I love the quote that Claire has on her Ed’s note (pg 8) about finding ‘the one’ in oneself. It tickled my fancy ‘coz we’re always told it’s good to ‘love yourself’, which I totally agree with, and I also think it’s imperative to spoil yourself. Whether you embrace Valentine’s Day or not, it’s a great excuse to treat yourself, your best friend or the love of your life. So here’s some ways to make ‘the one’ very happy ... long-distance relationships Clinical Psychologist Dr John Barletta explores how to nurture a long-distance relationship. EASE OF TRAVEL and an international world view has witnessed an increase in long-distance relationships. These relationships, whether romantic, workmates, or friends, all face challenges, require commitment, hard work and creative ways to keep flourishing. Be confident: Those who view their long-distance relationship as a positive experience stay together. Establish trust and openness: Discuss values and beliefs, and negotiate healthy boundaries. Romantic relationships need to have clear discussions of expectations regarding fidelity. Sitting at home imagining your loved one is out with someone else is not helpful for your wellbeing or relationship. Stay connected: Social media enables instant communication with loved ones. Skype, Facebook, instant messaging, and sites like YouTube and Flickr make it easy to connect, share news, photos
and videos. They also inject some fun and lightheartedness into the relationship. Communicate: Email, texting and letter-writing are great ways to maintain contact. Handwritten letters retain an air of intimacy. Included in these letters can be reminders such as clippings from newspapers and sentimental mementos. Sending or receiving gifts (other than for birthdays or anniversaries) show you are thinking of one another. Distance hinders the day-to-day routine of a relationship with a romantic partner, family, or friends. Long-distance relationships are certainly a challenge but not an insurmountable one. They require different care, thought, and planning, but can be fulfilling and worth the effort they will inevitably require. STYLE
man
Alex Cox-Taylor | 33 | Owner and director of Urban Climb Indoor Climbing Gym
While this rock climbing gym owner embraces a classic cool aesthetic, he isn’t afraid to mix it up and take his style to new heights.
“i look for classic styles that work for me rather than follow the latest fashion.”
How would you describe your style? European, not overly polished but still smart. A balance of smart casual. How do you dress for work? Urban Climb is a relaxed environment but I need an element of formality. Depending on the time of year, trousers and a t-shirt or shorts and a shirt. Do you follow any fashion rules? I look for classic styles that work for me rather than follow the latest detail of what’s in fashion. What’s your fashion mantra? A good style should see you through all types of occasion. Your most indulgent fashion purchase? No one item, but I do tend to go on shopping sprees a few times a year, usually whilst overseas. Your favourite Brisbane men’s store? It depends on what they have in and what works. Scotch and Soda, Ben Sherman or possibly some of the more boutique stores.
Your favourite clothing store outside of Brisbane? Nomad in San Francisco, and Allsaints in London has some solid staples. What do you think is the most important thing for women when it comes to dressing? Don’t overdo it. Simple elegance. Do you prefer…. Boxers or briefs? Boxers Smart suits or cool casual? I would lean towards cool casual. But a smart suit for the right occasion can make you feel bulletproof. Short back and sides or a little scruffy? A little scruffy I guess. Where can we find you….. On a Sunday morning? At the Gunshop Café or at the Burrow in West End. On a Saturday night? Either Cobbler or Lychee Lounge, again in West End…. On your next holiday? April I will be in San Francisco and at the music festival in Coachella. I would also like to go to Buenos Aires.

Get Active, Eat Bread Brumby’s Bakery is on a mission to change the way Australian families think about bread. Many fad diets advocate avoiding bread like the plague. But no bread means either having to look for other sources of complex carbohydrates, or going hungry … Brumby’s are determined to set the record straight, highlighting the important role bread can play in a balanced, active lifestyle. The iconic bakers have launched a Get Active range of loaves, boasting health benefits such as including 10 percent of the recommended daily intake of fibre for digestive health, more protein per slice than an average egg, and bread that is low GI for sustained energy. Brumby’s new campaign aims to educate customers through colour coding packaging, description panels on bread bags, in store information cards on all products and a new informative website. Brumby’s has teamed up with iconic Aussie, Matthew Hayden as the brand’s new ambassador. Their mutual passion for the sustainability of Australian land and the health and wellbeing of Australian families makes for a winning partnership. Matt Hayden is proud to support Brumby’s. “I’ve grown up with Brumby’s, just like most Aussies have,” he says. After retiring from cricket, he decided to dedicate his life encouraging everyone to enjoy the benefits of an active and healthy lifestyle and one that is sustainable and family oriented.

Not only is Brumby’s changing the face of Aussie bread, it’s also making back to work easy. Brumby’s new bruffins are sure to be the talk of the town in Brisbane’s best brekky blogs. Insatiable demand
increase in Brisbane property values in the last 12 months
28.9% increase in homes sold compared with 2012*
Why market experts predict Brisbane as the place to buy property in 2014. Even if you aren’t keeping an eye on the Brisbane property market it’s hard not to notice just how quickly the “sold” stickers have been going up recently. We’ve seen this most recently with the sale of 2/22B Hampson St in Kelvin Grove: our latest property to sell in only a matter of days with multiple offers coming in. We have now reached a period where property demand is significantly outstripping supply. My open homes in the past few months have been averaging 10-15 groups per open when only six months ago we were lucky to get 2-3 groups through. With increasing demand comes increasing prices and Brisbane has had a 5.1 percent increase in property values over the past 12 months; more than 3 percent of this increase occurred in the last three months of 2013. The number of homes sold in 2013 peaked 28.9 percent higher than in 2012. With this increase also comes a significant
decrease in supply – the number of properties on the market is currently at its lowest level since March 2011. What does this all mean for the Brisbane market in 2014? While we can’t predict the future, we can say that this combination of rising demand but limited supply (along with the general improvement in consumer sentiment) has provided the ideal environment for owners in Brisbane to sell and see strong results. If you’re interested in finding out what this all means for your property or if you would like some advice on purchasing in this market, don’t hesitate to contact me for more a more in-depth analysis. Small expansion Fiat’s newest small car offers sophisticated styling without the price tag.
stylemagazines.com.au
The competitive small car market continues to shape the Australian motoring landscape, with the launch of the Fiat Punto by the Fiat Chrysler Group. Available in a spacious five-door hatchback bodystyle in three specification levels – Pop, Easy and Lounge and with an array of customisable extras – the Punto cements the company’s culture of creating mould-breaking small cars that lead the pack. The Punto epitomises contemporary Italian styling combined with practicality, affordability, and a sporty feel. Starting at just $16,000 for the ‘Pop’ model, the car will appeal to customers who are looking for an affordable car, but aren’t prepared to compromise on style or sophistication. Spacious, sleek interiors boast denim inserts on seats, a six-speaker radio/cd/MP3 audio system,
with steering wheel controls and Bluetooth phone connectivity, while the exterior emits a sporty aesthetic. The Pop model, while being entry level is still well equipped, and in addition to the above, features six airbags, start/stop system and daytime running lamps. The top shelf ‘Lounge’ model has a luxe interior, complete with leather-wrapped steering wheel, stylish sports seats, driver’s knee airbag as well as climate control air conditioning, ambient lighting and rain sensing windscreen-wipers. And for those who like to match their car to their favourite outfit, the car comes in a myriad of stylish paint options – from ambient white and pipeline blue as well as a metallic palette featuring turquoise through to ruby red. www.fiat.com.au

On a roll Having worked with leading national brands, Brissie-born Julieanne Worchurst joined Retail Food Group as Brumby’s National Marketing Manager in 2013. She shares what’s in store in 2014 and the lessons she’s learned in business. What do you think makes Brumby’s so successful? In this day and age, the culture has shifted from convenience to being conscious about what we eat. People are avoiding preservatives and additives where they can. Our breads have always been preservative and additive free, and baked fresh in store daily from scratch. What’s your favourite Brumby’s item? Our brand new Chicken, Avocado and Hollandaise Bruffin. The ingredients are baked and sealed inside our Swiss soy and linseed muffin - so no egg or sauce will run down your arm! What’s new in 2014 for the company? I’m pleased to have our new Bread Ambassador on board – Matthew Hayden. He’s such a top Aussie bloke. There are some other exciting things in the works so Brumby’s is the space to watch! Do you have a business mantra you follow? Two decades of managing
marketing programs has equipped me with an understanding of the challenges franchisees face, but you never stop learning. I like to take something new away from any situation that arises - whether it’s good or bad, it’s still a lesson. What do you like to do in your down time? Being based at Scarborough and working out of offices on the Gold Coast means my husband and I enjoy stand-up paddle boarding on some amazing waterways. And if I can’t be on the water, I like to take the dogs for a walk along the shoreline. What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? Whether its work or personal life, know where it is you want to go and know what steps you need to get there, because success is rarely by accident. www.brumbys.com.au

fabulous and fresh for 2014 Tonsure Hair Design welcomes new faces and a fabulous new look for 2014. Tonsure Hair Design – one of Hendra’s most beloved salons – has been Julie Hay’s personal enterprise for 25 years. To mark the milestone, she thought a celebration was in order in the form of a complete transformation for the Gerler Road salon. Thanks to a sophisticated refurbishment, the salon now sports sleek floating benches and full length salon mirrors as well as a Colour Bar, where you can sit while your colour is processing. You can even plug in your laptop and do some work while you wait. Combined with their quarter-century anniversary, Julie says she is also excited for what this new year will bring with a new look and fresh faces to the team.

Julie Hay (far right) is thrilled to welcome some fabulous new stylists to the salon.
“Our young stylists have added a new energy to the salon and I love it”, Julie said. The salon has always encouraged clients to come back time and time again and even has up to three generations of the same family in the salon at one time. It’s this community focus that makes Tonsure’s a unique salon experience. Whether it’s Julie’s home-baked Christmas cake through December, the heart shaped chocolates with Merlo coffee on Valentine’s Day, or a salon walk for charity, it’s the extra effort and personal touch combined with a wealth of experience that makes the salon one that you want to return to. aussies on a roll for 2014 Cricketing icon Ian Healy hopes to see a repeat of the Australian cricket team’s success play out in other sports in 2014. With the Ashes tucked safely in Australia’s trophy cabinet after a stunning dominance of England’s cricketers, what else might be in store for sports fans this year? The Brisbane Roar are doing it again; we all probably expect the Brisbane Lions to take further steps towards their glory days of the early 2000s and the Broncos will be high profile but under pressure to get it right, as they endeavour to snare the services of the game’s best in Cam Smith from next year, on top of Ben Barba’s signing this year. The Queensland Reds look in great shape, so let’s hope they turn the clock back two years as well. Could this be the year of the Bledisloe?
Bachelor Profile
There are several similarities between the sudden emergence of the cricketers and the potential of the Wallabies, which allow me to entertain this ludicrous idea! Both are coached by men who have the knack of enabling talent to become performance. Darren Lehmann and Ewen McKenzie instil confidence with honesty and leading by example; they are good blokes who don’t pussyfoot with anyone. Higher ranking administrators, performance departments, the media and their superstars all get treated the same - and not only do they need that; they love it. For that reason, the Wallabies might just do it in 2014 against the mighty All Blacks!

Building connections This Bulimba local is helping small businesses harness big business power. WHEN Rebecca Lawrence moved to Brisbane at the height of the GFC, she was leaving behind a tenyear career of marketing a large Blue Chip, multi-national company across Asia Pacific. Using her extensive knowledge, she was determined to start up her own consultancy and focus on assisting small businesses. But, it didn’t take long to realise many local businesses were battling to keep their heads above water. “Despite great ideas, service and execution, many businesses were struggling to get customers through the door,” she says. “They were extremely cost sensitive, and didn’t know where to start with communicating their brands, and all the obvious options seemed terrifyingly expensive and too difficult for those without experience. Working collaboratively just seemed the natural answer.” Bulimba Business is the result of Rebecca’s field work and offers local business people support, marketing
w
channels and networking opportunities. You don’t need to be a member; casual visitors are welcome at the monthly Bulimba Business Meetings, but membership also offers marketing exposure through joint initiatives and projects such as her Love Your Local Campaign. “As a small business person myself, I know how hard it is to wear the many hats business owners are expected to juggle seamlessly, usually with next to no training or experience,” smiles Rebecca. “Bulimba Business aims to assist business owners by helping them form strong relationships with local experts who can help, recognising that if we all support fellow businesses we are investing directly into our community and building a strong local economy together. It’s all about getting bigger and better and sharing the love!”
Rebecca Lawrence enjoys connecting small businesses.

The key feature of the adjoining spaces is the booth seating that is matched with an illuminated dining table made from a piece of Caesarstone’s Concetto range.
An amazing transformation has breathed new life into this New Farm home.
Urban Renewal Current HIA Australian Kitchen Designer of the Year, Kim Duffin of Sublime Architectural Interiors presents his latest transformation project. Believe it or not this home (pictured) was once a derelict set of flats in New Farm, but an amazing transformation breathed new life into its tired facade and interior. The owner engaged me to design the living spaces in the home so that flow and connectivity would remain throughout. In conjunction with the owner’s overall vision for the home, my main focus was on the kitchen, dining and outdoor spaces as the client advised that she entertained clients and friends regularly, so needed this space to perform many tasks. The chef required a larger-than-normal oven and a Smeg 750mm underbench oven fit the brief perfectly. An island in the kitchen would form the centrepiece and hold the whole space together. The key feature of the adjoining spaces is the booth seating that is matched with an illuminated dining table made from a piece of Caesarstone’s Concetto range. This table is fully backlit and colour controlled with an app that can be used on your iPhone or iPad. This feature gives the space luxury and diversity and the built-in outdoor barbecue provides continuity and flow, which is integral to the overall design. The splashback window is a carefully chosen element that allows light to penetrate while restricting the view of the neighbours. The mirrors above the overhead cupboards on this same wall also help reflect light back into the space making it open, bright, and inviting. stylemagazines.com.au
The other key feature of the spaces lies in the integration. The wall that separates the ancillary spaces of the powder room and pantry from the kitchen is clad in textured laminate, while the doors to enter these spaces are designed to sit flush with the surrounding panels, therefore concealing the openings. This creates a seamless effect that utilises space while looking flawlessly finished. The ability for this space to transform from a congregating hub during the day to party central at night is a certainty, making this home a prime example of luxury, diversity, and versatility. It’s an unrivalled execution of the client’s brief and a remarkable transformation of a weary set of flats to a stunning statement in interior design. Eating right can be a challenge for women while still keeping up with work, study, family commitments and a busy social life. Before you know it you’re cancelling that night out because you can’t find anything to wear and you swear tomorrow you’ll join the gym. Don’t let a busy life hinder your health or weight loss goals. Here are our top tips for healthy eating in a hurry: • Stock up on foods that help you make a healthy meal in minutes such as frozen steam-in-the-bag veggies, microwavable brown rice and canned tuna; • Look up the nutritional information for your favourite restaurants and keep a list of the best choices for when you absolutely have to grab takeout; • Beware liquid calories from milky coffees and bottled juice; • Keep a stash of healthy snack foods in your car, purse or office; and, • Multitask while dinner is in the oven by doing some sit ups or jumping jacks!
If you’ve recently become engaged (that cheeky cupid with his bow and arrow!), you might be a bit overwhelmed about where to start planning. It’s helpful to have a particular date in mind before enquiring. If you can be flexible this can also work to your advantage. No longer are Saturdays the only day to get married. There has been a large increase in Friday and Sunday weddings over the past few years and this can be a way to save money as some venues, like Victoria Park, will offer discounts in nonpeak times and alternative days of the week. Have you thought about the number of people you’d like to invite? Or what style of wedding you want? This will impact on finding the right space or room for your big day that will fit your guests perfectly. Beyond these details, your in-house Wedding Planner at Victoria Park will be able to assist with all of the other details including food, beverages, timelines, room set up, styling and entertainment to make your day perfect.

your unique space
Women: the key decision makers
think ahead for your legs
The undisputed heart of the home is the kitchen. Many functions such as briefing, debriefing and socialising and the main function, feeding ourselves, are all performed in this space. So when asked what is the most important element to a great kitchen design I always say ‘how it functions’ first and foremost. Before you engage a qualified designer to help you renovate or build a home, ask yourself the following questions to help you develop a brief for the project: What don’t you like about your current kitchen? How would you like your kitchen to relate to adjoining living spaces or outside areas? What tasks would you like to perform in the space? How do you like to cook? A baker will always need more space than someone that likes cooking Thai. Is this your ‘forever home’? Once you have the answers to these questions then it’s time to get in touch with a designer that can show you how to take this information and turn your dream kitchen into a reality.
A recent survey shows that women have the greatest say among couples when it comes to property. This doesn’t surprise me at all! Women have been a driving force in Australian real estate for at least the past 15 years. We’ve seen an increasing number of single career women buying property on their own; and we’ve seen an increasing number of women taking charge of the decision-making process in the case of couples purchasing together. So, why is this happening? Women are great at visualising the potential and noticing the finer features while men will tend to focus more on the bigger picture. A woman will remember the quality of the fittings and fixtures, the amount of storage space and the condition of the kitchen and bathrooms. When buying real estate, couples should play to their strengths. If one person is better with detail and the other is better with negotiation or has more confidence to bid under the pressure of an auction, divvy up the tasks accordingly and work as a team.
Now is a good time to think about booking in for a consultation at The Leg Vein Doctor. During the initial consultation and after your ultrasound scan, Dr Kemp will put together a personalised treatment plan that is valid for 12 months. Most patients require multiple visits in order to complete their treatment and we offer complimentary follow up reviews to ensure you are happy with the results, so from start to finish you will be in our care for around four months and sometimes longer for complex veins. Booking in advance offers you the freedom to choose treatment days and times to accommodate work, school and other commitments. After hours appointments are also available and very popular. You may choose to commence your treatment in the cooler months (our busiest time – as it is more comfortable to wear the compression stocking) and to have your legs all ready for your next summer holiday!

ambition meets compassion Clayfield College is proud to celebrate the outstanding achievements of its 2013 graduating class. With almost one quarter of the cohort achieving an Overall Position (OP) between 1-3, students have been guaranteed entry into highly sought after, diverse and interesting tertiary courses. All students in Year 12 who applied for a tertiary course were successful. Engineering, Commerce, Health and Law were attractive choices. Clayfield College offers a boutique education, delivering an engaging and rigorous academic program. “Every girl at Clayfield matters, we care for every student and work with them to achieve their personal
goals,” said Ms Skerman, Head of Senior Schooling. Pastoral care is paramount at Clayfield. Each girl is cared for by her Head of House, who attends to her social and emotional health, aiming to develop young women who are resilient and dignified. Added to this, each girl is also assigned an academic mentor to support her academic progress. While girls are encouraged to dream big, they are also supported with practical strategies to achieve their goals. “We want our girls to be

Why should your daughter be a St Aidan’s student?
Don’t miss St Aidan’s Open Day this March. Choosing the right school to guide your daughter through her education and young adulthood is a significant process: one that will help shape her life and goals. Thankfully, St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School eliminates doubt and provides a failsafe option for your daughter’s education. Most impressively, St Aidan’s is the first Queensland school with more than 50 students, to achieve 100 percent OP 1-15. Of that statistic, 43 percent of St Aidan’s girls achieved an OP 1-5 last year. This is on top of the fact that St Aidan’s is the number one school in Queensland in NAPLAN results. While St Aidan’s understand strong academics outcomes are the cornerstone of the good education, these incredible results are just one component that
makes it a school in which young women thrive. You can experience the many strengths of St Aidan’s this March at their Open Day. The school will open its doors on Saturday, March 8, 9am-12pm, giving prospective students and curious parents the chance to see what St Aidan’s culture is all about. Principal Karen Spiller will give an address at 10:30am, after which you will also have the opportunity to meet and ask questions of her and the Educational Leadership Team. Make sure you take advantage of this opportunity and experience the difference St Aidan’s can make for your daughter. solid gold soiree The ever-iconic Rossi’s Oscars is set to be a winner in 2014. Inaugurating in 1995 – when Queensland media personality, Damien Anthony Rossi (aka Mr. Hollywood) relocated to Brisbane from Tinseltown, Rossi’s Oscars has become a much-loved event on Brisbane’s vibrant social calendar. Though known as a star-studded party, the event, themed simply ‘Gold’ on March 3 is not just about the glitz. Since becoming a charity fundraiser in 2003, the Academy Awards celebration has raised thousands of dollars for cancer charities and cancer research organisations. As a columnist and the social reporter for The Sunday Mail as well as 4BC’s Entertainment Reporter, Rossi is an apt host. In 2014, he’ll switch things up by holding the party during the day, in conjunction with Event Cinemas at Carindale. “I couldn’t resist the offer of working with Kate
Donnellon (of Event Cinemas) again. Kate did our 2012 event when she was at the Treasury Casino and hit the ball out of the park with it,” explains Rossi. “She had the fantastic idea of screening the Oscars broadcast live - something we’ve never done before as our party was always held in the evening, several hours after the awards.” Rossi continues, “I’m extremely excited as I haven’t been able to watch the Oscars live in 19 years!” Glamorous guests will enjoy the luxurious Gold Class Cinema surroundings while viewing the Academy Awards ceremony in its entirety with pre and post telecast parties featuring fabulous entertainment and amazing Best Dressed prizes. next month kylie will take up her role as ambassador of the post and antenatal depression association (panda) to help other women like her.
Petite WAG and mother-of-two, Kylie Brown, wife of Lions legend, Jonathan Brown, talks to Kellie Alderman about motherhood, her style and her new role for PANDA. Glamorous, gregarious and always a winner on the Brownlow Medal red carpet, Kylie Brown began a blog last year to talk honestly about motherhood and her struggles with post natal depression after the birth of her first child, Olivia, now four. Next month she will take up her role as Ambassador for the Post and Antenatal Depression Association (PANDA) at the Growing Hope lunch and she hopes it will help shine a light on a subject that is close to her heart. “My first blog post got a lot of attention and ended up in every newspaper in the country,” she said.
“PANDA’s CEO asked me to come on board and I really wanted to do something to help other women avoid the pain that I went through.” Now, pregnant with her third child, Kylie continues to blog on motherhood and her other passions, fashion and beauty. The former beauty therapist said being pregnant hasn’t really changed her style. “I’ve always been one to embrace the bump and not try to hide it,” she said. Kylie’s blog is thegoodthebadtheunspoken.com; tickets for the lunch on March 7 can be bought at panda.org.au.

Neal’s top tips for hosting your own event:
Event expertise
• Visualise how you want your event to go before you begin • Create a ‘Run Sheet’ – Have a plan of what needs to happen and when • Attention to Detail: “There’s a term I use called “Silent Irritants.” These are the little aspects that affect your experience; an empty soap dispenser, lipstick on a fresh glass, a blown light bulb. These are minor issues on their own, but combined they create a subconscious negative impression of your experience.
At Co Events and Hospitality, the devil is in the detail. Neal Orpin got his first taste of the hospitality industry at the tender age of sixteen, washing dishes in the kitchen of a family friend’s restaurant. “I earned my stripes having chefs throw hot pans my way in the dish room,” he laughs. “But I was able to work my way up to the front of house and never looked back.” Since then, his love for entertaining has grown, and in 2013, he started Co Events and Hospitality with friend Peter Carter, Executive Chef and owner of Boucher in Graceville. Offering catering and management services including tailored menus, décor, marquees and staff for small private functions through to large corporate events, Neal’s mission is to provide the same high level of service and attention to detail you would expect from a first-class venue. 58
“My passion is to bring my operational expertise and understanding of hospitality, combined with Peter’s culinary talents, to deliver an experience far above expectations,” he says. Neal’s favourite part about the gig is seeing a client’s various event ideas and visions brought to life. “That’s the most exciting thing about our industry – no two occasions are ever the same.” Co Events and Hospitality www.coeventsandhospitality.com.au WWW.venuestream.com.au

Classic chic This loved-up duo celebrated their vows with an elegant black and white themed affair.
the wedding dress was inspired by 1930s black and white movies, timeless and elegant.
Images: Milque Photography
After meeting through mutual friends at a dinner party in New Farm in 2008, Commercial property agent Chris Davis took Sales and events manager Sally Thomas on a first date to Beccofino. Five years later, and back at Beccofino, Sally was seasoning her pasta when a dress ring Chris had previously bought her – two sizes too big – fell into the dish. Quick to act, Chris promptly pulled out a sparkling engagement ring and suggested it may be a better fit. The couple married in November 2013 at St Andrews Uniting Church, before entering the black and white themed marquee reception at her parent’s Clayfield property to a sea of sparklers waved by their 150 guests. The dress: Sally: “Paul Hunt designed my dress – he was incredible to work
with. The elegant style was inspired by 1930s black and white movies. The top was vintage lace with crystal beading over one shoulder and a chiffon skirt.” The flowers: Bouquet Boutique looked after all the flowers. Arrangements on the table were made of a variation of white flowers including peonies, roses and hydrangea set among pillar candles and tea lights. Bridal party: Five bridesmaids and five groomsmen. The bridesmaids wore long black Eileen Kirby gowns. The groom wore a custom suit by Wil Valor. The best part of the day: Sally: “Getting ready in the morning with family and bridesmaids, saying our vows in the church, and dancing the night away.” READ

Brisbane’s dining scene is constantly evolving. Over the last two years, we’ve seen many fine dining establishments close and casual, innovative eateries emerge. we take a look at the movers and shakers in a new food movement.
Yum Nua from Wandering Elephant
The Mobile Movement
The Pasta Cruiser
The foodie scene in Brisbane is on the move. By Lucy Stephens. It’s no understatement to say the Brisbane culinary landscape has had a massive transformation over the last 24 months. Casual eateries have cropped up where fine dining restaurants once stood, and diners are demanding good food at good prices. One emerging trend taking a stake on the shifting scene is food trucks. Setting up at various locations around Brisbane, the mobile trucks offer quality food, cooked fresh to order - at a price point everyone can afford. Pioneering the movement is The Bun Mobile. Part-owner Daniel Clark had manned the kitchens of top restaurants overseas before returning home and starting the business with his father Harold Fleming (also a chef), mother Christine and wife Natasha to start the business in March 2012. The team experimented with the product, eventually settling on an interpretation of Taiwanese street food, Gua Bao filled with Asian fusion flavours. Since then, the business has amassed a huge following, with the New York Times stylemagazines.com.au
proclaiming them a ‘must-do’ in Brisbane. “People know what they want, and are prepared to shop around,” Christine says. “We’ve got 10,500 people that follow us on Facebook. We just offer really good customer service, and really good food,” Christine Fleming says. Wandering Elephant who dish up Asian cuisine, and The Pasta Cruiser likewise have joined the convoy of travelling eateries. Eat Street Markets - a food-oriented market place - also cropped up on the Hamilton Northshore allowing vans and containers to sell their street-style chow in the one place. Neil Gladwin from The Pasta Cruiser says it’s all about meeting new demands of the public. “People like to go out for a night, but they are looking for a cheap spend so that they can try a few different places in the same weekend, or even in that day,” he says. Wandering Elephant Director Anthony Bartzis started the business after witnessing
the popularity of the trend overseas. “Unlike your traditional bricks and mortar food businesses, it’s wholly about the food,” he says. “We don’t have a fancy shop fitout, there are no waitstaff and no expensive crockery. I think people really appreciate this genuine, transparent approach.” One thing is evident; the food mobile wheels are in motion - and not showing signs of slowing any time soon. www.thebunmobile.com.au www.wanderingelephant.com.au www.thepastacruiser.com.au

Comfortable serve Slip into Artie & Mai for a good feed minus the pretense. Artie & Mai is the brand new casual dining eatery, filling out the space behind the iconic red face on Sandgate Road, left behind by Stockholm Syndrome. Named after owner’s Monica and Jimmy Strong’s children, Arthur and Maible, the venue offers diners a stylish yet relaxed hub for breakfast, dinner, and everything in between. The couple recently moved from Sydney, bringing their extensive hospitality background and a desire to offer serious food ‘without the pomp’. I headed in to check it out with my partner on a Wednesday evening, sidling up to a bench seat nestled against the exposed brick. The menu, much like its fit out, is informal but cool. ‘Small plates’ grace the top of the menu, with pizzas, ‘large plates’, ‘A bit on the Side’ and sweet stuff following, inviting guests to share a selection of meals at their leisure. After scrutinizing the menu, we decide on grilled haloumi with honey mustard
glaze and apple cider pork belly bites to start, followed by pear, pumpkin and blue cheese pizza, Chateau Briad with rustic chips and roasted mushroom jus. The haloumi was perfectly cooked, (re-igniting my obsession with the Greek delicacy) but the beef fillet was the star of the show; melt in the mouth, with pureed mushrooms creating a velvety jus. Washed down with a Murray’s Angry Man Pale Ale from their decent selection of craft beers, it was a tasty combo. The dishes aren’t particularly large, so you may find room for dessert, as we did. A word of warning; the Mars Bar cheesecake is irresistible, but wickedly decadent. Artie & Mai 340 Sandgate rd, Albion P 3862 1295 artieandmai.com.au

Sun, sand and samba The Rio Carnival is set to have a distinctive Brisbane flavour this year. With its cinematic landscapes, infectious Brazilian rhythm and vibrant party scene, it’s easy to see how people become seduced by Rio de Janeiro - something that Brazilian-Aussie, Mishel Jemma Finlayson, knows all too well. Mesmerised by the colour, flare and alluring sounds of Rio, Brisbaneborn Mishel moved to the Brazilian capital to study Samba and Zouk Lambada. After spending several years immersed in Brazilian culture and dance, Mishel returned to Brisbane to share her love for Samba creating Sambaliscious dance classes and the Rio Carnival Tour. “What I love most about the festival is that people of all ages, social backgrounds and ethnicities come together and share a common love of dance and music,” Mishel says.
stylemagazines.com.au
In the lead-up to the Carnival, Rio Samba schools select a Queen to represent a section of the parade. Impressed by Mishel’s dedication to promoting Samba abroad, she scored the prestigious position of Samba Queen in this year’s parade. And the best bit? Every day Brisbane women can dance in the carnival alongside the Samba Queen, by signing up for her two-week carnival from February 21 to March 6. Mishel says dancing on a moving float is “no mean feat”. Girls in the Rio Carnival Tour will be required to dance dressed in feathered-outfits and six-inch heels, all while singing in Portuguese. But rest assured – all who sign up will be given lessons in dance, Portuguese and on how to experience Rio as a local ‘Carioca’!

Hair extensions are an increasingly popular trend among fashionistas, but the debate on whether hair extensions are really worth your while remains the same. Stefan explores a few concerns you may have with achieving that instant sexy full hair look. Extensions can be attached in many different ways. Out-dated methods such as glue are often hard to remove and can break off close to the scalp due to their weight. We salute the new and less abrasive methods such as clip-in extensions and tape extensions. They are light and put far less stress on the hair follicle, still providing that desired length and volume! The ultimate goal with hair extensions is to achieve the most natural look possible. Queensland hair guru Stefan explains, “We use real human hair extensions, which can be coloured, cut and styled to suit your natural look.” This is another great benefit of hair extensions. They provide a great chemical free alternative to colouring your natural hair, so you can have those on trend highlights without doing a thing to your natural locks. Head to a Stefan Salon for professional advice on how to get the best look for you. Long luscious hair is no longer just for the A-Lister’s who can afford to splash the cash – tape and clip-in hair extensions start from just $160. Stefan Hair Fashions www.stefan.com.au

skin-tuition Embellish You Medi Spa’s Owner and Specialist Skin Practitioner Tina Hammond breaks down the technical jargon to explain treatments that benefit patients most. Cosmetic Tattooing
Micro-current
Cosmetic Tattooing can add definition to eyebrows, create a beautiful frame for eyes, and achieve the perfect pout. The effects create a long lasting, more youthful and glowing look.
Micro-Current is a ‘gym workout’ for your face. It involves electrical impulses that work with the face’s natural muscles to firm and stimulate.
LED Light Therapy
Peels remove dead skin cells, help soften the skin and regenerate new cells, helping minimise fine lines and wrinkles.
LED is a ‘soft laser’ that interacts with cells and stimulates them to produce new collagen and elastin. The red LED lights are used as an anti ageing treatment; the blue LED light is used in the treatment of acne.
Radio Frequency Heats up layers of the skin to firm and tighten by stimulating elastin and collagen. Radio Frequency treatment helps break down unwanted fat under the chin and body.

Catch Darren on The Block:
Design files
Fans vs Faves on Channel 9.
The Block judge and respected interior designer Darren Palmer, talks interiors, TV and his new flooring range for Carpet Court. For newcomers to the real estate game, buying and selling property can be an overwhelming process. So to help get through the renovations unscathed, Style sat down with Darren Palmer to find out the tricks of the trade. When it comes to buying a place, Darren says to look for things you can’t install – natural light, ceiling height, architectural detail. “I personally really love 1930s apartments,” Darren says. “Their facades are just beautiful, and they’re difficult and expensive to replicate,” Darren says. Having styled the homes of major celebs like Jen Hawkins, Darren is well versed when it comes to the subject of interior design. While Darren admits to following trends when it comes to fashion, he says he disregards fads when it
comes to interiors. His interior must-have? “Rugs,” he says. “A lounge room without a rug is like leaving the house without your shoes on – it’s silly,” he says. The dapper designer has just teamed up with Carpet Court to create Provincial Lane, an affordable, stylish flooring collection that includes durable laminate, a European vinyl plank and bamboo hard flooring as well as a 100 percent wool carpet range, available in a striking palette. As for what’s in store for the latest series of The Block, Darren is less vocal. “Every week on (last season) Sky High, I was like ‘what am I going to see next”. This time, it’s like ‘WOW’. Every week, there is some really phenomenal stuff. Mind-blowing stuff!”

known for its beautiful sunsets, lush landscapes and relaxed island culture, fiji offers an abundance of attractions. as lucy stephens discovers, some are more rewarding than others.
PLACED FROM PAGES APPROVED
island time Lucy Stephens heads to the Coral Coast of Fiji and finds there’s another form of tourism supporting the local economy. Bula! It’s a greeting you hear all day in Fiji – and it never gets old. While many assume it means ‘hello’, the word directly translates to life, and is said with the same vigor with which the Fijians live it. I recently spent three nights as a guest at the Outrigger on the Lagoon. Fiji, where I got acquainted with the lush Coral Coast and discovered a more responsible side to being a tourist. After arriving to the robust ‘Bula’ welcome, I joined Resort Manager, Russell Blaik and fellow journalists for cocktails at the Sundowner Bar overlooking the lagoon and beach. The bar lived up to its name, the sky ablaze with pink and orange as the sun set and we sipped Mai Tais and enjoyed a sumptuous dinner cooked by the resort’s award-winning Chef. The aim of my visit, decadent dinners and cocktails in the swim74
upbar aside, was to explore the Coral Coast, meet the locals and get to experience a more grass roots Fiji. Offering a mix of five star luxury and traditional Fijian culture, the hotel has joined forces with six other hotels to form the Fiji Islands Hotel and Tourism Association, with a focus on giving back to the local community. The Sigatoka District Hospital is just one of these projects. Hospital staff work tirelessly there to serve the Coral Coast with one basic operating theatre, a newly upgraded emergency ward built with help from the association but no maternity ward. As a born and bred Queenslander, this was an eye-opener. Outrigger on the Lagoon. Fiji General Manager and chairman of the Coral Coast Hotel Association Peter Hopgood, says a maternity
ward is vital, with 100 of his 300 female staff having given birth in the past 12 months. The Association is raising money through charity events and an optional $10 donation per stay from hotel guests, the aim being to raise sufficient funds to have the ward completed within 10 months. After meeting with the staff at the hospital, we headed back to the resort, taking in an art class, eating our way around the resort, and clocking off into Fijian time for the last day and a half of our stay.
As I jetted home, there was a chance to reflect on my stay. It wasn’t the cocktails or the spa treatments that really left an enduring memory. It was the people, their simple lifestyle, accepting natures and the lack of some amenities which we take for granted. I realised that as visitors, we can make a massive difference to developing nations like Fiji as well as benefiting ourselves through our efforts to make a difference www.coralcoastfiji.org www.outriggerfiji.com
