SUBSTANCE AND BUBBLES I’ve been told that I would go to the opening of an envelope and last month was no exception. I had the pleasure of presenting an envelope containing $10,000 to our Style and Substance winner, Sarah Pearce. Our campaign unearthed a ton of talent in Brisbane and our readers voted for Sarah. You can read about Sarah’s entrepreneurial idea on page 23. I keep hearing about the countdown to Christmas but there are some important dates on my calendar prior. First up of course is Melbourne Cup which we Stylers celebrate heartily. As a team we normally frock up and head to a venue together. This year we will be having lunch and maybe a Veuve or two at Stokehouse at South Bank as we watch the race that stops the nation. If you need some tips on what we wear on the first Tuesday in November see our tips on page 54. The silly season will be on us before we know it and we’ve got rooftop bars to underground hangouts that are designed just for that. See page 56 for some soirée inspiration.

THE OUTSIDER.

The MINI Countryman doesn’t play by the rules. In fact, it’s nothing like what you’d expect an SUV to be. It doesn’t do mid-week tennis with the ladies. It doesn’t take half an hour to reverse park, and it believes going off-road should mean more than parking next to the pitch at soccer practice. It’s an outsider. A rebel. And it’s definitely not for everyone. Meet the defiantly MINI SUV. Visit Brisbane MINI Garage today.

A WHITE NIGHT Brooke Williams and Amy Grey, the creators of Le Dîner En Blanc Brisbane, tell us about the exclusive all white, open-air dinner party popping up this month. What was the reason behind the first ever Dîner En Blanc event you created? We wanted to be the first city to bring Dîner en Blanc to Australia. We are very passionate about using and activating public space; this was the perfect platform to begin that. Why do you think it has become so popular in so many different cities? Everyone who comes along feels like they’re a part of the organisation – it’s a pop-up picnic in a secret location, everyone brings their own table and decorations and the event builds itself, what’s not to love about a surprise. How does someone get invited to attend

14

Amy Grey and Brooke Williams

Next event: Saturday, 17th October register at brisbane.dinerenblanc.info the exclusive event? If you know someone who attended as a member last year, ask them to sponsor you. Otherwise add your name to our waiting list. You will receive an invite a few weeks before the event, it’s first come, first served, and we expect our tickets to sell out quickly. Why are there rules that go alongside the event? The rules are based on tradition.

They are the same around the world – so no matter what city you attend you will have the same magical experience. What memorable moments stand out? Every year is full of them. Last year everyone started dancing behind the DJ on the amphitheater stairs of the Roma Street Parklands, singing and clapping along, it was so unexpected.

Hello Sunday Morning’s Chris Raine

A SOBERING THOUGHT Macquarie Bank 2015 Social Innovation Award winner, Chris Raine talks to Style about Australia’s drinking culture.

HELLO SUNDAY MORNING HAS BECOME A MOVEMENT

WHEN CHRIS RAINE was 22 he was working in advertising and as a nightclub promoter. He noticed that he was starting to depend on drinking to build his confidence and deal with depression. “It was starting to become the centre of my life,” says Chris. He identified with the ‘dry’ drinking culture that is all too prevalent in our country. “This means that we have a tendency towards binge and abstinence, rather than moderation,” says Chris. He began searching for support but very little resonated with him. Instead, he decided to take matters into his own hands. Chris took a year off drinking and blogged about his experiences.

WITH AN INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY OF OVER 60,000 PEOPLE. “Five years later, that blog has become a movement with an international community of over 60,000 people,” he says. Hello Sunday Morning offers an app and a social network of honest and authentic support. Chris identifies three core ingredients in starting the journey towards a better relationship with alcohol: Mindfulness: Ask yourself why you are drinking then make conscious choices based around that answer.

Connection: Surround yourself with healthy people. Time: Learn new behaviour in order to form new patterns of thinking. Hello Sunday Morning has contributed to a larger cultural shift in Australia. According to last year’s ABS statistics, the country is drinking the least it has in over 50 years, with risky drinking in young people having dropped by over four per cent. SMART START-UPS Commbank’s Small Business State Manager Margaret Jones shares six tips to get you on track to smarter business banking. WITH A NEW financial year just starting, now is the time to make your business run as efficiently and cost-effectively as you can. State Manager for Small Business at Commbank, Margaret Jones shares six tips to help you get the most from your online banking. Make your business banking easier, faster and smarter this financial year, by getting the most out of features in your online banking. 1. Make pay day easy. Whether you’ve got one employee or 100, you can pay everyone in NetBank with just a few clicks, and simplify your accounting at the same time. Use a group transfer to pay staff and suppliers automatically, or import payment files straight from an accounting package like MYOB. 2. Simplify business purchases — and never miss a card payment. can make business purchases easy and help cover short-term cash flow gaps. Make sure you pay off your credit card on time and avoid paying unnecessary fees and interest by setting up an email or SMS alert in NetBank. 3. Pay bills on time, every time. The only thing worse than chasing unpaid invoices is being chased yourself. BPAY View keeps your bills together in one convenient place, making it easy to keep track of bills without chasing paper. You can even schedule payments up to a year and a half in advance. 4. Give your business an edge. If multiple people are running the finances at your business, then CommBiz could be the right choice for you. It can give authorised users secure access to your banking, while controlling and tracking what each person can do. A free iPad app is included, which

delivers unique insights into your business and customers. 5. Move to online statements. Save on paper statements cluttering your mail box by moving to online statements. You can then view statements on demand in NetBank. 6. Run your business on the move. Your business shouldn’t come to a standstill just because you’re out of the office. Use the CommBank app to check balances, transfer funds and apply for new accounts while you’re on the move. CommBiz Mobile allows powerful and secure business banking on your iPhone and iPad, including balances, authorisations, payments and foreign exchange. TRIP FOR YOUR TASTEBUDS Whether you’re a sweet tooth, or love a bold, dry Shiraz, Natasha Hansen of Tash Maree Travel shows us why you’ll find the perfect drop on her Deluxe Wine Tasting Tour in Mt Tamborine. First stop: Mt Tamborine Distillery. This citrus and avocado farm-turned-small pot distillery boasts award winning liqueurs, spirits and schnapps (which we get to taste, of course!) Must-try… the Wattle Toffee Liqueur. The wattle seeds are roasted which gives the liqueur a delicious caramel popcorn flavour. Second stop: Witches Falls Winery. The only working winery on the mountain, Witches Falls is a James Halliday five red star winery and do all from washing grapes, through to bottling. Third stop: The Lookout. We head over to the breathtaking view of where the grapes grow – from Mt Tamborine out to the Granite Belt. Fourth stop: Mason Wines and lunch at

Eden Restaurant. Here we taste a variety of fun, fresh Queensland wines in their stunning Cellar Door. Changing with each season, the meals at Eden Restaurant showcase perfectly matched flavours and detailed presentation. Fifth stop: Cedar Creek Estate. Located on a beautiful property, guests are served generous tastes of both Cedar Creek Estate wines and a selection of wine from Queensland Wine Centre. Last, but not least: The Cheese Factory. Here we taste a wide variety of cheeses, dips and yoghurts, like the Triple Cream Brie, the popular Milsy’s Cheddar, and my personal favourite, the St Mor Goats Cheese, lightly rolled in ash.

Tour cost is $130pp and includes: • 5-10 TASTING SAMPLES AT EACH LOCATION. • A GOURMET TWO-COURSE MEAL OVERLOOKING THE VINEYARDS. • A GENEROUS CHEESE TASTING AT WITCHES CHASE CHEESE FACTORY. • SNACKS AND COLD DRINKS ON THE BUS. • A PICK UP AND DROP OFF SERVICE TO YOUR DOORSTEP (TO BRISBANE).

THE JOURNEY SO FAR:

SARAH PEARCE

Our Style + Substance Winner! Over the last two months, with your help, Style has been looking for Brisbane’s next big idea. We are thrilled to introduce you to our winner: Sarah Pearce, founder of online photography booking platform, TravelShoot. We sat down with her to find out what the journey has been like so far – and what’s coming next.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN…

SAR AH’S STYLE + SUBSTANCE JOUR NEY

IT ALL STARTED in New York City a few years ago, when Sarah’s photographer friend was trying to build his portfolio. Together with her husband, Sarah posed in some iconic NYC destinations as her friend snapped away. “The outcome of our ‘friendly shoot’ was much more than we anticipated; the images we got back blew our minds! To this day they remain framed on our wall as the best memento of that holiday.” Such was the light bulb moment behind TravelShoot, an online booking platform that connects travellers with photographers around the world. Doing away (hopefully forever) with selfie sticks, the budding start-up makes it easy and affordable to have some lasting memories Leah-Jane Musch, Sarah Pearce, captured beautifully in Carly Day & Adam Derrick your chosen city.

The Style + Substance kick-start funding of $10,000 will help bring Sarah’s five-year vision to life, with thousands of TravelShoot customers sharing their beautiful travel images all over social media. “This prize money will assist with current and urgent development costs that will support the TravelShoot service to be more scalable,” says Sarah. “We’re planning for massive growth, so now we want to invest in some savvy back-end technology processes and tools that will help us cater for large volume bookings and a great customer experience.”

WHERE TO NEXT FOR TR AVELSHOOT? “The $10,000 is going to really allow us to scale our business, and I’m really grateful for this amazing financial assistance,” says Sarah. “It’s interesting though – the reason I actually entered the competition was for the feature article in Style. I’ve always been a big fan of Style, and I think the readers will really understand our product. The opportunity to connect with Style’s readers is money-can’t-buy stuff.” The sudden injection of both funding and PR also puts TravelShoot’s future in perspective. “Seven million Aussies travel every year – our goal now is to take over the destination photography market.”

DO YOU HEAR THE PEOPLE SING?

WIN! ONE DOUBLE PASS TO SEE LES MISÉRABLES AT QPAC. VISIT STYLEMAGAZINES. COM.AU TO ENTER.

Hayden Tee who plays the iconic role of Javert in Les Misérables shares what Brisbane audiences can expect with Christie Sutherland. HAYDEN TEE DESCRIBES the new production to be ‘like walking into Les Mis the way the guy who wrote it imagined it to look’. The musical phenomenon that is Les Misérables is winding down its triumphant season in Sydney, ready to make its way to Brisbane this November. “It is one of the world’s greatest musicals and this version is completely different to the original,” says Hayden. “It’s a new version with all of the classic moments that you remember but the direction is very different. Instead of it being melodramatic and presentational is now very raw and naturalistic.” Producer Cameron Mackintosh is celebrating 50 years in show business, having produced more musicals than anyone else in history. “Cameron is a very hands on producer, his attention to detail is 24

phenomenal, he knows exactly what he wants and that’s why his shows are the way they are,” says Hayden. This momentous occasion coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Les Misérables production. The musical blockbuster features glorious modernised staging, orchestrations and dazzling reimagined scenery inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo. The original Australian production by Mackintosh saw him launch the careers of some of Australia’s biggest stars. For this newest production, he has once again assembled a cast poised to follow

the same successful path. Hayden’s role is very challenging. “I try not to force the character on top of myself, it’s rather about finding the thing I have in common and tuning into that. That way it comes form a place of truth. Early on it was finding that physicality and dealing with the suicide, it took a lot of mental energy.” You might think you know the all time classic, but you’ve never seen it like this before, Australian audiences should be very proud. JOSHUA FISK | 35 | DIRECTOR OF RUBIX MODULAR

From growing up in the country to playing in rock bands, Style chats with entrepreneur and funny man Joshua Fisk about his personal style.

“MY STYLE IS SIMPLE AND COMFORTABLE. COUNTRY MEETS ROCK.”

How would you describe your style? Simple and comfortable. Country meets rock. When did you start becoming aware of fashion? For as long as I can remember I couldn’t go out without my jeans, shoes, favourite flanno and hat! I used to spend a lot of time in Bondi playing in bands... That’s when I really really noticed the addiction! How do you dress for work? R.M.s, organic raw denim, Nudie or Ksubi jeans, unbuttoned shirt with a tee underneath. It’s always warm middle of the day, and cool about one day a year so can’t go past a trusty Ralph Lauren puffer vest.

What trend would you like to see banned? Goths. Every time I see some Goths here in Queensland I feel like offering them a bottle of water and a towel for the sweat. Whose celebrity style do you admire? Johnny Depp. He nails the accessories and epic layers every time and never looks like he’s trying! Any fashion faux pas? Hipsters, footy scarfs, thongs and socks. Your best budget-buy? I picked up a second hand U-Boat watch, which I was told was fake and didn’t work for $70. I took it to a jeweller and it turned out to be real with a value of $5,700 – it just needed a

It depends on the setting – a rad Hugo Boss fitted suit for a wedding or special occasion or otherwise, smart casual. Short back and sides or a little scruffy? I am scruffy as! Always. Where can we find you… On a Saturday night? Blackbird or Riverbar. If not, at the footy or seeing a live band. On a Sunday morning? Church, then beach with my wife and four kids. On your next holiday? Bali. Can’t pass it for cost, family, fun and surf!

WITH MORE PUBLIC AWARENESS ABOUT MINDFULNESS AND MEDITATION, STRESS IS PUBLIC ENEMY NUMBER ONE AND IS WIDELY AGREED TO HAVE DAMAGING EFFECTS ON HEALTH.

THE BUSY TRAP We’re living in a world where we are increasingly consumed by our complex and fast-paced lives. Hannah Doody finds out whether being ‘busy’ is a curse, or a blessing in disguise. IF YOU LIVE in Australia in the 21st Century, you’ve probably listened to a lot of people tell you how busy they are. It’s become a sort of default response when you ask them how they’re going: “Busy!” “Crazy busy.” And the common response is either an agreement, or a sort of congratulation: “Me too” or “Better than being bored, right?” So, why are we so busy? Is it something we create, or is it thrust upon us? Oliver Burkemann, of The Guardian says the more efficient you are, the more you are enabling yourself to take on, and inevitably, the more busy you will become. He says being busy is a choice, and we can choose to not respond to that email, or not attend that party, or not to work all those hours stylemagazines.com.au

of overtime. Tim Kreider, of the New York Times goes so far as to say that being busy has become a sort of status symbol, that you must be important if you are so heavily booked, and in demand so many hours of the day. Regardless, there’s no doubt our lives are becoming increasingly overloaded. So is being busy good or bad for us? With more public awareness about mindfulness and meditation, stress is public enemy number one and is widely agreed to have damaging effects on health. Even celebrities are advocating the benefits of meditation, as people use it to wind back the pace, calm the mind and become more in touch with the ‘now’.

Kreider says being inactive is essential for humans; that it’s “not just a vacation, or an indulgence, but is as indispensable to the brain as Vitamin D is to the body”. He says idle dreaming is the essence of what we do, brings perspective and helps us make unexpected connections. As a millennial, I think uncertainty is a factor which keeps young people so busy – we are on a journey of self discovery and still shaping the people we will become. But, at the end of the day, you’re not going to get everything done. So, we might as well choose what we want, and forget the rest. Being busy doesn’t have to equal stress, it can be constructive, useful, and fulfilling – just make sure you’re busy doing what you love. 27

INTO AFRICA, OUT WITH ART

VISIT STYLE MAGAZINES WEBSITE FOR YOUR CHANCE TO WIN ONE OF 25 55CM TALL, LIMITED EDITION PRINTS OF CORY SALMOND’S “LIFE SIZE KUDU”.

A lover of nature, Cory Salmond has drawn and sketched the world around him since he was a boy – a passion which has blossomed into a promising career. “AS A CHILD, I was forever sketching plants and wildlife around the house and yard, collecting insects, feathers and even snake skins,” Cory remembers. Following many trips to Africa as an adult, the subject of Cory’s artistic focus has now shifted predominantly to African wildlife. While in Africa, Cory was inspired by the size and presence of African animals and following his most recent trip, he set to work sketching these animals in startling life-size proportions. Cory creates his works using traditional drawing techniques with dry mediums and colour pastels, enjoying the challenge associated with this method of drawing. As a young boy, Cory loved to watch David Attenborough documentaries and this

is where his interest in African wildlife began. He is passionate about supporting African wildlife charities and has raised money for these causes through his exhibitions. “It really is heartbreaking to hear of the devastating effects poaching is having on all wildlife, not only in Africa, but around the world,” Cory says. In April 2013, Cory held his first solo exhibition at the Graydon Gallery in New Farm. The exhibition featured 20 of Cory’s works and ran for seven days. After recent completion of a second successful solo exhibition Cory’s next adventure is to ship his Land Rover to Argentina and drive it north to Alaska, while sketching all the way.

RIDE FOR LIFE For the tamer kind of bikie, join the Ride for Life on Sunday November 8. WHEN THE CHALLENGE began in 2010, it was a chance for Brisbane’s massive cycling community to get together. Hosted by Brisbane BMW and Westside BMW, five years later the event continues to grow. Through its many supporters, participants and sponsors, the challenge has raised over $100,000 for nominated charities over its history. This year, they are once again calling for riding enthusiasts to get on board and support Guide Dogs Queensland and Epilepsy QLD. Corporate groups, teams and individuals are welcome to take part in the non-competitive social ride around Brisbane. The 86 kilometre ride, while challenging, brings an overwhelming sense of camaraderie as the 1,000 person event is completed in speed groups by the riders.

With safety of the upmost importance, every rider is a VIP with police escorts, first aid, mechanical and support vehicles helping along the way and rest stop refreshments are all part of the event. Additionally there is a post-ride breakfast where there will be entertainment, music, food stalls and a presentation to charities, followed by an exclusive after-party at Byblos Bar and Restaurant. The registration fee includes all of this, as well as a charity donation, a drink bottle and a free 2015 Ride for Life jersey to wear with pride. There is little more that will provide the rewarding feeling of not only doing something you love, but supporting two local and extremely well deserving charities while you do it. I’VE OFFICIALLY BECOME SWEPT UP IN THE MONOGRAMMING CRAZE AND

MAD FOR MONOGRAM

HAVE THE INSATIABLE URGE TO HAVE MY INITIALS STAMPED ON EVERYTHING.

A new trend is taking over the streets, and this time it’s personal, writes Elizabeth Best. THERE’S A GORGEOUS black leather bag with silver detailing, creamy suede lining and shiny zip detail sitting on the conference table with my name on it… literally. I’ve officially become swept up in the monogramming craze and have the insatiable urge to have my initials stamped on everything. Lara Hopkins, CEO of bespoke handbag and monogramming company, Mon Purse says she’s not surprised; she knows exactly why the old-fashioned trend of labelling leather is back in vogue. “People are looking to purchase more experiences and meaningful products versus another item that they already have,” she says. “By monogramming and personalising your bag, you

30

have something unique, personal to you.” And the craze has reached epic proportions. Companies such as Mon Purse, The Daily Edited, Keep it Personal, GAP, Burberry and Louis Vuitton are all offering monogrammed items from phone cases, notebooks and clutches, to scarves, swimwear and even pyjamas. Where Mon Purse differs is in their customisable designs. Not only did I get my initials stamped on my bag but I chose the design, leather (colour and type), lining, hardware – even whether or not I wanted little metal feet (I did). And it was handmade in Europe, ooh la la! Now, what else can I get my name on? WWW.MONPURSE.COM

Tickets on sale NOW! OktoberfestBrisbane.com.au Dan McNamee (lead guitar), Dan Williams (drums), Jim Finn (keys/bass)

Art Vs Science drummer Dan Williams chats to Hannah Doody about their new EP, failed stage dives and why their old music gives him ‘good vibes’. KNOWN FOR THEIR high voltage live shows and fun loving electro pop, Sydney trio Art Vs Science were influenced by a myriad of music genres when they produced their new album, ‘Off The Edge Of The Earth and Into Forever, Forever.’ “I guess you could say (the album) is kind of heavier, but not like metal heavy or like space funk heavy,” drummer Dan Williams says. “It’s just kind of a snapshot of many different things, I’m really into rhymes and I love Tame Impala’s new record, whereas Dan Mac is pretty heavy into journey techno.” Dan says he feels proud of their first single ‘Parlez Vous Francais?’, which reached number two in the 2009 Triple J Hottest 100. “It’s kind of like listening to a high school band or something,” Dan laughs. “I have fond memories of that time and when I hear it, I have good vibes.” Accustomed to donning wacky outfits on stage, the band have become a much loved staple among

Aussies, known for their equally crazy, slightly manic and energetic personas translating into live shows. “Dan Mac fell off stage at a show once. I think we were playing ‘Parlez Vous’ and at the end he ran and tried to do the big dramatic rock jump finale; he jumped off with too much momentum, then tripped over the speaker and fell off the stage,” Dan laughs. “He was fine, but he smashed his guitar.” With an Australian tour around the corner, Dan says fans can expect a mix of old and new tracks, with some surprises. “We just try to make it interesting for ourselves and hope that everyone else finds it interesting too.” Catch Art Vs Science in Brisbane as they headline Valley Fiesta (23 October) and the Falls Music and Arts Festival in Byron Bay (31 December 2015 - 3 January 2016).

WEDDING DOS AND DON’TS It’s possible to wear white to a wedding. Yes, you heard us! WITH WEDDING SEASON upon us, we thought it best to go over the do’s and don’ts of attending a loved one’s big day. 1. Thou shalt not commit the drunken wedding speech. 2. Thou shalt never comment on the bride’s weight. 3. Thou shalt avoid getting stuck at the singles table like the plague. We could go on and on… Of all the wedding commandments, remember one in particular; thou shalt never wear white, because hell hath no fury like a bride out-whited. But, we’ve found the appropriate way to wear white, and it’s one gem of a loophole: Pearls. Here are five accessories from Girls Love Pearls that will have you rocking a sneaky peak of white without getting on bridezilla’s bad side: 1 – STRANDS Channel your inner Grace Kelly, Jackie O or Coco Chanel herself with a classic strand of pearls for a feminine, timeless look.

2 – PENDANTS Pendants can work with any neckline you choose. Get a little bit fancy and rock a pearl pendant with a diamond-encrusted setting. 3 – EAR CANDY Feel free to explore other pearl shapes instead of the typical round. Button, oval, drop and baroque-shaped pearls make for something different on your lobes. 4 – BRACELETS Drape your wrists in simple, single strands, or multiply your pearl power with double and triple-row bracelets for a refined finish. 5 – RINGS Weddings are all about the rings, so pretty your fingers with a simple or embellished band. FORM AND FUNCTION

Holly Ryan Squiggle brooch $300

Queensland is fast becoming a hub for designers and creative minds. Hannah Doody speaks to Susan Driver and Holly Ryan – two jewellery designers who are making serious waves in their industry.

SUSAN DRIVER, BRISBANE Did you always want to be a jewellery designer? I always wanted to design. As an architect I was taught that a designer was a designer, whether that be of art, fashion, architecture, or jewellery. Jewellery always interested me, as it’s similar to architecture – conceptual and involves structure to create beauty. What inspires you? People, art, architecture and travel. What rituals do you follow when designing? I prefer quiet or music, I try to find a period of time that I can focus, with two gorgeous boys this may involve heading to the 48

HOLLY RYAN, COOLUM BEACH beach by myself. If you weren’t designing jewellery, what would we find you doing? I might still be involved in architecture, or painting or some other form of design. To be honest I haven’t thought about it. This is where my heart is, so this is what I do. If you could have anyone in the world wear your designs, who would it be? All women that represent strength, confidence and style – Elle Macpherson, Garance Doré, Olivia Palermo and Emma Stone. WWW.SUSANDRIVER.COM.AU

Did you always want to be a jewellery designer? Not always, but my mother made jewellery and I always admired her in the studio, tapping away with a hammer and setting things on fire. I thought she was the coolest woman alive but I wasn’t interested in jewellery, I fell into it in my final year studying Fashion at QUT. It was fun, I set things on fire, I thought I was pretty cool. Describe your designs? Minimal, modern, timeless. Everything is stripped back to its rawest form and designed to be worn every day. Your jewellery has been

featured at MBFWA and Jarryd James’ music video, how does it feel to have reached this level of exposure? I feel overwhelmed. I’ve worked hard on this label for four years but everything is happening so quickly. I can’t believe these dreams have come true. I have to have bigger dreams now! If you weren’t designing jewellery, what would we find you doing? I really miss making clothing, so when I feel the time is right I will launch a clothing label because that has always been my dream. ONE THING I HAVE LEARNT WHILE WORKING AT STYLE IS THAT NO DAY IS THE SAME.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF It’s not all glamour for mum boss Riria (Ree) Taukamo as she shares her day as Sales and Marketing Manager at Style Magazines. IT’S A TYPICAL trait of a Styler to wake up, full of ideas and ready to take on Brisbane. Mine starts at 5am when I haul myself to either the gym or a boxing session with my little brother Paora. It’s time to myself and helps calm the bizillion ideas bouncing around in my head. It’s then home to get my three year old toddler ready for daycare, scour my wardrobe 20+ times for an outfit and, if my choco baby Kemara is playing nice, we are out the door on time. Touch wood! As the Sales and Marketing Manager for one of Brisbane’s favourite lifestyle mags, my day is never short of meetings but it’s definitely the part of my role that I absolutely love. The other day a client recalled their first meeting with me, five months pregnant, having a very ‘casual chat’ about the need to partner with Style Magazines and a bit of friendly banter about the last Rugby World Cup. I had a laugh, as I have a fairly relaxed style of doing business (clearly the New Zealander in me), and four years on, that has not changed and nor has my loyalty to rugby, the All Blacks and our clients. Don’t get me wrong, I’m no pushover but I’m a big believer in relationship building and if you love what you do, it’s not selling. You are simply sharing your passion with the people who want to be a part of your business. As a manager, I am lucky to have a team of account strategists, Kelly, Claire and Christie, who get our concept. I’ll sometimes tag along to their appointments, as it gives me a chance to check out some of our favourite suburbs, new hot spots and catch the gossip first hand from local businesses. With Christmas approaching and our digital stylemagazines.com.au

#chocoba

by

platform heating up, all spare time is spent in the office to finalise the various events and marketing activity we have on the go. One thing I have learnt while working at Style is that no day is the same. It’s one of the perks of the job and it keeps me motivated to show up, step up and do my part in creating a magazine and digital space that breathes the essence of Brisbane. I have also acquired some interesting talents in my near five years with Style Magazines including car park stalking, a photographic memory of nearly every magazine since 2012, exceeding my monthly 10GB data pack, an art for the ‘daycare drop and go’ and a healthy obsession/appreciation for good hair, well shaped brows and pencil skirts. May not be resume worthy but hey, they’re valued skills in the Style world!

MIGRAINES: MEN VS WOMEN

SO YOU HAVE the product range, and the shop front locale, but how to attract new customers and place your product front and centre? Enter visual merchandising – an extremely stand-out solution that screams ‘wow’ in even the smallest of spaces. We’re talking highly visual window displays, commanding central installations and suspended ceiling spectacles. Think tiers of fresh produce cascading over well-placed kitchenwares for a food emporium, bold colours and bright patterns to push a new Spring fashion collection or even creating a beachside setting for a new range of umbrellas. The sky is the limit when it comes to creativity and The Styled Group specialise in a vast range of styling products, backdrops and custom designed furniture for all retail areas. From bespoke market carts to giant made-to-order letters, floor to ceiling flower walls to hand painted props – our team has you covered. With Christmas just around the corner, why not raise your offering to the next level with a custom designed, knock-out visual display!

MANY WOMEN TURN to makeup to feel beautiful and end up harming their skin in the process, not to mention, using cosmetics to hide insecurities can be damaging to self-esteem. Beauty is seen differently by everyone. One person may see a woman’s natural look as beautiful, while someone else might see a woman wearing cosmetics as beautiful – beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So what makes you beautiful? The answer lies in you, and beauty is feeling comfortable in your own skin. With beautiful skin, women are able to look in the mirror and feel happy and not worry about make-up coming off. Your own skin will be with you throughout your life, beyond all the clothing, accessories and makeup. So, it’s worth taking some time to invest in the health of your skin, so you can learn to love it in all its natural glory. With the help of a good diet, a skin practitioner to help you out and some skin products you can too take advantage of this survival mechanism we have and look truly beautiful.

I OFTEN GET asked the question, ‘Are migraines more common in women than men?’ Out of the three million migraine sufferers in Australia, migraines are at least three times more common in women than in men. Research also shows that women are at a higher risk in developing tension headaches than men. Unfortunately, it doesn’t stop there for women, menstrual migraines are common too. Some can say that men have it easy, however this is untrue. If you have ever heard or suffered a Cluster headache then you would understand how debilitating this severe condition is. Women report cluster headache pain to be worse than giving childbirth. Cluster headaches are also known as suicide headaches, as sufferers have been known to contemplate suicidal thoughts due to the excruciating pain. Unfortunately for men, it affects them three times more than females. Whether you are a female or male, and suffer from chronic headaches and migraines, there is help available without the need of medication. Call us to find out how.

ARE YOU MINDFUL AT WORK?

SIZE DOES MATTER

DID YOU KNOW, sought-after school areas drive competition among buyers? According to research by Domain, properties located in good school catchments can increase the purchase price by up to 10 to 15 per cent. High-performing government schools are as much a real estate drawcard as ensuites, pools and bedrooms, so when owning a property in a coveted catchment area, your position is vital. Now is the season that buyers who are specifically searching for school zones are out in force. Take advantage of your position while this premium is most relevant. Traditionally the Brisbane market is strongest in Spring, so the time between now and Christmas is an ideal time to list your property and take advantage of the increased supply of buyers. In addition to this, the other top selling features that will attract buyers include: • Position, position, position • Well-renovated kitchens and bathrooms • Impressive street presence • Entertaining areas

YOU HAVE PROBABLY heard the word ‘mindfulness’ a lot these days. But what is it? It is about ensuring your mind is fully attending to what’s happening and what you are doing and feeling. The benefits of mindfulness include reducing stress, gaining awareness and insight and increasing our general well-being. It can also be helpful in the workplace where we often fill our minds with distractions and end up with information overload. Here are four mindful practices you can apply in your workplace: 1. Make a choice of how to start your day – rather than getting to work and letting the day run away from you, choose to start the day by being aware of how you are and how you feel before you walk into work. 2. Be mindful while eating lunch – attend to the flavours, taste and texture of your food. 3. Breathe between meetings – don’t look at emails or texts between meetings, just walk, be aware of others and the air around you. 4. Sit at your desk – pause and reflect, notice how you feel and take notice of your breath.

WHEN LOOKING TO buy an apartment off-theplan, it is important to remember not to base your decision on price alone but what you are getting for the price. You want the largest floor size for the best possible price. So how do you do this? The rate per square metre is the key metric to compare value. You may think that two different two bedroom apartments in the same suburb at a comparable price would be similar, but never assume two items priced the same are comparable. Also, never assume that a lower price means better value. Some developers produce what is called “investment grade” stock. These will often appear to be of great value, with a low price tag in a prime location, however, make sure you look at the cost per square metre, as these apartments can be tiny in size at an inflated cost. It is also important to compare the location of the apartment within the suburb and quality of fixtures and finishes, as these can differ dramatically.

FIND PARADISE IN HAWAII

SPORT AND VARICOSE VEINS

INFRARED SAUNA THERAPY

HAWAII AND HER islands boast premier shorelines and majestic sunsets, set amongst a tropical climate all year round. What to see: Explore the island of Oahu for its pristine beaches, world renowned shopping and cuisine. • Relax at Waikiki Beach or Waimanalo Bay. • Swim at Waimea Falls. • Enjoy a traditional Luau at Paradise Cove. • Visit Pearl Harbour. • Dine at La Mer (fine dining restaurant). • Snorkel at Hanuama Bay. • Take a drive to the world famous North Shore home to Turtle Bay Resort and Pipeline. • Hike the Diamond Head Trail. • Enjoy a world famous Mai Tai at the Halekulani. • In the evening sit back and unwind under the banyan tree for night time entertainment at the Moana Surfrider. If traditional Hawaii is more your scene, head over to the lush green island of Kauai. Take a luxury catamaran to the exquisite Na Pali Coast and explore all it’s wonders.

AT OUR CLINIC, we frequently see runners and cyclists with varicose veins. The huge increase in load on the venous system of the legs during intense physical activity can damage the vein walls, for those already with a predisposition. Many patients defer treatment to avoid interfering with sporting schedules, but the more prolonged the delay in treatment, the higher the risk that microcellular damage to the skin around the lower leg and ankles will occur. In the long term, there is a risk of the skin ulcerating. Modern treatments are non-invasive, and don’t require vascular surgery. Down time is negligible as you don’t need to be admitted to hospital and no general anaesthetic is required. You are back on your feet for a 30 minute monitored treadmill walk immediately after the procedure and are then able to drive home. Upper body weights and low impact exercise such as walking, swimming, yoga and Pilates can continue following treatment, while short intensity running and cycling can recommence usually within a fortnight.

WHAT ASSISTS IN detoxification, weight loss, pain relief, lowers blood pressure, improves circulation, and purifies the skin? The answer is the Sunlighten Infrared Sauna, which I am thrilled to have welcomed to our studio. The health benefits are abundant, ranging from easing symptoms of arthritis to metabolism support and weight loss. At Hypoxi, we are all about empowering wellness and championing positive, long-term health decisions. Sunlighten Infrared Saunas tie in with this philosophy because they contribute to ongoing health benefits including those mentioned above as well as cell health, relaxation, and wound healing. Infrared Sauna Therapy can even assist in complementary cancer care due to its detoxifying effects, its ability to reduce the side effects of conventional therapies, and increase the effectiveness of chemotherapy. Whether you’re looking to complement your current health and fitness or detoxify your body, Infrared Sauna Therapy might be just the thing you need to tackle the New Year head on.

SHOES MAKE THE MAN

BARBECUE LIKE A PRO

GREAT LEADERS = GREAT COMPANIES

WITH SPRING CARNIVAL upon us there is a lot of focus on the suit, tie and pocket handkerchief, but one of the most important elements is usually forgotten - your shoes. Imagine a Mercedes-Benz with just wheels... Shoes make, or destroy your outfit. Women understand this and it’s why they have many pairs. This is also the reason women generally look at a man’s shoes first before your face. A way to look at it is this - If you take care of your shoes, you will take care of them. So a polished shoe is a must, along with little or no creases across the toes (if you get creases across the toe, the shoes are too big for you). Melbourne Cup is a month away so you still have time to design a made to measure shoe. Contact us for more details. Ladies, I am sure you know of Shoes of Prey. With this in mind, Suit of Change is always in desperate need of men’s business/formal shoes. If you have shoes you can pass on it would be much appreciated.

SPRING IS HERE and outdoor cooking is on the menu. It’s time to upgrade from the boring backyard snag burner to a quality outdoor cooking setup equal in both performance and finish to your indoor chef’s kitchen. The addition of a roasting hood on your BBQ will allow you to create fantastic pizzas, large roasts, rotisserie cooking and smoked foods. A high performance grill gives you the tools required for a brilliant hot sear for those juicy steaks and fat free cooking with controlled flareup and better fat management. If you are replacing an in-built BBQ then rest assured, there are plenty of options for you too. At Aussie BBQs, we carry many ranges of in-built BBQs to suit almost any application including the all new in-built Weber Family Q that fits snugly into the same cut-out as most traditional 4-burner BBQs along with Grandfire, Saber, Beefeater, Gasmate, Heatlie, and DCS. Some BBQs are arguably more easily cleaned than others, however like your car, it is easiest to use a professional service, so give us a call.

GREAT LEADERS MAKE great companies, and great companies also create great leaders. But where do you begin? It’s a bit like the chicken and the egg. It’s unlikely that your company has a pool of talented leaders sitting around, but you may have potential leaders from all levels of the organisation that you can find and nurture. To remain successful in the future, it’s vital to have a strategy in place that helps discover these people and guide them through a program of professional development especially designed for leadership coaching emerging leaders. By building a leadership pipeline, you have great leaders who will lead your company in the future, and an improved quality and diversity across your leadership group. Do great companies create great leaders? They certainly do. Start with our Emerging Leaders or empowHER Programs and watch your leadership talent evolve. To find out more about our programs, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team today.

SPRING RACING LUXE FOR LESS Before you empty your savings account in anticipation of the Spring races – hold your horses! Here are five tips for how to look a million bucks, without spending it. Shop during sale season. Sale stock isn’t always old stock, and the sale racks are a great place to start for nabbing that great bargain. Also, if you like something and have the confidence to work it, then go for it! Make your own fascinator. Create an original design out of feathers, adornments and other pieces of fabric. Rather than spending $100 and more on a fascinator, create something unique for less than $20. You won’t have to endure the awkward moment where you run into someone with the same fascinator! Choose shoes wisely. A day at the races often involves walking on dirt or grassy turf, which ladies, isn’t too fun when you’ve spent

54

thousands on Manolo Blahniks. Make sure you find a pair that are comfortable but still in your price range. Even better, revive an older pair from your shoe‑drobe. Do your own makeup, hair and nails. Ditch the high end salons for some high end YouTube clips or vlogs. You can save some serious money by doing it yourself. If you want, splurge on a new lipstick or nail kit. Borrow from a friend or sister. What’s yours is mine, right? Ask around to see if your sister or a girlfriend will let go of their Zimmermann cocktail dress for a few days. If you can’t buy, then borrow, but remember to dry clean and return the item in perfect condition.

BLURRED HEMLINES Sarah McAlpine talks flattering fits for your next party purchase. SOIRÉE SEASON IS in full swing, and October is a month when most of us find ourselves scouring the racks for that perfect festive frock. When the mini had its moment, finding a party dress was relatively simple; but these days we’re spoiled for choice with an array of lengths, cuts and styles for every occasion. Here’s what you need to know about hemlines: If you’re short you’ll want to flash some flesh and stick with a shorter length. Excess fabric can make you look frumpy, so avoid loose maxi skirts like the plague. Team a mini with nude strappy heels to lengthen the leg. If you carry your weight around your midsection you’ll want to make a show of your legs instead. Asymmetric styles draw the eye away from the tummy, and peplum detailing will work wonders to make you feel fabulous in a fitted style. Generally

ASYMMETRIC STYLES DRAW THE EYE AWAY FROM THE TUMMY, AND PEPLUM DETAILING WILL WORK WONDERS TO MAKE YOU FEEL FABULOUS IN A FITTED STYLE. though, stick to skirts with a slight flare. If you’ve got Kardashian curves the midi skirt is your new BFF. If you’re rocking lean calves, opt for a fitted body con number. This hemline does land on the thickest part of your lower leg, so if you don’t love this area you should consider an A-line option. The midi always, always requires a heel too – so consider treating yourself to shoes as well… go on, we said it’s okay. WANT MORE? Four products. Two minutes. Ready. Set. GO!

2-MINUTE MAKEUP TRICKS There are ways to make your face shine when you’re running out of time, writes Elizabeth Best. STROBING, CONTOURING, BLURRING: they may be the hottest trends in beauty right now, but time-friendly they ain’t. Getting those angles, highlighting the right places and blending, blending, blending might make your face pop but the party’s over by the time you’re done. We asked Danielle Riley, owner of à la lumière Makeup and Beauty for her must-have products to get you out the door in two minutes flat. “I’ll keep it simple: concealer, eyeliner, mascara and crème blush,” she says. “It’s all you need.” She advises a salmon or peachy-coloured concealer is a tired girl’s best friend. “The darkness under our eyes is often blue-based, and salmon or peach counteracts.” So first up dab a bit of concealer under the eyes to

make you look fresh and awake. Danielle says crème blush is a wonder product, as it’s essentially a two-in-one. “Dab on a little for blush, then dab some over your lips for a rosy glow.” Then a swoop of eyeliner on the top and bottom lids, along with a sweep of mascara will make eyes look wider and more defined. “Tightlining, or using liner on the upper lash line rather than above or below it, really thickens out your lashes and gives the illusion of fullness,” she explains. If you have a little more time up your sleeve, Dani recommends using a little highlighter on your brow bone, bridge of your nose and upper cheekbones to give you a fresh, dewy look.

THE WRITE STUFF

IT’S THAT TIME again; the Winter coats are off and it’s time to enjoy the festive season! I know what you’re thinking – but – there is no need to regret that you spent your Winter weekends on the couch and not at the gym! I’m talking about a transformation that starts with your eyes and ends with your soul. The Brow Bar is committed to positively impacting the lives of women who are in need of a confidence boost. Looking great doesn’t start with how you look or what you’re wearing, it is how you perceive and feel about yourself. Your eyebrows are a powerful tool that have the ability to change your overall appearance. With plenty of treatments to enhance the eyes, The Brow Bar’s signature Brow Lift‑Shaping uses secret and developed techniques which can turn your unkempt Winter brows into perfectly sculpted ones that frame the face perfectly. So, if you’re looking for an added confidence boost for Summer, contact The Brow Bar today for more details.

WHAT TRAINING HAS your Pilates instructor had? This is a really important question to ask, and understand why it is important. Because of the way Pilates affects the body it can be a dangerous tool in the hands of someone who does not understand the exercises, their purpose and the effects of load. In Australia there are many Pilates instructor courses, however only a diploma trained instructor has a complete understanding of the Pilates method, various pathologies and anatomy. Pilates is not about increasing load to make the exercise harder, in fact it shows little understanding of the method and the equipment. A diploma level instructor has done 18 months of training and over 480 hours in apprentice teaching and mastery meaning they have a true respect for the Pilates method. At The Body Refinery I only employ diploma level qualified instructors, meaning that you can be sure your instructor is teaching with knowledge and understanding along with respect for the Pilates method.

KIDS KEEP DIARIES of their inner thoughts and feelings, yet as they grow up few continue with the practice. There is value in expressive writing, called journalling, whereby you record ideas, questions, desires, observations and emotions accumulated over time. Its purpose is to enhance growth through the process of reflection and improving self-awareness. The focus of attention can include relationships, career, difficulties, goals and health. A journal is unique and will mirror your personality, preferences and experiences. Use an exercise book for journalling and do it for at least 15 minutes at the end of most days; don’t worry about spelling or grammar. Experiment with writing and see what works best. You can write about the same thing day to day, or write about something different each day. It’s up to you, but really letting go and exploring your deep emotions and thoughts is best. Routinely reviewing your journal to see how you have developed over time will be a treat.

BUILD A LEAN BODY

COSMETIC MOLE REMOVAL

REBIRTH AND RENEW

A LEAN PHYSIQUE is one that is toned, with minimal fat and shows off defined muscles. “How do I get one of those”, you ask? It’s actually not that hard! Exercising, detoxing and eating clean are three key factors to achieve a lean body, and also to living a long and happy life. FAR Infrared heated yoga is a great way to exercise and detox at the same time. FAR Infared is proven to be seven times more detoxing than regular hot yoga, as it allows the stubborn heavy metals and toxins to be expelled through sweat. However, even if you are super fit and detox regularly, eating unhealthily is like using water as car fuel – it won’t work. So my advice is to eat as natural as you can with the bulk being vegetables with small amounts of organic meat or eggs for protein. No (or very little) sugar and limit highly processed foods like bread or pasta. Following these steps, you will feel better, look better and above all have a much stronger immune system.

MOLES ARE COMMON in the sunny Australian climate. The vast majority of moles that appear on the skin before the age of 30 are commonly noncancerous, but can cause irritation on the skin or be a cosmetic nuisance. Unwanted protruding moles and skin tags can be removed by a simple radio-frequency procedure by our experienced team. Your moles will initially be checked by a doctor and any lesions of concern will be sent to the laboratory for testing. The procedure takes a short time, and requires only a local anaesthetic, which is very fast acting. A small dressing is applied afterwards, which can be left on during showers and is removed a few days later. You can resume normal daily activities after your procedure. You don’t have to live with unsightly, raised moles on your face, neck or body if you don’t want to. And you don’t have to undergo the knife or scalpel, leaving a long white scar or use stitches to have the moles removed. If you feel self-conscious or just want the mole removed, then talk to us today.

A NEW INNOVATIVE laser treatment – the MonaLisa Touch – is now available for women of all ages who experience vaginal dryness, itchiness, loss of lubrication, burning and painful intercourse. These symptoms are very common after menopause, but symptoms are also experienced by many younger women. Vaginal oestrogen therapy is not always effective or is contraindicated in some women such as those who have had treatment for breast cancer or gynaecological cancer. The MonaLisa Touch has been used for more than five years in Europe and over two years in Australia. It successfully restores collagen, hydration and lubrication to the vagina. Importantly there is no down time, women can immediately return to their normal lives. Symptoms are greatly reduced allowing for a better quality of life. The MonaLisa Touch is now available at our practice, and if you would like to book an appointment or learn more, please call the practice reception.

CLAIRE3608-V3 - Stefan Hair Fashions - CHRIS Stefan Hair Fashions STEFAN01

I WANTED TO GET RID OF THE WARM TONES IN MY BLONDE AND MAKE MY COLOUR A BIT MORE EDGY - IT WAS TOO ‘TEXT BOOK’.

CHRISTIE

TRANSFORMED TRESSES Three Style girls went under the scissors to shake up their look at Stefan Hair Fashions. Here’s how it turned out… IN THE WORDS of Coco Chanel, “a woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life.” Hoping to lose the dull and dry aftermath of Winter in favour of luscious locks in time for the warmer months, three Stylers decided to put this theory to the test. They sought the help of the expert colourists and stylists at Stefan Hair Fashions to experience a hair transformation. From blonde-bombshell highlights and on-trend bobs to sultry auburn locks, they headed to the salon armed with photos of their celebrity hair-spirations. Despite their differing styles, they all agreed on one thing - they left the salon with that rejuvenated, fresh feeling that only a new ‘do can create. What was the main thing you wanted to change? I wanted to get rid of the warm tones in my blonde and make my colour a bit more edgy - it was too ‘text book’. I lacked inspiration in my daily styling routine. Which country/city do you think your new hair would suit? Let’s say, Queenstown (recent getaway destination). The icy climate may have been an inspiration for the matte-ash-blonde appeal I wanted.

MIND OVER BODY From a small space in their local gym, to 8 locations in Brisbane (with more to come), Jade and Tanya Winter chat to us about their booming business, Studio Pilates. WHAT INSPIRED YOU to start your business? We wanted to create a different workout experience, something unique, something totally different – a place where you could totally escape for 40 minutes and concentrate wholly on yourself. How do you stand out? We believe exercise should be a total escape, and we’ve created it that way. That’s why you’ll find yourself doing a workout under chandeliers in all our studios, and also the reason why you won’t find any mirrors, cell phones or clocks. What’s your business philosophy? We believe that exercise should be inspiring, intense, safe and it should be done in style.

Jade and Tanya Winter

What does it mean to workout for the body and mind? You need to concentrate on what you’re doing, focus on your movements and what muscles you are using to perform them, you can’t think about what you’re doing after class or what you need to get at the grocery store, you’re totally in the moment. What’s your key to success? Hard work and unrelenting determination over many years to create great Pilates classes and help our

FOOD+DRINK CAN YOU KEEP A SECRET?

The modern menu is designed to share and create conversation, made with fresh ingredients for the modern palette.

Alleyways don’t usually strike many as the place to hang out but with the intriguing history of Brisbane’s newest venue, Corbett & Claude, Christie Sutherland shares a palatable surprise.

peach and muscatel chutney STYLE STAND OUT…

stylemagazines.com.au

ONCE THE MEETING place of weary commercial travellers that would share stories and form friendships over good food and drink, the location has come into its second life paying homage to its history. Now part of the Corbett & Claude family, the intimate basement space is once again the perfect social convergence for travellers, shoppers and workers alike. Designed by a prominent Brisbane architect who was behind many other iconic buildings, the high-ceilings, arched brick windows, open kitchen and cosy lounge nook create an ambient atmosphere for diners. The modern menu is designed to share and create conversation, made with fresh ingredients for the modern palette. As a menu signature, one of their wood fired pizzas was a must try. The thinly sliced potato with prosciutto and rosemary was the winner from their many options. With garlic pizza bread with rosemary and sea salt, a serving of grilled haloumi with peach and muscatel chutney and a side of Mrs. D’s crispy chicken bites with chipotle aioli, it was hard to not get one of everything. We washed this down with The Barmaid, a cocktail of Ketel One, lime juice, vanilla

and passionfruit pulp, all whilst eyeing off the desserts. It was the waffles with toasted honey ice cream, salted caramel and honeycomb that won out in the end leaving us feeling very satisfied and in a food coma. For a quick taste of the quality and service of the Claude brand, the attached coffee deli, Mr Claude will pep you up for the day ahead. There are plenty of grab and go options, including house-made cold pressed juices, gluten-free nodo donuts and creamy hot chocolates stirred with a New Farm Confectionery hot chocolate stick flavoured with honeycomb and raspberry. Every element, from design to location to the menu, proves that it is a space easy to love. For a well overdue catch up with friends, a break during or after work, or a function for the whole office, it caters to anyone wanting to share not just food, but an experience. Corbett & Claude is a homely haven tucked away amongst the hustle and bustle of city life that is your new meeting place. WITH SPRING COMES new flavours, and there is no better way to celebrate the change in season than at The Barracks. From fresh and zesty Mexican flavours to slow-cooked meats, this foodie hub offers some of the best local produce as they launch their Spring menus. Peasant: Rich and heart-warming This rustic, Spanish restaurant has put a new spin on the traditional Patatas Bravas dish to keep things interesting. A standout was the Rangers Valley beef cheek with celeriac and cauliflower puree and kumera crisps. The meat simply falls apart and melts in your mouth – a must try! The Chelsea Bistro: Light and fresh Nothing says ‘Spring’ quite like the catch of the day. The grilled Kingfish with parsnip puree, broccolini, almonds and dill was light and clean, yet incredibly satisfying. Hogs Breath Café: Meat lovers rejoice This old favourite has made a comeback with

their delicious slow-cooked Byron Bay chilli prime rib with salad and curly fries. This dish is a flavoursome new addition to their menu, which is a meat-eater’s idea of paradise. Los Villanos: Mexican flavours Delivering new-age Mexican food, The Barracks’ newest addition has put their own spin on some classic dishes. The mouth-watering quesadillas, tostadas and corn chips with guacamole and salsa, all use the freshest local ingredients. PAWPAW PERFECTION Rustic, quirky and relaxed, Pawpaw Café show us why they have more to offer than just a great all-day breakfast. FROM THE TEAM behind Green Papaya, Mons Ban Sabai Thai and Picnic Cafe, Pawpaw Café is where modern, tasty and healthy foods collide. Their chefs pay homage to some of the world’s most flavoursome kitchens and know that just because it tastes good, doesn’t mean it has to be bad for you. With a range of daily specials, the menu is always changing and customers will never get bored. Choose from all day breakfast items or build your own breakfast or lunch from sides. Like a soft serve ice cream, but guilt-free, Cocowhip is one of Pawpaw’s big attractions. One of the only stockists in Brisbane, people visit from all over the city to try the 99 per cent fat free coconut water soft serves.

OH, WHAT A KNIFE! Whether cutting or slicing, knives are key to success in the kitchen. Executive Chef share their top picks. WHILE A CHEAP, poorly made or blunt knife makes food preparation difficult, slow and not to mention dangerous task, a great knife is a gift that just keeps on giving. Executive Chef has undoubtedly one of the largest ranges of task-specific and specialty knives available in Brisbane. Not only do they have a wide variety of styles, but also brands – including the world’s elite such as Shun, Global and Messermeister. Some of their top picks as far as styles are concerned, include:

NOT JUST A CAFÉ, PAWPAW CAN TRANSFORM ITSELF INTO A FUNCTION SPACE WITH THREE DIVERSE ROOMS.

Come night time, the menu turns its attention to Asia, with modern flavours inspired by all over the continent including China, Thailand and Indonesia. Not just a café, Pawpaw can transform itself into a function space with three diverse rooms. All of the rooms provide a different vibe and atmosphere and have the capacity to cater for all party sizes, budgets and dietary requirements. Their in-house DJ will set the mood with music and

SLICER KNIFE Ideal for carving and all types of slicing, this elegant knife is characterised by its long yet sturdy blade. This beautiful version from Shun is 25cm long and features the distinctive wavy pattern which is the result of sandwiching an extremely hard ‘super steel’ core between 32 micro-thin layers of polished stainless steel.

CLAY CULTURE Mel Lewis chats to us about how her minimalist nature and love of ceramics led her to create her online store, Antler and Moss. How did Antler and Moss come about? I have always had a love for beautifully crafted tableware, especially artisan ceramics. I have collected ceramics for years and wanted to put together a collection of locally handmade pieces. Tell me about your collaboration with Showroom? It has been a wonderful opportunity to display all the pieces out of their boxes. Ceramics are so tactile and each piece has its own unique character and markings due to the handmade process. How would you describe your brand? Antler and Moss is all about the juxtaposition between edgy antler strength and soft delicate moss. Balancing contemporary with earthy. What inspires your style? My house has become my muse for Antler and Moss. If the

piece works in our home, then it will work for the brand. I’m a minimalist at heart and can feel overwhelmed by too many belongings – the pieces I do invest in are handmade pieces built for longevity that I truly love. Where do you source your products? I work with many Australian artisans to take the essence of their creative work and adapt it slightly to fit the Antler and Moss aesthetic. It’s loads of fun and we end up with something different each time. One tip for incorporating ceramics into your home? Purchase pieces you connect with and you know you will use, and don’t save your favourite pieces for ‘good’ – enjoy them every day and live in the now. READ ONLINE WWW.ANTLERANDMOSS.COM

DEVELOP HOME SWEET HOME The team at Stanford George Developments are determined to create residential spaces that are bigger and better than the rest. BRISBANE’S MARKET HAS become heavily saturated this year with residential apartment buildings. Most designs deprive buyers of precious space, concentrating on more apartments, rather than comfortable living. Owners of Stanford George Developments Luke Bird and George Kezilas are determined to give buyers value for money, creating large residential boutique apartments. “We’re developing and building with owner occupiers in mind,” Luke says. “That means large premium apartments in blue-chip character postcodes which have consistent capital growth and lack competition.” The experience shared between Luke and George will ensure their work is exceptional 92

and unique. Their new development, W81, in Clayfield was started with astute owneroccupiers and savvy investors in mind. George explains these three storey boutique developments are spacious with premium finishes and very low body corporate fees. “Our apartments were designed by an exceptional collection of individuals, the brief to our team was to produce a timeless collection of apartments within an exceptional architecturally designed building,” say Luke and George. A home should be a place for renewal,

ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK Adam Goodrum, the first Australian designer to collaborate with Veuve Clicquot lets us delve into his inspiration behind the limited edition ‘Riddling Stool’. What was your reaction when you first got the call to say Veuve Clicquot wanted to collaborate with you? As you can imagine I was thrilled! It’s such a great privilege and opportunity to be working with Veuve Clicquot, a brand that has innovation and design imprinted in its DNA. I was pretty chuffed to join the list and to be the first Australian designer to work with the brand. What do you think it was about your work that sparked the interest with Veuve Clicquot? Veuve Clicquot has a rich and exciting history with innovation and design, collaborating over the years with some of the biggest names in the business. To be considered alongside these incredibly talented individuals is an honour and extremely humbling. I think that what I have in common with these designers is our constant desire to innovate;

an attribute that I know is valued very highly by Veuve Clicquot. Where did you draw inspiration for the piece? It was when walking through the ancient chalk ‘caves’ that I came across this famous riddling table invented by Madame Clicquot. I was able to observe firsthand the evolution of her design from its origins as a horizontal table through to a compact vertical structure. She started with a horizontal table – it was actually a modified version of her kitchen table – and ended up with racks that stack against the cellar walls. It was a real ‘ah ha’ moment. Do you have a design ritual that you do before sitting down at the drawing board? Normally it involves a lot of thinking at the beginning and gathering of inspiration, followed by

sketching, then creating little models, then even more sketching and more models until I am happy with the final design. Three words to describe the Riddling Stool? Inventive, balanced and functional. If you were to do it again, would you change anything? No, I am very happy with the outcome of the Riddling Stool and I think we have ended up in a great place. It was an amazing journey and I wouldn’t change a thing.

wonderful wallflowers The best way to maximise greenery in a small garden or inner-city abode is to think vertically. SO WHAT IS a vertical garden? Well, simple, it’s a garden that grows vertically. They are generally planted on walls (interior or exterior) to make a small space feel lively, fresh and fun. And the best part is, with careful plant selection and proper irrigation they can be a great lowmaintenance option for small spaces. We spoke with Peter Brennan from Mappin’s Nursery & Aquarium to give us some of his top tips and advice on how to execute a stylish urban vertical garden in Brisbane.

Where can you grow a vertical garden? A vertical garden can be grown anywhere, as long as there is sufficient light and water. Where natural sources of hydration and illumination are not present, artificial solutions can be created. Which plants grow best in a vertical garden? Plants with a cascading form are ideally suited to vertical gardens. However, if adequate maintenance is provided, a wider range of plants can be considered for a vertical garden.

CASCADING PLANT IDEAS IN A SUNNY POSITION: STRING OF PEARLS, BURRO’S TAIL, IVY GERANIUM OR CASCADING ROSEMARY. IN A SHADY POSITION: DEVIL’S IVY, CASCADING IVY, HOYA, SELAGINELLA OR HEARTLEAF PHILODENDRON. What’s one helpful tip you could give to Stylers that want to make their own? The hardest challenge is providing enough water to the garden on a regularly basis, particularly in the Summer months. A good tip for maintaining a vertical garden is to liquid-feed regularly with Seasol. For more advice on how to best set up a vertical garden in your space, come in and ask us! TRAVEL INTO THE UNKNOWN Lucy Stephens has packed her bags and set her sights on a new working life in London. But not before a Summer detour through Europe, of course.

Oia, Greece

“That’s the problem with FOMO – or fear of missing out. It makes you long to do things you see in your social media feeds, and then book it – without a second thought.. ” 96

IT DIDN’T MATTER that the words on the signs strapped to the fencing overlooking the deep canyon below were in Croatian, it was clear what they said; Danger! Keep Out! No Trespassing (or something to that effect). That didn’t seem to be a deterrent to the guide though, who instructed that there were two ways to get around it: climb over or crawl under. I was nearly four weeks into a holiday as a prelude to a move to London, and had spent the last six days on a boat sailing through the Croatian coastline. Now, however, I was strapped into an ill-fitting wetsuit and helmet, and was about to plunge into 16 degree waters and make my way down rapids in the fresh-water Cetina River for three hours. That’s the problem with FOMO – or fear of missing out. It makes you long to do things you see in your social media feeds, and then book it – without a second thought as to how far outside your comfort zone it is. This was one of those times – and it wasn’t the first on this holiday. The first had been in Turkey, which is where my boyfriend and I had started our intrepid travels. After checking in late in the evening in Istanbul,

we were awoken by the mystical sound of the call to prayer coming from the Blue Mosque less than 500 metres from our hotel. Draped in the aroma of exotic spices, and salesmen peddling carpets and pushing trays of different coloured Turkish Delight towards us, we made our way through the busy streets, mosques and bazaars of the city, before heading to the cave town of Cappadocia in the south west. I’d booked this town pretty much based on the pics of hot air balloons weaving through Cappadocia’s unusual rock formations and cave hotels I’d seen on my Insta and Facebook feeds in the months prior. After waking at 4.30am on the morning of our flight, we were taken to where the giant balloons sat perched atop the clifftops, being fed by large, blasting flames. It was only then that I suddenly remembered my fear of heights. How had I not even considered that I may find this absolutely terrifying? It was far too late to think about that now! We both managed to survive the ride – and even enjoy it. Shades of amber and violet cascaded over the mountain peaks we ascended, flowing into the valley below. We continued upwards to OCTOBER15

a maximum height of about 1,500 feet with 40 or so other balloons dotted around us, passengers vying for prime position in their baskets in order to capture the best shots. For the next two and a bit weeks, we island hopped around the Greek Islands; Mykonos where we sipped on expensive cocktails as we lay on expensive sunbeds and watched the beautiful people play in the sun; Paros, where we discovered handmade jewellery and made-to-order leather sandals in the labyrinthine old and new towns; Ios, where shots and sleep-ins were the order of the day, and finally Santorini, the home of couples saying ‘I do’ against a backdrop of white and Insta‑worthy sunsets. Transportation is key when it comes to exploring the Greek Islands, and for us, we found there was no better way to get around than to hire your own ATV, scooter or buggy – of which we did all three. Getting off the beaten track is the best way to find your bearings and immerse yourself in the town’s offerings outside the confines of your hotel. Next up was our cruise along the Croatian coastline, sailing up from Dubrovnik and stopping at various towns and finishing at Split with a largely stylemagazines.com.au

Australian-based group of 18 to 35 year olds on a pirate-looking ship named the ‘Maestral’. This was how I ended up at the Cetina River – located in Omis near Makarska – one of our stops up the coastline. And it was exhilarating stuff! After several steep plunges, navigating numerous narrow embankments (not sure they’d let you do this in Australia), and even jumping off a seven metre cliff face (who said I was scared of heights?), I realised that the whole reason why I embarked on this holiday was to get outside my comfort zone – ‘cos that’s where the fun begins.

I’D BOOKED THIS TOWN BASED ON THE PICS OF HOT AIR BALLOONS WEAVING THROUGH CAPPADOCIA’S UNUSUAL ROCK FORMATIONS AND CAVE HOTELS I’D SEEN ON MY INSTA AND FACEBOOK FEEDS.

CULINARY DELIGHTS

Take a tour with the team at The Great South East to meet the ‘movers and shakers’ of Brisbane’s bar and dining scene. OVER THE LAST few years, Brisbane’s foodie landscape has shifted in a big way – and crowds are flocking from all over Australia to visit the bars and restaurants that are making a mark on the city. Seven years ago, Damian Griffiths embarked on his renaissance of Fortitude Valley’s forgotten back streets. Sofie Formica indulges in some tasty delights at some of Damian’s venues, starting with Alfred & Constance Bar & Restaurant. Next stop is Alfredo’s late night pizzeria next door, Chester Street Bakery on Dogget Street, Doughnut Time and Kwan Brothers. Damian’s latest venture has seen the notorious Bubbles Bath House on Wickham Street reincarnated as the new Les Bubbles restaurant. It’s a classic French Bistro serving one dish only – steak-frites – with bottomless fries! There’s a bar, function room, spa bath and other cheeky clues scattered around that serve as a reminder of days gone by. Luke Kennedy visits some venues from Andrew Baturo. With Libertine restaurant as his first venture, over the proceeding seven years Andrew has opened another three venues – Popolo restaurant, The Gresham Bar, and Heya Bar. All venues are unique, with The Gresham being the only bar with a Heritage Bar license in Queensland. The Gresham has also been recognised nationally 98

having just been awarded ‘Best Bar in Australia’ by the Australian Gourmet Traveller magazine. Alastair McLeod visits West End to meet Bonnie Shearston, the brains behind Brisbane’s newest gastro-pub, London Fields, and The Schulte Family who recently opened The Stores - a marketplace of locally sourced produce and gourmet goodies. Venues like Press Club, Family, Empire and Cloudland have been iconic to Brisbane’s nightlife scene for years, and Jillian Whiting explores the names behind the neon - father, Lewis and son, Raphael Bickell, who are responsible for all of those venues and more. Starting years ago, the Press Club evolved next door to the Empire and continued to grow to envelop the majority of the block and then some. Each new additional venue playing host to their own unique flavour and personality.

Tune in the following week on Sunday October 18 for part two of the culinary quest, as the team take a look back to where it all began. From the Deery’s, and the McGuire’s, to the Samios Family and the Gambaro’s, meet the dining dynasties that have helped shape Brisbane’s foodie culture. Les Bubbles
