The exhilarating Audi SQ5. It’s ok to stare. This is a rare chance to absorb the striking, aerodynamic body of the eye-catching Audi SQ5. Beyond its sophisticated yet sporty design, its breakthrough bi-turbo diesel engine exerts an astonishing 230kW of power, channelled to the road through quattro® permanent all-wheel drive and sports suspension. In fact, the Audi SQ5 inherits the same diesel powered technology used to win at Le Mans since 2006. No wonder it’s the fastest accelerating diesel SUV in Australia*.

Summer, Beach, Fashion The 2014 edition of the Gold Coast Swim Fashion Festival promises to be the biggest yet!

16

The Gold Coast Swim Fashion Festival celebrates all that is decadent about the Queensland summer culture. As one of the only fashion festivals of its kind on the summer calendar alongside Miami Swim Week, the GCSFF event is the cornerstone and hub of summer inspired swim and resort wear stemming from Asia and its surrounds. The festival is indicative of a vested effort to establish the Gold Coast as the creative, performance and education hub for swim and resort wear in not only Australia, but Asia at large. The worlds largest fashion production company, IMG of America has backed the 2014 edition of the festival. This will attract even more support and attention than previous years with more business and sponsorship support. Central to the festival are the Design Awards for Student and Emerging Designers. These awards have previously been a catalyst in establishing the careers of many budding Australian and Asian designers in the swim and resort wear industry. 2014 promises to be no exception, seeing growth in all areas of the awards covering not only fashion, but hair

and beauty, special events and digital media. Furthermore, the festival will include a series of educational workshops allowing emerging designers an avenue through which to hone their art and passion. National and international designers headline the event. Suzie Gennari of the Gold Coast based TOGS Swimwear whose company annually shows at Miami Swim Week in Florida is one of the main attractions this year. Her garments are featured in large US retail chains including, TKMax and Runway. The Gold Coast Swim Fashion Festival will also include major designers such as Sunseeker, Zingiber, Colin Heaney, Cleonie Swim, Peony and Jacinta Cara at the Southport Aquatic Centre and Marriott Surfers Paradise Resort and Spa from November 19 to 23, 2014. The 2014 edition of the event will also see an array of designers showcasing their work, an international Swim Model search, summer hats event and the Gala Awards luncheon. This event is certainly one not to be missed. Gold Coast Swim Fashion Festival November 19-23, 2014 www.goldcoastswimfashionfestival.com.au

Driving balance Two doctors in one house could get crowded – ego wise – but John and Sandra have found blissful balance. A clinical psychologist and a Doctor of Creative Writing in one marriage - John Barletta and Sandra Antonelli obviously lead busy lives. But they say even though their professions are important, there’s a strong focus on balance. “Clear boundaries are important,” John says. “At work we don’t talk about personal stuff and at home we don’t talk about work. It’s a real complementary marriage. There are things I’m in charge of, things Sandra’s in charge of.” “Yeah, you kill the spiders,” Sandra laughs. “We’re also one of those odd couples who actually sat down and negotiated what we would and wouldn’t do. I shot myself in the foot with the ironing I have to say!” Along with working as John’s practice manager, Sandra is an accomplished author and has just

released her third novel, Driving in Neutral - a love story about claustrophobia. “It focuses on fears people have. What keeps two people apart or what keeps them together. It fits in nicely with what John does with couple’s counselling.” They admit there’s not often a cross over between their two passions, but Sandra still secretly fears the day John suggests writing a novel together. “We both are really organised and controlled in our own ways and sometimes that doesn’t always mesh.” Even with two “closet control freaks” under one roof, there’s surprisingly no competition for head of the house... “The dog! He’s almost 15, so he’s a little old man, half blind, and has all these health issues,” Sandra says. “So anything we do we have to think about the dog.”

Social Conscience A friend in need is a friend indeed Stuartholme School gives back with Sony Camp. It is a special time of year when the students of Stuartholme School and St Laurence’s College, come together to host their annual Sony Foundation Children’s Holiday Camp, and this year was no different. Over the second last weekend in September, the students became companions for nineteen intellectual or physically disabled children. Stuartholme School has always recognised the importance of the school body being actively engaged with the wider community. The Sony Foundation’s Children Holiday Camps provide an enriching experience for disabled children, a

22

much needed respite for parents and siblings, and a great learning opportunity for the students. The itinerary includes countless fun-filled activities, such as an animal nursery, face painting, mini-Olympics and a party to finish on. The students learn about the challenges and demands involved with caring for a special needs child. Stuartholme students, Megan Chaffin (Year 12), and Milly Osborne (Year 11), who cared for gorgeous little seven year old, Tana du Toit, reflected on their experience. They recognised how the camp opened their eyes to the basic things we take

for granted everyday, that aren’t as easy for those with a disability. Since its inception in 1998, the camps have been providing a lifechanging experience for special needs children. There are now nineteen camps involving over 35 schools across Australia thanks to The Sony Foundation Australia. Stuartholme School Birdwood Tce, City P 3369 5466 www.stuartholme.com

The Sony Foundation Australia has raised in excess of $8 million for youth-related charities and causes through camps like Stuartholme School’s Sony Camp.

Function and Finesse A fusion of classic charm and modern embellishments stay true to a quintessential Queenslander. Ascot offers a prestige style of living, unparalleled in Brisbane. Meaning Leisah Beutner of Place Ascot truly has the dream job – selling handsome, classic family homes throughout this leafy, sought-after suburb. One of her most recent listings, 95 Yabba Street, Ascot, certainly embodies this picture. Sitting on its original site, this gorgeous 100-year-old home is steeped in history with seamless modern updates. “One of my favourite aspects of the property is the outdoor pavilion with built in kitchen and eight burner BBQ,” says Leisah. “Given Queenslanders love to entertain, this property lends itself to lazy summer days.” Current owner, Anne Back, describes the property as warm, friendly and inviting, and although large it’s in no way ostentatious. “We’ve been here 23 years,” says Anne. “As soon as

I walked in I fell in love with this house. It has a lovely atmosphere to it and a lovely design. All the bedrooms have access to light and air.” Anne says she still loves the home but, with the possibility of her kids moving on in the next few years, it feels like the right time to change. “I think it really needs a young family to really enjoy it like we used to.” Anne says it was important to work with an agent who understood the aesthetic of the home, and says Leisah has made the whole process very easy. “She’s driven and motivated which I like… we speak the same language.” place ascot 76 racecourse rd, ascot Contact leisah - p 0432 623 760 or lb@eplace.com.au

STYLE

man

Kim Duffin | 40 | Kitchen and Bathroom Designer / Design Director of Sublime Architectural Interiors

Style chats to Kim Duffin, on his fashion style and fashion purchases that take up 80 per cent of his shared room-sized wardrobe. When did you become interested in style? When I transitioned from manufacturing to design 15 years ago. Interior design has had me following fashion increasingly over the last decade and my own personal style has developed over this time as well. How do you dress for work? Tailored designer jeans with a well-cut shirt with one off shoes. I select what to wear each day depending on how I am feeling and what client I am seeing. How would you describe your style? Classic lines through tailored shirts and detailed shoes that are highlighted with bold prints and colours. What’s your fashion mantra? A good shoe will make or break an outfit! What’s your favourite new-season trend? Tan. Love Tan! Your favourite Brisbane men’s store? Apartment and Violent Green. Your favourite clothing store outside of Brisbane? Calibre. Your most indulgent fashion purchase? Leather shoes purchased in Milan (pictured). They have American $100 bills printed on the white

leather and have gold heels. They were €800. What is the typical response when people find out the size of your wardrobe? They are always surprised at how much I like colour and that I need more room for shoes than my partner Rebecca does! What will happen when the wardrobe/room is full? We will need to build a new home with a bigger wardrobe! What does your partner Rebecca think about your shopping habits? She gets very frustrated as I can spend hours looking for the right coloured shirt or shoes then end up right back at the first one I saw. Where can we find you….. On a Saturday night? A great restaurant like Restaurant Two, Blackbird or Stokehouse. On a Sunday morning? At home on the deck – enjoying the Sunday papers. On your next holiday? On safari in South Africa.

the timber ceiling mirrors the floor and shelving which marries it all together.

The place where style begins! Nothing screams luxury like your own master suite. It’s a must have for any budding fashionista says Kim Duffin from Sublime Architectural Interiors. Even if you don’t have a passion for fashion, a well-designed master bathroom and wardrobe space can make life a lot easier. When everything has its place it can help make take the stress out of making the important decisions on grooming, presentation or styling for that business meeting or special night out. The best way to plan a master suite is to think about how you would like use the space and to make a list of the items you would like to store and how you would like to use them in every day living. In this project the bathroom and wardrobe work in unison with each other, as bathing and dressing are perfectly compatible. Everything is stored exactly where you need it and in full view. The bonus is that a sanctuary is created by combining these spaces with the master bedroom, to ensure you get your ‘me time’ every day. This project combines the use of open shelving, drawers and cupboards, throughout the robe and in the vanities. This ensures that not everything is on view but those daily items are within easy stylemagazines.com.au

reach. There is also additional storage behind the vanity mirrors for those items that aren’t used as often or are too valuable to have on display. The raised platform used within the space provides a gentle segregation between the sleeping and bathing zones. The timber ceiling mirrors the material found on the floor and shelving, which marries it all together. The lighting is another key element; with task lighting around the vanities and under the robe shelving ensuring you never lose anything and can always tell the difference between black and navy. This space was designed to combine daily routine with moments of relaxation and rejuvenation. The suspended shelving system in the robe will ensure that you get the most use out of every piece, while keeping those designer shoes in a prime position. The best way to start the day is with your best foot forward and this space guarantees you can do just that. Physical skills are for life Ian Healy comments on the need for sport in society, as a fundamental aspect of human development. Human skills like throwing, catching, running, jumping, hitting and kicking are as important as numeracy and literacy in young people’s lives. As a former physical education teacher it is great to hear of a National Health and PE day last month where a lost emphasis on sport regains the spotlight. Less and less curriculum focuses on the physical is incredibly bad for our society, so teachers must not be allowed to shirk the physical stuff. In learning and then practising the initially challenging skills above, opportunities for character building present themselves. Teamwork is an important trait, so even working in pairs is a start. Persistence, repetition or frustrations are all tested in sport, and then for some the ability to help others will be displayed. Even lifelong, useful skills, like networking, can

MOVE IN THIS

OCTOBER

start from joining a sports club. But these healthy networks are sadly diminishing, as youth are too content sitting around waiting for their next party! Curiously at a time when we’ve identified a societal drinking problem, we are also letting our sporting emphasis slip. It doesn’t make sense. Activity, competitive or simply participatory gives confidence, mateship and something to cheer about at those parties. Upskilling teachers, sharing the curriculum in a bigger way and starting early is crucial. This is not easy, but if social behaviours are allowed to continue, where will we be in 20 years? 20 years of re-emphasis can probably arrest the slide before we can return to the fun, active, outdoorsy Australia, who love to swim, hit, throw and kick balls of all types! Is anyone listening?

Escape to Portside With so much to entertain you, venture out to Portside Wharf this weekend to relax and indulge in style. By Jane Schon Delicious Char Grilled Chicken from Byblos Bar

Shopping, films, and quality dining, Hamilton’s Portside Wharf is a day trip destination you should pencil in for this weekend. With a multitude of activities on offer, it’s easy to lose yourself for hours flitting from one place to the next. 9am: Start the day with breakfast at Cruiser’s Café Bar n Grill. Choose from the variety of modern Australian dishes with a Mediterranean injection, while relaxing in the alfresco setting. 10.30am: Wander down the boulevard and browse the men’s and women’s fashion. Be sure to take a pit stop at Deer Sir for one of their

signature cold pressed coffees. Then step next door to Co Design to peruse the timeless and quirky homewares. 1pm: For lunch, indulge in classic Italian at Gusto da Gianni, or go for fine wine and fine food at Restaurant Manx. Or, if you’re in the mood for something lighter, head upstairs to Sono for some fresh sashimi. 3pm: Relax and unwind with a facial at Ella Baché and drop your guy off at Bou’s for Men for some male grooming by an expert hand. 5pm: Start the evening with the extensive

cocktail list at Byblos Bar, and stay for a light meal of Lebanese-style tapas. But be warned, you simply can’t go past the desserts. We recommend the thick chocolate fondant, Ihsan’s Seduction. 9pm: Cosy up with a movie at Dendy Cinema Portside, offering the latest releases plus a range of international and art house films. Or simply stroll along the river and take in the stunning views. Portside Wharf 39 Hercules St, Hamilton P 3907 4111 www.portsidewharf.com.au

ready to rumba Supermodel Ashley Hart knows a thing or two about strutting down the catwalk, but Candice Jackson chats to her about her recent move to the dance floor! Admitting this is the longest she’s been back in Australia since moving to America seven years ago, Ashley says she is excited to be back to join the Dancing With The Stars cast, with the support of her family, friends and fellow model and fiancé Buck Palmer. Ashley says her dance partner Julz Tocker has already encouraged her to visualise taking home the coveted mirror-ball trophy. “Australia will really like Julz! My intention for the show was just to have fun and to learn how to dance. I don’t think I’ve ever giggled or laughed so much in my life.” As a yogi, Ashley thought her body awareness would improve her performance, but she says it’s a whole other ballpark. “I was really sore during rehearsals and now I feel like my body is finally stylemagazines.com.au

keeping up. I feel like I would be in my element with contemporary, because you can go barefoot and it feels more real, earthy and in the moment, like yoga,” she says. Ashley is competing with ten other stars, joking that she may have to take out fellow model and competitor Kyly Clarke’s legs as she has a dancing background that may become a threat to winning the show. “I’m looking forward to all of it to be honest, the glitz, the glamour, the nerves, the excitement... Bring it on!” Tune in to Channel 7 on Tuesdays at 7.30pm to watch Ashley and Julz heat up the dance floor and compete for their chosen charity, The Celebrate Life Foundation. a good vintage Celebrating 150 years this month, we look back on the historical Plough Inn’s history on the South Bank. You may have had a drink or a pub lunch at South Bank’s Plough Inn on the modern deck or in the busy beer garden, but did you know the laid back Aussie pub has been standing strong since 1864, despite three major floods and a fire? This month marks the Plough Inn’s 150th birthday. From where the South Brisbane wharves once stood, the pub has a fascinating past as its rough standing meant it hosted licensing commissions, horse sales and shared an alleyway to the old red-light district. It wasn’t until expo ‘88, that a modern rebirth occurred that would continue to flourish to this day. Jullian Whiting from Channel 7’s The Great South East caught up with Dave Argus, one of the owners of The Plough Inn to discuss his involvement in respecting the pubs yesteryear charm, whilst adding modern twists for Brisbane locals. Dave says there are a lot of historic pubs

that have been revamped in Brisbane, but not historically, where they have ensured to keep everything intact, including the original staircase. “We’re an old fashioned pub. There are no pokies, no gaming at all and no bottle shop, just great food, drinks, views and vibes,” he says. Dave says The Plough Inn should have fallen down by now, believing its resilient nature will probably see it outlive his lifetime and then some. The Plough Inn plans to bring in 150 years with a joint celebration with Carlton Draught, with a launch party kicking off on Wednesday October 8 and will carry on until December, with heaps of promotions and good ol’ fashion pub service. Epic Pharmacy celebrated the launch of their new uniforms by Brisbane Designer, Paul Hunt with a burst of colour.

EPIC LAUNCH With a new designer uniform and two of the city’s most inspirational people at the helm, Epic Pharmacy is a Queensland success story. Stuart Giles and Cathie Reid are the dynamic couple behind one of the State’s growing medical supply companies, Epic Pharmacy, formerly known as APHS. Impressive in business as they are in style, Cathie was named one of the Top 100 Women of Influence in 2013, and is one of Australia’s first Google Glass wearers, a tireless charity worker, and an avid fashion fan - always clad in the latest Gucci or Dior

(she recently attended the Dior show in Paris). Stuart is an award-winning businessman, has sat on the board of AEIOU, and sponsors a research foundation at Greenslopes Private Hospital. He is also a big fashion fan too, with a wardrobe full of Tom Ford suits. So when it came time for a new corporate look they turned to Brisbane couturier, Paul Hunt. “It might not seem like an obvious one to

ask Brisbane’s premier evening wear and bridal designer to design our corporate uniform, but we have known Paul for a long time and he just got what we wanted right away,” Cathie said. “He had the fabric design and the main drawings back to us within 24 hours and it was spot on. Even our head office staff, that don’t have to wear the uniform, are asking to wear it now!” www.epicpharmacy.com.au

A bold, shaped and neat brow can make all the difference to an individual’s facial structure or expressions and most women would know that one bad brow experience could leave you wondering if it’s possible to achieve the perfect brow consistently. Founder of The Brow Bar, Chernae Silk has built her business on just that; perfecting the brow. Known to many locals and celebrities as ‘The Brow Whisperer’, this successful entrepreneur has come a long way over the past 11 years to build her brand’s stellar reputation. Ben Elton

Amid rehearsals for his major rewrite, Gasp!, Ben Elton took five with Jane Schon to talk inspirations and all about his fantastic career.

How are the Gasp! rehearsals going? Very good, it is a tremendous privilege for a writer to revisit a play. I wrote it 25 years ago. The idea is, that we can learn something about the ways we treat our planetary riches and each other by imagining air as a resource that can be contained and sold. So it continues to have a social and satirical core but it also continues to be a full on comedy. How much control do you have once it’s in production? I have some control, but it’s not like that.

46

Wesley is a tremendous director, a great leader. It is a fantastic team. You’ve written so much over your career – where do the ideas come from? I do have sort of a restless imagination. But I don’t think when I’m not working. It’s been a long time since ideas just dropped into my head. Perhaps that’s more when you’re young when your store of organic ideas is not yet exhausted. Now I have to sit down and think harder. You’ve written plays, television scripts, musicals, you’ve performed Stand Up and directed – what’s your favourite? The work I like doing the most is in the theatre with actors. I enjoy the company of actors and I enjoy directing. What’s next? I have a new novel coming out, and I’m working on developing a new sitcom with the BBC, which is exciting, and of course I’ve got Gasp!, which I’m READ MORE working very hard ONLINE on at the moment. See Gasp! at the Playhouse Nov 17 – Dec 7 www.qpac.com.au

Legally Brunette Proving she’s more than just a pretty face, READ MORE Style sits down with Brisbane Broncos ONLINE cheerleader, Samantha Robinson to talk cheer life, university and her plans for the future. Between modelling and dancing, you also study law at QUT. Why law? I have always been inspired to attain a university degree to ensure my options are invariably open. I have a passion for law as it allows me to utilise my academic skills and will provide me with a career for life. Tell us how you began cheering for the Broncos? I heard about the auditions on the radio and thought it would be an amazing opportunity so I went along. Luckily I got selected from hundreds of girls, received a contract and have had my contract renewed every year since! Your favourite moment so far? Definitely my first game cheerleading, running out onto the phenomenal

atmosphere of 40,000 people at Suncorp Stadium, it’s indescribable and that feeling has kept me coming back season after season. You seem to have a pretty hectic schedule. How do you balance work and play? I think it’s all about organisation, and prioritising what’s important right now and what is important for my future. My downtime is usually spent studying, but I do love a night out with my girlfriends or heading to the coast. How do you keep fit and healthy? For me it’s all about balance, having fun with my workouts and focusing on filling my body with nutrients but not depriving myself. It’s important to be happy.

Wine Bar At Home

Spring Carnival Style for men

Soirée season trends

As the weather warms our minds turn to entertaining, looking for ‘on trend’ ideas that are low maintenance and fun. Today’s wine bar trend is perfect and can be easily replicated at home. Beverages are always a good place to start. Go for Manzanilla sherry, a good lambrusco or prosecco and dry German Riesling. Beer is always a crowd pleaser on a summer’s day German wheat beer is perfect. Buy from one of the many excellent local craft beer brewers. Next grab a large wooden serving board and load it with charcuterie meats like Jamón ibérico, bresaola, salumi and top it off with a generous slice of duck liver pate. Pickled vegetables are the perfect partner for rich salty meats – go for golden beets or target beets, small whole heirloom tomatoes, cauliflower, carrots and Asian greens. To finish simply add olives and cheese - an aged cheddar, sheep’s blue and triple cream brie. And breads like a well-made baguette or sourdough are always a welcome addition to perfect your at-home wine bar replication!

Spring is about bolder colour choices, Mixing of patterns and lightweight easy to wear fabrics. This season we’re seeing a unique range of hues, with light red, aqua, bright teal, flamingo pink and jade green coming to attention. Patterns – Tired of checks?? Me too. Look to differentiate yourself with stripes. Use both vertical and horizontal stripes. Just be careful not to look like you have just come from a rowing regatta. Note: if you are mixing the same pattern ensure there is a difference in scale. For the more fashion forward gentlemen, while floral patterns may still be popular they have had their time. Instead look for smaller geometric patterns including circles. Note: this might be a little difficult to find unless you go to a tailor. Styling – While Europe has embraced the double-breasted jacket for the past couple of seasons, most Australian men are yet to adopt this stylish option. You should reconsider! Instead of a patch pocket, try the patch pocket with a flap. Push your style boundary this Spring Carnival.

It’s official! Spring is in the air and an abundance of natural floral beauty is all surrounding. Not only are the trees responding to the warmer weather, but so are our lifestyle choices, with lighter and more ephemeral tones on trend throughout fashion, homewares and events. Blossom tones are particularly popular at the moment, with shades of blush, rose and cream all on show, especially for our spring weddings. Keep it fresh and exciting by incorporating a serious hit of luxe with rich gold tones and a slew of bespoke fabrics, such as sequined cloths or solid matt metallics. The warmer weather has seen a sharp rise in the number of twilight soiree occasions and these outdoor events are trending with a look that is glamorous, elegant and very high end. Transferring the look for a corporate event can be done with sleek black lounge furniture with the same gold and metallic accents. This brings a polished feel to the outdoors and successfully marries the last of the cooler weather with the longer twilight hours.

Fatal financial moves

DIY with a difference

dress up your home

Marriage can be an effective entity for wealth creation when both people are committed to the long term and keeping the below in mind: Employment Skills: One of the early mistakes women often make in the marriage partnership, is that they surrender their earning capacity to nurture the family and to support the husband’s long term career prospects. Each partner should give consideration to maintaining their skills, education and experience to earn income in case the marriage ends. Super: Women in Australia statistically live longer than men and yet are traditionally paid less than men; frequently have time out of their careers and are often the main carers of elderly parents and extended family members - all circumstances eroding their capacity to build up superannuation. The partners in a marriage should consider maintaining super contributions for both parties. Financially informed: In making major financial decisions, consideration should be given to each party obtaining independent legal and accounting advice.

I am not a keen renovator. I know the ‘DIY’ attitude is inherently Australian, but somehow just watching those poor souls on renovating shows sanding walls at midnight is enough to make me break into a sweat. However, I still can’t help but be inspired by the finished looks, I’m addicted to the ‘before’ and ‘after’ shots and marvel at their ingenuity. But… I have a secret weapon for lazy renovators. Art. Lots of it! Now, don’t get me wrong – I know you can’t hide a dodgy bathroom with an oil painting and I’m not suggesting that you hang a canvas to cover up holes in the wall - but when it’s a minor facelift your talking about – art can make a big difference. It’s definitely easier to hang things on walls then paint them and you walk away with your art once the property is sold! Win, win. So think about artwork and pictures on the wall for your home or project and consider how you can dress up your renovation with an easy, attractive artistic solution.

Mama’s Home offers a unique shopping experience for customers receiving personal attention and fittings by our specialised stylists. With spring well and truly in the air, it’s the perfect time to dress up your home or find the a gift for someone special before the Christmas rush hits. Our luxurious homewares and bedding are an absolute standout this spring with a mix of fun and sophistication, catering to any style. Check out Lazybones as they have outdone themselves this season, with a palette of pretty pastels mixed with a hint of yesteryear. Plan, protect and prosper

your Travel Bucket List

How to pick a photographer

How can design structures protect you, your family and assets if the life plan you have hits a roadblock? First step is to protect what you have or may have in the future. On average your house and contents insurance is going to be around $120/month, car insurance about $100/month and mortgage/ rental payments around $3,000/month but how will you meet those payments if you get sick or have an accident and can’t work, or suffer a traumatic event that prevents you working or receiving particular treatment you may need? Simply arrange to have a protection plan put in place for yourself and the other most significant person in your life. Remember, the life plan is more than likely based on the assumption you will both work to achieve the outcomes you most desire or one of you may have charge of the household so the other can earn the big dollars.

Travel feeds our soul. We live in a magnificent world – so go out and explore it! Here are a few suggestions we have ticked off… Adventure: Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego - where the mountains and the sea come together like no other place. Wildlife: Galápagos Islands - amazing biodiversity provides exciting wildlife spotting both on land and underwater. Cruising: Voyages to Antiquity - small ship with five star historic and cultural cruises to ancient civilisations. Beach Resort: Alacati – a charming authentic Turkish Aegean town with crystal clear water and acclaimed hospitality. Family holiday: African Wildlife Safari in luxury tented accommodation. Next tourist hotspots: Sri Lanka and Burma (Myanmar) - both on our doorstep! The Piece de Résistance: Antarctica – filled with preserved natural beauty. What are you waiting for? Visit us at New Farm travel to book your next journey!

THESE DAYS, with cameras and smartphones everywhere, anyone can call themselves a photographer. So here are a few tips for choosing an expert to capture family memories: • A professional photographer gets it right every frame. Ask to see a full set of photos from one session, not just their best photos. • What is the quality like? Do they use professional camera and lenses, resulting in high quality, clarity and detail for better photographs? • Are they qualified and experienced? • Can they offer a range and guide you on the best products to suit your family, from wall art to artistic pieces including digital options and can they withstand the test of time? • A true photo artist can work in a studio or with what they have around them, your photos need to reflect your family and your photographer will know how to work with what you need! Most importantly, do your research and find a photographer that can work with the unpredictability of children and work safely with your loved ones.

apartment LAND VALUE

Varicose Veins in later life

perfect Party ready skin

A key driver behind capital growth of property is land value. Seems straightforward, but does this golden rule work when it comes to investing in apartments? How it works: divide say 20 apartments into the total value of the land at say $4M; this gives you $200,000 land value per apartment. If you bought at $450,000, then land content value is 44% of the total value. Many property advisers will tell you to aim for an apartment with land content value of at least 40%. So, if you are an owner of an apartment in areas like Southbank or Inner CBD, this theory may come as a shock, as it’s common for land content value in these areas to be as low as 5%–15%. But this doesn’t mean these properties won’t experience any growth. It’s also about demand and supply. In areas increasingly dominated by high and medium density living, “competition for available space” is a much better guide.

When you are approaching 65 years old, these days you can often look forward to a life expectancy well into or beyond your 80s – so why not make it comfortable! Varicose veins might not cause any symptoms, but over time they will become progressively larger causing pressure on the skin around the feet and ankles from the venous hypertension. The tissue damage to the skin around the feet and ankles are due to a lack of oxygen and the buildup of toxic waste metabolites. The concern with this is that the skin may breakdown and ulcerate, which is the end stage of varicose vein disease and can become a debilitating complication because of the discomfort and substantial inconvenience. The Leg Vein Doctor at its Brisbane clinic in Toowong offers various treatment options that can minimise or prevent the eventual complication of varicose ulceration. If there is a risk of venous ulceration of the legs, age is hardly ever a barrier for The Leg Vein Doctor to provide appropriate treatment.

There are many factors that affect our skin. For example, diet, stress, hormone changes and incorrect products, which is actually one of the main causes for adult acne. It’s important to understand that the needs of our skin change from season to season and year to year. Using incorrect skincare products can actually cause breakouts and accelerate the skin’s ageing process! Who wants that? Facial skin is the most sensitive part of your body and it’s also the most difficult place to hide imperfections. You can avoid patchy, dry or blemished skin—just by getting the right products for YOU! With party season ahead, drink loads of water and eat clean for a healthy complexion. Finding the right products for your skin can be difficult, but now you don’t need to run the risk of using the wrong products on your precious skin and wasting money EVER again. Book your ‘Visia Imaging Skin Health Assessment’ at Integrity and see the incredible results for yourself!

GO HARD OR GO HOME?

BUILD SUCCESS WITH BROWS

Butler’s Pantries

Recently, popular media has focused on the benefits of high-intensity exercise, pushing the idea that anything less than maximum exertion is a waste of time. I’m here to tell you, it’s not true! While high-intensity exercise burns a lot of calories, it won’t utilise fat stores in the body. The most efficient way to utilise fat stores is moderateintensity exercise (between 65 to 75 per cent of maximum heart rate), such as brisk walking, moderate-pace cycling or swimming. This type of exercise is also more efficient at burning abdominal fat, which when in excess increases your risk of developing chronic diseases. Remember, it is very difficult to lose weight without also ensuring you have a healthy and appropriate diet for your lifestyle. Moderateintensity exercise can also eliminate unnecessary hunger and fatigue, which can assist in making the right food choices. There are many different types and intensities of exercise, and they all achieve different outcomes. The important question you have to ask yourself is “what am I trying to achieve?”

As the founder of The Brow Bar I have been dedicated to preening and perfecting the eyebrows of Australians for over 11 years and now I want to help young businesswomen in the hair salon industry grow their businesses. I have created a new concept, which will bridge the gap between hair and beauty, while sharing the secrets of my success. My passion for helping young women grow and succeed in the industry urged me to create a new salon business model. In the industry today, it’s adapt or die…I have been holding on tightly to my secret brow and business techniques for 11 years and now it’s time to share! I understand the need to offer clients something unique and by collaborating with like-minded, passionate people and bringing hair and brows together under one roof, I feel it’s a winning formula for our industry. Joint venture allows salon businesses to host The Brow Bar concept in their own salon without the financial burden of the fit-out costs and artist management. Add value to your salon with mentoring, branding and marketing collaboration.

Our clients are loving butler’s pantries for their ability to maximise space while having a minimising impact. Everyone wants and could do with a space where everything is a little more organised. What people don’t realise is that a typical butler’s pantry is designed to have plenty of room to move and is not designed as a space saver. Over the last few years I have been evolving the traditional butler’s pantry into appliance pantries, walk-in pantries and appliance cupboards. You can even upgrade to a scullery by adding a sink and dishwasher to the pantry. Using items such as flush floor track systems to keep the transition seamless, you can achieve the look and feel of the butler’s pantry while working within a typical kitchen footprint. With clever design and innovative manufacturing techniques you can include the most wanted features of a butler’s pantry without losing valuable space in adjoining areas to create a seamless transition between preparing the kids lunches to serving espresso for a high tea.

the soleil collection is a carefully

Rise and shine

crafted compendium of cocktails and punches made to tantalise your taste buds

Celebrate Brisbane’s sunshine with the newest poolside bar at South Bank. A new day has dawned at South Bank with the opening of the Soleil Pool Bar. The venue, which borrows its name from the French word for sun, is the latest offering from the team who brought you the critically acclaimed Bacchus. Soleil Pool Bar commands a prime position on the podium level in South Bank’s cosmopolitan Grey Street. The bar represents rich gold and white hues and complements the warm timber features, which wrap around the pool, inviting guests to experience an early summer as Soleil Pool Bar seamlessly blurs the outdoors with indoors. Just as man has forever looked to the sun, Soleil Pool Bar features an enormous LED ceiling screen

as the entry statement, a space of moving vision, which sets the luxe scene. The Soleil signature cocktail collection is a carefully crafted compendium of cocktails and punches, which can be enjoyed poolside from 10am each day. If dipping your toes in the Soleil pool doesn’t entice, they have also created numerous stylistic seating areas and hideouts that create the appeal of a marquee bar for the city. They’ve also crafted their own sound infusing their in-house instrumentalists with funky disco, nu-disco and house music in their ornate gold trimmed DJ booth, referred to as the ‘entertainment altar’. Make a splash at Brisbane’s newest poolside

venue this month and celebrate summer early with DJ entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights and from 3pm on Sundays. Their first official event is now on sale. Don’t sweat the sweet stuff The artisan bakers behind Emily’s Sweet Treats share their top tips on choosing the perfect matrimonial centrepiece. Choosing the right cake to suit your budget, theme and guest list can be a daunting task. Thankfully Emil and Jenny, the pair behind Emily’s Sweet Treats, have a few tips to remove the stress out of planning this integral element. If you like to move with the trends, the pair agree the combination of French and British cake designs are becoming increasingly popular both here and abroard. For example, a moist vanilla cake covered with buttercream frosting finish, decorated with white or soft pink, and tastefully finished with some gold or lustre. In a shift away from tradition, couples are opting for these more simplistic designs instead of the extravagant, multi-tiered creations popular in decades past. “More couples prefer the cake to be delicious, and keep the designs as simple as possible,” Jenny says.

Emil and Jenny emphasise the importance of being prepared and having a clear picture in your mind before meeting with your designers. “Do some research before your consultation and provide as much information as possible, such as colour theme, your dress design, the bouquet, or venue décor,” Jenny says. And don’t forget timing. From baking to finish the process can be lengthy, so be prepared and book in your designer as early as possible. Most importantly, don’t look at your wedding cake as an obligatory item. Emil and Jenny say it should be an extension of your personality and your designer needs to work with you to create one you love. Rush welcomes back Friday nights on the green this October!

Birthday Rush From opening a venue where numerous others had failed, Rush CBD celebrates its 10th birthday. MANY CBD hospitality hot spots come and go, but one inner city bar has dominated the fiercely competitive industry and are now celebrating 10 years of success! Owned by the Real Management Solutions Group (RMS), directors Elias Philipou, Mounir Ibrahim and Donna Di Santo have seen Rush become Brisbane’s biggest meeting room. Customers use the restaurant as an extension to their offices, with regulars often visiting the venue three to four times a day to meet with clients over coffee, breakfast, lunch, after work drinks or an early dinner. Donna says it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. “In our first week of being open, the fire sprinklers went off in the middle of lunch whilst staff ran out the doors holding a cake. Happily adapting to the situation, staff and customers alike laughed

and sang along to the tune of Happy Birthday.” In celebrating their milestone birthday, Rush will be kicking off festivities with 10 days of giveaways from October 1, culminating in the return of their much-loved Friday Nights on the Green on Friday October 10. Every day the venue will announce a secret stash giveaway at a random time throughout the day, so keep your eyes peeled on their Facebook and Instagam pages for your chance to win some great prizes, including free coffees, drinks, vouchers, wines and more. Life in the

’riffe With Jenny Kazoullis

I don’t really like to talk in terms of the market being ‘hot’, but there’s no denying the stats. Industry figures show there were 1,641 new real estate listings in the last week of August, which was an increase of 145 from the previous week. Buyers are seeking to position themselves for a 2015 job change or are looking for a new school catchment area. In light of my last months’ sales I’m experiencing a shortage of listings in my key market areas, Teneriffe and Newstead. There’s never been a better time to list, so why not call me today!

Get amongst the herbs! Discover the benefits of going green with a herbal mini peel from Brookie Jesberg at Brooklyn Beauty Bar. Do yourself a natural favour, by going green and getting amongst some skin-deliciousness with a revitalising herbal mini peel! The Mini herbal peel is all you need to know, to have your skin ready for that perfect spring glow! It’s true, this catchy rhyme says it all. A mini herbal peel is not only twice as strong as microdermabrasion, it’s also completely free of synthetic acids and chemicals. The source of the main ingredient is my all time favourite skin treatment, spirulina, which in itself contains over 250 traces of natural elements, vitamins and nutrients. How it works The mini herbal peel is incorporated into a relaxing facial. These powerful herbs are mechanically massaged into your skin with a herbal solution for about three minutes after cleansing and

extractions and is followed by a soothing and hydrating mask. Results Not only will your skin look and feel super smooth with a dewey glow, but these lovely little herbs are full of natural vitamins and nutrients that will nourish your skin as they invisibly dissolve into your skin tissue. Overall The non-invasive herbal mini peel needs no down time afterwards and it won’t have you experiencing peeling after-effects. It’s the perfect option for that special occasion, as it naturally feeds your skin tissues as well as exfoliates. Your skin will feel and look vibrant. It’s a win-win, I say. Brookie xx

Simone Weigall

A seller’s market With 15 years experience in the property game, Style chats with Simone Weigall of Place Real Estate to get an insider’s look on the current property climate. What’s the market like right now? Now is a great time to market and sell a property. There is more consumer confidence with lower interest rates. Transaction numbers are up and the number of properties for sale are down. The combination of high buyer demand and lower levels of supply is driving the property market upwards. What advice would you give to someone looking to sell? You want your buyer to have an immediate attraction to your property. Street appeal is so important - paint the fence, plant flowers, ensure the entire front area is inviting. De-clutter the whole house too, including pantries and wardrobes. And often repainting skirting and doorframes make all the difference. Make sure you profile your buyer – will your furniture appeal to them? If you need to hire furniture, it’s well worth every cent.

What’s the craziest or funniest thing you’ve ever had to hide, clean up or cover up before an open house? I have sold houses with snakes as pets in fish tanks in the living room, I have made beds and cleaned up kitchens for clients, and I have picked up dirty laundry from floors! Where would we find you on a Saturday? I spend most of the day conducting many open houses around the inner suburbs of Brisbane, and doing private inspections. And Sunday? I like to firstly go for a long walk then I usually catch up with family or friends. I love nothing more than a long Sunday lunch. Looking to buy? Ask the expert Aylward Game Solicitors’ Conveyancing Manager, Libby Dessaix tells us the most important things to consider when buying a property. “Buyers need to ensure they thoroughly investigate the property – has there been any renovation work? Does the recent bathroom revamp have plumbing certifications? etc.” It’s important to seek a solicitor for conveyancing before contracts are signed. “Many signed contracts include special conditions not prepared by a solicitor, which buyers may later find out are insufficient or not binding.”

Next hotel brisbane is the first of its kind in the world, and we give you the inside scoop!

The NEXT top hotel in Brisbane Combining the latest technology with luxury and international style, Next Hotel is a world-first in Brisbane. Under the flagship brand of Singapore-based SilverNeedle Hospitality, Next Hotel Brisbane has opened its doors on the Queen Street Mall. It’s the first of its kind in the world (soon to gain a younger sister in Sri-Lanka), and we were invited to be the very first to take a tour of the high-tech and uber stylish 304 room hotel - the city’s biggest development in recent years. Over 26 floors, Next Hotel offers a premier hotel experience for savvy travellers. Guests are given unhindered access to hotel services through a mobile app, developed by Next, which acts as the room key as well as an easy way to check in or out. The app can also be used in or out of the hotel to adjust room temperatures, dim the lights, or order room service, so you can have a

refreshing cocktail ready and waiting after a long day of shopping downstairs at the new Forever 21! All rooms are equipped with your very own Samsung Galaxy S4 to be used as your key to what’s on in Brisbane, including everything from events to the hottest restaurants and bars, weather forecasts, and bus and ferry times. As for the mini-bar, guests have the choice of four free items daily (yes, you read that right). Under the “We Trust You” policy, guests won’t be nagged if they have consumed anything beyond the complimentary items. Forget the 3pm check in, guests can check into their room at anytime if available. But if it’s not quite ready, the Club Lounge is a comfortable alternative while you wait - which is certainly where

we’d be spending all our time! The lounge is available to all guests - not just the VIPs - and offers 24 hour facilities including an outdoor pool, adjoining terrace bar, gym and business centre. Plus the inTransit Zone appreciates the needs of weary travellers and businessmen by providing exclusive sleep pods and showers. You can even order a masseuse! Want to check it out but don’t need the room? Stop by for quick power lunch or a long sumptuous dinner at Lennons Restaurant & Bar. Overlooking the mall, diners can enjoy an array of delicious options based on fresh, regional produce. Next Hotel Brisbane 72 Queen Street, City P 3222 3222 www.nexthotels.com/brisbane
