Health

WELLNESS WARRIOR Good health means having enough strength and energy to enjoy the things you love. Nourish your mind, body and soul with these simple steps to obtaining exceptional wellness. By Lou Parker, Style Magazines.

With dementia currently the second leading cause of death in the country, Alzheimer’s Australia CEO Carol Bennett says there are many ways to help prevent future illness. Diet, exercise and good sleep habits are all ways to keep the doctor at bay, but Ms Bennett says stimulating the brain with exciting and fun challenges is another fantastic way to tick the health boxes.

HYDRATION Hydration is essential to good health, as our cells rely on getting enough water to function and regenerate properly. Aside from preventing dehydration, water can also keep skin from turning dry and flaky, making it less prone to wrinkles.

“Brain health is incredibly important. It’s never too late to take up a new hobby, learn a language or musical instrument, or even get stuck into a crossword,” Ms Bennett says, adding that, as the saying goes, laughter really is the best medicine.

Suggestion: Try adding some flavour to your water by mixing it up with herbal tea, apple cider vinegar or even some fruit. Sliced oranges, strawberries and watermelon are great additions, especially in the warmer months.

“A positive attitude is always going to be a good thing.” Remaining social is also said to have great benefits. “The latest research indicates that, in conjunction with remaining physically active, following a healthy diet and not smoking, mentally challenging your brain and being socially engaged are also great ways to maintain good health,” Ms Bennett says.

EXERCISE Research suggests those who are inactive are more prone to disease and illness so keeping your body moving is crucial for good health. Exercise helps rid the body of toxins and helps to maintain strong bones.

We’ve put together some other quick tips to help improve your health and wellbeing.

GETTING ENOUGH FRESH FRUIT AND VEGETABLES IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF A BALANCED DIET.

MINDFULNESS Research suggests that setting aside regular time to regroup can aid in reducing blood pressure, headaches, ulcers and insomnia, as well as increasing immune function and emotional stability.

Suggestion: Every morning, try setting a positive intention for the day or finding something to be grateful for. Or start small by scheduling time throughout the day to stop and concentrate on your breathing.

Suggestion: Exercise doesn’t need to be hard or expensive. Why not set up a mini circuit at home? Combine things like walking up stairs, lunges, lifting small or medium weights, and stretches to get your daily movement requirements in. Or make it a social event by teaming up with friends for a brisk stroll or bike ride.

MEDITATION ENCOURAGES EMOTIONAL POSITIVITY, CALMNESS, CLARITY AND CONCENTRATION.

EAT CLEAN A healthy diet is about more than just watching the waistline. Essential vitamins and minerals absorbed from foods such as fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, whole grains and legumes can help to assist the body with energy levels, and healthy cells and hormones.

Sleep can be one of the easiest ways to improve your health. Anywhere from seven to nine hours is good for most people. By getting enough quality sleep the body has an opportunity to rest, repair and revitalise itself, which can result in better memory and immune function, improved metabolism and a fresher, clearer outlook.

Suggestion: Looking to clean up your diet but not

Brisbane beauty and Seven Network presenter Kay McGrath considers herself privileged to be getting older. The 59-year-old journalist says we shouldn’t be limited by our age, and encourages people to to get involved with life as much as possible by keeping up with technology and world events. “I really do believe you’re as young as you feel,” she says. “There’s a whole new and determined generation of baby boomers out there and I tell people to watch out because we don’t feel, look or act old,” Kay says, laughing. But the star admits she too has days where she struggles with her age.

THE SECRET TO AGING GRACEFULLY Popular Brisbane TV presenter Kay McGrath talks candidly about aging and what she does to stay healthy.

“Sometimes I get a fright when I look in the mirror and think ‘Oh, where did that saggy skin come from?’ But then I remember it’s how you approach the process. I’ve lost too many dear friends to get hung up on the fact that I look old. I know I’m blessed to be here. Often we think we’re bulletproof and we’re not; so when you put it into context, having a few wrinkles isn’t that bad,” she says. Working in an industry that is focused on appearance, Kay confesses she’s had to work hard to maintain her image. “I often wonder if I wasn’t on television whether I’d be the size of a house,” she jokes. “I am grateful, though, because I do really watch what I put in my mouth. I try to get my serves of vegetables and I’m very aware of portion sizes.”

6

But Kay also recognises it’s important to have fun. “I do enjoy a couple of wines and I might even sneak some dark chocolate,” she says cheekily. “Oh! And you can see me indulging in hot chips — they are my weakness. But it’s about earning those treats. I’ve tried every diet on the planet and it wasn’t until recently I realised there’s no magic trick.” Kay also credits her good health to regular exercise. “I try and move my body every day. I go to the gym twice a week and have a personal trainer. It’s been great for looking after bone density and building core strength, which becomes increasingly important as you age.” But the most vital part of Kay’s wellness regime is the special time she puts aside to meditate. “I believe in the connection between mind and body. Even just five minutes in the morning can set you up for the day. We are often very busy living in the past or future and it’s easy to miss what’s going on right in front of our noses.” Ultimately, though, Kay says the secret to aging well is happiness. “If you can find fun every day and you have a good sense of humour that’s a huge advantage. I read a quote once that said, ‘If you worry, you die — if you don’t worry, you still die.’ At my stage of life I’m grateful to be here and hopefully contribute to the world in some way,” Kay says, smiling.

Profile

OUR STORIES, OUR PEOPLE Lendlease residents share their inspiring journeys of life, love and success.

FRED’S LIFE OF EXPLORATION

THE ADVENTURER

FRED GREEN FROM LAND TO SEA, FRED GREEN REFLECTS ON HIS ADVENTURES OF A LIFETIME.

At 87-years-young, Fred Green says he hasn’t wasted a minute of his life. After a lifetime of travel, rugby and surf lifesaving, it goes without saying that Fred, who lives at The Lakes village in Bundaberg with his darling wife, Audrey, 85, now deserves to put his feet up. Fred grew up on a dairy farm in South Australia and says from a young age he was always on the go. “I was the youngest of five children by six years, so growing up we made our own fun. I played AFL for 18 years and was also very keen on surf lifesaving,” he says. His passion for the ocean would see him venture to South Africa, where he educated other surf life savers. Fred also became an avid sailor and, impressively, singlehandedly sailed from Fremantle to Africa in 1975. Like many Australians, Fred was hit hard with the travel bug, and after meeting and marrying his wife in 1951, the pair clocked up the miles adventuring all over the world to places such as South America, the Mediterranean, Turkey and the South Pacific. “I’ve learnt a lot from travelling;

you come back very humble. You meet such lovely people and realise that they are the real key to the trip. The world is full of beautiful people — rich, poor or indifferent. It’s all about meeting them and experiencing nice cultures and finding great food,” he says, smiling. And while he’s lived a jam-packed life, Fred doesn’t hesitate to recall his fondest memory of all. “If I could relive one day of my life, it would be the day I married my wife.” After six years abroad, Fred and Audrey settled in Bundaberg, where they raised their two children. However, 13 years ago, the loving couple decided to move to The Lakes. But the move was just the start of another new and exciting chapter. “In my recreational time I’m a practicing artist — I paint watercolours and oil. I joined the arts society and have had six solo exhibitions in Bundaberg, Childers, Monto and Gin Gin,” the artist, who mostly paints landscapes and country scenes, says proudly. With a full and varied life under his belt, Fred says the possibilities are endless.

“I LEARNT A LOT FROM TRAVELLING. YOU MEET SUCH LOVELY PEOPLE AND REALISE THEY ARE KEY TO THE TRIP.”

THE BOTANISTS

LYN AND JOHN CALL JOHN AND LYN REVEAL THE REAL SECRET BEHIND THEIR THRIVING MARRIAGE.

Many would say there’s no such thing as a perfect marriage, but when it comes to wedded bliss, John and Lyn Call are just as in love as when they first met 33 years ago. Now both retired, Lyn, 66, and John, 79, say although the secret to a happy union is communication and laughter, their mutual love for gardening is just as important. “I come from a gardening background. My parents were self-taught gardeners and when my dad retired he started a nursery,” former hairdresser Lyn says. She explains that while her and hubby John only moved into the Sunshine Coast’s Buderim Gardens retirement village six months ago, they were eager to start digging up the soil straight away — which isn’t surprising, considering their last home was sold based on how great the gardens were! “When we moved in here we had our work cut out for us. There was no garden at all, it was just stones and dirt,” John says.

view of the beach, but our view is our garden,” Lyn says. And it seems John and Lyn aren’t the only ones captured by the astonishing atmosphere. Their garden has become a focal point on the street – in fact, it’s gained so much attention that the creative couple are now helping others whip their own landscape into shape with private consultations around the village! “It’s about showing people what you can create,” John says proudly. He also explains that designing your very own backyard paradise doesn’t have to be hard, and that with some proper planning and good research, anyone can have a great outdoor living area. But having a nice garden isn’t just about a pretty view. Not only does getting their hands dirty keep the pair connected, it also plays a part in keeping them fit, healthy and mindful. “It’s therapeutic,” Lyn says.

It wasn’t long before the duo created an Asianinspired yard, transforming the outdoor living area on their spacious two-bedroom home into a tranquil and modern zen garden. The couple have utilised space with vertical wall gardens, potted plants and striking colours. Now, just in time for summer, the twosome are looking forward to enjoying many a cold beverage while admiring their work. “We’re going to live out here over Christmas. We’ve created this garden as our view — people that live near the beach have a

John agrees, “Yeah, it really is for me. Lyn is often up and about doing things but I like to just sit down, relax and take it all in.” Lyn, who’s also an avid floral art designer, says she wants people to realise that retirees can be just as active and involved as anybody else. “It’s about not stopping. We love being able to motivate people, which I think is what we’ve done so far at Buderim Gardens. If I can encourage someone to get outside then I’m happy,” she says.

10

THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS

“WE LOVE BEING ABLE TO MOTIVATE PEOPLE. IF I CAN ENCOURAGE SOMEONE TO GET OUTSIDE THEN I’M HAPPY.”

Lyn is big on colour in her garden.

The pair are proud of their zen garden.

Feeling happy is a fundamental part of good health. Studies suggest that people who smile regularly, laugh often and frequently think positive thoughts end up living for longer. On top of that, research shows happiness can also change the chemical makeup in the body leading to better immunity, stronger cell repair and a reduction in inflammation. To enhance your overall happiness, practise saying positive affirmations throughout the day. Simple things like congratulating yourself for a job well done, praising yourself on your appearance or acknowledging love and acceptance towards yourself are great ways to improve internal self-talk. Other ways to increase happiness are to spend quality time with family and friends, take up a new hobby or skill and enjoy the outdoors more. Also, make a point of not going to bed angry and try not to sweat the small stuff. Remember, “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change” — Dr Wayne Dyer. True happiness is always found within.

“I’VE BEEN DANCING SINCE I WAS TWO YEARS OLD. AS A CHILD I WOULD DANCE AROUND THE BREAKFAST BAR.”

That’s probably because from a young age, Pauline has always loved expressing herself in creative ways. Over the years she’s written everything from short romance stories to murder mysteries — but her real passion is hitting the dance floor for a boogie. “I’ve been dancing since I was two years old. I love it! As a child I would dance around the breakfast bar in the kitchen and when my mother and father would take me to the movies, I’d dance in the aisles when the opening music played,” she says, admitting she still enjoys listening to a good track. “I like all kinds of music, particularly 70s and 80s and classical music.” A highlight for Pauline was taking out the number one spot in a dancing competition called The Eisteddfod in 1940. The fun-loving lady has also had great success in her career, working in accounts and later in the health and wellness sector for a vitamin company.

THE DANCER

But the real highlight for the mum of two has been the friends she’s met along the way, especially now she’s living at The Gardens on Lindfield. She’s even met a very special companion!

PAULINE RUGG POSITIVE PAULINE RUGG TELLS HOW SHE DANCED HER WAY TO LOVE AND LONGEVITY.

She may be in her 90s, but Pauline Rugg is probably more modern than many half her age!

“I’ve got lots of friends here and enjoy going to church on Sundays. While being at the village I have also found love and it’s very exciting. It’s the one thing that’s stood out for me this late in life. It’s such a lovely thing in your life to have someone you care that much about. One day my doctor said to me, ‘I want to know what it is that makes you happy. I see you walk in and you’re glowing.’”

The groovy grandma is the proud owner of merchandise from the hit reality TV series, Keeping up with the Kardashians and boasts about having 86 pairs of pants and 106 tops.

Pauline gushes that finding love at her age has been wonderful and says the secret to longevity is staying healthy and believing that you’re only as old or young as you feel.

“I love fashion,” Pauline says, adding she enjoys nothing more than throwing a good outfit together.

“I don’t take tablets or wear glasses. I’m very fortunate. I believe it’s all about how old you feel at heart.”

PETER LEE PETER LEE SHARES PRECIOUS MEMORIES OF TRAVEL, LOVE AND NEW BEGINNINGS.

Peter Lee has proven that it’s never too late to become a star.

England as an apprentice — I was only a teenager at the time. From there I moved through the ranks, which took me to places like Egypt, Malaya and Bahrain,” he says.

After spending years in the airforce and travelling around the world, the 85-year-old has taken up an entirely new career in acting and is regularly cast as an extra.

All up he’s travelled to 28 countries, eventually settling down in Mount Tamborine with his wife Joyce. Peter worked as a service manager at a car garage and the pair settled into a lovely life in Australia.

“SHE ASKED IF SHE COULD HAVE A DANCE WITH ME AND THE REST IS HISTORY.”

Sadly, Joyce passed away from ovarian cancer in 2010 and Peter made the decision to move to The Gardens on Lindfield.

Peter says despite having had a quadruple bypass, the key to remaining youthful is keeping busy. “My days at The Gardens on Lindfield village are pretty busy; I only really have Thursdays off. Most of the time I play golf or bowls and when I’m not doing that I’m often off shopping,” the active retiree says. While Peter maintains a bustling life, his days are now a lot slower than they used to be. “In January 1947 I joined the Royal Airforce in

Peter has happy memories of his wife and says he will never forget the moment he first laid eyes on his beauty. “We met at a dance,” he says, smiling. “Back in those days, we would all sit around the edge of the dance floor. As I was walking past her I accidentally tripped on her foot. In return, she asked if she could have a dance with me and the rest is history.”

THE ROAD LESS TRAVELLED FROM COAST TO DESERT, COUNTRYSIDE TO BUSH — THE GREAT AUSTRALIAN OUTDOORS OFFERS AN ADVENTURE FOR EVERY KIND OF GREY NOMAD. By Elle Raison, Style Magazines.

If you ask any traveller what inspires their adventures, the core theme is the same: to travel is to learn, grow and challenge yourself. It’s to see the incredible wonders of nature and marvel at the things humans create when they put their hands, minds and hearts to something. It’s to make memories, build friendships and experience moments you never would have if you didn’t leave the comfort of your home. In the famous words of Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, “To move, to breathe, to fly, to float, to gain all while you give, to roam the roads of lands remote, to travel is to live.”

ask a grey nomad what they think you should do. There is no doubt they will tell you to just do it. The freedom that comes hand-in‑hand with retirement is refreshing — an empty nest, mortgage-free home and all the time in the world to do what you have always wanted to do are the perfect ingredients for an adventure-filled life on the road.

A quick internet search of the term “grey nomad” will leave you with a wealth of knowledge and inspiration from others who have done it before. You may be pleasantly surprised at the abundance of online journals, groups and organisations that exist purely to share guidance on how to get started, along with personal experiences and travel tips. Leaving a lifestyle you are familiar with will be daunting but the rewards will most definitely be worth it.

This sunburnt country has no shortage of beautiful scenery. Depending on what landscape you feel like exploring, you can visit the coast, desert, countryside, bush, mountains, rainforests, lakes, rivers, reefs… the list goes on.

If you’ve never thought about making your way around the country or you’re hesitant about taking a break from your routine,

With almost one million kilometres of roads to drive, Australia offers travellers many destinations to choose from. You could essentially travel for years and almost never end up in the same place twice.

Whether you are a long-term grey nomad or one who likes to take smaller trips, lifelong partners, a bunch of friends or a solo traveller, there are so many incredible places to visit in our vast nation. If you’re ready to start your adventure, here are a few suggestions on the top parks and destinations in Queensland. If you are already on the road,

Bundaberg–based Tracey and Mike McPhee always knew their lives would be far from ordinary, but no one could have predicted that in just four short years they’d be running Alowishus Delicious, a hot spot café that would take the region by storm. “We thought we would be in for an easy couple of weeks when we opened December 28th, 2011 but we couldn’t have been more wrong,” Tracey laughs, adding that the eatery, which specialises in quality coffee, home-baked treats, fresh juice and gelato, was an instant hit with locals. “Since then we have gone from strength to strength. We have laughed, cried, won, lost and learned a million things along the way,” she says. NEWS

COMMUNITY CONNECT Community Connect was launched in Queensland in July 2015. The initiative supports and sponsors local community groups that have been nominated by the villages. Each village nominates four local charities, community groups or organisations that they wish to connect with. These groups are then invited to the village for a morning tea. Lendlease donates $500 to each of these groups for their hard work in the community. If you’re a resident looking to get involved or you simply want to nominate a community group close to your heart, contact your village manager.
