hard work, loyalty and honesty. As a self confessed workaholic, she makes the perfect choice for your next real estate transaction. WWW.EPLACE.COM.AU/ALEX-RUTHERFORD

A SPRING IN YOUR STEP Give Winter the boot with The Great South East’s guide to the best of Spring’s festivals... WITH WINTER ON the way out, we can now look forward to Spring and all it has to offer! Here are just a few events to pencil into your calendar…

CALOUNDRA FRINGE FESTIVAL Sofie Formica experiences a taste of the art, music, cinema, comedy and most importantly food, to be found at the Caloundra Fringe Festival this Spring. These school holidays Caloundra will burst to life from 25 September to 5 October. Festival-goers will be spoilt for choice with 11 days of cultural events and performances. The festival will be headlined by some popular names in the music industry. Angus and Julia Stone, the Hoodoo Gurus and Xavier Rudd will be there to satisfy your musical cravings. The art lovers will be blown away by the best artwork from the region supplied by the Caloundra Regional Art Gallery. Admirers will also get the chance to participate in some interactive art workshops run by local artists Enjoy a dip in the ocean and a snag from the barbie, there is truly something for everyone at this artistic and colourful festival. The festival is expecting to attract visitors from far and wide. A favourite for travelling families, people new to the beachside town must travel along the iconic Caloundra boardwalk. Spanning the entire length of the esplanade, it is a relaxing and scenic way to work off that lunchtime feast.

TOOWOOMBA CARNIVAL OF FLOWERS The iconic Carnival of Flowers is set to brighten up Spring once again. Now in its 66th year, the carnival will run from 18 to 27 September. Every year as the flowers grow so do the crowds. It’s a favourite among locals and a must see for visitors. There will be food, music and flowers but be sure to supply your own anti-histamines for that inevitable hay fever. WWW.TCOF.COM.AU

TAMBORINE MOUNTAIN SCARECROW FESTIVAL Spring festival season wouldn’t be complete without the annual scarecrow festival at Tamborine Mountain from 16 to 18 October. Wander around the sculpture show following the main theme of (you guessed it) scarecrows. Win prizes (and bragging rights) by making your own scarecrow. With colouring, poetry and performance art competitions, there is something for the whole family to get involved with. WWW.TAMBORINEMTNCC.ORG.AU

“THIS SKY HOME WITH STUNNING VIEWS OVER BRISBANE’S CBD, THE RIVER AND KANGAROO POINT CLIFFS CAPTURES THE MATURITY NOW FOUND IN INNER CITY LIVING IN BRISBANE.”

LIVING LARGE IN SMALL SPACES Kitchen and bathroom designer, Kim Duffin is an expert in creating the illusion of space in small apartments. PICTURE THIS: A two bedroom, two bathroom apartment in an inner city high rise that had been built in the 1990s. Built over 20 years ago, the apartment’s original layout and decor was a typical reflection of that time. Positioned on the twelfth floor, the apartment has stunning views of the Brisbane CBD, river and Kangaroo Point cliffs. However, it did not take advantage of these stellar views available and its spaces were restricted by a collection of small rooms - two dining areas, plus a kitchen. The apartment was “opened up” to create better flow between the kitchen, living and dining areas as well as the outdoor living space. “Originally from Melbourne and with his experience gained from extensive business travel abroad, the owner of the apartment decided to transform his home to match the cosmopolitan lifestyle he has enjoyed whilst living in these locations,” says Kim. A focus on functionality was also key, with homes provided for all kitchen appliances, cutlery, glassware and cookware so that it may be easily accessed and rehoused after use. The design was to be executed with a contemporary, minimalist look, using a colour palette of warm, timeless hues throughout the apartment. “This sky home with stunning views over Brisbane’s CBD, the river and Kangaroo Point Cliffs captures the maturity now found in inner city living in Brisbane,” says Kim. stylemagazines.com.au

Kim’s new design opened up the apartment, yet still defines the activities performed in the kitchen, dining and living areas. The new kitchen does not dominate the space as often happens in open plan designs. A typical galley kitchen was selected to best cater for how the space relates to adjoining living space and the rest of the apartment. The result was an aesthetically sleek and timeless living area, which is functional and effectively maximises the space. Are you looking to maximise your apartment’s living and monetary value? For expert advice on your next home renovation, get in touch with Kim Duffin Design.

To breed, raise and train each Guide Dog costs over $35,000 and after two years of intensive training they are then placed with a new handler.

Brittney Deguara discovers how Guide Dogs Queensland are helping turn a new generation of puppies into guide dogs. A DOG IS a man’s best friend, and for those with vision loss, a guide dog is a saviour. Guide Dogs Queensland assists nearly 2,000 blind and visionimpaired people across the state, with services going beyond training the young pups. Guide Dogs Queensland CEO, Barb Tasker says the number of Queenslanders needing assistance from Guide Dogs is increasing. “The vast majority of Queenslanders come to us for counselling, training with a Long Cane, or help with basic orientation and mobility around their home,” Barb says. But it’s not a cheap task. To breed, raise and train each Guide Dog costs over $35,000 and after two years of intensive training they are then placed with a new vision impaired handler.

stylemagazines.com.au

There are around 100 people across Australia waiting to receive a Guide Dog, which are a mix of Labradors and Golden Retrievers, making a smarter breed. In a field like this, money doesn’t come easily, 93 per cent of funding comes from the generosity of communities and corporate sponsors. Despite the lack of government funding, Guide

Dogs Australia has been voted Australia’s most trusted charity three years in a row by Australian Reader’s Digest Most Trusted Poll. There are 28 Australians diagnosed with vision loss every day, and Guide Dogs Queensland is there to help. But they now need your help! You can donate by joining Puppy Club on their website. BEAUTY AND BRAINS Fiona Neale was always a skilled beauty therapist but how she created a cosmetic empire was truly a (brush) stroke of genius. ISSADA WAS A range of revolutionary makeup brushes, used by Hollywood A-listers, when the brand first caught her eye. Fiona left her prestigious position in the Hair and Beauty Department of the Virgin Atlantic Lounge in London and returned to Australia, where she purchased Issada and began the journey. Recognising the industry demand for a range of cosmetics that treated the skin, Fiona worked tirelessly to create just that. Within eight months of launching, over 20 signature salon accounts were opened with Issada concept stores following. From here, the brand continued to grow, with the introduction of a Training School, showrooms, offices and a warehouse. Now the Brisbane-based brand can be found in over 250 stockists around Australia; with so much achieved already this local brand continues to innovate and dominate. ISSADACOSMETICS.COM

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH FIONA How would you describe the journey of Issada? A labour of love. Rewarding, exciting, fulfilling – a dream come true. Issada has been on a journey around the world and back – literally! What has been a standout highlight? There have been a few: The one that sticks out in my mind is the first time someone I didn’t know pulled out an Issada compact and lipstick – squeal! Signing a huge distribution deal with BLC cosmetics, and collaborating with amazing artists and designers like Carla Zampatti and Zimmermann. What is one beauty step everyone should include in their regime? Cleaning your brushes! While it might not seem like a traditional beauty step – it’s one of the best things you can do for your skin, and the finished product of your makeup. Your advice to someone who wants to change up their beauty look? My advice? It’s only makeup! The great thing is – it’s not permanent, so have fun! While knowing what works on you, and having a timeless go-tolook is great, don’t be afraid to play and let your beauty look evolve.

INFLUENCED BY SOUNDTRACKS and video games, Canadian born Ryan Hemsworth is a product of the new generation, and is known for his strong Internet presence and persona. “I definitely rely on the Internet for the position I’m in, which is great, but it’s a bit scary when that’s all people see. I always try and backpedal and say ‘oh well actually I’m going to do the opposite of what you just said.’” And his moody electronic music is headed in a different direction with Ryan’s next album, due to be released later this year; returning to playing guitar and working

with bands more, with a new EP expected for Listen Out live shows. While most DJs and Producers choose to release their music under a moniker, Ryan explains he sent some demo songs to writers and they got posted with his name. “At least it’s my name. Although it’s kind of weird when people say ‘Ryan Hemsworth sucks’. They mean the music, but it’s like ‘ugh he’s still a human being’,” he jokes. A listener first and musician second, Ryan describes his approach to producing and remixing as a fan foremost, which influenced his Secret Songs artist sharing project on Soundcloud. SEPTEMBER15

ON ISLAND TIME Ashton Smith has always been a water baby. Surfer-girl and tanned goddess, she tells us about the swimwear label she has dreamt to life in her home of Stradbroke Island.

GROWING UP ON North Stradbroke Island, with her father a professional surfer and mother a dedicated beach babe, Ashton Smith has lived her life by what the waves are doing. “One of my earliest memories is of my sister and I in matching bikinis and never wanting to take them off, so even back then a bikini was a very important part of my life,” she says. Despite swimwear becoming a saturated market recently, Ashton struggled to find a basic black bikini – and so, Farron Swim was born. With a name that plays on ‘fahrenheit’ (when it’s hot you swim, right?), Ashton

says her designs fill a gap in the market for “basics in prints and styles that transcend trends, in high quality fabrics and cuts that mould and frame the body.” Trawling blogs and sketching for inspiration, Ashton keeps as much of her business on the island as possible, from the design of her pieces, to the website and logos, and shoots her campaigns locally. With a new SS15 collection dropping in October, Ashton says to watch this space for a collection with more grown up silhouettes which build on her aesthetic of basics.

Meet Ashton: the babe behind the bikinis Your off duty style is… Bassike tees, Ksubi denim, Isabel Marant shoes or Havianas. When you’re not working we’ll find you… Surfing as much as possible! Straight or curls? Depends on the day, but my hair usually decides itself. Early mornings or late nights? An early morning walk or surf sets a clear headspace.

STYLE | FASHION SOMETHING THAT WOMEN PROBABLY

A DAY IN THE LIFE Style’s Deputy Editor, and mother to French bulldog, Kettle, Christie Sutherland puts the Porsche Cayenne to the ultimate fashionista test. Morning I WOULD LOVE to say that 6.30am comes around and I wake up feeling fresh, but among the bustling city skyline and a little puppy in my bed, sleep can be a bit restless. This morning however, I had something to look forward to, getting my hands on the keys to a Porsche Cayenne. My mind was instantly revving at the thought of the embossed crests. Getting myself out the door was quicker than usual, plenty of sooking (my pup, not me). Keys in the ignition, but first - coffee. It is an unspoken prerequisite that I have to live within a five minute drive of the hottest

UNDERSTAND, IS THAT THE CONSOLE OF MY CAR IS REALLY MORE OF A JEWELLERY BOX; THE GLOVE BOX, A MAKE UP BAG; THE PASSENGER FLOOR, A SHOE BOX, AND THE BOOT, A WARDROBE ON WHEELS.

1PM 3PM cafés, so sport mode was a dream for the quick zip around; it was an effortless transition. I have never been a fan of street parking but that all changed with the asset of the reversing camera and power steering plus (I could get use to that!). With my phone already ringing (handsfree dream), I got to make use of the spacious front seat and turn it into a makeshift office, going over my to-do list for the day, before meetings and creativity whisk me away (lists keep me sane). Multitasking is a necessity and the Cayenne ticked all the boxes every time. No matter where I am, I’m always scoping out the latest locations and trends, for work of course… I’m always envisaging a shoot in my head, and always need to have my finger on the pulse. I pull a lot of fashion and products for shoots, which is like indulging in ‘shopping’ without the cash. Unfortunately, all items are eventually returned. At the end of the morning the Cayenne really showed off, as the boot space proved large enough to fit it all, with sections to store smaller items safely too. Afternoon Lunch happened on the go, as it usually does, and it should last me through my afternoon of meetings and phone calls. This part of the job is still new territory for me. Having only recently taken on an advertising responsibility with my new role as Deputy Editor, I have had to learn how to balance both sides of the job. While the fashion parts are definitely fun, being able to share my passion for Style Magazines with Brisbane clients is one of the

5PM best and most rewarding things. As the day draws to a close and most people are switching off their computers and calling it a day, the Style office is just going into night mode; we don’t stop. Just like the Cayenne; we keep up with its 0-100km in 5.5 seconds. Our team is 100% dedicated to what we do and always pushing the boundaries. Evening Something that women probably understand and can relate to, is that the console of my car is really more of a jewellery box; the glove box, a make up bag; the passenger floor, a shoe box; and the boot, a wardrobe on wheels. I could quite literally live out of my car and the Cayenne makes that very possible. These are all necessary tricks of the trade as many of us frequently head straight from the office to an event. So if you thought a career in fashion or magazines is a nine to five gig, you are sadly mistaken. We are masters at day to night dressing, and if it were a competition, we would surely win. Once out and about, it is still business mode, but with a more relaxing environment. A few hours of mingling, canapés and photos and it all winds up. Goodnight After a whirlwind day it is nice to get into the comfort of the Cayenne, put the digital radio on and take a second to gaze at the stars through the panoramic sunroof. It is hard to turn off when you’re always on the go, but I make sure to spend as much time at home with Kettle and my partner Luke as possible. As big as the days, or as late as the nights can be – I wouldn’t change a thing, my reality is a dream come true (all I need is the car). SEPTEMBER15

TOM SANCEAU | 36 | RESTAURATEUR

Brisbane restaurant tycoon and owner of Public, Red Hook and London Fields, Tom Sanceau ditches the heat of the kitchen for our quick-fire fashion interview.

“I’VE ALWAYS COLLECTED TRAINERS, I’VE BOUGHT THREE PAIRS THIS WEEK – OOPS”

Describe your style… English dapper gentleman meets the tropics. When did you start becoming aware of fashion? In the 80s – neon socks, faded denim and bad hair… It was a great time! How do you dress for work? My work is quite hands on, I have to be prepared to jump in whenever I’m needed… a blazer with a t-shirt or slacks with a shirt. What do you live in? Hoodie and trainers during the cooler months,

and the bare minimal in summer! What can we catch you lounging in? Animal fur, diamonds and Ugg boots… Fashion trends would you ban? Socks under sandals pulled up to the knee. Whose celebrity style do you admire? Pharrell, Kanye, Beckham and Tom Ford. Most indulgent fashion purchase? I’ve always collected trainers and just got back into it in a big way… I’ve bought three pairs

this week… oops! Best budget buy? Topshop for basics, Scotch & Soda have amazing sample sales too. What would I wear on a date? Something that I feel comfortable in and says something about me. Where can we find you on… A Saturday night? London Fields. Sunday morning? Swimming or surfing. Your next holiday? Heli-boarding in New Zealand.

FASHION FEVER Head honcho of Wil Valor, Mark Ferguson, tell us why the change of season is putting a spring in his step… WE BRISBANE-ITES AREN’T exactly built for the cooler months. So, this is why Spring is my favourite time of year. The flowers are blooming, there is not a cloud in the sky and the temperature in Brisbane is perfect for the spring fashion that was shown at Mercedes Benz Fashion Festival (MBFF). This year, MBFF celebrated it’s 10th anniversary – a decade of bringing cutting-edge creativity and jawdropping designs to our city. Lindsay Bennett and his team have done an amazing job to fund, grow and continue an event of this calibre. My personal experience with MBFF in 2012 and 2013 were fantastic. I met so many great people at these shows and continue to have many great friendships, which all started from this fashion event. 50

Some labels look at the festival as an opportunity to increase sales, while others, including my own label, look at the collection of media, fashionistas, business people and socialites as an amazing branding opportunity. It presents endless opportunities for your business, and it gives a designer a chance to put (commercial) common sense aside to truly be artistic, and push the boundaries of their creative flair. So if you are in the fashion industry and looking to kick-start your career, or if you’re looking to take your business or label to the next level, I would recommend getting amongst the fashion pack at next year’s MBFF. DRAW IN THE MOMENT Christie Sutherland chats to Sally Spratt on her latest collaboration with Wintergarden and all things Lust List worthy. ON THE COLLAB What has been the best part of Wintergarden/ The Lust List Collaboration? Illustrating such beautiful product and getting excited about all the new Spring/Summer arrivals. Where did your inspiration stem from for this collaboration? I think of shopping as a form of escapism. I love that it can indulge the senses in a completely visual and tactile experience. I wanted to make these images lust worthy and dreamy. How has this collab influenced you and your inspirations? This collaboration has opened my eyes to a few designers I wasn’t familiar with and showed me how many items I need to add to my own Lust List If you could choose a favourite illustration from the collab which one would it be? It would have to be Seed. I love the neutral colours and the soft feminine lines to their products. ON THE LUST LIST How did the idea for The Lust List come about? I launched The Lust List in October 2013. It started with me trying different illustration styles and sketching different luxe brands and products that I was lusting after while in-between freelance design jobs. My first couple of posts instantly generated a huge response on Instagram and Tumblr, and I was having so much fun creating each of the illustrations that I decided to keep going.

Where do you find inspiration for items to include in the list? I buy Vogue, Elle and Harpers the moment they come out. I trawl the Internet daily and am easily drawn into my favourite blog’s, and social media. One thing people probably assume about you, but isn’t true? I think people assume that I live a life of luxury, ease and pleasure. There are definitely perks to this job, but it’s surrounded by long hours, hustle, hard work and seven days a week at my desk! You get a phone call, and it’s a designer asking you to draw their latest collection: who would you want on the other end of the phone? Oliver Rousteing from Balmain. The collections are stunningly intricate and detailed I’d love to draw the collection. Magazines or Instagram? Both! Instagram feeds me new sources of inspiration every couple of minutes and Magazines allow me to read and enjoy the visuals in a tactile way.

I follow the ‘if I can’t have them, I’ll draw them’ mantra. 52

TIMELESS JEWELS From unique treasures to repairs and customised pieces, South Family Jewellers offer a complete experience at their boutique. DO YOU HAVE a family heirloom sitting in your jewellery box, gathering dust? If it’s too big, or a little damaged, or has simply seen better days, it can probably be made wearable with a few simple tweaks. South Family Jewellers is owned by Stuart Paterson and his wife Alison – with Stuart handling finances and Alison managing the store. Alison says her philosophy is customer-based, and takes great pride in the product – right down to the finer details. “I put a lot of thought into creating innovative and eye-catching window displays,” Alison says. “Over the years we have tried to focus on keeping the store as simple as possible,

and staying true to the fundamentals for our customers.” Specialising in customised antique pieces, the store hosts a fully equipped manufacturing jeweller’s workshop. Alison explains that she has seen many beautiful pieces passed down through generations. “A story that particularly resonates with me was when an ill grandfather knew his time was limited, he gifted his rings to his six grandchildren, and his son came to us looking for a solution,” Alison says. “We set to work, creating six individual rings to replicate the grandfather’s, with the son gifted the original. They accepted with a heavy, but grateful heart, knowing their grandfather’s legacy would live

Leteisha, Sherril and Charlotte.

LOCAL ASHGROVE BEAUTY Salon The Brow & Skin Studio is celebrating 10 years of styling and sculpting brows, correcting and maintaining healthy skin in Brisbane. It was her passion for perfect brows and glowing skin that drove owner Sherril Dalitz to open her own salon in 2005. “I wanted to create a studio that focused on these two very important features – skin and brows,” Sherril says. “At the time, eyebrows were becoming a life force of their own, and at long last, perfection was the order of the day and we quickly became the go-to salon.” The Brow & Skin Studio uses the beauty industry’s most advanced products, all tried and tested by Sherril herself. “Before we showcase any new products, they are trialled extensively by staff and myself to ensure great results,” Sherril says. “How can we be passionate without getting ‘the wow factor’ result ourselves?” Since its opening, The Brow & Skin Studio have always housed internationally-acclaimed products and have offered the most advanced treatments.

Among these is Omnilux and Healite ll Light Therapy, which are renowned treatments originally developed for non melanoma skin lesions. “They are used around the world in more than 50 countries and loved by celebrities, and yes, ‘mere mortals’ love it too. Light Therapy is every girls best friend.” Sherril says. Sherril is committed to delivering exceptional service and up-to-date premium products, such as the prestigious Dr Moy skin range, which they introduced in 2013. To complete our skin solutions The Brow & Skin Studio also house Medik8 and Priori. “My aim has always been to educate clients, to give you up to the minute information and an understanding of what makes a product great, and will deliver outstanding results for you.” Sherril said. “So with my beautiful girls Charlotte and Leteisha, here’s to the next ten years, please allow us to continue looking after you and maintaining the results you have come to expect from The Brow & Skin Studio.” THE BROW & SKIN STUDIO 469 WATERWORKS RD, ASHGROVE P 3366 0002 WWW.BROWANDSKINSTUDIO.COM.AU

GREEK ISLAND HOPPING

WITH THE SPRING Carnival racing season fast approaching, it’s time to think about the vibe you want to imbue at your upcoming Cup Day event. This year, a fresh twist on an iconic theme brings The Styled Group’s Touch of Nautical trackside event to life. Within the grand marquee, nautical-esque features and navy pinstripe elements will work together to create the vision, with a pop of bright fuchsia in place of traditional red for a twist that is fun, fresh and flamboyant. Macro elements will include oars, rigging, plenty of timber detail and life buoys dotted here and there to really bring the theme to life, all the while nurturing the alfresco feel of the day. The race that stops the nation is certainly time for your venue to shine with guests en masse all celebrating in style. Make the most of this lead-up time and ensure your event preparations include style consideration. Just as fabulous head wear or a killer pair of heels completes an outfit, so too does immaculate styling bring the perfect finishing touch to a Cup-worthy venue.

THE FOOD WE eat affects our lives in every way. Eating in a healthy manner will make us live longer, look better and have more energy, while eating in an unhealthy manner will do the opposite. A proper diet is beneficial for the health of our skin and helping us stay healthy. Research shows antioxidant-rich foods seem to protect the skin from various hazards. Skin-friendly foods include carrots, tomatoes, blueberries, beans, salmon, nuts and leafy greens. Much research is still to come, as it is important to determine how and why some foods seem to have protective effects on our skin. Food with a negative effect on our skin include processed foods and unhealthy fats. The damage done to our skin by these foods will make it more sensitive and promote ageing. Generally, skin-friendly foods are the same foods that promote general health. As such, it is best to focus on having a healthy diet and exercising regularly in order to keep skin health, rather than to focus on specific foods to do so.

Various ferry operators service all the main tourist islands like Mykonos to the smaller hidden gems like Naxos or Paros. There are over 70 ferry port destinations to visit. Accommodation varies from two star hostels to five star properties, depending on the island and your budget. We know all the best hotels and the best value properties — try the Scirocco in Santorini. Perched on the ridge, at the top of the donkey trail, it overlooks the magnificent blue waters of the Aegean Sea and the volcanic caldera. If a ‘must do’ adventure is your style, then a private or charter yacht is the ‘hip’ way to go. Unpack once and enjoy the many secret coves and beaches that can be yours, and yours alone. For a bit more style, an eight day cruise aboard a luxury small ship, with just 50 – 60 guests is one of those things you do because you can (think Liam Neeson or Steven Spielberg). Just think what your friends will say!

‘MARKET-WORN’ PROPERTIES

OVERINDULGING YOUR CAREER?

BRISBANE’S BEST SUBURBS

LISTING A PROPERTY for sale can be daunting. While the initial 30 days on market typically produces the best result, some properties can take a little longer. The average days on market for Brisbane is around 60 days, and is much higher in some suburbs. There is a correlation between the time on market and the ultimate sale price. Buyers can perceive a ‘lagging’ listing with some trepidation, and over time this will affect the value of your property. If your property isn’t selling, here are some actions you can take: Re-evaluate your pricing strategy. Sometimes a tweak to the listing price can be all it takes to attract the right buyers to your property. Invest in productive marketing to ensure your property has maximum exposure. Your perfect buyer may not have seen your property for sale. Replace or repair items needing attention. Listen to your agent’s feedback about any particular areas that may deter buyers from falling in love with your home. Refresh your interior styling to create an environment that buyers can imagine living in.

BEING AMBITIOUS IN your career seems like the marking of great success. However, there is a dark side to this drive. I see clients who are exhausted and hating their once-cherished careers, and I have wondered if this is because they are overindulging in their careers. Your career can be likened to a sweet treat. If you are passionate, you find the experience of your career like a sugary hit – the excitement of landing a deal, or the thrill of being noticed for your talents. So, you go for more. But, feasting at the dessert buffet can result in you neglecting other healthy choices. When you are in this cycle you can move into the career drop off; so how do you avoid this? Balance: your career is one aspect of your life. Take time to consider family, friends, hobbies, sports and relaxation as being just as important. Review: take stock of your career and check that you are not just on the rat wheel. Seek Support: talk to a career coach to get perspective and support.

IT’S THE TOPIC that lifestyle TV shows love – where to buy in Brisbane, which suburbs will be the next to boom? This topic always rates highly because people are always keen to know what the hottest suburbs to buy in are. But I can let you in on a little secret, there is a way to work out which suburbs will perform better, offer stronger capital growth and higher long term returns, and the good news is, anyone can do it with just a little research. Here are the things to look for: 1. Close to strong employment centres, education and hospitals, existing and expanding infrastructure, various lifestyle amenities and strong transport hubs with close access to the CBD. 2. More established areas with high numbers of owner occupiers and high income demographics. 3. Buy in an area that has a limited supply of new and high end future development sites. By being an astute purchaser, you stand a far greater chance of achieving high returns.

DESIGN IS NOT A LUXURY

THE OUTDOOR ROOM

NEEDLES: OUCH OR OK?

NO MATTER WHAT space you are looking to improve, understanding your needs will help you design in a way to enhance your day-to-day life. The phrase “form follows function” very much rings true. Before you go searching for the right colour grey to match the floor tile you have fallen in love with, ask yourself a few questions to help determine the objectives of the space. What activities would you like to perform in the space? How does the space relate to other adjoining areas? Does the orientation or aspect affect how you use the space? With these important questions, you will be more able to design a space to meet your needs now. Once the planning is completed, you can move your focus to colours, textures and materials to enhance the look and feel while allowing you to personalise the space. Expensive finishes, fixtures or appliances will never hide a space that has been poorly designed. Spend time investing in a professional to help you understand your needs before being distracted by something shiny!

A FUNCTIONAL OUTDOOR space is a “must have” when living in Queensland. Our desire to spend time outside has led to this space developing into an increasingly luxurious area. Having a rickety table with a stand-alone barbecue is no longer sufficient. The current outdoor room is a space where we sit with friends, watch the football, share a drink around the fire, cook dinner and generally relax. It is totally functional and comfortable all year round. The outdoor room includes an outdoor kitchen with built in barbecue, a sink and an under counter fridge, perhaps a pizza oven or a charcoal cooker. For chilly nights, an outdoor wood or gas fireplace, or perhaps discreet ceiling mounted electric heating allows all year round enjoyment. Wall art and outdoor rugs make the room more homely, while an ethanol fire completes the relaxing vibe in the evening. Aussie BBQs & Fireplaces has a great range of products and ideas to bring your new outdoor room to life.

WE ARE OFTEN asked “how much do the needles hurt?” And, because each person has a different pain threshold, it is difficult to give a precise answer, but here are some points that might help expectations: The needles used in sclerotherapy are very fine. They are a slightly larger gauge than acupuncture needles but much smaller than vaccination needles. Pain might arise from tissue expansion. If the needle tip is not accurately placed inside the lumen of the vein then the injected sclerosant, rather than running through the vein, spills outside the vein and causes the tissue to expand. This will cause pain in the same way as a “boil” does. Small amounts of spillage will always occur, but skilled sclerotherapists pay meticulous attention to this aspect of treatment. Some areas tend to be more sensitive than other areas such as behind the knee and around the ankle. Here I always use the finest needles possible when injecting in these areas and selecting sclerosants least likely to cause pain.

Stones Corner SPOTLIGHT FROM FASHION MECCA TO FOODIE HUB, STONES CORNER IS MAKING A NAME FOR ITSELF AS ONE OF THE TRENDIEST SPOTS IN BRISBANE. STONES CORNER, ONE of Brisbane's most iconic precincts, used to be a shopping mecca before the arrival of DFO. Over the past few years it has seen a huge revival as a hip and happening foodie destination. A number of trendy cafes and restaurants have opened up in the suburb and have made it a home to craft beer, thanks to the annual Stones Corner Festival, organised

by Stones Corner Hotel every May. The entire precinct was named after the original owner of the hotel, James Stone. Stones Corner is set to do a full circle thanks to the re-establishment of the local business association ‘Our Stones Corner’. The area’s unique identity, as a professional and foodie hub, is in stark contrast to residential Greenslopes, which it now comes under.

FOOD+DRINK RULE BRITTANIA Hannah Doody unearths a little slice of Britain in Brisbane’s West End; London Fields. TUCKED AWAY IN the off-the-beaten-track location of West End’s Montague Road, London Fields may seem to be positioned in a less than bustling spot, but it’s the first of what is set to be many developments to pop up in this residential area over the next few years. Inspired by the classic British public houses of yesteryear, crossed with London’s ultra-trendy modern bar scene, the venue represents the quintessential gastro-pub – and it’s everything you’d expect, and more. Stepping inside, the décor is both rustic and inviting, with lofty ceilings and raw material accents – wood panels and brass taps adorn the bar. This gastro-pub captures the best of both countries, as the overall atmosphere also emulates the relaxed, unassuming vibe you’ll only find in Queensland. The menu presents traditional English pub grub, with a twist. We start with small plates of oysters with shallots and sherry vinegar, clams and smoked kingfish with mustard leaf and pickled onions. The seafood is fresh, the taste of the oysters burst in the mouth and the broth accompanying the clams is so rich and flavoursome that we mop up every last bit with the fresh bread roll. 64

Meats and sides come separately on the menu, allowing diners to mix and match as they please. The juicy scotch fillet was cooked to perfection, and matched immaculately with the Syrah Cabernet from Lebanon. The flavours of the roasted leek with goat’s curd and walnut complemented each other flawlessly, while the asparagus with watercress was fresh and crisp. Dessert, however, surpassed our expectations when we thought it wasn’t possible. The Eton Mess with rhubarb is a sort of deconstructed, modern take on this classic British dessert. But, the standout is the roasted banana with rosemary honey and hazelnuts – the chocolate ganache is rich without being overpowering – and leaves us scraping every last bit off the plate. The warm ambience, the comforting yet exciting food and the attentive staff at London Fields work together to create an all-round next level dining experience you won’t want to miss out on. A TASTE OF NEW ORLEANS Take your tastebuds on a trip to the heart of New Orleans at NOLA Portside. TIRED OF BYO Thai? Bored of the run-of-the-mill? If your tastebuds have been yearning for something new, it might be time you paid a visit to NOLA Portside. The new addition to Portside Wharf, NOLA is serving up traditional Creole comfort food that you won’t find anywhere else in Brisbane. Owner of NOLA Portside, Miles Gillham says the cuisine is unapologetically authentic and caters for adventurous eaters wanting to try something new. “If you’re looking for authentic, interesting Creole flavours, drop in and save yourself the plane ticket to New Orleans,” says Miles. NOLA Portside serve dishes which hold historical connections with the time and place they were originally made. VIBRANT ASIAN EATS Perched on the fringe of Brisbane’s city, Hannah Doody discovers the cool urban vibe and exciting flavours on offer at Nest Restaurant and Bar. AS THE LIFT doors open, I am hit with the scent of fresh, aromatic spices. The great news is, the food at Nest Restaurant and Bar smells just as good as this trendy venue looks – the luxurious cocktail lounge is lit with twinkling bird cages overhead, and flows out into an open dining area and ultra-urban street facing bar. Nest’s hybrid menu showcases traditional Asian flavours – Chinese, Malay, Indonesian and Vietnamese – with a modern Australian twist. Their new lunch menu features the best of these cuisines, all served with an Asian street-food vibe. Upon perusing the menu, I’m torn between the delicious looking burgers (think Wagyu beef with

Swiss and vintage cheddar, bacon, smokey BBQ sauce, onion rings and tomato relish), and the more traditional Asian dishes which sound equally as enticing. I try the authentic and flavoursome Pad Thai and the Green Curry with chicken; the sauce is both creamy and spicy, and the vegetables are garden-fresh and crunchy. But, the standout is the Nasi Goreng – the combination of the prawns and market greens, topped with a perfectly fried egg,

coriander and chilli was too delicious not to polish off completely. So whether you’re looking for something exciting and fast during their lunch break or for those seeking a more intimate dinner in a unique location, Nest is the inner-city haven for meals that are fresh, healthy and full of amazing flavours. WATT’S THE BUZZ New Farm’s WATT Restaurant has reopened its doors, unveiling a sleek new look and a tantalising new menu. WHETHER YOU’RE AFTER a picture-perfect spot to watch the sunset, or the sounds of lapping water as you dine, WATT Restaurant is a Brisbane favourite for waterfront dining. But the WATT Restaurant we know and love has transformed to showcase a new and improved look – a stylish new fit out, a fresh team on board and interesting new menu items. The polished concrete floors, intricate tile details, soft furnishings and both indoor and outdoor seating provide the perfect atmosphere for any event from after work drinks, to private functions or casual dining. An all-new Sunday session launches in September, with live music followed by DJs each Sunday afternoon, with a retractable roof to cater for rain or shine. stylemagazines.com.au

Head Chef, Michael Harris, designed the new menu as part of their new food concept, New Farmer’s Kitchen, which is all about bringing fresh produce to plates, in the form of intelligent and approachable dishes. The menu will showcase an array of flavours, from seafood chowder and Cone Bay barramundi, to Caboolture roasted beetroot salad and Kingaroy pork cutlet from the farm. But, if you’re after something a little lighter,

WATT’s bar menu offers finger-licking snacks which are perfect for grazing during afternoon drinks. Among these are chilli popcorn, mini hot dogs, and soft shell fish tacos. So whether it’s post-work drinks, a pre-theatre catch-up or a lazy Sunday afternoon, WATT is the dynamic venue worth checking out this season. SOCIAL MEDIA WEDDINGS VS UNPLUGGED Tune in? Or switch off? Brittney Deguara debunks the pros and cons of incorporating social media on your big day. PLANNING A WEDDING can be stressful, but add the new age issue of social media into the equation and it can become a nightmare. Research has shown that 27 is the average age that women are getting engaged these days and it’s fair to say that social media plays an important role in the lives of these young, technology savvy brides. However, is your big day the moment where you to tell everyone ‘no more tweeting?’ Increasingly more couples are choosing to ask their guests to leave their phones and cameras at home in favour of an ‘unplugged’ wedding. However, before you make your decision, here are the options:

72

THE SOCIAL MEDIA WEDDING

THE UNPLUGGED WEDDING

Give guests the power to play photographer with these tips: • Provide Wi-Fi for guests. • Create a unique, unused hashtag to ensure your photos are archived together. • Select a “Tweeter of Honour” to be in charge of updating social media on your behalf. The downside is that multiple posts from guests could steal your social media thunder, and if you’d rather guests view the wedding with their full attention and not through their screen, it may not be the option for you.

If you decide to flick the switch, remember to let your guests know in advance with these tips: • Think of a creative way to enforce the ban, like a brief announcement by the best man or officiate. • Thank guests for respecting your wishes by sending a photo with a personal message. However, some guests will disobey your suggestion or the professional photographer might not capture all of the special moments of the day. In the end, it is your decision and whichever way you lean, it should be a day filled with laughter, fun and wine. And remember, the bride is always right.

DRESS CODE ALERT: WEDDING TIME Receiving a wedding invitation is always exciting, and it is always important to note when and where. But some equally important ‘W’ words that require attention is What to Wear. witchery.com.au

WE UNDERSTAND THAT wedding dress codes vary depending on the couple and between black tie, white tie, casual, dressy, formal, semi-formal… wearing the right thing can be hard. Make sure you keep the venue in mind when dressing too as a picnic wedding is very different to a beach or church wedding and you need to think practically. There is no excuse for any faux pas! If you’ve ever attended a ceremony and wondered, ‘what was she thinking’, or maybe you look back and ask yourself the same thing (no judgement we promise), then tag this page for

future reference and ensure you are always a perfectly dressed guest. Here are some dress codes to help you out: • Stick to the golden rule, just avoid wearing white (do we really have to say no veils?)! • If you want to wear black, keep it light; not like you’re mourning. • Modest is also best. Open backs, plunging necklines and shorter hemlines just make everyone uncomfortable. • Being overdressed than under dressed is a safer bet. • No matter what you wear, don’t upstage the bride.

HEADWAY ON HEADACHES Suffer from long-term headaches or migraines? A recent medical breakthrough could be your answer to living pain-free. IF YOU SUFFER from migraines, you are one of the two million people in Australia with this condition. Taking medication for headaches or migraines can sometimes only provide shortterm pain relief, but a medical breakthrough has discovered a common cause in those suffering with headaches and migraines – and could mean more effective long-term treatment is available. Director of Brisbane Headache and Migraine Clinic, Bertrand Doeuk says the latest research has found a common link between those suffering from all forms of headaches and migraines. “A common link has been found whereby

sufferers all posses a sensitised brainstem.” Bertrand says. “We can now precisely treat the cause of the problem, rather than treating symptoms alone.” Bertrand explains these symptoms can be crippling and debilitating. He says over the years, he has encountered clients who have suffered with such severe headaches or migraines that they have endured marital breakdowns and have been unable to hold down jobs. He says that currently, headache and migraine sufferers are often either prescribed medication or are advised to undergo treatment such as Botox

injections, massage or manipulations of the spine, which only provide short-term relief. “New treatment has been devised in order to de-sensitise the brainstem,” Bertrand says. “This is exciting news as this new approach gives hope for sufferers to live a life free from headaches and migraines, without the need of invasive surgery or ongoing medication.” For more information on this treatment, contact Bertrand at the clinic. THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Here’s the rub – power brows are in!

Brooke Jesberg

THEY’RE THE BEAUTY trend of the decade: power brows. Cara Delevingne - we blame you for starting this with your magnificent brows! But if you aren’t naturally blessed with brows like Cara’s, how do you achieve this sexy and powerful look? With great shaping and brow powder, the look is easy to achieve for most. But, the powder rubs off!! The other day I was talking to a friend who has nailed the power brow look with shaping and powder and she was telling me about the gorgeous resort holiday she was about to go on with her boyfriend. She also told me she wouldn’t be able to swim in the ocean or in the pool because her brows would wash off! Fortunately, I was able to help her with that – by feather tattooing her eyebrows. So now she can

FEATHER TATTOOING OF EYEBROWS CAN BE USED TO CREATE ‘POWER BROWS’, TO EVEN OUT BROWS OR TO CREATE A SUBTLE DIFFERENCE TO NATURALLY DEFINE YOUR FACE.

rock this strong, sexy look – without her brows rubbing or washing off. Feather tattooing is perfect for people of all skin and hair colour. You don’t have to go for power brows – you can use feather tattooing to achieve a very subtle and natural look, adding definition to your face, or to fill in gaps in your brows. Brow tattooing is different to tattoos on the body as it uses a pen with angled needles, mimicking

the look of real hair. We use all natural ink made from plants. It will eventually fade over time, but usually lasts for 12-24 months. Rubba dub dub – great brows in the tub! Brookie xo BROOKLYN BEAUTY BAR 5/15 JAMES ST, THE VALLEY P 0421 202 447 WWW.BROOKLYNBEAUTYBAR.COM.AU

THE NEW BLONDE

THINKING ABOUT GOING BLONDE? LEANNE SHARES HER TOP TIPS...

Colourist Leanne Butterworth shares her expertise on going lighter and brighter for summer. LIFE IS TOO short for boring hair. With summer around the corner, it’s the perfect time to ditch the dull winter locks. But, a big change requires a lot of trust in your colourist, and owner and technical director of Butterworth & Co, Leanne Butterworth, knows her clients can trust in her knowledge. As a colourist for over 20 years, Leanne has firmly established a reputation for pioneering the best blondes in Brisbane. Believing the ultimate success in achieving the desired hair colour is the consultation, Leanne asks questions to ensure the client receives the outcome they want.

Leanne says to look out for natural tones this summer. “In 2015, blonde has changed – the new blonde is dimensional, natural, wearable,” Leanne says. “Highlights and lowlights define a look worn famously by Sarah Jessica Parker, Nicole Richie and Gisele.” Book an appointment at Butterworth & Co to receive expert advice on going blonde.

What do I need to consider to go blonde? How your hair will handle it and how often you will have to maintain it. I’m already a blonde but I want a change for summer. What do you recommend? Layer differing shades of blonde to suit your skin and eye colour. My hair is quite dark… Can I still go blonde? Sometimes you can, but in most cases I strongly recommend progressively over two or three appointments. I factor in the client’s chemical history and the texture and quality of their hair. How do I keep my blonde at its best? Treatments replenish lost moisture and strengthen each strand. Keratin treatments are best and last up to five months. FEMUR ARCHES ARE A GREAT FOAM ROLLER EXERCISE TO KICK START YOUR POST BABY BODY.

THE BABY WEIGHT IS OVER! Susan Cottrell of The Body Refinery shares four simple exercises to get your post-baby body on track for summer. LOSING THAT EXCESS baby weight can be a pain, but The Body Refinery have four simple foam roller exercises to kick start your post baby body. Susan Cottrell, physiotherapist and owner of The Body Refinery, demonstrates these easy moves. All you need is a foam roller, a mat and a patch of floor. 1. Rolling out thoracic spine: Lie over the roller perpendicular to the mat, bend the knees and gently press down to move the roller along the spine. 78

2. Arm arch: Lie on top of the roller with your head at one end. When exhaling lift arms to ceiling and over head, inhale and return arms to the side. Repeat 10 times. 3. Bent knee fall out: Lie on top of the roller with your head at one end and bent knees. Exhale and let one knee fall to the side keeping the pelvis steady and heavy. Inhale and return to centre to repeat on the other side. Repeat 10 times. 4. Femur arches: Lie on top of the roller with your head at one end with bent knees and arms by

your side. Inhale and float leg to table top position, exhale and return it to start position while keeping pelvis stable. Repeat 10 times on each leg. The Body Refinery has a range of programs from physiotherapy and Pilates to massage and Power Plate. For more information on their classes and services offered, visit their website. SPOT THE FAD DIET Wesley LifeShape Clinic explains why you may want to do some research before jumping on the latest diet bandwagon.

DIETS THAT ARE IMPLEMENTED ON A SHORT-TERM BASIS

DUE TO OUR on-demand lifestyles, it is common to want a ‘quick fix’ when it comes to weight loss. Fad diets might seem like a good idea, as we all crave instant gratification – but while 85 per cent of people can lose weight through dieting, only a small 15 per cent of people keep that weight off. On top of that, fad diets are notorious for nutrient deficiencies, dehydration, constipation, headaches, fatigue and other health concerns. Diets that are implemented on a short-term basis also set the scene for long-term poor eating and physical activity behaviours for the rest of your life. So what’s the alternative? A balanced eating plan that is tailored to your lifestyle and energy needs. A plan that works with your busy schedule and individual tastes. Healthy long term eating

SET THE SCENE FOR POOR LONG-TERM EATING.

combined with regular physical activity will give you a lifetime of better health – and ensure your weight loss is sustainable – not seasonal! To avoid adopting a weight loss plan that could be harmful to your health, the team of qualified health professionals at the Wesley LifeShape Clinic have identified the red flags to avoid when it comes to fad diet trends: • Excluding essential food groups or nutrients, for example, carbohydrates • Using ‘magic’ food or diet pills

as a key selling point • Promising a quick fix or rapid results • Making claims based on a single study or one person’s experience • Requiring you to skip meals • Unsustainable e.g. juice only diet • Does not include a long-term maintenance plan. WITH 15-YEARS EXPERIENCE in the fitness industry, Chris Williams is the owner of both Paddington Personal Training and My Wellness Fix. Hosting a range of preprepared meals including breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks, My Wellness Fix designs its offerings in line with the Alkaline Theory and 80/20 rule. Chris was motivated to create My Wellness Fix when he saw many clients struggling to eat correctly and the lack of healthy pre-p repared meals available. “I wasn’t happy with the quality the businesses were putting out there, so I decided to start my own,” said Chris. The meals are created made-to-order using fresh, organic ingredients ethically sourced from local farms in Queensland and Northern New South Wales. For those with

active lifestyles, they also carry a range of supplements. Mr. Williams’ latest fitness focused venture is the My Wellness Summit taking place on October 10, upstairs at Iceworks, Paddington. 4 OF THE BEST: BROW BUYS

WHAT IS GYROTONIC?

ME, MYSELF AND I

THERE ARE SO many types of products to groom and dress your brows, so here is my short and quick description of my main four: 1. Brow Gel. Keeps unruly hairs tame and tucked away. Great to use after applying other products, and seals it all in place. 2. Powders and Pencils. They fill in the gaps, add fullness and can leave your brows looking soft or dramatic. A combination of the two is wonderful. 3. Crayons and Waxes. These have amazing staying power, while adding colour, texture and definition. They are longer wearing than the others, adhering to the skin very nicely. 4. Super Wear Brow Definer. This is the holy grail of brow products. Like a brow pen, this product can be worn under or over other products, and can be used to give a similar effect, like a stain on the skin. You can mimic hair-like strokes to get that perfect, defined look. The Brow Bar’s range of brow products is definitely one to explore. Our experts can help find the best one for you.

FINDING THE RIGHT exercise routine for you and your body can be hard. Gyrotonic is a new method, which allows you to perform dynamic and multi-directional movements in a supportive environment monitored by professionals. Combining Yoga, Tai Chi and dance, this exercise method involves spiralling, circular movements choreographed into rhythmic sequences. The smooth flow of movements is gentle on joints, providing the body with a natural range of motion to avoid muscle strain and jarring. The equipment supplied in class ensures freedom of movement as it adjusts specifically to its user. Unlike most exercise systems, which involve energy compressing movements causing stagnation, Gyrotonic’s circular movements were designed to be recycled. The movements create a fluid flow of motions and energy aiding the body and safely strengthening all systems. The Body Refinery offers five one hour Gyrotonic classes a week. Visit our website for more information.

AS SOCIAL ANIMALS, humans make efforts to connect with family, friends, a partner, and colleagues. These warm, respectful, reciprocal, trusting relationships add meaning to our lives. Sometimes, a person may find it difficult to genuinely connect with others, or struggle if they are controlling, arrogant, self-absorbed, entitled, and exploitative. Someone preoccupied with personal power, pleasure and vanity, invariably damages themselves and others. A positive self-identity to counteract occasional feelings of insecurity is normal and helpful, but extreme grandiosity is unhealthy. Those who behave in ways that reflect entitlement or believe they are superior to others rarely seek therapy, but if they want to change they can benefit from: • Examining early family and life experiences. • Developing empathic responding. • Confronting any perfectionism. • Maintaining relationships without conditions. • Challenging unhelpful thoughts. • Practising mindfulness. • Clarifying and focusing on their values.

STRENGTHEN YOUR CORE

DE-CODING KILLER CRAMPS

CORE STRENGTH – it’s a term that gets thrown around a lot these days, but what does it actually mean? It refers to the abdominal wall, the pelvis, the lower back and diaphragm and its ability to stabilise the body during movement. Whether you are bending, sitting, lifting, twisting, carrying, reaching overhead or even vacuuming, mopping and dusting, these are acts that spring from, or pass through, the core. Hot Yoga and Pilates is an ideal workout for core strength. The detoxification from the FAR Infared heated studio enables the body to be more flexible and removes toxins seven times better than a regular hot yoga studio. Even for mums with weak core strength after childbearing often see results after one session. Positive effects from increased core strength include better sleep at night and a more positive outlook due to better energy. Improved posture can increase confidence by creating a younger and slimmer appearance. Enquire at Zen Hot Yoga and Pilates today to see how we can improve your core strength.

ARE YOU A mother of a bride-to-be? We all need a little extra loving when we are prepping for the big day! Ultherapy is a non-surgical and safe procedure which can be used to improve lines and wrinkles as well as to perform brow, neck and chin lifts – leaving skin at its photo-ready best. Ultherapy uses ultrasound technology to deposit focused energy simulating the body’s natural production of collagen and elastin in the deep tissue layers. Over time, this process will enable skin to firm, lift and tighten. As no scalpels, needles or toxins are involved in the procedure, there is no disruption to the skin and no downtime is required. According to RealSelf, the world’s largest personal review website for cosmetic treatments, Ultherapy is rated higher than other skin tightening modalities. The results last about 12 months following treatment. Follow-up treatments assist with the ageing process and are recommended every 12 to 24 months to maintain results.

MANY WOMEN SUFFER pelvic pain, usually during the menstrual period. If you have painful periods which limit your normal work, or pelvic pain during intercourse, you may have a condition called endometriosis. Your GP may prescribe hormonal treatments to control pain, such as the oral contraceptive pill. If the pain continues, or worsens, you may need referral to a gynaecologist. The gynaecologist will take a thorough history and perform an examination. The most effective treatment for endometriosis is early diagnosis and surgical treatment. Medical evidence shows that if endometriosis is properly excised, most are cured. Only four percent treated by surgical means will have a recurrence of symptoms. A minority may have pain return even though the endometriosis has not (chronic pelvic pain). Applying a multidisciplinary approach can help here, with a gynaecologist, a pain specialist, physiotherapist, dieticians and other health professionals. If you have symptoms, please talk to your GP or visit our clinic.

NORTHSIDE AUTHORITY Simone Weigall shares how 16 years in the property industry has made her your go-to agent for Brisbane’s inner northern suburbs. How long have you been in the industry? I have been in the industry as an agent since 1999 when I started work as a real estate agent at Inner City Property in Wilston Village. How has your experience shaped your knowledge? Buying a property at age 18 allowed me to understand the importance of balancing a mortgage whilst maintaining a lifestyle - back then interest rates were well above 10 per cent. Understanding how it is to be a buyer and what it means to buy a property and being an extremely emotional experience, allows me to be a better agent. What’s your hallmark in the industry? Having a point of difference in presentation and styling of

“Understanding how it is to be a buyer and what it means to buy a property, and being an extremely emotional experience, allows me to be a better agent.” properties, as well as seeing the whole process through from start to finish is of real importance to me. My negotiation skills are something I believe make me stand out – it has always been a priority to be the best in those areas. Is there a specific area that you work in? Over the 16 years I have only ever concentrated on selling property in the Inner Northern Suburbs. What is your top tip for buyers? Do your

research and be prepared if you see a property that interests you. Have your finances in order and be ready to act swiftly. The current market is very buoyant, and properties are being listed and sold in very short periods of time with some having multiple offers. PLACE ESTATE REALTY P 0411 156 847 WWW.EPLACE.COM.AU

KITCHEN UPDATE Kitchen Trends share seven simple steps to increase the value of your home. JUST LIKE THE old saying, the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, the way to a home buyer’s heart is through the kitchen. Kitchen Trends reveal seven easy ways to increase your home’s value, and now we are re-gifting them to you. Upgrade your countertops. Upgrade an old eyesore benchtop to a solid, stylish surface (stone or granite). This can improve both the look and value of the kitchen. A fresh lick of paint. A fresh pop of colour over that old school wallpaper can create a whole new space! If you’re game do it yourself. Install durable flooring. Swap that vinyl for natural stone or wood flooring, automatically transforming the space from granny’s kitchen to the acclaimed master kitchen it is destined to be. Remove mismatched appliances. Throw out the

old white appliances that don’t match your new Thermomix. Having uniform appliances will make the kitchen look aesthetically pleasing. Improve your lighting. Open those curtains and change that dim light bulb to take your kitchen from a food prison to a food haven. Increase the space. Knock down that poorly placed wall or invest in a moveable kitchen island

to create a more open, inviting space. Explore better storage options. Touch-open draws and cupboards, wall hooks and shelving take the clutter away from the bench tops, creating a minimal luxurious space. KITCHEN TRENDS 8 EDMONDSTONE ST, NEWMARKET P 3856 6556 WWW.KITCHENTRENDS.COM.AU

TRAVEL YOUR BODY WILL HURT, YOU WILL GET FRUSTRATED AND YOU WILL FALL A DOZEN TIMES BEFORE YOU LEARN TO LINK YOUR TURNS, BUT TRUSTING YOURSELF AND PUSHING YOUR BOUNDARIES WILL GET YOU UP THAT CHAIRLIFT IN ONE PIECE... EVENTUALLY.

MISS SNOW IT ALL From beginner to snow bunny, Christie Sutherland traded the white office walls for white capped mountains and caught her very first snowflake. JUMPING ON THE plane to Queenstown as a 25-year-old who has never seen snow before, my excitement was somewhat annoying. After a romantic week away in Sri Lanka with my guy, this trip was all about friends. It was ladies vs. gents on the slopes; we thought patience would be the most sought after skill but we came out shredding, and after only ten days I had formed a new sporting addiction. Putting my experience into words was harder than I thought but I’ve done my best here with a wrap-up for first-timers. Be sure to set aside at least a week; it takes some stamina getting out of bed by day four but, trust me, it’s worth it... Snowboarding for beginners Your body will hurt, you will get frustrated and you will fall a dozen times before you learn to link your turns, but trusting yourself and pushing your boundaries will get you up that chairlift in one piece... eventually. Coronet Peak, Cardrona, 96

The Remarkables and Treble Cone are the four classic mountains and all have their pros and cons. On our first day; we started off with a night session at Coronet Peak under the falling snow and got an understanding of the basics; how to strap in your bindings, snowboard walking and directing yourself down a run — all of our attempts followed by laughs. From then on we took it day-by-day, the ladies got a private lesson at Cardrona and then up the slopes we went for the ride of our lives (after many magic carpet rides on the baby slopes). With terrain that is suitable for novices while still providing challenging courses for more advanced riders, Cardrona is an excellent starting point. Next up was The Remarkable’s. There is no denying that it lives up to its name; the mountains are positively breathtaking. For nervous beginners it is the place to start, with gentle slopes especially designed for those just finding their snow legs. The bar at the top of the chair lift provides a significant

incentive to get up there; you’ll be welcomed by hot dogs and music (Aprés Ski at its best). If you’ve reached the point in your trip when your confidence is high and technique is more stable, then Treble Cone should be added to the list (we gave it a bash and survived!). It is one of the largest ski areas in Queenstown and also boasts the longest skiing and snowboarding runs of the area. All in all, I never thought I would have the stamina or skill to be able to snowboard but I did it and I cannot wait for the next opportunity to get back on the slopes to feed this new found passion. Never ending appetite Snowboarding burns calories and makes you hungrier than you have ever been before, you just can’t get enough of all the options. Blue Kanu was our first stop after the slopes and it didn’t disappoint. The Pacific and Asian fusion cuisine, “Polynasia”, was unreal. The fresh, exotic SEPTEMBER15

Peregrine Winery

influence on the menu is something I haven’t seen experienced in the region and I highly recommend a share-plate style of dining. Madam Woo was another highlight. It is fairly new to Queenstown but it is no secret; the Hawker Rolls are not to be missed. Sasso surprised us with delciously authentic Italian cuisine, it is what carb dreams are made of! Ferg, how could I not mention you. Delivering monstrous burgers that one simply cannot leave Queenstown without trying and pastries that will beckon you for breakfast every morning (literally). Nobu, was our secret find, a hole in the wall that had the best coffee and incredible ever-changing breakfast options with quick service. Finally, True South Dining was one of my favourites. Head here to experience amazing local fare. We could sense the chefs’ admiration for fresh food in the impressive presentation of each adventurous dish. Queenstown knows how to dine! Luxury and Wine It’s not all about the sore bodies and cold weather, some of the world’s most amazing wines are created in the Otago region of Queenstown. We took a day off to appreciate the wineries and learn about the process of creating wine — and taste a few delicious drops, of course. Peregrine blew us away with the architecture of the winery. It resembles the wing of a flying bird and it mimics the mountainous region. The cellar door opens up into a barrel filled den of wood, glass and concrete, and the full-flavoured Peregrine wines are not to be missed. From there we made a trip through Bannockburn to Carrick, Akarua, Felton Road and Mt Difficulty. Each wine we tried offered their own intensities and incredible tastes to write home about. We couldn’t get enough of the luxury and devotion, so we scheduled a large and long lunch at the final stop Amesfield, where we splurged on the chef’s selection — a five-course meal with matched wines. We were lost in time, experiencing another side to beautiful diverse Queenstown. What to pack As a first-timer in freezing cold temps, I attempted to pack EVERYTHING warm in my wardrobe (plus stylemagazines.com.au

True South Dining

my bikini... I mean you never know, right?). But really, you don’t need much in Queenstown. The staples you cannot go without are: puffer jacket, favourite coat (my Stevi May was in hand), boots and sneakers, merino wool socks, thermals (leggings and vest), jeans (no rips), casual t-shirts and dressy blouses, a scarf (absolute essential) and at least two beanies. Strip your suitcase down to neutrals when packing for day-to-day and when it comes to the slopes, the brighter the better, believe me it’s how you spot people - you’ve got to stand out! Remember everything looks good in photos against a backdrop of cobble stone and snow-capped mountain peaks. Take me back Living in a winter wonderland for ten days leaves you walking away with nothing but magical thoughts. I didn’t want to leave. Queenstown captures your heart and if there is one thing you should tick off your list it is this - at any time of the year. I’ll see you soon, Queenstown, ready to “butter” (professional snowboarding term for an impossible beginner’s trick). The city has it all, plus more beauty than one can comprehend.

Christie geared up with the essentials — don’t forget your puffer jacket!

Queenstown knows how to dine.

There’s no place quite like Rumba...

A WORLD OF WINE Natasha Hanson, of Tash Maree Travel spoke to Style’s Candice Jackson about how she got her start in the world of wine.

Luxury beachfront 1, 2 & 3 bedroom serviced apartments

AFTER WORKING IN a variety of non-conventional jobs in Europe, Natasha knew readjusting to the nine to five mindset was not for her. So, she decided to use her experiences abroad to build her own business back home with the creation of Tash Maree Travel; a tour company offering wine tours in and around Brisbane. How did you get into the travel/wine industry? It had always been my dream to travel, explore and experience all kinds of cultures: so I did. I’ve lived in Bulgaria; Northern Spain and on a ‘Rolling Circus’ travelling Europe. I guided non-profit wine tasting tours in my downtime, and it was a turning point for me when I realized that everyone loves wine. What do you love most about your job? Sharing appreciation for good food and wine. I’m grateful to be exposed to some of the best

food and wine in Queensland, and to witness the passion and care that goes into creating them. Favourite travel destination? Calanques De Cassis, (South France) and the Sahara Desert at sunrise. Just magical! What’s your business mantra? Wine Not! What gets you through your day? Receiving rewarding feedback from my amazing customers, it beats receiving paperwork! And cheese – cheese gets me through the day. On the weekends you’ll find me… Playing music with my partner (trying to at least), catching up with friends and family, on the hunt for delicious eateries, or making my way to the beach or hinterlands for some R&R.
