day spa deities Claire Parviz heads for a girl’s day of pampering on the Gold Coast with Queensland Weekender’s Kimberley Busteed. Beneath the glitz and glam of the glitterstrip, the V8 Supercars and the glamorous Meter Maids of the Gold Coast, there is a far more relaxing pursuit on offer that’s also worth making a trip down the highway for. Tagging along with Queensland Weekender and the beautiful Kimberley Busteed, we were lucky enough to sample some of the best day spas on the coast. Our first stop was to Peppers Ruffles Lodge and Spa. Situated in the lush surrounds of the Gold Coast hinterland, this relaxation destination boasts of number of treatments alongside its luxurious accommodation and award-winning restaurant. Starting with a complimentary footbath, we were treated to a relaxation massage in the double treatment room, before retreating to the relaxation lounge with a cup of herbal tea while taking in the stunning setting and lofty views of the hinterland. Finishing up, we headed further down the highway to the heart of the GC, Surfers Paradise to the QT Hotel for something ‘freshly picked’. Here they do beauty treatments a little differently, offering a range of beauty and body treatments in a fun, colourful setting that you can choose on arrival – and are sure to leave you with a smile on your face and a bounce in your step. Both Kimberley and I opted for a Twinkle Toes pedicure and Petite Hand Pamper manicure, where our nails were buffed, shaped, and painted with a slick of Zoya polish. Driving further south, it was on to Broadbeach to the Harbour Day Spa, where body and massage therapies

After our Spring face, body and hair package including an almond orange fruit and nut foot scrub and soak, 40 minute massage, facial, shampoo and blow dry and makeup – enjoyed with a glass of bubbly – we were primped and ready to indulge in some of the coast’s more adventurous night time activities.

Urban Edge is taking apartment living to a new level in Brisbane’s inner city, with the construction of the $90 million ‘SkyView’ commencing this month. Located two kilometres from the Brisbane CBD in burgeoning Kelvin Grove, the project consists of three apartment buildings of various scales. The 14-level luxury SkyView will be the final and tallest on the Urban Edge site, with the majority of apartments offering sweeping views of the CBD and the Victoria Park golf course. Pradella’s Development Manager Brett Lentz said SkyView offers buyers the last chance to secure a place in the award-winning inner-city residence. “Urban Edge has recorded strong sales with the first stage Vista already sold out and the second stage, Horizons, more than 90 per cent sold and tipped to sell out shortly,” he said. happy holidays! Clinical psychologist Dr John Barletta suggests how to enjoy the holidays. THE CHRISTMAS SEASON is my favourite time of year. With it comes the end of work for five weeks, holiday parties, people being extra nice to one another, special family meals, not to mention the excitement and surprises of gift-time. Sounds great, and it if all goes to plan, it is, but sometimes things don’t work out like a Hollywood movie. For some, the holiday season comes with high expectations, of both yourself and others. You hope that everything will be endlessly joyous and happy, yet the high expectations can lead people to overextend physically, emotionally, and financially. We all want to relax and have fun during the holidays, so consider the following to survive the silly season. Commit to just one change you could make for a more peaceful and enjoyable holiday season with family and friends. It may mean you

have to organise yourself a little better, or accept things you usually don’t choose to tolerate, or even consider a shift in your values if that enables you to be in a better space. Once you get in the groove of modifying how you think and behave, you are well on the way to replacing old unhelpful habits with more values-driven, goal-oriented ways of living. Although it’s the holiday season, don’t expect miracles (unless you’re on 34th Street), but you may be pleasantly surprised how things turn out when you sharpen your focus, take control of the things you can, are more self-compassionate, accept limitations, and minimise overindulging. Oh, and remember to keep your sense of humour!

Craig Bradbery
urban oasis Hotel Urban Brisbane’s new General Manager Craig Bradbery shares his favourite places for an Urban break – and his top activity picks. While I’m loving exploring my new home town of Brisbane, I’m also very lucky that my two other favourite cities are both relatively close and even better, both have a Hotel Urban so I have a reason to visit regularly. Sydney is where I was born and bred, so I’m always happy to rest my head in one of the oh-so-comfy Urban Snorer beds at Hotel Urban St Leonards. Situated on the edge of the North Sydney business district, it’s a short stroll to Crows Nest’s lively restaurant and bar strip. I usually have dinner at Mumu Grill where the steaks are the juiciest I have ever had, seriously! Then it’s onto The Foxtrot for drinks. This quirky little bar with live music is always full of wonder and surprise. A stunning way to work off all that excess is a walk across
Celebrate The Spirit of Love
the Sydney Harbour Bridge the next morning. In Melbourne, Hotel Urban is located in the happening beachside suburb of St Kilda. I love nothing more than a walk along the St Kilda Pier, particularly when storm clouds are rolling in over the bay. Starting the night with a drink at Mavis Brown’s is always fun, then for dinner I can’t go past a fabulous antipasto platter, pasta and too much red wine at Dog’s Bar, which is a bit of a local institution. After that, well St Kilda is full of weird and wonderful places to keep me entertained! Hotel urban brisbane 345 Wickham st, Spring Hill P 3831 6177 www.hotelurban.com.au

laser hair removal Have you ever considered laser hair removal, but wondered how it works, how long it lasts or whether it’s right for you? We spoke to Australian Skin Clinics, the experts in laser treatments, to shed some light on the topic and learnt that it is faster, safer and even more affordable than you may have thought. How does laser hair removal work? Laser light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair, which affects the hair follicles in a way that prevents future hair growth. Is laser hair removal permanent? Almost! Laser clinics cannot claim full 100 percent permanency, as some small amounts of hair may grow back long term. Regrowth is affected by hormones and other biological factors which vary from person to person. However, where any regrowth does occur, the hair is usually much finer than the original growth and can be maintained with one treatment every six to 12 months. How safe is the treatment? Our staff are required to undergo our own vigorous training course in laser safety and obtain a high level of hands-on experience before 22
they become fully qualified. Technicians are trained to tailor a treatment to your specific skin type and hair colour to ensure treatments are safe and effective. Does treatment take long? With medical-grade Candela equipment, treatment is faster than ever. For example, underarms generally take just five minutes per treatment and can easily be performed during your lunch break with no downtime. Pricing: Underarms $33, Bikini/Brazilian $44, upper or lower legs $134, plus more affordable pricing with this month’s Australian Skin Clinics’ VIP Style Card – 25 percent off laser hair removal and other skin treatments! testament to training Tess Brinums chats to Elisa Haack about her thriving successes at Gravity Zone. Elisa Haack is a Gravity Zone advocate. More than that, she is an informed and passionate health and fitness participant with a new lease on life thanks to Georgina Watson and her Whole Body Vibration technology. 61 year old Elisa had tried yoga and gyms before, but it wasn’t until she discovered the possibilities of gravity plates that she found a form of fitness that embodied her vision and goals. When she realised how much more she could gain from someone helping her who specialised in this technology, she contacted Gravity Zone, after reading a review in Style. A year and a half later, she tells me about the program’s holistic approach to health and fitness and how the program incorporates a careful integration of nutrition and education. “Georgina calculates BMI, lean muscle mass, and body fat levels. She then gives sound and achievable
nutritional advice to help finetune your eating,” says Elisa. “20 minutes on the machine is like 90 minutes in the gym – and anyone can get through 20 minutes,” she laughs. As you get older, you increasingly lose bone density so it’s more important than ever to keep fitness and activity going. Elisa says since starting at Gravity Zone, her core has strengthened, she has better mobility and she is motivated by the women who train with her. “Training with other women gives me a social outlet but it’s also really motivational. We’re all working towards specific goals and there’s no age barrier!” Elisa says her training gives her balance and has spilled over to positively influence other areas of her life. Great results... 27 Dunsmore St , Kelvin Gr ove - 50 inspect ions, sold after the first week wit h six offers!
We took five minutes with local Harcourts real estate agent Bridget Gabites to discuss her year in inner-city real estate and what’s in store for 2014. 2013 has been a big year in real estate; what have been the stand outs for you? It has been a year of change. In the wider market we have gone from a strong buyer’s market to now the complete opposite for sellers with open homes having 20-30 groups of buyers each week! This has led to stronger prices and very quick selling time frames. What have been the highlights of your year? Definitely the market improvement - there is nothing like sitting down with my clients and bringing them five offers on their house. Secondly, for me it has been the referral business I’m now seeing come through from past clients. There is no truer sign of satisfaction than them referring me to friends and family. What changes have you made to your business to handle your market growth? My team has had a huge year of growth, more than doubling the number of properties we sold in 2012. Whilst this has been incredibly exciting, it’s been important to make sure that we continue to concentrate on our clients’ experiences and satisfaction. I’m also excited to have Hayley Caruana join my team. With four years of real estate experience, Hayley offers an additional level of client support to our buyers and sellers. What is your advice for people looking to sell in the near future? We can’t be sure this market surge will continue, particularly while we wait to see what the new federal government’s cost cutting measures will be for the coming years. If you are looking to sell, now is the time. Take advantage of increased buyer demand and reduce the risk of economic climate changes that may present themselves. Do you have a hot lead for buyers for the coming year? While not quite live to the market yet, we have just listed a fantastic unit complex in Kelvin Grove—Evoque Apartments, due for completion in February next year (just in time for the university return). Evoque is a small complex of only 20 units and we are sure it will offer strong investment returns and a beautiful living environment for owneroccupiers and tenants. With three already sold prior to launch, this one is going to sell like hotcakes!
HAYLEY Caruana
Wishing you and your family a happy festive season and a safe and prosperous New Year! Thank you to our clients for your support throughout the year.
Best Wishes, from Bridget, Hayley and the Harcourts Solutions Team.

e.
Kim Duffin, Principal Designer from Sublime Architectural Interiors, talks about relocating your kitchen. When someone says they’re thinking of renovating their kitchen, most are talking about updating the current layout. Relocating this hub is often not considered as it seems too hard or too expensive to make such a major transformation. However, with the kitchen becoming the focal point for most homes, repositioning this key space will help create harmony in your everyday life and add value to your home. A few key reasons to spend time and money relocating your kitchen to another part of your home are: • Creates flow between indoor and outdoor spaces – particularly important living in Queensland. • Increases natural light, which in turn improves the functionality of your kitchen and creates a happy space in which to work, play and entertain.
Sometimes relocating a kitchen is not possible; however, it’s worth engaging a professional to provide you with some advice about your options. You’ll need to consider such things as whether structural changes are needed (with the help of an engineer), where services are located (i.e. water, electrical, ducting options for extraction fans), and how existing flooring might be affected by such a dramatic change. With the right guidance, you can take advantage of the space within your home to create a hub that will improve your lifestyle and protect your investment for years to come. the B105 round up A personal Christmas message from Abby... Too many sick kids from Brisbane and all over Queensland will spend this Christmas in hospital. But it’s a beautiful thing to know that we can all do something to make their lives brighter during this time. Over the past 19 years the B105 Christmas Appeal has raised more than 11 million dollars to purchase vital medical equipment at the Royal Children’s Hospital. Each year, it breaks our hearts personally hearing from parents whose child has had to use the hospital with a similar story to tell – that they never thought it would be theirs. Traditionally our last show of the appeal is from the gardens of the hospital where we get the opportunity to meet the families, but it’s the faces from the windows of the children that are too sick to leave their room which reminds us why we do this. We have the chance to give these children a better future. From the bottom of our hearts, Labby, Stav and I wish to thank

antique ardour The ceremony of celebrating an engagement with a vintage or antique ring has been a centuries-old tradition for royal families and celebrities alike. Sometimes a ring is passed down from previous generations or is perhaps a new acquisition; however, with another’s love story in its background, the history behind a vintage piece adds to its beauty. Each piece in the Toowoomba and Brisbane Lannah Dunn boutiques is selected for its exquisite beauty, lively history and the joy it brings to the wearer, ensuring it is loved as passionately now as when it was first born. The earliest of diamond cuts include the single cut diamond, which exists in few pieces today. The rose-cut however, is supremely different from the brilliant cut and appropriately named as the cut is designed to appear like a rose. Antique diamond rings were often designed to sit flat on the finger. Most common in antique jewels is the old brilliant cut. Versions of the brilliant cut have been around since the 1700s and evolving over that time to the brilliant cut
of today. Known as the old-mine (cushion) and European cut, these diamonds have a flat culet at the base of the stone. Mistakenly, it is sometimes thought to be a hole in the diamond; however this is one of the distinguishing characteristics. Old-cut diamonds were all cut by hand and quite romantically, cut especially to sparkle at their brightest under candlelight! The Elan collection at Lannah Dunn is a collection based on original antique designs, modified to sit a little higher. The most important thing to remember when selecting your engagement piece is to purchase from someone you trust and to purchase something you love. ond is the old-cut diam Shop 7, Tattersall’s Arcade t to sparkle Cnr Queen & Edward Sts, Brisbane romantically cu P 3221 1588 elight. 175 Margaret St, Toowoomba most under candl P 4632 8670 www.lannahdunn.com

skin fatigue – is it real?
shop local for christmas
importance of planning
Yes, it’s a thing. If you suspect your antiageing products have stopped working, it may be because your skin cells are lacking energy. Research reveals that over time, our cells get sluggish, gradually run out of steam and stop responding to the anti-ageing ingredients we feed them. Energy levels have now been found to progressively slow down between the ages of 20 and 60. Cellular Bionergetic findings conclude this has implications for our anti-ageing skincare routines. On a cellular level, our skin loses: • Natural barrier protection; • Water on a deeper level; • Ability to naturally remove waste and heal. All of these are related to poor cellular metabolism and make us look older. We can however, actually force the cells to repair by creating a controlled wound and shocking the body into healing. These procedures are performed by Skin Practitioners. Also ask about which anti-ageing heroes like pentapeptides and niacinamides are best for you.
Like most, I treat my Christmas shopping like a military exercise: get in, get out and make sure no one gets left behind. But this year I am putting my money where my mouth is and loving my local retailers. This isn’t just a marketing ploy or even a bandwagon that a multi-national finance company might jump on briefly. It’s because I value the independents and the variety and choice they offer. They make our cities interesting. Without little shops that carefully select and support other small businesses that lovingly create unique and special items produced in hundreds not thousands, Christmas just becomes about ‘stuff’. By choosing to buy my presents locally, I’m choosing to avoid horrendous parking queues at busy shopping malls; I’m choosing great customer service from someone who often owns the business and cares that I’m happy with my purchase, and I’m choosing to make Christmas personal again. Love your local this Christmas and put some heart back into giving!
A successful building project begins with proper planning. Along with great building design and construction, an understanding of local, state and regional plans will ensure your project does not get tied down in planning ‘red tape’. • Your land classification under your local authority Planning Scheme will provide a clear indication of what you can do with a property. • Property overlays are mapped through Brisbane City Plan 2000, which indicates development constraints such as land subject to housing character, flooding, waterway corridors, heritage and conservation regulations. • Local and Neighbourhood Plans provide a specific set of planning provisions within City Plan 2000. These plans can alter the type of application required for particular uses and override other parts of the planning scheme. • Planning is just as important in the building of a project as design itself. Although you can do this on your own, it’s recommended you employ the services of a recognised Town Planner. Good planning leads to better building outcomes!

buying before auction
hereditary varicose veins
a simple facelift
Auction clearance rates have improved substantially this year – this shows buyers want to secure their next property before the market really takes off. If you want to buy prior to auction, here are my tops tips. Tell the agent you’re interested and ask if the vendor is willing to sell privately. If the agent gets a flood of offers after the first open it’s important to make yourself known as you might not get the chance to make an offer. Let the agent know you have pre-approved finance. Offer a price that is close to your walkaway figure. Vendors will only entertain the idea of selling prior if a premium price is put forward. As with all negotiations, the vendors will assume your first offer isn’t your best. Waive your right to a cooling off period to show you’re a serious buyer. Do more than a verbal offer. Show you’re serious by signing the contract and attaching a cheque for the deposit. Good luck!
A common question at our clinic is, “Do varicose veins run in families?” Yes, unfortunately this is true - if one parent has varicose veins then you have an increased risk. If both parents are affected then you have a 90 percent risk! Technically it is not varicose veins that run in families but venous disease affecting the vein walls, which damages the valves in the leg veins and in turn leads to the development of varicose veins. So not all members of the family may actually have visible varicose veins but if their leg veins are incompetent and causing venous reflux, then they might be developing problems such as: Aching, swollen or itchy legs; Nocturnal cramps and restless leg syndrome; Eczema, brown staining or hardening of the skin. If a family member suffers from varicose veins and you have any of these symptoms, then it might be recommended that you have assessment of your legs with venous ultrasound.
One of the simplest ways to improve your appearance is to enhance the look of your teeth. A smile enhancement is often less costly and less invasive than a facelift and more lasting than other cosmetic procedures. Clean, bright and beautiful teeth can give you a youthful appearance. This transformation can be as simple as tooth whitening or a procedure to increase the height of worn-down teeth to restore a youthful smile. But did you know cosmetic dentistry may also improve the health of your teeth and body? Veneers or crowns can immediately provide whiter, straighter teeth and may also reinforce their structure to help prevent future problems. Replacing missing teeth with a bridge, implant or denture allows for better function of chewing and speech. Treating your gum disease removes a source of chronic infection from your body, and can reduce your chance of heart disease. Research shows that a healthy and attractive smile makes you appear more intelligent, successful, and friendly. Now there’s something to smile about!

colours for healing
festive frolicking
ashes to ashes
As mankind is moving into the 21st Century, the use of light technology will be further understood and implemented into our daily lives. Connecting with colour has a wonderful effect and can be instrumental in creating good health, harmony and inner well being. It has been documented that people who have suffered from illnesses such as cancer need “rainbow light” for healing to bring balance to the body. Other products that approach a holistic viewpoint like Aura Soma (which is based upon crystals and natural plant extracts that connect to Chakras for healing and can be applied to the body) is a way of discovering one’s spiritual journey in life. By way of consultation, you select four out of 110 bottles, which can relate to personality traits and lead to a powerful transformation in your life. You can also utilise Colour Therapy through channelled art works that contain “Positive Chi” and Reiki can also help facilitate the healing process for balance within the body by tapping into what is known as “universal energy”.
For those of us that work in events, there is much work to be done to deliver on many Christmas wishes. We’re certainly seeing some interesting trends developing for end of year celebrations that I believe will continue through to 2014. Gatsby or gold glamour themed parties in particular continue to be a strong trend, so stock up on your feathers and flapper accessories. More than ever, workplace teams are excited about the idea of combining an activity with their function. This can be anything from a fun game of putt putt with beverages to cooking classes, laser shooting or medieval archery. Our cocktail stations are also popular as we can set them up anywhere around the venue – delicious! As hectic as this time of year can be, we thrive on the chaos of Christmas! If we could dress up as elves to really get into the spirit of Christmas, I think our team would be in heaven. But for fear of being called crazy, we might stick with the uniforms.
“Win Brisbane and Australia will win the Ashes”, was my prediction. To walk the footsteps of every other privileged Ashes cricketer is an absolute delight. Our sport’s greatest tradition began from a thrilling first victory over England by Australia. A mock obituary in an English paper, after Australia had won at the oval, stated how ‘cricket had died and its body would be cremated and taken to Australia’ on their scheduled tour shortly after. Now the score is 31 all, with five series drawn! We have a rebuilding Australian team with a coach capable of improving their culture and it seems to be working. Batsmen scoring big and important hundreds and fearsome bowlers producing to their potential after many years. Mitchell Johnson has finally done it against England and they looked intimidated and terrible. From confident, experienced favourites to technically deficient nervous wrecks, this Ashes series has turned remarkably. Australia’s desire to compete should get them over the line, now they have won a big moment or two. Confidence is difficult to stop when it accompanies grit and talent. A great start deserves an even better finish.

Craig Smith from Fruition Hair showcases his latest hair collection at the iconic Ministry of Sound in London. Fruition Hair’s Craig Smith has made headlines for a different type of ‘Superstylin’ for Alter Ego Italy’s 25th Anniversary and International Hair Show, London Calling, at the Ministry of Sound. The Wilston-based hairdresser is the Global Ambassador for Alter Ego Italy, a leading hair product brand, and he took with him to London his Executive stylist Julia Dunleavy to present his A/W 2014 collection, ArtHair. The collection features four key trends:
Punk Prophetic, Sport Luxe Redux, 50s Glamour and Satirical Seventies, as well as his most recent hair collection, Kyoto. The event played host to more than 300 guests from around the world, and Craig said it was an honour to launch his collection in at the iconic London venue. “Ministry is an institution in London and to be on that stage doing hair was off the charts! There’s an incredible energy that seeps out of the walls and yes – the

For Elaine Emmanuel of Emmanuel & Cox, her foray into the world of jewellery design was fuelled by a love for accessories and the desire to find the perfect piece. Initially Elaine’s craft was self-taught, re-working her own jewellery pieces and creating simple bracelets, necklaces and earrings. Eventually, Elaine wanted to learn more about the craft, enrolling at the Brisbane Institute of Art, where her now business partner, Daniel Cox was her teacher. Daniel’s entry in the world of jewellery was via sculpture and painting at university, but after dabbling in jewellery, he was hooked. The pair worked separately on their own independent labels creating commissioned pieces, before joining forces to create Emmanuel & Cox earlier this year. “After some time and after many suggestions from surrounding friends to merge our creative minds, we finally decided to join forces. It seemed inevitable; we have always been able to collaborate so well.” Elaine says.
Daniel says the key to their partnership is communication. “It’s such an intimate process when it comes to creativity,” he says. “Starting off on the same page is important, but most of the time it ends up like kids in a candy store going ‘and we could do this…and what about this…what about that!’” Their latest range, ‘Abira’ is their second collection, drawing inspiration from an eclectic mix of influences, including nature, travel, history and culture, and featuring a curious fusion of insect designs, raw gemstones, bones, recycled acrylics, leather and recycled silver. All pieces are hand-created in their Stones Corner studio, that for the most part of the year, acts as a teaching hub where the duo impart knowledge of silversmithing, bone carving, and hand forging to a throng of inspired students. Come December 7, the studio will convert into a dedicated retail space for two weeks, where the duo will sell to the public, as well as raise money for the ‘Love Your Sister’ campaign. www.emmanuelandcox.com

While other children dreamt of monsters, Jane’s childhood dreams were more a reflection of her real life then a figment of the imagination. Growing up in Papua New Guinea, many of Jane’s memories are steeped in the fear of what was hiding in the rainforests and rivers, in particular the crocodiles her dad hunted. Jane has since reflected these childhood fears, experiences and memories within her jewellery designs. In particular her “Rock around the croc tonight” piece (pictured) features a crocodile tooth, garnets to symbolise the eyes of the crocodiles, lava to remind her of the volcanic disturbances and a children’s watch face to represent the smash hit of the 50s. As a designer and artistic aficionado, and with a slew
of art and design credentials under her belt (including a Ph.D in art history), Jane found comfort in art, history, and the study of shamanism and spent extensive time travelling and exploring other cultures including India, South Africa, Europe, Russia and Papua New Guinea. The original incentive for her designs came from frustration with the lack of affordable and interesting jewellery available, and a desire to fill the market gap. With a personal memory behind each design, Jane has created a collection that stands apart from the crowd, and dares you to embrace your fears and fantasies. By Lucy Stephens. For Brisbane restaurateur PJ McMillan, his love of pizza was borne out of childhood memories of Friday night visits to his local pizzeria, where they served up unpretentious woodfired pizza with a side of cool beats in his hometown of Dunedin, New Zealand. It’s a passion that flourished through to adulthood, and with the acquisition of the space beside Harvey’s (formerly inhabited by CJ’s Pastas), his passion has culminated in his newest venture: Tinderbox Kitchen. With a few masterful strokes, including the installment of a column-like beech pizza oven, the affable chef/owner’s latest offering is a pareddown approach to food, with a menu offering both shared options, dishes from the oven, salads and the star of the show; woodfired pizzas.
Heading in on its first night open in the week, Tuesday, the vibe is positively bustling. Young women giggle perched on a window seat among tables of well-dressed older couples, all enjoying cocktails, the spot’s extensive Queensland only beer list, and pared-back chow. We shared the lamb main with toasted almonds, green olives and a slick of date puree, and the restaurant’s namesake: the Tinderbox pizza - Mooloolaba prawns, chilli, zucchini, fior de latte, oregano and cherry tomatoes. It’s an honest serving of premium produce, drinks and ambience that transcends generations. But you wouldn’t expect anything less from PJ’s kitchen. stirring up the competition
After struggling with anxiety, depression, and an eating disorder, Nicole Joy has found her inner self-confidence and is determined to help others do the same. With food previously a guilty pleasure, Nicole has focused her energy on turning it into a positive by releasing a cookbook, Dessert for Breakfast which includes personal stories that she hopes will inspire others. Nicole’s recipes are gluten-free, dairy-free, refined sugarfree, and most importantly, regret-free desserts you can eat for breakfast!
Nico Colic from The Laneway has won the title of “Brisbane’s Best Cocktail Bartender” after a heated competition at Pony Dining on Eagle Street Pier last month. Over three weeks, nine bartenders competed in a series of rounds featuring key ingredients and spirits. Perryn Collier from Papa Jacks placed second, Chris Denman from Fourth Wall placed third, and Cameron Pirret from host Pony came in fourth. Nico took home not only ultimate bragging rights but also a $2,000 prize.

monthly grind Campos Coffee Director John Ronchi shares some stories behind his favourite brew. For those of you that have attended one of our cupping sessions, you would know that how coffee is processed plays a large role in the overall cup quality. Coffee from the same country, region, co-operative, or even the same plantation, does not mean that it is of the same quality. One of the challenges for the roaster, is ensuring that the green beans ordered, is what is received. You may have seen green bean coffee sacks used as decoration in café fit outs. In recent years, the bags have become more and more decorative, but they play an important role. They enable the roaster to trace back the origin of the 66
coffee, and in our case, ensure the coffee arrives in good order. For several years we have had our bags custom printed. This is not merely a marketing exercise, but rather to ensure that the coffee we have paid a higher price for, is in fact the coffee shipped to us. For many of our producers, we pay a premium to have the coffee specially prepared and specially these ziplock grain bags packed in Grain Pro bags. These ziplock grain use bags use hermetic storage to preserve aroma, hermetic storage to preser ve colour and freshness of the coffee beans. aroma, colour and freshn ess www.camposcoffee.com.au

SUNKISSED SUMMER
feat ure
bronzed beauty
Get your glow on this summer with an organic spray tan from endota spa. WITH the party season in full swing, the best accessory you can invest in for your next cocktail do or poolside barbecue is a natural, sun-kissed glow! Gone are the days of baking in the sun; the healthiest way is to fake it, and an organic tan is even better! You can walk in and out in 10 minutes and have the most radiant, natural looking full body tan. In order to get the best, even-looking spray tan, there are a few prep steps we recommend. Exfoliate – a scrub and glow mitt is great for this. Slew away all dead skin to ensure the tan doesn’t stick to the drier parts of your body. Hydrate – ensure that you are moisturising diligently morning and evening before your
appointment – this will assist with the even application of your tan. TAN - On the day of your spray tan do not apply any moisturiser or deodorant, as this will cause the tan to not absorb into the skin properly, or have an affect on the desired colour. The depth of the colour can be enhanced by sleeping in your tan. Cleanse – Rinse off your bronzer with a soap-free body wash. Aftercare – moisturising daily will help your tan last longer. Endota Spa Fortitude Valley has its very own organic spray tan to give you a great summer glow in minutes.

feel gorgeous all summer long! Brazilian Beauty loves the warmer months. Like all good things, making the most of summer takes effort. Here are our top tips for a gorgeous summer: Fake it, don’t bake it! For even coverage and perfectly bronzed skin, a spray tan is the only way to go. Ask for a green base to avoid that unnatural orange look, and make sure you use an organic product to avoid allergic reactions and flare-ups. Brazilian Beauty uses Vani-T, which fades naturally and hydrates the skin. Cover up! Sunscreen is your friend. Treat your skin with all the love it deserves and always make sure you have some kind of SPF protecting you from the hot summer sun. The Australian Skin Institute’s Mineral Foundation range is SPF15+ and well suited to warmer climates. 84
Keep Hydrated! Your skin will dry out with the longer days and increased sun exposure that occurs during summer. Make sure you drink plenty of water and take a few extra steps to keep your skin supple and firm. Use a proven moisturiser, preferably one with an SPF, such as ASI’s All Day Hydration face moisturiser and The Ultimate range for all over body hydration. Smooth Skin for the Win! Shaving is only a temporary fix. To keep your skin smoother for longer, glide into Brazilian Beauty for professional waxing. If you want to be hair free forever, ask about IPL permanent hair removal. We can help you be silky smooth and super confident during summer! Brazilian Beauty www.brazilianbeauty.com.au

Start spreading the news; Brooklyn Beauty Bar on James Street is mixing things up with a new service in store. Brooklyn Beauty Bar in the Valley is adding literal meaning to the word bar, with owner Brooke Jesberg adding an alcohol licence to its array of beauty services and treatments. Located in the bustling entertainment and shopping district of James Street and open late three nights a week, Brooke says the idea to add a cocktail bar came about after noticing clients coming in after a long day at work and hanging out for something to take the edge off their day. The salon was also welcoming parties of women – and men – who were getting ready pre-wedding or birthday party, and thought she could assist in getting the celebrations underway at Brooklyn. “Our clients will come with friends and combine
grooming with socialising, which, when you think about it, is the ultimate in multi-tasking and perfect for people who are time-poor,” Brooke says. With an intimate fitout harking back to the period of the glamorous 1940s in New York City, guests can sip Champagne or even a mojito and listen to upbeat jazz classics as they get waxed, spray tanned, manicured and more. And, at the end of the treatment, Brooke hopes that clientele will leave the premises refreshed and looking fab – and like they’ve just taken a bite out of the Big Apple.

Best hotel in the world? “Sofitel Melbourne on Collins. Outstanding views and first-class service.” Who would you most like to serve? “Ricky Gervais. I’d like to find out what makes him tick.”

If it were a person, the new Pullman Brisbane King George Square Hotel would be Cate Blanchett. A true-blue Aussie who, despite a bit of five-star treatment is firmly in touch with the past. “Bricks and mortar don’t go anywhere but the brand changes,” says general manager Grant Parnell. “The hotel has a rich history and we want to remember that as well as rejuvenating it.” The Pullman achieves a mix of the contemporary and the retrospective: its KG Bar is one of the top cocktail spots in Brisbane, while nearby a history wall will soon display photos of the hotel from when it opened in 1971. A glass cabinet displaying RM Williams clothing will also be erected. Another of the Pullman’s harmonious dichotomies
is that it unites two separate hotels: the five-star Pullman and four-star Mercure. Guests check-in together in the entrance lobby and are then shown to their chosen accommodation. “It’s the first time in Australia the two brands have combined,” says Grant, who, 18 months ago took on the job of rebranding the hotel from The Sebel and Citigate. He shares what he’s most excited about: G20 Australia 2014. “The hotel has always had a history of political life but this event has put Brisbane on the world map,” he says. Grant has a passion for ensuring guests have the best travel experience possible. “I spend a lot of time in the lobby talking to guests,” he says. “Everyone has a story to tell and it is that personal contact that makes people feel relaxed and want to come back to the Pullman – whether they are international guests or locals who remember the Crest.” Pullman Brisbane King George Square Hotel CNr Ann and Roma Sts P 3229 9111 www.pullmanhotels.com
