PUBLISHER’S NOTE

> Our annual ‘Mens’ issue allows me the opportunity to voice my side of things in regards to how television’s portrayal of men being dummies and deadbeat dads… We can’t tune in without seeing a commercial or sitcom hinting that men in general are nothing more than sex-obsessed womanizers, brimming with incompetence, and brutish slobs possessing few redeeming qualities. It seems that when there is boys vs. girls competition programmed, the girls always come out on top and the boys treated as fools. I think TV shows, commercials and movies need to cut us a little slack and show men in a more positive light. Women continue to be reminded that ours is a man-driven world and in many respects this bears some truth, however, there are also men who are real men. Those who might not always concur with but understand and respect other points of view and actions. This is the guy who takes good care of himself, practices good grooming and manner of presentation, is educated and confident. He knows how to balance his personal life, and love of sports, while being attentive and serious with his social and business counterparts. He’s also very likely to be an Orlando Style reader.

Our June publication contains lots of great content for both men and women. We strive to create every magazine issue so that it surpasses the quality and content of each preceding release. This labor of love requires total dedication each and every day despite being critically attacked at times by those who continue ‘limping along’ in the rear, refusing to accept that ‘Style’ is always at the ‘top of the charts’ when it comes to our recognized popularity as the most loved, read and respected magazine in the city. Please be on the lookout for the new, upcoming developments on our digital side. We will launch a reader’s experience that has never been seen before in our city and we cannot wait to get your reaction to our new addition. Help us strengthen our passion to continue producing a high quality, fulfilling and satisfying product in showing your appreciation for our efforts by continuing your support and encouraging your friends and acquaintances to join our list of growing ‘family’ members by subscribing to our magazine. Happy Father’s Day! < Sincerely,

Sven J. Bode, Publisher

MEN’S HEALTH

MANLY WAYS TO EXERCISE BY REBECCA PADGETT

> Since the beginning of time, humans were born with the notion of survival of the fittest ingrained into their minds. This keen sense dates back to when we did not live in carefully sculpted neighborhoods, but instead in the rugged and untamed wild. As humans we had to gain our strength from what was found in nature in order to survive. So, why not take this theory and apply it to your workout? Ditching the gym for the great outdoors brings about a transformation to your workout. The metal equipment with weight labels are gone, only to be replaced with using and judging your own strength based on what nature provides you. Nothing is manlier than being out in the wild and testing your strength among the elements. Florida provides an accommodating atmosphere for outdoor workouts with its pleasant weather, access to waterways and abundance of parks. You can consider taking your next exercise to the lake, a nearby state park, or even your own backyard. It may sound simple, but the first step you should take in your escapade towards out-

door manliness is to take a hike. Florida may not provide the challenging terrain of a mountainous town, but any trail can get your cardio going. Along the way you are likely to find objects that will aid you in your workout.

the time of your life swinging from branch to branch.

Large rocks and boulders can now become your weights. They come in all shapes, sizes for your hurling pleasure. By lifting boulders you are using the same muscles in your arms, legs and back that you would use in the gym. Except, in the gym they don’t allow you to throw the weights around.

If you are a man that enjoys activities on the water, kayaking is worth a try. Many men consider fishing and boating to be the only manly, water-related exercises, but kayaking takes tremendous amounts of strength. After about an hour or so of kayaking your arms may begin to feel like you’ve had your heaviest lift. Through kayaking you are using your triceps, biceps and deltoids in different ways than you would in a gym workout, however, still receiving noticeable results.

It is fairly easy to come in contact with a downed tree or at least logs, while out in the wild. Most people are well aware of contests that involve log lifting and throwing. You don’t have to save this for televised spectacles. Lifting logs or doing squats with logs gives you the same back, upper body and leg results as any gym equipment would.

Men often seek to be the strongest, fastest, and manliest they can be. A man’s degree of manhood is often judged based on his skills and strengths in relation to the great outdoors. So, test your strengths outside of an air-conditioned building complete with steely weights, and become a lean, mean, nature man. <

Every young boy wants nothing more than the excitement of climbing a tree, but who said this hobby couldn’t carry on into adulthood? Tree climbing can test your upper body strength, while allowing you to have

ORLANDO NOW

> “The City of Orlando values its diversity.” Mayor Buddy Dyer tips his hat to The City Beautiful, which took a leadership role by being the first government in Central Florida to establish a Domestic Partnership Registry. While it continues to be a long road to national recognition of same-sex marriage, states across the country slowly gain ground by allowing domestic partnerships to register with their local government in order to receive some of the benefits usually reserved for married couples. Until same sex marriage becomes legally recognized in Florida, Orlando is proud to offer such a registry to those who meet these requirements: 1. Each person must be 18 years of age.

Domestic Partner Registry in Orlando for Gay Couples By Mark NeJame Contributor Vanessa Braeley, Associate Attorney with NeJame Law Read more at: StyleToMe.com

2. Neither person can be currently married under Florida law or a partner in a domestic partnership or civil union with anyone other than the coapplicant. 3. The parties must not be related. 4. Each person must immediately notify the City Clerk, in writing, if the terms of the Registered Domestic Partnership are no longer applicable or one of the domestic partners wishes to terminate the domestic partnership. 5. Each person must declare their desire and intent to designate their domestic partner as their healthcare surrogate and as their agent to direct the disposition of their body for funeral and burial. Both parties must register together, in person, at City Hall, 400 South Orange Avenue, Orlando, Florida 32801; the registration fee is $30. There is no specific requirement that the couple be in a same-sex partnership.

Mark NeJame

STYLETOME.COM

What’s important to remember is the purpose of the registry – married couples are afforded rights with respect to one-another that unmarried couples cannot legally enjoy. Often times unmarried partners only realize how important these rights are when it’s too late. For example, let’s imagine Joe and John have lived together for ten years. They are not married, but own a home together and otherwise operate as each

other’s spouses. One day, Joe gets in a car accident and is taken to the hospital – he is unresponsive. Joe has no other family and John is the only one there to oversee his treatment and any other decisions that need to be made. If Joe does not have a living will directing John as his healthcare surrogate (most people do not), then John has no say at all as to what happens to Joe. In fact, the doctors cannot even talk about Joe to John, nor can he visit him while he is in the hospital’s care. This scenario emphasizes the importance of preparing for these and any other of life’s events ahead of time. Registering as a domestic partnership will ensure that, at a minimum, these rights will be afforded to the couple in the City of Orlando: 1. Health Care Facility Visitation 2. Health Care Decisions (mental and physical) 3. Funeral/burial decisions 4. Correctional facility visitation rights 5. Notification of family members (domestic partner to be included as a family member) 6. Guardian designation in the event of incapacitation 7. Participation in the education of a dependent of the registered domestic partnership to the extent that a biological parent would enjoy Today’s modern unmarried couple should be aware of their legal rights with respect to one another. Intestacy statutes (which determine property distribution of a person who dies without a will) only recognize spouses and family members as heirs, and strict privacy laws make it impossible for a person other than a spouse or a family member to gain information or make decisions about a loved one in a healthcare facility. Because of these laws, it is strongly advised that each person have a current will and a living will. However, registering as a domestic partnership is a quick and easy way to ensure access to some of the rights afforded to married couples. <

> Social butterflies with a penchant for finding artistic subtleties in life’s visual treasures, received their share of the best in photographic art at the bastion of creativity and expression called, Snap! 2013 Orlando- Celebrate the Photograph-MOTION TO LIGHT May 2nd-5th. From novice to seasoned collector, this event was the art enthusiast’s time to bask in a brand of sensorystimulating and thought-provoking revelry that only the largest photography event in Central Florida could provide. To the great delight of devout Snap! goers, this year brought back signature mainstays (including large scale exhibits, projections and video mapping walls) while still managing to showcase cutting edge artistic mediums such as, light painting (a technique where light is reflected off shards of glass and mirrors creating a kaleidoscope of colors projected—in large scale – onto a wall or floor). This technique made artist, Stephen Knapp’s exhibit, Painting with Light a standout. Having no problem with standing out and standing up for what she believes in celebration of photography and activism was pint-sized activist, 9-year-old Vivienne Harr. A year ago Harr, saw a photograph that moved her so deeply she took action by setting up a lemonade stand that raised $150,000 for an organization working to liberate modern day child slaves. Snap! 2013 helped the child phenom usher in the first anniversary of her “Make a Stand” program by setting up lemonade stands throughout Orlando as a showcase of art and activism. I’ve said it before about this event and will say it again, whether you love deep introspective works meant for social commentary or you just love pretty pictures, Snap! 2013 delivered. From using photos to celebrate activism to thousands using their legs to celebrate, remember and fight back against cancer. On May 4th,The American Cancer Society of Central Florida held a Relay for Life walk at Apopka Elementary to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. One team in particular, raised thousands in the name of Orlando Style Magazine contributing writer and WKMG/Local6 traffic anchor, Jessica Sanchez who was recently diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

The first Saturday of May is always met with feverish anticipation by horse racing fans all the worldwide as Derby Day gets the month off to a speedy start—this time--with the 139th Running of the Kentucky Derby. Nothing says the need for speed like racehorses, lavish horse-powered cars and galloping, toe-tapping jazz rhythms, all part of the Jockeys, Juleps & Jazz event on May 4th.

CITY NEWS

The new Audi North Orlando showroom in Sanford hosted the soiree benefiting the Save a Life Pet Rescue where once again, guests donned dapper bonnets and bowties, dined on Derby Pie and all that jazz (I mean that literally!), as they enjoyed live jazz from the 17-piece swing band, Sanford Ensemble. Just as party revelers had done last year truly inspired by Churchill Downs, the event had a retired thoroughbred racehorse on hand for partygoers to snap photos with after walking the red carpet. Stealing a bit of the spotlight from the horses was the Floral Decorating competition, along with Orlando Style Magazine’s Best Hat contest, back for a second year in a row and bigger than ever where the winner was awarded a 3-day and 2-night stay on the beach at the Hilton Daytona Beach Resort and the use of a new Audi for the trip! Also on May 5th, set amidst endless miles of unspoiled countryside, a driver’s paradise emerged in Howey-in-the-Hills. It was a weekend behind the wheel and all about driving hearts to race with excitement. The

Festivals of Speed event was the ultimate road trip for luxury car enthusiasts! Maserati, Porsche, Aston Martin, Lamborghini, just to name a few of the rolling sculptures on display at the Mission Inn Resort & Club. For family members along for the ride, there was plenty to do, including spa treatments, tennis, golf, skeet shooting, boating and fine dining. All the driving was done for a good cause to benefit the Alliance Healthcare Foundation. One event that continues to top itself each passing year, becoming bigger than the last from the runway to the venue, The Runway to Hope Spring Fashion Soiree on May 11th kept right on trend with a super-sized transformation. For starters, the event this year brought together a total of 1,600 of the area’s most fashionable and sophisticated social elite, which is up from 1,000 the year prior. A larger crowd also meant a larger venue this year, held for the first time at the Rosen Shingle Creek. Guests reveled in fivestar dinners, fashion, fun and an evening full of inspiration. Even the celebrity hosts were

of Olympic caliber. Olympic Gold Medalist, Gabby Douglas joined by blockbuster box office darling, Twilight Saga actress, Ashley Greene helped the crowd celebrate brave children stricken with cancer. The amount of courageous children who took to the runway modeling high fashion looks while escorted by national and local celebrities, including our very own, Sven Bode. The star-studded event also included an auction showcasing unique items like one-on-one time with Shaquille O’Neal on the basketball court and lunch with the basketball legend at his home! Proceeds benefited the pediatric oncology programs at Florida Hospital for Children and Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children because as event cofounder, Mark NeJame says, “Curing childhood cancer never goes out of style.” < Know of a Not-To-Be Missed Event? Fall into the World of Greg Alexander By Cathleen K. Bode Read More at StyleToMe.com

> Photographer and film director, Greg Alexander possesses a deep obsession, which drives this workaholic to produce a continuous and complete shooting every three days, on average. Prior to completion of each photographic session, Greg is always thinking about the next one. “If I stop taking pictures, I’m dying. Taking pictures is a pleasure more powerful than anything, it’s like experiencing the ultimate euphoria.” His career began when he was a small boy. “When I was seven,” recalls Greg, “I drew Haute-Couture collections. Fashion is my first love”... and this self-taught man turned his girlfriends into models as he was shooting them. Since meeting art director Sébastien Vienne in 2002, they’ve worked together as a team, creating a colorful world of contrast where ‘kitsch to tragic’ forms a workable mix. This melting pot produces a special aestheticism, which gives all shots a unique and recognizable style, allowing them to collaborate with the most prestigious Houses of Couture such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Frank Sorbier, Zuhair Murad and luxury prêt-à-porter such as Dior, Gucci, Zilli and Cartier, in creating fashion editorials for international magazines such as Madame Figaro.

“I do take pictures of me, myself and I...an idea of myself... but this is not narcissism, but capturing beauty, escaping from time running out, tasting a piece of eternity...”

“The obsession of the photographer is more than a pointless quest of beauty or fashion; he searches for the hidden meaning behind the image.”

Also, on a two-year journey, they collaborated the image of French pop star Shy’m and other famous French singers and their comfortable eclecticism in selecting fresh, new fashion designers affords the opportunity to be published in magazines or for them to be branded by their personalities which emit through their design apparel. “We do not seek the brand at all cost, but we search the idea of mise-en-scène of the shooting which leads us to choose some clothes instead of others.” This obsession of the photographer is more than a pointless quest of beauty or fashion; he looks for the hidden meaning behind the image. “We don’t wish to create a style ‘Sébastien’ so when it emerges it is all about the research invested in the meaning we wish to convey through pictures.” This approach reveals the author much more than the model.

NEIL

ARMSTRONG The Man, The Dream & The Legacy By Riesa Pascal Read more at: StyleToMe.com

“It suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the Earth. I put up my thumb and shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet Earth. I didn’t feel like a giant. I felt very, very small.” - Neil Armstrong STYLETOME.COM

PEOPLE

::

> Easily the most quoted astronaut in history, Neil Armstrong is a name we all know. From the elderly grandmother who watched it live in 1969 to the high school student who read about it in their history class today-Armstrong’s past, present and future legacy will forever be the fact that he was the first man to walk on the moon. Born on August 5, 1930, Armstrong became fascinated with the concept of flight at a very early age after being inspired by none other than the famous Wright brothers themselves.

performed the first successful docking of two vehicles in space. Although entering the earth’s orbit was an undeniably huge accomplishment, NASA and Armstrong were only just getting started. The next challenge ahead was something bigger and greater than anything imagined before. In 1969, Armstrong and fellow astronauts Michael Collins and Edwin E. “Buzz” Aldrin were called to be a part of Apollo 11, NASA’s fifth manned mission of the Apollo program and their first manned mission to the moon.

ever, Armstrong remained involved in flight and space exploration through a variety of means including teaching aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati and more recently, expressing his concerns over the changes made to the U.S. space program.

“As a boy, because I was born and raised in Ohio, about 60 miles north of Dayton, the legends of the Wrights have been in my memories as long as I can remember.” - N.A.

“I think we’re going to the moon because it’s in the nature of the human being to face challenges. It’s by the nature of his deep inner soul. We’re required to do these things just as salmon swim upstream.” - N.A.

On August 25, 2012, at 82 years old, Neil Armstrong died of complications related to a heart bypass surgery. After the news of his passing spread across the world, condolences came pouring in all the way from President Obama to Buzz Aldrin and many others. Soon after, the Armstrong family released the following statement: “For those who may ask what they can do to honor Neil, we have a simple request. Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink.”

Armstrong earned a student’s pilot license at the age of 16 and soon after, enrolled in Purdue University to study aeronautical engineering. In 1949, Armstrong was called to serve in the Korean War as a U.S Navy pilot and was forced to put his studies on hold. He flew 78 combat missions during this time before leaving the service to resume his collegiate studies in 1952. Several years later, Armstrong joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) and helped them with everything from highspeed aircraft testing to engineering. In 1958, NACA was revamped and renamed into to the program we know today as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). “Mystery creates wonder and wonder is the basis of man’s desire to understand.” - N.A. Despite Armstrong’s love for flight, his work never stopped him from settling down and seeking after a different type of love. In 1956, Armstrong married Janet Shearon and in 1957, they welcomed the arrival of their first son, Eric. In 1959, they added a daughter, Karen, to their family who sadly passed away of a brain tumor in 1962. One year later, the couple’s second son Mark was born. That same year Armstrong officially joined NASA’s astronaut program. “I thought the attractions of being an astronaut were actually, not so much the Moon, but flying in a completely new medium.” - N.A. Armstrong relocated his family to Houston, Texas and in 1966, took part in his first NASA mission, Gemini VIII. Command pilot Armstrong and fellow pilot David Scott were launched into the earth’s orbit and

Armstrong was named the commander of the mission and successfully piloted the landing portion of their craft to the moon’s surface on July 16, 1969. “That’s one small step for [a] man. One giant leap for mankind.” - N.A. For over two hours, Armstrong and Aldrin studied the moon by collecting samples, conducting experiments and taking many photographs that have become just about as famous as the moon landing itself. Photographs of their own footsteps and photos of the American flag they proudly placed on the surface are two that immediately come to the mind of most. “Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the Moon. July 1969 AD. We came in peace for all mankind.” - N.A. The trio returned to earth on July 24th and not too long after, the astronauts were treated to a ‘welcome home’ celebration like no other. The men were paraded through the streets of New York City as thick crowds looked on and cheered for America’s new heroes. For his part in the Apollo 11 mission and his work with NASA, Armstrong received a variety of well-deserved awards, honors and accolades. “The important achievement of Apollo was demonstrating that humanity is not forever chained to this planet and our visions go rather further than that and our opportunities are unlimited.” - N.A.

Armstrong’s first wife, Janet, divorced him in 1994, after 38 years of marriage. Neil was quite content with Janet, but she felt distanced from him. He married his second wife, Carol Held Knight, the same year.

Neil Armstrong. A name forever a part of our American history, our world history and the history of that which looms in the night sky. Immortalized in our history books as the first man to walk on the moon, it goes without saying that Armstrong will never be forgotten. Armstrong’s moon walk became a symbol of technology, progression and the incredible capabilities of the human mind. What was once only science fiction, became an incredible reality as he, in turn, became an inspiration, a leader and a hero to many. A true role model who believed in chasing after his dreams no matter how ‘far away’ they were or impossible they seemed. “There can be no great accomplishment without risk.” - N.A. Though he is gone, Armstrong’s legacy will live on through the story we get to tell the wide-eyed child staring up in curious amazement at the full moon in the night sky. That incredible tale of one man’s small step that changed the world forever and became the greatest leap for mankind. The Bachelor Life Hollywood’s Hottest Bachelors of 2013 By Alyssa Thomann

> May has come and gone. All the flowers, candy and sappy Mother’s Day cards have been delivered to their respective mothers. Now it’s June, time to purchase those sports tickets, buy a six-pack of cold beer and send them dad’s way to show him your love and appreciation for him on Father’s Day. June is the month to appreciate the men in our lives. Hollywood is swarming with men who will be soaking up the love from their families this Father’s Day, but we’re not interested in them right now. Lets check out some of 2013’s hottest Hollywood bachelors. Though they may not be the main subject on Father’s Day this June 16th, perhaps they

STYLETOME.COM

will be soon, because these studs definitely will not be on the market for long. We all know Jake Gyllenhaal as the cowboy who won the hearts of men and women everywhere when he starred in 2005 hit film, Brokeback Mountain, alongside co-star, Heath Ledger. The love story portrays the duo sent to work together on Brokeback Mountain. First they build a strong platonic friendship, but as the story goes on it leads to so much more. The world was googlyeyed over this hunk of a man from that moment on. It is no surprise that he has dated some of the most famous and beautiful women of Hollywood, but it is surprising to hear that this catch is still living the bach-

elor life. Back in 2002, Jake and Bring It On star, Kirsten Dunst were a red carpet staple. After two years of dating the couple realized that as two busy actors, the relationship was getting to be too difficult and they split up. Another big relationship for Jake was with co-star of his movie Rendition, Reese Witherspoon. The two also dated for a solid two years before calling it quits. This then leads us to the most popular Jake Gyllenhaal relationship with country pop star, Taylor Swift. Though their relationship seemed full of romance to the public eye, it was not enough to keep the sparks flying. Recently, however, Jake has found a new sweetie to help take his mind off of Taylor. Sports Illustrator model, Emily DiDonato

Ryan Gosling

and Jake met at a spinning class in Manhattan and seem to have really hit it off. I wonder if this lovely lady will be the one to seal the deal with this Brokeback Mountain bachelor. When women dream up the perfect relationship, more than half of them compare it to something exactly like the plot line of The Notebook. Not only do we all desire the beautiful love story, we desire the beautiful man who was a part of that beautiful love story- Ryan Gosling. Just his name is enough to put butterflies in most women’s stomach. His piercing blue eyes and chiseled facial features are not the only traits that make this bachelor such a stud. There is more. His one true love in life is his dog, George. Yes, I said he has a love for his dog unlike any other. After describing George as “the great love of my life,” he admits to having special paperwork for George that allows him to bring the pooch with him wherever he goes. A man who loves dogs is a man after any woman’s heart. I can’t even just stop there, there is more to this perfect human. Not only was he in a trifecta of box office hits in 2011 including, Drive, The Ides of March and Crazy Stupid Love, he is also in a band in which he sings and plays piano and guitar. What can this 32-yearold Canadian NOT do? He is the epitome of perfection and with all he has to offer, I can guarantee he will not be living the bachelor life for too much longer.

“Though they may not be the main subject on Father’s Day this June 16th, perhaps they will be soon, because these studs definitely will not be on the market for long” Let’s switch up the pace a bit and move on from Hollywood’s hottest movie stars to one of Hollywood’s hottest rock stars, Adam Levine. As lead vocalist of Maroon 5 and judge on NBC’s The Voice, Adam is definitely some sweet eye candy. It’s rumored that he is quite popular with the ladies but never one to fully settle down. This bachelor is clearly living up the single life. No woman, or man for that matter, can deny his edgy look. Do we all remember his nude photo shoot for Cosmo UK? There is no way you can forget. Posing nude in the photos with nothing but his girlfriend at the time holding her hands to cover his private areas.Talk about sexy! The photos were for a publicity shot meant to raise awareness for prostate and testicular cancer for Everyman. The lucky woman behind the photos was his most recent girlfriend of two years, Russian model, Anne Vyalitsyna. Their relationship went sour just after the second year when she released a statement about their breakup but ensured that they both still loved and respected each other, it just did not work out. Whoever is next in the cards for Adam is one lucky woman. For all us other women out here, we are just hoping for some more risqué photos of Levine’s smoking bod! <

SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW

WHEN AGE MEANS NOTHING & EVERYTHING - BY MARK L. HORWITZ > A 20 year old man searches adult web sites to meet a potential sex partner. He finds many postings and contacts a few of them. The ones he contacts involve women who have posted nude pictures. The adult web site limits postings to those who claim to be at least 18 years old. After several on line contacts with one woman, a meeting is arranged, a relationship begins and sexual contact results. The woman claims to be 18 years old but in fact, is 17. Sexually explicit pictures were taken and put on their computers. Law enforcement obtains the man’s computer and the pictures of the 17 year old who claimed to be 18. The 17 year old is a physically mature woman who could be in her early 20’s. Because the actual age of the female is 17, the man is arrested by federal authorities and is

charged with a crime that is punishable by not less than 15 years and not more than 30 years. The man’s belief that the woman was 18 makes no difference. Even if the woman had false identification, her stated age means nothing and upon conviction, the defendant will be sentenced to at least 15 years in prison. Many would call such a result unfair but it is the law and an example of WHEN AGE MEANS NOTHING AND EVERYTHING. More on this next month. <

Josie & Mark NeJame with the Orlando Magic at Runway To Hope

“Curing Childhood Cancer Never Goes Out Of Style” – Mark NeJame By Cathleen K. Bode & Riesa Pascal Photos by Brion Price Read more at: StyleToMe.com

“Runway To Hope Spring Fashion Soiree is the Best Charity Event of 2013 and the Fastest Growing Charity Event in Central Florida!” – Orlando Style Magazine STYLETOME.COM

> In this day and age you’d be hard pressed to meet someone who hasn’t personally been affected by cancer. It’s a disease that does not discriminate against race, against gender, or against age. Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among U.S. children between infancy and age 15. Each year in the U.S. there are approximately 12,400 children between the ages of birth and 19 who are diagnosed with the disease. Despite its rapid and ravage spread throughout our world today, there are some who’ve decided they aren’t going to take it sitting down. In fact, they’re not just standing up to cancer--they’re taking it to the runway. Runway To Hope is a non-profit organization that aims to benefit both Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Florida Hospital by providing goods, services and funds that are needed as a direct result of childhood cancer. Runway to Hope was started three years ago by its passionate founders, Mark NeJame and his wife Josie. On May 11th, 2013, the organization put on its signature fundraiser of the year, the Runway To Hope Spring Fashion Soiree. The event consisted of a cocktail party, a fabulous 4-course dinner and an incredible live and silent auction. The highlight of the evening was a special fashion show

that featured 90 beautiful and brave children, ages 2 to 18, who are all currently battling or have overcome their cancer. “We can explain this event to so many people and tell them it’s all about the beauty and the spirit of these children. We can say it over and over again, but it’s not until you witness it there in the moment and see it for yourself that you truly experience it. There’s something about it that makes you look at these children and see that there’s hope, there’s beauty and there’s strength in them. You begin to feel like you know them and you’re so proud of them being there and you just want to cheer them on and make it as special as you can for each and every single one.” – Josie NeJame This year, the Spring Fashion Soiree was co-hosted by two very special celebrities. “Gabby Douglas is an inspirational story. She has overcome so many obstacles and a lot of people can relate to her because of that so we knew she was a good choice for the kids. She’s relatable to so many children and these kids are going through so much hardship in their lives. Having inspiration and hope is such a big part of getting through cancer and Gabby was

STYLE

perfect for providing that.” – Josie NeJame The USA Olympic Gold Gymnast told us how honored she was to be in a position where she could help Runway To Hope by taking part in this amazing event. “I think it’s all about giving back. A lot of people have supported me and blessed me so now it’s time to flip the switch. It’s important to help kids and to make others smile and to just be a blessing.” – Gabby Douglas The 17 year old was joined onstage by another celebrity whom the children and even Gabby herself couldn’t help being star-struck by. The Twilight Saga actress, Ashley Greene was Gabby’s co-host for the evening and Ashley passionately spoke to us about the reasons why she supports Runway To Hope. “Cancer is an epidemic and it’s so important that we keep fighting the fight--especially with children because everyone deserves to grow up and have an adulthood. I know that people are going to leave here affected because you see these children and you begin to realize how they’re such a powerful force. They’re beautiful, they’re hopes and dreams and they’re fighting for their life at this young age. I know people are going to see them walk by and be as touched as I am. I have full faith that they’re going to go forth into the community and reach out to others after this event.” – Ashley Greene It didn’t take long for me to see for myself just how true Ashley’s words were. Watching these strong, courageous children strut across the runway was something I’ll never forget. Their inner beauty shined brightly and radiantly as they made their way down the stage, beaming ear to ear as deafening applause and cheers rang out for each and every single one.The children were escorted by dozens of national and local celebrities ranging from news anchors and members of the Orlando Magic to Miss. Florida Jr. Teen and a semi-finalist from The Voice. A special pre-show montage featured shout outs from Larry King, Nancy Grace, Akon, The Jonas Brothers, Shaquille O’Neal, Barbara Walters, AJ McLean, Chris Kirkpatrick and so many other well known faces. The diversity in supporters of Runway To Hope serves as a perfect example that when it comes to cancer, no one is immune so all of us must rally together for a cure and especially for the children.

Sadly, there has been little to no increase in survival rates of childhood cancer in the last 20 years. When cancer forms in children, it’s usually in the parts of their bodies that are still growing and changing, such as their blood system, brain, and kidneys. The disease has very obvious physical effects on these children as chemo and treatments begin to take effect on their bodies, but what a lot of people don’t see are the emotional damages that cancer causes. When you’re a child that’s battling cancer and you look different than your friends, you can easily start to feel different too, but one of the beautiful things about the Spring Fashion Soiree is that it shows those boys and girls just how special and beautiful they truly are. When they hear the applause and see the admiration from everyone in the room, you can see it in their eyes that they’ve begun to feel beautiful again. Even the shy ones and the ones who’ve lost all their hair are suddenly walking down the runway with their head held up high and proud. It’s amazing what a pretty dress or a little makeup or just some cool sneakers can do for these children. “It brings so much self-confidence to them and I love that the event showcases their natural beauty. They’re reminded that they’re beautiful on both the inside and the outside and that a lot of people love and support them and that they’re a lot of other children like them.” – Mark NeJame When you attend this event and see the impact it has on everyone there, it’s no surprise to learn just how much it has grown since it’s inception 3 years ago.The first fashion soiree was held at the mall at Millenia and featured 37 children and 800 attendees. The event raised $385,000 and outgrew the location that same year. In 2012, the event moved over to its second location, the Waldorf Astoria Orlando. That year, the show featured 57 children, 1,250 attendees, raised $515,000 and again, outgrew its location. This year, the NeJame’s hope they have finally found a permanent home at Rosen Shingle Creek. The massive event hall comfortably held the whopping 1,650 attendees and 90 beautiful children. The estimation for the total raised at the event currently sits around an impressive $720,000. It’s easy to see that the numbers and figures for the event have steadily increased every year and the NeJame’s expect next year to be no different. In 2014, and every year hence, they’d like to see at least $1,000,000 raised through the event, however, the ultimate goal on the horizon is far from being about money.

::

“Ultimately, we just hope that one day we can’t have this event anymore because there is a cure for cancer and we have no need for something like this.” – Josie NeJame I think that is a beautiful goal that each and every one of us can get behind. To say that Runway To Hope is a community event is an understatement. No matter where you’re from or what your beliefs are, we all know that children are our future and we can’t continue to let this disease take our nation’s future away from us. Runway to Hope does fundraising events all throughout the year and needs our help to ensure that they happen and more importantly, are a success. When you and I make a donation to Runway To Hope, it goes straight to much needed research, technology and family assistance for all the courageous victims of this awful disease. As Ashley Greene said, every child deserves an adulthood and together, we can help them get there. Please take a moment to consider supporting this award winning organization. Truly, every dollar you and I donate is needed, appreciated and goes towards helping a suffering child and finding a cure. I hope you will join Style Magazines in supporting Runway To Hope and showing these children that they’re beautiful, and indeed “curing childhood cancer never goes out of style.” For more information on Runway To Hope, log onto www.RunwayToHope.org. < Gabby Douglas

Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center There will be no reason to leave as everything you desire is right here. By Travis Joiner

> The Gaylord Palms Resort near Walt Disney World has been transformed again as one of the perfect resort hotels to take the family to Florida. It will also be a pretty good excuse to take a mini-vacation in our own backyard. While it has been around now for a few years it has that brand new look and feel thanks to a $50 million dollar facelift. With the recent renovations and additions they have successfully made exceptional the standard. As you pull up to the Gaylord you will know in an instant that guest satisfaction is their number one goal as you are greeted with a great staff that is well trained and capable. You will never have to worry about going hungry as they feature five full service restaurants as well as other lounge and bar locations that will leave you sated and smiling. If you need to be pampered just stroll down to the Forbes rated four star Relâche Spa. Plan on relaxing while you choose from an extensive list of services that they have to offer at the spa,

some with a Florida theme. The staff is both courteous and very capable of exceeding your pampering needs. One thing that has remained a constant is the awe-inspiring 4.5-acre atrium that is like walking into a three themed city under glass.Whether you are in the Everglades, St. Augustine or the Key West themed areas the one constant is the abundance of foliage and horticulture elements that will fill and please the senses. The running waterfall and beautifully maintained nooks and crannies are a great reason to get lost inside this 63-acre resort. The new changes and additions to the resort are the excuse you need to revisit the Gaylord Palms. The Cypress Springs Family Fun Water Park is a fully themed poolside experience. Guests can hang out with Shrek and friends or relax in a poolside family cabana. Kids, they have a multi-level tree house with twisting waterslides that you might not want to leave. There is a real interac-

tive feeling to the newly renovated pool that ensures there will always be something going on. The staff keeps the poolside fun with games and events throughout the day. The evening brings the “Splash ‘N’ Screen” family friendly movie on a huge screen that allows you to wade in the pool or relax with the whole family poolside. The South Beach pool is an adult’s only themed area that beckons you to relax and unwind. It features fully stocked cabanas with fans and flat screen TV’s for your chilling pleasure. The Sandbar is located right next to it if you want to sit at the bar or grab a bite poolside. Dining out is something that comes hand in hand with vacationing and you have plenty of options to choose from. If you are in need of the island life go grab a bite at Sunset Sam’s in the Key West area of the atrium. Come aboard the SS Gaylord sailboat and you will be transported to the Key’s with

New World Floridian cuisine and plenty of boat drinks. If an upscale buffet style meal is what the family needs after a long day at the parks there is Villa De Flora. Located in the St. Augustine Atrium, the backdrop is the famous Castillo de San Marcos fort of St. Augustine. The restaurant has an amazing European feel that brings you the seasonal flavors of the Mediterranean. On Sunday you have to go there for their award winning brunch, it is how every family or guest must end a stay at the Gaylord Palms. If a glass of wine and a serious steak is your forte head to the Old Hickory Steakhouse. Located in the Everglades atrium, the steakhouse also has a great cheese list and a well-trained staff. After dinner drinks have to be at the bar located at the Old Hickory. You will get expertly created cocktails and even better conversation courtesy of Ben and Scott and the rest of the staff. SORA is the sushi house located in the hotel lobby that has a wonderful and sublime tasting menu. The bar at SORA is your safety net if you are looking for a modern twist and late night martinis. The Wreckers Bar is the new kid on the block and you will be happy you found it by the South Beach Pool.Whatever game or sport you are looking for they

Wherever you sit you can see the larger than life screen while munching on your favorite bar inspired snack. I recommend the chicken lollipops and one of their many beers on tap. The Gaylord Palms boasts even more options under the atrium from boutique shopping in Market Square or a chance to join one of the 1,600 employees in feeding the alligators or koi. If outside is where you prefer to be, head to the 10,000-foot Coquina Lawn. It is a perfect place for the kids to run around while you can engage in conversation around one of the three fire pit areas located around the neatly manicured lawn. If it is time for some downtime, head to your welcoming and newly renovated room. All 1,406 have been outfitted with flat screen TV’s,Wi-Fi as well as stylish upgrades to the linens and new ergonomic chairs. I personally love the fact that if you open the door to the atrium you can hear that wonderful waterfall as you drift off to sleep after a funfilled day at the resort.

If you are going to be visiting the Gaylord Palms for business or a family getaway, they will ensure you are taken care of. Located in the perfect area if you are heading to Walt Disney World or to get a round in at Celebration Golf Course after a successful business meeting, the Gaylord Palm is the place you deserve to stay. As for someone who is fortunate to be close enough for the vacation in your own backyard, I can say it is worth it. There will be no reason to leave as everything you desire is right here and if it is not the wonderful and knowledgeable staff will find it. It is like having a glass atrium full of friends you never get to see enough. to estate and gift tax he has developed his practice to include wills, trusts and a substantial probate practice. As a result of having significant association with other former IRS attorneys, his practice has expanded into out-of-state and some out-of-the-country ancillary probate administrations for clearing of title in Florida as well as consultations with regard to taxation in the various jurisdictions of referral. Throughout his practice Terry has volunteered on a number of charitable Boards. > Frequently I am asked what is Cosmetic Dentistry? Cosmetic Dentistry is generally used to refer to any dental treatment that improves the appearance of a person’s teeth, gums, and/or bite. The American Dental Association does not recognize cosmetic dentistry as a formal specialty area of dentistry. Many dentists further their education by taking advanced courses with like minded dentists to be able to deliver a high level of dental skill and artistry. It is important when a patient seeks cosmetic dentistry that they seek references and be provided with comprehensive before and after photographs of patients treated by said dentist.

Patient after whitening, orthodontics, and periodontics treatment.

The wonderful thing about dentistry and its specialties is that almost all treatments are to improve not only the oral health, but will also benefit the patient cosmetically by improvement in the face and smile and contribute to an enhanced self confidence. Each specialty has its particular expertise. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery focuses on surgical correction and enhancement of the face and facial skeleton. Orthodontics goal is to straighten teeth and correct bites and also assists the general dentist is setting up teeth for cosmetic restorations. Periodontics assist cosmetics in various treatment modalities. One way is with

exposed tooth roots. Recession can cause sensitivity, bone, loss, and cavities as well. A gum graft can protect the teeth from these problems . Also; gum plastic surgery can get rid of a gummy smile and set the table for a beautiful smile with periodontal health. So as you can see the dentist develops a team of experts to assist in providing the patient with the optimum cosmetic result. HERE IS ONE EXAMPLE OF A COSMETIC DENTISTRY OPTION

The placement of Porcelain veneers: 1: In office whitening to brighten & whiten the smile. 2: Conservative preparation of the teeth. 3: Placement of bonded porcelain veneers. This result was achieved in 3 appointments. Sometimes the patient will have to see the Orthodontist, periodontist, and/ or the Malliofacial surgeon to set the case up for the dentist to do the cosmetics.

after

In closing as a general dentist it is imperative that I work with a team of experts and these professionals are part of my team.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW

Mercedes R. Wechsler

FAMILY LAW

> Mercedes attended law school at the University of Florida starting in January 1995 as a single mother and finished law school in two and a half years. To her surprise, she wasn’t the only “non-traditional” law student and she rapidly became a huge Gator fan! After graduating in May 1997 from UF, Mercedes and her son returned to Central Florida. Her son, Alex, graduated Winter Park High School and is now a graduate of the fire academy. Mercedes is very involved in the arts community, and balances the stress of practicing law with running and yoga. Law is a second career for Mercedes. After growing up in Central Florida, attending high school and college here in Orlando, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree from the University of Central Florida in 1985. Mercedes worked mostly in the military defense industry for the next 10 years. But going to law school was always in the back or her mind. When a dear friend died of cancer at 36 years old, Mercedes decided she could no longer ignore what she really wanted to do.

Mercedes worked in the areas of products liability, commercial litigation, insurance defense, government defense and charter schools. In 2001, a yoga teacher approached Mercedes about helping her with a divorce. Although she did not practice in that area, with the assistance of another attorney, she took the case. Through that experience, Mercedes realized that family law was what she wanted to practice. She went out on her own full-time in 2002 and never looked back!

Mercedes ensures her clients are apprised about “the good, the bad and the ugly” so they can make an informed decision about their future. She and her staff recognize that her clients are going through some of the most difficult emotional situations they will ever have to face. Barfly By Travis Joiner Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> Trends in the bar business these days seem to change more quickly than a showgirls wardrobe in Vegas. Whether it is the style of bar or the liquor behind it we have seen more than a few shifts in the last ten years or so. It seems especially obvious in the trendy thing you have to be seen drinking. There are a few of these trends that truly deserve to stick around and find a place

at your bar. One trend that is getting ready to drop in Florida is one that needs to pass over that trendy threshold and become a staple is Mezcal. Mezcal is a distilled spirit made from a familiar plant that goes by the name of agave. An easy comparison is to consider tequila a mezcal that is made specifically from blue

agave. Mezcal has a tendency to be a wonderfully smoky spirit that usually brings a higher percentage of alcohol to the bottle. The majority of mezcal comes from Oaxaca in southern Mexico. I can hear most of you saying “Oh that’s the bottle with the worm in it.” While mezcal is the bottle that is affiliated with containing a worm, most do not. If you were to ask most of the producers of

this fine spirit they would say that the worm is more of a marketing ploy than anything. It is finally being exported to the states more so than ever before. To find most mezcals though, you still have to go to Mexico. The Orlando Chapter of the United States Bartenders Guild was fortunate enough to have a tasting recently with Jonathan Barbieri from Peirde Almas who shed some light on the history of Mezcal. One of the reasons you do not see much of it in the states is the history of bottling it. Jonathan explained to us that you will have many small towns in the area of Oaxaca that have been bottling Mezcal for generations. Most of these towns use secret family recipes that have been passed down from the generation before. Another reason you do not see it is the production is very small from town to town. The history has been to make enough for the local residents and that is all. The cool thing to me is that every precious local recipe for making this spirit changes from

town to town. There has to be hundreds of little nuances that go into making the local Mezcal that result in subtle flavor changes depending on the town. That truly makes Mezcal a passion of the people and a spirit that shows the pride of every town. At the tasting of Pierde Almas Mezcal we had a chance to try several bottling’s that they produce. You could really taste the subtle changes from one to the next. They range from a light smoky, smooth sipper to a hearty smoky, stick with you spirit that leaves a mark in a good way. You can practically taste the love that goes into using the local agave to perfect a truly labor intensive and rewarding spirit. I really enjoyed tasting them neat or with one cube so the mezcal can truly be the star. While it can be mixed with like-minded flavors why mess with a good thing. If you are fortunate to be sitting at a bar that has Mezcal hiding behind it, substitute to it for your favorite tequila just to compare.

::

As trends shift like the tides off our coast, some things always stay behind. I hope mezcal is something that will stand fast and be seen more and more in our local watering holes. For the man who wants to belly up to the bar and find a scotch or similar spirit that deserves the lightest of manipulations before it hits that glass, Mezcal is for you. I for one will be ordering a smoky mezcal with one cube next time I want to relish what is in my glass. Sip back and enjoy! <

WAYS TO NATURALLY INCREASE YOUR TESTOSTERONE LEVELS By Michelle Collins Read More at StyleToMe.com

> Testosterone is a hormone produced primarily by the testicles and plays a large role in male sexuality and reproduction. (It’s also to blame for those embarrassing, unexpected cracks in your voice during puberty!) According to Dr. Oz, between two and four million men in the US alone suffer from below-normal testosterone levels. Having low-levels of this hormone can cause you to suffer from tiredness, muscle weakness, low-interest in sex, weight gain, or depression. It’s not just a problem that’s affecting men age 50 and older, though. Levels gradually start to decline around age 30, and continue to decrease as a man grows with age. We’re sure you don’t want to put on any extra pounds and you definitely wouldn’t want your sex life to suffer, so consider these easy ways to boost your testosterone levels!

AVOID BINGE DRINKING It’s fine to have a few drinks to let loose, but studies suggest you cut yourself off after three drinks. Alcohol causes your testicles to stop producing testosterone, therefore killing those levels. This is one of the reasons you can find yourself having a bit of trouble in the sex department after a few too many beers after a night out. Moderation is absolutely key

STYLETOME.COM

for your testosterone levels when alcohol is thrown in the mix.

INCREASE YOUR ZINC A diet that is rich in the nutrient Zinc has been found to increase levels of testosterone in as little as six weeks. Zinc supplements unfortunately don’t boost levels above what is normal, so you must incorporate foods like lean meats and fish, raw milk, raw cheese, and beans to reap the benefits. However, be careful not to overcook these foods, as it will drastically deplete the nutrient levels!

GO HARD AT THE GYM Now you don’t need to be throwing around dumbbells and grunting so loud that it scares others working out, but regular exercise is an easy way to force your body to produce extra testosterone. Compound exercises that train several large muscle groups like squats, bench presses, dead lifts, and chin-ups are the best way to boost your testosterone and build more muscle quickly.

STOP WATCHING ‘GAME OF THRONES’ We scared you for a second, right? You can totally keep watching this show, but only if

you’re not awake watching it until all hours of the night! Sleep is vital to keeping your testosterone levels high, and it’s proven that these levels can drop by as much as 40% when you don’t get 6-8 hours of good, quality sleep each night

GET IT ON MORE OFTEN Here is some fantastic news: sex is good for you! Studies show that simply having an erection causes your circulating testosterone to rise significantly, and testosterone levels were even shown to increase on nights after sexual activity. Scientists recommend sex at least once a week, although that’s the bare minimum. (Pun intended!) After adhering to all the other health advice, this is one natural remedy that you can actually look forward to!<

“Having low-levels of this hormone can cause you to suffer from tiredness, muscle weakness, low-interest in sex, weight gain, or depression.”

Weekend Getaway in NYC Gansevoort Hotel By Jennifer Marcus Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> With more than 250 hotels in the Big Apple, finding “the one” can prove to be overwhelming during vacation planning. From luxury hotels to budget motels, hostels, rent-by-the-hours, and resorts, New York City is saturated with places to rest your head. My boyfriend and I decided that we needed a quick escape from Orlando and knew NYC was our perfect destination for a weekend getaway. The 2½ hour nonstop flight sounded appealing and with so many restaurants and activities, there wasn’t much need for ahead-of-time planning. Family and friends recommended a multitude of places to stay; from the Upper East to Midtown and Downtown, around Chelsea, and through Soho, but when the Gansevoort Hotel in the Meatpacking District was suggested more than once, we decided to make the commitment. And we’re glad we did. The Gansevoort Hotel has two locations in the city, the flagship hotel in Meatpacking and the less than 2-year-old location on Park Avenue. Both are well known for their rooftop pools and “placeto-be” rooftop bars. Known as the first and only luxury, full service resort in the Meatpacking District, Hotel Gansevoort has just about everything to offer in one of the city’s most vibrant locations. As my boyfriend and I dashed out of the cab and rushed through the revolving doors to escape the frigid weather, we were greeted by a white-gloved doorman who, with a smiling face, graciously took our bags and directed us to the check-in concierge. The lobby was warm and inviting, donned with dark wood, modern lighting, and an exciting energy from pods of people. What caught my eye was the quaint but cool lobby bar featuring a single pool table tucked in the middle of couches and tabletops, giving a lounge-like feel to this relaxing space. The bar had many options but I decided to quench my thirst and kickoff the weekend with what I saw most fitting…a Cosmopolitan. We headed upstairs to nestle into one of the 186 guestrooms on property. While staying in one of the 23 stylish suites wasn’t in our weekend-getaway budget, we were pleasantly excited for our spacious room, which would serve as our home away from home for the next two days. It’s typical for NYC hotels to charge an arm and a leg for a room that barely fits those said body parts, but our Gansevoort sanctuary featured a sofa, two chairs, an abundance of closet/drawer space, a large bathroom with a tub/shower, and plenty of space to move around, all for a very reasonable price. The décor included elegant drapery, tufted headboards, and a blend of fuchsia, plum, magenta, gold and champagne pops of color. Regal, yet calming.

STYLETOME.COM

Our favorite part of the room…a futuristic CD player on the wall that played an impressive lineup of jazzy songs and perfect “getting ready and setting the mood” tunes, hand-selected by the Gansevoort and available for purchase, which we happened to take advantage of. During our quick weekend escape, we chose to pamper ourselves at the Exhale Mind Body Spa located on the bottom floor of the hotel. The 5,000 square foot space was a tranquil setting with three ambient infinity-edge hydro pools and a swanky all-glass sauna. After the 60-minute rejuvenating massage, we felt refreshed and ready to take on a day in the city. Although we didn’t indulge in some of Exhale’s other primping services/amenities – facials, brow shaping, skin care, reflexology and full-service salon – we did, grab a few healthy snacks and goodies at their retail shop. The Gansevoort is located in one of my favorite areas of the city. Cobblestone roads outside of the hotel and a local café with chairs on a wide walkway, made me feel like, for a moment, I was in Paris. And the shopping in the area is top notch –All Saints, Bond No. 9,Ted Baker, Tory Burch, Spoon, Diane Von Furstenburg, Chelsea Market (a shopping mall in and of itself), just to name a few. Later that evening we ventured to the Landmarc Restaurant in the Time Warner Center for dinner and then headed over to the Mandarin Oriental to grab a few digestifs and enjoy the breathtaking views. Our second day was filled with a bit of shopping, meeting up with friends for lunch, and walking the streets of NYC. Thank goodness that the Gansevoort had a 24-hour fitness center featuring state-

of-the-art Life Fitness cardio equipment, weight machines, free weights, and the Mind Body studio, which offered a plethora of workout classes including yoga and barre. We didn’t take a class but figured that after checking out three of NY’s cupcakeries, we better have a little treadmill time.

black tea syrup, ginger syrup, sour and honey and poppy seeds. Punch Bowls were also featured for groups including the Connect 6 with Don Julio tequila, watermelon, lime syrup, cucumber, basil and yuzu shrub. A few glasses of that and you’ll be set to head out for a night on the town.

It’s a good thing we did workout because TOY Restaurant, located in the lobby, had our taste buds dancing when we saw the menu. I’m a sucker for Japanese/Chinese fusion cuisine, so when I saw hidden lobster dumplings with shiitake mushrooms in a coral lobster sauce, my knees got weak. The crispy rock shrimp with sweet chili sauce and spicy aioli, and the Kobe beef and foie gras tartare were also delicious small plate options.

If gallivanting around NYC at night is not your cup of tea (or alcoholic beverage), then look no further than the Gansevoort where you can head right upstairs to the rooftop where a heated pool awaits alongside Plunge Rooftop Bar and Lounge. In addition to the awe inspiring views of the Hudson River visible from Plunge’s outside terrace area, their was an interior lounge featuring VIP tables with white leather sofas, wall-to-wall windows, soaring 20-foot ceilings, intoxicating beats, beautiful people, and electrifying energy, which make you feel like you are partying like a rock star in Miami. And if Plunge isn’t enough, the Provocateur Lounge and Café attached to the hotel offers another option for drinking and dancing and features a private 80-person balcony skybox that is suspended above the dance floor.

Along with an extensive sushi menu, main plates that caught my eye were the Wagyu Tenderloin with parsnip puree, wilted watercress and TOY’s special steak sauce. The Cantonese White Fish with ginger and black bean sauce sounded divine as well. The drink options were the result of a genius mixologist who paired Bombay Sapphire East with

When we had enough fun for one night, we headed down to our room and melted into our delicious sheets. We lowered the mechanical window shade until all the city lights were no longer, and fell into a deep slumber dreaming about all the shopping, spa services, food, cupcakes, and dancing we had indulged in during our weekend excursion.

It was back home the next morning, but with smiles on our faces, for we knew that another weekend vacation to one of the best cities in the world, and of course to the Gansevoort, was in our near future.

Chart-topping Independent Artist, Macklemore By Riesa Pascal Read more at: StyleToMe.com

“Music is my creative outlet in terms of expressing what is important to me; what has importance, what has a value.”

> With two songs currently on the Billboard Top 10, turn on the radio for a few minutes and you’re bound to eventually hear a song by hip-hop and R&B singersongwriter, Macklemore. What makes Macklemore’s airtime and commercial success so unusual is that giant step along the road to fame the Macklemore very casually walked right over. Unlike Macklemore’s fellow chart topping artists such as Rihanna, Bruno Mars, and Justin Timberlake, Macklemore is not signed to any major record label. It is widely understated how amazing it truly is for an artist like Macklemore--who started at the very bottom--to have achieved such fame and success as an independent artist. This incredible tale of rags to riches started on June 19, 1983 when the artist we know

In 2000, Macklemore recorded and selfdistributed an EP titled Open Your Eyes.At the time he was going by the stage name Professor Macklemore. In January of 2005, he changed that name to just Macklemore and released his first full-length album,The Language of My World. From 2005-2009, Macklemore dropped off the music scene due to struggles with substance abuse. In 2008, Macklemore admitted himself into rehab for drug-addiction, alcoholism and related obsessive behaviors. “I’ve always struggled with being balanced. Haggerty was only 6 years old when he first became interested in hip-hop through the alternative hip-hop group, Digital Underground. Although his family supported his passion for music, they were not musically inclined themselves and Haggerty grew up surrounding himself with other like-minded friends who shared his passion. Being underage and unable to purchase music with parental advisories, Haggerty and his friends would spend the summer listening to the radio under tents and creating mixtapes of the songs they heard. At 14, Haggerty began writing his first song lyrics and further delving into the hip-hop world that he had already immersed himself into. Around that time, Haggerty picked up the nickname Macklemore from friends. As he began to explore the world of rap and develop his skills, he listened to various hiphop artists for influence. I’m like no, I can’t feed into that at all or I’m completely consumed and obsessive... I’ve felt so many times what it’s like to feel failure. What’s like to let people that love you down.” Says Macklemore during a YouTube interview. Perhaps it was that struggle of defeat and the resulting shame that gave Macklemore the drive and passion to recover from his addictions and return to his music even better than before. In September 2009, Macklemore released The Unplanned Mixtape and in October 2010, he teamed up with producer Ryan Lewis to create the VS. Redux EP. Macklemore used his prior experience with substance abuse to create the mixtape’s critically acclaimed song “Otherside” which contains samples of the famous Red Hot Chili Peppers song of the same title. Sadly, Macklemore relapsed in December of 2011 after coming down with a cold and being prescribed codeine cough syrup which he eventually began to abuse. Unfortunately, overcoming addiction isn’t something that happens overnight for anyone and Macklemore is no exception. It’s a constant battle that addicts must fight to win on a daily basis. Despite his relapse, however, Macklemore showed the world he had no intentions of staying down. He got back up, brushed himself off, stepped into the recording studio and released The Heist, his first debut album with his now permanent collaborator Ryan Lewis and the one that would rocket them both to stardom.

UCF KNIGHTS QUIZ test your knights knowledge

True or false? NO membership dues for the alumni association. Local chapters and clubs make it easy to socialize and build professional connections. The perfect start to fall festivities are UCF Alumni Indoor Tailgates, beginning Aug. 29, and Homecoming week, Nov. 3-9.

They’re all true.

“I never wanted to be an underground rapper. I never set out to just rap for the underground. I hate that term. That was never my intention. My intention was to make music that spoke to people and not just forty people... like, hundreds and thousands, if not millions of people connecting to what I’m writing about.” The Heist reached the #1 position on the US iTunes albums chart within hours of its release and peaked on the US Billboard 200 at #2. The undeniably catchy hit single “Thrift Shop” topped the Billboard Hot 100 list for six weeks which gave Macklemore and Lewis their first #1 hit in the US and a guarantee they’ll never have to step foot in a thrift shop again. As a recovering addict, the future won’t be easy for Macklemore, but with the support of his friends, his fans and his passion for music which gives him strength, I firmly believe he and Lewis will continue to achieve great things together. <
