publisher’s note

> By now, most of us have completed our income tax returns and will hopefully receive some much needed financial enhancement in the form of a rebate check from Uncle Sam. Rather than hoard the cash as some media specialists are advising and earning interest rates close to zero, why not just buck the trend and give both yourself and the economy a treat by putting some of the money back into circulation? Besides, we need to see the local economy pick up so locals supporting locals would be a great boost to our neighborhood merchants. Next, we need the credit markets to relax and begin providing the financing required for operational and new job growth. Fear and hesitation to assist small business investment needs to abate so that business growth may flourish once again. Orlando Style has made it even more affordable than ever to get your business advertised properly and if we work together we can develop a plan to maximize your exposure to the marketplace. Trust us to show you how we accomplish this and we are certain our readers will perform by visiting and patronizing your establishment.

As most know, April 1 begins our annual subscription campaign. This year, for the first time we are offering new and renewal subscribers a chance to win a special $1,000 reward. Please check out the details at www.StyleToMe.com/aprilspecial A special note of “congratulations” to the winners of the “Readers Choice” awards and also to those other participating candidates; the voting tabulations were very close in most instances which proves that the Orlando business environment is extremely competitive. Kudos to all! Last, our hearts go out to those people in Japan who have suddenly become impacted by the recent mammoth earthquake and numerous resultant aftershocks, resulting in the unimaginable devastation that has befallen them. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. For all of us here at home, we ask that you make a generous contribution toward the recovery effort so that our allied friends can soon return to normalcy from this tragedy of immense proportion.<

Sincerely, Now is also a good time for business advertisers to take advantage of a new rate concept which will help present your product(s) or services within our demographic map so please call me directly at (321) 281-4589. I’ll tell you about our new ‘Results Package’ and how you can become a part of our advertising messaging which reaches thousands of people. You will be pleased to learn that we can design a program to fit almost any budget, with prices starting at only $49! Discover why we have become Orlando’s #1 magazine and allow us the opportunity to perform some ‘magic’ for you!

Biras Creek Resort A HIDDEN OASIS IN THE STUNNING BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS

By: Cathleen K. Bode Photos courtesy of Biras Creek Resort Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> The British Virgin Islands are comprised of approximately 50 lush islands situated east of Puerto Rico in the Caribbean Sea. Known for their world-class sailing, friendly people, a high standard of living, political stability, natural beauty and the absence of taxes.

The pristine waters and cool breezes of the surrounding North Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea create the ideal setting for some of the world’s best sailing. The British Virgin Islands (BVI) has often been called “The Yachting Capital of the World,” providing protected cruising where boaters are always in sight of land and sheltered anchorages are around every bend. The crystal-clear turquoise waters also offer some of the world’s best diving and snorkeling. Additionally, the island’s powder-white sand beaches tempt sunbathers, and its lush green mountains offer ample hiking trails. The third largest of the British Virgin Islands, Virgin Gorda is 10 miles long and two miles wide. It lies 12 miles east of Road Town,Tortola (capital of the British Virgin Islands) and approximately 30 miles northeast of St. Thomas, in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The lush landscape of Virgin Gorda is blanketed with Sea Grape and Tamarind along the beaches, and stretches of Mangrove around the marina and Deep Bay. Tucked in a private bay on Virgin Gorda, lies Biras Creek Resort, a hidden oasis set upon a 140 acre nature reserve amidst white sand beaches and the sparkling waters of the North Sound, Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. A member of the prestigious Relais & Chateaux hotel group, Biras Creek is a luxury boutique resort known for its island charm, exceptional hospitality, myriad of outdoors activities, and the finest dining in the BVI. Wild nutmeg, Frangipani, wild orchids and Diddle Doe Cactus dot the property, and can be enjoyed from the many walking paths and hiking trails that have been cleared

Elite Eye Care

::

Vision 20/20 In Style Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> In previous issues, we have presented a series featuring “Elite Doctors” in the Orlando area. In this month’s issue, we concentrate on Doctors of Optometry (OD) and Doctors of Ophthalmology (MD), both being providers of vision care. Most colleges of Optometry first require successful completion of a four-year undergraduate degree beginning with courses in General Biology and Chemistry, Algebra and Trigonometry, followed by advanced studies in Organic Chemistry, Microbiology, Bacteriology, Calculus, Physics, Physiology, Biochemistry, Anatomy, etc. OD candidates must then successfully complete an additional fouryear accredited degree program at one of the twenty (20) colleges of Optometry, so the educational investment is extremely rigorous, time consuming and also requires a substantial financial commitment. Optometrists perform examinations to diagnose vision problems such as near or farsightedness, test for depth and color perception, ability to focus, glaucoma and other eye related conditions caused by diabetes or high blood pressure. Although they do not perform eye surgery as in Ophthalmology, OD’s prescribe and fit eyeglasses, contact lenses, certain medications to treat vision problems or eye diseases and provide vision therapy and rehabilitation. Ophthalmologists, on the other hand must be medical doctors (MD’s) prior to studying Ophthalmology, then they must complete a three to five year residency in an approved program and must pass an examination to become certified. Ophthalmologists are licensed for all aspects of eye care including diagnosis, management and surgery of ocular diseases and disorders. He or she receives a minimum of 12 years of education beyond high school. We are pleased to present a pristine collection of specialty eye care physicians practicing in our area. <

1SZSP`ObW]\ 3gS 1O`S Dr. Margaret Grand is a graduate of The New England College of Optometry in Boston, Massachusetts. She is in partnership with her husband Dr. Ronald Grand. Both are Board Certified Optometric physicians. Their daughter Michele Grand works with them and is a Florida Board Certified Optician. Dr. Margaret Grand did two internships at Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem, Israel. One internship in pathology, and the other in pediatric low vision. Before moving to Florida she had a private practice in Newport, RI and was on the staff at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston, Massachusetts. After moving to Florida, she was asked by the developers of Celebration if she and her husband would open a practice in Celebration and be the eye doctors there. They opened the practice in 1996. While in Celebration they have worked with Florida Hospital at Celebration Health participating in their Health Fairs. They also have worked with Disney in fitting many of their characters with contact lenses and have done one film and supplied eyewear for several commercials. They have worked with the Atlanta Braves during their Spring Training. Dr. Margaret Grand is a member of the American Optometric Association and the Florida Optometric Association. She has served as an examiner for the Florida Board of Optometry. Dr. Margaret Grand is past president of the Rotary Club of Celebration and past president of the Celebration Area Council for the Osceola Chamber of Commerce. Celebration Eye Care is located in beautiful downtown Celebration. It is a primary Optometric practice for the entire family.

Dr. Grand feels all family members should have annual comprehensive eye examinations. In children, as they grow and develop, their eyes grow and change. While they are in school there is a great demand on their visual systems, if the children can not see it, they can not learn it. For adults, it’s like having an eye physical, for there are many things that can go wrong with the eye that are painless. In their eye examinations, Celebation Eye examines the whole visual system including the general health of the eye. They examine and follow patients with cataracts, diabetes, and other systemic diseases that can affect the eye. They treat and follow patients with glaucoma, macular degeneration, dry eyes, Latisse treatments, and do all pre and post operative care for Lasik. Celebration Eye Care specializes in contact lenses. They fit regular and color contact lenses and also fit cosmetic lenses for patients who have disfiguring eye diseases or eye injuries. They also fit lenses for astigmatism, bifocal, and theatrical contact lenses. Their optical is a beautiful area consisting of over 1000 frames to choose from. They carry many designer frames and sunglasses. Some of the designers carried consist of Dolce and Gabbana, Gucci, Giorgio Armani, Dior, Cole Haan,Versace, Burberry, Jimmy Choo, Prada, and Oakley. They offer all types of lenses, coatings and tints to accommodate and customize all visual needs, including sports, computer, driving, reading and hobbies.

Q: I am in my late 30’s and still

experience breakouts. Will it ever stop?

A: Studies have shown that up to

30% of women have breakouts well into adulthood. The causes of these breakouts are multi-factorial and are influenced by genetic, hormonal, and stress-related components. The good news, there are a variety of highly effective treatments available. As a Dermatologist, I successfully treat thousands of patients every year with acne from teenagers to adults in their 40’s & 50’s. Because of this, I have a very deep understanding of the factors that cause acne and the most effective courses of treatment. My patients have seen first hand that clear skin is achievable with the assistance of an experienced Dermatologist and a course

of treatment tailored to the unique needs of each patient. Your first step, make an appointment to see a Dermatologist.

Q: It seems that mineral cosmetics are all the rage. Can you tell me more?

A: Mineral make-up IS all the

rage and rightfully so. At my office, we carry Glo Minerals®, as we believe it to be the gold standard in mineral-based cosmetics. Our patients absolutely love it and this is why - Mineral makeup consists purely of minerals and pigments found in nature. Glo Minerals® is all natural and free of ingredients that can harm the skin. It is noncomedogenic which means that it won’t clog your pores or cause breakouts. Additionally, mineral

makeup foundations and powders are considered physical sunscreens because they utilize physical blockers such as titanium dioxide to reflect the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Natural ingredients, like mica, make mineral makeup a good choice for sensitive or easily irritated skin types as well. It’s even safe to use a couple weeks after non-invasive treatments like chemical peels or laser procedures. Dr. Palceski looks forward to hearing from you and will be accepting questions at drp@reflectionsdermatology.com Dr. Palceski is a Board Certified Dermatologist and Dermatologic Surgeon and is the founder of Reflections Dermatology & Center for Skin Care. Something to Go ‘Nuts’ Over Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> Nuts provide a good amount of magnesium, boron and zinc, which are essential for bone health. They are an excellent source of the antioxidant mineral manganese. All nuts are a good source of the antioxidant vitamin E, folic acid, copper, and the amino acid arginine, which is a precursor of human growth hormone. Nuts are high in fiber and phytochemicals that protect against cancer and other chronic diseases. Nuts contain polyphenols, a type of antioxidant thought to be instrumental in relieving oxidative stress, a causative factor for neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, experiments in which volunteers were fed nuts as part of their diet for several weeks have found that almonds, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, peanuts, pecans, pistachio nuts, and walnuts all alter the composition of the blood in ways that reduce coronary risk and provided other health benefits along the way.

Got Fat? Almonds: Particularly nutritious, with 100 grams

yielding 16.9 grams of protein. A 1.5-ounce handful of almonds is also a leading source of vitamin E and magnesium and offer fiber, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, and iron. These nutrients can prevent cancer and heart disease. Brazil Nuts: Extremely rich in selenium containing

2,500 times more than any other nut. Selenium can prevent prostate cancer; delay the aging process and boost mood and mental performance. Only three Brazil nuts a day will provide your dailyrecommended allowance of selenium. Hazelnuts: An excellent source for B1, B2 and

B6 vitamins, essential vitamins in blood formation and mental health. Hazelnuts contain nearly 91 percent monounsaturated fat and less than four percent saturated fat. This can lower cholesterol levels as part of a low saturated fat diet. Macadamia Nuts: High in monounsaturated

fatty acid (“good “ fat), which can help reduce overall cholesterol levels. Contain potent antioxidants, including vitamin E, which can help protect against cancer and heart disease. They are also a good source of magnesium, which is essential for bone growth. Peanuts: Not technically a nut, but a legume

related to beans and lentils. Zero cholesterol and high in nutrients like vitamin E, which protects against cancer and other diseases. Peanuts and peanut butter are a good source of protein and contain more of the “good” unsaturated fat. Pecans: Rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids,

which can significantly improve the cholesterollowering properties of a heart-healthy diet. Also has high nutrition value, with zinc to help guard against infections, vitamin E to protect against cancer and vitamin A to help keep your complexion clear. Pistachios: Highest levels of phytosterols of

any nut, which makes them the best at lowering cholesterol. A 1-ounce serving of pistachios equals 49 nuts- more nuts per serving than any other nut and containing more that 10 percent of your daily requirements of dietary fiber. Walnuts:Extremely, high levels of healthy omega-3

and omega 6 fatty acids, which can significantly lower cholesterol. With a 7:1 ratio of saturated fat, walnuts are one of the highest naturally occurring sources of polyunsaturated “good “ fats. <

Rebirth of a Legend

growler E 2 0 1 1 Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> In 2011, the legendary Jaguar E-Type will celebrate its 50th anniversary, as it was first presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 1961. On the occasion of this anniversary and upon the request of a Swiss businessman who wishes to stay anonymous, the designers Bo Zolland from Vizualtech and Robert Palm have developed an exceptional sports car inspired by the legend. Based on the Jaguar XKR with a supercharged 5.0 Liter V8, the Growler E 2011 Concept produces 600 hp instead of the 510 hp of the XKR, thanks to engine remapping. The composite body is glued on a chassis made of a central carbon fibre core, on which two tubular frames are bolted at the front and rear, supporting engine, steering, transmission and suspensions. The majority of the components and the interior gear are taken from the Jaguar XKR. Thanks to a

lighter chassis, the weight is only 1550 kg, about 200 kg less than the Jaguar XKR, which serves as technical basis. The expected performance should therefore be sensibly better than on the Jaguar XKR, which is already extremely fast. 0-100 km/h should stay under 4 seconds. Some people don’t like the direction taken lately by Jaguar design, initiated by the Jaguar XF and confirmed by the new XJ. There are still many friends of the noble English brand who are nostalgic of the sensual shapes of the XK 120, Mark II, XJ6 and, last but not least, the fantastic Jaguar E-Type. This project was born in the mind of one of these nostalgic fans, who wanted to see the original style again, but up to date and with the latest technology.

A Celebration Worth Barking For Neiman Marcus’ Spring Fashion Party

By: Dana Damato Photo By: Brion Price Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> Tis the season for corals, floral, white on white, boho, and stripes! Neiman Marcus put together yet another season opening fashion show event that has proven to be the best yet. What could possibly make each of their events so memorable that guests leave completely satisfied? Was it the mouth watering Prime Rib and the signatureWaldorf Salad catered by the culinary geniuses of the Waldorf Astoria Orlando? Maybe it was the table of endless wine set up for the silent auction or the bubbling Champagne being sipped amongst the crowds of chattering guests filling up the entire two floors of Neiman Marcus. As much as all the small details made this event worthwhile, the one that left a warm smile on everyone’s face were all the four legged furry friends that caught our attention, perhaps a little differently then a Prada dress (although we do love those). On March 3rd, taking over the spotlight on the runway was none other than man’s best friend. Neiman Marcus collaborated a flash mob performance, a fashion show, and a celebrity dog fashion show to lift spirits, celebrate fashion, and to welcome in the spring season. A celebration cocktail hour jumpstarted an evening that consisted of

styletome.com

music, food, giveaways, raffles, and of course, mingling with fellow attendees before the big show. Awaiting the runway show as attendees took their seats; an unexpected twist tactic was used to throw the crowd off guard, a surprise flash mob. Opening the show singing Season of Love from Rent was the Central Florida Community Choir that resulted in an upbeat performance that was admired by all.

It wasn’t long before these

superstar dogs came strutting their stuff and wagging

their tails down the runway with their owners.

The reason behind this pooch friendly fashion event was to help raise money to benefit Canine Companions for Independence, a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. Intertwining their walks with the actual models were the local Canine Companions, (working dogs and pups in training) as

well as local celebrities and their dogs. Presented in segments were elegant and stylishly dressed fashion models presenting the best new styles for this season. It wasn’t long before these superstar dogs came strutting their stuff and wagging their tails down the runway with their owners. These pups owners are locals you may have seen on TV, heard on the radio, or maybe had represent you in a lawsuit. Joining their pups down the runway was Bob Frier and his handsome pooch, Biscuit, Scott McKenzie and Coco, Ann Sonntag with Sonny, and John and Ultima Morgan with their babes you may have seen on TV, Emma and Alli, and many more. It was no doubt that these furry friends loved every minute of walking the runway, stopping occasionally for a sniff or two, and getting as much attention as possible (dogs really do have huge egos). As the show came to a close, each attendee surely made their way out with the same reaction, “wow!” From all of the spectators who were fortunate enough to be a part of this fun filled and fashionable event, it is a fact that every detail of this party made every guest put their hands (and paws) together for Neiman Marcus for hosting another successful fashion celebration.<

Dwight Howard 1. “Me. I can go with the Euro cuts on the suits, the nice fitted shirts and the nice fitted jeans. I can pretty much wear anything. I am well-rounded.” 2. “Brandon Bass.” 3. “I would say Gucci or Louis (Vuitton).” 4. “If a woman likes it that means it looks good.” Jameer Nelson

Brandon Bass 1. “Truthfully? Myself. Well, I think it is between me and J.J. (Redick).” 2.“Dwight and Jameer both picked me? Really? Wow, I have to leave. I just think they admire how I dress. I don’t even dress myself so how do I try too hard?

1. “Me and J.J. (Redick) because we keep it basic. J.J. has a great style. I think we both dress pretty well. The thing with us is we don’t go outside our limitations. We don’t try to impress anyone. Dwight (Howard) has a good style too.”

3. “Probably Louis Vuitton or Gucci.”

2. “Brandon Bass.”

Otis Smith

3. “Gucci.”

1. “I’d say it’s a push between J.J (Redick) and Dwight (Howard). Well if you are talking overall and not just when they are wearing suits than I’d have to say J.J. Redick. Now if you get Dwight to stop wearing those tank tops, then he’d be alright.”

4. “The key to dressing well would be to be nice and neat and basic.”

Tiger Woods HUMAN BEING By: Cathleen K. Bode Photo By: Brion Price Read more at: StyleToMe.com

2011 Tavistock Cup - Isleworth Golf & Country Club

styletome.com

Celebrity Profile

> It was good to see Tiger recently in competition at the 2011 Tavistock Cup. Although he appeared to have lost some weight and appeared less muscular than we have seen him when he was ‘mowing down’ most of his adversaries in an earlier time, he was still in good shape and back in the game taught to him by his father as a little boy, long ago. We all saw Tiger as that special being, in love with a game that he poured his heart and soul into in such a remarkable manner, with such ease, almost effortlessly...a true natural. What we never got to see but subconsciously guessed had occurred were the real struggles to succeed, the endless hours of practice, the intense discipline and all the other sacrifices he and his family must have endured. Mere mortals just don’t awaken one day to discover they were born with the magical ability to reach the top of their profession without dripping blood, sweat and tears. It seems that few could grasp the idea that when his dad passed away, Tiger suddenly lost that one person he could look to for all the answers. Without his father in his everyday life to guide him and keep him in disciplined balance, it appeared that Tiger’s world had tilted somewhat. We couldn’t see it in his game performance but the dirty little secrets hovered close to the surface until one-by-one a host of mysterious women suddenly discovered that they were really not the “one” and that they belonged to a long line of mistresses, exclusive of his wife, whom he regretfully cast aside with this revelation of being unfaithful through his ‘sexual improprieties’. That quiet appeal suddenly disintegrated. Perhaps we might understand the possibility that Tiger never had a normal life as we know it. After all, how many of us have experienced the kind of euphoric and meteoric rise to prominence as he did? We all

put him on a Godlike pedestal because of his amazing athletic ability, while displaying all the signs of being a well-mannered, softspoken family man. Now, we were all ready to forgive his actions if only he could win again, get back on top, a “winner” ala Charlie Sheen! Unfortunately, that day hasn’t yet arrived and the sportswriters seem to conclude that #1 for Tiger might never happen again. What if this Godlike creature of the world of golf never sits atop the throne again? We wonder if their own, fragile, manly egos cannot be forgiven when they screw up. Or could it be of our own personal embarrassment that we need him to win, to save face and heal and forgive our own indiscretions?

::

death. We are not implying that Tiger’s actions could ever be justifiable nor that we reward our top athletes by overpaying them because of our insatiable appetite to look up to someone greater than us because of their special abilities nor that we like to tear them apart when they are less than perfect. When we look at ourselves in the mirror is it so horrifying to discover that we are just ever-so-fragile human beings, looking for a social outlet or belonging; to be loved and adored? A short time ago we had the opportunity to see Tiger Woods in another light and asked him to write to a father that had just lost his son to cancer. This is what he wrote, pure, simple and from his heart:

Further, Tiger’s fall from grace had to be lonely and humiliating and not very cost effective. Think of all the lucrative financial endorsements that flew by the wayside as mothers dictated to their children that Tiger should no longer be looked up to. Perhaps they need to teach their kids a little humility and forgiveness. We suspect Tiger lies awakened many nights with tears of sorrow rolling down his cheeks thinking of how to fix the mess and moving forward with his life. If we examine our own lives most of us have done something that wasn’t considered acceptable, specifically if it involved being unfaithful. Betrayal by any other description is still betrayal and some can work through it while others reach a breaking point where the pain and devastation of a mate being adulterous can be worse than

Sometimes, even good people become lost in themselves. Mr. Woods has done some great things, big and small and on the flip side has made mistakes. He needs to forgive himself and regain his balance and we as human beings must have the ability to forgive.<

> Spring is here, so what does that mean? Summer is just around the corner! It is vital that our bodies look their absolute best during the months it will be exposed the most. For this spring season, these celebs know exactly what to do to keep themselves in shape and feel fabulous while doing it. The trends in diet and fitness are always changing in Hollywood, leaving us to wonder who is doing what and the best new way to keep a slender silhouette. More recently, trends seem to follow the same pattern amongst the stars and it is the most simple of them all; working out and eating healthy. Gwyneth Paltrow’s spring diet consists of a seven-day elimination. Her trick includes liquid meals and snacks (lemon water, coconut milk and occasional handfuls of berries and almonds). “I like to fast and detox a couple of times during the year, the most hardcore one being the Master Cleanse... It was not pretty, or easy. It did work, however.” Or

take it from the all American beauty, Jessica Biel, who follows a strict diet that bans salt, dairy, sugar, and flour. Biel said she would eat several small meals every few hours to keep her metabolism revved up and to get her through an intense workout schedule. A noticeably trimmer Jennifer Lopez has said that her only diet is a strategy of eating anything she wants in moderation. However, when this American Idol judge wants to drop some weight, she cuts out the carbs and hits the gym. Coming from a mother of four, Brooke Burke has taken Pilates for around 10 years, but when she’s not working out, she focuses on her nutrition. She never starves herself, eats regularly, and occasionally splurges on pizza and chocolate chip cookies. If a team effort is what you need to stay motivated, exercise lover and Hollywood beauty, Cameron Diaz and beau Alex Rodriguez are the epitome of a duo who stays in shape. Being spotted numerous times keeping up their fitness by join-

ing in grueling boot camp style and regular workouts that consists of activities like surfing, hiking and paddle boarding. The beloved singer, Carrie Underwood, managed to go from size 6 to 2 by following a regular workout program and also a well balanced diet plan. Her secret is to always have breakfast; this gives you lasting energy throughout the day to complete your daily activities. Moreover you should also skip drinking alcohol and sugary drinks and in lieu of them, drink more water and teas. Getting in shape like a Red Carpet celeb is easier to obtain then you may think, and we all want to look our best for the moment we hit the beach. Now is the time to get rid of all those high calorie snacks in your pantry, get outside and exercise, and before you know it you will be showing off a trim and slender bikini fit body! <

Alicia Silverstone Talks Environment By: Flavia Robinson Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> Mostly known for her unforgettable leading role as Cher in the hit block-buster “Clueless” and expecting her first child, Alicia Silverstone is now 34, vegan, environmental activist and proud author of New York Times best-seller “The Kind Diet: A Simple Guide to Losing Weight, Feeling great and Saving the Planet.” For the first time at the University of Central Florida, she spoke about her plant-based diet and how it contributes to the well being of our planet.

1. How did you decide to become a vegan and what made you write your book? I’ve always known intuitively I didn’t want to be responsible for hurting animals, but I was in total denial. I loved animals and was still eating them. At the time, I was 21, on a steak and doughnut diet and I didn’t look my best. It was while driving home from an animal activism meeting that I decided things had to change. Shortly after, it felt like this whole weight was lifted off of me and I just felt lighter walking into to the world. “The Kind Diet” came along because I wanted people to know the truth about little choices they make everyday and how

styletome.com

they impact not only their lives, but also the entire world. 2. Being a celebrity in Hollywood, did responding to the pressure of looking good have anything to do with this transformation? At the time I was at the height of my career. People would comment on my body a lot and I had a rebellious reaction against it because I didn’t become an actress to get famous and have this kind of attention. Acting was my passion and felt therapeutic, so I didn’t really care about all the pressure. 3. Is it possible to be vegan and not feel food deprived? Because I’m so balanced and my body is getting the nutrients it needs, I’m so nourished I never feel food deprived or have any cravings. I’m naturally a food snob but there are so many different recipes to try and the options are endless. 4. What’re your tricks to be environmentally friendly with style? I like shopping for vintage clothes; both

the dress and jacket I’m wearing right now are used. My first stop shopping for anything are my local thrift stores and eBay. The things you find at these places are so unique, fairly priced, and beautiful. “Embodies” makes great underwear made of organic cotton I love. 5. Any vegan restaurant in Orlando you’d recommend for those who would like to try vegan food? I’ve been to Ethos in downtown Orlando, this great little vegan restaurant. One of the best things about following this path is how delicious the food is. 6. What would you say to those who are not vegans but somehow want to contribute to saving the planet? There are simple things you can do. I know we all understand not to use plastic bottles, but we should really try not to. If you are a coffee drinker, bring your own mug when getting your daily coffee. Think of the one little thing you can do everyday, that’s easy to do and could change the world.<

Do I Qualify for a Loan Modification? By: Mark NeJame Contributor: Catherina Chang Watters Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> Under Obama’s Making Home Affordable (MHA) Plan, every Homeowner who is struggling to make mortgage payments and is in financial distress is entitled to apply for a loan modification. The latest MHA data reveals that Homeowners in permanent loan modifications have seen their monthly payments cut by a median of 40%. That is over $4.5 billion in reduced mortgage obligations in the last year. It’s no wonder more and more Homeowners are asking, “Do I qualify for a loan modification?” In a loan modification, a Homeowner is asking the bank to lose money on the original loan and modify it at new terms. If it is in the Lender’s best interest to modify the loan and the Homeowner can show they can stay current on the new payments, then the Lender is more likely to approve the modification. An increasing number of Homeowners are at risk of losing their homes, not because they paid over market value, or because they are living beyond their means, but because the market decline combined with financial hardship has rendered their mortgage obligations impossible to meet. Low income, moderate to middle, and even high-income homeowners are struggling to stay current on their loans. Due to the housing market decline, many people now owe more than their home is worth. So what is the incentive for Homeowners to remain in their homes? For one, the government is requiring Lenders to reduce interest rates down to as low as 2%, and in some cases to permanently reduce the principal in order to achieve a mortgage payment that is no more than 31% of the Homeowner’s gross (pretax) monthly income; thereby making their payments affordable. Housing Affordable Modification Program (HAMP) is just one of the programs available to Homeowners under Obama’s Plan. To qualify

styletome.com

for HAMP, you must: 1) occupy the house as your primary residence; 2) have obtained your mortgage on or before January 1, 2009; 3) have a mortgage payment that is more than 31% of your monthly gross (pretax) income; 4) owe up to $729,750 on your home; and 5) show a financial hardship and are either delinquent on your payments or are in danger of falling behind. This criterion is for guidance only. For example, Homeowners with jumbo loans are not excluded from these programs. Every Homeowner has a unique situation that must be individually evaluated. If you don’t qualify under MHA, you may still be able to negotiate a loan modification under one of the Lender’s In-House programs. You have the option to contact your Lender directly, but don’t be surprised if you are instantly denied. The process may appear as simple as filling out a form and answering some financial questions; however, it is difficult to know exactly how each Lender will process the information you submit in determining whether to approve your modification. You may have also noticed several companies advertising Foreclosure Rescue and Loan Modification Services, but I would be wary, as many are operating illegally due to a recent change in legislation. Beware of scammers who pretend to have direct relationships with your Lender and guarantee specific results. The safest approach is to contact an experienced attorney to evaluate your financial and legal situation and help determine if a loan modification is the best legal strategy for you.< For more information please visit www.StyleToMe.com Mark NeJame

Orlando Now

Nearing 50 Million Visitors, Putting People Back to Work By: Gary C. Sain President and CEO, Visit Orlando Read more at: StyleToMe.com

>Breaking records within travel and tourism industry is nothing new for Orlando. Over the past 26 years, we’ve only had three years where we saw a decline in total visitation (2001, 2006 and 2009). It’s easy to see why. Orlando has the most unique and diverse set of attractions, hotels, dining and entertainment options and we keep adding more. We are a global destination that competes with the likes of Paris,Tokyo, New York and Rome for leisure visitors. We also compete on a global stage for conferences and business meetings. The Orange County Convention Center is the second largest convention center in the United States and our convention and meetings hotels are well known and respected among meeting and event professionals. Plus, we’ve seen significant investment in the destination with new hotel and resort products, and the addition of new attractions at our worldrenowned theme parks. Tourism Economics recently released the forecast for visitation to Orlando in 2010 and they forecast in 2010 total visitation to Orlando grew by 6.9 percent to 49.79 million. That is up from 2009 when overall visitation had decreased to 46.5 million. If the forecast holds true, that would move us closer to the magical 50 million-visitor mark. Even more good news for Orlando is that Tourism Economics expects 51.3 million leisure and business travelers will come to Orlando in 2011 – making it the first time

styletome.com

Orlando and any destination in the United States – has welcomed 50 million visitors; a huge accomplishment. So what does all this mean for our residents? Jobs! For every 85 incremental overnight visitors that arrive in Orlando, a job is created. And at a time when Orlando’s unemployment rate is still in the double digits, it means that we’re creating new opportunities for our residents. Many of the jobs that will be created are more than entrylevel positions. New hotel openings create jobs at all levels of operations; from housekeeping and front desk duties to sales and management positions. New construction at our theme parks and attractions creates jobs for local contractors and suppliers. And more visitors mean more people exploring our dining options, arts, golf and entertainment and our unique shopping. All of this means jobs for our residents, increased tax receipts for our region and the state. For our region to have a vibrant and strong economy we need our travel and tourism sector to lead the way. The good news is that we are seeing a rebound and that means good news for Orlando. It also means that we have turned the corner and a recovery is happening. Putting smiles on the faces of visitors is what Orlando does; putting people back to work means a better future for our economy.<

Mardi Gras at Universal Studios - photo by Universal Studios

> While snowbirds up north are still bundled up under endless layers of clothing, down here in Florida we have long retired the occasional light sweater and are in ‘full bloom’ to enjoy a long warm season. The nice weather brought ‘outdoor parties,’ Mardi Gras and several other festivities that kept us wanting more heat! The American Advertising FederationOrlando ADDY Awards gala kicked off with a sizzling theme--Las Vegas Fight Night, which meant that you could come dressed as a boxer - if you felt like it. I love gala event like the ADDY’s, because they are amazing opportunities to meet some of the cities most creative people! This year’s Best of Show should be no surprise - it was awarded to Universal Orlando Resort for the amazing Wizarding World of Harry Potter Website. The 20th Annual Florida Film Festival premiered a series of parties and special events celebrating what’s best in current cinema with the Sneak Preview Party in Maitland. Set on a porch surrounded by a beautiful landscape, guests were welcomed with signature cocktails and invited to sit back and relax to enjoy a series of cutting edge film screenings. Celebrating the grand re-opening of the Citrus Club could not have been done with more style. Enjoying tasty hors d’ oeuvres and specialty drinks as live music filled the air. The evening not only revealed the social club’s $ 4 million in renovations and amenities but also benefited Edgewood Children’s

here in Orlando and celebrated Mardi Gras at Universal Studios. Spectacular street parades, authentic Cajun food, and concerts by OneRepublic and Pitbull shook the theme park and spread Mardi Gras beads and celebrative spirit all over town. Festivities will continue through April.

Speaking of sophistication,Mission Inn Resort and Club brought in a display of world’s finest automobiles, motorcycles, watercraft and luxury lifestyle products with their Festivals of Speed at this beautiful 1000acre resort. The weekend “retreat” as guests like to call it allowed them to experience products on an intimate level, allowing speed lovers of all kinds to closely inspect vehicles of varied makes such as Bugatti, Ferrari, Maserati, Fisker, Lamborghini, RollsRoyce, Bentley, BMW, Porsche, Mercedes Benz, Lotus, Audi, Aston-Martin, Ducati, do I need to say more?

Who wouldn’t enjoy chilling outdoors in this incredibly nice spring weather? Chillounge Night brought to Lake Eola what’s already a commonplace in South Beach. Chic lounge furniture, relaxing atmosphere and an opportunity to socialize among Orlando’s refined social crowd while looking over at Lake Eola’s cityscape guaranteed an enjoyable evening for those that attended the second annual event on March 26th. Highlights of the night included a Brazilian samba parade, fashion show produced by Roquois C. and an exciting fireworks display.

Wine sounds great on any day of the week, but Brio Tuscan Grille at Winter Park chose Wednesday as the official wine day! “Wine on Wednesday” made a great excuse to take a sip of the best wine selection while contributing to central Florida’s children in need as this event hosted by Fields BMW benefited New Hope For Kids. It was definitely a great opportunity to network with other wine lovers and sample Brio’s Tuscany dishes. One of the biggest perks of living in central Florida is being close to world famous tourist attractions. Rather than catching a costly flight to New Orleans, I stayed right

> Best Cellars: The Wait is Over - Leinenkugel’s Refreshing Summer Shady Makes a Much Anticipated Return for Parched Fans

> Leinenkugel’s best-selling lemonadeflavored seasonal brew returns for the Summer. The Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company, Chippewa Falls, Wis., announces the nationwide return of warm weather refresher, Summer Shandy. Leinenkugel’s was the first brewer to bottle a shandy-style brew in the U.S. and now offers Summer Shandy, available April through August, in cans, bottles and on draft. When Summer Shandy – an adventurous blend of select malted wheat and barley, lemonade flavor and a hint of Wisconsin

styletome.com

honey – went into hibernation last September fans raced to grab the last case. Since then, thousands of fans anxiously awaiting its return have inquired about making Summer Shandy, the 144-year-old brewer’s best-selling seasonal of all time, a year-round offering. The “shandy” (which is short for “shandygaff”) as it’s called in England and Germany, is typically a mixture of beer and soda or lemonade which has been enjoyed across Europe since the 17th century. Another variation of a shandy is the “radler” which is a German term for cyclist. In September 1922, Franz Xaver Kugler developed

the radler, when approximately 13,000 cyclists visited his tavern in Munich. His beer supply started to run out, so he cleverly mixed the remaining beer with lemonade and claimed to have created the blend especially for the cyclists. Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy features a tangy character with malty undertones of hops. Its tart lemon flavoring complements spicy and robust grilling dishes, and its subtle hoppiness creates the perfect balance for summertime salads. <

The Grammy for Best New Artist Goes To... By: Dana Damato Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> Esperanza Spalding? You heard right, but maybe you’ve never heard this new artist’s name on a mainstream radio or music station. The mystery behind the question which millions of people asked the moment her name was called, ‘Who is Esperanza Spalding?’ Grammy Awards 2011 winner for Best New artist, Esperanza Spalding broke the Bieber Fever, turning the heat on herself. This 25-year-old bassist, vocalist, and composer may just be the hope for the future of jazz and instrumental music. Born in Portland, Oregon into a single-parent home, Spalding discovered her passion for music at the tender age of 5. Spalding’s musical journey has taken her from small clubs in Portland to the stage

at the White House. However, this journey was anything but smooth for this prodigyturned-pro musician. Being raised in a neighborhood she describes as “ghetto” and “pretty scary,” Spalding learned early on the meaning of perseverance and moral character from the role model whom she holds in the highest regard to this day-her mother. The defining moment when Spalding knew that music would lead the path of her life was watching “Yo-Yo Ma” on Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood at 5 years old and realizing that she wanted to do something musical in her life. Little did she know that success was soon to follow later down the road. Being home-schooled for most of her life due to a lengthy childhood illness, Spalding found that she never quite fit into a tra-

ditional classroom setting. Her one pursuit that always made sense was music. Within one year, she taught herself how to play the violin well enough to land a spot in The Chamber Music Society of Oregon. Spending a significant ten years with the group, by 15 she excelled to a concertmaster position. Realizing at 16 that community orchestra wasn’t enough for this young teenager anymore, she moved her talents to local club circuits where she would play blues, funk, hip-hop, and a variety of other styles. Not long after, Spalding decided to leave high school for good, obtained a GED, and enrolled into the music program at Portland State University. Being the youngest and most inexperienced musician in her class, Spalding’s natural ability to play music shined through after earning a B.M. and signing on as an instructor in 2005 at the Berklee College of Music. At 20 years old, she was a recipient of the prestigious Boston Jazz Society scholarship for outstanding musicianship. Spalding’s journey as a solo artist began in May 2008 with the release of her debut record, Esperanza. The record became best selling album by a new jazz artist internationally in 2008 and was the highly acclaimed release for a worldwide audience to experience her talents as an instrumentalist, vocalist, and composer. After the release, Esperanza shot straight to the top of Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz chart where it remained for over 70 weeks. From there on out Spalding’s name spread like a wildfire, landing her spots on the Late Show with David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel Live, the CBS Saturday Early Show, the Travis Smiley Show, Austin City Limits, and National Public Radio. Other monumental moments for Spalding were two appearances at the White House, a Banana Republic ad campaign, the Jazz Journalists Association’s 2009 Jazz Award for Up and Coming Artist of the Year, the 2009 JazzWeek Award for Record of the Year, and several high profile tour dates. In early 2010, Spalding was noted in The New Yorker and was featured in O, The Oprah Magazine’s “Women on the Rise. She isn’t what mainstream music is. Spalding’s breathtaking music innovates an element of jazz, folk, and world music into the foundations of classical chamber music traditions. She is a star on the rise and the journey of this brilliant and gifted young artist is just beginning. In her August 2010 release of Chamber Music Society promotes a product that exudes an immense level of sophisticated intimacy that brings warm and comforting tones to its listeners. Winning the Grammy Award for Best New Artist may be the first but certainly not the last you will see or hear of Esperanza Spalding as stating in her acceptance speech, “I take this honor to heart so sincerely and I’ll do my damndest to make a whole lot of great music for all of you.<

LOOK FABULOUS Straight Talk About Sun Protection By George H. Pope, MD, FACS People often ask me, “What is the most important thing I can do to look younger? My simple answer may surprise you: use a high quality sunscreen every single day, on your face, neck and hands. We estimate that 90 per cent of the signs of aging are caused by the sun. I saw startling photographs recently of two sides of a woman’s face. You would have thought they were before and after photos of a facelift patient, but the woman had worked in an office building for 15 years and the side of her face closest to the window looked at least 15 years older. Here are the basics about shopping for sunscreen. s -AKE SURE IT CONTAINS EITHER ZINC OXIDE OR TITANIUM DIOXIDE to block the sun’s UVA rays, the rays that go deepest into the skin and cause wrinkling, age spots and sagging. There are no chemical substitutes for these mineral sunblocks. s 2EMEMBER THAT THE 30& FACTOR IS IMPORTANT BUT IT IS ONLY a measurement of the protection against UVB rays, those which cause burning. s 4HE LAW ALLOWS COMPANIES TO MARKET THEIR SUNSCREENS AS “broad spectrum even if they protect against only one type of ray (UVB or UVA), so don’t assume you are getting protection against both. s 4HE EARLIER YOU START PROTECTING YOUR CHILDREN THE HEALTHIER their skin will stay. -Y STAFF AND ) ARE EXCITED ABOUT A NEW SUNSCREEN WE JUST STARTED CARRYING BY /BAGI .U $ERM 3UNSHIELD 30& )T IS paraben-free and non-allergenic and ideal for all skin types. )T HAS A MATTE lNISH AND THE MICRO lNE ZINC OXIDE APPLIES completely sheer. It’s safe even for children.

Mars, your ruler, remains in your sign all month. Energy peaks, there’s a renewed enthusiasm for sports. Remodel a Florida room or basement for gymnasium style exercise equipment or add a tennis or basketball court or a putting green to your backyard. Schedule sessions with a personal trainer or get some pointers from a pro to polish your game. It’s a wonderful time to enroll in a marathon, triathlon and other competitive sporting events. Lucky days: 3, 12, 29

The 1-19 finds Venus brightening your sector of friendships and goals. Consult a talented pal to exchange thoughts about refurbishing the front entrance of your residence. Adding a fountain and a circular driveway would be wonderful for the feng shui of your surroundings. The end of the month brings an opportunity to help others. Involvement in a charity fundraiser would be an enjoyable social event and bring deep gratification. Lucky days: 6, 15, 22

Through the 23rd Mercury, your ruling planet is retrograde. Temporarily you can feel the need for more rest. Be aware of how health habits and surroundings impact your well being. It’s a wonderful time to hunt for interesting antiques and collectibles for your home. Feng shui guidelines say to honor your heritage and the ancestors. Catch up on genealogy. Prepare a family tree to share with loved ones at the Easter/ Passover holiday. Lucky days: 8, 16, 25

The New Moon on the 3rd ushers in fresh, progressive energies relating to career. It’s an ideal time to redecorate your home office or work space. A new desk would be an asset. Be sensitive to the feng shui involved by positioning it so that when you are seated you face the room’s entrance. Add attractive memo and bulletin boards to display favorite photos and other keepsakes while avoiding clutter. Lucky days: 1, 9, 10

Several planetary transits highlight your 9th house, which has a bearing on imports. Be inspired by faraway shores in redecorating a family room. France is a Leo country, so think of a French provincial or Parisian theme. You are ruled by the Sun. Natural full spectrum light will play a part in maintaining your health. Add a skylight or large picture window to an area of your home, which is rather dark, especially if it‘s the kitchen. Lucky days: 2, 13, 20

Security issues can be a focus now; Mercury is retrograde in your 8th house of strategy. Keep keys and other items handy by installing hooks or shelves in convenient areas. Pretty shutters, which double as hurricane guards, would be a wise purchase. Design new landscape lighting, aim lamps to shine on the front door for a great feng shui treatment to brighten your life path. Lucky days: 4, 15, 23

Allergies Making Fido Fussy? Cathleen K. Bode Credits: Jonell Melville Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> Alas, spring is finally here! The sun is beaming, birds are chirping, and flowers are in full bloom, which also means its allergy season for not only you, but for your dog. While our four-legged friends are susceptible to many of the same allergens, their symptoms require an attentive eye to diagnose. There’s three ways allergies manifest in dogs: through the skin, respiratory system, and digestive system. Signs of airborne allergies include itching, scratching of the face and body against surfaces, and chewing of the paws. Dogs fiercely chew at their paws to relieve irritation. Allergens can be absorbed through the paws, making them itchy and uncomfortable. If irritated skin is making Fido fussy, try giving Fido an oatmeal bath. The oatmeal comforts the skin by reducing inflammation, and helps to retain the skin’s moisture.

Digestive problems due to food allergies are common amongst all breeds. Many pet foods contain fillers such as corn and wheat that can irritate your pet’s sensitive digestive tract. Symptoms of a food allergy include diarrhea, vomiting, and a greasy, matted coat. A strict, 12-week food trial is necessary to determine what foods are disrupting your pet’s system. During this time, alternative protein and carbohydrates such as fish, eggs, and potatoes are introduced into their diet to replace the traditional corn, wheat, and beef products, that are often the culprits for food allergies. If your pooch suffers from allergies, seek the guidance of a veterinarian to diagnose and treat seasonal and dietary allergies. The sooner he’s recovered, the sooner your dog can get back to chasing squirrels and digging up your neighbor’s prized petunias.<

Respiratory allergies can also affect dogs with hypersensitivity reaction to indoor allergens such as dust, mold, and smoke. Symptoms of a respiratory allergy are wheezing, coughing, difficulty breathing, and nasal and eye discharge. A veterinarian can perform blood tests such as the radioallergosorbent test (RAST) and immunosorbent test (ELISA) to diagnose allergies. These tests detect the presence of a certain igE antibody, which can identify what exactly your dog is allergic to.
