CITY PROJECT

Central Florida’s signature arts event returns for its 7th year to the heart of Downtown Orlando as The Creative City Project presents “IMMERSE 2018” on Friday, October 19 and Saturday, October 20. In partnership with the 2018 presenting sponsor, Orlando Health, IMMERSE is the annual performing and interactive arts experience from The Creative City Project. It takes over the streets and public spaces in Downtown Orlando every October. This year’s event showcases more than 1,000 artists from over 100 arts organizations, including the Orlando Ballet and the Orlando Philharmonic, in the streets and public spaces along Orange Avenue, Church Street and Pine Street on Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., with experiences opening at noon on Saturday. New large-scale, interactive installations make IMMERSE 2018 more immersive than ever, like a 3,200 square-foot Giant Ball Pit and an Immersive Photo Experience in partnership with Corkcicle called “The Worlds of Corkcicle”. “The Creative City Project’s annual event IMMERSE is dedicated to creating experiences that audiences can’t have anywhere else,” says Executive Director
Cole NeSmith. “Whether it’s a Cirque du Soleil performer flying from a crane high overhead, an immersive orchestral experience that puts the audience at the center of the orchestra, or largescale, interactive projection experiences, we’re committed to creating a one-of-a-kind experience. Through our large-scale projections, the Giant Ball Pit and Immersive Photo Experience, we’re creating even more unique arts encounters for our guests this year.” IMMERSE 2018 offers several different ticket options ranging from free to VIP and the special Dinner Party Project Experience. In addition, two craft cocktail experiences are a part of IMMERSE 2018. Guests are also encouraged to visit the many bars and restaurants along the event footprint as they enjoy all the experiences IMMERSE offers. Creative City Project began in 2012 as a group of artists performing on street corners and in plazas around Downtown Orlando. It has now grown into an arts non-profit organization that helps audiences live a life of creativity and adventure throughout the year and at its annual event IMMERSE.

Andaz Savannah
By Riesa Pascal
A luxurious weekend in the “Hostess City of the South” A chance to visit the charming Southern escape of Savannah, Georgia is not one that can be easily passed upon! After hearing nothing but wonderful things about the oldest city in Georgia, it quickly became one of my top bucket-list destinations and remained there until my long-awaited opportunity finally came this summer. From horse-drawn carriages and cobblestone squares to trendy boutiques and coastal cuisine, Savannah was a world straight out of a fairy-tale movie, and Andaz Savannah proved to be the perfect accommodations for the show. Located in the heart of the Historic District, Andaz Savannah is a stylish boutique hotel experience that draws in visitors from around the world. Upon my arrival, I was greeted by staff with a cold beer and warm smiles that immediately made me feel at home in my new home for the weekend. As if a complementary local beer wasn’t enough reminder that I was in the “Hostess City of the South,” the luxurious amenities in my guestroom were sure to

finish the job. Having recently announced the completion of an extensive transformation of their 151 guestrooms and suites, I was eager to see what the all-new Andaz Savannah had to offer. Andaz Savannah’s redesigned guestrooms and suites exhibited a color palette rooted in its surroundings and fresh, abstract focal pieces by NG Collective. As a guest, I also enjoyed a playful ode to the “Three Wise Monkeys” found throughout the revitalized guestrooms and suites. My own spacious suite featured luxurious furnishings, European style showers, a pedestal tub and a balcony overlooking the city and historic downtown. Large windows and artful decor brightened the room and set the mood for the Southern sophistication I was about to experience over the course of the next couple days. With that being said, there was no time to waste when it came to experiencing all that Andaz Savannah had to offer so I tore myself
away from the gorgeous accommodations and made my way down to 22 Square Bar for craft cocktails that have been named the best in town! Fortunately, it didn’t take long to see why as my companions and I enjoyed a refreshing mix of classic and contemporary beverages infused with a variety of fresh juices, homemade syrups, tonics and artisanal liquors. Naturally our 22 Square Bar cocktails were followed by a taste of the flavors of the Georgia coast at 22 Square Restaurant. The chic market to table eatery featured modern Southern inspired cuisine made from locally grown produce and sustainable ingredients. From local caught seafood straight out of the Atlantic to Heritage Poultry raised humanely and naturally, 22 Square’s quality ingredients and commitment to sustainability was evident in every tasty bite. In addition to exquisite evening dining, 22 Square also features a bountiful breakfast buffet of market fresh foods, baked goods and espressos, but be mindful not to eat too much if you intend on participating in my

favorite activity of the weekend: Savannah Taste Experience! Regularly ranked as a Top Thing to Do in Savannah, The First Squares Food Tour by Savannah Taste Experience was a tasty and historic journey to six unique foodie spots surrounding the initial squares built in the city. My companions and I sampled an eclectic mix of delicious foods as our firecracker tourguide, Country, shared her vast knowledge about the food, the restaurants, and the rich culture around us. Tasting locations included everything from Molly MacPherson’s Scottish Pub—a traditional Scottish restaurant highlighting dishes consumed by some of Savannah’s earliest settlers—to award-winning honey store Savannah Bee Company and everything in between. In addition to tasting the best of Savannah, the First Squares Food Tour also helped us to familiarize ourselves with the city which proved to be abundantly helpful as we set of to explore on our own later that afternoon. From walking the Savannah Riverfront to embracing local culture and must-have shopping at quaint boutiques, the long weekend in Savannah just wasn’t enough to see it all! Still full from our Savannah Taste Experience, my companions and I rounded out the day back at Andaz Savannah
with craft cocktails and light bites poolside on their second-floor terrace surrounded by colorful views and luxurious cabanas. As late afternoon gave way to night, my companions and I set out again to explore a different side of Savannah. Our desire for a nightlife adventure brought us to the famed Alley Cat Lounge. A single doorman stood guard over the inconspicuous entry as we made our way down an unassuming staircase and into a secret world that every tourist needs to experience. Sleek decor and a classy environment set the stage for the innovative speakeasy that was packed with both Savannah locals and tourists alike. A complimentary bowl of popcorn tickled our taste buds as we browsed through a menu unlike anything I’ve seen before. The menu, named the Alley Cat Rag, was creatively displayed as a 32 page newspaper with entertaining boozerelated content separated by types of drinks. With so much to choose from, it’s impossible not to find a beverage suitable to your taste. As my companions and I came to find out, there was truly something for everyone. Returning to the Alley Cat Lounge upon my next trip to Savannah is an absolute must!
As Floridians, we have no excuse to not treat ourselves to a long weekend in this nearby, beautiful city and I’m ashamed it took me so long to finally see it for myself! Savannah lived up to being the “Hostess City of the South” in every sense of the word and the renowned Andaz Savannah proved to be the perfect host for my travel needs. With its artful décor, relaxed modern vibe, and new South sophistication, the redesigned Andaz Savannah allowed my companions and I to experience a fashionable urban oasis without ever setting foot outside although an authentic adventure could be found just minutes away. The prime location being just steps away from the riverfront helped us to take advantage of trendy shopping, dining, historic sightseeing, and more. I hope you’ll consider planning your own weekend getaway to this quintessential Southern town where you’ll quickly discover the enchanting soul of Savannah, a vibrant destination for travelers across the world.

A Whole New Kind of Offering the functional practicality of an SUV, the dynamic design of an Audi coupe and exceptional driving dynamics, the all-new 2019 Audi Q8 sets a new standard as the top SUV from the Audi brand. Richly equipped with comprehensive connectivity and versatile enough for exploring just about any road, the Q8 seamlessly integrates technology and advanced driver assistance systems to deliver everything customers expect from a luxury performance SUV. With standard seating for up to five passengers and, with the rear seats folded, class-leading cargo capacity, the Q8 has a commanding presence in any driving situation.
PERFORMANCE The Q8 features a new 3.0-liter TFSI® V6 engine, which generates 335 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. Paired with an eight-speed tiptronic® transmission, which is well suited for the low-end torque of the turbocharged V6, its eight gears provide quick, smooth shifts. This new V6 engine features a twin-scroll turbocharger positioned directly inside the “V,” paired with a revised Audi valvelift system, to help ensure improved engine responsiveness and performance. The Q8 delivers more power and elasticity over a wider range of RPMs than the Q7. As a result, the Q8 can travel from zero to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds. The 2019 Q8 will come standard equipped with Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) technology. The 48-volt system is extremely compact – enough to be stored under the rear cargo floor. Power is supplied from the 10Ah battery to a belt alternator starter (BAS) to enhance the comfort of the start/stop system. Every Q8 is also standard equipped with quattro® all-wheel drive, offering highprecision and dynamic handling through 24

active torque distribution to both axles. This purely mechanical system transfers torque to the front and rear axles at a standard ratio of 40:60, and when required, can transfer the majority of the power to the axle with better traction. Electronic wheel-selective torque control can add additional traction across each axle through individual wheel braking application.
DESIGN The Audi Q8 introduces the brand’s new SUV design language for both exterior and interior features. With an octagonal design, the Singleframe® grille has evolved to become more muscular and striking. Six vertical chrome struts give the grille an even more dominant appearance. A wide mask connects the Singleframe grille to the headlights. Together with the strong lines, athletically tight surfaces and highly-contoured airinlets, the front of the vehicle portrays a commanding presence on the road. Thanks to the frameless doors, the dynamic roofline ends in gently inclined D-pillars, which are supported by the wide, pronounced wheel arches, paying homage to the vehicle’s quattro DNA, creating an unmistakable Audi silhouette. A light strip connects the taillights at the rear of the vehicle. As in the original quattro coupe, a black surface underlines this strip, giving the vehicle its own unique light signature. The diffuser with its four vertical guide elements mimics the look of the grille, with large exhaust tailpipe trims integrated into its edges. the blood at a fast pace to separate the lighter plasma from the rest of the blood. The isolated platelet-rich plasma is stimulated to begin releasing growth factors that will increase collagen production and encourage skin renewal. The platelet-rich plasma is then injected and micro-needled into the patient’s face. As a PA-C as well as the owner of Spa Blue, I am able to inject the platelets into any problem areas the patient may have, whether for example it’s the under eye region or nasal labial folds. The Licensed Medical Estheticians, Brittany Cerrato and Saudia Richardson, will then microneedle the remaining PRP into the skin using the MicroPen Elite by Eclipse. This increase in collagen and growth factors creates a more youthful, plumper, and firmer appearance in the skin. The Vampire Facial requires little to no downtime. There may be some redness and tenderness on the first day, and occasionally bruising can occur. By day two, the initial redness will be gone and the swelling is minimal. All patients are able to resume their normal daily activities following the treatment and are able to apply makeup as normal the following day.
THE SECRET TO ETERNAL BEAUTY?
Within two weeks’ patients begin to see noticeable results, but the best result will be at month two. Individuals report of having a “glow” and younger-looking skin. These results can last between one and two years, although a majority of our patients at Spa Blue like to come in once a year for upkeep. Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy has also been shown in numerous studies to be an effective treatment for hair loss in men and women known as Androgenetic Alopecia. We have seen excellent results in our hair loss patients in just one session.
VAMPIRE FACIAL By Janet Beres, PA-C & owner of Spa Blue
You’ve probably seen it on social media, Kim Kardashian’s bloody-faced selfie. No, it’s not Halloween makeup—it’s actually one of the latest trends when it comes to skin care, also known as “The Vampire Facial”. However, don’t let the name scare you, there are a lot of misconceptions about this treatment and I’m here to clear all that up. Kim Kardashian’s photo being one of them. It is no wonder that the procedure has garnered a reputation for looking painful. Looks can be deceiving however, and this treatment might be the answer to many people’s skin care concerns. The more technical name for this procedure is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy. PRP therapy was first developed back in the 1970’s during open heart surgery, but it wasn’t until the early 2000’s when it was starting to gain popularity in orthopedic surgery. With this treatment, the patient’s own blood is separated from the healing platelets found in blood plasma, and then re-injected back into the body to promote healing. Platelets are tiny blood cells that play a pivotal part in the clotting process, while also repairing damaged blood vessels and cells. Think of platelets as little powerhouses that release proteins for growth when they come in contact with the body’s tissue.

This same process is used in the Vampire Facial. We start out by applying a topical anesthesia to keep the patient comfortable during the treatment. The patient’s own blood is then drawn, and placed in a centrifuge for approximately ten minutes. The centrifuge spins

CELEBRITY SOUP
By Riesa Pascal
Contrary to what Hollywood and TV stars would have you believe, not every celebrity desires a life permanently in the spotlight. In fact, some celebs have run far away from their fame and went on to pursue surprisingly normal careers. Here’s a look at six celebrities who found happiness in a life of normalcy. By Riesa Pascal
Karyn Parsons Though she is best known as the spoiled and selfish Hilary Banks on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” Karyn Parson is actually quite the philanthropist in real life. In 2002, she took a 16-year break from acting and established the Sweet Blackberry Foundation. Karyn currently serves as president of the nonprofit, which strives to bring little-known stories of AfricanAmerican achievements to a child audience. Since 2005, the foundation has produced three illustrated shorts featuring an all-star cast and now has a fourth in the works. Kevin Jonas From 2005 to 2013, Kevin Jonas served as onethird of the Jonas Brothers which he co-founded with brothers Nick and Joe. The musically gifted trio experienced immense success during their active years including five top 10 hits, two #1 hits and even a 3D documentary released in cinemas. After the band’s break up, Kevin hung up the guitar and took up a surprisingly normal life of serial entrepreneurship. He co-founded construction company Jonas Werner Homes, created a now-defunct food app called Yood and is currently a partner in Philymack Games, a celebrity mobile app game company. 32

Al Green In 1995, Al Green was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as “one of the most gifted purveyors of soul music.” Needless to say, the “Let’s Stay Together” singer has enjoyed quite a successful career in music including eight top ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100, but these days Al is inspiring his fans in a very different way. For more than 40 years, the Reverend Al Green has been the pastor at Full Gospel Tabernacle Church in Memphis, Tennessee where he now enjoys a career of a higher calling. Sarah Michelle Gellar You most likely remember Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers on the cult classic “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” but today Sarah’s life is a far cry away from daggers and demons. These days her main focus is on Foodstirs, an organic and kid-friendly baking line she co-founded in 2015 with two longtime friends. The growing company produces baking kits and mixes for sale online, by subscription, or in select stores.
Dylan Sprouse Having started acting when he was just eight months old, Dylan the definition of child actors. Along with his twin brother Cole, Dylan is best known for his lead role in the hit Disney Channel series, “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody.” The brothers also shared the role of Julian McGrath in “Big Daddy, but now Sprouse is more focused on a career in brewing. Named America’s youngest master brewer by according to Interview magazine, Dylan recently cofounded All-Wise Meadery in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he serves as CEO and mazer. Vanilla Ice Seriously, does this man need any introduction? In 1990, Robert Van Winkle tore up the charts under the stage name Vanilla Ice with his hit song “Ice Ice Baby” (it’s okay, I’m singing it in my head too). When his music career hit a pause in the mid-90s, his life went in a total different direction which found him in the real estate business. In 2010, Robert’s skilled work as a flipper, remodeler and builder earned him his own DIY Network television series called“The Vanilla Ice Project.” The show kicked off its eighth season this summer.

Associates in Dermatology Your Skin Cancer & Skin Care Specialists
“From practice to research and outreach, I’ve devoted my career to one goal,” says Dr. Steppie, president and medical director of Associates in Dermatology. What goal? To raise awareness about skin cancer. Michael Steppie, MD is a board-certified physician with residencies in internal medicine, dermatology and dermatologic surgery. His practice, Associates in Dermatology, has provided medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatological care to Central Floridians for more than a quarter of a century, reflecting his combined focus on research and patient care. “From our experienced physicians to our highly trained professional staff, every member of my team takes pride in providing outstanding results,” Dr. Steppie says. “Whether treating skin cancer or providing esthetic services, each one puts the patient first.” Especially crucial, are cutting-edge treatments for skin cancer. “MOHS micrographic surgery is one of the most effective skin cancer treatments we offer,” Dr. Steppie says. “This procedure can cure up to 99 percent of basal cell carcinomas, the most common form of skin cancer. We’ve added a skilled boardcertified plastic surgeon who specializes in reconstructive procedures and performs most MOHS surgery repairs, as well as cosmetic procedures.” Skin cancer is a central focus of Associates in Dermatology, but it’s not the only one. “People want to have healthy, youthful-looking skin,” Dr. Steppie explains. “To satisfy this need, we provide expert esthetic services, too.”

In some locations, services also include cosmetic procedures including injectable muscle relaxers like Botox® and Xeomin®, dermal fillers such as Juvederm® and Belotero® Balance, just to name a few. We also offer solutions for permanent hair removal, sclerotherapy, laser skin resurfacing and medical strength TCA chemical peels. Research with Results Dr. Steppie goes beyond clinical practice to pursue dermatologic research that may advance skin cancer detection. One of his lines of research, in collaboration with Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute at Lake Nona, involved identifying biomarkers that may predict susceptibility to melanoma. “The promise of finding cancer early, when it can be most effectively treated, is really exciting,” Dr. Steppie says. “Identifying melanoma biomarkers could be the first step in developing earlier, more reliable diagnostics that could, in turn, reduce deaths.” This collaborative melanoma research was published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology in April 2017. Dr. Steppie also contributed to a breakthrough study on vitiligo, published only five months later. “If you have any questions about skin cancer or skin health in general, reach out to us at Associates in Dermatology. From lifesaving cancer treatments to skilled esthetic procedures, we strive to provide state-of-the-art care delivered in a welcoming environment.”
In addition to excisions of skin cancers, moles and skin lesions, Associates in Dermatology treats a number of skin conditions such as psoriasis, acne, eczema, allergic dermatitis, warts, and also diseases of the hair and nails.

Vanessa Minter Bangz Park Avenue Salon
#ONE
R E A D E R S ’ C H O I C E AWA R D
Vanessa Minter always knew that she would be an artist. Music, painting, writing—these were all things Vanessa adored in her childhood. But most of all, she loved hair. It may have been her grandfather, with his barbershop and passion for industry, that first intrigued her to the world of hairstyling, or even her dolls, who were the subjects of her first attempts to cut hair. For her entire life, Vanessa knew that the hair industry would be her art. In the same way that beautiful paintings had moved her to emotion, she wanted to help people realize that the beauty of art lay within every individual. Now Vanessa lives in Orlando with her husband Martin and her two children, Chloe and Caleb, and it was in Orlando that Vanessa’s dream of owning a hair salon became a reality. Bangz Park Avenue holds a special place in Orlando’s heart—it’s the longest standing salon in the state, having held the same name and location for over thirty years. But Bangz is so much more than its history—it is a place for community, where teamwork not only helps people look their best, but also feel their best. For Vanessa and her team, growth and learning are key to the future vision of Bangz Park Avenue, where creating art is a passion, not just a profession. It’s this wanting of creativity and community that led Vanessa—and Bangz Park Avenue— on its most significant journey yet. It was almost a decade ago that Vanessa began her volunteer work at the Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital. A dear friend recommended her to a program called “Pamper Me Parties”, and Vanessa knew it would be a perfect fit. She spent the next few years visiting the hospital and helping pediatric patients feel their best. This experience was deeply moving in Vanessa’s vision of her future—she had always cared deeply about her community, but she knew that she was called to help those who needed a tender touch most. Now, Vanessa has translated this calling into reality through her foundation at Bangz Park Avenue Salon. The salon is now a partner of the Cancer Society in Florida and regularly provides services free of charge to those who may need it. Vanessa is proud that Bangz will be the host salon for Pink on Park, an event in October benefitting Florida Hospital’s Breast Cancer Fund. As she has with all else, she cares deeply for the work she does with her foundation and is incredibly grateful that the community of Bangz has helped her achieve this vision. The future of Bangz Park Avenue Salon is certainly bright for the team, their guests, and the community. As far as Vanessa is concerned, the possibilities are endless, and the art is only just getting started. Photo by Kimberly Jefcoat

VICTORIA JEWELERS Baldwin Park Frequently Asked Questions Answered by Central Florida’s Premiere Custom Jeweler
Q: Why should I choose custom over the designer brands?
A: Most importantly, you can give her a one-ofa-kind piece of jewelry that you helped design. It can be “as unique as your love story”. When you buy a designer brand ring, as the end consumer, you are paying for every billboard, magazine ad, etc. it took to brand that line. Not only are you paying more, but you are giving her a ring that hundreds, possibly thousands of other people already have. When you buy a custom ring you pay for materials and labor only. Therefore, we are able to give you the highest quality of cut diamonds. Not only the primary stone, but all of the surrounding stones are cut to the most strict specifications. Combine that with the finest quality of craftsmanship and she will have a ring on her finger that is not only elite in quality but made just for her, at a comparable price. Q: Why not just buy a diamond online? A: If there’s ever a time when you need someone who has your back, it’s when you are trying to determine the value of a diamond. Go to any online diamond website, enter all your specs (size, shape, color, clarity, etc) and you will have hundreds of diamonds come up even though you’ve entered specific criteria. Let’s say you selected GIA certified one carat round, G color, SI 1 clarity. Your choices will range in price from under $4,000 to over 10,000. Here are some of the most common reasons why: • What is the overall rough your diamond was cut from? • Is the diamond milky or just plain lifeless? (As shown in the picture to the left)
• Are there visible imperfections in the diamond even though it’s SI-VS clarity? • Does the diamond hold color even though it’s a H-I in color? • How is the overall brilliance of the diamond?
to you, the diamond you chose undoubtedly had one of these undesirable characteristics. Yet they sold it to you anyway. At Victoria Jewelers we will prepare a layout of several stones, all within your criteria and budget. At that point you can compare them to one another in person. This is something you can NOT do online. These stones have been hand selected out of hundreds of stones that didn’t meet Victoria Jewelers strict standards of quality and brilliance. This experience is the polar opposite of buying a diamond online. Q: What separates Victoria Jewelers from other local jewelry stores?
A: We have been doing business in the Orlando area since 1987. We have expanded twice, and we are getting ready to take over another larger space in Baldwin Park. We are family owned and operated. We have strong values, and that is of the utmost importance. You won’t find the answers to these questions printed on a diamond certificate. However, it’s a well known fact in the diamond industry that any of these will greatly diminish the brilliance, value, and marketability of the stone.

DON’T MISS THE BEAT
THANK YOU FOR TODAY By Courtney Caggiano
The northwestern indie band is back with their ninth studio album, Thank You for Today, along with a highly anticipated fall tour stopping at Hard Rock Live in Orlando for its final set. Thank You for Today is Death Cab for Cutie’s follow up to 2015’s Kintsugi, frontman Ben Gibbard’s recorded rumination of his hurtful divorce from actress Zooey Deschanel. While Kintsugi stands as the reason why serious Death Cab fans have yet to watch New Girl, the band’s latest album shows Gibbard’s determination to embrace the sun’s rising on a new normal. Thank You for Today sounds like a quickly-sketched road map for a mind learning to be present and reflect on the beauty of the now—moments of conscious wisdom bypassed by landscapes painted with questions and answers one faces in life after letting go. Throughout the album, Gibbard ponders the unavoidable truth of reality after heartbreak, yet can’t help himself from enjoying the serenity of the moment, however temporary. He softly admits this thought in the track, “When We Drive,” as he sings, “I can’t
expect you to be honest / Or to be faithful every day ’til the end / I just need you to be always a friend.” With Gibbard’s newfound prudence comes a well-rounded maturity that was not yet in its full form in the band’s early years. In the album’s opening number, “I Dreamt We Spoke Again,” Gibbard unashamedly confesses that the memories of a painful past and dreams of what could have been will always linger, but these are far too transient to remain in the light of day. The 42-year-old singer has always been the quiet voice of youthful angst, expressing the universality of romantic confusion while gaining underground legendary status with songs like “I Will Follow You into the Dark,” but 2018’s Gibbard manages to be refined without becoming re-defined. On Thank You for Today, Gibbard and bandmates Nick Harmer, Jason McGerr, Dave Depper, and Zac Rae have harnessed their quintessential sound of friendly melancholy that echoes the light, moody appeal of Transatlanticism, even with the absence of founding guitarist Chris Walla, who exited the band in 2014.
Death Cab for Cutie continues to excel in the ability to couple Gibbard’s meaningful vocals with guitar-driven arrangements that tastefully emote, as always, the sonic adaptation of the band’s lyrical explorations. The album’s first single, “Goldrush,” is perhaps the most timely of the tracks, with a radio-ready melody framed by words that are forever faithful to the heart of Death Cab. Still true to his sweetly-skeptic self after two decades, Gibbard confronts the discontent of the modern age. “Oh how I feel like a stranger here / Searching for something that’s disappeared,” he sadly remarks on one of the album’s thematic highlights. Death Cab for Cutie’s Thank You for Today simultaneously seems like a penultimate album and a coming-ofage moment for a band that has grown up and grown on to become a timeless centerpiece of musical self-reflection. Experience Death Cab for Cutie and the wistful wonder of Thank You for Today live in Orlando on October 23.

IN THE KNOW
DON’T LET DEFAMATORY ONLINE REVIEWS BREAK THE BACKBONE OF YOUR BUSINESS Since grade school, each of us were taught that “sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.” While endearing, this adage is far from the truth in today’s day and age of online accessibility and interconnectedness. Words that may have only been heard by a small crowd before the advent of the internet, and perhaps spread to a few others in a confined vicinity, now have the capability of being viewed instantaneously by millions of people throughout the world with a simple click of a mouse or swipe of a finger. The ability to post comments and reviews on blogs, search engines, webpages, and social media is pervasive and has unfortunately opened the door to those with ulterior motives to post derogatory and untruthful statements about other people and businesses without censure. These statements have a particularly deleterious effect on businesses that thrive on customer service and satisfaction, and oftentimes can lead to a business’ demise. “Word-of-mouth” is rapidly becoming an antiquated referral basis for businesses where online reviews are quick to access and provide a plethora of information and seemingly “honest” opinions from third parties regarding services and products. Even where a referral derives from a non-online source, an online business review is oftentimes a determining factor for whether a potential client or customer will patronize or otherwise engage that business. The weight that is given to a negative online review is hefty, and has the devastating impact of deterring business from the company even where there are multiple positive reviews alongside it. In this regard, a single negative review can be so damaging to a company’s reputation that it is causes a loss in revenue, or even a total loss of business. Our office is constantly getting calls from businesses who have experienced a loss in revenue after such negative online reviews inquiring into what, if any, legal remedies are available to them. Many assume defamation laws require that the webpage or social media site hosting the content, such as Yelp, Google, or Amazon, take down any negative reviews that are untrue. However, the law does not require an online host or provider to do so. Online providers or hosts are protected by the Communications Decency Act, 47 U.S. Code § 230, which exempts online hosts and providers from liability for hosting statements made by third parties on their sites. As such, online hosts and providers are not on the hook for ensuring that the content posted on their sites, including reviews, are true, nor can they be forced to take down the untruthful negative content for the same reason. It is not, however, impossible to get an online provider or host to take down defamatory reviews. One way is to make a formal request directly to the online host or provider. There are instances in which certain online hosts and providers will voluntarily take defamatory reviews down, but there is no strict model for their doing so. For instance, an online host might take down a review upon a simple request in one instance, and then refuse in another
84
| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
instance to take down a similar review upon request. In truth, there appears to be no justification or reasoning for these decisions, and no real recourse to take against the online host or provider upon refusal. Another more effective way of getting an online host or provider to voluntarily take down a defamatory review is by court order. Online hosts and providers will oftentimes have policies of taking down a defamatory review upon receipt of a court order identifying the review as defamatory under state laws and ordering that it be taken down. In Florida, it is particularly difficult to obtain a takedown order against anyone, as the law generally states that equity will not enjoin actual or threatened defamatory statements. However, there appears to be a small window for obtaining such an order where there is proof to a reasonable certainty that the defamatory statement has intentionally interfered with a business relationship or contract. Another option in attempting to take down defamatory negative reviews is to go directly to the source of the post itself. In Florida, a statement by a person or entity is defamatory if it is an unprivileged false statement concerning another, published to a third party with knowledge or reckless disregard as to the falsity, which caused injury. Florida law does not, however, recognize a cause of action for pure opinions. So long as the required elements are present, an action may be filed against the “poster” of the review for monetary damages. In many cases, a party being sued for a false statement on an online review will oftentimes take the content down to avoid a lawsuit or continued litigation, and may even deter others with similar bad faith motives from making illegal defamatory reviews. Given the legal uncertainties associated with handling defamatory content online, it seems fair to say that defamatory reviews of a business are the literal equivalent to a stick or stone breaking a bone. Defamatory reviews do not have to break the backbone of your business, though. Businesses must familiarize themselves with their online presence on social media sites, webpages, and blogs and constantly patrol to brace for the impact of a negative review. Businesses must be ready to contact the content host or provider to initiate their take down policies, if applicable. Businesses must also give serious consideration to retaining legal counsel where necessary to protect their interests and navigate them through the uncertain legal areas of defamation.

CITY NEWS
IN CASE YOU
MISSED IT! By Riesa Pascal
Fall is upon us and the city is gearing up for the spookiest month of the year, but let’s not forget about all the fun that we just finished experiencing in September! Here are the highlights, just in case you missed it! All month long, Orlando satisfied cravings for haute cuisine at an even hotter price during Visit Orlando’s Magical Dining Month! For a limited time, more than 100 of Central Florida’s top restaurants featured three-course, prix fixe dinner menus for just $35, with $1 from each meal donated to Best Buddies and Down Syndrome Association of Central Florida. The popular culinary celebration pleased both diner’s palates and wallets across the city. The Epcot International Food & Wine Festival returned to Walt Disney World Resort this fall with 75 days of culinary demonstrations, beverage seminars, grand tasting events and, of course, a veritable cornucopia of wonderful food and tasty beverages. This year’s festival will continue its tradition of fine dining events, appearances by top celebrity chefs, and a slate of “Eat to the Beat” concerts all the way up till November 12th so don’t miss out on the food and fun! Rock the Universe is two nights of powerful music from Christian Rock’s brightest stars at Universal Studios Florida. This year’s event returned to the park from September 7th-8th and featured award-winning artists including Casting Crowns, Jesus Culture, TobyMac, and For King & Country. Guests also enjoyed a candle lighting ceremony on Saturday and the FanZone featuring more live performances and electronic dance music spun by Sarah Reeves and DJ PROMOTE. The Florida SMASH Beer Festival was created to celebrate the creativity and camaraderie of the brewers in the Sunshine State and to provide an opportunity to give back to the community. On September 8th, participating breweries presented a beer concocted from the same single malt and single hop. This limitation forced brewers to think outside the box and focus on outstanding technique. With roughly 80 beers to sample including one-offs from every brewery involved, there was something to please everyone! Held at Reiter Park, proceeds from the delicious event went to the benefit of the Sharing Center.

Lakeridge Winery debuted an all new event on September 8th and I think it’s safe to say Orlando is
looking forward to this becoming an annual tradition! The Lakeridge Winery Wine & Cheese Festival featured all the Lakeridge festival standards including live music, Lakeridge wine by the glass, beer, soft drinks, and a variety of food is available for purchase. Guests also enjoyed a special complimentary wine tasting including samples of cheese paired with some of their best selling wines. No one knows how to party like the leading luxury lifestyle publication in Orlando, but we gave the city a good reminder on September 5th at our September Issue Unveiling Party! Held at the renowned club at Bella Collina, VIP guests were dressed to the nines in gorgeous cocktail attire as they enjoyed delectable bites, complimentary cocktails, luxury watch & handbag vendors, gift bags, an exotic vehicle display, event photographers and more. It was a beautiful evening of celebration with many of the city’s top lawyers featured in our legal elite spotlight. With the return of Praise Wave Music Festival on September 15th and 22nd, guests celebrated Christian fellowship and fun at SeaWorld Orlando. Uplifting, live concerts from the hottest names in Christian music lit up the stage at Nautilus Theater at 1:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. In between musical performances by such famed artists as include Michael W. Smith and Newsboys, guests also enjoyed SeaWorld’s thrilling rides, shows, and attractions. Established in 2003, the Global Peace Film Festival uses the power of the moving image to further the cause of peace on earth. This year’s event was held at the Enzian Theater from September 18th-23rd and featured a festival program carefully curated to create a place for open dialogue, using the films as catalysts for change. This year’s festival theme reflected “Life In Motion” and featured a portrait of Sarah Kamsin, a daughter and granddaughter of Sudanese immigrants. On September 29th, runners across the city got to experience the excitement of Lake Nona with the Run Nona 5K, an Orlando gem that brings the party! The race ends at a action-packed block party filled with trendy food trucks and fabulous music at the Lake Nona Town Center. The Nemours Kids’ Run and Zone occupied the littlest runners with engaging activities as the adults parties and celebrated their accomplishments. This year Run Nona is celebrating 11 years!

APPLE CIDER OLD FASHIONED
A new spin on an old classic. The Old Fashioned is an all-time classic. This cocktail is usually made by muddling sugar with bitters, then adding alcohol, whiskey and finally a twist of citrus rind. Now, there’s nothing wrong with how it is, but in case you fancy a change, we are here to give a new take on the classic drink. The Apple Cider Old Fashioned has apple instead of orange and a cinnamon stick for some spice. It’s an excellent drink to have at a party (Halloween party?), since it has the typical fall scents and flavors! Here is what you’ll need...
1/2 c. ice 2/3 c. apple cider 2 oz. whiskey 2 dashes Angostura bitters Apple slices, for garnish Cinnamon sticks, for garnish The directions are very simple. Just mix it all up and then serve over ice, and you’re done! An easy yet effective drink to get the party started. Enjoy!
